A COURT has ruled a former police chief who had been struck off can return to his position and be repaid any salary lost in the meantime. Esteban Torres had been Chief of the Velez-Malaga Local Police and an inspector in the National Police until February 2017 when a council vote of no confidence forced him to step down. A judge has now ruled Torres should be reinstated and backpaid the salary he stopped receiving more than 18 months ago. He had been replaced in the interim by Anderes Montoya de Hombre. The court explained Velez-Malaga Council has not been: “In any way competent to agree to the decision, since the power lay only and exclusively with the mayor.” The judge continued: “It is appropriate to declare the challenged decision null and void, and return the complainant to the position of Chief of the Local Police with the corresponding economic and administrative rights.” Following the ruling, Torres, aged 59, told one publication of his, “satisfaction,” at the ruling at what he considered an, “unfair and unjustified decision.” He had served as Chief of Police since August 2012, when he was appointed in a process organised by the then mayor, Francisco Delgado. Last year, Torres was dismissed after being forced to take responsibility for the actions of his own officers following an incident earlier that year. A DOG has been rescued by a vet after ingesting rat poison illegally put down in Almuñecar. The environmental wing of the Guardia Civil, SEPRONA, is investigating after an Almuñecar local laid the banned substance on his fruit farm. The 41-year-old had been hanging poison from his trees to prevent rats from eating his avocados. A woman was forced to rush her dog to a vet after she saw it eating two of the bags of poison while she walked it near the farm. Police began investigating after receiving a complaint from the dog’s owner, and after searching the farm, found 10 small bags of poison.

Poster fun NERJA’S mayor Rosa Arrabal, has revealed the town’s poster for Christmas 2018. The poster “reflects the great wonder with which it has been made and represents the traditional objects of Christmas,” she said.
Back home after rock fall RESIDENTS of an urbanisation in Torrox have been told they can return to their homes after a recent rock fall forced them out. Officials allowed residents of the Calaceite neighbourhood to come home after a landslide broke windows and doors in one apartment block, and prompted technicians to clear the area and inspect the damage. Technicians from the municipal ICS consulting and engineering company carried out a thorough inspection of the site, according to the community vice-president, Miguel Soto. He said, “initially the Local Police came shortly after the rock fall occurred and told us we should leave, but those of us who had no other place to go have stayed, and today the technicians have told us that we can continue to be here, there is no danger in our houses.”

THE road between Algarrobo and Competa was closed briefly due to landslides. One section of the A-7206 was closed after rocks and soil fell onto the road, leaving it difficult to pass. Maintenance workers from the Junta de Andalucia later inspected the area and put in place fences to protect cars from further rock fall. Officials warned a security mesh would be needed to prevent further incidents. The closure prevented around 50 students in Sayalonga from attending school at the IES Miraya del Mar in Torre del Mar and Trayamar in Algarrobo, as their usual school transport was unable to reach them. Residents in Sayalonga were forced to make detours through country roads in Competa, Torrox and Arenas to get to the coast. The incident comes after last week the coast road between Torrox and Nerja was also cut off when a five-ton boulder fell from the rock face above.

THIS volcano field in the Canary Islands has been chosen as the location for a new experiment to test humanity’s capability of exploring other planets. Lanzarote’s Geoparque was chosen as the setting for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Pangaea-X experiment because of how similar its barren landscape is to the surface of Mars. The team has been working near the Geoparque’s Tinguaton Volcano. The ESA sent astronauts Herve
Stevenin and Matthias Maurer (pictured) to the island along with scientists and engineers as a trial run of a future mission to the Red Planet. The project involves geology training with the crew working with the latest navigation tools, remote sensing equipment, 3D imaging devices and geosciences tools. “The Pangaea-X crew explores the barren and dry landscape of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain, to prepare for the day when we set foot on other worlds,” the

Spanish galleon A REPLICA of the first ship to sail around the world is docking in Motril Port until Sunday. The galleon is a replica of La Nao Victoria which embarked on its voyage in 1519, arriving back in 1522 under the command of Fernando de Magallenes and Juan Sebastian Elcano. The trip took in 78,000 kilometres and was only 26 metres long and seven metres wide built from pine and oak.
This is the second time the ship has visited Motril, after first mooring at the port in 2011, attracting hundreds of visitors. The replica also completed a voyage around the world between 2004 and 2006, visiting 17 countries. Visiting hours are 10am to 6.30pm daily, and cost €4 per adult and €2 for children aged between five and 10. Families with two adults and three children pay €10.

