FILMING for BBC One’s daytime crime drama series, The Mallorca Files, began on Monday at idyllic Ses Cases del Virrey boutique hotel on the outskirts of Inca. The 10-part crime drama is the brainchild of Dan Sefton, who wrote hits such as The Good Karma Hospital, Trust Me, Delicious and Porters. He ironically tweeted on the first day of shooting: ‘Day one,
another shoot in a hideous location.’ Producers opted to film at the historic manor, which dates back to the 17th century, because of the spectacular views offered by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which spreads out over 1,000,000 sqm. Set amongst the expat community, the series features a British and German detective who clash repeatedly over their very different approaches to
policing the island. While selfconfessed introverted Brit Miranda Blake takes her career and everything else in life seriously, her partner Max Wolf is a classic extrovert and unashamedly unconventional. According to controller of BBC programming and daytime, Dan McGolpin, the combination of these two characters and the sun-drenched setting promises humour and thrills, as the duo do battle to solve each new crime.
Land protection laws NEW regulations will forbid development on any rustic land in parts of Mallorca, unless it is directly linked to agricultural activity. The government’s new farming law is to be altered so that it will be impossible to build in zones of ‘high agrarian value’ (ZAVA), which includes countryside in Sa Pobla in Campos and much of the Pla de Sant Jordi in Palma. The initial draft of the law had created problems for political parties PSOE and Mes, due to differing opinions. But conse-
quent discussions between the groups have led to these changes. However, there could be exceptions as the government has agreed to allow island councils to make definitive decisions with regard to ZAVAs, which in theory could be less restrictive. Also contained in this law is the concept of ‘agro-stays,’ which allows farmhouses to be used as tourist accommodation. Originally the number of places was limited to six, but this could now be up to 10, on the condition the owner lives at the property.

THE Consell de Mallorca has joined a Balearic Islands-wide pact which commits regional authorities to provide family support programmes and detect the mistreatment and abuse of children, with more due to be invested in child support.
NATIONAL POLICE have arrested seven people in connection with raids on what they allege was one of the leading suppliers of marihuana in Mallorca. D r u g s o ff i c e r s r a i d e d five homes in the town of
Llucmajor as part of the investigation. They seized a total of 800 grams of marihuana, 470 plants, 2,800 cuttings, 100 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and €7,000 in cash in the raids.
The investigation was carried out by drugs officers with the Judicial Police and National Police. The seven suspects are aged between 20 and 30 years old, officers said. The case continues.
A 40-YEAR-OLD man carrying a ‘toy’ gun caused public alarm and prompted the deployment of ‘discreet’ police patrols which waited for his approach before bringing him to the ground. Local Police received ‘several calls’ at 7.15pm on Tuesday, reporting that the man, of Maghrebi origin, had been shopping in Mer-
cadona supermarket in Crist Rei, with a pistol in a belt across his back. The firearm turned out to be ‘simulated’ and fired harmless arrows. The offender said it was a gift for his son. THIS mainstay of Spanish culture is set to be celebrated the world over tomorrow (Friday) on the International Day of Flamenco. The day is celebrated every November 16 and the United Nations’ UNESCO culture body has declared flamenco a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The UN’s status is granted to art forms and traditions in an effort to protect them and to encourage people to continue practising them.
Flamenco is now a professionalised art form, but it emerged out of various folk traditions in the regions of Andalucia, Extremadura and Murcia. Andalucia is believed to be its original home and the art is thought to have been influenced by Romani people. The origins of the name Flamenco are disputed, but some say it may come from the Spanish word flama, meaning fire. The art is made up of six separate
Harassment probe THE National Police of Palma has arrested a 28-year-old man from the Czech Republic in connection with ‘harassment and persecution,’ amid claims he put a tracking device on her car. His ‘victim’ is reportedly a 22- yearold woman who travelled from Prague to Dubai and finally Mallorca. The female denounced the suspect for harassment at Palma station last Saturday, where it became apparent a restraining order had been issued by
a judge of the Czech Republic in July for a crime of ‘dangerous persecution.’ The young woman, who was in Mallorca with friends, told officers that she met had the detained in his home country. Sources claim the accused began to have a ‘disproportionate interest in the woman,’ to whom he allegedly sent emails, called from different mobile phones and put a tracking device on her car.

Luxury villa scam A REAL estate entrepreneur and a builder involved in an alleged luxury house scam in Mallorca will remain in custody after a ‘provisional’ prison sentence imposed in September was upheld. Juan Ignacio Lope Sola, who is dealing with the alleged property con involving more than 200 home buyers, has maintained the imprisonment of Michele Pilato and builder Jose Antonio Mir. They detained due to a ‘risk of escape and destruction of evi-

dence.’ The alleged mastermind of the scam, Carlos Garcia Roldan, reportedly fled the island some months ago when complaints against him began to accumulate and is said to have taken refuge in Colombia. Pilate maintains that he only shared premises with Roldan and was not involved in the fraud. While Mir claims he was a ‘simple employee of Roldan,’ and denies any involved in the scam, believed to be worth millions.

Plastic pollution AMICS DE LA TERRA Mallorca is calling on manufacturers and authorities to take some sort of action after recovering ‘mountains of plastic waste’ from Palma beaches and streams this week. Ten volunteers from the environmental group carried out a series of ‘clean up’ operations. In the first session at Torrent del Mal Pas, in the Bellver forest, six full bin liners (450 litres) of waste was collected in just two hours, of which 75 per cent was plastic containers and aluminum cans, as well as plastic bags. In the second cleaning, carried out on the beach of Ciutat Jardi, (650 litres), nine bin liners, was recovered in 50 sqm alone. Most of this was single-use containers, ‘mountains’ of wet wipes and cigarette butts. A spokesperson for the group said the ‘operation plastic off ’ campaign aims to demand that ‘manufacturing companies and authorities take greater responsibility and introduce policies which curb the excessive use of plastic and disposable containers.’

Marihuana crop poses public safety risk POLICE arrested a man from Manacor for cultivating 60 marihuana plants on the roof of a residential building and putting the safety of neighbours at risk with ‘precarious’ electrical connections. Water from the plantation, which has now been dismantled, was also reportedly flooding the lower floors of the block. National Police collaborated with the Local Police officers and firefighters of Manacor to locate and clear the
crop, while securing the building for the safety of fellow residents. A source claims that while looking for where the water was coming from, it became apparent the leak ‘originated from the roof of the building,’ where officers and the fire brigade came across a locked, metal door storage room, and could hear the ‘buzzing of an engine’ coming from inside. Officers waited for the suspect to return, who ‘agreed to
voluntarily open’ the door, behind which they found 60 marihuana plants cultivated under heat lamps, fans and extractors. The detainee alleged that they were for ‘own consumption.’ In addition to seizing the haul, officers and police checked the ‘precarious electrical installations of the heat sources,’ which posed a risk for the ‘electric discharges that could occur with the leakage of water.’
Honourable hound awarded DOKY, a police dog which works at the Baleares Police Headquarters, has been decorated with with the Honorable Mention Medal, by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska. The 10-year-old black labrador was just fourmonths-old when he stood out as ‘the ideal candidate as an explosives detector dog.’ And in his professional history, has carried out more than 8,000 preventative searches demonstrating ‘good character, integrity and courage.’ In addition, Doky has been part of hundreds of Extraordinary Devices procedures, such as Royal House visits, and assisting National and Foreign Authorities during terrorist threats. A spokesperson for the Minister of Interior said Doky ‘is outstanding when faced with stimuli from the outside’ and was duly recognised for ‘his excellent psychophysical state, maintaining a balance of imperturbable and constant suitability’ at all times.

