Triathletes flee water as marine menaces surface

STUNG: A bank of jellyfish caused mayhem. THERE was a scene of chaos at Salobreña beach as nearly every single one of 150 triathletes got stung by jellyfish. Just six of the athletes taking part in the third Cross Triathlon, where competitors have to complete running, cycling and swimming courses, escaped unscathed when they launched themselves into the sea. GUARDIA CIVIL called to evict a squatter ended up arresting him for drug dealing. The officers had been called to a rural home in Almuñecar after the house’s owner had turned up only to find someone else living in it. Unable to enter her own home in Rio Seco she called police to report the matter. When Guardia Civil arrived and approached the house, they say that someone had apparently forced the locks to the entrance gate as well as the front door of the house. Funeral held HUNDREDS of mourners turned out for the funeral in Velez-Malaga for a 23-year-old whose body was found off the coast of Cadiz Province after he went missing at sea. The funeral for Fidel Jimenez Marin was attended by Antonio Morena Ferrer, the mayor of Velez-Malaga, and former mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla. The mass was held at the Church of San Juan Bautista before the 23-year-old’s remains were cremated. Locals from the town passed through the Veleta funeral home to offer their condolences to Fidel Jimenez and Montse Marin, the 23-year-old’s parents. They also paid their respects to the body. The funeral follows more than two weeks of searching for Jimenez Marin, who was washed out to sea while fishing with friends about eight kilometres off the town of Barbate. Juan Toro, a friend of the 23-year-old who was fishing with him on July 22, said he saw him floating face down and unconscious after falling in 16-metre-deep water. He tried to pull him out but currents swept him away. Toro was later able to identify Jimenez Marin’s body more than two weeks after the fall by the diving suit his friend had worn on the day of his disappearance. Jimenez Marin had moved to Barbate to pursue his passion for fishing.

Parents’ tribute By Matt Ford THE parents of an Irish girl who drowned in a Costa del Sol swimming pool have paid tribute to their ‘tiny Wonder Woman.’ It comes after four-year-old Georgia Anne Callan drowned at a rented villa on Calle San Joaquin, just off Marbella’s Golden Mile. The youngster from Ardclough, Co Kildare, is believed to have climbed out of a paddling pool before falling into the adult pool. One of the victim’s parents was with her at the time and well-placed sources said she was briefly distracted while talking with other adults who are believed to be friends. They are understood to have been coming to the end of a month-long family holiday when the tragedy struck. The alarm was raised at 10.30 in the morning on Saturday July 28, but medics were unable to resuscitate her.

TRAGEDY: Georgia Anne Callan died after falling into a swimming pool. Mums Emeline Callan and Jacqueline Russell said in a statement they are “devastated by her loss.” They added: “Georgia was our own tiny Wonder Woman.

“A happy, playful, brave, gentle and funny girl, she loved nothing more than making new friends and wearing princess dresses everywhere. “Georgia loved everyone,

and her pets were amongst her dearest friends. “She sought beauty, goodness and fun wherever she was. She brought immense joy to our lives and to the lives of everyone who knew her. “We love her deeply. We will miss her more than we can say. We are devastated by her loss. “We ask that you respect our privacy, and the privacy of our family and friends at this incredibly difficult and sad time.” The family thanked the police, medics, and Irish Embassy staff for ‘their professionalism, support and care.’ Georgia’s funeral took place last Friday and mourners were asked to ‘dress cheerfully’ in a bid to ensure her ‘bright, sparkling personality lives on.’ Spanish police have confirmed they are treating the death as accidental.

Streets in colour THIS is Barcelona, but not as you know it. Iakov Filimonov’s picture shows one of the city’s streets decked out in glorious colour bunting for its annual Fiesta Mayor de Gracia in 2015. This year’s edition kicked off yesterday (Wednesday). The festival, which includes concerts, dances and model displays, pays homage to the Catalan capital’s Gracia district. The area was once a town until Barcelona incorporated it in 1897. The fiesta has been used to assert the district’s identity since the early 19th century. Local monks chose to throw a festival on August 15, the day of the assumption of the Virgin Mary, after a

convent was demolished in 1812. When Gracia briefly became an independent entity with its own town hall in 1850 it adopted the celebration as an annual event. The decking of streets in a variety of multicoloured styles also began around this time. The festival took on a rebellious nature during the dictatorship of Francisco France who attempted to repress Catalan culture. Fiesta goers used it as a means to demonstrate against his regime. It began to fall out of fashion in the 1970’s until Cataluña’s regional government declared it a festival of national interest in 1997.

