Cave fire outrage Families call for sentence review by Joe Gerrard THE mothers of three people who died after an arson attack on a cave house in Almeria have called on Spain’s Constitutional Court to review the sentences of those convicted. Naima El Arbaoui, the mother of 12-year-old Naima who died in the fire, said she and the mothers of Alejandro, 21 and Cinthia, 15 were “dissatisfied” with the original sentences. “We have resorted to the Constitutional Court and we are waiting for an answer to see what happenes,” she said. El Arbaoui was speaking at a rally held outside the cave in the La Molineta area where the man and two teenage girls died on April 3, 2017. Natalia de Haro, Alejandro’s mother, said the sentences handed down in the original trial were not appropriate for a “triple murder.” Raquel Fernandez, the mother of Cinthia, said her and the two other women had put together a petition calling for changes to laws concerning children in criminal cases.
COURT DEMAND: The woman said they had called on Spain’s Constitutional Court to review the sentences. “We have more than 10,000 signatures. People are collaborating with us because there is no responsibility for anything here,” she added. De Haro said they had not yet received a response from authorities but they would continue their campaign to get the law changed. “Another misfortune could occur. If one has come, more can come,” she said.
El Arbaoui said children were still coming onto the site where her daughter, the man and the girl died. “Everything is full of garbage. It has not been cleaned, it is not fenced. You can see there are more chairs and nobody takes charge here,” she said. The rally at the La Molineta cave is the second organised by the women. The first
took place at the Almeria City Court at the beginning of last month.

Cable criminal NATIONAL POLICE have employed a European arrest warrant to arrest a fugitive in Almeria City. The Romanian suspect, held in the Torrecardenas neighbourhood, was handed over to the authorities of his native country and is facing four years in prison for the crime of aggravated robbery. According to the Local Police, a probe was launched two weeks ago after the International Fugitive Tracing Group issued a report. The report suggested that a man who had allegedly been on the run from Romanian police for six years, was living in Torrecardenas. The crimes for which the 40-year-old detainee was being pursued date back to the period between October 2009 and July 2010. During this time the suspect, either acting alone or with accomplices, stole a significant volume of copper.

FRIENDS of Kirsty Maxwell, the Scottish woman who plummeted from a balcony while holidaying on the Costa Blanca, have spoken of their horror at finding her body lying by their hotel swimming pool. Last weekend marked one year since the 27-year-old newlywed from Livingston tragically fell from the 10th floor of the Apartmentos Payma complex in Benidorm. The bank worker had been visiting Spain for pal Carolynn Burke’s hen-do with 19 other friends, and four of them plus her aunt returned to the resort as their search for answers continues. Carolynn, 29, said: “My mum was banging on my door at 10.30am and then she burst into the room with a man shouting ‘someone’s missing, someone’s missing - there’s been an accident. “Lesley-Anne got up and ran to the window and looked. When she came back she said, ‘it’s Kirsty.’ “We just sat in a room for

TOP HORSEPLAY: The Feria de Jerez is a traditional marvel. IT’S among the most quintessentially Spanish festivals still celebrated today. And the annual Feria de Jerez, also known as the Feria del Caballo (horse fair), is just around the corner. Taking place in world sherry capital Jerez de la Frontera, the week-long celebration is the most important in the province of Cadiz, Andalucia, and has been designated a celebration of international interest by the Spanish government. Less of a tourist-trap than regional capital Sevilla’s enormous Feria de Abril, it features the time-honoured casetas - temporary bars and restaurants which transform into lively nightspots packed with revellers after dark - plus a raucous family fairground with a range of attractions, both typical features of ferias in southern Spain. Unlike in Sevilla the casetas are open to the public, allowing visitors to quaff local sherry and sample the area’s superlative cuisine while guitarists march to a flamenco beat marked by the pounding rhythm of stamping
feet and clapping hands. But a large portion of the leafy Gonzalez Hontoria Park, where festivities are centred, is also given over to the finest pure bred horses of Jerez in a nod to the origins of the event as a commercial livestock fair originating more than 500 years ago. The Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art is located in the city, and the area’s horsebreeding heritage comes to the fore during the feria, with dressage, rising competitions and polo matches. But the undoubted highlight is the daily parade of horse-drawn carriages, dubbed enganches in Spanish. Lavishly decorated English, Hungarian, Russian and Spanish-style carriages are paraded around the park and city streets, ending in the carousel, when they wheel and turn together in choreographed circles. It is a striking, unforgettable spectacle soundtracked by the cracking of whips and hundreds of jingling bells.

Expat ‘paedo’ snared A 63-YEAR-OLD British man has been held on the Costa del Sol for allegedly distributing child pornography. The unnamed suspect was arrested at Malaga Airport a s h e s t e p p e d o ff a f l i g h t from the Canary Islands. It comes in the wake of a Spanish National Police probe, during which indecent images and videos being shared online led to an Internet Protocol address registered in the expatriate hotspot of Mijas Costa. A raid on the man’s home saw investigators seize a laptop and an external hard drive on which they found evidence that files of a ‘clear paedophilic nature’ had been saved before being deleted, according to police.

