Cabo de Gotcha THE Customs Surveillance Service of Almeria has intercepted a yacht in the Alboran sea that was carrying 2,500 kilos of hashish, arresting its three crew members. The men are of Turkish nationality and the police raid was carried out about 60 nautical miles south east of the Cabo de Gata coast. ALMERIA presents its bid on Tuesday to become the Spanish capital of gastronomy over the next year. It is an annual competition promoted by the Spanish Federation of Journalists and Writers of Tourism and the Spanish Federation of Hospitality. The event’s aim is to showcase Spain’s cuisine both nationally and internationally, as it has long been one of the country’s admired selling points. The city has been working for almost a year to ensure that it has a ‘solid and winning bid,’ and the victor will be announced on October 17. It has been a process that has benefited from the cooperation and assistance of the full range of professional, eco-

The men have been put under the Court of Instruction of Almeria, to face charges, and the yacht and narcotics have been confiscated. An investigation by the Customs Surveillance Service is ongoing, and further arrests could be made.

Nurses injured in hospital brawl THE National Police has arrested four men and one woman after the alleged assault of two nurses in Almeria’s Torrecardenas Hospital. The incident is believed to have followed a chaotic brawl outside a nightclub in the city centre, in which the owner was left with serious injuries to his head and shoulder. He told police that he had been involved in a mass fight, and several of those involved then found themselves at the hospital. In shocking scenes, men who had been involved in the brawl then broke into

Mr Fernandez-Pacheco said that preparations had been rigorous and that “Almeria has already won because the impact of our candidacy has exceeded any previous expectations. “Winning would not be the end, but the beginning of a story that would lead us to join the network of world gastronomic destinations,” he added.

ONE woman is raped somewhere in Spain every six hours on average, according to a report from the country’s Interior Ministry. There were a total of 788 rapes in Spain from January to June this year. The Interior Ministry’s report showed the rate was a 28.5 per cent increase on levels seen at the same time last year. The total number of complaints of sexual assaults more broadly stood at 5,731 for the first half of this year. The same figure for January to June last year was 5,083, an increase of almost 13 per cent. Yolanda Besteiro, Chairperson of the Federation of the Progressive Women of Spain, said Spanish society often blamed women for attacks rather than perpetrators. “According to our culture if an attack occurs it is because the woman has not known how to defend herself, or has dressed in a certain way or gotten into the wrong area,” Besteiro said. “Despite the increase in the number of complaints

partly in reference to criticism from the leader of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) Pablo Casado over the State Pact. He claimed it suffered from “serious legal defects” and that it may be unconstitutional due to it having been passed without Parliamentary approval. Casado has threatened to take the matter to Spain’s Supreme Court.

FISH FRIENDS: Spain has a deep relationship with fish dishes. TODAY (Thursday) Malaga will host its first ever ‘Fiesta del Espeto’ (Festival of Sardines) on the beaches of La Venus de Marbella, La Salida de San Pedro Alcantara, and Pinomar de Las Chapas. One of the aims is to help get the dish added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. Councillor for Culture, Manuel Cardeña announced the initiative last week and emphasised the importance of getting as much public
support for the festival as possible, before Malaga’s bid is officially presented to UNESCO. A range of events will be laid on including a book presentation by a local fish historian, a skewer workshop, and a photography competition. Spain has a long history of love for the sardine, and it is steeped in many region’s identity and culture. The Burial of the Sardine in April is a Spanish festival that
parodies a funeral procession and ends with the burning of a large effigy of a sardine. It is a ceremony that symbolises the burial of the past, allowing society to be reborn and transformed with new vigour. Unlike most funerals, there are a range of colourful costumes as revellers dance down the streets accompanied by live music, but then it wouldn’t be Spain without that.

Helping hand THE regional government of Andalucia has allocated a contingency fund for the care of unaccompanied child migrants, following the provision of some 951 homes for them. The authority is also expected to give the green light to its Food Security Strategy for Andalucia 20182022, including hygiene standards for meat production.

In many cases people were trapped in their cars, as water surrounded them, and there was also significant damage to lighting, road signalling machines, as well as overflowing drains.

COUNCILLOR for the Economy of Almeria, Maria Vazquez, has revealed that her governing party (PP) has invited opposition groups to make their proposals for the municipal budgets of 2019. At the moment the budget plans are in ‘draft phase’ and the council has also provided a form on its website for the public to contribute their ideas for investment.

Stroke action TORRECARDENAS hospital will soon have a stroke unit which will serve more than 400 patients a year. This will be a vital new service for the whole province of Almeria which expects to be operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The stroke unit will be located on the fourth floor of the hospital and the Andalucian Health Service has invested nearly €45,000 in refurbishment work and equipment. All the necessary diagnostic and
therapeutic resources will be made available, as well as new staff taken on. These will be professionals in neurology, radiology, nursing, and security. The stroke unit will work in close coordination with other services such as rehabilitation, haematology, and physiotherapy. Torrecardenas hospital will provide the sixth stroke unit in Andalucia, and the service will ensure that patients do not have to travel further afield to receive crucial treatment.

Home boom THERE were more home purchases in Almeria in the first seven months of this year than any equivalent period since 2008. In fact the volume of sales was 38 per cent larger than the same period in 2017. The data comes from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in its analysis of the transactions. In this seven-month period in 2018, 19,916 homes were sold, the highest number since the financial crisis 10 years ago, and

5,538 more than 2017. Although the news is undoubtedly positive for Almeria’s image and growing popularity, most of the properties bought appear to be for second homes. Indeed, current estimates are that only 20 per cent of purchases are not going to be used as holiday properties. Nevertheless, the real estate climate in Roquetas de Mar, Vera and other tourist areas continues to be strong.

