Honouring earthquake victims EVENTS to mark the 500th anniversary of the earthquake which destroyed the old settlement of Vera drew to a close with a moving ceremony to honour the 150 people who lost their lives when the disaster struck. Last Friday November 9 marked the 500th anniversary of the tragedy. The President of the regional
government, Susana Diaz, was among the dignitaries present for the night-time ceremony staged in the town’s central square and attended by more than 500 people. Both the Junta de Andalucia President and Vera mayor Feliz Lopez placed floral offerings under the tombstone placed against the town hall façade.
Then, after a minute’s silence, a video recreating the terrible disaster was projected onto the front of the parish church. The day’s commemorative events had begun with pupils from three schools planting 150 cypresses in the Rambla park, each tree representing one of the earthquake victims. Later in the day there
was a solemn mass, and a conference about the earthquake given by Madrid History Institute scientist Cesar Jose Olivera Serrano. In the evening the streets of Vera became the stage for a dramatised route featuring characters from this period of Vera’s past. Vera has organised a series of cultural activities
throughout the year to commemorate the fifth centenary of the earthquake which changed the town’s history. As well as conferences, exhibitions and guided visits, archaeological digs are being carried out on the ancient Bayra settlement, which before the quake stood on what is today the Holy Spirit Hill.

NEWS EXTRA Bribe suspect NATIONAL POLICE arrested a Local Policeman and a quantity surveyor in Almeria on suspicion of getting money from businesses in return for issuing reports for establishment inspections, licences and police investigations, following complaints about noise.

Jewels on wheels LAST weekend’s classic car run showed off the contrasting landscapes and beauty of the province’s coast and inland areas. The 29th Almeria Automobile Route went from the pristine coastline of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park to the marble area, going through Nijar, Fines, Olula and Macael. Some 50 vehicles took part in the event, organised by the Vintage Car Club. Among them were mythical makes
Rolls-Royce, Packard, Ford, Franklin and Mercedes. There were participants from all over Spain, and keen motorists coming from as far as Madrid, Ciudad Real and Pontevedra. The route started with an exhibition in Almeria City in front of the regional government offices, attracting hundreds of people to admire the unique jewels on wheels. Almeria President Gabrial Amat expressed his admiration for the motor-
ing enthusiasts whose hard work and effort kept the vehicles in pristine running order, in some cases restoring vehicles which had been all but on the scrap heap. Almeria Vintage Car Club President Jose Juan Soria thanked the regional administration for its support, and commented, “we want to preserve this heritage created with our own personal efforts and love, so that future generations can enjoy it.”

Lights, camera, action THE curtain comes up on the 17th Almeria International Film Festival this weekend. Featuring more than 100 free activities and three galas, the cinema world’s spotlight will be firmly on the provincial capital throughout the week-long event. Speaking at a presentation of the event last Monday, provincial Culture Deputy Antonio Jesus Rodriguez said the festival had become a ‘national and international reference for the cinematographic industry.’ More than 2,400 short films and 102 full-length movies were presented for this edition of the festival. The event opens this Saturday with a ‘blue carpet’ gala at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium presented by the actress LLum Barrera. The Almeria Land of Cinema award will be presented to Spanish actor Luis Tosar, and the Filming Almeria prize will go to the series Los Nuestros 2 (Our People), which this year was shot in the province.

A COUPLE of inmates tried to escape from the El Acebuche prison in the early hours of Sunday morning, managing to bend the bars on the window of their cell from which they then hung sheets to lower themselves down the wall. The 23-year-olds’ breakout plan was thwarted when prison guards got wind of what they were up to.

CLASSICALLY SPANISH: Tomorrow is the International Day of Flamenco. THIS mainstay of Spanish culture is set to be celebrated the world over tomorrow (Friday) on the International Day of Flamenco. The day is celebrated every November 16 and the United Nations’ UNESCO culture body has declared flamenco a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The UN’s status is granted to art forms and traditions in an effort to protect them and to encourage people to continue practising them.
Flamenco is now a professionalised art form, but it emerged out of various folk traditions in the regions of Andalucia, Extremadura and Murcia. Andalucia is believed to be its original home and the art is thought to have been influenced by Romani people. The origins of the name Flamenco are disputed, but some say it may come from the Spanish word flama, meaning fire. The art is made up of six separate
actions. These are cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance), jaleo (vocals and chorus clapping), palmas (hand clapping) and pitos (finger snapping). There are several different varieties, or palos, of Flamenco. They are classified according to their rhythm, chord progression and place of origin. Cartageneras is one example, with that style originally from Cartagena. Although originally Spanish, the dance is now performed worldwide.

Drug arrests GUARDIA CIVIL in Berja arrested two people identified only as 30year-old M M M and 34-year-old J L M B after finding illegal drugs inside a car one of them was driving. Officers’ suspicions were first raised when one of them ignored Guardia instructions to pull over at a traffic control. The driver then stopped further down the road and rushed into a shop. Officers went after him, and when he couldn’t come up with a satisfac-
tory answer for failing to stop when instructed, they searched his vehicle. They found a container in a door pocket with marihuana inside and a number of bags of cocaine inside a glove box. The driver was detained on charges of a crime against public health, along with the owner of the vehicle. Officer seized 4.65 grammes of marihuana and 19 bags of cocaine weighing 22 grammes in total.

Living history THE recreation of life in a medieval military camp in the Alcazaba fortification in Almeria City attracted nearly 3,000 visitors last weekend. The attraction depicted the everyday life of the Castillian forces during the years of the War of Granada from 1481 to 1492, with pavillions, shops, furniture, belongings and the kind of arms used at this time. Visitors were treated to exhibitions of training with weapons, jousting on horseback and battle

formations, and had the opportunity to take part in 14 different educational workshops on subjects including fencing, shields and archaeology. The Andalucia regional government Culture, Tourism and Sport delegate, Afredo Valdivia, described the cultural initiative as “a unique opportunity to see and live the history of the decline of the Moorish world in the context of the War of Granada, with a staging which introduces the spectator to the daily atmosphere of the period.”

