Former Land Rover project manager David Dibble, 60, bought a house in El Chopo, Arboleas with wife Mandy 15 years ago, and the couple have since spent around six months per year there. But five years ago the British owners of the adjoining property sold to a German man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and it was then that the problems started for the pair from Lichfield, Staffordshire. “It’s horrendous, we can’t sunbathe out back and we can’t hang our washing out at the front due to the putrid smell,” explained David, speaking ex-

Torres added that the wait times between legal proceedings are an ‘added punishment’ for Gabriel’s parents who have repeatedly requested the cremation of their son which has been put on hold during the case. “The truth is I do not know what we are waiting for,” Torres said. The court hearing follows new evidence emerging from the autopsy, which has been kept under a secrecy order since March but could - at least partially - come to light later this week.

Great ball of fire! SCIENTISTS in Almeria have detected a piece of asteroid travelling some 66,000 kilometres per hour over the skies of Andalucia. The team of astronomers based at an observatory in Calar Alton spotted the space rock as it shot through night skies over the weekend. Professor Jose Maria Madiedo, the head of the SMART project which tracks objects from outer space entering the Earth’s atmosphere, confirmed the sighting. Scientists said the phenomenon trailing light, which gave it a ‘fireball’ look, was caused by a fragment of rock splitting from the main object. The asteroid reportedly travelled around 93 kilometres above the Earth’s surface. It passed over Huelva Province in western Andalucia before flying over the Atlantic Ocean where it flew around 43 kilometres above the sea. Astronomers in Granada and Toledo also sighted the space debris.

A lawyer acting for forward Reeco Hackett-Fairchild is reportedly trying to change his bail conditions after a Spanish judge ordered him to hand over his passport. But if the appeal fails he and fellow suspect Olusola Odejayi, 26, could face a month-long court battle as they fight to clear their names. Hackett-Fairchild’s team mate Karlan Ahearne-Grant, 20, who was also held in the wake of the allegations, is being probed for a privacy offence but has been allowed to return to the UK. The three were last week arrested after a 19-year-old girl’s parents told police she had been attacked in a Cala de Bou hotel near San Antonio while on a family break. They are believed to have partied at the Ocean Beach club before meeting the unnamed teen and a female friend at a bar, inviting them back to their hotel. Investigators were told that

The admission came after judge Carmen Robles Zamora earlier described their version of

events as “credible and coherent,” and said there exist “reasonable doubts” that a rape had taken place. She said in a written ruling justifying her decision to grant bail: “Although the victim’s statement has credibility and was made when she was very upset, the report by the forensic doctor does not show any type of injury or even bruising on her thighs and genital area when the victim has stated she was a virgin.” Ahearne-Grant’s phone has been sent to Madrid as police try to recover deleted videos that could prove crucial to the enquiry, and the striker must visit the Spanish Embassy in London twice per month as part of his bail conditions. Hackett-Fairchild has made 12 appearances for Charlton, scoring twice, while AhearneGrant has played for the League One club 69 times, netting seven times. A Charlton Athletic official told UK media: “The club have been made aware and are looking into this matter. Due to the ongoing investigation we will not be commenting any further at this stage.”

THE corpse of a man picked up by coast guard patrol boat in the Alboran Sea has arrived in Almeria City’s port. The remains, found by the Salvamento Maritimo while personnel were conducting searches of small boats at sea last Sunday, arrived at the harbour at around 10pm that evening.
Three held THREE people aged between 37 and 48 have been arrested in connection with the theft of more than one ton of solid and 500 litres of liquid fertilizers in Vera. A 48-year-old was arrested on 13 counts of robbery and farmers aged 37 and 39 were held on suspicion of handling stolen goods.
Tyre probe AN Adra schoolteacher has gone to the police after claiming he arrived at his car to find its tyres slashed. The staff member, from the Funtesantilla secondary school in Puente del Rio, told the Guardia Civil he feared the vandalism was a threat, with Almeria authorities adding that they were investigating.
‘Fix’ claim THE captain of UD Almeria has been arrested in connection with match fixing allegations while trying to board a plane to Italy. Jorge Morcillo has played with the side as a centre since July 2015 when he signed to play for three years with his contract due to expire on Sunday July 1.

MIGRANTS rescued from the Mediterranean Sea and turned away by Italy and Malta have been granted 45 days’ special permission to stay in Spain. It comes after humanitarian ship Aquarius and two other vessels docked in Valencia with 630 people, including 123 unaccompanied children and seven pregnant women, aboard. Spain’s new socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, had earlier stepped in to help, insisting his country had a duty to help prevent “a humanitarian catastrophe.” The migrants, who come from 26 countries, had spent eight days at sea after being picked up from overcrowded rubber dinghies off the coast of Libya. “The weather was very bad unfortunately, and the sea was
rough,” said Sophie Beau of aid organisation SOS Mediterranee. “So people are in a bad state... and they are really relieved to come onto safe land at the moment.” Red Cross official Pedro Redon said that the migrants received food and hygiene kits, psychological help and medical assistance, while French President Emmanuelle Macron has pledged his government will help Spain deal with them. The Aquarius sparked a diplomatic row after Italy and Malta argued that the boat fell under the other’s jurisdiction. Valencia mayor Joan Ribo described Italy’s decision to turn the boat away as “inhuman,” before Spain’s Maritime Rescue said it had saved an additional 1,290 people over the weekend alone.
Drugs haul GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized some 1,200 grams of coca leaves hidden among luggage being checked in Almeria airport. A report was subsequently filed against a passenger in connection with the find, with the plant used as the base ingredient for cocaine and crack cocaine and illegal to import.
Scam warning RESIDENTS have been warned of a new mobile telephone scam. Phone owners are urged to beware of the fraudulent number 662 991 273, which appears to be connected to the provider Vodaphone, but is a con number which will call back repeatedly. Upon answering, threatening messages are issued or there is silence, therefore it is highly advisable to block the number.

Officials sent ALMERIA’S Provincial Court has found 13 out of 15 people on trial in connection with a bribery probe guilty of accepting payments to fast track paperwork for foreigners. The court reached its verdict after the prosecution and defence reached a plea bargain agreement which saw penalties reduced for those charged. The main defendant will go to prison for seven months and 15 days and will pay a €6,000 fine for falsifying documents.

Police officers among those found guilty have been disqualified from public employment for one year, 10 months and 15 days. The court heard officials in Almeria’s Foreigners Office took payments who in turn granted nonSpanish people residency cards without them having to attend the usual appointments. Prosecutors told the court the main defendant had also taken €300 payments from companies with tax debts to settle their bills.

Night of fire IT’S among the year’s most anticipated events. And as the summer solstice approaches, Spain is gearing up to celebrate La Noche de San Juan (St John’s Eve). The annual midsummer party on the shortest night of the year sees Spaniards honour the birth date of San Juan - John the Baptist in English and many parts of the country have their own traditions based heavily on the purifying and cleansing elements of fire and water. In coastal regions revellers tend to head for the beach, constructing hogueras, or bonfires, around which they eat, drink and dance before typically having a midnight ocean dip. Effigies representing Judas Escariot might also be thrown into the flames, while in some areas party-goes make wishes known as juras before leaping through the fire three times and heading for the sea to cleanse their sins for the year ahead. In Cataluña, the Valencian Conmmunity and the Balearics, Saint John is known as Sant Joan and these areas are particularly well-known for
their fireworks displays and special foods like the Coca de Sant Joan cake. Catalans tend to celebrate with correfoc (firerunning) displays and the building of human pyramids dubbed castellers, while in Alicante elaborate figures are burned before the flames are extinguished by firefighters who then soak onlookers in a ritual known as the Banya. And in Ciutadella, Menorca, the party lasts for a week and sees the island’s horses dancing and marching through the crowds who later engage in mock battles using hazelnut shells as weapons. Lanjaron in Granada sees the celebrations descend into a giant water fight, and in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, goat herders bring their animals to the fishing village’s beach before dunking them in the sea. A custom particular to San Pedro Manrique, Castilla y Leon, sees men walking barefoot over hot coals while carrying a woman on their backs. It is a truly magical night and not to be missed.

OUR VIEW Celebrate San Juan THE summer solstice is celebrated in the UK with the arrival at Stonehenge of Druids and hippies celebrating what is the shortest night of the year. In Spain, a couple of days later, a very similar event takes place but theoretically it’s all about Christianity and the celebration of the feast day of John the Baptist. Hardly anyone living in southern Spain can possibly ignore the excitement and noise of the Noche de San Juan which takes place this Saturday. It’s all about fire and water and certainly harks back to pagan times as bonfires are lit and in many places lanterns are let off on the beach. Fire purifies and water recuperates so the two elements are vital parts of the celebrations which see revellers eating, drinking, dancing and in many cases jumping over bonfires until dawn. If you have the constitution that allows you to join in the fun, then it is a great night out which generally, like many Spanish celebrations, sees little trouble although most towns ensure that the main areas are well policed and that paramedics are on hand. Unlike Britain where we just burn a guy on fireworks night, different towns have some major figures (often satirical images of historical celebrities) produced which are set fire to and there will also be salvos of fireworks to help light up the night sky. If you are shy and retiring, take a sleeping pill and some cocoa and have an early night, alternatively join in the fun and become one with the locals.

