Rain hammers coast
AFTERMATH: The force of the water left Garrucha’s beaches a mess. THE Costa Almeria took a real hammering from heavy rains last weekend. Torrential downpours along the coast caused localised flooding and problems on roads. Garrucha was one of the areas particularly hard hit. As much as 40 litres of water teemed down in just half an hour on Friday morning, turning the weekly market into a scene of chaos as manholes overflowed and the streets became fastflowing streams. An amateur video showed the force of the water wrecking
ALMERIA City Council is organising a run for people and pets which will raise money for animal protection societies. Announcing details of the City of Almeria, San Perrestre 2018 run this week, City Promotion Councillor Carolina Lafita said the funds raised from the event would be destined for anim a l p r o t e c t i o n o rg a n i s a tions which collaborate with the Municipal Animal Health Care Centre. The councillor also said there would be a party atmosphere, with a fun run with dogs in tow, a fancy dress competition and various exhibitions. In addition there will be a number of
several stalls and sweeping crates of fruit and vegetables through the streets and down to the sea. The emergency services were called out to around 15 incidents of inundated business premises and basements in Garrucha, Mojacar and Los Gallardos. The exceptional rainfall also affected Garrucha’s schools, children’s playgrounds, a number of municipal buildings, roads and the church. Garrucha mayor Maria Lopez stressed that most of the water drained rapidly in-
to the sea, and the town was cleaned up and back to normal fairly quickly. But the massive storms left the area’s beaches a mess. The channels of water gouged out furrows on the sand, walkways and showers were damaged, pipes were left exposed where the heavy seas washed away the sand completely, and signposts came down. Maria Lopez said the council would evaluate the damage, not ruling out the possibility of requesting financial assistance from the regional government.

Picking time THE olive picking season in Almeria is underway, somewhat later than usual due to unusual weather this year, but with excellent quality fruit, the ASAJA Almeria Association of Farmers and Stockbreeders reported.

Drug clan busted A GUARDIA CIVIL operation led to the break-up of a drug sales set-up overseen by the same family clan. Operation ‘GreensBlacks’ was launched when back in May the Guardia became aware of the kind of activities associated with the family in the Barrio Villegas area of Las Norias de Daza
in El Ejido. Officers carried out discreet surveillance of the family’s two homes in the zone over a number of months, during which time they observed suspicious behaviour and it became clear drugs were being sold from the properties. At the beginning of November the Guardia carried
out searches of the two properties, finding air guns and detonators, small amounts of hashish and nearly €11,000 in cash, as well as various implements used for measuring out drug doses. Five members of the family were arrested, ranging in age from 18 to 43 years old.
GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 37-year old man suspected of violently mugging an elderly woman in Roquetas de Mar. The Guardia began investigations several months back after the 68-year-old woman reported the incident. She said she had been followed by a man after taking money out of a bank, and when she arrived at the door to her home, after looking around to make sure there were no witnesses, he approached her. The victim got into a struggle with the attacker, who pushed her to the floor. He then snatched an envelope containing €950 from her bag and made off. The Guardia managed to piece together a detailed description of the likely attacker and what he had been wearing after speaking to bank personnel and nearby businesses, as well as to identify the number of the mobile phone he had been carrying. Last Friday officers on patrol in La Mojonera spotted an individual who matched the physical description and who was wearing a sweatshirt which looked the same as the one the mugger had been wearing. When they stopped the individual it also turned out he was carrying the same telephone. The Guardia identified the arrested man as a 37-yearold living in Roquetas de Mar.

MARITIME rescue were called out to assist a boat which ran into trouble in the Bay of Almeria in the early hours of last Sunday morning, towing it to Aguadulce marina. The leisure craft’s motor broke down when the anchor chain got tangled up in the propeller.

Fame star ACTOR Luis Tosar was awarded the Almeria International Film Festival ‘Almeria, Land of Cinema’ award and was given a star on the provincial capital’s Walk of Fame. Tosar is one of Spain’s best known actors and has won three Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of an Oscar.

THIS desert in southern Spain is one of two areas in the country to make the shortlist for a Europewide award for the continent’s best film location. The Tabernas Desert in Almeria Province, Andalucia is one of 12 locations shortlisted for the European Film Location Award put on b y th e E u ro p ea n Film C ommis sions Network (EUFCN). Tenerife’s Teide National Park has also been shortlisted.
The EUFCN said qualifying locations had to have been the location for a film a TV series shot in 2017. Rambla rescue FIREFIGHTERS had to rescue a man and woman last Sunday night when they found themselves trapped by flooding where two usually dry river beds meet in Carboneras. The 60-year-old woman and her 35-year-old son had gone to check on their animals in the Cueva del Pajaro area. When the son crossed one of the river beds a sudden torrent of water dragged the vehicle, and he was unable to get out.
He alerted his mother, but she was unable to reach him, and found herself stuck around 200 metres in the other river bed. Firefighters rescued the man first as he was in the most difficult situation and then his mother. Sunday’s torrential downpours also caused problems on the AL7107 in Vera. The road had to be closed for several hours until it could be cleaned up and accumulated debris removed.

Cruise liners in port THE Norwegian Spirit cruise liner docked in Almeria for the first time on Sunday. Almeria Port Authority President Mari Carmen Ortiz made a courtesy visit to the ship captain Peter Engwall, wishing both him and the passengers and crew on board an enjoyable visit. The cruise ship arrived at 8am from Malaga. It has capacity for nearly 3,000 people, and boasts 14 restaurants, 12 lounges and bars, a casino, a spa and gymnasium, among other facilities.

Two hours after the Norwegian Spirit docked, the Marina cruise liner entered port, having sailed from Valencia. The Oceania Cruises ship, which has capacity for 2,000 passenger and crew, last visited Almeria in December last year. Many of the passengers from both ships took the opportunity to take excursions, options including a visit to the Cabo de Gata National Park, the greenhouses of El Ejido and the Alpujarra mountains.

