ALGARROBO: Killing shocks sleepy town.
Guard murder charge POLICE in Algarrobo have held a reconstruction after a man was brutally murdered. A 47-year-old man is now awaiting trial after a 63-yearold security guard, Antonio Camacho Reina ‘El Manco,’ was allegedly murdered in the early hours of Saturday morning. The Algarrobo resident had been working as a municipal security guard in the area’s Las Escalerillas park when a witness says he was attacked, thrown to the ground and kicked repeatedly. Police say the victim sustained multiple serious injuries to the back of his neck and head. A source explained officers initially believed the man had been attacked by
several aggressors due to the force and number of his injuries. A witness later confirmed only one man had carried out the attack, punching and kicking the victim repeatedly while on the ground before jumping on his head. Within 48 hours of the crime, police used witness accounts to arrest a local man, named only as JJ, on suspicion of murder. The alleged attacker is currently being held on remand awaiting a first hearing and was released briefly to take part in a crime re-enactment in Algarrobo. Police explained they originally believed the alleged murderer attacked his victim while trying to steal electri-
cal equipment from the park. Officers say they discounted this theory after discovering the two men had quarrelled before and that the victim had begun a relationship with the accused’s ex-partner. Locals have reacted with shock while the town’s mayor, Alberto Perez, postponed an annual festival and declared two days of mourning during which flags flew at half-mast over public buildings. One resident described Antonio Camacho Reina as: “A good person, who had no problems with anyone, and who had bad luck.” The accused is said to be a well-known Algarrobo resident who lived in the town with his older brother. The man reportedly suffered from
mental health problems and police say they found several marihuana plants in his home following a search at his property.

Fire threat A FIRE in a Nerja park has alarmed residents. Locals are now calling on authorities to ramp up security measures after it was revealed the fire in ParqueVerano Azul could have been started intentionally. The blaze, which was the second of its kind in two years, destroyed a cypress tree as well as some nearby plants. No people were injured and no further damage was caused after locals moved their parked cars away from the fire until firefighters were able to extinguish it. Firemen from the Provincial Consortium worked with members of the Local Police to tackle
the flames, preventing it spreading. Locals told one publication of their ‘discomfort,’ at the fire, which they believed could have been caused by a group of young men seen ‘smoking and drinking,’ in the park shortly before the blaze. The park is currently fitted with a security fence but is awaiting a gate and continues to attract vandalism at night according to locals. The most recent fire was the second of its kind in two years after a small fire started in September 2016 during Nerja’s first Chanquete World Festival, very close to a replica of a boat used in a 1980’s Spanish programme.

Recognition push Spain floats EU Palestine acceptance By Joe Gerrard THE Spanish Foreign Minister has said his country could put forward a motion in the European Parliament that would commit the European Union (EU) to recognise an independent Palestine. Josep Borrell added the Spanish government would still consider recognising the Middle Eastern territory if the bloc refused to back the proposal. It comes as left-wing parties in Spain, some of which back the Partido Socialista (PSOE) minority government, have reportedly begun pressuring senior officials to support full Palestinian statehood. Opponents are concerned Israel could recognise an independent Cataluña in retaliation if Spain goes ahead with the plan. Borrell said he planned to
launch an “intensive” consultation process with his opposite numbers in EU member states with the view to securing a timetable for the initiative. “The issue is on the table. It is a momentous decision, the consequences and effects of which must be studied. These are being
analysed,” the minister said. The EU currently officially backs a two state solution to the Palestinian question which would see an independent Palestine co-exist alongside Israel. Borrell’s comments were welcomed by Palestinian authorities who said the move would help bring peace to the territory. “The determination of Spain to recognise the Palestinian state and statements from their Foreign Minister represent direct steps towards peace, the end of Israeli occupation and stability in the Middle East,” the authority said. Ahmed Abulgueit, Secretary General of the Arab League, said Spain should recognise Palestinian statehood even if the EU does not back the move. Angel Mas, the head of the Spain-based pro-Israeli Action and Communication on the Mid-
dle East (ACOM), said there was a “real possibility” Tel Aviv may recognise Cataluña’s independence in response. Emmanuel Nahshon, Israel’s Foreign Minister, said he did not comment on “speculation” when asked about the proposal. Palestine is recognised by 136 United Nations member states but many such as Spain, Britain and the United States do not.
Palestinian statehood is seen as a sensitive issue as much of the territory it claims is now administered and settled by Israel. The UN has branded Israel’s presence an “occupation” which they dispute.

