Wildfire stats Almeria hit hard by blazes
INFLAMED: Almeria suffered 33 wildfires this year. ALMERIA Province was among those in Andalucia most affected by wildfires this year with hundreds of hectares of forests and scrubland gutted by blazes, according to official data. Plan Infoca’s annual report on blaze outbrea k s i n t h e r e g i o n s tate d th at more than 364 hectares of land were burned during this year’s high risk period. The high risk period was declared over last Monday, having lasted four months. THREE people have died and 18 were reported missing after a boat carrying 56 migrants was shipwrecked off the coast of Almeria Province on Sunday. Coast guards were despatched to the Alboran Sea after receiving reports that th e b o a t h a d l e f t th e Moroccan town of Nador and was sailing for Spain. Data from Plan Infoca, Andalucia’s wildfire taskforce, showed that land burnt in Almeria accounted for more than 10 per cent of the land gutted by fires d u rin g the pe riod. The tota l amount of land affected by fires in Andalucia was almost 3,300 hectares. Plan Infoca said on Twitter in its last fire warning last Monday that people’s caution should not go away with the end of the high risk period. “It has been a pleasure to share information about the excellent work
done by all those who collaborate together on defending our natural heritage,” the agency said. Jose Fiscal, the Junta de Andalucia’s environment spokesperson, said Plan Infoca had undertaken ‘exceptional’ work throughout the high-risk period. Firefighters were called out a total of 33 times in Almeria Province, with blazes largely striking scrubland. The majority of fires affected areas of less than one hectare, according to Plan Infoca figures.

‘Scam’ trial A DEFENDANT due to be tried on charges of allegedly making more than €121,000 from false online sales faces up to nine years in prison if found guilty. Almeria’s Provincial Prosecutor’s Office claimed in its initial submissions to the courts that the defendant scammed customers out of thousands between May 2009 and December 2013. The defendant, along with two others, advertised products for sale online but did not ship them to buyers after taking their money, prosecutors added. The goods were priced at below market rates to deliberately entice customers to buy items which were allegedly ‘non-existent.’ The products advertised included computers, sound systems, high-end mobile phones and other electronic goods. The other two defendants each face jail terms of up to six years if convicted at the upcoming trial.

Stolen babies doctor walks free amidst appeal plans By Joe Gerrard PROSECUTORS have said they will appeal against a Madrid court’s ruling which found a doctor guilty over Spain’s historic stolen babies scandal, but spared him jail. Madrid’s provincial court convicted Eduardo Vela on all charges after he stood trial over claims he stole a baby and gave it to supporters of former dictator Francisco Franco in 1969. The 85-year-old was allowed to walk free after the trial because the legal limit for convicting him had expired. Madrid Public Prosecutors now plan to lodge an appeal with Spain’s Supreme Court in an effort to secure a sentence. Vela is the first person to stand trial over the stealing of an estimated 300,000 babies from their mothers to sell to families who supported Franco during his rule.

FREED: Vela was not jailed for stealing Madrigal (inset). The former gynaecologist was accused of taking Ines Madrigal from her real mother in 1969 and handing her to a 46year-old woman who raised her as her own child. Madrid’s provincial court convicted Vela on charges of unlawful detention, falsifying official documents and certifying a
non-existent birth at the trial last week. Judges said the 85-yearold’s guilt had been proved ‘indisputably’ and that it was ‘crystal clear’ Vela had forged documents to allow for the taking of Madrigal. The judgement went onto state that the defendant would not go to prison because the
‘statute of limitation,’ or time limit to press charges, had passed. Vela told the court he did not remember details of how his San Ramon clinic in Madrid had been run. Madrigal, from Murcia, said she now thought she would never know the identity of her real parents and that Vela would take
it with him to the grave. “I feel good because the judges acknowledged the theft, but of course I don’t agree with the statute of limitations point,” she said. Madrigal’s lawyer Guillermo Peña argued the statute did not apply in the case because she did not find out about the theft until 2010.

STUNNING: Albarracin was voted the most beautiful town in Spain. THIS village in the Aragon region has recently topped a list of the 30 most beautiful towns in Spain. Albarracin, in Teruel Province, saw off competition from almost 250 settlements from across the country in El Viajero’s online poll which ran from September 28 to October 2. T h e v o te w a s on villa ge s a nd towns with a population of 10,000 or under. Albarracin, with a population of
around 1,075, was named a National Monument in 1961 due to its historical and cultural heritage. The tow n is be lie ve d to ha ve been founded by the Muslim Moors sometime in the 10th century. The name Albarracin is thought to come from the Banu Razin dynasty who chose the town as the capital of its fiefdom from the early 11th century. The town passed into Christian hands after it was conquered by Pe-
ter III of Aragon in 1284 and fully incorporated into his kingdom in 1300. Albarracin’s old town is built on the slips of mountains near to the River Guadalaviar. It sits between the Albarracin to the north and the Montes Universales in the south. The town is home to several historic monuments including the Salvador Cathedral, the Alcazar de Albarracin, the Palacio Episcopal and walls built by the Moors.

Drugs bust OFFICERS with the National Police have seized hundreds of grams of heroin, cocaine and marihuana along with growing and processing equipment in six house raids in Roquetas de Mar. Police arrested seven people in connection with the probe and Almeria’s Fourth Court of Instruction has remanded six of them in custody.
Vote funds POLITICAL parties in Almeria Province will be eligible for subsidies of up to almost €318,780 from the Junta de Andalucia to spend on campaigns for regional elections this December. Almeria Province comes behind those of Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Malaga and Sevilla and ahead of Jaen and Huelva in public funding for Andalucia’s parties.

