Housing court case continues THE former mayor of Alcaucin has denied any knowledge about tens of illegal building licences. Jose Manuel Martin Alba, who is on trial for alleged corruption, claimed he is not responsible for handing out the licences as he has no knowledge of town planning and the rules are confusing. His lawyer, Jose Maria Ramirez, is now asking for a full acquittal arguing his client’s fundamental rights are being violated and the crimes of others are being pinned on him. Prosecutors have said they do not believe Alba’s version of events, however, claiming he is showing “deliberate ignorance,” and has “the talents of a manipulator.” They claim he is responsible for handing out more than 100 illegal licences which allowed ‘the enrichment of the few.’
Teens held for selling cannabis TWO boys, aged 16 and 17, have been arrested for selling marihuana in Torre del Mar. Officers from the Local Police surprised the pair as they cut the drug ready for sale on the steps of a building on Avenida de Andalucia. The uniformed officers, who were in the area checking up on one of the boys, caught the pair after they tried to flee with their stash. The police confiscated 41 bags containing marihuana.

Family first Probe over contract scandal By Sally Underwood Velez-Malaga’s mayor has been summoned to testify in court over alleged irregularities in employing a council worker. Antonio Moreno Ferrer is being investigated for alleged crimes against a public body after it was alleged the former head of the municipal housing company Emvipsa created a job for his own son as a health and safety worker. The investigation began after a spokesman for the Partido Popular (PP), Francisco Delgado Bonilla, claimed the son of the company’s former manager, Jose Luis Sanchez Tore, was employed, “without procedure, to the point that he was first
hired and then afterwards the technician role was created.” The PP allege the job was a ‘prize’ after Sanchez Tore helped broker a deal between political parties PSOE and Grupo Independiente Pro Municipio de Torre del Mar (GIPMTM), allowing Antonio Moreno Ferrer to become mayor. The actual hiring took place while Ferrer was still
president of Emvipsa. The PP claimed the hiring was “an arbitrary decision,” and twice wrote to Emvipsa asking for the contract to be voided. According to Francisco Delgado Bonilla, the decision was made, “without any selection procedure, violating the principles of equality, merit and capacity. To create an indefinite contract it is vital to carry out a selection
process and this has not been done.” For their part, opposition party IU (Izquierda Unida) said the contract should have been rescinded but that it was now “too late.” The town hall declined to comment when contacted by the Euro Weekly News, but Señor Ferrer is expected to release a statement shortly.
Death inquest goes on A JUDGE in Santoña, Cantabria is probing a gas leak which killed a man from La Cala del Moral in Axarquia. Local man Jose Maria Callejon, aged 62, died and six people were hospitalised following a carbon monoxide leak at their hotel in Cantabria. A judge has now asked the Junta de Cantabria to provide an expert report into the incident. Thirty-five other people from the same hiking group who were also staying at the hotel have since returned home to Rincon de la Victoria in an emotional scene. Francisco Salado, the mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, was waiting to meet them. The group, who are mostly retired, were greeted with hugs and tears by loved ones, while Mayor Salado offered them the “total support” of the council.

Cancer hope MALAGA’S El Materno hospital is offering cancer patients the chance to preserve their fertility by freezing their eggs. Nine women have undergone the procedure at the hospital in the last two years so they can still bear children after their chemotherapy. This follows the passing of the Andalucian Law of Assisted Reproduction.

Defiant Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has repeated his determination to declare independence after officials claimed that 90 per cent of the 2.26 million voters in last Sunday’s referendum voted to leave Spain. It comes in the wake of a polling day marred by police violence which left almost 900 members of the public and more than 30 officers hurt. In a TV interview with the BBC on Tuesday, Puigdemont said he’d “act at the end of this week or the beginning of next.” But the Spanish government and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy remain adamant that the poll was illegal and refuse to recognise the result or discuss the issue with Cataluña. Tensions remain high and

And as the controversy drags on the European Union has remained notable for its silence despite Puigdemont’s appeals for Brussels to intervene. Rajoy may yet invoke article 155 which would enforce direct rule from Madrid on Cataluña, but Puigdemont said this would be “an error which changes everything.”

No fitting send-off for airline TENS of thousands of holidaymakers continue to be repatriated following the collapse of British airline Monarch. An estimated 32,503 travellers - out of more than 110,000 across Europe were left stranded in Spain, as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) takes on the ‘mammoth operation’ of returning them to the UK. British consular staff have been dispatched to Spanish airports. CAA chief executive Andrew Haines said they “got off to a good start” having already got more than 12,000 passengers home. Monarch declared itself bust after it was unable to renew its Air Travel Organiser’s Licence, forcing the carrier to axe more than 410,000 bookings.

UNDER THREAT: The Tajo. THERE are over 1,800 rivers in Spain. Most are fairly short and only carry water during certain times of the year. Dry riverbeds are a common sight, and the Spanish government has been using pipelines in recent years to divert water from the north to drier regions further south. Five of the main rivers in Spain flow out into the Atlantic Ocean, and several, including the Tajo and the Duero, pass through Portugal before they reach the coast. Others, including the Ebro, have their estuaries in the Mediterranean Sea. Many rivers irrigate fertile land enabling crops including rice, olives, grapes and corn to grow. They are also used to power hydroelectric plants and in some cases transport.

Dry as a bone THE River Tagus or Tajo, also known as the Tejo in Portugal, is the longest on the Iberian Peninsula and runs for more than 1,000 kilometres. It rises in the Sistema Iberico mountains near Madrid and passes through Toledo before crossing the Portuguese border and flowing out to the sea at Lisbon. Few towns are built along this river in Spain, with Toledo being the largest, as much of it passes through steep, rocky valleys which are unsuitable for building developments. The headwaters of the Tagus are in serious danger of drying up due to a combination of climate change and pipelines which transport water to drier regions including Almeria and Murcia.

