FIVE people have been arrested for holding a man hostage in Axarquia. The young people face charges of assault, robbery, criminal damage and kidnapping after taking a man by force and making him travel with them to Mezquitilla, Velez-Malaga and Algarrobo. Police began investigating on August 25 after a man reported being assaulted at the Mezquitilla fairground in Velez-Malaga by a gang who forced him to take them to where his car was parked. There they reportedly, ‘beat him and threatened him by forcing him to take drugs against his will to diminish his physical and mental capacity.’ The victim claimed the group then forced him to withdraw cash from three ATMs while one of the gang took his car to go to VelezMalaga. The vehicle is reported to have been extensively damaged as it was driven through the town’s narrow roads. The driver allegedly then picked up the group and its victim again before moving to Algarrobo where three people detained the man next to a health centre while another two attempted to break into his home. They are said to have mistaken his property, however, instead entering a neighbouring house where they disturbed its occupants as they took their television out of a window. ARRESTED: The gang attempted to break into the victim’s house in Algarrobo. to get away in his car but the gang reportedly caught him and allegedly hit him so hard he was forced to take refuge inside the health centre. Staff there managed to intervene, preventing the group from beating the man again. Members of the Guardia Civil from Torrox and Algarrobo worked with the Algarrobo Local Police and VelezMalaga National Police to
locate and arrest the men across Algarrobo, VelezMalaga and Malaga City. The gang are said to hold previous criminal records, and officers claim they had carried out other violent robberies, as well as forcing other victims to come with them to buy drugs. Police say others had been deterred from reporting these incidents out of ‘fear.’
Boy drowns A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy has died after being pulled unconscious from a swimming pool while holidaying with his family in the Axarquia region. Emergency services were called out to the villa complex in Nerja where the boy was staying at around 6pm last Tuesday. He was holidaying with 12 family members,
who are all said to be British according to reports. Emergency services arrived at the resort, on Avenida Rodriguez Acosta, to find the boy unconscious. Paramedics tried to revive him but he was declared dead at the scene, Guardia Civil officers said.
Of the men arrested, one was found to be living in Spain illegally and has been handed over to the VelezMalaga National Police immigration department. Three others have also been remanded in custody.

Serious fall A PAINTER has been injured after falling from a fivestorey building in El Morche. The 31-year-old man is reportedly in a serious condition at the Malaga Regional Hospital after falling around 15 metres from a residential building in the Atalaya del Sur urbanisation on Calle Carlos Moreno. Local Police and health workers were forced to call an air ambulance to transfer the man to hospital after his safety equipment reportedly failed as he suspended over the building as he worked on it. According to one publication, the painter was hanging off the building suspended by a safety harness. For causes which are now being investigated, the man fell, first hitting an aluminium structure before falling into an internal courtyard. Members of the Guardia Civil, Labour Inspectorate and Local Police are now investigating. The victim is said to originally be from Cordoba and specialised in painting and high-rise works.

EU budget warning Officials dismiss debt concerns By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S Finance Minister has said the European Union (EU) will likely approve the country’s budget plans amidst reports Brussels officials were preparing to warn Madrid over public debt concerns. Maria Jesus Montero said a letter that EU finance officials were due to send Spain “endorsed” measures that will see higher government spending and tax increases if approved. Montero’s comments follow speculation that the EU was preparing to warn Spain that the draft plans risked efforts to slash the country’s deficit. The deficit, or negative difference between income and outgoings for the Treasury, stood at more than

€36.2 billion at the end of last year according to government data. “We understand that Brussels will give its endorsement to our budget plans,” Montero said after a Council of Ministers meeting last Friday. Pablo Casado, leader of
the conservative opposition Partido Popular (PP), said the budget plans amounted to a two-year election campaign for the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE). “The government wants to spend money on unnecessary promises at the expense of the future deficit and debt,”
Casado said. EU officials are concerned about whether planned spending hikes can be covered by proposed increases in taxes, including the planned ‘digital’ levy on large technology firms. The EU has the power to strike down Spain’s budget
plans if it deems them too costly. Diplomatic sources said Brussels is not considering this. The Spanish government has been preparing its response to Brussels this week. All EU member states in the eurozone are required to submit their budget plans to officials in Brussels before enacting them into law. The warning comes as the EU showed concerns over plans for Italy’s budget, another country with a large deficit and national debt which also plans increases in spending. EU budget measures were brought in following the Eurozone debt crisis during the recession, which saw countries such as Greece receive large bailouts to cover yawning gaps in their books.

