Floating corpse found by Tom Woods THE lifeless body of a woman was found on Tuesday, floating in the bay of Herradura, Almuñecar, in an advanced state of decomposition. An alarm was raised when a boat operator saw the corpse near the beach, and notified the council. Mayor Juan Jose Ruiz Joya alerted the Local Police, the maritime service and firefighters for the rescue of t h e b o d y, b u t th e w oman h a d a l r e a d y b e e n dead for some time. The i d e n t i t y o f th e woman at the time of writing is unknown, but she was initially taken to the Marina del Este before being transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine. Mayor Ruiz Joya praised the efforts of all those involved i n t h e sp e e d y re -
trieval and processing of the corpse. It is the second body that has been discovered floating in the waters off the coast of Granada in less than a week, after another a p p e a re d o n th e b e a c h of Castell de Ferro, in Gualchos.

SUCCESS: 50,000 people attended the festival. A TASTE of Germany came to Torrox when the town celebrated the Oktoberfest. The festival may have its heartland in the be e r ha lls a nd ga rde ns of Bavaria, but the southern Spanish setting is becoming increasingly popular with 50,000 people attending this year. That is not bad for a town with a population of just around 16,000 people - although possibly numbers were swollen by attendees from its German twin town of Kirkel.
Councillor for Tourism Sandra Extremera said that good organisation made it the brewery festival ‘par excellence’ in the province. She added that the town was now firmly ‘the little Germany of southern Europe.’ Not only does it have a large German community, but events like the O ktobe rfe s t at t r act m any of t hei r countrymen to holiday in the area. This was the third year that the festival has been held in Avenida Esperanto in the heart of the ‘German a re a ’ of the town, and t he second
since the event was extended to four days, two factors that have made the festival a ‘great success.’ Ext r em ena added t hat “beer of Bavarian origin has been the absolute protagonist of the event along with t he cl assi c sausages i n t he st yl e ‘bratwurst,’ although the local craft produce has also had a great impact among the audience.” She went on to say that people of all ages and backgrounds had flocked to Torrox for the event, giving the town a higher profile.

ONE woman is raped somewhere in Spain every six hours on average, according to a report from the country’s Interior Ministry. There were a total of 788 rapes in Spain from January to June this year. The Interior Ministry’s report showed the rate was a 28.5 per cent increase on levels seen at the same time last year. The total number of complaints of sexual assaults more broadly stood at 5,731 for the first half of this year. The same figure for January to June last year was 5,083, an increase of almost 13 per cent. Yolanda Besteiro, Chairperson of the Federation of the Progressive Women of Spain, said Spanish society often blamed women for attacks rather than perpetrators. “According to our culture if an attack occurs it is because the woman has not known how to defend herself, or has dressed in a certain way or gotten into the wrong area,” Besteiro said. “Despite the increase in the number of complaints

partly in reference to criticism from the leader of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) Pablo Casado over the State Pact. He claimed it suffered from “serious legal defects” and that it may be unconstitutional due to it having been passed without Parliamentary approval. Casado has threatened to take the matter to Spain’s Supreme Court.

Migrant care GRANADA Council has activated its emergency protocols for the first time to provide care to 17 young Moroccans who arrived in Motril and were staying in a police station due to a lack of facilities elsewhere. The migrants have been provided with medical treatment and food, and are also receiving legal advice.

35 TODAY (Thursday) Malaga will host its first ever ‘Fiesta del Espeto’ (Festival of Sardines) on the beaches of La Venus de Marbella, La Salida de San Pedro Alcantara, and Pinomar de Las Chapas. One of the aims is to help get the dish added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. Councillor for Culture, Manuel Cardeña announced the initiative last week and emphasised the importance of getting as much public
support for the festival as possible, before Malaga’s bid is officially presented to UNESCO. A range of events will be laid on including a book presentation by a local fish historian, a skewer workshop, and a photography competition. A MAN caused extensive damage to his car when he was driving in the San Sebastian neighbourhood of Almuñecar, but lost control and hit a streetlight. The accident, near the plaza de la Santa Cruz, involved a German man in a rented vehicle and scattered debris across the area. The man was uninjured.

Internet imp OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have arrested a teenager who was running an online scam involving the purchase of second-hand products. An investigation began in August when police learned of several complaints that had been filed in Gijon and Velez-Malaga by customers who had been cheated out of their sales. The young man contacted the victims through instant messaging apps, agreeing on a price and meeting place to carry out the transaction.
He would show the victims a screenshot of his bank statement indicating that he had sent through the payment, but this had been falsified. With close and detailed cooperation between the Guardia Civil and the National Police as part of operation ‘Parvulo 18,’ the boy was identified and tracked down to Torrox. In a raid officers were able to recover bicycles, tablets, and mobile phones with a value of around €2,220.

