TWO men have been arrested after breaking into a home and threatening its owners with a knife. T h e a l l e g e d b u rg l a r s have been placed in prison pending trial after reportedly forcing entry to an apartment in La Cala del Moral while wearing balaclavas before holding a knife to one person’s throat and stabbing another person. The suspects, identified only as MLC, aged 22, and DTR, aged 19, are said to have tried to break into the property’s front door early in the morning. Hearing a disturbance, a woman inside the home reportedly tried to block their entry but was forced to the ground before the men held a knife to her neck. Neighbours saw the commotion and called police as well as the property’s other owner as he travelled to work. The owner made his way back home, reportedly disturbing the intruders and entering into a struggle with them. The man is then reported

LOCAL POLICE: Seized two knives. to have been stabbed with a large knife and sustained injuries to both hands. Moments later, police arrived, preventing further injury and arresting the suspects. It’s a fruitless task A FARMING association is asking police to crack down on the sale of stolen fruit. The Agrarian Organisation of Young Farmers (ASAJA) is pressuring councils and the Local Police to increase checks in shops and markets on the origin of fruit and vegetables. A spokesperson for ASAJA claimed it was easy to tell which fruits - particularly avocados - had been stolen as they were often immature. He explained the crops, “are clearly not edible because they have two months of growth left and must be collected in December at the earli-
est for commercial maturity.” ASAJA claim these products are then sold at lower-than-normal prices, causing unfair competition which is harming other growers. The body said police should do more to control the “illegal sale,” of fruit and vegetables on the side of roads and in markets, adding, “if the fight against theft is effective we will also prevent farmers from picking a fruit before it is ready for fear of being robbed.” The organisation is asking councils to fine sellers who do not find out the crop’s origin.

Hero police save man MEMBERS of the Local and National Police have saved the life of a suicidal man in Caleta de Velez. Several civilians also helped in the rescue after a 30-year-old man swam half a mile out to sea and reportedly tried to drown himself. The man, named as Alejandro MG, is said to have been suffering from a ‘psychotic break,’ and had been told by members of his family at a nearby bar in Caleta de Velez that he would have to be admitted to a mental health hospital in Malaga. Alejandro instead fled and ran into the sea. Officers from the National Police found his brother and sister standing on the beach and initially called for help from the Maritime Services.
After learning it would take four hours for a rescue boat to arrive, officers instead ran to the marina in Caleta de Velez in search of a motor boat, finding help from two residents, Antonio Jose Encinas and Pablo Moyano. Meanwhile, a member of the Local Police flagged down the owner of another boat already out to sea, identifying himself as a police officer and asking for help. A fourth man, a young kayaker from Madrid, also paddled out to Alejandro, staying with him and helping the rescue boats locate him. Officers finally persuaded the man to come aboard a boat before he was transferred to hospital with, ‘symptoms of fatigue, totally exhausted and without strength.’

Stolen babies doctor walks free amidst appeal plans By Joe Gerrard PROSECUTORS have said they will appeal against a Madrid court’s ruling which found a doctor guilty over Spain’s historic stolen babies scandal, but spared him jail. Madrid’s provincial court convicted Eduardo Vela on all charges after he stood trial over claims he stole a baby and gave it to supporters of former dictator Francisco Franco in 1969. The 85-year-old was allowed to walk free after the trial because the legal limit for convicting him had expired. Madrid Public Prosecutors now plan to lodge an appeal with Spain’s Supreme Court in an effort to secure a sentence. Vela is the first person to stand trial over the stealing of an estimated 300,000 babies from their mothers to sell to families who supported Franco during his rule.

FREED: Vela was not jailed for stealing Madrigal (inset). The former gynaecologist was accused of taking Ines Madrigal from her real mother in 1969 and handing her to a 46year-old woman who raised her as her own child. Madrid’s provincial court convicted Vela on charges of unlawful detention, falsifying official documents and certifying a
non-existent birth at the trial last week. Judges said the 85-yearold’s guilt had been proved ‘indisputably’ and that it was ‘crystal clear’ Vela had forged documents to allow for the taking of Madrigal. The judgement went onto state that the defendant would not go to prison because the
‘statute of limitation,’ or time limit to press charges, had passed. Vela told the court he did not remember details of how his San Ramon clinic in Madrid had been run. Madrigal, from Murcia, said she now thought she would never know the identity of her real parents and that Vela would take
it with him to the grave. “I feel good because the judges acknowledged the theft, but of course I don’t agree with the statute of limitations point,” she said. Madrigal’s lawyer Guillermo Peña argued the statute did not apply in the case because she did not find out about the theft until 2010.