Seafront structure POLITICIANS are dedicating €48,000 to building a permanent stage on the seafront in Torre del Mar. The construction will include a concrete structure, wooden flooring and open-air seating, as well as infrastructure for sound and lighting equipment. A GROUP of politicians in Rincon de la Victoria is asking the council to install CCTV cameras in all the area’s monuments classed as being of historic interest. IN RETREAT: Rising temperatures are melting the Monte Perdido Glacier. THIS view may be gone within a matter of years. The Monte Perdido Glacier, in the Pyrenees mountain range near the French border, is one of Spain’s last remaining glaciers. The one-kilometre long and 500 metres high glacier lies near the summit of the Vignemale mountain, one of the highest in the Pyrenees. The Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC) has been monitoring the
glacier since 2011 and data currently shows it is melting at an average rate of three centimetres a day. Ignacio Lopez-Moreno, of the CSIC, told Spanish media the glacier and others in Southern Europe w ould like ly be the firs t in the world to disappear. “Studying them is very important because we can learn about how glaciers behave in their final phases and to what extent melting can speed up or slow down,”
Ex-mayor acquitted A MALAGA court has upheld a ruling acquitting a former mayor of falsifying documents. A judge found Abdeslam Lucena, the former mayor of Benamocarra, had rightly been acquitted of forging documents while he was in power. The judge found a ruling acquitting two other men, Local Policeman Damian Galvez, and another man, Jose Enrique Alba, was also final. Abdeslam Lucena had been accused of ordering two adverts to be erected in front of the La Maroma
institute in July 2008 criticising an opposing politician, Manuel Ruiz Cazorla. A judgement the following January ordered Lucena to remove the panels within 15 days, but he did not comply with the ruling until midJune. Cazorla later accused Lucena of falsifying two internal documents dated January 28 and May 20, 2009 requesting the adverts be removed. A court later found Lucena not guilty of forging the documents, at this latest hearing.

Pool’s still out NERJA’S indoor pool will remain closed following damage to its roof. The community facility, which opened in 2007, has been closed for six months after its roof fell into disrepair, leaving more than 300 users waiting for it to reopen. Despite works to repair the damage, a new technical report advised against opening the facility again, claiming a further €134,000 worth of work needs to be carried out. Nerja Council initially approved the budget for the project last July

but changes to tendering laws mean politicians will have to seek approval once again. The council team apologised to the pool’s users, explaining a technical report had warned of ‘serious deficiencies.’ It added works already carried out included, ‘the replacement of the drywall of the double roofs in the changing rooms.’ Opposing Partido Popular (PP) councillors claim the delay is, ‘another example of the inability of the council.’

‘Gag law’ u-turn SPAIN’S ruling political party has reportedly watered down plans to reform laws which have seen protests banned after the Prime Minister previously said changes were urgently needed. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government has ruled out repealing measures in the Public Safety Law including ones to stop the filming of police officers and ‘express’ or ‘hot’ deportations. The latter refers to immigration authorities being able to immediately send migrants back to Morocco instead of processing them in Spain first. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is currently hearing a case filed by two migrants who were deported under the rules. Reports of backtracking on reform plans, based on internal government documents seen by Spanish media, come as the PSOE laid out plans for changes they do support. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said it was “essential” that some elements of the law are repealed. “Some parts of the law are a specific and effective violation of the right to assemble and associate freely and of the right to information,” the minister said.
Grande-Marlaska added the repeal of express deportations should be dealt with under the framework of immigration laws. Politicians should wait until the case concerning the two sub-Saharan migrants being heard in the ECHR in Strasbourg is resolved, Grande-Marlaska added. PSOE proposals to change the law, which are backed by their leftist Podemos allies in Parliament, include ending requirements to notify the authorities before staging protests. The party also reportedly wants to curb police powers and make it easier for people to identify officers on duty. Proposed changes include only allowing body searches if there is ‘concrete and verifiable’ evidence of wrongdoing and limiting the time detainees can be held without charge. Plans to abolish fines for filming police officers have been toned down. The PSOE now wants to keep the restrictions in cases where it could endanger officers, their families or investigations. The news comes as government data shows the Public Safety Law has resulted in the government collecting almost €270 million in fines from the law since it was introduced. The figure excludes fines collected this year.

