Swimming home by Joe Gerrard A GUARDIA CIVIL patrol boat has taken a loggerhead turtle out into the sea off the Cabo de Gata area to release it back into the wild. The turtle, named Benjamin, has been recovering at the Almeria-based Equinac animal centre for the past two years. Marine workers have mounted a satellite tracker to the top of his shell so his movements can be
monitored. He was previously found injured and had to have one of his front fins surgically removed. Equinac said in a statement they were grateful to the Guardia Civil for the co-operation in helping Benjamin return home. “We do not have enough words to thank the Guardia Civil with. It’s been amazing to count on them again,” the group said. “The signal is telling us that Benjamin is still in the
area at the moment,” they added. The tracker was made in the United States and was financed with money from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The monitor cost around €2,000 with a €130 a month charge for the satellite subscription. Vulnerable status falls between ‘near threatened’ and ‘endangered’ and means the species faces a ‘high risk’ of extinction in the wild. Equinac said the main threats to animals such as loggerhead turtles were plastics and fishing nets, with thousands accidentally caught every year.

Police staff claims A TRADE UNION representing National Police officers in Almeria claimed the number of personnel in the province has decreased despite force bosses stating 100 reinforcements had been sent there. Raimundo Morales, provincial secretary for the Federal Union of Police (UFP) in Almeria, said he and his colleagues considered staffing levels to be “critical.” The National Police said there were currently more than 100 extra officers in the province. These included two dog squads with four animals, four inspectors and 34 personnel rotating between units all of which have been brought in for the summer, they added. Morales said the ongoing
migrant situation was placing a strain on the current number of officers and he has called for an extra 50 personnel at least. Morales added his claims that numbers had fallen was due to office-based staff retiring and reinforcements being used to fill their places. Police sources said some 15 officers from Malaga would remain in Almeria until December to help forces in the province deal with the migrant situation.

Four held in ‘theft’ probe

POLICE investigating 11 allegations of theft from arcade and slot machines in a Roquetas de Mar urbanisation have arrested four people in connection with the probe. Three of the suspects have been remanded in custody after appearing before courts, with the investigation remaining open to probe robberies which happened after the arrests.
Drugs bust GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized 526 kilograms of marihuana plants as well as lamps, fans and extractors from a house in Roquetas de Mar. A 25-year-old resident of the town has been arrested in connection with the haul, with police figures stating more than 24,150 cannabis plants have been seized this year.

Bear necessity A BROWN bear suspected of killing livestock in the Pyrenees mountains is set to be deported from Spain. The 200-kilo predator, named Goiat, was captured in Slovenia in 2016 and released in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park in Isil, Lleida Province, Cataluña, as part of a European Union-funded programme to reintroduce the species after it almost disappeared in the 1990’s. However, the young male has developed a bloodthirsty streak, and this April alone killed six horses, four foals and several sheep in the area. Consequently, the Catalan government has now bowed to
months of pressure from local farmers, agreeing to hatch a plan for Goiat’s ‘capture and transfer.’ The move has sparked outrage among environmentalists and green action groups, since he was introduced to combat an inbreeding problem among bears in the area, most of which are the offspring of Pyros, a male also introduced from Slovenia in 1997 which now reproduces with his own offspring’s cubs. In 1996 there were just three brown bears left in the Pyrenees, with the total now having risen to 43, and another 300 believed to survive in the mountains of Cantabria.
Cash pledge IMPROVEMENTS to the rail link between Almeria and Granada were among proposals put forward after Junta de Andalucia President met with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at his Madrid residence. Gender violence trial PROSECUTORS have requested a defendant charged with committing a sex attack and murder in Huercal de Almeria be handed the maximum sentence in Spanish law if found guilty. The man, named as Francisco SGS, could be handed the revisable permanent prison sentence if he is convicted over the assault and killing of Antonia GA, 33, in January 2017. Almeria Provincial Prosecutors added in their initial submissions to justices they were also seeking
€200,000 in damages for the victim’s family should jurors find the defendant guilty. Guardia Civil officers found the body of the 33-year-old after they were called out to her house on the town’s Paseo de Generalife by residents in the early hours. The defendant was arrested and charged without bail with the killing and with sexually assaulting her. The 33-year-old was the first gender violence victim of 2017 in Andalucia.

Officer death
THE head of Almeria’s Border Police force has died following a road crash in Almeria City. Jose Antonio Garcia Diaz was travelling down the city’s Avenida del Mediterraneo at around 2.30am on Saturday morning when the crash took place. No other vehicles were involved, according to police sources. Almeria’s Local Police department said in a tribute on Twitter Garcia Diaz’s family and friends had their ‘unconditional’ support.

Garcia Diaz’s body is set to be moved to Paseo de la Sabica, in Granada City, this coming Saturday. The officer was from Granada. His funeral plans include a burial in the Emucesa chapel in the city where a memorial is set to be created for him.

Gateway to Europe TOP COASTGUARDS rescued more than 1,000 people from several boats off Spanish coasts last weekend as figures show the country has taken in the most migrants in Europe this year. Boats carrying the people, many refugees fleeing wars and persecution in sub-Saharan Africa, were spotted by the Salvamento Maritimo in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea. A heavily pregnant woman was among those on board the boats bound for Spain. Coastguards found her as she was going into labour and she was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Almeria after making landfall. Friday saw the arrival of some 450 people in 20 small vessels, many of them inflatable rafts. A total of 329 people were rescued from 22 vessels on Saturday and 465 were picked up from 25 boats on Sunday, according to Salvamento Maritimo figures. The Intentional Organisation for Migration (IOM), a United Nations body, called on countries to treat migrants humanely and with dignity, respect and compassion. Spain has now become the leading gateway for people attempting to reach Europe, with almost
24,000 migrants having arrived by land and sea according to the United Nations. A total of 20,835 people arrived by sea while the number of those coming to the country by land stood at 3,158 as of last Tuesday. A total of 7,791 migrants arrived on the Andalucian coast in June, more than Italy, Greece and Malta combined. The migratory route into the country is now proportionally the deadliest in the world. One in every 29 people who attempted to make the crossing to Spain since the start of this year has died. The figure for those heading to Italy was one in 36, according to the latest data from the IOM. Maria Jesus Vega, the United Nation’s Refugee spokesperson in Madrid, said earlier this year problems in the home countries of the migrants were still unresolved. “A much greater effort must be made to support integration that goes beyond exclusively providing shelter. “The reality is that the number of persecuted people fleeing conflict continues to grow every day,” she said.