Eco recognition ILLEGAL: The rave lacked any authorisation.
Ilegal rave drugs bust GUARDIA CIVIL arrested three people on drugs charges at an illegal rave in Enix. Officers looking into the possible public safety offence came across a crowd of people partying to electronic music without any authorisation to stage a gathering of this kind. They spotted one of the partygoers heading for a car and then throwing a plastic bag on the ground, which they tried to hide. Officers found a number of number of ecstasy pills with
different logos inside the bag as well as cocaine wrapped up in plastic. They also realised that a couple of other partygoers were showing the signs of having taken the drug, and when they frisked them they found further ecstasy pills, a substance called crystal in plastic wrapping and bags of marihuana and hashish. The Guardia identified the three detained individuals as 23-year-old J A C G A from Aguadulce, C R S, also 23, from Almeria City, and 20-year-old A F F from El Ejido.
THE environmental credentials of a Carboneras beach have earned it an ecological recognition. The Ategrus Waste and Environment Management Technical Association awarded the Marinicas beach its Ecoplaya flag, which means it complies with its maximum quality levels. To qualify for this environmental endorsement the association takes into account aspects such as cleanliness of the sand, quality of the water, the facilities on the beach, services offered to beachgoers and accessibility. There are a whole set of criteria related to equipment and maintenance from the management and sustainability point of view. Carboneras mayor Felipe Cayuela congratulated everyone whose hard work “makes it possible that the locality’s beaches show off their best faces.” He also thanked Tourism councillor Pascual Diaz Hernandez for all his efforts. The recognition for the Marinicas comes on top of the three other EU Blue Flags and the Q for Quality flags already flying on the Carboneras beaches.

Pipe upgrades SAN ISIDRO is the latest town in Nijar where works to upgrade water and sewage pipes are underway. They follow works in areas including Campohermoso, San Jose and Aguam a rg a a s p a r t o f t h e council’s agreement with the company Emanagua, which manages the water cycle in the municipality on updating the pipe network. In San Isidro, 132 metres of new 315mm diameter pipes have already been laid, with 27 new connections, and the re-asphalting of 223sqm of streets. The works aim to make the network more efficient, doing away with leaks and guaranteeing improved channelling of waste to the treatment plant. Nihar has now invested €800,000 in improvements to water and sewage networks.

Farmhouse break-ins GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a man suspected of breaking into farmhouses in Cuevas del Almanzora. Identified as a 42-year-old local man, his detention follows a Gu a rd ia in v es tig a tion into eight reported robberies from relatively isolated properties in October, the thief getting away with occupants’ personal possessions and tools. Interviews with victims of the robberies led officers to establish that there had been a common modus operandi, the thief getting into the property by prising open iron security grilles on one of the windows with something like a car jack. Gastronomy tourism THE delegation from Almeria Council visiting the World Travel Market tourism fair in London last week, made sure the city’s naming as national gastronomy capital was well and truly highlighted. City Promotion Councillor Carolina Lafita took part in meetings with tour operators and travel agencies, underlining the importance of the recognition, and explaining the city council would be organising an extensive programme of activities orientated around provincial cuisine next year. “We want 2019 to serve to position Almeria in the segment of gastronomy tourism”, she commented. She said travel companies had shown considerable interest, indicating the gastronomy recognition and associated events will be a further attraction for tourists visiting the city, on top of sun, beach, culture and cinema. The World Travel Market ran from November 5 to 7. Almeria C ity had its own space within the Costa Almeria area on the Andalucia Tourism stand. The next important opportunity to bring the Spanish City of Gastronomy award to the world’s attention will be the FITUR International Tourism Fair in Madrid in January, when current title holder Leon will pass on the mantle to Almeria.

Local robbers unmasked GUARDIA CIVIL arrested two men in connection with several robberies in Huercal-Overa. Officers received reports of three thefts. In the first, the thief took €550 in cash from a town business, and in the second, the robber grabbed a silver ring and personal documents from a shop assistant. In the third incident, a man grabbed a mobile phone valued at €900 from a 16-year-old. In all three incidents the attacker was wearing a balaclava and carrying

GUARDIA CIVIL uncovered a sophisticated indoor marihuana plantation in Vicar and made four arrests. The Guardia first launched Operation Propalar in May, when they received a number of anonymous calls expressing concern about the strong smell of marihuana close to a primary school. After narrowing down the possible sources of the smell, the Guardia put various properties under surveillance. This revealed suspicious comings and goings from three terraced houses, all of them rented out, in the same street as the school. Further investigations led the Guardia to suspect the base-
carried by the robbers. In further investigations the officers also recovered the stolen mobile, which was hidden on the roof of an abandoned property. The Guardia later discovered the first robbery had been carried out by a second individual, who had lent the detained man the balaclava and the knife. He too was located and arrested. Guardia identified the two individuals as a 29-year-old and a 39year-old, both from HuercalOvera.

They also discovered a complex system for powering the plantation and for facilitating the cultivation, storage and sale of the plants. A search resulted in the seizure of €4,000 in cash, six mobile phones, a laptop, eight industrial airconditioning units, 30 ventilators, six extractor fans, 243 halogen lamps, an Audi A5, and other items. Four individuals aged between 22 and 50 were detained.

7 arrested in drugs bust NATIONAL POLICE have arrested seven people in connection with raids on what they allege was one of the leading suppliers of marihuana in Mallorca. D r u g s o ff i c e r s r a i d e d five homes in the town of
Llucmajor as part of the investigation. They seized a total of 800 grams of marihuana, 470 plants, 2,800 cuttings, 100 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and €7,000 in cash in the raids.
The investigation was carried out by drugs officers with the Judicial Police and National Police. The seven suspects are aged between 20 and 30 years old, officers said. The case continues.

A HOLIDAYMAKER has told of his eight-day ordeal in a Spanish jail after being mistaken for an escaped convict. Eddie Gossage, 68, from Merseyside claims he was
handcuffed in his Magaluf hotel room in Mallorca and then thrown into a Palma prison cell after police thought he was British fugitive Michael David Phillips. Mr Gossage was first
questioned alongside his wife, Brenda, by border patrol guards at Palma airport on the Balearic island. The pair were able to leave the airport, and continued to their hotel in Magaluf. However, police later arrived at Mr Gossage’s hotel room, ordering him to ‘get dressed’ before handcuffing and taking the 68-year-old holidaymaker to jail. He was unaware that his identity had been stolen by the 63-year-old escaped convict, Michael David Phillips, and was being used as an alias by the convicted drug lord. Mr Gossage said Spanish police officers photographed and fingerprinted him and was told he was on Interpol’s most wanted list. He denied the allegations he was the escaped convict Michael David Phillips, in court the following day saying: “No, I’m Edward Gossage.” Mr Gossage’s daughters Amanda and Jenny, flew out

