BO DEREK brought Hollywood-style glamour to Almeria at the weekend. The American actress was in the city to unveil her star on the Almeria Walk of Fame and to receive the Almeria, Land of Cinema Homage award at the closing gala of the Almeria International Film Festival on Saturday night. “I adore Spain. It’s my second home, and especially Almeria. Almeria has a rich history of cinema. Many thanks for making me part of it. Best known for her memorable role in 1979 romcom ‘10’ starring Dudley Moore, Derek was in Almeria 18 years ago to shoot an episode of TV series Queen of Swords in various locations, including Texas Hollywood in Tabernas, San Jose in Nijar and the Alcazaba fortification in the capital. She now focuses on producing documentaries and said she hadn’t ruled out making one in Almeria. “There are many places where we want to go, and when it comes to deciding we prefer a city which looks after its visitors and with friendly people, as Almeria is showing me today.” Earlier in the week star of Indiana Jones and the Last Cru-

BRITISH cruise liner Oceana docked at Almeria Port on Monday morning, the fifth cruise ship to visit the port this month, this latest with capacity for nearly 2,300 passengers and just under 900 crew.

Two hurt TWO women aged 41 and 25 needed hospital treatment for minor injuries caused by a piece of roofing from an Almeria City shopping centre coming down in high winds in the city on Sunday afternoon.

ALMERIA Council is keen to promote the city as an ideal Christmas destination, and last week a delegation from the administration was in Castilla and Leon to spread the word about the provincial capital’s attractions. The council took part in the ‘Andalucia in Castilla and Leon professional days’ in Salamanca, Valladolid and Leon to inform estate agencies about the activities the administration is preparing for the

festive season and the city’s places of interest. The delegation was also at the Intur Valladolid 2018: International Inland Tourism Fair, taking the opportunity as well to give out information about Almeria’s naming as the 2019 Spanish Gastronomy Capital. “We have many visitors from Castilla and Leon who like to spend a few days of holiday in warm places like Almeria,” commented City Promotion Councillor Carolina Lafita.

“That’s why we have explained in the workshop with travel agencies for online reservations companies everything which the council has prepared for Christmas and in this way encourage visits to our city.” The councillor also said the delegation had taken the opportunity to talk to estate agencies about the impact on tourism of Leon city’s status as this year’s national gastronomy capital, reporting that “the evaluation was very positive.”

Family drama

ARGUMENT: The father of the teenager told the Guardia Civil there had been a family argument. GUARDIA CIVIL detained a 14-year-old on suspicion of threatening his brother with a knife and starting a fire in the family home. Almeria Guardia reported officers were first called out to reports of a house fire in the eastern area of the province. When they arrived at the scene smoke was billowing out of the property. Local Police were already there, neighbours informing the offices there was a youngster still inside. While they were waiting for firefighters to arrive, they noticed the father of the teenager trying to force his son to leave the house. The father subsequently informed officers he had gone out and left his two sons home alone, and an argument between the two had kicked off, one bringing out a knife. The other son got out the house, and when the father returned he discovered the brother who had had the knife starting the fire. When he attempted to get his son out he tried to injure himself, but eventually he managed to get him outside.

MORE than 70 Greenpeace activists of various nationalities staged a protest on kayaks on Monday morning in front of the Endesa power plant in Carboneras to demand the electricity company close it down. The protestors carried banners with the messages Turn off the Coal and No to Coal, claiming coal is the main cause of world climate change.

ALMERIA City Council announced it will be investing around €33,000 in 52 bullet and punch-proof vests for its Local Police force, on top of the 130 vests already supplied to officers. The council is also investing €310,000 in a new light urban fire engine for the Fire Extinction and Safety Service.

Boat sale THE Junta de Andalucia has put up for sale through the Andalucia Ports Public Agency 10 boats declared abandoned at ports in Adra, Roquetas de Mar and Villaricos. The boats have been taking up port space for more than six months without apparently being used and without payment of the corresponding taxes.

Hate crime THE Almeria Court has withdrawn a one-year prison sentence for a hate crime originally ordered for a young woman accused of anti-sematic posts on Facebook on the grounds the messages were written before the current version of the Penal Code came into force and had not directly incited hate.