€500,000 health boost TORROX Council has agreed to invest half a million Euros in expanding El Morche’s health centre. The works will almost double the centre’s current size, adding a further 250 square metres of space, while the Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry of Health will provide additional staff. Mayor, Oscar Medina, said: “The result will be a totally new building after acquiring the premises and another obtained by
the council on a long-term lease.” He added: “The first works will be undertaken in the new section and then we will remodel the current office,” explaining the changes would, “fulfil demand for something as important as health care, which councils should not spare any expense on.” The mayor, whose party the Partido Popular (PP) governs in minority, criticised opposing politicians for ‘hindering’ the works.

School concerns PARENTS in Rincon de la Victoria are pulling their children out of school over claims their classrooms are unsafe. Only half of students at the Torre de Benagalbon Institute turned up to class for five days after parents complained of the ‘lack of safety and hygiene measures, as well as discomfort from noise, heat and dust.’ The Junta de Andalucia has insisted the prefabricated classrooms are ‘perfectly safe,’ and comply with the “‘norms of se-

PM’s Canada trip SPAIN’S Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez travelled to Canada last weekend for meetings with his counterpart Justin Trudeau who said his country backed a ‘united’ Spain when asked about Catalan independence. Sanchez’s visit was the first time a Spanish Prime Minister had visited Canada since 2002. The two leaders inspected a guard of honour, held a series of meetings and spoke to the press and public. Trudeau said during a joint press conference he had confidence in Spain’s government and people being able to find a solution to the ongoing drive for Cataluña’s secession. He was responding to a question on whether Catalans should be able to vote in a legal independence referendum as people in Quebec had done in 1980 and 1995. “Obviously I recognise this is a delicate internal matter and I have confidence in the Spanish people and all different governments to move forward with a way that is respectful of freedom of expression and of the values of human rights, the rule of law and the Spanish constitution,” Trudeau said. Sanchez said on Twitter the Spanish and Canadian governments both shared progressive
goals on human rights and climate change. “We will design ways for our countries to work more closely together to build economies that work for everyone and advance gender equality,” he said. The two leaders held a series of talks in Montreal. They approved a ‘Canada-Spain Co-operation Agenda’ which laid out plans to work together on a host of issues to achieve ‘a safer, more peaceful world.’ Both leaders also took part in Canada 2020’s Global Progress summit where they discussed security, diplomacy and human rights among other issues. Trudeau also presented Sanchez with a picture of former Spanish Prime Minister Calvo Sotelo hosting his counterpart, Trudeau’s father Pierre, in Spain in 1982. Sanchez said receiving the framed photograph was an “emotional moment.” Trudeau’s comments on Cataluña follow Quebec parties’ unanimous passage of a motion which condemned what they claimed was Spain’s ‘authoritarian’ approach to last October’s independence referendum. Some in Quebec argue the French-speaking Canadian province should also become independent.

NERJA Town Hall has closed off 300 metres of beach following a sewage spill. Politicians took the decision after reports of raw sewage on Burriana Beach. Workers are now repairing a pipe burst by falling rocks from the nearby cliffs in an attempt to stem the leack. The town’s mayor, Rosa Arrabal, said the town hall, “regrets the inconvenience,” and that the authorities, “are working to solve the situation.” She added there had been problems with that area of pipework for some years and the council had tried, “to solve it with a slope stabilisation project with an investment of €85,000, but the Partido Popular (PP) and Ciudadanos rejected it.” Mayor Arrabal said the affected stretch of beach had been closed “as a precautionary measure,” at the request of the Delegation for Health, Local Police and Municipal Operative Services. Works to complete Nerja’s first sewage treatment plant are near completion almost two years after their initial deadline and are due for testing in early 2019. The project, which began again in February following a 10-month break, will see a further collection point installed in the area surrounding Burriana Beach which will take wastewater to a treatment plant. Isolux-Corsan-Corviam, the company undertaking the project, will begin the works once specialised machinery has been moved to

