Poverty rise Rate increases by a third By Joe Gerrard THE amount of people in poverty in Almeria Province has risen over an almost 30-year period despite millions of euros spent trying to lower it, an official report said. The Junta de Andalucia’s Disadvantaged Zones report stated that the number of those living in poverty has risen by 33 per cent. Almost a quarter of people have no basic education or could not read and write in some areas. “The areas facing the most negative situations are generally small towns and most of them are concentrated in Almeria and Granada,” the report stated. A total of 11 areas in Almeria Province were named as being among Andalucia’s most disadvantaged. They were in Almeria City, Nijar, El Ejido, Roquetas de Mar and Vicar. The unemployment rate stands above 40 per cent in some parts of Almeria. Some of those areas were classed as in need of help to reduce poverty when the Junta published its first Disadvantaged Zones report in 1989. The El Puche area of Almeria City was named

LEVELS of air pollution in parts of Almeria Province rose beyond safe limits and reached an amount harmful to health last year, according to a government report. The Evaluation of Air Quality in Spain, from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, also found there was no improvement on the rate of pollution in Almeria compared previous years. The report stated levels of pollution in Almeria were also
damaging to the tropospheric ozone, the layer of atmosphere closest to the Earth’s surface. The Ecologists in Action environmental campaigning group said the data was ‘worrisome.’ It claimed in its own analysis of the statistics that industrial areas such as that around the Port of Almeria City were particularly affected. The group’s report found le-
gal limits for pollution were broken on 54 days in the port area during 2017. “It is worth mentioning the high levels of pollution detected in the port. Such levels can have a severe impact on air quality in nearby residential areas,” the group said. The report comes as the Junta de Andalucia recently approved plans to improve air

‘Ready’ for hacks Robles says Spain can face potential cyber strikes By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S Defence Minister has said the country is prepared for potential cyber attacks after British and Dutch authorities alleged Russia’s military intelligence services were behind a series of global strikes. Margarita Robles told a press conference following a meeting with NATO Defence Ministers the country is braced for ‘very real’ threats. Spain had put all necessary measures in place to protect its cyberspace and its citizens should not be alarmed, the minister added. Robles’ comments follow claims made by Britain’s Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt that Russia’s GRU was behind strikes on the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Democratic
National Committee and other organisations. It also comes as the Netherland’s Defence Ministry claimed it had foiled an attempted cyber attack on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) headquarters in The
Hague. Russia has denied any involvement in the incidents and called the accusations a ‘diabolical cocktail.’ There was no evidence to back up the claims from Britain and the Netherlands, a Kremlin spokesperson added. Robles said Spain had to be prepared in the face of threats of political interference, cyber attacks and ‘hybrid’ strikes. “Citizens have to be calm and to know that we are ready. But we will not abandon the channels of dialogue,” Robles said. The minister added it was ‘essential’ there were joint defence mechanisms both within NATO and the European Union (EU). “Spain is a reliable and serious NATO partner and we are committed to working on our

James Mattis, the United States’ Secretary of Defence, said last Thursday his country had given its offensive cyber

The celebration was first pushed for in the early 20th century with calls to recognise the ‘Haspanidad,’ or global Spanish-speaking community. The celebration fell in and out of favour during the Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco until it was officially recognised as a national holiday in the 1980’s.
Clean call THE Junta de Andalucia’s Environment spokesperson in Almeria Province Raul Enriquez has told El Ejido Council it must clean and adapt parts of the town’s ramblas amidst flooding concerns. The official’s call follows a ruling from Spain’s Supreme Court which found the ramblas did not comply with flooding control regulations.
Sea rescue EMERGENCY SERVICES personnel took a 65-year-old man to a Murcia hospital after bathers pulled him from the sea unconscious on a Pulpi beach. The 112 emergency services line said it was alerted to the man at around 12.20pm last Friday and took him to Lorca’s Rafael Mendez Hospital in a serious condition.

Groping trial A COURT in Almeria City has jailed a defendant for one year after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a bar in the provincial capital. Almeria’s Fifth Criminal Court heard the man came upon the woman while in a bar in the city’s Plaza Masnou de Almeria. Prosecutors told the court the defendant touched the woman’s behind as she walked through the door to the pub. He was guided by his sexu-
al desire, prosecutors added. The woman immediately told the defendant to stop and warned him she would report him to the police if he continued. She filed her complaint with National Police the same night after he touched her again. The judge presiding said the man’s defence was ‘spurious’ and unconvincing. The defendant has also been fined €300 and will able to appeal against the sentence.

Fireworks fall probe GUARDIA CIVIL officers have opened an investigation to find the cause of a fireworks tower falling over while shooting rockets in Pulpi, leaving around a dozen people injured. Police sources said several locals in the town had filed complaints with authorities after the accident took place during the town’s San Miguel feria on Saturday September 29. Around 5,000 people were in attendance, according to reports. Pulpi Mayor Juan Pedro Garcia

said the local council had provided assistance to those affected. Initial inquiries suggest the accident could have been caused by a rocket that fired in the wrong direction, causing the rest of the tower to fall over. Adults and children were left with cuts and burns after the incident and emergency services had to be called on. None of the injuries were serious, the emergency services said. The investigation continues.