Theatre call RESIDENTS and businesses in Velez-Malaga are calling for the reopening of the Lope de Vega theatre, which has been closed since 1985. The town council bought it in 2015 for €500,000 and was given €1.2 million by the provincial government to refurbish it, but need another €1.8 million for the work.

Canyoning death Nerja street brawl A MAN was killed after he fell while practising the sport of canyoning in Orgiva (Granada). He was taking part in the second National Meeting of Women Canyoners when he suffered the accident in the barranco de Trevelez. Emergency services were alerted while the victim’s friends attempted to resuscitate the man. Firefighters, Guardia Civil and Local Police were all involved in the rescue attempt, with a mountain rescue team also called in

A STREET brawl between tourists and locals on the normally sleepy streets of Nerja has gone viral after a video was released on social media. Now police are investigating the events which took place in Calle Jaen after a complaint was made. The two-minute video, which was shot from a second floor window, shows half a dozen people shoving, kicking and punching each other amidst shouting,

while others try to separate the antagonists and cool heated tempers. Soon afterwards Local Police arrived on the scene to stop the altercation. Now the Guardia Civil is investigating the events, although at the time of going to press no arrests had been made. It is thought the incident involved three Dutch tourists and three Spaniards, and has shocked the town hall. It says it is a ‘totally isolated’ incident.

Story surfaces AN unpublished short story from American author Ernest Hemingway about life in Paris after the Second World War is set to be released for the first time. A Room on the Garden Side was written in 1956. The author, who spent much of his life in Spain as well as France, talks about his affection for both countries through the story’s narrator and main character, Robert. “I loved France and Spain next to my own country. I loved other countries too but the debt was paid and I thought that the account was closed, not knowing the accounts are never closed,” Robert says. The story has until now only been seen by a handful of scholars and academics. It sees characters debating ‘the dirty trade of war’ in one of Hemingway’s favourite haunts, the Paris Ritz hotel. Andrew F Gulli, an editor at Strand which is publishing the short story, said in a note introducing the work that Hemingway was paying homage to Paris in it. “Hemingway’s deep love for his favourite city as it just emerging from Nazi occupation is

on full display, as are the hallmarks of his prose,” Strand said. The author sent the story along with several others to his publisher Charles Scibner Jr and told him they were ‘a little shocking’ due to their themes of war. ‘Anyway, you can always publish them after I’m dead,’ he said in a note to Scribner. War and travel were prominent themes in many of Hemingway’s books. The Sun Also Rises, one of his first successes, centres on the protagonist Jake Barnes and his friends who journey to Pamplona to witness the Running of the Bulls. Hemingway lived in various places across Spain in the 1930’s. He travelled to Madrid in 1937 following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War the previous year to make The Spanish Earth, a documentary about the Republican war effort. The experience went on to inspire Hemingway’s novel For Whom The Bell Tolls. The story follows an American volunteer named Robert Jordan who is sent behind fascist lines near Segovia to fight with Republican guerrillas.

Illegal renters warned ILLEGAL holiday lets in Spain are being found out by police due to the large number of towels on balconies. Whistle-blowers in tourist hot spots across the country are turning up at council offices and dishing the dirt on private homeowners, who often don’t pay tax on the ‘black market’ rentals. Under new rules, owners of flats and villas must get a licence to rent out their homes or face hefty fines. In the Balearics, permanent residents of apartment blocks have been told to report any neighbour who is illegally renting out their home. I n J u l y, 2 8 f l a t s i n Ibiza were officially reported and more are expected to follow due to an increase in police inspectors who are hot on the trail of any leads. Warnings are in place to all homeowners across Spain who are considering renting out their homes - which are seen as unfair competition to hotels - without a licence. Getting caught would mean having to withdraw the property from the market and could mean facing a fine of up to €40,000 with reductions for early payment.