POLICE have raided several sites in Almeria Province as part of a nationwide investigation into a group who allegedly made some €25 million from illegally fishing for protected fish. Officers claimed the group operated in a total of 12 Spanish provinces and sold bluefin tuna caught in Maltese and Italian waters.

Fraud trial PROSECUTORS have requested a court in Almeria jail the ex-president of a boating club accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of euros from it for five years if found guilty. Prosecutors claimed in their initial submissions to Almeria Provincial Court’s Second Section that the defendant, Jose L G, took some €675,000 from the Real Club Nautico in Roquetas de Mar. The defendant was president of the club between 2005 and 2008.
Prosecutors claimed the ex-president took money from the club’s treasury and charged payments to its account that had nothing to do with its activities. Records of the payments were allegedly deliberately withheld. The defendant had also secured contracts for two companies to work with the club which had ties with members of his family, prosecutors added. The trial is due to take place at the court in Almeria City between November 19 and 22.

Road crash EMERGENCY SERVICES personnel were called out to Pulpi last Friday after a crash involving two vehicles which left four people injured, including a teenage girl. Andalucia’s 112 emergency services line was alerted to the crash at around midday. It took place at kilometre three of the A-1205 in the town. The accident took place when two cars collided into the front of each other on the road, according to the emergency services.

Medical personnel were despatched along with Guardia Civil officers, as well as those from the Local Police. Road maintenance workers were also called in. Emergency services sources said those injured were taken to the Inmaculada Hospital in HuercalOvera. They included two men aged 18 and 35, a 36-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, the 112 emergency services line said on Twitter. The severity of their injuries is unknown.

Space Race link TWO Spanish technicians have spoken about their time working for NASA on the Apollo 11 Moon landing ahead of the release of a film based on the mission. Carlos Gonzalez and Jose Manuel Grandela both worked at the Fresnedillas de la Oliva tracking station in the Madrid region in the 1960’s. Both were there during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 and Gonzalez controlled its communications. Gonzalez and Grandela both recently attended an event at the Astrobiology Centre in the Madrid region held to mark the premiere of The First Man. The film, starring Ryan Gosling as first man on the Moon Neil Armstrong, dramatises the Apollo 11 mission and is set to be released next year for its 50th anniversary. Gonzalez said he and Grandela had a privileged position because they could listen to conversations between the Apollo 11 crew and mission control in Houston before anyone else. Both were the first people to hear Armstrong confirm he and Buzz Aldrin had touched down on the Moon with the words: ‘The eagle has landed.’ Gonzalez said Armstrong wanted to step onto
the Moon no matter what happened and added he remembered an exchange between the astronaut and Houston when told he had to wait. “I’ve been preparing for this for years, I’ve travelled 400,000 kilometres, I’ve gone down to the Moon with certain difficulties and now you tell me I have to sleep?” Gonzalez remembered Armstrong saying. “Houston had proposed to abort the mission but Armstrong took semiautomatic control and with Buzz Aldrin giving him altitude and speed data he landed with about 30 seconds’ worth of fuel to spare,” Gonzalez said. Gonzalez added he also remembered Armstrong asking how he had managed to stumble on his way out of the lunar module despite practising 300 times on Earth. Grandela, who was 23 at the time, said the mission was an important step in the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. “The mission unleashed an avalanche of innovations in engineering, informatics, materials and fuels from which all of humanity is benefiting today,” he said.

Solid as a Rock WHILST the UK continues to be in the midst of internal and external dispute over the increasingly imminent Brexit, spare a thought for the politicians in Gibraltar. At the end of the day, this tiny enclave at the tip of Spain has a voting population which is half the size of Wimbledon and from a pot of around 30,000 people has to find politicians who are capable of becoming involved in international negotiations. Happily, it would appear that Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, a barrister and QC is capable of entering this heady atmosphere and with the support of certain of his other ministers - including Deputy Chief Minister Garcia - has walked a difficult tightrope. Although the Spanish government is in theory committed to Spanish rule over the Rock, the change, firstly of Foreign Minister Margallo (who was a ‘sword rattling’ member of those who claim Gibraltar) and then the return to power of the PSOE Spanish Socialist Party has seen a less aggressive stance against Gibraltar in recent months. It is clear that in financial terms, Gibraltar has an exceptionally strong economy and is said to be the second largest employer of Spanish workers in the Campo de Gibraltar, beaten only by the Government of Andalucia. Despite all of the hard work that the Gibraltarians may put into the negotiations, at the end of the day, it’s the UK parliament and the remaining 27 member states of the EU who will actually decide the future of this British Overseas Territory. For what it’s worth however, those born in Gibraltar can currently move to the UK, unlike the citizens of that other territory, Hong Kong which was returned to China.

Water result A L M E R I A’ S D i p u t a c i o n has agreed to invest some €450,000 to improve water supply lines in towns in Almanzora and elsewhere in the province. Tu r r e , a s w e l l a s A l banchez, Benitagla and Sierro, are set to receive a share of the funding to update water infrastructure. The works are designed to guarantee the supply of water to homes in the towns. The works come as part of the Diputacion’s Water Infrastructure Plan, a province-wide project which has seen hundreds of thousands of euros spent on water works in Almeria. The works are being undertaken in collaboration with Galasa, a water management firm which runs part of the province’s supply network.