Balcony horror plunge A LABOUR PARTY councillor is battling for his life after plummeting from a secondfloor holiday flat in Ibiza. Tolga Aramaz, 23, the representative for Edmonton Green in the London borough of Enfield, was critically injured and remains in intensive care at the private Nuestra Señora del Rosario Clinic in the wake of the accident. The former King’s College student is believed to have been with friends when he fell in the Playa d’En Bossa holiday hotspot. There were six candidates, but the three front runners were two women who were former government ministers and a relatively unknown 37-year-old male. The PP has a dual voting system whereby there is a popular vote of grass roots members and a delegates vote which saw the candidate who came third, María Dolores de Cospedal eliminated, leaving former Deputy Prime Minister María Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría Antón against Pablo Casado who was one of the three deputies for Avila in the national Congress of Deputies. In the event, the popular vote saw María Soraya Sáenz take the lead with 21,512 votes (37 per cent) against Pablo Casado’s 19,954, (34.4 per cent) but the Delegate vote of 1,701 (57.6 per cent) against 1,250, (42.4 per cent) saw Mr Casado take the day. There probably won’t be a general election in Spain until 2020 (although this is not guaranteed due to the fact that the PSOE under Pedro Sanchez is a vulnerable minority government) so it should give the new PP leader time to distance the party from the negative situation with the alleged corruption of the past. Whilst he describes himself as a ‘liberal-conservative’ others suggest that his stance against abortion, ‘gender ideology’ and even Schengen, suggest that he may be quite far right of centre which may appeal to the machismo of many male voters.

Roach control WORKERS in Huercal de Almeria have begun trying to clear public areas in the city of cockroaches due to a rise in their numbers during summer. Pest controllers from Athisa, working as part of the council operation in the town, have targeted sewage systems in an effort to flush out the insects. Ismael Torres, the town’s mayor, said residents should contact local authorities if they find cockroaches. “On many occasions it is only possible to know about incidents through locals, therefore for us this cooperation is essential,” Torres said. The council said dead cockroaches would be a common site on the pavements of Huercal de Almeria in the coming days. This is due to the insects attempting to flee after they have been treated with pesticides before dying. The local authority added workers were also using methods to prevent the cockroach population from returning in future. The species targeted is the American cockroach, the most common type of that insect. They can enter homes through sewage systems, underneath doors, through plumbing and air vents.

Dillon Connery, 18, was found on the floor after being shot in the face by a stagemounted gun at the Carwash Club. Spanish medics are battling to save the cyber security firm trainee from Paisley’s eyes in the wake of the horror accident, which happened just hours after he arrived in Mallorca with six pals. He has already undergone a series of operations in Spain and flown back to Glasgow for more treatment at Gartnavel Hospital. SUPER DUPER: Robber disguised himself. A MAN dressed as comic book hero Superman has robbed two stores. For some unexplained reason the man thought it would be a good idea to dress up as the legendary crime fighter while he held up two Chinese food stores in Javali Nuevo and La Nora in Murcia. But the effect of the famously striking blue, red and yellow outfit was spoiled by him covering it over with a black body warmer, while a cycling helmet and dark glasses completed
the ensemble to comic effect. There was nothing funny about the double barrelled shotgun he brandished as he demanded cash during the robberies, although one child on the scene did ask the robber if the gun was real. Back came the reply “do you want to find out” at which point the terrified youngster fled the scene. National Police who viewed security videos identified a suspect. A man, aged 30, was later arrested. Police seized a shotgun, five weapons, a cycling helmet - and a Superman costume.
Sex attack claim By Matt Ford TWO brothers who are professional boxers trained by former world champion Ricky Hatton are among four British men held in Ibiza on suspicion of gang-raping a female holidaymaker. Paul Upton, 30 and his younger brother Sonny, 29, both from London, have been remanded in custody in the wake of a court hearing following their arrests in San Antonio. A third boxer named as 21year-old Bradley Smith from St Ives in Cambridgeshire has been freed on bail with the unnamed fourth man as investigators continue to probe the case. The quartet is believed to have denied the accusations. It comes after a 29-year-old British holidaymaker alleges she was sexually assaulted by the group after meeting them at well-known bar Lineker’s and being force-fed two pills. She claims she was then taken to the Marian apartment complex where she was held down while the men took it in turns to have sex with her.

PORN and the Master Plan for the Use and Management of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park (PRUG) are both designed to prevent fishing in the area. Angling is prohibited in much of the park’s nature reserves. Both plans state that recreational fishing can only take place outside of the six nature reserves in the park.

But when a Guardia Civil patrol pulled up to the house around 9pm Simon started firing at them from a small window after barricading himself in the attic. Reinforcements were called and an exchange of bullets ensued, with Simon firing at least 20 times, injuring one officer’s foot, while the hamlet’s 100 inhabitants were told to stay indoors after police described him as ‘extremely dangerous.’ At some point between 6am and 7am he vanished as the special operations unit arrived, with investigators now believing he wriggled through a skylight on the back of the building before disappearing into the surrounding forest. The mayor of neighbouring Camaleño, Oscar Casares, called the encounter “unprecedented,” describing the “fear and worry” experienced by locals after they learned he had made his getaway with the gun. Simon, who was said to be “hungry and exhausted” when captured, has been remanded in custody and is unlikely to be granted bail, the Guardia Civil confirmed in a statement.

DEADLY: Three have been killed by Asian hornets. A 65-YEAR-OLD man in Galicia has died after being stung by an invasive species of hornet, the third to do so in a week. Local emergency services personnel said the man, named as Manuel FP, had died after having an allergic reaction to the sting. The previous two to die also experienced re a c tions a fte r be ing s tung by na tive species, emergency services added. An Asian hornet stung the bus driver, who was nearing retirement, at around 6pm. He then went into his house and his wife gave him a shot of adrenaline knowing he was allergic to the stings, according to reports. were killed after being stung in Galicia in a week. The first died on Saturday July 14 in Viveiro and the second days later while working on a farm in O Porriño. Asian wasps can kill people who are allergic to stings and they are also a risk to people in ill health. A spokesperson for the Spanish Association of Beekeepers said they had received between one and three warnings a day since the insects were first spotted around two weeks ago. Workers have managed to clear between 30 and 40 nests so far this year. The insects are believed to have arrived in Europe in around 2004. They were first recorded in France with media reports suggesting they came in boxes of pottery from China.

