Tourist boat in hash bust By Christophe De Chaume THE Guardia Civil has arrested five men in connection with the discovery of over 800 kilos of hashish hidden in a tourist boat in Caleta de Velez. Police Operation ‘Sarbo’ has led to the dismantling of a criminal organisation involved in the trafficking of large volumes of the drug into Spain. Investigations began after a tourist vessel was intercepted by the Maritime Rescue Service, which had three crew members on board. Five packages of hashish were immediately discovered, weighing around 177 kilos. However, once it had docked in the port, the boat was thoroughly searched by the Guardia Civil and a secret extra compartment was found. A haul of 15 other packages of hashish were seized, weighing 680 kilos. Further police inquiries and evidence gathering led to the arrest of two other members of the criminal group.

THE main beaches of Torrox have become the first on the Costa del Sol to include no smoking areas. It is an initiative promoted by the local council with the aim of promoting healthy living among locals and tourists. Mayor Oscar Medina announced that a 300-metre strip will be marked between the beaches of Ferrara, El Morche and El Peñoncillo. AXARQUIA’S fishermen are suffering severe financial losses following the decision by the regional government of Andalucia to ban the collection of shellfish since July 26. The ban was introduced following the discovery of high levels of dangerous toxins in the shellfish. However, 126 fishing boats would normally be operating in the waters, employing around 400 people, and they are becoming increasingly desperate. The situation has caused losses of €10,000 per boat so far, a total of about €1.3 million, according to Mari Carmen Navas, President of the Caleta de Velez Fishermen’s Association. “The summer months represent between 30 and 40 per cent of our turnover for the

year,” said Mr Navas. “We ask the authorities to allocate some aid as happened in 2014 when a similar ban occurred due to toxins.” Axarquia is normally the leading port for shellfishing in the province, followed by Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona. The ban includes muscles, clams and other shellfish and Mr Navas had a recent meeting with the Delegate of the Ministry for Fisheries to discuss the fishermen’s concerns. However, he was informed that the ban would be staying in place for at least two more weeks, due to the continuing high levels of toxins. The regional government is monitoring the situation and considering the fishermen’s request for financial compensation.

Rape data Attack ‘every six hours’ By Joe Gerrard ONE woman is raped somewhere in Spain every six hours on average, according to a report from the country’s Interior Ministry. There were a total of 788 rapes in Spain from January to June this year. The Inter i o r M i n i s t r y ’s r e p o r t showed the rate was a 28.5 per cent increase on levels seen at the same time last year. The total number of complaints of sexual assaults more broadly stood at 5,731 for the first half of this year. The same figure for January to June last year was 5,083, an increase of almost 13 per cent. Yolanda Besteiro, Chairperson of the Federation of the Progressive Women of Spain, said Spanish society

School funds AUTHORITIES in Rincon de la Victoria have earmarked almost €34,000 to invest in improvements to six schools in the town following an agreement between councillors. Seeing red

THIS coming Wednesday sees the start of one of Spain’s best-known and most unusual fiestas, the La Tomatina in the Valencia region. Revellers descend on the town of Buñol on the last Wednesday of August every year for the festival which involves throwing tomatoes at other participants. It is now so popular that since 2013 it has been ticketed. It was estimated that about 145,000 kilos of tomatoes were lobbed by attendees in 2015’s edition of the fiesta. La Tomatina began in 1945 when young people at the Giants and Big-Heads figure parade in Buñol caused a musician to fall over.

The musician flew into a fit of rage and spectators soon joined in. There was a market stall with fruit and vegetables in the area and those nearby raided it and began pelting other festival goers before police broke them up. The following year young people returned to the festival but this time they brought their own tomatoes from home. Authorities tried to crack down and in the early 1950’s it was banned altogether. This did not deter spectators who risked being arrested by taking part. Within years officials relented and the event has now become one of the best known events in Spain.

Beach funds VELEZ-MALAGA’S council has drawn up plans for emergency situations on around 22 kilometres of its coastline. The local a u t h o r i t y ’s beach spokesperson, Jesus Perez Atencia, unveiled the scheme which is due to come into force next month, as part of a broader move to improve public safety.

Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer said it was an honour for the locality to host such a prestigious sporting event with so many world class cy-

clists involved. The cyclists will be on hand to meet and greet locals and tourists in the hours prior to the start of the race. “The events that we organise attract visitors from all over the world,” said Mr Ferrer. “This Vuelta will help to boost the local economy and generate employment.” There will be 35 Local Police on hand for the event, as well as 70 civil protection volunteers.

Gang war crackdown THE Guardia Civil has arrested eight men in connection with a gang war in Rincon de la Victoria. The men are allegedly members of two rival groups and are facing charges of kidnapping, torture, and violent robbery, among others. It is believed that one of the gangs captured on the street is a member of the rival gang, and threw him into their vehicle. According to the Guardia Civil, he was taken to an isolat-

ed area where he was tied to a street lamp, tortured and robbed. In retaliation, a member of the other gang was kidnapped and taken to a secret location where he was beaten, threatened with a knife to his neck, and robbed. A police investigation was able to identify and arrest eight members of the gangs, who were all aged between 16 and 25 and residents of Rincon de la Victoria.

Visitors flock THE number of people who have visited the Valley of The Fallen mausoleum has soared following an announcement that former dictator Francisco Franco’s remains would be exhumed from it. A total of 38,269 people went to the site last month, up from 23,135 in June this year and 25,532 in July 2017 according to Spain’s heritage authority. Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, announced the exhumation plans shortly after taking power in June. “After 40 years this debate has led us to a very simple conclusion, Spain cannot allow symbols which divide the Spanish,” Sanchez said. Supporters of the former dictator and his descendants have voiced opposition to the plans. Franco’s family said they would not give their permission for the exhumation. Several recent visitors to the site told Spanish media about their reasons for making the trip to the site near Madrid. Antonio Nevado, a 22-year-old law student and critic of Franco’s regime, said “morbid curiosity” had driven him to go. He added he thought the dictator’s remains should stay at the mausoleum.

“This is the country’s heritage and it should be respected,” he said. Miguel Pintor, 62, from Madrid, said he was angered by the government’s plans. “I don’t think it hurts anyone. The dead should be left in peace,” Pintor said. Others thought the government had made the right call. Christian Espert, a 30-year-old soldier from Valencia, said the move should take place because the site hurt the feelings of many Spanish people. Javier Botia, 40, from Murcia, said he did not sympathise with Franco and felt now was the time to make the move. “I feel conflicting emotions, because on the one hand it is a place that symbolises much suffering, but it also has a lot of history. “One must know the bad side of history so as not to repeat it,” he said. General Francisco Franco took power in 1939 following the victory of his rebel nationalist forces in the Civil War. The Valley of the Fallen was built by Republican and other political prisoners as a mausoleum for those who died in the conflict.

OUR VIEW Welcome September WE are now nearing the end of August madness where the streets of holiday destinations are clogged with visitors and many main roads look like the M25 on a very bad day. There are two real options for expatriate residents in Spain and both seem quite popular, either pack up your bags and go back ‘home’ for a month or two or remain, moan a bit and put up with it. There is however no doubt that the influx of visitors is good for the economy and certainly gives a number of people from all over Europe the chance to have some work in areas which otherwise would be bare of opportunities. Whilst everyone enjoys the warm weather, this year has seen a number of very hot days and for those who are travelling, the stress factors at airports have gone up considerably and this has been made even worse by regular strikes of airline pilots, long queues at immigration and even the breakdown of electronic display boards. What is important however is that despite all of the aggravation most people have got where they wanted to go eventually and more importantly in one piece. Many of the charities that assist the elderly closed their coffee mornings for August, but they continued to raise funds and to assist those in real need, but come September the charity shops will reopen and people will meet up again to chat with new friends. Loneliness can be a terrible thing especially in a foreign country, so congratulations to all those who have made it through August and are looking forward to a return to normality.

Irrigation device makes splash ANTONIO RICO VILLENA has patented more than 26 construction-related inventions over the course of his career. In a testament to his talent and practical ability, all of them are being manufactured and are in use. The most well-known of these inventions is probably the concrete separator, which is designed to ensure that steel reinforcements in buildings are adequately secured in concrete slabs. However, Antonio and his son Ernesto, have now come up with a revolutionary drip irrigation system through their company Creacciona. Drip irrigation is believed to be far more effective and efficient than other methods, and involves far less water being used.