950 179 048 OPPORTUNITY: Huercal-Overa Mayor Domingo Fernandez said the project will help job seekers gain qualifications and find employment.
Green qualifications PLANS are underway for a project to train unemployed people in Huercal-Overa and Puerto Lumbreras in the environmentally friendly management of green spaces and natural areas. The local councils of both municipalities have started procedures for putting into action the Eco Green project, which comes under the Empleaverde programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund. The aim is to equip 302 job seekers with skills and qualifications in the efficient and sustainable management of areas destined for use in agriculture or tourism, while at the same time tackling land erosion and water shortages. The project will run for 12 months and there are expected to be 12 different courses
in Huercal-Overa and Puerto Lumbreras. The courses will be related to subjects like the ecological cultivation of citrus fruit, using drones for the environmentally efficient use of land and water, sustainable landscaping, the use of information technology in eco-efficiency, precision agriculture and the internet, hydro efficiency, and land recovery. “This project will assist in the creation of employment and obtaining qualifications among people who have the greatest difficulties in accessing the labour market through the environment, which is a clear business opportunity capable of generating employment and wealth, at the same time preserving our natural heritage and biodiversity,” commented Huercal-Overa mayor Domingo Fernandez.
The mayor said creating employment was one of the council’s priorities, and that the Empleaverde programme would help a large number of people to “improve their possibilities of obtaining work with new training in economic sectors linked to the environment.” He described the programme content as ‘innovative,’ and the first time ‘training actions in these new green qualifications adapted to the real needs of land in this area have been carried out.’ The total budget for the project is just over €205,000, the European Social Fund contributing nearly €165,000. It is also subsidised with support from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Biodiversity Foundation.

AlmeriaSevilla flying high THE air service between Almeria and Sevilla is becoming an increasingly popular way of travelling between the provincial capital and the Andalucian capital. According to the regional government’s Development and Housing department, 27,300 passengers used the AlmeriaSevilla service between the beginning of January and the end of September, representing about 70 per cent of full capacity. This was an increase of 12.9 per cent on the same nine-month period of last year. The flight, currently operated by Iberia’s regional airline Air Nostrum, has been classified as a Public Service Obligation since 2009, and is therefore the financial responsibility of the Junta de Andalucia. This classification also means there are a number of conditions the service must comply with, including that it must be a regular and continuous service with arrival and departure times which allow for good connectivity between the two cities.

SEVILLIAN flamenco dancer Manuela Carrasco received the City of Vera International Flamenco Award at a gala event last Friday night. Speaking at the presentation at the Vera Town Theatre Auditorium, Vera mayor Felix Lopez said the award was a recognition of the dancer and choreographer as a leading figure and artist, and for her important contribution to flamenco as an internationally recognised gypsy woman. Andalucia School of Flamenco President explained the international flamenco awards went to ‘grand figures for their professional and artistic career and for their work in the universalisation of this art declared by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010.’ Manuela Carrasco has been dancing flamenco since she was a child and is largely self-taught. The daughter of dancer Jose Carrasco ‘El Sordo’ (The Deaf One), she made her public debut at age 11 in Sevilla and at 13 toured the country with Curro Velez. In a career spanning more than 50 years she had per-

City of Vera International Flamenco Prizes Gala was organized by Vera Council in collaboration with the Andalucia School of Flamenco to mark the International Day of Flamenco. This year ’s event also had the support of the Secretary of State for the national Ministry of Overseas Affairs and Cooperation Ministry Global Spain, the Spanish government seeing the initiative as part of a strategy to promote flamenco abroad as part of the national culture. The gala featured a performance by young Granada artist Cristina Aguilera and invited artist, dancer ‘Juan de Juan.’
NINE municipalities in Almeria will benefit from regional funding for weather-damaged roads. The Andalucia regional government has approved extraordinary financing for emergency works and repairs on access roads to agricultural areas which have been affected by adverse weather, natural disasters and catastrophes in the last three months in 107 municipalities, among them Chirivel, Cuevas del Almanzora, Lijar, Maria, Oria, Pechina, Velez Blanco, Velez Rubio and Vera. Junta de Andalucia Agriculture, Fishing and Rural Development minister Rodrigo Sanchez Haro met recently with the mayors of the affected
Almerian municipalities for talks on a plan of action. “Our priority at this time is to make it possible for the necessary repair works to be carried out in order for there to be a return to normal activity as soon as possible,” the minister commented. He said a letter had been sent to all the municipalities concerned so they can indicate precisely the number of roads and on what stretches they have been affected, saying, “From this point an immediate plan of action will be drawn up which will be taken to the Government Council in order that immediately after works start.”

Friends of the railway
EXTRA: The ASAFAL Friends of the Railway Association hopes to add additional exhibits to its museum. ALMERIA City Council has given the ASAFAL Friends of the Railway Association the use of two additional premises so the organisation’s museum can be extended. The move gives the association an extra 133sqm in the La Pipa area of the city; ASAFAL is based in an adjacent 165sqm premises, which the city council ceded to the association through the Almeria XXI Municipal Company in 2015. The existing ASAFAL base houses a library, document archives, a model railway workshop and model railways, as well as the museum.
With the extra space there are plans to add more exhibits, including an area with a station workshop, signals, and documents on railway lines and works dating back to the last century. The association also said it hoped the museum would be used for exhibitions and for visits from school and local clubs. Almeria XXI council delegate Miguel Angel Castellon said this new cession showed the council supports ASAFAL’s work and activities ‘to defend and develop the culture and history of the railway.’
Winter ready THE provincial Winter Road Management Plan is ready to address any incidents on the 826 kilometres of roads managed by the Andalucia regional government, Public Works and Housing delegate Juan Sola has affirmed. Unveiling the plan during last week during a visit to the Comprehensive Maintenance Centre in Fiñana, Sola said there are 84 professionals, 31 machines and vehicles, including seven snow ploughs, and nearly 900 tonnes of salt at the ready. The delegate said the aim is to “provide the available human and material resources for road maintenance works, especially in situations of adverse meteorological phenomena,” no-
tably the arrival of the first snows. He explained his department’s Comprehensive Maintenance centres in Almeria acted in coordination with the traffic arm of the Guardia Civil and the 112 Emergency Services “to register the least number of incidents in the event of bad weather and to restore the affected roads to normality as soon as possible.” The provincial roads where there is considered to be the greatest risk of snow and ice are: The A-317 in Los Velez y Maria, the A-327 from Huercal-Overa to Velez Rubio, the A-334 from Olula del Rio to Alcontar, the A348 from Canjayar, to
Cherin, the A-349 in Tahal and Macael, the A-391 in El Marchal, the A-399 in Partaloa, Oria and Chirivel, the A-92 in Abla and Fiñana, the A-92N in Velez Rubio, Chirivel and El Contador, the A-1100 in Uleila del Campo and Cobdar, the A-1176 in Fiñana and the A-1178 from Seron to Gergal. There are four Comprehensive Maintenance centres in Almeria, one in Chirivel to cover 206 kilometres of road in the northern part of the province, one in Vera for 215 kilometres of road in the east, one in Fiñana for the 228 kilometres of the central area, and one Huecija for 222 kilometres in the south.