Row over poster POLITICIANS in Torrox are demanding the withdrawal of a controversial poster celebrating the Fiesta de Migas. Members of the opposing PSOE, IU, FUCSI and TU parties tabled an urgent motion at a council meeting pushing to take down the poster for the 37th edition of the annual festival on December 16. In solidarity NEARLY 1,500 students filled the streets of Velez-Malaga to protest against domestic abuse. The march, involving students from 12 schools in the municipality, aimed to raise awareness of the issue and pay tribute to victims of domestic abuse. Councillor for Social Welfare, Zoila Martin, said Spain was facing “a problem that unfortunately this year has taken 44 women and three children in our country.” She added: “In Velez-Malaga we work in a coordinated manner, both with health centres and Local and National Police, and the Municipal Information Centre for Women, to protect the victims of violence in our municipality. “But in order to help and protect the victims and fight to eradicate this social scourge, it is very important to condemn

Sweet like Chocolate AN animal charity in Axarquia has put out a special appeal to find a home for a sixyear-old dog, named Chocolate. Diane McClelland from Axarquia Animal Rescue said, “we have a very special case in our care at the moment, a Podenco called Chocolate who we were trying to catch for about three years.” She added, “we finally managed to rescue her,” before Chocolate went on to have 10 puppies, all of whom have been rehomed while their mother still needs a per-
manent owner. Chocolate is described as a ‘small/medium-sized dog, 58cm from nose to tail and 37cm tall.’ Diane says the dog will be neutered as soon as she settles in. Chocolate is good with other dogs but her fosterers are unsure whether she will get along with cats or children. She is currently being socialised and is vaccinated, chipped and has a passport. Crop theft crackdown THE mayor of Velez-Malaga has promised to crack down on avocado thefts in the countryside. Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer told representatives of the Agrarian Association of Young Farmers, he would increase surveillance as well as clamp down on the control of sales of the crop. He claimed police presence on rural roads near avocado farms would increase, while inspections of the origins of the fruit in shops and street markets would also be ramped up. The politician explained: “It is essential to prevent these robberies, since they affect the work and effort of many families in our city.” Earlier this month, officers from the National Police arrested a man in Velez-Malaga for allegedly stealing nine tonnes of fruit from farms in Almayate. Police claim the man, who has not yet been named, broke into 13 farms over four years since 2014, stealing 9,397 kilos of fruit worth €26,926. Officers say he accessed the farms by jumping over fences or cutting through them before stealing fruit, mostly avocados. The suspect allegedly confronted any owners who caught him in the act.

Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million.

Free Spanish course NERJA Council is offering a ninemonth Spanish course for beginners. The course, run by the town hall’s Women’s Department, will run until June 2019, Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am to 10am, and is open to both men and women. To apply, submit a provisional application form at the Centro de Informacion a la Mujer on Calle Diputacion 2 on the ground floor, or by email to talleres@nerja.es. The course costs €20 and each class must have at least seven attendees. Prospective students will receive a phone call or email confirming their place and will be asked to go back to the Women’s Department and fill in another application form, taking an identity card and bank details to pay. Course materials will also be paid for by the student. The council says those interested can register at any time, simply paying for the number of months they have attended. Another free course will take place at the Chaparil School on Calle Chanquete until June on Tuesdays from 3.30pm to 6.30pm for beginners, and Wednesdays from 5pm to 6.30pm for intermediates. DOZENS of Spanish lorry drivers have been held up in France’s recent round of strikes. Drivers of lorries carrying shipments of tropical fruits from Axarquia have been delayed, leading some supermarkets to cancel orders of mangos and avocados. The subtropical fruit sector has reportedly made losses of up to 70 per cent after orders were suspended during France’s strike over fuel tax hikes. Protestors in France, known as the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) after the safety vests drivers are re-

quired to carry in their cars in France, are said to be seriously damaging trade. The strike started on November 17 when a group of protestors began blocking roads in protest against the price of diesel, which increased by 16 per cent this year in France, while further tax hikes have been announced for next year. Demonstrations have attracted around 300,000 people from around France who have blocked roads and barricaded the entrances to some petrol stations, preventing many transporters from crossing the country. The
protests, which have turned violent at several points, killed two and left 750 people injured, including 136 police officers. Some major supermarkets have suspended shipments of fruit to the EU until France’s roads have been cleared. Carlos Ojeda, commercial director of Axarquia company Frutas Montosa, one of the largest sellers of sub-tropical fruit in the region, said the company was suffering delays delivering mangos and avocados, “forcing us to make use of the stock we have in France.”

Water concerns THE Andalucian Town Ombudsman will look into the quality of water in Velez-Malaga. The body will look into the issue after local residents and members of the Izquiera Unida (IU) party complained that a build-up of calcium in the supply was damaging infrastructure and appliances. Alicia Perez, a councillor for IU, claimed the problem began in 2015 after work was carried out connecting the municipal water supply with wells at Molino de las Monjas. She says her party has been forced to ask the Ombudsman to intervene due to the ‘inability’ of the council to find a solution. Members of Izquierda Unida claimed water from the Molino de las Monjas well contains higher than normal levels of calcium, and is affecting households

The council rejected these claims at the time, saying the water, ‘meets quality requirements.’ A spokesman for the council’s Department for the Environment added, “the water in Caleta de Velez comes exclusively
from Axaragua, we do not understand the smear campaign that IU has been carrying out.” Both water company Aqualia and Velez-Malaga Council have confirmed the water is drinkable, regardless of its source.