Antonio and Ernesto’s solution is called Deep Drop and the former said: “Our system goes underground, depositing both water and fertilizer in the sub-

soil thereby maximising its efficiency and avoiding losses caused by evaporation.” The system has been patented by Antonio and involves a new device which makes it possible to check that the water is circulating correctly, while also preventing the poisoning of wildlife.

A BOY aged about three years old, has been rushed to hospital by helicopter in a serious condition after falling into a private swimming pool in the south of Spain. The family found the child in the swimming pool at a farmhouse in Loma del Gato, in the town of Sexitano, Almuñecar. Paramedics, Local Police and the Guardia Civil called in the air ambulance to fly the child from the Francisco Bonet sports stadium to the general hospital. The condition of the child is described as ‘serious.’

Bombers sent near to Alaska LONG-RANGE bombers armed with nuclear missiles have been deployed in the Chukotka region of Russia’s Far East, putting them well within reach of Alaska in the United States. A pair of Tu-160 supersonic bombers arrived near the Russian side of the Bering Strait amidst the country’s military build up on its frontiers. It was the first time that the planes have been deployed there.

Voter travel requests RUSSIAN travel agents have reportedly received requests from local election authorities for information about customers planning on travelling during local elections this autumn. Irina Tyurina, a Russian Tourism Union spokesperson, said officials had asked for names and registration locations, with the country’s Central Election Commission planning to clarify the matter.

Politician graft claims A PROMINENT Russian opposition figure has claimed that the speaker of the country’s parliament has covered up millions of dollars by keeping them as assets in his mother’s name. Alexei Navalny alleged in a video report that State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin had put an almost €3 million Moscow apartment in his mother’s name. Volodin has yet to respond to the allegations.

Deserted station A BLOGGER from Moscow’s posts online documenting masses of passports and other personal paperwork in an abandoned police station has sparked an investigation into negligence. Lana Sator said the station was an ‘utterly dull’ and ‘nondescript’ building and her pictures showed documents strewn throughout the office. Russia’s Investigative Committee has since announced an inspection of the site which they said was an old Federal Migration Service office.

STAT OF WEEK National job stats THERE are around 1.3 million less jobs in Spain than there were at the onset of the financial crisis in 2008, according to government figures. There were about 49,500 less in Castellon and 25,800 less in Orense. The number of those in work has grown in the Balearic Islands, Malaga Province, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Guadalajara. They saw increases of 45,700, 28,300, 18,000 and 12,200 respectively since the second quarter of 2008.

Deficit talks begin SPANISH government ministers are set to meet tomorrow (Friday) in a bid to reach an agreement on spending and debt proposals for 2019 to 2021. The Council of Ministers is attempting to chart a course of deficit reduction as part of a path to financial stability. Their proposals will be tabled before the Congress of Deputies, Spain’s Parliament, once agreement between ministers has been reached. Congress voted down previous spending plans last month. A total of 88 Deputies, including those from the governing leftleaning Partido Socialista (PSOE), voted in favour. There were 173 votes against from the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and a handful of regionalist parties. The leftist anti-austerity Unidos Podemos group and some Catalan and Valencian parties abstained. Tomorrow’s meeting will be the first Council of Ministers session since the last one on August 3 before the summer recess began.

SPANISH financial firm Bankia loaned around €180 million to house building projects in the country between January and June this year, according to company data. The figure comes as the bank had been restricted in operating in markets such as property and development financing as part of bailout conditions from the recession. Bankia said its development financing arm was one of the main parts of the business set to grow in the coming years due to home building picking up.

Company earnings THE turnover of Spanish firms has risen by 4.9 per cent since last June in comparison to the same time last year according to the National Institute for Statistic’s (INE) Business Figures Index.

Age averages SLUMP: The sector is not growing as quickly. OUTPUT in the construction sector grew by some 1.8 per cent in Spain in June compared to 2017, a fall from 4.6 per cent in year-onyear growth in May. The Eurostat figures come as data for the European Union (EU) showed a mixed picture for the industry in different member states. Output fell in Spain by around 0.3 per cent in month-on-month terms from May to June, the second fall so far this year. Activity in the sector across the

bloc grew by 0.6 per cent in month-on-month terms in June compared to May. There was a growth of 1.2 per cent in the EU in May compared to the previous April, meaning there has been three months of uninterrupted growth in construction. Hungary saw the largest increase in construction activity in June compared to May at 7.2 per cent. Slovenia saw the largest fall at 5 per cent.