The disgruntled employees plan industrial action in holiday hotspots including Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca. And one official said that some of those involved could even walk out of their jobs if they continue to be ignored by national air navigation manager ENAIRE and the new Spanish government.
But they were not signed by the mayor. “I have written to the authorities but they have not been getting back to me,” added David. “It’s been going on for five years but they say it is too expensive to remove the animals and there is nowhere to put them.
Holiday threat The employees are demanding a different timetable amid complaints they are forced to work seven days out of every eight, with a combination of morning and night shifts meaning they rarely see their families, or they are exhausted when they do. They also claim that the conditions could cause accidents if staff become over-tired. Representative Raul Tobaruela told The Sun:
“The noise pollution, lack of pest control, contamination and illegal construction have all been disregarded by Arboleas Council. “We just want someone to help us.” Arboleas Council has not responded to a comment request.

It was carnage.” Others revealed that “people were smoking weed,” and “there were big white double beds around the pool too and I saw people all over each other on them.” A reveller who paid €1,600 for the all-inclusive experience described the experience as “really, really disgusting.” A man who abandoned ship in Ibiza said: “I will never ever
again go on such a trashy trip. The crowd was very Geordie Shore. Utter rip off. “I know of drug dealers making an absolute killing and running out as the demand was so high. We left after three days as it was a joke.” Those involved in the show have not been accused of anything illegal. Anchored Cruises failed to respond to a comment request.

Gun attack by Matt Ford AN ex-drug lord who orchestrated a Breaking Bad-style drugs plot from his luxury Alicante villa has been shot outside a Greater Manchester school in what detectives say was a targeted attack. Neil Strong, 36, is said to be in a serious condition after being wounded in the ‘upper body’ on Harris Drive in Unsworth, Bury. Investigators were alerted to the attempted hit after residents reported hearing gun shots near a local primary school. Mr Strong is believed to have driven himself to Fairfield General Hopital, Bury, in a grey van before officers arrived at the scene. The vehicle reportedly had one punctured tyre and what appeared to be a gunshot hole in the passenger door when it arrived to the hospital car park, where it was later cordoned off by police. Chief Inspector Phil Spurgeon, of Greater Manchester
Police’s Bury Borough, said: “Our investigation remains in its early stages but I can confirm that from the information we have we are treating this as a targeted attack, and there is not believed to be any wider threat to the community.” Mr Strong was in 2014 jailed with three others as the leader of a gang setting up a drugs factory in a detached house in nearby Radcliffe. His associates Damian Vose, 38, from Radcliffe, was handed a 32-month jail term while Paul Cuthbert, 45, from Bury, and Daniel Pinder, 33, from Manchester, each received 30month sentences. The cartel was caught redhanded in the wake of a National Crime Agency (NCA) covert surveillance operation while plotting to make €1.8 millionworth of amphetamines. They bought barrels of chemicals to produce the drugs and the property was raided when Mr Strong flew in from Spain to oversee the process.

ENVIRONMENTAL officials have said they are in the process of drawing up new sustainability plans for the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Raul Enriquez, of the Junta de Andalucia, has chaired a meeting which sought to put together new measures to ensure conservation at the site.
The new Sustainable Development Plan is set to see the Junta work with companies, workers and public officials to promote local economic initiatives. Enriquez said the plans were designed to contain real, achievable projects that will provide opportunities to boost the economy and protect the park.

He must also advise the authorities ahead of any trip abroad and is banned from carrying more than £3,000 in cash. An appeal to lift the order was turned down in January 2017, while in 2016 a Land Rover was blown up on the same street where he was shot last Monday.

Preparing for Brexit and residency in Spain The Brexit transition period agreed in March gives British expatriates and those wishing to move to Spain more time to prepare. This was welcome news, but the clock is still ticking to get ready in time, particularly where paperwork is involved. The key issue for many people is residence - If you are already living here, will there be any problems with you staying after Brexit? If you are still arranging your move to Spain, how can you secure residence in time? The UK and EU27 have committed to maintain existing residency rights for Britons and EU nationals who are “lawfully residing” within either area before the withdrawal date and they can continue “to live, work or study as they currently do under the same conditions as under Union law”. Although the official Brexit date is 29th March 2019, the transition period effectively ‘pauses’ Brexit until 31st December 2020 to

If you are settled in Spain before the end of 2020, you should keep the right to stay there for as long as you remain resident. But what does lawful residency mean in practice? How close can you get to demonstrating that in time? Although December 2020 may seem some way away, it is advisable to start the process as soon as possible rather than risk being caught in an administrative
queue of others trying to do the same thing as the deadline approaches. Beyond Brexit, we do not yet know how acquiring residency, visas and permits will work, but can expect this to be less straightforward than today. As a foreigner living in Spain, there are a number of things you should do anyway to register here, regardless of Brexit. All EU/EEA nationals staying in Spain more than three months should have the residence certificate Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión (also known as Certificado de Registro Comunitario). If you spend more than 183 days here you are also obliged to register with your local municipal registry (Padrón Municipal). Residents (and Spanish property owners) should have the NIE fiscal identification number. Of course, if you meet any of the criteria to be tax resident, you
also should have formally registered with the Spanish tax office and submitted annual income tax and wealth tax (if applicable) returns. Longer-term residents of Spain can take further steps. If you can demonstrate continuous legal residence in Spain for at least five years you can apply for permanent residency. If you can do this for 10 years, Spanish nationality is an option - but you would have to renounce your UK nationality first. There may be other steps you can take to help demonstrate your Spanish residence before the Brexit. Once you are settled in an EU country, existing partners and close family members will be able to join you, even after Brexit. Also, freedom of movement is still under discussion. FOUR Nigerians have been sentenced to up to 37 years in prison for prostituting three female compatriots and threatening them with voodoo. Two of the victims were minors and were brought to Spain under the false promise of marrying Spaniards, according to a Madrid provincial court. Upon arrival in Madrid, captors threatened the girls and women with voodoo rituals into paying astronomical amounts for debts they supposedly owed to the gang, the court confirmed. The criminals moved the victims across borders to maximise their returns. One of the victims was forced to prostitute herself in a hostess club in Almeria City, according to the ruling. The court imposed 37-yearand-three-month sentences on Osomwenyenmwen Omorodion and Mcdon Igbinidum, both aged 35 and Loveth Ada, 44 for human trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors and sexual immigration. The fourth culprit, Supreme Lord Asemota, 40, received 32-year and-nine months.

Brit died of alcohol poisoning A BRITISH holidaymaker died from alcohol poisoning after a Canary Islands pub crawl. NHS pharmacy worker Paula Bishop, 37, was found dead in her hotel room after she accidentally drank too much wine and beer on the first day of her break with husband of 11 years Stuart, an enquiry heard. The couple from Ince-inMakerfield, near Wigan in Greater Manchester, headed out for the pub crawl in Fuerteventura soon after their arrival. Mrs Bishop drank ‘a few small beers,’ two small glasses of wine and four I r i s h c o ff e e s - a r o u n d 1 5 units of alcohol equivalent to seven pints of lager and died from heart failure triggered by the ‘acute alcohol toxicity.’ Mr Bishop told the court in Bolton that he had no recollection of her being excessively drunk or unsteady on her feet as she went to bed on October 20 last year. They had booked the trip a month after returning from Cuba and arrived to their accommodation in Spain around 11.15am. Mr Bishop said in a statement: “For the remaind e r o f t h e d a y, a f t e r n o o n and evening she was fine, she had a sleep in the afternoon, had something to eat at tea time and was sending pictures to family on her phone and was in touch with loved ones. “This was a perfect start to what we anticipated would be a perfect holiday.