What on earth is going on? LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT CAN anyone please tell me what the hell is actually going on with this planet of ours? The whole shebang seems to be teetering on some kind of destabilising precipice with our socalled leaders stumbling through it all in a complete befuddled daze. Politics groping through a tangled jungle of confusion and governmental garbage, getting all their priorities wrong and having no knowledge or way of even vaguely coming to grips with it all. Those, who are laughingly under the impression that they can make a difference, are all rushing around, trying to look important and ultimately reversing up their own backsides. I cannot help but think we are yet again all pawns in some devious plan set in motion by those who truly run our lives. Shadowy figures, who walk the secret corridors of those who hold the wealth of the world to their electronic bosoms and have the ability to buy and sell countries. These individuals instigate, and even rely on worldwide destabilisation, confusion and chaos to put their own devious and self-gratifying schemes into operation. Dividing and prospering is their speciality. Another Leapy rant? I hear you say. Well I was accused of plenty of those, when I warned 30 years

So, don’t dismiss the ‘ol boy’s ramblings too flippantly. Look at the state were all in. Mid-East turmoil, African wars (Congo in particular, who conveniently hold vast supplies of cobalt, required in the
manufacture of electric cars!) is forcing so many opposing cultures and numbers into the mix, they are destabilising economies, causing anger and distrust in communities; destroying freedom of speech and generally upsetting their whole previously peaceful and fairly contented existence. These manipulators must love all this EU fiasco,
you can bet they have a few fingers in that particular pie. Palestine are chucking over missiles into Israel and going virtually unreported. Russia has been taken over by criminals. China is still twitching nervously (after managing to drop the lid on the North Korean antics for a bit). An unpredictable TV personality controls the most powerful nation on Earth (or thinks he does!). All this diversity rubbish has created its natural reaction from idiots, whose lunatic ideas and schemes muddy the waters of common sense even more. And on it goes. I just can’t shake off the feeling that the whole thing is some kind of smoke screen, devised by these hidden manipulators to create some form of new world order which will be beneficial to only them. Saudi Arabia doesn’t seem to be experiencing too much turmoil since their new man took over. They have you notice put up a seriously red herring of sharing in our drastic culture changes by allowing women to drive! By the amount of money they have sucked out over the years, you can bet there’s a few of their oily fingers entrenched somewhere in the ‘club.’ Ah well. There is only one thing you can rely on. TECH FOR THE TIMID AN Amazon vendor just gave me a stark ultimatum: take down my bad review, or lose the €209 they owed me. Would you? In these litigious times they could of course just sue, as indeed a New York doctor did last month for a million dollars, when a patient posted a negative review. Then again you might recall what happened when guests logged a terrible review of Blackpool’s Broadway Hotel (‘a rotten stinking hovel’). The hotelier made headline news and was deluged by crippling publicity after adding a £100 (€114) fine to their bill for reputational damage. And now it’s happened to me. Hold the presses. It all started with a quest for a phone - a very particular phone, which only one vendor stocked, on Amazon’s French ‘Marketplace.’ That’s where Amazon lets third-party merchants sell their own goods and pay the retail giant a tidy commission (on condition they don’t undercut Amazon’s own prices, but that’s a juicy titbit for a different kind of article).

REVIEWS: Hell hath no fury ….. I came, I saw, I ordered. And waited. And waited. Thirteen days later, phoneless and desperate after the order failed twice for reasons unknown, I lost confidence, abandoned hope and cancelled, ordering a simpler phone from Amazon itself and getting it in a day. Wasting scads of time and temper had left me aggrieved enough to post
a poor review. After all, 70 per cent of people are now said to read reviews before buying online. I wrote nothing libellous, nothing vituperative, just the facts ma’am, nothing but the facts. In the meantime, still no refund. Then an ultimatum from the seller, French retailer Hobby-Discount: take down your review or your money is
blocked. Voila and ouch. To my shame, I buckled. Every man has his price, and mine is a derisory €209. Then my refund arrived safely and I instantly reposted my review, turbocharged, updated and twice as mean. With another one for luck on the widely-consulted TrustPilot ratings site. So there. Amazon’s press office has gone to ground with my subsequent query, but its policy couldn’t be clearer: sellers absolutely cannot force buyers to remove their comments, says an official response on the American mother-ship’s site. Any attempt to manipulate ratings, feedback or product reviews is prohibited and could result in a vendor’s ‘selling privileges’ being revoked. Bottom line: we CAN fight back against shoddy service. Bad reviews might not ruin the Microsofts or Apples of this world, your local pizza joint or even my haughty French merchant. Let’s face it though, revenge is sweet. After I got my €209 back.
Blackmail order MY favourite Amazon review comes from a dissatisfied buyer: ‘I measured the TV and it was actually 104.6 inches not 105 so I returned it.’ No, customers aren’t always right as the old dictum has it. Except in their own minds. The tough reality with consumers now holding so much power in their pens is that, when a customer complains, vendors simply have to grin and bear it. At best they can have a review taken down if it has been posted multiple times, or is ‘libellous, defamatory, harassing, threatening or inflammatory.’ By all means speak out when service is shoddy, but keep it in proportion. Is it worth it spending hours of your life trying to bring down a company for a single shoddy service? Well, perhaps …

DID you know that many tourists are unwittingly breaking the law each year when travelling abroad with their prescribed medication? Wherever you’re travelling to, the chances are your holiday destination will have laws that are very different. According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), it is not uncommon for medication that is acceptable in some countries, to be classified as ‘controlled drugs’ in others. The BBC have warned holidaymakers to check travel advice on medication they plan to take abroad to avoid being fined, or worse arrested and imprisoned. For example some cold remedies are banned in Japan, and Zambia won’t allow Benylin cough syrup through its borders. Examples of controlled medicines can include painkillers, such as diamorphine, and some medicines containing hormones, such as anabolic steroids. Read on for some practical advice on this little known risk facing travellers: What should you do if taking prescribed medication with you? Plan well ahead. Different countries have different rules and regulations on permitted