PROPERTIES in provincial capitals were aged 45 years on average if they were for sale and 44 for rent and the figure stood at 72 and 69 respectively in Barcelona, according to industry figures.

Web launch GERMAN supermarket chain Lidl has launched an online store to sell its own brand products in the Madrid region as part of a pilot scheme which could be rolled out throughout Spain if successful.

Boat rents make waves THE amount of people holidaying on rented boats in Spain was up 42 per cent during the first six months of this year compared to 2017, according to industry data. A total of 3,256 recreational vessels were registered in Spain during the same period, with 1,049 for rental use. The number is expected to be higher than

the total of 1,613 registered during the whole of 2017, according to forecasts from Spain’s General Directorate of the Merchant Navy. Current trends showed the boat rental market had grown by between 15 and 20 per cent annually in recent years. Turnover is roughly around €320 million a year in Spain.

Are our values being threatened? LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I THINK the so-called ‘snowflakes’ and ‘do gooders’ of our societies are falling hook, line, and naive sinker, into the hands of those whose sole aim is to provoke as much racial hatred and cultural discrimination as possible. All their well-intentioned appeasement of ethnic minorities and promotion of so-called ‘diversity’ is actually having an opposite affect and is in fact managing to raise public resentment and social disharmony to unprecedented and dangerous levels. In my opinion the growth of reversed racism is becoming the biggest weapon the enemies of peaceful integration and social equality possess. This past week we’ve seen some real goodies. Comedian Jack Whitehall was chastised for being cast as the first gay Disney character, because he is in fact heterosexual! (He’s also an actor of course!). Mazz Murray, talented daughter of a dear friend of mine, was barred from performing a song from Dreamgirls at the Albert Hall, because she is white and the song is from an ‘African American’ musical. A while ago the BBC (who else) almost unbe-

A recent lawsuit claimed that YouTube cancelled job interviews with people who were not female black or Hispanic. Another example that caught my eye last week was the casting of a black girl in the role

of Joan of Arc in an upcoming movie. This did make me think what sort of an outcry there would be if it was decided to cast a white man in the leading role of a movie about Nelson Mandela! These subversive agitators also level accusations of racism and Islamophobia at anyone who endeavours to speak out in the name of common

sense and will try to crush our rights to the freedom of speech at every opportunity. All this creates one result only. Anger and resentment. It’s high time the snowflakes were brought to realise that they are being blatantly manipulated by these people, whose only ambition is to spread disruption and division. This small minority don’t want social harmony, they want victory and revenge, and are prepared to use any means available to achieve it; including the purloined assistance of those who naively think they are righting the wrongs of history and inequality. It’s high time the politicians pulled their heads out from the sands of denial and faced up to the problems these people are creating. If they carry on living in their bubbles of privilege and fantasy, and continue to show their appalling lack of courage, common sense and leadership in these matters, the man in the street will, out of pure frustration, decide to act themselves. TECH FOR THE TIMID WHEN I make a cup of tea, my new internet kettle reports it to Reykjavik. Neighbours were able to watch their house being burgled on their smartphone, and recent guests insisted we listen to their baby gurgling back home thanks to an online monitor. Oh what joy. I haven’t yet succumbed to buying an internet-connected fridge which will let me know when the Nutella’s running low (horror of horrors), but it’s coming. A new survey says the average Western home now has six connected devices, rising fast. What’s most worrying about this trend is not just that if the internet goes down, life as we know it is over, but how much stuff is connecting without us realising it. Take that new kettle of mine (but preferably not given its outrageous price). Quite reasonably the manufacturer hopes to tap the usage data it sends to its Icelandic datacentre, to improve the product so that the next iteration will be even better. Quite how simply boiling water can