Top Dhogs GALICIAN film Dhogs came out tops at last week’s Almeria International Film Festival, scooping awards for best performance, best director and second best film. The movie, which was shot in Lugo and the Tabernas desert, was pipped to the best film prize by Arantxa Echevarria’s Carmen y Lola.

Life on Mars THIS volcano field in the Canary Islands has been chosen as the location for a new experiment to test humanity’s capability of exploring other planets. Lanzarote’s Geoparque was chosen as the setting for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Pangaea-X experiment because of how similar its barren landscape is to the surface of Mars. The team has been working near the Geoparque’s Tinguaton Volcano. The ESA sent astronauts Herve

Stevenin and Matthias Maurer (pictured) to the island along with scientists and engineers as a trial run of a future mission to the Red Planet. Mugged at knifepoint GUARDIA CIVIL apprehended two young men on charges of mugging a woman at knifepoint in Roquetas de Mar. According to the victim, two youths got out of a car as she was passing and approached her, asking if she had cigarettes. One then pulled out a knife and threatened her while the other snatched her purse from her handbag. When she demanded they give her back her purse, the young man

wielding the knife hit her several times in the face, leading to injuries for which she subsequently required medical treatment in the El Poniente hospital. Guardia officers were able to identify the suspects’ vehicle leading to the detentions of the individuals identified as 21-year old J J S S and a 17-year-old. They were arrested on charges of robbery with violence and intimidation with a bladed weapon.

Fishy tale GUARDIA CIVIL arrested three individuals from Roquetas de Mar on charges of identity theft and a €20,000 fraud. The detentions followed a Roquetas restaurant owner’s report that someone had made a €6,000 order for fish from one of their suppliers using their business fiscal details. The Guardia discovered the order had been made using a system under which it is not necessary to pay for a delivery immediately on receipt. The

fraudster went on to increase the value of the order to €20,000. Officers arrested two suspects on November 12 when the supplier arranged a meeting with the person who made the order in a market in Granada Province. When they frisked the pair they found documentation with details related to the suspected fraud. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the individual who had arranged the meeting.

Support for social action VERA Council has shown its support for the Asprodalba association for the intellectually disabled, signing a collaboration agreement last week, to finance the expenses of the project for the expansion and adaption of a residency for adults, located in the town centre. Mayor Feliz Lopez, said his administration had recognised ‘the need to strengthen agreements and collaboration with different institutions involved in social action, as a formula which allows for the costeffective use of resources and obtaining maximum results.’ He continued, “Vera Council sees an obligation in collaborating with the Asprodalba association being vitally important, and having the resources to be able to continue the development of future programmes and projects to improve the quality of life for people with an intellectual disability who they assist.” Asprodalba Vice-President Antonia Mulero Lopez said the association was grateful to the council for their continued support, saying that with this municipal help, ‘Asprodalba is a reality, at the service of people with a disability.’

Bike lines on track for Adra council PLANS to build cycle lines between Adra centre and the Venta Nueva area are on track, the council reported. The most viable routes are currently being studied to ascertain which would be the best option for the approximately five-kilometre distance. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes, Councillor responsible for the EDUSI Sustainable and Integrated Development Strategy Carmen Belen Lopez, municipal experts, Local Police and representatives from the company which will put the bike lane project together met last week to analyse the alternatives, taking into account mobility, traffic and safety. The mayor said the project document should be finalised within weeks, making it clear it would incorporate the experts’

which is healthier.’ The bike lane project has a budget of approximately €700,000 and will be divided into a number of different stretches: 2,500 metres between Adra and the River Bridge; 1,800 metres from the bridge to La Curva and Cuatro Higueras;

1,200 metres from Cuatro Higueras to Venta Nueva. The project forms part of the Adra Sustainable and Integrated Development Strategy, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Funds and Adra council, 80 and 20 per cent respectively.

Weather damage cost AS reported in last week’s Euro Weekly News, torrential downpours left Garrucha’s beaches in a mess. The local council has now started to assess the cost of the damage to the municipal coastline and has announced it will be seeing financial assistance from the Andalucia and national governments to restore the beaches to their tourist ready best.

