A MAN has denounced a car seller in Salobreña claiming the car he bought had been tampered with. Officers from the Guardia Civil in Salobreña are now investigating and have questioned a 43-year-old man who is said to have a criminal record. The suspect is accused of selling a car to his victim in May in Roquetas de Mar, Alme-
ria. His accuser says he bought the car for €15,000 before it developed a fault several days later and he took it to a garage. A mechanic there reportedly told him the kilometre counter had been tampered with, leading the man to take the car to an authorised dealer who allegedly confirmed this. Using this information, the man denounced the suspect to the Guardia Civil.

A PARAGLIDER has crash landed in Almuñecar. The as yet unnamed victim was forced to make an emergency landing on the town’s Velilla Promenade on Saturday. The incident took place at around 4.55pm, causing concern amongst onlookers

POLICE have brought down a gang of four men thought to be responsible for a series of violent robberies in Axarquia. Officers from the Guardia Civil arrested four Romanian men for allegedly carrying out 18 burglaries in rural parts of Nerja, Torrox and Algarrobo. The suspects have been handed over to the Judicial Authority and two have been remanded in custody. Officers from the Nerja Guardia Civil began investigating in an operation named ‘Cortijeros’ after receiving complaints of several robberies in the countryside. Last month, following police surveillance, officers identified and detained two alleged members of the group accused of taking part in six burglaries in Nerja and Frigiliana. Company to remove ‘cancer risk’ MOBILE phone company Orange has agreed to remove an antenna accused of causing cancer deaths in Torrox. The company agreed to take down the mobile phone tower following a court ruling a year ago. Oscar Medina, Torrox’s mayor, has given Orange until Monday to carry out the work. Last month it was revealed Mayor Medina had approved plans to remove the antenna accused of causing four deaths from cancer. The council initially believed its own workers would have to remove the antenna after Orange reportedly refused to comply with a court order, but it now appears Orange will take responsibility for the work themselves. Residents of the small neighbourhood between Torrox and El Morche campaigned for the removal of the antenna for 18 years, claiming it was ‘responsible’ for causing the cancer and

death of at least four people. The urbanisation of only 300 people say the antenna provided by Orange Spain SA has been making people ill. Torrox Council supported the campaign, resulting in a court case which saw Orange’s most recent appeal in December 2017 to keep the antenna, fail. Since last December’s ruling, Torrox Council had unsuccessfully pushed Orange to remove the structure, allowing the company extra time to find another place to install it to avoid signal coverage problems. Initially, the council be-
lieved it would have to use the ruling to access the privately-owned property where the antenna is located. At the time, Mayor Medina confirmed, “we are going to remove the antenna which was installed, using a provisional and precarious licence in the first term of the PSOE party, with Francisco Muñoz as mayor.” Orange will now reportedly take responsibility for the antenna removal itself. David Ruiz, a neighbourhood spokesman, expressed his ‘satisfaction’ at the result, adding that he hoped “the removal will finally be carried out.” Mr Ruiz explained there had ‘never ’ been studies into the radiation levels in the area and whether these could be linked to cancer, but the cancer mortality rate in the area was ‘very high.’

CLASSICALLY SPANISH: Tomorrow is the International Day of Flamenco. THIS mainstay of Spanish culture is set to be celebrated the world over tomorrow (Friday) on the International Day of Flamenco. The day is celebrated every November 16 and the United Nations’ UNESCO culture body has declared flamenco a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The UN’s status is granted to art forms and traditions in an effort to protect them and to encourage people to continue practising them.
Flamenco is now a professionalised art form, but it emerged out of various folk traditions in the regions of Andalucia, Extremadura and Murcia. Andalucia is believed to be its original home and the art is thought to have been influenced by Romani people. The origins of the name Flamenco are disputed, but some say it may come from the Spanish word flama, meaning fire. The art is made up of six separate
€18,000 rebate paid A BANK has been forced to repay €18,000 in charges to a business in Velez-Malaga. A court in Malaga has ruled Banco Popular must pay thousands of Euros to the unnamed company after it was found to have overcharged for its overdraft service. Judge Delfina Gomez Marchena found Banco Popular had levied ‘abusive’ charges against the business for returning unpaid bills. Judge Gomez explained these charges were made, “unduly and unjustifiably because it is
double the money for the service offered.” The lawyer handling the case, Lorena Toldeo Garcia of LTG Abogados, said the bank had been charging her clients 6 per cent of any amount unpaid in commission. She claimed it was, “a commission that should never be charged because it is not a service provided by the financial institution.” The judge agreed, finding, “commissions and expenses charged to a customer must respond to services actually provided or expenses incurred.”