Rail works RAILWAY infrastructure body Adif has opened the bidding process for three contracts for works worth more than €367.5 million to the planned Murcia to Almeria high speed rail line including the building of bridges, tunnels and laying tracks.
Town damage repair THE Junta de Andalucia has allocated around €102,000 from its town works fund for repair works to facilities and infrastructure damaged by storms in Zurgena. Repair works to schools, walls and roads are among those planned for the town. The funding was unveiled by the Junta’s local administration spokesperson in Almeria Province Gracia Fernandez, who visited sites in Zurgena recently. Fernandez said funding for the works underscored the Junta’s commitment to aiding small towns with grants and funding. Andalucia is the only autonomous community in Spain that provides funding to towns unconditionally which allows them to set their own spending priorities, Fernandez added. “These works will serve as instruments of job creation and will positively impact on the welfare of locals and the area’s territorial cohesion.

Concrete drainage pipes are also set to be cleared on Avenida 19 de Octubre, with almost €17,280 allocated to the works. The Plaza del Barrio Chicago is also set to be repaved at a cost of more
than €17,986. Repair works are due to go ahead at the CEIP La Alfoquia school, costing almost €5,690. Almost €21,669 is set to be spent on repairing a wall at the entrance of Palaces, according to Junta sources.

Man held LOCAL POLICE officers have arrested an 18-yearold man in connection with an alleged assault on his disabled mother in Almeria City last Monday. Officers came upon the woman on Carrera del Mami and she claimed she had asked her son to leave the family home following an argument. He allegedly refused and then beat her. Police said the woman was found with bruises and she had taken shelter in a nearby business premises. Officers questioned the 18-year-old who told them he had argued with her but he denied assaulting her. He was arrested and taken to the city’s Provincial Police Station and the case remains ongoing.

Democracy exhibit THE Presidents of both of Spain’s houses of parliament have visited Almeria City to open an outdoor photography exhibit marking 40 years of democracy in the country. Ana Pastor, President of the Congress of Deputies, and Senate head Pio GarciaEscudero travelled to the provincial capital for the ‘40 years of democracy in Spain’ exhibition last Monday. The display features 40 pictures taken by Spain’s EFE News Agency of Spanish politicians, celebrities and other public figures since the country’s constitution was ratified in 1978. Almeria rubbish dump murder suspect arrested in Spain GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a man suspected of murdering his girlfriend and dumping her body in a landfill site. Officers arrested the Mauritanian at Madrid’s Adolfo Suaréz airport as he attempted to board a flight to his home country. The unnamed man is thought to have been trying to flee justice after ‘inconsistencies’ in his story led him to become chief suspect in a story that shocked the
seaside town of Roquetas del Mar in Spain’s Almeria Province. The body of a woman was found by a worker at the landfill site at Gador on September 27. A post-mortem examination revealed she had died a violent death. She had no personal effects, which made her identification difficult. But at the same time Guardia Civil in Roquetas were investigating a report of the disappearance of a Moroccan woman

made by her partner - the same man who has now been arrested. The cases were linked and a positive identification was made. Guardia Civil found inconsistencies in the boyfriend’s story and on further investigation discovered the victim was a prostitute and the man her pimp. A later search of his home found evidence which police say links him to the murder.

Jobless funding THE Junta de Andalucia has announced it will give Almeria some €4.3 million out of a €58 million regional fund to create around 6,000 jobs for unemployed workers aged between 45 and 55.
Road works SPAIN’S Development Ministry has tendered contracts worth €4.45 million for works to the 409 and 411 sections, at Copo and Santa Maria del Aguila respectively, of the A-7 motorway in Almeria Province with the aim of improving transport links.

Eco spending THE Junta de Andalucia has awarded a grant of more than €780,000 for several efficient energy projects in Cuevas del Almanzora. The money is set to be spent on five projects in the town, including upgrading street lights in central areas and installing solar panels. The Diputacion de Almeria is set to oversee the works, with the J u n t a ’s E n e rg y A g e n c y h a v i n g subsidised their cost by almost 70 per cent. Part of the funding has also come from the European Union’s (EU) Regional Development Fund. Marble industry spending CASH BOOST: The funding is set to benefit the marble industry.
THE Diputacion de Almeria has signed off plans worth around €1 million to boost the province’s marble industry, including works in Cantoria and Macael. Cantoria is set to receive funds worth €100,000 as part of the Diputacion’s Plan of Productive Spaces of the Marble Industry. Macael is due to see a spending boost of €274,000. A total of 473 warehouses across five industrial estates in Almeria Province are due to benefit from funds allocated to the plan. The plan is designed to modernise and repair sites and infrastructure in the marble industry. Some are decades old and are in need of extensive maintenance work to fix damage caused by their age. Oscar Liria, the Diputacion’s development spokesper-
son, said projects at industrial estates in Fines and Olula del Rio would improve the condition of buildings there and attract new start up firms. The Diputacion plans to repave some 40,000 square metres of roads in the Fines and Olula del Rio industrial estates. They have also tendered the contracts for projects in Cantoria and Macael, as well as in Purchena. The mayors of Fines and Olula del Rio said the projects were important for the marble industry and the local economies of their towns. The Diputacion’s financial backing would make completing the works easier, the officials added. Workers are set to clean and sweep the roads of the estates, repair potholes, repaint markings and create extra parking spaces as part of the works.

