A SECOND killing has taken place in Axarquia in one week. Police have arrested a 46year-old man on suspicion of murder and breaching a restraining order after a 44year-old woman was found s tabbe d t o d e a t h i n h e r home in El Morche. The mother of two, named only as Manoli C S, is repo r t e d t o h a v e b ee n s tabbe d u p t o 1 2 t i m e s in the apartment she had lived in for a short time in the Mirador building on Calle Poniente. A judge has since jailed a man named as Juan Antonio ML - reportedly the victim’s boyfriend - without bail. Police explained the Torre del Mar local had previously breached a restraining or-

d er p re v en tin g h im from contacting Manoli and had been arrested on three occasions on July 7 and August 12 and 22. Residents in El Morche to ld o n e p u b lic a tio n t he couple had ‘very frequent’ public arguments but that Manoli told friends she could not live without her partner. Police say the victim was known to have been in o th er v io le n t rela tionships, however, and they are not ruling out other possible suspects. Officers from the Local Police were first called to the scene at around 3am last Saturday after neighbours reported hearing screams. Seeing blood coming from the entrance, police called in the Guardia

Abusers face jail PROSECUTORS are seeking prison sentences for a father and brother accused of sexually abusing a sixyear-old girl in 2010. The girl’s father who is now 74 years old is facing eight years in prison, while her 27-year-old brother faces three years and eight months in jail after they allegedly sexually assaulted the girl in their family home. The victim’s 44-yearold mother may also receive a two-year sentence after she was accused of watching the incident but doing nothing. The al l eged at t ack, whi ch t ook pl ace i n a small town in Axarquia as yet unnam ed by t he au-

thorities, is said to have taken place in the victim’s parents’ bedroom after the girl was dragged there and pinned down by her father. The girl was placed in a foster family in December 2010 before the incident came to light and was reported in February 2015. Prosecutors are now seeking €70,000 in compensat i on f or t he vi ct i m , €50,000 from her brother and €20,000 from her parent s, i n addi t i on t o t he prison sentences. The victim’s brother is said to ‘suffer from mental disability,’ and may theref or e r ecei ve a sm al l er prison sentence than his father.

PM speaks at UN Sanchez calls for empathy and co-operation in speech By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S Prime Minister said that every country had an obligation to work towards solving global challenges in his first United Nations (UN) speech last Thursday. Pedro Sanchez spoke before the UN’s General Assembly in New York. The body has seen other world leaders including British Prime Minister Theresa May and United States President Donald Trump address it in recent weeks. Sanchez said Spain was committed to defending the values that underpinned the UN including co-operating with other states, fighting for human rights and working towards global peace and security. He added all countries had a responsibility to show empathy

when facing common challenges. “This time does not need national or exclusive messages. We all have an obligation to help,” he said. Sanchez said Spain had demonstrated its commitment to UN values by rejecting

“nationalist” narratives of ongoing migration into the country from Africa and the Middle East. “I feel proud of a society that has not allowed itself to be radicalised by xenophobic rhetoric based on fear of the other,” he said. The Prime Minister went on to defend Spain’s handling of the issue which he said was designed to tackle the root causes of migration including poverty and environmental damage. The comments come as Spain and other countries prepare to sign the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Marrakech in Morocco this December. They also follow claims made previously by Pablo Casado, leader of the opposition conservative Partido Popu-

Minister Maroto said her department is working with local governments

around Spain as well as those working within the sector to ‘find a solution’ to deal with the influx. She revealed the government is also considering creating one central register of rental properties, rather than the current system of regional registers. The move comes after hundreds of home owners submitted applications to register their properties on the Andalucian Tourism Registry ahead of last week’s deadline, with 500 requests made between Tuesday and Friday of last week.

‘DEMOCRACTIC YEARS’: The Provisional Government took power after the revolution

Revolt turns 150 THE 150th anniversary of Spain’s Glorious Revolution took place last week, a period which saw the overthrow of a Spanish monarch and the country’s first republic take power. Several events have been put on to mark the occasion of Spain’s brief Sexenio Democratico, including round table discussions with historians in Madrid last Tuesday and this Wednesday. The Sexenio Democratico, six democratic years in English, refers to the period from 1868 when Isabella II was overthrown and the restoration of the monarchy under Alfonso XII in 1875. Discontent over the Queen’s rule erupted during the 1860’s in the wake of the first financial crisis of Spanish capitalism in 1866 and political problems. A group of disgruntled progressives and democrats, including General Juan Prim, met in Ostend in Belgium in 1866. They agreed to overthrow Isabella II and to create a democratically-elected assembly in her place. Naval forces under the command of Admiral Juan Bautista Topete mutinied in Cadiz in September 1868. Generals Prim and Francisco Serrano decided