THE Partido Popular accused the regional government of using the inauguration of a new school to cover up its wider educational failings. Education minister, Sonia Gaya inaugurated the school but PP’s Almeria minister, Aranzazu Martin said it was a cover up for the government’s ‘huge shortcomings’ in Almeria’s education. The expanded school had already been open for a year and ‘still has deficiencies,’ she said. The expansion projects at the ‘El Toyo’ sec-
ondary school in Retamar-el Toyo cost €3.8 million of which €3.6 million went towards building w orks a nd the re ma inde r cover ed equipment. The new buildings have replaced 14 prefabricated classrooms and can serve up to 480 students. But Martin said Almeria is still Andalucia’s leader in prefabricated classrooms and insisted Gaya visit the

Torremar Primary school to see the situation for herself. Classroom shortages mean children are entered into raffles to decide who is taught in the prefab huts, she said. In addition, a major shortage of school places has forced parents to educate their children further afield, she added. The ‘El Toya construction is part of a larger 2016-2017 education infrastructure plan worth €107 million and includes 128 building works.

It comes after the lifeless body of 17-year-old Kieran O’Brien was found after a six-day search. The hunt had been extended to cover all of Malaga Province, with relatives in the UK contacted after he vanished from his family home in Alhaurin el Grande. Investigators believe that he may have committed suicide, according to reports. A Guardia Civil police helicopter was last Thursday seen combing the area inland from the coast. He was eventually located around 9pm close to the Casa del Guardamontes, a well-known hiking spot in the mountain foothills behind the town. Psychologists are reportedly talking to his class-

Danielle Hall suffered fatal injuries after falling from the apartment in the Costa Blanca resort where she was staying with her partner and his grandmother. After a night out with boyfriend, Jordan Bevan, the supermarket worker from Hexham, Northumberland, toppled over the balcony railings and suffered fatal injuries. A North Shields inquest heard Jordan say that he thought she had stepped outside for a cigarette when he

Fatal plunge mystery Coroner’s ‘open verdict’ on Brit death heard a thud and saw her lying on a garage roof below. He said that Danielle had not shown any signs of depression or suicidal tendencies on the night she died in November 2016. Coroner Eric Armstrong said there was no evidence to suggest she had taken her own life and he recorded an open verdict. Mr Armstrong said, “We don’t have any accounts or information telling us how she fell from the balcony. “It’s most likely to be that she had a drink, she was a bit unsteady, went for a cigarette and lost her balance and fell. “If this is right, there’s no supportive evidence for it. I cannot say it was an accident. “What is left is an open conclusion.” The coroner said, “No parent should have to deal with the death of a child.

Environmentalists: Reservoir ‘a failure’ A RESERVOIR in Almeria has made an environmental group’s list of 15 Spanish manmade water sites threatening the ecology of the surrounding area. The Beninar reservoir, in
the west of the province, was among others the Ecologists in Action claimed were ‘useless.’ The group recommended its demolition. The Great Hydraulic Failures report said most of the
sites included in the report were as a result of bad planning. Some were only capable of holding between 15 and 50 per cent of the water they were designed to, it added.

Sex assault verdict outcry by Joe Gerrard A NAVARRA court’s acquittal of five men accused of raping an 18-year-old woman during Pamplona’s San Fermin festival has led to calls to reform Spain’s sexual assault laws. The court’s verdict, which found the men guilty of sexually assaulting the victim, sparked protests in cities throughout Spain. Hundreds of people took to the streets in Almeria and other towns and cities in the province and across the country after feminist groups mobilised supporters on social media. The protests come as Rafael Catala, Spain’s Justice Minister, said the government in Madrid would present proposals to reform the country’s Penal Code
“within weeks” following the verdict. Protestors rallied around the slogan: “I do believe you”. They chanted: “It’s not abuse, it’s rape!” and carried signs which read: “Enough of the patriarchal justice system” and “Spain is not a country for women”. Demonstrators were joined by local politicians in protests which took place across Spain. Those gathering in Madrid waved signs and chanted slogans outside the Justice Ministry building, according to reports. Rallies were also organised beyond Spain including in the British cities of London and Manchester, as well as in Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon and Paris.

Politicians pledge change as protests erupt across Spain
PROTESTS: Demonstrators gathered in Almeria and across Spain in opposition to the ruling. Rafael Catala said in the wake of the outcry changes being drawn up by the government in Madrid would ensure the law was “always” on the side of the victim. “Society has changed a lot in
the 23 years since current sexual assault laws were introduced. The commitment to respect people and our intransigence against violence, especially concerning gender, is among those changes,” he said.
The members of the selfstyled ‘La Manada’ (wolf pack) group were handed nine year prison sentences each. They have also been ordered to pay €50,000 in compensation and are prevented from contacting
the victim for 15 years. The court head they had led the woman back to the basement of a block of flats where they assaulted her and filmed it on their mobile phones. The victim’s family said the court’s penalty, for sexual assault rather than rape because no force was found to have been used, was “insufficient”. The men were given the right to appeal against the ruling. Both the prosecution and the defence have said they would lodge appeals with the court. A national petition on the Change.org site calling for the disqualification of the magistrates who handed down the verdict has been signed by more than 1,316,750 people.

By Joe Gerrard MEDIA regulators in Andalucia have referred their concerns about the coverage of the Gabriel Cruz case to national authorities on grounds of ‘extreme sensationalism’ from some television stations. The Audiovisual Council of Andalucia (CAA) also found the rights of some people involved in the investigation into the eight-year-old’s death could have been violated. Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC), which regulates television broadcasts in the country, is now set to rule on whether the claims have any basis. The CAA reportedly analysed almost 69 hours of news coverage as part of their investigation which was launched in March. ren Litten told his Twitter followers, “crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm! “I created the series over 11 years ago, wrote it, guest starred in it and ended up directing it. It’s difficult to think what else there is to do! Thank you for watching!” It comes only weeks after Litten tweeted, “Apparently The Sun are running a story tomorrow on how Benidorm has been cancelled. Don’t make me f**king laugh! Drug claim spark by Matt Ford A BRITISH holidaymaker killed after a violent Canary Islands brawl was given a drugs overdose by medics, pathologists say. Father-of-two Daryl Bhandal was allegedly attacked and beaten while celebrating his birthday at a four-star hotel in Santiago, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The construction firm director suffered head and facial injuries, and became agitated as medics tried to take X-rays at the island’s Hospital del Sur, leading them to inject him with 20mg of anaesthesia and sedation drug Midazolam. But pathologists’ reports say that rather than calming him down, the dosage knocked him unconscious, leading staff to administer a specialised stimulant - Flumazenil - to reverse the effect around 10 minutes later.