Tourism official: no-deal Brexit a ‘disaster’ By Joe Gerrard A SENIOR Spanish tourist official has said it would be a disaster for Spain if Britain left the European Union (EU) without a deal next year. Javier Pinanes, the head of Spain’s London tourism office, said there would be “really big” problems if a no-deal Brexit went ahead including for those travelling between the two countries. British people would probably opt not to travel to Spain or other countries in the EU if a no-deal meant the introduction of visas, flight changes and health insurance problems.
“For Spain it’s decisive. Britain is our main market. A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster,” he said. He added while speaking to members of the British travel industry association ABTA in Sevilla that hotels particularly on Spain’s coast and its islands were heavily linked to their customers. “I’m convinced there will be an agreement because it is in the common interest of Britain and the EU. “We received 19 million British people in 2017,” he said. British ambassador to Spain Simon Manley, also at the convention, said Westminster was working “day in, day out,” to secure a deal.
“Spain has got a lot of skin in this game,” he said. Manley added the British government is advising travel companies and holidaymakers on the consequences of a no-deal Brexit. “But the British government is also having to prepare for the worst,” he said. Several EU arrangements such as European Health Insurance and visa-free travel could be disputed or stop all together if Britain leaves the bloc without a deal. The British government stated last month some flights may also be disrupted because airlines would have to get individual permits to fly between Britain and
EU states. Mark Tanzer said politicians had “argued and dithered” over the withdrawal negotiations. “The future is unlikely to be a paradise but there’s no reason to believe it will be hell either,” Manley said. The warning comes as the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier said negotiators were working “day and night” to secure a Brexit deal. His comments come as an agreement over the status of Northern Ireland and its border with the Republic continues to stall efforts to reach a final agreement. Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29 2019.

Catalan prisoners By Joe Gerrard A HUMAN rights NGO has called on Spanish authorities to release two Catalan pro-independence activists a year after they were jailed in connection with the region’s secession attempt. Amnesty International said there was no justification for keeping Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart in custody ahead of their trial on rebellion charges. The charges levelled against the two are unfounded and should be dropped, the NGO added.
Fotis Filippou, of Amnesty International, said the ongoing detention of Sanchez and Cuixart unfairly restricted their rights to free speech and peaceful assembly. “Instead of taking the opportunity to end the detention of Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, the judicial authorities have perpetuated this injustice,” Fillippou said. The NGO’s comments come as the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court recently rejected two petitions calling for the release of the activists. Spain’s Constitutional Court also refused
to provisionally suspend the detention of Sanchez at least three separate times, Amnesty International said. Spain’s National Court ordered that Sanchez and Cuixart, the heads of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and the Omnium Cultural respectively, be remanded in custody last October. The move followed the Catalan independence referendum in the same month, with the poll having been previously declared illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court.

Rape law reforms POLITICAL leaders have agreed to change the law to demand expressed consent in sexual relations as part of the fight against violence of this kind against women. The pact between the government and political group Podemos will lead to a reform of the Criminal Code with the aim of ensuring that ‘if a woman does not say yes explicitly’ then it is not consensual sex. A formal document reportedly states that
‘the lack of expressed consent of the victim will become a key issue in sexual crimes.’ The debate was triggered by the ongoing La Manada case in Pamplona, involving an 18-year-old female who accused five men of rape. When the men were found guilty of sexual assault, rather than rape, protests were provoked across Spain, with groups and activists calling for reforms to the law.

THE Spanish government is turning to the Vatican in its bid to stop dictator Francisco Franco being buried at a famous Madrid cathedral, should his remains be exhumed. Deputy prime minister, Carmen Calvo will travel to Rome to meet with the Pope’s second in command Pietro Parolin, to discuss the matter with the heads of the Catholic Church. Last week, Franco’s family demanded his body be reburied at La Almudena Cathedral, next to the Royal Palace, which the government has argued would undermine the object of exhumation from the Valley of the Fallen. It is also feared the move would create a new pilgrimage site for the dictator’s supporters, posing a security risk. Socialist Party (PSOE) government officials would prefer he was moved to a less prestigious location, such as El Prado cemetery where his wife is buried. Flying into trouble COMPETITION regulators have launched a probe into a transatlantic pricing deal between British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines and Finnair. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating a series of commitments made by the quartet to the EU, which allow them to co-operate on pricing, capacity and schedules. The Atlantic Joint Business Agreement (AJBA) was struck in 2010 to address competition concerns raised by Brussels.

with American Airlines and Finnair has been bringing significant benefits to millions of travellers.” Shares in IAG fell 2.3 per cent after the news to 577 pence, their lowest for a year. The CMA said that it decided to study the partnership as commitments made by the airlines under a European Union competition probe from 2010 will expire in 2020. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT HAVE to say I was absolutely delighted when an Irish bakery won their Supreme court case this week. The Belfast bakery ‘Ashers’ had objected to the message that gay activist Gareth Lee had requested for a decorated cake. The message, ‘Support Gay Marriage,’ was considered by the company to be inconsistent with their religious doctrine. They, quite rightly in my opinion, objected to a law that decreed they do something they didn’t believe in. This week the Supreme Court agreed and ruled that the refusal by the bakery to carry out their wishes was not discriminatory and subsequently dismissed the case. Now before I get deluged with hate mail and messages accusing me of homophobia and Lord knows what else, I am NOT homophobic. I have absolutely nothing against people’s sexual preferences, or indeed anything they have, do not have, or would like to have - either between their legs or their ears. What I am against is the increasing difficulty the majorities have in standing up for what they believe in. This Christian, heterosexual run establishment, did not agree with the sentiment of the message required by the person who ordered the cake. To my mind, (on one of their own products) they had every right to refuse to advertise something