Road update MODIFICATIONS to the plans for doubling the width of the road connecting Vera and Garrucha should soon be completed, according to the Andalucia regional government’s Public Works and Housing councillor Felipe Lopez. The councillor met the mayors of Garrucha and Vera, reporting the ₏14.7 million works to make the road from Las Buganvillas roundabout to just before the Avent hotel a dual-carriageway are now about 55 per cent completed.

Hugh Elliott – British Ambassador Designate By John Smith THE recent announcement of the appointment of a new British Ambassador to Spain (and Andorra) came as no great surprise as it is generally British government policy to limit the length of service in any position to four or five years. In the early 20th century, it was normal to either appoint Ambassadors and Governors for political reasons or to take career civil servants who had worked their way up in Foreign Office service until they reached the highest office possible. The Ambassador Designate, Hugh Elliott, attended Cambridge University from 1984 to 1988 where he studied Modern and Medieval Languages, Spanish and French and when he graduated he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as an Assistant Desk Officer in the East Africa Department. His career followed the usual pattern of promotions and overseas postings, but he eventually left the civil service and took the position of Global Head of Government Relations for mining company Anglo American plc in 2006 and remained there

Now proficient in five languages, English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, he returned to the Foreign Office in 2013 as Director of Communications and then from 2017 to 2018, he held three different positions in the FCO, recently joining the Department for Exiting the European Union in September 2018 as Director of Communications. having spent almost a year involved in Brexit, by the time that he moves to Madrid in the summer of next year, he would appear to be the ideal candidate for the position as he knows how to move in both diplomatic and commercial circles. Nothing is known of his personal view on the Brexit Referendum vote and in his role, he will continue to express government opinion rather than his own. The residence of the British Ambassador in Madrid is a
large attractive building with a good size garden and a small swimming pool which will no doubt be welcomed by his wife Maria Antonia and their two children. Simon Manley and Hugh Elliott have known each other in the past and the Foreign Office building in King Charles Street, London is not so large that senior civil servants don’t come across each other on a regular basis. When the appointment was announced, Ambassador Manley tweeted ‘Hugh Elliot is a great friend and colleague who will be a great ambassador for our country.’ The response tweet from the Ambassador Designate was equally effusive thanking Simon Manley for his good wishes and saying ‘It will be a pleasure to represent Britain in Spain and when I take over next summer.’ British expatriates in Spain will rely on briefings from the current Ambassador and his staff in the lead up to the ‘divorce’ which may be hard, soft or without a deal and then for guidance from the new Ambassador who will be arriving as the Chinese proverb says ‘in interesting times.’

Ticket ‘dig’ at Spain A PICTURE has emerged online of a Calatan hospital parking ticket which appears to describe Spain as an ‘exploiting country.’ Social media users spoke out about the ticket which one driver claimed to have received after being billed for parking at Barcelona’s Sant Joan de Deu de Manresa Hospital. The ticket holder highlighted the address section of
the document which said the hospital was in the ‘exploiter country’ (Pais Explotador in Spanish). The hospital said the use of the term on the ticket was down to human error. Blitz, a Twitter user, posted: ‘This is unbearable and the government does nothing.’ ‘The stupidity of the separatists has no limit,’ Mi otro yo, another Twitter user, said.
A spokesperson for Sant Joan de Deu hospital said the error was caused by someone forgetting to fill in the ‘country’ field on its car park ticket machines’ database. Pais Explotador used in this context can also mean ‘operating country.’ The hospital said ‘Pais Explotador’was the default text in that field and would appear if left blank.

Kirsty died in ‘suspicious circumstances’ THE father of Kirsty Maxwell, who tragically lost her life in ‘suspicious’ circumstances following a fall from an apartment balcony in Spain has again hit out at ‘journalistic selective speculation.’ The Kirsty Maxwell Information Appeal said: “As a result of more media selective speculation regarding significant witnesses appearing in private at Benidorm Court, Spain Kirsty’s dad Brian released this statement.” The statement is thought to focus on UK national papers. Brian’s statement reads: “It’s been a very difficult few weeks for our family, encouraged by our knowledge that progress regarding confidential court led investigations into Kirsty’s death continues and the disappointment of having to read journalistic selective speculation about what is alleged to have been happening in private behind the closed doors of Benidorm Court. “Once again I reiterate that at this time we as a family and our Spanish lawyer are not prepared to comment on upsetting speculation or alleged extracts of testimonies of witnesses who have appeared at court or theories which continue to feature.

It is known Kirsty had been with friends before she apparently left them for a different hotel room occupied by five men she did not know. Joseph Graham, Callum Northridge, Ricky Gammon, Anthony Holehouse and Daniel Bailey were part of a group of 50 men on holiday together at the time of Mrs Maxwell’s death. The men, all from Notting-
ham, have given statements to Spanish police, but Mrs Maxwell’s family claim they ‘can’t grieve’ because they say the men’s stories do not add up. Don’t be shy - give food! By Dilip Kuner THE call has gone out to expats to not be shy and join in one of Spain’s biggest annual food bank charity events.
Jenny Dodd, who lives in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, had the idea that foreigners should help with food donations for the annual Gran Recogida (Big Collection) after she saw a
report on Spanish TV. Jenny explained: “I am trying to bridge the gap between British people and the Spanish.” During the event volunteers usually dressed in a bib - hand out plastic bags in supermarkets, with the idea being for people to buy something extra to donate to the food banks of Spain. Jenny explained: “It can be anything you can afford - a bag of rice or a can of food.” She added: “The problem is I think a lot of expats don’t know what is happening and as many don’t speak Spanish they get a bit uncomfortable.” She said: “But I know British people are very generous when it comes to charity and if they know what it is all about I am sure they would be all too willing to help” The Gran Recogida is a major event that happens each year. This year it runs from November 30 to December 1 and there will be many volunteerrun collections in supermarkets across Spain.

Quakes recorded SPAIN’S National Geographic Institute recorded two earthquakes measuring 4.3 and 3.8 on the Richter Scale at the weekend. The Instituto Geográfico Nacional registered a magnitude 4.3 quake at a depth of 50km in the Azores - Cabo de San Vicente area in the seas off the south-west coast of the Iberian
peninsula at 12.45am this morning. It followed a 3.8 magnitude quake, at a depth of 12km, which shook the area south-east of Melgaco near the border between Portugal and Spain on Saturday evening at 8.55pm local time. There were no reports of any injuries or damage to property.