WI-FI KETTLE: Click for a cuppa. be improved might be a moot point, but never mind the detail. Worryingly, do I know what information it is actually sending back every time I make a cuppa? That’s not an unreasonable concern, given those notorious Samsung TVs which were collecting their viewers’ conversations a while back. Amazon’s Alexa recently made the news by eavesdropping on an

owner and sending the recording to a contact in Seattle. And Google finally admitted last year that its Home Mini assistant had indeed been logging and sending recordings from some owners. At the height of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a widelywatched interview with Mark Zuckerberg showed his personal laptop in the background - with its webcam covered by tape. And no,

it’s simply naïve to think that if anyone is snooping through your webcam, its light will come on. Real hackers just ain’t that incompetent. The so-called Internet of Things (or IoT to we sad acronymphiles) is entering every facet of our existence, and with it come any number of benefits - and risks. The world currently has three billion smartphones, but will have 20 billion internet-connected devices just two years from now. Experts agree the security is not yet in place for this deluge of interconnectivity. Privacy is becoming quaintly old-fashioned, hackers are going into pizza-fuelled overdrive and security watchdogs are heading for the bunkers. Bottom line: beware what you buy if it says it’s connectable. Are we ready for everything we own to create individual mini-surveillance states which would have made the Stasi proud? I need a cup of tea to ponder it all. Standby Reykjavik.

Fatal flaw WHY would anyone want an internet-connected kettle? Let me count the ways. Imagine how much time you save not having to actually go to the kitchen to switch it on; the app is on your smartphone. Tell it to boil from your commute, or while snoozing in bed. The app shows how much water it has, how many cups it will make, how much energy you’re using, and how long it will take to boil. There’s a ‘Keep Warm’ feature which, you guessed it, keeps the water warm till you get there. The ‘Share’ feature lets you WhatsApp others to ask if they want a cuppa. All done remotely, brilliant. Except for one fatal flaw: you still have to walk to the kettle to fill it.

PRESIDENT Trump is a leader who has inspired renewed, worldwide respect for the US. He has demonstrated strong moral principles and diplomacy. History will judge him to have been an astute and canny politician whose altruism (a distinctive Trump characteristic) helped rescue an economy in dire straits. His understanding of the sensitive and complex nature of international relations is nothing less than amazing. His wisdom - likewise his economic vision of the future - is a guiding light to others. Future leaders will scrutinise his tweets attempting to comprehend that visionary, mercurial magnetism that is Trump. An outstanding statesman who is vastly undervalued in these benighted times. Yes. Banality, or more simply the ordinary needs of getting ready for work or just this day’s demands occupies us. Routine, a breakfast or the main meal of the day, friends, family and hobbies remain at the centre and core of most lives. Heroic or ordinary, we all dress in much the same way. Fashionistas will of course claim otherwise. Their string shopping bag will be iridescent and will cost many times what you or I may be willing to pay for what is really just a bag for putting our shopping in. Their watches will be limited editions made of rare and precious materials. The cost of just servicing a high end mechanical watch can be as little as €2,000 each time. A collection of such watches is not just a labour of love or an investment; this hobby will need a commitment of more than just time! Even the most ordinary day may be punctuated with a heart stopping moment, when you really do feel the breath of your own

School will be calling his children to attend to their studies, so off to the shops they will go for shoes and all the paraphernalia of ‘Back to School.’

Would you like a receipt? Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I READ this week, that after 23 school shootings in 2018, the US government has taken major steps to make some changes. What are they, you may ask? Well, at last they have banned something. No, not guns they have banned plastic straws! Yeah I know the environment is suffering terribly from single use plastic products but come on, for goodness sake, do something about the killing of your kids. I’m going to let you into a little secret about me. My answer to the question, ‘would you like a receipt’ is based on absolutely nothing and changes all the time. Obviously if I’m buying some electrical good or an item of clothing the answer is going to be ‘yes’ but for everything else the answer depends on... Well, nothing really. On the subject of buying stuff what is it with these new plastic pen and touch screen thingies in stores and banks? It’s impossible to get anything that remotely looks like my signature. It just doesn’t feel right when you try and sign your name. Why not just use pin numbers?