it. But these activists were a minority, weren’t they? Once again, the minority were pandered to by the state. Although the Christian owners eventually won their case, it’s been through a number of courts, taken four years and cost somewhere around a quarter of a million pounds of taxpayers’ money, plus another £200,000 provided by a Christian trust. To me, the attitude of the authorities toward majorities has become unacceptable and utterly undemocratic. Minorities are being allowed to run slipshod and virtually
unchecked through our traditions, our culture, our laws and plain old common sense. They have come to realise perfectly well, that all they need to do is scream ‘discrimination’ or ‘offended’ and the authorities will fall over backward to cater to their every whim - however unacceptable or utterly biased against the majority they may be. The lunatics are indeed taking over the asylum and unless those at the top get their act together and start using some common sense, I see complete disaster looming on an ever-increasing scale. Discrimination; a stifling of free speech, and unfair bias, are completely unacceptable in this day and age. When they are constantly used against the majority, purely because they happen to be a majority, it can only ultimately lead to a complete disintegration of our society as we know it. Get a grip. Minority rule belongs in the far reaches of Korea or Corbyn’s beloved leftwing states. We live in a democracy. Nick Horne The Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England An auction in Hong Kong during April saw competitive bidding drive the valuation of a Famille-Rose porcelain bowl to euro 24.7 million. It’s happened again. At a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on the 3rd of October 2018 the Yamanaka Reticulated Vase recently discovered in a Private Japanese Collection sold for Euro 19,749,200 (US$19,009,102 £14,637,024) almost three times its pre-sale estimate euro 5.6 7.7million or US$6.4-8.9 million. Bidding opened at HK 40 million (euro 4.4 million) and rose steadily as five bidders competed for the vase. The Yamanaka is a pair to the famed Bainbridge Vase which hit global headlines when it sold in the UK in 2010, this example had remained; dormant and unknown to the wider world, in Japan for almost a century since its acquisition in 1924 following a public showing with Yamanaka in New York in 1905. Carved and exquisitely painted with four pairs of fish below Rococo-inspired motifs on a yellow sgraffiato ground. Sgraffiato a technical term used to describe the application to an unfired ceramic body of two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze, and then ‘scratching’ so as to reveal parts of the underlying layer. The exceptional famille-rose reticulated vase is skilfully modelled with an inner blue-and-white
Size is not the point! vase. It ranks among the most complex porcelains ever commissioned by the 18th Century Emperor of China, Qianlong. This porcelain masterpiece is not only a reflection of the exacting standards on technical proficiency but also the insatiable demand for stylistic novelty at the court of the Qianlong Emperor, but also an aesthetic representation of the cultural confluence of East and West at its pinnacle in Chinese history. Reticulated yagcai vases with double walls represent one of the last great innovations introduced by Tang Ying, the imperial kilns’ creative supervisor. When peering through the outer shell, the Emperor would have had a real surprise, since nothing on the outside of this vase would have prepared him for what there is inside. Also at auction that day was an outstanding Falangcai Poppy Bowl, arguably one of the greatest examples of Qianlong falangcai porcelain in private hands, also achieved the exceptional price of Euro 18,778,500 /
US$21,600,158 / £16,632,138. Unassuming in its beauty, the bowl is exquisitely enamelled on the exterior with an intricate design of poppies issuing from rockwork, with a butterfly depicted fluttering gracefully overhead, a fourteen-character poem, and the interior with a finger-citron, apple and cherries. Some of the most valuable and valued objects are diminutive, rare and exquisite.

TECH FOR THE TIMID CALL me old-fashioned, but I’ve never seen the attraction of watching the latest blockbuster on a six-inch smartphone screen. Hey, even just seeing the screen at this stage of my life is tough enough, never mind actually identifying Bruce Willis on it as he saves the world (again). With ‘content’ hurled at our multitude of devices these days, the trick is getting it onto something which won’t be an optician’s nightmare to watch. Enter the current buzzword: streaming. There are two basic flavours: either from the internet to your device, or from your device to another device. Let’s tackle the second of these. How do you get your ‘content’ from, say, your computer, onto your TV screen? Many new TVs can take USB drives or SD cards directly. If not, the good news is that it’s a doddle with just a cable - as long as your computer is modern enough to have an HDMI socket.

Often barely the size of a cigarette packet (but happily without the health warning), most will handle virtually any current format you throw at them, either from a USB drive or SD card. One final option is to ‘tether’ your smartphone by cable or wirelessly, directly to your TV, ‘mirroring’ its content onto the TV screen. The bad news: for now this still only works with really, really, really high-end smartphones. Which can cost more than a whole new media-capable TV and never mind the popcorn.

The Beeb is splashing out on a big-budget adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel about class warfare in the streets of Paris, although without the songs made famous in the West End musical. New photos show off the incredible cast for this version of Les Misérables, which includes The Mortal Instruments’ Lily Collins as the doomed mother Fantine and David Oyelowo as the cruel police inspector Javert.