‘Blasphemy’ case A SPANISH actor accused of insulting the Christian religion has been released without bail after appearing before a court last Thursday. Willy Toledo, who is also a prominent activist, was brought before the Madrid court after being arrested in the capital the previous day. He had previously twice failed to answer a court summons. Police detained him in connection with a Facebook post put online last year which defended three women facing similar charges. Insulting comments against God and the Virgin Mary were also made in the post, according to the complaint filed against him by the Spanish Association of Christian Lawyers. It is the latest in a series of cases which have seen artists, activists and others prosecuted over comments deemed illegal by the state. Toledo refused to testify before the court and only signed a pre-prepared legal statement. He later said his right to free speech was being violated. “Having five articles in the criminal code related to insulting religious sentiments is worthy of a third world country,” he said. Toledo’s post in July 2017 said Spain was “un-
bearably shameful” for charging the women over a mock religious procession which featured a giant vagina. He went on to reference God using swear words as well as using those words to comment on “the dogma of the sanctity and virginity of the Virgin Mary.” He later failed to appear for questioning claiming he had not committed a crime. The Spanish Association of Christian Lawyers said the remarks ridiculed the Christian deity and the mother of Jesus Christ. They also accused him of inciting hatred and discrimination after making comments outside the court in which he said “Catholic fundamentalists” should “disappear” from the face of the Earth. The Association said the case was not a matter of blasphemy, but one of Toledo attacking people’s right to hold religious beliefs. Javier Bardem, also an actor, defended Toledo and said such prosecutions put Spain at risk of returning to the days of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The case continues with a judge due to rule on whether Toledo will stand trial.

Deal or no deal? IT must be an incredibly difficult time to be a senior British career diplomat as after years of training and postings around the world you realise you are shown to be a simple mouthpiece for a divided government. British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley is clearly an intelligent man who has a history of working with Europe in previous roles but now, as the leading diplomat in the EU country with the largest number of resident expatriates and with six months to go before Brexit, there is almost nothing concrete that he can say. He is reduced to trying to make the fact that neither the British government nor the leaders of the European Union have any real idea of what is going to happen appear as if all is progressing smoothly. Parts of the Conservative party seem to be more interested in trying to oust Theresa May than to actually unite behind the government to try to get some form of workable arrangement in place before Britain drops out of the EU with no deal at all. There are a few things that the British government seems to be sure of and one is that in the event of there being no deal, your British passport will have to have at least six month’s life left should you wish to enter any EU member state and that you will in theory only be allowed to stay for three months unless already registered as a resident. Hopefully, the ‘Chequer’s Deal’ whilst not ideal will at least be accepted by the British and European parliaments and then further negotiations can take place for the benefit of us all.

Three arrested in trafficking bust THREE men have been detained for smuggling 14 Algerian migrants into Spain. The migrants were rescued 14 nautical miles east of Cabo de Gata, and had paid the traffickers €500 each to make the journey. The suspects had allegedly threatened the lives of the migrants if they reported them to the Spanish authorities. They had also used specialist radar equipment to work out the location of the maritime rescue boats to make sure their human cargo was picked up. The arrests come as part of a wider crackdown by police in Almeria on human trafficking to the coast. So far this year, the Na-

Horror assault victim named THE British victim of an alleged gang attack last week on the Costa del Sol has been named by two UK national newspapers as Craig Moran. Moran suffered from shots, knife cuts and punches after reportedly being tricked into a meeting. Police said Moran was ‘knee-capped,’ suffered broken bones in his lower body, and was cut from the corners of his mouth up to his ears, known as the Glasgow or Chelsea smile.
Moran was found after being dumped in a ditch. Reports in the Spanish media claim that the specialist Unit against Drugs and Organised Crime (UDYCO) has taken over the investigation into the incident. Officers from UDYCO are understood to be searching for a group of three or four Brits and believe the attack could have been related to a ‘settling of scores.’ Spanish police have not yet made any arrests.

Impaled on sun brolly A BRITISH holidaymaker was impaled on a sun umbrella after falling from the fourth floor of his Ibiza hotel. The 31-year-old tourist is understood to have plunged from the balcony of his San Antonio apartment at 10am on Sunday morning. He suffered severe injuries after the pole of an umbrella pierced his leg. The unnamed holidaymaker was aided by emergency services who sawed off the umbrella pole before rushing him to the Can Misses Hospital on the island. The majority of surgeries, organ transplants and cancer treatments that are performed each day require blood transfusions. Moreover, despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain this blood is through the generosity of the public. Those interested in making a donation will be asked to provide some personal and medical information and documentation, to prove their identity. The process of the blood donation itself lasts only 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). It is a completely safe procedure with minimal side effects, and every precaution is taken by medical staff for the health of the donor. If you want to donate blood in Spain you can do this at your local hospital or health centre, who will be happy to provide all the information. VOTE CARD: Sanchez may think an election gamble is worthwhile.
Sanchez may go to polls SPAIN’S Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has raised the possibility of early elections if his minority government reaches a stage where it can no longer pass legislation effectively. Sanchez said he ousted predecessor Mariano Rajoy of the People’s Party with the support of other groups in Congress that have shown willingness to support some of his proposed bills. In a televised interview on Sunday he said that should such support slide, he would
have no choice but to call an election. It marks a change of tack from the Prime Minister, who has previously insisted on seeing out the remainder of his term until 2020. Sanchez is struggling to pass legislation including next year’s budget plan with just 84 Socialist deputies in the 350-seat parliament. However, he said that he has been talking with allies like the anti-establishment Podemos party. One way to secure
Podemos’ support could be to raise taxes for high earners, which Sanchez plans to do. He may have also been boosted by a poll on the weekend that suggested the Socialists have a clear lead over their rivals. However, Sanchez also needs the support of pro-independence Catalan parties, and while he won’t allow a referendum on secession, he wants to explore ways of allowing more self-government for the region to resolve the dispute.
Driver dives 10 metres in crash A 51-YEAR-OLD Spanish man has been rescued after his car crashed from a height of around 10 metres on a stretch of the N-340a motorway. The incident happened in El Cañarete at 10am on Monday morning, in the locality of Enix. Police sources suggest that the vehicle was heading towards the Almeria capital when it careered off the road near El Palmer beach, shortly before entering the tunnel de la Parra. Although the man was lucky to survive the crash, he suffered a number of serious injuries and was transferred to Torrecardenas hospital.