Vandalism continues A SPATE of recent vandalism in Velez-Malaga has continued with eight bins burnt down in one week. The growing problem has prompted local politicians to push for security cameras to be installed throughout the municipality. They claim strategically placed cameras may help to find the perpetrators. According to Local Police, vandals burnt down bins on Calle Cipriano Maldonado and two others on Plaza de la Axarquia in the early hours of the morning. Earlier this month, VelezMalaga Council announced it had been forced to spend €72,000 replacing bins damaged by vandals. The town hall called on residents to help crack down on anti-social behaviour after it emerged four hooded people
had burned down two recycling containers on the intersection of Calle Arroyo Hondo and Calle Camino Viejo. The fire later spread to two parked cars, causing further damage. The mayor of Velez-Malaga announced the bill for tackling the town’s vandalism problem had reached €1 million a year. Vox on the rise Far-right group makes waves ahead of regional poll A FAR-RIGHT party has started to make inroads into the Spanish political mainstream ahead of regional elections in Andalucia next month. Vox, which was founded in 2013, now appears poised to score some of its first victories when Andalucian voters go to the polls on December 2. The party, led by Santiago Abascal, is known for its hard stance on immigration, nationalism and staunch opposition to regionalist movements in Cataluña and elsewhere. Its website lists support for the free market, ‘moral health’, and a centralised Spanish state. Critics have accused it of racism, sexism and of courting the support of fascists, neoNazis and sympathisers of for-

Now new polling figures suggest it could be poised to attract supporters from larger, more established parties. It comes as the party hit the
headlines on several occasions recently as the media spotlight begins to shine on the once small fringe group. Figures from the GAD3 polling organisation show that the party could get up to 200,000 votes in the Andalucia election, up from forecasts of 150,000 a week earlier.
Support for the party is particularly high in Almeria Province, where its anti-immigration message has resonated with voters, in an area which has taken in large numbers of African migrants. GAD3 data also shows growing support for the party in the provinces of Sevilla, Malaga
and Granada. Vox has seen less success in Cadiz where momentum has slowed, and it has so far failed to make significant inroads into the Jaen, Cordoba and Huelva provinces, data showed. The polling firm’s findings also showed around 70 per cent of the party’s supporters are men. Around 10 per cent of PP voters and 20 per cent of Ciudadanos backers are mulling voting for Vox on December 2, according to GAD3 research. The figures have reportedly started officials in the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos party. The former, and its predecessor the Alianza Popular (AP), has been the leading force on the Spanish right since Spain’s transition to democracy in the late 1970’s. PP figures fear its voters could be wooed by the party’s hard-line immigration stance,
while Ciudadanos is concerned it could steal its unionist thunder. Ciudadanos was founded in Cataluña in 2006 on a pro-Spanish union platform. The research comes as the party faced scrutiny in the press recently. A campaign video from 2015 which featured a news reporter dressed in a hijab and claimed Andalucia was being ‘Islamised’ was posted online and slammed by social media users. The party’s Jaen branch also distanced itself from one of its supporters tweeted to celebrate the death of two young members of the leftist Podemos party in a traffic accident. A Barcelona restaurant cancelled a reservation made by local Vox members for their ‘Cañas por España’ (Beers for Spain) event saying it did not want to be associated with the group.
Spain scolds Ryanair FLIGHT FIGHT: Ryanair’s legal troubles continue.
RYANAIR has been found guilty in Spain of violating the right to strike of cabin crews, and of breaching work safety regulations.
Unions have revealed that the Labour Ministry has threatened to fine the budget airline on this basis, and for obstructing inspections.
The company has been found to have been emailing or calling employees to check whether they were planning to stop work before the planned
strikes on July 25 and 26, and on September 28. The Labour Ministry has confirmed that it has ‘given the company notice of infractions,’ but refused to give further details. Ryanair has been clashing with unions for a year o v e r c o n t r a c t s , p a y, a n d work conditions, with the company using Irish legislation for its employment agreements even for those employees based in other countries. In July, strikes by cabin and cockpit crews disrupted 600 flights in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland and Italy, affecting 100,000 travellers. On September 28, cabin crew walked out again in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands. For its part, Ryanair has s a i d “ We r e s p e c t t h e labour rights of our employees in accordance with Irish, Spanish and EU legislation.”

Going digital BANKING groups BBVA and Santander have joined the EU International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (IATBA). EU officials have revealed that the IATBA will launch in the first financial quarter of 2019, with the aim of developing EU blockchain regulation and delivering EU wide blockchain applications. BBVA recently carried out a €132 million loan on a blockchain network through a group of three funding banks including French banking group BNP Paribas and Japan’s Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG).

