By Sally Underwood FOUR people were left injured after a vehicle left the road and barrelled into diners outside a cafe in Caleta de Velez. A married couple and two further family members were all hit after a car allegedly mounted the pavement and smashed into the terrace of the El Calderon bar opposite the town’s marina. Married business owners Antonia Lopez and Modesto Gomez, and Antonia’s two sis-
ters, Eva and Mercedes, say they were all injured in the crash. Modesto is being treated in Axarquia Regional Hospital for a broken left leg, while the women suffered from bruising and dizziness. The four had visited El Calderon to buy seafood before deciding to sit outside the bar to eat. A few minutes later, the car allegedly smashed
through a bollard on the pavement, knocked down a lamppost and the bar’s awning and hit them all where they sat. Antonia told one publication the driver was a foreign women in her 40’s, adding, ‘it seems that she said she had confused the pedals to accelerate and brake,’ before claiming, ‘the fact is, once she rammed us, she kept accelerating, she did not leave.’

Hope for Axarquia homes
AN organisation is demanding a meeting with the new Andalucian government over the future of around 300,000 Axarquia homes not recognised legally. Save Our Homes Axarquia (SOHA) said it hopes the new President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, may work with them to find a solution to the many properties built on non-urban land whose owners face uncertainty. Fire rescue A MAN and his pets have been rescued from a house fire in VelezMalaga. The 61-year-old man is recovering at Axarquia Regional Hospital after being injured in the blaze. Emergency services rescued him from his home on the fourth storey of a building on Calle Polideportivo after he inhaled smoke. Local Police, fire services and sanitary services removed the man and his pets, and transferred him to hospital.

Criminal allegations: leading politician in court by Sally Underwood GREGORIO CAMPOS, the President of the Axarquia Commonwealth will appear in court this month to defend allegations he embezzled funds. The leading politician, who is also mayor of Iznate, is accused of fraudulently claiming more than €598 in ‘maintenance’ allowances between September and October 2015. Another politician, Gaspar Bokesa, General Controller of the Axarquia Commonwealth, is also under investigation for allegedly approving the expenses. Independent group, ‘Por Mi Pueblo,’ (for my town) brought the claims to court, ‘fulfilling its public inspection obligations,’ alleging Gregorio Campos, ‘committed crimes of embezzlement of public funds and of prevarication.’ Mr Campos denies the charges, saying the
claims were made legitimately during the period he was acting as president of the Axarquia Commonwealth but before he began to receive his €41,000 a year salary. He added the expenses were legal, and said he was, ‘absolutely calm,’ about the court case. He further alleged the claims have been, ‘known to the representative of Por Mi Pueblo for two years.’ Politicians from the opposing Partido Popular (PP) party are demanding answers, however, with the mayor of Torrox, Oscar Medina, calling on Campos to, ‘give explanations.’ Gregorio Campos was last month cleared by prosecutors in another investigation into whether he had correctly followed the law when offering public contracts. During the investigation, the politician said he had, ‘blind faith’ in the justice system.
A GROUP of friends in Velez-Malaga have won more than a million Euros in Spain’s Christmas lottery. The lifelong friends won a total of €1,250,000 after a family member from Almansa, who came to stay with them over the festive period chose the winning numbers. The group won the second prize in the contest, using the number 21015, ‘because it was the number my husband’s grandfather always played on this date,’ according to Sandra Diaz, owner of the hotel Dila in Velez-Malaga. Ms Diaz explained her husband Damian’s aunt
chose the numbers, adding her husband had been the one to tell each of their friends the good news. Another of the winners was Antonio Martinez, owner of bar La Casa de Martinez on Plaza de Capuchinos, while Antonio Piña, the owner of a painting company, was also in luck. He explained that on the day of the win he had got up to go to work at 6.30am but did not hear the news until midday. He told one publication: “It was a surprise and the truth is that it is very welcome, although I still do not know what I’m going to spend it on.”
Man ‘burns ex-wife’s house’ A GERMAN man has been arrested for allegedly setting light to his ex-wife’s house in La Cala del Moral. No one was harmed in the incident and the middle-aged man now faces charges of criminal damage and domestic abuse after he reportedly set light to the rural property near Rincon de la Victoria. According to one publication, police found the man after neighbours reported seeing flames coming from the building where a woman lived with her child. Neither was home when the incident occurred, however. Workers from the Provincial Fire Brigade, Local Police, health services, and Armed Institute attended the scene, with firefighters smothering the flames. The woman was treated at the scene for anxiety. Police located and arrested the man after he allegedly fled the scene.

Court ‘collapse’ A TRADE union has claimed a court in Rincon de la Victoria faces, ‘collapse,’ due to, ‘an excess of work and a clear underfunding of personnel.’ The Professional Trade Union of Justice said it has complained to the Junta de Andalucia but nothing had been done.
Wind damage FARMERS along the Costa Tropical are complaining of losing crops during recent high winds. One grower told a publication he had lost five tonnes of avocados, representing around half of his expected crop. Fruits which fall to the floor can be sold on for secondary products, but farmers must employ workers to collect them.
Stowed away POLICE in Motril were forced to intervene after a 15-year-old boy was found perched on the side of a Motril-Nador ferry as it docked. Members of the Coast Guard climbed a ladder to reach the boy, who was wedged in a porthole. Once on land, the child was arrested for entering Spain illegally.
Hash haul OFFICERS from the National Police have arrested two people for drug trafficking after seizing 1,098 marihuana plants from the basement of a house in Antequera. Police first became suspicious of the couple after noticing the noise of extractor fans coming from the property.