Museum money THE Junta de Andalucia has awarded Almuñecar Council €140,000 for the restoration and renovation of the Garden Palace of the Najarra and the Archaeological Museum of the Cave of the Seven Palaces. Delegate Sandra Garcia visited the museum and believes the funding will boost year-round tourism in the area and generate employment. Almuñecar is one of 18 localities to have received such grants in An-

dalucia, and in 2017 the total investment in the region amounted to €2.9 million. This has enabled the financing of 44 projects related to museums, as well as tourist walks and other activities. Sandra Garcia said the funds will “strengthen the competitiveness of these destinations and ensure the quality of the services provided. “They will improve museums, archaeological sites, signage, tourist trails, and road infrastructure.”

‘Blasphemy’ case A SPANISH actor accused of insulting the Christian religion has been released without bail after appearing before a court last Thursday. Willy Toledo, who is also a prominent activist, was brought before the Madrid court after being arrested in the capital the previous day. He had previously twice failed to answer a court summons. Police detained him in connection with a Facebook post put online last year which defended three women facing similar charges. Insulting comments against God and the Virgin Mary were also made in the post, according to the complaint filed against him by the Spanish Association of Christian Lawyers. It is the latest in a series of cases which have seen artists, activists and others prosecuted over comments deemed illegal by the state. Toledo refused to testify before the court and only signed a pre-prepared legal statement. He later said his right to free speech was being violated. “Having five articles in the criminal code related to insulting religious sentiments is worthy of a third world country,” he said. Toledo’s post in July 2017 said Spain was “un-
bearably shameful” for charging the women over a mock religious procession which featured a giant vagina. He went on to reference God using swear words as well as using those words to comment on “the dogma of the sanctity and virginity of the Virgin Mary.” He later failed to appear for questioning claiming he had not committed a crime. The Spanish Association of Christian Lawyers said the remarks ridiculed the Christian deity and the mother of Jesus Christ. They also accused him of inciting hatred and discrimination after making comments outside the court in which he said “Catholic fundamentalists” should “disappear” from the face of the Earth. The Association said the case was not a matter of blasphemy, but one of Toledo attacking people’s right to hold religious beliefs. Javier Bardem, also an actor, defended Toledo and said such prosecutions put Spain at risk of returning to the days of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The case continues with a judge due to rule on whether Toledo will stand trial.

Deal or no deal? IT must be an incredibly difficult time to be a senior British career diplomat as after years of training and postings around the world you realise you are shown to be a simple mouthpiece for a divided government. British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley is clearly an intelligent man who has a history of working with Europe in previous roles but now, as the leading diplomat in the EU country with the largest number of resident expatriates and with six months to go before Brexit, there is almost nothing concrete that he can say. He is reduced to trying to make the fact that neither the British government nor the leaders of the European Union have any real idea of what is going to happen appear as if all is progressing smoothly. Parts of the Conservative party seem to be more interested in trying to oust Theresa May than to actually unite behind the government to try to get some form of workable arrangement in place before Britain drops out of the EU with no deal at all. There are a few things that the British government seems to be sure of and one is that in the event of there being no deal, your British passport will have to have at least six month’s life left should you wish to enter any EU member state and that you will in theory only be allowed to stay for three months unless already registered as a resident. Hopefully, the ‘Chequer’s Deal’ whilst not ideal will at least be accepted by the British and European parliaments and then further negotiations can take place for the benefit of us all.

Horror assault victim named THE British victim of an alleged gang attack last week on the Costa del Sol has been named by two UK national newspapers as Craig Moran. Moran suffered from shots, knife cuts and punches after reportedly being tricked into a meeting. Police said Moran was ‘knee-capped,’ suffered broken bones in his lower body, and was cut from the corners of his mouth up to his ears, known as the Glasgow or Chelsea smile. Moran was found after being dumped in a ditch. Reports in the Spanish media claim that the specialist Unit against Drugs and Organised Crime (UDYCO) has taken over the investigation into the incident. Officers from UDYCO are understood to be searching for a group of three or four Brits and believe the attack could have been related to a ‘settling of scores.’ Spanish police have not yet made any arrests.

Impaled on sun brolly A BRITISH holidaymaker was impaled on a sun umbrella after falling from the fourth floor of his Ibiza hotel. The 31-year-old tourist is understood to have plunged from the balcony of his San Antonio apartment at 10am on Sunday morning. He suffered severe injuries after the pole of an umbrella pierced his leg. The unnamed holidaymaker was aided by emergency services who
sawed off the umbrella pole before rushing him to the Can Misses Hospital on the island. Reports suggest the British man remains in a serious condition in the hospital. Spanish police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances of the fall. The popular Ibiza resort of San Antonio has been the scene of numerous incidents and accidents involving Brits this summer.