ALONG with the rest of the Torrevieja U3A sections, June saw the last outing of the Torrevieja U3A Walking Group, although the team leaders themselves along with a few other hardy members, have been embarking on several expeditions during the oppressive July sunshine to check out new walks for the members to enjoy during the new season. The Group’s walks give its members a unique opportunity to see and appreciate the Costa Blanca at its best and to gain a different perspective of the region, its countryside, wildlife and coast. Following a successful season of walks, the group coordinators are now putting together a schedule of monthly walks which will start in September

OUR VIEW Well done councils ALTHOUGH Spanish councils can have something of a tendency to be bureaucratic they are often very different from UK councils in the way in which they look after residents. The concept in the UK of having an overseas resident’s councillor or department (except perhaps in areas where there is large scale immigration from Africa or the sub-continent) would be quite unusual and on the face of things, there are now far more coalition councils in Spain which means that they are in many faces more balanced. Rubbish collection for purposes of hygiene and the heat is generally daily and in many towns, particularly those near to the coast, there is a daily watering of the streets and cleaning of the beaches. Apart from the regular fairs and fiestas, councils go out of their way to provide entertainment with many towns now offering weekly or one off music events and they don’t just bring in local amateur groups, but often pay quite high amounts for some well-known Spanish bands. In some ways, there is almost too much entertainment and it can be quite irritating to neighbours who are disturbed by the noise of the music and the coming and going of the crowds. All in all however, we have to admire the way in which so many councils endeavour to look after their residents and hopefully the days of corrupt local politicians are in the past so the money collected through tax will be used on the people rather than disappearing into a small number of pockets.

When you take on a pet it’s like having a child! It’s life changing. Neutering is a choice, it shouldn’t be law. Breeding is a choice too. I used to have a dog, a Bichon Frise called Ella, she was wonderful. I had her spayed, and maybe had to manage her diet more after that.

My cat has been neutered but he’s fine. If you haven’t much money (eg you’re on benefits) the vets will do it for you for free. My cat hasn’t explored as much after the operation, he’s happier to stay in the house a bit more, but I don’t think he’s affected too much.

Baby left in car dies A BABY girl has died after being left in a scorching car for eight hours in 30C heat in Mallorca. The 1 0 - m o n t h - o ld ’s

Cleaning the sea ENTRIES for the Maritime Rescue best video award to promote the protection of the marine environment are being sought. Anybody with ideas on how to achieve cleaner seas are encouraged to capture their suggestions in a short video of no more than 40 seconds. The award is included in the Maritime Rescue Awards 2018, which are being held for the second year. The plotters were linked in most cases to the Islamic State and other fundamentalist terror organisations, they added. The attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils and explosions in Alcanar on August 16 and 17 in 2017 claimed the lives of 24 people including eight attackers. More than 152 people were injured. Spain’s Interior Ministry has kept the country’s terror threat level at four out of five since last year, meaning the risk of an attack is high. Sanchez Merkel meeting man Chancellor had agreed to begin talks with the European Union (EU) with a view to making more aid available for border security in Morocco. The Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla share a land border with the North African country. Merkel said the EU’s existing Dublin system, which states that each member state is required to process asylum requests for those arriving on its soil, was not working. She added her and Sanchez had spoken about trying to find a system that would fairly distribute arrivals across the bloc’s member states. “Germany and Spain are counting on European solu-

tions,” Merkel said. The German Chancellor added she was now seeking to strike a similar deal with Greece, another leading destination point for migrants travelling to Europe. The meeting comes as an agreement between Germany and Spain on migrant transfers came into force yesterday. The deal means migrants arriving in Germany but who are already registered in Spain will be returned within 48 hours. There have been no cases since mid-June where the arrangement would apply, according to German media reports. EU leaders are now set to

meet in Salzburg in Austria for a summit on migration in September. Sanchez and Merkel are expected to take their proposals from last weekend’s meeting to the talks. They are expected to be backed by the leaders of

France and Portugal but they could face opposition from countries such as Italy, Austria and Hungary. Anti-immigration feelings hold sway among senior officials in the latter states. At least around 23,500 mi-

SPAIN’S Prime Minister and the German Chancellor have said they have found ‘European solutions’ to migrant arrivals on Spain’s and the continent’s southern frontiers following a meeting last Saturday. Pedro Sanchez and Angela Merkel held a joint press conference following talks at Sanlucar de Barrameda in Cadiz Province. Merkel was staying at the Prime Minister’s summer residence in the Doñana National Park in Huelva Province. Sanchez said the two had agreed to push for more dialogue and co-operation with countries such as Morocco which many migrants travel through in order to reach Spain. He added he and the Ger-