STUNNING: Albarracin was voted the most beautiful town in Spain. THIS village in the Aragon region has recently topped a list of the 30 most beautiful towns in Spain. Albarracin, in Teruel Province, saw off competition from almost 250 settlements from across the country in El Viajero’s online poll which ran from September 28 to October 2. T h e v o te w a s on villa ge s a nd towns with a population of 10,000 or under. Albarracin, with a population of
around 1,075, was named a National Monument in 1961 due to its historical and cultural heritage. The tow n is be lie ve d to ha ve been founded by the Muslim Moors sometime in the 10th century. The name Albarracin is thought to come from the Banu Razin dynasty who chose the town as the capital of its fiefdom from the early 11th century. The town passed into Christian hands after it was conquered by Pe-
Stadium on fire ARSONISTS reportedly started a fire in the Fernando Ruiz Hierro stadium. Police say they are searching for suspects after a fire broke out in the gym at the sports stadium in VelezMalaga. Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene of the fire, which took place at the building just 300 metres from the town’s fire station. Workers extinguished the flames which caused damage to sports mats and other
sports gear. No one was injured in the blaze. Residents reported seeing a column of smoke coming from the fire for several kilometres around after the fire broke out last Thursday. Police believe arsonists deliberately started the flames before leaving the building. The Local and National Police have now taken over the investigation and have not yet found any suspects.

Water cal-amity RESIDENTS are complaining calcium in their mains water is ruining household appliances. Politicians in Velez-Malaga are criticising the council and encouraging locals to claim for damaged appliances on their household insurance after it was claimed hard water was to blame. Members of the Izquierda Unida (IU) party said water from the Molino de las Monjas well contains higher-than-normal levels of calcium and is affecting house-

holds in the Caleta de Velez area. IU told the council it will be seeking a solution from the Ombudsman, claiming there had been, ‘innumerable and considerable damages caused by the poor quality of the water supplied.’ The council rejects these claims, however, saying the water, ‘meets quality requirements.’ A spokesman for the council’s Department for the Environment added, “we do not understand the smear campaign IU has been carrying out.”

Space Race link TWO Spanish technicians have spoken about their time working for NASA on the Apollo 11 Moon landing ahead of the release of a film based on the mission. Carlos Gonzalez and Jose Manuel Grandela both worked at the Fresnedillas de la Oliva tracking station in the Madrid region in the 1960’s. Both were there during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 and Gonzalez controlled its communications. Gonzalez and Grandela both recently attended an event at the Astrobiology Centre in the Madrid region held to mark the premiere of The First Man. The film, starring Ryan Gosling as first man on the Moon Neil Armstrong, dramatises the Apollo 11 mission and is set to be released next year for its 50th anniversary. Gonzalez said he and Grandela had a privileged position because they could listen to conversations between the Apollo 11 crew and mission control in Houston before anyone else. Both were the first people to hear Armstrong confirm he and Buzz Aldrin had touched down on the Moon with the words: ‘The eagle has landed.’ Gonzalez said Armstrong wanted to step onto
the Moon no matter what happened and added he remembered an exchange between the astronaut and Houston when told he had to wait. “I’ve been preparing for this for years, I’ve travelled 400,000 kilometres, I’ve gone down to the Moon with certain difficulties and now you tell me I have to sleep?” Gonzalez remembered Armstrong saying. “Houston had proposed to abort the mission but Armstrong took semiautomatic control and with Buzz Aldrin giving him altitude and speed data he landed with about 30 seconds’ worth of fuel to spare,” Gonzalez said. Gonzalez added he also remembered Armstrong asking how he had managed to stumble on his way out of the lunar module despite practising 300 times on Earth. Grandela, who was 23 at the time, said the mission was an important step in the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. “The mission unleashed an avalanche of innovations in engineering, informatics, materials and fuels from which all of humanity is benefiting today,” he said.

Sexual assault on coast A MAN has been arrested after allegedly sexually assa u l t i n g a y o u n g woman in Torre del Mar. The 41-year-old Moroccan man was arrested after reportedly touching a young woman’s breasts without her consent outside a nightclub on the coast in the early hours of the morning. A 21-year-old woman claims the man fondled her breasts and also slapped her in the face as she st o o d o u t si d e th e doors of the club. The alleged victim reported the incident to the police before a member of a Local Police patrol was sent to look for the man. An officer found a man fitting the perpetrator’s description nearby. According to one publication, as the officer approached the suspect he was i n t h e m i d d l e o f a fight with another man who is said to have fled when police approached. The girl was then asked to identify the man as her attacker which she report e d l y d i d v ery quickly. Police then arrested the alleged perpetrator. Solid as a Rock WHILST the UK continues to be in the midst of internal and external dispute over the increasingly imminent Brexit, spare a thought for the politicians in Gibraltar. At the end of the day, this tiny enclave at the tip of Spain has a voting population which is half the size of Wimbledon and from a pot of around 30,000 people has to find politicians who are capable of becoming involved in international negotiations. Happily, it would appear that Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, a barrister and QC is capable of entering this heady atmosphere and with the support of certain of his other ministers - including Deputy Chief Minister Garcia - has walked a difficult tightrope. Although the Spanish government is in theory committed to Spanish rule over the Rock, the change, firstly of Foreign Minister Margallo (who was a ‘sword rattling’ member of those who claim Gibraltar) and then the return to power of the PSOE Spanish Socialist Party has seen a less aggressive stance against Gibraltar in recent months. It is clear that in financial terms, Gibraltar has an exceptionally strong economy and is said to be the second largest employer of Spanish workers in the Campo de Gibraltar, beaten only by the Government of Andalucia. Despite all of the hard work that the Gibraltarians may put into the negotiations, at the end of the day, it’s the UK parliament and the remaining 27 member states of the EU who will actually decide the future of this British Overseas Territory. For what it’s worth however, those born in Gibraltar can currently move to the UK, unlike the citizens of that other territory, Hong Kong which was returned to China.

