Immigration crisis as Motril overwhelmed THE number of migrants landing on the Granada coastline principally at Motril - has risen 40 per cent with 5,301 registered so far this year. It is a stark reminder of the growing humanitarian crisis that has seen hundreds of drownings as people make the perilous sea crossing from Africa to Europe. In 2014 Motril saw just 501 immigrants land, a figure that is now reached in just two weeks. In 2015 that number rose to 901 before the figures started climbing at an even more rapid rate. The huge increase in numbers has come at a cost to Motril and the province of Granada. Until this summer there had been hardly any expansion of the services dedicated to the reception and processing of immigrants, leading to the immigration service being almost paralysed through overwork and a lack of facilities. The Temporary Foreigners Reception Centre (CATE) in Motril was overwhelmed - it had space for just 80 people. Immigrants had to be transferred to the National Police Headquarters in Granada. But a lack of space there meant immigrants were released after just 72 hours in reception centres. Many ended up congregating in the city’s bus station. In order to avoid situations such as this, Motril has used municipal sports halls on several occasions, given the obvious lack of space. Recently a tented camp has been set up by the military to act as an enlarged reception centre in Motril with capacity for 250 people. In addition to the problem of
NON STOP: Maritime Rescue has been kept busy. lack of space, the shortage of police officers had to be added. To deal with this, more than 20 officers reinforced the National Police of Motril. It has been announced that these extra officers will remain in Motril until October 16. But according to police trade unions it is too little. They are calling for 100 extra officers to
be drafted in to deal with immigration. During the past few days, the arrival of more than 300 immigrants to the Granada coast has meant even the new facilities are insufficient. On September 3, 241 immigrants, including 50 women (two pregnant) and 10 young children, were rescued from a total of five boats.
Two days later, the blackest situation took place so far this year: Maritime rescue found two half sunk boats carrying a total of 107 immigrants, of which five were lying lifeless. According to several of the rescued migrants, another four people who were travelling with them fell into the sea and died during the crossing.

Brit human traffic claim SPANISH prosecutors have warned there are a growing number of groups based in northern Spanish cities such as Bilbao and Santander using ports there to smuggle people to Britain, according to a recent report.
Court help THE Council of Europe human rights watchdog has given its backing to Spain’s government over its handling of the Catalan independence situation following former Generalitat head Carles Puigdemont’s filing of a lawsuit against a Supreme Court judge on discrimination grounds.
Tax hike call PRIME MINISTER Pedro Sanchez has said he would be in favour of tax increases to earn the state an extra roughly €80 billion to help balance Spanish books and maintain funding for public services.
A FORMER Russian who fell victim to an alleged nerve agent attack in Britain had previously worked with Spanish intelligence services tackling organised crime, according to media claims. Sergei Skripal cooperated with the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) in work against Russian-run gangs in Spain. He was previously assigned to covert work in Russia’s embassy in Madrid by the Kremlin, according to a highranking Spanish intelligence source and others quoted in the New York Times. The revelations come as Skripal fell victim to an alleged Russian-sponsored chemical weapons attack in Salisbury in March. The British government blamed Moscow for the strike and the Kremlin has repeatedly denied involvement. The New York Times piece cited intelligence sources, an unnamed retired Spanish police chief and the investigative journalist Fernando Rueda. The sources said Russia’s Military Intelligence Service (GRU) posted Skripal in

Poisoned spy Spain link Madrid in the mid-1990’s. He worked officially as a military attaché at the Russian embassy but carried out covert work whilst stationed there. Skripal was recruited by British intelligence services in 2004 which led to his arrest. He was released in 2010 as part of a spy swap arrangement with the United States and then settled in Britain. Skripal later travelled back to Spain to work with CNI officers on gang crime. Details

A retired Spanish police officer said intelligence services recruited Skripal due to his knowledge on Russian gangs. “We ignored the Russian phenomenon and its organised crime before. We did not know how they operated. Skripal offered a more precise idea of reality,” the source
said. Spanish intelligence services also recruited Alexander Litvinenko, another former spy who was poisoned with radioactive polonium in Britain in 2010. Prosecutors and police have both acknowledged that they worked with Litvinenko on organised crime. A lawyer acting for the former spy’s family said he was
planning on travelling to Spain to expose links between the Kremlin and leading Russian gangsters before his death. This has not been confirmed. Skripal was found unconscious along with his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in March this year. They were taking into intensive care and it was later revealed they had been exposed to the Soviet-era Novichok nerve agent. The incident has seen tensions between Russia and Britain and its allies escalate to levels not seen since the height of the Cold War. Several diplomats have been expelled by both countries and Britain issued a joint statement along with several other countries condemning the alleged involvement of the Kremlin in the attack. Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, both Russian citizens, were charged by British prosecutors in absentia in connection with the poisoning. Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement. Investigations into the strike continue.

