AN elderly woman has been injured following a house fire in Rincon de la Victoria. The 95-year-old was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke caused by a fire which broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning on Calle Trebol. Health workers took the woman to the Malaga Regional Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze was reported at around 1.30am. It has not yet been announced what caused the fire.

Abusive teacher jailed By Sally Underwood A TEACHER who abused five girls at a school in Torre del Mar has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. The man must also pay €10,000 in compensation to each of his victims. The convicted was found guilty of five counts of sexual abuse against children over a ‘long time,’ until his arrest in January 2017. During his trial,
the defendant admitted taking advantage of his role at the Custodio Puga school, where he had been employed since 2012, to sexually abuse five girls aged 10 and 11. Prosecutors said the man committed his crimes in full view of the rest of the class and would sit the children on his lap or on a chair next to him, touching them on or under their clothes while pretending to tickle them or explain some-

Baking bad by Sally Underwood POLICE have arrested a man who allegedly held up a bakery in Motril at gun point. The suspect, a 30-year-old man with a criminal record, reportedly stole €150 in cash from the small business before fleeing on a stolen motorcycle. Police said they were called to the
scene after reports a man had used a gun to hold up the bakery, taking bills and coins from the till. The man is said to have three previous convictions for other offences, two from courts in Melilla and Granada which called for his immediate imprisonment. Following an investigation, officers from the National Police were able to recover the stolen motorcycle used as
the getaway vehicle before identifying and detaining the suspect. The man reportedly resisted arrest, injuring two officers in the struggle. After searching the suspect, police allegedly found a 32-calibre revolver and ammunition, as well as €1,100 in cash. Officers handed the man over to the judicial authority which ordered him to be placed in prison.
A MAIN road between Torrox and Nerja has reopened following a huge rock fall. The N-340 coast road between the two popular towns had been closed for two weeks after a five-ton boulder fell from the cliffs above. Emergency works to secure the rock face and remove the boulder saw road users diverted to the nearby motorway, with access limited to those living in homes behind the road. Torrox’s councillor for Infrastructure, Paola Morena, visited the site at kilometre 288.4 to check on the works which required between €35,000 and €40,000 of investment. No-one was harmed in the incident, although the Torrox Local Police released a statement warning drivers to avoid the road. In a comment on their Facebook page, officers said, ‘Attention!! This afternoon there have been landslides in the Calaceite area that have affected the N-340, at kilometre 287, in the municipality of Torrox, very close to the Nerja border.’

In memory ALCAUCIN has a new park in the Olivar de Buenavista urbanisation, created in memory of Pablo Raez Martinez, a young Marbella man who died in February 2019. Life and death THIS photograph of people rescued off the coast of Spain has won an international photography competition which comes as the world marks International Migrants Day this Tuesday. The image of migrants stood huddled in blankets aboard the NGO Proactiva Open Arms rescue boat comes from Argentinian photographer Juan Medina’s Life and Death in the Mediterranean series. It was chosen by a panel as the winner of the 22nd Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian
Photography Award, organised by the Doctors of the World global health NGO. Doctors of the World said in a statement the panel chose Medina’s photograph because of its ‘exceptional visual impact’ and ‘expressive force.’ The image was captured last August after the Open Arms vessel picked up the migrants in the central Mediterranean after they sailed from Libya. It was taken shortly before the ship arrived at the port of Algeciras in southern Spain. The unveiling of the picture as

Strike off WORKERS have agreed in principle to call off a strike in Torrox, the same weekend as a popular local festival. Following two weeks of demonstrations, members of the Torrox Mixed Cleaning Company, have agreed to accept a 6 per cent pay rise this year and a 2.5 per cent next year, as well as two consecutive days off a week in exchange for calling off the strike. Workers threatened to refuse to work during this weekend’s Migas festival, when Torrox showcases the popular dish. Representatives from labour unions say they are now waiting for written agreement of the improvements from Torrox Council before committing to cancelling the planned strike. The workers planned to strike from Friday to Monday.