Move doubts THE head of Spain’s financial regulator has said the amount of companies relocating to the country following Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) is not likely to be ‘spectacular.’ Sebastian Albella, head of the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), said fallout from last year’s Catalan independence push continued to put some firms off moving to Spain. There has not been the same level of coordination between the Spanish government and private firms as there has been in other EU member states, Albella added. “We could have done a lot more when we were in a position to do so. It is a pity we have not worked harder,” Albella said. The ‘big winners’ for company relocation were likely to be Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Ireland, he added. Albella’s comments come as stock market figures show firms in Spain’s IBEX 35, the index of the country’s largest companies, have been hit by Brexit uncertainty. The value of Santander, Telefonica, Ferrovial, IAG and Sabadell, the IBEX companies most exposed to Brexit due to their British operations, have all fallen since the start of this year. The tourism IT provider Amadeus is the only leading firm whose value rose, increasing by 11 per cent this year.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN has emerged as the latest threat to the British Prime Minister’s European Union (EU) Withdrawal Agreement as she begins the task of marshalling support for the deal at home. EU member states have closed ranks since a draft agreement was reached, but Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez threatened to sink the deal over Gibraltar. “As things stand today if there are no changes regarding Gibraltar, Spain will vote no on Brexit,” Sanchez said. Spain’s Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has asked the EU to clarify provisions for Gibraltar in the deal. Madrid reportedly wants to continue talks over the British enclave’s future, which Spain claims sovereignty over, between the two countries rather than at an EU level. The threat comes as Prime Minister Theresa May struggled to sell her draft agreement to sceptical Brexit hard-liners in her own party and Parliament as a whole.

By Joe Gerrard POLITICIANS across Spain jumped on comments from a senior official this week in which he let slip that the date of the next general election may be brought forward. Jose Luis Abalos, the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) Organisational Secretary, said the party had not ruled out holding a ‘Super Sunday’ on May 26. The move would see municipal, regional, national and European elections held on the same day. Speaking during a visit to the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Monday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez did not confirm or deny early election speculation when pressed. He said Abalos had made a ‘common sense’ suggestion and added it was within the Prime Minister’s powers to decide when an election would be held. Sanchez’s comments mark a change in tone and are significant because he has repeatedly and explicitly ruled out bringing elections forward from their current date. A national vote has to be held no later than Sunday July 26, 2020.

Pablo Enchenique, the leftist Podemos’ Organisational Secretary, said the party’s
governing body would meet tomorrow (Friday) to decide on a course of action. Sanchez’s decision this week not to rule out a ballot could be interpreted as a realisation that the ruling PSOE’s position in Parliament leaves it with little room for manoeuvre. Its casual relationship with the small regionalist parties who banded together with the PSOE to oust Mariano Rajoy’s PP government in June has not survived into the autumn. Some have ruled out backing the PSOE’s budget for next year.
AN overseas visit by the Prime Minister last week led the leader of Spain’s conservative opposition party to muse on the country’s colonial past. Pablo Casado, leader of the Partido Popular (PP), said last Saturday that Spain had not sought to colonise its former imperial possessions. His comments came as Pedro Sanchez and King Felipe travelled to Guatemala for the 12th Ibero-American Business Meeting in Antigua. “We did not colonise, what we did was to have a bigger Spain,” Casado said. He added many countries in Latin America, which were colonised by Spain from the 16th century onwards, had good relations with the ‘mother country.’ The comments expose the difficulty Spain shares with other former imperial powers in Europe over confronting their colonial legacy. Sanchez will have been keen to present Spain as a state among equals while meeting with his Latin American counterparts. A trip to Morocco this week, another former Spanish colony, had much the same tone. Casado’s comments reveal a tendency for those on the right particularly to dwell on an empire long-since consigned to history. The positive news comes months after the popular resort was predicted to endure a bad season ahead, amid claims the number of British tourists was on the decline. TIPPING POINT: The school bus was trapped near Cartagena. EMERGENCY services were called out to Cartagena to rescue schoolchildren from a bus that was left hanging over a roadside last Monday during storms across the Costa Blanca. The 112 emergency services line received a total of 420 call outs due to heavy rains and floods from last Sunday to Monday in the Murcia region alone. More than 40 road traffic personnel and 15 machines were deployed to nine roads across the region after they were closed due to flooding. Eight were reopened by Monday morning. Schools in Torrevieja were forced to shut after around 100 litres per square metre of rain fell on the town from Sunday night to Monday morning. More than 136,000 children across 88 Valencia region towns and cities were affected, according to reports.
The defendant had protested to her teacher before then arguing and making inappropriate comments towards her. Prosecutors said the defendant then assaulted her. Emergency ser vices personnel had to be called in to treat the t e a c h e r ’s i n j u r i e s , t h e c o u r t heard. The teacher brought the case to court with the help of the Workers’ Commission (CCOO) union, of which she is a member. Felix Martin, secretary gener-

Bar fire POLICE are investigating after a suspect reportedly started a fire intentionally in a bar in
Velez-Malaga. Officers from the Local Police are searching for a perpetrator after a fire broke out at around 3am last Saturday at the San Francisco Bar on Calle San Francisco. Velez-Malaga Council confirmed no one had been hurt in the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the bar. One resident was asked to leave a home above the bar as a precaution. According to one witness, the fire could have been started
SECURITY guard Rafael Pantoja has been charged on suspicion of murder after his expartner was stabbed to death at a shopping complex in Palma. Sacramento Roca Martinez, 36, died last Friday afternoon after being stabbed four times in the chest at the Conforama shopping complex on Calle Aragon in Palma. One of the wounds is believed to have gone straight through her heart. Ambulances and paramedics were quickly on the scene, but the mother-of-two was pronounced dead 15 minutes later. Pantoja was reportedly chased and stopped by a group of people who included an off-duty Llucmajor police officer and a fellow security guard. What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. Food firms merger set TWO Spanish business to business food suppliers have unveiled plans to merge into a single company. Siro and Cerealto, whose customers include the supermarket chain Mercadona, said they will now become the Cerealto Siro Foods group. The firm is set to supply cereal products to retailers. The new company will have turned over an estimated €600 million by the end of this year. Its output is estimated to be more than 400,000 tons across 17 factories.