The Ebro Delta, near Tarragona, contains one of Europe’s largest wetlands which is under threat due to water extraction to grow vegetables, fruit and, most significantly, rice. Dams upriver have also prevented silt reaching the delta, which is now in danger of being completely covered by water with a potentially disastrous impact on Spain’s food production.

Mother and son cancer victims need help By Karl Smallman A CROWDFUNDING page has been set up to help a family from Malaga, after both mother and son were diagnosed with cancer this year. Friends hope to raise enough cash so that single mum Amanda Edwards can take her two children, Abs (8) and Jose (12), on holiday to Disneyland in Paris to make special memories. Amanda was shocked when her son, Abs (short for Abraham) was diagnosed with two types of leukaemia earlier this year, and then was dealt the devastating blow that she had breast cancer just months later. They have been going through chemotherapy together. The translator for expats has been unable to work due to her treatment, so the family have lost their only source of income. Amanda moved to Malaga 17 years ago and has typically helped people who don’t speak Spanish with hospital appointments, legal translations, and

Adding to this hardship, Amanda’s sister-in-law was diagnosed with cancer two weeks before she was. Natalie Hancock, from Sandhurst, Berkshire, Amanda’s best friend of 40 years wanted to help the family through these difficult times.
The House Manager set up a JustGiving page to raise money for the family to go on holiday to Disneyland Paris. Writing on her JustGiving page, Natalie said: “Amanda has to fund so much of hers and her little boy’s treatment. As she is ill she is unable to work, so we need as much help as we can to assist with their treatment and making their lives as comfortable as possible.”

COMMON SENSE must prevail. And soon. The weekend debacle of the contentious Catalan referendum has increased national tensions and the situation now does not auger well for the future of either the Spanish region or the nation as a whole. Anyone in Cataluña who perhaps over the years naïvely thought that the State would just roll over and accept the move for independence once a referendum was planned must have a very short memory. For more than 50 years the nation stood up to ETA battling hard and violently for Basque separation. That failed, and if Spain was determined to fight that individual cause until a successful end, rest assured the corridors of powers are now just as determined. All the indications were on the table even before Sunday’s violence that so sadly for Spain saw almost 900 people hurt as police tried to stop the voting going ahead. Sunday’s vote was never going to end without injury, though fortunately there were no deaths. But there so easily could have been! Now both sides must sit down and resolve the issue already identified as illegal by the Constitutional Court. The two sides must look forward and resolve their differences for the future safety and security of both Cataluña and the nation as a whole. Maddocks’ view on life - Page 23.

Flea bites blight school PARENTS of children a t a s c h o o l i n Ve l e z Malaga have complained pupils are receiving flea bites. The Association of Mothers and Fathers (AMPA) has said it will organise a protest rally after claiming an empty lot next to the school is used by dogs carrying fleas. The Augusto Santiago Bellido school bought the vacant lot next to the building with a view to extending its playground. Work has not yet begun t o t h e s i t e , h o w e v e r, prompting parents to demand action. T h e a s s o c i a t i o n ’s president, Irene Peña, says the problem of flea bites is a recurring one, explaining, “Many people have been using the site, which has lacked maintenance for many years, to take their dogs to make their stools, which makes space a focus of rats and insects, and infection for school, as it borders on the playground.” The school’s teachers have also explained there are no fleas in the school itself but instead in the lot next door. They claimed the current playground is not large enough to accommodate the school’s 500 students and the site next door should be properly fitted out as a play area. The teachers also say the council fumigate the area whenever children complain of flea bites, but nothing more is ever done and the plot remains poorly maintained. As well as asking for the current playground to be extended, AMPA is also asking for the school’s dining room to be extended.
SIXTY-FIVE people in Velez-Malaga have received job training since July. Zoila Martin, councillor for Social Services, explained the workshops were offered to those receiving financial aid from the council. She added 90 per cent of attendees were single mothers without formal training or steady employment. The Department of Social Affairs started the project in July to “provide

Learning and earning tools to help people into the labour market and training to overcome social exclusion to the members of the 300 family units that are helped each year.” Councillor Martin explained the average attendees were “women aged around 45, without school qualifications, who
are separated and looking after children.” She added, “85 per cent of those women were nationals and only 10 per cent of the attendees were men. The aim was to provide the beneficiary with basic skills that will help them in the job search process to ensure they regain their
independence.” The workshops were held in four weekly sessions in Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar and covered presentation skills and CVs, self-esteem and social skills, job interviews and home economics. Classes will continue in November.

New artefacts found at site By Sally Underwood AN archaeologist from Almuñecar has uncovered a couple’s grave at the Monte Velilla dig site. Ivan Sanchez Marcos has been working on the necropolis since the summer alongside University of Granada professor, Andres Adroher Aroux, and municipal archaeologist, Elena Navas. The trio unearthed the grave which also contained an intact ceramic amphora and a burial urn. The group are carrying out a study of three cemeteries in Andalucia; Puente Noy, Monte Velilla and Laurita. The trio from the University of Granada, led by Ivan Sanchez, began work in August with an aim to ‘try to verify archaeological evidence’ from the sites. Earlier this year Mr Sanchez explained, “the works will initially involve georeferencing

THE SITE: Has offered up some treasures. and a topographical survey of the terrain that occupies each of the areas in Puente de Noy, and then we will study Monte Velilla and Laurita.” Once the first stage was finished, a superficial survey was carried out at Monte Velilla and a radar study at Laurita. “The last phase will depend on the results of the previous work and would involve excavating a few tombs and providing an archaeological record. A
fourth stage would involve disseminating what we have learned.” The project is sponsored by four public bodies; the Council of Almuñecar, the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Granada, the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa Tropical and the Bastetana Centre for Archaeology Studies, based in Baza, which is supplying most of the archaeological team.
WORK has begun on a new shopping complex in Motril. Builders have broken ground at the proposed site which will house shops including Decathlon and Mercadona.
More homes AROUND 1,600 new homes may be built along the Costa Tropical near La Herradura after regional laws protecting the coastline were suspended on a technicality. Town halls are now open to build up to the edge of the shore.
Jail time A MAN found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in Motril has been handed a 21-month suspended sentence. The assailant has also been ordered to pay his victim €240 compensation.