Neighbour knife attack A MAN has been remanded in custody after allegedly stabbing his neighbour with a knife. The accused, who is around 60 years old, is said to have knifed his neighbour, who is around the same age, in Torrox following years of arguing. Police became involved after the alleged victim turned up at Torrox’s Guardia Civil station on Calle Ermita Blanca. The man is said to have walked into the station with blood on his hands and face. He reported he had been attacked with a knife by the neighbour living next door

The rain in Spain THE tail end of last week and the weekend saw torrential rain hitting the Costa del Sol with massive disruption and the sad death of one firefighter who was swept away when his vehicle got into difficulty. Roads were closed, rivers flooded and some of the towns which are perched high in the mountains saw their steep stairways becoming waterfalls. Parts of Malaga Province received as much as 70 per cent of their annual rainfall and one person had to be rescued by helicopter as the flood waters threatened her life. Some pockets of habitation were untouched by floods although the rain was heavy and continuous thunder and lightning played havoc with pets which in the main are terrified by loud noises. It would be easy to blame councils and the government for the fact that the infrastructure of drains and flood controls are insufficient but sudden heavy storms such as these can’t really be controlled and at the end of the day, sadly, one just has to live with the knowledge that as the climate changes, so this type of destructive weather is likely to continue. At the end of the day we can only feel sympathy for those who have seen their houses flooded and grateful to those working in the emergency services for all that they do to try to ensure the safety of citizens wherever they may be. Also spare a thought for the animal charities which have to try to cope with literally hundreds of terrified animals who run the risk of being flooded out.

Officers from the Guardia Civil travelled to the accused’s address, locating the man who allegedly admitted having an argument with his neighbour. The reported perpetrator is said to have various criminal records. The police also called an ambulance which took the victim to a health centre. He was treated for moderate defensive knife wounds to both hands, one of which was eight centimetres deep. The incident is the second of its kind to rock Torrox Costa in less than a month after a 44-year-old woman was found stabbed to death in her home in El Morche.

Brawl arrests POLICE have arrested three people who allegedly took part in a brawl which left one man injured. Officers from the National Police detained the three for their reported part in the fight on Avenida Vivar Tellez in Velez-Malaga which resulted in a 35year-old man receiving cuts to his hand from a
large knife. The incident took place near a kiosk, after an argument reportedly broke out over a debt. The victim, and a woman accompanying him, later took refuge in a Guardia Civil station before she was later taken to the Axarquia Regional Hospital complaining of chest pain.

Cable struck A LORRY struck an overhead tram cable, forcing police to divert traffic. The lorry hit the cable as it passed over the tracks on the Comau roundabout on Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I in VelezMalaga, just outside the Peugeot garage. Police and firefighters were forced to divert traffic on the busy main road which leads to the popular El Ingenio shopping centre. The tram has been out of service since June.
PLANS to begin tests to Nerja’s new sewage plant have been put back. Nerja Council originally announced the tests would begin in early 2019, but has now instead said they will start in the first half of next year. The delay was announced following a meeting last week between Nerja politicians and Spain’s central government where they agreed to move the project forward, “as fast as possible,” according to the council. It added, “the meeting took place in a very co-operative atmosphere for all those attending, with the sole purpose of putting into operation the Nerja treatment plant.”
The project to build the town’s new sewage treatment plant has been hit by a number of delays, after its builders faced bankruptcy and is now due for completion around two years after the initial deadline. The works, which began again in February following a 10-month break, will see a further collection point in the area surrounding Burriana beach which will take waste water to a treatment plant. The plant works, which had halted at 80 per cent completion last April, resumed again after the Ministry for the Environment received financial guarantees from the company responsible for the project, Isolux-Cosan-Corviam.

Residents, politicians and businesses had protested over delays in completing the works after the company went bankrupt last year despite assurances to finish the project in mid-2016. The €23.24 million plant is being funded by the Ministry of the Environment, who would not allow works to resume until it was able to confirm Isolux-Cosan-Corviam could honour their commitment. Nerja is the only large resort in Malaga to still pour untreated sewage into the sea, using underwater pipes on both Burriana and Torrecilla beaches. The underwater plant is now around 30 years old and said to be in bad condition.

Playas take top prize A NEW study has honoured Spain with the world’s best beaches award 2018. It has been named the country with the most Blue Flags, 696, than anywhere else in the world. The findings were revealed by the Association of Environmental Educa-
tion (ADEAC), the Spanish section Federation of Environment Education (FEE). The award was set up in 1987, and Spain has dominated the competition ever since, collecting more ‘quality beaches’ than Portugal, Greece, France
and Turkey. Factors taken into consideration by judges include beach safety, water quality, environmental information and management. The top three regions were Valencia which received 132 flags, Galicia with 109 and Cataluña which was awarded
101 flags. Despite being 186 miles away from the nearest coast, Madrid was given its first flag for the Virgen de la Nueve, which is located on the banks of San Juan reservoir close to the town of San Martin de Valdeiglesia.