Top spot for hotels NERJA leads the way for hotel revenue in Andalucia. A hotel occupancy survey by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has announced the Axarquia town joined Marbella in achieving top rates for its hotel rooms last summer. Accommodation on Nerja’s Balcon de Europa achieved an average price of €123 in September, while rooms on Marbella’s Golden Mile went for just under €112. Both towns were beaten to top position by

Poppy appeal is a success VOLUNTEERS from the Royal British Legion have thanked businesses who helped with this year’s poppy appeal. Dorothy Allen, who has been volunteering at the charity’s Nerja branch for more than six years, presented pennants to restaurants in Torrox Park and Torrox Costa, thanking them for their support. Mrs Allen presented a commemorative flag to PJ Cullen, manager of La Tabla restaurant in Torrox Park, as well as to Hayley Page, manager of Lew’s restaurant on Torrox Costa. The Nerja Royal British Legion branch marked the Centenary of the end of the First World War with two fundraising events. The first was the Nerja and Los Romanes Poppy Ball at the Nerja Caves restaurant, offering a drinks reception and three-course meal followed by music by band The Flying Dolphins and singer Laura Elen. A remembrance service followed on Sunday with music by the Remembrance Choir and a lunch at the Nerja Caves restaurant.
€13m funding boost YOUR LOCAL POLITICIANS in Malaga have announced they have invested millions of Euros in Axarquia. Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, the head of political party PSOE in the Junta de Andalucia, announced his party, “has secured funding for the municipalities of Axarquia of more than €13 million, which has been fundamental for the maintenance of public services.” At a meeting with local PSOE leaders and representatives in La Viñuela, Espejo explained, “through the Autonomous Community taxation, Andaucia has guaranteed unconditional funds so
that municipalities can have funding and assure basic and fundamental services.” He confirmed €6.8 million had gone towards employment, while €230,000 had gone to maintain services in rural parts of La Viñuela. Jose Juan Jimenez, the local Rural, Farming and Fishing Secretary, added “areas like Viñuela depend on 100 per cent of their aid from other administrations, we have few resources. That is why we appreciate the decisive commitment that the Andalucian executive has made to understand the population in rural areas is important.”
Two die in crossing TWO immigrants have died while crossing the Alboran Sea from North Africa to Spain. A boat of 15 Maghrebi migrants arrived at Chilches beach in Velez-Malaga at around 2.30pm on Saturday. Two on board had lost their lives before reaching Spain. Police confirmed 11 of the remaining migrants ran away as soon as they reached shore, while another person was found by police in the area by the shore. One child from the boat was found waiting near the beach and was found to be suffering

shore, eventually locating eight people. Six were taken to the National Police office in Torre del Mar, two of whom were later transferred to the Torremolinos Juvenile Centre as they were children. Two other people were taken to hospital. Police continue to search for five migrants still missing. A Marbella couple who first helped the immigrants as they arrived at the beach told one publication, “when they touched land they threw themselves on the shore and they were falling over, so ill they could not even walk.”

Health centre delay goes on A DISPUTE over land ownership is delaying plans to build a new health centre in Nerja. The town council has announced it is trying to register a plot of land in its name before building works can begin. This plot is the fourth chosen for the centre since plans for a health clinic were approved more than 15 years ago. Failure to agree a site for the building has caused infighting between the PSOE and Partido Popular (PP) parties. PSOE Councillor Jose Maria Rivas faced criticism for failing ‘to provide the documentation sent by the council to the Junta de Andalucia supposedly requesting a new location for the project.’ Mr Rivas countered that the previous governing team had also been, ‘invited to submit all documentation,”‘but had not. Earlier this year it was claimed the Junta, which is funding 50 per cent of the project, was still not committed to a health centre. Ana Isabel Gonzalez, Delegate for Health from the Junta, explained, “we hope that money can be put aside in the 2019 budgets once the functional plan has been sent to the Ministry in Sevilla and approved.”

Cleaning house POLICE: Confiscated 381 cannabis plants.
Arrest made in labs raid POLICE have brought down four marihuana laboratories in VelezMalaga. Officers from the National Police have also arrested a 28-yearold man and 21-year-old woman accused of growing the drug. Police began investigating after receiving information about two houses in the Pueblo Nuevo neighbourhood, where people were allegedly growing marihuana.
On approaching the houses, officers found a strong smell of marihuana and several extractor fans. They later found that a young couple were in charge of the two houses, which each contained two laboratories. Police arrested the pair for crimes against public health, and for illegally connecting to the electricity network. They also reportedly confiscated 381 cannabis plants.

Mystery shots fired WORKERS at a cafe in Motril reported hearing shots fired on Monday evening. The employees told police they heard four shots fired at around 6.30pm near the Cuartel de Simancas area. One worker reportedly went outside to investigate, finding a used cartridge which was later handed over to police. Police said one of the shots hit a parked car and another struck a shop window frame. Officers from the National Police are now investigating the incident, but said they have not yet identified who fired the shots or why.