Garrucha mayor Maria Lopez said the council had already spent some €20,000 on the clean-up operation and would be requesting the Provincial Coasts Service provide extra sand for the regeneration of the beaches. The exceptionally heavy rainfall on October 16 caused the river Antas to overflow, leaving streets and school playgrounds caked in mud.

Child friendly court YOUNG representatives from the Vera Municipal Infancy and Adolescence Council took part in last week’s first National Junior Congress in Almeria City. Organised by Almeria Council, the theme of the congress was adolescent views against gender-based violence. The three-day event, at which the children were accompanied by Vera Education councillor Maria Montoya, looked at the issue of violence against women in the context of society, family, social media and school, and included presentations by speakers, debates and a manifesto reflecting the views of young participants.

Ultra challenge ONE of the toughest sporting challenges to be staged in the province takes place this weekend. The Costa Almeria Ultramarathon tomorrow (Saturday), offers runners the option of three different distances: an 84kilometre ultra route starting in Aguamarga, a 43-kilometre marathon route beginning in La Isleta and a 31-kilometre trail route setting off from San Jose, all finishing in El Toyo. Speaking at the presentation of the event last week, Almeria provincial government Tourism Delegate Angeles Martinez said the event gives participants the opportunity to enjoy practising sport in the beautiful natural surroundings of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. The Ultramarathon will be the last event in this year’s Active Almeria Sport-Tourism Programme. “Ever since we put the Active Almeria Programme into action we thought that we needed an event to challenge

Convent. There was also an exhibition about the probable origins of the gypsies in India and their arrival in Europe. Manuel Martinez Martinez

told participants, “Knowing the history of the Spanish gypsies is essential to eliminate their invisibility, to understand their situation in society and to break down the stereotypes coined for centuries.” He continued, “The history of the gypsy people is the product of a cultural disa gre e me nt be tw e e n tw o ways of seeing the world. Since 1499 there have been anti-gypsy measures and a negative stereotype forged which in 1749 favoured a

move to expel them. However, it ended up with a project to exterminate them, hence they physically separ at ed m en and wom en t o stop them reproducing and the survival of the ethnic group and their culture.” The professor explained t hat i n t he end t he pl an failed as it did not take into account the gypsy communities established in all areas of t he count r y at t hat time, including in Almeria, and many had time to flee. Equality and Social Ser-

Killed by own pets A MUM and her grown up daughter have been mauled to death by their own pet dogs in Spain in an attack that has rocked the local community. The bodies of the two women were found by their husbands after the gruesome attack by two French (Bordeaux) mastiffs left them with multiple bite wounds that proved fatal. The mother, aged 57, was covered in multiple bites that shocked paramedics attending, while the daughter, aged 41, is said to have suffered a severe neck injury. Neighbours in the residen-

FLIGHT FIGHT: Ryanair’s legal troubles continue.

Spain scolds Ryanair RYANAIR has been found guilty in Spain of violating the right to strike of cabin crews, and of breaching work safety regulations. Unions have revealed that the Labour Ministry has threatened to fine the budget airline on this basis, and for obstructing inspections. The company has been found to have been emailing or calling employees to check whether they were planning to stop work before the planned

strikes on July 25 and 26, and on September 28. The Labour Ministry has confirmed that it has ‘given the company notice of infractions,’ but refused to give further details. Ryanair has been clashing with unions for a year over contracts, pay, and work conditions, with the company using Irish legislation for its employment agreements even for those employees based in other countries.

In July, strikes by cabin and cockpit crews disrupted 600 flights in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland and Italy, affecting 100,000 travellers. On September 28, cabin crew walked out again in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands. For its part, Ryanair has said “We respect the labour rights of our employees in accordance with Irish, Spanish and EU legislation.”