A fast food giant has announced plans to create 250 new restaurants in Spain
REIGN IN SPAIN: Burger giant to open new restaurants. BURGER KING boss Jose Cil visited a Barcelona branch where he revealed he intends to significantly add to the 750 established outlets in the country in the near future. During his stop-off, he greeted staff and reportedly, together with president of the Restaurant Brands Iberia and CEO of Burger King Spain, Gregorio Jimine, offered Whoppers all round.
The Cuban descendant presides over the second largest fast food chain in the world, with 17,000 restaurants in 100 countries, and Spain is already its third largest market. Today there are said to be 60 per cent more stores than in 2010. But this is not enough for the burger boss, who wants to grow in emerging markets, in
high traffic areas such as airports, stations and service areas, and in mature markets like Spain. He is reported to have pledged to ‘reach the 1,000 Burger King in Spain as soon as possible.’ Competitor McDonald’s is said to have about 500 restaurants across the country, but more than 37,000 worldwide.

UK diplomat falls short when explaining balcony accidents GENERAL LLOYD MILEN, a high-ranking British diplomat in Spain, has come under fire on social media after he tried to explain the recent spate of balcony-related deaths involving British holidaymakers. Taking to his social media accounts, the Barcelonabased British Consul promoted an interview he had taken part in during the weekend with a top newspaper in Mallorca. In his interview with the Spanish press, General Milen spoke of the balcony problem and suggested why he believes British tourists have made up such a large proportion of those involved in balcony falls this summer. When asked what the British government were doing to tackle the rising balcony death figures in Spain, the British diplomat, whose remit includes the Balearic islands, claimed that the reason for the spate of accidents

One Mallorca-based emergency services worker took to Twitter to write, ‘Us Mallorcans are not used to snow, we fall out of the cable cars when we go skiing.’ ‘We don’t usually have kettles in Spain but that doesn’t mean we pour boiling water over ourselves when we see one!’ wrote another. Luis Alfonso, a Madridbased lawyer referenced General Milen’s interview and jibed that ‘When I visit the UK I now have an excuse if I have a car accident. Rabies alert TWO separate incidents in Spain saw a 59-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man seek medical attention after receiving bites from bats infected with rabies. Only 17 bat attacks have been recorded in Spain since 1987, however, this summer saw two independent attacks at opposite ends of the country just two days apart. The 59-year-old woman from Valladolid in northern Spain was attacked by a bat when she opened a cupboard door and the animal flew towards her. In the second instance, two days later, in Huelva in southern Spain, a man received a bat bite when saving the winged creature from his cat. After both victims sought medical attention they were reported to be in good health. They received treatment against rabies and their wounds were thoroughly cleaned and vaccinations were administered to prevent the illness from taking hold. A BULL smashed its way through a wooden barrier and charged two women to the ground during a bull run in Spain, before being tracked down and killed. The animal broke free during the annual bull-running festivities which are held in the village of Arcas in Cuenca, Spain.
RABID: Beautiful bats can carry deadly diseases. Wisely, the bite victims decided to take the bats that bit them with them when they sought medical treatment. Having the animals on hand for a thorough analysis allowed doctors to identify that both bats had European bat Lyssavirus in their systems. Rufino Alamo, the head of public health information for the Castilla y Leon regional government said the victims were “lucky” and praised the health services on hand for their decisive response to the bites. Mr Alamo added: “Rabies is deadly in practically all
cases if it develops.” The last rabies outbreak in Spain occurred in Malaga in 1975 during which two people lost their lives. Elias Fernando Rodriguez Ferri, a professor of animal health from the University of Leon warned: “If anyone comes into contact with a bat, they risk contracting the virus. That’s why it’s important not to touch them, dead or alive.” In the last 20 years, 12 people in Europe have died after receiving rabies from a bat bite and not seeking immediate medical attention.
Body found in cove THE lifeless body of a woman was found floating in a cove in the south of Spain on Sunday morning. The body was found in a cove in the town of Isla Plana in Cartagena after emergency services received an alert at around 8.30 am. The grim discovery was made off the Muelle del Maestro Romero beach in Murcia. Earth trembles AN earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was registered in the popular Spanish holiday destination on Sunday, with the epicentre off the coast of Fuengirola in Malaga. According to sources from the National Geographic Insitute, the earthquake occurred at 8.47pm on Sunday, at a depth of 65 kilometres. Another, of magnitude 3.1, was felt 11 minutes later, 64 kilometres deep. There
were no immediate recordings of material or personal damage and no emergency calls had apparently been made directly afterwards. Just off the coast of Malaga, under the Alboran Sea, there is an active fault which produces numerous tremors throughout the year, many of them barely noticeable. However, it was the source of an earthquake in January 1996 which produced a reading of 6.3.
A CONMAN who donated €2.7 million of stolen funds to the Liberal Democrats has been charged with laundering millions of pounds of dirty money in Spain, aided by his wife. Prosecutors are working to have Michael Brown, 52, and Sharon Campbell, 59, jailed and fined more than €9 million. They allege that the amount of hidden, ill-gotten money gathered and spent by the accused is more than €2.9 million. In addition, prosecutors claim that €40 million of Brown’s funds are still missing more than a decade after his crimes were exposed. The Lib Dems have repeatedly refused to hand back the €2.7 million of stolen funds he donated in 2005, insisting it was accepted in good faith. It was the biggest donation in the party’s history, but there are questions as to why it seemed to pass up simple checks. Brown’s looming trial with his wife of 25 years will be an