Passion for Lux Mundi fashion LUX MUNDI Torre del Mar has held its Autumn Fashion Show. The event saw 99 international guests greeted with a free drink after which they were shown 71 outfits of new and nearly-new clothing and accessories. The outfits were modelled by eight international friends of the Centre. The show, set to background music, was compered by Rob Bell. Oasis hair salon came to style the models’ hair and the photographer was Alan Hartley. During the interval, the audience was able to purchase drinks and home-made cakes. At the end of the show, Rob thanked all those friends who had helped with the coffee bar, sound system and boutique. The organisers, models and audience were later thanked for making the event possible. Finally, there was time for a group photograph, after which the audience was able to purchase the items which had been shown. Due to the success of the event, the

€72,000 vandalism bill VELEZ-MALAGA Council has been forced to spend tens of thousands of Euros replacing property damaged by vandals. The town hall has called on residents to help crack down on anti-social behaviour after it emerged four hooded people had burned down two recycling containers, on the intersection of Calle Arroyo Hondo and Calle Camino Viejo. The fire later spread to two parked cars, causing further damage. The town’s mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, has met with officers from Local and National Police asking them to investigate the crime. Marcelino Mendez-Trelles, councillor for the Environment, explained they were, ‘analysing a possible recording from a security camera located in the area of the Fernandez Olmo shop, to identify the four hooded individuals responsible for the unfortunate events.’
Mayor Moreno Ferrer explained 68 bins had been burnt down so far this year in VelezMalaga, 24 belonging to the council and contained organic waste, while the rest contained glass, cardboard and packaging and were managed by the provincial waste consortium. Councillor Mendez-Trelles said the cost of replacing the containers had reached €72,000, €19,200 of which was spent replacing council bins, and €52,800 of which went towards replacing containers belonging to the consortium. He called on residents to report these incidents to the council, as ‘this is money we all pay. In addition, we must add in the cost of bringing in firefighters and cleaning the affected area.’ Councillor Mendez-Trelles added the fires also posed a danger to the public.

Beach patrol A GROUP of volunteers is organising a clean-up of Cantarrijan Beach, La Herradura, on Sunday, November 25. The Beach Patrol Community Beach Clean-Up will take place at 10.30am to 12.30pm following the success of its first event in mid-October which attracted 350 volunteers, who cleaned up over 24,000 cigarette butts, along with other plastic and garbage. Ann Jenkins, founder of Playa Patrol, said, “it’s obvious that residents, expats and visitors to La Herradura are passionate about finding ways to keep our beach plastic free, so we decided to organise another beach clean-up right away.’ She added, “after talking with the Association of Friends of the Nude Beach of Cantarrijan (AAPNC), we decided to work together to tackle Beach Clean-Up at Playa Cantarrijan now that the summer season is over.” According to Jesus Segarra, President of AAPNC, “beach clean-up campaigns such as this one by Playa Patrol, help raise awareness with residents, tourists and politicians about the dangers of plastic and garbage on our beaches. “When we all work together as a community, we can take action towards preserving our beaches.” Ann Jenkins added, “this will be the first time that one of our teams will be dedicated to cataloguing the cigarettes,

Lower tax A GROUP of politicians is campaigning to lower property tax in 2019. The Partido Popular (PP) in Velez-Malaga is asking the council’s governing coalition of four parties to lower IBI (property tax) next year from 0.7 per cent of a property’s value to 0.65 per cent. Councillor Manuel Gutierrez said the tax rate was, “among the highest in Spain.”

New residency requirements LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. While there are new rules for British nationals applying for residency in Spain, there will be no change to the right and status of EU nationals living in the UK, nor UK nationals living in the EU, while the UK remains in the EU. Banks get stamped SPAIN will hold banks, rather than customers, responsible for paying mortgage stamp duty, thwarting a recent court ruling that home buyers should pay the tax. The announcement caps a turbulent few weeks in Spain’s banking sector in which the country’s Supreme Court ordered in mid-October that lenders should cover the costs, changing more than 20 years of jurisprudence. THE European Commission has decided to put on hold its referral of Spain to the European Court of Justice for failing to implement its regulations on financial markets. Brussels has said that it accepts the Royal Decree which was approved by the Spanish government in October, which has moved to address previous shortcomings. However, the Commission has warned that if the measures set out in the Royal Decree are not adhered to in relation to supervision of credit institutions and in-
vestment firms, it will consider going through with legal action. Other issues the EU expects Spain to address this month include licensing, supervisory cooperation, risk management, corporate governance and capital buffers. These all form part of the EU’s Capital Requirements Directive, and its full adoption is compulsory. Further legislation expected in December from the Spanish government will focus on the solvency of credit institutions, and stock markets.

Telefonica sells Antares THE Catalana Occidente group has reached an agreement with Telefonica for the acquisition of the insurer Antares for a total of €161 million, according to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). The Catalan insurer will continue to manage the group policies of the Telefonica Group for the next 10 years, and will integrate Antares employees into its workforce. Telefonica has said that the sale is a piece of ‘non-
strategic business for the company’ which will generate an approximate capital gain of €90 million and a reduction of net financial close to €30 million. Antares offers a range of services including health insurance, accident and life insurance, and life savings protection in Spain up to €200,000. It was set up in 1987 and in 2011 began its expansion outside of Telefonica, providing services to other clients and companies.