STAT OF WEEK €2.8bn state aid plunge revealed SPAIN has placed third bottom in a European Union-wide ranking of financial support offered to companies. A new report by the National Commission of Markets and Competition has revealed how state aid to firms based in the country has been slashed by €2.8 billion - almost half - since 2009. This represents just 0.26 per cent of gross domestic product with only Italy (0.22 per cent) and Ireland (0.2) contributing less. And the UK (0.36) also fares badly, falling below the EU average 0.7 per cent.

sales depressed. Indeed according to the company, had the results of the first half of the year carried through to the second half, then it would have seen a return to profit. Interim figures for 2018 are encouraging and if they continue to follow the trend of the first six months then final results should be encouraging, especially as the company has reduced its debt €617 million to €415 million. Mango now has 2,190 stores in 110 countries.

National bank’s crypto scheme SPAIN’S central bank has claimed that cryptocurrency and blockchain technology could help the country’s economy. It comes after the Banco de España (BDE) released a report probing the pros and cons of introducing a virtual version of the state currency. And according to industry boffins, digital coins and ledgers would particularly benefit monetary policy and financial infrastructure. BDE senior economist Galo Nuño was the man behind the study, and he argues that blockchain technology could help track the nation’s money supply.

A RECENT report suggests that although prices have increased, it is still much cheaper to live in Spain than in the United Kingdom. Naturally there are regional differences in both countries and there may be a negative affect for new arrivals following Brexit but overall, there are some significant savings to be made for any Brits who want to emigrate to the Iberian Peninsula. The company thinkSpain highlights the main savings that can be made, with the most striking being in the cost of property with average prices per square metre as much as five times cheaper in Spain with certain costs such as heating also significantly lower. Public transport is cheaper as well and there are special discounts which can be obtained for pensioners who are looking to travel relatively long journeys by train. Petrol is still cheaper although by only a few per cent, but if you are lucky enough to live near to G i b r a l t a r, y o u c a n p o p i n t h e r e and fill up saving up to a stunning

If you decide to take up work and are registered with Spanish Social Security then you and your family will be able to take advantage of the health care system and for expatriate pensioners, the UK will currently advise the Spanish health service of your eligibility to be included. So life (including most ‘council taxes’) is cheaper, but there is also the added bonus of the warm w e a t h e r w h i c h s u i t s m a n y, a l though it would be a good idea to check average temperatures across the year as some areas can see exceptional heat in the summer months.

Mercadona phases out plastic bags AFTER introducing a trial in 66 of its supermarkets throughout Spain, the Mercadona group has announced that with effect from 2019 it will cease to supply new plastic bags to customers. The company declared that it supported a sustainable policy as early as 2011 and for the future it will be offering consumers the opportunity to purchase recycled plastic, paper or at a slightly higher cost a raffia basket. The basket in particular has been quite popular with shoppers and has seen an overall reduction in consumption of other types of bags. Another part of its strategy will be to phase in new household goods such as buckets and brooms also made from recycled plastic.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT “DADDY,” says the little boy, looking enquiringly up at his Father. “Why do we wear these long white robes?” “Well my son,” replies his Dad. “That’s to keep the flies away and the mosquitoes from biting our arms and legs.” “Oh I see,” says the boy. “And Dad, why do we wear these wide sandals?” “To stop us from sinking into the sand,” explains his Father. “Also,” he adds, “this cloth over our head is to protect us from the sun and the dust of the desert.” The boy appears somewhat puzzled. “Dad” he says; “why are we dressed like this in the middle of Luton!?” This oldie but goodie, just about sums up the burka controversy that has been wasting so much of our precious time over the last couple of weeks. Basically it demonstrates that there is simply no valid reason whatsoever for any woman to walk around in this garment of utterly depressing Draconian diversity. Not only is it is an affront to European society, it is yet another weapon in the cultural war that is being raged against us by people who have no interest in any integration or acceptance of Western values at all. This foreboding garment is confrontational, intimidating and, as there is no men-

For the women who dress in this manner to consider themselves ‘upset’ or ‘offended’ by Boris referring to them as resembling ‘letterboxes’ and ‘bank robbers’ is pretty rich, when many of them have been utterly scathing and downright insulting with their public accusations of