PLAN AHEAD: Make sure that your medicine is legal before travelling. medicine and the maximum quantity you can take in. Some countries, like India and Turkey, have lists of medicines they won’t allow into the country. Speak to your GP or practice nurse about where you’ll be going at least four to six weeks before you travel so they can advise whether special arrangements are required for your particular medication. You can also get information about the rules
that apply to the country you are visiting from their local foreign embassy. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website also provides more general country information on health: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice. How to travel with your medication. Always carry medication and medical equipment (eg needles) in their original, labelled packages. Carry a copy of your prescription and ideally a letter from your GP with details
of your health condition/s and your medication, including the generic name of the medicine (not just the brand name). This documentation will be very helpful if you need to arrange replacement medication for any reason while abroad, as well as helping you through border control. Carry at least three days’ supply of essential medication in your hand luggage in case your baggage is delayed. Note that you are allowed to carry essential medicines of more than 100ml in your hand luggage, as long as you have supporting documentation from your doctor. Pack spare medication in your checked-in luggage too (with copies of the supporting prescription), in case you lose your hand luggage. Don’t be caught out by medication that requires temperature control (eg below 25C) if you are travelling to a very hot country. Your doctor or local chemist should be able to provide guidance here. You can help keep your medicine cool by using a thermos flask, or cool bag with ice packs. Wherever you are going, stay safe, healthy and don’t fall foul of foreign laws. In the Ref 5531 World Time Minute Repeater, the engineers in Geneva merged these two complications for the first time in Patek Philippe’s history and in an unprecedented manner: the time is always struck as indicated by the hour and minute hands for the time zone represented by the city aligned with the 12 o’clock position. In short the Repeater chimes the time accurately to the second at its current actual location. The select owners of a World Time Repeater want to see the time in all 24 time zones of the world at a glance. Now, for the first time in horological history, time is sounded acoustically and simultaneously.

TEACHERS must stop trying to wrap children in cotton wool with OTT health and safety policies, according to the chief inspector of schools. Making pupils wear high-vis vests on trips makes them look like Bob the Builder minus the hard hat, and enforcing bans on conkers and yo-yos by schools makes it harder for kids to tackle real dangers. Couldn’t agree more! And what about the silencing of Big Ben until 2021 to prevent maintenance workers being deafened? As one MP scoffed: “The Luftwaffe couldn’t stop it, but health and safety has.” A father had to demolish his garden pond because burglars could fall in and drown. He faced eviction if he failed to remove it. Health and Safety legislation has undeniably saved many lives and prevented many serious injuries, but this has surely gone too far. And the reason for all this? The threat of lawsuits and the consequent closing of ranks when an incident does occur. Overall, the UK’s PC culture continues to thrive. Like changing the term ‘brainstorming’ to ‘thought showers’ so as not to offend epileptics, or calling a Spotted Dick pudding a Spotted Richard to stop lewd jokes. Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man THERE was a new series starting on TV last Sunday called ‘Unforgotten.’ I do like a bit of ‘who dunnit’ drama on the TV and this series is on for the next eight weeks. I am also watching two or three other series plus the box set of Suits. (The missus insisted because Meghan Markle is in it.) Here lies the problem - after the first 15 or 20 minutes of this ‘Unforgotten’ I was lost. There are too many characters, too twisty a plot and not a hope in hell of me remembering who’s who. So my suggestion is, and some programme schedulers already do this, just make a maximum of seven episodes and put one on every night for a week. Problem sorted and Robert’s yer relative. Most of us have catch up so if you are out and miss an episode you can watch it when you want and it doesn’t matter if there are two or three different series going on at different times. I mean, the dross on at the moment could easily be replaced. Like these programmes that trace your relatives back to the 17th century. What a lot of nonsense! I wasn’t even sure who my dad was never mind my great,
great, great, great grandfather! Talking of TV and entertainment my mind wandered back, for some reason, to when I was a kid some 60 years ago and to a radio show I used to listen to. I think it was on a Saturday and featured Archie Andrews and Peter Brough. It was called ‘Educating Archie.’ So what made me think of this? Well for the first time I remembered that Archie was a puppet and Peter was a ventriloquist. Yup that’s right a ventriloquist act on the radio! What was the point? Nobody could see if his lips moved or not! The things we just used to accept and to be honest really enjoy. Last Friday was the 13th and couple of things went boss-eyed. Nothing serious but they were immediately blamed on the day and the date! I’m not superstitious but in my mum’s flats they never had a number 13 because they reckoned people wouldn’t buy it which I was amazed at. Actually Mrs S has just told me nor do we! One of the funniest things happened to me on a plane once. My seat number was 13F. As she got in her seat in row 12, a woman looked at me and said, “I don’t envy you, you are in the unlucky seat.” The big grin on her face soon disappeared when I politely informed her that if row 13 went down there was a very good chance row 12 was coming with it! mikesenker@gmail.com

Ignorance was not an excuse in the past LEAPY, I was interested in your article which stated a rapist was set free because he didn’t understand British law. It had always been my understanding that ignorance of the law is no defence. It would appear that a precedent has been set and now this excuse has been legalised. How many people can now escape prosecution with this excuse? I was interested in a previous article about graffiti, following the death of three alleged vandals on the railway. I worked on the railway for many years and these hooligans were a menace, destroying everything in their path. First of all they hit the trains. This resulted in trains being taken out of service to be cleaned. Now trains don’t grow on Christmas trees and a train that is stopped for repair may result in a cancellation. Of course the disgruntled passengers blame the train operator, not the perpetrators. Trains are infrequently vandalised now, that is because depots and sidings have more security fencing and cameras than Fort Knox. Instead these mindless yobs destroy bridges and line side equipment, and

Visit Madrid MY wife and I recently returned from a short city break in Madrid. On our return to Torrevieja I spoke with my fellow expats in the pubs and bars and was surprised very few had taken the trip. More police I AM worried about the spate of crimes that are happening on the Costa del Sol. At least six robberies have occurred in the last month in places like Riviera, Calahonda, including Mijar Golf House, and Mirador de Miraflores. BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT remains a huge hit for ITV - yet Simon Cowell has revealed that a move to rival broadcaster BBC has been on his mind lately. It seems unlikely, but Simon Cowell claimed to the Mail on Sunday that the BBC made an offer to poach the reality TV competition series ‘a few years ago.’ He apparently turned down that offer. “You always wonder if this show would work better on the BBC,” he said. “I have thought about that a lot recently. “Genuinely, I have, because do you always want to be in the same place?” Cowell added: “I have thought about it. [The BBC] did offer me a deal a few years ago, and it’s something I am thinking about.”