TRADE representatives have agreed plans to pedestrianise Velez-Malaga’s centre will boost trade. The president of the Trade Federation of Malaga (FCM), Enrique Gil, and a representative of the Association of Merchants and Professionals of Marbella Old Town, Cristina Lima, a s w e l l a s t h e A s s o c i a t i o n o f M e rchants of Velez-Malaga (ACEV), has endorsed the council’s plans to ban cars from the town’s centre. The group explained the move is “positive because it invites people to go into shops and beautifies the area,” adding it would also help to reduce noise and air pollution. It would simulate tourism, the economy, and our social and cultural spheres as well as promoting the economy, preserving traditions and recognising the work and efforts of our farmers.” The mayor of Velez-Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, acknowledged the region’s vineyards “are increasingly booming,” partly because of the involvement of public bodies and praised the interest of “young people in vines.” Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, a delegate from the Junta de Andalucia also congratulated the council for “promoting the heritage, culture and history of this fruit.” He added that Muscat grape growing employs more than 2,000 farmers, processors and traders, selling 400,000 kilos of grapes each year, more than 100,000 of which are sold in the form of raisins.

The association, The Patient Advocate, announced the SAS has been ordered by a Malaga court to pay out €90,705 after the 78-year-old man’s broken ribs were left undiagnosed. The man had collided with a bus on his moped and was taken by ambulance to the hospital’s emergency department where he was X-rayed. His
fractures went unnoticed and the man was sent home. The next day he went back to hospital and was again diagnosed with pulmonary contusion but not rib fractures. A judge has now found the man’s fractures were visible from his first X-ray but were only picked up after a CT scan when he was found to have several chest injuries. The victim was kept waiting for treatment, however, and he died the following day.

EU loses out on VAT due VAT in Spain has dropped for four successive years and only Sweden and Hungary are more successful in collecting VAT. It is estimated that the total noncollection of VAT across the European Union in 2015 was €152 billion, representing almost 13 per cent of the total VAT due and whilst Greece is getting better at collecting the tax, Italy is the worst, losing €35 billion in the year, although the UK managed to ‘miss out’ on collecting €22.2 billion.

SEPTEMBER proved pretty positive for the GBP/EUR exchange rate, with the pound rallying from a low of €1.07 to hit a 10-week high of €1.14. EUR/GBP, on the other hand, moved from £0.92 to £0.87, while EUR/USD dipped from a high of $1.20 to $1.17. What’s been happening? There’s been a lot going on recently to keep the currency markets occupied. It’s been a busy period for UK politics, with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson causing a stir after reawakening the controversial claim that Brexit will free up £350 million per week to spend on the NHS. Theresa May also delivered a speech on the UK’s approach to Brexit, but markets were disappointed with the lack of clarity it provided. Meanwhile, the US dollar was weakened by political concerns (with military tensions be-

The US Federal Reserve stated that it will start to trim the balance sheet from next month and also indicated that it might raise interest rates one more time during 2017. The month was less upbeat for the euro, with the uncertainty sparked by the outcome of the German Federal Elections leading to a decline in demand for the single currency.
The election saw Angela Merkel retain her majority but lose her coalition partners the Social Democrat Party (SPD), meaning that there could be weeks of negotiations as she tries to form a coalition with minor parties. What do you need to look out for? There’s quite a bit on the calendar with the potential to keep GBP, EUR and USD on their toes over the weeks ahead. For starters, the euro will remain pressured to the downside until a working government is
formed in Germany. If this occurs more quickly than currently forecast, and if the government’s prospects for growth and stability are favourable, EUR exchange rates could bounce back. Of the economic reports due for release, inflation, PMI, growth and retail stats for the UK, Eurozone and US are likely to be the most influential. Any figures which support the case in favour of tighter monetary policy will be supportive for their respective currencies. Speeches from central bank officials are also worth attending to. If the Bank of England (BoE) hints that interest rates might just rise in November, we can expect the pound to gain. Similarly, if the odds of the Federal Reserve increasing interest rates in November remain elevated, the US dollar may continue driving the euro lower. NOW YOU CAN BUY BITCOINS IN CARREFOUR WHEN China recently banned the sale of Bitcoin, the crypto-currency, there was an initial drop in its price which saw a quick recovery and it is now being sold through Carrefour. The initial trial will be run in 50 stores around the country and special Bitcoin cards produced by Bitnovo will be available to purchase so that the Bitcoins can then be downloaded onto a digital wallet for use or investment. This computer produced currency has been long associated with the underworld as it is not a physical currency backed by a government so can be transferred around the world via the internet. It has proven to be a very volatile ‘currency’ with one Bitcoin now being worth just under €3,500 so the purchase of a €100 gift card will allow the owner to download 0.03 of a Bitcoin and then hope that it will retain its value or increase before it needs to be exchanged for goods or physical cash. ber of companies offering debit cards through the VISA system which allow payment for goods and also separate purchase of new Bitcoins. For those who obtained Bitcoins (which are produced by a convoluted system of computer programmes which go ‘mining’ to create new coins), considerable fortunes have been made as the original value of a single Bitcoin was less than €1. As this is a relatively uncontrolled currency, governments in particular
fear that it has become the exchange of choice for drug smugglers, organised crime and even terrorists as well as an ideal way for individuals to evade currency controls. The latest of these computer based currencies the Whoppercoin is being launched by Burger King in Russia, but although in theory it will be possible to trade on the open market, one Whoppercoin is only worth 1.5 euro cents which will be given for every Rouble spent. To purchase a single burger, customers will need to earn 1,700 of the special coins, but if this is successful then the concept may roll out across the whole of Europe with Spain a potential target. Currently, restaurant chains in Spain such as Da Bruno, the Italian family group on the Costa del Sol already offers a loyalty card whereby regular customers can build up points to use against the cost of a meal, with €1 being credited for every €10 spent, so this may not become a huge success in Spain.