‘sluts’ and ‘whores’ toward any Western women who deems to wear clothing that may reveal some part of their anatomy slightly above the knee or elbow. Most of these women wear this shapeless attire at the behest of their men, who are so insecure in their relationships, and so jealous and distrustful of their peers, they simply can’t risk any randy ri-

val taking a shine and delivering the ultimate insult by possibly running off with their missus. To my way of thinking, as long as it doesn’t incite rioting or undue hardship, we should be allowed to voice any opinions we desire. Our Western values are slowly but surely being eroded and gagged by this ridiculous political correctness, which to me increasingly appears to be totally one sided and biased against our Western communities. This is how we are all being thanked for extending the hand of friendship and welcome to the diversity and cultures of distant lands. Well I’ve got another phobia which is moving nearer to my heart by the day. It’s called Westernophobia. And I for one am utterly sick and tired of it. The sooner those, who think they can change our society and proud historical heritage by running slip shod over all we hold near and dear, begin to realise we will never succumb to their endeavours, the better it will be for all concerned. IT’S really hard to understand why Theresa May’s leadership hasn’t been challenged. If the milk’s gone off, don’t you throw it out of the fridge? The idea that some miraculous Brexit whiterabbit deal will be pulled out of the hat at the last minute is sheer wishful thinking. Even the infamous Chequers deal’s been rejected by Brussels. Theresa May’s been given plenty of time to show leadership skills. She excels in hand-wringing, feet-dragging and kow-towing to the EU. But her heart isn’t in Brexit.

And her poor negotiating skills seem to be a deliberate act. She sidles into negotiations with an apologetic expression on her face like some bit-part actor in a gloomy pantomime as though all’s lost - maybe geared towards boring everyone into submission? But this isn’t a play or a game. This is about the future of the UK. This accidental PM has nothing to offer, no vision for the future and is totally frozen in power due to the warring Tory tribes and the nightmare proposition of a Marxist Labour opposition. Bring on the Dragons

by Adam Whalley-Lewis SO, the dragons are back. No breathing fire please, remember we are under a Wild Fire Order, but they burst back onto our screens on Sunday evening, BBC2. I’m not sure where said Dragons got their studio from. I think they pinched from Channel 4’s Four Rooms - you know, the show where you turn up with bit of old tat and the rich people in the rooms tell you it’s lovely, but just not for them. Back to the Dragons. Just how tall is Peter Jones and does he live in Sloane Square? I don’t know, but it must deflate your ego something terrible when Peter tells you ‘I just don’t like you’ as he did on Sunday. I really liked the new model tuk-tuk and even though the Dragons were concerned that the entire project was doomed (which it was, Dad’s Army style doomed) I might have risked a Euro or two just to see where the idea might have gotten to. The cast is solid enough though and I won’t give up on this one just yet. BBC1 is currently dishing up another helping of The Real Marigold Hotel on Wednesday nights. The celebrities are, in theory, experiencing life in India with a view to possibly retiring there. I smell a rat. I don’t know how many celebs have visited nice places in the name of possibly retiring there, only to go home and think it over in the final episode and actually never think about it ever again - like those folk on A Place in the Sun who you know just aren’t going to buy the villa on the coast although it is perfect for them. It is worth dipping in via BBC iPlayer, just for Selina Scott and Stanley Johnson. Celebrity Big Brother launches today (Thursday) on Channel 5. You just know I can’t wait for next week’s column. TECH FOR THE TIMID THE astonishing thing about last month’s headlines is not that Spain’s new submarines initially couldn’t float, nor that they won’t fit in their dock. It’s that the darn things work at all, given the squintillions of technical calculations which go into designing them, and the tendency of Murphy’s Law to work overtime in our utterly techno-dependent world. Spain’s minor maritime mishap almost pales into insignificance compared to just how badly NASA screwed up and lost their $125 million Mars orbiter spacecraft in 1999 - because contractor Lockheed Martin was using imperial measurements while NASA was on metric. Oops. How about the Italian ocean liner which couldn’t get out of the shipyard a while back because someone forgot a bridge was in the way? There was Microsoft’s catastrophic Windows ME, consistently voted one of the worst tech products of all time (and let’s not mention Windows Vista).