A WARNING has gone out to tourists in Spain following an alleged spate of robberies of jewellery and wallets by ‘stealing and robbing prostitutes’ on the Costa Blanca. Footage shot by a video blogger, Harry-vlogs-Benidorm, has gone viral with more than 40,000 views within a day. He told the Euro Weekly News that the video was shot close to the English ‘guiri’ district in Benidorm next to the tourist police station, which is closed at night. Harry, a resident for five years, explained how the women try to hug or grab the mostly drunk tourists with the aim of emptying their pockets. He warned, “Stay as far away from them as possible! They’re sophisticated and terribly bad... before you know it, your jewellery or wallet has been robbed. They are very bad creatures.” On his Facebook page where he posted the video he wrote, ‘SHARE THIS WARNING with your Benidorm friends: stealing and robbing prostitutes near the Strip in Benidorm.’ Harry said he has sent the

Dodgy cocktails BAGS full of contaminated ingredients used to conjure up cocktails were discovered in drains by Spanish police in Barcelona. Laboratory tests show that some of the stash was found to have traces of E.coli, which is a bacteria from faeces and, when ingested, can cause gastroenteritis. In some cases death. Officers from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil of Barcelona and the Beaches Unit of the city’s Urban Guard, found the products hidden in public drain and sewers near beaches. Speaking to Spanish press, Benito Granados of Barcelona police, said , “the ‘added value’ of this operation is that officers now have the scientific confirmation that these products have a bacterium that can be dangerous.” He said E.coli had been found in packages containing ice and mint, commonly used
in Mojitos. Among other ingredients seized was a green powder, with an unknown composition, that could be used to give flavour and colour to the drink. Everything recovered was sent to the Department of Chemistry and Environment of the Criminalistics Service of the Guardia Civil for the
analysis and preparation of the relevant reports.The results confirmed that these substances ‘can be harmful due to the presence of E.coli bacteria’. The revelation has prompted greater control measures in Barcelona, a popular holiday hotspot for British tourists. Police have cracked down on the sale of the drinks from
unlicensed vendors and have also arrested 18 suspects involved in the preparation of such cocktails. Police sources confirmed they were from Romania, Pakistan and India. The shocking findings follow warnings from the National Police in Spain after cocktail ingredients were found in drains in Benidorm last month.

GROUNDED: Ryanair expect a ‘small number’ of flights to be hit.
Another Ryanair strike on the cards RYANAIR employees from five countries including Spain - are preparing for a 24-hour strike this month threatening to cause ‘travel chaos’ across Europe. Labour unions have confirmed that Ryanair employees from Belgium, Italy, Holland, Portugal and Spain plan to go ahead with their strike action on September 28. Several unions gathered in Brussels for discussions and the 24-hour strike was confirmed as Yves Lambot a CNE delegate declared ‘Discussions continue without results.’ Mr Lambot spoke regarding Ryanair’s proposal to upgrade all staff contracts by 2022, adding: “This is too late for us. We want 2019.” The strike will involve members for several parts of Ryanair’s operation from pilots to ground staff to cabin crews. All want national contracts for their country of residence and
not the Irish contracts currently given to all employees. Ryanair remains confident the union action will not cause travel chaos despite the action shaping up to be Ryanair’s biggest ever walkout. Kenny Jacobs, marketing officer for the airline has said the labour unions are guilty of “repeated false claims,” which he believes to be “unfounded.” Ryanair has already promised to ‘pre-advise’ passengers if their flight is due to be affected by the strike action, they anticipate this will be the case for ‘a small number ’ of flights. Recently the airline was forced to deal with a German 24-hour walkout where 150 out of 400 flights were cancelled. Ryanair CEO, Michael O’Leary rubbished the strike, labelling it a “failure.”

By Tara Rippin CONTROL and surveillance is being stepped up all week as part of a campaign to prevent distractions at the wheel on Spanish roads. Up until Monday, the Directorate General of Traffic is reinforcing controls to avoid the use of the mobile while driving, in conjunction with the National Federation Aspaym, an association of people with spinal cord injury and other
physical disabilities. According to the DGT, in three out of 10 accidents, the common factor is the use of communication devices behind the wheel. In light of this, it is imposing between four and six points to offenders as opposed to the previous three. Statistics show drivers lose 40 per cent of their attention to the road and surroundings when using mobiles. A spokesperson said the use of devices ‘produces a risk of
suffering an accident similar to those with an excess of alcohol,’ which quadruple the risk of accidents. The initiative started this week on the the A-2 and M-115 near Barcelona, overseen by director of the National Road Safety Observatory, Alvaro Gomez Mendez. And volunteers from Aspaym are supporting the campaign by being on hand to make drivers aware of the consequences of their behaviour.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has hinted that he wants to raise Spain’s tax payments as a percentage of GDP from 38 per cent to 46 per cent, in line with the European average. But opposition party Podemos does not believe that PSOE is doing enough to raise revenues, and believes tax increases for the wider public can be achieved without causing undue hardship.

Eurofinsa takes a piece of Isolux ISOLUX, an engineering and construction group that went bankrupt more than a year ago, has sold its production unit to Eurofinsa. Eurofinsa will use the site to expand its renewable energy network, and will take on 20 workers from Isolux. The deal was settled for around €150,000, although it also includes the absorption of Isolux’s €1.5 million debt.
It will open the door for Eurofinsa into a renewables industry it has previously had no experience in. Eurofinsa operations director Raphael Benatar said: “This purchase will allow the company to compete at the highest international level in projects relating to transmission lines, and solar and electric power, among others.”

