€75m coke stash held in swoop SPANISH drugs police have intercepted more than a ton of cocaine worth around €75 million hidden in a container bound for Spain from Colombia. In a joint operation between the National Police, Tax Agency, DEA office in Madrid and the customs department ZOLL of Bremen (Germany), 1,109 kilos of the narcotic was reportedly found among a shipment of eight containers containing plasterboard panels. The manager of the receiving company has been held on suspicion of drug trafficking. The shipment, bound for Algeciras, was stopped and inspected at the port of Bremerhaven in Germany, but in order to find those responsible for receiving the drugs in Algeciras, the container was allowed to continue to Spain.

EXCLUSIVE By Matt Ford A COSTA DEL SOL restaurateur is appealing for witnesses to a suspected arson attack. “We are so well-known here and get on so well with all our neighbours, I just can’t understand why somebody would do this,” said Malika El Kasri, 46. “The fire brigade said it was an arson attack and had been started deliberately using petrol, gas or something.” It comes after flames ripped through the terrace of Greek-style eatery Santorini in Fuengirola, which Malika runs with 49-year-old husband Khalid, destroying furniture and part of the façade of the otherwise residential building, while the interior and kitchen were unaffected. The couple are originally from Morocco and moved to

THOUSANDS of people flocked to the graves of deceased relatives to pay respect as Spain marked the Dia de Todos los Santos (All Saints’ Day). As is custom, many Spaniards took the national holiday as an opportunity to return home and decorate the graves of dead family members with elaborate floral displays. Town councils also made sure local graveyards were cleaned and ready for yesterday’s public holiday. As happens every year, the graveyards were crowded with visitors, the surrounding roads were packed with traffic and stalls selling flowers lined the streets. Many also indulged in the traditional food eaten on this day, including chestnuts and sweet treats.

Family fortune No ‘shroom for error! Wild mushroom season is officially upon us and is the highlight of the year for fungi fans, reports Kat Ashton.

The mushroom business is estimated to be worth millions of euros each year, and a whole range of varieties grow across the Iberian Peninsula. Experts believe that the climate creates the ideal environment for mushrooms to grow, with hot summers followed by autumn downpours. The season tends to fall in October or November but can be earlier or later, depending on the weather. Due to the increase in popularity, many companies now organise mushroom hunts to help tourists seek out the best areas where they are found, often followed by a tasting. As edible and toxic mushrooms tend to grow side by side, it is always advisable to go foraging for mushrooms with such an expert. There are around 50 species of poisonous fungi in Europe, and six of these can be lethal. Mushrooms or setas are a staple Spanish cuisine and are often served on their own as the popular tapas dish champinones al ajillo (garlic mushrooms), as well as being used to make stews, soups and croquettes.

Great Spanish inventions VERY country can lay claim to a number of great inventions and Spain is no exception, although some are more mundane than others. The first moon walk and astronauts floating around in space would not have been possible had it not been for Spaniard Emilio Herrera Linares, inventor of the first ever space suit in 1935. One small leap for man, one giant leap for Spain! Guitars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but around nine centuries ago, there were just two variations being plucked across Medieval Spain. They were eventually lost to a new design, la vinhuela, the first guitar to use six strings, in the 15th century. Little changed again until the 19th century when Antonio Torres Jurado, a Sevillano, made alterations to give us the acoustic guitar of today. In 1949, Spanish teacher, writer and inventor Angela Ruiz Robles had the idea to lighten the weight of the books carried by her students. She came up with a device she named the Mechanical Encyclopaedia, which was the first electronic book and was awarded a patent for her invention.