Whilst his initial injuries were caused by him being assaulted, those injuries should not have killed him. “His treating doctors had a duty of care to provide the best medical intervention possible but according to pathology reports in Spain, and expert evidence we have obtained, it appears that was simply not the case.”
Strike threat FIVE unions representing Ryanair cabin crew across Europe have given the low-cost airline a deadline to adopt national employment laws for all their workers or face industrial action during the summer. Unions from Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Italy were present at a meeting in Lisbon and their demands include Ryanair respecting national legislation where cabin crew are based and applying the same work conditions for all workers. In a joint statement the unions said, “If Ryanair fails to comply with these terms, the undersigned unions will initiate all the statutory and legal procedures to call a coordinated industrial action, including the use of strike action, during summer 2018.” The unions have given the Irish carrier a June 30 deadline to comply.

Speaking to local newspaper La Voz de Galicia, the 45-year-old - named only as Andres - said an individual resembling the suspected kidnapper entered a hotel bedroom while his daughters, aged five and 13, slept during a 2001 holiday. And when the e-fit images were released internationally 12 years later, he immediately recognised the man pictured. “I don’t know if that man kidnapped Madeleine, but for me he is the man who tried to take my daughters,” he said. He had not, but decided to stay in the girls’ room to reassure them, and he says the man returned a few minutes later, replying that “he had come to check on the children” when confronted. “Even today, I don’t know how he managed to escape, he was slippery like an eel,” he added. And when he complained to reception he was told that the man was “a regular guest who likes children but doesn’t hurt them.” He also claims he was quizzed by investigators from Spain’s National Police and the UK’s Scotland Yard, but that they never came back to him.

Although different to the cruise ferry experience associated with Brittany Ferries in Ireland, the ship will offer comfortable en-suite cabins, lounges, self-service dining, shopping and a café/bar. A ship, the MV Connemara, has been chartered for the new service, and she will follow the successful ‘économie’ model that Brittany Ferries has established on services from the UK to France and Spain. Brittany Ferries said in a

statement: “If you’re looking for value and a simpler service direct to Spain, and are content to travel without the premium experience offered by our cruise ferries, the Connemara économie service between Cork and Santander could be just right for you.” Crossings will take approximately 26 hours, with departures from Cork on Wednesdays and Fridays. The 120 cabins on the ship will feature beds for up to four passengers, and some will be pet-friendly. The Connemara will carry around 500 passengers with space for 195 cars, and the company expects a 50/50 split between passengers and freight carried.

Air scare Pilot sparks passenger exit THE captain of a plane bound for Spain gave passengers the chance to leave the flight after an aborted take-off and three hours of technical problems. The plane returned to its stand after aborting the initial take-off run while engineers checked the aircraft over. The flight crew declared there were some ‘slight electrical problems’ and then an hour later they discovered there was a new computer failure. Once that was fixed the pilot announced over the public address system that the plane was ‘apparently normal’ but said anyone who wanted to disembark would be allowed to It is claimed that around 20 people decided to leave the aircraft, which delayed the flight further as their luggage was off-loaded before the aircraft’s departure from the Canary Islands.
PLANE SAILING: The Vueling flight eventually landed at Vitoria airport after hours of delays. The incident happened on a Vueling flight from Gran Canaria to Bilbao in northern Spain and the pilot reportedly said: “We cannot force anyone to stay on board if they don’t feel safe.” The flight was originally scheduled for a 6.45pm departure, although it didn’t finally
take off for another three hours. And once it did it was then diverted from its destination airport due to the Bilbao runway being closed for repairs. The flight finally landed safely in the early hours of the morning in Vitoria and passengers were transferred by bus to Bilbao.

THE Ashlea Memorial event was recently held to raise funds for MACS regional cancer charity. Once again, the event was held in the home of Ms Maggi Lake of Bédar. This memorial event is named after and honours a brave woman who lost her long struggle to cancer. Those present at the event were treated to a musical feast of an array of outstanding talent including Clive Bowley (Flashback), Tony Justice and Dennis Danzelman (Rough Justice), Lady Ellen, Patti Ross, and Lost Track. All the entertainers volunteered their time for free and had the crowd up and dancing for four hours. As always, the success of this event depended upon a host of volunteers including a fabulous kitchen crew and wonderful food preparers who donated their specialities. There were tasty mains and desserts to please every palate. To date the event has raised €1,271.