Drink driver injures two A DRIVER has reportedly hurt two people after crashing into their moped on the MA-3113. The as yet unnamed driver is said to have run into a man and a woman as they travelled on the road between Velez-Malaga and Benamargosa just after midnight. The perpetrator, who is reported to have tested positive for alcohol, is said to have been involved in a side-on collision with the pair, leaving both moped passengers injured. Members of the Guardia Civil, fire brigade and health workers attended the accident, transferring the pair to the Axarquia Regional Hospital in Velez-Malaga. Jose Gallego, mayor of Benamargosa, explained the injured couple, both aged 34, were hurt in the accident. He added the man had sustained several injuries and fractures and remained in observation at the hospital in Axarquia. Mayor Gallego added that the woman was in a more serious condition and had later been transferred to the intensive care unit at Malaga’s Carlos Haya Hospital.

PARENTS are petitioning over alleged safety failures at their children’s schools. Mother and fathers of students at new schools in Torre de Benagalbon and Teatinos, Malaga, have started to collect signatures on an online petition at www.Change.org. They claim the prefabricated classrooms in Torre de Benagalbon are unsuitable for their purpose and are only 10 metres away from building works to create a permanent school. Last month it was revealed parents of children at the school in Rincon de la Victoria were pulling them out of school over concerns their classrooms are unsafe. Only half of students at the Torre de Benagalbon Institute turned up to class for five days after parents complained of the, ‘lack of safety and hygiene measures, as well as discomfort from noise, heat and dust.’ The Junta de Andalucia has insisted the prefabricated classrooms are ‘perfectly safe,’ and comply with the, ‘norms of security, habitability, fire laws and accessibility.’ A spokesperson at the Ministry of Education said, “before any alarm is caused, the Delegation of Education wants to state that the facilities which temporarily house the new Benagalbon Tower Institute meet all conditions for security and habitability and are suitable for educational use.” He added this, “has been certified by two specialised companies and technicians of the Andalucian Public Education Agency.”

New species SCIENTISTS have discovered a n ew ty p e o f in s e c t in the N e rja Caves. Researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid found the ‘porcellio narixae,’ a small, dark violet brown insect in the caves. Julio Cifuentes, who discovered the new type, has now published his findings in the latest edition of the Spanish Society of Etymology’s paper. Mr Cifuentes said the insect came from the genus porcellionidae, of which woodlice are
members, which is known to dwell in caves. He added he named his discovery narixae from the Arabic word Narixa from which Nerja gets its name. The find came as part of work carried out inside the caves since 2000 under the supervision of Alberto Tinaut. The project saw insect ‘traps’ used to gain a sample of the porcellio narixae. Mr Cifuentes explained the original insect found has now been preserved in alcohol and is stored at the university in Madrid.

POLITICIANS have approved works to build pedestrian bridges over two rivers in Nerja. The €252,271 project has been awarded to Asturian company Media Madera Ingenieros Consultores SL, which will install wooden walkways over the mouths of the rivers Chillar and Seco. The plans will mean pedestrians no longer have to make long detours around the town when the river beds fill up with rain water. The project, which was initially proposed in 2015 by the previous Partido Popular (PP) run council, will use bridges identical to those already in place in neighbouring Torrox. The bridge over the Rio Chillar will cost €190,575.99 and will measure around 16.5 metres long and three metres wide, while the one over Rio Seco will cost €61,695.84 and measure 30 metres long and three metres wide.

New health centre A HIGH-RANKING politician has visited Competa to ask for a new health centre. Patricia Navarro, the general secretary of the Partido Popular (PP) in Malaga, travelled to the mountain village to discuss the need for a new building. Ms Navarro met with the town’s mayor, Obdullio Perez - also of the PP party - to
speak about the ‘imminent need to build a new health centre that fits the needs of the residents more than the deficient current one.’ Ms Navarro also spoke about the agreement reached several months ago with the Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry for Health for a 550 square metre premises to be given for the new health centre.

The driver: was arrested in El Rincón de la Victoria POLICE in Rincon de la Victoria have detained a man for crimes against road safety. Officers from the Local Police arrested the French man, named only as JAR, after he was allegedly found driving at high speed along the
town’s Avenida del Mediterraneo, swerving to avoid cars and driving on the wrong side of the road. Police pulled the 52-yearold driver over, and, suspecting him of having drunk alcohol, breathalysed him. The man reportedly tested positive for drink-driving, offering a breath sample of 0.56 mg/l. Police also searched the man’s vehicle and say they found marihuana and a piece of hashish. Officers arrested the man
for various crimes against road safety and placed him in custody ahead of an appearance in Malaga’s Court Number 5. The mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, praised, “the rapid action of the officers who proceeded to arrest this individual.” He added, “citizen security is a priority for this government,” and said he was pleased with the, “good results of the introduction of a new work schedule among the Local Police.”
Fatal crash A 54-YEAR-OLD woman has been killed after her car collided with a lorry. The accident took place at kilometre 37 on the A-356, near the recycling point in La Viñuela. Due to the force of the impact, the victim was declared dead at the scene. Local Police, firemen, members of the Guardia Civil and health workers all attended the scene. The road’s three lanes were all closed as workers helped those involved leading to long queues of traffic building up in both directions.