Someone had to come up with the idea of fortifying the sweet Spanish wine from Jerez de la Frontera and as sales were reduced dramatically by the Napoleonic wars, much of the unsold sherry began to oxidise. Port which was becoming a firm favourite with the British and was easily available was created by the addition of brandy and by the time that the Bodegas in Jerez were free to export their wines again, they experimented with different blends and discovered that brandy not only strengthened their wine but also slowed down oxidation. The rest as they say is history. The traditional Spanish beret, or boina, is one of the oldest Spanish inventions as it was

created by shepherds in the damp and cold Basque Country hundreds of years ago to keep their heads warm and dry. Aeronautic engineer Manuel Jalón Corominas whilst visiting the US in the 1950s saw cleaners in an aircraft hangar wringing out a cloth through rollers which inspired him to create his version of the humble mop, making its head circular and adding a grill with which to squeeze out the excess liquid into the bucket. For the man who has everything, an unknown inventor from the Basque Country created the first stapler for the French King Louis XV with each staple being engraved with the royal cipher. Chocolate was first cultivated in South America, where the indigenous people drank it bitter or sometimes flavoured with spices. When the Spanish conquistadors landed on the continent, they did not take to the original mix, instead opting to create their own version sweetened with sugar. For years they kept their prized chocolate a close guarded secret, but fortunately for us they eventually chose to share it with the royal courts of Europe. Staying with sweet things, Enric Bernat invented the popular Chupa Chups lollipops in 1958 as he realised that young children in particular managed to make a sticky mess with sweets, so by placing the sweet on a stick, the problem was resolved. The sweets were so popular that even Salvador Dali was persuaded to design a new logo for them which is still used today.

T is no secret that over the years Hollywood has had an issue with

diversity. The year 2016 saw the #OscarsSoWhite campaign which criticised the lack of representation for African American, Latino and Asian actors during the awards seasons. This year, with the likes of Moonlight cleaning up at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars, it would seem that Hollywood is slowly learning its lesson. Although we are still a long way from the equal recognition that many of these impressive actors deserve, many great Spanish born actors have paved the way for future generations to take advantage of the changing tide. The likes of dynamic husband and wife duo Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are a prime example. Bardem became the first Spaniard to win an Oscar, winning Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for his role as the psychopathic assassin in No Country for Old Men.

FOCUSED: Nievas refereed at the Women’s World Cup earlier this year.

An official success! Benjamin Park speaks to the first woman to referee a men’s rugby International in Europe. UGBY is often described as a game of respect and discipline; terms that are undoubtedly personified by one Andalucian woman who recently made history in the sport, Alhambra Nievas. In October, Nievas became the first woman to officiate a men’s Rugby International in Europe when she oversaw Finland defeat Norway 15-8 in the Rugby Europe Championship. Despite this achievement, she remained modest and grounded over the course of our interview, with her dedication to the sport obvious throughout, epitomised by her choice to focus predominately on the match itself, rather than her personal accomplishment. She said: “I feel very happy and motivated to take this new opportunity with both hands. It was a great challenge. “It was a tight game that required a lot of focus. “Players and staff from both teams had a positive spirit and it was very natural for us as the refereeing team. “I hope that one day we don’t talk about the gender in the refereeing, we talk about work, development and performance.” Compared to most, Nievas, originally from Granada, first found rugby at a reasonably late age. It was at the University of Malaga where she discovered her passion for the sport. “I started playing at University when I was 19 years old. Some friends talked about the rugby team and I was very curious because I’d never heard about

“I learn, grow and enjoy the road.” it, although I played lot of sports when I was a child. “I fell in love in the first training session; the adrenaline, contact, skills. In rugby, you work as a team with one goal on the field. “But rugby is more than sport, it’s a life philosophy because it gives you lots of values: respect, sportsmanship, equality, and solidarity.” The 34-year-old went on to captain her University side and became a prominent figure in the Spanish National side later in her career, before eventually hanging up her playing boots for the whistle in 2012. “When I started refereeing, I carried on playing for the first five years and my priority was being a player,” she said. “Then when national opportunities came to referee at the men’s top division in Spain and also international appointments, I decided to stop.