Trying to be helpful WHILST most people understand that the flood of economic migrants into Europe is unsustainable in the long run, it would be a very hard hearted person who didn’t offer a hand to a drowning human being. This effectively is what is happening as the last privately managed rescue ship in the Mediterranean, the Aquarius (which is run by two charities Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and SOS Mediterranée) has had its Panama maritime flag removed and once it returns to port, it will be unable to leave again unless it obtains a new flag. The charities blame the Italian government for putting pressure upon Panama to remove the flag and although the Italians deny this, influential Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, has described the aid boats as a ‘taxi service’ for migrants. It is a very difficult situation as many people find it hard to understand how these migrants are able to obtain the thousands of dollars needed to pay people smugglers to take them to Europe and also how they cannot follow the news to learn about the dangers that they are likely to face. Much needs to be done to resolve problems at home but with Syria and Yemen still at war and with Eritrea only recently making life slightly easier for their young men and women, the apparently never ending number of illegal migrants will just carry on. Spain is now trying to help but there are fears that if it becomes too welcoming then the trickle will become a flood and unemployment which is bad enough still will rocket again.

weather broke an underwater sewage pipe off Nerja’s coast, causing wastewater to pour out into the sea. The pipeline was repaired last March in a €100,000 project after a leak caused a ‘geyser’ of sewage to form off the town’s popular beaches. Witnesses said the raw sewage was visible from popular attraction the Balcon de Europa. Almost half the municipality’s sewage is pumped through the underwater pipeline untreated before it is let out to see at around 1,000 metres offshore. The Council says this distance is far enough for the current to take the waste out to sea.

SHINE ON: Participants got medals for taking part. NICKI BURGESS, general manager of the EWN Media Group, has raised more than €1,067 for Cancer Research UK after completing an almost 20-kilometre night walk around central London. Nicki took part in the charity’s Shine Night Walk along with her daughter Jade and friends Amy Fuller and Lisa and Josie Milbank. Their team raised more than €1,804 for the charity online as well as hundreds more in cash. Nicki’s personal target was around €560. Nicki said she decided to take part in memory of her mum June who died of bowel cancer. “Although it was raining on the night the atmosphere there was amazing. It was harder than I thought it would be, but there was an amazing team spirit among all those who took part,” she said. She added that around 20,000 walkers had taken part in the
event. The walk began at the city’s Southwalk Park and Nicki’s team set out at 10.15pm. It saw her team and those involved take in sites including The Shard, Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. Nicki’s team finished the route at around 3.50am. She said Londoners treated her, her team and all the other walkers very well. “There were people on hand to collect rubbish and to hand out protein bars and drinks to us,” she said. Nicki added everyone taking part had shown enthusiasm and dedication while taking part. “I saw one woman there who clearly had cancer and I thought that was so inspirational. Everyone had glowing lights and tiaras on, it made for a really great atmosphere,” she said. Nicki said she would advise anyone who wanted to undertake the walk to prepare and to train beforehand. She added she had been

Bank buy back SANTANDER BANK is exploring a bid for its own headquarters in Spain, after it sold the building in 2008 for €1.9 billion in a 40-year sale-to-leaseback deal. The bid would potentially place the bank in direct competition with other funds including US investors Blackstone and Centerbridge, which are considering a €3 billion offer. The sprawling complex located in Boadilla del Monte outside of Madrid, was sold to Marme Inversiones and leased back for around €50 million a year by the lender.

THE Bank of Spain has warned that a rapid increase in consumer credit, which has risen 47 per cent since 2014, has made the economy more vulnerable in the event of another financial crisis. In a recent report, the Bank of Spain states that the absence of loan guarantees, except in car purchases, has increased the fragility of the sector. To minimise these risks it urges both banks and the public to ensure that credit is based on ‘prudent expectations’ about what customers can realistically repay.