HOLIDAY HORROR: Paula died on the first day of her break with husband Stuart. She had a few small beers, two small glasses of wine, and three or four Irish coffees - between 10-15 units. “We went to bed between 10 and 11 and crashed out. I was tired and hadn’t had a sleep in the day time. My last memory of Paula was going back to the room nothing out of the ordinary. “She had poured a couple of glasses of orange juice which is something she would usually do if she was preparing to go to bed. But I woke up sometime after midnight and found Paula lying on the floor propped up against a chest of drawers. I touched her belly and it was cold and then tried to find a pulse. Her legs had changed colour. “I ran down to the reception area straight away and brought up a night time security guard who then alerted paramedics. “When I first looked at her, I thought straight away that she had passed away and my automatic reaction was to get help. I shook her and tried to speak to her but got nothing. Para-
medics attended and tried resuscitation but she could not be saved. “Her death came as an enormous shock - she was a wonderful person who was full of life and will be greatly missed by her friends and family.” A Spanish toxicologist said that Mrs Bishop had four grammes of alcohol per litre of blood in her system, while Dr Naveen Sharmaat from Whiston Hospital in Liverpool said the level was “fatally toxic.” Recording a verdict of alcohol related death, coroner Tim Brennand added: “Death has arisen because of a single acute overdose of alcohol on a single day on holiday rather than over a long period of time - and I make clear there is no history of alcohol abuse.” He added: “The real tragedy here is that it may well have been that both she and perhaps her husband and partner in life did not appreciate the amount of alcohol taken. “This is the tragedy of this particular case.”

A BRITISH biker has been killed after a head-on smash in northern Spain. The victim was reportedly on holiday with a friend when he was involved in the accident in Tineo, Asturias. Named by the initials AJF, he is believed to have been 40 years old and died instantly in the crash on the TI-6 road. He was travelling behind his companion, who was also riding a motorcycle, when he crossed into the oncoming lane. A family car with two adults and three children was travelling in the opposite direction and ploughed into the bike,
sending the rider several metres into the air. No-one else was harmed, and a woman who had been sat in the passenger seat later said: “He was totally on our side of the road, by the time we saw him he was already on top of us and he didn’t change direction.” The second motorcyclist arrived back at the scene minutes later to look for the victim, who he described as “a very good friend.” They had arrived to Santander by ferry a week earlier and had travelled through the Picos de Europa mountains before starting their return journey to the Cantabrian capital.

Raising the bar BUDGET airline Ryanair has called for tighter restrictions on airport alcohol sales, including a booze ban before 10am. It comes after a flight from Dublin to Ibiza was forced to land in Paris when three members of a ‘drunk’ party of 20 became disruptive and were led off the plane by French police at Beauvais airport. The captain apologised to other passengers, which he said included children, after the groups’ rowdy behaviour sparked a two-hour 40-minute delay, and added that the culprits had been drinking at Dublin airport. Ryanair official Ryan Kiely said afterwards: “We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. “This is now a matter for local police.” He added: “the incident is exactly why we are calling for significant changes to prohibit
the sale of alcohol at airports, such as a two-drink limit per passenger and no alcohol sales before 10am. “It is incumbent on the airports to introduce these preventative measures to curb excessive drinking and the problems it creates, rather than allowing passengers to drink to excess before their flights.” The airline added: “It’s completely unfair that airports can profit from the unlimited sale of alcohol to passengers and leave the airlines to deal with the safety consequences.” The Irish carrier is now reportedly warning travellers at the start of flights they could be fined more than €2,000 if they drink alcohol bought in duty free on board. Low-cost rival easyJet has also joined the calls to ban duty free alcohol from flights, after three women believed to be erotic dancers earlier this year triggered a mid-air punch-up after downing vodka.

hotels and paying in cash, sometimes via third parties. He also used mobile phones dubbed ‘burners,’ which he quickly dumped to avoid being traced. Birmingham Crown Court heard how the haulage boss lived a lavish lifestyle, raking in up to €85,000 per week and constructing a villa in Marbella with indoor and outdoor swimming pools plus a cinema. The father-of-five drove luxury cars including Land Rovers and Mercedes and wore Rolex watches while living in five-star hotels, also living in Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands. At one point he was overheard bragging to a girlfriend: “Listen, no one can control me baby, even me dad and mum will tell ya I’m f***ing nuts.” But the ‘untouchable’ crime lord was eventually tracked down after a covert surveillance operation saw armed police raid his hideout in Lithuania last year. He was cuffed in his underpants at gunpoint and extradited to the UK, and has now been convicted of four conspiracy charges after acting as the ‘linchpin’ of the international plot. Prosecutors added that Mulvey developed a €1,100 per week cocaine habit and set up bogus haulage businesses to import ‘industrial scale’ quantities of drugs from Europe to Britain and Ireland in 2006 and 2007. He fled to Spain when 22kg of cocaine and 392kg of cannabis hidden in metal rollers and worth an estimated €45 million was intercepted

Judge Mark Wall QC said a probe had revealed 14 previous trips connected to his cabal, during which it is believed that up to 5.5 tonnes of cannabis and 300kg of cocaine entered the UK. He later transported the narcotics in mini Harley Davidson motorcycles and inflatable sea scooters. Addressing Mulvey he said: “I treat it as a representative load for the purposes of estimating the total quantity of drugs traded as a result of this conspiracy. “On the evidence presented to me at trial I conclude that the wholesale value of these drugs would have been in the region of at least £17m wholesale and £42m retail for the cocaine, and £60m retail for the cannabis.” The accused smiled at family members as the verdict was read out, as the judge continued: “You were involved in the large-scale importation of these drugs into this country
from continental Europe and its onward transportation to Ireland where doubtless it was to be sold at a great profit. “You gave evidence that you yourself have taken cocaine for many years. “You would have been acutely aware of the misery and ruined lives that this drug brings in its wake.” The National Crime Agency (NCA) said in a statement released in the wake of Mulvey’s arrest that he was traced despite changing his mobile phone on a daily basis and using unregistered SIM cards. Investigators also obtained recordings of him speaking about the murder of his Irish cousin Gerard ‘Hatchet’ Kavanagh, who in 2014 was shot dead on the Costa Del Sol. In one he was heard to say: “When we first started there was four bosses, me, Glasses, him [Kavanagh], who’s just got shot dead, and another kid.” He also spoke of how he feared assassination, saying: “The life I lead, you never know what can happen. I do what I do, people try to kill
me.” After the 10-week trial, NCA regional head Andy Quinn said: “Mr Mulvey would classify himself as an iconic, untouchable criminal. “The NCA and its partners have today proven that isn’t the case. “He obviously fled overseas following the conviction of his criminal associates and again probably thought that out-of-sight, out-of-mind for five years that the NCA would give up. “We never give up on individuals like Mr Mulvey. We have a long memory.” Five accomplices were jailed for a total of 86 years in 2009 for their parts in the plot, including lorry driver Geoffrey Edwards and transport manager Barry Phipps, Mulvey’s right hand man.
Restaurant blast LOCAL POLICE and firefighters were called out to a pizzeria in Almeria City after they were called out to tackle a suspected gas explosion. Emergency services received a call out to attend the blast on Friday after it happened in the El Zapillo
area of the city. The restaurant was closed at the time, according to reports. The area was filled with smoke following the incident. Emergency services said there were no injuries caused as a result. Initial inquires have suggested butane
gas canisters could be the cause of the explosion. Further conclusions are set to be drawn from results of a Deactivation Specialist of Explosive Devices (TEDEAX) and forensic officers’ investigation launched after the blast.

drop from the fifth floor to a balcony below and spent several days on life support at Palma’s Son Espases Hospital in the wake of the accident. Sandra later posted on Facebook: ‘Our lives will never be the same, the support we have received as a family has been amazing and is a true reflection of what a wonderful young man Jack turned out to be. ‘Jack ticked the donor box on his learner licence and it is a comfort knowing people are alive today as a result of Jack’s tragic accident. ‘Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and wishes.

Flaming hell Fire breather sets herself alight A YOUNG fire-breather has been hospitalised after setting herself ablaze during a performance in northern Spain. The woman was on stage at the Evolution Macro Show in Pradejon, La Rioja, when the dramatic incident unfolded. Video footage posted online shows her performing for revellers as she draws a flaming torch to her lips and blows fire into the air. But the flames seem to catch her chin before engulfing her entire head. She is then seen leaping from the high platform as a fire breaks out on the stage as some members of the audience scream in horror, while others seem to think it is part of her routine. RYANAIR’S Michael O’Leary has called for “urgent” actions against French air traffic control strikes that could cause chaos this summer. The low-cost airline’s CEO says thousands of flights will be disrupted, especially during the peak months of July and August, unless the staffing crisis is addressed. O’Leary said “yet again this weekend, French ATC will strike on Saturday and Sunday leading to hundreds of flights being cancelled, disrupting the holiday plans of thousands of passengers. “Many of these flights don’t even touch France, yet they will be disruptive because French ATC requires airlines to cancel overflights while they protect French domestic routes. “Europe’s airlines are also
suffering thousands of ATC delays/cancellations because of staff shortages especially in German and UK ATC providers. “Europe’s ATC providers are approaching the point of meltdown with hundreds of flights being cancelled daily, simply because they don’t have enough staff to deal with them.”
Ryanair had to cancel 1,000 flights last month, as opposed to just 43 that it cancelled in May 2017. The airline claims more than 117,000 flights were delayed in May and June, with 61 per cent due to the French air traffic control strikes. They have been striking over pay freezes and changes to sick pay.