I had an interesting situation this week. I was on my way home and I got a one word message from Mrs S. All it said was ‘chocolate’ so I stopped at the nearest supermarket which just happened to be Iceland. I did a quick in and out and grabbed a few assorted bars of chocolate, paid and interesting enough, in this instance, I stuck the receipt in the bag. Anyway, we were sitting down watching TV and decided it was ‘chocolate o’clock’ so Mrs S went and got a bar. She then asked me if I had eaten some on the way home. Her reason for asking was that it had been opened and a few squares were missing. Now what do you do? Definitely not eat it! Take it back? Well it only cost a euro but then again it’s not right so we decided to return it back to the supermarket. When we took it back the manager just said sorry and immediately changed it for us. He then offered up an amazing bit of information that this apparently happens all the time all round the store. Every day they find empty or opened and half eaten packets of products - sandwiches, crisps, sweets, drinks etc. But, it’s very hard to prove once someone has left the store as the evidence has been eaten. So my advice is have a good look at your stuff as you pick it up. mikesenker@gmail.com

If my mathematics are correct there is a minor error. I agree that the xe.com site shows a GBP/EUR exchange rate low of 1.12014 and a high of 1.15801. The low figure of 1.12014 was on March 6/7 which could be considered outside the ‘last three months.’ However, a change from a low of 1.1204 to a high of 1.15801 is not 0.32 per cent, but rather 3.2 per cent. I trust whoever calculated the 0.32 per cent is not involved in currency exchange! I also found it interesting that no mention was made of the possible impact of upcoming Brexit on the 100 per cent year-on-year purchase increase, as opposed to merely a (relatively) stable currency. Brits double their money The airlines need to stop allowing drunks on AS a follow up to Jenny’s letter on the above: We have just purchased a house in Torrevieja to be used as a second/holiday home, so I’d also like to comment on a Ryanair flight that I was recently on between Bournemouth and Alicante two months ago. The flight was almost full, and amongst the passengers were several groups of stag and hen parties, but one group of stags were a nightmare from stepping aboard to stepping off. They were very drunk before they had even sat down, they were passing bottles of spirits between themselves, spilling it everywhere and they were swearing. The stewards did nothing to stop this! I didn’t think you were allowed to drink ‘Duty Free’ alcohol on any plane, but I guess on Ryanair they are the exception to the rule. I should feel safe on any form of public transport be in land, sea or air, but on this flight I didn’t.

A visit to the theatre

PLANE DRUNK: Not an enjoyable experience. I am also a recovering alcoholic, so having to sit amongst drink being spilt everywhere is not very good for my sobriety, I have no issue with people drinking, but I do not expect to be put in a position where I clearly have no option but to put up with it. THIS weekend I was fortunate enough to go to the Cardenal Belluga Theatre, one of our local theatres on the Costa Blanca to see ‘From a Jack to a King’ by The Stagestruck Theatre group. On arrival at the theatre I was offered a complimentary drink, a programme and shown to my seat. Shortly after this the lights were dimmed and we were informed to sit back and enjoy. Well in no time at all we were transformed back to an Eastend pub in London to the year 1967 as the actors performed their parts impeccably. It seemed in no time at all the first half was over with an excellent story line consisting of good singing and laugh out loud gags galore. Then came the announcement there would be short interval and the raffle would be drawn, I was unlucky and didn’t win but felt I was already a winner for enjoying the first half performance. The lights again dimmed, opening up to a scene from the recently renovated pub, three years later, as the story unfolded, keeping me laughing with the gags and entertained with the story line. The second half drew to a close with a standing ovation from the audience. After the finale walk down the Director Leigh Humphries stepped forward to thank the audience, the actors, the back stage staff, the sound and lighting crew for their support and commitment to the group. She then called forward a representative from The Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association and presented them with a cheque for €3,500. Vitamin B10: PABA Vitamin B10 was referred to as Vitamin R, but it has recently been renamed to PABA. Vitamin B11: Salicylic Acid This supposedly does not exist, but its deficiency can lead to anaemia, tiredness and a lack of appetite, some unexpected changes to the mucous membranes, and some changes in the small intestine. It is necessary for DNA and RNA synthesis. All of the above can help the human body to synthesise this vitamin: Vitamin B12: Folic Acid Necessary for the production of red blood cells in the human body. Deficiency results in anaemia, producing extreme tiredness, lack of energy, a sore and red tongue, mouth ulcers and in some cases, psychological problems. It also helps form the neural tube in unborn babies, a deficiency during pregnancy may result

Juice from one large lemon. 2 teaspoons freshly ground black peppercorns. 1 tablespoon olive oil. 12 large prawns, shelled and deveined. 1 whole lemon, zested and juiced. 2 medium sized onions, sliced. 2 whole garlic cloves, chopped. 1 whole yellow pepper, seeded and chopped. 1 cup white vermouth.