Ancient fiesta THIS photograph captures costumed revellers in northern Spain enjoying one of the country’s most ancient fiestas which is due to kick off this Sunday. La Vijanera takes place in the town of Silio in Cantabria. It is the first of Europe’s carnivals to take place every year. The festival sees participants don costumes themed around animals and nature. These include the Los Zarramacos who dress in sheepskins, wear
weevil hats and carry jingle bells which hark back to devices used in ancient times to ward off evil spirits. La Vijanera also sees people playing around 60 different characters. Each has its own costume and symbolism and characters include El Oso (The Bear), El Hungaro (The Hungarian), El Viejo (The Old Man) and Bruja (Witch). These characters and other festival goers gather in Silio’s town centre after their procession and read verses

Potential president TWO right-wing parties say they are close to reaching an agreement over who will be president of the Junta de Andalucia following a month of negotiations after the December 2 elections. The conservative Partido Popular (PP) and centreright Ciudadanos party have finalised a deal to ensure all right-wing parties with seats in the Junta de Andalucia are represented on the, ‘speaker’s committee,’ the group responsible for selecting a president. This move paves the way for the PP to have their candidate Juan Manuel Moreno sworn in as president, despite the party only receiving the second highest number of seats in the Andalucian parliament. The PP won just 26 seats, falling far behind the 33 seats won by the incumbents, PSOE. The left-leaning PSOE party fell far short of the required majority of 55 seats needed to hold on to power, leaving the door open for its right-leaning opposition parties to form a coalition. Far-right group Vox surprised analysts by gaining 10.9 per cent of the vote and 12 seats, making it the first anti-immigration group to win seats since the end of Franco’s dictatorship in 1975.

Maternity services slammed MAKING WAVES: The new machine could save lives.
Hospital goes 3D JANUARY ED: 1699 A NEW ultrasound machine at a Malaga hospital will detect heart disease in children. The 3D machine at Malaga’s Materno Infantil Hospital will offer real time studies of the heart and its valves, allowing doctors to diagnose heart disease in babies and children at an earlier stage and potentially saving lives. The equipment, which is positioned in the infant cardiology unit, “allows the detection of both congenital and acquired heart diseases from the mother’s womb and even in adults,” according to head of the unit, Juan Ignacio Zabala.
The €100,000 machine can also produce two views of the heart at the same time, replacing previous equipment and allowing diagnosis with more safety than before. According to Dr Zabala, “its high quality decreases the exploration time in complex heart diseases and in patients with bad prognoses, the exploratory time can be reduced.” Last November it was revealed the Junta de Andalucia was considering the impact of building a new 800-bed hospital on the land behind the Materno Infantil. Under the proposals the current Carlos Haya Hospital would become a 400 or 500-bed hospital for patients with chronic conditions. In turn, the Hospital Civico would become a research and training hospital.
Illegal houses face demolition TWO houses will be demolished after it was found they were built on non-urban land. The properties in Velez-Malaga were found by a Malaga court to have been built without a licence in 2004. The homeowners made a last-ditch attempt to halt proceedings on December 29 but have now been overruled and face eviction. The case against the houses has been ongoing since 2006 when Velez-Malaga Town Hall told the Public Prosecutor’s Office the properties had been built without a licence. It is also claimed the homes were built without action plans. A technician working on behalf of the families involved said he believes the buildings could be legalised. The news follows Save Our Homes Axarquia’s (SOHA) announcement that around 20,000 homes risk being demolished after they were unwittingly built on non-urban land. The organisation, which has been running since 2008, is asking Velez-Malaga Council to change its criteria to spare some homeowners the hardship of losing their property. Philip Smalley, the group’s president, said some owners “believe that because they have all their paperwork and no action has been taken against them to date they are legal.” He explained only around 200 property owners have contacted him so far and is calling on anyone with doubts over their home’s legality to get in touch at president@soha.es.

FEBRUARY ED: 1703 A UNION has condemned the facilities at Malaga’s Materno Hospital. The Malaga Medical Union has called on the Andalucian Health Service (SAS) to improve conditions at the hospital, claiming there is “deterioration in too many of the facilities.” The union claimed, “No draft reform works have been recorded since its inauguration almost 40 years ago and that important investments have been lost due to the various manager changes.” It further commented, “It is not ‘de rigueur’ that they continue postponing actions that are detrimental to the safety and comfort of patients and professionals.” Despite the criticism, it was last month announced the hospital had invested in a new ultrasound machine to detect heart disease in children. by Sally Underwood A 40-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested for attempting to sexually assault a store worker. The Sevilla native, identified only as JCCC, was released on bail pending a trial and has been ordered to stay 300 metres away from his alleged victim and her

legedly attempt to assault the woman as she worked in a clothes shop in the town’s centre. The 24-year-old victim claimed the man entered the shop around 4pm as she was alone. She said the man threw her onto the ground before grabbing her by the neck and threatening
to kill her if she screamed. The victim explained she was able to kick the attacker off and he ran out of the shop. Police later arrested the suspect as he sat inside his car in the El Playazo area. The attack is the second of its kind to make the news in Axarquia this year after a 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting his friend in Almachar. The Spaniard now faces prosecution after his alleged victim told police he abused her after she passed out drunk at a house party. According to the victim, the man later admitted the facts to her during a mobile messaging chat.
SCAMBUSTERS: Investigators swooped on eight offices in Malaga and Madrid. NATIONAL POLICE investigators have held 79 people in connection with a boiler room style-plot that saw victims defrauded of €2.5 million. It comes after raids on eight offices in Malaga and Spanish capital Madrid, with the three kingpins of the scam among those arrested. Officers swooped in the wake of a two-year probe, an official statement confirmed. The racket saw low-level gang members place ‘aggressive’ phone calls to small businesses and private individuals with savings, offering bogus high-profit and low risk investment opportunities.
APRIL ED: 1711 Those placing the calls were given scripted replies to typical questions, giving them the best chance of conning their targets. They also designed professional-looking websites on which ‘customers’ were able to open accounts and operate in an online marketplace with fake contacts in the UK and Bulgaria, plus offshore tax havens including the Marshall Islands and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The online portals were on several occasions shut down by the Spanish National Securities Market Commission, with gang bosses setting up new sites to replace them. Once clients were signed up, they would be hammered with phone calls from the fraudsters, who persuaded them to sink cash into worthless financial products or non-existent raw materials including gold, corn and oil. They even met face-to-face with cautious investors, telling them that they themselves had made thousands of Euros from the same deals. Two of the ringleaders had previous convictions, one for fraud, while the third was a lawyer who gave legal advice to the pair.