to act and arrived in Spain shortly after to seize power. Forces loyal to the Queen were defeated at the Battle of Alcolea on September 28. Isabella left Spain for France where she died in exile in 1904. Democratic, liberal and republican political factions sought to create a coalition to govern Spain and formed the Provisional Government. They decided to create a constitutional monarchy and eventually decided Amadeo of Savoy should rule. A new constitution was approved as a democratic Cortes created, with all men over the age of 25 given the vote. The government granted freedom to the press and also abolished slavery. King Amadeo I’s rule lasted two years. His reign was followed by the First Spanish Republic which was proclaimed in 1873. It was beset by revolt from Carlists loyal to the monarchy and gave way to a dictatorship under General Serrano in 1874. Serrano stepped aside at the end of that year. Prince Alfonso, son of Isabella II, travelled from England to Spain and became King Alfonso XII ending one of Spain’s first experiments with democracy.

How very sad WHEN one hears about the devastation following the underwater earthquake that set off another Tsunami, this time in Indonesia, it makes you realise how petty one’s own problems can be. With nearly 900 people reported dead already and the expectation that this number will steadily increase as more remote areas of the affected island are reached, it seems that no matter what anyone does nature will always be in control. It is reported that there were supposed to be 21 buoys in the surrounding waters set to give early warning of any potential Tsunami, but also according to reports all of them had either been stolen or vandalised which meant that they were of no real use. Sadly, although a warning was broadcast, the actual warning was not accurate as it underestimated the likely severity, many people didn’t receive the warning due to power cuts caused by the earthquake and there were no sirens in place to given any last minute warnings. Indonesia is a largely Muslim country, but this event took no notice of age, sex or religion with 34 children at a Bible Camp being killed and a mosque being totally destroyed. Life has to go on for those who survived, but already there is looting as people are in desperate need for supplies and the aid convoys that are en route have to be escorted. As far as global disasters are concerned, this is a relatively small one, but for everyone personally involved the effects cannot be underestimated.

A COUNCILLOR has been expelled from a meeting after calling the mayor an ‘imbecile.’ Members of the Local Police were called in to remove Councillor Francisco D e l g a d o from a VelezMalaga Council meeting after his outburst in which he also called the mayor ‘stupid.’ Delgado, who is the local spokesman for the Partido Popular (PP) clashed with Mayor Antonio Ferrer of the PSOE party over local policing, leading Ferrer to label Delgado’s comments, “lies and hypocrisy.” The councillor responded, calling the mayor an “imbecile.” Another PP councillor, Jesus Lupiañez joined the fray, questioning PSOE representative Sergio Hijano on the choice of poster used to advertise the San Miguel festival. Hijano replied claiming Lupiañez was “politically speaking… a moron.” Councillor Delgado called on Mayor Ferrer to discipline Hijano for the remark, leading to a commotion which saw the mayor order his removal. Ferrer eventually asked officers from the Local Police to intervene, gesturing for them to put Delgado in handcuffs. The councillor instead decided to leave of his own volition, shouting, “you are stupid, you are an imbecile,” as he left. Other members of his party also left the council meeting.

TWO entrepreneurs from Nerja have created a programme allowing non-Spanish speakers to enjoy local theatre. Fernando de la Rubia, 48, and Natalia Gladysz, 33, designed an ‘app’ which uses pre-loaded scripts to translate live action in real time on a person’s phone or tablet. The inventors say their programme is in its final stages and are now raising €25,000 to finish the project before it is launched in theatres. They explain the app can be used by non-native

speakers to watch theatre in Spanish or by the disabled to follow the action. De La Rubia said, “our mobile application is able to use a previously prepared translation of a script, synchronised in real time with the work performed on stage,” offering either audio translation through headphones or on screen subtitles. The inventors explain they are now raising funds through www.languagecarri er.es to roll out the app nationally, adding it is also ‘exportable’ internationally.

Raining cats and dogs A SURPRISE downpour hit Nerja and other parts of the Axarquia, leaving rivers of water running through the streets. In just under a quarter of an hour 15 litres of water fell per square metre in Nerja centre, leaving some shops and garages flooded. Some sewers also burst and Calles Almirante Ferrandis

Pintada and Carmen were left covered in water, as was the Balcon de Europa and the promenade at Burriana Beach. An outdoor area at one school, IES Sierra Almijara, was also flooded, leaving the council to step in. In nearby Competa, heavy rainfall also caused some minor rock fall on the mountain roads.

Rosa Arrabal, Nerja’s mayor, told one publication there had been no serious damage, however, while Manuel Valderrama, head of Civil Protection, said it was “fortunate,” the torrent only lasted 15 minutes. In 2007 even heavier rainfall left 200 litres of water per square metre in Nerja, causing considerable damage.