Female friendly SPAIN has come fifth in a ranking of countries where women feel secure, respected, equal and unthreatened. The University of Georgetown’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security’s study named Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia and Spain the most female friendly countries. Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan came bottom in the ranking of a total of 153 states. The report comes after Spanish politicians promised progress on gender equality amidst protests against sexism and gender violence this year. The university’s study took into account cases of gender violence, the representation of women in parliament, safety and legal systems. Spain ranked highly in almost all the categories. The country came 11th in gender violence rankings with the study finding that 13 per cent of Spanish women had experienced some form of sexist attack in their lifetimes. More than 80 per cent of Spanish women surveyed said they felt secure, with the report’s authors commenting the metric measured feelings of security and not freedom. Spain came 20th in terms of women participat-
ing in politics. Female members of the Cortes Generales, the country’s Parliament, make up 39 per cent of the total number of lawmakers. Spain topped the ranking of equality in its legal system with the least amount of discriminatory laws on its books. The study follows protests over alleged sexism in Spanish society this year as well as pledges from politicians to make the country more gender equal. Millions took part in the feminist general strike on International Women’s Day on March 8 over claims they continued to face sexism and discrimination in the workplace and wider society. Thousands more rallied after a Navarra court cleared five men of rape charges in connection with a sex attack on a woman at Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls festival. They were found guilty of the lesser charge of sexual assault in what became known as the La Manada (Wolfpack) case. Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has committed his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government to promoting female equality. There are 11 women in Spain’s 17-strong Council of Ministers, a move designed to make the government more gender equal.

A hidden danger WHILST everyone is aware of the problems caused by plastic and governments are banning the use of free plastic bags, there is an insidious danger amongst us that you may not appreciate. One of the most popular snacks in Britain and most of the rest of the world are potato crisps and other similar vegetable based snacks. The packets they come in are currently non-recyclable because they are not made of foil as many would think, but are made of up to nine layers of plastic. Walkers, Britain’s largest crisp producers bag 11 million packets a day which totals six billion crisp and other snack packets each year and the company which is owned by Pepsi Cola doesn’t expect to make its bags recyclable until 2025 (that’s 28 billion packets later). The reason for these different layers of plastic is to ensure that the crisps stay fresh, do not take on water or leak oil and do not burst open if dropped but what’s good for the product isn’t so good for the environment and examples of empty crisp packets from the 1980’s have been found on beaches in Europe. It’s not just Walkers who are to blame as most of these tasty snacks come in similar packaging, although Marks and Spencer have reduced the amount of air they put into their packets, thus reducing their size. One way of discovering if the bag is made from foil (as some are), just scrunch it in your hand - if it remains ‘scrunched’ it is foil and can be recycled; if it springs back it is probably metallised plastic film and not recyclable.

Mayor censure THE mayor of Huercal de Almeria has said his constituents remain his top priority after councillors from opposition parties filed a motion of censure against him over alleged mismanagement. Ismael Torres, of the conservative Partido Popular, said he had an ‘obligation’ to serve locals in the town. He has continued to stick to his mayoral schedule, which includes meetings with residents, after 10 councillors filed the motion in a bid to remove him from office. Torres said his commitments to residents had prevented him from contacting some councillors he formerly counted among his allies. “My first priority is the locals. Despite the noise and tricks of others, I am continuing to help them,” Torres said. He added he would have to work for them from ‘another place’ if the motion against

A special session of the council is due to be convened in the coming days. Members are set to asked to either side with the current mayor or vote him out of office under the terms of the motion. The motion comes eight months before local elections scheduled for the town.

Contaminated zones by Tara Rippin THE nuclear agency has admitted there are six radioactive contaminated sites in Spain. But none of the zones which are listed by the Nuclear Security Council (CSN), are officially classified as contaminated ground. This is because Spain has yet to produce a formal inventory of sites affected by radioactive leaks, 10 years after a royal decree ordered one to be compiled. The CSN argued the Nuclear Energy Law needs to be amended before the inventory can go ahead. And since 2008, no governmental moves have been made to achieve this. In November 1970, several dozen litres of highly radioactive liquid from a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant reportedly leaked from the Juan Vigon National Nuclear Energy Centre, inside Madrid’s university campus. The liquid spilled into the sewer system and reached the Manzanares River, making its way to the Jarama River, the adjoining irrigation canal, and into the Tagus River. The Franco regime is said to have

A spokesperson for CSN said the Ecological Transition Ministry is working on legal changes to allow for the approval of an official list of contaminated sites in Spain.

Franco funeral Airline bid by family Brexit worry By Tara Rippin THE family of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, want him to be buried with full ‘military honours’ if his remains are exhumed. His seven grandchildren have filed a petition with the Ombudsman’s Office to stop the removal of Franco’s
body from the Valley of the Fallen monument, a move which has been approved by the Spanish Congress. But if the plan’s go ahead, the dictator ’s family want him to be buried inside La Almudena Cathedral in the centre of Madrid. His relations have reportedly argued that under a
2010 decree, Franco is entitled to a military funeral with the ‘complete national anthem, volley shots and a cannon gun salute’. The decree states that this type of ceremony is granted to the Spanish king, the royal family, the prime minister, the defence minister, chief staffs of the forces, as well as general officers of the army, navy and air force. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged that Franco’s remains will be exhumed to strip him of his privileged position at the monument, but that it will be done with ‘dignity and respect’. He made no mention of an honorary funeral, which would defeat the purpose of removing his remains from the site where more than 33,000 victims of the Spanish Civil War are buried, without marked graves. The Franco family has a crypt at the cathedral which contains the remains of Franco’s daughter, Carmen Franco, as well as a vault at El Pardo cemetery, where his wife Carmen Polo is buried.

The Pew Research Centre’s report on opinions about the divisive President in 25 countries placed Spain at the bottom of rankings of in terms of trust. A total of 7 per cent of people in Spain, or almost one in 20, said they did trust the President to do the right thing regarding world affairs. France came second in Europe with 9 per cent, followed by Germany at 10 per cent. The centre said in a statement that the US’s global image had ‘plummeted’ following Trump’s election to the presidency. “Now, as the second anniversary of Trump’s election approaches, this new survey finds that Trump’s international image remains poor, while ratings for the United States are much lower than during Barack Obama’s presidency,” the centre said. His nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court caused controversy after a former schoolmate alleged he had sexually assaulted her. Kavanaugh denies the claims.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia were in the French capital to see a retrospective exhibit of Spanish surrealist painter Joan Miro’s work. The showing was called ‘Miro,
pour it from my dreams’ (Miro, la couler de mes rêves in French). Pictures posted to Twitter by the royal household showed the King and Queen accompanied by the Macrons in the Grand Palais gallery. Jean-Louis Prat, curator of the exhibition, was on hand to guide the royals and French head of state around the exhibit and explain some of the roughly 150 works on display. The King and Queen also met with the exhibition’s sponsors. They later dined with the Macrons at a Paris restaurant.