CHOCOHOLICS will be happy to learn that chocolate milk is one of the best drinks to boost recovery after exercise. According to a recent survey, chocolate milkshakes allow athletes to exercise for six minutes longer than advertised sports drinks as well as improve heart rate and lactic acid levels which could cause cramping. The chocolate and milk combined contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats and electrolytes unlike the more traditional drinks which often do not contain proteins. The research was conducted at the Sadoughi University in Iran, Study author Dr Amin Salehi-Abargouei said, “Chocolate milk contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, flavonoids, electrolytes, and some vitamins which make this drink a good choice for recovery in athletes. “The take-home message is that chocolate milk is a low-

cost, delicious and palatable option for recovery and provides either similar or superior effects compared with commercial drinks.” One-hundred-and-fifty participants were used in the experiment and asked to complete a number of tasks from running and cycling to gym work. Their post-recovery process was then analysed with tests done on heart rates, levels of lactic acid and tiredness. Kim Spaccarotella from Kean University in Union, New Jersey, was not involved in the study, but agreed with the research, saying, “Any food that provides carbohydrate, protein, fluid and electrolytes and is well-tolerated will help promote recovery. “In addition to chocolate milk, other popular choices

All in the mind WHILST we may have read about Meghan Markle’s strict meditation routine in the days leading to her wedding or Goldie Hawn’s summer vacation to a retreat in Greece, the relatively new practice of mindfulness is still an unknown practice that most of us are still unacquainted with. Rooted from ancient Buddhist traditions, the modern version of the mindfulness movement began in 1979. Kabat-Zinn; a professor from Massachusetts Medical School who worked on pain relief in his patients discovered that patients tried to mentally escape or avoid the pain, but this inner struggle resulted in creating more problems, mental anguish and exhaustion. By teaching them a mindful approach to the pain, he
could relieve distress and improve overall health. Mindfulness is a natural quality that we all possess, we just need to focus on the art of creating space for ourselves - time to think, breathe and be aware of our actions at that present moment. The benefits of practising mindfulness in adults, children and in the workplace are overwhelming. Proven positive outcomes include the following: Decreased stress, better health, more energy, reduced depression symptoms, assistance in recovery, improved academic success and enhanced ability to deal with illness. To learn the art of mindfulness needs consistent practice as quoted by Buddha - ‘Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.’ So, to begin the process
set a time limit each day that will be viable, take a seat in a place that makes you feel calm and start by noticing your body. Feel the sensation of your breath as you inhale and exhale. When you notice your mind beginning to wander and your attention leaves the sensations of the breath to think of other things simply return your attention to the breath. Don’t be judgemental to yourself or obsess over the content of your thoughts, just go back to experiencing the awareness of your breath so you too can feel the amazing benefits of this calming form of meditation. Remember - ‘Mindfulness is the act of being intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling at every moment - without interpretation or judgement.’

La Vida will be Loca this summer first record. Five of his teenage years were spent as a member of the group Menudo, but he left in 1989 to concentrate on his solo career. In 1991 the first of many albums he recorded during the following years in Spanish was released, then in 1994 he was persuaded to move to Los Angeles to appear in TV soap operas including General Hospital. In 1995 he returned to music, releasing the album ‘A Medio Vivir.’ One of the
tracks, ‘Maria’ was released as a single that reached number 1 throughout Europe. The beginning of the Latin explosion which took over the music industry towards the end of the 90’s was attributed to the enormous worldwide success of ‘La Vida Loca’ and later ‘She Bangs.’ It is hardly surprising that there is a great demand for tickets at all the venues for this forthcoming tour. RICKY MARTIN begins a 10date tour of Spain on August 14. The Puerto Rican born singer, with a Spanish Grandmother, has always felt a great connection with the country. “Spain is a country with which I share many memories and strong ties born of my roots and the love they have given me since I first visited.” Martin’s career started at a young age, by nine years old he had appeared in more than 10 commercials in his own country, and at 13 recorded his

The show which received tremendous accolade in the early 2000’s was stopped in 2011 due to low viewing figures, however in 2017 RTVE approved a new season of the talent show produced by Gestmusic Endemol, returning to TVE after 13 years. The risk paid off and the show has once again become an enormous hit. TVE has already commissioned the series for a second new series. Although at the beginning of the tour only the concerts in
Madrid and Barcelona were announced, it’s tremendous popularity after the first season meant extending a list of cities to the tour which will now pass through Almeria. The tour is programmed to arrive at the Recinto de Conciertos del Ferial de Almería on August 25 with the concert beginning at 9.30pm. to Live Well by Andrew Harding LAST week I started talking about essential vitamins and minerals that humans need, to remain healthy. I covered Vitamin A last time, this week I am going to cover Vitamin D and before anyone asks if I don’t know my alphabet, I can assure you I do. The importance of these two vitamins being fat soluble cannot be over-emphasised, which is why I am discussing them sequentially with E and K next. Both A & D vitamins have a ‘get out clause.’ As I mentioned last week, betacarotene can be turned into Vitamin A and sunshine on human skin synthesises Vitamin D. Back to more fake science; sun tans are bad for you? No, they are not, sunburn is bad for you, a sun tan indicates that your body is self-protecting. I could weep when I see parents putting their children in all-in-one suits, with a peaked cap, a neck protector and covering any other exposed flesh with sun cream and wondering why their children don’t want to go to the beach or the pool, because a) they look ridiculous and b) because they are too hot. Use a good sunscreen!
Las Juergas Rock Festival 2018 IF rock is the genre of music that ticks all your boxes then look no further than Las Juergas Rock Festival 2018 in Adra, Almeria. The three-day festival between August 2 - August 4 will feature national and international rock bands playing over consecutive days to the hundreds of camping rock fanatics that have travelled from long distances to be there. Among the bands appearing this year will be Bad Religion, Soziedad Alkoholika, Narko and Green Valley. The winners of the Juergas Rock Competiton 2018, which began in June will open the festival with the winning song. This event sells out very quickly, caravan spaces are already sold out for this year but there is still availability for camping - so grab your tent and go along! SPUD U LIKE: Pan-fried gnocchi. My personal recommendation is for one that is applied at the beginning of the day and lasts for 10 hours. It means concentrating to ensure its application is thorough once only! I have used this type of sunscreen on my three children with no problems at all. It reacts with the skin to make it UVLA (Ultra Violet Light Band A, linked with skin cancer), impervious. It is not impervious to UVLB that causes tanning. The fake science continues with regard to UVL. Yes, there is a link with malignant melanoma which can prove fatal if not discovered early enough, two other UVL related cancers are easily treatable and do not spread even after they have been present for 10+ years. However, diseases associated with Vitamin D deficiency are making a huge comeback: Osteoporosis and osteopenia, 17 types of
cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, gout, infertility and PMS, Parkinson’s disease, depression and SAD, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, periodontal disease and psoriasis. A tan will help to preclude all of the above, despite what the ‘experts’ say! Only one short recipe this week, but one that is full of flavour and texture. Fried Gnocchi with Parmesan Cheese Serves 4 250 grams gnocchi, bought from a supermarket for about one Euro is fine! 2 tablespoons dried parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon black pepper, finely ground 1. Place gnocchi in a polythene food bag. 2. Add parmesan cheese and shake to coat the gnocchi as evenly as possible. 3. Pour olive oil into a frying pan and place on heated hob. 4. Add gnocchi and agitate in the pan to coat gnocchi with oil. 5. Fry until slightly browned on the outside with a crispy coat. 6. Serve sprinkled with black pepper.