The system is the brainchild of inventor Antonio Rico, his son Ernesto and their company Creacciona, and involves the reuse of surface water to be deployed underground.

Tourist trail THE Diputacion de Malaga has designed a new hiking trail called Ruta de los Puentes (Route of the bridges) which will link up seven districts in Axarquia. Councillor for the Environment, Marina Bravo, explained that the aim of the €150,000 initiative is to promote tourism in the region’s interior, as well as to adapt trails to meet EU regulations.
Jobs boost ALMUNECAR Council is to invest €665,000 in a project designed to boost employment opportunities for young people in the area, as announced by Employment councillor Maria del Mar Medina. The initiative was initially designed to help unemployed people under 30 get a six-month work contract in environment and maintenance related work, but has now been extended to those under 45.
Food fiesta THE Museum of Velez-Malaga will soon be unveiling its annual cultural celebration of local food and drink. Renowned chef Roberto Soler will be running a cooking workshop and creating a number of dishes based on raisins which are a local staple. In addition, the wine industry is also the region’s crown jewel and a range of tastings will be available.

Abuser runs A ROMANIAN man is being hunted by the National Police and Local Police of Velez-Malaga after allegedly assaulting his Russian girlfriend in Torre del Mar. Neighbours alerted them to an aggressive argument in Calle de Mar but officers only found the injured woman, and although firefighters helped with the search, it is believed the suspect fled the area on a train.
Crops up THE recent rains have been hugely beneficial to the crops of Almuñecar, in an important period for the harvest of apples, mangoes, avocadoes and olives. Some 53 litres per square metre fell in the areas of La Herradura and Pago de Guerra, but the deluge caused flooding problems on roads after the blocking of drains and gutters by fallen leaves.
Unhealthy act A MALE patient of the Hospital de la Axarquia punched a nurse after suffering a psychotic outbreak in the Emergency Room. The young man allegedly untied himself from the stretcher buckles when the female health assistant came to attend him, and was in a state of heightened distress. He punched her on the jaw and she fell to the floor before her colleagues quickly arrived to restrain the patient.
After managing to calm him down they performed a drug test which produced a negative result. The man, of foreign nationality, has been transferred to the Acute Unit of the hospital for further treatment. The nurse was treated for her injuries and a complaint has been filed with the National Police. A protest took place last Monday outside the building against the recent cases of physical abuse in hospitals.

THE BIG PICTURE Nº 31 E V E RY y e a r o n t h e t h i r d Sunday in September, the village of Alfarnate displays its devotion to its pat r o n s a i n t , t h e Vi rg i n o f Monsalud. It is also a unique celebration of the shared history of Christians and Moors living in the area. The tradition was lost for decades after the Spanish C i v i l Wa r b u t c a m e b a c k strong in the 1990’s. It marks a show of devotion to the Virgin from the community, for her protection and guidance over the years. There is a Eucharist in the church square, followed by a procession of the Virgin of Monsalud’s statue. Battles between Moors and Christians are also reenacted in the village, and writings from knights of the 18th century are read out. The temple in which the statue of the patron saint is housed dates back to the 16th century and takes pride of place in the village. Local people from all over the region flock to the festival to pay their respects and streets are lavishly decorated with flowers, plants and almond trees. Tr a d i t i o n a l s u i t s o f a r mour worn by the Knights are on display, while those representing the Moors wear turbans and robes. Speed read TORROX Council has installed a speed information board on its motorway to raise awareness of the issue to drivers. It is part of a wider move to increase the signage of the town with the aim of improving road safety, especially at historically dangerous areas. Councillor Oscar Medina has revealed that the board is located on the A-7207 between the petrol station and Algarrobo Perez. This new electric sign will not

record and penalise speeding drivers, but it will show them how fast they are going with a view to making them more aware of it. Mr Medina added that Torrox’s road service department works tirelessly throughout the year, both in the historic centre and on the coast, to make sure the most pressing road improvements are addressed. Other completed works include the paving and signage on Avenida El Faro, and the El Morche promenade restoration.