Water relief WATER reserves in Axarquia are higher than the same time last year. Current reservoir levels can guarantee water supply to Axarquia for two years following heavy rainfall in March and April this year. Malaga’s largest reservoir, La Viñuela now holds 15 cubic hectometres more water than the same time in 2017, leaving it with 345 cubic hectometres, com-

pared to 224,9 last September. At its worst early last year, Viñuela’s water levels sat at around 22 per cent with only 35 cubic hectometres remaining. Enhanced water levels mean water supply can also be guaranteed for the next three years in Malaga City and one in the western Costa del Sol. The boost has also seen the Junta de Andalucia decide to allow farmers 21 cubic hectome-

tres of water for irrigation. Until April, nine months of drought had seen Axarquia’s farmers forced to dramatically reduce the amount of water they gave their crops. The problem also saw water company Emasa channelling 10,000 cubic metres of drinking water a day to the La Vinuela reservoir in the hope of slowing the rate at which water levels decreased.

€2.7m project almost complete WORKS to a new National Police station in Torre del Mar are almost finished. The building could now open within a month after the project entered its final phase, leaving it on target to be completed within a planned 20 months. Work to the €2.7 million building began in March 2017 following years of complaints from police and residents their previous work space was not fit for purpose. The new office in Cuesta del Visillo will replace a commercial building. Miguel Briones from the Junta de Andalucia said the new station will help “not only 80,000 residents, but it is also important for tourists and of course the rest of the region.” The building will be located on a 6,700 square metre plot, built over three floors, providing office space, cells and parking. The station’s foundation stone was laid early last year in a ceremony attended by Minister for the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido.

VELEZ-MALAGA Council has agreed to pay more than 2,000 outstanding invoices to suppliers, totalling around €2 million. Some suppliers had been waiting more than 180 days for payment.

ALCAUCIN: Has no paediatrician. RESIDENTS of Alcaucin are petitioning after being left without a paediatrician for a month. Locals in nearby towns La Viñuela, Canillas de Aceituno and Periana have also been affected after the specialist position at the La Viñuela health centre has been left vacant. Residents say they launched

the campaign since their regular paediatrician was signed off work due to a high-risk pregnancy and is not expected to return for around eight months. Fernando Cordoba, Alcaucin’s Councillor for Health, said an offer to instead replace the specialist with a family doctor has not satisfied patients.

Councillor Cordoba was joined by Vicente Campos, mayor of Canillas de Aceituno, in claiming his council will also consider further action if the situation is not resolved. A representative from the Axarquia Health Area insisted, “paediatric care has been guaranteed by a family doctor.”

1,600 homes abandoned VELEZ-MALAGA Council has abandoned a project to build more than 1,000 homes near Playa Fenicia. The plans, which were developed more than 10 years ago, were shelved after it was discovered the area could contain important Phoenician artefacts. An information centre is instead expected to be built in its place.

The move has faced strong criticism from opposing Partido Popular (PP) members, however, who say the plans will deny affordable housing to families currently living in ‘slums.’ The project was initially designed in 2007 by former mayor of Velez-Malaga, Antonio Souviron, and had the

backing of 80 local home owners. At the time, the architect in charge of the project, Angel Asenjo, said the initiative would prioritise, “cultural and environmental values, and also include a low-density and high-quality urban development,” with a, “density of 12 homes per hectare in 4.5 million square metres.”

AXARQUIA ANIMAL RESCUE (AAR) is urgently looking for fosterers to help their programme of rehousing abused and abandoned animals. While the process may initially seem a little daunting, one first-time fosterer, Marcie Clarke, is explaining why she got involved and encouraging others to do the same. Marcie said she first became attracted to the idea of temporarily housing dogs as she has three teenage sons and is “forever looking for ways to encourage them away from screens.” She adds the love she had for her own dog also influenced her decision, explaining she wanted to, “pay some forward after someone else had found it

ANOTHER 660 African migrants were rescued off the Spanish coast over last weekend. Reports claim that, on Saturday alone, 342 migrants were rescued from a total of seven boats which originally departed from Africa’s northern coast. On Sunday, 318 migrants were picked up, including one

small boat containing 12 men. This has been a particularly busy year for Spain’s coastguard with the Salvamento Maritimo reporting record numbers of incoming migrants on a regular basis. The estimated total of migrants which have arrived to Spai n i n 2018 cur r ent l y stands at 35,653 according to the International Organi-

sation for Migration. The number of migrants which have entered European nations, including Spain, via the Mediterranean Sea this year is estimated to be around 81,207. The number of people who have drowned trying to make the crossing is unknown, but is thought to be in the hundreds.