Or the utterly ill-conceived Amstrad E-mailer in 2000, apparently so bad that rather than wait to hear Alan Sugar ’s famous words, ‘You’re fired!,’ Amstrad CEO Bob Watkins actually fired himself. More recently we’ve had the €400 Juicero which flopped so unsurprisingly when users found they could squeeze the juice better themselves by hand. Or the electronic spaghetti fork which disappeared

from sale last year just before I could add it to my Christmas list. Take the appalling Magellan GPS (please!) that I bought at a bargain price in London’s Tottenham Court Road back at the turn of the century. Never mind something fishy about the price; I should have smelled a whole aquarium. I can still hardly believe that a major manufacturer would put a product on the market which did not, and

So I opened the boot of the car to see what’s what and, to my surprise, there was nothing there. No jack, no spare wheel, not even the ‘get you home tyre.’ There was a bottle of some kind of gooey stuff and a contraption that you plug into the ciggy lighter and then fix to the tyre and blow it up which is useless if the tyre has got a gaping hole in. I didn’t even bother to try and read what you do with the gooey stuff. So why have they stopped putting spares into cars? To make them lighter, which in turn saves fuel apparently, and a few other BS reasons. I was happy with the skinny ‘get you home chap’ that you used to get but to be stranded with nothing is a bit dumb if you ask me. I liked having that option. Why does everyone know better than the consumer? Because no one I’ve asked thinks it’s a good idea. If you do, please let me know why. Although I have a house phone, I use my mobile for nearly all my calls. When I got my bill this month I had a few Spanish calls that I had to pay for which is unusual because I have a con-

tract that includes all Spanish land lines for free. But of course, that doesn’t include 901 or 902 numbers, which is a nuisance because my car insurance company and many other services I use have those numbers. My tip is to go online and find the alternative number, which they all have, that you can then use your mobile to call them. Why don’t companies just change to a ‘normal’ number which would seem logical? However, phone companies offer incentives in order to avoid this happening. In this way the phone company can offer their flat rate tariffs to the public, but know that the majority of people will need to call a 901 or 902 number from time to time. Conned again! Here is another thing to watch out for that happened to me. I got a call from an 8xx number. It rang a couple of times then stopped. Now as I’ve been round the block a few times I didn’t do what a lot of people would do and ring it back because, somewhere in the back of my mind, I remembered reading about a scam where this happens and you call it back and get put on hold after being told some cock and bull story and finish getting charged €3-400 for calling this premium number. There’s also a NoPhone Selfie which has a mirror strapped to the front, and the very latest just off the production line: the NoPhone Air which is literally just an empty bag of packaging. If you’re among the 15,000 people so far who have shelled out around €15 for one of these revolutionary non-gadgets, well, let me talk to you about that bridge I’m still trying to sell.

Amazing help when needed from Benalmadena hospital TWO weeks ago I collapsed in Arroyo and the receptionist in the pensioners building of Mosquito Plaza phoned for a doctor and ambulance. I gave my HIC card and passport to them and 10 minutes later I was in the Benalmadena hospital being attended by doctors. They said it was very serious and we were sent by ambulance to Virgin de la Victoria hospital Malaga. In great pain I told the doctors and surgeon I had a pacemaker and was refused an operation in the UK, long before it become an emergency. They laughed, saying “no problem we do these ops every day,” they spoke English as do many nurses. It was a successful operation, by an amazing team of doctors and as it was 4am my wife was offered a bed to sleep and given updates on me. I enjoyed eight days of high standard care with voluntary translators if needed and I thank everyone for their kindness to us both. I then spent eight days in the Torrequebrada clinic again with voluntary translators on hand if needed.

AS far back as 2003, a UN Sponsored Conference affirmed the importance of citizens having ready access to the ‘information society.’ Recently, a number of EU countries, including Spain have gone further and declared internet access to be a basic right of citizens. Unfortunately, in the year 2018, access to ‘reliable’ internet services in Spain seems to be a postcode lottery. For example, if you are a Movistar customer in the village of Orxeta, in the hills just above Villajoyosa, you can expect 4G wireless internet at download speeds in excess of 20 mbps. If you live just over the hill, as I do, in the village of Relleu you have to make do with a grossly over-subscribed 3G service, very often returning speeds less than 1 mbps. That just can’t be right. Yes we have access to the internet, but often we can’t use it! THE annual fair, the Marvels of Maro, will be held in that village just outside Nerja from September 6 to 8. It may have just 800 residents, but what it lacks in size, it makes up in determination to ensure that residents and visitors enjoy three great days of celebration. The fair opens with a procession through the village accompanied by a brass band at 1pm followed by a selection of local food and a performance by singer Manuel Rodríguez ‘El Sevillita.’ At 5pm there will be a tribute to the longest married couple in Maro with music by Placido and later that evening after a dance routine, the Queen and her ladies will be elected and the Al-Alba group who are celebrating 30 years of performance will be congratulated before they play on stage. The following day sees a huge paella offered to visitors as well as more music and dance with the election of Miss Flamenca Mareña. There will be a race through the streets, a choir and another appearance of the Al-Alba group alongside Nuevo Compás. Sunday sees a mass in honour of their patron saint, the Virgin of the Wonders, which will be