Fake gas inspectors A TRADE association that represents genuine gas installation and maintenance engineers in Spain has issued a new warning about fake ‘inspectors’ preying on vulnerable people. The body points out that as autumn and cooler weather has arrived the number of scams being reported is on the up. The scam is targeted mainly at the elderly and the association is calling on good neighbours to alert the vulnerable how the fraudsters act. “Often they pose as technicians of the gas company, often dressed in uniform, or
they say they come from the town hall or from the corresponding autonomous community,” says José María de la Fuente, the president of Agremia. The scammers turn up on the doorstep without warning to say that they have to conduct a gas inspection. They will generally declare the installation has a serious defect but charge exhorbitant prices for minor parts. There are reports that some people have been conned out of more than €100 to replace an out-ofdate gas hose that would cost around €5 from a hardware
store and take just minutes for the average person to easily change themselves. And Agremia, has reported that, sometimes, these false gas inspectors pressure people by saying that failure to carry out the review and the subsequent repairs will put their safety and that of their neighbors in serious danger. These fraudsters also sometimes say that if the inspection is not carried out, the gas can be cut off or they can be subject to heavy fines. The association recommends calling the police in case a stranger shows up at your door without a prior appointment.

by Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S Minister for Exiting the European Union (EU) has travelled to Madrid to meet with spokespeople for groups representing expatriates as well as Spanish politicians and business leaders. Robin Walker’s trip included talks with members of the Brexpats in Spain, Bremain in Spain, EuroCitizens and ECREU groups at the British Embassy in the Spanish capital. Issues including health and social care for expatriates in light of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU in March 2019 were discussed. There were also talks on outreach and communications with Walker and Embassy officials. The aim of the meetings was to provide the groups with updates on ongoing Brexit negotiations as well as an insight into Britain’s diplomatic work in Spain, its embassy said. Walker said he was pleased to meet with the representatives and update them on what the government was doing to safeguard their rights. “I valued the opportunity to hear their concerns about residency, pensions, onward movement and voting rights and the uncertainty many of them still feel over Brexit,” he said. The minister added the government’s top priority had always been to secure the rights of citizens and that the draft Withdrawal Agreement did that for British nationals in Spain. Simon Manley, Britain’s Ambassador to Spain, said
strong people-to-people links were at the heat of Britain’s relationship with Spain. “There are 180,000 Spanish people living in Britain and some 300,000 British people have chosen to make Spain their home. “I am pleased that Robin Walker was able to meet with representatives of British nationals’ citizens’ rights groups in Spain as well as Spanish government officials,” Manley said. The meetings follow comments from the president of Brexpats in Spain, Anne Hernandez, claiming the patience of her and her group’s members was running out over Brexit. “Theresa May’s failure to mention expatriates in her statements has show how little we matter to her,” Hernandez said.
THE Spanish operatic singer, Montserrat Caballé, best known by Brits for her ‘Barcelona’ duet with Queen’s Freddie Mercury, has died aged 85. At the request of the International Olympic Committee she recorded the duet, inspired by her home city, as one of the official theme songs for the 1992 Olympic Games. The soprano was born in Barcelona on April 12, 1933. She subsequently moved to Basel, Switzerland, where she made her professional debut in 1956 before singing all around the world. In 1987, Caballé made a rare excursion into the world of pop music when she released a duet with Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen,
which was titled ‘Barcelona.’ Mercury was a great admirer of Caballé, considering her voice to be ‘the best in the world.’ The single was followed by an album of the same name which was released the following year and featured further collaborations between the two performers.
Caballé also performed the song live, accompanied by a recording by Mercury, who had died in 1991, before the 1999 UEFA Champions League football final in Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. She died on October 6 at the age of 85, after being admitted to hospital in Barcelona last month.

No early election SPAIN’S Prime Minister has said he has no plans to call an early general election as opposition politicians and officials from his own party continue to lobby for a poll. Pedro Sanchez faced calls from Albert Rivera, leader of the centrist Ciudadanos party, to hold a snap election in order to help resolve the ongoing independence push in Cataluña. Members of the Prime Minister’s ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) have also said Sanchez should bring elections forward to capitalise on the party’s lead in the polls. It comes as scandals continue to dog the government, with many PSOE officials fearing
they could derail hopes of a future election victory. Rivera claimed Spain was currently in the hands of Cataluña’s pro-independence president Quim Torra. An election was the only way to loosen what Rivera said was Torra’s hold on power, the Ciudadanos leader added. Rivera also called for Article 155, the constitutional mechanism used to impose direct rule on the region following last year’s independence referendum and declaration, to be reinstated. Sanchez said his administration wanted to continue on the path of dialogue with Cataluña within the bounds of the law. “The answer is clear. We
want self-government and coexistence. Not independence,” he said on Twitter. The Prime Minister added he would hold elections if the Catalans chose to prioritise conflict over collaboration. It was his policy to wait until 2020, the end of the current legislative term, to hold a national vote and that he had no plans to bring it forward. PSOE officials have reportedly become concerned that scandals which have seen two ministers resign since the party took power in June could hamper its election chances going forward. The PSOE is currently around 10 points ahead of the opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP).

Francisco Tejon, who has been hunted since 2016 has starred in a reggaeton music video uploaded to YouTube by artist Clase A.
A police spokesman was quoted by El Mundo newspaper saying: ‘That’s him, there’s no doubt.’ The video shows Tejon and the singer stepping out of a Bentley Continental before arriving at a house party where they are surrounded by half-naked women and Champagne bottles.