Vox on the rise Far-right group makes waves ahead of regional poll By Joe Gerrard A FAR-RIGHT party has started to make inroads into the Spanish political mainstream ahead of regional elections in Andalucia next month. Vox, which was founded in 2013, now appears poised to score some of its first victories when Andalucian voters go to the polls on December 2. The party, led by Santiago Abascal, is known for its hard stance on immigration, nationalism and staunch opposition to regionalist movements in Cataluña and elsewhere. Its website lists support for the free market, ‘moral health’, and a centralised Spanish state. Critics have accused it of racism, sexism and of courting the support of fascists, neo-Nazis and sympathisers of former dictator Francisco Franco (Falangists), which the party denies. Vox has up until now failed to appeal to voters outside of a core far right base. Now new polling figures suggest it could be poised to attract supporters

from larger, more established parties. It comes as the party hit the headlines on several occasions recently as the media spotlight begins to shine on the once small fringe group. Figures from the GAD3 polling organisation show that the party could get up to 200,000 votes in the Andalucia election, up from forecasts of 150,000 a week earlier. Support for the party is particularly high in Almeria Province, where its anti-immigration message has resonated with voters, in an area which has taken in large numbers of African migrants. GAD3 data also shows growing support for the party in the provinces of Sevilla, Malaga and Granada. Vox has seen less success in Cadiz where momentum has slowed, and it has so far failed to make significant inroads into the Jaen, Cordoba and Huelva provinces, data showed. The polling firm’s findings also showed around 70 per cent of the party’s supporters are men. Around 10 per

cent of PP voters and 20 per cent of Ciudadanos backers are mulling voting for Vox on December 2, according to GAD3 research. The figures have reportedly started officials in the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos party. The former, and its predecessor the Alianza Popular (AP), has been the leading force on the Spanish right since Spain’s transition to democracy in the late 1970’s. PP figures fear its voters could be wooed by the party’s hard-line immigration stance, while Ciudadanos is concerned it could steal its unionist thunder. Ciudadanos was founded in Cataluña in 2006 on a pro-Spanish union platform. The research comes as the party faced scrutiny in the press recently. A campaign video from 2015 which featured a news reporter dressed in a hijab and claimed Andalucia was being ‘Islamised’ was posted online and slammed by social media users.

Rock row AT the Brussels summit on Sunday, European Union diplomats poured scorn on Spanish claims that British sovereignty over Gibraltar would end during Brexit trade talks next year. Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, used the Brussels conference to promote the assurances given to him after he threatened to block any Brexit deal without a veto over Gibraltar. He and Josep Borrell, his foreign minister, have claimed a non-legally binding guarantee that Spain would be consulted over the implementation of a trade deal to Gibraltar, would lead to shared sovereignty. However, EU diplomats have privately derided the claims, and branded the last-minute intervention by Pedro Sanchez ‘outrageous.’

President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, confirmed that both the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration on future trade had been approved. Speaking after the summit, May said: “I believe when it comes to it, MPs will be thinking about the need to deliver on the vote of the British people, and will be thinking about the impact of this deal on their constituents. “I think their constituents want to ensure that their jobs and livelihoods are protected, and that’s what this deal does.” However, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt admitted that the government could fall in the event that the deal is rejected in the House of Commons. President of the EU Commission, JeanClaude Juncker, appealed to MPs to accept the deal as it was now the only one on offer. “This is the best deal possible. I am

Bus driver positive for drugs

Missing Norah found A BRITISH woman with Alzheimer’s disease, who was reported missing in Benidorm, has been found alive and well at the bottom of a crevice. Sources reported that Norah disappeared on Saturday morning, with CCTV footage spotting her leave the Gran Bali hotel at 5.15am. The family appealed for help from the police and the community, revealing Norah, 63, had left the hotel without her phone or money. At the beginning of the fourth day of the search, they flew out from Britain to assist. Norah’s photo and a description of her clothes were spread across Benidorm by the devoted community, who organised search parties and began a social media campaign. On Tuesday afternoon, a man alerted the police to Norah’s whereabouts, near the outskirts of the resort. She had reportedly fallen into a crevice and was unable to free herself. Norah was found in ‘good condition,’ but taken to the Villajoyosa hospital as a precaution.