The project’s plans were torn up when the crisis hit, leaving its half-finished 700-metre-square powerplant deserted and baffling locals for over a decade.
There has been no mention from the town’s left-leaning council of recycling the ‘impossible’ project or selling any of its costly installations, 80 per cent of which were paid for by the EU. The high-tech waste processing system would have served 8,000 homes and put an end to the bad smells of overflowing bins.

OFF TRACK: Trams could return to Velez-Malaga. VELEZ-MALAGA’S council has been seeking an agreement with the Junta de Andalucia to partly fund the town’s tram network after six years of no service. The region’s government would cover around 40 per cent of the costs under the deal if it is approved. Velez-Malaga’s mayor, as well as the council’s transport spokesperson, said the authority’s board had approved a motion calling for an urgent meeting with Andalucia’s ministry of development regarding the plans.
The cost of the network was estimated to be around €40 million. News of the deal comes as the authority was previously investigated over its spending on the inactive trams by a public spending watchdog. Five alleged irregularities were probed and three remained up for further investigation following a council appeal. Velez-Malaga transport spokesperson Marcelino Mendez-Trelles said issues surrounding the trams had become political.
“There are many possibilities for our tramway system to work again soon. The €40 millionworth of investment will once again be put to use. “We must recognise the good work of the city council technicians who have informed the court about all and each of the required aspects for the network,” he said. Mendez-Trelles added the court of accounts investigation showed there had been no technical or economic issues with the running of the network.

PLANNING officials in Velez-Malaga have agreed to allow a developer to survey the River Velez delta with a view to protecting it against flooding for later development. The town’s council signed the agreement with the Sociedad Azucarera Larios SA (SALSA) company. It allows them to assess the costs of building flood defences on the river’s left bank next to a site where 1,200 homes are set to be built. Antonio Moreno Ferrer, the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) mayor of Velez-Malaga, said the council would be able to give permission for further developments. Francisco Delgado, the head of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) group on the council, claimed officials did not give them time to scrutinise the agreement before it was signed.

AUGUST ED: 1729 RURAL ROADS: Rustic routes now being developed.
Rural roads being developed NIJAR Town Council is beginning to reap the rewards for its efforts working on the rural roads in the municipality. They are now repairing routes that were left in a poor state of repair after a decade of neglect, claims the present administration. It hopes that by upgrading the roads the district’s farmers will be able to export more, and boost the local economy as well as council coffers, which at the moment carry a debt of €20 million. The trails in El Pandero and Los Cazadores are the first in a long list that will be completed in the coming years, until the secondary road network has been fully developed in the agricultural sector of Nijar. The works have been carried
out in recent months under supervision of the councillor of Agriculture Manuel Moreno Bonilla. Los Cazadores has had 3,460 square metres resurfaced, while El Panadero has seen 3,951 metres covered. The improvements not only involve asphalt, but also structural changes that have been made which will lengthen the roads’ lifespan. These areas are now ready to withstand the weight of heavy goods vehicles that circulate the road network, which connects greenhouses with shipping centres. From there agricultural products are sent to markets all around the world. Mayor Esperanza Perez Felice visited the area with Bonilla to oversee the progress made.
Reef plans AUTHORITIES in Rincon de la Victoria announced they have launched the second phase of planning to create an artificial reef off the town’s coast. The town’s council is reportedly hoping to model the future site on one in Lanzarote. Several divers called on authorities to create an artificial reef five years ago and the council has since selected the El Cantal area as its location. Francisco Salado, the mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, said officials were hoping to move forward and make the plans a reality as soon as possible. “We are aware of the difficulty involved in the processing of documents. But it will be worth the effort because of the richness in animal and plant life artificial reefs can contribute to marine ecosystems,” Salado said. Officials hope to begin creating the reef in 2019 with no completion date set.

Immigration crisis as Motril overwhelmed THE number of migrants landing on the Granada coastline principally at Motril - has risen 40 per cent with 5,301 registered so far this year. It is a stark reminder of the growing humanitarian crisis that has seen hundreds of drownings as people make the perilous sea crossing from Africa to Europe. In 2014 Motril saw just 501 immigrants land, a figure that is now reached in just two weeks. In 2015 that number rose to 901 before the figures started climbing at an even more rapid rate. The huge increase in numbers has come at a cost to Motril and the province of Granada. Until this summer there had been hardly any expansion of the services dedicated to the reception and processing of immigrants, leading to the immigration service being almost paralysed through overwork and a lack of facilities. The Temporary Foreigners Reception Centre (CATE) in Motril was overwhelmed - it had space for just 80 people. Immigrants had to be transferred to the National Police Headquarters in Granada. But a lack of space there meant immigrants were released after just 72 hours in reception centres. Many ended up congregating in the city’s bus station. In order to avoid situations such as this, Motril has used municipal sports halls on several occasions, given the obvious lack of space. Recently a tented camp has been set up by the military to act as an enlarged reception centre in Motril with capacity for 250 people. In addition to the problem of lack of space, the shortage of police officers had to be added. To deal with this, more than 20 officers reinforced the National Police of Motril. It has been announced that these extra officers will remain in Motril until October 16. But according to police trade unions it is too little. They are calling for 100 extra officers to be drafted in to deal with immigration. During the past few days, the