Taking flight THE European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded a €250 million contract to a Spanish company to run part of the body’s satellite navigation system. GMV, based in Tres Cantos in the Madrid region, is set to maintain and develop the ground operations for the Galileo programme. It is the largest contract in history in money terms awarded to the Spanish space industry. Jesus Serrano, the general director of GMV, said the company would now be responsible for the infrastructure which monitored and controlled all satellites in the GMV constellation. GMV saw off competition from three other companies to secure the contract which was signed after almost two years of negotiations. The firm is set to join a multinational consortium of companies that will manage the system. Galileo was established by the European Union (EU)-backed ESA in 2000 to rival the United States government-run Global Positioning System (GPS). The EU has invested some €10 billion in the programme since it began. Data collected by Galileo satellites is used in
mobile phones, cars, sea and other forms of land transport for navigational purposes. It is also used by fire, police and search and rescue services. Javier Benedicto, head of the Galileo programme, said the system had a margin of error of less than one metre. He added it was the only one which operated on three frequencies. Benedicto said the ESA planned to boost the number of satellites in orbit under the programme from the current 26 to 40. The increase would allow Galileo to be put to additional uses, he added. Augusto Gonzalez, a navigation advisor to the European Commission (EC), said: “The observations we are making tell us that Galileo is in line to become the leading satellite navigation system.” GMV representatives signed the ESA contract at a ceremony attended by Spain’s Science Minister Pedro Duque last week. Duque said it was a sign Spanish industry knew investing in science and technology would prove profitable in the long term. “This contract is a great example of the good work done over the years,” Duque said.

I think 18 is a sensible age to set it, you’re a bit more sensible and adult by then. But I started earlier, my dad used to take me along to the pub before he started work, when I was 15! In Scotland a while back they used to close the pubs at 9pm, but that just led to quicker drinking so it didn’t solve anything. The Spanish are good at allowing kids to have a drink at home in a relaxed way so that they get used to it. That said I went to sea at 15 with the Navy and was drinking from then on. I was married and had two children by 21 so I lived early. But I can handle my drink, I’m 74 and still going strong! It’s healthier for young people so that they can focus on their studies. In Holland it changed from 16 a few years ago. OUR VIEW Summer’s over THE rain this weekend seems to have confirmed that summer is now over especially as the first wave of Spanish children went back to school last Monday and the rest return next week. There were areas where the rains were so heavy that cars were washed away and considerable damage was caused, but in other areas it wasn’t too bad and will help to fill aquifers as it stopped and started, allowing for much of the water to refresh the ground. In the Costa del Sol there will be less congestion as the holidaymakers from Madrid and Sevilla return home and those from North Africa have driven back to their places of work mainly in Spain, France and Italy. Another sign of the end of summer is the fact that those toll roads which hike their prices up to take advantage of holidaymakers will be reducing them and then counting the days to Christmas and Easter so that they can mark them up by 50 per cent or more again. Councils who have been staging free concerts and other entertaining diversions will be getting back to balancing their finances and preparing for the inevitable Fairs and Festivals yet to come. Some restaurants and bars will now close until Christmas if they have had a good summer and others who haven’t may not be able to keep going. Things will quieten down a bit, parking in many places will become easier and charities which help the elderly in particular will get back to hosting regular meetings, so let’s all look forward to a great autumn.

Funding call for reforms ban, the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) head of Aragon’s Dipuctacion, acted as host. The officials sought to build a united front in favour of reforming Spain’s system for financing
regions which they claim is now outdated. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has ruled out making any changes to funding until after the regional elections of May 2019.
The six regions whose heads met in Zaragoza cover almost 53 per cent of Spain’s territory and have 21 per cent of its population living in them. A total of 55 per cent of more than 8,000 towns and cities in the country
lie within their borders. The authorities of the six regions claim ageing populations and the spreading of people thinly across their territories was contributing to funding issues.

Franco supporters in Madrid protest AROUND 100 people have gathered in Madrid to protest against preparations by the Spanish government to exhume the body of former dictator General Francisco Franco. His remains lie in a controversial mausoleum in the Valley of the Fallen, in the Guadarrama mountains 30 miles northwest of Madrid. Many of the protesters waved the flag of Spain that existed under Franco’s 40-year authoritarian reign, following his military coup which started the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War. Others held signs reading ‘leave Franco in peace’ and ‘Hands off the Valley and Franco.’ Franco ordered the construction of the

RYANAIR cabin crew in five European countries have given their support for strike action this month, throwing passengers’ flight plans into turmoil. Although the exact date has not yet been confirmed, unions in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium have agreed to a day of industrial action. The decision was taken by a conference of unions in Rome yesterday with groups including pilots, cabin crew, and ground personnel all represented. The unions involved were the USO and Sitcpla for

Spain, UILTrasporti and FILT-CGIL for Italy, FNV for the Netherlands, the SNPVAC of Portugal and the CNE/LBC of Belgium. They have apologised to travellers in advance but place the blame squarely on Ryanair for ‘ignoring the labour laws of each country in which it operates’ despite months of meetings and negotiations. A date for the strike is currently being discussed and it will be announced before September 13. Unions have highlighted a series of reasons for the strike, including: preventing
trade union freedom for employees; not recognising wage, social security and welfare rights; and using recruitment personnel provided by foreign administration agencies. For its part, Ryanair said: “Ryanair’s people have enjoyed significant pay increases, improved terms and conditions, and we have agreed to improved seniority structures, base transfers and annual leave. “We have done this in a year when we expect profits to fall by 15 per cent due to a combination of higher fuel prices and higher staff costs.”