“It was a tough decision because I love playing but I don’t regret it and I have a lot of support from my team, family and friends.” Since embarking on her refereeing career, Nievas has continued to succeed. She became the first female match official in a men’s test when she was assistant for USA against Tonga, and also refereed at the 2016 Olympic Games and the World Cup earlier this year. But when asked on her favourite career moment so far, there was a standout choice. “If I have to choose one, it is Rio Olympics in 2016,” she said. “This moment was when my player and referee goals joined. It was an amazing experience.” The pinnacle of her meteoric rise in the refereeing world came last year, when she was awarded the World Rug-

by Referee award, alongside South African Referee Rasta Rasivhenge. On receiving the award, she said: “It was a big moment in my career. I can't explain what I felt at that moment. “It was very special considering all the work and commitment when I made the decision to start a professional career in refereeing.” Women’s rugby is a sport that continues to grow with audiences around the world, with new opportunities for participation coming to fruition continuously. This year’s World Cup Final between England and New Zealand reportedly hit peak viewing figures of 2.6 million on ITV but although there are obvious signs of improvement, Nievas admits there is still work to be done. “It is getting better and better but we still have a way to go. “We need to make a difference in some roles as coaches, referees, managers and responsibilities in the unions. “The women’s game is growing fast, both 7s and 15s, but we still need more exposure and to develop in new countries with some resource problems.” Finally, when asked about what the future holds for her, her response again reflected her character: humble, appreciative but driven to succeed. “I keep my goals on the basis of learn, grow and enjoy the road,” she said. “I think when you achieve them (goals), new challenges come, so I hope other new opportunities will come in the international stage and not only for myself, but for the new generation that now see a future being a referee.”

Marbella Moments by Nicole King WHILST zapping through the channels last night it caught my attention to hear Marbella’s mayor explaining that our British tourist is as of equal importance for the future of Marbella as it has been in the past. She pointed out that Spain already occupies a preferential place for British tourism, the fourth most important in the world in terms of international departures. Two out of every three travellers in Andalucia choose Malaga as their preferred destination and clearly Marbella holds a particularly relevant position within the province for its extensive offer for tourists and residents alike. She proudly confirmed that Marbella also has a lot of repeat tourism with some returning up to six or seven times a year and that the four tourism offices had handled more than 30,000 consultations just from Brits between January and September of this year! Angeles Muñoz explained that Marbella is participating this year at the World Travel Market (WTM) with its own stand within the framework of the already existing contract to participate in various tourism fairs that had already been agreed and awarded to El Corte Inglés as sponsors. brush against Bruno! Maybe Len needs to return and sort it all out, as only he can? A show that on paper shouldn’t work, but on the screen really does, is James and Jupp (BBC2 Wales, Sunday). Maybe a touch of Miss Marple is needed to find this given the channel, but if you want a blast of stunning countryside and two-blokes-in-a carhumour, seek it out. The format is simple: comedians Elis James and Miles Jupp take a car trip around

Wales, and while it isn’t Top Gear or the sort of comedy normally familiar from these two, the banter is genuine and the trip on the A470 connecting south and north Wales is spectacular. Meanwhile I am getting increasingly worried by some content panellists on Loose Women (ITV, weekdays) are being given to work with. As daytime telly, viewers expect mixed topics to be discussed from hard hitting to trivial. But a recent item asked if viewers suffered ‘avocado anxiety,’ a term used following re-

search that revealed a fear among one in three millennials when their avocados aren’t ripe. This may be about the right level for lovely Stacey Solomon and lets face it Linda Robson will read anything from autocue, but the likes of Janet Street-Porter and Ruth Langford as serious commentators surely deserve something better. The latest written-by and starring Jack Whitehall offering Bounty Hunters (SKY1, Wednesday) pairs Jack with Rosie Perez, while Robert Lindsay and