Dial S for stupidity Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man OK lots of things this week - I have had my iPhone for a few years - it’s a 6S Plus. To be honest it’s fine but I didn’t bother with the iPhone 7, 8 or 9. Was there a 9? But the new ‘X’ - pronounced ‘ten’ got some good reviews. Well, the X S max to be precise. As an aside it got me thinking - were MI 5 and MI 6 upgrades by the UK government from MI 1 and MI 2? Sorry, back to the phone. I decided to go and check it out. I went to the local Vodafone store. Now, I have been with them for years and years - probably over 14 in fact - when it was Airtel so overall I am pretty satisfied with them. I spoke to the sales assistant in the store and asked if he had one in stock which he did. He explained that it was €1,200 for the top model but it could be paid for in instalments if I sign a new contract for two years. I don’t have a contract at the moment but I said, ‘OK, that’s doable - can I see one please?’ He replied, ‘No, I can show you one in a box but you can’t take it out as I can’t take the plastic cover off the box.’ ‘Don’t you have a display model?’ ‘No.’ ‘So I am meant to buy a phone
and sign a two-year contract without being able to handle the actual product I’m buying?’ It’s pretty unbelievable because once I sign I’m committed. Yes, I could go to the Apple store and no doubt see one live but how stupid not to have one in every store. I didn’t buy one. Something interesting I have noticed is that so many of the top companies now don’t actually make anything. Facebook, Amazon, Uber etc have taken over from so many of the manufacturing companies. In fact 10 or 15 years ago most didn’t even exist. The majority are all online controlled. Bricks and mortar companies are getting smashed to pieces by these tech created companies and, on top of that, is the danger involved. I mean, this week it was announced that 50 million Facebook accounts had been compromised. Fifty million!!! Will they get sued or fined? I read about the hacking but have seen nothing following it up. Facebook was started by a university geek with the sole purpose of picking up girls and now it is one of the most powerful companies in the world. That cannot be right. How about this - instead of testing products on animals, how about testing them on people that don’t say thank you after you hold the door open for them? Or after you let them out in traffic? ‘HOTELS and restaurants are trying to cheat their way to the top of TripAdvisor amid claims that as many as a third of the reviews are fake,’ according to a recent undercover investigation. Independent analysis of tens of thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor reportedly demonstrates that supposedly top-rated B&Bs at tourist hotspots, for instance, have almost twice as many ‘fake’ reviews as lower-ranked accommodation. Two thirds of reviews posted about top B&Bs in some hotspots are thought to be fishy. Add to this a recent landmark legal ruling in Italy that saw one fraudulent online reviewer sentenced to jail after the court ruled that writing fake, paid-for reviews under a false identity was ‘criminal conduct’ in the first convicted case of ‘review fraud’. TripAdvisor is a site that encapsulates the internet conundrum. Its benefits to the paying public are obvious but its misuse can threaten or even wipe out good, honest, small businesses. My take is that TripAdvisor is a useful tool. But obviously it’s only as good as the

But it would help if TripAdvisor made greater efforts to weed out fakes and ensure that the reviewer is genuinely ‘genuine’. So we have fake news and fake reviews - what’s next, fake columnists? At 9.15 at night as I was passing the salt lakes at Santa Pola, a car was parked by the old tower without any headlights on. As I passed he pulled out and sat very close to my bumper, only using his headlights to flash me, which he did constantly. He only used his headlights to flash me, all the rest of the time his car was in darkness, and I was unable to determine the make of car or his registration number. On the single lane part of the road he continuously tried to overtake me on the wrong side of the road, ie on the curb side rather than the overtaking lane. I must admit I have heard of the means used by the local highway robbers and the behaviour of this driver was exactly the same as that recorded previously in the local press. Each time he tried to get in front of me, I admit that I put my foot down to prevent him getting in front of me and cutting me up, or forcing me to stop. I had determined to go to the police at Guardamar, but when we reached the lit section of

Clean and clear IT doesn’t seem to matter how old we get, blackheads can always make an unwanted appearance on our faces and bodies. Even long after fine lines and wrinkles have set in, our bodies can somehow still produce enough oil to create those annoying little black dots, often on our noses and cheeks. And while blackheads caused when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil and dirt are harmless, they can certainly be irritating. Unfortunately, there is no permanent way to remove blackheads, although thankfully with good skin hygiene and regular extraction their appearance can be lessened. An important first step is making sure skin is cleansed both thoroughly and regularly. Many dermatologists recommend cleaning skin both morning and evening with a mild cleanser. DESPITE years of speculation to the contrary, scientists have now discovered gout is not caused by poor diet. The painful and potentially debilitating condition affects around one in 40 people in the UK, causing inflammation of the joints. It was thought wine, red meat and beer could be to blame for the disease but researchers have discovered that is not the case. A study by the University of Otago, New Zealand, found genetics were instead to blame for how likely a person was to develop the illness. The researchers analysed 16,760 people living in the United States who had European ancestry, taking blood samples to determine their blood urate levels. Urate is a salt produced in the body when it breaks down compounds called purines. High urate levels known as hyperuricaemia - are associated with a higher risk of having gout as uric crystals build up in a person’s joints causing inflammation. The study found while some foods such as beer, wine, spirits, potatoes, meat, eggs, and cheese were able to raise urate levels, it only did so by 1 per cent.

If any blackheads are still stubbornly lingering, you can encourage them out by applying strips which can be found in supermarkets and pharmacies, which can remove between 15 and 20 per cent of blackheads. Finally, if all else fails, it may be worth booking in for a professional treatment with a beautician or dermatologist who can gently remove blackheads for you and recommend products to prevent them returning.

The first thing you can do to protect your hair - after using a good quality shampoo and conditioner suited to your particular hair type - is to dry your hair as quickly as possible after it has been washed. Wet hair is much more fragile than when it is dry because its cuticles swell as

A bit of what you love THEY say a bit of what you love is good for you, and it turns out that could be true. New research has found fatty cheese, yoghurts and butter could actually lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, despite previous dire warnings about the health risks of these dairy products. A team of scientists at the University of Cambridge has found those who ate dairy-rich foods, including cream and fullfat milk, had a 30 per cent lower risk of the lifethreatening disease than those who ate less of these foods. The scientists are now suggesting dairy products shouldn’t be discouraged, as they are on some diets, and that we should be doing more research into their possible health benefits. The comprehensive study involved results from more than 63,600 adults over the course of 20 years from 16 different research projects. The participants were all measured for dairy-fat markers - ones which show how much dairy has been consumed in the body - before the
study began. All participants were free from type 2 diabetes when the studies began, although by the time of the follow-up, more than 15,100 had developed the disease. At the end of the research, scientists found those with higher levels of dairy-fat markers had a 30 per cent lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The study’s lead author, Dr Fumiaki Imamura from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, explained, “our results provide the most comprehensive global evidence to date about dairy fat biomarkers and their relationship with lower risk of type 2 diabetes.” He added, “we’re aware that our biomarker work has limitations and requires further research on underlying mechanisms, but at the very least, the available evidence about dairy fat does not indicate any increased risk for the development of type 2 diabetes.” The scientists see they would now like to explore whether the method of preparation of dairy products has any impact on their health benefits.