Meet Leapy’s dream woman… LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT DREAMS are funny things. Not generally being one who experiences nightmares (unless I’ve had a good old blue cheese late night overdose!) I usually drift off looking forward to what the next few hours of La La land has to offer. Sometimes I fly. What a buzz that can be. Occasionally I fall gloriously in love. I often find myself negotiating narrow ledges and falling from a great height. In fact, at one time this dream was so frequent that now and again I would allow myself to actually hit the ground, just to see what happened (presumably nothing, as I was still lying in bed unscathed the following morning!). I’ve had tea with the Queen, talked my way out of some serious trouble and travelled in a spaceship. Well folks all these nocturnal journeys pale in the light of the trip I took the other night. In an experience that was beyond my wildest dreams, (geddit!) I dreamed I was having an illicit affair with Theresa May! Yeah yeah, I know, I lied about the nightmares right!? Well, be that as it may, there I was, in a packed hall, trying to blend into the background while she ad-
TRUE LOVE: Or maybe the stuff of nightmares! dressed the party conference. After the meeting we both slipped off to the hotel and... no no, actually I didn’t - it wasn’t that much of a nightmare! To be honest I think the problem was me rising to the occasion. In the circumstances, pretty understandable. Probably took a leaf out of her book, she hasn’t managed to rise to the occa-
sion since she was elected! The point here is that a couple of Viagras would have got me out of trouble. No pill on earth will save her if Brexit goes (even more) pear shaped. Come back Nigel, all is forgiven. Dream on Leapy, dream on. What about that spoiled brat Serena Williams with her unforgivable, wholly petulant outburst
at the US Open last week? This privileged individual, who is actually living the dream, to me showed her true colours when she screamed abuse at the umpire who had quite rightly pulled her up for receiving on court coaching and smashing her racket. She continued her vitriolic hatred at this (absolutely correct) court official by calling him a liar, a thief and then accusing him of sexism. Naturally this awful woman was losing her match at the time! Who knows what unfair disadvantage this outburst created for her unfortunate opponent, whose quiet dignity and to my mind nerves of steel, still enabled her to go on and win the title? (there is a God!) ‘It wasn’t fair, I was standing up for women’s rights,’ bleated the Williams woman to the press the following day. Well I’ll tell you something girls, females like this are the enemy in your midst, especially those who have become multi-millionaires by simply being female and knocking a ball over a net. Oh, and by the way, this thoroughly nasty piece of work, also accused the artist who depicted her in a brilliant caricature the following day, of being a racist! Why am I not surprised!? TECH FOR THE TIMID FORGET 2012. For all we sad souls hooked on technology, the real date the world was supposed to end was the final midnight of 1999. The hugely-hyped Millennium Bug made millions for its ‘pest controllers’ worldwide. Power grids would collapse because older computer systems couldn’t handle dates beyond 1999. Civilisation would implode. Mea culpa: I was one of those ‘experts’, and I probably made enough from peddling my own alarmist Millennium Bug articles that I didn’t have to work again until, oh I dunno, the following Tuesday. Was it all much ado about nothing? After the world threw an astonishing €500 billion - at the ‘problem’, the worst that actually happened was a few HSBC cash dispensers failed, some invalid Australian bus tickets, and shock horror, sundry lottery machines throwing a wobbly in America. It did all set me wondering just how reliable even the absolute experts’ tech predictions can be, given that by now we were supposed to be getting around in flying cars and letting robots do all

THE END IS NIGH: It wasn’t. our work. Certainly we’re close enough now to a favourite prediction date, 2020, to make educated guesses on whether some of the most popular predictions might actually happen: the Internet of Things taking over the world, automation in everything from grocery shopping to replacing the poor warehouse sods working for peanuts ‘picking’ our online orders, cryptocurrencies like Bit-
coin going mainstream, blockchain tightening up online security overall, and artificial intelligence, where of course resistance is futile. But what then? How many of these regularly-aired expert predictions are likely to become reality by 2030, 2040 or even 2050? • Nanobots plugging our brains directly into the cloud.
• Human reincarnation through Artificial Intelligence. • Space tourism. • Self-driving, (flying?) cars. • Unlimited energy from ocean thermal power. • Wars unabated (sigh), but fought by robots. • No more vegetarianism: all meat is synthetic. • Intercontinental railways. • Cancer cured. • Drones mapping every inch of the planet, including the ocean floor. • No more smartphones; voicebots everywhere. • Textbooks replaced by virtual reality. • Hyperloop travel making today’s trains seem like Stephenson’s Rocket. • All new houses built by 3D printers (the Dutch have already started). • Virtual telepathy dominating personal communication. And perhaps the scariest of all: • Half the world’s current jobs will no longer exist by 2050. Including writing this column. So enjoy it while you can. Please.
Back to the future A CLAIRVOYANTS’ association once cancelled its meeting ‘due to unforeseen circumstances’. So what predictive hope is there for the rest of us, especially when an IBM chairman once famously said the world would never need more than four or five computers, and Bill Gates thought the internet was a passing fad? In 1895 the president of the British Royal Society said heavier-than-air flying machines were a scientific impossibility. The British Post Office dismissed phones as an American novelty not needed in England, ‘where we have more than enough messenger boys.’ Most illuminating of all was the prediction of a leading Oxford academic in 1878. ‘When the current Paris exhibition closes,’ he pontificated, ‘electric light will close with it, and no more will be heard of it.’

Ahead of that, you might have seen that the Government has published a series of technical notices on a range of areas, to help businesses and citizens prepare in the unlikely event of a no-deal Brexit. Firstly, let me reassure you though that the Government does not want, nor does it expect, a no deal outcome in the negotiations. As a result of the significant progress made in negotiations, I remain confident that the UK will agree a positive and ambitious deal with the EU - an outcome that is in the interests of both the UK and the EU, and in the interest of both British and EU citizens. Researchers found that giving students a treat means they not only evaluate their teachers as better educators but also believe the course itself’s improved. The German study demonstrated that in classes involving chocolate biscuits the teacher was rated about 4 per cent better than in classes without, while the course material was judged 20 per cent better. Wow! Suggestive digestive? Well that takes the biscuit! Sounds easy in principle but with PC/Generation Snowflake you’d bankrupt yourself buying gluten free, halal, ethically-sourced vegan, low-fat biscuits. And then there’s the risk of invading their safe spaces and the offer of biscuits being seen as a ‘sexual advance’.