Charity Wakefield are thrown in for good measure. As Jack has written this one I am unsure why he has cast himself as a middle class fool; maybe just to reinforce his one-trick pony CV? His character, Barnaby - why give him such a name Jack? - is trying to save the failing family antiques business and gets involved with looted treasures from the East. It is unclear how this will play out, but Rosie is gorgeous and Jack looks good with spectacles and trimmed beard, so I’m sticking with it. Finally, The Crown (Netflix) starts a second season on December 8. With the story known inside out, based on season one there will be little if anything new. STRICTLY COME DANCING (BBC1, Saturday & Sunday) continues to delight with glitz and sparkle even though I wasn’t sure that without Sir Bruce and Seven-loving Len it would remain as a weekend favourite. But it most certainly is. Twitter-using fans of the show will have seen a flood of comments about the camera angles over recent weeks and I agree. Clearly someone has a new box of tricks and wants to throw them all at the dancers, with cameras spinning around the dance floor, way too many overhead shots and on one occasion a lens so close to the dancing couple there was a real danger of a collision. Beeb should be ashamed CASSANDRA NASH definitely hits the nail on the head this week (issue 1686) referring to the UK media’s inaccurate reporting on the Catalan situation. I agree with her 100 per cent! I was shocked and angry at the way the BBC described the attempted Catalan Independence coup. Disgusted at the biased one-sided sensationalist take on the whole sorry affair. Anyone would think Cataluña is a poor, downtrodden little region subjected to the evil tyranny of Madrid, instead of the wealthy, well-treated, spoiled region that it really is.

Costa del Sol port cruises to record year Malaga Port may have a record 2017 but I just arrived back yesterday on the Pullmantur Horizon cruise ship and it was confirmed on board that they will NOT be using Malaga to board or disembark passengers in 2018 due to a massive increase in port costs! Amrik Sappal, Store Director, Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola THE most common vision problems are refractive errors, more commonly known as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. Most people have one or more of these conditions. In this column we wanted to explain what they mean and how can they be corrected. What is myopia/short sight and how can it be corrected? A person with myopia or short sight can see objects close to them clearly, but not far away. Myopia is caused by the shape of the eye; either the eyeball is slightly too long or the cornea is too steeply curved. Myopia is corrected by spectacles or contact lenses with lenses which are ‘minus’ or concave in shape. What is hyperopia/hypermetropia/long sight and how can it be corrected? A person with long sight can see objects far away from them clearly, but not those close by. This is caused by the shape of the eye - the eyeball is slightly too short. It is corrected by spectacles or contact lenses with lenses which are ‘plus’ or convex in shape. What is astigmatism and how can it be corrected?

People with astigmatism have an unevenly curved cornea or an unevenly curved lens inside their eye, shaped more like a rugby ball than a football. It is corrected by spectacles with a cylinder shape built into the lenses at a certain angle. Contact lenses can also correct astigmatism mild astigmatism can be corrected by an ordinary gas-permeable lens. Those who prefer a soft lens or have higher amounts of astigmatism can use specially designed, ‘toric’ soft lenses. What is presbyopia? As a person ages, so do their eyes. The crystalline lenses become thicker and less flexible, resulting in a condition called presbyopia. People often begin to notice its effects during their 40’s - as a result of these changes, objects closer to them become blurred and the point of closest focus gradually moves further away from the eyes.

The flu is an infection in the respiratory system caused by a virus that can bring about several symptoms that do not necessarily appear at the same time. In general a person suffering from the flu will have a cough, fever, pains in their muscles and extremities, feel run down, tiredness, loss of appetite and lack of energy. These symptoms can last several days. A person usually recovers gradually over a few days, however for some it can take several weeks before they are fully recovered. How can you treat it? Usually the best course of treatment is to take medication to manage the symptoms along with rest and plenty of hydration. In more severe cases antiviral or antibiotic medication may be required to deal with the virus. Should I seek medical

help? It is recommended that you see your doctor for an initial evaluation so they can refer you to specialists or to take further tests if they are necessary. When would it be advisable to get a flu jab? The vaccination campaigns tend to start in autumn and it is recommended that you get the jab especially if you have a high risk of catching the flu. The elderly and those suffering from chronic illnesses are also advised to get vaccinated. Are there people who are vulnerable to the virus? People over the age of 65 are more likely to get the flu, and to suffer more seriously from it. Anyone with respiratory illnesses such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or asthma, or other chronic illnesses such as diabetes and those suffering from cancer are the most vulnerable to the virus.