Car maker profit high
‘High beam’ economics SPAIN’S Prime Minister has called for a ‘high beam’ economic policy that takes into account future generations while on a visit to Central America. Pedro Sanchez, who was speaking at the 12th annual Ibero-American Business Meeting in the city of Antigua in Guatemala, said long-term economic planning should also take the environment into account. The meeting comes as part of the 26th Ibero-American summit, an annual gathering of the heads of government from the world’s Spanish and Portuguesespeaking countries.

Sanchez also highlighted his government’s commitment to gender equality. Rebeca Grynspan, the General Secretary of the Organisation of Ibero-American states, praised Sanchez for his appoint-
ment of a female-majority cabinet, among other measures. Sanchez said he was pushing to open a debate in Europe about gender equality in the business world. Several European countries have set targets of ensuring company boards are 30 per cent female by the early 2020’s. “Gender equality is of vital importance. We cannot squander the talent of 50 per cent of our societies,” he said. It comes as Spain’s ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) has unveiled measures to equalise maternity and paternity leave among other plans.

The company said the increase was driven by higher sales of more expensive cars and better equipped models. Revenues also rose during the same period by 6.7 per cent to more than €7.7 billion, up from about €7.2 billion. The turnover was the highest in the firm’s history.

Holiday hiring A TOTAL of 1,034,000 people are set to be hired for temporary Christmas work across Spain this holiday season, an increase of 4.5 per cent on 2017 according to the Adecco human resources firm.
RECORD LEVELS: The Bank of Spain building in Madrid. SPANISH government debt rose by almost €12 billion in September to around €1.18 trillion, a record high according to data from the country’s central bank. The Bank of Spain said the national debt was now equivalent to 98 per cent of Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP). The September increase means that Spain’s debt has risen month-on-month twice consecutively. The €1.2 trillion figure also tops the previous record of €1.16 trillion
set in June. Public debt grew by €41.5 billion, or 3.6 per cent, from September 2017 to the same month this year according to the Bank of Spain’s data. Central bank officials said the growing debts of Spain’s autonomous regions partly drove the increase. Their debt burdens grew by 2.3 per cent last September compared to the same month in 2017 and now stands at more than €291 million. Welfare spending increases also contributed to the increase, the Bank of Spain said.

Labour ministry figures show a combination of low wages and reliance on temporary contracts is keeping nearly one in six workers stuck below the poverty line. Spain also has the European Union’s highest pro-
portion of workers at risk of poverty 13.1 per cent, after Greece and Romania. The country’s economic downturn sparked a ‘freeze on wages.’ Salaries did not recover when the economy returned to growth because unemployment has remained high. The jobless rate is the second-highest in the eurozone after Greece despite falling from a peak of nearly 27 per cent in 2013 to 14.5 per cent in September.

Tall stories that just aren’t true LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT JUST when you think you’d heard it all… this week’s blurb comes to you all the way from sunny Fulham SW6. It is a beautiful autumn day, the leaves are piling up in a multitude of magnificent hues and the sun is beaming down from a pale blue cloudless sky. Unfortunately the ol’ boy is writing this from his sick bed. I’m just laying here with a temperature, feeling like death, listening to the vaguely muffled voices of people, wafting up from the street as they go about their Sunday rituals. The fact that I’ve heard not one word of English so far is not going to influence this week’s piece one tiny bit, promise! No, what I have done of course, is tune in to the EWN online. As ya do. And (sigh) I really do feel it’s once again time to set the record straight. Last week, word reached me on Mallorca (from the council offices no less) that they were under the impression I had served a prison sentence for murdering my first wife! The same week, a close friend confided in another, that they had always been under the impression I had indeed committed murder and done time for it. Well I can categorically inform all concerned that, although I did serve time for an affray in a

These tall stories are usually embellished by the narrators to make as much impact as possible on the listener and are, to my way of think-
ing, fairly harmless and don’t bother the ol’ boy one iota. Not in the same category however was the missive printed on last week’s letters page. It is plainly libellous and I should have certainly been given the opportunity to ask for proof of the insinuations. The letter stated that in a past
column Leapy wrote. ‘In my opinion the victims of the Grenfell Tower block disaster would have rather died than be woken up at that ungodly hour.’ Well I can quite categorically inform all involved that I would never even consider writing something as evil and inappropriate as a remark like that. The only way that would have ever even possibly got into the column, would have been as an example of my disgust at people who could make such distasteful jokes in the wake of such tragedy; and even then I am pretty certain I would have found it too abhorrent to include in my piece. Sometimes these rumours can be taken just that little bit too far and this accusation has done just that. Unless it can be proved and the column in question produced I demand an immediate apology from the writer or Leapy’s wrath will be invoked beyond peril. Just to put minds at rest that they may have been have been hobnobbing with a murderer, I’m really looking forward to spending Christmas with my Irish family, which of course also includes my first wife. An exception will now be made for those otherwise up to standard in the remaining subjects, which is as good a way as any of ensuring that a Baccalaureate qualification will soon be worthless. Education minister Isabel Celaa justified this as “obeying all logic” since nobody should ever be “stigmatised,” she said. “The worst punishment a person can have is to lose self-esteem,” Celaa maintained with motherly concern. Prizes for all? Life doesn’t work that way, and nor should academic qualifications.

The dead horse THE Partido Popular in Cataluña is hoping to put an end to its current irrelevance by naming Alejandro Fernandez president of the regional party. PP irrelevance inside Cataluña began long before the independence Proces gained momentum. Matters did not improve inside Cataluña during the 2011-2018 Partido Popular governments owing to Mariano Rajoy’s refusal to deal with the Proces as anything but a legal, and not a political, issue. That led to an illegal referendum followed by the ineffectual UDI of October 27 which in turn led to the application of the Constitution’s Article 155 which put the Catalan autonomy on hold. Trying to reverse Catalan hostility and antipathy to the PP will take more than a new regional president and is an exercise in what is known as flogging a dead horse.