Tourism official: no-deal Brexit a ‘disaster’ By Joe Gerrard A SENIOR Spanish tourist official has said it would be a disaster for Spain if Britain left the European Union (EU) without a deal next year. Javier Pinanes, the head of Spain’s London tourism office, said there would be “really big” problems if a no-deal Brexit went ahead including for those travelling between the two countries. British people would probably opt not to travel to Spain or other countries in the EU if a no-deal meant the introduction of visas, flight changes and health insurance problems. “For Spain it’s decisive. Britain is our main market. A nodeal Brexit would be a disaster,” he said. He added while speaking to members of the British travel industry association ABTA in Sevilla that hotels particularly on Spain’s coast and its islands were heavily linked to their customers. “I’m convinced there will be an agreement because it is in the

Several EU arrangements such as European Health Insurance and visa-free travel could be disputed or stop all together if Britain leaves the bloc without a deal. The British government stated last month some flights may also be disrupted because airlines would have to get individual permits to fly between Britain and EU states. Mark Tanzer said politicians had “argued and dithered” over the withdrawal negotiations. “The future is unlikely to be a paradise but there’s no reason to believe it will be hell either,” Manley said. The warning comes as the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier said negotiators were working “day and night” to secure a Brexit deal. His comments come as an agreement over the status of Northern Ireland and its border with the Republic continues to stall efforts to reach a final agreement. Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29 2019.

Rape law reforms POLITICAL leaders have agreed to change the law to demand expressed consent in sexual relations as part of the fight against violence of this kind against women. The pact between the government and political group Podemos will lead to a reform of the Criminal Code with the aim of ensuring that ‘if a woman does not say yes explicitly’ then it is not consensual sex. A formal document report-
edly states that ‘the lack of expressed consent of the victim will become a key issue in sexual crimes.’ The debate was triggered by the ongoing La Manada case in Pamplona, involving an 18-year-old female who accused five men of rape. When the men were found guilty of sexual assault, rather than rape, protests were provoked across Spain, with groups and activists calling for reforms to the law.

Flying into trouble COMPETITION regulators have launched a probe into a transatlantic pricing deal between British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines and Finnair. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating a series of commitments made by the quartet to the EU, which allow them to co-operate on pricing, capacity and schedules. The Atlantic Joint Business Agreement (AJBA) was struck in 2010 to address competition concerns raised by Brussels.

with American Airlines and Finnair has been bringing significant benefits to millions of travellers.” Shares in IAG fell 2.3 per cent after the news to 577 pence, their lowest for a year. The CMA said that it decided to study the partnership as commitments made by the airlines under a European Union competition probe from 2010 will expire in 2020. By that time, the UK will no longer be part of the EU and its competition authorities are more likely to review international agreements.

THE Socialist government of Pedro Sanchez has reached an agreement with Podemos about the 2019 budget that includes the minimum wage rising to €900 per month, and increasing minimum pensions by 3 per cent. The two parties have been in talks since August and are preparing to send their plans to the European Commission. Currently the minimum wage stands at €735 per month, so a rise to €900 would represent an increase of 22.3 per cent.
Boosting minimum and noncontributory pensions by 3 per cent will cost the government €384 million, while the remaining pensions will go up by 1.6 per cent. The agreement also contains housing measures, including proposals to limit rental prices in areas that have seen a sharp escalation. There are also plans to help the long-term unemployed aged over 52 get back training and jobs, with a budget allocation of €323 million.

In its first phase, the train will travel at a maximum speed of 200kph, four days a week
(Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday), stopping at Jeddah and Kaec. A travel time of two hours is expected for direct journeys between Mecca and Medina, and two hours, 20 minutes for trips with stops, according to the Public Transport Authority of Arabia. From September 2019 the AVE will operate at full capacity, and will reach speeds of 300kph.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT HAVE to say I was absolutely delighted when an Irish bakery won their Supreme court case this week. The Belfast bakery ‘Ashers’ had objected to the message that gay activist Gareth Lee had requested for a decorated cake. The message, ‘Support Gay Marriage,’ was considered by the company to be inconsistent with their religious doctrine. They, quite rightly in my opinion, objected to a law that decreed they do something they didn’t believe in. This week the Supreme Court agreed and ruled that the refusal by the bakery to carry out their wishes was not discriminatory and subsequently dismissed the case. Now before I get deluged with hate mail and messages accusing me of homophobia and Lord knows what else, I am NOT homophobic. I have absolutely nothing against people’s sexual preferences, or indeed anything they have, do not have, or would like to have - either between their legs or their ears. What I am against is the increasing difficulty the majorities have in standing up for what they believe in. This Christian, heterosexual run establishment, did not agree with the sentiment of the message required by the person who ordered the cake. To my mind, (on one of their own products) they had every right to refuse to advertise something
that went against their opinions. You can rest assured, that had the boot been on the other foot and a gay activist had owned the bakery, a request to put ‘don’t support gay marriage’ on a product, would have been refused point blank and nothing more would have been heard of