Neighbours saw the commotion and called police as well as the property’s other owner as he travelled to work. The owner made his way back home, reportedly disturbing the intruders and entering into a struggle with them. Charity walk for funds VELEZ-MALAGA Council has announced a charity walk in aid of childhood leukaemia. Esteban Torres had been Chief of the Velez-Malaga Local Police and an inspector in the National Police until February 2017 when a council vote of no confidence forced him to step down. WORKS to begin a construction waste recycling plant in Torre del Mar have made progress. The project, which will see rubble left over from building sites recycled into a composite to regenerate local beaches, has now been passed on to an environmental department, which will decide on the plan’s viability. The move enables the company to extend the maturity of its debt to five years and increase flexibility with the National Securities Market Commission. Over the past month GBP/EUR has fallen from €1.13 to €1.10 while the GBP/USD exchange rate has slipped from $1.28 to $1.26. What’s been happening?
VOLATILE: The final few weeks of 2018 witnessed their fair share of currency volatility. M u c h o f t h e p o u n d ’s r e c e n t weakness has been caused by PM Theresa May delaying the parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal. Although Sterling recouped some of its losses after May survived a vote of no confidence, the renewed focus on a no-deal Brexit kept the currency under pressure. However, losses against the
euro were less pronounced than elsewhere as a surprise contraction in German GDP in the third quarter weighed on the euro. Indications that economic output in the Eurozone as a whole is faltering also saw the euro dip against the US dollar. That being said, the euro did gain some support from the news that the EU and Italy
have finally come to an agreement over the Italian budget. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for a fourth time in December and indicated that further rate hikes could be on the cards next year. What do you need to look out for? Things have started to slow up in the build up to Christ-
mas, but the pound will remain highly sensitive to Brexit developments over the coming m o n t h , w i t h t h e U K ’s e x i t from the EU now less than 100 days away. The euro, meanwhile, may prove more reliant on data, with the single currency potentially softening if the Euroz o n e ’s e c o s t a t s c o n t i n u e t o point to a slowdown in the fourth quarter. T h e E C B ’s e c o n o m i c b u l letin will also be of interest. A dovish tone from the ECB would be euro-negative. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I MUST confess to find the ongoing saga of the Arabian princess who tried to flee the United Arab Emirates and was allegedly captured at sea in March, yet another interesting example of Mid East hierarchy running roughshod over international laws. The death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has still to be explained. So far that particular murderous act has followed the predictions I made a few columns ago - ie a long ‘investigation,’ followed by the arrest of so-called rogue operators who will subsequently be put on public trial. This latest act of alleged kidnapping and piracy does I’m afraid not bode too happy an outcome for the young lady in question. The family she has now been forcibly reunited with has already announced they have doubts as to her emotional stability and mental state. Be that as it may, it is certainly a predictable statement and no doubt forerunner to the blanket of secrecy that will undoubtedly be pulled down over this whole sorry affair, as the Princess is brought firmly back into the family ‘fold.’ This event did bring home to me one of the risks I found myself running during my far off ‘Arabian days.’ At the time I had no idea of the gravity of the situation that I found myself in, or in fact the danger and repercussions that could have befallen the

At the time I was becoming quite successful in Saudi and had my own spacious apartment, cute little Datsun 280 ZX and a nice few quid buried in the garden! I was the proud possessor of a new telephone landline and was basically riding the
crest, as they say. I had begun to receive a number of phone calls that consisted mainly of female giggles and ‘how are you’s’ in what was obviously an Arabian accent. Anyway to cut a long one short, the calls ultimately became more personal and interesting and
naturally the ol’ boy finally got around to inviting her over. I was certainly aware that we couldn’t be seen in public, but figured it was all still a bit of harmless fun, and hopefully a few frolics to boot! She subsequently arrived one day accompanied by her Ethiopian maid and companion. Obviously upper crust, she told me she was in fact a Princess from an extremely well-known Saudi family. They stayed about an hour, which included much giggling and coy exchanges until they finally left with promises to call again one day. That day never arrived. In fact I never heard from her again. (Sorry to disappoint!) It was only much later that I realised that what had been to me a spot of silly fun and games had been unbelievably dangerous for the young lady in question, and could in fact have led to extremely severe punishments that could have included death by stoning. Lord only knows what could have been the ol’ boy’s fate. Doesn’t even bear thinking about. One time I can assure you I was delighted not to have had my wicked way. And you can take that to the bank. Good luck Princess Latifa, our thoughts are with you and all the other oppressed females who reside in these countries. A very happy New Year to all. Keep the faith. Love, Leapy.

TECH FOR THE TIMID TOO much e-mail is not a technical problem. It’s a people problem. You can’t fix people, but you can fix your e-mail. Particularly when, like my friend recently, your Inbox is struggling under the sludge of thousands of e-mails. Yes I know, she should have created a selection of nice pretty folders and dragged each e-mail into one, but perhaps she preferred to have a life. You could of course just leave your e-mail overload where it is. That nice Google company gives us 15 gigabytes of e-mail storage free, which would hold, oh I dunno, several squillion e-mails. But good luck trying to find the specific one you want one day. In principle you don’t have to go through all your thousands of e-mails one by one for the mother of all spring-cleans. You can in fact delete the lot with just a couple of clicks - if you really want to. Beware. Let’s first be clear on one vital

OVERLOAD: Nail that mail. bit of e-mail housekeeping: savvy e-mail users don’t work with their e-mail directly in the Gmail (or other provider ’s) website. It’s clunky, it’s inflexible, and it gives you little control. It is a far, far better thing that you do to install an actual dedicated e-mail program (called a ‘client’ in the jargon), and access your e-mail that way. The added advantage is that the website still
keeps all your e-mails archived in reserve, in case things ever go wrong on your own computer. There are plenty of (free) e-mail programs available for the taking. Thunderbird is a classic, Windows comes with the very basic Mail app, or you can move up a rung to Outlook for more features. Other popular programs are Mailbird Lite, eM Client, Opera Mail and Incredimail.
Another tip if you’re facing a giant clean-up is the possibility of moving to a ‘universal’ e-mail address. If you’re simply using the one your ISP provides, you’ll lose it when you move or switch providers and you’ll have to start again from scratch. But if you u s e G m a i l ( o r Ya h o o , G M X Mail, Zoho Mail, Apple’s iCloud or even the rather mysterious Elude beloved of people paranoid about their privacy) - you c a n k e e p i t f o r l i f e . Yo u r s , o r perhaps just the life of the company providing it. So: install your dedicated e-mail program, route all your e-mail to it, create specific folders below the Inbox (family, friends, enemies, junk, Nigerian princes, your call), then drag and drop whole batches of e-mails into their appropriate folders. Job done and a happy 2019 to you too.
Hotmail ain’t cool DID you know that if you still have a Hotmail address, some of the folks you deal with online will automatically assume that you are (a lot) older, you’re not very tech-literate, and according to one UK car insurer, you’re more likely to crash. Hotmail ‘retired’ in 2013 - time to move on gramps. If you don’t want the ubiquitous Gmail, Yahoo now offers anyone a free account, with 1,000 gigabytes of storage. Will that do nicely, given Yahoo’s insistence that this ‘can handle 6,000 years of inbox usage for the average user’? And remember: these days, one’s not enough. Use a main e-mail address for trusted friends, family and business, and a secondary one for all those merchants you just know are going to spam you.