Rapist jailed THE Provincial Court of Malaga has sentenced a man to 11 years in prison for raping a waitress. He is banned from contacting her or getting within 500 metres for 17 years, and has been ordered to compensate her €33,000. The incident took place in Torre-

A SPANISH bus driver has been stopped twice in 17 days for driving while under the influence of drugs in Torre Pachecho. The 48-year-old, who lives in Murcia, now faces a €2,000 fine and a 12 point loss from his driving licence. The incidents took place on the RM-313 and the RM-14 respectively as he drove his bus on the route from Torre-Pacheco to Jumilla. On each occasion, there were at least 14 passengers on the bus. He was first stopped during random Cartegena police checks at the end of October. An initial saliva test showed a positive reading for both cocaine and cannabis. He was again stopped by the motorcycle division close to the A-30 in Torre-Pacheco earlier this month, and the test produced similar results. On both occasions, the buses were immobilised until a replacement driver arrived.

The 38-year-old proprietor of Shamrock in Palma was riding his Yamaha XVS when he left the road and collided with a post outside the Gesa building. Emergency services were quickly on the scene, but could do nothing to save the businessman. Guillermo played an active role in Palma life having transformed his business into an eclectic music, gastronomic and sports venue, attracting bands from across the island. The sailing enthusiast also sponsored the Shamrock rugby team. One of the many tributes posted on Facebook read: ‘His spirit will undoubtedly remain latent in Shamrock, the place where thousands of people from Palma had the privilege of vibrating to the best live concerts. RANKING HIGH: Malaga Province had the fifth highest rents on average in Spain. MALAGA is the fifth most expensive province for property rentals in Spain and has the highest difference between asking prices and agreed rates, according to an industry report. Figures from the Mitula Group’s Housing Price Report (PVMG) showed average monthly rent rates for flats and houses in Malaga Province stood at €1,367 from July to September. Malaga Province was also found to have the greatest difference be-

tween the asking price for properties and what tenants paid. The difference was 49.6 per cent, according to the report. The report’s authors said the rates could be linked to the province’s popularity with tourists. Other provinces popular with tourists such as Barcelona, Cadiz and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria also scored highly on the table coming second, eighth and ninth respectively. The Balearic Islands had the most expensive average monthly rates at

€1,673. The islands were followed by Barcelona Province, with an average rate of €1,539, the Madrid region with €1,479 and Toledo, €1,422. Ciudad Real, in the Castilla La Mancha region, was found to be the cheapest for rentals with an average rate of €407 per month. Ciudad Real was followed in the table by Caceres, in Extremadura, with average rates of €413 per month and Zamora, in Castilla y Leon, with €452.

In fact I saw a recent study that showed that 58 per cent of women and 46 per cent of men in Spain identify as feminists. Maybe the women’s figure could have been higher, but I was certainly encouraged by the percentage for males. As an ageing expat looking to settle on the Costa del Sol, it gives me s ome c o m f o r t t o th in k th at younger generations are becoming more and more progressive. Of course there are still battles to keep on fighting across the world for women, including equal pay, and I was pleased to read about the recent nationwide protests in Spain against gender violence. I have a holiday home in the centre of Fuengirola, and flew to Spain last weekend with some friends. As we were walking along the promenade, they were really impressed by the beach and the views, but my mate and his wife also commented on how clean the area is. Minutes later, as we were crossing the road, a female street cleaner turned the corner and mounted the pavement with ease on a brilliant tricycle complete with a small bin. She moved in and around two pillars and seemed happy in her job. My Spanish isn’t great but I managed to talk a bit to her, and asked about the cleaning machine. She said it was new. That it was electric, easy to use and made her job quicker and easier. Brilliant idea.