it. But these activists were a minority, weren’t they? Once again, the minority were pandered to by the state. Although the Christian owners eventually won their case, it’s been through a number of courts, taken four years and cost somewhere around a quarter of a million pounds of taxpayers’ money, plus another £200,000 provided by a Christian trust. To me, the attitude of the authorities toward majorities has become unacceptable and utterly undemocratic. Minorities are being allowed to run slipshod and virtually unchecked through
our traditions, our culture, our laws and plain old common sense. They have come to realise perfectly well, that all they need to do is scream ‘discrimination’ or ‘offended’ and the authorities will fall over backward to cater to their every whim - however unacceptable or utterly biased against the majority they may be. The lunatics are indeed taking over the asylum and unless those at the top get their act together and start using some common sense, I see complete disaster looming on an ever-increasing scale. Discrimination; a stifling of free speech, and unfair bias, are completely unacceptable in this day and age. When they are constantly used against the majority, purely because they happen to be a majority, it can only ultimately lead to a complete disintegration of our society as we know it. Get a grip. Minority rule belongs in the far reaches of Korea or Corbyn’s beloved leftwing states. We live in a democracy. TECH FOR THE TIMID CALL me old-fashioned, but I’ve never seen the attraction of watching the latest blockbuster on a six-inch smartphone screen. Hey, even just seeing the screen at this stage of my life is tough enough, never mind actually identifying Bruce Willis on it as he saves the world (again). With ‘content’ hurled at our multitude of devices these days, the trick is getting it onto something which won’t be an optician’s nightmare to watch. Enter the current buzzword: streaming. There are two basic flavours: either from the internet to your device, or from your device to another device. Let’s tackle the second of these. How do you get your ‘content’ from, say, your computer, onto your TV screen? Many new TVs can take USB drives or SD cards directly. If not, the good news is that it’s a doddle with just a cable - as long as your computer is modern enough to have an HDMI socket.

A cheaper alternative to a computer is to buy a dedicated media player or streamer. The best-known come from Roku, Google, Apple or Amazon, or a Kodi box. Their main party

trick is streaming online content through your Wi-Fi, for a fee, from the likes of Netflix or Hulu. Most will also play content you already own. My own favourite gadget for

Available online for as little as €40, there are dozens of such players to choose from. Often barely the size of a cigarette packet (but happily without the health warning), most will handle virtually any current format you throw at them, either from a USB drive or SD card. ‘HOTELS and restaurants are trying to cheat their way to the top of TripAdvisor amid claims that as many as a third of the reviews are fake,’ according to a recent undercover investigation. Independent analysis of tens of thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor reportedly demonstrates that supposedly top-rated B&Bs at tourist hotspots, for instance, have almost twice as many ‘fake’ reviews as lower-ranked accommodation. Two thirds of reviews posted about top B&Bs in some hotspots are thought to be fishy. Add to this a recent landmark legal ruling in Italy that saw one fraudulent online reviewer sentenced to jail after the court ruled that writing fake, paid-for reviews under a false identity was ‘criminal conduct’ in the first convicted case of ‘review fraud’. TripAdvisor is a site that encapsulates the internet conundrum. Its benefits to the paying public are obvious but its misuse can threaten or even wipe out good, honest, small businesses. My take is that TripAdvisor is a useful tool. But obviously it’s only as good as the