The ministry’s Salary Information of Administration Posts (ISPA) showed Consuelo Moran Astorga, mayor of Matilla de Arzon in Castilla y Leon, earned the least of any city head in Spain. The mayor is not exclusively dedicated to the office meaning she does not work solely for the council. Manuela Carmena, the mayor of Madrid, took home the largest annual pay packet with €102,010 in gross earnings. The politician, of the Ahora Madrid party, reportedly gives away around €10,000 from her salary in

IPSA statistics showed there are 540 mayors who take home less than €1,000 a year for being the mayor of their towns and cities. Young people bank on digital YOUNG people aged between 18 and 35 years old make 80 per cent of payments via their bank cards, and only 20 per cent in cash according to research from BBVA Data & Analytics. This ratio is even higher i n l a rg e c i t i e s , w h e r e t h e average number of transactions made by card has risen by 170 per cent over the last three years. Millennials make 44 per cent fewer withdrawals than the average Spanish person, while those over 60 are 33 per cent above the average. Card transactions have increased by 136 per cent in Barcelona since 2015, and by 103 per cent in Madrid. By contrast, payments by card only represented 45.6 per cent of the total in Melilla, 40.8 per cent in

LAW CHANGE: The news will be welcomed by modernising banks.
EU banks on the future SPANISH banks are anticipating a regulatory change by the European Union that will allow them (and other European banks) to stop accounting for their investment in digital technology as costs. This will mean that they will no longer have to deduct this expenditure from the tier one capital ratio. According to an internal document from one of the Spanish banks, European officials have reached an agreement to ensure that future investments in FinTech will not adversely affect solvency calculations. The same document highlights that the European Banking Authority (EBA) should develop new technical standards to establish what can be considered digital software. Despite the reaching of this agreement in principle, the timescale to introduce it has not yet been clarified. Deloitte’s analysts have estimated that the new banking legislative package could be introduced in the second half of 2019. Banking bosses have been working for years to convince the European authorities to implement this change. European banks spend more than €18 million on FinTech, and this is expected to rise to €50 million in the near future.

I’m offended that you’re offended LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I DUNNO, it really does appear that in this day and age you can pick up any old rock and discover some ‘offended’ creep skulking under there somewhere. This week was a real humdinger. The left wing (natch!) National Union of Students, (natch again!), have decided that public hand clapping, whooping and cheering should be banned as they consider it ‘offensive to deaf people’! You really couldn’t make it up. Do these young idiots ever do any actual studying? Do they ever get their heads down and use their free libraries and state financed education establishments (which many a third world student would give their eye teeth for) to create a little brain power? Or are their days spent in cuckoo land, dreaming up any lunatic scheme or idea, merely to give themselves an excuse for existing? Apparently, their alternative suggestion to applause, is the use of ‘Jazz Hands.’ This entails raising the arms and enthusiastically waggling the hands and fingers. (Think Black and White Minstrel Show.) ‘Er, hold on a minute, no noise? Wouldn’t that be offensive to blind people? You see, all this PC
APPLAUSE: Is this really offensive? and ‘offended’ clap trap actually has no end. It simply goes on and on. I may be offended by deaf people communicating by sign language because it doesn’t include me! Or upset because pigs have been excluded from my school books, (yep!). There are billions of people on earth; whatever your opinions you’re bound to offend someone. Did you know that some people are offended by the use of the expression ‘rule of thumb?’ This is because the thumb was originally in-
troduced to measure the thickness of the stick you could use to beat the wife! Just to get back briefly to the student ‘clapping’ opposition, I think I’ve solved it. Passing wind would take care of it. An appreciative audience, in a communal coordinated gas release, would satisfy everyone. Deaf, blind, dumb, physically impaired. All would benefit. There’s one for your pathetic student union to contemplate, when it next engages
in the pea brained activity it laughingly calls ‘educated debate.’ Oh, and while you’re about it, when you come to the question of a second Brexit referendum, which no doubt has been supported at many a gathering of your laughable leftist liaisons, what if a second vote yielded the same leave result? Any plans for that? ‘Course not. With the ignorance of the young, you’re all far too arrogant to admit you may get something wrong. It’s time our next generation started to talk of WHEN we leave. Not IF! Now that would be a constructive use of taxpayer’s money. I’ll leave all our young time-wasters with a motif for their new t-shirts. TECH FOR THE TIMID CHIPS may be smart, but are we, the users? In an era which is definitely higher tech than many of us are, take my neighbour ’s fancy new phone. Please. He happily downloads all sorts of goodies on it, then can’t find the downloads and constantly has to ask me. A recent survey found that most people barely use 10 per cent of their computers’ features or abilities. Many smartphone users have no idea how to access their phone’s settings, let alone change them. That sounds about right. Back in the old days of video recorders my partner never managed to get the thing to do anything more sophisticated than wipe my favourite movie, or record 240 minutes of snow. For those who spent the 70’s learning to master Tippex on typewriters, technophobia has become a contemporary affliction right up there with eating disorders, gadgetdriven sleep deprivation and unintentional suicide-by-selfie. In fact it took my own father the best part of a week to get the hang of his simple office calculator, by Sharp, and then the boss threw him a curveball by swopping it for a Casio and he was stumped. These days manufacturers are churning out appliances able to do
all sorts of things many users simply cannot make them do or do not want them to do. We’re not just overwhelmed by the onward march of technology - we’re buried alive under several squillion avalanches of the stuff. Edison cylinders begat wax records which begat vinyl LPs
which begat digital CDs which begat MP3s and just as we and our bank balances have caught up with the begatting, they replace the lot again with something even more daunting and with a shelflife closely akin to a fruit-fly’s. Everything you buy is loaded to the chips with features. A feature is often something that you do not want, do not want to pay extra for, will never use, but cannot get the thing you do want without. Our new TV has a control panel which would shame a 747, a remote zapper looking like a small computer, a manual which has done serious damage to a Brazilian rain forest, and the ability to screen two programmes at once. Umm, why? Is there any consumer out there plain schizoid enough to want to watch two programmes at once? My long-suffering partner hasn’t even managed to get one programme on the darn thing yet, but give her time; she’s only on page 28 of the manual: ‘Taking the set out of the box.’