Isle of bite 8-foot shark sparks panic by Staff Reporter THIS is the hair-raising moment that an eight-foot shark terrified sun-seekers on a Spanish beach. In the video footage, one beachgoer is heard to say in English: “It’s coming. Oh my God, I think it’s dead.” A woman then replies “No, it’s not dead,” as others shriek in the background, before adding: “Every time we go to the beach something happens.” Dozens of those gathered at the shoreline of the sandy strip - half an hour from island capital Mahon and popular with British holidaymakers - recorded the animal on their mobile phones. DASHING DAMES: Some of the dames at the recent meeting at Hostel Rural. THE Dames in Turre recently held their final meeting before the summer break at the Hostel Rural in Turre. The Dames were very proud to be able to donate generous cheques to Turre Food Bank, AECC, Stepping Stones, Asprodalba and Paws Patas. The Dames have been proud to be involved with Susana Salamanca on a programme to help women suffering domestic abuse. They also made a one-off payment to the Paul Morrison fund so he can access
treatment in Russia. The Dames also recently held their AGM when Leslie Barlow, who had been the president for many years, stood down to be replaced by Soo Wallace. The move suggests a less restrictive approach to spending following years of austerity measures by the country’s conservative People’s Party, which was ousted after six years in government in the wake of corruption allegations. Pensions have since 2014 risen by a below-inflation annual rate of 0.25 per cent. But Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s socialist PSOE party tweeted: “Now the right must allow that all pensions rise with inflation, also in times of crisis.”

The comments on Revelation TV’s discussion show Rmornings “could be considered as threatening to the dignity of the homosexual and transgender group, although there was no manifest incitation to hate against these groups by the channel that owns the programme,” said the written ruling. US olive tariffs slammed THE European Commission has blasted United States tariffs on Spanish olives. An official said in a statement: The decision by the United States Department of Commerce to impose unreasonably high and prohibitive duties anti-subsidy and anti-dumping duties on Spanish olives is simply unacceptable. “This is a protectionist measure targeting a high-quality and successful EU product popular
with US consumers.” The move follows an investigation that found olives from Spain were being sold below their fair value and boosted by subsidies. The import duties have not yet been confirmed but are set to be approved by the US International Trade Commission in July, at which point the commission would reportedly consider further action.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AND so, it begins. It should come as no surprise to anyone that one of the first pledges by Sajid Javid, the UK’s new Home Secretary, is to declare war on Theresa May’s immigration policies. After all, how dare she follow the will of most of the electorate and come down hard on all those poor unfortunate immigrants! In his opening gambit Mr Javid has vowed to introduce a major relaxation on immigration laws and to ease the cap on foreign medical staff. This of course gives him the excuse that he is simply doing it because the NHS is so seriously short of health workers (which it probably wouldn’t be if the facilities weren’t so snowed under with immigrants!). This holier than thou façade is merely an opening gambit. If you delve a little deeper, you’ll find he is also considering no longer including students in the immigration figures, reinstating legal aid for ‘most’ immigration cases; which means the public will once again be laying out untold millions to the leeching lawyers and their bleating clients. And, wait for it, suspending the rule

‘The mind truly does boggle’ that illegal immigrants can’t open a bank account! What!? Yep you ‘eard. All those poor immigrants in the country illegally, will once again be allowed to open bank accounts (I didn’t realise there was a time when they actually could!). What are they going to deposit in them? All the begged, black or stolen taxfree money they’ve managed to accrue during their time on the run from the authorities? The mind truly does boggle. Anyway, back to the foreign medical worker plans. Any new immigration laws will of course include the families. Just how far down the family line are those to be included? Aunts? Uncles? Grans and Grandads? Cousins? Bit of a grey area that (natch). Another worry is of course the standard of training of those brought in. A somewhat disquieting figure to mull over is the fact, that over the last five years, of the 669 health workers struck off or suspended, 420 had been trained abroad. This figure was released by the UCL when the GMC were, yes, you’ve guessed it, accused of racism when marking the test results. The grim truth

of the matter is, that according to a major study, at least half of those applying to work in the UK would not have the level of skills required because the competency exam is too easy. Who’s going to sort out all that ‘wheat and chaff’? When researching this information, I found it all a bit cloak and dagger to actually find any lists of those who had committed major medical mistakes, but the few I did manage to dig out sported names such as Ahluwalia, Narayana, and Abdullah. Errors included tools left inside the body, treating the wrong patient air bubbles and language problems. Can the UK’s illustrious new ‘unbiased’ Home Secretary reassure the public that this great new influx of immigrant health workers will be trained to the highest of standards, and not an incompetent bunch of dangerous second raters, let loose on an unsuspecting public simply to make Mr Javid more popular with his peers? Apple users chugged along happily with their Safari browser, while for Windows it took a whole decade for a worthy rival to emerge: Firefox. BROWSER HISTORY: Gone but not forgotten? um, SlimJet... Now late and unlamented, Internet Explorer spawned Microsoft Edge currently bundled with Windows 10. Originally barely fit-for-purpose, it is getting better. So what should you download and use for the best-possible internet experience in 2018? Google’s Chrome has by far today’s highest usage (57 per cent). One great new incentive is the automatic ad-blocker included since
February as a result of public pressure and the millions of us installing those third-party ad blockers which deprive websites of their revenue. The new Chrome’s promise is to weed out the web’s most annoying ads, full-page ads, ads with autoplaying sound and video and flashing ads. Apple’s Safari browser has followed suit. Opera is built on the Chrome ‘engine’ so will ultimately
also comply, and the domino effect continues down the line as the empire fights back and may the force be with them. Yet since Edward Snowden and now the Cambridge Analytica scandal, many of us are wary of revealing more of our browsing habits to the digital giants like Google and Apple. Of course we all know (don’t we?) that there’s a button under the History icon in our browsers which lets us delete our recent history. But the bad news is that even this won’t zap the overall record held of every single site you’ve ever visited, ever, back at Google’s HQ. For that you need DuckDuckGo not a new KFC special, but a browser for the dark side. Funded by independent donations, it has now notched up some 16 billion private searches, none of them tracked. Remember it the next time you hit the porn sites from your family computer - for medical research purposes only, naturally.
Web-wary INCOGNITO is an interesting new response to our growing concerns about being tracked online, and most browsers now offer an ‘Incognito Mode.’ But it’s still not a foolproof way to stay anonymous. A VPN can help - a Virtual Private Network, connected to so-called proxy servers to protect your identity and your data. Available to anyone for a modest fee, it’s still not a magic bullet for guaranteeing our privacy, but it can help by encrypting our data, bypassing (some) official censorship systems and more. VPNs are also popular among Britpats here for fooling location-restricted services like the BBC’s iPlayer into unlocking UK-only content. At the end of the day however, there’s only one way to stay truly anonymous these digital days. It’s called pen and paper.

S the sun beat down on my back and beads of sweat rolled from beneath my racing green helmet and into my eyes, I was close to packing in my trip along one of Spain’s most iconic Vias Verdes. Having not passed another soul for at least an hour, the early summer sun was starting to send my mind spinning. But as the burn in my thighs became almost unbearable I picked my head up from the handlebars and was instantly reminded why I had ditched four wheels for two. With the sun dipping behind the mountains along Cadiz’s Via Verde de la Sierra, the sky lit up in a fantastic pink and the sunflower fields either side of the disused rail track gently swayed with me in the breeze. For while there was more than one moment when I would rather have been comfortably sat on one of Spain’s high-speed trains, taking in the country’s disused rail network on bike - or foot - is a far more rewarding experience. For the uninitiated, the Via Verdes are a series of disused train lines which have been converted into hiking and cycling paths. In total, 2,700km of disused rail tracks cut through Spain’s countryside like Moses parting the Red Sea (I confess I have only conquered one route and it was only 36km, although I did go to one end and then back again). At points it feels unnatural that a train track ever ran through such verdant and beautiful scenery - it

And, in fact, many of the routes never did see trains trundle the tracks in the first place. Constructed during the Civil War, many thousands of kilometres of track were laid and the stations erected, but in many cases the trains were just a pipe dream that never came to roost. For the routes that were once in use, this year marks 25 years since the trains stopped rolling over their tracks after they fell into disrepair and were forgotten about. Most of the old lines have now lost their rails, however old rail sign posts and signals occasionally point to the pathways’ forgotten pasts. In total there are 123 routes of varying length and difficulty. While most are flat - requiring no technical skill or bulging leg muscles some are lengthy and thus are more

Beginning of the line A TRAIN never travelled on the Jerez-Almargen railway line in Malaga. However the pet project of dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera sparked off the Vias Verdes movement. Spanning 36 kilometres with 30 tunnels cutting through the rocky Andalucian terrain, the Jerez-Almargen route kicked off a revolution. It is the oldest greenway in Spain and currently plays host to around 300,000 tourists every year. Organisers of the scheme have said that without the publicity around the abandoned route, the concept of Vias Verdes may have never been born. “The line was surrounded in controversy,” Vía Verde de la Sierra Foundation manager María Jiménez says. “There had never even been a train there. It is now a greenway and the people of the area are now proud of it.” So while a train may have never plundered the tracks, Spain’s proud greenway network may never have come to fruition if it wasn’t for the Jerez-Almargen rail route.