Lecturers are supposed to be objective and unbiased in their assessment of students but surely there’s a natural tendency for students to give better reviews to lecturers who’ve given them higher marks? And student ratings in module questionnaires are readily manipulated too even without biscuits. One old trick used by staff is to get students to complete their questionnaires at an early morning session. Generally, only eager, committed students come to these classes - the smarty-pants, more know-it-all ones are still fast asleep!
More seriously, using the results of such questionnaires to decide staff promotion and remuneration is distinctly counter-productive in educational terms. It provides a major inducement for staff not only to avoid teaching anything ‘hard’ but promotes grade inflation. Finally, how reassuring to know that Oxbridge students don’t spend all their time protesting about Britain’s colonial past. Oxford has overtaken Cambridge as the university that spends the most on sex toys from Ann Summers: £11,266 (€12,631) to £9,410 (€10,550). Leeds and Manchester were in third and fourth place. I live on the first floor of an apartment block and there are mould spots on the inside of a wall. It appears that the cause is a retractable awning (toldo) belonging to the neighbour, that is always open. When it rains, the water runs against our apartment wall and causes seepage. If the owner of the flat hears of the problem from his president, this will sound more official than a complaint from a neighbour.

K E V I N S PA C E Y ’ S H o u s e O f C a r d s character has been officially killed off, according to a new trailer for season six of the show. The trailer shows Robin Wright, who p l a y s S p a c e y ’s s c r e e n w i f e C l a i r e , standing by Frank Underwood’s grave and delivering a few emotionless words. “I’ll tell you this though, Francis,” she says. “When they bury me, it won’t be in my backyard. And when they pay their respects, they’ll have to wait in line.” The trailer gives no details of how Underwood dies, but Netflix has said
that the sixth and final season will focus on Wright’s devious character, who became US president at the end of season five. Spacey was dropped from the series last year - following claims of sexual misconduct - or ‘inappropriate behaviour’ but it was not known how his ruthl e s s U S p r e s i d e n t c h a r a c t e r, F r a n c i s Underwood, would be written out of the TV show. More than 30 people have made allegations against the Oscar-winning actor. The sixth season of House Of Cards is due to be released on November 2, and will consist of eight episodes, rather than the 13 episodes of previous seasons.

Partido Popular leader Pablo Casado’s degree, also in Autonomous Law, apparently has a similar pedigree. Pedro Sanchez’s ex-Health minister Carmen Monton, with a Master’s in Inter-disciplinary Gender Studies from the same university, was the next to have her academic record torn to shreds. Cifuentes and Casado were indifferent students who obtained indifferent Law degrees while Monton studied Medicine and her Master’s degree should have been a walkover.

Million dollar con! Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I DO love a talent show. I always have - all the way back to Hughie Green with Opportunity Knocks, up to today’s stuff like X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and I even watch America’s Got Talent. These shows give the chance for someone to get the break they need. I like the answers contestants give when someone on the judges’ panel asks, ‘And what will you do with the million dollar prize money.’ They say they are going to do this or they are going to do that. But the truth is that they are very unlikely to do anything with it as, if like me, you read the small print in the closing seconds of the show, they state that the prize money is paid over 40 years. Yup, that’s right, you read it correctly - 40 years! Are they taking the Michael or what? Is it a con? Well, in my opinion, it is. I know they are promised other stuff like a show in Las Vegas. But, if you offer a million dollar prize, give them the prize and be done with it. Over 40 years the prize money is paid as an annuity which works out at about $500 a week less tax which can be increased if it’s added to any other earnings.
Winners are given an option of taking a lump sum of about $430,000 which is also added to their annual income don’t forget, so after taxes they are left with approximately $200k. That’s still a nice amount but it’s not a million dollars. If they said the prize money was $200k do they think nobody would turn up for auditions? Of course they would, because they want to be famous. So just be honest. Why do all these shows have to make out the prizes are better than they are? If they were doing it for the money most could earn more than $25k a year busking and that’s readies which they would probably not declare anyway, or at least not all of it. It’s like the programme Dragons’ Den. Fewer than 50 per cent of the deals made in the den actually work out but no-one ever tells you that. Lock her up Do you remember Donald Trump’s mantra re Hillary Clinton? ‘Lock her up! Lock her up!’And then getting his frenzied followers to scream the same. Well, I’ve worked out that the easiest way for that to have actually happened would have been to give her a job as an advisor in his administration. I think we are at eight and still counting that have been nicked or are under investigation. Next week I might tell you why I’ve got the raving hump about Brexit - or not! FRANCES PRICE is a possessive mother-widow from the Upper East Side of New York City who finds herself in dire straits. STICKING your tongue out every morning can reveal a lot about your state of health. Its size, texture, colour and shape can provide a surprising amount of information, according to an Australian-Chinese medical practitioner. Waveny Holland claims that a tongue diagnosis, using a chart that corresponds to different parts of the body, can reveal signs of disease and imbalances that we may be oblivious to. A normal, healthy tongue is normally pinkish or light red in colour, with a slight white coating and neither too thick nor thin, and not flabby or overlapping the teeth. A puffy tongue can indicate a lack of nutrients and moisture, and a thin one or a tongue without any coating, could hint towards dehydration. If circulation is restricted, for example during menstruation, it may be purple, according to the expert. But a pale tongue can suggest a vitamin or mineral deficiency and is more commonly seen among those suffering from anaemia. And yellow colouring or a bump on the top, could be a sign of an infection or bac-

While a red tongue (depending on which area of the body this corresponds to on the tongue map) can indicate fever or a rise in body temperature associated with menopause. Deep cracks in the centre apparently indicate a person is prone to digestive issues, and ulcers can be linked to a deficiency. While a tongue with ridges on the outside edge is said to indicate fluid retention. Explaining how the organ relates to different parts of the body, the medical practitioner said the tip of the tongue reflects organs that are higher in the chest, the lungs and heart. The middle represents organs that are in the centre of the trunk, the liver and gallbladder on the sides and the stomach in the centre. While the back of the tongue relates to body parts positioned deeper in the trunk, such as the intestines, bladder, and kidneys. HEALTHY: Pinkish or light red in colour is normal.