Oil slip MIGRATION MONEY: The funds will be vital for Morocco’s development. THE EU has allocated €234 million of aid to Morocco to boost efforts to stem illegal migration to the continent. Its Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn signed agreements covering funding with Morocco’s Finance Minister Mohamed Benchaaboun, with Hahn confirming Europe’s commitment to Morocco’s national development. Some €150 million of the aid is destined for the ‘Competitiveness and Green Growth’ programme,
aimed at strengthening self-employed entrepreneurs. It will also boost first-time exporters, the business climate and recycling. The rest of the funds will go towards government social protection initiatives, aiming to reduce social disparities by increasing access to basic services. Morocco has an unemployment rate of over 9 per cent, but this rises to nearly 30 per cent for young people, resulting in many looking to escape through migration to Europe.
THE Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has estimated that oil will account for 28 per cent of global energy consumption in 2040, (down from 31 per cent last year), due to the boom in natural gas and renewable energy.
Grey pay THOUSANDS of Spanish pensioners have protested in Madrid to demand an increase in payouts, complaining that the former government’s 0.25 per cent rise does not keep up with inflation.
Spain trains Ghana businesses THE Spanish government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ghana to train 2000 young entrepreneurs to boost the ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ programme. The initiative will be undertaken by the Spanish chamber of commerce under the auspices of the Institute for the Creation and Development of Enterprise (INCYDE) foundation. It will provide training and consultancy services as
well as assist the development and promotion of entrepreneurship to indigenous Ghanaian businesses, helping them foster investment and job creation. Ghana’s Minister of Business Development, Dr Mohammed Awal has explained that the 2,000 beneficiaries would be the first batch of many to be provided with the necessary skills capable of producing first class international products and the adoption of modern business techniques within the industry.