TIME Magazine named Carles Puigdemont and Donald Trump as possible candidates for the 2018 Nobel Peace prize. Fortunately common sense triumphed over delirium but Time apparently thought Puigdemont was in with a chance after Ladbrokes gave him 12-1 for organising an ‘unofficial’ pro-independence referendum. This was so unofficial that it resulted in police charges and many Catalans obeyed the old dictum ‘Vote early and vote often’, on October 1 last year. But Puigdemont was never more than an accidental president. In the 2015 regional elections he was a last-ditch substitution for Artur Mas who, as usual, failed to achieve an overall majority. The most-voted CiU and ERC coalition needed CUP to form a government but the anti-system party rejected Mas, whom they linked to ‘privatisations, cutbacks

tional Tribunal, Rato should soon be banged up for using a ‘black’ credit card. He and 63 others blew €11.8 million on what couldn’t be described as life’s necessities when Spain was in the midst of a crisis. As the Tribunal judges said in their summing up, they spent ‘without control of any kind and with no fiscal reflection.’ But since when did that ever prevent Rato from doing what he financially fancied? There’s more to come, as he also faces money-laundering charges which inexplicably have never yet reached court. Or is the reason why an even bigger story?

Railway call MEMBERS of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) have lent their support to a campaign to reopen a railway that once ran from Granada Province to Murcia through Almanzora. The PP’s Baza branch, in Granada Province, tabled a motion with the local council calling on Madrid to allocate funds to rebuilding the Guadix Baza Almanzora Lorca line. The PP members said they wanted Spain’s government to allocate funds to the project in next year’s budget. Maria Jose Martin, of the Baza PP, said the government should prioritise investing in the line. “The closure of the line was a disastrous decision for the provinces of Granada and Almeria. It saw economic development stunted in Macael and other towns along the line,” Martin said.

LINE PUSH: The track once ran through the Almanzora Valley. The previous PP government had included plans for a new line along the same route in its Infrastructure, Transport and Housing Plan for 2012-24, Martin added. “It would be advisable to prioritise the reopening of the Guadix-Baza-Lorca line,
with the caveats and modifications in the layout recommended by previous technical studies,” Martin said. The call comes as activists with the Association of Friends of the Railroad District of Baza visited Spain’s Development Minis-
ter Pedro Duque to lobby for the line to be reopened. They also asked for funds for a feasibility study into the line to rise from the current €500,000 to €1.6 million. “The line is much needed infrastructure for the region which has been with-
out a railway for 33 years,” the group said. The railway line once spanned 161 kilometres, served several towns in Almeria including Cantoria, Macael, Seron and Tijola and carried freight and passengers. Services ceased on the line in 1985, with the 34th anniversary of its closure coming up this January. It once carried marble from Macael to other parts of Almeria Province as well as to Granada Province and the Murcia region. The Association of Friends published a study last August which claimed 11 of the towns had a seen ‘significant’ decline in their populations since its closure. Land in those areas had also fallen into disuse and was no longer tillable having undergone a process known as ‘desertification,’ the study added.

Emergency works WORKERS with the Diputacion de Almeria have carried out emergency works to the AL8106 road in Cuevas del Almanzora which was damaged by torrential rain earlier this year. Repairs were required to the road after part of it was swept away in the downpour and its embankment slope began sinking. The Diputacion de Almeria has spent some €20,000 financing the works, the provincial authority said in a statement. Oscar Liria, the Diputacion’s development spokesperson, said: “These works will boost the safety of this road which sees hundreds of vehicles pass on it every day.” The works come as the Diputacion announced several repair projects in towns across the Almanzora area following the storms.
VIOLENCE SESSIONS: A gender violence case in Albox triggered vigils earlier this year.
Gender violence meetings A COMMUNITY centre in the Albox area has been chosen along with 13 others across Almeria Province to host training sessions to improve responses to gender violence cases. Saliente’s Community Social Services Centre is one of 13 across Almeria Province which will host the courses which are set to run until next February. The Diputacion de Almeria launched the sessions with family teams in social ser-
vices in a bid to help them provide better care to the victims of gender violence. Angel Escobar, the Diputacion’s social welfare spokesperson, said the authority’s network of resources was being marshalled to help combat gender violence. “These sessions are designed to improve care for women victims of gender violence and to avoid or minimise the side effects that a person goes through in such cases,” Escobar said.
“We must use all the tools at our disposal to fight against this scourge and adopt effective measures to protect women and child victims. “Violence against women is the cruellest manifestation of men’s unequal power relations with women,” the official added. Social workers are set to be taught skills designed to help them identify cases where women are at risk of gender violence or are in relationships with conflict and abuse. Psychologists and teachers are also due to be at the talks. The sessions come as part of the State Pact against Gender Violence, a nationwide imitative designed to combat the abuse of women. The Saliente Centre was chosen as a venue along with ones in Abrucena, Alhama, Berja, Benahaduz, Cantoria, Huercal-Overa, La Mojonera, Olula del Rio, Tabernas, Turre, Velez-Rubio and Vera. The sessions follow the death of Maria Carmen in Albox earlier this year in an alleged case of gender violence. Her partner was later arrested in connection with the investigation into the killing. Her death sparked vigils and demonstrations across Almeria Province, Andalucia and elsewhere in Spain.