Mopeds, cars and any other form of motorised vehicle are banned from the paths, making it safe and secure for families to venture out for a gentle meander. Along the way, guest houses, restaurants and cafes offer respite for those in need of some much-deserved R&R. In total 98 old railway stations have been restored as rural hotels, restaurants, cafés, rent-a-bike points, office information and small museums. But where today stands a buzzing community of outdoor thrillseekers and rural tourists, once stood abandonment and utter desolation: the decaying remains of formerly romanticised railway lines that tore across the country were an ugly stain dripped across Spain’s rural countryside.

UNUSED TRACKS: Waiting to be used. However, in 1993 the Fundación Ferrocarriles Españoles (FFE) presented its Inventory of Disused Railway Lines in Gijón. The report compared Spain’s unused railway lines and compared it to its European neighbours in France, Belgium and the UK. It concluded that nowhere else on the continent had so many unused routes carving their way through the country, waiting to be used. Spain literally had thousands of kilometres of ready-made cycling, pedestrian and horseback routes lying in wait. It was an opportunity that could not be missed, and thankfully it wasn’t. Bikes can be rented from Sesca which is situated at the start of the route. Children’s seats and separate carts are also available, for those taking the kids out and prices tend to very reasonable. It is worth bearing the terrain in mind before you set off. If starting and returning to Olvera, your return journey will be uphill, so expect the thighs to burn on your return. There are no mega hills or mountains to conquer, but the gradient is steady and more importantly long… so may pose a problem for younger or less-experienced cyclists. There are options for shorter distances along the route. It is possible to start in Coripe and pick up the route there. All in all, it is a fantastic route and there are various options to conquer it on your own, with a partner or with the entire family.

As Irish expat and cycling enthusiast David Murray explains “nothing beats the Spanish countryside. “I want to complete the entire Via Verde network by the time I’m 40,” Murray tells me at a cafe along the Cadiz route. “I’m 36 now and I have done around 1,000 kilometres of the routes so far. “Hopefully they won’t build too many more before I get to 40.” He added: “I love coming out on these routes on my bike. I take the children out on the one near our home and every time I visit a different part of Spain I make sure I check out the nearest Via Verde.

Extreme makeovers AS well as taking in the breathtaking scenery and the sheer overwhelming vastness of Spain’s outback, the Via Verde routes also contain a catalogue of architectural triumphs. In total 98 former stations have been given a face lift and turned into everything from cafes and restaurants to cycle pick up points and even hotels. Just two decades ago many of these buildings were left destitute and strewn across Spain’s countryside, yet today they have been transformed to their former glory and are among the country’s more charming and quirky spots. Here are four of the best examples:

They are usually full of locals, but I think there is a massive potential to attract even more tourists than they currently do. “I had never heard of the routes before I had moved here.” In Cadiz, along the Via Verde de la Sierra, some 40 jobs have been directly created along the route. It is a similar story along the 123 spanning from Girona to Costa Brava and across Andalucia. And that is just why the Vias Verdes scheme continues to thrive and continues to receive public support. In total more than €177 million has been invested into the scheme from central and local government. In total, some 5,000 kilometres of abandoned railway lines remain untapped and are being eyed up by the organisers of the scheme. So while the Vias Verdes organisers may be celebrating its silver anniversary the future of Spain’s greenways most certainly looks golden.

The language barriers are changing in surprising directions! Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.
IT is a curious sociological phenomenon. Quite often when in a foreign country, because one doesn’t speak their language, they mentally become free enough to say whatever they please in front of the local inhabitants. Two well tattooed blokes stroll into a bar, stop and gaze about easily announcing to each other what they would do to some of the beautiful Spanish girls sitting at the bar. The boys both smirk and punch each other on the shoulder; then meander over to the bar keeping their eyes steadily focused on their prey. The girls have seen it all before, giggle and look down at their coffees. They know already, word for word, what is coming next. The boys order two beers even though it is just 9am they still want the macho effect noticed. “Hey, habla Ingles?” they say in unison. “No” is the quick planned rebuttal
LINGUA FRANCA: The locals might understand more than you think! and then stare back into their coffees. Both guys look as if each has been clobbered with a hammer. What are they going to say next? All their known foreign words were used up ordering the beer.
Common sense would have dictated that they drink the beers and wander back out but being in a different country where the lingua franca wasn’t what they were used to listening to back home, they become bold.
Nevertheless knowing the girls couldn’t understand them gave them the quick courage to prattle suggesting rude and sexual innuendos to the girls. They were fervently impressing each other and preparing for the stories that
could be retold to their gang once home in the safety of a familiar pub. The lads ordered more beer and began their assault of the girls in earnest. Most certainly the girls would give in if they spoke quieter and repeated their sexual desires and longings. The girls didn’t budge an inch nor blink or sip their coffee. The boys grew tired and gradually wandered away. At the same moment slight wisps of smiles crossed the girls’ faces that grew into beaming full tooth expressions of joy. Then, Maria Jose turned to her dear friend Paquita and spoke in perfect English “what knuckle draggers. So dumb, I wonder who dresses them, you know, to keep the socks off their ears?” They both laughed uproariously. Then ordered two small brandies and laughed again. Meanwhile on the other side of the wall, out the door were two lads already concocting their stories of conquest and pure British cool. For the two worlds to finally meet, one of the sets is going to have to change. But that will take a long time. The girls are having too much fun now.

Sun, sea and a three pack of razors for me? TV COUCH CRITIC by Adam Whalley-Lewis I CAN’T do any TV reviewing this week until I mention Love Island (ITV2, all day, every day), so here goes. The contestants need to put some clothes and some sun cream on, I don’t care in what order. They need to remember that a beach-ready body is all well and good, but chances are none of them will have 28-inch waists in a few years’ time. And when did younger guys start shaving everything, no I mean everything?? I clearly missed that memo. I will try not to mention the show again. Promise. After what must have been a very long year wait for fans of the show, Poldark is back for a fourth season (BBC1, Sunday). There are 10 episodes in the latest run and I’m sure we are in for numerous treats from Ross and Co.
ISLE BE DAMNED: The omnipresent Love Island cast. Amongst others, you can look forward to Ross and Demelza reconnecting after her affair last time around. I’m not sure I want Ross to be that forgiving if I’m honest, I mean, who does her hair? And is anyone else fed up of Hugh’s poetry writing? Poor Hugh is bent double with the weight of his love for Demelza but doesn’t seem to understand that in his case, the bottle would clearly be mightier than the pen. If you watched last week, how did you cope with the vicar toe sucking
scene? OK, we had George’s reaction to not winning the election and for those inclined, Ross in the bathtub, but a man in Holy Orders sucking toes - give me a moment, not feeling too well... I’m back, but really, I will never look at the Vicar of Dibley in the same way again. This week Ross makes his maiden speech in Parliament, just don’t object to anything involving up-frocking will you Mr Poldark? Monday night saw England’s first match in the World Cup, with BBC1
TOE-TAL TURNOFF: Poldark. grabbing the football audience. I settled down to watch a much plugged special of Vera (ITV) only to realise after a few short minutes that this special was a repeat and as much as I love Brenda Blethyn calling anyone who will listen ‘pet,’ I knew the ending and turned over to watch Love Island. Actually I didn’t, but I could have done.
But because Brenda was repeating herself on ITV, I stumbled across The Family Farm (BBC2, Mondays and Thursdays) and thought it deserved a mention. The format is slightly predictable, three families who blame taking part in the show on their concern about the kids not getting enough exercise (I suspect the real reason has something to do with multiple upcoming mid-life crises) who swap clean and sterile lives to live in yurts and experience something of the harsh realities of life as farmers. The first show had injured lambs, backing away from actually handling the animals (me too, all that muck and filth) and one of the dads loving the whole thing so much, he was working out how many sheep he could fit in his garden (remember those pending midlife crises I mentioned earlier?). An upcoming episode takes a look at smaller-scale boutique pig farming. I have no idea what boutique pig farming is. The mind boggles, but we will find out more next week. Brace yourselves. IT’S an old Spanish formula to proclaim ‘My house is your house’ on inviting a stranger into your home. Nobody expects to be taken up on that but that’s what Pedro Sanchez said and did after Italy and Malta refused to allow the Aquarius rescue ship to land at any of their ports. The ship has 629 African migrants aboard that nobody wants. “It is our obligation to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and offer a safe port for these people,” Sanchez said, giving permission for the boat to dock in Valencia. Cynical observers outside Spain suggested that Sanchez made the offer so that he could earn brownie points with Brussels. Others said it was to keep in with Podemos. Or it could just be that the Spanish don’t have a big problem with immigrants. Many, now pensioners, had to emigrate themselves either for political reasons or to earn enough money to send back home in the pre-tourism, pre-boom days. Or it could just be that once in a while ‘My house is yours’ is meant to be taken literally.