NEARLY two-thirds of the population are ignoring the simplest step in reducing their risk of stroke, heart attack or heart failure by not knowing their figures. This is the finding of a new national survey by Blood Pressure UK which this month marked Know Your Numbers Week 2018. The charity is now calling for all households to purchase a validated blood pressure monitor, with government subsidies for people on low incomes and those most at risk, saving the NHS over £1 billion every year for the 6.5 million people who still remain undiagnosed. The research found that 26.7 per cent of respondents consider going out with friends and socialising more of a priority than having their blood pressure taken. What’s more, 14.9 per cent would rather watch TV and a further 10.4 per cent would opt to watch football instead. Evidently, it appears that high blood pressure, which is apparently one of the most preventable and treatable conditions but remains one of the

When it comes to knowing your blood pressure numbers, 63.7 per cent of people do not know theirs, with 16.2 per cent thinking a healthy blood pressure reading is 130/80mmHg which implies pre-high blood pressure, compared to an ideal blood pressure reading of 120/80mmHg. Of the 33.7 per cent of people who own a blood pressure monitor, 41.7 per cent still go to their GP more than once a year to be tested, with 26.2 per cent believing they will receive a more accurate reading. Meanwhile of the 66.3 per cent of people who do not own a blood pressure monitor, just over a quarter say they don’t feel the
need to test their blood pressure at all. And 16.6 per cent claim they only trust their GPs to test them. Almost a third of people think those aged 40 plus should start to worry about their blood pressure, only 19.3 per cent believe those in their 30’s should worry. With unhealthy lifestyles and poor diet contributing to more young people in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s being diagnosed with hypertension, around one-inthree people in the UK are now living with high blood pressure. Key risk factors for developing high blood pressure are eating too much salt, not enough fruit and vegetables, being overweight and not taking enough exercise. As well as sloughing off dead skin cells, it boosts circulation and gives skin a lovely glow. If you want to moisturise, beat an egg yolk and mix with one teaspoon of olive oil. Both are packed with nourishing ingredients that will give skin cells a moisture boost. Leave on for 15 minutes, then remove using a cotton wool ball that has been dipped in lukewarm milk.

An unusual name for an unusual band NAMED after the Grouch Marx character in Duck Soup, Rufus T Firefly are an Indie Rock Band who were formed in Aranjuez in 2006. They are currently on tour
promoting their sixth release Lotus which appeared in June of this year and they will be gigging at the Madchester Club in Almeria City on October 13 with tickets online
costing €15.40. This new album is part of a concept which follows on from the 2017 release Magnolia and the two albums together form a whole work.
Reviews of the band on their Facebook page suggest that they give a great performance and this is likely to be their last gig in the area for some time.

Tuna: delicious, fresh, light and healthy
TASTY: A balanced diet. stalks discarded 4 tablespoons olive oil 4 tuna steaks, 150-175g each salt and black pepper, freshly ground 4 lemon wedges, to serve 4 tbsp olive oil 50g white bread, diced 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 red chilli, finely diced (or more if you like heat) 6 canned plum tomatoes 100g blanched flaked almonds, toasted 2 small jars of roasted red peppers (drained) juice of 2 lemons, and zest from 1 of them freshly ground salt and black pepper 1. First make the Romesco sauce. Heat the olive oil in a small, heavy-based frying pan and add the bread, garlic and chilli.
2. Fry gently until the bread begins to brown, constantly stirring. 3. Place the bread mixture in a food processor with the tomatoes, almonds, red peppers, lemon juice and zest. Process the mixture into a paste and season with the sea salt and freshly ground pepper. 4. Add the thyme to the olive oil and lightly brush over the tuna. Season the fish with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Reserve any olive oil left over. 5. Heat the pan until very hot, then pan fry the tuna for 3-4 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness of the tuna and whether you want it slightly rare or cooked through. 6. Place on the serving plate with the Romesco sauce on the side. Add a wedge of lemon, drizzle with the reserved, thyme-flavoured oil and serve. Tip: Toast the almonds in the same pan you cook the tuna. Tip: I don’t throw away unused bread I blend it into breadcrumbs and then freeze. Hint: Make multiple quantities of Romesco sauce, defrost and refreeze up to three times.

So now a special surveillance plan has been developed for the Sierra de los Filabres using the G u a r d i a C i v i l ’s S E PRONA environmental arm, three game wardens amongst others. The professionals who participate in this antipoaching device will use vehicles with official identification as well as unmarked cars for random checks in the area. They will double up roles to help spot and prevent forest fires too and inform visitors about good spots to observe wildlife and about preserving natural spaces and
Building for the future THE opposition Popular Party (PP) in Cantoria has asked the council to show more flexibility in order to free up regulations to allow the building of 700 new homes in the locality. The PP has criticised the council for three years of inactivity on housing, and that it is only showing some movement now because of the looming election. A consultation is underway to gather information on the possibilities of building on rural and undeveloped land in the area. There is also a push to provide homeowners in the area with more legal security.

Anti poaching unit moves in proper waste management. The regional government’s delegate for Envir o n m e n t a n d Te r r i t o r i a l Planning, Raúl Enríquez wants people to enjoy the area but to leave wildlife unharmed particularly during the rutting season. He said: “Every year more tourists want to witness this spectacle in Filabres and there are several local companies that offer routes and excursions with specialised guides.” He added that ‘photographic hunting’ or the

This is an initiative to implement a management model in natural areas based on the local econom y, a d a p t e d t o t h e p e c u liarities of the area and with the involvement of the agents of the territory, with the aim of generating stable and sustainable employment alternatives. To m a k e g o o d u s e o f natural spaces, the Junta de Andalucia has made a series of recommendations such as not driving off-road, not approaching or disturbing the fauna with lights or light sources, avoiding making loud noises and keeping your distance from wildlife.

New sewage works THE mayor of Arboleas, Cristóbal García, has announced that construction work has begun on the fifth waste water treatment plant for the town.
The new infrastructure, costing €220,000 is being paid for by Almeria Provincial Council, with the mayor welcoming, what he says is the last piece of the jigsaw in waste water man-
agement infrastructure for Arboleas. The new plant will service residents of the Los Menchones and El Rulador areas. “These types of facilities are very nec-
essary if Arboleas is to keep moving forward. We intend to develop in a balanced way with environmental sustainability. We are sure that very soon Arboleas will have all the infra-
structure finished and working,” concluded the mayor. The plant will collect sewage for treatment before it is released into a waterway in a clean state.