Tougher laws in Palma A NEW public order by-law which will tackle illegal street vending, among other issues, is expected to come into effect next month. The much anticipated regulations have been approved by the governing body at Palma Town Hall. As well as banning illegal selling, customers will also face potential fines as part of the new rules. Similar to Calvia, Palma is introducing an offence for ‘balconing,’ moving from one balcony to another or any other potential dangerous activity. In addition, the clampdown measures will apply to the or-
ganisation of bar crawls, the use of electric scooters, and the sale of alcohol between midnight and 8am. The by-law will establish ‘zones of special tourist interest,’ which means that tougher action can be taken against ‘excesses’ in specific locations and there be a toughening-up of street drinking, with an emphasis on underage alcohol consumption. Sexual activities in vehicles, in public areas, in tourist accommodation or in private homes, will be subject to penalties if they are clearly visible and it will be necessary to wear tops if away from the beach.
Magical light effect SOME 2,500 visited Palma Cathedral at 8am last Sunday, the feast day for Saint Martin, to witness the ‘magical’ effect of it’s Gothic design rose window. On two days a year, the positioning of the window allows morning sunlight to pass through the giant eastern window and form a reflection below its smaller western counterpart. This is the result of a mathematical design from centuries ago.

Brit locked up after mistaken identity A HOLIDAYMAKER has told of his eight-day ordeal in a Spanish jail after being mistaken for an escaped convict. Eddie Gossage, 68, from Merseyside claims he was handcuffed in his Magaluf hotel room in Mallorca and then thrown into a Palma prison cell after police thought he was British fugitive Michael David Phillips. Mr Gossage was first questioned alongside his wife, Brenda, by border patrol guards at Palma airport on the Balearic island. The pair were able to leave the airport, and continued to their hotel in Magaluf. However, police later arrived at Mr Gossage’s hotel room, ordering him to ‘get dressed’ before handcuffing and taking the 68-year-old holidaymaker to jail.

and fingerprinted him and was told he was on Interpol’s most wanted list. He denied the allegations he was the escaped convict Michael David Phillips, in court the following day saying: “No, I’m Edward Gos-
sage.” Mr Gossage’s daughters Amanda and Jenny, flew out to join their distraught mother during the ordeal and were only able to see their incarcerated father through a glass partition. After eight days behind bars the British holidaymaker was released when the National Crime Agency (NCA), the body which issued the European Arrest Warrant for Phillips’ capture, was alerted to Mr Gossage’s dubious arrest by the British consulate. Mr Gossage claims he has suffered from traumatic flashbacks since returning home to Kirkby on Merseyside. The NCA said Mr Gossage’s wrongful arrest was the fault of Spanish police. Meanwhile, Michael David Phillips remains a fugitive on Interpol’s most wanted list.

Two vessels collide at sea SEVERAL people were taken to a Palma hospital after a ferry and a boat collided in Gran Canaria and the impact threw people on board into the sea. The heavily listing Naviera Armas ferry which was operating the route between Las Palmas and Sant a C r u z i n Te n e r i f e h a s
now safely made it back to port. It was initially reported that 15 people had been tossed into the sea, but afterwards the number was reduced to three. Coastguards received an e m e rg e n c y c a l l f r o m t h e crew to say some people who were on deck had fall-
en into the sea. Two rescue boats and a helicopter were quickly on the scene to pluck them f r o m t h e w a t e r. A l l w e r e then transferred to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital in Las Palmas. An investigation is now underway to discover how the vessels came to collide.

Tackling ‘nuisance’ passengers SEAT hogging, the practice of taking up more than one seat, will be banned on Palma’s EMT bus service as part of new measures being imposed. EMT president and Palma Transport councillor, Joan Ferrer, has outlined the new rules, which also include prohibiting the playing of music unless passengers have earphones, boarding without a ‘top’ or t-shirt, and taking bikes or scooters on buses unless they can be folded down. The move is aimed at eliminating activities which create a nuisance for other passengers. Fines for not paying for a ticket will be between €30 and €50, and sexist
advertising on buses will be prohibited. Officials are also looking into introducing regular ‘stops between stops’ as a way of reducing potential situations which may put female passengers at risk. In addition, Ferrer said that the town hall is considering whether or not to ban smoking at bus stops. She added that ‘in principle this doesn’t sound like a bad idea.’ There are already bans of this kind in Madrid and Valencia, but Ferrer pointed out that the town hall needs to establish if it has the powers to impose such a ban on what is considered a ‘public right of way.’

Progress in eradicating Asian wasp by Tara Rippin EXPERTS are optimistic Mallorca could be the first ‘territory’ to eradicate the predatory species of the velutina Asian wasp. If there are no new sightings by July 2020, the work of a team of biologists and expert bee keepers from Mar Leza University, will have made major progress in removing the species. In large numbers, the velutinas are capable of killing 12 million bees each year, amounting to 3,000 beehives. In the three years since the eradication project was launched, nests 80cm wide and weighing seven kilos have been found. These can house more than 8,000 wasps. Following reports in mainland Spain of 4,000 nests being recorded in Cantabria, for example, experts anticipated recovering 100 or more nests in Mallorca. But so far this year they have found just one. Some 580 traps baited with fish to attract the velutina wasp, have been distributed throughout the Serra mountain range, and are checked every 10 days. According to biologists and experts
VELUTINA: Predatory Asian hornet. in beekeeping at the Mar Leza University, if a velutina is found in a trap, it is because there is a nest nearby. Using binoculars, once the wasp is released, researchers use binoculars to follow its course ‘home.’ Having located the nest, the team wait until night time when all of the wasps are inside, and remove it. David Colomar, who is responsible for the Balaeric Islands Centre for the
Reception of Exotic Animals, said “removing the nest is key to ending the Asian wasp, at its weak point.” The velutina was first detected in Mallorca in 2015 by a beekeeper in the Soller Valley. That year the first nest was removed, but since then, the species has expanded within the Serra de Tramuntana and has affected a total of 10 municipalities on the island. Between 2015 and 2017 a total of 30
nests have been located and removed. Colomar said the ‘outlook is good’ and Mallorca can become a ‘benchmark’ in the removal of the Asian wasp, but ‘you should not lower your guard.’ Members of the public are also asked to report any sightings by emailing the Species Protection Service by email at: species@dgcapea.caib.es or by calling 971 784 956.