Putting Almanzora on the map THE Almanzora Valley is being put on the tourism map thanks to the efforts of local businessmen. Recent initiatives by the Association of Tourism Entrepreneurs of the Almanzora are beginning to bear fruit, which they hope will ripen into a tourist boom. But first they need to put the valley into the minds of movers and shakers in the tourism business from far and wide. Now the first steps have been taken, as the association welcomed a group of agents from British tour companies. Working closely with local town halls, the association concentrated on guiding
the group to hidden gems tucked away in various corners of the province - and of course focusing on Almanzora and its environs. In the best tradition of the travel industry, the idea was to lay on activities to give the agents a taste of some of the experiences available in the area. Better known attractions like the Marble Interpretation Center, the Macael Quarries, the Ibañez Museum and the mining towns of Seron and the Menas were not ignored. But more than 20 other activities gave the group a taste of the variety of experiences available to satisfy a
range of different tastes. These included a visit to the Frida de Sufli food factory, a pottery workshop in Alfareria Los Puntas de Albox, a bread workshop using a wood oven in Oria, visiting a Taberno farm to milk a goat, as well as seeing how the cheese is made in a traditional way at the Serones Artesano cheese factory and much more. As a result of this initiative, the tourism entrepreneurs expect to receive several thousand new visitors who will experience and learn about the diversity offered by the Almanzora Valley - and give the whole area an economic boost.

Businesses get €220,186 boost ALMERIA’S Ministry of Employment and Business has invested €220,186 in the four main commercial centres of the province, located in Adra, Albox, Almeria and Cuevas del Almanzora.
The move was announced by the General Director of Commerce of the Junta de Andalucia, Raul Perales Acedo, who said that it will help to boost local businesses and shops.
The money will also be valuable for sales promotion initiatives, marketing, the hiring of managers, as well as improvements to public spaces and urban furniture where the businesses are located. Mr Acedo said that helping business ‘is a strategic priority for the Andalucian government, as it represents 12.8 per cent of the GDP of the region. “It has a turnover of more
than €85 million, with more than 140,000 companies and 517,000 jobs.” Mr Acedo also stressed of the need to maintain a balance of assisting small, medium and large businesses alike, and to help them modernise to compete with online companies. “We would like to remind consumers that buying goods from local traders boosts the economic wealth and employment of our municipali-

learn about their concerns and needs, and plans for the future.
Region enjoys road revamp THE Diputacion de Almeria has inve s te d €8 million to improve the road network of the Almanzora region s inc e 2012, a s re ve a le d by Councillor for Development, Oscar Liria. This funding ha s re s ulte d in 43 projects being carried out to enhance the road connectivity of the area. Oscar Liria highlighted in a state-
ment that every effort has been made to keep more than 1,200 kilometres of the provincial network in ‘perfect condition,’ because ‘it is vital for the economic and social development of the localities.’ Mr Liria also said that the works helped to prevent an exodus of people from Almanzora, by providing better conditions for working people
to get around. Among the 43 projects over the last few years have been works to repair roads after rain damage, expansion and surface improvements. Six times over limit POLICE gave chase to a zigzagging driver who was six-times over the limit. Local Police in Huercal-Overa spotted a car being driven dangerously and swerving onto the wrong side of the road. When they gave chase, with lights flashing and siren blaring, the driver refused to stop. The pursuit lasted for about two kilometres before police managed to stop the driver by blocking his way with their car. An alcohol test showed the man to be six times over the limit. He has now beencharged with crimes against road safety.

Money extracted from mining companies ALMERIA’S Delegate of Employment, Miguel Angel Tortosa, has announced that the companies who are mining in the quarries of Macael are to be required to provide bank guarantees for their contracts. This is because the companies have agreed to provide €11.3 million for the environmental restoration of the mountain range, and yet have only stumped up €346,000 so far. Mr Tortosa has referred to legislation which states that ‘any mining operator must provide the guarantees for environmental restoration so that the land can be replenished to its natural state.’
The mining companies have so far extracted 68.7 per cent of the quarries’ resources, which is an equivalent of €11.3 million of bank guarantees. The authorities have also decided to demand the payment of bank guarantees on the basis of square-metres occupied, and not quantity extracted. Mr Tortosa has been surprised by criticism received from the mining sector, as the policy is the same for all quarries in Almeria. Nevertheless, Mr Tortosa says the changes are still open to negotiation and discussion.

The best ways to garden in the heat of summer GRAEME TYRRELL THE sweltering Mediterranean midsummer days are not the time to be out working in the garden. The Spanish did not have the afternoon siesta to be lazy, rather it was a clever way to rest during the most difficult time to work outside. An afternoon rest enabled staying up late at night and getting up early in the morning to enjoy the best parts of the summer days. In summer, most outdoor gardening and farm work in Spain is done in the early morning from first light until midday. After that it is time to freshen up and prepare for lunch and a siesta. The siesta gives a much needed rest in the hot and humid afternoons. When I first came to Spain I would work through the afternoon but soon found out that it is so exhausting. It is far better to work in the cooler mornings, and if necessary the evening, than attempt to work in the summer afternoon heat. The best plan for sustainable gardenVDUE to the present financial climate in Spain, more people can’t afford to buy and are being forced to rent accommodation. However nice the property may be, it never quite feels like home. Out-dated spaces or small corridors can be depressing to live in, but you are hesitant to do anything to improve it in case it effects the deposit return when you leave. Here are a few tips on how