PEDRO SANCHEZ’S pre-Christmas foray into Cataluña opened the door to more dialogue with its pro-independence government. The Partido Popular, Ciudanos and Vox are naturally hopping mad while welcoming the excuse to call Sanchez a traitor. That’s how the Spanish nationalists see it, but the 50 per cent of Catalans who don’t want independence would presumably prefer Churchill’s jaw-jaw to the war-war Casado and Rivera have set their hearts on.
Long memories IS the success of extreme right wing Vox in Andalucia’s regional elections a mirage? The period between 1939 and 1975 is still present in many minds. There are still people around with a relative who was executed or imprisoned after the Civil War. There are still homosexuals who remember having to hide their sexual preferences. There are still women for whom contraception was inaccessible and who remember the backstreet abortionists. A large proportion of the local population is thankful for Spain’s Constitution and pres-

ence in Europe. Come the May 26 elections, how many of them are going to vote for a party that would reverse everything achieved over the last 44 years?
Just imagine THE Prestige oil spill polluted 1,600 kilometres of coastline between north Portugal and the south of France. A tank burst on the structurally unsound 26-year-old ship during a storm on November 13, 2002. It was carrying 77,000 of fuel oil and sank 210 kilometres off Galicia on November 19. Against the advice of the Prestige’s captain Apostolos Mangouras, the Interior minister Mariano Rajoy ordered the stricken ship to put out to sea instead of making for a port where the oil spill would have been disastrous, but could have been contained. The Prestige case reached the La Coruña High Court in 2012 and Mangouras received a two-year prison term for environmental crime. A London insurance company and the
ship’s owners were told to pay €1.5 billion compensation in sentence, now confirmed by Spain’s Supreme Court. Rajoy initially made light of the oil spilling from the Prestige, which he compared to ‘four strands resembling plasticine.’
His gift for minimising catastrophe foreshadowed his dismissal of PP corruption as ‘isolated cases’ in May 2018 on the eve of the Gurtel sentences and his own political demise. Not so much understatement as a total absence of imagination.

During the economic crisis he told journalists that Santa Teresa would ‘intercede on Spain’s behalf.’ Fernandez Diaz goes to Mass each day and spends retreats in the monastery at the Valle de Los Caidos where Franco still lies in state. THE video of a choir of Danes in swimsuits sunburned was undoubtedly the coolest marketing campaign designed to raise awareness of the importance of preventing the excesses of overexposure to the sun. The creator of this campaign deserved his wages for the next five years, at least. This campaign promoted by the prestigious and powerful Danish Cancer Society was the beginning of my relationship with the campaign that the Western Costa del Sol Health District and the Costa del Sol Hospital of Marbella have developed over the last 10 years under the direction of my now good friend, Dr Magdalena de Troya, Head of the Dermatology Service of that Hospital. Although this may be based on the Costa del Sol, the lessons are applic-

My especially pale skin made me aware at an early age of the adverse effects that solar overexposure can have and this made me enjoy the sun in a much more sensible way. So I was very happy when following the Danish campaign video, the
doctor and the coordinator of the Sanitary District, Nuria Delgado, contacted me to request the help of the Consulate. Magdalena, Nuria and I worked on the project which was without a doubt very interesting, and also gratifying on a personal level. Dr Magdalena de Troya has led
a team which has developed and promoted healthy habits regarding exposure to the sun and getting local town halls to provide information for their bathers, lifeguards and beach workers (wear sunglasses, hats, shirts, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun etc) and have their own ser-
vices for the prevention of the effects of overexposure (the installation of shaded areas, sunscreen cream dispensers and ‘sun lights’ that warn of the level of radiation, among other things). With the collaboration of the Consulate, open days were held at the Hospital which the Danish Social Security has in Benalmadena Pueblo (Montebello) where dozens of diagnoses were made for visitors and patients. I hope that this can be an example followed by other regions such as the Costa Blanca and the Balearic islands. I attended the official closing ceremony of the 10-year campaign and there I had the opportunity to find out the scope and importance of its results. We have answered the cry for help from those Danes burnt by the sun and we hope we have raised awareness and helped some of them at least, but in the same vein as the video itself, we have also enjoyed ourselves. What more could you want?

Is avoiding animal produce a gay thing? Barry Duke WHEN I was living in London, a neighbour asked me the daftest question I’d ever heard: ‘What do gay people eat?’ As soon as Hilary’s words came out her mouth, and she saw my eyebrows escalate to a hairline I no longer have, she realised how stupid they sounded. In a fluster she explained that what she meant to find out was whether homosexuals were more inclined to veganism or vegetarianism than heterosexuals. I didn’t have an answer to that question, but afterwards I did some research and discovered that a greater percentage of the LGBT community appeared more inclined to embrace veganism or vegetarianism than their ‘straight’ counterparts. The memory of that conversation surfaced last week when I was listening to a London radio station, LBC, where a heated phone-in was raging over what the presenter called ‘vegan