BANKINTER has signed an agreement with Smart Holdco, of Apollo Global Management, to acquire the banking operations of EVO Banco in Spain and its consumer credit affiliate in Ireland, Avantcard. The deal does not include the purchase of EVO Finance, the group’s financial arm in Spain, and it is still pending approval from official bodies and regulators. Overall, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has remained at €1.11 over the previous fortnight. The pairing rose to €1.12, but lost this on a fresh Brexit scare. The situation has been better in the US, with the GBP/USD exchange rate rising from $1.29 to $1.31; as with the GBP/EUR rate, the pound hit a temporary high of $1.32. What’s been happening? Brexit has been in the spotlight over the past couple of weeks, with optimism and pessimism about the UK’s exit from the EU causing pound gains and losses against the euro and US dollar.

GBP/USD: The exchange rate was able to recover some ground across the pond. Hopes (and the pound) initially rose when EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier suggested concluding Brexit talks by November. The gloss came off and the pound fell after an EU summit in Salzburg, however, as Theresa May’s ‘Chequers plan’ for Brexit was rejected by EU leaders. Politicians are out of touch LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT A RECENT news item on TV showed Mrs May being driven home to ‘rest up’ before the Conservative conference. Her cavalcade of three or four cars was drawing into a quiet leafy lane, which appeared to be somewhere in the English countryside. Leap’s curiosity was tweaked, so I decided to do a little research. Well I can now reveal (all in the public domain of course) that our illustrious leader lives in the village of Sonning, which is situated at the western end of her Maidenhead constituency. This village is described as the ‘most fairy like little nook on the whole river.’ Well doesn’t that all sound quite lovely? There’s more. Mrs May’s neighbours include George Clooney and family. Uri Geller and millionaire Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. (Who, in the early 60’s I used to book for 30 bob a night!... I digress) It gets better. Mrs May, is apparently a regular visitor to her local butcher and ‘loves to visit some of the other small shops in the village.’ She also likes taking part in ‘community picnics.’ All so wonderfully English. Recently she even took part in, and I quote, ‘a genteel little demo’ against

I wonder if Mrs May’s liberal attitudes toward the ever-rising immigrant population would be so enthusiastic if she found her delightful ‘genteel little village’ had suddenly turned into an area, so diverse in its culture, she felt like a stranger in her own country? No, I don’t actually want to go down the immigration path in this piece, but

rather more to demonstrate just how far removed most politicians are from the realities of real life. In their cosseted existence, they are alarmingly out of touch with the pressure and responsibility they have instigated on the local populace with their ’diversity,’ integration stipulations and policies. The only people from diverse cultures most politicians ever come in contact with, are those of the elite and educated variety. Those who emanate from good backgrounds, or higher educa-

tion. Their long-suffering constituents are the ones who have to try and integrate with the millions who don’t hail from such privileged backgrounds. Large numbers have come straight from the streets of lawless and chaotic societies, where mere survival is considered a victory, and who would not have the wherewithal to integrate even if they wanted to. It is simply not fair to expect the British public to accept all these different cultures and be threatened with legal prosecution or even imprisonment merely for voicing their own democratic opinions. This approach is akin to a dictatorship. And don’t think the Labour government would be any better. Given half a chance, the political policies of the left would have the Palestinian flag flying above the Houses of Westminster. Politicians need to lever themselves away from their gentlemen clubs, community picnics and ‘fairy little nooks on the river’ and get down to where the problems really are. Or have we got to wait until the message is only finally rammed home when Teresa May’s ‘quaint little village butchers’ shop’ only serves Halal? Keep the faith Love Leapy. leapylee2002@gmail.com

ASK any gathering of geeks about the right way to charge a phone and you could be in for a long haul. Best to pack a flask. Where a Nokia 3310 might run for a week, these days we’re lucky to get a full day from our smartphones, and LBA is the new syndrome on the block: Low Battery Anxiety. A recent survey says nine out of 10 people suffer from LBA. The rest of us just get on with our lives. Battery specialists do at least agree on a few points. One is that modern batteries no longer suffer the dreaded ‘memory effect’ which plagued our devices some time ago. Charging them partially is fine. Where we used to empty our batteries then fully recharge, today’s rule is different: charge a little, a lot. If you can be bothered. Better to keep pumping a little power into them frequently throughout the day, say the specialists, than longer full sessions, with 45 to 75 per cent charged as the constant target. Though your phone’s socket may then