UK diplomat falls short when explaining balcony accidents GENERAL LLOYD MILEN, a high-ranking British diplomat in Spain, has come under fire on social media after he tried to explain the recent spate of balcony-related deaths involving British holidaymakers. Taking to his social media accounts, the Barcelona-based British Consul promoted an interview he had taken part in during the weekend with a top

newspaper in Mallorca. In his interview with the Spanish press, General Milen spoke of the balcony problem and suggested why he believes British tourists have made up such a large proportion of those involved in balcony falls this summer. When asked what the British government were doing to tackle the rising balcony death figures in Spain, the British diplomat, whose remit includes the Balearic islands, claimed that the reason for the spate of accidents involving balconies is that, “British people don't tend to live in flats with balconies and perhaps they’re not accustomed.” General Milen alleged also that the difference in alcohol measures in Spain were to blame. He claimed, “a gin and tonic in the United Kingdom tastes of tonic, here it tastes of gin.” General Milen’s comments were not well received and he was widely ridiculed across Twitter and other social media forums in Spain. One Mallorca-based emergency services worker took to Twitter to write, ‘Us Mallorcans are not used to snow, we fall out of the cable cars when

An explosive evening RECENTLY, 53 international friends of the Lux Mundi Ecumenical Centre set off in the early evening for the short journey by bus to Almuñecar, for the annual firework display to celebrate the culmination of the festival of the Virgen de la Antigua. On arrival there was plenty of time to watch the procession of the idol from the church to the boat, enjoy a leisurely meal in one of the many restaurants, stroll around the fairground and walk along the seafront. At 11.15pm when the boat carrying the Virgen arrived back after the short voyage around the headland, the firework display started and it was truly spectacular. The finale took your breath away! The sky was full of gold dust, with fireworks coming from all directions, and the sound was earth trembling. On returning to the bus everyone remarked on what a fantastic evening it had been. Lux Mundi would like to thank all who supported this excursion, which enables them to continue with their charitable work and we hope to see you all at future events in the Centre and for further excursions. NERJA BOOK CENTRE was delighted to host the presentation of local author Abigail López Torres, launching her new book ‘El Hada y La Luna,’ which took place on Friday evening, September 14. Award-winning author, Abigail, recited a selection of her poems, beautifully accompanied by Alfonso Millan Quintana, a talented musician from Malaga. Alfonso serenaded the audience with a selection of songs, one of which was re-
vealed to be the inspiration behind the book itself, ‘El Hada y la Luna’ by Saurom. The atmosphere in the book shop was enchanting with soft lighting and handmade decorations amidst its maze of books, and full with guests enjoying a complimentary glass of wine. This is the first event of this type to be organised and hosted by the Nerja Book Centre and as owner Leslie Hands commented: “Hopefully the first of many.”
Leslie also revealed his plans for the future of the shop which include a major refurbishment, as well as many collaborations with different artists, both local and foreign. It has been over 35 years since Leslie’s father Derek first opened the shop, and with its vast collection of varied books in many languages, this little gem of a book store is still a favourite amongst the local community and visitors from all over the globe.

Spain in EU Gib talks TALKS started this week between Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator and Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, and other key ministers regarding Spain’s post-Brexit relationship with the United Kingdom and also the future of Gibraltar. Spain will push for the addition of a specific chapter in any Brexit agreement surrounding longstanding issues over taxes, smuggling and the environment originating from the British territory. The talks take place ahead of October’s Salzburg Summit during which important members of European governments will gather to try and make an agreement over the terms of the UK’s exit from the European Union before the deadline date of March 29, 2019. Negotiations this week in Spain will place a heavy focus on the future relationship between the European bloc and the United Kingdom and therefore will involve the Rock of Gibraltar.
GIBRALTAR: Talks begin over the Rock’s future. However, Spain is not planning to raise the question of sovereignty during this week’s talks. Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, the EU and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, has said he does not want the issue of Gibraltar’s sovereignty to be a sticking point in reaching an agreement over Brexit. Borrell has claimed “the issue of sovereignty is not on the table,” as he is more concerned about Gibraltar’s socio-economic conditions than the question of the Rock’s ownership. Borrell has cited issues such as the Rock’s airport, to-
bacco, fishing, commuters and customs as his greatest causes for concern and believes waiving, for the moment, Spain’s claim to Gibraltar is “the first step towards an agreement.” Reports suggest an agreement between Spain and Britain is pending regarding Spain’s issues caused by the British territory. Successful negotiations between the two nations have concluded after six rounds of talks. It is believed an agreement has been made regarding smuggling, taxes and workers’ rights issues in Gibraltar.

According to sources from the National Geographic Insitute, the earthquake occurred at 8.47pm on Sunday, at a depth of 65 kilometres. Another, of magnitude 3.1, was felt 11 minutes later, 64 kilometres deep. There were no
immediate recordings of material or personal damage and no emergency calls had apparently been made directly afterwards. Just off the coast of Malaga, under the Alboran Sea, there is an active fault which produces numerous tremors throughout the year, many of them barely noticeable. However, it was the source of an earthquake in January 1996 which produced a reading of 6.3.