Mrs May has obtained the agreement of the 27 European Leaders to her proposed Brexit deal, which was probably the easiest part of her attempt to settle the divorce in a manner which she and her advisers believe is in the best interest of the UK. She immediately wrote an open letter to the British people encouraging them to pull together and support the deal, which on the face of things seems fine but in reality is empty rhetoric. What counts now is approval or rejection by Parliament and the people realistically have no say in this whatsoever unless there is a general election. The fact is that with a minority government which is in itself split, the Prime Minister will be trying to persuade many of her MPs as possible to vote in favour of the deal, but with the Labour Party currently indicating that it will vote against as well as the Northern Irish DUP, the likelihood of approval being obtained is frankly remote. Jacob Rees Mogg didn’t manage to obtain enough letters to demand a vote of no confidence in Mrs May but if by December 12 (B-DAY), the deal is voted down, it’s a reasonable expectation that there could be a leadership tussle and certainly another call for a snap election from Labour. A second referendum would be welcomed by many but is highly unlikely and even if the Brexit deal does struggle through Parliament, it still has to be approved by the European Council and the European Parliament.

Richard Shanley THE festive edition of Doctor Wh o wi l l b e sh o w n o n N e w Year’s Day on BBC One instead of Christmas Day for the first time since the drama’s return in 2005. It will be the first Doctor Who episode to debut on January 1 since the second part of David Tennant’s series exit aired on the first day of 2010. E x e c u t i v e p r o d u ce r Ch ris Chibnall said it would see Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor ‘face a terrifying alien threat.’ The current series - Whittaker’s first - will conclude on December 9. “We’re thrilled to be s tar t i n g t h e Ne w Ye a r w ith a bang on BBC One,” said Chibnall, who promised audiences “an action-packed, hour-long special adventure for all the family.”

Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s director of content, said: “We’re del i ght ed t he Doct or and her companions will be welcoming BBC One audiences into 2019 with this exciting new episode.” Accor di ng t o t he BBC, t he seasonal instalment will involve ‘a terrifying evil... from across the centuries of Earth’s history.” The Christmas Day edition of Doctor Who has been a TV fixture since Christopher Eccleston ushered in the show’s current era. Kylie Minogue, David Morrissey, Katherine Jenkins and Sir Michael Gambon are among the stars who have appeared in previous festive specials. Whittaker’s first full episode attracted a record audience for a new Doctor - 10.9 million viewers - last month.

AS we become increasingly smart about the ingredients in beauty products, we spend more time scrutinising the labels of our creams, shampoos and other essentials. But what do all of those little symbols on the side and bottom of our products really mean? Possibly the easiest to decipher is the number, for example ‘6’, followed by the letter ‘m’ for months. This is the PAO; period after opening. The symbol identifies the length of time after a product has been opened, in which it should be used. A flame symbol means what’s inside is flammable, and should be kept away from high heat and flames at all times. It is more commonly seen on bottles of hairspray, deodorant and nail polish remover because of the alcohol and propellant gas in these products. TO find the best diet to help minimise the effects of Hashimoto’s disease, it is first necessary to understand exactly what the disorder is, and how it affects the body. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a lifelong and progressive autoimmune disease, in which the immune system turns against the body’s own tissues and attacks the thyroid gland, causing a hormonal deficiency. The condition primarily affects middle-aged women, but can also occur in men and women of any age, as well as children, and often leads to an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism. Lean meat and seafood consumption is recommended for those suffering from Hashimoto’s disease, as its properties enhance the immune system, build muscle mass, and feed ligaments, tendons and joints. A nutritional supplement with turmeric is also beneficial to fighting the inflammatory process of the thyroid, because it is said to improve digestion, detoxify the liver and relieves arthritis pain.

BEAUTY enthusiasts in Vietnam are going to the extreme of setting their faces on fire to preserve their youth. While few healthcare centres in the country have been licensed to use fire therapy in medical treatment, some spas and beauty salons in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, still advertise the service to cure thousands of illnesses and rejuvenate skin. Bringing an open flame near the delicate facial skin hardly seems a safe way to achieve health and beauty results. In fact, some creams and soaps have been banned because they cause irritation and inflammation to the skin. Yet, men and women are allowing therapists to cover their faces with alcohol-soaked towels which are then set alight and kept on the skin for 30 seconds to one minute. The flame is then put out by placing a second dry towel over the first. The bizarre technique, which costs up to €10, reportedly helps with a variety of health problems such as headaches, sleeplessness, muscular pain and digestive system issues. But Vietnamese doctors and experts warn that undergoing the treatment at unlicensed or substandard facilities could threaten customers’ health and cause burns or asphyxiation.