But when it comes to wine consumption per capita then Spain perhaps surprisingly to many lags behind 17 other nations in global rankings. Raising awareness for Alzheimer’s MORE than 300 people attended the annual meeting for relatives of Alzheimer sufferers in Benalmadena at the Hotel THB Torrequebrada Class on Friday afternoon. During the event, presented by journalist Domi del Postigo, volunteers from the Family Members of Alzheimer Patients Association in Benalmadena (AFAB) celebrated the organisation’s success and that of the Luces de la Memoria Choir, made up of AFAB patients. “We want to thank all the people who joined us tonight and all those who made this event possible; the city of Benalmadena, the Hotel Torrequebrada and the journalist Domi del Postigo, who was in charge of hosting duties,” said Mari Cruz Azuaga, the president of AFAB. She also thanked the services of Autobuses Diego Moral, “a local company that is always willing to help us.” The event was attended by Victor Navas, the mayor of Benalmadena, Irene Diaz, councillor for Social Welfare, and other town councillors including Pedro Perez, councillor for Social Welfare in

Birds do best in gardens with multiple storeys of plants from ground covers, shrubs as under storeys to taller tree canopies as an upper storey. Providing water in the dry months in safe places for birds to drink is the sure way to have birds attracted to your garden. A steady, reliable source of water is a primary need, even more than food, if other sources of water are not nearby. If you provide water, birds will visit regularly, if you provide food plants, they will stay longer and if you provide safe shelter as well, native birds may start to nest in your garden. Migratory birds will only visit but are more likely to visit if you have a food source as well as water. There are many plants that can provide food for the birds. As different bird species have different requirements of seed, nectar or insects, a variety of different plants are needed to attract the bird species you wish to support in your garden. ATTRACTING BIRDS: Each species have different needs. ring non-invasive native plants - even the plants considered weeds in the ornamental and vegetable garden - to go through their full life cycle. Many plants considered weeds are useful plants for birds to feed on for the flowers nectar and seeds. Birds usually prefer to ar-

rive onto the upper storey to survey a garden for food and dangers before entering and different species build their nests in the upper storey for safety from ground based predators. Each bird species have different needs, however, so many smaller birds will look for nesting places in the under storey that have dense thickets that prevent larger predators to enter. So to at-

tract a wide range of birds having a wide range of plants that give good protection is important for diversity. Plants that provide nectar include Sages (Salvia species), Grevillea species, Torch lilies (Kniphofia species), Lobelia species, Penstemon species, Verbena species, Sunflowers (Helianthus), Thyme (Thymus species), Lavender (Lavendula species) , Honeysuckle

(Lonicera species), Ice Plant (Sedum species), Firethorn (Pyracantha species) and Barberry (Berberis species). Seed plants include Sunflower (Helianthus species), Coneflower (Echinacea species), Aster species, Zinnea species, Cumin ( Cuminum species), Calendula species and many others. Attracting birds can just be a matter of widening the range of plants that you normally grow which may provide even more interest to your garden as many bird food plants are very attractive. Hedges and thickets of plants will provide safe nesting places for smaller birds and tall trees can have nesting boxes installed to make trees a ready made nesting place. Applying natural mulches around your garden will help birds find materials to build the nests. There is a wide variety of birds that live in the Mediterranean zone and if you make your garden more attractive for them, you can enjoy their presence in your garden.

Good neighbours WHILE many people arrange their garden on what they think looks best, it is actually more beneficial to put plants that help each other out beside one another. In the gardening community, this is known as ‘companion planting’ and it can have a big impact on the health and vitality of your garden. Companion planting is all about achieving a good balance, and it can even help reduce the amount of pest or disease control spray you need to use. By introducing more plants that repel unwanted bugs, or attract larger insects to eat the pests, this can help protect your garden without overloading it with chemicals. It is even possible to create plant ‘communities.’ Certain species enhance each other’s growth rate by distributing extra nutrients into the soil or by offering protection from the sun or wind. One of the most popular ‘companion planting’ combinations is rose and garlic, as garlic is believed to repel aphids and other pests. Nasturtium and cabbage also work well together.