Changing of the guard in Spain AS is common practice for civil servants (as opposed to political appointees) who act as Ambassadors for the British government, there is a tendency to see them replaced after a period of four to five years. This is the case with the current British Ambassador to Spain, 51-year-old Simon Manley CMG who took up the post based in Madrid in 2013, after a long career in the Foreign Office which saw him seconded to both the United Nations and the European Union. At the time of his appointment, he could have had little idea that the Brexit Referendum result would have gone as it did, which meant his role as the leading British representative in the European country with the largest population of British expatriates, became a very difficult one. The way in which the government has conducted itself in the Brexit negotiations
has not been without difficulty, and it has been Simon Manley’s role to try to explain the situation to both the British community living in (and visiting) Spain, as well as Spanish politicians and economic partners, when in reality, there has been very little positive to say. There is no doubt he has conducted himself with dignity and tried to allay fears by visiting and speaking to British residents throughout Spain, but when there is little concrete to report (especially if, as has been suggested there are ‘secret deals’ in place) his position
has been very difficult. During the earlier part of his posting to Spain, he was dealing with the Partido Popular over many matters, including of course the thorny situation with Gibraltar. This was exacerbated by the Brexit vote which was bound to get the Foreign Minister at the time, José Manuel García-Margallo, rushing to call for talks concerning dual sovereignty over the Rock, but with the fall of that government, the new PSOE minority in power has indicated that it does not see Gibraltar as a major stumbling block. With the look of a slightly
SIMON MANLEY: Promoting British culture. perplexed don from academia, Simon Manley is in fact a very astute diplomat who has worked tirelessly to represent Britain in Spain with the aim of promoting the country to Spanish politicians and the people, as well as endeavouring to foster opportunities for British industry to attract investment from, and trade with Spain. Whether this appointment will be the pinnacle of his career remains to be seen, but it is interesting to know he will not be replaced until after the official date of Brexit which takes place in March 2019. His replacement, Hugh Elliot has been a
senior official in the Department for Exiting the European Union which shows the importance the British government places on this posting. As he nears the end of his role as Britain’s most senior diplomat in Spain, we at Euro Weekly News look back over his five-year-plus stay in Spain and congratulate him for the way in which he has performed his duties. In addition, we would like to wish Simon, his Catalan born lawyer wife Maria Isabel and their three children, all of the very best for the future wherever it may take them.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard THE leaders of Spain’s political parties have begun pitching for votes in Andalucia’s upcoming election which is likely to be a dress rehearsal for a national ballot. The election seems on the surface to be the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) to lose. Junta de Andalucia President Susana Diaz, of the PSOE, fended off rival parties in 2015 elections and has held the post since 2013. Andalucia has been a PSOE stronghold since Spain transitioned to democracy in the late 1970’s. National polling has put the PSOE ahead of rival parties since taking power last June meaning, in theory, that its Andalucian arm should be comfortably re-elected on December 2. Success is however not guaranteed. Diaz faces potential assaults on all fronts, with one problem coming from inside her own party. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is set to appear at two campaign rallies in Andalucia. One is set for November 18 in Chiclana, Cadiz Province and the other for Marbella in Malaga Province on

CANVASSING: Diaz has hit the campaign trail. November 25. The number of planned visits contrasts with the Conservative Partido Popular (PP) leader Pablo Casado’s schedule, who has already been touring Andalucia extensively in support of candidate Juanma Moreno. The PP and other opposition
groups may choose to use the historic rivalry between Sanchez and Diaz to drive a wedge between them. The two stood against each other for the leadership of the PSOE in 2016 and their relationship was said to be lukewarm at best. Party sources claim it has recently been on the mend. Diaz’s saving grace may prove to be the ongoing jostling between the PP and the centrist Ciudadanos for the centre-right vote. PP strategists no doubt fear a rerun of the snap election in Cataluña last December which saw the party virtually wiped out by Albert Rivera’s Ciudadanos. Diaz also has to contend with Podemos which sits to the PSOE’s left. Their candidate Teresa Rodriguez said the anti-austerity part would keep the debate on a local footing. If her approach makes an impression on voters it could mean Podemos is able to chip away at the PSOE’s core support base, its leftwing voters.
Mulling a change SPAIN’S Deputy Prime Minister has said Spain’s Constitution may need some changes as the country marks the 40th anniversary of the document coming into force. Carmen Calvo said constitutional arrangements governing the central government’s relationship to regional authorities and the powers of the latter may need updating. It comes as a pro-Spanish unity Catalan politician called on Madrid to re-impose direct rule on the region. Calvo, who was speaking during an interview on the Els Matins programme on TV3, said the territorial structure of Spain ‘requires adjustment’. The debate over regional powers is bound up with the ongoing Catalan independence issue. Many there feel the region hands over far more tax revenue to Madrid than they get in return. Each of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities has different amounts of power. Many in Cataluña argue it should have a similar arrangement to the Basque Country which is allowed to keep more of the taxes it raises. Ongoing demands from Catalans for more powers, may force Madrid’s hand to grant more control over finance and other areas to stave off independence demands. No harm done THE head of a Benidorm and Costa Blanca hoteliers association has said that holiday bookings from British customers have remained stable despite Britain’s impending departure from the European Union (EU). Toni Mayor, president of Hosbec, said hotels have not had to cut prices in order to woo British travellers to the Costa Blanca. The recovery of rival destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt which up until now have been beset with security problems has also not impacted on bookings, Mayor added. The Hosbec president said confidence among hotel owners on the Costa Blanca had also been buoyed by the recent World Travel Market in London. The tourism industry fair saw representatives of Spanish regional tourist boards travel to the British capital to pitch themselves to the county’s holidaymakers. Mayor said hoteliers were confident a Brexit deal would be finalised within weeks. He also cited figures from Thomas Cook which showed they had already sold 15 per cent of their packages for next year’s holiday season. Mayor added that the hotel sector could not afford to be complacent. He said price increases of 15 per cent from some could lead to Costa Blanca hotels being undercut by rival destinations if British demand tightens.

