THE mayor of Torrox has been publicly criticised for allegedly praising the ‘positive side’ of a recent murder. Mayor Oscar Medina was reprimanded by all parties but his own in a council meeting after reportedly making inappropriate comments during a radio interview about the murder of a woman from El Morche in October. Left-leaning party Izquierda Unida (IU) presented a motion to admonish the mayor for his comments following the death of 44-year-old mother-of-two Manoli C S in El Morche last month. IU’s proposal was seconded by all parties expect Medina’s own Partido Popular (PP), leading to a public reprimand of Mayor Medina in the council chamber. The politician had previously faced calls to resign after using a radio interview on the killing to say Torrox was now ‘known’ by national newspapers. During the interview, Mr Medina told how a national journalist had said Torrox was well-known in Madrid, before adding, “that did not happen before I was mayor.” He later went on, “Spain knows Torrox and it is because something is doing well,” explaining, “this has nothing to do with the tragic death of yesterday.” Mayor Medina apologised

Revolutionary RESTORATION works to a temple in Nerja have uncovered graffiti from July 1936. The word ‘revolucion’ (revolution) had been covered under several centimetres of paint at the Virgen de las Angustias chapel, which was built in 1720. The building had been occupied in 1936 by trade unionists a few days after the coup by Franco’s Republic on July 18, 1936. The labour union - named the CNT - took over the chapel of a house on Nerja’s Calle Pintada, removing its altarpieces and statues and writing on walls before turning it into the headquarters of their organisation.
The building remained the union’s headquarters until Febuary 9, 1937 when Italian troops joined Spanish nationalists and entered Nerja. According to historian Dr Francisco Capilla, “the graffiti on the outside must be understood in the that context and had to be made by the CNT themselves. We must bear in mind that the N340 road passes in front of the wall so the slogan would be seen by anyone going past.” Works to reform the Virgen de las Angustias chapel are being funded by the Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry for Tourism, and will cost more than €100,000.

Catalan trial set Independence probe wraps up SPAIN’S Supreme Court is set to try 18 leading pro-Catalan independence figures early next year after announcing its investigation into last year’s secession referendum and declaration was now complete. The court said last week 18 of the accused, including Cataluña’s former Vice President Oriol Junqueras, would stand trial on rebellion and disobedience charges in 2019. They have also been charged with misappropriation of public money to stage the referendum. The court’s announcement comes as both Spain’s Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister suggested last week the charge of rebellion was not appropriate for the case. The 18 people set to go on trial include Junqueras and former Cataluña Generalitat officials Joaqium Forn, Jordi Turull and Raul Romeva. The ex-speaker of the Catalan Parliament Carme Forcadell is also due to appear before the court. Nine of the 18

the independence referendum and declaration in October 2017. Spain’s Constitutional Court ruled prior to the vote that holding it would be illegal. Puigdemont and others remain abroad after arrest warrants were is-
sued for them in the wake of the referendum. Prosecution and defence teams are now set to make their submissions to the court, including requests for sentences. The charge of rebellion carries a jail sentence of up to 30 years. The court said the trial would likely last for three months, with a ruling not due until June. The news comes as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his deputy Carmen Calvo both implied the charge of rebellion may not apply. Both cited historic parliamentary proceedings and said rebellion charges should only be used in cases involving an attempted overthrow of the state by armed force. Their comments came after Pablo Casado, leader of the opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP), accused Sanchez of aiding a ‘coup d’etat’ by trying to negotiate with Cataluña’s current pro-independence administration.

PASSED ON: Cemeteries fill with flowers on All Saints’ Day PEOPLE from across Spain are marking All Saints’ Day today (Thursday), a holiday that sees many take time to honour and respect the dead. Families traditionally gather in cemeteries and lay flowers at the graves of loved ones on All Saints’ Day (Dia de Todos los Santos in Spanish). Cemeteries become filled with colour as a result of people placing the bouquets to help keep the memo-
ry of their deceased loved ones alive. The festival is so prominent that November 1 continues to be the day when florists in Spain sell the most flowers. Scenes of flowers in cemeteries also feature in popular culture, such as in the 2006 film Volver. Churches also hold special masses to mark the day in memory of all those who have passed away. Signed off POLITICIANS have signed a contract to build two bridges in Nerja. The €252,271 project has been awarded to Asturian company Media Madera Ingenieros Consultores SL, which will install wooden walkways over the mouths of the rivers Chillar and Seco. Politicians approved plans to build the bridges last month and have now signed the contract. The plans will mean pedestrians no longer have to make long detours around the town when the riv-
er beds fill up with rain water. The project, which was initially proposed in 2015 by the previous Partido Popular (PP) run council, will use bridges identical to those already in place in neighbouring Torrox. The bridge over the Rio Chillar will cost €190,575.99 and will measure around 16.5 metres long and three metres wide, while the one over Rio Seco will cost €61,695.84 and measure 30 metres long and three metres wide.