FAKE REVIEWS?: There are growing concerns about the authenticity of some reviews. reviewers. As a general principle I tend to ignore any review by those who have only posted one review. There’s a surprising number of these, and they’re invariably completely glowing or completely doom and gloom - and probably either fake or by someone who doesn’t get out enough. (Conversely, if the reviewer has 10+ reviews across a range of star ratings, I’m inclined to listen to what they say.) I’ve come across daft mistakes such as
confusion over similar-sounding hotel names or same name, different locations. Sometimes a fake review stands out because the standard of English is so poor that the author obviously isn’t Janet or John from Bognor! But it would help if TripAdvisor made greater efforts to weed out fakes and ensure that the reviewer is genuinely ‘genuine’. So we have fake news and fake reviews - what’s next, fake columnists? Can they control the feral cats? I have an apartment in Port Pollensa in Mallorca. Our community has two blocks of three floors each. I live on the middle floor. Below me is a woman who is a tenant, not an owner. Over the past few years she has been feeding feral cats. At first it was about five. Then with new kittens it was 12. The issue was brought up at the AGM and she said she would deal with it. But they increased! At the last AGM she said she would neuter them. More kittens then appeared. It smells terrible in hot weather and the land around us is filled with cat urine and faeces. Our Administrator says we must go to the police. Can anything be done under law of horizontal property? Dial S for stupidity Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man OK lots of things this week - I have had my iPhone for a few years - it’s a 6S Plus. To be honest it’s fine but I didn’t bother with the iPhone 7, 8 or 9. Was there a 9? But the new ‘X’ - pronounced ‘ten’ got some good reviews. Well, the X S max to be precise. As an aside it got me thinking - were MI 5 and MI 6 upgrades by the UK government from MI 1 and MI 2? Sorry, back to the phone. I decided to go and check it out. I went to the local Vodafone store. Now, I have been with them for years and years - probably over 14 in fact - when it was Airtel so overall I am pretty satisfied with them. I spoke to the sales assistant in the store and asked if he had one in stock which he did. He explained that it was €1,200 for the top model but it could be paid for in instalments if I sign a new contract for two years. I don’t have a contract at the moment but I said, ‘OK, that’s doable - can I see one please?’ He replied, ‘No, I can show you one in a box but you can’t take it out as I can’t take the plastic cover off the box.’ ‘Don’t you have a display model?’ ‘No.’ ‘So I am meant to buy a phone and sign a two-year contract without being able
to handle the actual product I’m buying?’ It’s pretty unbelievable because once I sign I’m committed. Yes, I could go to the Apple store and no doubt see one live but how stupid not to have one in every store. I didn’t buy one. Something interesting I have noticed is that so many of the top companies now don’t actually make anything. Facebook, Amazon, Uber etc have taken over from so many of the manufacturing companies. In fact 10 or 15 years ago most didn’t even exist. The majority are all online controlled. Bricks and mortar companies are getting smashed to pieces by these tech created companies and, on top of that, is the danger involved. I mean, this week it was announced that 50 million Facebook accounts had been compromised. Fifty million!!! Will they get sued or fined? I read about the hacking but have seen nothing following it up. Facebook was started by a university geek with the sole purpose of picking up girls and now it is one of the most powerful companies in the world. That cannot be right. How about this - instead of testing products on animals, how about testing them on people that don’t say thank you after you hold the door open for them? Or after you let them out in traffic? Nick Horne The Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England AN auction in Hong Kong during April saw competitive bidding drive the valuation of a Famille-Rose porcelain bowl to €24.7 million. It’s happened again. At a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on October 3, 2018 the Yamanaka Reticulated Vase recently discovered in a Private Japanese Collection sold for €19,749,200 (US$19,009,102 or £14,637,024) almost three times its pre-sale estimate of €5.6 - 7.7 million or US$6.4-8.9 million. Bidding opened at HK 40 million (€4.4 million) and rose steadily as five bidders competed for the vase. The Yamanaka is a pair to the famed Bainbridge Vase which hit global headlines when it sold in the UK in 2010. This example had remained dormant and unknown to the wider world, having been in Japan for almost a century since its acquisition in 1924 following a public showing with Yamanaka in New York in 1905. The vase is carved and exquisitely painted with four pairs of fish below Rococo-inspired motifs on a yellow sgraffiato ground. Sgraffiato is a technical term used to describe the application to an unfired ceramic body of two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze, and then ‘scratching’ so as to reveal parts of the underlying layer. Size is not the point! white vase. It ranks amongst the most complex porcelains ever commissioned by the 18th century Emperor of China, Qianlong. This porcelain masterpiece is not only a reflection of the exacting standards on technical proficiency, but of the insatiable demand for stylistic novelty at the court of the Qianlong Emperor as well as an aesthetic representation of the cultural confluence of East and West at its pinnacle in Chinese history. Reticulated yagcai vases with double walls represent one of the last great innovations introduced by Tang Ying, the imperial kilns’ creative supervisor. When peering through the outer shell, the Emperor would have had a real surprise, since nothing on the outside of this vase would have prepared him for what was on the inside. Also at auction that day was an outstanding Falangcai Poppy Bowl, arguably one of the greatest examples of Qianlong falangcai porcelain in private hands. This also achieved the exceptional price of €18,778,500 /
US$21,600,158 or £16,632,138. Unassuming in its beauty, the bowl is exquisitely enamelled on the exterior with an intricate design of poppies issuing from rockwork, with a butterfly depicted fluttering gracefully overhead, a 14character poem, and the interior with finger-citron, apple and cherries. Some of the most valuable and valued objects are diminutive, rare and exquisite.