Theresa May told an audience at London’s Guildhall there were still ‘significant’ issues to resolve but progress was being made thanks to the hard work of negotiators. May said at the City of London gathering that the negotiations were proving immensely difficult. It comes as her proposal to temporarily keep Britain in the customs union to avoid a backstop in Northern Ireland provoked ire from Conservative Party Brexit hard-liners. They are concerned it could mean Britain staying in significant parts of the EU’s framework indefinitely. The pro-union Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), May’s backers in Parliament, opposes any arrangement that would see Northern Ireland treated differently to the rest of Britain. In what appeared to be a nod to both, the Prime Minister said the

Woman killed in lane collision A CORONER’S court in Somerset, UK, heard this week that Pam Millward from Winscombe died due to injuries sustained in a three-car accident in the Canary Islands on February 18 of this year. Evidence presented in the Avon Coroner’s Court in Flax Bourton on Tuesday stated that Mrs Millward and her husband Paul were on holiday travelling to a Tenerife beach when a vehicle heading in the opposite direction collided with the British couple’s car. The inquest found Mrs Millward, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, died at the scene of the crash due to the severity of the injuries sustained, according to a post-mortem report. The Coroner’s court heard a vehicle crossed into the wrong lane and collided with two cars, including the vehicle Pam and her husband were travelling in. Pam, 77, was the only person killed in the collision, however, three others suffered ‘serious injuries,’ the court heard. The assistant coroner, Myfanwy Buckeridge, recounted the events of February 18: “The accident occurred when Pam was travelling in Tenerife. “Her husband was driving and they were travelling downhill on their way to the beach.

Banks get stamped SPAIN will hold banks, rather than customers, responsible for paying mortgage stamp duty, thwarting a recent court ruling that home buyers should pay the tax. The announcement caps a turbulent few weeks in Spain’s banking sector in which the country’s Supreme Court ordered in mid-October that lenders should cover the costs, changing more than 20 years of jurisprudence. However, only 24 hours later the Supreme Court reversed its decision in light of a plunge in the share prices of Banco de Sabadell, Bankia
by Tom Woods and Caixa Bank. The judicial back and forth sparked harsh criticism from politicians across the political spectrum for damaging faith in the Spanish judicial system. Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has now confirmed in a press conference: “The Spanish will no longer pay this fee and the banking sector will. We will modify the law.” Mr Sanchez also revealed that his government would propose a law cre-
ating an independent consumer protection agency aimed at finance sector clients. Many Spaniards blame the banking sector for the 2008 financial crisis and the ensuing collapse of the housing market, which led to a wave of more than 300,000 foreclosures between 2009 and 2012. Analysts believe that shifting the stamp taxes to lenders will cost the Spanish banking sector about €640 million a year, though there is speculation that they may pass on the costs to customers.
A EUROPEAN UNION plan to tax Google, Facebook and other internet firms risks failure, after a handful of member states announced their opposition. The proposed 3 per cent levy on companies that make money from digital advertising and data is running into serious opposition from Ireland, Sweden and Denmark. THE European Commission has decided to put on hold its referral of Spain to the European Court of Justice for failing to implement its regulations on financial markets. Brussels has said that it accepts the Royal Decree which was approved by the Spanish government in October, which has moved to address previous shortcomings. However, the Commission has warned that if the measures set out in the Royal Decree are not adhered to in relation to supervision of credit institutions and in-
vestment firms, it will consider going through with legal action. Other issues the EU expects Spain to address this month include licensing, supervisory cooperation, risk management, corporate governance and capital buffers. These all form part of the EU’s Capital Requirements Directive, and its full adoption is compulsory. Further legislation expected in December from the Spanish government will focus on the solvency of credit institutions, and stock markets.
Buying boom A STUDY by price comparison site Idealo suggests that 68 per cent of Spaniards will purchase something on ‘Black Friday,’ which falls on November 23 and has become the signature day of festive discounts.

Telefonica sells Antares THE Catalana Occidente group has reached an agreement with Telefonica for the acquisition of the insurer Antares for a total of €161 million, according to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). The Catalan insurer will continue to manage the group policies of the Telefonica Group for the next 10 years, and will integrate Antares employees into its workforce. Telefonica has said that the sale is a piece of ‘non-
strategic business for the company’ which will generate an approximate capital gain of €90 million and a reduction of net financial close to €30 million. Antares offers a range of services including health insurance, accident and life insurance, and life savings protection in Spain up to €200,000. It was set up in 1987 and in 2011 began its expansion outside of Telefonica, providing services to other clients and companies.