Figures rise THE number of immigrants saved from waters off Spain has significantly increased this year. Spanish authorities at Motril port have rescued 4,638 people trying to reach the country so far this year, a figure almost four times higher than during the same period last year. By October last year, 1,165 immigrants had been saved from the sea, almost double the number of the year before that. Hundreds more migrants reached the port last month and are being

held in tents in a temporary centre in Motril. During heavy weather last month, the tents flooded, prompting the Spanish authorities to find a more appropriate solution. They are now building temporary structures which will offer more shelter during bad weather. It has not yet been announced when these will be completed. So far this year, Spain has received a total of 43,467 immigrants, the highest number in Europe.

HOTTING UP: Spain could be drier and warmer by 2050.
Climate forecast RISING heat, more forest fires, less rain and animal extinction could be in store for Spain by 2050 due to climate change, according to a new study. The Observatory of Sustainability has released its forecasts for the years leading up to 2100. Their report claimed Spain could warm by 2.6 degrees by 2050 in the worst case scenario of the country failing to move away from fossil fuels and slash emissions. The study, based on government data, found that in the worst case RCP8.5 scenario Spain would warm by 2.6 degrees 50 years before average global temperatures reach that level. The forecast follows data last week which showed that emissions in Spain rose by 4.4 per cent from 2016 to 2017. The authors of the report said that percentage showed the country had not moved away from fossil fuels, making their worst case scenario more likely. The Observatory’s Climate Change in Spain report, which used the CCSM4 prediction model to produce its findings, claimed rainfall levels would drop if temperatures warmed by 2.6 degrees. The effects would be seen across the coun-
try except in the western Canary Islands, Navarra and the Valencia region would see less rain. Flooding would also be more likely in those areas because rainfall would not be distributed evenly throughout the year. The report said rain would become ‘scarce’ in northwest Spain, a region which currently has a temperate climate compared to much of the country. Galicia, Lugo and Ourense could see reductions of 500 millimetres per year, half their current levels of annual rainfall. They could come to resemble how southern Spain looks today rather than the current ‘Green Spain’ landscapes they are known for. The report also found Spain would see temperatures rise well above two degrees by 2050, with the only exception being A Coruña, the Balearic and Canary Islands. The regions of Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and parts of Andalucia would be hit hardest by rising temperatures. More wildfires and the extinction of species could follow the rise, the Observatory said. It added temperatures last September had peaked at 1.4 degrees above average.

Security beefed up LOCAL POLICE in Rincon de la Victoria will be intensifying security checks until the end of the year. Officers have announced increased traffic controls in Rincon de la Victoria, Torre de Benagalbon, La Cala del Moral and Benagalbon. These controls will include checking drivers’ documentation, cracking down on mobile phone use behind the wheel, and alcohol breath tests. Police are also stepping up street patrols, particularly at night following a series of crimes in the Rincon de la Victoria area. Last month, two men were arrested after breaking into a home and threatening its owners with a knife. The alleged burglars were jailed awaiting trial after reportedly forcing entry to an apartment in La Cala del Moral while wearing balaclavas. The suspects are said to have tried to break into the property early one morning. Hearing a disturbance, a woman inside reportedly tried to stop them but was forced to the ground before the men held a knife to her neck. Her then husband arrived home, disturbing the men, and was stabbed in both hands. Police arrived and arrested both suspects. Later in the same month, police detained a man for crimes against road safety. Officers from the Local Police arrested a French man, named as JAR, after he was allegedly found driving at high speed along the town’s Avenida del Mediterraneo at around 4am, swerving to avoid cars and driving on the wrong side of the road. The 52-year-old driver reportedly tested positive for drink-driving and was also found to be carrying drugs.