And whilst I don’t go along with the ‘we’ve all been there, too much to drink …’ spin (maybe I was just brought up right, I haven’t kissed anyone except my other half since we got married). I think the kiss story should just be left alone so we can focus on the dancing. Katie and Gorka left the show on Sunday, which is a shame. Katie has been wonderful and I think she would have got better and better if she had been able to stay. Oh, and she doesn’t kiss the face off her dancing partner in front of tabloid photographers - sorry, cheap shot. Strictly is back on Saturday evening, BBC1. Did you watch the Royal Wedding last week? Well, about four million people watched it live and about the same number watched the highlights show later in the day. Galia charges guests £1,200 per week to live on 450 calories a day, that’s about two G&Ts I think, and she treats the weight-shedders like rubbish. She is one of those people who either

Some of the personal stories are nice to follow, so it’s worth a look if you find yourself with a massive pizza, lots of chocolates and some good friends to shout at the TV with. ITV are trying to counter the obvious appeal of BBC1’s Sunday night offering The Cry, with a drama about a couple who get back together when their 11-year-old son Max identifies as a girl. Butterfly started last Sunday and the keyboard warriors have been furiously typing their thoughts ever since. Callum Booth-Ford is brilliantly cast as Max, treading a minefield of bullying, schoolwork and coming to terms with her identity. Anna Friel and Emmet J Scanlan are Mum and Dad, Vicky and Stephen and Millie Gibson is sister Lily. Anna is marvellous, Emmet plays Dad brilliantly and Millie is fantastic. Of course the topic will alienate some, will no doubt draw comment from Leapy and will leave most of us open mouthed. All participants were free from type 2 diabetes when the studies began, although by the time of the follow-up, more than 15,100 had developed the disease. At the end of the research, scientists found those with higher levels of dairy-fat markers had a 30 per cent lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The study’s lead author, Dr Fumiaki Imamura from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, said, “our results provide the most comprehensive global evidence to date about dairy fat biomarkers and their relationship with lower risk of type 2 diabetes.”
Good gout news DESPITE years of speculation to the contrary, scientists have now discovered gout is not caused by poor diet. The painful and potentially debilitating condition affects around one in 40 people in the UK, causing inflammation of the joints. It was previously thought wine, red meat and beer could be to blame for the disease but researchers have discovered that is not the case. A study by the University of Otago, New Zealand, found genetics were instead to blame for how likely a person was to develop the illness. The researchers analysed 16,760 people living in the United States who had European ancestry. Urate is a salt produced in the body when it breaks down compounds called purines. High urate levels- known as hyperuricaemia- are associated with a higher risk of having gout as uric crystals build up in a person’s joints causing inflammation. It had previously been hyperuricaemia was determined by what foods a person
ate. The scientists instead found genes were in fact responsible for 23.9 per cent of a person’s urate count. The study found while some foods such as beer, wine, spirits, potatoes, meat, eggs, and cheese could raise urate levels, it only did so by 1 per cent. Professor Tony Merriman, lead researcher, said, “our data challenge widely held community perceptions that hyperuricaemia is primarily caused by diet, showing for the first time that genetic variants have a much greater contribution to hyperuricaemia than dietary exposure.”

Even long after fine lines and wrinkles have set in, our bodies can somehow still produce enough oil to create those annoying little black dots, often on our noses and cheeks. And while blackheads caused when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil and dirt - are harmless, they can certainly be irritating. Unfortunately, there is no permanent way to remove blackheads, although thankfully with good skin hygiene and regular extraction their appearance can be lessened. An important first step is making sure skin is cleansed both thoroughly and regularly. Many dermatologists recommend cleaning skin both morning and evening with a mild cleanser. Avoid harsh or foaming formulas as these can strip the skin, leaving it likely to overproduce sebum, creating oily, blackhead-prone skin. The right cleanser for

New research has found fatty cheese, yoghurts and butter could actually lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, despite previous dire warnings about the health risks of these dairy products. A team of scientists at the University of Cambridge has found those who ate dairyrich foods, including cream and full-fat milk, had a 30 per cent lower risk of the lifethreatening disease than those who ate less of these foods. The scientists are now suggesting dairy products shouldn’t be discouraged, and we should be doing more research into their health benefits. The comprehensive study involved results from more than 63,600 adults over the course of 20 years.

At 9.15 at night as I was passing the salt lakes at Santa Pola, a car was parked by the old tower without any headlights on. As I passed he pulled out and sat very close to my bumper, only using his headlights to flash me, which he did constantly. He only used his headlights to flash me, all the rest of the time his car was in darkness, and I was unable to determine the make of car or his registration number. On the single lane part of the road he continuously tried to overtake me on the wrong side of the road, ie on the curb side rather than the overtaking lane. I must admit I have heard of the means used by the local highway robbers and the behaviour of this driver was exactly the same as that recorded previously in the local press. Each time he tried to get in front of me, I admit that I put my foot down to prevent him getting in front of me and cutting me up, or forcing me to stop. I had determined to go to the police at Guardamar, but when we reached the lit section of

What makes this bird a wonder of nature is that it has a rare condition called leucism, which is a lack of melanin in the feathers. THE second Almuñecar Festival of Flamenco Guitar starts this evening (Thursday) and runs until Saturday night at the Casa de la Cultura Sexitana with each concert starting at 8pm. The concept of the event is to allow highly proficient flamenco guitarists to shine on their own without the distraction of singers or dancers so that the audience can enjoy the fine tones of the guitar alone and according to the council, this is the only flamenco guitar festival held in Eastern Andalucia. Manuel de la Luz from Huelva will open the event with music from his album De la Cruz which was released this year. His pedigree is exceptional with regular performances in Spain and he has not only presented a range of his own compositions in several shows, he has worked as musical director of Ballet Flamenco de Andalucia and toured internationally with the flamenco ballet of Eva Yerbabuena.