Dogs simply cannot metabolise and excrete methylxanthines as efficiently as humans. The half-life of those compounds in the human body is in the order of two to three hours, in a dog it is more like 18 hours. In a dog the compounds are taken up by the liver and transmitted via the bile into the intestine. They are then converted back into the original methylxanthines for another circuit through the animal. This repeats itself a number of

Hopes and fears for UK’s niche motors TOYOTA pulled out all the stops to woo motoring enthusiasts at the Tokyo Motor Show, one of the wackiest spectacles in the business. The Japanese firm used its home country to launch its sleek new concept car, the FT-1, and its futuristic new taxi. The aptly named ‘Japan Taxi’ is slated for release ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It is a hybrid fuelled by an electric motor and liquified petroleum gas which has been developed for at least four years by the firm’s top engineers. Extremely accessible with a low door and huge windows, it is

wheelchair friendly and resembles a futuristic London Black Cab. It will be expected to dramatically cut pollution in the mega-city. It pales in comparison to the Toyota Century, the third generation of the limousine originally invented for the Imperial Family. The latest version has a V8 hybrid drivetrain, is 5.3 metres long, costs more than €100,000, and is relatively hard to find, with just 600 to be built a year. It wouldn’t be a Japanese motor show without at least some element of robotics. Toyota didn’t

fail to disappoint with its introduction of ‘The Agent.’ Formerly known as ‘Yui,’ The Agent was described by Toyota as “more than a machine, a partner.” The Agent is an in-car com-

puter system guided by artificial intelligence which can analyse facial expressions and voice tones to better ‘understand’ the driver. It will even study Facebook and Twitter feeds to build a picture of its driver’s personality.

The Agent will understand when drivers are tired, perhaps even before they do via body language analysis, and make suggestions accordingly. It will also help with directions, music, calls and other standard tools.

Cool customer THE 150 millionth Volkswagen rolled off the production line into the arms of a happy customer last week. The car is a plug-in hybrid Golf GTE. Built in Wolfsburg it was dispatched to Norway, one of the world’s top green car destinations. Volkswagen is planning to have built one million electric cars within the next decade. CEO Matthias Muller launched a scathing attack on American tech company Tesla, which is pioneering new electric and autonomous vehicles. “There are companies which sell 80,000 cars a year,” he said, “then there are companies like Volkswagen, selling 11 million a year,” Muller mused as he announced VW’s determination to dominate the electric market.

The Bond in Motion exhibition featured some of the fastest, loudest and sleekest motors seen in films from The Spy Who Loved Me to Skyfall. British actress Naomie Harris was one of the latest Bond girls, playing Eve Moneypenny in Skyfall. In the 2012 film she (and a stunt double) had the pleasure of driving the Land Rover Defender on display at the exhibition. Then there was the Ford Ka driven by Ukrainian Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko in Quantum of Solace. Unlike the Land Rover and Aston Martin partnerships, Ford’s Ka didn’t get much benefit from the Bond franchise and soon fizzled out. Naturally there was the