Youngsters of today have no pride LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I DON’T write about Brexit, at least I haven’t for a while. The reason is that I have had the whole boring barrage of brain jarring bull totally up to here. In fact, for the last month or so, I’ve had a personal competition. When I switch on the telly, I see how long it takes to hear the Brexit word uttered by some floating head or another. This morning took the experiment to new heights. The first vocal sound that came through was ‘exit. So, I guess that puts it to around minus a nanosecond before I actually became aware of the whole word. I’m also getting a mite piqued with all the vitriolic diatribes being directed at those who voted to leave. The main offenders of these often-unacceptable condemnations are generally the younger generation. There are of course a number of reasons for this, the main one being that they are so cosseted and ‘nannied’ these days that most of them are utterly petrified of being cut loose from the ‘mothers’ of Brussels apron strings! Heaven forbid they should have to actually look up from their mobiles, use their initiative and take a few risks in the big wide world,
TIN MAN: Youth have no knowledge of UK’s past. thereby actually doing something for themselves and their country. Which brings me to the second reason for their oft nasty reactions. There is no sense of pride or patriotism in the youngsters of today. The schools are not teaching them our long and often glorious history, or the sacrifices that so many made for them to be lucky enough to live in a society that allows
them such freedom and democracy. Indeed, many have parents or ancestors that hail from countries that they consider were pillaged and laid to waste by the marauding Brits of yore. However much we try to atone, some will never forgive us, and many will not be happy till everything that is British is consigned to past history and swept under the carpet of a new
faceless super state. Another reason to vote remain! There is an ad on telly at present. The ad is for an insurance company. A young man of plainly ethnic origin, but with a cockney accent and presumably British, is trying to explain something that caused him to have an accident in his car. ‘A tin man in a dress or a Kaftan ran across the road, chasing a horse that was also wearing some kind of dress,’ he informs the rep. They then show what he had actually seen. If this young man had been taught the history of the country he lives in, he would have known immediately that this was a Knight in armour and his horse, probably originating from some jousting competition in the vicinity. The disquieting point here is that the company who made the ad used this example knowing full well that the majority of viewers would probably have been just as lost for an explanation as the young man in question. Ah well... So, Justin Bieber doesn’t want a prenup with his new bride to be, because he considers ‘marriage is forever.’ Bieber’s fortune is estimated at some 280 million. Fight or flight mode? Terence Kennedy considers the plane truth: to switch off in-flight or not
COULD you bring down a plane by not switching your phone to Flight Mode? More than a third of travellers now keep their phones on. So perhaps we should indeed pay more attention to that safety demonstration? Well here’s the horse’s-mouth reality, quoted by a commercial pilot the other month: 99.99 per cent of the time it really doesn’t matter, so go right ahead and second-guess the pilot by playing Infinite Flight Simulator. It’s that other .01 per cent that matters. First the myths. No, phones won’t interfere with the navigation system and send you plunging to your doom playing Doom. In fact they won’t interfere with any of the plane’s electronic systems - except perhaps the radio. Does it matter? Probably not, if you were the only one aboard sneaking a last-minute call during take-off. At worst you’ll annoy the pilot or trafficcontroller with a brief ‘bzzzt-bzzztbzzzt-bzzt-bzzt’ on-speaker while communicating with each other. But active phones constantly seek cell towers and bzzzt as they do so.
FLIGHT CLUB: Mobiles may matter. Now multiplied by scores of non-compliers per flight. There have indeed been at least two serious incidents where mobile phones could have been implicated: the crash of a Crossair plane in Switzerland in 2000, when spurious transmissions
confused the autopilot, and a fatal crash in New Zealand in 2003. However the author of the tell-all Cockpit Confidential insists that “To date there are no proven cases of a phone adversely affecting the outcome of a flight.” Then he spoils it all by
adding: “But you never know.” Far more dangerous on a flight, apparently, is the risk of our electronic toys hurtling through the air like unguided missiles during turbulence or other ‘unsettled conditions’ (as I heard one cool and calm pilot announce it while we brushed up on our ‘Hail Marys’ and assumed the position). The industry has largely given up on that one and lets us keep our smaller gadgets clutched and running at all times, no doubt on the logical assumption that you’re more likely to survive a flying iPhone than a ThinkPad. Ultimately, consider this hidden possibility to delight conspiracy theorists everywhere: using mobiles in-flight is absolutely safe, but the airlines will never admit it. Why? The minute it can be proved beyond reasonable doubt that phones are safe, a percentage of flyers will demand the right to use them, pitting one angry group of travellers against another, with carriers stuck in the middle, says our Cockpit Confidential man. The aircraft cabin is a last refuge of relative silence. Let’s keep it that way.
Laptop dance EVER wondered why you have to unpack a laptop for airport security, but not a tablet? The official answer is that a laptop is less dense and could hide dangerous stuff. Technology wasn’t the answer to ultimate passenger security some years back when, after an investment of millions in fancy new peoplescanners, airports quickly retired them in droves. They were doing their job too well. The scanners showed passengers naked, to the outrage of privacy campaigners. Every nip and tuck was there for the delectation of the staff, Playboy on the hoof for an eight-hour shift, said its detractors. The death-knell sounded in 2013 with the arrest of one particularly diligent security man. Police found the juciest of the month’s x-rays on his wall at home.

What’s more, selling it there could get you a fine of up to $100,000. • Benylin cough syrup isn’t permitted through customs in Zambia. • Enjoy a tipple while relaxing on holiday? Be extra careful if travelling to the US.