Some reported receiving death threats from these fanatics. While some who phoned in were supportive of these tactics, most deplored them, and rightly so. We simply cannot allow zealots to dictate what we can and cannot eat.
Is there a gay element among this growing band of food fascists? I really have no idea, but a piece published last year in Diva magazine declared that compassion is a well-known trait among LGBT folk, and that the vegans and vegetarians among them simply choose to eschew animal products. Compassionate people don’t go on rampages and issue death threats, so I’m inclined to believe that, if gays
were among the ‘terrorists’ that made headlines, they would have been in a tiny minority. But the Diva piece, written by Josie Le Vay, left no doubt that veganism and vegetarianism is growing dramatically in LGBT communities. Le Vay wrote: ‘Gay vegans are everywhere. It’s actually got to the point where I presume gay people I meet are vegan … I’ve seen multiple
vegan cafes with Pride flags … Most of the girls I’ve dated have been vegan or at least veggie. ‘If we look at our beloved LGBT+ celebs, you’ll be surprised (or completely unsurprised) to know that many are in fact vegan themselves. Ellen Page, Jane Lynch, Simon Amstell, oh, and the mother of all gays, Ellen Degeneres.’ She then conducted a Facebook poll that indicated that 66.4 per cent of vegans or vegetarians were gay. I am not one of them. But as a lifelong carnivore I do, wherever possible, make sure that the meat I eat is ethically sourced and humanely slaughtered. For this reason I flatly refuse to eat animals that are cruelly killed according to religious rites: kosher or halal. So opposed was I to such ritual killings that, 10 years ago, I gave up my favourite dining out habit: eating in curry houses. I did so because virtually all of them displayed halal notices. Instead I began preparing my own curries, and continue to do so to this day. And, without meaning to boast, I can say they are every bit as good, if not better, than any I ate in a restaurant.

WHAT with Brexit, the drones, groans and can’t-get-homes Gatwick ‘miscommunication’ fiasco, you could be forgiven for missing all the recent ‘mis-speaking.’ First off, Lewis Hamilton’s description of his home town Stevenage as ‘the slums’ angered many people, not least most of its residents. Well, with Stevenage, what you see is what you get. An honest town in that respect. New town, post-war families working hard. No slum. Not the middle-class wannabee of Welwyn Garden City, but no slum. And Lewis, albeit brilliant world champion racing driver, knows that. Though I’m sure he’d have liked it to have been because it would have made his ‘down with the boyz’ street talk so much more convincing. Basically, Lewis doesn’t stop and think before he speaks. But then, do our politicians? Just recently, we had Corbyn’s ‘stupid woman’ gaffe aimed at Theresa May followed by innumerable oh-yes-he-did and oh-no-he-didn’t panto-politics claims he actually said ‘stupid people.’Yeah, right. But this mis-speaking isn’t confined to British politics. Consider Hillary Clinton and the countless times she ‘mis-speaks’ about being in places where she clearly wasn’t. Under

Problem is, it does come out of a Tom Clancy novel. Pure alien fiction (on a level with that early chatter of alien-operated UFO drones at Gatwick.) Then there’s Sarah Palin (remember her?) who, amongst other claims, swore she could ‘see Russia from Alaska.’And, nearer home, Malaga bureaucrats who threaten to fine householders for repairing cracks (yes, cracks!) in garden walls without a permit when there are complete, unlicensed villas in the surrounding campo. Yes, mis-speaking is a bit like the norovirus: it’s everywhere now. Which reminds me of the
magistrate who, before sentencing, asked the accused if he had anything to say. ‘*uck all’ came the reply. Travel MENTION the Balearic Islands in conversation with anyone and the majority of people will immediately only think of Mallorca and Ibiza. However, geography students and travel experts will know that their often forgotten neighbours of Menorca and Formentera have their own individual attractions on offer. Menorca (or Minorca) takes its name from its size when contrasting it to the nearby island of Mallorca. With a population of roughly 95,000, Menorca is particularly well known for its traditional summer fiestas, with the biggest held at the end of June during the ‘Festes de Sant Joan.’ Spanish fiestas in general are known for their strange and unusual traditions that are often on display during their local parades, and Menorca certainly has one of the more off-beat among them. On the first day of the three-day festival, a man carries a freshly groomed sheep on his shoulders and parades it around the streets! The production of wine has been a major part of the local

to the number of new microwineries that have started up. When it’s said that the Spanish islands are invaded by Brits (on their holidays, of course), in the
case of Menorca it’s also historically true, since the Royal Navy invaded the island in 1708 during the War of Spanish Succession. This long-standing British influ-
ence may well explain the Menorcans’ love of gin, and during the local fiestas the spirit is mixed with bitter lemon and known as a Pomada. Nearby, just six kilometres south of Ibiza, is the island of Formentera. This really is the baby of the Balearics, with a resident population of around 9,000 on an island that is only 19 kilometres long. Politically, there is only one municipality on the island imaginatively called Formentera - and the island has a number of major villages such as Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola and La Savina. It is believed that its name derives from the Latin word ‘frumentarium’ which means granary, and many time-served tourists say that Formentera is ‘what Ibiza was 20 years ago.’ Extra connections from the Spanish mainland and inter-islands have developed the tourist trade although still remains popular for naturists who use the long sandy beaches for an ‘all-over tan.’

THE festive season is great; catching up with family, indulging in our favourite foods, and generally having a good time. But alongside any feelings of discomfort you may experience from too much food or alcohol, can be evidence of overindulgence shown on your skin and hair. Our skin, hair and nails are a good barometer of health and are very quick to show when we having been looking after ourselves as much as normal. This can present itself in the form of hair that is dry and unmanageable at the mid-length and ends but greasy at the root. Or skin that has lost its healthy colour and may look dry or flaky. We may even break out in more spots than normal. The best changes always take place from the inside out, and we can undo a lot of damage caused after having eating unhealthy food or drinking more alcohol than normal by cutting back on the food and drinks which are worst for us. Most people naturally cut back a little in January, slowly WITH Strictly Come Dancing as popular as ever, more and more people are taking up dancing. And researchers in Japan have found older people who take up the hobby are less likely to lose their independence. A team of scientists tracked a group of more than 1,000 women aged between 75 and 84 and found those who dance were less likely to need help with everyday tasks such as bathing. They also found dancing was more effective than other forms of exercise in helping with independence, compared to jogging, cycling, and golf. The study, carried out at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology and published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science, found that dancing, ‘is a more useful exercise for maintaining brain structure and balance in older adults’ ability to walk, strength and flexibility exercise.’ Lead author Dr Yosuke Osuka said: “Although it is unclear why dancing alone reduced the risk of ADL [activities associated with daily living] disability, dancing requires not only balance, strength, and endurance ability, but also cognitive ability - adaptability and concentration