In this way the garden can be a refuge to visit and enjoy in summer with only basic maintenance and harvesting of produce to be done at the most appropriate time to enjoy the
work. I find any watering is best done in the evening as the water applied has time to soak into the soil and potting mixes in containers more deeply overnight. Morning applications can evaporate quickly before having the chance to penetrate.
Other priorities can mean that it is not always possible to water when it is the ideal time so applying a minimum amount of water is worthwhile to save your plants no matter what time of day. If you need to water during the midday period, you will need to be careful to apply water to the soil rather than the
foliage and make sure that the water you are applying is about the natural air temperature. Hoses can have extremely hot water when first turned on if they are stored in the sun and some underground-stored water can be quite cold. These extremes are not good for your plants. Make sure the water you apply is a suitable temperature and if not find a way to correct the water temperature such as using a watering can to regulate it. To me, the morning is the best time to harvest any fruit and vegetables that may be ready in summer. The cooler overnight temperatures seem to freshen most produce and most are crisper and turgid. If you wait until the sun gets hot they are much more limp and softer and often loose some of their flavour. Most flowers are at their best in the morning. The Day lilies have done especially well this year so I collect them to decorate the house for the day and to add to the salad. After that, the rest of the day is to enjoy the summer by finding places to keep cool and enjoy a afternoon siesta.
Changing rooms you can achieve a quick make-over, without breaking the bank or upsetting the landlord. The first step is to take a long look at your new abode. Study the colour of the walls, the flooring and the amount of
light in the room. Decide what style of interior design appeals to you. Flicking through magazines can help with ideas. If you are lucky enough to have more or less a blank canvas to work with, white walls and a tiled
floor, then you are halfway there. On the other hand, if you are greeted with garish paint effects and terracotta floors, don’t despair. Once you have decided on the look you are trying to achieve, talk to the landlord.
Ask his permission to paint the walls, if necessary say you will return them to the existing colour when you leave. Use the opportunity to suggest you may need shelves but will use adhesive wall hooks. He can only say no!

If there are existing hooks in the wall use them to hang mirrors and pictures of your own. If not a large free-standing mirror can give the illusion of space as well as serving to check your appearance. Old terracotta flooring can always be disguised by some large rugs chosen to match your colour scheme. They will also reduce the coldness, visually and physically. Experiment with lighting by introducing both table and free-standing lamps. Candles will help to create an ambience. If there are shelves, use them to display photographs and trinkets. Putting things you love on display will make the place feel homelier. Curtains are the easiest part of the furnishings to replace. Natural colours of material will help to give the illusion of space. However, remember the objective of having window covering. Make sure the fabric is lined or heavy enough to prevent you being woken at the crack of dawn by the light entering your room. House plants help to make a room look more lived in. If struggling for space maybe a window box will provide the same impression.

A FEW weeks ago I received an email from a trainer in Houston Texas, Jason Vasconi he had heard of my work through the late Dick Russell who was coming over to Mallorca to teach a workshop. He wrote: Hello David, My name is Jason Vasconi, and I am a dog trainer living in Dickinson, TX USA. I learned about socialising dogs with the late Dick Russell, 13 years ago, and now hold a dog socialisation class that attracts anywhere from 80 to 120 dogs every Saturday morning. It may be the largest dog socialisation class in the world. From what I know, your influence on Dick was what gave him the knowledge and confidence to social-
ize dogs on a large scale. I am teaching a workshop on Mallorca from June 14-16. We fly out to go home on June 21. After the workshop my wife and I plan on doing some sightseeing around Spain. I am not sure exactly where you are located or even if your schedule would permit, but I would love to meet you. Let me know what you think. Barbara is a delight; she certainly knows the canine industry inside out and is full of laughter. It was my pleasure to meet this oneoff lady. We had a great night, when I left them I had learned much from them and have not laughed like this for years. So what is canine socialisa-

I have been involved in dog training for over 65 years during which time I have used methods which I was taught in the Israeli police and some which I invented for my own working systems. All those involved in the UK canine industry really have to thank the late Barbara Woodhouse who, in the 1960’s-70’s, introduced dog training with her famous phrase ‘walkies,’ and in my opinion Barbara a pioneer. Prior to Barbara Woodhouse, 90 per cent of dogs were yard/garden dogs living outside, most not even in a kennel. About 25 years ago I was conducting a school in Fuengirola with a class of about 40 people and I had two dogs that
wanted to fight. One was a Rottweiler and the other a standard white poodle. I could not allow this to continue, as one can imagine people with small dogs were petrified and it meant that I would have to ask the owners to attend one of my other classes for large dogs. Next meeting, I asked the owners of these two dogs to stay behind when everyone had gone home. We then went to a very large field area and I explained that I was going to try to get these two dogs to be friendly. I muzzled both - not too tightly - and asked the owners to stand with me and promise not to speak or call their dogs. The hunter went off first and as I suspected chased after the Rottweiler, which after five
minutes was laying on the ground panting whilst the hunter was jumping around. At this stage I removed the muzzles and then they sniffed at each other and became friendly. We then went for a walk and I invited the owners to call and praise their dogs. From that day on they never fought again and always came back when called. I am an Honorary member of the British Police Canine Services and about 25 years ago George Grayson, a big respected name in the canine world, and I headed the police forum which was set up to enable police officers to exchange ideas. There were so many characters and friendly fights but one guy, Dick Russell, did not believe in ‘that’ mad dogman in Spain letting dogs off leads to fight. A few months later Dick had obtained a film of my work and announced he owed me a public apology. He was using my method, said it changed dogs and that I had brought a new ethos into the dog world. Dick changed his school to free socialisation only. My visitor Jason was one of the breed and simply wanted to meet me and ask how I developed the system. What a great man you are Jason, and again thank you for travelling to meet me. I have written this article for the public is to impress upon you the importance of socialisation, the younger the better.
Ticked off PET owners should regularly check pets for fleas and ticks, but this becomes more important during the summer months when they are spending more time outdoors. It is very difficult to prevent your dog’s exposure to ticks. They can attach themselves when you take your dog for a walk, especially in wooded areas or amongst long grass and bushes. They insert their mouths under the skin of the dog, then proceed to feed on the animal’s blood. Removing ticks takes great care. The best method is using a pair of fine tweezers to grab the tick as near as you can to the skin of the dog pulling steadily without any twists. Once removed clean the area with alcohol. Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of them by either dropping in alcohol or flushing down the toilet. Your vet will happily give you advice if you are worried. If left unattended, ticks can cause severe diseases in dogs. The most commonly known is Lyme Disease, which can cause arthritis and swelling of the joints .