for a bus in California, Virginia and many other popular holiday spots. • Medication we innocently purchase over the counter at home is against stringent antistimulant laws in Japan, including decongestants Sudafed and Vicks. Time’s a great healer Take care!
Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man THEY say that time is a great healer which would explain why, in England, they make you wait months before you can get to see a specialist. My experiences here are much better generally so I was a little put out that after waiting over an hour past my appointment time to see my diabetic doctor... I have the diabetes, not her… she’s rushing me. I had loads of blood test results to go through, some scans done, and wanted to relook at my meds, sorting out my insulin and other stuff. After about five minutes she starts giving me the hurry up treatment because she’s running late. What I don’t get is why rush me? Why not the people that made her late in the first place? Someone has to explain to me how that works. So after five minutes I’m sent on my way still with loads of unanswered questions and a general feeling of bewilderment. I’ll get another crack at it in six months’ time - hopefully with more than the five-minute time allowance.
I’ve noticed a new menace on the roads - well actually the pavements. People on mini motorised two wheelers. They look like a large scooter but with an engine and a saddle on it. They are being hired out by loads of companies that usually hire out normal bicycles. Now, I have no objections to businesses renting them out, but I do wish some of their customers would be a bit more responsible. Some of them whizz along, really fast, and nearly all the riders wear a crash helmet. I’ve seen them mostly along the paseo when I’m walking the dog. They would not have a hope in hell of stopping if a child or a dog got in front of them. They ride on the pavement because they are scared to drive them on the road. What nonsense! Because they aren’t confident enough to ride them on the road, they put everyone in danger that is walking along the pavement. This simply should not be allowed. If you can’t or won’t ride them in the road, then the police should nick these people. And as with all these things it’s not the bike that’s the problem - it’s the people using them! HOT on the heels of World Health Organisation reports that the UK’s the third fattest nation in Europe - fuelled by a diet of booze - we now have the head of Public Health England instructing middle-aged drinkers to aim at two booze-free days a week. Phew, whatever next! Some see this as an example of the Nanny State at its most patronising and absurd. But I don’t agree. The government spends a lot of taxpayers’ mon e y f o r m u l a t i n g th is g u id a n ce which is aimed at our very best interests. Of that I am in no doubt. That’s why I take every pronouncement most seriously and follow every bit of advice meticulously. Which I’m happy now to pass on to you... A l wa y s e n su r e y o u ea t s ix , o r may b e se v e n . . . o r i s it eig h t. . . n o wait... five pieces of fruit and vegetables e a c h d a y. Do n ’t s mo k e , ev er. Never use a ladder or other ‘dangerous’ piece of equipment unless you’re accompanied by two others, one to hold it, the other to supervise.

Be extremely careful when making ‘jokes.’ In all probability you will offend someone, and this could be dangerous both for you and society at large. If in doubt, seek advice from the government-sponsored website ‘It’s healthy to laugh, but not at others.’
Finally and back to the real world, it’s always wise, when idiotic advice like this latest example crops up, to remember the old joke about the man who asked his GP: “If I never drink, never smoke, remain on a diet and abstain from sex, will I live to be 100?” GP: “No, but it’ll feel like it.” It was only recently I read somewhere that drinkers live longer than non-drinkers. Who is responsible for water leak? I have an underground garage space in our building. Last week I observed water dripping from the ceiling. The floor was already covered with water and my golf cart was damaged. I informed the community administration, who informed their insurance company. The next day a plumber sent by the insurance came to find the cause. At that time the water dripping had stopped. The plumber told me that the water drip was caused when the water company changed a water meter. I expected the insurance of the community to cover the damage. The administration informed me that their insurance company does not cover the damage as the cause was not a broken water pipe. I cannot accept this and ask you how to proceed. Making good food choices WHILE wo m e n wh o e n jo y a Mediterranean diet reduce their risk of a stroke, the protective attributes of fish, oil and vegetables are apparently less effective in men. Researchers have found that females reduce their risk by 22 per cent, but the odds were only 6 per cent lower in males who follow the eating regime. Cutting down on meat and dairy products, the preferred foods on the continent include fish, fruits, nuts and vegetables. Experts at the University of Anglia led a study of 23,000 people, aged 40 to 77, who were assigned into four groups, based on how closely they adhered to a Mediterranean diet. Volunteers were asked to complete seven-day diaries of everything they ate and drank, said to be more precise than questionnaires. They then compared their stroke risks over a 17-year period. The findings showed the overall risk was slashed by around 17 per cent, but with a massive difference depending on sex. Those at high risk of heart disease, leaving them susceptible to a stroke, also had a lower chance of the latt e r i f t h e y o p t e d fo r th e

Know the risks WEARERS of contact lenses are being warned to look after their eye hygiene following the detection of cases of a rare infection which can cause blindness. A preventable condition called Acanthamoeba keratitis causes the front surface of the eye to become inflamed, and contact lens wearers are most at risk. The Acanthamoeba can survive in the space between the lens and the eyes. To prevent the condition, lenses must be
properly disinfected before wearing. Experts warn that poor hygiene habits while handling the lenses can also increase the risk of contamination. And showering or swimming while wearing contact lenses can further raise the odds. According to the American Optometric Association, wearers should never sleep in contact lenses, unless prescribed by a doctor, never put them in the mouth and do not swap with anybody else.