CONTACT HER: WILD BOAR: Not normally found so high up the mountain. by Sally Underwood LOCALS in Torrox, Axarquia, were left dumbfounded after a wild boar found its way into the quiet mountain town, roaming through the streets and even making its way up and down steps. The boar, which experts believe was around three years old, evaded capture for two hours, before a group of hunters and volunteers from the local Proteccion Civil were able to capture the animal.
The runaway was cornered in a car park where experts tranquilised and lassoed it before returning it to the countryside. Sources told one publication, boars rarely travel so high up into the mountains, and usually remain near Torrox’s river. A spokesperson said; “With the rain in the countryside in the last few weeks there is a lot of fresh grass and food, so I do not think it’s hungry, it would have been confused and ended up wandering into the streets in broad daylight.”
New home needed by Staff Reporter BORN in July, Angus was rescued from the streets when he was only a few weeks old. Malnourished, ill and terrified, the kitten had little chance of survival when he was rescued by Axarquia Animal Rescue.
Angus had a badly broken leg and needed a large operation to repair and pin the breaks. He has recovered well and has full mobility, and lives with a foster family awaiting a permanent home. Diane McLelland from Axarquia Animal Rescue said: “This little kitten had so much going against him, yet he’s confi-
dent and very loving and trusting.” She added “he likes to eat and just snuggle up next to you or on your lap.” Diane now hopes someone will provide a forever home for Angus. Dangerous crossing by Sally Underwood POLICE have arrested four young Maghrebi migrants who arrived at a beach on La Herradura by boat. Officers from the Guardia Civil confirmed they are still searching for other possible occupants of the small wooden boat who ma y h a v e f l e d a fter rea c h in g th e shore. The boat carrying four immigrants aged between 15 and 16, is the second to arrive in the municipality in less than two weeks.
The occupants were taken to the Almuñecar Guardia Civil barracks and will be transferred to a camp in Motril where members of the National Police and Red Cross will identify and look after them. The immigrants are thought to have been sailing for two days from northern Morocco, in the boat measuring around three-metres long using a 15hp engine. At the end of November, another open boat carrying 15 North African migrants also arrived at Almuñecar ’s San Cristobal Beach.
Ins and out of the Padron Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality. The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services. Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name. To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner). Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. In the Alicante Province, for example, it’s three months. To find out more, visit: www.gov.uk/guidance-requirements-in-spain. Padron holders have the right to vote in local elections. Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain. The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods.

Abuse suspect ‘innocent’ RELATIVES of a Motril priest accused of abusing a young girl in Venezuela have protested his innocence. Despite Ivan Merino having admitted abusing a 12-year-old girl, his brother told one publication he is innocent and he has been in contact with the Spanish Consulate in Caracas over concerns for his sibling’s well-being. Jose Raul Merino said he has been told Ivan is in, ‘acceptable conditions.’ He added: “The consul visited him concerned about his humanitarian situation regarding whether his human rights are being respected and says he is in good condition, which has left us somewhat calmer,” said Jose Raul Merino. At the time of the arrest he acknowledged that he feared for his brother's life due to the circumstances in which his arrest took place. Ivan Merino Pedial, 35, worked as a professor at the Santo Tomas de Villanueva school in Granada until three years ago when he was transferred to Venezuela. The priest confessed his crimes to the police in a video statement posted on Twitter. Merino admitted: “we grew fond and it was a game… and one thing led to another.”
Starring role MALAGA is set to take on a starring role in a new Netflix series by the makers of Game of Thrones. Local film company Fresco Film has chosen Antequera and Ronda as locations for its new 10part series centred on the manga comics character Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn. The show, created for popular internet streaming website Netflix, will revolve around Sister Shannon Masters, a godfearing heroine who takes on missions to defeat evil. Since its launch in 1994, the comic has received criticism for some controversial storylines, yet managed to maintain its popularity. Peter Welter, a producer from Fresco film, said: “It will be a great promotion for Malaga because of the international reach of the Netflix platform.”