Floods strike Spain CARS were washed away and houses left underwater last weekend after flash floods ripped through parts of Spain
one week after 13 people died following storms in Mallorca. Red alerts were issued in parts of Andalucia and Malaga Province following some of the worst floods ever recorded. Finance overhaul agreed SPAIN’S political parties have delivered their conclusions to the Commission for the Investigation of the Financial Crisis, which has lasted a year and a half. The PSOE, the PP, Ciudadanos, Podemos and the PNV agree that poor supervision has been a key factor, and are calling for radical changes. They recommend that the Bank of Spain monitors the solvency of banks, insurers and securities firms, while the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) controls the

THE Bank of Spain has called for a thorough investigation into international payments carried out using Blockchain technology, as it believes that certain elements are capable of making transactions efficient, fast and transparent. The bank particularly highlighted distributed ledger technology (DLT) as having great potential for the Spanish financial system. However, it did add that in order for DLT to be practical and efficient within the European financial system, its implementation should be centralised.

According to data recently released by the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), only 14.8 per cent of high-level positions are held by females. This is far from the target set for 2020 by the Code of Good Governance, which envisions women having 30 per cent of the share. The 14.8 per cent figure corresponds to 156 women in senior management positions in
listed companies. A gender gap is even higher among companies that have a turnover of less than €500 million, with the figure at only 19.9 per cent. Acerinox, Merlin Properties and Siemens Gamesa all have no female representatives on their boards, while ACS, BBVA, Grifols, Naturgy and Sacyr have less than 10 per cent. By contrast, Colonial and Red Electrica had the high proportion, at 50 per cent.

Riu to reap dividends THE company behind Dublin’s Gresham Hotel last year paid a €3 million dividend to new Spanish owners the Riu Group. Accounts just filed for the business also show that the company behind the hotel made a €4.9 million operating profit in 2017 on revenue of €17.6 million. The directors of the Gresham firm, who include Riu CEO Luis Guell, noted that while revenue and
profits at the iconic hotel on O’Connell Street fell last year, it is anticipated that the figures will improve. The latest set of accounts show that the Gresham generated €13.6m in revenue from room sales last year, and €3.5m from food and bar sales. The Riu group paid €92m for the Gresham, after the hotel had been put up for sale earlier that year by Nama.

Money rules the world
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT YET again we see a bunch of arrogant, socalled world leaders assassinate someone who disagrees with their policies. I think this rather bears out my recent column on governments stopping at nothing to eliminate any individual or group that may threaten their positions or control. However, what worries me about these two recent murders, is the almost unbelievable incompetence of those who organised these utterly despicable ‘hits.’ If their government’s level of intelligence is to be judged by these glaringly flawed acts of murder, it makes me extremely nervous regarding any decisions they may need to make on world issues. Mind you, I was more surprised with Putin’s botched assassination efforts than the Saudis. I did credit the Russian hierarchy as having a bit more savvy than the arrogant bunch who reign supreme over the sandy wastelands of Saudi Arabia. Having lived amongst them for some eight years, I can tell you that the only thing they have truly learned from the 21st century is that their money can buy virtually anything. I do feel however, that with the recent atrocious act of cruelty, against an unfortunate journalist who wanted nothing more than legal papers for his upcoming marriage, they may have just underestimated the intelligence of

What they failed to realise, in their barely disguised threats to disrupt world oil supplies should their explanations not be accepted, is that unlike Russia, heavy sanctions would have them on their knees within in months. They manufacture nothing, grow nothing of
note and the heaviest work they are prepared to do is lift a pen to sign some lucrative deal or other. Without their imports, they would very soon be made to realise that you can’t eat oil or weapons of war. Having said that, you can rest assured that it will all sort itself out sooner or later. Money
still rules the world and is far more important than the life of the occasional rogue journalist or alleged traitor (or the sacrifice of those they set up to do the job!). In fact to these people, wealth is more important than millions of lives, as long as the results cement their positions of power. Mark my words, the faceless money-men who really run the planet, are burning the midnight oil and puffing frantically on their ‘Double Coronas’ as we speak! I’m rather more worried about the America/Russia nuclear treaty situation. With two highly arrogant individuals of somewhat flaky intellect in charge of their respective big red buttons, I fear we could find ourselves back in the dangerous situation we experienced in the Cold War/Cuban crisis of the 60’s. This time it is far more volatile. Iran, India, North Korea, Israel and Pakistan are now all nuclear powers. In the event of conflict between the East and West, any one of them, under the misapprehension that they could somehow be the last man standing, could bring down the apocalypse the Bible warns against. TECH FOR THE TIMID I WAS assaulted by aural barbed wire in the cinema the other day. One minute there I was, minding my own popcorn, the next I was savaged by verbal incontinence from a patron on his phone. As mobiles breed like a nuclear reactor (five billion phones now and growing fast), there are inevitably some downsides. From relying on messengers with cleft sticks just a couple of aeons ago, we want 24/7 communication, and we want it now. Mobiles are everywhere - especially everywhere they shouldn’t be, like in the hands of inattentive drivers at 120 kph - competing with the muzak in restaurants and rammed down our ears in public spaces. Perhaps they’ve even made communication too easy. In Denmark for instance, the advent of the mobile has inundated emergency services like those run by animal protection agencies. It’s all too easy to phone while out walking, just to report a cow