Tour d’ Extremadura

Route of the castles of Spain? From the Montes de Malaga it started! Motoring correspondent Ian Giles reports on the latest news from the Andalucia Classic Car Club, the most successful such society in the area and probably in Spain with over 600 members. ver 30 cars, an absolutely full entry, gathered on Monday morning last week at Venta Carlos del Mirador on the main A-7000 road out of Malaga towards the Montes de Malaga. All crews excited, looking forward to getting going on the 2017 Tour D’Extremadura. A gorgeous variety of cars arrived for breakfast that morning including Peter Pollet in a spectacular 1920’s Bentley Speed 8, Haig Oundijan, in contrast, in a stunning red Ferrari F430 Spyder, a brace of the new F-Type Jaguars alongside the stunning 1965, red Jaguar EType of Peter Cross. Quite a number of Jaguars were entered and, at the start, eight of them lined up together which was, in itself, quite an impressive sight. Other notable cars that were entered included a beautiful red Mercedes 280SL Pagoda and a Triumph TR6 also in red belonging to Carl Cullimore. A regular on all these events, Stefan and Judith Nicholson brought their trusty and stunning, white Morgan +8 while David Stone had Ian Giles’ lovely green MGR V8. Mac McCarthy and Jerry Watson (Team Naughty Boys) shared the driving of Mac’s very original 1989 four-wheel drive Porsche 964 while Bruce and Gwenda Goodson had their late model Porsche 911 to enjoy. delivery of a superb red Lexus SC430 sports, yet another burbling V8 to have fun with! Add to this Barry and Julie Surtees’ yellow Corvette C5, a number of Mercedes Sports, Jaguars and Peter Bull’s impressive Nissan 350Z and that made up quite an entry list. The object was to get to, and to see, Extremadura so the first day saw a spectacular run over the Montes de Malaga, past Alfarnate and the famous Alfarnate Inn and then over the top of the lakes of Iznajar where stunning views were enjoyed. On through Priego de Cordoba to the Parador in Cordoba itself for the first night halt. A welcome cocktail party out on the warm terrace was followed by a Gala, Black-Tie dinner and something of a party after that! Next was a longer day heading for the Parador in Guadalupe, now really well into Extremadura. And, what a stunning place that is! Extremadura’s landscapes are characterised by the mountain ranges of Cordillera Central, the Montes de Toledo, and Sierra Morena along with the plains and fertile valleys of the rivers Tajo and Guadiana and the plain lands of Low Extremadura. An important area for wildlife, the region hosts two designated Natural Parks where wild Iberian pigs roam before being turned into beautiful Jamon Iberico! The Tour route is a great way to follow in the steps of the Conquistadors, adventurers and pioneers with a chance to see rural Spain at its best and most enchanting. The area is littered with mediaeval palaces and castles, where the route took some of its night halts, and dined in luxury in elegant dining rooms. It was rather like stepping back in time and seeing parts of Spain just as they were hun-

dreds of years ago. Day 2 was a longish but fast, easy-driving route through spectacular countryside before finishing for the night in the beautiful Parador of Guadalupe. On the morning of Day 3, cars gathered in front of the spectacular Monestario in Guadalupe before setting off for a short drive skirting the lakes of Garcia Sola before crossing the Rio Tajo and into the old town of Oropesa and it’s Parador where all took dinner together whilst the cars sat outside in a specially floodlit car park. It was indeed a spectacular sight! Everyone seemed to enjoy the marvellous Parador in Oropesa. The following day (Day 4) took the cars through the Parque Natural of Monfrague before enjoying a night halt in the very medieval Trujillo. Some crews took a train ride to explore this marvellous city and all thoroughly enjoyed the restaurants and bars of this fascinating place where, it is said, the first adventurers gathered to set off to explore the Americas. In fact, Trujillo has many links with the Trujillo that is in Peru as Triumph TR6 co-driver Maria Cullimore, herself from Peru, confirmed. Day 5 saw the crews depart Trujillo and take a fairly long but marvellous drive across country through Guarena, Hornachos and Palomas to finish in Aracena in Huelva Province. Very fast, straight country roads with virtually no traffic was the reward for this fabulous 277 km journey. Even after coffee stops and light lunches, crews all easily made the Convento Aracena by mid afternoon in time to get ready for a ‘last supper’ together and something of a party afterwards. The week seemed to be over as fast as it began, although the Monday morning start still seemed a very long time ago! Departing Aracena, Day 6 was a pleasant drive to by-pass Sevilla and head cross-country towards Utrera and then Ronda. The finish itself was at the superb Molino del Santo in Benaojan where a first-class lunch was enjoyed. Two prizes were presented by Ian Giles, one for the most desirable car of the event, which was voted for by participants, and went to the white F-Type Jaguar of John

and Angela Lane. The award for ‘Spirit of The Event,’ was much approved by all and went to Peter and Pauline Bull in their Nissan 350Z. It was unanimously agreed that this was one of the best ‘Tours’ so far, in marvellous company and extremely well organised. On to the next ‘Big One’ in early February, although the CCCA monthly classic car runs continue as usual, the next one on Saturday, November 11. Non-members and guests are also welcome to attend the Club’s monthly dinner and Clubnight at El Chaparral on Tuesday, November 7. That’s it for this week.