Global migration pact SPAIN’S Prime Minister travelled to Morocco on Monday to announce the country’s signing of a UN global migration deal. Pedro Sanchez announced in Marrakesh that the nation was joining the UN’s Global Compact on Migration. The deal aims to provide countries with a framework through which the movement of people can be managed. Sanchez said the deal was based on international co-operation, shared responsibility and solidarity. “We fight those who use migration as an excuse for nationalism and xenophobia,” the

The country has become the main entry point into Europe for migrants travelling from North Africa, with tens of thousands having come to Spain so far this year. Back to the table BRITAIN’S Prime Minister is set to travel to Brussels for talks with EU officials and member state leaders today (Thursday) after being forced to cancel Monday’s Brexit vote in parliament. Theresa May met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday to garner support for changes to the current Withdrawal Agreement agreed last month. European Council President Donald Tusk said the EU would not renegotiate, including on the Northern Irish backstop, but was willing to find ways to help get the deal through parliament. “We are willing to discuss how to facilitate British ratification. But as time is running out, we will also discuss our preparedness for a nodeal scenario,” Tusk said. The Northern Irish backstop continues to be the main sticking point for the deal. That leaves May with little room for manoeuvre and with few options other than to secure change on the backstop, or face the deal being voted down.

New capital key for ECB THE European Central Bank would have to reduce its holdings of Spanish, Italian and French government bonds by nearly €90 billion if it strictly follows its new shareholder base, recent data calculations reveal. The ECB started to buy government debt in 2015 in a bid to revive inflation in the euro zone, with a pledge to divide up its holdings in proportion to how much capital each country had
paid into Frankfurt’s coffers. Four years and €2 trillion later, the ECB has deviated significantly from this so-called capital key, with Greece and Cyprus being excluded from the programme and a scarcity of bonds to buy in other countries. Italy, Spain and France, which have large stocks of public debt, picked up most of the slack, and ended up with some €36 billion, €28 billion and €24 billion worth of debt on the ECB books

THE European Central Bank has launched a new system aimed at letting banks settle payments instantly across Europe, helping them compete with PayPal and other global tech giants. Developed in just over a year, the ECB’s TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) system will let people and companies in Europe transfer euros to each other within seconds. A spokesman for PayPal said the firm welcomed TIPS and called for ‘more collaboration across the payments industry.’

EUROPEAN UNION finance ministers have struck a deal on a major reform of banking rules, addressing some of the loopholes exposed by the global financial crisis. The overhaul, proposed by the European Commission in November 2016, sets the level of buffer banks must raise to absorb losses, and introduces new capital requirements to strengthen financial stability. Under the reform, European banks will have to abide by a
new set of standards aimed at keeping their lending in check and ensuring they have stable funding sources. Some technical details need to be finalised by the end of the year, with talks ongoing. The agreement comes after two years of discussions and adapts EU rules to deals reached at a global level with US and Japanese regulators, although the draft deal agreed includes tweaks to global standards and a number of waivers.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL SPANISH banking group Santander is planning to target the ultra-wealthy as part of a three-year expansion strategy. The expansion will be led by Santander Private Wealth, a new unit created to combine its private banking and asset management operations. The bank plans organic growth instead of takeovers to meet its goals, and has hired 30 people for the unit this year. Santander wealth management chief Victor Matarranz said: “The reason these clients are so important is that they are normally families who can make a great impact in their community. “They are owners of companies, they create a lot of jobs and a lot of wealth. And they need a single point of contact where they have all these needs solved.” The banks aims to lure the ultra-wealthy in Brazil and Mexico, leveraging its existing presence in Latin America. O2 offers customers credit TELEFONICA-OWNED mobile operator O2 has said it will compensate its customers following a day of disruption to its data networks. Pay monthly customers will be credited with two days of monthly airtime subscription charges in January. Pay As You Go customers will get 10 per cent credit on a top-up and Pay As You Go mobile broadband users will get 10 per cent off a Bolt On Purchase, in the new year. O2 issued a joint apology with mobile network supplier Ericsson for the shutdown. The compensation for Pay Monthly customers includes SMB business and mobile broadband users. O2 has 25 million users and also pro-
vides services for the Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff and Lycamobile networks, which have another seven million users. Many customers reported that they could neither make calls or send texts during the crisis. Services such as bus timetable information were also affected, while many businesses faced disruption. Ericsson is carrying out a ‘complete and comprehensive root cause analysis,’ of the problem. O2 is owned by Spain’s Telefonica and has the UK’s largest mobile network after EE, which is part of BT.