Presence of pollutants MACKEREL: One of many species tested. FISH eaters in Spain have the highest exposure to chemicals which can affect hormonal levels and the reproductive system. A team from the Institute of Research Catalan of Aigua, took samples of fish and shell-
fish from 11 European countries and found a significant presence of compounds known as ‘endocrine disruptors’. Similarly, the potential risk to the population was evaluated, for which the available data on fish consumption habits in five of the countries and the levels of the pollutants found were crossed. The findings put Spain most at risk, mainly due to the high consumption, followed by Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Belgium. But members of the public are assured there is no real
cause for concern. Published in the journal Environment International, the survey revealed that the pollutants have made their way into the marine environment and transferred to the organisms that live in it. A spokeswoman for the Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies said that in high concentrations, the chemical substances can represent a risk. It is therefore important to know the levels present in the species of sea life that are usually eaten. But she added that
the concentrations of contaminants found should not alarm the public or make them change their eating habits. In total, 65 samples of fish and shellfish from European markets, fish markets and imports were collected and studied. The 12 most popular with consumers were analysed; mackerel, tuna, cod, perch, pangasius, sole, sea bream, plaice, salmon, mussels, prawns and crab. In all cases, the presence of 12 compounds was assessed, both in raw samples and in steamcooked foods.
Dodgy cocktails BAGS full of contaminated ingredients used to conjure up cocktails were discovered in drains by Spanish police in Barcelona. Laboratory tests show that some of the stash was found to have traces of E.coli, which is a bacteria from faeces and, when ingested, can cause gastroenteritis. In some cases death. Officers from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil of Barcelona and the Beaches Unit of the city’s Urban Guard, found the products hidden in public drain and sewers near beaches. Speaking to Spanish press, Benito Granados of Barcelona police, said , “the ‘added value’ of this operation is that officers now have the scientific confirmation that these products have a bacterium that can be dangerous.” He said E.coli had been found in packages containing ice and mint, commonly used in Mojitos. Among other ingredients seized was a green
powder, with an unknown composition, that could be used to give flavour and colour to the drink. Everything recovered was sent to the Department of Chemistry and Environment of the Criminalistics Service of the Guardia Civil for the analysis and preparation of the relevant reports.The results confirmed that these substances ‘can be harmful due to the presence of E.coli bacteria’. The revelation has prompted greater control measures in Barcelona, a popular holiday hotspot for British tourists. Police have cracked down on the sale of the drinks from unlicensed vendors and have also arrested 18 suspects involved in the preparation of such cocktails. Police sources confirmed they were from Romania, Pakistan and India. The shocking findings follow warnings from the National Police in Spain after cocktail ingredients were found in drains in Benidorm last month.

Dream deal ONLINE travel agency eDreams Odigeo has successfully refinanced its debt through €425 million of guaranteed bonds, due in 2023. The move enables the company to extend the maturity of its debt to five years and increase flexibility with the National Securities Market Commission. It will also mean that eDreams will save more than €12 million in annual interest payments, improving cash flow. The deal is expected to be finalised on September 25.

Court to make big call A SPANISH court is to decide within days whether or not to extradite Herve Falciani, a former HSBC analyst who leaked documents alleging widespread tax evasion, to Switzerland. Mr Falciani was arrested in Madrid in April on his way to a conference on the need to protect whistleblowers, but was released on bail. He has already been convicted of industrial espionage in Switzerland in absentia for the scandal that be-

GLOBAL EXCHANGE, a Spanish company specialising in offering currency exchange services at international airports, has clinched a deal to become the main operator of the service at Istanbul New Airport. It is the biggest airport contract in the history of the company in what will be the largest airport presence in the world with 40 offices. The inauguration of the airport, which is currently completing its construction, is scheduled for October 29.

TAX REFORM: Ms Montero is looking for ways to raise tax receipts. THE Spanish government has announced that it will be able to raise €4 billion for the Treasury by raising corporation and fuel tax, as well as a financial transactions tax. Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero said those who earn over €150,000 a year will also see their income tax rate rise to 52 per cent, bringing in a further €400 million.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has hinted that he wants to raise Spain’s tax payments as a percentage of GDP from 38 per cent to 46 per cent, in line with the European average. But opposition party Podemos does not believe that PSOE is doing enough to raise revenues, and believes tax increases for the wider public can be achieved without causing undue hardship.

Eurofinsa takes a piece of Isolux ISOLUX, an engineering and construction group that went bankrupt more than a year ago, has sold its production unit to Eurofinsa. Eurofinsa will use the site to expand its renewable energy network, and will take on 20 workers from Isolux. The deal was settled for around €150,000, although it also includes the absorption of Isolux’s €1.5 million debt.
It will open the door for Eurofinsa into a renewables industry it has previously had no experience in. Eurofinsa operations director Raphael Benatar said: “This purchase will allow the company to compete at the highest international level in projects relating to transmission lines, and solar and electric power, among others.”