By John Smith AS is common practice for civil servants (as opposed to political appointees) who act as Ambassadors for the British government, there is a tendency to see them replaced after a period of four to five years. This is the case with the current British Ambassador to Spain, 51-year-old Simon Manley CMG who took up the post based in Madrid in 2013, after a long career in the Foreign Office which saw him seconded to both the United Nations and the European Union. At the time of his appointment, he could have had little idea that the Brexit Referendum result would have gone as it did, which meant his role as the leading British representative in the European country with the largest population of British expatriates, became a very difficult one. As a career civil servant, he is required to represent the will of the British government and to do his utmost to promote Britain within Spain, from both a cultural and economic point of view. The way in which the government has conducted itself in the Brexit negotiations has not been without difficulty, and it has been Simon Manley’s role to try to explain the situation to both the British communi-

Whether this appointment will be the pinnacle of his career remains to be seen, but it is interesting to know he will not be replaced until after the official date of Brexit which
takes place in March 2019. His replacement, Hugh Elliot has been a senior official in the Department for Exiting the European Union which shows the importance the British government places on this posting. Woman killed in lane collision A CORONER’S court in Somerset, UK, heard this week that Pam Millward from Winscombe died due to injuries sustained in a threecar accident in the Canary Islands on February 18 of this year. Evidence presented in the Avon Coroner ’s Court in Flax Bourton on Tuesday stated that Mrs Millward and her husband Paul were on holiday travelling to a Tenerife beach when a vehicle heading in the opposite direction collided with the British couple’s car. The inquest found Mrs Millward, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, died at the scene of the crash due to the severity of the injuries sustained, according to a post-mortem report. The Coroner’s court heard a vehicle crossed into the wrong lane and collided with two cars, including the vehicle Pam and her husband were travelling in. Pam, 77, was the only per-

NZD: The Kiwi dollar also strengthened by 0.5 per cent against the US dollar after hope of an end of the US-China trade war, but also a side-effect of improved sentiment resulting from the Brexit news flow. The kiwi also jumped two cents higher on the back of strong jobs data. Employment in New Zealand was up 1.1 per cent in the third quarter and the unemployment rate fell from 4.5 per cent to 3.9 per cent. This morning’s monetary policy statement from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand held the interest rate and predicted it would remain through 2019 and into 2020.

Nine held over asylum fraud NATIONAL POLICE officers working with their counterparts in France have arrested nine people in connection with the alleged fraudulent obtaining of asylum status for more than 1,000 Palestinian refugees. Spain’s Interior Ministry said the operation, coordinated by the Europe-wide Europol agency, saw five people detained in Madrid and four in France. Six of them have been remanded in custody. Investigators claim the nine suspects were part of a gang which has trafficked some 1,200 refugees from Palestine into Spain since January this year. They were brought into Spain through Madrid’s Adolfo Suarez-Barajas airport, with each refugee charged around €8,000 which netted the group about €9 million according to police allegations. Police raided three homes, one in Madrid and two in France, as part of the probe. More than €17,000 worth of cash in dollar and euro notes were seized along with seven vehicles, storage devices and documents. The case continues.
Baby abandoned in hospital OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested a British couple for allegedly abandoning their new-born child in hospital. Police sources suggest the baby’s mother was still dressed in her hospital gown when she was tracked down. The couple were held in the village of Fuente Piedra near Antequera, a short distance inland from Malaga. A spokesman for the National Police said: “Police received an alert from Antequera Hospital informing them a woman had given birth during the night and had just left the hospital, leaving her child there without saying anything to medical staff. “An operation was mounted to find the baby’s parents, which ended with their arrests in Fuente de Piedra.” The couple appeared in court behind closed doors on Friday, as only trials in Spain are held in public.

Spanish forces, including the National Police, have been the target of resentment from some pro-secession supporters following their crackdown on last year’s independence referendum. The clashes come as Spain continues to deal with the fallout from the vote, and from the failed declaration of independence that followed.

A 10-YEAR-OLD girl was among four people who were seriously injured after a driver lost control of his vehicle and mounted the pavement of a busy Barcelona street. According to the Barcelona City Council and the System Emergencies Mediques (SEM), the accident took place last Friday morning in Calle Santalo. It is reported that at 8.30am seven ambulances were called to the scene of an accident where four casualties, including a small child, were in need of immediate medical attention. No harm done THE head of a Benidorm and Costa Blanca hoteliers association has said that holiday bookings from British customers have remained stable despite Britain’s impending departure from the European Union (EU). Toni Mayor, president of Hosbec, said hotels have not had to cut prices in order to woo British travellers to the Costa Blanca. The recovery of rival destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt which up until now have been beset with security problems has also not impacted on bookings, Mayor added. The Hosbec president said confidence among hotel owners on the Costa Blanca had also been buoyed by the recent World Travel Market in London. The tourism industry fair saw representatives of Spanish regional tourist boards travel to the British capital to pitch themselves to the county’s holidaymakers. Mayor said hoteliers were confident a Brexit deal would be finalised within weeks. He also cited figures from Thomas Cook which showed they had already sold 15 per cent of their packages for next year’s holiday season. Mayor added that the hotel sector could not afford to be complacent. He said price increases of 15 per cent from some could lead to Costa Blanca hotels being undercut by rival destinations if British demand tightens.

Theresa May told an audience at London’s Guildhall there were still ‘significant’ issues to resolve but progress was being made thanks to the hard work of negotiators. May said at the City of London gathering that the negotiations were proving immensely difficult. It comes as her proposal to temporarily keep Britain in the customs union to avoid a backstop in Northern Ireland provoked ire from Conservative Party Brexit hard-liners. They are concerned it could mean Britain staying in significant parts of the EU’s framework indefinitely. The pro-union Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), May’s backers in Parliament, opposes any arrangement that would see Northern Ireland treated differently to the rest of Britain. In what appeared to be a nod to both, the Prime Minister said the

Visa free travel for Brits in Europe after Brexit BRUSSELS officials have announced today that British tourists won’t be required to apply for a visa to travel to European Union member countries after Brexit. British passport holders will be able to visit Europe for three months at a time whatever the outcome of Brexit, deal or no-deal. The news comes as the European Commission revealed plans today to review their visa regime after Britain’s exit from the European Union. An EU statement said: “The European Commission has today proposed to grant UK citizens visa-free travel to the EU after the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.” But British citizens wishing to work abroad in the European Union will likely require visas post Brexit, though the new guarantee will assure free travel to the Schengen area. “It would mean that UK citizens would not need a visa when travelling to the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period,” continued the statement.