2 cubes of fish stock, crumbled 1 pinch of saffron threads. Salt, to taste. 4 dried lemon leaves. 4 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 4 tablespoons water. Marinate tuna and prawns with lemon juice and black pepper for 10 minutes in the fridge. While the tuna is marinating, prepare the sauce: Fry garlic, onion and the yellow pepper for 3-4 minutes. Add juice and zest from the second lemon, the fish stock, vermouth, saffron, lemon leaves and salt. Bring to simmer and thicken with the cornstarch and water mix. Preheat grill and grill the tuna on high heat for five minutes each side until cooked to each diner’s personal preference. Barbecuing is a good, if not better option, but 4 teaspoons of olive oil need to be added to the lemon juice/olive oil mix, to prevent it sticking. Repeat the same process for the prawns. Serve with sauce. Tip: Prawns need to be well prepared, they need to be shelled, then, using a sharp knife remove the intestine. Tip: The tuna can be pink or raw, the prawns must be cooked until opaque, to prevent food poisoning.

The August Classic Car Run ESPITE the heat of August, members of the CCC of A continue to enjoy their cars, the countryside and the camaraderie and social life that the Club inspires. This month, unperturbed by the heat, the regular monthly classic car run took place organised by club members Trevor Naylor and Martin Hall. The run started at Venta Peligrino, just above Marbella, and set off at 11.00am after the usual registration process fuelled by bacon sarnies and hot coffee! The route went past Ojen and down through Monda and Guaro, joining the main Coin to Alozaina road. Crews then turned off to Tolox and headed up to the marvellous Hotel Montana for more coffee and a chance to enjoy the marvellous views. From there it was on to Alozaina and the old country road to cross the Rio Grande (don’t you just love saying that, sounds like it came from John Wayne!). After that a Cava stop was provided, by the organisers, just outside of Coin, and thoroughly enjoyed despite the rather warm conditions. The route then headed towards Mijas, down past Entrerrios and

joined the old Camino de Coin, past Mijas golf course and then on to finish at Restaurante Palma Nova, just by the golf course there, and where a well deserved glass of chilled Cava awaited everyone. Around 50 people sat down to a most excellent lunch and all were very well looked after by the staff and kitchen of Palma Nova. No overheating problems were reported, at least not from the cars, although the crews themselves may have been running a little ‘over normal’! The CCCA Hog Roast In fact, the Restaurante Palma Nova will be the start venue for the Club’s Hog Roast taking place near Entrerrios this Friday. Cars and hungry members will meet there around 6.30pm to enjoy a refreshing drink before setting off for the secret location near Entrerrios. The Hog Roast will get under way around 7.30pm and there will be live music and entertainment provided for the evening. These social events are always well supported and enjoyed by many, allowing more time than usual to get together and relax over some good food and a glass of something cold.

Classic Car News:Classic Car Values Post Brexit There is some debate in the classic car world about what might happen to values after Brexit. Normally, I avoid any political comment but it is interesting to hear the views of the so-called ‘experts.’ Mike Brewer, the TV presenter and classic car dealer has been reported as saying he thinks values will rise because, at times of economic uncertainty, many people will switch their investments from traditional avenues to safer and more tangible things and classic cars have, especially in recent decades, performed very well in these times. Income from these cars is tax free but, just as important, one can get in them and enjoy so

much more at the same time as, hopefully, getting a good return. Certainly compared to the banks and, possibly at this time, property, this could well be true. However, it is certainly true that some classics have taken a bit of a tumble over the past year or so, but most see that as a ‘levelling’ or ‘realigning’ of some excessive value hikes over the past few years. We shall wait and see, but I’m still very happy to keep a decent collection of classics! Classics On TV For all us classic car enthusiasts there is a new TV programme coming soon to the ‘Dave’ channel called ‘Modern Wheels or Classic Steals.’ It will screen on Tuesday evenings, from September 11, and will be presented by London Motor Museum owner Elo King and current fast lady racing driver Rebecca Jackson. It will feature each week a ‘battle’ of classic car versus modern car which should be most interesting. I don’t know what are the criteria for judgement but the more classic cars we have on TV, the better it

is for us all! Ten years of the CCCA The Club makes it to the end of its first 10 successful years in early September and there will be several events to commemorate this amazing achievement. There will be more information on these