Times they are a-changing... LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AFTER living back in the ol’ country for the past few weeks, I can quite categorically assure you that the never-ending assault on the UK culture and traditions is alive, well and continues unabated to obliterate everything our ancestors fought, breathed and died for. It’s not only the rising immigrant population (280,000 from outside the EU so far this year). It is the ‘snowflakes’ and PC brigade which I find most unacceptable. Just recently an MP was taken to task for calling some of his staff ‘girls’. Apparently, to some PC bunch or another, this was considered ‘a frightening combination of sexism, ignorance and nepotism’ and decreed that the adult female gender should only be referred to as women! According to another lot, ‘husband and wife’ should be replaced by ‘partner and spouse’. This of course would entail rewriting the history books, large chunks of the Bible, Shakespeare and our time-honoured sacred marriage vows. The vegan lot are also predictably regaling in the indecisive and rudderless journey the UK is experiencing at this time. They want us all to eat lettuce
ATTACK: Veganism is an attack on our cultural values. and ban just about every reference to meat and carnivores, including such innocuous phrases as ‘bringing home the bacon.’ They also suggested that residents should change a village called ‘Wool’ to ‘Vegan Wool.’ You really couldn’t make it up. If only some of these sad people would direct their energy into preserving the values and traditions of the country which nurtured them, we may stand more of a chance against those who would
seriously change it forever. Those akin to the PC Lord Mayor of Bristol, who removed two Gainsboroughs from her office because it depicted links to the slave trade. One was replaced by the picture of a lion and the other, a portrait painted by a local artist, of a black woman Henrietta Lacks. (No, me neither!) Or the mayor of London, who has banned all advertising hoardings on the London underground de-
picting bikini clad females. (What next, skirts around the legs of grand pianos?) Our language is also under constant attack. ‘Th’ is rapidly becoming replaced by ‘f,’ and ‘g’ by the letter ‘k’. Nuffink and Somefink are prime examples. But to me, the most telling example of the capitulation of those in authority to the less linguistic educated, was the decision to allow the voiceover presenter to leave out the letter ‘t’ in the recent I’m A Celebrity programme. This had to be a deliberate decision by the producers and ensured that, over the next few weeks, millions of viewers would constantly hear the word celebrity pronounced celebri’y. I dunno. Perhaps it’s me! Bring back those wonderful old English words already lost in the mists of time. Snollygoster. A man of intelligence but no principles. Ultracrepidarian. One who has many opinions on subjects they know nothing about. Grumbletonians. Those unhappy with government. Hugger Muggers. Those indulging in secret behaviour. Cockalorium. Small man with a big opinion of himself. Callipygian. Having a beautiful well shaped butt. Odd that. Apart from the last one, they all sound perfectly descriptive of me! Keep the faith. TECH FOR THE TIMID A GYM teacher once baffled our class, saying we should line up alphabetically in order of height. Here’s my related confession: my computer desktop is arranged with absolute OCD symmetry, pretty rather than practical. The Home screen on my phone is a perfect balance of round and square icons with no colour clashes whatsoever. Trouble is, I can’t delete any app I don’t use because it upsets the aesthetics. Like many of us these days, I have a congenital reluctance to delete. But if life is far too cluttered technologically, isn’t it time to do something about it? ‘Cyberhoarding’ is a new term for those of us drowning under the unmanageable weight of our data; an inability to get rid of stuff we accumulate online. Let’s start with our apps. How many do you actually use? An old journalistic dictum says ‘When in doubt, leave it out’. Holding onto that obscure Mongolian-Swahili dictionary, just in case? Off with its head, uninstall, and if you