Brit stabbed in hotel attack A BRITISH man is in critical condition in hospital after being stabbed six times while on holiday in Magaluf. The incident happened at around 2am on Sunday after a row erupted among a group of British tourists at the TRH Magaluf hotel. Four people have been arrested by the Guardia Civil and are being held at Calvia police station. Although the victim’s identity has not been revealed, reports suggest he is 31 years old and from Scotland. Anthem copy claims by Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S national anthem may have been based on a song composed in Andalucia during its time under Moorish rule, according to a video posted on social media. The video, posted by La Plataforma, plays the Marcha Real before then playing another piece which according to some sources was written by the Moor Ibn Bayyah, or Avempace. Carlos Sanchez, a Twitter user who shared the video, wrote on the site: ‘I just discovered that the Spanish anthem is a copy of an Andalucian song and I’m freaking out.’ Some users commented saying the song and the anthem bore little resemblance to each other. Others said it was another example of Spain’s borrowing from other cultures to create the country’s national identity. “The flag was taken from the Catalan navy, the chotis dance is German, the Bourbon royal family are French and according to a study ‘Castilian’ comes from Catalan,” Twitter user Zontar el Gran i Casamajor said. Avempace’s composition, named Nuba al-Istihlal, is a nubah, a type of

Signs of slowdown THE economy of the eurozone and the European Union grew again by 0.4 per cent in the seco n d q u a r t e r o f t h e y e a r, i n l i n e with the start of the year, according to Eurostat. These figures confirm the slowdown in the European economy, since they remain below the rates recorded in 2017 when the GDP of the Euro rose by 0.6 per cent in the first three months and 0.7 per cent in the following three. Compared to the same quarter
by Tara Rippin of last year, the GDP of the eurozone and the EU grew by 2.1 per cent in the second quarter, while in the next two it had risen 2.4 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively. With the emphasis remaining on the second quarter of the year, the countries that have seen the highest growth have been Malta (1.9 per cent), Estonia and Romania (both 1.4 per cent), while the lowest rates have been registered in
Denmark, Greece, France and Italy (all 0.2 per cent). Spain, although it has not led the growth of the region, has been slightly above the average with a rate of 0.4 per cent. In the second quarter of this year, the final consumption expenditure of households rose by 0.2 per cent in the eurozone and by 0.3 per cent in the EU, after registering both areas a progression of 0.5 per cent in the three previous months.

Government directed assassinations? LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ALL governments are not only capable, but often only too ready to use assassination as a means to a favourable end. Motives of course may differ. This latest effort, which was obviously the work of the Russian hierarchy and perpetrated as a warning to like-minded defectors, is not an exception. ‘Accidents,’ that conveniently solve political or embarrassing internal scandal issues have been around since the Neanderthals. And the British government are no slouches at it either. All the ‘holier than thou’ shock and horror reaction to this latest Novichok attack is simply because it was perpetrated on British soil by a foreign country. Morally the UK hasn’t a leg to stand on. It is my firm belief that, even during my relatively short existence, I have witnessed at least three, glaringly obvious ‘removals’ of fellow human beings, who one way or another posed a threat to the establishment. The first was the apparent ‘suicide’ of Stephen Ward during the Perfumo trial of the 60’s. This man was as deeply involved in that whole squalid affair as it was possible to be and so were others, whose names never came to the surface. Ward simply couldn’t believe
APPARENT SUICIDES: Dr Kelly who ended his life in a field and Jill Dando (inset) who was shot on the doorstep of her home. that he was to be sentenced the next day and that even his refusal to divulge the names of others involved (who were heavily rumoured to be royalty!) was not going to save him. Without doubt, he was going to enter the court the following day and shop the lot. But he never made it did he? That night he managed to ‘commit suicide’! Just Google up the
footage of his body being taken from his apartment. No nurses or medics accompanied that stretcher. He was surrounded and hustled out very quickly, by men in suits! Two more recent events also took some swallowing. One was the apparent suicide of the unfortunate Dr Kelly, who allegedly managed to voluntarily end his life in a field, after threatening
to blow the whistle on Blair’s so-called ‘sexed up’ blatant lies about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. A number of other scientists who worked in the same Porton Down defence establishment have also met questionable deaths since his bizarre demise. Another was the shooting of Jill Dando on the steps of her home in 1999. Jill Dando was the leading anchor of BBC TV’s Crimewatch and was, at the time, preparing to release explosive details of a leading paedophile ring she had been investigating. Her rather convenient, still unsolved murder, did of course put an end to this investigation and the subsequent unmasking of any high-profile individuals who may have been involved in it. Judges, politicians, police, pop singers? Who knows? Not us minions for sure. And with the elite of the country prepared to go to any lengths to protect their rear ends, we probably never will. TECH FOR THE TIMID WHAT’S almost the most expensive liquid you can buy? Champagne? Not even close. Rocket fuel? Hardly. It’s actually none of the above. It’s printer ink. Forget human blood at a cheap €350 a litre - raise it to €1,500 for that precious inkjet fluid and the only thing remotely close is Chanel No 5. Which doesn’t come in black. All this is why actual inkjet printers can be cheap-as-chips and may even be sold at less than it costs to make them. Did I get a bargain with my €45 printer-scanner-copier? You betcha until I put new ink cartridges into it the other day at €50 a pop. In thriftier times I was a dab hand at refilling ink cartridges myself, despite the unsettling effect on visitors of a household littered with used syringes. These days your cartridge may well have a microchip on-board to block such DIY workarounds. So which should you buy: a bar-