Vodafone to slim down operations RESPONDING to challenging conditions in Spain and Italy, Vodafone’s new Chief Executive Nick Read said he would reduce operating costs b y € 1 . 2 b i l l i o n b y 2021. Clothing giant gets changed SPANISH clothing giant Inditex, the owner of the Zara, Bershka and Massimo Dutti brands, has moved to close the Irish-based unit that handled a large chunk of its online sales until earlier this year. Inditex, considered one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, has come under fire in recent years for what has been described as ‘aggressive’ tax avoidance measures. A report produced by Green party lawmakers in the European parliament in 2016 suggested that the
firm had saved about €30 million in taxes between 2011 and 2014 by basing its ITX Fashion subsidiary in Ireland rather than Spain, where its headquarters are. Ireland’s corporate tax rate is 12.5 per cent, while companies can pay as much as 24 per cent in Spain. Documents filed in Ireland’s companies office in February indicated that Inditex was looking to wind down ITX Fashion as part of a global restructuring. On November 7 the subsidiary filed a voluntary request to be struck off the companies register. The 2016 Green party report suggested that the company has avoided more than €580 million in taxes by using entities based in Ireland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Diversity - Bah, humbug!
IS there such a thing as a diversity biscuit? If so, this year’s deluge of TV commercial Christmas-tide claptrap truly does take the full tin. A whole conglomeration of adverts has been sanitised by political correctness, dissected with diversity, mugged by multiculturism and treated to a positive blizzard of ‘snowflaking’ that is utterly mind-boggling. Mixed marriages and relationships abound. Bunches of people in cars, restaurants and crowd locations, all containing the ‘correct’ number of ethnic minorities. Happy families of carefully selected denominations gather around tables, groaning with Christmas fare, and all is well with the world on the birthday of our Lord. Ha! Unfortunately, this so called ‘merry’ conception is in no way a true reflection of British society. The great cities and communities of the UK are more segregated than ever. Whole boroughs are dedicated to one particular race or religion. A vast majority don’t even celebrate Christmas. Diversity is not working. It’s a lie, pure and simple. A pipe dream as dangerous as it is degenerate. Until we face up to the truth, we will NEVER find the Shangri-La of existence so desperately depicted by these sadly delusional ostriches, who are in utter denial of the true state of affairs and seem to worm their way into every nook and cranny of our beleaguered social existence... talking of whom.
DIVERSITY: Does it really exist? It did strike me that the gatherings of those responsible for these ads must produce some of the most racial, riddled, confusing, mish-mash of problems imaginable. Terrified of being declared non-PC, the selection committees or casting agents, are no longer torn between those who may have more talent and be better qualified for
the gig, but more importantly are judged by their ethnic background and appearance. Try to imagine a large modern casting agency. The room is full of selectors choosing artists to appear in up-and-coming TV commercials, all bartering and shouting to each other, rather like the stock exchange floor.
‘I need a brown male adult over here’. ‘I can give you two mixed teens for it’. ‘No? what about a female ginger?’ ‘Are you kidding? gingers are at a premium, one ginger for at least two blacks and a brown’. ‘I’ve got two indiscernible.’ -Voice across the room - ‘I need two green-eyed white adults, one teen brown and an off-white baby. What ya got in exchange?’ ‘Two mixed balds and an adult blonde brown’. ‘No chance.’ ‘Hey what about a black and white dog?’ (Look out for that one around the table!) ‘Can anyone find me a mixed-race parsnip and a yellow carrot?’ Arghh! The whole thing has become utterly ridiculous. Nothing more than a pathetic attempt to fool the viewing public that good old diversity is truly working and we are all living the paradise of goodwill and human understanding. Well I’m sorry, I maintain that truth in these matters, however hard it is to bear, is the only pathway to peaceful resolution. For those who would rather not hear the truth, I leave you with an ominous reflection of the great George Orwell, who wrote: ‘The further society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it’! I’d only just finished lowering my eyebrows over the findings of an American tech journalist. He discovered through diligent and dogged research, that Google knew everywhere he had been, even though ‘location’ was disabled on his phone. It knew how much he exercised, all of his interests, who his friends were, who he worked for, what he bought, that his daughter was pregnant (she hadn’t yet told him), and it still had every e-mail he had ever received or sent - even deleted ones. That’s just for starters. Privacy is the price we pay for our brave new digital world. Millenn i a l s wo r r y l e s s a b o u t th is trade-off than the more fogeyish among us. Get over it pops, they say. So we must, like it or not. It’s either that these days, or go and live in a cave.