Finding help THE quickest way to solve a technical problem is to ask the nearest six-year-old. Seriously though, living in the 21st century and not knowing how to tweet or send an e-mail feels overwhelming. There’s an app for that, he said, then ducked. Technophobes are not alone. The internet is awash with dummies-type books, courses and self-help texts to help the technically-challenged, and some really do start at ‘Step One: switch on.’ Type ‘Smartphones for seniors’ into Google and you’ll be deluged with four million hits. ‘Learn Microsoft Office’ produced a breathtaking 315 million results last time I tried. ‘How to e-mail’: 11 billion hits! Or just ask a neighbour. As long as it’s not me. From now on, like Manuel in Fawlty Towers, ‘I know nuuuthing!’

Let the best man win Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS regular readers of my weekly rant fest know, I am one of the world’s finest armchair experts on all things sport. Near the top of the things I enjoy most is F1 motor racing and I’m a particularly big fan of Lewis Hamilton. I always watch it if I can. This week Lewis Hamilton won the Russian Grand Prix and traditionally, at the end of the race, there would be a great celebration. He usually leaps from his car, runs over to his massive team of mechanics and other Mercedes team members, and jumps at them hi-fiving and hugging the ones at the front. This week’s win did not go like that at all. Lewis sat in his car till the second place driver, his teammate Valtteri Bottas, got out of his car. Lewis then just walked over to Valtteri, shook his hand and told him he was sorry, then walked slowly off over to the Mercedes team. but not because he was the best driver on the day, but because of team orders that forced his teammate Bottas to move over and let Hamilton win. This is wrong in so many ways. Winning is not winning if you have to cheat and that’s what they did. They cheated the best driver on the day out of his rightful place. It wasn’t even that if Hamilton came second they would still not be in front in either the manufacturer’s or driver’s championship. And what about if you like a little flutter and had a few bob on Bottas to win, after seeing how he had performed to get pole position (first on grid)? How can this not be race fixing? If this is now the acceptable way of winning a race it shouldn’t be. The best have to win. We mustn’t let this ‘win at any cost’ get worse than it is. In F1 it’s obvious if it happens, but it’s the same in all sports. In the Olympics the whole of the Russian team was banned for drug taking. Lance Armstrong was a multi-winner but only because of drugs and the list goes on. I think the rules for F1 have to be changed. There must not be team orders. Every driver is there to win, not to make up the numbers. Mercedes should be fined and made to forfeit points. Let the old saying ‘May the best man win’ actually mean something. mikesenker@gmail.com

RECENTLY I wrote about students being ‘bribed’ with biscuits. Now we have Waitrose being hammered by both cashstrapped students and parents for its pricy list of student store cupboard ‘essential’ ingredients, described by the supermarket as ‘a starter kit for the fledgling cook about to fly the nest.’ This includes rose harissa paste, organic cider vinegar, organic soy sauce and Marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Powder - the whole list costing freshers £13 and they still wouldn’t have anything to eat! But hang on, where’s the avocado? Or the wholemeal organic multi-grain toast from Waitrose’s Fairtrade line to slather it on? To be fair, though, students no longer restrict themselves to the traditional diet of Pot Noodles, baked beans and cold pasta. Mainly due to the internet, a new generation of young food ‘vloggers’ and YouTubers have shown students how to cook creatively and cheaply. In fact, all the Waitrose items listed have a long shelf life and, though an ini-

Supermarket mocked for its posh ‘store cupboard’ essentials tial outlay’s involved, should last for quite some time. The bouillon powder is really useful, lasts for ages and a superb suggestion. Even the rose harissa works out relatively economically considering how much, err, bite it can give to umpteen meals before the jar’s used up. Maybe all the carping’s just a classic example of people sniggering because it’s upmarket Waitrose? Good quality seasonings help turn cheap, simple ingredients into nutritious meals. Presumably some of those whinging wouldn’t think twice about a student forking out £13 on a pizza? Years ago when I was a student (Vesta curries, Angel Delight, anyone?), one flatmate used to whip up incredible roast dinners for us (buying ‘sell by’ date meat and veg from the supermarket just before closing) and loads of other delicious meals. Our store cupboard was rammed with lots of weird and wonderful-sound-

Can they park in the street? I live in an urbanisation where there is no proper parking space in the street for a kilometre. The street is a cul de sac. However, for the last 30 years people have squeezed their cars into the street without any problems. The street has no name and there has never been a ‘No Exit’ sign. Now a neighbour has complained to the police there were too many cars parked. The police came and then asked the urbanisation to put a yellow line and a board to prohibit parking. Now I can’t get visitors or a plumber because they have to park on a yellow line and can get a fine. Most of the neighbours have the same problem. My question is: Do we complain to the community or to the police? N P (Costa del Sol)

He secretly eavesdropped conversations that have embarrassed everyone from the former King to Cabinet ministers and he has made it known that three copies of the tapes are safely beyond reach outside Spain. He has boasted in prison that he is preparing a traca final - the ground-moving sequence of big bangs that ends a fireworks display. So if Villarejo is planning to go out with a bang, how many more public figures are already whimpering in private?
Getting priorities right PARTIDO POPULAR politician Celia Villalobos was twice fined for not supporting Alberto Ruiz allardon’s misogynist attempt at reforming Jose Luis Rodriguez’s Abortion Law. Whirlwind on the horizon WHO would be Quim Torra? Nominally regional president of Cataluña, he is a ventriloquist’s dummy for Carles Puigdemont, his predecessor who fled to Belgium following an inconclusive unilateral declaration of independence. Torra still has to maintain law and order for the 50 per cent of Catalans opposed to independence. There was trouble on the first anniversary of the October 1 independence referendum when the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR), urged by Torra to ‘keep up the pressure,’ responded by blocking roads, motorways and the AVE railway lines. There’s only so much pressure that can be applied without breaking the law. So the regional government
had to call out the regional police force. Not known for wearing kid gloves, they charged energetically when hooded protesters tried to storm the regional parliament. “They’re not October 1 people,” Puigdemont insisted afterwards, but a year ago Catalan separatists sowed the wind and the radicals will reap a whirlwind. “Toto I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas,” Dorothy, herself a whirlwind victim, said in the Wizard of Oz. How long before we hear Torra say, “Carles, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Cataluña”?