TWO weeks ago I sent in my piece to EWN (appearing here last week) about the 30-year-old refugee acting as a 15-yearold schoolboy, asking (jokily) why shouldn’t anyone choose whatever age they want? So, imagine my surprise reading the very next day about Emile Ratelband who’s trying to change his legal birth date from 1949 to 1969 (so he can, crucially, get more action on Tinder!). But now, apparently, you can be whatever you say you are. Take Tony McGinn who, wearing his dog outfit, identifies as ‘Tony Bark.’ He is transgender, of course (and maybe also trans-species). And then there’s the theatre director Anthony Ekundayo Lennon who, for funding purposes, identifies as black although, as he admits, he’s not. Plus Rachel McKinnon, a man who became a woman at the age of 29 and currently winning women’s cycling races across North America. Have both common sense and basic truth truly gone out of the window? Thin-Ply Technology Carbon Fibre (TPT) the material is comprised of countless ultra-thin carbon layers just 30 microns thick, each positioned at a 45 degree angle. The surface is delicately milled to expose a stratified shimmering construction that resembles flowing water. This material can be integrated into areas of the Speedtail such as the overhead control panel, gearshift paddles and steering wheel clasp. Happy long term ‘touristas’ with cars, guitars, horses, houses and internet TV. Although technically illegal, generally they do no harm, they are givers not takers. Many ‘illegals’ but not all are UK pensioners or Brits enjoying early retirement, contributing to the local economy with their weekly shop, buying coffees and meals in restaurants. Some have private medical, others wing it on their EHIC but according to the rules for Spanish residency they are not legally resident. They do this by bending the EU freedom of movement regulations, just wave your British passport use the EU/EEA citizens line at the airport and no one checks. However if Brexit comes to pass this could all change. Potentially it will be just like it is for visiting Australians or

Canadians and some other non EU/EEA citizens. No more easy EU/EEA line at the airport, but a nice entry stamp in your non EU British passport. Basically such dated stamps allows the bearer entry into the EU Schengen zone for a period of 90 days in any 180 days period. Similar to visiting the USA, by day 91 you’re expected to be out. That is out of the entire Schengen zone not just Spain. Holiday over and no return until
the ‘90 days in any 180 days period’ is over. Schengen visas are rarely extended and overstay often punished. Although reportedly less so in southern Europe than in the north. Similar rules reinforced by the E u r o p e a n Tr a v e l I n f o r m a t i o n and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in 2021 could soon apply to the British and as EU freedom of movement and the corresponding restrictions are usually EU wide this would logically
cover the entire Schengen area from Portugal to Finland. So no border runs to Portugal or Gibraltar to get your passport stamped and return to ‘su casita’ the next day. Of course if you’re retired you could go to the UK or Morocco for three months and then return here for 90 days and then go back to the UK etc. Shifts, three months in - three months out but let’s face it, your pot plants are going to look pretty sad, your
pool will probably turn green but not from envy and your relatives might get a tad fed up with your new nomadic arrangements. Hedging your bets, regardless of the outcome from the events that started in June 2016, retired or otherwise if you like it here but you’re living “‘under the radar,’ high time to be sorting out your residency papers, documenting your EU rights and getting your EU feet under the EU table while you still can.

BEING a British member of the European Union has just saved my life. But how can that be? How can being British and still within the EU be a life saver? Please let me explain. I am writing this from a hospital bed in the Inmaculada facility in Huercal-Overa (Almeria) I am a retired British expat living in Spain and I have just had the misfortune to suffer a heart attack. My life was saved by an amazing piece of cutting-edge medical technology at the nearby Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria operated by a young female surgeon of outstanding ability and expertise. Human hearts have three main arteries. In my case, there were blockages in all three. In the past, open heart surgery would have been the only option. My 21st century procedure, here in Spain, was rather different and much less risky. If Britain had already crashed out of the EU without a deal, then you would not be reading this because I’d be dead. Without the reciprocal health agreements between Britain and Spain as fellow EU members, there would be no free medical treatment for British pensioners living in Spain. The only alternative would be expensive private health care or people would have to move back to Britain and fall on the mercy of the already overstretched NHS and ultimately social services. So to all the squabbling politicians and hard-line Brexiteers I issue this truly heartfelt (pun intended) appeal. Give us a second referendum now we are no longer so ignorant of the facts. If you care about the well-being of your own citizens instead of your political career ambitions, be fully democratic and let us make a more informed decision NOW! It may be a matter of life and death. Brian Eagleson

AS a regular reader of your great newspaper, I was disgusted to read in your issue, dated 11-17 October, the article Castle fit for a King. In it they advertise extensive grounds and the shooting of wood pigeons, turtle doves and thrushes. Wood pigeons are a pest to farmers and are large enough to be eaten. What do ‘sportmen’ shoot beautiful turtle doves and thrushes for, ‘sport’? These two birds are rightly protected in the UK. Turtle dove numbers are down by about 90 per cent, they migrate to Africa and face many dangers on the way, including it seems in Estepona. I hope that you can find space for this, carry on the good work. J R Frensham

THE family of a British woman who died in suspicious circumstances in Benidorm have issued a statement which raises important points about the way journalists should cover such stories. Brian Maxwell, the father of 27-year-old Kirsty, said in the statement reporters had being too speculative about the case. Ms Maxwell fell from a hotel balcony and investigations into her death are still ongoing. The press has been rife with speculation into how the 27year-old may have died. On several occasions reports have been published based on statements and allegations not investigated or discussed in court. The freedom of the press to report what it believes the public ought to know is a key part of any free and democratic society. But when journalists wade into speculation, rumours and half-truths and publish them as though they were fact, they have strayed far from what their purpose should be. Journalists should report the news as they know it and their job is to ensure the public is informed with the best and most reliable information available. If reporters morph into judge, jury and jailer on matters where details are unknown or unclear then that is taking liberties with the truth. Ms Maxwell’s story may sell plenty of newspapers but behind the reports there is a family still grieving and seeking closure for the loss of their child.