3D PRINTERS: Really have come a long way. gain-basement inkjet printer followed by its lifetime of liquid gold refills every couple of hundred sheets, or dipping deeper for a laser printer with a cartridge good for several thousand? They work very differently. An inkjet sprays minute bubbles of ink through microscopic nozzles. Laser printers use a toner cartridge filled
with fine powder and a heated fuser. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses. One rule of thumb might help: buy an inkjet for sporadic home use and/or if you print the odd item in colour, but a laser for the heavierduty office or that ageing familymember whose stubborn insistence on printing every e-mail makes him
eligible for the Dead Trees Society. PRO: Ink-jets are cheap to buy, do a reasonable job with colour, can print on all sorts of stuff including fabric if you really must, and won’t break the bank when they finally spray their last. CON: The ink costs several limbs, prints are susceptible to water damage, they’re slow, and they have limited paper-trays for big jobs. PRO: Lasers by contrast, are fast, produce laser-sharp (duh!) text and graphics, generally print at a lower cost per sheet, and can easily handle high-volume jobs. CON: Photo output ain’t great, they’re fussy about paper types, they take time to warm-up, the initial cost is higher and trust me, toner leaks are a nightmare. Whichever you choose, bear in mind one infallible rule: never let a printer know you’re in a hurry. That’s when you realise they have just three main parts: the case, the jammed paper tray and the blinking red light.
3D or not 3D 3D printers are the latest evolution in gadgets we didn’t know we couldn’t do without. Now you can pay about four times as much for another printer which won’t print when you absolutely need it. Prices have dropped at breathtaking speed, in direct contrast to the time taken to actually 3D-print anything, which is painful beyond belief. A halfway decent 3D printer can now be had for upwards of €200, and they pop up in the most unlikely places - like my local DIY superstore whose staff will print a new (plastic) part for your obsolete vacuum cleaner or other no-more-spares appliance, as long as there’s enough of the old part to scan. The ultimate 3D-printing dream? A 3D printer which will print another 3D printer.

RECENTLY we’ve been bombarded with a flurry of reports from consumer watchdog ‘Which?’ that basically confirm how nervewracking flying’s become! According to one survey, flight times have been quietly padded out by up to 30 minutes by major airlines (British Airways, Ryanair etc) to ensure they don’t arrive late and thereby avoid compensation for delays. According to another report, Luton’s won the title of Britain’s worst airport for the third year in a row. What an achievement. Well done Luton! Passenger activity at airports fundamentally boils down to three things: departing, arriving and waiting. Airport passengers are a captive audience, with disposable income, time on their hands, and literally nowhere else to go. So is it surprising airports are scrupulously designed to make you spend your hard-earned cash? Well, they might think those wretched ‘serpentine’ duty free shops smelling like a tart’s parlour you’re forced to traipse through after security are inclined to make you spend, certainly not with me or anyone I know. After the invariably long, often irri-