Meet Leapy’s dream woman… LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT DREAMS are funny things. Not generally being one who experiences nightmares (unless I’ve had a good old blue cheese late night overdose!) I usually drift off looking forward to what the next few hours of La La land has to offer. Sometimes I fly. What a buzz that can be. Occasionally I fall gloriously in love. I often find myself negotiating narrow ledges and falling from a great height. In fact, at one time this dream was so frequent that now and again I would allow myself to actually hit the ground, just to see what happened (presumably nothing, as I was still lying in bed unscathed the following morning!). I’ve had tea with the Queen, talked my way out of some serious trouble and travelled in a spaceship. Well folks all these nocturnal journeys pale in the light of the trip I took the other night. In an experience that was beyond my wildest dreams, (geddit!) I dreamed I was having an illicit affair with Theresa May! Yeah yeah, I know, I lied about the nightmares right!? Well, be that as it may, there I was, in a packed hall, trying to blend into the background while she ad-

To be honest I think the problem was me rising to the occasion. In the circumstances, pretty understandable. Probably took a leaf out of her book, she hasn’t managed to rise to the occa-
sion since she was elected! The point here is that a couple of Viagras would have got me out of trouble. No pill on earth will save her if Brexit goes (even more) pear shaped. Come back Nigel, all is forgiven. Dream on Leapy, dream on. What about that spoiled brat Serena Williams with her unforgivable, wholly petulant outburst
at the US Open last week? This privileged individual, who is actually living the dream, to me showed her true colours when she screamed abuse at the umpire who had quite rightly pulled her up for receiving on court coaching and smashing her racket. She continued her vitriolic hatred at this (absolutely correct) court official by calling him a liar, a thief and then accusing him of sexism. Naturally this awful woman was losing her match at the time! Who knows what unfair disadvantage this outburst created for her unfortunate opponent, whose quiet dignity and to my mind nerves of steel, still enabled her to go on and win the title? (there is a God!) ‘It wasn’t fair, I was standing up for women’s rights,’ bleated the Williams woman to the press the following day. Well I’ll tell you something girls, females like this are the enemy in your midst, especially those who have become multi-millionaires by simply being female and knocking a ball over a net. Oh, and by the way, this thoroughly nasty piece of work, also accused the artist who depicted her in a brilliant caricature the following day, of being a racist! Why am I not surprised!? ANY teachers amongst you out there? Want to be a really outstanding teacher now that school’s back? Well, how about planning truly inspiring lessons while trying to understand the needs of every single student and passing on a passion for your subject that lasts a lifetime? Or: simply bribe the class with, err, biscuits? Researchers found that giving students a treat means they not only evaluate their teachers as better educators but also believe the course itself’s improved. The German study demonstrated that in classes involving chocolate biscuits the teacher was rated about 4 per cent better than in classes without, while the course material was judged 20 per cent better. Wow! Suggestive digestive? Well that takes the biscuit! Sounds easy in principle but with PC/Generation Snowflake you’d bankrupt yourself buying gluten free, halal, ethically-sourced vegan, low-fat biscuits. And then there’s the risk of invading their safe spaces and the offer of biscuits being seen as a ‘sexual advance’.

BRIBERY: Is not the best way forward. However, isn’t there a clear conflict of interest with student questionnaires anyway? Lecturers are supposed to be objective and unbiased in their assessment of students but surely there’s a natural tendency for students to give better reviews to lecturers who’ve given them higher marks? And student ratings in module questionnaires are readily manipulated too even without biscuits. One old trick used by staff is to get students to complete their questionnaires at an early morning session. Generally, only eager, committed students come to these classes - the smarty-pants, more know-it-all ones are still fast asleep!
More seriously, using the results of such questionnaires to decide staff promotion and remuneration is distinctly counter-productive in educational terms. It provides a major inducement for staff not only to avoid teaching anything ‘hard’ but promotes grade inflation. Finally, how reassuring to know that Oxbridge students don’t spend all their time protesting about Britain’s colonial past. Oxford has overtaken Cambridge as the university that spends the most on sex toys from Ann Summers: £11,266 (€12,631) to £9,410 (€10,550). Leeds and Manchester were in third and fourth place. I live on the first floor of an apartment block and there are mould spots on the inside of a wall. It appears that the cause is a retractable awning (toldo) belonging to the neighbour, that is always open. When it rains, the water runs against our apartment wall and causes seepage. Million dollar con! Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I DO love a talent show. I always have - all the way back to Hughie Green with Opportunity Knocks, up to today’s stuff like X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and I even watch America’s Got Talent. These shows give the chance for someone to get the break they need. I like the answers contestants give when someone on the judges’ panel asks, ‘And what will you do with the million dollar prize money.’ They say they are going to do this or they are going to do that. But the truth is that they are very unlikely to do anything with it as, if like me, you read the small print in the closing seconds of the show, they state that the prize money is paid over 40 years. Yup, that’s right, you read it correctly - 40 years! Are they taking the Michael or what? Is it a con? Well, in my opinion, it is. I know they are promised other stuff like a show in Las Vegas. But, if you offer a million dollar prize, give them the prize and be done with it. Over 40 years the prize money is paid as an annuity which works out at about $500 a week less tax which can be increased if it’s added to any other earnings. Winners are given an option of taking a lump
sum of about $430,000 which is also added to their annual income don’t forget, so after taxes they are left with approximately $200k. That’s still a nice amount but it’s not a million dollars. If they said the prize money was $200k do they think nobody would turn up for auditions? Of course they would, because they want to be famous. So just be honest. Why do all these shows have to make out the prizes are better than they are? If they were doing it for the money most could earn more than $25k a year busking and that’s readies which they would probably not declare anyway, or at least not all of it. It’s like the programme Dragons’ Den. Fewer than 50 per cent of the deals made in the den actually work out but no-one ever tells you that. Lock her up Do you remember Donald Trump’s mantra re Hillary Clinton? ‘Lock her up! Lock her up!’And then getting his frenzied followers to scream the same. Well, I’ve worked out that the easiest way for that to have actually happened would have been to give her a job as an advisor in his administration. I think we are at eight and still counting that have been nicked or are under investigation. Next week I might tell you why I’ve got the raving hump about Brexit - or not! The cost of the Privacy Suite can hardly be significant when placed alongside the original cost of the Phantom. All told perhaps €500,000 if you make an effort. I’ve swapped the vino for a hot chocolate and the air con and fans are taking a well earned break. TV schedules are settling into an autumn pattern and the date for the X-Factor final has been announced, ITV Saturday, December 1 for anyone who might be interested. Can only mean one thing my TV friends, I dare not mention Navidad just yet, right? Ellie (Mi Cortijo, Casares) emailed in to ask for a little bit more TV News, so here we go Ellie. TV News this week has to be dominated by the announcement from Netflix that Designated Survivor is coming back for another season next year. About time too. Another term for Mr Sutherland Jnr and his impossibly ill-fitting suits? Not to be out done, ITV’s The Chase recorded the biggest daytime TV jackpot of £100,000 a couple of weeks ago and I think it was The Governess who the contestants were up against. Well done them.