Record breaker ALBOX has a new athletics hero in the form of Juan Javier Jiménez Oller. He has just won the tough Peñarrubia Lorca Trail 2018 mountain race in a record time of 02h:04:40. It was the first race in the Murcian mountain race Autumn league. He was one of 435 participants who tackled the challenging routes. Some went for the shorter 12.3 kilometre trail, which has a 700 metre drop in altitude, while the main event was along a 24.2 kilometre route with a 1,600 metre drop. Now Albox Town Hall has congratulated Juan, featuring him on their Facebook page and encouraging him to keep carrying the name of Albox high.

(Leapy Lee) As an owner of a German Shepherd - one of the first to be designated a dangerous breed - and several other dogs, I would like to point out that there are very few natura l l y v i c i o u s a n i ma ls , a n d some of the smaller ones can be nasty too. The problem is the owner, in the same way that there are no dangerous cars that don’t have a driver behind the wheel. Too many people do not know how to train a dog, or understand that little Billy ‘playing with the dog’ may not seem unkind, but pulling e a r s a n d t a i ls ca n b e provocative. S mal l c h i l d r e n a n d b a b ies should never be left unattended with any animal. Muzzling is not the answer. Are you all o we d t o d r i v e a v e h icle without a licence? WHY can’t people be a little bit more considerate when throwing away their rubbish? I have seen people drive to the bins and throw their glass, paper and plastic in the normal bins, then drive off straight past the recycling bins! Is it all that hard to pull up at the correct spot when you are in a car anyway? The problems of plastic getting into the environment have been well documented and it is largely due to this sort of lazy and thoughtless behaviour. I have seen in the news that a young inventor has come up with a way of scooping up the vast amounts of plastic swirling about in our oceans, but surely it is bet-

Parking woes THANKFULLY the summer is over. I can f i nal l y par k m y car within a kilometre of where I live! Every year in August Fuengirola (Costa del Sol) is packed to the rafters and there is simply no room to move. Leave your parking spot and that’s it - you will be driving round for hours before you can find another. My point is why don’t the authorities make the town centre a residents only parking zone and set up free or at least very cheap secure park and ride schemes for the tourists? It would take the pressure off the town centre roads, and I am sure many people would be happy to know they can leave their car in a secure location where it would be looked after. And the locals would be happy that they can park a bit nearer home. David Andrews

Motor vehicle traffic in the UK was at a record high in 2017 as 327.1 billion miles were driven on Great Britain’s roads, a 1.3 per cent increase from the previous year.
KIAS’s new five-door tourer KIA claims that its new Kia ProCeed merges stunning design with the space and versatility of a tourer in a five-door shooting brake body. Looking at the pictures it does have an interesting design, with plenty of curves - although whether it could be described as ‘stunning’ is probably in the eyes of the beholder. The ProCeed will make its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, before going on sale exclusively to European drivers at the

The new BMW iFE.18 is the car that will be used by the new BMW i Andretti Motorsport team and both were introduced to the press at BMW Welt’s double cone in Munich. The racing car might impress with a ‘futuristic’ design but the real innovation is hidden unseen deep beneath the bodywork. ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE SUV - sports utility vehicle - has been a phenomenal success in recent years its higher driving position giving a greater sense of control and its rugged styling adding more visual appeal. However, many SUVs have become more bulky over time and not everyone likes that - the bigger the car, the more difficult it may be to park, especially in cities where space is at a premium. Thankfully, the answer is the compact SUV, a smaller version which retains much of the appearance and practicality, but has a smaller footprint. One of the stand-out models in this sector is the Peugeot 2008, based on the platform of its smaller 208 hatchback stablemate, but with a cool eye-catching design and very clever use of interior space. Prices start at €18,564 (£16,600), there are various

Underway, the 2008 - just four metres long - is very pleasing in urban traffic, with light steering, and good agility for parking. The engine is surprisingly quiet for a three-cylinder unit, the suspension is set for ride comfort and the six-speed
manual gearbox is slick and precise. The cabin has a smart appearance with a central multi-function touch-screen dominating the dashboard and there is also a Peugeot quirk - you look over the steering wheel to see the instrumentation rather than through it. This is fine for normal size drivers, but shorter drivers may sometimes find their view of the dials slightly compromised. Cabin space accommodates four adults easily and the boot holds 422 litres, expandable to 1,400 litres by dropping the rear seats flat which is done with just the touch of a button. Rivals in the compact SUV sector include the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Kia Soul, but in my view the Peugeot 2008 has a distinct edge when it comes to elegance and visual panache.

Hamilton has victory formula MERCEDES driver Lewis Hamilton cruised to victory in the Singapore Grand Prix to strengthen his hold on this year ’s World Championship. Hamilton’s brilliantly controlled drive from a pole position was helped by the latest in a series of questionable strategy calls from Ferrari. It dropped Hamilton’s title rival Sebastian Vettel from second to third behind Max Verstappen, throwing away a position the German had earned by overtaking the Red Bull driver on the first lap. While Vettel was left to question his team once again this season. Hamilton’s only worrying moment was caused by back markers at about two-thirds distance. Haas driver Romain Grosjean and Williams’ Sergey Sirotkin ignored the closing Hamilton in the heat of their battle for position, and cost him his five-second advantage over Verstappen.
BIG LEAP: Hamilton has taken another big stride towards the title. Hamilton had to fend off an attack from Verstappen into turn seven as a result, which he just managed to do, and Grosjean was later given a five-second penalty for his misdemeanour. Hamilton’s victory, with Vettel third behind Verstappen, extended the Briton’s advantage over the German in the championship to 40 points with six races and a maximum of 150 points remaining. “We are going from strength to strength in terms of our understanding of the car,” said the Briton. “But it is not the end.”