VISA REGIME: Applies to EU member states. The new visa rulings will either come into effect immediately after a no-deal Brexit or, in the case of a deal being made, the ruling will be applied after the transitional exit-period concludes in December 2020. The EU warned however, that the visafree travel offer will be withdrawn if Europeans are not offered equal travel rights to
the UK after Brexit. But Theresa May has vowed to allow visa-free travel to the UK for Europeans after Brexit. A UK government spokes-person said in response: “We welcome the proposal by the European Commission, which reflects the future relationship that the UK wants with the rest of the EU.”
IAG, the owner of the British Airways airline, has been in talks with the Spanish government for support for its operations in the country’s airspace in the event Britain leaves the EU without a deal next year.
Port plan BRITISH Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has said the Kent port of Ramsgate could be expanded to accommodate larger ships as concerns over Dover becoming backlogged with traffic and freight after Brexit continue.
Brexit fish fleet fears SPANISH government officials have said the right of fishermen from the country to access British waters remains central to talks between London and Brussels amidst concerns over potential future losses. Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Luis Planas said Spain was concerned about its Galicia-based fishing fleet loosing access to British waters which could result in €500 million lost to the industry. Officials were also worried about Britishbased boats backed by Spanish money operating off Britain and the Falklands, Planas added. More than 300 Spanish fishing companies operate in Britain. “If there’s no access to waters, there’s no access to products,” Planas said. A University of Santiago report also claimed 81 industries including transport, finance and legal services could be affected if Spain loses access to British waters. Planas said he was optimistic Britain would not withdraw from the London Fisheries Convention which gives fishermen from European Union member states the right to access the country’s waters. Access rights for fishing were contentious issues during the EU referendum campaign. Support for Britain’s withdrawal from the EU came in part from coastal communities who claim their local fishing industry has suffered due to competition from continental boats.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard THE leaders of Spain’s political parties have begun pitching for votes in Andalucia’s upcoming election which is likely to be a dress rehearsal for a national ballot. The election seems on the surface to be the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) to lose. Junta de Andalucia President Susana Diaz, of the PSOE, fended off rival parties in 2015 elections and has held the post since 2013. Andalucia has been a PSOE stronghold since Spain transitioned to democracy in the late 1970’s. National polling has put the PSOE ahead of rival parties since taking power last June meaning, in theory, that its Andalucian arm should be comfortably re-elected on December 2. Success is however not guaranteed. Diaz faces potential assaults on all fronts, with one problem coming from inside her own party. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is set to appear at two campaign rallies in Andalucia. One is set for November 18 in Chiclana, Cadiz Province and the other for Marbella in Malaga Province on
Pitching for votes
CANVASSING: Diaz has hit the campaign trail. November 25. The number of planned visits contrasts with the Conservative Partido Popular (PP) leader Pablo Casado’s schedule, who has already been touring Andalucia extensively in support of candidate Juanma Moreno. The PP and other opposition
groups may choose to use the historic rivalry between Sanchez and Diaz to drive a wedge between them. The two stood against each other for the leadership of the PSOE in 2016 and their relationship was said to be lukewarm at best. Party sources claim it has recently been on the mend. Diaz’s saving grace may prove to be the ongoing jostling between the PP and the centrist Ciudadanos for the centre-right vote. PP strategists no doubt fear a rerun of the snap election in Cataluña last December which saw the party virtually wiped out by Albert Rivera’s Ciudadanos. Diaz also has to contend with Podemos which sits to the PSOE’s left. Their candidate Teresa Rodriguez said the anti-austerity part would keep the debate on a local footing. If her approach makes an impression on voters it could mean Podemos is able to chip away at the PSOE’s core support base, its leftwing voters.
Happiness ranking Satisfaction highest in Navarra and Balearics PEOPLE living in the regions of Navarra and the Balearic Islands are the happiest in Spain, according to a new ranking. The Centre for Sociological Investigaton (CIS) surveyed almost 3,000 people from across Spain and asked them how satisfied they were. It then ranked each region according to the responses from people living there. Navarra and the Balearic Islands scored highest on the regional ranking with respective scores of 7.85 and 7.84 on its satisfaction scale. The regions of Galicia, La Rioja and Asturias came last with scores of 7.05, 7.12 and 7.18 respectively. The findings reflect a similar survey from the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development
SATISFACTION: People in Navarra were found to be the happiest in Spain. (OECD) which placed the Balearic Islands first with 7.3 and Navarra second with 7.2. The Spanish average satisfaction rate was 7.36, according to the CIS survey. The OECD gave Spain an average rating of 6.5, meaning it ranked 31st out of the
38 countries studied. Men were found to be slightly happier than women and the happiest age group was young adults aged between 18 to 25 year olds. The regions of Andalucia, Valencia, Murcia gained scores of 7.4, 7.38 and 7.27 respectively.
Mulling a change SPAIN’S Deputy Prime Minister has said Spain’s Constitution may need some changes as the country marks the 40th anniversary of the document coming into force. Carmen Calvo said constitutional arrangements governing the central government’s relationship to regional authorities and the powers of the latter may need updating. It comes as a pro-Spanish unity Catalan politician called on Madrid to re-impose direct rule on the region. Calvo, who was speaking during an interview on the Els Matins programme on TV3, said the territorial structure of Spain ‘requires adjustment’. The debate over regional powers is bound up with the ongoing Catalan independence issue. Many there feel the region hands over far more tax revenue to Madrid than they get in return. Each of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities has different amounts of power. Many in Cataluña argue it should have a similar arrangement to the Basque Country which is allowed to keep more of the taxes it raises. Ongoing demands from Catalans for more powers, may force Madrid’s hand to grant more control over finance and other areas to stave off independence demands. Banks get stamped SPAIN will hold banks, rather than customers, responsible for paying mortgage stamp duty, thwarting a recent court ruling that home buyers should pay the tax. The announcement caps a turbulent few weeks in Spain’s banking sector in which the country’s Supreme Court ordered in mid-October that lenders should cover the costs, changing more than 20 years of jurisprudence. However, only 24 hours later the Supreme Court reversed its decision in light of a plunge in the share prices of Banco de Sabadell, Bankia
by Tom Woods and Caixa Bank. The judicial back and forth sparked harsh criticism from politicians across the political spectrum for damaging faith in the Spanish judicial system. Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has now confirmed in a press conference: “The Spanish will no longer pay this fee and the banking sector will. We will modify the law.” Mr Sanchez also revealed that his government would propose a law cre-
ating an independent consumer protection agency aimed at finance sector clients. Many Spaniards blame the banking sector for the 2008 financial crisis and the ensuing collapse of the housing market, which led to a wave of more than 300,000 foreclosures between 2009 and 2012. Analysts believe that shifting the stamp taxes to lenders will cost the Spanish banking sector about €640 million a year, though there is speculation that they may pass on the costs to customers.
A EUROPEAN UNION plan to tax Google, Facebook and other internet firms risks failure, after a handful of member states announced their opposition. The proposed 3 per cent levy on companies that make money from digital advertising and data is running into serious opposition from Ireland, Sweden and Denmark. Even Germany is seeking to water down and delay the measures, although a dozen countries are moving ahead with their own national digital taxes, with Spain and the UK among the recent converts.

THE European Commission has decided to put on hold its referral of Spain to the European Court of Justice for failing to implement its regulations on financial markets. Brussels has said that it accepts the Royal Decree which was approved by the Spanish government in October, which has moved to address previous shortcomings. However, the Commission has warned that if the measures set out in the Royal Decree are not adhered to in relation to supervision of credit institutions and in-
vestment firms, it will consider going through with legal action. Other issues the EU expects Spain to address this month include licensing, supervisory cooperation, risk management, corporate governance and capital buffers. These all form part of the EU’s Capital Requirements Directive, and its full adoption is compulsory. Further legislation expected in December from the Spanish government will focus on the solvency of credit institutions, and stock markets.

Telefonica sells Antares THE Catalana Occidente group has reached an agreement with Telefonica for the acquisition of the insurer Antares for a total of €161 million, according to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). The Catalan insurer will continue to manage the group policies of the Telefonica Group for the next 10 years, and will integrate Antares employees into its workforce. Telefonica has said that the sale is a piece of ‘non-
strategic business for the company’ which will generate an approximate capital gain of €90 million and a reduction of net financial close to €30 million. Antares offers a range of services including health insurance, accident and life insurance, and life savings protection in Spain up to €200,000. It was set up in 1987 and in 2011 began its expansion outside of Telefonica, providing services to other clients and companies.