Pause to prepare ‘ PA RT I N G , ’ a c c o r d i n g t o J u l i e t i n Shakespeare’s play, ‘is such sweet sorrow,’ and one which many of us living here in Spain often experience as we wave goodbye to families and close friends at one airport or another. The greater the love and the longer the parting of course, the greater the sorrow we feel and the more desperately we await the reunion. I still remember clearly the anguish I suffered nearly 60 years ago now when having just got engaged, my fiancee jetted off on a skiing holiday with one of her nursing friends. It was by far the longest two weeks of my life as I eagerly awaited her return. The followers of Jesus must have had very similar feelings as he left them promising that he would return in due time, and they certainly lived the rest of their lives in confident anticipation that they would be meeting up again. But time’s gone by and still his followers wait; though for many, the confidence that he will one day fulfil his

promise is wearing a little thin. And so as we enter that period in the Christian calendar known as Advent, which this year starts on December 2, i t ’s g o o d t o r e c a l l t h a t t h i s i s a t i m e when Christians are encouraged to remember not only that Jesus came into the world in Palestine some 2000 years ago but also that He promised one day to return in all His glory. And not only should we remember this promise, but also to ensure that we are ready, no matter how or when this may happen. For there’s an awful risk that just as the world wasn’t ready for him and rejected him when he came to be born in Bethlehem, so now we too have little thought of his pending return and are in great danger of ourselves rejecting him as and when he does. So as this Advent we prepare in so many ways for the fast approach of Christmas, making sure that our homes are suitably provisioned and decorated, let us also give some thought to the far more vital preparation of ourselves.

No shred, no matter how miniscule, could I find, so I switched it on again, and asked politely if it felt better now, and please would it print my desired document. ‘Paper jam,’ it reiterated smugly. With all the studied tolerance of Joyce Grenfell speaking to her class of

small children I said ‘There, there, I’ll sort it out for you.’ I removed the paper, faffed about with its paper guide and replaced the paper very carefully and very straight, switched it on and assured it that ‘It was fine now.’ ‘Paper jam.’ There was a stubborn hint to its reply. Joyce Grenfell was beginning to lose her grip on my capacity for tolera n c e . Wi t h p u r s e d l i p s and exaggerated selfcontrol I heaved out the desk upon which it and the laptop sat so that I could check all its vari-

ous wires. As is known to the less assiduous housewives, such as myself, moving a usually stationary piece of furniture will expose a contented gathering of assorted detritus, from which a merry vanguard of fluff will cavort gaily across the newly exposed floor space available to it. With resignation and a brush and pan I consigned it all to the bin and checked the wires, which were fine. ‘Paper jam.’ It chortled. I took a sharp intake of breath. What happened next?

Thriller - Michael Jackson THIS week sees the 36th anniversary of probably the most famous pop album of all time. Thriller by Michael Jackson was released on November 30, 1982. It was the follow up to 1979’s Off the Wall. The time between the two albums had been a very unhappy and introspective time for Jackson. Despite selling in massive numbers he was not satisfied with the album’s success. He wanted to make the greatest album of all time. He again brought in genius producer and arranger Quincy Jones and Cleethorpes’ very own English songwriter Rod Temperton. There was a backlash against disco at the

He alone is responsible for the bitter divisions within his own party. He backed a vote he didn’t need to have, then ‘scuttled off’ when things went belly up. A final thought: couldn’t he have a second bromance with Clegg over at err, Facepage? He’d be paid loads and he’d think he was doing something worthwhile. It wouldn’t let him do any real harm and the UK would be free of him in frontline politics. A win-win for everyone! This requires the buyer to withhold 3 per cent of the purchase price, which is paid to Spain’s tax agency on Form 211 as a guaranty against your liability to capital gains tax on your profit. Since you made no profit, you have no capital gains tax, and this deposit will be refunded to you. The Tax Agency has promised to make these returns in 90 days. Hah! Many non-resident sellers share your problem. About all you can do is to take your Form 211 to the tax office and complain.