Caribbean Chicken Curry Serves 4 1 kg chicken breast meat skinned, boned and cubed 2 tablespoons of rapeseed or sunflower seed oil 1 large onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, chopped 1 teaspoon allspice, ground 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon curry powder 2 chicken stock cubes 1 teaspoon celery salt 2 bay leaves 1 teaspoon of ground mace 2 tablespoons dried coconut 2 tablespoons mango powder 1 can of tomatoes 1 jigger dark rum 200ml orange juice 1 bunch cilantro leaf, chopped 2 teaspoons cornstarch, mixed with a little water Fry chicken in oil until browned. Add onion and garlic and fry until both golden. Add curry powder, fry for two minutes on a very low heat. Add all the other ingredients, except for the cornstarch. Simmer for 15 minutes or until chicken cooked. Add cornstarch/water mix slowly and constantly stirring, to thicken the sauce. Serve with steamed rice.

The best solution is to learn to like the plants that grow naturally in the Mediterranean climate. They are many and varied. If you do some research to find the Mediterranean plants that suit your garden environment and the effect you want from your garden then you have the easiest of work to make a garden. If you have natural soil in your garden and the plants are native, preparation and maintenance of a garden is minimal. The need to water the garden will be greatly reduced. In a truly native garden the watering would principally be to establish new plants that have been introduced to the garden and assist some plants during extended dry and hot periods. Water use in the garden is minimal. Normally we garden though to enjoy caring for plants and benefiting from the

CONTROLLING WATER: Is important for the benefit of everyone. flowers, fruits and other produce which are not native to the region. We also like to attract and support wildlife in our garden environment. This increases the need to have more water available in the garden. To minimise this need, soil improvement is the most important issue to retain moisture in the soil. Soil protection is also very helpful so a good mulch and appropriate shading of zones to reduce direct sun exposure of the soil and plants will also make a big difference to water retention. Application of water is also

very important to regulate the amount of water needed to keep the root zone of plants moist. Well designed drip irrigation is the most effective way to apply water just where it is needed with minimal time and effort. There is always a place for a hose to water just what you want and to ensure plants get what they need. The best times to apply water in summer is in the early morning and late evening to reduce evaporation. Capturing water for the garden can also make a big difference to supply and availability. If you can channel water into

storage containers for the garden it will reduce the need for water from other sources. A large container can be enough to supply water for birds for weeks. Even hilling up ridges around the garden plants and trees can allow the capture of summer storm rain water so it does not just run off into drainage systems. In winter the ridges can be raked out if they are not necessary. The value of water as a resource needs to be measured against the value of the garden to provide the environmental benefits and produce to support our quality of lifestyle. Gardens are a haven for wildlife so providing water and moisture in a garden can make it an oasis for many birds and beneficial insects. Reducing the need for water however allows the benefits of water to be shared more widely. Responsible conservation of water allows us to have gardens for the benefit of everyone.

McQueen’s Hudson up for sale A HUGE convertible that Hollywood legend Steve McQueen used as his day-to-day car has emerged for sale for €69,000. The Hudson Commodore Six dates back to 1950 and was owned by the legendary

actor for several decades until his death in 1980. One of the most famous car collectors of all time, the Great Escape star had a soft spot for Hudsons and actually owned four of them. This model is thought to

have been his favourite, and was his daily runabout ride. After the King of Cool’s death in November 1980, the Hudson was sold to one of McQueen’s friends, before it fell into the hands of the current owner in 2015. It has barely been driven in the last few years, spending a significant amount of time in storage. The open topped coupe has a white and brown Americana-style body with chrome trim and a beige folding roof. The interior has been perfectly kept and maintained, including plum-coloured seats and a vintage chrome stereo. Under the bonnet, the motor boasts a six-cylinder 170 bhp engine, which was upgraded during McQueen’s ownership. The classic motor is now set to go under the hammer with Bonhams Auctions in California on August 24. Auctioneers have given it a pre-sale estimate of between €51,000 and €69,000.