DAZZLING DAMES: The Dames and their companions in Valencia.
Short break away THE Dames in Turre have recently returned from another fantastic short break away with their partners and friends to the port city of Valencia. During the four-day stay the Dames and their companions enjoyed a panoramic tour of the city with an Englishspeaking tour guide. They visited the Old Town’s central market, La Lonja, as well as the Cathedral and other nearby places of interest. On another day, they visited
the Port and Marina of Valencia Beach and took a walking tour of the Cabañal area. This old fisherman’s village has streets which are lined with quaint tiled houses. Finally they visited the Old Shipyards in the Grao area, with its outstanding architectural heritage. The Dames took every opportunity to enjoy their time and stopped off on the way home at the Port and Marina area in Calpe where they enjoyed an excellent lunch.
The Dames would like to thank Lesley Barlow who organised this trip and Marco their driver who brought them home safely. Euro EUR/GBP: Unmoved at £0.87 EUR/USD: Up from $1.23 to $1.21 The European Central Bank (ECB) was once again a key driver in euro movement over the last few weeks as markets sought to learn more about the bank’s plans to wind down its stimulus programme. This saw the euro move lower against most of its peers as the ECB voted to leave monetary policy unaltered again in April. Some disappointing inflation figures also weighed on the single currency this month, as they signalled the ECB’s current path is unlikely to change for some time to come. The focus for EUR investors over the coming month is likely to be an expected dip in the Eurozone’s first quarter GDP and whether the latest economic data points to a further moderation in growth during the second quarter.
EURO MOVEMENT: The European Central Bank was once again a key driver. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.13 to €1.14 GBP/USD: Down from $1.41 to $1.39 The pound skyrocketed at the start of April as it was buoyed by expectations that the Bank of England (BoE) was gearing up to raise interest rates in May. However, Sterling was brought crashing back
down to earth in the second half of the month as it appeared this speculation may have been a little overblown. Investors fled the pound in droves as some weaker-than-expected inflation figures and BoE Governor Mark Carney’s comments that he was ‘conscious of other meetings later in the year’ caused many analysts to revise their
US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.70 to £0.71 USD/EUR: Down from €0.80 to €0.82 The US dollar was seen in a negative light at the start of this month, with many investors shunning USD as Donald Trump traded barbs with Moscow over an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria. The US dollar didn’t stay down for long however, with the US currency enjoying a major resurgence towards the end of April as rising inflation helped to bolster expectations of a more aggressive path of monetary tightening from the Federal Reserve. This, in turn, helped US treasury yields break past 3 per cent and prompted investors to flock back to USD. There is potential for the US dollar to continue to push higher in May should the Fed chose to strike a more bullish tone in its upcoming policy meeting.

Adventures with ‘Rick the Roo Boy’ LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT
GREAT excitement is now building in the Leaps residence. In less than three weeks time the ol’ boy’s musical is finally being workshopped in Australia. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend personally, but my extremely talented co-writer is there and will oversee the whole thing, including a video, so I shall certainly be party to the next best thing. The presentation is semi-biographical and, along with my books, will we hope, finally put a cork in the mouths of those nasty individuals who think they have somehow gained a major scoop by gleefully ‘revealing’ that I once received a custodial sentence in the courts. Something that has been well and truly in the public domain for the last 45 years! Somewhat ironical that my debut offering should be in a country founded by convicts! I actually have some great memories from this glorious ‘down under’ country. My two record releases, which reached number one and number five respectively, allowed me to enjoy two separate tours of this magnificent land. One of my funniest experiences occurred on
NO WORRIES! Great memories down under. one of these memorable visits. I had been in the country for only a short time, when I was invited on a local radio show. During the programme I stated, somewhat humorously, that I had been in the country over a week and hadn't yet seen one kangaroo! The next minute the phone rang in the studio. A broad, heavily-accented Australian voice, then proceeded to inform us that he was, ‘Rick the
Roo Boy’ and could show me ‘all the kangaroos I wanted’. Midst much banter and laughter; a vague (as I thought) arrangement was made for us to meet at some time in the future. Cut now to the hotel we were appearing in. The band and I had been given a suite and four separate bedrooms in the same hotel! At this point, I think the high jinks that subsequently ensued can be confidently left to
everyone’s imagination! A couple of weeks later, after a particularly marathon session, we had all collapsed at somewhere around 6am. As my extremely ‘weary’ head hit the pillow there came a loud banging on the door. Groaningly I hauled myself up and staggered to the ‘spyhole.’ I simply couldn’t believe my eyes. Standing in the corridor was the manifestation of every ethnic cartoon character of an Aussie you could possibly imagine. A sinewy deeply suntanned figure, clad from head to foot in leather and tassels and topped by (and I kid you not) your classic Stetson surround by actual dangling corks! Gleefully enthusiastic he was holding up some sort of bewhiskered rat to the spyhole. “Hi there,” he shouted, no doubt seeing my shadow. “I’m Rick the Roo Boy, are you ready?” Oh my God! I simply couldn’t believe it. Was I ready? Frankly I have never been less ready for anything in my life. With a mouth as arid as an Arabian desert and a tongue of recently cured leather I somehow managed to croak out a mumbled request for him to ‘hold on’. And that’s where I’m afraid I have to leave it. Who predicted predictive text? The future ain’t what it used to be, says Terence Kennedy TECH FOR THE TIMID AN IBM chairman uttered the IT industry’s most hopeless prediction ever in the 1940’s: ‘I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.’ Oops. Movie mogul Darryl Zanuck thought television was a passing fad. An InfoWorld columnist believed the internet would fizzle out by 1996, a Microsoft executive said Apple was as good as dead in 1997, and Bill Gates insisted we would solve spam by 2006. Prediction is notoriously difficult, especially if it’s about the future. I can’t even predict what socks I’m going to wear. We may not be jet-packing to work (yet), nor commuting to other planets as so many 20th century pundits thought we would by now. But an old tech article re-
POCKET PITA: Predicting the smartphone. cently went viral given the uncanny prescience of its predictions. American science fiction writer David Gerrold actually foresaw smartphones, exactly how they would work, and even how annoying we’d eventually find them.
In a 1999 interview he forecast that his phone would be merged with ‘a pocket organiser, a beeper, a calculator, a digital camera, a pocket tape recorder, a music player and a colour television, all fitting in a box smaller than a deck of cards.’ He went on to predict how it would connect wirelessly and function as a desktop system connecting to full-sized screens, with speech recognition, email, finding restaurants and booking hotels. Like Douglas Adams’ fictional Babelfish, Gerrold’s future wonder could actually translate the world’s languages. With one pioneering exception today’s smartphone doesn’t connect to a keyboard and monitor and hey-presto it’s a desktop computer as he predicted, but give it a few years. Remember that Gerrold’s visionary view was delivered a full eight years before the iPhone launched the smartphone era en-
gulfing us today. And yes, he saw its downsides too. ‘I would call this device a Personal Information Telecommunications Agent, or Pita for short,’ he said. ‘The acronym can also stand for Pain In The Ass, which it’s equally likely to be, because having all that connectivity is going to destroy what’s left of everyone’s privacy.’ No, really? While Gerrold could reveal the future without either a crystalball nor his palm being crossed with silver, it’s astonishing just how many people at the very top of the industry show less prescience than a haddock. Pride of place in the Prediction Hall of Shame absolutely has to go to Digital Equipment Corporation’s chairman Ken Olsen. His spectacularly foolish 1977 prediction: ‘There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.’ Yeah, right.