ALTHOUGH the Toys ‘R’ Us operation in the USA has sought protection against its creditors after dropping sales, it still sees Spain as a strong and potential market. So confident is it in an the prospective strength of the Iberian market that its new five-year plan calls for continued expansion as well as a redesign of the online business. With 51 stores in Spain and a new one due to open prior to the Christmas and Three Kings rush, the company will also be taking on more than 1,000 part-time staff in order to be able to cope with the expected business. According to new general director of the company Jean Charreteur, responsible for France and Iberia in an interview with the news agency Efe, whilst Spain is not the largest European market in turnover, it does generate profit and there appears to be a significant option for long-term growth.

Whilst the company has been seriously hit by the internet sales made through Amazon in the USA, the online giant has not made significant inroads within the Spanish market with El Corte Ingles being the major toy seller, followed closely by Toys ‘R’ Us. For this reason, the company plans to expand its number of outlets in smaller towns but only if the potential stores are in the right locations and promise to generate significant footfall. Having seen the success of internet sites worldwide, the group plans to make its site far easier to operate and
to introduce the option for customers to order online but then collect at a designated store or even have the manufacturer deliver directly. Funds are apparently being made available to allow for this growth and there will be an emphasis in promoting the little known Babes ‘R’ Us business which like Mothercare in the UK and Spain offers a range of items ideal for newborns. One other possibility being considered, once the new website is up and running efficiently, is the possible introduction of third party companies offering their product for sale with the group receiving a percentage of the sale in the same way as Amazon and other similar online stores. Although there is a strong emphasis on new stores and an improved internet facility, money will also be spent on upgrading the existing stores as well as adding special events to ensure that customers visit on a regular basis and that each store is of the same high standard.

THERE are some significant savings to be made by choosing one supermarket over another with the average basket being €900 per annum cheaper if you pick the right chain. There seem to be two deciding factors over the pricing of goods, location and store with the Alcampo chain being the most economic on a national basis although the Dani group in Andalucia is considered as being cheaper. The consumer organisation OCU has completed its annual survey of Spanish supermarkets and compared 164,276 prices in 1,137 establishments in 63 different locations to allow it to come up with its cheapest options. Mallorcan supermarkets were the most expensive, but the majority of the different chains offer similar prices although fruit and vegetable prices have increased generally.

MANY UK expatriates living in Spain own properties in the UK and have pensions and investments in the UK. They rely on their UK assets to maintain their lifestyles (and those of their families) in Spain. If they can no longer manage their affairs in the UK due to a loss of mental capacity, it can cause many difficulties.
You can choose a person or people, who you trust, to act for you when you are no longer able. The best way to avoid the legal and practical difficulties that can occur with the loss of mental capacity is to plan for it in advance by drawing up a document called a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ (‘LPA’).
An LPA must be made while you have full mental capacity.
What is an LPA? An LPA is a legal document that enables you to appoint one or more attor-
neys to act for you when you are no longer able to act for yourself. Your attorney can be a professional,
such as a solicitor or a family member or friend. There are two types of LPA: ‘Health and Welfare’ or ‘Property and Financial Affairs’ An LPA must be made while you have full mental capacity. It is therefore important to make one while you are in good health. Why should you get an LPA? You can choose a person or people, who you trust, to act for you when you are no longer able. If you lose your mental capacity and do not have an LPA, then your family (or the authorities) will have no choice but to make an application to the Court of Protection to appoint a ‘deputy’ to look after your affairs, which can be time consuming and costly. Will my LPA be recognised in Spain? Unfortunately there is no international type of LPA which is guaranteed to work in both the UK and Spain. The advice we give to our clients at Stone King, is that if you have assets in both Spain and the UK, your only safe option is to appoint attorneys in both jurisdictions.