A MODERN AFFLICTION: Low Battery Anxiety. wear out faster than its battery. If you do prefer to charge overnight, like most of us, there’s no risk of overcharging. Unlike lots of folks I know, today’s devices automatically stop eating when they’re full. We can safely ignore the fanatics who

insist that when you wake up for a pitstop in the wee small hours you should unplug your phone. Letting your battery empty to the point of death is a seriously bad thing to do, as is leaving it empty. But nor should you leave today’s battery 100

per cent charged for long. Experts do however recommend charging your phone to 100 per cent once a month or so, to ‘recalibrate’ the battery, a bit like restarting your computer to clear out any accumulated junk. Most manufacturers claim between 300 and 500 charges of useful life, and indeed Apple once claimed its batteries would only lose 20 per cent of their capacity after 1,000 charges. Yeah, right. And it’s a myth that every time you charge, whether fully or partially, knocks one charge off that 300-to500-charges-lifespan claim. Not so, say those in the know: if you charge your phone 20 per cent in a single session, that only counts as one-fifth of one complete charge. Perhaps life’s just too short for all this complication? Then just plug the damn thing in when you can, and when it finally wears out you’ve got the best excuse to buy a new toy. That’s how things work these days, after all?

Power struggle NEWER phones come with the latest breed of power supply: a fast charger. The jury’s still out on whether only fast-charging your phone is bad for it (largely because of the extra heat generated). If it was, say the enthusiasts, wouldn’t the suppliers of expensive high-end phones also put a traditional charger in the box? Should you only use a phone’s specific charger, meaning lugging a box full of the darn things when a family heads off on holiday? Nope: a charger is a charger is a charger, as long as it’s powerful enough to charge the most demanding phone. Today’s devices will only draw as much power as they need, so pretty much any reputable charger will charge any phone if the plugs and sockets match.

FED up with reading about Brexit and all its ups and downs? (Frankly, more downs than ups lately.) Well, spare a thought for Ryanair - and all its ups and downs. This began last September with CEO Michael O’Leary’s “major boo-boo” with the pilots’ holiday schedules - and 2,000 cancelled flights. Since then, despite grudgingly recognising the unions, he’s faced even more strikes and cancellations. Passenger compo came via bouncing cheques. And then to hack us all off, yet another change to Ryanair’s carry-on bag rules! Ryanair said the policy wasn’t targeted at making money but to "improve punctuality and reduce boarding gate delays". However, research suggests Ryanair made £1.7bn from charges for add-ons like checked baggage and selected seats in the last year - i.e. almost a third of Ryanair's profits came from so-called "ancillary revenue". Ages ago, I read somewhere about the three dimensions of strategy: technological development, operational excellence and customer satisfaction. Successful

UP OR DOWN: Like ´Marmite´, Ryanair is a company you either love or loathe companies excel in one, do very well in the second and just keep their fingers crossed with the third. Goes without saying which is third in Ryanair's modus operandi! Customers are simply the ways and means to achieving profitable revenue generation. But before we criticise unduly, consider pharmaceutical companies which care little about patients' health; insurance companies which care little for customers' welfare; or fast food companies which care little for diners' tastes and preferences. Basically, Ryanair is a ‘Marmite’ airline – you either love it or loathe it. Some

hate the fact it seems to be constantly itching to “punish” passengers with extra charges, hate the fanfare on landing, and hate the whole experience. Nonetheless, others insist Ryanair is still (despite all those strikes and cancelled flights) one of the largest airlines on the planet by providing customers with exactly what they want: cheap, safe flights. Which category are you in? Not so long ago, I wrote here about airports and all the misery they involve. Seems to me that airports - and airlines – are to peace of mind and relaxation what Trump is to feminism! Can they get English television? In our community we have a long-standing problem with our communal television antenna. The Sky satellite dish on our roof is too small to receive English TV channels for the English-speaking owners. Even though our community fees include the rooftop dish, the administration will not provide for English channels. Even worse, they will not allow television technicians access to the roof to maintain the private antennas of some owners. What recourse do the English owners have? The members who vote against it cannot be charged for the installation, however, only those who vote in favour. Also, you want to make sure that your Sky’s reception is legal. Basically, it is not allowed to receive it in Spain.

MORE than 200 years after the great sea battle at Trafalgar on October 21, 1805 Nelson’s pocket watch came up for auction. This watch belonged to the great British hero, Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson, and set the pace of one of history’s greatest naval battles. Now mounted in a gilt-brass carriage clock case, this pocket watch is thought to be the timepiece carried by the Admiral during the Battle of Trafalgar. Chairman of Sotheby’s International Watch Division, Daryn Schnipper said: ‘The perfect timing of the British assault at the Battle of Trafalgar was key in the historic victory of the Royal Navy so to be able to offer for sale the watch that Nelson probably used to establish the timing for this decisive battle, is a real privilege.” The victory at Trafalgar was partly achieved through Nelson’s innovative military tactics in which precise timing played a key part. On the morning of the Battle of Trafalgar, William Beatty - the surgeon aboard Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory, observed how before the battle commenced, the Admiral called upon his lieutenants to synchronise their watches to the time on his own watch. It is therefore quite possible that the tumultuous events of that historic day unfolded to the time kept by this very watch.