Residents of the small neighbourhood between Torrox and El Morche campaigned for the removal of the antenna for 18 years, claiming it was ‘responsible’ for causing the cancer and death of at least four people. OUR VIEW End of austerity perhaps THE 2018 UK budget may or may not be to everyone’s taste but according to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, repeating the statement made by the Prime Minister, the end of austerity is in sight. Good news if true but one has to remember that just last Sunday he explained that if a no-deal Brexit goes ahead then he will have to produce a new emergency budget which will almost certainly be more stringent than the current one. The good news for the government was that taxes collected have been higher than forecast which means that the Chancellor has more money to play with than expected but due to a possible worry about the future he has put £500 million (€560 million) to one side in case of Brexit problems. The sad fact is that in reality, the Conservative government is not in control of the countries destiny as the Northern Irish DUP minority supporters could bring the government down almost at a stroke and although Mrs May says that the Brexit deal is 95 per cent there, it’s the 5 per cent that could cause a major problem. At the end of the day, there are 27 countries who also have to agree the deal and that could also be more difficult than hoped for, especially as the Irish border is going to be a difficult problem to resolve to the satisfaction of all parties. Despite more rhetoric from the new leader of the Partido Popular, Spain is unlikely to cause problems over Gibraltar but there is still a long way to go before any final agreement can be reached with the EU.

a court case which saw Orange’s most recent appeal in
December 2017 to keep the antenna fail. Since last December’s ruling, Torrox Council has unsuccessfully pushed Orange to remove the structure itself, allowing the company extra time to find another place to install it to avoid any signal coverage problems. Instead, the council will now use the ruling in last December’s court case confirming Orange must provide access to the privatelyowned property where the antenna is located. On Monday, Torrox Council workers will access the area and remove the antenna
themselves. Mayor Medina confirmed, “we are going to remove the antenna which was installed using a provisional and precarious licence in the first term of the PSOE party, with Francisco Muñoz as mayor.” David Ruiz, a neighbourhood spokesman, expressed his “satisfaction” at the result, adding he hoped, “the removal will finally be carried out.” Mr Ruiz explained there had “never” been studies into the radiation levels in the area and whether these could be linked to cancer, but the cancer mortality rate in the area was “very high.”

at the Torre de Benagalbon Institute collected signatures for an online petition at www.change.org. They claim the prefabricated classrooms are unsuitable for purpose and are only 10 metres away from building works.
The month before, parents even pulled their children out of school over concerns their classrooms are unsafe. Only half of students at the school turned up to class for five days at the beginning of term after parents complained of a lack of safety and hygiene measures, and discomfort from noise, heat and dust.

US synagogue shooting PEOPLE across the United States (US) and the world mourned the deaths of 11 Jewish worshippers shot while observing Shabbat at a synagogue in Pittsburgh last Saturday. Members of the New Life Congregation were gunned down in the Tree of Life Synagogue that morning in the deadliest attack on Jews in US history. It came amidst concerns that anti-Semitism is on the rise in the US and across the world. Mourners have since placed flowers outside the synagogue and vigils have been held in memory of the victims in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. Local police said Robert Bowers, 46, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. US prosecutors based in Pittsburgh are seeking the death penalty for the suspect who was due to appear before a court in the city last Monday on 29 charges. Scott Brady, the US attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania which is handling the case, said

We must unite to conquer hate.” The White House flew its flag at half mast in mourning for the victims. Trump later claimed no one may have been killed if there had been armed guards posted at the synagogue. The Spanish Embassy in Washington DC said: “We are deeply saddened by the news from Pittsburgh. The Embassy stands in solidarity with the victims, their families and the synagogue community.” The alleged gunman’s motives are believed to stem from antiSemitism. He reportedly told police officers who arrested him at the scene that he wanted all Jews “to die.”
THE shooting comes as figures show the number of anti-Semitic-related incidents has increased in the US. The Anti-Defamation League (ADF) Jewish rights advocacy group said it had recorded a 57 per cent rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the US in 2017 compared to the previous year. Earlier ADF figures showed attacks had declined for around a decade up to and including 2013. They then rose by 21 per cent in 2014. The latest FBI statistics show that of the 1,538 religiously-motivated hate crimes committed during 2016, 54.2 per cent of them were anti-Semitic. Incidents have included harassment, threats, and the vandalism of synagogues and other Jewish buildings with Nazi symbols including the swastika. Deborah E Lipstadt, a Professor of Holocaust history at Atlanta’s Emory University, said anti-Semitism was now the worst it had ever been. The increase in anti-Semitism has been linked to the rise of the farright more generally in the last decade. Jonathan Greenblatt, the head of the ADF, said anti-Semitism had was almost becoming normalised and claimed Trump himself had used rhetoric with anti-Jewish undertones. “But it’s about more than what one man does. We are seeing an environment in which anti-Semitism has moved from the margins to the mainstream,” he said. It also comes as the US has seen a spike in the number of mass shootings. There were 26 shootings documented in the US in October as of last Monday, with the Pittsburgh attack the second most recent and deadliest according to the Gun Violence Archive. The attack is likely to see renewed calls for greater gun control measures, with efforts to restrict firearms ownership having struggled to gain traction in recent years. The Republican Party, which controls both houses of Congress and the presidency with Trump, traditionally takes a pro-gun or ‘Second Amendment’ stance. It also has close ties to the National Rifle Association (NRA) gun owners and industry lobbying group.