When a friend in need asked me to fix his sludge-slow system, I had to throw in the digital towel when he wouldn’t let me uninstall any of his ‘vital’ 100-plus programs. Nobody needs 100 programs.
Outlook ground to a halt for a colleague a while back, and she berated Microsoft for designing such a clunky program. Quite right, until I found way over 1,000 e-mails in her Inbox. Delete, or file, don’t just leave. Time was when we took a few photos and saved just the best. Today we
keep them all, even the duddest of the duds. Be ruthless: weed out the best and zap the rest. At worst, move the bulk off your device and onto a harddrive, USB stick or into the cloud. WhatsApp is a notorious data-hog. If you really do still need to be reminded what your sweetheart ate for breakfast four Januaries ago, at least delete the Weetabix photo that went with it. The same goes for Twitter. CDs and DVDs of programs you’ll never use again? Computer accessories once cutting-edge but now just metal and plastic flotsam? Old phones desk-drawered five contracts ago? Head for the charity shop, the old-gadgets collection bins or back to the dealers who are supposed to know what to do with this stuff. Finally, close those accounts you thought you just couldn’t live without. Trust me, you can. In fact, one of these days I’m even going to close my own MySpace account. Promise.
Drag and drop THERE’S a magic word for decluttering your digital life. Folders. Or directories, for those of us still versed in earlier computing ways. I’ve never known a computer storage mess which can’t be improved by simply creating folders and dragging stuff into them. A thousand e-mails in the Inbox? Take time to create folders for their categories or senders, drag and drop till you, er, drop, and the unmanageable suddenly becomes manageable. The same applies to photos, letters, documents, downloads and the rest of the digital detritus submerging us. The Germans have a point, at least when it comes to cyberhoarding. ‘Ordnung muss sein’: there must be order. Except perhaps on Amazon, where it’s excessive orders which got us into this mess in the first place.

Why not be sensible? Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LOVE my TV. I enjoy movies, a few soaps, TV series - American and English - and I watch them through a little IPTV box which goes through the internet. I also have apps on my phone which allow me to watch certain programmes. What confuses me is why I can’t do what I used to do and subscribe to Sky and watch everything I want like I used to. I’d happily pay. I don’t want it for nothing. I’m paying now, so why don’t companies like BBC, ITV etc. allow us to watch their programmes here? It’s so annoying to be on my phone looking at some app like Twitter and when I go to watch a video clip, up comes a message saying ‘not available in your country.’ It’s a clip for goodness sake, and I’m going to watch it anyway because I have a VPN. Google it. When will these geniuses realise that they can’t stop anybody watching anything they want? So instead of trying to block everything, make it all legitimate and charge a sensible fee, like Netflix do, make life easier and earn some money at the same time. This week a group called PETA - an animal rights group - and, by the way, I have to say I love
animals and would never knowingly hurt one with the exception of the odd mozzy or fly, oh and cockroaches - have decided we can’t say things like ‘flogging a dead horse’, ‘take the bull by the horns’ or ‘kill two birds with one stone.’ Instead, the group advises we try saying, ‘feed two birds with one scone.’ I am officially calling bull**** on all this nonsense. I may have mentioned this before, but how difficult is it, for a mega size company to just have someone answer the phone and ask how they can direct your call. It’s bad enough in England but here in Spain it’s a nightmare if, especially like me, you don’t speak that much Spanish. My phone provider used to have a very easy system that worked fine. You dialled 123 and you were instantly offered the option to simply press two for an English-speaking operator. It was that easy, but not any more. They have changed the whole system and now it’s so complicated. Why change it? It was simple and it worked. Now, I have to dial a different number and then get given countless other options which I don’t understand because they’re in Spanish and then there’s the dammed music. Listen guys, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Well that’s my rant this week. I’m off to the bar down the road to have a ploughpersons’ lunch. Richard Shanley IDRIS ELBA will return as DCI John Luther on New Year’s Day in the fifth series of the BBC One crime drama. Luther will air on successive nights, with the whole of the new four-part series showing between January 1 and 4 . A recent trailer showed Elba’s Luther hunting down a masked killer and showcased new recruit DS Catherine Halliday, played by Wunmi Mosaku. There was also a glimpse of Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan, despite her being apparently killed off previously. Fans will be delighted to see Elba don his tweed coat for the first time since the 2016 edition of Sport Relief. After the fourth series aired in 2015 there had been hopes it would spawn as a big-screen version, but a film never materialised. Each episode of the new series will air at 22.00 CET on BBC One and iPlayer. The first episode will follow the festive edition of Doctor Who, which is being shown on January 1 instead of Christmas Day.