QUIM TORRA is Cataluña’s regional president, although he was only brought in to act as a proxy for his self-exiled predecessor, Carles Puigdemont. Pedro Sanchez’s government made his hair stand on end, he complained once the names were announced, which is hardly surprising as the foreign minister is Josep Borrell, a Catalan who is firmly and vociferously opposed to independence. And Meritxell Batet, another Catalan who is Minister for Territorial Policies - in other words, Cataluña - is no separatist either. But Sanchez has already said that although there is no easy solution to the Cataluña problem, he’s willing to talk and at least reach consensus on social and economic issues unrelated to independence. There could even be an attempt to restore the clauses in the 2006 Catalan Estatut that were emascu-

lated by the Partido Popular in 2000. Torra and Sanchez have now spoken. Torra and Miquel Iceta, leader of the PSC - the PSOE’s Catalan version - have now met. Torra’s hair might not yet be back in place, but he’ll be spared the scalping he would have received from former president Mariano Rajoy.
Work experience PODEMOS supremo Pablo Iglesias criticised Pedro Sanchez for choosing ministers likely to appeal to the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos. Hardly a fair judgement but Iglesias was piqued because he was not invited to join the government. His nose is out of joint because between them Sanchez’s Cabinet have nous and experience culled from years in office in Europe as well as in Spain’s national, regional and local governments. Despite their individual qualities and impressive academic records, the same can’t be said of Podemos politicians, especially its higher echelons. The reason, the discovery of a Chinese Imperial vase discovered by chance in an attic in France and brought to auctioneers Sotheby’s in Paris was to come to auction. Well dear reader it has come to auction and it has sold. The initial estimate at auction for the vase was €430,000 and expectations were very positive, with the excitement among collectors such that ‘fireworks’ were expected in the auction room when Lot 1 came up for sale. WITH the wedding season in full swing, a survey by Brides Magazine has revealed that, despite these tough economic times, brides are still dead set on having the wedding of their dreams - with the average wedding costing £30,000+ and many brides expecting to exceed their initial budget. Hardly surprising, then, many newlyweds now start married life in debt. Or that some go to ever increasing lengths to recoup wedding costs by selling on eBay items bought from their gift list to generate cash. But the evidence suggests that bridesto-be are just as easily persuaded to splash out on hen parties too. One recent study estimates that over £1 billion will be spent on hen parties in the UK this year. One study last year indicated that

A grille covers the aperture and the wall was repainted with the paint colour of our terrace as opposed to the main building colour. Apparently our next-door neighbour complained at last year’s AGM. Now I am informed that, unless I make good the aperture to the façade, the Community will have me denounced. I am also told that I could have contested the complaint within three months of receiving notification of the minutes of the AGM. In addition, I have not been able to categorically establish that the law in Spain states that an opening cannot be made in the facade of an apartment building.

Why am I so grumpy? Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS sitting having a cup of coffee with a pal of mine and his missus when his phone pinged and he says to me, ‘Oh, there’s someone at my front door.’ What? How would you know that? He then proceeded to show me this app on his phone which films whoever rings the bell or even goes near it. Live! My initial reaction was that’s a handy little App but after a few more pings I realised it’s actually not what it appears to be. It’s sold as a security device so you can see who is hanging around your front door or ringing the doorbell. That’s fine when you are away or out. Or, you might install it in your old mum or dad’s place. But his pings again and he says so and so has just gone out and then it pings again and he tells me his neighbour next door has just gone out. Whoa, hold on, this is now becoming a CCTV device that is almost spying on members of your own household. It’s tracking what time they come in or out 24/7 and to be honest I’m not comfortable with that. I don’t want my neighbour tracking what time I’m coming in or going
out. I think that before you install one of these devices you should have the permission of all the people that it covers - although obviously not the burglars! But it’s like so many things these days - it starts off as a good idea then turns into just another intrusion into my life. Right, next! Actually I just thought of something - this is the 139th article I’ve written and people say to me how can you be grumpy about so many things? Well actually it’s quite easy because everyday somebody does something or says something that starts me off. Every time I get in the car, walk the dog, or go out to eat I get grumpy. Every time I turn on the news there is a topic that gets me going like Trump or Brexit. It’s not only me. Whenever I sit down with somebody that knows I write this column or when I’m on the Talk Radio Europe show, I get told of all the things that make them grumpy too. Or the emails I get - I think in the nearly three years that I’ve been doing this I’ve only had a couple of people disagree with me and, to be honest, one of them is a dickhead who argues for the sake of it. British courts may use ‘contempt’ to bypass jury HI Leapy What concerns me about Tommy Robinson having his collar felt by the boys in blue, is that this course of action, under the heading of ‘Due to contempt of Court’ is being conducted following instruction by judges. They have been advised by ‘Me Learned Friends’ and perhaps a high ranking officer from HM Police Force (maybe Special Branch), in a closed court, with no defence council, in this case, representing Robinson, and more worrying to your scribe, no jury present. A colleague, still serving in the West Midlands Force, tells me that this imprisonment ‘Procedure,’ acted through the ‘Contempt of Court’ ruling is taking place on a regular basis. HAVING recently returned from our annual holiday in Mallorca, I feel I must put pen to paper regarding the 100 per cent increase in the tourist tax. We had to pay more than €70, (that we hadn’t budgeted for as there was no mention of it), and it was left to the receptionists to tell guests what the government wanted, and to collect the money! We spoke to many holidaymakers who come back year after year as we do and they were unanimous in saying they won’t be coming back until the tax is reduced or even scrapped. This will lead to job losses and more hotel/apartments closures. We noticed several businesses closed whilst we were there. The Balearic government need to stop burying their heads in the sand,

TOURISTS: Help to fuel the Mallorca economy. the tax is not well received at all and to spend €120 million on trees and signposts is not doing anything for the tourists who are paying it! Why not start by repairing and maintaining the dreadful pavements on which there are many accidents, and take into account that when we come on holiday we spend an enormous amount of money without having to pay the extra taxes that we receive no benefit from at all? Totally agree I HAVE read Adam Whalley-Lewis’s column in last week’s Euro Weekly News. I totally agree with his comments about Channel 4’s ‘The Battle for Britain’s Heroes.’ I too have never heard of Afua Hirsch, but who does this woman think she is? The programme also made my blood boil, to slander British heroes the way she did is deplorable. I’ve little doubt that many also had a dark side, but the good that they did for Britain far outweighs any bad. I do not know her ethnic origins, but her comments may have been racist in reverse. She should be glad for people like Nelson and Churchill, it is because of people like them that she is able to live a life of freedom in Britain, in fact if it was not for people like them she may never have been born at all. Pet problems IS there any group or organisation trying to encourage more spaying or neutering so there are less animals being born? It would seem a great solution to a lot of the problems. Fair’s fair IT’S that time of year when fairs and fiestas start to be held around Spain and I must admit I think it’s great. No matter how tiny or large a town or city is, the local people get behind the concept of partying and having a good time supported by their councils. A lot of money is spent on costumes by the young (and not so young) ladies. It’s a time when bands and singers are brought in and there’s much music, eating and drinking. Happily, in our area - as a rule everyone conducts themselves well, they enjoy a drink but don’t get so smashed that they lose control. Alan, Benahavis

Research retracted A LANDMARK paper from 2013 that uncovered the benefits of a Mediterranean diet on the heart has just been retracted by a prestigious medical journal. The study carried out by the New England Journal of Medicine was found to contain errors. Apparently, the study did not remove flawed Spanish data which on later analysis showed the claim to be weaker than initially suggested. The original study claimed that eating a Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil or nuts slashed the risk of heart attack or stroke by 30 per cent. However, after being retracted the revised paper claims that there is simply a correlation between this particular diet and benefits for the heart. The study was retracted due to concerns that participants

who took part in the initial research weren’t of a similar height, weight and age. Without this correlation, the results of any trial could be compromised. Professor Naveed Sattar, from Glasgow University which initially carried out the research said: “This is a highly unusual step and I am sure that the NEJM took this decision very seriously.” In fact, after the reanalysis, little changed in terms of the overall results of the Spanish research of nearly 7,500 people. And even though the findings have been retracted, he stated that it was “reassuring” to see the results remained broadly similar. So it would seem that this research was flawed, but the benefits of the Mediterranean diet are still self-evident.