Repentant Rato jailed FORMER Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and ex Vice-President of the Spanish government, Rodrigo Rato, has been jailed for embezzlement during his banking years. Rato arrived on his own to the Madrid prison of Soto del Real last Thursday, where he must serve a sentence of four-and-a-half years for financial fraud between 2010 and 2012. “I accept the mistakes I have made and I ask society to forgive me, in particular those who were

It is the first time that Rato, VicePresident during the administration of Jose Maria Aznar (1996-2004) of the Popular Party, has admitted guilt after being found complicit in the case known as ‘Black cards.’ The Supreme Court of Spain confirmed on October 3 the initial sentence imposed initially by the National Audience (AN) in February 2017 against the former Director
General of the IMF. Rato and 63 others were accused of transferring some €12 million from Caja Madrid and Bankia, through the use of credit cards not registered by the Treasury of personal expenses. Rato was charged with continuing the ‘corrupt scheme’ of his predecessor, Miguel Blesa, who committed suicide in July 2017. This is one of three legal cases opened against Rato, with two others involving money laundering and financial irregularities.
SPAIN’S unemployment rate fell to 14.6 per cent in the third quarter, official data has shown. This is its lowest level since the last quarter of 2008 after a busy tourist season boosted employment in services. Spanish unemployment has fallen steadily from its peak in early 2013, when it reached nearly 27 per cent. Seasonal businesses like tourism and agriculture have helped to improve the picture over the past few years, and the total number of people employed is 19.5 million.

Sabadell weathers storm COSTS from IT problems at its British bank TSB hit Sabadell’s third quarter earnings on Friday, but shares in the Spanish banking group nevertheless rose as it exceeded forecasts. Sabadell said its third-quarter net profit had fallen 37 per cent after a botched migration of TSB’s systems in April prompted a regulatory investigation and the exit of its CEO. Despite this, Sabadell reported net attributable profit for the quarter of €127 million, lifting its
shares by 4.9 per cent. Spain itself has had a stronger than expected loan growth, particularly in the large corporate and retail mortgage sectors. Sabadell said the extraordinary costs relating to the TSB outage included an increase in interest rates on its premium account, impacting on commissions and fraud losses. Its rival Caixabank reported a decline of 27.6 per cent in third quarter net profit.

Minister labour vow SPAIN’S Economy Minister has told representatives of the British banking industry that her government has no plans to make major reforms to labour laws in a London meeting last Monday. Nadia Calviño told those at the meeting in the City of London, Britain’s financial centre, the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) were seeking to make ‘adjustments’ to worker rules. It comes after the government unveiled a budget which included the largest hike of the minimum wage in Spain’s democratic history. Calviño said there had been ‘great confusion’ over whether the PSOE would overhaul labour laws enacted by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) which relaxed some labour rules. “We are not going to change all the labour legislation, there are only going to be some adjustments,” Calviño said. “A part of the PP reform had positives results, giving more flexibility to the labour market. Other effects have been negative, creat-

Calviño said PP laws making it easier for firms to hire and fire had created a new class of workers unable to make long term decisions. Companies were also reluctant to invest the minister added. of Commerce and the Spanish Embassy that the minimum wage hike would have a ‘neutral’ effect on job creation. The government plans to increase the minimum rate of pay to €900 a month. Bank bolsters security THE Bank of Spain has launched new security software on its website to make its systems more robust in the wake of the cyber-attack suffered at the end of August that blocked access to the agency’s home page. The Spanish government has taken action after receiving severe criticism after the incident, but pointed out that ‘cyber security is an area of key concern for administrations around the world.’ Evidence has led the authorities to conclude that the hackers involved were largely based abroad, with only 10 per cent of the illegal activity being traced to Spanish territory. The cyber attack has been linked to previous assaults on the websites of the PSOE, the National Police and the National Court, and is believed to be part of a campaign backing the independence of Cataluña. Importantly, there is no evidence that the hackers gained access to sensitive information or that there were any leaks of confidential data. Nevertheless, the Bank of Spain suffered reputational and operational damage at the time.