As young people increasingly lose the ability to find their way unaided, according to studies, GPS systems (aka the Brits’ ‘satnavs’) are now so ubiquitous, so essential to 21st-century life that the world will apparently shudder to a standstill without them. Let’s hope Vladimir Putin isn’t reading this. Dedicated GPS manufacturers like TomTom and Garmin (the Kodaks of our era?) cling on tenuously as smartphone navigation improves exponentially, but for how long? In fact, is there still any advantage to buying a dedicated GPS unit f o r y o u r c a r, rath er th an sticking your smartphone on a dashboard mount? But the gaps are closing fast. Even some of the free smartphone navigation apps now offer live traffic information, you can com-

pensate for smartphone battery drain by plugging the thing in, a nd by dow nloa ding the ma ps you want in advance you can improve accuracy in case you lose mobile signal on the way. Fighting back, most GPS manufacturers now offer lifetime map updates on their devices - Catch 22 is that they are only for the area where you bought the device. Head to the USA or Australia or some such and downloa ding the ir ma ps c a n be

ludicrously expensive. Then there’s the ultimate scam: buying a new car, you may get free navigation and maps built-in. This year. Until update time when you pay, repeatedly, or all you’ve got left is a pretty ornament on your dashboard. If you do decide to go with a smartphone, you can certainly use the tried-and-trusted free apps from Google or Apple. Or indeed the rapidly-advancing alternative, Here WeGo, or Waze whose users actually feed back traffic information in real time, a boon if you regularly encounter traffic jams or roadworks. MapFactor sounds like a cosmetic, but it’s free and well reviewed, as is the hugely popular Sygic with 50 million downloads so far and counting. As for me, whatever device I use, it’s just wonderful to know these days that I can find almost anywhere with just an address, a GPS and a GPS override. That’s my wife.

Ford Focus Estate: A smooth operator THE all-new Ford Focus Estate is armed with a boot that’s almost as big as that of the Octavia, a car which was until very recently, the benchmark in the class. It’s also bigger than the boots of some models from the next class up, including, bizarrely, its supposedly bigger brother, the Mondeo Estate. You get the same choice of 1.0/1.5litre petrol, and 1.5/2-litre diesel engines of varying power outputs as you do in the hatchback. The Ford Estate also gets Ford’s Ghia-esque Vignale treatment, though whether it’s worth stumping up the €30,000 or more it will set you back, is highly debatable. More value can be found with one of the lesser versions, like the ST Line. This gives you a specification roughly on a par with the slightly dowdy Zetec but with sportier looks, larger alloy wheels and lowered suspension, making the

Focus into a warm hatch with a bigger boot. The boot isn’t just big, it’s rather clever with a neat folding floor which can be propped up to form a barrier which stops smaller items sliding around within its vastness.

You can also slip the retractable load cover away into a special compartment underneath, when you’re not using it. There is also much more room both up -front and in the back seats.

While the design of the dashboard is modern enough, the quality of the materials used is less than uplifting. Moreover, it is not possible to opt for a digital dashboard (like you can in a Golf), and the infotainment interface on the central touchscreen is a little dated. However, start driving the Focus and it’s very easy to forget these foibles. The steering is

light and crisp, and the front wheels bite neatly, leading the nose exactly where you want it to be. All the while, you can adjust the car’s attitude on the throttle, shut it sharply and the Focus pivots around gently and progressively. In addition, the Ford Estate deals with bumps at every speed beautifully, and at least as well as any rival. Unlike the hatchback, all estates get fully-independent rear suspension, regardless of engine size - lesser hatches get an inferior twist-beam - so the good news is that every estate will ride and handle this deftly. Overall the Focus is a smooth, relaxing, exciting drive, and finally practical enough to be recommendable.

The steering is light and agile, though at speed I found the feedback just a little muted. Top speed is 209kph (130 mph) and the 0-100kph time is crisp at 8.3 seconds. Average fuel economy is impressive at 20.8kpl (58.9 mpg) and emissions are 128g/km. As a family vehicle, the C4 Space Tourer is hard to fault. It delivers style, space, comfort and economy at prices which undercut most key rivals in the sector, and should be on the short-list of anyone planning to buy an MPV.