by Adam Whalley-Lewis DR WHO returned to BBC1 on Sunday and despite the first episode of the new series being set in Sheffield (was I the only one expecting the guys from The Full Monty to put in a guest appearance?) Jodie Whittaker landed pretty well. I’m guessing that a gaggle of male fans now won’t now need to hide their Dr posters and I’m pretty sure Jodie will have some female fans too. I wasn’t too sure about Bradley Walsh being the Dr’s sidekick, I mean, would The Governess even fit in the Tardis, but he was great and so were Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. The new Doctor handled a beast roaming the back streets of Sheffield, memory loss and all new hair and make up with ease. You don’t need to already be a fan or to watch each week to enjoy the new series, but a little bit like having your personal favourite James Bond, you might find yourself being slightly nostalgic for an earlier time when you hid behind the sofa when the daleks appeared. GOOD START: Jodie Whittaker is the new Dr Who. through the latest offering from Strictly Come Dancing last week and boy did we need a guide. Gladys Knight was fab-u-lous, who doesn’t love a James Bond theme, but as for the rest of the show, what on earth was going on? I had barely recovered from Bruno throwing himself off his chair, presumably attention seeking, when the professional dancers appeared in a sort of home-made fish pond, proceeded to cover each other in water, were rained on and then all headed off for a hot shower.
Some classics, Singing in the Rain amongst them, don’t need a modern take thank you and certainly not one where the objective was to make the dance costumes see-through. What would Sir Bruce have made of it? Lee Ryan and Nadiya Bychkova were the second couple to be voted off, which surprised nobody, least of all Lee. Your next dose of Strictly is on BBC1, Saturday evening. Monkman and Seagull concluded their (very strange) Genius Guide to Britain on
BBC2, Monday evening. If you haven’t heard of Eric and Bobby before, they found fame (not my words) via University Challenge and as the BBC seems to like to do, were given their own show. You will recognise the format, put two celebrities in a car and film them driving around Britain. The problem here though is that Eric and Bobby are brilliant at being really academic and their intellect is beyond question, but you get the sense that Mum did their road trip packing and someone in the production crew needed to remind them to put petrol in the car. They tried to use their brilliance to work stuff out, but even when they got it a bit wrong (they didn’t actually manage to get the height of that well-known mast in Yorkshire right) they still congratulated themselves for being brilliant. Maybe a better pairing would have been The Archbishop of York and Jeremy Kyle, what do you think? No laughing matter Making a stand can bring rewards HAVING the courage to confront injustice is never easy. Perversely, the often long and difficult journey makes as many enemies as friends, and the temptation to give up becomes strong. Hard lessons are learnt along the way: such as the innate ability of those who hold the power to defend the indefensible; that the legal system can cloud issues rather than clarify, and become part of the problem; that politicians’ promises are merely words.

HEARING: EU investigating Monte Pego problem. When this involves the sewage system for 1,500 dwellings, the problems can rapidly become serious. For the residents of the beautiful urbanisation of Monte Pego, on the Costa Blanca, they did. For many years the water discharged from the sewage treatment plant had not been properly treated and Pego Town Hall paid large fines for the pollution. By 2017 this pollution had become almost raw sewage, as confirmed by laboratory tests arranged by the Residents
Association, Pro Monte Pego (PMP). Something had to be done. The town hall still refused to act, even though the large Marjal Natural Park and rice fields stand directly in the line of the pollution. In order to protect the urbanisation, the stunning Natural Park’s flora and fauna, and the good name of the area, the bold decision was taken in the summer of 2017 to petition the EU Parliament. It took courage, but the cause was just, the rewards potentially enormous. Political pressure from the EU could unlock the stalemate. To the great delight of the PMP Association the EU Petitions Committee accepted the submission - a triumph in itself - and over the last six months evidence has been gathered and shared with the EU. Now the exciting news has arrived that members of PMP have been invited to Brussels to appear before the committee, and hear their verdict. If the EU supports the petition, then the political pressure on the town hall and other authorities will be of huge help, and of course, vindication for the courage to stand up for justice. Here was a man who asked nothing for himself. Not money, nor power but had a simple message - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It doesn’t really matter if HE didn’t say it or who said it or if he existed - it’s a damn good and sane idea to follow. I was brought up in a mixed religious family - Catholic and Protestant and everyone got along with each other. I can’t recall any discussions/arguments about religion - maybe we were the lucky ones. I too am horrified and disgusted about the behaviour of these paedophile clerics. They should be, defrocked, stripped of their ‘titles’ and banned from ever having contact with children. I read some time ago that the reason priests are forbidden to marry is the business of inheritance. If a married priest died (coming from a rich family ) his inheritance went to his wife and family. But if he was not married his money would go to the church. I think we should all do - as far as possible - the right thing and remember the old adage; the love of money is the root of all evil. Let it be the show to visit A farewell to Rosendo HAVING played the Almanzora Fair earlier this year, Spanish rock singer and guitarist Rosendo is returning to the town on Friday November 9 as part of his farewell tour which is taking him around Spain. With 15 solo albums under his belt, the former member of Ñu and Leño is not retiring completely, he has just decided to take a rest from touring and considering he has been playing since 1972, he possibly feels that life on the road is not as attractive at nearly 65. Whilst he will be playing a number of his compositions from all his years of recording, he will no doubt be including a range of numbers from his 2017 album De Escalde Y Tricnchera. Tickets for the 11pm gig at the Nave Polivalente in Cuevas del Almanzora cost €25 and can be purchased online from the usual ticket agencies.