A night of Blues TOMORROW (Friday) Richard Ray Farrell who was born on the New York side of the Niagara Falls will
be bringing his style of Blues to Nerja. Touring with his band across Europe, his concert at the Cultural Centre Villa De Nerja starts at 9pm and entry costs €12. A new place to enjoy gourmet food THE Gourmet Food Market San Francisco in Velez-Malaga is now up and running and promises to be a great attraction for residents and visitors. It has been a long time coming and cost just about €1 million with investment from the market itself, manpower given by the city council and a significant contribution from the Diputación de Malaga. The market has a large central terrace where you can taste the products of the different establishments and where you can also obtain permission to organise special events. to Live Well by Andrew Harding AFTER the last few weeks of discussing vitamins and essential minerals, this week I am going to give my reader (hopefully the plural) a dietary rest. I am limited to a certain number of words in my column as are all writers, so this week one recipe only with many ingredients and instructions, but still fairly easy to cook: Chicken Satay with a Peanut Butter Sauce Serves 4 1 kg chicken breast, skinned, boned, unpleasant bits removed and 2.5cm cubed 250 grams dry roasted peanuts, crushed 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Juice from 2 limes 1 teaspoon chilli powder 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons black peppercorns, ground For the sauce 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 500 gram jar crunchy peanut butter 2 whole large Spanish spring onions, chopped 8 whole garlic cloves, skinned and chopped 1 piece ginger root (7cm long), skinned

Chicken satay with a peanut butter sauce
EASY TO COOK: Chicken satay. and chopped 4 whole chilli peppers, deseeded and chopped (more if you want heat) 2 teaspoons salt, optional 2 teaspoons black peppercorns, ground 1 large bunch cilantro leaves, chopped 4 tablespoons soy sauce 4 teaspoons roasted sesame seed oil Juice of 2 limes 2 cups water 1. Make the satay chicken. 2. Prepare chicken, put to one side. 3. Take two bowls mix crushed peanuts with chilli powder, salt, sugar and black pepper in one, vegetable oil and lime juice in the other. 4. Dip chicken in lime juice/oil and then coat with peanuts. 5. Place in oven proof dish with two tablespoons of oil and coat by gently rotat-
ing and agitating the dish until the encrusted chicken is fully coated with oil. 6. Place in the oven for about 20 minutes (200 Celsius fan oven or 220 Celsius non-fan oven), or until cooked through. 7. Take out of oven and put to one side. 8. Make the sauce. 9. Place oil in pan and heat add spring onion, garlic, ginger and chilli. 10. Fry for five minutes add peanut butter, salt, black pepper, cilantro, sesame seed oil, lime juice and water, stir until it has a double cream consistency and is heated through. 11. Serve. Tip: I have said this before, but it is worth repeating for those readers who are new to this column. Any meat, fish or vegetable ‘encrusted’ (I can’t think of a better adjective to describe a coated and fried or roasted foodstuff, it would also apply to bread-crumbed or battered fish, meat or vegetable) can be tested to see if it is cooked properly, simply tap it with a metal spoon. If the tap does not elicit a ‘resonant’ sound but a ‘squelchy’ one, it needs further cooking.

MOTORING FACT PROJECT ONE, the MercedesBenz hypercar project, is back on track according to Tobias Moers, chief executive of the Mercedesowned tuning and performance firm AMG. He admits there have been ‘challenges’ since the car was unveiled on the eve of the Frankfurt Motor Show almost a year ago. T h e 1 , 0 0 0 b h p c a r, w h i c h i s predicted to cost €2.25 million, has begun testing at a British circuit this week. Just 275 examples will be built and they’re all sold, while the project is on schedule to deliver the first examples in 2020. Project One’s top speed is as yet unspecified, but 0-62mph acceleration is expected to take about two seconds.