Spanish car industry hoping for US-EU trade agreement
THE Spanish car industry is anxiously waiting for the outcome of talks between the US and EU officials to be made public.
US president Donald Tr u m p h a s s a i d t h a t t h e discussions will be largely focused on tariffs, with him threatening a substantial increase to as much as 25 per cent. At the moment the US charges just 2.5 per cent on cars compared to the 10 per cent EU nations impose on imports. This is a situation President Trump sees as unfair and if talks fail, the prospect of having to pay higher tariffs could hit the Spanish car industry hard. Speaking to reporters at the White House,
Trump said car tariffs are ‘the big one’ when it comes to US-EU trade disputes. Spain is the second largest car manufacturer in the world and it also has a significant autoparts sector. Any move that hits the European car industry in general is almost certain to affect the Spanish one too. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was due to meet Trump yesterday (Wednesday) to discuss trade after the US imposed higher tariffs on steel and a l u m i n i um.

Electric car sales growth slows THE first six months of the year saw relatively poor growth in sales of electric cars, as a lack of charging points started to hit the expansion of the sector. Even though registrations of electric cars increased by 33 per cent across Europe, when compared to the 54 per cent rise in the same period of 2017 it can be seen as a disappointing result. Although there was relatively strong growth in Europe’s biggest market, Germany, poorer figures from the UK and other countries dragged the total down. The UK saw 10 per cent growth compared to Germany’s 64 per cent, with Spain recording 45 per cent more sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids. Consulting firm EY, which produced the figures, pointed out that although 33 per cent growth still sounds impressive, it is from a low base. EY partner Peter Fuss said: “Electric cars remain a niche product for now. Charging infrastructure remains inadequate and the models currently available mostly don’t offer a good enough range.”

Added is a wider diffuser and vertical air inlets below the rear lights with three horizontal fins each.

Driving the machine, Audi has a range of petrol engines in various performance levels, paired either with the six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The basic car, called the 40 TFSI, uses a 194bhp 2.0-litre, while a 245bhp 2.0-litre powers the 45 TFSI. The top of the range TT’s 2.0-litre engine generates 302bhp, slightly down on the current version because of a new particulate filter. It will sprint from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. Prices have not been released, but are thought to be about 5 per cent higher than the present version.

This engine is smooth and responsive, with a 0-100 kph time of 10.2 seconds, top speed of 203 kph (126 mph), and fuel economy impressive at 26.3 kpl (74.4 mpg). Emissions are low at 100 g/km. The steering is accurate and the suspension set-up provides poised cornering and a supple
ride, with only larger potholes catching it out. The 308 SW styling, while not a head-turner, does look elegant and the cabin is nicely designed. A large touch-screen operates most controls. One unusual feature is the main dials set slightly above the smaller-than-usual steering wheel. While giving better vision for taller drivers, others may find they get just a partial view. The front sports seats give good side support and rear seating is comfortable and
roomy. The boot is large at 660 litres and expands to a whopping 1,770 litres by dropping the rear seats which

THE estate car is still a popular choice for family and business use and the latest Peugeot 308 SW takes on formidable opposition in a keenly-contested marketplace. However, the 308 SW (Station Wagon ) was revamped and upgraded last year and is well set to take on rivals such as Volkswagen, Ford, Vauxhall and Skoda. The 308 SW facelift gives it a sharper front-end look and the equipment upgrades highlight its value for money. Murray slides down ANDY MURRAY is now the British men’s number 23 after he dropped to 839 in the world rankings following his injury problems. He has only played three matches since then, winning one at Eastbourne last month. Murray is due to return to action at the Citi Open, which starts in Washington on July 30. He also hopes to play Masters level events in Toronto and Cincinnati before the US Open, which begins on August 27. Murray will be able to enter the Masters events under the exemption available to players coming back from longterm injury. His current position in the rankings sees him alongside part-time US College and Challenger Tour players. Team Sky rivalry gears WITH Geraint Thomas continuing to show his world class ability in this year ’s Tour de France, the question of him going for the outright win ahead of teammate Chris Froome is getting louder and louder. Thomas retained the overall lead going into this final week, but has been careful not to say anything that will rock Team Sky’s boat. Thanks in part to its massive budget that lures top r i d e r s , Te a m S k y h a s b e come expert at managing intra-team rivalries.
RIDING HIGH: Geraint Thomas will not give up the yellow jersey easily. Last year, Mikel Landa appeared to be the strongest c l i m b e r i n t h e To u r a n d hinted strongly that he wished he had the freedom to ride his own race. Of course there was also Froome’s obvious frustration in 2012, when he had to give top billing to Bradley Wiggins when he felt he was better in the

Nevertheless, Team Sky has never dealt with a leadership dilemma this deep into a Tour. Geraint Thomas has the yellow jersey and is showing no signs of tailing off in the last stages of the race. At 32 years of age he will be aware that such an opportunity will not come around many more times, and it is interesting that Team Sky have not yet designated Froome as their main man. It may well be a resultsbased decision, and as Thomas is out of contract this autumn, he could be forgiven for riding for himself.

Bellew and Usyk square up BRITON Tony Bellew and Ukranian Oleksandr Usyk both say they are ‘ready’ to fight each other. Usyk, 31, became the first man to hold all four world cruiserweight titles: WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF, when he beat Murat Gassiev on Saturday to win the inaugural World Boxing Super Series. After the fight, Bellew tweeted: ‘Usyk I was born ready. Let’s get this done.’ The Olympic 2012 gold medallist, who has won all of his 15 professional fights, replied: ‘I’m also ready.’ Bellew, 35, has beaten compatriot David
Haye at heavyweight in his past two fights, and his promoter Eddie Hearn says talks about a fight against Usyk will take place this week. “Tony has felt fantastic up around the 15st weight and I’m not sure he will make cruiser again, but I know with Usyk’s desire to move to heavyweight it certainly wouldn’t be a dealbreaker,” he told Sky Sports. While Bellew is keen on the fight, he also has WBC lightweight champion Adonis Stevenson in his sights, who he was defeated by in 2013. “If I face him and win, I’d have beaten every man I have ever fought in a ring,” said Bellew.