Children had fun husking the corn last Saturday.
A modernised old tradition ANXIOUS to ensure that old traditions are kept alive (but in this case updated) the Brotherhood of San Marcos in conjunction with the Adra Council will celebrate a historical event this Saturday. It started last Saturday when a large number of people, many of them children, congregated at El Huerto Jardín de La Alquería where they proceeded to husk large numbers of corn cobs in keeping with the old tradition of local farmers
and residents shelling the cobs to grind into flour for both animals and family during the winter. This time however, rather than producing flour, the kernels will be turned into delicious popcorn in an evening of fun and education. The Molino del Lugar (mill) will be the centre for the festivities which will start at 5pm with the handing out of doughnuts with chocolate, followed by traditional games for the children and the
first serving of popcorn. From 8pm, the mill will open its doors to allow visitors to this historical building which is part of the Adra Museum and which hosts the exhibit ‘La Andaluza Ceres.’ Next will be entertainment with a number of traditional workers’ songs and Fandango Cortijero and when the entertainment is finished, at 11pm more popcorn will be handed out to those still in attendance.

A GROUP of campaigners have met with Spain’s Development Minister to lobby for the reopening of a rail line that once ran from Almanzora to towns in Granada Province. The Association of Friends of the Railroad District of Baza asked Luis Abalos Meco to prioritise increasing the funding already allocated to studying the reopening in this year’s budget. The group claimed the current €500,000 was ‘very insufficient’ and have asked for it to rise to €1.6 million. The €1.6 million figure was suggested by technicians at the University of Granada who said it was now up to officials with Spain’s ADIF railway infrastructure body to draw up proposals. The Association said the increase should go ahead so that plans could be drawn up. “The line is much needed infrastructure for the region which has been without a railway for 33 years,” the group said. The line the group are lobbying for once ran from Guadix and Baza and Granada Province to Almanzora in Almeria and Lorca in the Murcia Region. The Association drew up a report last August that claimed towns along the former rail line have seen their populations drop and land fall into disuse since it closed. TRAIN CLAIMS: The group have called for the disused line to reopen. Train report claimed there were ‘significant’ declines in the number of people living in the 11 towns studied. Cantoria was among those whose population has fallen during the 33 years since the line’s closure. The report highlighted Seron and Tijola in Almeria Province and Gor in Granada as areas that had seen particularly marked declines. A fall in the number of people living in the areas

had also put more than 200,000 hectares of land at risk of ‘desertification’, the group claimed. The phenomenon refers to the process of land drying up as people leave meaning it is harder and in some cases impossible to recover it for farming. The effects of the loss the line also included the towns having less workers causing industry and agriculture to move out, further harming the local economy.
A PROGRAMME of activities has begun at a Macael sports club that resulted from a €36,000 funding package agreed last year. The ‘Sharing Goals’ initiative began on October 1 and is due to run until September 30, 2019. It is being put on at the San Macros sports club in collaboration with that of Los Carriles. Both clubs received the €36,000 in backing from an agreement signed between the head of San Macros, Francisco Jose Cruz Guevara, and Antonio Garcia Simon, the Business Area Director of Almeria-Levante with La Caixa bank’s Bancaja Foundation. Those running the club said the funds would allow them to put on activities which would help to promote healthy lifestyles for the people of Macael. It would also help to get more locals involved in sports which would improve their quality of life. The project follows similar joint efforts between the sports clubs and the bank. Both clubs attract users from across the Almanzora area.

Mayor reinstatement bid ALBOX’S former mayor, who was removed from the post after corruption allegations surfaced against him, has asked to be restored to the position. The left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) Rogelio Mena, originally elected with almost 50 per cent of the vote in 2015, said he should be allowed to serve his full term. He won a total of 2,511 votes in that year’s ballot. Mena claimed he had been a victim of political persecution over allegations he misused public funds and withheld documents from opposition groups. The claims saw him hounded out of office and brought before courts to face trial. A settlement was reached over the charges last month. The court had disqualified him from serving in public office for more than two years. Mena claimed the fact he still had eight months left of his term to serve meant he should be allowed to take up the post again. ‘The constitutional rights of democratically elected officials and those of voters expressing their will at the ballot box cannot be impeded,’ he said in a letter posted to social media. Mena’s membership of the PSOE was revoked following his conviction. Party sources said they had not received any request for it to be reinstated. Mena’s claims of political targeting centre