You will not be aware of it, but this was a realisation of my dream back in the 60’s when, much to my chagrin, my aspirations toward Guru’ism fell on totally deaf ears. Thank you, all my children. Right, on to more important issues. This year, or hopefully next, I have decided to enter for the Father of the Year awards. When the time comes, I hope, when you hear of all the wonderful surprises I have lined up, you will have no hesitation in voting me a clear winner and new occupant of a beautiful house in the centre of London, which unfortunately 99.9 per cent of you will never see the inside of. Rest assured though, Diana and I will be very happy there and, although a little decadent, no more or less than we deserve after all the years of hypocrisy and planning it has taken to realise our dreams. After all, who wants to kill and maim millions of fellow human beings? Next, if you don’t feel the need to work, I will supply you with enough money to keep you in food, fags and beer and, particularly if you have large numbers of children, enough money to live the life of Riley and even spend some constructive leisure time in the betting shops. If your friends from countries across the world want to come here for extended sleep overs, I will make sure they have enough money and free hand outs to stay as long as they like, even if many of them would like you all dead or serving a different cultural existence altogether. Every worker’s wage will go up and, when I take over all the public transport companies, travel will be cheap and even free for everyone. How is your old Dad going to pay for all these goodies I hear you ask? Well it really is quite simple. After I’ve finished robbing all those rich b******s, I’ll simply borrow the rest. When it all goes pear shaped I’ll then do what we have always done, let those we hate the most pick up all the pieces. No problem. So, there you have it. Lost deposits may be recoverable TIME is running out for those who lost deposits when construction companies went bust but there is still time to reclaim hundreds of thousands of euros. In a number of circumstances, it is perfectly possible to obtain a refund of what you have lost thanks to a ruling by the Spanish government and the involvement of a savvy group of lawyers and advisors. Now, through his company Off Plan Property Deposit Refunds (OPP) based in the Costa del Sol, Sheldon Grossmith who suffered this very problem and his Spanish associates are offering expatriates and Spaniards the opportunity to recover their funds, even if, as is often the case, they were lost 10 years ago. The answer is very simple and that is that the banks with whom the original deposit was lodged could well be responsible in law for the refund of the monies lost , p r o v i d e d t h ey d id n ’t in s is t th a t mon i e s l o d g e d we re c o v e re d b y b a n k guarantees, separate insurance policies or in escrow accounts. Almost none of the money lost was ever in a ‘safe haven’ and this is where OPP can assist, but time is running out as any claim has to be made within 15 years of

A number of claims have already been settled by the banks after losing cases in the courts and a smaller percentage have been settled out of court where speedy payment is required. OPP will make a charge for putting this together, but purely on a no win, no fee basis! Those who have suffered a loss are
invited to contact Sheldon with a copy of the original purchase contract and proof of payment (as well as where it was paid to). A decision as to whether there is a viable case to prosecute can be made very quickly and if the decision is positive then it is intended that there will be a threeway agreement, signed between the person losing the money, OPP and the lawyer who will undertake the case. Once they proceed, it is likely that it
will take 12 to 18 months to obtain a final court ruling and in the event of the Judge m aki ng an awar d t o t he per son whose money has been taken, there will be a 15 per cent charge (plus IVA) from OPP and the lawyers will keep any interest that has been awarded by the court. Should the case be unsuccessful, then no costs are charged to the client. OPP was formed at the beginning of 2016 and Sheldon has been a regular guest of the Sky Property TV Channel explaining the concept and currently the group is involved in 150 cases all of which are expected to be successful. I’M used to seeing signs on doors as I go into buildings. You know, the usual stuff, the type that has a picture on it with a red line through it. Ciggys, obviously, in all buildings or maybe one with a dog on it. In Spain you will see the odd one, in a posher restaurant, that no flip flops are allowed. You get the idea. So I was a little taken aback, when going into a medical research building, that the only sign they had on the door, apart from the opening hours, was a picture of a gun with a red line going through it! Now to me that’s not the greatest deterrent to a raving lunatic that wants to kill a load of people. What do they think is going to happen? Some nutter is going to go marching up to the door with his mate and a couple of AK47s and just as he is going to go crashing through the doors he’ll say, ‘Woah hold up son we can’t go in there and massacre everybody.’ ‘Why not?’ says his mate. ‘Well there’s a sign on the
door that says ‘No Guns.’ ‘Oh ok then let’s find somewhere else.’ Everyone will be saved by health and safety and a $2 sign. ‘What is the point?’ I asked the receptionist when I went in. She didn’t even know it was on there but said it was their policy that guns were not allowed in the building. I should bloody well hope so. I love America, but at the moment, the place is a mess. In years I have never spoken to so many people with such opposite views on the state of their country. A few I spoke to love Trump but as much as they love him they want him to stop tweeting. They love him because he’s not a politician but I spoke to a lot more who, like me, think he is a snake oil salesman that is very dangerous. I also think he can’t make any statement about anything without putting his twisted views on everything and blaming media for fake news. Calling football players ‘mother’s bitches’ for instance or sending 18 tweets on Saturday, all of which were negative, defensive or dark and all re Puerto Rica. This is why the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and Dieter Liebrech Koch, with the collaboration of RACC and RACE and other European automobile clubs, are launching the #ParkYourPhone initiative. The ambassador for this campaign is singer Pharrell Williams. European Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc said that “with smartphones integrated into our lives, it seems increasingly difficult to take our eyes off the screen. In fact, driving distracted is causing an increasing number of victims on the road.” The message is unmistakable: the best way to prevent an accident is, first and foremost, to have our eyes on the road and not any other element that can prevent us from driving with attention. Jean Todt, president of the FIA, said that “road safety is one of my top priorities. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians need to un-
derstand the dangers of using smartphones in traffic. To combat the 3,500 lives lost daily in traffic accidents, I call on all road users to ‘park’ their phones when they are in traffic.” RACC Recommendations The RACC emphasises that talking on the phone multiplies by four the probability of an accident and drivers who write a message are 23 times more likely to crash. In a study carried out by the Catalan motor club last year, 26 per cent of drivers admitted to using their mobile ‘always or often’ on their journeys, a percentage that increases to 47 per cent in the case of pedestrians. To reduce the accidents related to mobile use, the RACC recommends: Promote the use of applications that block the mobile while driving; require certification (eg an ISO standard) to be able to standardise mobility-related apps and identify them as safe and compatible with driving.