RIO FERDINAND’S decision to step into the boxing ring brought back memories of retired footballer octogenarian Peter Higham - who recalls scoring a goal - while wearing a boxing glove! Ex-Nottingham Forest striker Higham, 86, found himself on the canvas in a derby clash against arch rivals Notts County in 1956, when he clattered a post, sustaining injuries. “I got barged into the goalpost, sustaining a broken and dislocation of a finger, in a local derby against Notts County at Meadow Lane,” said Higham. “Trainer Tommy Graham got a boxing glove - God knows where from - and got permission from the referee for me to wear it, to protect my finger,” said Higham. “I remember the pain was excruciating. To this day, I can’t straighten my little finger,” said Higham. Ex-Manchester United and England defender Ferdinand is bidding to become a professional at Cruiserweight after signing up to a lucrative deal with a bookmaker.

Under 14s win Gold Cup in rugby tournament A HISTORIC day for the players from Club Rugby del Estrecho from Sotogrande as they lifted the Gold Cup in this prestigious twoday tournament in Sevilla. Twenty teams from all over Spain and Portugal were involved and the youngsters from Estrecho came out on top. They came through the group stages on the opening day and won their semi-final against a very good tackling Ciencias team from Sevilla 31-0. In the final they took on Portuense from Cadiz, a side that Estrecho had lost heavily to a year ago in the league. However Estrecho have recruited some strong new players and are extremely well coached by ex-England U18 and U19 player Adrian Parsons and Carlos Rolin.

In the first half the play went from end to end with Spike Parsons scoring the first try for Estrecho that was converted by Manu. Portuense fought back and the scores were level at seven all at half time. In a tense start to the second half Estrecho’s forwards made a lot of metres with their strong runs and passing which allowed the fast backs to get the ball to their strongest runner Mateo Isola who powered over for two tries converted by Manu. Even though Portuense scored another try the Estrecho defence stood strong for a historic win 21-14 to lift the Gold Cup. BARCELONA-born goalkeeper David Raya is set to return to FA Cup action as Blackburn Rovers host Barnet at Ewood Park on November 4. “I’ve been here since I was 16 and it feels like home,” said Raya, who signed a new extended contract at Lancashire League One club Rovers this year. Raya, who has featured in five FA Cup ties since arriving in England as a teenager, joined Rovers Academy from Barcelona outfit UE Cornella in 2012. “It feels great,” said Raya, 22, who signed professional forms in 2014, and has worked his way up to claim the number one jersey. “It’s a chance to carry on at this great club,” said Raya, under former Celtic manager Tony Mowbray. After four months’ loan at Southport in 2014, where Raya made 15 appearances in the Conference Premier, he returned, making his Rovers first team debut against Leeds United in 2015. “Leeds was where I made my full debut and it couldn’t have gone any better, we won 3-0,” said Raya, whose previous three year deal was set to end in 2018. Members of Real Club Valderrama realise their dream MEMBERS of the Real Club Valderrama have acquired Valderrama SA (94 per cent), the company that owns the Valderrama golf course in Sotogrande, from Zagaleta International United Kingdom for â‚Ź28 million. The purchase agreement includes the famous Championship golf course, Par 3

course, practice facilities, Clubhouse, Valderrama Golf trademarks and several residential plots adjacent to the course. The transaction was finalised after several months of negotiations and has fulfilled the desire of members to acquire the course after many years of freehold agreements.

This deal puts an end to the arbitration process initiated by Real Club Valderrama last March, in which it reclaimed its preferential acquisition right over the golf course. The Zagaleta group will continue with the golf, hotel and residential project in Castellar de la Frontera.