ON the last day of the election campaign in Andalucia, the national government’s vicepresident Carmen Calvo declared: “It’s important that the victory of Andalucia’s socialists should be a great message to the rest of Spain.” But the socialists’ only victory in Andalucia was being the most-voted party with a snowball’s hope in hell of forming a government. The only message was the galling reality that Susana Diaz lost Andalucia to Vox, not to the Partido Popular, which haemorrhaged votes and not even to Ciudadanos which absorbed them. Vox, a PP breakaway approximate to the Tea Party in the US, was regarded nationally as an outsider which turned out to be a dark horse. The party’s 12 seats in Andalucia’s parliament robbed Diaz of any chance of governing, unless she manages to rope in Ciudadanos while overcoming the personal hostility of Podemos leader Teresa Rodriguez. FED up of reading about the Brexit mayhem? Well, fortunately we have Emile Ratelband, the Dutch motivational speaker, entrepreneur and former daytime TV presenter I wrote about here recently, to keep us amused. Emile, who claimed age discrimination if he wasn’t allowed to knock 20 years off his registered date of birth, must remain 69, otherwise - according to a Dutch court ruling - there would be ‘undesirable legal and societal implications’. Finally, a sensible judgement on a daft, self-serving issue. (If Emile looked 20 years younger, this might have been worth the bother. Sadly he looks his age, but he got himself worldwide publicity which was probably the goal.) So, a correct decision here putting an end to all sorts of ghastly implications regarding age of consent, underage sex etc. Now, can we get judges to decide on the veganism issue currently doing the rounds? Then, let them get their teeth into gender reassignment of very young children in particular. Interestingly, it’s perfectly legal to change one’s sex, which also has significant ramifications. I could go on and on... The problem is not so much that people want to be, or are, different from the way

Exercise benefits last WE all know exercise offers multiple benefits. From improving muscle tone, heart health, lung capacity, flexibility, and aiding weight loss, there are very few health concerns which exercise cannot assist. In the study, rats carried out three 20-minute treadmill runs before being tested. Researchers said they believe the benefits discovered may last longer, the more a person trains. Dr Kevin Williams, who led the study, claimed the results may explain ‘why many people don’t feel hungry after exercise.’

I READ with interest your coverage of the 40th anniversary of Spain’s Constitution and I felt compelled to write to you about democracy and its value. As a man in my later years I still remember when General Franco ruled Spain. The country was poor and its people trampled upon while Franco and his cronies got rich and powerful at their own citizens’ expense. On a slight aside, I was also particularly disturbed at Leapy Lee’s idea of sending so-called snowflakes to ‘bootcamps,’ which sounds suspiciously like another kind of camp that Franco was fond of sending his opponents to. Spanish democracy has its problems but many people here will tell you they feel immensely lucky to have a Constitution that legally protects their rights. Those who grumble about the often cumbersome nature of Spanish politics ought to remember the days when the Franco regime was ruthlessly efficient at suppressing the freedom of its people. A pop at Vox I AM a retired British expat on the Costa del Sol and the sudden emergence of the far-right Vox party is another worrying sign of the times. I knew hardline right-wing parties had been making ground in many other European countries, but for some reason I thought Spain was happily immune to it. The future seems so uncertain and Vox needs to be put in its place before things get out of hand. At least there are plenty of progressive, open-minded people here who will speak out and go on anti-fascist marches to let these people know that racism and prejudice have no place in the 21st century. Shocked by slaughter HAVING read the EWN online was so shocked by the report on lamb slaughtering. However you do not make it clear whether this is religion-based slaughtering for Jews and Muslims or a normal abbatoir. I HAVE asked the town hall several times to do something about this bin under our bedroom window. Rubbish is constantly dumped. Any left outside the bins on a Friday will stay there at least until Monday. When we had heavy rain recently it travelled down the road until it rested against our car and dented it. People slam the lid at all hours as they drive past and drop their rubbish. The new bins on the paseo maritimo are far quieter, why can’t we have similar ones in our street? Catherine Capper