Rambo in Madrid HOLLYWOOD superstar Sylvester Stallone emerged from his trailer wielding his character’s new ‘heart stopper’ knife in Madrid last Friday, during filming on the Spanish set of Rambo 5. The three-time Oscar nominee, 72, has resumed his role as troubled Vietnam War veteran John Rambo and co-wrote the screenplay for the fifth and final film of the violent franchise, which will be screened in autumn 2019. TECH FOR THE TIMID SMALL is beautiful says the 70’s slogan - though the anatomical enhancement offers appearing daily in my Inbox definitely suggest otherwise. Although Microsoft is no longer the world’s richest tech company (Apple has €250 billion in the piggy-bank it simply can’t spend), hundreds of millions of people worldwide still pay for the monster Microsoft Office suite. Yet we’re awash in free software, and in 2018 much of it is now as good as the stuff you buy. Take the latest FreeOffice which many reviewers say matches its bloated Microsoft rival. Entirely compatible with MS Office formats, at just 400 MB it weighs in at a mere fraction of the size and at none of the price. Choose which or all of the three programs it contains to install, hit go and it’s done in a trice. Last time I installed MS Office I had to make tea, twice. Neither is FreeOffice alone as a perfectly valid alternative. Libre-

A SWEET SUITE: With no hidden costs. Office and OpenOffice have been around for years, both free. Google’s office apps are free to use online, there’s iWork for Apple, or you could go for the outliers like WPS Office or Calligra Office. How about a free operating system? Linux costs nothing and comes in a range of flavours, with Linux Ubuntu or Mint the easiest for beginners as the system moves
steadily closer to looking and acting like Windows. Microsoft’s Outlook was the gold standard in e-mail ‘clients’ (programs) for years; now many people see it as simply clunky, and there are scads of free alternatives, from the favourite Thunderbird to the more eccentric ones like Mailbird, the veteran Pegasus Mail or Incredimail. Professionals may shell out
some €20 a month to use Adobe’s Photoshop suite; the rest of us plebs should be perfectly content with popular and free photo-editing programs like GIMP, PhotoScape or my own personal favourite, Paint.NET. Need an audio editor? Audacity has done a brilliant job for free for years. Have to make PDF documents? You could pay handsomely for Adobe’s Acrobat, or just draw up your document in pretty much any modern wordprocessor without cost and then ‘Save As’ a PDF. AntiVirus? Companies make a fortune selling us paid protection, yet reviews consistently rate many of the freebies as being up there with the rest: Avira, Avast, BitDefender, AVG… So why not take a leaf from the book of Sandra Bullock, one of the world’s richest actors. ‘I’ll do anything for free stuff,’ she said a while back without a smidgen of shame. Me too, but in this instance without the hashtag.

It has the three main programs most people use: word-processing, a spreadsheet and presentations, all looking uncannily like their Microsoft rivals. Like MS Office there are fancy new ribbons; unlike it you can switch back to a ‘Classic’ menu. Installation is gratifyingly lightweight: the download file is just 400 MB, against four times that for MS Office. Best of all, and in common with most modern free suites, right up-front you can set the program permanently to save automatically in the Microsoft default formats which have now become the global standard (.docx, .xlsx and .pptx). What’s not to like?
The school run nightmare Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHEN I was a kid I used to walk to school, which was about a mile from my house, and that wasn’t unusual back in the 1950’s. Then I had kids of my own and the schools were a little bit further from home so we drove them to school. We parked in the car park and they would run off with their friends. You would never dream of parking in the street and blocking the traffic. It just wasn’t done. So what’s happened? Now, and I guess it’s not only here, parents think it’s OK to park anywhere to drop off and pick up their kids. They double park or park on roundabouts and, God forbid, you hoot or suggest they go park somewhere they are not bringing all the traffic to a halt, the abuse you get is unreal. OK, at a nursery obviously you are going to take them in, but I’m talking about big kids you know, the ones that you see walking down the street with their mates on their phones having a ciggy. So is it the kids being bone idle or is it the parents? I’d love to know because driving around any school area is a nightmare. Some schools do have police outside and they move people on, thankfully.
I hate letters from the tax man so I wasn’t happy when I received one the other day which, at first glance, looked like they wanted a serious chunk of money off me. On further investigation and with the help of Google translate and Mrs S’ expertise in reading Spanish, we discovered that what they wanted to know was if we owed a certain person money for work they had done for us, could we send the money to the Tax Office. Well, we had paid for the work so we called the person involved and asked what it was all about. He told us his version and said we should ignore it. Well, we don’t ignore the taxman’s letters so we took it to our accountant and he said he gets thousands of these things. Now here’s the thing - I would think, under the Data Protection Act, they shouldn’t be discussing somebody else’s debts with us because this could damage this man’s reputation, because he’s in dispute with the taxman. We are now in the situation that if we needed more work done should we use this person? I think it’s a diabolical liberty and shouldn’t be allowed. What do you think? Finally I read something that made me scratch my head. Apparently in 2012 the number of people that got married was 4,153,237 and, I don’t want to start any trouble, but shouldn’t that be an even number? mikesenker@gmail.com

Road traffic tragedy A WOMAN suffered smoke inhalation and around 30 people were evacuated from their homes when a fire broke out in a building in Calle Duque de Ahumada in Albox in the early hours of last Saturday night. The emergency services found the woman unconscious in a passageway. She
A 41-YEAR-OLD man died and a 42-year-old man was seriously injured when two cars went into each other in Senes last week. The accident involving three vehicles occurred on the A-349 at the kilometre 13 marker going towards Olula del Rio and near to the Tabernas solar platform.
House fire alarm was immediately taken to the Huercal-Overa hospital. Firefighters from Albox and Turre worked to extinguish the blaze, which reportedly started in the sitting room. Once the fire had been put
out most of the building’s residents were allowed to return to their homes, with the exception of those living on the third floor, who were rehoused until the building had been completely ventilated.

Next stage for Almanzora highway THE next stage on the Almanzora dual-carriageway is set to go ahead with the announcement the Junta de Andalucia’s Development and Housing department has put out to tender the project for building the stretch of road running between El Cucador in Zurgena and the intersection with the A-7 Mediterranean motorway. Companies have until January 4 next year to present their offers for the ₏39.4 million contract.
The works will involve a new 3.3-kilometre long road with four 3.5-metre wide lanes continuing on from the Albox-El Cucador stretch of dual-carriageway, as well as a 300-metre long bridge over the Almanzora river, a viaduct over the Lloron ravine and a second viaduct over the Agua dry river bed. The project, which will have European Regional Development Fund funding, will also include two link roads: one for traffic coming and going from Zurgena, El Cucador and Alfoquia, and another for La Concepcion and Palaces in HuercalOvera municipality. When the Almanzora dualcarriageway, or A-334, is fully completed it will run for 29 kilometres, going from the Mediterranean dual-carriageway as far inland as Fines in the marble production area of the province.