Can community ban lets? Last week we held our community AGM. On the published agenda was the question: should we allow touristic lets, YES or NO? We heard arguments from both sides and the item was put to the vote and the result was NO. Some of those who voted YES became upset and said they did not accept the vote. Then our administrator said that we had been too hasty in our decision and that in a month, we should bring the item back at an extraordinary general meeting, even though we had more than three weeks notice that this was a agenda item. Unless the community’s original Statutes state that tourist rentals are prohibited, or may be prohibited by majority vote, the community does not have the legal power to prohibit such rentals. Are you a psychopath? Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AFTER 30 odd years of being together and three years of her tidying up my articles, I am proud to announce Mrs S today officially became Mrs Grumpy after nearly starting World War Three in the post office. Well, a very English, Berkshire brought up version of a world war. So here’s why Mrs Grumpy kicked off and how she did it. She wanted to pay an electric bill - not even ours I might add. Endesa was mobbed so we decided to go to the post office where there was the standard one person serving and there was just one person being served. Mrs S was next to be served. After 15 minutes waiting and a bit of eyebrow raising exchange with the man who was now next to be served after Mrs S, Patti felt she had no choice but to begin the ‘tut’ combined with a ‘huff’ combination. This is the standard British way of signalling one’s discontent to anyone who might be interested. After this elicited no response whatsoever from the lady being served or from the woman serving her, Patti went full blown into the demonic waving of the said electric bill swiftly followed by the adoption of the classic
war pose - hands on hips whilst continuing to tut and huff - this is no mean feat! What was really annoying was that the customer was filling out forms and putting addresses on envelopes and, of course, what she should have done was go to one side to do that so other people could be served, and then come back when her admin was completed. I personally never understand why people don’t speak up - I would have said, ‘excuse me love - pop over there and do that,’ but Mrs S seemingly prefers the mime method of communication. The bottom line is no-one took any notice of my wife’s valiant attempts to move things along, even though the fellow Brit behind her had joined in the huffing and tutting therefore making a two pronged attack. So 30 minutes later, with a queue now snaking out of the door, our friend’s electric bill was duly paid and Mrs S was feeling murderous. Whilst I talked her down in the car we decided that people here in Spain who work in banks, post offices, utility companies etc must have to undergo a psychological evaluation before they are taken on to ensure they are a psychopath. That’s the only sure way of maintaining the lack of empathy, lack of guilt and lack of eye contact. It’s an art - shallow emotional response traits found in all these workers plus in all psychopaths. mikesenker@gmail.com

Though Swiss and so landlocked, the founders conceived that they could and would manufacture trusted maritime chronometers. By the 1870’s more than 50 navies and global trading fleets were esteemed customers of the Swiss manufacturer. Ulysse-Nardin supplied both Imperial Navies, Russia and Japan, in the Russo Japanese war of 1905. In modern times the maritime heritage of innovation horological development lives on. Ulysse-Nardin’s most recent spectacular, launched just two weeks ago, is the Free Floating Executive Tourbillon ‘Free Wheel.’ The ‘Free Wheel’ turns the traditional watch inside out displaying the brand new movement UN-176 to the eye. Beneath a box domed sapphire glass the Free Floating components appear to defy gravity, the dial’s tourbillon bridges and the seven-day power reserve indicator at four o’clock which are boomerang shaped, look like they are floating, as do the elegant drive trains and the hour and minute indicators. The case back is of sapphire too, however there is nothing to see. Where traditional watches would show components here, all the extraordinary components are visible on

Firstly, thank you for the TV emails, I love reading them and will try to get around to looking at all of your suggestions. Just for the record and in particular in reply to Susan447 in Costa Blanca North, no the picture isn’t me, I think it’s an emoji-typething… Secondly, thank you to new pals Pam and John who I met in Gibraltar, via a much delayed flight to the UK and my lovely other half, for the email about their viewing habits, more on that below and finally, thank you to my wonderful parents who celebrate 50 years of marriage this week, love to you both. How are you getting on watching the Bodyguard and Vanity Fair? They are both grabbing the ratings back in the UK. I’m still not convinced about Vanity, but the Bodyguard is an absolute winner. Told you it would be. A sure sign that Christmas can’t be too far away (yes, Christmas, not The Holidays, we don’t live in Florida) is the start of Strictly Come Dancing, or Strictly as we will call it. I say start, more of a limp into the new season last weekend and then a two week break. Strictonites will love it, I like the music, but

GOGGLEBOX: A few new faces as well as some of the regulars. let’s wait and see if the dancing is up to scratch. Not necessarily connecting to Christmas, Gogglebox is back on Channel 4, Fridays and via catch up. There are a few new faces but I’m pleased to say some of the regulars remain. I’m really pleased that Giles, Mary and their wonderful thatched cottage are back -
wouldn’t you just love to see around the rest of their home, rather than just their TV corner - can you imagine what their taste in pillows and throws is like? The two London based all-about-town girls seem to be fun, but maybe they should watch a little bit more TV and eat a little bit less popcorn, just a thought? Whilst we are in Goggle-
land, where did Channel 4 find the two friends from South Shields, you know, fake tan, portrait of The Queen and statue of The Madonna all in the same room? You might remember that my brother lives on the north east coast in Shields and he doesn’t have any sort of tan or any regal pictures. I will come back to you on the statue point, need to be careful on that one. I need to mention X Factor. Sorry, but I do. Did you see Robbie steal Andy’s thunder and self promote his own song? I’m a Robbie fan, but he didn’t need to belt out Angels and push Andy to the side. We know Mr Williams is amazing, but surely the contestant should have been given centre stage? So, to Pam and John’s TV choices. It’s probably Pam’s choice if I’m honest, but what choices they are. You will need to hunt down Succession, probably via a Dish or something similar. This is a US drama focused on the Roy family and their media empire. Jerry Hall should look away at this point. Fans of James Patterson’s Murder Games should look out for Instinct, again via satellite. Expect a gritty police drama which focuses on being realistic and which gets procedure and process spot on. WHILE most sources claim that gluten is safe for everyone except those who have coeliac disease, some health experts believe it is harmful for most people. And while everybody seems to be talking about it, do we really know what gluten is and how it can affect our health. It is actually a family of proteins found in grains like wheat, rye, spelt and barley. Of all of these grains, wheat is the most commonly consumed. The two main proteins in gluten are glutenin and gliadin. The latter is responsible for most of the negative health effects. When flour is mixed with water, the gluten proteins form a sticky network that has a glue-like consistency. This makes the dough elastic, and gives bread the ability to rise when baked. It also provides a chewy, satisfying texture. It’s not surprising then that the name glu-ten is derived from this glue-like property of wet dough. Most people tolerate gluten,