Testing Tesla WHEN it comes to predictions, Serbian visionary Nikola Tesla takes the trophy. Amazingly, he said this nearly a century ago (1926): ‘When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. ‘Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. ‘A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket.’

LEARNING to speak Spanish in those days was a must, or you didn’t eat. So, you would make your list of errands to do and what needed to be said (and then the very hard part not included in any books) what they might reply to you. If that wasn’t difficult enough, you also had to prepare yourself for the differing accents that would flow back at you. Words are pronounced differently by a person who cannot read than one who can. Believe me, there were people in high power that couldn’t read and peasant folk who could read but had a total grasp of the situation you were enquiring about. I must have filled 20 note books about typical situations and how they would be spoken. So many note books

If at the market I was ordered to buy tomatoes I would begin bargaining and come home with garlic, apples and pears (without stairs in sight). Furthermore, those novel interjections so often and aptly suggested by the Spanish go amiss if your brain is locked in a presupposed stratified reply.
Yes, it might seem like banging your head against a foreign wall, but it was the best way to learn quickly. In theory learning the new language is like climbing stairs… a little each day then maybe a week or two at a plateau then more improvement, although almost imperceptible. As far as I am concerned the impossible-to-bump-off Phelan is only one reason to venture over the cobbles. Recent storylines have been grippingly hard hitting, with David’s rape and Bethany being groomed to name just two. The show has a new star in Kayla Westbrook (played by Mollie Winnard) who has started work as a waiter at Speed Daal and who delivers ‘the shock of the Soaps’ when Zeedan tells Kayla that he thinks his all too distant wife might still have feelings for him. #weallsawthatcoming. Kayla is apparently going to cause trouble for Craig and Bethany. I can’t wait. Channel 5 checked us in to British Airways on Tuesday evening with a look back at the last 100 years of passenger flying. Don’t write in, but I think the forerunners of BA first took

Last week Orlando Bloom was granted an audience with Graham to shamelessly plug his West End play, comedian Stephen Merchant blatantly plugged his voice over of the new Sherlock Gnomes animation and SuRie plugged (sang) the UK entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Publicising yourself on prime-time TV, nice work if you can get it. This week Graham plays host (by which I mean provides a self-serving publicity platform) to funny man Stephen Man-
gan, who is plugging his new black comedy Hang Ups and Hollywood star Amy Schumer who talks endlessly about her new movie. At least there is only a small risk of anything Eurovision this week. Tricks of the Restaurant Trade returned to Channel 4 on Monday. I’m new to this show so pictured dirty kitchens, small portions and low quality ingredients. You can imagine my delight when Simon Rimmer met the squeaky clean researchers from a well-known coffee chain and Adam Pearson waded around non-descript High Streets with lovely, clean, bottled water. Although I’m pleased there were no dirty kitchens, I’m not sure I’m hooked. I guess my question about the show is - why? We all know chain coffee shops are a corporate machine and bottled water is just, well, ‘agua en una botella’ and probably doesn’t merit a key slot in the schedule, even on a Monday, on Channel 4. In shock Britain’s Got Talent news, David Walliams has a different chair to the other judges because of a back injury, thank goodness for the clarification ITV. Happy Viewing.

THE EU’s made it patently clear that it’s not interested in a mutually beneficial relationship with the UK. Repeated reassurances by British ministers that they intend to be the EU’s closest friend have been rebuffed. Brexit negotiations had seemed to be progressing well enough. Officials had apparently finally come to terms regarding outstanding liabilities, the status of each other’s citizens

and the rolling over of a number of technical accords. But the outright rejection by unelected EU bureaucrats of Britain’s proposals for the Northern Irish border is nauseating. In fact, their suggestion the only way to achieve a frictionless border is for Britain to remain in the customs union - even though Theresa May has made it absolutely clear this isn’t an option - leads many to conclude the EU is weaponising the Irish border solely in order to scupper any Brexit agreement. So ingrained is the EU in its ‘project’ it’s simply unable to consider sensible, rational suggestions to settle the issue. Moreover, it simply isn’t acceptable for the EU to reject Britain’s proposals without offering viable alternatives. As the military strategist
Sun Tzu pointed out centuries ago, the best way to win a battle is for the enemy to decide not to fight because he believes that you are too strong and the best way to lose is to appear weak. Why does Theresa May seem hell-bent on proving Sun Tzu’s views correct? At every turn in these Brexit negotiations she’s appeared weak and undecided, inviting all and sundry in the EU to take pot-shots at the UK. We don’t respond in strength and lose every negotiating battle, fighting from the back foot. We have many strengths but won’t use them. To the EU, we must look like a beaten spouse - no matter how hard they punch and kick and threaten, dinner will still be on the table when they get back from the pub. If you are tax resident for three years and over 65 years of age, you can be free of capital gains when you sell your principal residence in Spain.