looking cold. I spent much of my youth in Africa, where the traditional local aspiration was a bicycle and a radio. Ah, simpler times, when later even the impoverished gardener we used to help out by providing ‘piece work’ had a mobile phone better than mine. With the world in our pockets, these days we’ve got Big Brother everywhere at every time. Wherever we go to get away from it
all, we take it right there with us. And we almost never, ever, switch the things off - except overnight, and not always then if you’re a chronically sleep-deprived teenager. One study says that we check our phones on average every 12 minutes. Two in five adults look at their phones within five minutes of waking, while a third check them just before falling asleep, accord-
ing to the report. Guilty as charged m’lud, at least on the second two. A high percentage (71 per cent) say they never turn off their phone and 78 per cent say they couldn’t live without it. The average daily time spent on a smartphone is two hours 28 minutes, rising to over three hours for 18 to 24-year-olds. As one pastor noted recently; ‘These days it’s quite something if people switch off their phones while they’re getting married, or on their deathbed.’ Certainly the march of the mobile is unstoppable and even beneficial to society; in rural areas it’s often cheaper to issue mobiles than to wire long and difficult terrain with landlines. But whether we are really any better off being permanently within reach of family, friends and employers is something only you the user can decide. Don’t even think of phoning to tell me, though.
PHONING will soon be the one thing we don’t actually do with our phones, it seems. Although smartphone usage is rocketing, voice-calling drops by several per cent each year, and voicemail as a concept is all but dead. Millennials in particular think that calls are too intrusive, actually repelled by the idea of making or taking voice calls when a text will do nicely instead. So last year, for the first time, texting, tweeting and other social media, chat and other ‘indirect’ contacts, overtook the traditional voice call, with more than 35 per cent of interactions now in digital format. The trend was summed up neatly in an automatic call response I got from my nephew: ‘You’ve reached […....…..]. No one answers phone calls any more, send me a text.’

LOVE him or loathe him, there’s no way you can ignore Donald Trump. Or what’s said or written about his presidency - especially the so-called Russia connection. But why does he behave the way he does? If he’s innocent of any possible complicity, why does he keep acting as though he’s guilty? If he or his staff played absolutely no part in Russian election interference, why did he sack the FBI director James Comey, an own goal that led to the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller? Then there are his business links to Russia and the millions of dollars that reportedly ended up in his property empire from Russian sources. There is, too, that notorious Trump Tower meeting at which Donald Trump Jr allegedly expected to come by some scandal about Hillary Clinton from Russian sources. And there’s Trump himself, who has criticised America’s closest allies and publicly humiliated his FBI, but only ever speaks warmly of Putin, America’s foremost adversary. How are the votes weighted? Our community has 27 units of which 14 are villas on plots and 13 are attached row houses. The community has voted that all homeowners pay an equal share of the costs. One of our owners has now stipulated that the community fees per unit should be ‘As the law says.’ In other words, they should be assigned to each unit according to the coefficient of ownership of the property. What are the voting rights when the fees are charged according to the coefficient? The law provides that votes are decided by a ‘double majority.’ This means that both individual owners and the weight of their shares must be considered. ‘To me… To you’ Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I PURCHASED a pedometer for the ever suffering Mrs S for her birthday at her request. When she opened it and asked me to set it up she also handed me the booklet that had all the instructions in about 10 different languages. Well, I have to tell you, it was impossible - not because I didn’t know any of the 10 languages but because the writing was so small that it could not possibly be read. I don’t wear glasses, not even for reading, and I even tried with a magnifying glass and I still couldn’t work out what the instructions said. This has happened to me a few times recently. I challenge you to pick up any toothpaste box, deodorant can or, come to think of it anything in that size box, can or bottle and read the instructions on the back. So why? In their eagerness to create new and fancy products, companies very often overlook the optical needs of their older consumers. Sometimes that oversight is just a small daily annoyance. But, in some cases, it can also have potentially dangerous consequences. What if, as in many cases, there is something important that needs to be passed on regarding a potential safety issue? Regulations and lawyers have helped turn boxes, bottles and instruction
manuals into a fine-print nightmare by demanding so much information that the print must be tiny to accommodate it all. Otherwise, the packaging and manuals would be too big and costly. But that doesn’t help me or other oldies trying to read the darned things. Another reason is the young designers themselves. Young designers want to reinvent the world, but they have none of the problems of eyesight challenges. So it’s very difficult for them to imagine why fine print should be an issue. Having said that I bet some of them struggle too. Then, of course, a lot of companies are trying to go global and that means trying to fit text in several languages into one document or one bottle to meet each country’s regulations. I’m not even sure if there is a minimum size font they have to use. There is no point in complaining to any of the big companies because they don’t give a monkey’s but I am tempted to have a little try in contacting a few smaller companies to see what they say. I know it was a few weeks ago that Barry Chuckle of the Chuckle Brothers died but it made me think - I don’t believe anyone that has ever picked up a bit of furniture in their house to move it hasn’t uttered the now immortal phrase, ‘To me… To you.’ Not the funniest line ever but I’d love a Euro for every time a member of the public has used it. mikesenker@gmail.com