An international laughing stock?
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL that’s just about it. I think the British have finally managed to become the laughing stock of virtually the whole planet. From the bat infested cave hideouts of Daesh, to the plush corridors and well stocked bars of the European parliament, I can almost hear the sniggers and guffaws from here, and we only have ourselves to blame. Slowly but surely, we have allowed the PC brigade, the lunatic left and the snowflakes, to influence our lives and make a mockery of our laws, our culture and our common sense. We are persecuting our brave troops, pardoning our enemies and kowtowing to a whole host of foreigners and interlopers, many of whom wish us nothing but harm and treat everything we stand for with utter contempt. The police have lost our respect. Not the least because they are almost afraid to arrest or question anyone of ethnic origin, in case they are accused of racism or prejudice. Many of our judges, who at one time we could rely on to make fair judgements, seem to have utterly lost the plot. We now seem to accept their often utterly nonsensical decisions purely as the ‘norm’. The reason is actually quite simple. We’re all brainwashed. The oldest ploy in the book and we’ve been completely sucked in by it.
JUSTICE: Will a show trial mean Khashoggi’s family never see justice? This latest example was a real humdinger. In 2006, a Somalian born woman applied for UK asylum. She was accepted and became a British citizen in 2013. She also received passports for her children and her mother. She recently showed her ‘gratitude’ to the UK by travelling to Somalia and trying to smuggle in
a couple of distant relatives on two of the passports. She was caught red handed and last week hauled up before the courts. Subsequently, the judge decided her acts were humanitarian and not criminal. Instead of a thoroughly deserved jail sentence, she was given community service and sent on her
way. The two relatives were granted full asylum. Well of course they were. What a wonderful deterrent to others of the same mind! Oh, and by the way, there were no attempts at ‘integration’ here. Despite being in the country for 12 years, the woman spoke no English, can’t work, and receives benefits and NHS care for sciatica and depression, and you don’t think they are not all laughing at us? Give us a break. A quick prophecy here about the outcome of the Saudi-Khashoggi affair. The Saudis will declare the murder a rogue operation. They will parade all the suspects (assassination squad) in a lavish Riyadh show trial and hand down long sentences to each. I wouldn’t put it past them to throw in a low life they can behead, just to show they really mean business. These men will then go to jail. After a reasonable time, when all the furore has died down, they will be quietly released, given millions of Riyals apiece and disappear into the Kingdom to live in luxury for the rest of their days (I also suggest they watch their backs!). The money men will all give a sigh of relief, congratulate each other on a job well done and get back to their real purpose in life, manipulating the peasants. You and me that is! Currencies Direct offers EWN writer’s book to customers CURRENCIES DIRECT has teamed up with a Euro Weekly News legal expert to offer free copies of the latest edition of his book on Spanish law to customers who register. The international money transfer company decided to give away David Searl’s new edition of You & the Law in Spain to help inform clients about the country’s legal system. Searl currently writes the Legally Speaking column in Euro Weekly News, offering readers the chance to write in and ask questions about Spanish law. Peter Loveday, the director of Currencies Direct’s Southern Europe operation, told Euro Weekly News he wanted to make the offer to help inform people about life under Spanish law. “When I first moved to Spain 16 years ago I was fortunate to

Manchester University (should it even still be called Manchester University?) student union want to ban clapping, whooping and cheering, in an attempt to be more inclusive towards those with anxiety or sensory issues, in favour of the British Sign Language jazz-hands version of appreciation. But, after most of the media went crazy about this idea, the University then said it was actually not banning it - they were offering an alternative
and was not compulsory. Stop - you are bonkers! I’ve mentioned apps like Uber and Just Eat before, and though I have used Uber when in the UK or US, I have always steered away from Just Eat, as I don’t know where the food is coming from. It turns out I made a good decision. This week it has come to light that the rating the app gives their eateries, bears absolutely no resemblance to the ones the local councils give them for hygiene. Many takeaways in England with a zero rating for hygiene, are among those listed on the Just Eat food app, a BBC investigation reports. That’s right - zero as opposed to the four and five stars the app gave them. Twenty out of 31 takeaways rated zero in Birmingham, are on Just Eat. Nine of 13 takeaways rated zero in Liverpool are listed there. In Manchester, Bristol and London, half of the takeaways with a zero rating are on the platform. That means rats, cockroaches and salmonella. It’s disgusting that this can be allowed. I’m not even sure if there is anything that can legally be done about it, but there should be. The public should be safeguarded against companies that do not do due diligence, saying that ratings are gathered by customer comments. It is unacceptable as they are judging by taste, which doesn’t indicate the filth the food was kept, prepared and cooked in. mikesenker@gmail.com