Vodafone to slim down operations RESPONDING to challenging conditions in Spain and Italy, Vodafone’s new Chief Executive Nick Read said he would reduce operating costs b y € 1 . 2 b i l l i o n b y 2021. Replacing Vittorio Colao at the helm, Read revealed that he would also freeze the di v i d e n d u n t i l th e Britis h c o m p a n y h a s reduced its debt mountain. “My new strategic priorities focus on radically simplifying our operating model and g e n e r a t i n g b e tte r returns from our infrastructure assets,” Read said on Tuesday. Clothing giant gets changed SPANISH clothing giant Inditex, the owner of the Zara, Bershka and Massimo Dutti brands, has moved to close the Irish-based unit that handled a large chunk of its online sales until earlier this year. Inditex, considered one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, has come under fire in recent years for what has been described as ‘aggressive’ tax avoidance measures. A report produced by Green party lawmakers in the European parliament in 2016 suggested that the
firm had saved about €30 million in taxes between 2011 and 2014 by basing its ITX Fashion subsidiary in Ireland rather than Spain, where its headquarters are. Ireland’s corporate tax rate is 12.5 per cent, while companies can pay as much as 24 per cent in Spain. Documents filed in Ireland’s companies office in February indicated that Inditex was looking to wind down ITX Fashion as part of a global restructuring. On November 7 the subsidiary filed a voluntary request to be struck off the companies register. The 2016 Green party report suggested that the company has avoided more than €580 million in taxes by using entities based in Ireland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Diversity - Bah, humbug!
IS there such a thing as a diversity biscuit? If so, this year’s deluge of TV commercial Christmas-tide claptrap truly does take the full tin. A whole conglomeration of adverts has been sanitised by political correctness, dissected with diversity, mugged by multiculturism and treated to a positive blizzard of ‘snowflaking’ that is utterly mind-boggling. Mixed marriages and relationships abound. Bunches of people in cars, restaurants and crowd locations, all containing the ‘correct’ number of ethnic minorities. Happy families of carefully selected denominations gather around tables, groaning with Christmas fare, and all is well with the world on the birthday of our Lord. Ha! Unfortunately, this so called ‘merry’ conception is in no way a true reflection of British society. The great cities and communities of the UK are more segregated than ever. Whole boroughs are dedicated to one particular race or religion. A vast majority don’t even celebrate Christmas. Diversity is not working. It’s a lie, pure and simple. A pipe dream as dangerous as it is degenerate. Until we face up to the truth, we will NEVER find the Shangri-La of existence so desperately depicted by these sadly delusional ostriches, who are in utter denial of the true state of affairs and seem to worm their way into every nook and cranny of our beleaguered social existence... talking of whom.
DIVERSITY: Does it really exist? It did strike me that the gatherings of those responsible for these ads must produce some of the most racial, riddled, confusing, mish-mash of problems imaginable. Terrified of being declared non-PC, the selection committees or casting agents, are no longer torn between those who may have more talent and be better qualified for
the gig, but more importantly are judged by their ethnic background and appearance. Try to imagine a large modern casting agency. The room is full of selectors choosing artists to appear in up-and-coming TV commercials, all bartering and shouting to each other, rather like the stock exchange floor.
‘I need a brown male adult over here’. ‘I can give you two mixed teens for it’. ‘No? what about a female ginger?’ ‘Are you kidding? gingers are at a premium, one ginger for at least two blacks and a brown’. ‘I’ve got two indiscernible.’ -Voice across the room - ‘I need two green-eyed white adults, one teen brown and an off-white baby. What ya got in exchange?’ ‘Two mixed balds and an adult blonde brown’. ‘No chance.’ ‘Hey what about a black and white dog?’ (Look out for that one around the table!) ‘Can anyone find me a mixed-race parsnip and a yellow carrot?’ Arghh! The whole thing has become utterly ridiculous. Nothing more than a pathetic attempt to fool the viewing public that good old diversity is truly working and we are all living the paradise of goodwill and human understanding. Well I’m sorry, I maintain that truth in these matters, however hard it is to bear, is the only pathway to peaceful resolution. For those who would rather not hear the truth, I leave you with an ominous reflection of the great George Orwell, who wrote: ‘The further society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it’! TECH FOR THE TIMID THE quotation stopped me dead in my digital tracks: ‘The best sign of a healthy relationship, is no sign of it on Facebook’. I’d only just finished lowering my eyebrows over the findings of an American tech journalist. He discovered through diligent and dogged research, that Google knew everywhere he had been, even though ‘location’ was disabled on his phone. It k n e w h o w m u ch h e e x ercised, all of his interests, who his friends were, who he worked for, what he bought, that his daughter was pregnant (she hadn’t yet told him), and it still had every e-mail he h a d e v e r r e c e i v e d o r s e n t even deleted ones. That’s just for starters. Privacy is the price we pay for our brave new digital world. Millenn i a l s wo r r y l e s s a b o u t th is trade-off than the more fogeyish among us. Get over it pops, they say. So we must, like it or not. It’s either that these days, or go and live in a cave.

PRIVACY: How much are we sharing online? The secret to not lying awake at night worrying just how much Big Tech knows about you, is to redefine your whole concept of privacy. P riv ac y is es s e ntia l w he n it keeps the bad guys out of your bank account. But it’s sadly outmoded now if we want to keep u s in g th o s e s hiny ne w (fre e !) apps that insist on looting our contacts lists, our browsing and
location history and our shopping habits. Can you imagine the alternative: paying Google €10 or €20 a month to use its indispensable search engine? Going back to the penny-post to stay in touch with friends and family? Me neither. The dow ns ide to B ig Te c h knowing everything about you is when Big Tech gets hacked.
Some 145 million Americans discovered that rather starkly during t he i nf am ous Equi f ax c re dit rat i ng agency br each a while back, and barely a week goes by now without news of another hack. Yes we should be able to control who knows what about us, but we’re not there yet, and young people in particular seem happier to pay the privacy price in exchange for the undoubted benefits of the digital world. Smart appliances and the socalled Internet of Things will only make it worse, as does every time we click ‘agree’ to give our consent. Privacy i s now an i l l usi on, says a former Amazon executive, and if you’re a privacy zealot you don’t stand a chance. That’s simply because what the KGB would have extracted from people under torture, we now knowi ngl y and wi l l i ngl y publish on Facebook. Food for thought, but keep it to yourself.
Naked on the net AS privacy takes a beating, the best one can do is never tell people more than they need to know about you. Always use an alias where possible, never give your main e-mail address to the commercial world, and check carefully what you’re agreeing to before hitting that button. If you’re really concerned, under the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulations, or GDPR, you now have the right to ask Big Tech what data it holds on you. Vary your passwords, regularly clean out your browser history, and turn off ‘location’ on your phone except if you really need it. F i n a l l y, t r y n o t t o p o s t anything online you’d cringe to see when older and wiser. What goes on the net, stays on the net. Forever.