A VISITING friend staying with us on the Costa Blanca has asked why leading supermarkets here do not have a special check-out for pensioners? It seems in Singapore, where she lives, there are special check-outs marked for pensioner shoppers only, with benches so that while waiting they can sit down. In addition an assistant is on hand to help put purchased items in shopping bags. I am not aware if these exist anywhere in Spain, though I am sure other EWN readers will know. With the number of elderly shoppers and retired people here, it seems like a good idea. Having said that, they did not feature in supermarkets in the UK either when I lived there. Fuengirola’s beach (Costa del Sol Issue 1746) and I just want to show my support and admiration for them. If my back wasn’t so bad I would be out there doing my bit too. It’s so important to treat this planet with respect and it pains me to think of all the marine life suffering because of the selfishness and foolishness of humans. Everyone at the Plastic Free Seas Foundation is doing wonderful work and I hope this kind of initiative is rolled out across the world. Just a few hours of work can gather up a ton of harmful waste, and then all the volunteers should treat themselves to a well-earned ‘cerveza’!
APPARENTLY Spanish grandparents spend an average of six hours a day with their grandchildren. This does not go down well with some academics. In the past a report worried that this may be too much for the elderly and that they should have a right to say ‘no I need a rest.’ This is a slightly offline message in Spain, as the extended family is one of the great joys of Spanish culture. It is a facet of life that seems to be increasingly lost in some other European countries as the Nanny State encroaches ever further into our lives. The willingness for families to rally round and help out when needed is a huge boon to society as a whole, and also to the State, which then doesn’t need to pay up for a huge array of social services including childcare. Those grandparents who do help with childcare make a huge difference to their children. Times are tough and wherever possible many families in Spain have to have both parents working to make ends meet. Often they cannot afford childcare and that is where the grandparents come in. They selflessly pitch in and help out. The suspicion of the report is that they may be exploited by their unscrupulous offspring looking for an easy life. But the report forgets the quid pro quo - those grandparents will themselves be looked after by their children when they need help. That is as it should be. Families should stick together.

A Grand Old Lady
Colin Bird THESE days we need to replace our electrical appliances and high tech gadgets at regular intervals, not only because of incessant upgrades, but because they simply fail and go toes up. It is not due to the inability of manufacturers to make things that last longer as they once did, but with consumers always clamouring to purchase the next supa dupa model, there is no need. But the one exception to the reliability rule is automobiles. The trustworthiness of new cars today is fantastic, and with generous warranties available, it means that trouble free motoring is largely something that we can now take for granted. There are exceptions, but generally speaking as long as you treat your beloved motor with a bit of respect, then it will repay you with good loyal service. I t ’s s t r a n g e t h e r e f o r e h o w many of us blokes always harp on about a particularly favourite car that we owned in a previous

Parents at fault Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man BEFORE I start this, I have to say that I like children. Well, let me qualify this, I like well-behaved children. The ones I’m not too fond of are the ones that are allowed to do what they like, when they like, where they like, with parents that do not give a monkeys what inconvenience it causes others. Come to think of it it’s not the children that tick me off; it’s the parents that let two-plus-year-olds run round a restaurant screaming at each other. The parents sit there totally oblivious of the noise. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be having fun. They should be, but not at the expense of the other punters. Then all of a sudden, they decide they have had enough and start yelling at the child which then starts the poor little so and so crying and screaming and then mum or dad start shouting even more. Then the idle threats start. ‘If you don’t stop I’m sending you on the next plane back to England!’ You can almost see the child thinking ‘No you aren’t! I’m five ... you have to
come up with something more believable than that ... but in meantime I’ll just carry on screaming.’ I was in a supermarket recently and there was a woman with a five or six-year-old child and he was kicking off like a thing possessed and she was totally ignoring him. Obviously she had read somewhere that this is the correct way to deal with this situation but I have to tell you, even though I’m no expert, it’s not! At that point a woman walked up to her and said: “Excuse me, can you control your child or at least stop and ask him what’s wrong.” Well, all of a sudden it became quite apparent where this small person developed his temper because his mum went berserk at this woman telling her, in no uncertain terms, to mind her own business. But what did happen was the child, all of a sudden, stopped screaming to watch his mum take over the tantrum. I walked off and left them all but having a full blown punch up. My last plea is to the passengers on aircraft. It is not acceptable to let your little precious constantly kick the back of my seat and yes I will turn round and I will ask you to get them to stop and no it’s not their fault or mine, it’s YOURS! mikesenker@gmail.com.

I could just about afford to keep her on the road by cutting down on luxuries like food and underwear, but when she developed arthritis in the gear box and her plush Rolls Royce type grill needed replacing, I had to reluctantly admit that it was time to part company. It had been a brief but hectic and intoxicating love affair. My recent acquisition is the new Peugeot 3008; a lovely piece of kit that drives like a dream and I have no doubt will give me years of fault free service, just like the 12-year-old I traded in. But nothing will ever replace that old Vanden Plas lady in my affections.