I AM guessing most of you (us) have had some sort of heating on since last week? Come on, be honest, and I hope anyone hit by the floods is at least starting to get back to something approaching normality - some of the TV footage was horrible. Just because you are close by, shout out to anyone affected in San Pedro and Estepona, stay safe. The Chase made social media headlines over the last week and ITV have been surprisingly quiet about it all, me thinks too quiet maybe? Firstly, The Governess seems to have been given a much easier set of questions than contestants Sarah-Jane and Majorie. The ladies racked up an impressive 18 correct answers but were caught by Anne, thanks to, on the face of it, an easier set of questions. AND THEN Mark The Beast Labbett seemed to have been beaten by time only for
THE CHASE: This popular ITV show is an evening staple for many viewers. his final answer to be given by Dr Who side-kick Bradley, even though the clock clearly showed no time left before he completed his answer. The Chase is a staple of early evening viewing and doesn’t need anything messy clouding the format. Just a final thought, what do the
contestants do all day? Win or not, they have all enjoyed their day and had a lovely time. If you know, let me know and if you fancy a bit of Come Dine With Me insight next week, let me know on that too? The Chase is on week days, ITV. Fans of box-sets might want to
search out Informer, via BBC iPlayer. This is a gritty and complex thriller about a counter-terrorism officer recruiting an East London lad to be, you guessed it, an informer. The story is solid and nothing is off limits for the script writers. Let’s quickly waltz through the latest episodes of Strictly. Seann Walsh and Katya Jones left on Sunday. I’m making no further comment on that. I will just mention the Halloween opening last week’s, themed apparently on the Mexican Day of the Dead Holiday. There is a lot of noise about the dancing having racist overtones. Now, I much prefer the All Saints Holiday to Halloween, but I’m not signing up to the racist complaints against Strictly. Three lads who I suspect could turn their hands to anything continue their Road Trip on ITV, Thursday. Gordon, Gino and Fred are brilliantly flung together to cheekily complete a road trip and have some Carry-On fun along the way. Last week the lads were in Scotland, there were some obvious kilt jokes and lots of scallops, combined with
some stunning Celtic scenery. I’m a fan, I’m sure the guys will be thrilled! Sunday evening brought us the start of a new BBC adaptation of The Little Drummer Girl. This is from the people who brought us The Night Manager, so that’s a good starting point? Well yes, a good start, but for anyone who knows John le Carre’s novel this is destined to be a much darker TV experience than Night Manager. The story is a spy drama set in the 1970’s following a bombing in East Germany. There is an Israeli intelligence investigation which undercovers a link to assassination attempts against leading Jewish people across the globe. Michael Shannon and Florence Pugh are the stars of this slow burning story. Stick with it. Dark Heat is a new detective drama from ITV, Wednesday evenings. Honeydew is also a great source of vitamin B complex which breaks fat down and converts it into energy.
Lemons are also great for detoxifying the liver, and having a healthy liver aids the ability to digest food and burn fat. Lemons also prevent the accumulation of fat in the body. Other great fruits include grapefruit, apricots, blueberries, pomegranates and watermelon.
Helpline calls on the rise A GAMBLING addiction hotline has seen a 30 per cent increase in the number of calls over the last five years. Half of the 30,000 calls a year to the National Gambling Addiction Helpline are concerned about mental health, and two thirds claim it is causing them serious money problems. A spokesman for the Gambling Commission said it is important that anybody
with issues of this kind has access to support when they need it. He added “A focus on preventing harm in the first place is equally important”, which is why the commission is taking action, requiring gambling companies to look out for those detrimentally affected, and to step in and protect them. The growing popularity online and on smartphones has led to gambling now being a €15.7 billion industry.

Appalling views bring shame I AM appalled at your newspaper for publishing a biased and homophobic column by Leapy Lee! Saying you aren’t ‘homophobic’ does not mean you aren’t. Referring to minorities as ‘The lunatics are taking over the asylum’ sums up this columnist’s true feelings. I am all for freedom of speech but not this kind of attack on any minority! Chilly dip I HAVE been a regular user of the Albox pool since it opened. Now the mayor of Albox has not only had the gym closed down, but the pool is not open in the mornings any more except on Saturday. There is only one lifeguard having to cover these hours (poor guy). I have been to the town hall twice to complain, not just about the hours, but that the electric for hairdriers was turned off (now sorted, but it took two weeks). Now the heating for the pool has been turned off. It’s freezing and as nearly all the people who use it at 4pm are OAPs we need the pool heated. It seems to me that the mayor is determined to have the community centre completely closed down. Needless to say myself and many friends of all nationalities will not use it until the pool is at least 27 degrees C. Give us pensioners our warm pool back please! Mrs T Turpie