Bottoms up! RECENT research in Spain has revealed that women have more discerning palates and are better at telling the differences between wines. It also found that compared to men, women were more likely to describe themselves as feeling ‘joyful’ when drinking white wine. A total of 208 volunteers took part in a blind tasting of six different wines, two whites, one rose, and three reds. The volunteers were then asked about the quality of the wine and the feelings it evoked. The research was led by Dr Carolina Chaya from the Technical University of Madrid. Speaking of the research, she said: “Emotions like good, happy, joyful, mild and pleasant were positively associated with attributes such as fruity and floral, and more negative emotions like aggressive and guilty were associated with attributes related to red wine.” The report in the journal Food Quality and Preference also found that the young feel less guilty about drinking than older tipplers. And that older drinkers tend to drink to remember whilst younger drinkers to forget.

Advice for Brits abroad
JOYFUL: Research advises drinking white wine to avoid negative emotions.
THE British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised holidaymakers to check the rules on taking medicines abroad to avoid breaking the law. Apparently some commonly-prescribed medications in the UK are ‘controlled drugs’ in certain countries. These include medicines such as Diazepam, Tramadol and codeine. In Japan, for example, some cold remedies are banned while some sleeping pills need a licence in Singapore. And in Qatar, over-the-counter medicines such as cold and cough remedies must be accompanied by a prescription. If you fail to comply with the law you risk being arrested, fined or imprisoned in many countries, Greece and the UAE. With nearly half the UK population on prescribed medication this could mean that around 21 million people could be put in a difficult situation. The FCO recommends travellers check their website’s travel advice pages. If you’re unsure, they recommend contacting the embassy, high commission or consulate in the UK of the country you’re travelling to for further advice. They suggest that when travelling you always carry medicines in their correctly labelled container in your hand luggage. And if you are prescribed to take controlled substances or injection medications, always carry a note from the prescribing doctor. Finally, don’t forget to take out an appropriate level of travel health insurance which includes cover for any pre-existing illnesses.

Arab/Flamenco mix ALI KHATTAB was born and raised in Cairo (Egypt), where he became a musician and fell in love with the flamenco guitar sound, which led him to settle in Andalucia. After immersing himself in the Andalucian culture, he began to combine the rhythms and modes of Arabic music with those of flamenco. The conversation between these two styles has represented the basis of his success to date, including two highly praised albums: Al-Zarqa and Sin Pais. He refers to his Al-Zarqa album as a brunette with blue eyes and subsequently explained that this is his style of music, a mixture of two worlds in perfect harmony. His quintet will be part of the Alamar world music festival when they will appear at the esplanade of the Meson Gitano on Thursday July 5 at 10pm with free entry until all seats are taken.
CONCERTS: La Huella Versiones play on July 27 and August 10. THE council in Almeria City has excelled itself by organising a series of concerts as part of the Almeria summer festival. A great evening was had by the public and participating stores and there was a spectacular parade followed by music in the Parque del Recreo. One lucky participant won a weekend for two in a special draw organised by the council for those who took part.

SUMMER SCHOOL: Graduate dancers will mentor the students.
Summer school for young dancers FOR those with children or grandchildren in the area of Almanzora who want to learn more about dance and theatre, they have until the end of June to register their interest. The Cuevas del Almanzora school of music, dance and theatre, in cooperation with the local Department of Education, will be running a summer school from July 9 to 13 at the Desert Springs Resort in Almeria. According to the director of the school and camp coordinator, Belen Lopez Aledo, “The students have the opportunity to live a unique experience. For a week they will share their work as dancers with the daily experiences. In the mornings the facilities of the convent of San Francisco, where the municipal school
of music, dance and theatre is located, will be dedicated to training and teaching with two long-standing graduated dancers, Yolanda Urios and Daniel Meseguer.” The students will expand their knowledge in specialties such as classical, Spanish and modern dance. “The afternoons have been designed for fun and leisure within the resort. A private bus will transfer the students who will stay at an exclusive residential resort on a full board basis. It includes a pool in which they will perform different activities such as aquadance.” This is a unique camp open to all youngsters interested in the subject and any enquiries may be made by calling 617 440 008.

Mojacar holds its second romantic night TOMORROW night (Friday) will see the town of Mojacar join in with 350 other towns and villagers for the most beautiful kiss in the world. Towns from Belgium, France, Italy and Spain, all of which have been designated as beautiful villages will take part in what is believed to be the biggest simultaneous kiss in history in terms of number of people with more than 1,000,000 participants expected. The council has extended an open invitation to everyone in the town including tourists to come and enjoy this special evening. From 10pm Mojacar will be ready to welcome everyone to fall in love with the town and each other once more. It’s a night for the whole town to surrender to love and everyone will be greeted with

Chicken on the BBQ
by Andrew Harding HERE is the second of my barbecue recipes using chicken, the combination of ingredients sounds strange, but it is easy to prepare however not so easy to cook properly. Food poisoning from pork and chicken at a barbecue is relatively common. If I am eating barbecued food (including my own) I always cut chicken, pork and their products in half at the thickest point to ensure they are cooked through. Barbecued chicken Serves 4 750 grams of chicken breast, no skin, no bone Marinade 150 ml tomato ketchup 100 ml white horseradish sauce 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon black peppercorns finely ground
ALL FIRED UP: Barbecued chicken. Cube (2cm) or slice the chicken breasts (1cm thick). (I will be detailing two different ways of barbecuing) and place in a bowl. Make the marinade by mixing all the ingredients together and pour into the bowl containing the chicken and thoroughly mix until completely coated. Cover and place in the fridge for at least two hours, or overnight. Using a brush or kitchen roll, coat the grill in any cooking oil to prevent sticking.
Hint: Serve with salad and a dressing cold cooked pasta with a little drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil mixed with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Tip: If you use a charcoal BBQ stir the coals first to make sure there

The rationale behind this is so that all sides get cooked and the metal skewer conducts heat well, so will also cook from the inside out, as well as the BBQ cooking from outside in! The sliced chicken can be placed straight on the grill, both are rotated, the sliced chicken twice or more, the cubed chicken, four times or more.

Home group head’s law call THE president of an expatriate homeowner’s lobbying group has said she believes the Junta de Andalucia is not willing to resolve the issue of irregular homes in the near future. Maura Hillen, President of Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora NO (AUAN), said regional authorities took important steps to begin with but progress on resolving the status of irregular homes had since stalled. She added measures taken by the Junta had left many homes previously deemed illegal due to them being built on rustic land in legal limbo. “We warned them about this but they didn’t listen,” she said.

May-jor trouble A WORKS inspection report has accused Albox Town Council and Mayor Francisco Torrecillas of using fake self-employed workers for construction work in a case which implicates the current mayor. The inspection discovered two stone masons, one Spanish and the other Romanian, were working under a falsified selfemployed classification. They charge a fee of €10 per hour but only the Spaniard received that amount. The council sets the rate along with controlling the hours and organising the works. Torrecillas did not attend the work inspectorate’s summons last year but submitted a statement blaming Cristobal Montoro, the then Minister of Finance for the situation.

by Gregory Kirby ‘BACHILLERATO’ students from Albox’s Cardenal Cisneros school have completed the access tests to gain a place at the University of Almeria. They were among other pupils from schools in Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, Huercal Overa and Adra. The 3,110 candidates were very nervous but the majority of teachers accompanying students said the all-important access test was ‘manageable’ for those who have had a good year. Manuel Gamez, the director of access and relations with secondary education, lead the operation and said “The ‘first few hours’ which include the language test - were the most nerveracking. “Exam takers soon relax when they realise their studying has prepared them well,” he added.

ALBOX residents will soon be able to enjoy two brand new municipal tennis courts at the town’s water and health sports centre. Town mayor Francisco Torrecillas said the courts ‘meet all regulations’ and that the council built the courts using the highest quality materials. The new courts add to a list of other municipal sports facilities which will soon be open for use, including covered and open-air swimming pools, four padel courts and a gym. After the courts are finished, authorities will start to build a
park, an elderly person’s leisure space and a cycling track. The new developments in addition to the Las Ventas and Francisco Torrecillas pavilions and the Las Ventas football club, put Albox’s sports infrastructure among the best. And the facilities reportedly allow for a full and varied programme of sports clubs for residents of all ages and skills. Torrecilllas said sport is one of the main indicators to measure the health of a town. “Albox is certainly aiming to provide top class facilities to allow people to lead healthy lives throughout the year,” he added.

spent on the centre there and in Antas showed the Junta was committed to boosting the level of care. The Arboleas centre first opened its doors in December last year. It has 14 consultation spaces and covers more than 1,500 square metres.