AN additional luxury feature has arrived for the latest version of the Rolls Royce extended wheel base Phantom. Though what more could possibly be added to the luxurious systems, devices and accoutrements that add up to the most luxurious limousine in production today. An engine providing silent and immense torque, an external profile that is iconic and instantly recognised. Not only a Wi-Fi hotspot and a bespoke picnic hamper for the day at the races as well as those doors that are sweetly nicknamed ‘suicide’ yet discreetly conceal umbrellas. Where else logically would you keep an umbrella in a motor car? Revealed at the Chengdu Motor Show, China the ‘Privacy Suite’ for the new and extended wheel base Phantom. The Privacy Suite claims not only to harbour a massive leap forward in sound absorption in a motor car and what appears at first glance to be a massive TV screen dividing the passenger compartment from the front cabin. It is in fact a privacy screen made of an Electrochromic glass. A glass that will at the nonchalant flick of the switch transform from opaque to transparent and then back again at will. For the really wealthy that crave ‘to be alone’ the Privacy Suite offers further refinements of solitude. Rear Privacy Curtains will surround the pas-

These four all aired at the same time on Sun-
day evening. I’m going to side step Bodyguard and Vanity and mention the other two. If you missed Bodyguard or Vanity, just hang around your local bank cash point looking lost, someone will update you. So, King Arthur’s Britain: The Truth Unearthed, BBC2 and iPlayer, focused less on The Round Table and a sword in a lake and more on what it was like in Britain during the Dark Ages. The DA covered a period in British history between 400-200BC when our ancestors lost the ability to write, the economy collapsed and Simon Cowell launched Britain’s-pig-farmers-have-got-talent. Made that last bit up. Professor Roberts, Alice to her friends, expertly guided us through a massive new excavation in Cornwall, throwing new light on this dark piece of our history. Well worth tracking down. The Celebrities on Bear’s Island (Channel 4) could have done with Professor Alice to referee their arguments this week. Last week Roxanne left with something like PTSD linked to a fire and this week a tropical storm hit the Island, the fire went out and James Cracknell finally showed he actually has some emotions, well hidden, but they are there. While a tongue with ridges on the outside edge is said to indicate fluid retention. Explaining how the organ relates to different parts of the body, the medical practitioner said the tip of the tongue reflects organs that are higher in the chest, the lungs and heart. The middle represents organs that are in the centre of the trunk, the liver and gallbladder on the sides and the stomach in the centre. While the back of the tongue relates to body parts positioned deeper in the trunk, such as the intestines, bladder, and kidneys.
STICKING your tongue out every morning can reveal a lot about your state of health. Its size, texture, colour and shape can provide a surprising amount of information, according to an Australian-Chinese medical practitioner. Waveny Holland claims that a tongue diagnosis, using a chart that corresponds to different parts of the body, can reveal signs of disease and imbalances that we may be oblivious to. A normal, healthy tongue is normally pinkish or light red in colour, with a slight white coating and neither too thick nor thin, and not flabby or overlapping the teeth. A puffy tongue can indicate a lack of nutrients and moisture, and a thin one or a tongue without any coating, could hint towards dehydration. If circulation is restricted, for example during menstruation, it may be purple, according to the expert. But a pale tongue can suggest a vitamin or mineral deficiency and is more commonly seen among those suffering from anaemia. And yellow colouring or a bump on the top, could be a sign of an infection or bac-
NEARLY two-thirds of the population are ignoring the simplest step in reducing their risk of stroke, heart attack or heart failure by not knowing their figures. This is the finding of a new national survey by Blood Pressure UK which this month marked Know Your Numbers Week 2018.