Man-size tissues at the ready TV COUCH CRITIC by Adam Whalley-Lewis …OR should that be ‘non gender specific, large tissues at the ready,’ well, whatever you call them, we needed them on Sunday evening when BBC1’s drama The Cry came to an end. It seems to have been running for much longer than four weeks and what a journey Joanna and Alistair have been on. Do you remember the scenes on the flight to Australia and the harrowing intrusion of the Press? I won’t give away the ending, just in case you were doing something else on Sunday, you know, like trying to save your finca from a Biblical storm, but enough to say Stella Gonet (Alistair’s Mum, Elizabeth) steals the show. You can binge watch The Cry on BBC iPlayer. Whilst BBC1 were concluding things down under, ITV were ensuring that Monday’s chat at the water cooler wouldn’t be dull, by showing the second instalment of Butterfly. Max is now Maxine and all Hell is breaking out. Two scenes stood out on Sunday, the brilliant Alison Stead-
CRYING SHAME: BBC1’s The Cry came to an end on Sunday evening. man (granny) declaring that Maxine is no grandson of hers - quite right granny, Maxine is now your granddaughter and secondly, Dad Stephen calling out the school bullies by reminding them that knocking someone out in order to protect a loved one from a hate crime is all right in his book. This is hard hitting stuff, tackling a subject most of us know little about, whilst pushing some TV boundaries too. Episodes one and two are available on the ITV Hub, episode three is on ITV next Sunday.
Strictly not mentioning THAT kiss, Come Dancing continued over the weekend. Bruno was off doing something else, so Alfonso Ribeiro joined the judges and made a big impression. As much as we love Bruno, Alfonso was a hit, so I hope that whatever Mr T was doing was worth it because the Fresh Prince star looked really comfortable in the fourth judge’s chair. Vicki and Graziano left the show on Sunday. Let’s hope Bruno is allowed back this weekend for the Halloween special.
I’m not much of a fan of breakfast shows on TV, Radio 4 does it for me, but ITV’s Good Morning Britain rattled a few cages last week and this time it wasn’t Piers Morgan who had the masses screaming at their TV over the cornflakes (or wheatgerm toast with honey, depending on your post code) no, this time it was Ben and Charlotte who ignited the blue touch paper and then failed to retire to a safe distance. Ben and Charlotte were discussing Disney movies being banned or rewritten to reflect ‘modern women’ with two experts (where do they find these people?) both of whom liked the sound of their own voices way too much. We didn’t reach a conclusion, Twitter went crazy and I have reported Prince Charming to the Guardia Civil for being a non-feminist. I know where I stand on this topic, but I don’t want to risk overloading the postal service by saying any more. Looking ahead (I haven’t forgotten, Caroline) The Great Model Railway Challenge continues on Channel 5 on Friday - no more info needed really, Channel 4 is Standing up to Cancer, again on Friday and if you are in the mood for a late night movie, Deepwater Horizon is on CH4 on Sunday night. THE recent trend towards healthy, glowing complexions has also seen a move away from traditional ‘scrub’ type exfoliators to their slightly more sophisticated chemical cousins. Although the words ‘acid peel’ may bring to mind horror stories of red, angry skin, many new formulas created using natural plant or sugar acids can be gently effective. What’s more, because acids ‘gobble’ up dead skin cells rather than simply sloughing them off, they can provide a multitude of additional benefits, including higher cell turnover, increased collagen production, reduction in hyperpigmentation from sun damage (definitely a plus in Spain) and improvement in skin tone. Skin peels use one or more acids and come in a variety of forms, from toners to masks and skin pads to serums. The chemicals used range from glycolic acid derived from sugar, to malic acid from apples, and citric acid from fruit. There is also salicylic acid, a very strong and drying form of acid derived from plants. This is generally only advised for topical use, for example on a blemish rather than all over the face.