Is the UK licence invalid? With respect, you are giving the wrong advice regarding UK driving licences. First, there is no such thing as an EU driving licence. OCTOBER 1, the day of the illegal Cataluña referendum, was abbreviated by the Spanish media to l-0. This looked like a football score with a victory for the home team. That is how Carles Puigdemont and his separatist supporters still see it, although Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, the Spanish vice-president insisted that the match never happened. “There was no referendum,” pronounced the woman routinely called on to do Mariano Rajoy’s dirty work. On the contrary there was a referendum albeit with only a 42 per cent turnout. Ninety per cent of the people who voted, those happy to participate in a ballot with no legal guarantees, voted for independence.

Game over The regional president Carles Puigdemont interprets this as a mandate to declare independence within days, even though the ‘yes’ vote represents only 27 per cent of Cataluña’s population. So not only has he split Spain apart but he is going to divide Cataluña as well.
The pyromaniac THE Spanish government failed to understand that not all of the Catalans who wanted a referendum, wanted secession. Thousands of police and Guardia Civil officers were seconded to the region to stop them from voting and the more Rajoy used words like ‘sedition,’ the more he fuelled the referendum fire. Not for nothing was he compared to a pyromaniac by a Catalan Euro-MP on October 1. That fire will take a long time to extinguish. Spain and the world saw footage of black-clad National Police and Guardia Civil officers, armoured literally up to the eyeballs manhan-

The days have gone when Mariano Rajoy could lie back and think of Spain in tricky situations. The government’s inability to parley and their inflexibility conveyed obduracy and fear, not strength and now no-one is happy. Not the Catalans and certainly not both governments who must pick up the pieces. How they will put them together is anyone’s guess.

Be prepared JP MORGAN advised investors that Spanish bonds are no longer a sure bet, thanks to Cataluña. Instead they should choose Germany, which is logical, or Portugal owing to Spain’s ‘constitutional crisis.’ The latter option was nothing short of humiliating as along with Italy, Greece and Spain, Portugal was one of the PIGS in the doodoo during the economic crisis. Mariano Rajoy who repeatedly pats himself on the back for dragging Spain out of the economic crisis criticised his predecessor Jose Luis Rodriguez for failing to see it coming. And now Rajoy, who didn’t see the Catalan car crash coming or take seriously its effects on the economy, has created more problems with his habitual passive-aggressive response. It was good black humour, another of Spain’s inventions along with the helicopter and the submarine. Especially as few were sure then and still fewer are sure now who is a-creeping up on who.

no matter where it is in the world, with three-metre accuracy. Magic or what? And it’s idiot-proof, promise. If you can use a smartphone you can use what3words. Technophiles will of course sneer and insist we all delve into the bowels of our satnav devices to work out complicated GPS coordinates, and good luck getting many pensioners, and in reality the majority of non-Millennials to go that route. So take up thy smartphone, download the free app from the Apple Store (for iPhones and iPads) or Google Play (for Android devices) by searching for what3words, (or on your computer head to what3words.com), and start by finding out just which three words could get a stalker delivered directly to your front door. It’s a brilliant solution for the technically timid which is now expanding beyond the 40,000 words of English it needs to cover the globe. There’s now a Spanish version, and others. What3words is stunning in its simplicity and a boon to everyone except, perhaps, dyslexics. But hey, there are apps for that too. Watch this space…

WE use artificial intelligence (AI) when we make a search on the internet or use robots like Amazon’s ‘Alexa.’ It is not new technology and was foreseen by science fiction writers long ago. It appeared in the film 2001 Space Odyssey in which the space ship’s computer takes command. The question in 2017 is; ‘is the computer going to take over earth?’ Not such an outlandish question I suggest. If you accept the definition of AI as - ‘a programme capable of replicating itself’ - such programmes are here now. If you watch the videos on ‘lethal autonomous weapons’ on YouTube, you will be aware of one of the directions AI has taken. In Isaac Asimov’s ‘Three Laws of Robotics’ the preservation of the humans is paramount. So are similar inhibiting commands being adopted by those programming robots now? I think back to the story of Genesis and the account where a creator God has trouble with some angels, in particular one called ‘Satan.’ This angel sees an opening where he might become more powerful than his creator. Fortunately, by definition, God is all powerful and Satan and his followers are banished. By changing the word ‘angel’ or ‘deity’ for ‘programme’ you can see that the story is cruelly topical. Are we creating robots which will become powerful minor deities, capable of destroying towns with one burst from their weapons? There is another modern myth in which earth is attacked by aliens who intend to destroy humanity. Personally I would like to challenge this myth. Firstly I do not see what aliens have to gain and secondly warrior robots may destroy humanity first. TV Couch Critic IN this new column a panel of TV critics give their thoughts on personally selected weekly programmes. Here is what has entertained... and annoyed... the first of the four regular viewers who will be saying what they think! There can be only one starting point: the amazing Dr Foster. Suranne Jones has been fantastic, and has come a long way from Weatherfield, via Scott & Bailey and Bertie Carvel, showing that cheating ex-husbands can be sexy and dangerous in equal measure when they are over 40. The good Doctor took some extreme action to sort out her life and whilst it is good there are reports of a possible third series, please, would someone buy Suranne some decent lingerie and get her to a hair stylist. Hubby Simon should not be claiming the sexy crown, but is, and in my book the Doctor ’s shocking black underwear has to go in any future series. Meanwhile Coronation Street has been showing six times a week recently and two story lines look as

Dr Foster is great, but oh what shocking underwear though they will play out as the autumn nights draw in. Phelan continues to hold poor Andy hostage and it looks as though he will be captive for quite a while longer. But frankly do I really care? Also, the marvellous Billy Mayhew is rumoured to have a very busy time leading up to Christmas and not just with sorting out the donkey for St Mary’s nativity play. Watch out for a ‘not really suit-
able for a vicar’ storyline, for this is as good a reason as any to keep watching. Sunday evenings of late have been dominated by Victoria, the fabulous The Child in Time and additionally Dragons’ Den. But the crown (excuse the pun) clearly goes to Victoria, with Dame Diana Rigg a marvel playing the Duchess of Buccleuch, Victoria’s new Mistress of the Robes; arriving to her Court via Game of Thrones.