ALBOX’S Popular Party (PP) has complained about mayor Francisco Torrecillas’ ‘dictatorial behaviour’ for refusing to comply with an agreement to relocate the weekly market to its original site. An absolute majority in a June 7 plenary reportedly voted to return the Tuesday markets to their original sites. Torrecillas moved the fruit and vegetable market and the textile market unilaterally in October 2017 ignoring a municipal decree, according to the PP. The conservative PP has demanded the mayor return the stalls to their initial locations on the Plaza Mayor, Calle del Muro, plaza Nueva and Ambassador Inocencio Arias, Andalusia and Rosario streets.

to early summer you can see many of them meeting on lavender, lantana and other flowers while dodging bees, wasps and other insects to find their meals of purest delight from the flowers. In autumn after the first rains and before the onset of winter cold they again emerge, often in greater number, to fill the garden with gentle activity and spectacular colours as they visit their favourite autumn flowers. It can be fascinating to try and identify the different species with such interesting names as admiral, southern speckled wood and brown argus. Not all that flutter are butterflies. Moths can also be present although they tend to emerge more at night. Other than by reputation, moths and butterflies are very similar. Moths

Another difference is moths’ forewings and hind wings are joined so they can fly better with the wings in unison while a butterflies are not, so they may seem a little more clumsy. Butterflies overall tend to be larger and more colourful than moths, but there are small butterflies and larger colourful moths. If you do not have many butterflies in your garden it may be that the environment does not
have enough of the right plants that they live on as caterpillars and feed from as butterflies. It can also be that insecticides have eliminated them if you are near agricultural areas. Butterflies are a sign a a healthy ecology as they represent a delicate addition to the garden that can be easily destroyed if insecticides are used or only a small variety of plants are present. The area I live in is rural but
not with much commercial agriculture on a big scale as farming conventionally becomes less attractive to young people and the interest in sustainable agriculture increases. This has allowed a return of many more butterflies in the garden. My lavender bushes were covered in butterflies and bees this morning. On a walk through the field to collect the ripened apricots, the whole field appeared to be active with butterflies busy on the native wild flowers I leave growing in the field until July when they are cut to reduce fire hazard. If you wish to encourage butterflies to your garden, most of the Mediterranean native flowers have a place to breed, shelter or feed butterflies. So if you have the space to allow wild flowers to grow it will assist in rejuvenating a healthy ecology. It is a part of the ecology that plants are eaten for the wildlife to survive. We cannot have perfect plants and have butterflies, and other insects. Yet without butterflies and other insects to pollenate we cannot have plants for very long either.

the dog to a vet quickly. Burns can be caused by a whole variety of things from scalding water and chemicals to electric wires. Run cool water in a steady stream over the affected part before taking the dog to a vet.
If your dog is choking, get your fingers around the object choking the dog. You may be able to pull it out, but there is a danger you will push it further down the throat. You can try putting both hands on its stomach just in front of the hind legs and lifting the dog’s back up into the air several times. Pumping the chest as for drowning may also help. Remember, not all dogs can swim. After rescuing your dog from drowning, try to empty
its lungs of water as soon as possible. Place the dog’s head lower than its body, open its mouth and begin to pump the chest by pressing down on the ribs and releasing the pressure immediately. Repeat at fivesecond intervals. Signs to look out for if your dog has been poisoned include collapse, muscular twitching, vomiting, bleeding or convulsion. If you see your dog pick up a poisonous object, don’t panic because the
dog could swallow it quickly to prevent you from taking it away. Calmly try to distract it with a tit-bit or

toy. If you’re too late but know the poison has been swallowed recently, try to make the dog sick with a mixture of salt and mustard in water. Take whatever the cause of poisoning was with you to the vet. Finally, dogs will shrug off most insect bites and stings more easily than a human. But there are dogs, like humans, who can have a severe allergic reaction. If there is severe swelling, vomiting, a high temperature or obvious pain, get to a vet. Snakes rarely attack unless cornered and most of them are harmless anyway if they are the same colour all over or have stripes running down the body. The dangerous ones are thin vipers and those with stripes around the body, diamond backs, or with a blotchy pattern, or with fangs for injecting poison. Get the dog to a vet quickly and, if possible, take the snake (better dead) with you.

The two-door grand tourer now becomes the manufacturer’s new flagship car, replacing the 6-series and with a firebreathing 650bhp V8 M8 model still to come next summer. Looking broadly similar to the concept that was last year revealed at the 2017 Villa d’Este concourse in Italy, the car forms part of a new ‘design language’ for the brand which aims to be cleaner and more contemporary. The headlights are narrow and can be fitted with lasers if certain options are ordered, and they sit aside a giant kidney grille which uses active aero aids and ‘an almost fully-sealed underbod’ which offers increased aerodynamic performance. It can be bought with one of two engines from launch, an 840d and a M850i, both of which come with the xDrive all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed ‘Steptronic’ automatic gear box as standard. The diesel features a 3.0litre straight-six turbo engine with

Inside, the car is fitted with the latest version of the iDrive infotainment and instrument display system with a large centre console, while cruise control, a heads-up display and active parking is all fitted as standard. The ‘live cockpit professional’ tech features a 12.3 inch instrument display and a 10.25 inch infotainment screen with Microsoft Office plus smart phone, Amazon Alexa and Google assistant connectivity. There are rear seats fitted and the boot is a sizeable 420 litres, with prices set to start at around €87,000 for the 840d and upwards of €110,000 for the M850i.

Hatch made in heaven AUDI is set to take on Mini with its new A1 Sportback. The supermini is packed with technology, safety kit and new premium features, and is set to go on sale in November. The outgoing first-generation model is the German b r a n d ’s t h i r d b e s t - s e l l i n g model in the UK, and has only once notched annual sales of less than 90,000 across Europe every year since it was launched in 2010. But Mini last year shifted 215,549 units, meaning Audi has yet to reach its potential in the sector. The new A1 looks sportier than the old model, with a single frame front grille and three flat bonnet slits reminiscent of the original 1984 Sport Quattro. It is available only with five doors and has been made longer to increase cabin space and boot volume, with the latter adding 65 litres.
There will be no diesel option, rather a range of turbocharged TFSI petrol engines, including a 95bhp 1.0-litre three cylinder, plus 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre fourcylinder options delivering up to 197 bhp. The standard gear box is a six-speed manual with a seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission available, while the fastest model, the 40 TFSI, comes with a six-speed S tronic box. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who has not always done well on grass, said: “I believe I can win the trophy again. “The tricky part [of playing on grass] is adapting the body and movement. “Other surfaces are more comfortable for the body, you have to run in a certain
way. “The ball bounces less, the balls are heavier, the court is faster... But I think my movement and physical capacity and strength, all have improved a lot.” Muguruza won the 2016 French Open but this year lost to eventual winner Simona Halep, 26, in the semifinal at Roland Garros. She bagged the Wimbledon 2017 trophy with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over the American Venus Williams. And the current World Number Three said that she continues to improve on grass, adding: “It’s very different. There are no grass courts in Spain. It took two or three years to be more positive. Now I enjoy it.”

Now Fer the crown FERNANDO ALONSO won the Le Mans 24 Hours at the first attempt. The Formula 1 driver and team-mates Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima also drove Toyota its first ever victory in the famous race. And the 36-year-old Spaniard now wants to win the Indianapolis 500 as he aims to complete motorsport’s ‘triple crown,’ since he has already finished top of the podium at Monaco Grand Prix twice. Only English legend Graham Hill has ever won all three classic races.
Former F1 driver Nakajima put the Toyota hybrid machine on pole position and the first half of the gruelling race saw the lead swing between Alonso’s team and the number seven car piloted by Briton Mike Conway, Japanese Kamui Kobayashi and Argentine Jose Maria Lopez. Buemi, also an ex-F1 star, was then hit with a 60-second stop-and-go penalty for speeding in a caution zone, leaving the number eight outfit two-thirds of a lap and more than two minutes behind.
But Alonso pulled the time back during a series of night-time stints behind the wheel, and Nakajima retook the lead in the 16th hour before the team held on for victory and a Toyota one-two. British driver Jenson Button, the 2009 F1 world champion, failed to complete the race after his Russian SMP team’s car spent two hours in the pits before retiring. The Japanese manufacturer was the only team entering a hybrid car in the top LMP1 class.