CGD offloads banks PORTUGUESE state-owned banking firm Caixa Geral de Depositos (CGD) has entered into two separate transactions to divest stakes in its foreign subsidiaries Banco Caixa Geral and Mercantile Bank. In the first deal, CGD has agreed to sell 99.79 per cent of Spanish subsidiary Banco Caixa Geral to Abanca Corporacion Bancaria for a sum of €364 million. Banco Caixa Geral annual turnover of €7 billion and a network of 110 offices, the three key markets being: Extremadura, Galicia

In the second deal, CGD selected South African retail bank Capitec Bank to acquire Mercantile Bank for €201 million through a bidding process. Mercantile Bank’s core business is banking for small to medium-sized
enterprises and entrepreneurs, an area that Capitec is seeking to expand in. For CGC the sale of Banco Caixa Geral and Mercantile Bank is part of a recapitalisation plan under which it is looking to offload its non-core operations outside of Portugal. The transactions will be subject to meeting a variety of conditions including regulatory approvals where applicable. The process will also be subject to the legal requirements of both Spain and South Africa.
THE latest OECD Economic Survey of Spain projects growth of 2.6 per cent this year, 2.2 per cent in 2019 and 1.9 per cent in 2020. It lays out an agenda for making the economy more inclusive and enabling further expansion, while noting sizeable risks to the global outlook. The survey highlights a range of regional disparities across Spain, with wide variation in income inequality, poverty, labour markets and educational outcomes, as well as low intra-regional migration.

Room boom SUNNY OUTLOOK: Solarpack’s future looks bright. SPANISH solar company Solarpack will launch on the stock market on December 5, the National Securities Market Commission has revealed. Solarpack will float 38.5 per cent of its shares for purchase by institutional investors, giving it a market capitalisation of between €260 and €306 million. The company has set an indicative and non-binding price range of €8-10 per share. Funds raised will be invested in acquiring operating as-
sets in Spain, in the company’s wide portfolio of projects, and in the development of new ones. Solarpack is continuing the development and construction of the Granja project in Chile, the Monclova and Grullas plants in Spain and the KA2 project in India. It is the fifth company to go public in Spain this year, and Solarpack now has a presence in Spain, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Colombia, USA, South Africa, Malaysia, Vietnam and India.

Sanchez talks up Cuba SPAIN’S Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has paid a two-day visit to Cuba to enhance economic and political ties between the two nations. Sanchez’s trip is the first by a Spanish prime minister in more than three decades, a sign that Madrid is willing to expand cooperation with Cuba, which has been reaching out to European countries amid deteriorating ties with the United States. Spain is Cuba’s third largest trading partner,
with a bilateral exchange of €1.1 billion last year. More than 100 Spanish companies operate in Cuba, most in the tourism sector through partnerships between Spanish hotel chains and Cuban firms. Sanchez was accompanied by his Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, as well as a group of 200 entrepreneurs from different sectors.

Leading IBEX firms post profit figures THE biggest companies listed on Sp a i n ’s st o c k ex change m a d e m o r e th an €30.7 billion in profits between them from January to September this year, about 1.6 per cent less than 2017. If these losses are excluded the firms made almost €33.8 billion in total, an increase of 10.9 per cent compared t o t h e f i r st n in e months of last year, figures show. The figures exclude those from the fashion firm and owners of Zara Inditex, which posts its profit figures two months after other

In the energy sector, Endesa made almost €1.2 billion, an increase of almost 10 per cent, while Iberdrola’s profits fell by 13.5 per cent to more than €2 billion. Naturgy and the Cellnex telecommunications company were the only two companies to post losses. The figures come amidst concerns over an economic slowdown in Spain due to rising oil prices, the tariff trade wars provoked by the United States and ongoing uncertainty over Brexit.

Minister house firm claims SPAIN’S Economy Minister has said she has long-since ended connections with a company some have alleged was set up by her family to dodge taxes on a home purchase. Nadia Calviño said she ceased to have relations with Aldael Consultants in 2004, four years after it was founded. Her denial comes as a national Spanish newspaper claimed Calviño had used the company to buy a house in a Madrid suburb and was able to save thousands in taxes. Economy Ministry sources said Calviño had ‘zero’ ties with the firm. Calviño’s professional and ministerial activity was separate from the firm as shown by the minister’s declarations of income and salary which are in the public domain, the sources added. The newspaper making the allegations claimed Calviño used the company, created by her and her husband in 2000, to buy the property in the Mirasierra area of Madrid. The purchase through the company would have saved Calviño tens of thousands in tax bills, according to the same newspaper. The practice is legal as deductions are applied according to Tax Agency criteria. The newspaper also alleged Calviño and her husband hid their control of the firm behind two ‘frontmen’ who are listed as the official owners in Madrid’s Mercantile Registry. Records show the company had no employees at the end of last year and that its declared assets were worth €1.6 million.