What’s the problem with gluten?
INTOLERANT: Wheat is the most commonly consumed grain. but it can cause problems for people with certain health conditions, including coeliac

disease, gluten sensitivity and wheat allergy among others.
Coeliac disease, (also spelled as celiac), is the most severe form of gluten intoler-
ance and affects less than 1 per cent of the population. It is an auto-immune disorder,
and involves the body treating gluten as a foreign invader. The immune system attacks the gluten, as well as the lining of the gut. This in turn damages the gut wall, and may cause nutrient deficiencies, such as anaemia, severe digestive issues and an increased risk of other diseases. The most common symptoms of coeliac disease are digestive discomfort, tissue damage in the small intestines, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, tiredness, skin rashes, depression, weight loss and foul-smelling faeces. However, some people with coeliac disease do not have digestive symptoms, but may have other symptoms like tiredness or anaemia, making it harder to diagnose. There are many people who do not test positive for coeliac disease, but still react negatively to gluten, a condition called non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Some experts believe this isn’t a real condition. They think the adverse effects are imaginary or caused by substances other than gluten.

MOTRIL: Juan Zelada and band on stage. THE Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Motril carries out various charitable events throughout the year with the aim of raising funds, and on Saturday, is hosting a concert by singer Juan Zelada. Although Spanish by birth this singer and keyboard player studied at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts winning praise from Paul McCart-
ney and then moved to London, forming his own band which also saw him backing Amy Winehouse in her Back to Black tour. Following this, he released a single and then his first album, won the European Border Breakers Award at the Eurosonic Fest in the Netherlands and toured much of South America, returning to Spain in 2014 to release his next album Back on Track which gained him a new Spanish audience. His latest collaboration was with Spanish artist BEBE and his music is a cross of soul, blues and rock. Tickets for the concert which starts at 9.30pm in the Mirador de Playa Granada cost €30, including a free drink, are on sale from the venue or in the AECC HQ in Motril.

This week I want to discuss micro-minerals, these minerals have less than a five gram presence in the average human body. Iron: Is the most abundant micro-mineral and is needed in red blood cells that transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the body. Meat, fish, poultry and enriched cereals and grains are the main sources. Copper: Is needed for the absorption of iron and the production of melanin to protect the skin from sunburn. Nuts, seeds and seafood are good sources. Zinc: Is required to produce RNA and DNA (the genetic material in the body’s cells) and aid the immune system and wound healing. Sources include; oysters, red meat and whole grains. Iodine: Used to produce thyroxine which regulates human metabolism. Consumption of iodised salt, prawns, tuna will fulfil dietary requirement. Fluoride: Protects the teeth by making the enamel more able to resist tooth decay. The best source is fluoridated tap water consumed by an expectant mother

Spanish greenorange chicken
SEASONAL: Orange chicken. from day one of pregnancy, this will confer these benefits to the child. I will discuss the other four next week. This week’s recipe is seasonal, using a fruit that is normally discarded now marmalade is no longer fashionable. It is the unripe and bitter Seville orange which is sweet when green. Spanish Green-Orange Chicken Serves 4 4 chicken breast halves, no skin, cubed 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped
4 large garlic cloves, chopped 1 cup dry white wine 2 bitter orange tree leaves, torn 1 large can tomatoes 1 chicken stock cube, crumbled 6 mushrooms, sliced Zest and juice of two whole green, Seville oranges Salt and black pepper, to taste 1. Place chicken and olive oil in a pan. 2. Fry the chicken on a medium heat until sealed on all sides. 3. Add the onion and fry for two minutes, stirring constantly. 4. Add the garlic and stir for another minute. 5. Add the wine and orange tree leaves, simmer until the odour of alcohol has disappeared. 6. Add the tomatoes, their juice, the chicken stock cube and stir until the stock has dissolved. 7. Continue to simmer until the sauce has reduced by about a third. 8. Add the mushrooms and simmer for 10 minutes more. 9. Add the zest and juice from the bitter oranges, stir, take off the heat. 10. Season.