MOTORING FACT ON October 3, the European Parliament voted for draft cuts in carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions from new cars of 20 per cent by 2025, and 40 per cent by 2030. Honda Civic Type R: A car with charisma THE Honda Civic Type R has a lot of front, and holds the front wheel-drive car record around the Nurburgring. It is certainly not a shrinking violet, with skirts, vanes, ducts, vortex generators, splitters, diffusers, a huge deck spoiler and a bonnet scoop. Not to mention three exhaust pipes. According to Honda this ‘aggressive silhouette makes a confident statement about the Civic Type R’s dynamic character.’ This new model is longer, lower and wider, and the smooth underbody makes it hug the ground with more downforce. Unlike some rivals the high level rear spoiler doesn’t block the view out the back window and although faked, the carbon fibre effect gives it a smart updated look. The large rear wheel extensions are needed to accommodate the wider track and the trapezoidal bonnet scoop sits in an aluminium bonnet that is 5.3kg lighter than the steel bonnet on a standard five-door model. Like a Golf GTI, red is the highlight colour
Honda has opted for in the lines running around the car, and a two-litre petrol engine puts out a hefty 320bhp. Even with that power going through just the front wheels, the Civic Type R zooms to 60mph from zero in 5.8 seconds. Although it is only available with a six-speed annual box, the machined ball alloy gear knob is a joy to use. There is a new single-mass flywheel to reduce clutch inertia by 25 per cent, and a 7 per cent lower final ratio. Adding a final touch of theatrics is the throttle ‘blipping’ effect from the rev matching function. Standard models get special readouts, including an LED gearshift indicator light, boost pressure gauge, GMeter and lap time recorder. Safety measures include a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning. Overall, it is not a car that your parents are going to like, but that is surely part of its appeal.
A FORD Thunderbird owned by Marilyn Monroe is for sale at auction in Los Angeles next month, when it is estimated that it will sell for €260,000 to €430,000. She bought the car in 1955, just before marrying playwright Arthur Miller, and had it until shortly before her death in 1962. A report published at the time suggests that the couple drove this vehicle to their civil wedding ceremony on June 28, 1956, and probably also to their private wedding two days later. The Thunderbird has a 312 cubic-inch (just over 5,000cc) V8 engine producing 225 horsepower, which gave a top speed of 113mph. With a two-door roadster body, it was pitched as Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Corvette produced by its rival General Motors. Its bodywork is finished in Raven Black, with a black and white interior. As standard, it has Ford-OMatic automatic transmission, power steering and brakes along with electric windows and seats. Although Marilyn Monroe bought it in late 1955, the Thunderbird is a 1956 model and, as such, came from the factory with both its canvas convertible top and a detachable hard top with distinctive ‘porthole’ windows on each side.

HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR: The stylish Thunderbird suited its famous owner. Having owned it for six years the actress gave it to John Strasberg, son of director and revered acting coach Lee Strasberg, for his 18th birthday. The Thunderbird is being sold at Julien’s Auctions and its president Darren Julien said: “Once in a while something comes along that has a powerful magic about it. “This wonderful black Ford Thunderbird is not only part of automotive history but comes with an aura of glamour, romance and tragedy of a true Hollywood legend.” The vintage car has received a frame-off restoration to its exact original appearance by a premier Californian firm specialising in classic 1955, 1956 and 1957 Ford Thunderbirds. The current owner said: “Finding this car, a classic two-seater model, after 56 years of its unknown whereabouts, was a singular event.
“No other car has been located and documented as owned by the incomparable Marilyn Monroe.”

THE tiny Fiat 500 has been produced for the past 60 years and was one of the first true city cars, a pioneering model which has sold more than six million worldwide. Even in its early days there was a soft-top version available and the current 500 also comes with a sliding fabric roof to provide open top motoring, and it is also marketed as the 500C. Prices start at €16,404 (£14,460) though versions with more equipment of course cost more. My test model was a 1.2 litre 69 hp petrol version in Lounge trim, with standard kit including air-conditioning, cruise control, rear parking sensors, touchscreen infotainment, alloy wheels and chrome detailing. This model costs €18,015 (£15,890). Top speed is160 kph, (99 mph) the 0-100 kph time is 12.9 seconds, and fuel economy 21.2 kpl (60 mpg).

Pepperell is British Master ENGLAND’S Eddie Pepperell won his second European Tour title with a two-shot victory at the British Masters. The 27-year-old took a three-shot lead into the final day at Walton Heath, and closed out the win by carding a level-par 72 to finish on nine under. Victory means Pepperell, who also won the Qatar Masters in February, will break into the world’s top 35 for the first time. “I am over the moon,” he said. “I did not sleep well the last two nights. It was hard to keep my mind on the golf because I was leading all week.” Pepperell finished two shots ahead of playing partner Alexander Bjork of Sweden, who carded a one-under-par 71. Testing is Bolt from the blue USAIN BOLT has questioned why he has received a notice for a drugs test from Australia’s anti-doping authority (ASADA), saying he is not yet a professional footballer. The eight-time Olympic sprint champion has been on trial with Central Coast Mariners and scored twice on his first start in a friendly on Friday. Bolt says he has been told he is being tested as he is an ‘elite athlete.’
In an Instagram post on Monday, in which he showed the drugs test notice, Bold wrote: ‘How am I going to get a drug test today? I’m not even a professional footballer yet. Seriously.’ The notice from ASADA requesting blood and urine appears to have been issued by Football Federation Australia. It is understood that even as a trialist, Bolt is officially registered with
the club, and is therefore subject to drug testing. Bolt’s trial period with the ALeague club came to an end at the weekend and the Mariners now have to decide whether to offer the sprint legend a permanent deal, a further trial period, or release him. ASADA defines an athlete as a person who ‘competes in sport and who is subject to the National Anti-Doping Scheme.’