Capitalist through and through LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I DIDN’T have the advantage of hailing from a rich or privileged background. The only thing my parents had to hand me on a plate, were the dietary minimums they could afford, from the sparse income my father could glean from a country all but wiped out from the ravages of a war. We had an outside toilet, with carefully cut squares of newspaper dangling from a piece of string, and our biggest culinary delight was rabbit, when my dad had the good fortune to knock one down in his capacity as an overnight lorry driver collecting fruit and vegetables from Covent Garden. We couldn’t use one of our three small bedrooms on account of the damp running down the walls, and I became the last in my class to obtain ‘long trousers,’ simply because my parents couldn’t afford to buy them. Both my parents, and indeed, to my knowledge the whole family, were staunch Labour supporters. When I was around 10 years old, my father’s employers went out of business. I couldn’t grasp all the implications of this disas-
REWARDS: Why shouldn’t people enjoy the fruits of their businesses? ter, but can clearly remember my dad telling my tearful mother that ‘all of his mates were now out of work.’ Is it therefore any wonder that as soon as my young mind could grasp the fundamentals, I began to search for a more acceptable alternative to the undoubted poverty and struggle of those early days? These early lessons would soon lead me unerringly along the path of capitalism and the policies of the right. Consequently, when today I hear of the vast sums earned by leaders of in-
dustry, it fazes me not one iota. If an individual is capable of creating a company which enables its employees, often running into thousands, to live, eat and lead a happy and comfortable existence, why shouldn’t they be rewarded with a large yacht, or drive a Bentley? To me it makes utter common sense that they should reap the harvest of their endeavours, and also in the process, create goals and examples for budding future industrial leaders. We are not all equal. This ridiculous leftwing bias against anyone who has the acumen

It’s not rocket science Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I USE McAfee to protect my computer. I know there are loads of free ones out there but I’ve used the same one for years and, to be honest, the free ones, in my experience, are always trying to download something I don’t want and it’s often the case with this stuff that you have to uncheck the box not to get it. So, I got a notice saying my account was coming up for renewal. I used to have automatic renewal but stopped when I found if I waited I’d get offered a deal and, sure enough, the offer was if I renewed in the next 24 hours I could get it for two years at a discounted price plus a £40 cash back offer. I thought I would take a closer look at that deal. The trouble was, when I tried to renew, the offer wasn’t there. This was about 9pm by the way. I went to the ‘contact us’ section and found they had a live chat option so I thought I’d have go at that. I filled in the usual bits and bobs - email address, username blah blah and then got a message from a person whose name I could not pronounce
and even tell what gender they were. I don’t think there were even any vowels in the name but it would score about 400 points in Scrabble. They asked how they could help and I explained the situation and was told ‘no problem.’ They asked what package I wanted and I asked what ones were available. They told me a few different options and I asked what was best. They told me and I said OK, paid for it and downloaded it. I then realised it had one thing different in it that was a bit of a nuisance so I decided they had flogged me the wrong one. This meant I now had to start the whole live chat thing again. They cancelled the first one they had sold me and gave me the second one. Then I had to download anther form to get my £40 cash back. It was now 1.30am! The moral of this grump is: don’t make life difficult. Just tell me my renewal is coming up and this is the best price. Don’t make me fill in forms. Life would be so much easier if you didn’t have 10 different deals for the same thing. A simple ‘Dear Sir, your renewal is due. It’s £39 and this is our best discounted price. As young people increasingly lose the ability to find their way unaided, according to studies, GPS systems (aka the Brits’ ‘satnavs’) are now so ubiquitous, so essential to 21st-century life that the world will apparently shudder to a standstill without them. Let’s hope Vladimir Putin isn’t reading this. Dedicated GPS manufacturers like TomTom and Garmin (the Kodaks of our era?) cling on tenuously as smartphone navigation improves exponentially, but for how long? In fact, is there still any advantage to buying a dedicated GPS unit f o r y o u r c a r, ra th er th an sticking your smartphone on a dashboard mount? And if you go that route (literally), are the freebie apps fine or does paying get you something better? Using a dedicated GPS does s till o ff e r a f e w m in o r ad v a n -