I won’t be giving up Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHAT’S the point of round sliced bread? Anyone? I bet not one of you can explain the actual point of it. Let me explain where I’m coming from. Mercadona, one of the best Spanish supermarkets, sells a lot of different breads in all shapes and sizes. The one I particularly like is the one I call ‘Five Seedy Bread.’ It’s really tasty and I’m sure many of you have seen it or even buy it. The only problem is it’s round so what happens is you get four to six decent size slices out of the fat bit in the middle, for your sandwiches, and then you get smaller sandwiches. After maybe one more half decent round you then finish up with six or eight bits of, what’s known in the bakery trade, as the ‘endy’ bits and you get more ‘endy’ bits than big bits. So I’m going to suggest to Mercadona that they make it a traditional bread shape so that I, we, get a consistent size sandwich. Where it gets even worse is a restaurant that I like to go occasionally for breakfast serves it and sometimes they give me my
two slices and they are the ‘endy’ bits! Those are not big enough to go the distance with my full English. See my dilemma? How long should good quality things last? I purchased a very expensive Samsonite ‘man’ bag for use on flights. It was not for everyday use - just occasional - and even then I don’t use it on every trip. It’s made out of leather and fabric. I’ve had it a couple of years and now the leather is flaking off. So, is it reasonable of me to think that’s not right? Should something that costs over a €100 and is only used occasionally start to just fall to pieces? This has happened to quite a few things recently - not all of them as expensive. The amount of phone cases I have had for the same phone is crazy. They usually cost €10 or €15 but they just fall to pieces. We unfortunately live in a disposable age. A pair of wireless headphones stopped charging and the store I bought them from were not interested. They just told me to send them back to the manufacturer which is no easy job either. In both instances I emailed the manufacturer. I have had no reply from the headphone people and I have to send the bag back to a place in Madrid. As usual I won’t be giving up.

I HAVE just read the article about respectable motorhome owners by Dave Turrre. We unfortunately support David and Sally’s complaint about ‘free campers.’ I said unfortunate because we used to have a motorhome but are sadly also becoming less tolerant with the amount of motorhomes lining the street. Noticeably taking up available space in car parks. They line the beaches and stand on already eroding seashore land. How do we know? Because we have them parked every winter outside our window. Where do they all put their rubbish? Most of the time in the ‘basura’ street containers, where do they discharge their dirty water? Into the town’s sewerage. Can we remind these people that it is the residents who have to pay Suma for these services? I do agree with Dave on ‘Why do the Spanish town halls not create a designated service area?’ Only then can they enjoy their ‘new found freedom in retirement’ and not at the expense of other retirees who have

Correos bureaucracy!! I READ with interest your letter in this week’s Euroweekly regarding non-delivery of mail. We have experienced this for the past four years in Mil Palmeras, and yes, sometimes mail gets returned to sender if not collected but more often than not it is just binned! Despite the fact that the postman is here every day and passes my house at the same time every day, they refuse to deliver to the houses, so we decided to get mailboxes for those who requested them. After fighting for four years the Owners Association managed, at long last to get a wall big enough to take over 100 boxes and the town hall put these in place for us. All boxes were numbered and photos taken and the relevant form filled in and delivered to the Correos Sorting Office in Pilar de la Horadada. The Correos have now decided that they do not like the boxes numbered as we have them and they wish them to be numbered down rather than across. It looks like they will not budge on this despite assuring them that the next lot of boxes will be numbered as they request. Is this bureaucracy or just bloody mindedness? Doblas, Angel in the Shadow ON STAGE: The very entertaining Doblas.
THE history of punk music in Spain would not be complete without mentioning the name of Angel Doblas who was one of the founders of Granada band TNT and now fronts Doblas. His band is to play in Madrid next Friday but then travels to the Port of Spain bar in Almeria City on Saturday to give a free performance and promote the recently released ¿Hay Alguien Ahi? (Is There Anybody There?) album. This, the band’s most recent recording is released on the Clifford Records label which is itself based in Almeria, so perhaps this is a way for the band to interact with its label and local fans.
In the years since he first started performing, Angel Doblas has matured from a bass player to a talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and he readily admits that he is a great admirer of the work of David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Chris Spedding (perhaps better known as a much in demand session guitarist) and Status Quo. This doesn’t mean that a Doblas gig is a simple tribute to his favourite artists but with such a diverse range of influences, any performance by Doblas is bound to be a pulsating experience and if this appearance, which starts at 10pm, is a free gift to the city, then it is certainly well worth a visit.