Bird watching this weekend FANS of bird watching will want to visit Almuñecar’s 32nd annual Ornithological Contest. The event, which is held in the basement of the Plaza Mayor building, will see an exhibition of 1,350 types of bird from 97 breeders and will be open from 10am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm until Saturday. The free event will see more than 1,000 species of birds exhibited from Alermia, Malaga, Granada and Jaen. Prizes will be awarded at 12.30pm on Sunday for colour, posture, fauna, exotic birds, and hybrid birds. The awards ceremony will take place at the Francisco Bonet stadium.
Flamenco fun THE FESTIVAL: The event attracts large numbers. THE organisers of the annual Weekend Beach Festival, have announced the event’s 2019 dates and released 12,000 tickets. Fans of the popular festival rushed to buy the first round of tickets, which sold out within hours. The 2019 event will take place in Torre del Mar from Wednesday July 3 to Saturday July 6, with band SKA-P the first act to be announced. In just five years, Weekend Beach Festival Torre del Mar, has positioned itself as one of the essential musical events in any festival agenda, both
with a large camping area. The music event attracts young people from all over Axarquia and Spain, who camp out on the beach and enjoy the music, food and entertainment on offer. In 2016, Torre del Mar Town Hall announced that the festival had raised between €2.5 to €3 million in revenue for the area, attracting around 33,000 visitors to the event each day. THE Torre del Mar Lux Mundi Ecumenical Centre has announced its November events. On Tuesday, November 13 and 27 there will be photography lessons with professional snapper, Rob Bell. The sessions promise to help you to get more from your camera and photos. On Thursday, November 15, there will be a coach excursion to Gibraltar, and a chance to take a cable car to the top of the Rock and see the barbary apes. Though on very heavily compacted soils (such as those that have been trodden on when wet) it can improve the crumb-like structure and introduce beneficial air pockets, but studies have shown that in most cases this practice does more harm than good. Helpfully, the natural action of earthworms in soil create the perfect structure and fill it with little, airfilled channels, which digging apparently destroys. Rather than keeping weeds at bay, digging brings seeds to the surface, stimulating their germination. Digging can break the long roots of bindweed, which actually helps culti-

BMW 8-Series Brawn and beauty BMW has set out the 8-series as a piece of high-performance automotive art - with the emphasis on performance. It debuted at the Villa d’Este classic car gathering in Italy, followed in quick succession by appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Pebble Beach concours d’elegance. This is actually BMW’s second attempt at the idea. The previous E31 8-series was sold between 1989 and 1999. Styled by Klaus Kapitza, it was one of the first cars to be designed with Computer Aided Design (CAD). While he defends a big diesel for environmental long journeys, Pieter Nota, BMW’s sales and marketing director, admits that in
Europe big capacity internal combustion engines may be time-limited. Two engines are available when the 8-series goes on sale next March, the first being a 316bhp six-cylinder turbo-diesel costing €86,000 and reaching 155mph. The piece de resistance however, is the M850i xDrive, which will cost €112,000 but boasts a 523 bhp, 4.4 litre, biturbo V8, driving all four wheels through a specially adapted eight-speed automatic transmission. It also has a modified version of the xDrive multi-plate clutch to direct torque to the front axle when it is required for stability, or to save cremating the rear tyres. Equipment levels are predictably high, with BMW’s roster of dri-
ving aids in the petrol version with M suspension and adaptive damping, active variable-ratio steering and an active limitedslip differential. The standard specification is also high, with those inscrutable LED headlamps, autoopening hatchback, Harman Kardon speakers, enhanced Bluetooth and intelligent cruise control. With the double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, the settings in comfort mode and all the safety sentinels switched on, you’ll only be aware that there’s a razor-sharp V8 under the bonnet if
Hyundai Nexo: An easy cell THE Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has been awarded five-stars in Euro NCAP testing, winning praise from crash testers and earning a top spot among alternative-fuel vehicles. Experts at Thatcham Research, a British safety organisation which conducts Euro NCAP, commended the Nexo’s occupant protection score of 94 per cent - the highest of any zero-emission vehicle - and autonomous emergency braking systems (AEB). Matthew Avery, Director of Research at Thatcham said: “With the NEXO, Hyundai have successfully demonstrated that alternative fuelled vehicles need not pose a risk to car safey.” Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV’s) turn hydrogen into electricity, which is used to turn the wheels. The only tailpipe emission is pure, drinkable water and the hydrogen can be generated using renewable
energy such as wind or solar. Advantages over conventional battery-electric vehicles include enhanced range (the Nexo will travel over 400 miles on a single charge) and recharging times
of only a few minutes rather than hours. Nevertheless, the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is high, and refuelling infrastructure in the UK is still fairly weak.