It’s not dependent on the availability of a mobile phone signal, it doesn’t nibble away at your data plan, it won’t use up your phone’s battery, because it’s a one-trick-pony it may be slightly more accurate than your multipurpose phone, and a good GPS should be faster at recalculating your route. But the gaps are closing fast. Even some of the free smartphone navigation apps now offer live traffic information, you can com-
pensate for smartphone battery drain by plugging the thing in, a nd by dow nloa ding the ma ps you want in advance you can improve accuracy in case you lose mobile signal on the way. Fighting back, most GPS manufacturers now offer lifetime map updates on their devices - Catch 22 is that they are only for the area where you bought the device. Head to the USA or Australia or some such and downloa ding the ir ma ps c a n be
ludicrously expensive. Then there’s the ultimate scam: buying a new car, you may get free navigation and maps built-in. This year. Until update time when you pay, repeatedly, or all you’ve got left is a pretty ornament on your dashboard. If you do decide to go with a smartphone, you can certainly use the tried-and-trusted free apps from Google or Apple. Or indeed the rapidly-advancing alternative, Here WeGo, or Waze whose users actually feed back traffic information in real time, a boon if you regularly encounter traffic jams or roadworks. MapFactor sounds like a cosmetic, but it’s free and well reviewed, as is the hugely popular Sygic with 50 million downloads so far and counting. As for me, whatever device I use, it’s just wonderful to know these days that I can find almost anywhere with just an address, a GPS and a GPS override. That’s my wife.

Richard Shanley THE festive edition of Doctor Who will be shown on New Year’s Day on BBC One instead of Christmas Day for the first time since the drama’s return in 2005. It will be the first Doctor Who episode to debut on January 1 since the second part of David Tennant’s series exit aired on the first day of 2010. Executive producer Chris Chibnall said it would see Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor ‘face a terrifying alien threat.’ The current series - Whittaker’s first - will conclude on December 9. “We’re thrilled to be starting the New Year with a bang on BBC One,” said Chibnall, who promised audiences “an action-packed, hour-long special adventure for all the family.” Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s director of content, said: “We’re delighted the Doctor and her companions will be welcoming BBC One audiences into 2019 with this exciting new episode.” According to the BBC, the seasonal instalment will involve ‘a terrifying evil... from across the centuries of Earth’s history.”

The Christmas Day edition of Doctor Who has been a TV fixture since Christopher Eccleston ushered in the show’s current era. Kylie Minogue, David Morrissey, Katherine Jenkins and Sir Michael Gambon are among the stars who have appeared in previous festive specials. Whittaker’s first full episode attracted a record audience for a new Doctor - 10.9 million viewers - last month.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a lifelong and progressive autoimmune disease, in which the immune system turns against the body’s own tissues and attacks the thyroid gland, causing a hormonal deficiency. The condition primarily affects middle-aged women, but can also occur in men and women of any age, as well as children, and often leads to an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism. It is advisable to see a doctor if you begin suffering from the first four symptoms for no apparent reason, as untreated, the disease can cause a number of other health problems. According to Long Life Clinic of Marbella, it is very important to maintain control of diet, as excess calories and fat interfere with hormonal imbalance.

gland which in turn benefits the cardiovascular and arterial system. A diet based on fruit and vegetables is ideal for strengthening the immune system as they are gluten free and have natural sweetening properties, reducing a craving for carbohydrates. Lean meat and seafood consumption is recommended for those suffering from Hashimoto’s disease, as its properties enhance the immune system, build muscle mass, and feed ligaments, tendons and joints.
BEAUTY enthusiasts in Vietnam are going to the extreme of setting their faces on fire to preserve their youth. While few healthcare centres in the country have been licensed to use fire therapy in medical treatment, some spas and beauty salons in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, still advertise the service to cure thousands of illnesses and rejuvenate skin. Bringing an open flame near the delicate facial skin hardly seems a safe way to achieve health and beauty results. In fact, some creams and soaps have been banned because they cause irritation and inflammation to the skin. Yet, men and women are allowing therapists to cover their faces with alcohol-soaked towels which are then set alight and kept on the skin for 30 seconds to one minute. The flame is then put out by placing a second dry towel over the first. The bizarre technique, which costs up to €10, reportedly helps with a variety of health problems such as headaches, sleeplessness, muscular pain and digestive system issues. But Vietnamese doctors and experts warn that undergoing the treatment at unlicensed or substandard facilities could threaten customers’ health and cause burns or asphyxiation.