FEST COLOURS FESTIVAL: Having fun with paint. I t ’s g o i n g t o b e l o u d with a range of techno, house, current Latino and urban music being played through some mega systems whilst everyone dances and covers each other with the paint powder. This isn’t a traditional rave as it is aimed at families so that children can take part and only those who are old enough to
purchase alcohol will be given a special coloured bracelet identifying their age. Tickets are currently on sale for €15 or €18 with travel to the venue at El Palmeral by bus or €20 at the box office. THE third Los Indalos de Flores (Festival of Flowers) will take place in Mojacar on Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27. It is expected that more than 6,000 flowers will be used in a range of Indalos (the Indalo is also the symbol of Almeria which is an image that supposedly dates back to the time of Columbus and his explorations) across the village. This flower festival encourages residents in the pueblo to brighten up their streets with the addition of beautiful flowers and
to appear in traditional Almerian costume as residents and visitors enjoy a heady mix of flamenco, tapas and drinks. There is a great deal of friendly rivalry amongst local participants as they all want to produce the best selection of floral tributes and be declared the overall winners of the festival. This relatively new event is an extension of the long-running and very popular May Crosses which also appear in towns across the province.

to Live Well by Andrew Harding THIS week’s recipe is more exotic than my previous ones, but still very easy to cook. Tuna is plentiful in Spain and not too expensive. The dark red tuna has a very strong ‘fishy’ taste and is not to everyone’s taste (including mine), but its paler cousins have a pleasant taste and texture. Swordfish, hake and other white fish can be used instead of tuna, I would not recommend salmon though as the taste will overpower the other ingredients. Cook according to taste, my preference is pink in the middle (the recipe has the ideal baking time for this) but if you like it slightly raw or well-cooked, deduct or add five minutes. Add more or less ginger and chilli according to your love (or lack of it)
TUNA: Can be cooked in the oven. for spicy hot food. Japanese Crusted Tuna with Spicy Noodles Serves 2 250 grams tuna, skinned and boned, cut into strips two inches thick 2 teaspoons Sichimi spice powder 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, ground 1 tablespoon Panko breadcrumbs 1 whole lemon juice 1 tablespoon vegetable oil For the Spicy Noodles 1 whole red pepper, seeded and chopped 1 whole shallot, skinned and chopped 3 whole garlic cloves, skinned and chopped
1. Mix Sichimi spice powder with ground black peppercorns and Panko breadcrumbs and place in bowl. 2. Add lemon juice and oil to a second bowl. 3. Put tuna in oil/juice mix and then coat with spice powder mix. 4. Place in oven pre-heated to 200 Celsius for about 15 minutes, remove. 5. Add vegetable oil to a wok and bring up to heat. 6. Add onion, red pepper, ginger and garlic, stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until almost cooked. Add noodles and continue to stir-fry until cooked through 7. Drizzle the noodle mixture with sesame seed oil. 8. Serve
Tip: FRESH fish can be frozen at home after purchase but it does impair its quality. Most of the fish caught at sea is frozen after being caught but because the process is carried out on a commercial basis (much colder and quicker than a domestic freezer) there is no deterioration in quality. Fish bought frozen from supermarkets and other sources use the same commercial techniques and provided it is allowed to defrost will keep well in a domestic freezer until it is to be used. Bacteria cannot grow in a domestic freezer at the recommended temperature of -18 Celsius, but the food will physically deteriorate. The best way to defrost fish (or anything else for that matter) is to place it in a sealable polythene food bag, fill the sink or a bowl with cold tap-water, put the bagged fish in the water and weight it down with a plate so it is submerged with the seal preferably being above the water. Thin food bags or cling film will allow water to diffuse through, contaminating the food.

Held over ‘false’ theft complaint AN Albox man who allegedly falsely reported his mobile phone as being stolen from his car has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Police claimed they began their investigation after receiving a complaint from the man who claimed he had returned to his vehicle to find the phone missing. The man added there were scratches on the driver ’s door which he believed were from someone using tools to break in. He then found his mobile phone, which he said was valued at around €1,200, was gone from inside. Police said their investigation found the phone was being used by another person in the Albox area.
They were then able to locate it, with the person using it claiming it was found by his girlfriend in February before handing it over to officers. The Guardia Civil took the complainant to speak with the man. He told officers he did not remember what had happened because he had drunk alcohol with friends and only realised the phone had gone missing. Police then went to check the damage on the car which the complainant had reported. Officers said they found none which suggested there had been a theft so they began to suspect the report was false. The man was then arrested and proceedings were sent to a court in Huercal-Overa.

by Joe Gerrard TWO brothers on trial accused of shooting their uncle dead at his Albox home following a dispute over inheritance have been found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict. Juan Andres and Pedro TG, aged 33 and 23 respectively, were also found guilty of the attempted murder of their cousin, the victim’s son. The Provincial Court of Almeria heard the jury’s verdict at a hearing on Friday. Jurors found Juan Andres TG had killed his uncle ‘voluntarily’ and that the victim had no chance to react or defend. Pedro had held the door to the building where the two defendant’s uncle lived during the shooting, making him an accomplice in the murder. The jury also found Juan Andres TG guilty of illegally possessing weapons for the modified revolver used in the shooting. Pedro TG was found not guilty for the charge after the

Jurors told the court they had determined Juan Andres TG was not under the influence of drugs when he committed the crime. The court heard previously that he was a habitual user of
cocaine, but police forensic officers had found no traces of the drug in his home during their investigation. The two defendants are now due to be sentenced by the court. Prosecutors have requested a total of 32 years and six months behind bars for Juan Andres TG and 15
years in prison for Pedro TG. The private prosecution brought against the defendants asked for a total of 40 years for Juan Andres TG and 24 for Pedro TG. Their defence lawyer said he would leave the court to determine the penalties when it meets for sentencing.

Big bucks win THE owner of a sealed lottery ticket in Albox will collect a €77,322.57 prize after it won ‘La Primitiva’ lottery’s second prize last Saturday. It is one of three second prize tickets won by matching five correct numbers and the bonus number. The ticket was validated in Albox’s number 5,710 lottery box. The other two were registered in El Vendrell (Tarragona) and Valdivia (Badajoz), the state lottery authority reports.