TICK-TOCK CONDITION: Nelson’s encased pocket watch was recently sold at auction. Nelson possibly acquired this Emery pocket watch No 1104, or was given it by an admirer, following his triumph at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Given its extraordinary quality, it is unlikely that he would have been able to purchase such a luxurious item from his own means. One of the 19 relics returned to Nelson’s mistress, Emma, Lady Hamilton, following his

death, the watch was inherited by the Admiral’s brother, William, and subsequently passed to his sole surviving child, Charlotte. Charlotte arranged for the watch to be mounted in its current form as a carriage clock, presumably so it could be better admired and treasured as her most precious possession.

This watch is one of a handful of Nelson’s possessions known to have survived and still in private hands. No 1104, is of the smaller size used by Emery for his Lever watch series. The term Lever refers to the escapement which is the part within the watch movement that allows the watch to run consistently and is one of the most important components in a precision timepiece. This watch is made to the highest standards, this is evident even today. Every part of this watch will have been finished by hand. Indeed this escapement was so difficult to make that its creator, Thomas Mudge, had little time for it and passed on its secrets to Josiah Emery as a maker who might be able to produce it. Emery created this series of watches in conjunction with his struggle to conquer the problem of Longitude. It is a testament of the importance of this series that not only was an example used by Lord Nelson, as his personal watch during a historic battle, but interestingly it has probably been used by you as well. This is because nearly every mechanical watch produced today uses a form of lever escapement.

Complicated world of creams MANY leading skin experts claim that terms used by cosmetic firms such as ‘hypoallergenic’ and ‘dermatologist-recommended’ are often just marketing tools. But when it comes to sensitive skin, they do recommend moisturisers without fragrance or allergic ingredients. A study of the 100 best-selling whole body moisturisers found that not only did prices vary by 9,400 per cent, but 95 per cent of the products claiming to be dermatologist-recommended had at least one ingredient that could cause an allergy. Of the hypoallergenic varieties, 83 per cent contained a substance on the allergen list of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG). The most common potential allergy-

MOST of us have at least once woken up with a throbbing head and dry mouth and sworn ‘I’m never drinking again.’ What seems like a good idea the night before often leads to a miserable day after. Heavy drinking can lead to inflammation of the stomach and intestines, poor-quality sleep, and the production of toxic substances that lead to vomiting, sweating and an increased heart rate. Hangovers can also hamper the ability to concentrate and affect short term loss, according to experts. And despite the majority of the adult population having endured one at some point, nobody seems to be able to provide a credible ‘hangover cure.’ Although there is evidence behind what works to relieve symptoms and what doesn’t. allergens. While lotions are the most popular moisturisers, dermatologists recommend ointments for skin which is really dry. Lotions contain water, so they apparently evaporate quickly on the skin and then don’t do anything useful. Petroleum jelly is said to the favourite, it may be greasy, but gets top marks for protecting the skin. VARIETY: It can be difficult knowing which moisturiser is more suitable than another.

Foods such as bacon, eggs and even broccoli contain an amino acid called ‘cysteine,’ which scientists claim can decrease the amount of the toxic chemical ‘acetaldehyde,’ which is produced as your body metabolises alcohol. Acetaldehyde contributes to hangover symptoms such as increased heart rate, nausea and vomiting, but there is limited research supporting the benefits of certain foods as hangover cures. However, eating protein, fat and carbohydrates before drinking has been shown to slow the absorption of alcohol. One reason we feel terrible after drinking is down to the effects that alcohol has on our sleep. Alcohol-induced sleep can be shorter and poorer quality, but the tiredness you feel can be reversed by the nation’s favourite stimulant - caffeine. Then there’s the common phrase, ‘hair of the dog.’ But experts stress drinking during a hangover is simply dangerous, as vital organs such as the liver need time to repair the damage caused by a heavy session. Government guidelines recommend that you should avoid alcohol for 48 hours after a heavy drinking session.