location history and our shopping habits. Can you imagine the alternative: paying Google €10 or €20 a month to use its indispensable search engine? Yes we should be able to control who knows what about us, but w e’ r e not t her e yet , and young people in particular seem happier to pay the privacy price in exchange for the undoubted benefits of the digital world. Smart appliances and the socalled Internet of Things will only make it worse, as does every time we click ‘agree’ to give our consent. Privacy i s now an i l l usi on, says a former Amazon executive, and if you’re a privacy zealot you don’t stand a chance. That’s simply because what the KGB would have extracted from people under torture, we now knowi ngl y and wi l l i ngl y publish on Facebook. Food for thought, but keep it to yourself.
Naked on the net AS privacy takes a beating, the best one can do is never tell people more than they need to know about you. Always use an alias where possible, never give your main e-mail address to the commercial world, and check carefully what you’re agreeing to before hitting that button. If you’re really concerned, under the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulations, or GDPR, you now have the right to ask Big Tech what data it holds on you. Vary your passwords, regularly clean out your browser history, and turn off ‘location’ on your phone except if you really need it. F i n a l l y, t r y n o t t o p o s t anything online you’d cringe to see when older and wiser. What goes on the net, stays on the net. Forever.

STOKE HIGH SCHOOL in Ipswich reported concerns to the Home Office that a pupil claiming to be 15 might be much older, when classmates posted a photo of him on social media with the caption: ‘How’s there a 30-year-old man in our maths class?’ Images were shared online of a Facebook picture of a man with a beard, alleging it was the ‘pupil’. The problem is, those doing age assessments for refugees, have to operate within rules to ensure fairness. Decisions can be neither arbirtary nor inconsistent. It’s a problem not unique to the UK. In some countries, medical evidence is gathered to reach a decision (A case in Sweden where a refugee who claimed to be a minor, was reckoned by dentists to be 38), but the British medical establishment isn’t happy to use such information for non-medical purposes. The 6ft 1in ‘pupil’ told classmates he needed GCSEs, as qualifications from his country may not be recognised in the UK. This is often the case at all different levels in the belief that ‘foreign’ qualifications won’t be acceptable.

OK so why didn’t he go to a FE college, more geared to adult students? like Suffolk New College, which has over 3,000 students aged 16+. Parents of 15-year-old daughters in the same class could be concerned, as he reportedly bombarded a female classmate with texts. Throw away the key! Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man OK, stop it now. I’ve had enough of this ‘identifying’ nonsense! The straw that broke the camel’s back is I’ve just read that a 69-year-old man who now identifies as a 45-year-old has begun a legal battle to lower his age to help him pull women on Tinder. Emile Ratelband argues if transgender people are allowed to change their sex, he should be allowed to change his date of birth. The entrepreneur and self-help guru says doctors told him he has the body of a 45-yearold, and he’s suing his local authority in the Netherlands after they refused to amend his age on official documents. It’s nonsense. He’s taking the Mickey but who can blame him for trying. He reckoned if he’s 45 again he can get a mortgage and buy a new house and talks about other benefits. Society, governments and anyone else that is involved have got to stop all this ‘identifying.’ Take the case of the 62-year-old bloke - a convicted sex offender and paedophile who, after being sent to a men’s prison, told authorities he ‘identified’ as a woman. So the authorities moved him to a women’s prison where he
attacked and sexually assaulted four women. Are they bonkers? Other than changing his name and wearing wigs and women’s clothing, he made no effort to embark on gender reassignment. As I’ve said before, I don’t care if you are gay, straight, bi, asexual, trans or anything else. But, once you start using all ‘identifying’ stuff to hurt men, women and children, animals or plants you don’t have any rights or civil liberties and all the do-gooders and such can KMA. Lock ‘em up, throw away the key! Now, we all have printers. They used to be very expensive but now you can buy a hokey cokey 2000 all singing and dancing one for €50. Good price we all think when we buy them. How do they do it for the money, you ask? Well I’ll tell you how they do it. They rob you blind when you want to buy a new ink cartridge which, by the way seems to last a much shorter time than they used to when printers were €400-500. Did you know that printer ink, pro rata, is more expensive than gold in terms of weight? They charge over €40 for a multi pack of cartridges which is actually almost the price of the printer. Another absolute rip off! It reminds me of the old days when they used to almost give away razors but charge fortunes for the razor blades. Richard Shanley THE story of the ‘hubris and greed’ of billionaire Sir Philip Green’s controversial rise to retail power is set to be turned into a TV drama. Mammoth Screen, the company behind Victoria and Poldark, has secured the rights to adapt a book covering the Arcadia Group boss’s business dealings. Damaged Goods: The Inside Story of Sir Philip Green, The Collapse of BHS and the Death of The High Street, written by Sunday Times business journalist Oliver Shah, was published in the summer. It follows the ascent of Sir Philip, who through Arcadia owns high street brands including Top Shop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins. The book came out a few months before the retail tycoon was named as the businessman behind an injunction against the Daily Telegraph. The newspaper had earlier reported that an unnamed businessman had been granted an injunction to prevent them revealing alleged sexual ha-