Vodafone to slim down operations RESPONDING to challenging conditions in Spain and Italy, Vodafone’s new Chief Executive Nick Read said he would reduce operating costs b y € 1 . 2 b i l l i o n b y 2021. Clothing giant gets changed SPANISH clothing giant Inditex, the owner of the Zara, Bershka and Massimo Dutti brands, has moved to close the Irish-based unit that handled a large chunk of its online sales until earlier this year. Inditex, considered one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, has come under fire in recent years for what has been described as ‘aggressive’ tax avoidance measures. A report produced by Green party lawmakers in the European parliament in 2016 suggested that the
firm had saved about €30 million in taxes between 2011 and 2014 by basing its ITX Fashion subsidiary in Ireland rather than Spain, where its headquarters are. Ireland’s corporate tax rate is 12.5 per cent, while companies can pay as much as 24 per cent in Spain. Documents filed in Ireland’s companies office in February indicated that Inditex was looking to wind down ITX Fashion as part of a global restructuring. On November 7 the subsidiary filed a voluntary request to be struck off the companies register. The 2016 Green party report suggested that the company has avoided more than €580 million in taxes by using entities based in Ireland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Diversity - Bah, humbug!
IS there such a thing as a diversity biscuit? If so, this year’s deluge of TV commercial Christmas-tide claptrap truly does take the full tin. A whole conglomeration of adverts has been sanitised by political correctness, dissected with diversity, mugged by multiculturism and treated to a positive blizzard of ‘snowflaking’ that is utterly mind-boggling. Mixed marriages and relationships abound. Bunches of people in cars, restaurants and crowd locations, all containing the ‘correct’ number of ethnic minorities. Happy families of carefully selected denominations gather around tables, groaning with Christmas fare, and all is well with the world on the birthday of our Lord. Ha! Unfortunately, this so called ‘merry’ conception is in no way a true reflection of British society. The great cities and communities of the UK are more segregated than ever. Whole boroughs are dedicated to one particular race or religion. A vast majority don’t even celebrate Christmas. Diversity is not working. It’s a lie, pure and simple. A pipe dream as dangerous as it is degenerate. Until we face up to the truth, we will NEVER find the Shangri-La of existence so desperately depicted by these sadly delusional ostriches, who are in utter denial of the true state of affairs and seem to worm their way into every nook and cranny of our beleaguered social existence... talking of whom.
DIVERSITY: Does it really exist? It did strike me that the gatherings of those responsible for these ads must produce some of the most racial, riddled, confusing, mish-mash of problems imaginable. Terrified of being declared non-PC, the selection committees or casting agents, are no longer torn between those who may have more talent and be better qualified for
the gig, but more importantly are judged by their ethnic background and appearance. Try to imagine a large modern casting agency. The room is full of selectors choosing artists to appear in up-and-coming TV commercials, all bartering and shouting to each other, rather like the stock exchange floor.
‘I need a brown male adult over here’. ‘I can give you two mixed teens for it’. ‘No? what about a female ginger?’ ‘Are you kidding? gingers are at a premium, one ginger for at least two blacks and a brown’. ‘I’ve got two indiscernible.’ -Voice across the room - ‘I need two green-eyed white adults, one teen brown and an off-white baby. What ya got in exchange?’ ‘Two mixed balds and an adult blonde brown’. ‘No chance.’ ‘Hey what about a black and white dog?’ (Look out for that one around the table!) ‘Can anyone find me a mixed-race parsnip and a yellow carrot?’ Arghh! The whole thing has become utterly ridiculous. Nothing more than a pathetic attempt to fool the viewing public that good old diversity is truly working and we are all living the paradise of goodwill and human understanding. Well I’m sorry, I maintain that truth in these matters, however hard it is to bear, is the only pathway to peaceful resolution. For those who would rather not hear the truth, I leave you with an ominous reflection of the great George Orwell, who wrote: ‘The further society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it’! HAVE you ever been sound asleep only to find on waking that it has not been hours, but merely minutes since you closed your eyes? It happened to me the other night. I had been watching ‘News at 10’ for 15 minutes, before drifting into the land of nod. The next thing I knew, the princess was shaking me and suggesting I go to bed. I thought I must have been out for an hour or so, but there was Mary Nightingale winding up the news with the last story of the night, indicating that my snooze had lasted no more than a few minutes. It brought back a distant memory of one particular night, and the day before we were due to depart for our annual fortnight at the seaside. We were going to Margate, and my parents had kindly offered to take along my best mate Tommy, who lived with his struggling widowed mum and three siblings, none of whom
SNOOZE: 40 winks can seem like 40 hours… had ever seen the sea before. This was in the days when poverty truly meant poverty. Because we had an early start the next morning and needed to catch the trolley bus into town at some stupid hour, we were sent
to bed at eight. We were both very much awake to start with, and we chatted in hushed tones about the days ahead. But soon, Tommy closed his eyes and was gone. What!
Here was I, a seasoned traveller who had seen it all before, unable to even think about closing my eyes, and Tommy the vacation virgin softly snoring next to me as if tomorrow was just another day. Next to Christmas, this was the most stupendous day of the year and the culmination of weeks of feverish anticipation, but there was Tommy buzz-sawing it away, dead to the world. After a few minutes of this, I decided enough was enough, so shaking him vigorously I announced that it was 6am and my mum had called us to go downstairs for a wash before we got dressed. He had no idea that he had been sleeping for less than half an hour, and as I crept on to the landing I had to stifle my giggles as I heard the surprised exclamations from my parents as Wee Willy Winkie presented himself in the living room. My erstwhile friend is now a peer of the realm and for obvious reasons, I cannot name him. But although we keep a tenuous link through the exchange of Christmas cards each year mine with cute little robins, and his always depicting the Houses of Parliament - I wonder if he remembers that night so many years ago, and the people who gave him his first glimpse of the sea.

THE retired police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo, is now in prison awaiting trial for money laundering, breach of confidence and sundry criminal offences. In retaliation he is revealing bugged conversations with political celebs who would obviously rather those conversations were not made public. Villarejo isn’t fussy, and is as happy embarrassing the PP as the PSOE, and his latest victim is Dolores de Cospedal. De Cospedal, accompanied by her husband Ignacio Lopez del Hierro, entertained him in her office at the Partido Popular’s Calle Genova headquarters in Madrid. At the time she was the PP’s secretary-general and wanted the lowdown on party grandee Javier Arenas, the mentor whom by then she had turned on. Villarejo was also asked to keep businessman Lopez del Hierro au fait with Gurtel developments. De Cospedal who has now resigned from the PP’s executive committee, remains superglued to her parliamentary seat but what emerges from the bugged conversations is their banality and dullness. John Le Carre it ain’t.

Banal and dull speech made matters worse. For nonseparatists and the rest of Spain, Felipe was preaching to the converted while the separatists refused to get the message. It was a far cry from his father’s speech on the night of February 23 in 1981 when Juan Carlos defused a coup d’état. Kingly reflections IT has been said that in Spain, the Left and especially the far Left, identifies democracy with republicanism. That’s logical, bearing in mind that until Franco’s death, the only time democracy was present, recognisable and documented in Spain was the Second Republic, declared in 1931 and interred in 1939. It’s hardly surprising that the Catalan
separatists who want to abolish Spain, also want to abolish the monarchy, still incensed by Felipe VI’s speech calling for unity on October 2 last year, following the unauthorised referendum. That speech appeared to have been written by the then-PP government but according to some sources it was all Felipe’s own work, although it’s debatable if that makes the speech itself any better. What is not debatable, is that the

Sign of the times MEMBERS of the former Catalan government who are now remanded in prison, will no longer be charged with rebellion, only sedition, which still sounds more like Ruritania or a banana republic than a 21st century democracy. The third charge of misappropriation of public funds also remains, and there can be nothing more representative of the 21st century than that.

STOKE HIGH SCHOOL in Ipswich reported concerns to the Home Office that a pupil claiming to be 15 might be much older, when classmates posted a photo of him on social media with the caption: ‘How’s there a 30-year-old man in our maths class?’ Images were shared online of a Facebook picture of a man with a beard, alleging it was the ‘pupil’. The problem is, those doing age assessments for refugees, have to operate within rules to ensure fairness. Decisions can be neither arbirtary nor inconsistent. It’s a problem not unique to the UK. In some countries, medical evidence is gathered to reach a decision (A case in Sweden where a refugee who claimed to be a minor, was reckoned by dentists to be 38), but the British medical establishment isn’t happy to use such information for non-medical purposes. The 6ft 1in ‘pupil’ told classmates he needed GCSEs, as qualifications from his country may not be recognised in the UK. This is often the case at all different levels in the belief that ‘foreign’ qualifications won’t be acceptable.