Even when I speak to my Spanish friends and business colleagues, Brexit seems to dominate the conversation. The main worry amongst my fellow Brits is how it might affect our pensions, travel, Euro and Sterling values, and on it goes; amongst my Spanish colleagues it seems to be whether Brexit will affect payments of invoices, continued business and whether changes in UK legislation will affect the ability of Spanish businesses and communities when it comes to payment and collection of invoices from UK customers. I wish I knew all the answers - that would certainly make me unique because all our politicians seem to be running around like headless chickens with no real answers or ideas as to what the future holds for the UK and those UK citizens living outside the UK and those EU citizens living within the UK. Well what a turn of events as I write this article... the UK Labour Party conference in Liverpool has voted by 86 per cent to suggest that another referendum to decide on Brexit is wanted, although Mr Corbin would prefer a General Election. I know that many argue that another

What I do know is that whatever happens there will be no detrimental effect

It shouldn’t be allowed Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I JUST spent a very pleasant weekend in Mallorca with a bunch of nutters, as Del Trotter would put it, for a jolly boys outing. I knew it was going to be fun as soon as I met Lilian and Roland at the airport who were off on a cruise to celebrate 60 years of being married. My flight was good; the villa that we had booked was great and the weather fine. So I know what you are thinking - what made me grumpy? Well I’m glad you asked. The answer is football. Football made me grumpy for two reasons. The first was that our lads had entered a five-a- side tourney and, to begin with, they were not taking it as seriously as maybe they should have. Everyone else turned up in their proper kit. We had Primark t-shirts; the boys were all in different makes of shorts with different coloured socks. You get the idea. We reckoned we would get knocked out in the first round, but we didn’t. And we also got through the second round. Now it was turning out to be a bit of a Rocky moment. The underdogs were beating everyone. By now we were buzzing having reached the se-

mi-finals. We only had to beat the Local Police team to get into the finals. We looked over to where they were sitting and saw that 15 minutes before the match they were all sitting down tucking into a lunch of pasta, burgers, wine, beer etc. We thought this was going to be a doddle. As our team was going onto the pitch the police team were still eating their lunch and had put four new players on the pitch that hadn’t even played in the earlier matches. Our ‘manager’ asked one of the organisers if this was allowed and was told that, because of shift changes they allowed it. So basically we were cheated, by the police, out of the finals. The ringers they put in the team were fresh and our boys were cream crackered. Anyway if that’s how you have to win, good luck to you. I don’t actually mean that - it shouldn’t be allowed, full stop. The second football thing that made me grumpy was the West Ham v Chelsea game. How come, in their combined starting line-up, they manged to field only one home grown British player between the two teams? We have to nurture our kids more and stop ruining the game by buying in these spoilt brats. In a squad of 25 only eight have to be home grown players. THE Torre del Mar Beer Festival (Oktoberfest) has been extended to two days this year and will be held in the Avenida Toré Toré on Friday October 12 and Saturday October 13. It is not just about drinking but as the previous events have been so successful it was considered appropriate to add the extra day which will also allow for additional entertainment to be presented. This year, the lead singer of Danza Invisible, Javier Ojeda, who accompanied the councillor of Tourism in the presentation, heads the bill. Other acts include Ñ-Clan, Señor Mirinda, Free Soul Band, tributes to Estopa and Mecano who will perform in the company of Radio 80. There will be a selection of ambient music, flamenco groups, modern dances, salsa, magic, DJs and much more. The event is open from noon until 9pm each day.

Indian Breaded Chicken with a Dhansak Curry Sauce Serves 4 2 teaspoons poppy seeds 2 teaspoons turmeric 2 teaspoons cumin seeds 2 eggs beaten 250 ml breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons cooking oil 2 large chicken breast halves without skin and each one then halved For the Sauce 2 tablespoons cooking oil, sunflower is ideal 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 6 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped 1 tablespoon curry powder or paste 1 large can of peeled tomatoes 1 piece ginger root (optional), grated 1 or more red or green chillis (optional), seeded and chopped 2 chicken stock cubes, crumbled 1 jar lentils, drained 1 bunch cilantro, finely chopped juice of one lemon

Indian breaded chicken with a dhansak sauce

CURRY: With onion fried rice. 2 teaspoons garam masala 1. Place spices in a shallow bowl and mix together, beat the eggs in another bowl and place breadcrumbs in a third. 2. Pour oil into an oven-proof dish/tin and pre-heat oven to 200 Celsius (fan) 220 Celsius (conventional). 3. Dredge the chicken in the spice mix to coat fully, then dredge in the beaten egg, tip any remaining spice mix into the dish containing the breadcrumbs and coat the chicken with the mix. 4. Coat the crumbed chicken in the oil and place in the oven and cook for about 20-30 minutes depending upon the size of the breast portions. Ensure they are cooked through by tapping with a spoon until a resonant sound is obtained. 5. While cooking make the sauce. 6. Fry the onion and garlic until transparent and add the curry powder/paste until aroma released continually stirring.