BRITAIN’S Prime Minister chose to put off the crunch parliamentary vote on Brexit this week and has admitted it would not have passed. Theresa May told MPs on Monday she had decided to delay the vote on the EU Withdrawal Agreement to give her time to get more concessions. But with EU officials saying they will not change the deal agreed only weeks ago, it seems unlikely May will get anything substantial out of yet another round of talks. Opposition MPs, the Speaker of the House of Commons and even the Prime Minister’s Conservative colleagues did not take kindly to May’s decision. It has probably not won her many friends across the channel either. The Prime Minister’s decision shows the Brexit deal is a compromise which pleases neither remainers nor leavers. Given May’s red lines on free movement and other areas it is hard to see how she could have done much better. Brussels’ priority in negotiations is not to pander to anti-immigration sentiments in Britain but to protect the EU, of which free movement is a cornerstone. But ultimately the decision shows that May has either reached her nemesis moment or is at least on thin ice. It seems as though there is no scenario that could please enough MPs to get parliamentary backing. This could be the twilight of May’s premiership.

Capitalist through and through Many years ago my the owner of the firm I worked for bought a new Mercedes, it was £67,000. We never saw it parked in the yard and I found out that he felt guilty to show it as things were not going that well and some redundancies occurred. I recall thinking why? The car is a symbol of past success and employment. I would say to people I hope he gets two Mercedes, or a Rolls Royce. The better he did, the better the company was doing. KAREN DANCZUK treated herself to a winter escape as she soaked up the sun on the Costa del Sol at the weekend. ‘Selfie queen’ Karen, 35, exwife of Simon Danczuk, the former MP for Rochdale, oozed confidence as she strolled along the beach. Dressed in a red bikini printed with white hearts, the brideto-be looked carefree as she strolled along the shore and relaxed by the water. Karen, who became engaged
to her fiancé, a Spanish waiter named David in July, appeared to be making the most of some alone time in the sun. The prolific social media user was not wearing her engagement ring to the beach. She split from the Rochdale MP in 2015, and at the time blamed her husband’s ‘jealousy’ of her lifestyle for their marriage breakdown. Former Labour Councillor Karen was also spotted on a Spanish beach last month.

The Nutcracker by Sally Underwood CHRISTMAS has truly come to Nerja with a performance of festive favourite The Nutcracker on Monday. The ballet will be performed from 8pm until 9.30pm at the Nerja Cultural Centre with tickets costing €25. The performance, which will take place over two acts and five scenes, is based on the story by ETA Hoffman, ‘The Nutcracker and the king of mice.’ With a libretto by Marius Petipa, the music was composed in 1890 by Tchaikovsky and the dance choreographed by Lev Ivanov.
The Nutcracker premiered on December 5, 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg, featuring the characters Clara, Drosselmeyer (Clara’s godfather) and The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky later composed an orchestral Suite inspired by his own ballet, and the performance has since gone on to become a Christmas favourite, performed every year around the world. The classic story tells the tale of a young girl Clara who is given a nutcracker toy for Christmas by her godfather, a toy maker. After her gift is damaged by her brother, Clara falls asleep under the Christmas tree with the nutcracker in her arms. On waking she finds a nutcracker army has come to life and is battling the Mouse King and his soldiers. Clara wins the battle by throwing her slipper at the king’s head and is rewarded by a party thrown by the Sugar Plum Fairy, who dances a solo ballet piece to perhaps one of Christmas’s most recognisable pieces of music.