The pressure is on The charity is now calling for all households to purchase a validated blood pressure monitor, with government subsidies for people on low in-
comes and those most at risk, saving the NHS over £1 billion every year for the 6.5 million people who still remain undiagnosed.
The research found that 26.7 per cent of respondents consider going out with friends and socialising more of a priority than having their
blood pressure taken. What’s more, 14.9 per cent would rather watch TV and a further 10.4 per cent would opt to watch football instead. Evidently, it appears that high blood pressure, which is apparently one of the most preventable and treatable conditions but remains one of the leading causes of death, is of little concern to the majority. Of people surveyed 36 per cent are more concerned about other ailments (and the subsequent effects on their health) than knowing their blood pressure numbers, putting themselves at an increased risk of a debilitating stroke and/or heart attack. When it comes to knowing your blood pressure numbers, 63.7 per cent of people do not know theirs, with 16.2 per cent thinking a healthy blood pressure reading is 130/80mmHg which implies pre-high blood pressure, compared to an ideal blood pressure reading of 120/80mmHg.
Of the 33.7 per cent of people who own a blood pressure monitor, 41.7 per cent still go to their GP more than once a year to be tested, with 26.2 per cent believing they will receive a more accurate reading. Meanwhile of the 66.3 per cent of people who do not own a blood pressure monitor, just over a quarter say they don’t feel the need to test their blood pressure at all. And 16.6 per cent claim they only trust their GPs to test them. Almost a third of people think those aged 40 plus should start to worry about their blood pressure, only 19.3 per cent believe those in their 30’s should worry. With unhealthy lifestyles and poor diet contributing to more young people in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s being diagnosed with hypertension, around one-inthree people in the UK are now living with high blood pressure. Key risk factors for developing high blood pressure are eating too much salt, not enough fruit and vegetables, being overweight and not taking enough exercise.

Chromium: This is necessary for increasing the effectiveness of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood glucose concentration. Good sources include broccoli, green beans and potatoes. Manganese: Manganese allows your body to metabolise carbohydrates, fats and amino acids from proteins. This trace mineral is also a necessary part of bone formation. It is found in lentils, pineapple, chick peas and spinach. Molybdenum: An element incorporated into the enzymes that allow your body to break down amino acids. Legumes, nuts and grains are good dietary sources. Selenium: Helps control thyroid hormones that regulate all of the body’s metabolic processes. Selenium also functions as an antioxidant, helping to fight free radicals that can cause chronic diseases. Food sources include cereal, grains, nuts, dairy foods and meat. On the way there will be a stop for refreshments and on arrival at around 11am you will visit the leather museum and the interpretation centre of the history of Ubrique. After the visit there will be free time to look around the Old Town. At 1.15pm, members of the tour will rejoin the coach to visit Grazalema situated in a high valley in the Sierra del Endrinal and dominated by the magnificent rocky outcrop known as Peñon Grande. Tuna: delicious, fresh, light and healthy
TASTY: A balanced diet. stalks discarded 4 tablespoons olive oil 4 tuna steaks, 150-175g each salt and black pepper, freshly ground 4 lemon wedges, to serve 4 tbsp olive oil 50g white bread, diced 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 red chilli, finely diced (or more if you like heat) 6 canned plum tomatoes 100g blanched flaked almonds, toasted 2 small jars of roasted red peppers (drained) juice of 2 lemons, and zest from 1 of them freshly ground salt and black pepper 1. First make the Romesco sauce. Heat the olive oil in a small, heavy-based frying pan and add the bread, garlic and chilli.
2. Fry gently until the bread begins to brown, constantly stirring. 3. Place the bread mixture in a food processor with the tomatoes, almonds, red peppers, lemon juice and zest. Process the mixture into a paste and season with the sea salt and freshly ground pepper. 4. Add the thyme to the olive oil and lightly brush over the tuna. Season the fish with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Reserve any olive oil left over. 5. Heat the pan until very hot, then pan fry the tuna for 3-4 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness of the tuna and whether you want it slightly rare or cooked through. 6. Place on the serving plate with the Romesco sauce on the side. Add a wedge of lemon, drizzle with the reserved, thyme-flavoured oil and serve. Tip: Toast the almonds in the same pan you cook the tuna. Tip: I don’t throw away unused bread I blend it into breadcrumbs and then freeze. Hint: Make multiple quantities of Romesco sauce, defrost and refreeze up to three times.
THE Municipal School of Music and Dance and the Municipal Band of Music of Almuñecar are pleased to be able to perform this Saturday in La Plaza del Ayuntamiento at 8pm. Originally due to take place last Saturday, the concert was postponed due to rain and was to herald the launch of the new courses in the school of music. Don’t let thieves in while you’re out STATISTICS show that homes in high-visibility areas, like corner plots, are less likely to be broken into. While those in the middle of blocks or isolated, make better
targets, particularly if there is an unguarded area behind the property. But, inadvertently, we could be all sending our own little indicators that make our home a
target to thieves. According to a leading British building society, 40 per cent of people admit to posting pictures on social media while they are out and about or on holiday, making their house a prime target for anyone with ill intentions. The advice is to make sure profiles aren’t public and wait to post beach selfies until you are back home.
Your garden or yard could be sending out a message. If you have toys and bikes lying around, the chances are there are expensive game stations inside, an attractive thought for opportunists. If you normally leave your blinds or curtains open during the day and close them the day you leave for a period of time, this could be a calling card for burglars that nobody is home.
Remove any cut flowers which are visible if you won’t be in for a few days so that they aren’t left to wilt. If a home looks well-kept from the outside or through a window, it stands to reason the occupant isn’t going to leave dead flowers in a vase. If you are going to be away for a long spell and have a lawn, arrange for a friend or neighbour to cut it in your absence.