TV drama to tell story of Sir Philip Green’s rise to power
Richard Shanley THE story of the ‘hubris and greed’ of billionaire Sir Philip Green’s controversial rise to retail power is set to be turned into a TV drama. Mammoth Screen, the company behind Victoria and Poldark, has secured the rights to adapt a book covering the Arcadia Group boss’s business dealings. Damaged Goods: The Inside Story of Sir Philip Green, The Collapse of BHS and the Death of The High Street, written by Sunday Times business journalist Oliver Shah, was published in the summer. It follows the ascent of Sir Philip, who through Arcadia owns high street brands including Top Shop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins. The book came out a few months before the retail tycoon was named as the businessman behind an injunction against the Daily Telegraph. The newspaper had earlier reported that an unnamed businessman had been granted an injunction to prevent them revealing alleged sexual ha-

I didn’t knock Christianity WHEN did I knock Christianity? I didn’t and I am one! Although I was disappointed to see the ‘God himself told the Christians themselves that homosexuality is an abomination’ card was played by Michael Hill (Letters, Issue 1470). He said a lot more too, Mike, but the majority of Christians don’t seem to apply those to their daily lives either. I also don’t believe any god would condemn anyone based on sexual persuasion! However, I am on the fence when it comes to the business’s decision and ultimate court findings and want to make it clear that I had no objection to Leapy’s opinion on that subject. On one hand I feel the positive discrimination being demonstrated in the UK goes too far the wrong way. However, I am not so sure I agree that someone should be refused something that would otherwise be available to them had it not been for their sex, sexuality, religion etc. My outrage was at the tone of the column, the name calling and reference to lunatics and militants for having views different to the columnist’s own. As for my reference to the civility of the UK, I hold my hands up as being inappropriate. Sure, there are things in Spain that I might not agree with, but I chose to make this country my home for all the positives this country also holds. Jamie Truby

Keeping young for his age I JUST happened to notice that among the birthdays in edition 1739 was David de Gea the Manchester United goalkeeper. Apparently he was 90 years old on November 7 and I have to say that he does not look a day over 27!! Tax move welcome A DECISION from the Spanish government to make banks bear the costs of a controversial mortgage tax is a welcome end to a saga of contradictory decisions from the courts. The Supreme Court originally heard the case last month and decided first to make the banks pay the levy, overturning 20 years of legal precedent. That decision was reversed after the shares of Spanish banks tumbled on the stock market and customers were made to pay. The government stepped in, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez saying customers would ‘never again’ pay the charge. The government’s decision is a boost for borrowers and homeowners. It is also a positive move for the Spanish Treasury which has secured €2 billion a year from the levy as a result. The unwelcome part of the saga comes from it exposing the influence private capital and the financial industry has on Spain’s legal and political system. A court decision should, under the rule of law, be the final say on the matter. No less so than with the Supreme Court, the highest legal body in the land. The court’s earlier reversal showed financial institutions, which are not accountable to the Spanish people, enjoyed far too much influence over them. The government’s intervention is welcome because it means the people’s representatives were able to force powerful commercial interests to play by the rules.

Neck scans could predict Alzheimer’s disease A BRITISH study of more than 3,000 people has found that a fiveminute scan could predict dementia, a decade before symptoms appear. Researchers at University College London claims that measuring somebody’s pulse from their neck can predict damage in the brain which causes problems with memory and thinking skills in old age. Data suggests those with the most intense pulse in this area, were around 50 per cent more likely to suffer rapid cognitive decline over the following 10 years. The pulse of 3,191 people with an average age of 61, was measured using one of the large carotid arteries which supplies blood to the head and neck. An ultrasound recorded the sound waves that bounce off blood vessels. Over the next 15 years the partici-

If larger studies of more people are carried out, the neck scan could become a routine test which doctors give middle-aged people at risk of dementia.

Panic attacks WHILE it won’t stop panic attacks occurring, knowing what is happening to you physiologically and why, can help prevent it escalating. During an attack, you will often automatically take shallow, rapid breaths. Simple breathing exercises can help you to be conscious of filling your lungs, slowing your heart rate. Focus on relaxing your muscles. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), techniques such as visualisation and yoga, teach you to connect to sources of acute physical tension, so that you know where you need to focus on relaxing. During an attack, try to limit the stimuli you are experiencing. If possible find a dark, quiet space where you can practise your breathing and relaxation techniques. Avoid caffeine, a possible trigger, and drink water to avoid dehydration, another possible trigger. Combat external stressors by making the most of audio apps, such as guided meditation, or an audio book to ground you mentally and hold your focus.
A surge in the search for a smooth body NEW research reveals more and more young men are embracing the ‘hair-free body’ trend, believed to have been inspired by reality show, Love Island. Over the last two years, the popularity of body hair removal has shot up among the nation’s men. According to market intelligence agency Mintel, figures for June 2018 show as many as 46 per cent of all men removed hair from their bodies, up from just over a third (36 per cent) in 2016. In fact, it seems that no place on young men’s bodies is considered too private, as
they shave, wax and laser their way to the smoothest of looks. A plucky 57 per cent of young British males aged 16-24 say they have removed hair from their pubic region, compared to 40 per cent in 2016. Meanwhile, 42 per cent of males aged 16-24 remove hair from their underarms, (16 per cent in 2016), and shaving the chest has doubled, to 30 per cent in 2018, and the back from 10 per cent in 2016, to now 12 per cent this year. Mintel research reveals that young men aged 16-24 are removing body hair al-
most as much as young women of the same age, with similar proportions of both (29 per cent of men versus 34 per cent of women). The top three areas for women in this age group are underarms (90 per cent), legs (90 per cent) and the pubic region (75 per cent). While almost half (45 per cent) of adults agree it is unfair that women’s bodies are expected to be hair-free, around one in five (19 per cent) adults agree that men should remove hair from their bodies. Roshida Khanom, associate director of beauty and personal care at Mintel, said: “While the pressure on women remains higher, we’re seeing more and more young men in particular feeling the need to be hair free too. “Reality TV shows such as Love Island have popularised hairless torsos, normalising the hair free aes-
thetic amongst men.” Facial hair removal has also increased from 73 per cent in 2016 to 80 per cent this year. Raising eyebrows, the number of Brits removing hair from their eyebrows has gone from 33 per cent in 2016 to over four in 10 (42 per cent). Nose hair removal has risen from 11 to 20 per cent. While older men have traditionally been less concerned with hair removal (just 12 per cent of men aged over 65 removed hair from their nose in 2016), modern times have seen a shift. Recent data shows 31 per cent of men aged over 65 removed hair from their nose, with 32 per cent from their eyebrows and 34 per cent from from their ears. However, the beard trend shows no evidence of waning, with 44 per cent of all men sporting ‘some’ stubble, 20 per cent a closely trimmed beard and 7 per cent a thick/full beard.

rock, pop and experimental bands to provide a fresh and original slant to their work. He will be playing at Palma’s Teatre Principal on Saturday from 8pm. El Niño will perform his latest show, which promises to be as innovative as his earlier works, with him interpreting and reinventing sae-