Richard Shanley THE story of the ‘hubris and greed’ of billionaire Sir Philip Green’s controversial rise to retail power is set to be turned into a TV drama. Mammoth Screen, the company behind Victoria and Poldark, has secured the rights to adapt a book covering the Arcadia Group boss’s business dealings. Damaged Goods: The Inside Story of Sir Philip Green, The Collapse of BHS and the Death of The High Street, written by Sunday Times business journalist Oliver Shah, was published in the summer. It follows the ascent of Sir Philip, who through Arcadia owns high street brands including Top Shop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins. The book came out a few months before the retail tycoon was named as the businessman behind an injunction against the Daily Telegraph. The newspaper had earlier

TV drama to tell story of Sir Philip Green’s rise to power reported that an unnamed businessman had been granted an injunction to prevent them revealing alleged sexual harassment and racial abuse of staff. Sir Philip previously made headlines during the collapse of British Home Stores (BHS), which was sold off for £1 in 2015, ultimately leading to thousands of job losses. The company’s boss, Damien Timmer, told Radio Times magazine: “Oliver’s book is an unparalleled account of the last 40 years of big business in this country. It’s the ultimate story of hubris and greed. We look forward to adapting this extraordinary book into a gripping and seminal drama for our times.” GREEDY GREEN: Sir Philip Green’s story will be turned into a TV drama.

I didn’t knock Christianity WHEN did I knock Christianity? I didn’t and I am one! Although I was disappointed to see the ‘God himself told the Christians themselves that homosexuality is an abomination’ card was played by Michael Hill (Letters, Issue 1470). He said a lot more too, Mike, but the majority of Christians don’t seem to apply those to their daily lives either. I also don’t believe any god would condemn anyone based on sexual persuasion! However, I am on the fence when it comes to the business’s decision and ultimate court findings and want to make it clear that I had no objection to Leapy’s opinion on that subject. On one hand I feel the positive discrimination being demonstrated in the UK goes too far the wrong way. However, I am not so sure I agree that someone should be refused something that would otherwise be available to them had it not been for their sex, sexuality, religion etc. My outrage was at the tone of the column, the name calling and reference to lunatics and militants for having views different to the columnist’s own. As for my reference to the civility of the UK, I hold my hands up as being inappropriate. Sure, there are things in Spain that I might not agree with, but I chose to make this country my home for all the positives this country also holds. Jamie Truby

LOOKING GOOD: David de Gea looks young for his age!
Keeping young for his age I JUST happened to notice that among the birthdays in edition 1739 was David de Gea the Manchester United goalkeeper. Apparently he was 90 years old on November 7 and I have to say that he does not look a day over 27!! Tax move welcome A DECISION from the Spanish government to make banks bear the costs of a controversial mortgage tax is a welcome end to a saga of contradictory decisions from the courts. The Supreme Court originally heard the case last month and decided first to make the banks pay the levy, overturning 20 years of legal precedent. That decision was reversed after the shares of Spanish banks tumbled on the stock market and customers were made to pay. The government stepped in, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez saying customers would ‘never again’ pay the charge. The government’s decision is a boost for borrowers and homeowners. It is also a positive move for the Spanish Treasury which has secured €2 billion a year from the levy as a result. The unwelcome part of the saga comes from it exposing the influence private capital and the financial industry has on Spain’s legal and political system. A court decision should, under the rule of law, be the final say on the matter. No less so than with the Supreme Court, the highest legal body in the land. The court’s earlier reversal showed financial institutions, which are not accountable to the Spanish people, enjoyed far too much influence over them. The government’s intervention is welcome because it means the people’s representatives were able to force powerful commercial interests to play by the rules.

His weekly views I am afraid are a reflection of the problems he regularly comments on in the UK. He fails to understand the UK like every other major country is now multicultural, his views are in a time warp from 50 years ago. He continually runs down what is happening in the UK and thinks everyone should be white and with the good old British bulldog spirit, while he never misses a week without a stab at Jeremy Corbyn and his ‘looney lefties’ as he calls them. SOUND WAVES: Measuring somebody’s pulse from their neck can predict damage in the brain.
Neck scans could predict Alzheimer’s disease A BRITISH study of more than 3,000 people has found that a five-minute scan could predict dementia, a decade be-
fore symptoms appear. Researchers at University College London claims that measuring somebody’s pulse from their neck can predict damage in the brain which causes problems with memory and thinking skills in old age. Data suggests those with the most intense pulse in this area, were around 50 per cent more likely to suffer rapid cognitive decline over the following 10 years.
The pulse of 3,191 people with an average age of 61, was measured using one of the large carotid arteries which supplies blood to the head and neck. An ultrasound recorded the sound waves that bounce off blood vessels. Over the next 15 years the participants were monitored to keep an eye on their memory and problem-solving skills. The quarter of participants
with the highest intensity pulse at the start of the study were around 50 per cent more likely to have accelerated cognitive decline. This meant falling within the 15 per cent of people with the most rapid drop in thinking abilities. If larger studies of more people are carried out, the neck scan could become a routine test which doctors give middle-aged people at risk of dementia.
Panic attacks WHILE it won’t stop panic attacks occurring, knowing what is happening to you physiologically and why, can help prevent it escalating. During an attack, you will often automatically take shal-
low, rapid breaths. Simple breathing exercises can help you to be conscious of filling your lungs, slowing your heart rate. Focus on relaxing your muscles. Progressive muscle relax-
ation (PMR), techniques such as visualisation and yoga, teach you to connect to sources of acute physical tension, so that you know where you need to focus on relaxing. During an attack, try to limit the stimuli you are experiencing. If possible find a dark, quiet space where you can practise your breathing and relaxation techniques. Avoid caffeine, a possible trigger, and drink water to avoid dehydration, another possible trigger. Combat external stressors by making the most of audio apps, such as guided meditation, or an audio book to ground you mentally and hold your focus.

plex problems’. Some are concerned that the flood of information leaves people no time for contemplation and deeper reflection. Others say that video games stimulate and strengthen parts of the brain, though the worry
is that such technology causes people to concentrate on the immediate, at the expense of the long-term. There is evidence for and against whether the Web shortens the attention span of individuals. One piece of re-
search showed that children who exceed a ‘two-hour per day limit’ on TV and video games, had attention problems in class. Others observed that while attention span may have diminished, it has not changed our way of thinking, and the shorter attention span may be just a special effect of using electronic technology. The advice is, with increasing availability of electronic media, the responsibility is on the individual to choose wisely as to how much time to spend online. There has always been resistance to new inventions leading to improved communication. The 15th century invention of printing, and more recently the telegraph, telephone and the postal service, all raised concerns, but the world has embraced and accommodated to such changes. Some say the Internet has not finished evolving yet, and forecasts that in the future,
people will learn to ‘disconnect’ from the Web. We ought not to be pessimistic about our capacity to understand the effects of the Internet on our brains. Three basic questions that intellectuals and social critics have posed are: 1) Is the Internet making us smarter or stupid? 2) Is it addictive? 3) Does it affect our attention span? Research from the University of Washington’s Information School is balanced, and states that the thesis regarding the nature of the impact of the Internet on us is far from resolved. Today, there is widespread concern over the misuse, of social media like Facebook and Twitter. There is also irrefutable evidence that the general public are manipulated into voting and purchasing behaviour on a massive scale, through unauthorised access to their personal details via the Internet. Currently, it is fair to say that there is no consensus as to how to proceed towards a resolution of these concerns.