From Bath it started T l e a st , t h at’s what they used to say in the 1970’s and 1980’s when the famous Lombard RAC Rally used to start there. What an amazing event that was, and what a fabulous atmosphere was created by this legendary world championship rally in those days. More spectators w ould t u r n o u t t h e n to watch the spectacle of some of the best drivers and rally cars in the world than the combin e d t o t a l s o f e v ery other major sporting event of the time put together! The city of Bath would be packed full of drivers, navigators, spectators, service crews, trailers, tow-cars, marshals, press, TV and goodness knows what else. So, imagine that the great name of Lombard could be reunited with the city of Bath, and a major car event carrying that name as principal sponsor would again be based in the city. Some 125 rally cars with 250 crew from that period would reunite in Great Poultney Street to start the Lombard Bath Rally. Well, it happened last weekend and the event was a huge success. The b r a i n c h i l d o f Tim Nash, the event would be a kind of homage to the RAC rallies of the 1970’s and 1980’s and would attract a full en t r y o f 1 2 5 p erio d (mostly!) rally cars, some driven by drivers who competed i n R AC r a l l i e s o f those days and some driven by yo u n g e r e n t h u sias ts proud to still carry the original names of the cars’ crews on their wings. Such rallying luminaries as Jimmy McRae, Stig Blomqvist, Louise Aitken, Dai Llewellin, Rosemary S mith, Ji l l R o b i n so n a n d many m o r e t u r n e d o u t to drive cars they once campaigned professionally all those years ago.

I am p le a s e d to te ll you that this writer was also out on the event, n o t in a fac to ry Triu mp h T R7 V 8 b u t, much to even my surprise, in a beautifully prepared Group 4 Ford Escort Mk. 2 from 1979. T h e ev en t c o u ld not, realistically, be a properly timed, flat-out competitive rally but would be more of a ‘Tour’ that would visit many of the special stages that were used on RAC rallies in the area back in those halcyon days. At 8.01am last Saturday morning the first of the cars pulled out of the Bath Spa H o te l an d h e a d ed fo r the Great Poultney Street start holding area and waited for the marshals countdown to begin their reacquaintance
with the firs t of the s pe c ia l stages, Longleat Park, just outside Bath. I was amazed at the numbe r of e xc ite d s pe c ta tors who lined the route, waving and taking photographs, just like the real RAC the last time I was there in 1978. How long ago that seemed but how fresh in the memory it felt that morning! We were blessed with the mos t fa bulous w e a the r which was unexpected but it
made the whole event fe e l s o muc h be tte r. The sun was shining, people were out to enjoy the event and it probably was a big factor in the success of it all. Following a drive through Longleat, crews headed for the famous wildlife park at C ric ke t St Thoma s ne a r C ha rd in Some rs e t. This was a stage that produced mixe d e motions for me , having won the rally that was run there on several occasions but also lost the life
there of a very close pal in one of my own rally cars. Thus it was something of a bitter-sweet m om ent when we ar r i ved t her e r eady t o start our run through the park. It’s amazing though how the dropping of the marshal’s flag focuses t he m i nd on driving as quickly as possible and I thoroughly enjoyed harnessing and using some of the Escort’s 280 horsepower! From here, and after a well earned coffee, the cars headed for Wiscombe Hillclimb, near Honiton in Devon. The hill was just as I remembered it and it was a pleasure to drive in front of so many enthusiastic and friendly spectators, including a couple from The Classic Car Club of Andalucia! That was such a blast and t hen t he r out e headed t o Mi nehead f or l unch and, again, the place was packed
with enthusiastic spectators wanting to see the cars, collect autographs and chat to the drivers and navigators. The best part of the event followed with a really fast run up the fabulous Porlock Toll Road, closed especially for the event as it was all those years ago. It was slippery at the bottom and a bit treacherous further up where a hairpin left claimed the front wing of McRae’s Opel Manta. Our Escort went extremely well up here and both myself and co-driver, Bob Rutherford, thoroughly enjoyed it! Qui t e a l ong and ver y pretty road section followed with cars climbing Cheddar Gorge before returning to Bat h wher e cel ebr at i ons went on in fine style until the small hours. I remembered just how good those after-rally parties were. And this one was just like those amazing days of yesteryea... I can’t wait to do it again!

Leicester mourns helicopter crash THE helicopter crash outside Leicester City’s stadium on Saturday killed the club’s owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, two members of his staff, the pilot, and a passenger, it has been confirmed. The aircraft had just cleared the King Power Stadium when it spiralled out of control and crashed into a fireball at 20.30 BST. Leicestershire Police said it believed the other people killed in the accident to be Nursara Suknamai, Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and his partner Izabela Roza Lechowicz.