The millennial market MILLENIALS have been accused of being many things, from work-shy and over-dependent on technology, to easily-offended ‘snowflakes.’ Now, experts have concluded this generation - broadly agreed to cover anyone born between the early 80’s and mid-90’s - has even affected the way the housing market works. At the recent Real Estate Forum, property experts warned how attitudes of those aged under 38 towards work, money and responsibility,
were creating shifts in Spain’s rental and property development sectors. While the housing market continues to boom here, developers say they are concerned the rental sector is spiralling out of control, with millennials often reluctant to put down permanent roots. According to one publication, only 15 per cent of buyers are aged under 38. Mostly graduating from school or university during the middle of a recession, many millennials have found that opportuni-
ties to get their foot in the door of preferred jobs are limited. Experts say this in turn has created an emphasis on enjoying the now, rather than saving for later, fuelling a generation heavily reliant on renting. Alberto Valls, a financial advisor partner at consultancy firm Deloitte, explained: “Given this situation, in Spain a reform is urgently needed to professionalise the offer and the management of the rent.” As technology continues to grow, so does the rate at which millennials use the internet. Marcos Foncuevas, manager of Valdebebas, a new development in Madrid, says this is shaping the way young people spend money, explaining: “They have everything online and can compare everything. There is no physical store that can compete, so now the challenge of any shopping centre and any business in it, is to offer chances and experi-
ences that can compete with the speed of the internet.” Experts also agree increasing tech-savviness may shape the way new homes are built, with developers choosing to include ‘smart’ systems, or offer the use of virtual reality simulators to help advertise their homes. Foncuevas says millennials are also less likely than previous generations to hold traditional office-based jobs, creating a need to think about the layout of new developments. He explains, “We must remember that millennials invented the collaborative economy. “This, beyond Uber or Airbnb, suggests that they need new services from buildings. From co-working spaces in the same development, to areas which combine leisure and work.” All this begs multiple questions about the changing face of Spain’s property market, from what impact rising rental rates will have on house

IF you are continually wiping condensation off your windows and have a dehumidifier constantly running, you may want to think about ventilation as a permanent solution. But for a short term fix there are a number of things you can do. If you have a washing machine or tumble dryer, ensure it is vented correctly. From just one load of washing, two litres of water is emitted into the air. Where possible, dry clothes outdoors to prevent excess moisture from building up inside. If this isn’t an option, keep them in a bathroom with the door closed, and windows open until the clothes are fully dry. When cooking food, boiling the kettle or taking a shower, ensure your kitchen or bathroom door is kept closed to prevent the moisture in the air from going into colder rooms, which will cause condensation to form. Ensure you cover pans with a

As well as being a wonderful addition to cooking, studies have found that the smell of mint can lower feelings of frustration and boost awareness. Growing a mint plant from cuttings is simple, just cut a healthy spring, root it and plant. Aloe vera is great for sunburn, moisturising the skin
and soothing insect bites, but it also purifies the air of carcinogens and emits oxygen at night. Aloe plants should be potted in a soil mix made for succulents. They prefer to be dry and warm, so water only when the soil is mostly dried out. The snake plant is also known to be great for purifying the air during the night and emitting oxygen while you sleep. The added bonus is that they are extremely hardy, and hard to kill.
Basil is good to have around the kitchen. It is perfect for pesto and contains a compound called linalool which has been found to reduce the activity of certain genes which go into overdrive during stressful situations. So
it’s worth adding to as many meals as you can. In an average four-by-five metre room, experts recommend having five plants or more, claiming that five plants provide 60 per cent more well-being.

STOKE HIGH SCHOOL in Ipswich reported concerns to the Home Office that a pupil claiming to be 15 might be much older, when classmates posted a photo of him on social media with the caption: ‘How’s there a 30-year-old man in our maths class?’ Images were shared online of a Facebook picture of a man with a beard, alleging it was the ‘pupil’. The problem is, those doing age assessments for refugees, have to operate within rules to ensure fairness. Decisions can be neither arbirtary nor inconsistent. It’s a problem not unique to the UK. In some countries, medical evidence is gathered to reach a decision (A case in Sweden where a refugee who claimed to be a minor, was reckoned by dentists to be 38), but the British medical establishment isn’t happy to use such information for non-medical purposes. The 6ft 1in ‘pupil’ told classmates he needed GCSEs, as qualifications from his country may not be recognised in the UK. This is often the case at all different levels in the belief that ‘foreign’ qualifications won’t be acceptable.

When signing at the notary I was informed by them that the buyer ’s solicitor would retain four years’ worth of unpaid council tax, amounting to €1,600. DREAMY: Scottie’s journey took him through a stone village with dusky mountains in the distance. tle bridge and the tree cover becomes complete, and I’m a little nervous. Normally we drive through dusty artichoke farms dotted with purple flowers, and a small stone village, and the dusky mountains in the distance loom closer and swallow us up with their pine forests and sudden surprising ocean vistas. I start my day as the sun sets, and race it home as it rises an upsidedownness bookended by
huge orange suns. But now there is no sign of the sun, and I can see he is talking to me so I pull my headphones off and he asks ‘are you tired?’ I am exhausted - I’ve just finished six nights in a row, and it’s been a huge week. I tell him so, and he says ... ‘if you don’t mind, I want to go and wake up my... DONKEY!’ I say no problem, a little bewil-
dered, and 10 nervous minutes later, he stops suddenly in the middle of the lane, leans on the horn, and starts screaming obscenities into the pitch black. ‘Dorito, you bastard! Wake the f*** up!’ There is no response and he leaps out of the car and disappears into the night and I suddenly feel like I’m in a Mallorcan mash-up of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and The Cabin in the Woods. I hear footsteps running and a light nearby comes on, but I can’t see the driver anywhere, or Dorito the elusive donkey. Eventually, the driver comes back with a broad smile slapped across his face, enjoying the moment, and he tells me he and Dorito are engaged in a war of wills, because the donkey loves to wake him early every day, relishing in the act and demanding breakfast. I am embroiled in a revenge war between man and beast. The driver yanks the window down and screams Dorito’s name, and finally this does the trick. I hear him before I see him. The donkey begins braying repeatedly,
one of the loudest cries I’ve heard an animal make. Dorito berates the driver. The driver curses at Dorito. And slowly, emerging clumsily into the light like a sleepwalker, stumbling a little, swearing like a sailor, is a miniature donkey who clearly has the lungs of a siren. He stands at the fence, and the two of them screech at one another for a bit. The driver cackles, and says okaywegonow, and elaborates for me as we drive about the numerous benefits of owning donkeys (plus some sheep and 50 chickens), and politely points out the swamp where the flamingos will arrive next week, and I smile at my life and the night finally gives way to the sun. THE retired police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo, is now in prison awaiting trial for money laundering, breach of confidence and sundry criminal offences. In retaliation he is revealing bugged conversations with political celebs who would obviously rather those conversations were not made public. Villarejo isn’t fussy, and is as happy embarrassing the PP as the PSOE, and his latest victim is Dolores de Cospedal. De Cospedal, accompanied by her husband Ignacio Lopez del Hierro, entertained him in her office at the Partido Popular’s Calle Genova headquarters in Madrid. At the time she was the PP’s secretary-general and wanted the lowdown on party grandee Javier Arenas, the mentor whom by then she had turned on. Villarejo was also asked to keep businessman Lopez del Hierro au fait with Gurtel developments. De Cospedal who has now resigned from the PP’s executive committee, remains superglued to her parliamentary seat but what emerges from the bugged conversations is their banality and dullness. separatists who want to abolish Spain, also want to abolish the monarchy, still incensed by Felipe VI’s speech calling for unity on October 2 last year, following the unauthorised referendum. That speech appeared to have been written by the then-PP government but according to some sources it was all Felipe’s own work, although it’s debatable if that makes the speech itself any better. What is not debatable, is that the