Sustainable business conference AN entrepreneurial group has hosted training days with 30 business people as part of a retail and online marketing workshop in Albox. Andalucia Emprende, which is attached to the region’s Ministry of Economy, hosted the meetings, the second of which focused on sustainable business in rural areas. The first talk of the second workshop covered the Andalucian commercial inspection plan 2018 and was hosted by Alfonso Jimenez Godoy and Juana Jimenez Corraliza, from the Economy Territorial Delegation. The commercial inspection plan meeting discussed the requirement for business people to put their companies on the Merchant’s Register. There were also explanations offered about holding opportunity fairs. Amparo Cantalicio Torres, a marketing director with the Strugal and Galisort group, also held a talk entitled marketing off and online. She said during the workshop businesses without a presence on the internet were losing their ability to relate to customers outside of making
direct sales. The third talk of the day was led by Paloma Migoya Gutierrez, an interior design professor from the University of Almeria. She said shops sell 24 hours a day because although the store closes, the shop continues to sell its products through its displays which attract attention and provide good publicity. Migoya is an expert on window displays, with her doctoral thesis having covered their history from 19th century Paris to the present day. The workshop closed with a round table talk featuring Migoya, Cantalicio and Virginia Saez from the Association of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of Albox (AEPA). It also featured Pedro Francisco Martinez, the treasure of the AEPA, Antonio Garcia from the Alpujarax online store and Juan Jose Bonilla, the director of Andalucia Emprende. The speakers discussed shop displays. Then the 20 traders there were tasked with coming up with their own designs based on advice from interior designer, Laura Lazaro which were then showcased.

School gets facelift THE ‘Medio Almanzora’ Rural Public School (CPR) has benefitted from renovations making it fit for teachers to properly prepare students’ learning. Albox City Council has expanded the school with a spacious 70-metre-squared workroom and equipped it with decent facilities. The school is now located in Albox’s town centre near the ‘Virgen del Saliente’ infant school, after changing location several times. It serves students from different towns around the Albox region. Renovation works include the installation of flooring, reparations to the entrance and classroom doors and bathroom refurbishments. Workers also gave its walls and outer facade a fresh lick of paint, replaced the windows and protected them with bars. The facelift means the school now has a proper teacher’s room and administration centre fit for the related tasks.

Summer nights on the terrace WITH long summer nights on the way, outdoor spaces are an ideal place to savour the warmer nights. While Spain’s retailers cater for all needs, there are some more inexpensive ways to decorate your terrace or garden hideaway. In the garden, a more stylish alternative to cheap plastic seating is to use low cost concrete blocks topped off with a foam pad and some bright cushions. Likewise a similar configuration can be made to create dining tables with strips of decking as table tops.
Outdoor lights hung over the terrace, or wrapped around a pergola can create a much more convivial atmosphere for you and your guests. Fabrics draped around the patio have a dual purpose of creating shade and privacy, especially if you are overlooked by neighbours. Make the most of your plants, no matter how simple, by making them a central feature of the terrace or garden, using brightly coloured pots, framing them, lining them on shelves or if you are fond of urban design, hang them in a vertical box or container.

Gardening on a budget GARDENING on a budget doesn’t mean splashing out on expensive gardening accessories. Recycling your cartons and packaging can be a useful way of saving on essential gardening aids whose costs add up if you buy them from specialist gardening stores. One way of planting seeds for example is by using cardboard egg cartons to make a seed raising tray. These can also help the environment as they degrade naturally. Firstly, though, the egg carton pots have to be moistened and kept wet daily. Once ready to plant, cut out each egg cup and plant the whole ‘pot’ in the soil just as it is. Don’t throw out the plastic pots which you get from plants either. They can be redecorated and used again for another plant. In fact, any container can be used for replanting as long as it has holes for drainage. So, tin cans, plastic bottles with the tops cut off, plastic tubs, old boots, bags, anything can be used. Labels for seedlings can also be made from old

BMW unveil all-electric SUV BMW has revealed its brand new concept all-electric SUV, the BMW iX3, which is set to directly rival new models released by Tesla, Audi and Jaguar. The iX3, which was unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show, is set to be the brand’s first all-electric vehicle and could hit showrooms as soon as 2020. BMW have said that the iX3, closely based on the popular X3, will be capable of producing 249 miles of range on a single charge, while the 70kWh battery can be recharged in just 30 minutes on a fast charger. The iX3 has very similar characteristics to the X3, with its instantly definable trademark front grille, but also contains new features such
as blue accents to highlight the electric power. Its electric motor will produce 266bhp, but BMW claim they may increase that to an impressive 532bhp if it chooses to choose an all-wheel drive option. BMW’s first all-electric SUV is expected to directly rival electric model concepts released by competing car brands in recent months including the Jaguar I-Pace, the Tesla Model X and the Audi e-tron, which is set to be released later this year. Mercedes is also expected to release their electric ECQ in 2019. The German car giants have also promised an all-electric 5 series, expected to have close to 400 miles of range, which will follow in 2021.

A real life transformer
INVENTORS for Japan-based Brave Robotics have reportedly created a ‘real life transformer.’ Dubbed the J-deite RIDE, the robot/car can reportedly transform from a functioning sports car to a 3.6-metre (12- foot) robot in just 60 seconds.
When in car form, the invention can reportedly sit two passengers and allegedly reach a top speed of 40mph, while in robot form it is capable of walking just 100 metres per hour. Kenji Ishida, Brave Robotics chief executive officer, said: “The robots I’ve seen in animation movies since
childhood all had this kind of look and they transform into or combined with each other to become something else with people on board. “So I grew up believing that robots had to be capable of such things, which became my motivation to develop this robot.”