Motor vehicle traffic in the UK was at a record high in 2017 as 327.1 billion miles were driven on Great Britain’s roads, a 1.3 per cent increase from the previous year.
KIA’s new five-door tourer KIA claims that its new Kia ProCeed merges stunning design with the space and versatility of a tourer in a five-door shooting brake body. Looking at the pictures it does have an interesting design, with plenty of curves - although whether it could be described as ‘stunning’ is probably in the eyes of the beholder. The ProCeed will make its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, before going on sale exclusively to European drivers at the

UK driving licence threat THE UK government has warned that UK driving licences ‘may no longer be valid’ in the EU if a ‘no deal’ Brexit comes to pass. March 29, 2019 could be the deadline for drivers to use a UK driving licence in countries like Spain. When the UK leaves the EU, Brits on holiday in Spain could be forced to use an international driving permit (IDP) in Europe. Obtaining an IDP is a current standard requirement for drivers in some cases when travelling by car outside of Europe. Purchasing an IDP is at present a relatively simple procedure. They can be found in most post offices in the UK for the price of £5.50. However, this too is set to change, From January 31, 2019, international driving permits will only be obtainable from the government, details re-
garding price and issue points are yet to be revealed. The government has also announced that the once simple exchange of a British driving licence to that of another EU country will likely
not be possible following Brexit. The AA President Edmund King has bemoaned this fresh ‘burden’ to British motorists with hopes to drive in Europe after Brexit.

The CCCA rocks on…. HERE has been more fun and games than usual at The Classic Car Club of Andalucia this month. The Club has been celebrating 10 years of classic car motoring, 10 years of classic car runs, dinners, lunches, parties and numerous other social occasions! The month got off to a great start with a dinner, live music and a party at Treetops Restaurante in El Chaparral. Entertained by the stylish and talented Karen Cooper, the food, wines and stunning birthday cake was thoroughly enjoyed by all and contributed much to what was considered a fabulous evening. Messages of congratulations came from members and well-wishers around the globe and Club Presidente, Ian Giles, thanked all the members for their support and for making the Club the huge success that it is. Following this great night, a classic car run was arranged on the Saturday and was incredibly well supported with around 100 people arriving at Venta Los Almendros that morning to enjoy coffee, bacon sarnis and a chat with fellow enthusiasts. At 11am, after a briefing by event organiser, Ian Giles, the first of 50 classic cars set off in the direction of Ronda. At Ronda the route turned east towards El Burgo, just north of the Sierras de los Nieves, a spectacular ‘roof of the world’ style of road that had people gasping at the beauty of the landscape as well as the road itself. The descent to El Burgo was also pretty spectacular and here the route turned off north towards Ardales and then, just short of Ardales turned east to make the amazingly beautiful climb up over the top and then down into Casarabonela. From here crews headed towards Pizarra but a much

needed pit-stop was taken at Bar La Herradura, not far from Pizarra and Alora. Beers, coffees and small tapas were thoroughly enjoyed and the little bar and its car park was packed with beautiful cars and the chatter of people out to simply enjoy themselves, their cars and the scenery. Not to mention, of course, the company! It is rare that a breakdown occurs on these CCCA events and this day was no exception. It is a credit to their owners with such passion and love bestowed on these cars that they are so amazingly reliable! Once everyone had been fed and lubricated, cars headed for the new road past Coin, Barranco Blanco and on towards Mijas before turning off near Alhaurin and heading for the coast. An easy run down into La Cala then and on to secure
parking outside Avanto Beach Club in Torre Nueva. Here cars were parked as directed by special attendants and then, after 140 kms of great driving, crews were able to relax over welcome drinks and some tasty canapés before enjoying a super lunch and a glass of wine or two on the fabulous terrace there overlooking the beach. Live music was provided to help lunch go through to dancing and something of a party ensued, something this happy Club seems to be very good at arranging! Despite it being an important celebration of 10 years of the Club, no speeches were permitted, the only prerequisite being that members and their guests concentrated on enjoying themselves. Not too difficult really! Now that the noise and dust of this special celebra-
tion week has settled, the Club can look forward to much more of the same and its next events are a dinner in October followed by a classic car run on the Saturday. The October run is being organised by Richard and Nicky Masters and will be an ‘away weekend’ of sorts. The event will be based near Ronda and will start from there. The night before, Friday, there will be rooms available at the Start Hotel and things will be organised for members to enjoy on the Friday night as well as a fine lunch after the run on the Saturday. Just to round off the month of September, the JEC (Jaguar Enthusiasts