Children In Need fundraiser A RACE night featuring an auction is due to be put on in La Alfoquia in aid of Children In Need this November. The event, set to be held at Bar La Union, has been scheduled for Saturday November 17. There may also be a live link to the BBC’s Children In Need broadcast on the night, the organisers said. The night is set to feature an auction. The organisers have appealed for anyone who has items they would like to donate to the auction to do so before the night in November. “All funds raised at the auction are due to go to the great cause that is Children In Need,” the organisers said. The event is due to begin at 6.30pm. Tickets cost €12, €6 of which will be donated to Children In Need. The cost of
the ticket also includes a fully cooked buffet. There is due to be a comedy show and live music performance following the race night and auction. A live link to the BBC may also be made depending on the broadcaster’s schedule, the organisers said. More information is set to be available once the BBC print and send posters which are due to feature details on how people can donate directly to Children In Need. Children In Need takes place every year. The charity supports around 2,400 projects across Britain to help disadvantaged children stay safe, happy and get opportunities to achieve their full potential. Health centre funds THE Andalucian Health Service (SAS) is set to take on an additional 126 staff members and make improvements in centres across Almeria Province including in Albox. The new medical personnel, set to be taken on this month, are part of a bid to bolster staff numbers in primary care centres across the Northern Health Area of Almeria. Staff numbers are set to rise by 6 per cent as a result of the increase, according to SAS. Gracia Fernandez, the Junta de Andalucia’s representative in Almeria, said the extra staff and renovations came at a cost of €730,000 which would be taken from this year’s budget. A further €4.2 million will be spent on the centres in 2019, Fernandez added.The Junta officials also said the centres would see 20 new pieces of equipment installed.
Got the power THE Almanzora region has come a step closer to getting a new power line after authorities published the plans and opened them up for a public consultation last Thursday. Proposals for a 400 kilovolt dual circuit, which would run between Baza and Caparacena in Granada Province if built, have been published in the Official State Gazette (BOE). The public was given 30 days to submit items for the consultation from last Thursday. The plans include two construction projects. One, worth €59.5 million, covers the construction of the pylon network between Baza and Caparecena and the fitting of power cables to them. The other covers the expansion of a substation in Caparecena to cope with the increased capacity, due to cost €1.34 million. There are also plans to extend the line from Baza to Ribina which would see substations in both towns expanded if they go ahead. Spanish government sources said towns across Almeria Province, as well as ones in Granada and Jaen, would see a boost to their power capacity if the line is built. Official estimates state the project could generate around €1 billion worth of investment into the area’s power grid. A total of six firms are reportedly poised to become involved with the project if it goes ahead. The new power line would span a length of almost 123 kilometres if built. About 121.5 kilometres of the line will run through a double circuit while 1.3 kilometres will be a single circuit. The project comes as part of plans to improve energy supplies which were drawn up by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government. The Development Plan for the Electricity Transport Network launched in 2015 and is due to continue into 2020. More than 100 towns could see improvements to their energy supplies if the line is built.

Vinfast vies for attention VINFAST, a subsidiary of Vietnemese conglomerate Vingroup, unveiled its first two passenger vehicles to large crowds of curious journalists at the Paris Motor Show on Tuesday. This relatively new entrant to the world of car manufacturing revealed an SUV and a saloon in what is thought to be a long line of planned machines including a range of electric cars, buses and scooters. The LUX A2.0 Sedan and the LUX SA2.0 SUV are Italian designed, with European technology and ‘Vietnamese spirit.’ They are understood to have been developed following an unusual nationwide poll of 62,000 people in Vietnam, in which participants chose their favourite design from a range of sketches. The results are sleek and modern, and Le Thi Thu Thuy, chairwoman of VinFast, said: “With our ambitious plans to bring these two vehicles to market in such a short time, it was crucial for us to make a big entrance and an immediate impact, and we certainly did that today.”
Ex-football star David Beckham also addressed the crowds at the press conference, with Beckham stating that it was ‘a thrill to be in Paris to celebrate the arrival of a new carmaker on the global stage.’ He added that he could see how the VinFast design team had been able to evoke ‘such a beautiful country in the lines of these amazing new cars.’ With the cars due to be delivered to Vietnamese motorists from September 2019, and international markets thereafter, Le Le Thi Thu Thuy acknowledged the short timescale to which they were working. Vingroup launched the project just over a year ago and has already built a sprawling 355-hectare factory in northern Vietnam, capable of producing a rumoured 250,000 cars per year. “It is crucial for us to make a big entrance and an immediate impact,” she added, perhaps explaining why David Beckham was brought in for the unveiling.
TOYOTA and SoftBank are forming a joint venture to offer services using autonomous vehicles, in a sign that both are taking significant steps into the technology. The business, which will be called Monet Technologies Corp, will start with two billion yen (€15.3 million) in capital. It will initially be focusing on the Japanese market, offering ride-hailing services for public agencies and private companies, before looking to go global. SoftBank said the company could eventually perform a whole host of ‘just in time’ services, such as preparing food in transit as it is being delivered, combining its platform for the internet of things with Toyota’s connected vehicle technology. Monet will not develop its own autonomous vehicles, instead looking at the services that such vehicles can provide. SoftBank founder Masayoshi said the mobility company was “just the first step.” He said: “There will be a second and third and I hope that the connection will deepen going forward.” The decision to form a joint venture, of which SoftBank will own just over half, comes as the latest in a series of efforts by both companies to move into driverless technology. Toyota earlier this year debuted a self-driving research

It also has holdings in Uber and Grab, as well as Chinese company Didi Chuxing and India’s Ola. Vivek Vaidya, Asia Pacific vice president for automotive and transport at Frost and Sullivan, said that partnerships were “the way to go.” “SoftBank has various strategic investments in e-hailing companies and now they have started expanding in developing
new chip specifically for autonomous cars. Toyota may want to benefit from that.”

Powered by a 5.0 litre V8 engine packing a potent 457 hp, the RC F has a top speed of 270 kph (168 mph) and a searing 0-100 kph time of just 4.5 seconds. Not surprisingly, it has selectable driving modes for either road or track! Average fuel economy is 8.8 kpl (25 mpg) - respectable with such power on tap - and emissions are 258g/km. The race-bred visual styling of this model makes it a genuine head-turner and several people who I asked to guess its price estimated €100,000 or more. In fact, it is €70,607 (£62,690). drive right across Europe and still arrived fresh and relaxed. This large coupe’s interior has luxury ambiance, and while it does have four seats, the rear pair are in effect just for children. Front occupants get plenty of room and very comfortable powered seats, and the dashboard has an unusual tiered design, but is entirely functional and userfriendly. Boot space is not largest in the sector, but still very practical at 374 litres. The standard kit list is impressive, and includes multimedia screen, 10-speaker premium sound system, sat-nav and reversing camera, parking sensors and eight airbags. Safety features include Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist, Stability Control, and Vehicle Dynamic Management. This Lexus has rivals in its sector, most notably the BMW M4 Coupe which is arguably a little more nimble to handle. But when you add the sheer visual impact of the RC F, its superior refinement and the brand’s legendary reliability, in my view it is the overall winner.