In fact I saw a recent study that showed that 58 per cent of women and 46 per cent of men in Spain identify as feminists. Maybe the women’s figure could have been higher, but I was certainly encouraged by the percentage for males. As an ageing expat looking to settle on the Costa del Sol, it gives me s ome c o m f o r t t o th in k th at younger generations are becoming more and more progressive. Of course there are still battles to keep on fighting across the world for women, including equal pay, and I was pleased to read about the recent nationwide protests in Spain against gender violence. Heavy weather MY husband and I have been living on the Costa del Sol for 16 years now and have loved every minute. We count ourselves lucky to have been able to retire to the sun and take a welcome break from 40 plus years of works. But every winter we hear the same thing; people complaining about the winters in Spain. I do understand the houses here are not always as insulated as they are in the UK and some people do suffer from the cold, but I do wish people would remember how lucky we all are to benefit from blue skies and warm weather most of the year. I have a holiday home in the centre of Fuengirola, and flew to Spain last weekend with some friends. As we were walking along the promenade, they were really impressed by the beach and the views, but my mate and his wife also commented on how clean the area is. Minutes later, as we were crossing the road, a female street cleaner turned the corner and mounted the pavement with ease on a brilliant tricycle complete with a small bin. She moved in and around two pillars and seemed happy in her job. My Spanish isn’t great but I managed to talk a bit to her, and asked about the cleaning machine. She said it was new. That it was electric, easy to use and made her job quicker and easier. Brilliant idea.
IN the words of Kenneth Wolstenholme at the end of the 1966 World Cup Final, ‘They think it’s all over’ but in reality it’s not. Mrs May has obtained the agreement of the 27 European Leaders to her proposed Brexit deal, which was probably the easiest part of her attempt to settle the divorce in a manner which she and her advisers believe is in the best interest of the UK. She immediately wrote an open letter to the British people encouraging them to pull together and support the deal, which on the face of things seems fine but in reality is empty rhetoric. What counts now is approval or rejection by Parliament and the people realistically have no say in this whatsoever unless there is a general election. The fact is that with a minority government which is in itself split, the Prime Minister will be trying to persuade many of her MPs as possible to vote in favour of the deal, but with the Labour Party currently indicating that it will vote against as well as the Northern Irish DUP, the likelihood of approval being obtained is frankly remote. Jacob Rees Mogg didn’t manage to obtain enough letters to demand a vote of no confidence in Mrs May but if by December 12 (B-DAY), the deal is voted down, it’s a reasonable expectation that there could be a leadership tussle and certainly another call for a snap election from Labour. A second referendum would be welcomed by many but is highly unlikely and even if the Brexit deal does struggle through Parliament, it still has to be approved by the European Council and the European Parliament.

Christmas lights on ONE of the biggest nights of the festive calendar takes place in Malaga tomorrow, the switching on of the Christmas lights on Calle Larios. This year for the first time, Malaga City Council has organised three light shows, giving more people a chance to watch the annual extravaganza. Also new to this year’s festivities will be an interactive element, with officials handing out 10,000 luminous wands to members of the crowd who will then form part of the light show. The city’s councillor for Fiestas, Teresa Porras, explained that the event on
Calle Larios will take place at 6.30pm, 8pm and 9.30pm. The illuminations will be accompanied by songs Zodiaco and Fantasy by Rondo Veneziano, Villancico altozano by Cafe Quijano, and Cosas de la Navidad, children’s songs by Raul Charlo. Malaga will also play host to a Christmas tree in Plaza de la Constitucion, which visitors can walk under, and a novelty, light-changing tree will also be installed in Plaza de la Marina. After the lights have been switched on, La Manchabased band La Gafapasta will perform versions of Spanish pop and rock songs from the 1980’s.
The lights will switch on, on Friday at 7 pm, although from an hour before, a children’s show featuring Peneque el Valiente will be held in the Plaza de las Flores. Children will also receive 1,000 balloons inscribed with Christmas messages. Councillor Porras revealed this year ’s festive display will use 2,062,104 LED lights, while on Calle Larios, a dome using 2,630 micro LED lights with two domes, and 24 porticos with windows, as well as stained glass windows and cathedral-style

COMPANIONSHIP is what most dog or cat owners would say if asked what is the most important benefit of owning a pet. But r e se a r c h i n d i c a te s that pet ownership may provide another important benefit: improved health. One of the first studies demonstrating that pets could be beneficial to their owner ’s health wa s c o n d u c t ed in 1980 by Dr Aaron H Katcher and his associates. They found that among heart attack patients, 94 per cent of those who owned pets lived one year longer than 72 per cent of those who did not have a pet. Dr Alan M Beck, director of the Centre for Applied Ethology and Human-Ani-
mal Interaction, Purdue University, says that a closer analysis of the findings show that only a small proportion of the difference in mortality can be attributed to pet ownership. ‘Nevertheless, while 2-3 per cent may seem small, the impact, considering the frequency of heart disease, is significant and cost effective,’ Dr Beck and a colleague wrote recently in the Annual Review of Public Health. Another 1990’s study indicates that besides reducing the risk of heart disease, pets mig h t a ls o h e lp red u c e s o me min o r h ea lth p roblems. In this study, conducted by James Serpell at Cambridge University, UK, researchers began with people who did not own pets. The participants were asked to complete questionnaires about the frequency of minor health complaints
such as headaches, indigestion and problems sleeping. There were no major differences among the study participants based on their res pons e s to the he a lth questionnaire. The researchers then gave s ome of the pe ople dogs , some of the people cats, and left one group without pets. Te n months la te r, the re searchers looked again at the health of the men and women and found that the group with dogs had suffered fewer minor complaints. The re is a ls o e vide nc e that stroking a dog slows the heart beat and reduces blood pressure. Furthermore, it is a fact that dogs taken to homes for the elderly and hospices have had a beneficial effect. So your dog is not just a companion. It makes an important contribution to your health.