SOUND WAVES: Measuring somebody’s pulse from their neck can predict damage in the brain.
Neck scans could predict Alzheimer’s disease A BRITISH study of more than 3,000 people has found that a five-minute scan could predict dementia, a decade before symptoms appear. Researchers at University College London claims that measuring somebody’s pulse from their neck can predict damage in the brain which causes problems with memory and thinking skills in old age. Data suggests those with the most intense pulse in this area, were around 50
per cent more likely to suffer rapid cognitive decline over the following 10 years. The pulse of 3,191 people with an average age of 61, was measured using one of the large carotid arteries which supplies blood to the head and neck. An ultrasound recorded the sound waves that bounce off blood vessels. Over the next 15 years the participants were monitored to keep an eye on their memory and problem-solving
skills. The quarter of participants with the highest intensity pulse at the start of the study were around 50 per cent more likely to have accelerated cognitive decline. This meant falling within the 15 per cent of people with the most rapid drop in thinking abilities. If larger studies of more people are carried out, the neck scan could become a routine test which doctors give middle-aged people at risk of dementia.

I didn’t knock Christianity WHEN did I knock Christianity? I didn’t and I am one! Although I was disappointed to see the ‘God himself told the Christians themselves that homosexuality is an abomination’ card was played by Michael Hill (Letters, Issue 1470). He said a lot more too, Mike, but the majority of Christians don’t seem to apply those to their daily lives either. I also don’t believe any god would condemn anyone based on sexual persuasion! However, I am on the fence when it comes to the business’s decision and ultimate court findings and want to make it clear that I had no objection to Leapy’s opinion on that subject. On one hand I feel the positive discrimination being demonstrated in the UK goes too far the wrong way. However, I am not so sure I agree that someone should be refused something that would otherwise be available to them had it not been for their sex, sexuality, religion etc. My outrage was at the tone of the column, the name calling and reference to lunatics and militants for having views different to the columnist’s own. As for my reference to the civility of the UK, I hold my hands up as being inappropriate. Sure, there are things in Spain that I might not agree with, but I chose to make this country my home for all the positives this country also holds. Jamie Truby

Tax move welcome A DECISION from the Spanish government to make banks bear the costs of a controversial mortgage tax is a welcome end to a saga of contradictory decisions from the courts. The Supreme Court originally heard the case last month and decided first to make the banks pay the levy, overturning 20 years of legal precedent. That decision was reversed after the shares of Spanish banks tumbled on the stock market and customers were made to pay. The government stepped in, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez saying customers would ‘never again’ pay the charge. The government’s decision is a boost for borrowers and homeowners. It is also a positive move for the Spanish Treasury which has secured €2 billion a year from the levy as a result. The unwelcome part of the saga comes from it exposing the influence private capital and the financial industry has on Spain’s legal and political system. A court decision should, under the rule of law, be the final say on the matter. No less so than with the Supreme Court, the highest legal body in the land. The court’s earlier reversal showed financial institutions, which are not accountable to the Spanish people, enjoyed far too much influence over them. The government’s intervention is welcome because it means the people’s representatives were able to force powerful commercial interests to play by the rules.

IF you are continually wiping condensation off your windows and have a dehumidifier constantly running, you may want to think about ventilation as a permanent solution. But for a short term fix there are a number of things you can do. If you have a washing machine or tumble dryer, ensure it is vented correctly. From just one load of washing, two litres of water is emitted into the air. Where possible, dry clothes outdoors to prevent excess moisture from building up inside. If this isn’t an option, keep them in a bathroom with the door closed, and windows open until the clothes are fully dry. When cooking food, boiling the kettle or taking a shower, ensure your kitchen or bathroom door is kept closed to prevent the moisture in the air from going into colder rooms, which will cause condensation to form.
Ensure you cover pans with a lid to reduce moisture being created from the water boiling. Use an extractor hood or extractor fan if you have one, as they help to reduce moisture when cooking. Don’t turn them off as soon as you have finished, instead leave on afterwards for 10-15 minutes to help to clear the humid air. If you don’t have extractor fans, make sure you wipe down any cold surfaces when you have been cooking or taking a shower, to remove any moisture which may have settled on the surface. The excess moisture in the air sits on the surface and will quickly turn to mould if left untreated. Try not to overfill your wardrobes or kitchen cupboards. A lack of ventilation and air moisture trapped in warm overfilled cupboards c a n be c ome a bre e ding ground for mould, as the air is not a ble to c irc ula te
freely inside. You may notice a musty smell or clothes might feel damp, which is a sure sign the cupboard is overfilled. For the same reason, keep your furniture at least 50mm away from walls, so air can circulate around the property. Ensuring an adequate amount of heating in your property will improve the internal temperature of surfaces in the house and reduce the likelihood of condensation.
Make sure your home is energy efficient, by ensuring you have insulated walls and double-glazed windows installed, so that heat doesn’t escape. Double glazing, loft insulation and draught proofing will also help to reduce the amount of heat which is lost from a property. Installing insulation will help to keep the temperature of the surfaces inside your property at a higher level.