THE seventh International Meeting of Plastic Artists is taking place until this Sunday at the Casa de la Cultura in Almuñecar. There are 15 different artists from six countries (Argentina, Germany, Hungary, Kuwait, Russia and Spain) taking part and their work will be on display at the Culture Centre on Sunday. The definition of plastic art (artes plásticas) is simply a medium whereby material can be used to create art and includes photography, sculpture, painting, drawing and architecture. GREAT for killing off bacteria, warding off coughs and keeping your heart healthy, garlic is also a great flavour enhancing cooking ingredient. So what could be more satisfying than preparing your favourite dishes using your own home-grown garlic. As well as being cheap and fun, it’s easy to do, even if you’re not particularly green fingered. Garlic, ‘allium sativum’, is a member of the onion family, together with leeks and shallots, but instead of one bulb, it produces around a dozen small cloves. These are surrounded by a flimsy, papery skin, and each one is a seed. The best way to get good garlic bulbs is to grow lots of leaves before bulb development, and the trick is in the timing. Garlic isn’t particular and can be planted in late autumn or early spring, but it is better later in the year, providing the winter is not too severe.

Grow your own garlic
It needs to go through a cold spell if the head is to develop well, so November is ideal. Choose a site that is open and sunny, with a fertile, well-drained light soil, as heavy soil leads to misshapen bulbs and makes harvesting difficult. Garlic doesn’t need a soil high in nutrients so can be planted once a summer crop has been lifted.
When selecting cloves to plant, choose bulbs that are healthy and firm. Pick the larger, outer cloves, and ensure they are smooth, fresh and free of disease. Place them 15 to 18 cm apart, in rows 30 cm apart. The closer together they are planted, the smaller the mature bulbs will be. Make sure they are flat base down, at a depth twice the length of the clove, with
a couple of centimetres of soil above. It’s important to keep the soil moist. Remove any flowers as they appear, keep the area weed free and wait. The tops will turn yellow when the garlic is ready to harvest. Remove gently with a fork, remove excess soil and leave them somewhere dry until the skin becomes papery. Mature bulbs are best stored in a cool, dry place,
but not a refrigerator, as they will begin to sprout. TASTY: The ‘allium sativum’ also has health benefits.

The CCCA October Classic Car Run LWAYS looking for new ways to enjoy the cars and the countryside, October event organisers Richard and Nicky Masters put on a car run starting just west of Ronda last Saturday morning. A hotel was organised for people wishing to stay on the Friday night and many people seized the opportunity to join the organisers in a tapas night out. The Masters had arranged a coach for those wanting to use it to get in to Ronda and many new tapas bars were explored. Luckily, the run itself didn’t start until 11 . 0 0 a m a l l o w i n g plenty of recovery time! By that hour many members had gathered waiting for the ‘Off ’ having enj o y e d c o ff e e o r breakfast first. The run covered some stunning, quiet roads around Zahara and Grazalema areas and skirted the beautiful lakes near there. A stop for coffee was enjoyed by all but, much more appreciated, was the stop for Aperol Spritzers kindly provided by the intrepid organisers. On time, around 2.30pm, crews started to arrive back at the same hotel, the (Posada del Ronda), from where the run had started, in time to enjoy an excellent lunch. On the menu were starters such as Carpaccio of beef, Revuelto, Jamon etc and main courses included Fish and the local s p e c i a l i t y, R a b o d e To r o (Oxtail) and some stunning steaks. Wines were includ-

ed, and generous drinks on the house were provided by the hoteliers afterwards which prompted a number of members to stay a second night and start the fun and games all over again! Excellent… So very CCC of A !

Jaguar car run in October which was well supported and had a very good and thoroughly enjoyable route too. Organised by members, the event started near Alhaurin and finished up at the Golf Club, Alhaurin. On the way the Club bumped into the Spanish Club, Costa del Sol Historics, who were enjoying their annual Tour Costa del Sol. Both clubs used the s a m e Ve n t a f o r a c o ff e e stop and enjoyed looking at
each others’ cars before completing their respective journeys. ASADA defines an athlete as a person who ‘competes in sport and who is subject to the National Anti-Doping Scheme.’

MICK SCHUMACHER, the son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael, won the Formula 3 European title with a race to spare. The 19-year-old finished second in race two of the season finale in Hocken-
heim, Germany, to establish an unassailable lead in the drivers’ standings. In Sunday’s race three, Prema driver Schumacher finished second again for his 14th podium of the season. “I am absolutely delight-
ed,” German Schumacher said. “What this team has achieved over the last year is unbelievable.” Schumacher had failed to score in the opening race in Hockenheim following a
first-lap collision, but held a 49 point advantage going into the final round in Germany. Motopark driver Juri Vips won race two from pole position, and with Dan Ticktum coming home in seventh, Schumacher’s second-place finish was enough to seal championship victory.