TECH FOR THE TIMID THE quotation stopped me dead in my digital tracks: ‘The best sign of a healthy relationship, is no sign of it on Facebook’. I’d only just finished lowering my eyebrows over the findings of an American tech journalist. He discovered through diligent and dogged research, that Google knew everywhere he had been, even though ‘location’ was disabled on his phone. It knew how much he exercised, all of his interests, who his friends were, who he worked for, what he bought, that his daughter was pregnant (she hadn’t yet told him), and it still had every e-mail he had ever received or sent - even deleted ones. That’s just for starters. Privacy is the price we pay for our brave new digital world. Millennials worry less about this trade-off than the more fogeyish among us. Get over it pops, they say. So we must, like it or not. It’s either that these days, or go and live in a cave.

PRIVACY: How much are we sharing online? The secret to not lying awake at night worrying just how much Big Tech knows about you, is to redefine your whole concept of privacy. Privacy is essential when it keeps the bad guys out of your bank account. But it’s sadly outmoded now if we want to keep using those shiny new (free!) apps that insist on looting our contacts
lists, our browsing and location history and our shopping habits. Can you imagine the alternative: paying Google €10 or €20 a month to use its indispensable search engine? Going back to the penny-post to stay in touch with friends and family? Me neither. The downside to Big Tech knowing everything about you is when Big Tech gets hacked.
Some 145 million Americans discovered that rather starkly during the infamous Equifax credit rating agency breach a while back, and barely a week goes by now without news of another hack. Yes we should be able to control who knows what about us, but we’re not there yet, and young people in particular seem happier to pay the privacy price in exchange for the undoubted benefits of the digital world. Smart appliances and the socalled Internet of Things will only make it worse, as does every time we click ‘agree’ to give our consent. Privacy is now an illusion, says a former Amazon executive, and if you’re a privacy zealot you don’t stand a chance. That’s simply because what the KGB would have extracted from people under torture, we now knowingly and willingly publish on Facebook. Food for thought, but keep it to yourself.

Always use an alias where possible, never give your main e-mail address to the commercial world, and check carefully what you’re agreeing to before hitting that button. If you’re really concerned, under the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulations, or GDPR, you now have the right to ask Big Tech what data it holds on you. Vary your passwords, regularly clean out your browser history, and turn off ‘location’ on your phone except if you really need it. F i n a l l y, t r y n o t t o p o s t anything online you’d cringe to see when older and wiser. What goes on the net, stays on the net. Forever.

The straw that broke the camel’s back is I’ve just read that a 69-year-old man who now identifies as a 45-year-old has begun a legal battle to lower his age to help him pull women on Tinder. Emile Ratelband argues if transgender people are allowed to change their sex, he should be allowed to change his date of birth. The entrepreneur and self-help guru says doctors told him he has the body of a 45-yearold, and he’s suing his local authority in the Netherlands after they refused to amend his age on official documents. It’s nonsense. He’s taking the Mickey but who can blame him for trying. He reckoned if he’s 45 again he can get a mortgage and buy a new house and talks about other benefits. Society, governments and anyone else that is involved have got to stop all this ‘identifying.’ Take the case of the 62-year-old bloke - a convicted sex offender and paedophile who, after being sent to a men’s prison, told authorities he ‘identified’ as a woman. So the authorities moved him to a women’s prison where he
attacked and sexually assaulted four women. Are they bonkers? Other than changing his name and wearing wigs and women’s clothing, he made no effort to embark on gender reassignment. As I’ve said before, I don’t care if you are gay, straight, bi, asexual, trans or anything else. But, once you start using all ‘identifying’ stuff to hurt men, women and children, animals or plants you don’t have any rights or civil liberties and all the do-gooders and such can KMA. Lock ‘em up, throw away the key! Now, we all have printers. They used to be very expensive but now you can buy a hokey cokey 2000 all singing and dancing one for €50. Good price we all think when we buy them. How do they do it for the money, you ask? Well I’ll tell you how they do it. They rob you blind when you want to buy a new ink cartridge which, by the way seems to last a much shorter time than they used to when printers were €400-500. Did you know that printer ink, pro rata, is more expensive than gold in terms of weight? They charge over €40 for a multi pack of cartridges which is actually almost the price of the printer. Another absolute rip off! It reminds me of the old days when they used to almost give away razors but charge fortunes for the razor blades. IMPROVEMENT work on Velez-Rubio’s main road have now been completed. The works on Avenida de Andalucia involved reorganising traffic directions between the Zürich roundabout and the Puerta de San Nicolas and repairing areas of the road damaged by recent heavy rains. Avenida de Andalucia now has new curbing and areas where the road was uneven have been evened out. In addition new parking spaces and a service road have been created, and the road embankments have also been repaired where they had been eroded by water. They have been improved and measures taken to protect them from further erosion at the entrance to the town and on the cemetery access road with wire mesh and stone walling. The provincial government’s Public Works delegate, Oscar Liria, visited the road last week to see first-hand the results of the €440,000 investment in the works. Liria said the works “not only improved driver and pedestrian safety, but also made the entrance to the municipality more attractive.” The deputy also commented that the embankments which guarantee the good condition and easy traffic flow of the road

Snow ready WITH a view to making sure winter snows in the Los Velez area don’t leave roads impassable, the Andalucia government’s Development and Property delegation is carrying out works to increase the storage capacity of the salt warehouse in Chirivel. The warehouse currently has capacity to store approximately 200 to 220 tonnes of salt used for clearing roads. The works, which are costing just under €50,000, will double that amount, and are expected to be completed before the end of November. Junta de Andalucia Development and Property Delegate Juan Sola commented that following last year’s snowfall, “and the consequent consumption of salt which was necessary to eliminate the snow from the highways, it made it necessary to have stocked up abundant supplies of salt, especially taking into account that the salt mines which provide supplies are closed from 6pm on Fridays until 9am on Mondays, as well as on bank holidays.