This dame is everything Maggie Smith just didn’t pull out of the bag in Downton Abbey. Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes are wonderfully cast as in-love Monarch and Consort, Victoria and Albert. There is also an off-screen romance between them and while this may have boosted ratings, I’m worried that in real life Tom’s hair is way too floppy for someone who has time-travelled with Dr Who.
Plus once those viewing numbers go high enough, Jenna will run amok with the kitchen scissors, so grab a decent hat Tom. W1A recently returned for a third series. For readers not familiar with this ‘comedy for anyone who has worked in an office’ - my words, not the show tagline - it is a six episode, how to be politically correct and achieve very little, comedy starring Jessica Hynes, Sarah Parish and Hugh Bonnerville. Hugh (Ian Fletcher in the show) is the BBC’s Head of Values, so you can see where this is going, given his job is said to be to reshape what the Beeb is all about. Be ready for lots of ‘I agree’ in meetings and behaviour which will resonate if you love Buzz Word Bingo in the office. It’s worth a look for the starstudded cast even for those who have not worked in an office. Finally, if you haven’t caught the re-run of Sun, Sea and A&E series three, its worth searching it out. The cameras follow British holidaymakers who have, on the whole, terrible flip-flops and way too little sun cream. It’s a must. Critique: AWL, Casares, Costa del Sol.

We are none the wiser on the specific details as there was nothing in the speech which was not already common knowledge. She said that EU citizens would always be welcome in the UK but they would have to ‘register,’ again no specific details, nor the implications for British citizens in the EU which will be determined by the EU, not Britain. A toxic truth By Kat Ashton WHEN it comes to anti-pollution beauty products, the European market is still far behind the scope of products offered in other regions such as Asia and the US. Despite the European governments’ steps to warn citizens of the dangers of pollution, the health and beauty industry has been slow to put out new products which actively help to protect the skin against toxins in the air. Although Europeans generally enjoy better air quality than poorer countries, pollution is still at the back of many people’s minds. Almost 50 per cent of Spanish consumers claim they would like to learn more about how to protect themselves from contamination according to new research from Mintel, yet there are limited products on the market that offer to do so. The data also reveals that anti-pollution products only accounted for 1.3 per cent of all European beauty and personal care launches in 2016, compared to 1.7 per cent in Asia Pacific. As brands used to struggle

UK-BASED charity, March for Men, has been organising fundraising walks across the UK raising money for Prostate Cancer UK and now Spain has got in on the action too. A group of local health care workers have put together the Mediterranean March for Men on Saturday to increase awareness about prostate cancer and to provide the opportunity for people to support the charity from their current location.
The event’s organisers invite everyone to ‘put your boots on’ and join in with either a three kilometre or 10 kilometre walk from 10am, setting off from the Centro Mar y Salud on Paseo Maritimo, 4 in El Morche. The group walking three kilometres will turn around by the first picnic tables along the gravelled coastal path, and the 10 kilometre group will turn around as they reach Mezquitilla and the end of the gravelled coastal path.
Refreshments will be available during the walk and at the return to base. A study from Century 21 Spain found that property players aged over 60 are the main drivers of the real estate recovery seen in the country’s largest cities. Century 21 is the world’s largest real estate franchise, with 800 professionals working in Spain. Their comprehensive analysis found that those aged over 60 are the biggest beneficiaries now that the financial crisis has passed.

An incredible three out of every four home transactions, including both purchases and sales, carried out today in Spain are by people aged between 60 and 70. The vast majority are sales, reflecting the ‘empty nest’ phenomenon which sees older couples downgrade in size after their children leave home. Homes offered for sale by seniors are typically at least 100 square metres and have three to four bedrooms. They are in the plusher neighbourhoods and suburbs

of cities like Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Well connected by public transport, and close to local schools, these homes have an average selling price of above €225,000. Once their large city home is sold, older couples typically decided to move to properties of around 70 square metres, close to their children or grand-children. They buy apartments, often near the coast, which cost between €100,000 and €200,000. Key perks they are after include proximity to shopping centres and hospitals, and having lifts if it is an apartment building. Many are prepared to rent rather than buy, with an average budget of between €400 and €600 per month. Many are also expatriates. British, German and Scandinavian buyers aged over 60 are most active in the marketplace. They have slightly finer tastes than their Spanish counterparts, seeking exclusively coastal properties with three or four bedrooms.

SEVEN in 10 young Spaniards expect to own property by the age of 35. But it’s not very likely to happen. A report on the profile of the Spanish homeowner found that the percentage of people aged between 25 and 35 who own a home is at its lowest in a decade. The under-35 age range isn’t even the largest group of potential first time buyers. Mo r e p e o p l e in th e 3 5 -4 5 bracket are now looking for their first home. “Young people are moving away from home ownership because salaries are stagnant and because financial institutions are focused only on attracting pru-