Big and butch TOYOTA’S C-HR Hybrid certainly catches the eye, and is far more visually striking than most SUVs. The C-HR looks the way it does because it’s designed to appeal to bright young things who might need or want a small SUV with a modicum of practicality, but aren’t yet ready to blend in. The C-HR’s quirkiness continues inside, where a swooping dashboard sits beneath a leather-effect soft-touch pad and houses a well placed, solid-feeling switchgear. Elsewhere you’ll find enormous cup holders, tracts of glossy piano-black plastic and, on the door trims, some curious three-dimensional diamond-effect patterns which seem to be designed to ape the quilted inserts found on pricier cars. These look and feel more like petrified

crocodile skin, but they’re in keeping with the quirky feel of the C-HR and make a refreshing change from the usual fabric or faux-leather swatches. The infotainment system is a little fiddly, and you have to take your eyes off the road to make sure you’ve pressed the
right touch-sensitive ‘buttons.’ The chunky rear pillars extend into the doors, meaning there is no window where your head actually rests, only a thick chunk of black plastic. While there is plenty of leg room on offer, the boot could be a little bigger.
Mercedes W123 series MERCEDES-BENZ estate cars are widely seen as among the best luggage-loaders you can buy, offering a winning blend of practicality and comfort. It is now 40 years since Mercedes-Benz launched its first factory-built estate, on the platform of the long running - and highly regarded - W123 series. The saloon version made its debut in early 1976 and they have been engineered to behave exactly the same as the original model, even when fully laden or towing. The vehicles were built at a new production facility in Bremen, under the supervision of Mercedes staff from its headquarters in Stuttgart, so that the new model would be constructed to the same exacting standards as the rest of the range. As well as the new extended bodywork at the rear, alterations include a strengthened rear chassis and tailgate, along with engine-driven, self-levelling hydraulic suspension at the back. Although these models established themselves as the

most desirable estate cars in the world at the time, the demand was so great that Mercedes originally decided not to produce them in right-hand drive. With a straight-six-cylinder, twin-cam engine developing 188bhp, the range-topping
280TE model had a top speed of nearly 130mph. Very few now survive in good original order or with low mileage. Because they were so sturdy, they were often used to carry large loads and even for semi-commercial purposes.
The hybrid C-HR accelerates seamlessly and silently, and easily zips around corners. The steering is quick and responsive with lots of grip and neat body control, and the vehicle feels lively even in everyday driving. The ride is on the firm side, but it doesn’t crash or shudder through potholes. Unless you spend a lot of time in town, where the hybrid’s ability to lean heavily on its electric motor cuts fuel economy drastically, go for the 1.2-litre petrol engine and manual gearbox. Overall, if you’re after a high-rise hatchback that stands out from the norm, the C-HR is well worth a test- drive.
Addison Lee seeks autonomy SELF-DRIVING cars could be on London’s streets within three years under a partnership between private hire firm Addison Lee, and British driverless car pioneers Oxbotica. The companies have signed a deal, to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles by 2021. Oxbotica will start mapping more than 250,000 miles of public roads in and around London from next month. While the link-up could eventually allow Addison Lee’s fleet of black Mercedes and Prius cabs to be driven autonomously, the 5,000 drivers in London will remain employed, says the firm.

Tour Salamanca FABULOUS week.’ ‘An amazing experience.’ ‘Stunning Hotels and Restaurants.’ ‘Incredible scenery.’ ‘So well organised’… These are just a few of the comments heard at the end of the ‘Drive Andalucia’ 2018 ‘Tour Salamanca.’ After one full week away, participants arrived at the beautiful Molino del Santo last Sunday for the final lunch and gettogether to celebrate a most amazing week. It seemed such a long time since the route for this Tour departed from Malaga. And yet, the week had flown by. It seemed that, immediately the first cars pulled out of Venta Carlos del Mirador on the A7000 just above Malaga, that the week was over and cars were pulling in to the specially arranged finish lunch in Benaojan, near Ronda. Yet that week had been packed with fun and adventure! Twenty-one crews had gathered a week earlier to begin the first day of the seven-day Tour by heading north out of Malaga and crossing the Montes de Malaga, through Colmenar and on to the the first coffee stop at the famous Alfarnate Inn. This super place was once used as a night-stop by sheriffs, taking their prisoners to and from Granada to the courts there. The Inn, probably the oldest in Andalucia, still has its own ‘calaboose,’ or jail, used to hold prisoners whilst the sheriff ate and slept, and there were one or two suggestions for likely occupants this day… From here the beautiful, traffic-free route went through seemingly endless olive groves to reach the Parador in Cordoba where a cocktail party, canapés and a ‘Black Tie’ dinner was a great way for crews to unwind and get to know some of their fellow participants. Day two dawned in beautiful sunshine and a long but, again, beautiful route took the intrepid crews cross-country to the old