In contrast, one of the gentlest acids, lactic acid, is derived from milk and provides a very light exfoliation. In fact, for an all-over gentle body exfoliation you can simply add a small amount of powdered milk to your bath (just don’t mind the slight dairy smell!). So are acid peels for you? Unless you suffer from eczema or another skin condition, or have particularly sensitive skin, you can generally find a peel gentle enough to work for you. The less sensitive your skin is - and the longer you have been using acids - the stronger the formula you will be able to use. Sensitive and normal skin will benefit from the gentlest of peels in the form of a toner or serum, such as Pixi Glow Tonic which offers a mixture of gentle acids from €12 and promises to ‘reveal a brighter, glowing complexion.’ Oily, acne-prone or mature skins may be able to take slightly stronger formulas such as the Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel pads, from €16.50, which claims to lessen, ‘depth of lines,’ and reduce, ‘visibility of pores,’ as well as getting to work on sun damage. Back in matte FOR more than a year now the hottest beauty trend has been for glowing, youthful looking skin. True democracy more complicated DEMOCRACY, well now we dream of that, all of us in our hearts, but the ruling on the case where Northern Irish bakers refused to bake a cake with a gay theme (Leapy Lee Issue 1737), was not democratic as I see it. The bakery is in the business of baking cakes, what the required writing on the cake has to do with the cake making business is beyond my understanding, it was just a personal choice similar to Aunt Bridget’s birthday. Real democracy would not get involved with such nonsense. We are all in this life together, but when we side against ‘the other’ it leads to dreadful outcomes as what else is war? If we continue to think with ideas of majorities versus minorities we will never understand democracy or what it is attempting to be - that simplification is just majority rules which in its truest sense is not actually what democracy means. Home ownership as popular as ever
A
CCORDING to a study by Vía Célere, a property developer specialising in building and managing residential assets, 74 per cent of Spaniards own their own home, with Andalucia (85 per cent), Aragon (76 per cent) and Asturias (75 per cent) leading the way. In contrast, the data show that 21 per cent of Spaniards live in rented accommodation. By age range, young people between 25 and 34 years old are those who opt to rent to a greater extent, while the Canary Islands (37 per cent), Cataluña (29 per cent) and Galicia (26 per cent), are the autonomous communities with the highest proportion of renters. The study also shows that 73 per cent of those who live on rent have thought about buying a home. Even so, they acknowledge that they encounter barriers that prevent them from buying, such as lack of money (25 per cent), an

unstable work life (24 per cent), a reluctance to sign a mortgage (18 per cent) and the impossibility of obtaining financing (17 per cent). Thirty-eight per cent of homes owned were bought between 2000 and 2009,
while 37 per cent were purchased before 2000. In addition, six out of 10 Spaniards indicate that the purchase price of their current home was less than €150,000. Some 84 per cent of Spaniards say they feel quite or very satisfied with their
current home, with Madrid and Andalucia being the best-positioned communities in this regard (91 per cent). Location (68 per cent) and price (64 per cent) appear to be the most important factors when choosing a home, although environmental services and construction quality also play a very important role. Flats (68 per cent), followed by villas or houses (22 per cent) are the most demanded type of residence in Spain. In terms of the size and typology of Spanish households, 46 per cent live in dwellings between 81 and 120 m2 and 50 per cent say they live in a newly built dwelling. The possibility of personalising the dwelling is the characteristic for which 74 per cent of Spaniards would be willing to pay a higher price, followed by an energy rating A (73 per cent) and a large kitchen (70 per cent). Common areas are also very attractive when it comes to choosing a residence. Having a park, a dog area and a bar nearby is highly valued by buyers.

IN 1865 the British government introduced the Locomotive Act, which required each vehicle to have three people on board: a driver, a stoker for the boiler, and a man walking ahead with a red flag to warn people.
Bloodhound out of breath THE British land speed record (LSR) attempt has run out of financial road and gone bust. Supersonic land vehicle Bloodhound requires another €28 million to guarantee funding for future record attempts, up to and including eventually going for 1,000mph on an 11.8-mile track at Hakskeen Pan in South Africa’s Northern Cape. The administrator is FRP Advisory LLP and Andrew Sheridan, its joint administrator, acknowledges the groundbreaking nature of the Bloodhound project. “Administration provides some breathing space to identify an investor who will bring the guaranteed funding, impetus and expertise required to drive the project,” he said. “The €28 million the Bloodhound requires to break the
land speed record is a fraction of the cost of, for example, finishing last in a Formula 1 season or running an America’s Cup team.” It was always going to be an uphill task, both technically and financially. The project to build the 14metre 135,000 thrust horsepower jet and rocket-powered car has been overseen by Richard Noble, team founder and former LSR record holder. He and his co-founder and Bloodhound driver, Wing Commander Andy Green, have been full-time fundraisers since 2007 when the project was launched. Yet through endless public appearances, speeches to industry leaders and schoolchildren, meet and greets at conferences and endless press rounds, neither of them have flagged or