The majority of deaths caused by DIY accidents are directly linked to the use of a ladder. It is reported 50 people are fatally injured

hicles - a sleeping environment, mobile office, living room and entertainment space - which all reimagine the way people travel. According to Volvo, the 360c represents a potentially lucrative competitor to short-haul air travel, focusing on shorter routes where the distance between origin and destina-
tion is around 300 kilometres. For example, within the United States over 740 million travellers embarked on domestic flights last year and America’s domestic air travel industry is worth billions of dollars in revenue. Several busy domestic air routes, such as New York to Washington DC, Houston to Dallas and Los Angeles to San Diego, are more time-consuming by air than by car when including things such as travel to the airport, security checks and waiting times. “Domestic air travel sounds great when you buy your ticket, but it really isn’t. The 360c represents what could be a whole new take on the industry,”
said Mårten Levenstam, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Volvo Cars. “The sleeping cabin allows you to enjoy premium comfort and peaceful travel through the night and wake up refreshed at your destination. It could enable us to compete with the world’s leading aircraft makers.” “When the Wright brothers took to the skies in 1903, they did not have a clue about what modern air travel would look like,” said Mårten Levenstam. “We do not know what the future of autonomous drive will hold, but it will have a profound impact on how people travel, how we design our cities and how we use infrastructure.”

and putting it through its first few bends Stefan commented that: “The feeling at the wheel of the new SEAT Tarraco is impressive. It’s very dynamic and makes you feel safe at the same time.” The car can seat up to seven passengers and has a 760-litre luggage compartment. It gives the driver ‘a great feeling of size and spaciousness,’ added the engineer. To see how it fares away from the tarmac Stefan headed for an off-road course prior to its international presentation. He said: “It handles rocky mountainous terrain with a slope of up to 70 per cent with ease,” while driving down a very steep incline. “Its all-wheel drive seems to have no limits. Right now the car is braking by itself,” adds Stefan. Next he threw the Tarraco round some very tight curves to see how it handled. “It has been designed to successfully tackle lateral tilts of 85 per cent. “On this kind of terrain it conveys a feeling of sturdiness and safety,” says Stefan.

WHILE Spain basks in its victory over England last weekend, its clubs are gearing up for their first match after the international break. The window between domestic games has allowed a gust of gossip to blow and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos believes teammate Luka Modric deserves to beat Cristiano Ronaldo to FIFA’s Best Men’s Player award. It is also believed that Uruguayan defender Jose Luis Rodriguez, 21, is close to signing for Real. Los Blancos will face Athletic Bilbao in the late kickoff on Saturday hoping to continue their impressive unbeaten start and keep the pressure on league leaders Barcelona. Meanwhile, Girona have accepted a proposal to play a regular-season game against Barcelona in the United States as part of the promotion of the league there. The first El Clasico of the season will see Barcelona host Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on October 28, as recently
confirmed by La Liga president Javier Tabas. Before that though, Barca will travel to eighth placed Real Sociedad on Saturday. Sevilla has suffered a blow as France international Maxime Gonalons is expected to miss at least six weeks of action after breaking his leg in training. Great North Run: Farah storms to fifth win BRITAIN’S Mo Farah won a record fifth Great North Run on Sunday in Newcastle. Farah clocked 59 minutes and 26 seconds for his fifth win in a row in the race, with New Zealand’s Jake Robertson 31 seconds back in second. Farah narrowly missed out on his half marathon personal best - which he set in winning his second title in 2015 - after fading inside the final 200 metres.
He had pulled well clear of Robertson with about two miles to go, and Belgium’s Bashir Abdi came home in third. WITH the international break last weekend, it is all quiet on the premier league front. But that has not stopped the gossip from swirling around in the meantime. Zinedine Zidane is eyeing a return to management and is reportedly a target for Manchester United should Jose Mourinho leave. Zidane guided Real Madrid to a third successive Champions League crown in May and recently said: “I am sure that I will coach again before long.” Mourinho is in an uncertain position with apparent bust ups with vice-chairman Ed Woodward and midfielder Paul Pogba, as well as two defeats already this season. Manchester United will travel to Watford on Saturday hoping to inject some momentum into their campaign. Former Chelsea midfield linchpin Claude Makelele believes it will be difficult for Blues manager Maurizio Sarri to win the title in his first season, but is expecting big things from the Italian in the long-term. In fact, Makelele believes Sarri “has the capacity to make history for Chelsea again.” Sarri arrived from Serie A side Napoli in the off-season and has overseen a flawless four wins on the bounce so far.