IF you are continually wiping condensation off your windows and have a dehumidifier constantly running, you may want to think about ventilation as a permanent solution. But for a short term fix there are a number of things you can do. If you have a washing machine or tumble dryer, ensure it is vented correctly. From just one load of washing, two litres of water is emitted into the air. Where possible, dry clothes outdoors to prevent excess moisture from building up inside. right touch-sensitive ‘buttons.’ The chunky rear pillars extend into the doors, meaning there is no window where your head actually rests, only a thick chunk of black plastic. While there is plenty of leg room on offer, the boot could be a little bigger. The hybrid C-HR accelerates seamlessly and silently, and easily zips around corners. The steering is quick and responsive with lots of grip and neat body control,
Addison Lee seeks autonomy SELF-DRIVING cars could be on London’s streets within three years under a partnership between private hire firm Addison Lee, and British driverless car pioneers Oxbotica. The companies have signed a deal, to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles by 2021. Oxbotica will start mapping more than 250,000 miles of public roads in and around London from next month. While the link-up could eventually allow Addison Lee’s fleet of black Mercedes and Prius cabs to be driven autonomously, the 5,000 drivers in London will remain employed, says the firm.

Mercedes W123 series: An estate car for the ages MERCEDES-BENZ estate cars are widely seen as among the best luggagel o a d e r s y o u c a n b u y, o f fering a winning blend of practicality and comfort. It is now 40 years since Mercedes-Benz launched its first factory-built estate, on the platform of the long running - and highly regarded - W123 series. The saloon version made its debut in early 1976 and they have been engineered to behave exactly the same as the original model, even when fully laden or towing. The vehicles were built at a new production facility in Bremen, under the supervision of Mercedes staff from its headquarters in Stuttgart, so that the new model would be constructed to the same exacting standards as the rest of the range. As well as the new extended bodywork at the rear, alterations include a strengthened rear chassis and tailgate, along with
engine-driven, self-levelling hydraulic suspension at the back. Although these models would soon establish themselves as the most desirable estate cars in the world at the time, the demand was so great that Mercedes originally decided not to produce them in right-hand drive. Wi t h a s t r a i g h t - s i x cylinder, twin-cam engine developing 188bhp, the range-topping 280TE model had a top speed of nearly 130mph. Very few now survive in good original order or with low mileage. Because they were so sturdy, they were often used to carry large loads and were even used for semi-commercial purposes. H o w e v e r, r e s t o r a t i o n can be both punitively expensive and also very difficult, since many parts are no longer available and have to be custommade. The diesel-powered 300TD that John Lennon
ordered was not even available in the USA at the time, but the importer brought one in via the Mercedez-Benz diplomatic department for him. The cost was €26,400, which is around €80,000 a t t o d a y ’s p r i c e s , a n d i t was the last car he owned.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher VOLKSWAGEN’S fiveseater Tiguan SUV was an immediate success, so the German company has built on this strong market presence to create a larger seven-seat version, the Tiguan Allspace. In addition to its extra capacity, the Allspace has revised front-end styling to help distinguish it from its stablemate, and prices start at €33,811 (£29,515) for a well-specified entry version. There are petrol and diesel engines and three trim levels, and my test model was a mid-range SEL with seven-speed DGS auto gearbox and a 187hp 2.0-litre diesel engine. Laden with extra features, this version costs €43,601 (£38,060). The standard features list on this version runs to 69 items, so be assured it is well equipped! Atletico captain Godin was carrying an injury and ran away limping in celebration of his 91st minute header. Rodri had brought Diego Simeone’s side level 11 minutes earlier, cancelling out the second of Inaki Williams’ two goals for struggling Bilbao. The result moves Atletico one point behind leaders and defending champions Barcelona, while 17th placed Bilbao are only outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC says his return to world number one seems ‘unreal’ as he looks to cap a remarkable renaissance with victory at the ATP Finals in London. Djokovic, 31, is the heavy favourite to win the season for a sixth time, despite having dropped out of the world’s top 20 in May. The Serb returned from elbow surgery earlier this year to win both Wimbledon and the US Open, before reclaiming the world’s top ranking from the injured Rafael Nadal earlier this month. “It took a bit of time for me to find my confidence and level of tennis that I was looking for and working hard for,” he said. “It’s been an amazing season, everything seems a bit unreal to be honest.” Rafael Nadal is not playing the ATP Finals as he is having ankle surgery, as well as recuperating from an abdominal muscle injury. Nadal has retired from two of the three hard court events he has competed at this season - the Australian Open and the US Open - but won the other, the Rogers Cup. The Spaniard’s absence means 14-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will end the year as the world number one for the fifth time in his career: level with Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors, and one behind Pete Sampras.

The 20-year-old Argentine, who conceded two penalties against Wolves last weekend, headed home from close range in the 66th minute at Selhurst Park to secure a fourth win in a row in all competitions for Spurs. MANCHESTER CITY proved just too good for rivals Manchester United as they won 3-1 in Sunday’s derby at the Etihad Stadium. City dominated the early stages and took the lead through David Silva from eight yards, before Sergio Aguero’s fine strike from an acute angle just after the break put them in control. Anthony Martial’s penalty 10 minutes later got United back in contention, but the champions regained their two-goal advantage with four minutes remaining as substitute Ilkay Gundogan controlled superbly and slotted home from close range. The result means City go back to the top of the league, two points above Liverpool and four above Chelsea, while United languish in eighth, 12 points off the pace. Formula 1: Verstappen loses cool LEWIS HAMILTON claimed a fortunate win in the Brazilian Grand Prix after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen lost the lead in a collision with backmarker Esteban Ocon. Verstappen was on course for a superb win when Force India’s Ocon left his car on the inside of the Red Bull at the Senna S and forced it into a spin. The incident saw the Dutchman drop back to second place and although he came back at Hamilton, he could not quite catch him. A clearly furious Verstappen confronted Ocon in the driver
weighing area afterwards and reportedly pushed the Frenchman three times in his frustration. Both drivers were called to see the race stewards to explain the incident, and Verstappen has been ordered to carry out ‘two days of public service’ to atone for his behaviour. The punishment is similar to that served by Sebastian Vettel after his collision with Hamilton at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Priz, where he took part in educational activities organised by the FIA. Hamilton’s win helped Mercedes secure the constructor’s
championship, with Ferrari’s challenge fading. Verstappen looked on course for victory after surging through the field from fifth to second, before overtaking Hamilton on lap 39. However, on lap 44 Ocon, who was fresh from pitting for new tyres, clipped the Red Bull when trying to unlap himself. Verstappen’s right rear wheel caught Ocon’s left front as he turned into the corner, pitching him into a spin and into the runoff area. The Dutchman blasted ‘what an idiot’ into the radio.