Many were called on in that time but few stepped up, though they have had crucial sponsorship and partnerships with Rolls-Royce, Castrol, Rolex, Cisco, Oracle and Geely, as well as the Ministry of Defence, which loaned expert staff and provided the EJ200.
The public too, have been inspired by the project, donating millions to have their name on the tail fin or to watch the first runs of the car at Newquay aerodrome last autumn. It was actually Paul Drayson, businessman, amateur racing driver and the then British Minister of Science back in 2009, who encouraged the duo to push on and try to
break 1,000mph. With major skills shortages hindering UK manufacturing companies, Drayson was also looking to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers with the ‘Apollo Effect.’ To that end, education was always key to the Bloodhound project and in its role as a contributor to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-
ematics (STEM) campaign, it has reached more than two million children since launch, including 120,000 UK schoolchildren a year. Even the low-level air-speed record, which is no longer contested, stands at ‘only’ 994mph. Unlike Formula 1, there are no restrictions on design, besides the stipulation for four or more wheels, two of which are required for steering. The rest is down to the imagination and creativity of the team, as well as the skill and bravery of the driver. Mark Chapman, Bloodhound’s chief engineer, has kept the team plugging on in the face of adversity, and said: “With the right support we have no doubt that the project will achieve its aims and could be racing for the record in as little as 10 months.”
Save a Porsche A RUST-BUCKET Porsche, hidden away for decades has emerged for sale for an eye opening €108,000-€130,000. The 1958, 1600 Super Speedster has been kept in storage
since 1983, leaving it covered in rust and in a state of total disrepair. However, RM Sothebys is in charge of the auction and is pitching it as a ‘prime example
for restoration.’ Originally built for the American market, the car is one of a select group to be made with a speedometer reading in miles rather than kilometres, and USspecification bumpers. Given the car’s current condition, its original colour is not listed, but a door stamp claims it once boasted a metallic silver finish. Though its early history is not known, the current owner purchased the motor in 1983 as a restoration project. But after sanding off the majority of the paint, they placed the car in storage in Dallas, Texas, where it would remain for more than three decades. The car has been off the road for so long it still boasts its 1983 Texas licence tag. The Speedster is mostly complete, but requires some serious work to get it back on the road. According to the seller, “its next owner can expect to replace any sheet metal in the usual areas, including floor plans, trunk floor and battery box.”

ALAVES briefly surged to the top of La Liga following Tomas Pina’s second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo. Midfielder Pina smashed home from close range in the 58th minute at Balaidos after the ball was laid back to him by Victor Laguardia. The Basque side, having rocketed from sixth in the league, moved a point clear of secondplaced Sevilla, although they have played a game more. Alaves have never won a major trophy and were in the third tier as recently as 2013. They will host Villareal on Sunday, while Celta Vigo will face Eibar on Saturday. However, their reign at the summit of Spanish football was short-lived as Barcelona claimed an impressive 4-2 home win over Sevilla. BROOKS KOEPKA is set to become world number one for the first time after winning the CJ Cup in South Korea. Koepka, who was named the PGA Tour’s player of the year earlier this month, carded an eight-under-par 64 on Sunday to finish on 21 under, four shots clear of fellow American Gary Woodland. The 28-year-old replaced his Ryder Cup teammate Dustin Johnson at the top of the rankings on Monday. “To be world number one is something I dreamed of as a kid,” said Koepka. “Everything I’ve done this year has been working, so I

SHADING IT: Raikkonen broke with convention to wear sunglasses on the podium. LEWIS HAMILTON missed out on the chance to claim a fifth world title when he finished third in a dramatic US Grand Prix. Mercedes let victory slip away by delaying a second pit stop as Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen earned his first win in more than five years. Hamilton’s title rival and Raikkonen’s teammate Sebastian Vettel looked to have handed the Briton the title early on when he spun battling with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen
also beat Hamilton, who will have to wait until the race in Mexico next weekend to have another chance of clinching the title. He leaves, Austin, Texas, with a 70-point lead over Vettel, who eventually finished fourth, with 75 available over the remaining three races. In a tense finish, Raikkonen, Verstappen and Hamilton were nose to tail and the Mercedes driver failed in his one opportunity to pass the Dutchman with three laps to go. In the end even doing that
would not have been enough to clinch the title for Hamilton, as Vettel passed the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas for fourth place on the penultimate lap. Mercedes’ strategy confusion let Vettel off the hook, after the German made another mistake in a season that has become defined by them. Hamilton said: “I thought we would be able to do better, but this was the best we could do. “We just have to keep working, keep pushing to the next race.”