city of Caceres, on the edge of Extremadura. Here many explored the city, finding some excellent watering holes and eating places before retiring to a stunning old reformed palace that is now in the ‘Hospes’ chain of hotels. Day three dawned wet, but a fabulous 350km cross-country route took crews eventually to the gorgeous, historic city of Salamanca. The beautiful, restored Palacio de san Esteban, right in the heart of the city, was to be home for two nights for everyone, allowing time for exploring, sightseeing, a visit to the famous Salamanca Automobile Museum and a chance to try some truly first-class restaurants. Although this was a very wet day, no spirits were dampened and most of the crews gathered in the mountain village of La Alberca to take a most enjoy-
able lunch before heading off for the final 70km blast into Salamanca where all cars were parked on display right in front of the historic hotel, also in the Hospes chain. Day four was designated a ‘rest’ day but most everyone kept busy and enjoyed the city and some of its truly superb restaurants. By Day five, the sunshine had returned and, although it was rather ‘fresh,’ the cars set off to Avila for a coffee stop and a chance to see this lovely mediaeval, walled city. After that, a fabulous drive over the mountains and a brief look at the historic monastery in Yuste, en route for a night stop in the fabulous Parador in Plasencia. Here the hotel is cut into the city walls and a small lift usually takes cars, one at a time, to its car park. Luckily, organisers Ian and Carol Giles had
arranged secure parking at the front of the hotel where the local townsfolk enjoyed looking at, and photographing, the wonderful array of cars from 1965 onwards. Porsche, Jaguar, Bentley, Mercedes, MG and Triumph were all well represented! Here a magnificent dinner was enjoyed by all in a fabulous ancient dining hall before most retired to one of the most spectacular bars imaginable set in one of the lower floors of this truly remarkable and very old historic building. A real treat and all included in their entry fee! Day six and the temperatures were returning to something more like that we are used to on the Costa del Sol. This was a long but easy day, around 370kms of fast, effortless dri-
ving enjoyed by all. Coffee stops and light lunches were enjoyed and crews rolled into the lovely little town of Aracena, in Huelva Province, about 75 kilometres north west of Sevilla. Here the last night dinner and party in the beautiful restored convento got in full swing, bolstered by one crew member enjoying her 60th birthday celebrations as part of the evening. Every participant of the event signed her Roadbook instead of buying a birthday card, something she was delighted with! Day seven was a relaxed affair, with only about 220kms to go, crossing the huge bridge in
Sevilla before heading for Utrera and then Ronda, passing the stunning lakes of Zahara and Grazalema on the way, and then in to Benaojan to enjoy a marvellous finish lunch. Every car made it to the finish, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and quite a few new friendships were made along the way. The only question on most lips was ‘Where and when will be the next one…?’ That’s it from me until our next issue.

Real revival continues REAL MADRID narrowed the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona to four points with a hardfought 4-2 victory at Celta Vigo. Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead with an expert finish from Luka Modric’s pass. After the break Benzema’s shot hit the post and went in off defender Gustavo Cabral to put Real 20 up, but Celta’s Hugo Mallo scored with a smart volley. Sergio Ramos chipped in a penalty and Dani Ceballos smashed home in stoppage time after Cabral’s sending off, with Brais Mendez adding a late consolation. It was Real’s fourth straight win under caretaker manager Santiago Solari, who was put in charge when Julen Lopetegui was sacked after the El Classico humiliation. Los Blancos will next travel to Eibar after the international break, while Celta Vigo will face Real Sociedad. Barcelona lost a home league match for the first time in two years as the Spanish champions were beaten by an inspired Real Betis display at the Nou Camp. NOVAK DJOKOVIC says his return to world number one seems ‘unreal’ as he looks to cap a remarkable renaissance with victory at the ATP Finals in London. Djokovic, 31, is the heavy favourite to win the season for a sixth time, despite having dropped out of the world’s top 20 in May. The Serb returned from elbow surgery earlier this year to win both Wimbledon and the US Open, before reclaiming the world’s top ranking from the injured Rafael Nadal earlier this month. “It took a bit of time for me to find my confidence and level of tennis that I was looking for and working hard for,” he said. “It’s been an amazing season, everything seems a bit unreal to be honest.” Rafael Nadal is not playing the ATP Finals as he is having ankle surgery, as well as recuperating from an abdominal muscle injury. Nadal has retired from two of the three hard court events he has competed at this season - the Australian Open and the US Open - but won the other, the Rogers Cup. Verstappen looked on course for victory after surging through the field from fifth to second, before overtaking Hamilton on lap 39. However, on lap 44 Ocon, who was fresh from pitting for new tyres, clipped the Red Bull when trying to unlap himself. Verstappen’s right rear wheel caught Ocon’s left front as he turned into the corner, pitching him into a spin and into the runoff area. The Dutchman blasted ‘what an idiot’ into the radio.