S we race towards Christmas and the New Year this month is very much ‘party month’ and the CCC of A is no exception! The month got off to a flying start with the Club’s monthly dinner at Treetops Restaurant at El Chaparral. To contribute to the festive spirit the Club had organised a traditional Christmas lunch/dinner of roast turkey with all the trimmings. Cava and canapés were served to members and their guests on arrival and music for dining and dancing was provided by the superb Karen Cooper. A terrific evening was enjoyed with celebrations going on to the early hours. No change there then! The following Saturday saw organiser, Ian Giles, arrange a classic car run starting from Venta Peligrino near Marbella. Not only a classic car run but a lunch and party to follow at Cascada Restaurant, also near Marbella, where Cava was served to members on arrival and live music was enjoyed through and after lunch with dancing and a terrific party spirit. The run itself got under way after coffee and bacon ‘sarnis’ at 11.00am and headed towards Coin, circumnavigating the town and heading for Cartama. The route passed Pizarra and then turned up towards Carratraca where a coffee stop in beautiful sunshine took place at Venta Los Conejitos. From there, suitably refreshed, crews headed along an old and rarely used scenic run through the forest to Carratraca. After joining the main A-357 for just a few kilometres the route then turned off through the town of
Ardales and headed through the stunningly picturesque countryside towards el Burgo, before turning up and over the mountain to drop down into Casarabonela. Here a Cava stop was much appreciated by all, with 35 classic cars parked in the sunshine on the edge of the woods just above the town. A quite beautiful sight! From Casarabonela and, after a 40-minute stop, cars headed for Guaro and Monda, rejoining the main A-355 road to drop down towards La Cañada and Marbella. The route distance was an enjoyable 135 kilometres, so crews were definitely in need of a good lunch and a small drop of Cava to get them through the dining and dancing to follow. Cascada Restaurant produced some very good food, this time with no turkey anywhere to be seen! After a selection of interesting starters, main courses were a choice of John Dory or a winter beef stew with root vegetables and a huge ‘Christmas Chocolate Log’ to finish up with. As if that wasn’t enough, the Club then arranged its annual Christmas Party at La SalaBanus on Tuesday evening. This was a ‘Black Tie and Posh Frocks’ affair and a very elegant crowd of Club members and their guests turned out to celebrate not only Christmas but the end of another hugely successful year for the Club. This time, turkey was a definite ‘must’ and it was quite superb. Excellent starters and La Sala excelled themselves with not only fabulous food but great service. The entertainment was provided by the brilliant Mark Connor and Michelle Daniels who kept everyone on the

dance floor until past ‘close of play’! The ambience that was created by the La Sala decorations and outdoor ‘Grotto’ and falling snow (yes, really!) went a long way to ensuring that all present had a great time and was probably the first real ‘Christmas Spirit’ that most people had experienced this year. That was to be the last of the Christmas ‘Special’ events until the New Year but, already, work has started on planning events. The Club’s monthly dinner will be postponed by one week until January 8 and the Club’s classic car run will also be one week later than usual, taking place on Saturday, January 12. This event will be organised by Steve Robinson and more information will appear on the Club’s website www.cccan dalucia.com nearer the time. A longer, four-day car Tour is also being planned and will run either at the end of January or in early February. More information on this can be obtained from the writer, Ian Giles, after the festive period. CHELSEA bounced back from the disappointment of losing at Wolves a few days earlier to end City’s 21 game unbeaten league run stretching back to April, in a 2-0 win. The defending champions paid for a lack of ruthlessness as they dominated the first half, only to be struck by a smash-and-grab right on halftime as N’Golo Kante put the home side ahead with their first shot of the match. The Blues gained confidence and momentum after the break, securing the win with 12 minutes left when David Luiz’s glancing header from a corner went in off the far post. They closed out the win to give Maurizio Sarri his first triumph over Guardiola, although the latter said his side had been ‘fantastic.’ Chelsea next face Brighton while Man City will host Everton. Armstrong hails Uber dividends LANCE ARMSTRONG has said an early investment in Uber ‘saved’ his family after paying out €97 million in legal fees and settlements. The American, 47, was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from cycling for life in 2012 before admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs. He revealed he gave €87,000 to a venture capital fund that invested in the ridehailing app in 2010. In April, Armstrong agreed to pay €4.35 million to the
US government to settle a long-running lawsuit that could have cost him €86 million in damages. However, he said he felt he did not “get off scot free” as other settlements and legal fees meant he had to pay €97 million in total. Armstrong, who has five children, did not say how much he had earned from his Uber investment but added it was “too good to be true.” He explained that Uber, which was founded in 2009, was valued at €3.2 million
when he invested. The company was valued at €62.4 billion this year and is targeting a valuation of €104 billion in 2019. He added that he did not know he was investing in Uber when he gave the money to associate and entrepreneur Chris Sacca, who started Lowercase Capital in 2010. Armstrong retired after winning seven straight Tour titles from 1999 to 2005, finishing third in his comeback in 2009 before retiring again in 2011.