More space without moving PACKING up and upsizing doesn’t have to be the only way to meet your need for more space. There are other ways to make your home feel roomier. The first thing to establish is why you need more space, where the main problems lie and what will the space created be used for. If you’re after more room in the kitchen, removing a wall to create an open plan living and kitchen area could be the ideal solution. Think about what you are currently using rooms for, such as the laundry, study and bedrooms. Perhaps these rooms could have combined functions. Many homes have a study that rarely gets used. Look for another area or corner in the house which could fit a desk, in that way freeing up a whole room. Sliding doors create instant space in smaller homes as an outward opening door can be restrictive. They are becoming more popular for bedrooms and studies, as well as for wardrobes, kitchen cupboards and ensuites. One bathroom is not always ideal for an expanding family. Adding an en-suite or extra bathroom gives extra space and will increase the value of your home. Installing a gas hot water system may be expensive to connect, but are a lot cheaper to use than an electric version. Storage is obviously essential, as is redefining the purpose of any unused areas, either with shelves or cabinets, make sure you put them to work. And don’t forget outdoor space. Sheds, storage containers and

It’s a job we all put off whenever we can, but decluttering can free up more space than you imagine. Clothes and items that haven’t been worn or used in 12 months could be recycled, as can old books, magazines… the list goes on. And try to consider all future items before bringing them into your home to avoid having to go through the same process next year.

Feed the fire and garden FOR gardeners who heat their homes in winter using open fires, good-quality, cooled wood ashes can be a soil-amendment bonus. But it’s important to apply properly, as ashes can be a caustic topping for foliageheavy plants and seedlings. The benefits of recycling wood ash into the soil are for fertilizing and raising pH levels. Soil pH acidity is measured on a 14-point scale, with seven being neutral. Anything below this is classified acidic. Anything above is alkaline. So, according to horticultural experts, what this means in terms of soil ashes is that if your soil is 6.5 to 7 or above, don’t add them. With this in mind it is always advisable to test the soil before spreading ashes. Too high a pH will bind up micronutrients which your crops need. If you are just getting started in a garden spot, the advice is to soil-test every year until you get the fertility and soil organic matter right. Then you can test every other year or so. Wood ash contains calcium, magnesium, and potassium among a dozen or more important nutrients, but they vary widely with the types of trees being burned. Avoid using fireplace or wood ashes from pressuretreated wood, painted wood and cardboard as they carry chemicals that can harm plants. The same goes for charcoal residue from BBQ grills, fake fireplace logs and coal. Those should go to the landfill.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher SALES of plug-in hybrid vehicles are soaring because they offer low emissions and exceptional fuel economy and appeal to both family and business users. In this fast-developing sector, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a well-established contender, and a revised 2019 version is now available featuring a more powerful engine, restyled exterior, revised suspension and sharper steering. My test model was a midrange 4H version powered by a 2.4 litre 133 hp petrol engine, and with automatic transmission. The Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has electric batteries which can be charged on the move or plugged into the mains. And unlike some hybrids, the Outlander can be driven on electric
power only for up to 53 kilometres (33 miles), a useful feature for short commutes or in city traffic. Mains recharging time is four hours, but there is a rapid-charge facility too providing 80 per cent power with just a 30-minute charge. With a 0-100 kph time of 10.5 seconds and top speed of 170 kph (106 mph), this Outlander is fairly typical of its class, but where it out-scores most rivals is with its ultra-low emissions of just 40 g/km and its combined petrol/electric fuel economy of 56.2 kpl (159 mpg). Without using electric power, the car returns 17.7 kpl (50.4 mpg). Outlander PHEV models start at €39,410 (£34,255) and my mid-range 4H auto-transmission model with extra equipment costs €45,447 (£39,500). Standard kit includes all-wheeldrive, climate control, adaptive cruise control, front and rear
parking sensors, 360 degree parking camera, leather upholstery, touchscreen infotainment, sat-nav, Bluetooth, connectivity features, powered tailgate, heated steering wheel and windscreen, and extensive safety features including blind spot and rear traffic alerts. The Outlander has an imposing presence with a new more eye-catching front-end design. The cabin is spacious front and rear and there are various stowage spaces in the centre console and in the doors. Boot space is very good at 463 litres,
expanding to 1,602 with fold-flat rear seats. On the move the car is quiet and responsive, with precise steering and well-set suspension which gives a comfortable ride on all but very rough surfaces. The auto gearbox changes seamlessly and overall, the driving dynamics are quite refined. There are a number of plugin rivals in the sector, particularly from German manufacturers, but the latest Outlander has a lot to offer and justifiably can run with the pack leaders.

Sales growth for SEAT SEAT is continuing its trend of record growth as the year draws towards an end. Between January and October, the company sold 449,000 vehicles worldwide, which is 13.7 per cent more than in the same period of 2017 (395,100). This is the best result in the history of the carmaker, and it is above the figure achieved between January and October 2000 (433,600 cars). In October, sales fell by 16.8 per cent for a total of 33,400 vehicle deliveries. This decline can be explained by the sharp increase in sales prior to the implementation of the World Wide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) regulation that limits pollutants and CO2. SEAT Vice-president for Sales and Marketing Wayne Griffiths pointed out that “the October result was expected following the nearly 40 per cent increase in sales in July and August as a result of the WLTP effect. The volume should stabilise in November and we expect to get back on the growth track in the next few
months. SEAT aims to close 2018 with double digit growth for the second year in a row and achieve the highest sales volume in the history of the brand.” SEAT’s worldwide deliveries are making solid progress thanks to the excellent results in the five major European markets. In this sense, between January and October this year, Germany (98,000 vehicles; +16.6 per cent), Spain (93,300; + 15.0 per cent), the UK (54,700; +13.1 per cent), France (26,000; +27.9 per cent) and Italy (17,600; +15.7 per cent) posted double digit increases. These countries are leading SEAT’s sales growth together with Algeria, where the brand has already delivered 16,800 vehicles, four times more than in the same period of 2017 (3,900). Austria (16,900; +11.1 per cent), Poland (10,700; +15.8 per cent), Belgium (8,500; +28.4 per cent) and Portugal (8,500; +23.9 per cent) are four more main markets where SEAT recorded strong growth between January and October.

Croatia, England’s World Cup semi-final conquerors in Moscow in July, looked set to triumph once more and relegate Gareth Southgate’s side from the elite group. Andrej Kramaric put Croatia ahead just before the hour after taking an age to twist and turn before beating Jordan Pickford. Djokovic, 31, was the heavy favourite to win a sixth final but was outclassed 6-4 6-3 by the young German. SPRINTING great Michael Johnson said he had to apply an ‘Olympic mindset’ during his recovery from a mini-stroke. The American, 50, says he is “pretty much back to normal” after suffering a transient ischemic attack in September.