The straw that broke the camel’s back is I’ve just read that a 69-year-old man who now identifies as a 45-year-old has begun a legal battle to lower his age to help him pull women on Tinder. Emile Ratelband argues if transgender people are allowed to change their sex, he should be allowed to change his date of birth. The entrepreneur and self-help guru says doctors told him he has the body of a 45year-old, and he’s suing his local authority in the Netherlands after they refused to amend his age on official documents. It’s nonsense. He’s taking the Mickey but who can blame him for trying. He reckoned if he’s 45 again he can get a mortgage and buy a new house and talks about other benefits. Society, governments and anyone else that is involved have got to stop all this ‘identifying.’ Take the case of the 62-yearold bloke - a convicted sex offender and paedophile who, after being sent to a men’s prison, told authorities he ‘identified’ as a woman. So the authorities moved him to a women’s prison where he attacked and sex-
ually assaulted four women. Are they bonkers? Other than changing his name and wearing wigs and women’s clothing, he made no effort to embark on gender reassignment. As I’ve said before, I don’t care if you are gay, straight, bi, asexual, trans or anything else. But, once you start using all ‘identifying’ stuff to hurt men, women and children, animals or plants you don’t have any rights or civil liberties and all the dogooders and such can KMA. Lock ‘em up, throw away the key! Now, we all have printers. They used to be very expensive but now you can buy a hokey cokey 2000 all singing and dancing one for €50. Good price we all think when we buy them. How do they do it for the money, you ask? Well I’ll tell you how they do it. They rob you blind when you want to buy a new ink cartridge which, by the way seems to last a much shorter time than they used to when printers were €400-500. Did you know that printer ink, pro rata, is more expensive than gold in terms of weight? They charge over €40 for a multi pack of cartridges which is actually almost the price of the printer. Another absolute rip off! It reminds me of the old days when they used to almost give away razors but charge fortunes for the razor blades. Addison Lee seeks autonomy SELF-DRIVING cars could be on London’s streets within three years under a partnership between private hire firm Addison Lee, and British driverless car pioneers Oxbotica. The companies have signed a deal, to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles by 2021. Oxbotica will start mapping more than 250,000 miles of public roads in and around London from next month. While the link-up could allow Addison Lee’s fleet of black Mercedes and Prius cabs to be driven autonomously, the 5,000 drivers in London will remain employed, says the firm. It could also offer a cheaper, autonomous ride-sharing version of its hire service, with the first stage likely to be corporate airport shuttles. However, London looks set to be at least a year behind other cities. Tokyo launched an experimental driverless taxi in August, with a view to having a full service in place ready for the 2020 Olympics.

“Toyota C-HR Hybrid: In 1968, one year after Hyundai Motor Company was founded, it signed an agreement to build Fords under licence in South Korea.
Big and butch TOYOTA’S C-HR Hybrid certainly catches the eye, and is far more visually striking than most SUVs. The C-HR looks the way it does because it’s designed to appeal to bright young things who might need or want a small SUV with a modicum of practicality, but aren’t yet ready to blend in. The C-HR’s quirkiness continues inside, where a swooping dashboard sits beneath a leathereffect soft-touch pad and houses a well placed, solid-feeling switchgear. Elsewhere you’ll find enormous cup holders, tracts of glossy piano-black plastic and, on the door trims, some curious three-dimensional diamond-effect patterns which seem to be designed to ape the quilted inserts found on pricier cars. These look and feel more like petrified crocodile skin, but they’re in keeping with the quirky feel of the C-HR and make a refreshing change from the usual fabric or faux-leather swatches. The infotainment system is a little fiddly, and you have to take your
eyes off the road to make sure you’ve pressed the right touch-sensitive ‘buttons.’ The chunky rear pillars extend into the doors, meaning there is no window where your head actually rests, only a thick chunk of black plastic. While there is plenty of leg room on offer, the boot could be a little bigger. The hybrid C-HR accelerates seamlessly and silently, and easily

It is now 40 years since Mercedes-Benz launched its first factory-built estate, on the pla t f o r m o f t h e lo n g running - and highly regarded - W123 series. Real revival continues REAL MADRID narrowed the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona to four points with a hardfought 4-2 victory at Celta Vigo. Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead with an expert finish from Luka Modric’s pass. After the break Benzema’s shot hit the post and went in off defender Gustavo Cabral to put Real 20 up, but Celta’s Hugo Mallo scored with a smart volley. Sergio Ramos chipped in a penalty and Dani Ceballos smashed home in stoppage time after Cabral’s sending off, with Brais Mendez adding a late consolation. It was Real’s fourth straight win under caretaker manager Santiago Solari, who was put in charge when Julen Lopetegui was sacked after the El Classico humiliation. Barcelona lost a home league match for the first time in two years as the Spanish champions were beaten by an inspired Real Betis display at the Nou Camp. NOVAK DJOKOVIC says his return to world number one seems ‘unreal’ as he looks to cap a remarkable renaissance with victory at the ATP Finals in London. Djokovic, 31, is the heavy favourite to win the season for a sixth time, despite having dropped out of the world’s top 20 in May. The Serb returned from elbow surgery earlier this year to win both Wimbledon and the US Open, before reclaiming the world’s top ranking from the injured Rafael Nadal earlier this month. “It took a bit of time for me to find my confidence and level of tennis that I was looking for and working hard for,” he said. “It’s been an amazing season, everything seems a bit unreal to be honest.” Rafael Nadal is not playing the ATP Finals as he is having ankle surgery, as well as recuperating from an abdominal muscle injury. Nadal has retired from two of the three hard court events he has competed at this season - the Australian Open and the US Open - but won the other, the Rogers Cup. The Spaniard’s absence means 14-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will end the year as the world number one for the fifth time in his career: level with Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors, and one behind Pete Sampras.

MANCHESTER CITY proved just too good for rivals Manchester United as they won 3-1 in Sunday’s derby at the Etihad Stadium. City dominated the early stages and took the lead through David Silva from eight yards, before Sergio Aguero’s fine strike from an acute angle just after the break put them in control. Anthony Martial’s penalty 10 minutes later got United back in contention, but the champions regained their two-goal advantage with four minutes remaining as substitute Ilkay Gundogan controlled superbly and slotted home from close range. Formula 1: Verstappen loses cool LEWIS HAMILTON claimed a fortunate win in the Brazilian Grand Prix after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen lost the lead in a collision with backmarker Esteban Ocon. Verstappen was on course for a superb win when Force India’s Ocon left his car on the inside of the Red Bull at the Senna S and forced it into a spin. The incident saw the Dutchman drop back to second place and although he came back at Hamilton, he could not quite catch him. A clearly furious Verstappen confronted Ocon in the driver
weighing area afterwards and reportedly pushed the Frenchman three times in his frustration. Both drivers were called to see the race stewards to explain the incident, and Verstappen has been ordered to carry out ‘two days of public service’ to atone for his behaviour. The punishment is similar to that served by Sebastian Vettel after his collision with Hamilton at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Priz, where he took part in educational activities organised by the FIA. Hamilton’s win helped Mercedes secure the constructor’s
championship, with Ferrari’s challenge fading. Verstappen looked on course for victory after surging through the field from fifth to second, before overtaking Hamilton on lap 39. However, on lap 44 Ocon, who was fresh from pitting for new tyres, clipped the Red Bull when trying to unlap himself. Verstappen’s right rear wheel caught Ocon’s left front as he turned into the corner, pitching him into a spin and into the runoff area. The Dutchman blasted ‘what an idiot’ into the radio.