HE amount of non-Spanish people who bought properties in the country has grown by 5.6 per cent during the first half of 2018 compared to the same time last year. Industry figures showed there were a total of 53,359 sales made to foreign buyers during the first six months of this year. The figures are the highest since the first half of 2007, at the height of the pre-crash property boom, when around 33,000 homes were sold to foreigners. Sales to non-Spanish buyers accounted for almost 19 per cent of the total number of houses sold. The British were the single largest nationality out of all other foreigners who bought homes in Spain, making up 14.3 per cent of the total. The number of homes sold to British people numbered 7,613 in total, up by almost 9 per cent on the first six months of 2017.

The British were followed by the French who bought a total of 4,211 properties, 4.6 per cent less than the same time last year. The Germans came third with 4,138 homes, a fall of 2.1 per cent on last year’s figures. Purchases by Moroccans led to the largest year-on-year growth of any nationality. They bought almost 29 per cent more homes compared to the same time last year. They were followed by the Irish with almost 25 per cent and
the Danish with more than 18 per cent. The Valencia Region was the most popular region for foreign buyers purchasing Spanish homes. A total of 15,613 homes were sold to foreigners there, about one third of the Spanish total, with sales growing yearon-year by almost 17 per cent. The Valencia Region was followed by Andalucia with 9,737, a growth of more than 8 per cent, and Cataluña, with 7,570 sales and fall of 5.3 per cent.

No slowing down for the CCC of A!
HILST many clubs reduce their programme for the Christmas period the CCCA carries on unabated and, in fact, increases its programme of events in the lead up to the festive period. Before we come to what is happening in December, it is marvellous to report that the Club’s efforts to raise monies for the Marbella branch of the Royal British Legion on Armistice Day resulted in a great success for everyone. With backing from CLC World Resorts & Hotels, the company known to many as CLC World, this newspaper and the La Sala Group, a fabulous morning was enjoyed by a full turn-out for a brunch at La Sala Banus on the day. Songstress Laura Ellen had learned songs from both world wars and, dressed in a wartime RAF uniform, she kept everyone well entertained as an excellent breakfast was provided by La Sala. Considerable monies were raised and CLC World Resorts & Hotels boosted the total by around €2,000 with their generous contribution. A great day and a great result! The November Classic Car Run It’s always refreshing when a new member of the CCCA takes on the organisation of the monthly classic car run and lunch. November was no exception and CCCA member Claudia Langer took up the mantle and arranged a superb day out for everyone. These special events are a lot of work and something of a challenge for any two people so, to manage this all on her own was a terrific achievement. And, to make it such a success is even more of an impressive result! The event started from the La Cañada bar and Restaurante in

Torremolinos, an interesting place in itself, with its amazing display of motor cycles and motor scooters. Not just parked on show but many are mounted on the walls and ceilings of the Bar. Not only interesting but they produced a very good breakfast too! The route was also very interesting and enjoyable and set off through Cartama to Pizarra where a coffee stop was taken at the Museo del Arte there. Another most interesting stop with time to look at the museum, enjoy a coffee and tapas before heading off towards Casarabonela and a run over the beautiful mountains to head to El Burgo. Thoughtfully, a Cava stop was arranged by Claudia en route back towards Coin which was much appreciated by all! The day would finish at Miraflores Golf Club who provided a first-class lunch for all and even permitted a display of classic cars on the green next to their Restaurant. A super day out again for the Club and very ably organised by Claudia Langer. JEC Out Again The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club gets stronger each month and their Presidente, Philip Wray with his wife, Jenny, put on another very good event for their November run. Going further to the east, the event started just the other side of Malaga and headed into the Axarquia. Around 15 Jaguars of all ages
turned out to enjoy the sunshine and the amazing countryside and were rewarded with some fabulous drivers’ roads, some stunning scenery and, of course, amazing panoramic views of both mountains and sea. Coffee and Cava stops had been arranged and enjoyed by all and the finish lunch at TK’s Restaurant in Torrox Costa was firstclass. In fact, the lunch was particularly enjoyed by the Brits on the event as, even though it was a Saturday, a traditional ‘Sunday Roast’ with all the trimmings had been laid on. A choice of roast beef, lamb or chicken and salmon for the non meat-eaters went down very well indeed! CCCA Coming Events. As I mentioned earlier, the CCCA gets in to its stride, putting on three main events in the run-up to Christmas. On Tuesday, December 4 the Club has a dinner at Treetops Restaurante in El Chaparral Golf Club. Always an excellent evening, in addition to the usual fun there will be Canapés served on arrival and the fabulous Karen Cooper will be entertaining members as they enjoy fine, traditional Christmas fayre. The following Saturday, December 8, sees the Club’s regular monthly classic car run and lunch but with a Christmas flavour! There will be a competition for the best dressed Christ-