7. Add the tomatoes, stock cubes, ginger and chillis and stir until simmering. 8. Drain the lentils, place in a sieve and rinse under cold running water until the water is clear and add to the sauce. 9. Add the cilantro, lemon juice and garam masala, give one final stir 10. Place the breaded chicken on plates with the sauce either poured over the chicken or to one side. Serve with: Easy Indian Onion ‘Fried’ Rice Serves 4 1 small onion, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons cooking oil 350 ml long-grain white rice, rinsed and drained 700 ml water 1 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon salt 1. Put all the ingredients in a microwaveable container. 2. Thoroughly stir and seal as well as possible. 3. Place in a microwave oven and cook on full power for 12 minutes. 4. Remove from microwave and let it stand for about three minutes. 5. Serve.

AS part of the celebrations in Salobreña last week following the procession of the Virgen del Rosario, there was a cavalcade of no less than 46 floats which passed through the town. Of those, 19 were registered in Category A which meant they were of high enough standard to be entered into a competition to decide the best float. The quality of the work on these floats was exceptionally high, but the first prize was eventually awarded to the Aguas Verdes restaurant for their creation Los patios del Realejo, second prize went to Los Cortieros and the third

prize to the Association of Costa Tropical Women. The judges considered all three and indeed all of the entries to be very colourful and of a high standard reflecting their roots in Andalucia.

CCCA off to Ronda HE CCCA has its monthly classic car run on Saturday and they’re off for an away weekend of fun and frivolity. Not to mention enjoying some amazing, beautiful scenery and a drive that will be really memorable. The run will start on Saturday morning from the Posada de Ronda hotel which is about seven kilometres west of Ronda on the Sevilla road. Rooms are booked for many members on the Friday night, although there are still some available if wanted. The run is being organised by CCCA member Richard Masters, assisted by his wife, Nicky, who will be entertaining many members with a night out in Ronda on the Friday. Let’s hope they make it back in time for the 11am Saturday start! The route will take in some stunning scenery and great driving roads around the areas of

Grazalama and the lakes around Zahara. The event will finish up with a good lunch at the Posada de Ronda afterwards. We will have more about the event itself in the next issue. Thinking of buying a classic? They say that, as spring comes on, a young man’s fancy turns to, well, that obviously, but also to sports cars. Well, I can assure you that at any time of year, most older men will also be turning their attentions to acquiring a fun vehicle, maybe a sports car or, especially when retired and living ‘the life’ on the Costa del Sol, quite possibly a classic car. Many people have joined the CCC of A because of the amazing social life that spins off from Club activities as well as the monthly dinners, parties and the many runs the club organises which allows people to see some beautiful parts of Spain generally and Andalucia

in particular. Often these are people that have not previously had an interest in cars specifically, but like the idea of classic car ownership for the reasons stated. But how does one go about getting such a classic car and what does it cost? In my experience, many retired people living here look back on their lives and decide to buy cars that they may have lusted after, but couldn’t afford, when they were younger. The people, that is, not the cars, although, as I write, I think this applies to both! With that in mind, how does one acquire that much loved vehicle? Stating the obvious, the local classifieds is a place to start but that can ‘end in tears’ sometimes. The golden rule when buying from classifieds is to have a professional inspection. The websites of the local classic car clubs can often produce good results, especially if cars are being sold from

deceased estates or by some giving up ‘the good life’ to return to their home country. Although it may involve a few visits back to Blighty, classic car auctions are plentiful and, generally, run by professional and reputable bodies. They are usually well publicised in advance giving potential buyers plenty of time to ‘study form.’ Cars can be viewed via the auction catalogue ‘online’ and most auctioneers will provide a technical inspection and report if asked. That way, a visit to the auction itself may not be necessary. One simply registers to bid a day or so beforehand and then a telephone bid can be arranged. The golden rule here - set a limit you are willing to pay and DO NOT go any higher! I know, I’ve been carried away myself before now when buying at a classic car auction. I once went to Baron’s auction in Surrey to buy a £3,000 Tri-

umph GT6 and came home, not only with the little Triumph, but also a £40,000 Dodge Viper V10 that was ‘car of the show’ and sat on a plinth in the auction room as I waited for the Triumph. It was like an ‘out of body’ experience as I watched my hand go up bidding for a car I’d not even looked at! Luckily for me it worked out well in the end! Buying classics this way is a good idea and usually a sound investment. Until around mid2015 there was a lot of heavy investment in classic cars from ‘the big money’ which was driving up prices at an alarming rate. That seems to have subdued now and, in some cases, there has been an ‘adjustment’ of values which is no bad thing. Classics will continue to do well and be a sound investment, but if one has just one classic, has plenty of fun and enjoyment, the car probably won’t make any fortunes short term but it should certainly at