I have written for all the catering journals and magazines like OK, Hello and now Euro Weekly News (by far the best one!) Almost every New Year I write about being healthy because, let’s face it, we wake up on New Year’s Day feeling dreadful and realising that we
have eaten and drank enough to last the whole year! We want and need to make some changes to our diet, eat less junkfood, smoke less, drink less and then by March we will have forgotten about it all! But you can and should be able to sustain it as long as you don’t feel the cravings. Out of all the diets and fads (and I’ve tried them all!) the best one by far is the Keto diet. The name ‘keto’ in a ketogenic diet comes from the fact that it allows the body to produce small fuel molecules called ‘ketones.’ This is an alternative fuel source for the body, used when blood sugar (glucose) is in short supply. The liver produces ketones from fat. These ketones then serve as a fuel source throughout the body and ketones are produced if you eat very few
A Beginners guide to a low carb Keto diet carbs and moderate amounts of protein (excess protein can also be converted to blood sugar). It’s a diet that is safe for everyone unless you are taking medication for diabetes, high blood pressure or you are breast feeding. (Consult your doctor first .) On a ketogenic diet, your entire body switches its fuel supply to run mostly on fat, burning fat 24-7. When insulin levels become very low, fat burning can increase dramatically. This is great if you’re trying to lose weight, but there are also other benefits, such as less hunger and a steady supply of energy. • Eggs • Natural fat like olive oil, butter, coconut oil, avocado oil • Meat • Vegetables that grow above the ground especially leafy green vegetables • Berries like strawberries, blackcurrants, blueberries • Tea, coffee with no sugar, water, wine in moderation, some diet drinks What shall I avoid? • Bread unless made with almond flour • Potatoes • Pasta • Sweet candy • Chocolate bars • Rice and grains • Most fruits other than some berries • Fizzy drinks and beer • Condiments like ketchup, brown sauce
• Energy drinks, smoothies, orange juice Some of these changes may take getting used. Personally I drink wine and diet coke and sparkling water and I have taught myself to ignore the more carby foods but that doesn’t meant that from time to time you can’t eat the odd carb. So on a Sunday when the restaurant is closed I usually cook a roast meal with roasted potatoes and some of the more carby root veggies. To be honest I don’t miss them much and I don’t feel ‘wow thank god for potatoes.’ And if it works for me it should work for you too! At The Little Geranium we are about to introduce a healthy menu section, based around the Keto diet plan. Here are some food swaps to kick off the Keto plan gently: 1. Swap milk chocolate for
dark chocolate ideally sugar free(a minimum 80 per cent cocoa solids) 2. Swap fruit yoghurts for natural Greek yoghurt and add fresh raspberries 3. Swap cheese and biscuits for cheese with an apple or with olives or celery 4. Swap crisps and sugary nuts for whole brazil nuts or macadamia nuts 5. Swap white rice and all grains for cauliflower rice 6. Swap potatoes for cauliflower hash browns or cheesy cauliflower 7. Swap below the ground root veg for above the ground green leafy vegetables 8. Swap sweets and cakes for fresh raspberries or blackberries 9. Swap bread for bread made with only almond flour 10. Swap flour for almond flour, you can still eat pizza etc! Almond Flour Buy peeled whole almonds (or peel them yourself by blanching in boiling water and removethe skins). Blend in a food processor until fine and pass through a sieve. You can add yeast, but don’t add sugar!

GERMAN car maker Porsche has unveiled a new touring model which it said was designed for maximum driving pleasure. The Porsche 718 T is based on the design of the 1968 911 T and is available in the company’s Boxster and Cayman ranges. The company said in a statement that its ‘T’ touring models were synonymous with driving pleasure. “The 718 T will be most at home on winding country roads, offering the joy of dynamic driving as its ultimate goal,” Porsche said. “The two-seater accommodates this philosophy through a pared down range of features,” the company added. The 718 T features 51-centimetre alloy wheels, the PASM sports chassis, a six-speed gearbox, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and Porsche dual-clutch transmission. It is powered by a 220 kilowatt four-

Jaguar XF: Class is permanent NOT only do today’s senior executives have to deal with the many pressures of running business, but choosing a company car can be equally taxing. In recent times three fine luxury saloons have been launched by Mercedes, BMW and most recently, Audi, making it quite a head scratcher to pick a winner. But for those who simply can’t decide, there is always the dependable Jaguar XF. As with its rivals, you get a choice of petrol or diesel engines, two of each, in the XF’s case, in varying states of tune and with either one or two turbos or a supercharger attached. The range stretches from a 161bhp 2.0-litre diesel right up to a 375bhp 3.0-litre supercharged petrol V6 in the XF S. All but the latter can be had in one of three versions: entrylevel Prestige, aggressive-looking R-Sport or luxurious Portfolio.
All are automatic, while the majority of engines are offered with the option of four-wheel drive. Notable by its absence, mind you, is any form of hybrid, plug-in or otherwise. Inside, the Jaguar XF certainly manages to feel opulent, from the thin sliver of wood encircling you to the fluted leather on the seats. Like all modern Jaguars, the XF is let down a little by its infotainment set-up too, which is a little fiddly and dated looking. There’s a decent amount of space up front too, and in the back there’s more than enough for two large adults. The boot’s one of the biggest in its class too, although it isn’t the most usable thanks to an oddly-shaped floor that slopes up toward the front of the car, making it harder to stack large loads. Also, when you start the engine there is a rather invasive
hum, and a considerable vibration through your seat. However, the chassis rides fluently and irons out larger undulations, settling into a relaxed lope on the motorway. The steering is beautifully judged: fast without feeling snappy, smooth without impacting on feel, light but without feeling remote. Out of every corner you blast, faster and faster, squeezing on the throttle each time and allowing the traction to carry you away. For all its rattle and hum, this big diesel engine is certainly punchy, serving up huge globs of torque right where you want them. Overall, this is still a likeable enough alternative to the luxury car norm and one that, if you’re willing to live with its flaws, will put a big grin on your face every time you take the long way home.

Nadal is only the second player in history to win the same Grand Slam 11 times after Margaret Court, who won 11 Australian Open titles between 1960 and 1973. MICHAEL SCHUMACHER’S 19-year-old son Mick, has claimed his maiden Formula 3 victory on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, 26 years after the legendary German driver, won his first F1 title there.
LEWIS HAMILTON has won his fifth F1 World Championship, making him the joint second most successful driver of all time. The 33-year-old becomes only the third man in history to win five world titles and draws level with Argentinian legend Juan Manuel Fangio. Only the peerless Michael Schumacher stands ahead of him with seven titles, and that total will be the Briton’s next target. Hamilton needed only to finish seventh at Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix to become champion, even if Sebastian Vettel had won. However, the German Ferrari driver could only manage second place behind the dominant Max Verstappen, despite a strong and determined race. Hamilton battled tyre problems throughout a difficult race, but his finishing position of fourth was more than enough to