Wealthier buyers who do not need financing are accounting for a larger share of the market, as young people shift into rental mode. Today just 17 per cent of Spaniards can afford a budget of €150,000, compared to 37 per cent in 2013. T h ere h a s , how e ve r, be e n a n in-
crease in the number of people willing to spend more than €300,000. This suggests a growing inequality in purchasing power. That’s bad news for the 72 per cent of under 30s who said they expect to own a home by age 35 in a Uniplaces poll. Youngsters are entirely unrealistic. Six in 10 expect to have to pay a minimum of €200,000 and have substantial savings for a deposit.
HOUSE prices are predicted to increase by 7.3 per cent in a new report from Solvia. An analysis of Spain’s annual property cycles from 2016-2020 projects annual increases of between 2 and 3 per cent. The estimate falls in line with most forecasts. Spanish property prices will rise steadily in the medium term, with growth expected to slow down in the new decade. This will allow other important market factors, including construction and sales volume, to catch up. While the whole count r y wi l l see a pr i ce i ncr ease of ar ound 7 per cent by 2020, in Madrid and Barcelona prices will rocket by 13 and 14 per cent respectively. Gr owt h wi l l al so be stronger than average on the Balearic and Canary
Islands, fuelled by sunseeking foreigners. Spain’s Mediterranean arc will also perform well. Prices in many interior regions may not rise at all, meaning Spain’s famed ‘two-tier’ recovery will become even more pronounced. Places like Extremadura have unfavourable demographics and may soon be full of ghost towns as people move for work. As price increases slow down, Spain’s property recovery is expected to consolidate itself in the form of more transactions. The number of transactions has shot up by 50 per cent since the lows of 2013, reaching more than 450,000 last year. Sales are projected to grow by 8-10 per cent annually until 2020, eventually surpassing the 750,000 mark.

Fan palms are very fast growing but require little maintenance as they hold on to spent leaves; so provide few problems in the pool or garden from constant small falling debris. They may need specialised care once they become very tall to prune the spent leaves, but it is usually only an annual or biannual event in a domestic garden.

weather is a bit cooler as it is heavy work and causes unnecessary strain under the hot sun. A sunny, well-drained patch of the garden is the best place to start building and if you have a slope of a mount this is even better as it will give your garden an ‘au-natural’ appearance. The best types of rocks to us e te nd to be volc a nic rock, sandstone and granite. While some people prefer natural shaped rocks, cut blocks can also create intere s ting dime ns ions in the garden. Always make sure you handle the rocks carefully and enlist the help of friends or a wheelbarrow if the rocks are particularly heavy. Plants that grow well in rockeries are those that are happy in dry conditions, such as cacti, bulbs, succulents and flowering plants. Mosses and lichens that grow on rocks also provide an extra layer of colour and dimension.

rarely fall over even in very high winds due to its structure that gives it much greater strength than other trees. Both palms are drought-tolerant but the Californian one is more so. It will tolerate even desert conditions so no watering is necessary once established, but it is less tolerant of humid conditions. The Mexican one will survive better in places with higher rainfall or around the edges of natural ponds where there is a lot of ground water and it tolerates humidity better. Fertilising is not generally recommended unless your soil is very low in nutrients or if you wish to make the palm grow very fast as they require only a minimum of nutrients to grow well. To establish you can use soluble fertilisers applied
when watering to ensure they are well established during their first summer. They can both be grown in strong containers on your terrace or balcony using an ordinary potting mixture but they will need some watering over summer, as the soil can dry out quickly in a container. They should not be watered over winter, unless they receive no rainfall and the soil mix becomes too dry. The invasive palm beetle that has devastated the unprotected Canary Island palms does not seem to bother the Washingtonia so much. It may be worth checking with your local agricultural office on the current procedures for protecting palms in your region if you wish to grow some palms in your garden.
Luscious lilies By Kat Ashton LILY OF THE VALLEY is a favourite for many gardeners - grown for its scented flowers and ability to thrive in shady patches of the garden. The plant is known for its petite, white, bell-shaped flowers which hang from a stalk and its potent fragrance which has inspired many perfumes. They are easy to grow under most conditions but work particularly well when planted along a path or in raised containers so you can appreciate the fragrance. Once established, Lily of the Valley forms large patches that require little care and can last for many years. It is also incredibly easy to grow the plant indoors and they continue to bloom in winter when most other plants have stopped flowering. Planting them in three week intervals will ensure you get a fragrant display throughout the colder months with minimal work required. To grow the flowers indoors, you just have to pick out a container at least three inches deep and make sure to soak the ‘pips’ in warm water before planting. After leaving them to swell for a couple of hours, snip off the tips by about 1/2 inch to encourage the growing

THE FEMALE: Bitches are more affectionate and easier to control than the male dog. They are roughly 30 per cent smaller and, whatever their breed, tend to be gentler with children. The bitch will come into season about every six months and this will last for around three weeks. The female is receptive to mating and extremely attractive to dogs that will instinctively try to mate with her. A good clear sign that a bitch is coming into ‘season’ is that she will produce a discharge; initially a blood stain, that will be deposited wherever she sits or lays. She will spend a great
deal of time licking her vagina. Be assured that your home will attract the local male dogs that will camp outside your home for about three weeks. Expect howling throughout the night to attract her attention. The female will attempt to escape at the first possible opportunity so it is wise to keep all doors closed and secure, especially when greeting your guests. I have known bitches that have chewed their way through doors during the night to get to the male dogs. Do not underestimate the great heights that male dogs can climb and jump to reach a bitch on heat. During this period it is well-known that the male dog can be extremely aggressive and may well attack you if you try to send him away. If you are not going to breed from your bitch it is best to consider having her neutered a few months before her first season. Veterinary Colleges have endless scientific proof that the female will live longer and the likelihood of mammary tumours is negligible. She will certainly not put on weight. THE MALE: Male dogs, whatever their breed,

The adult male has an instinctive urge to escape and wander free from home for periods ranging from an hour to several days or weeks. Often a clear sign of a dominant male, although house-trained, will show when he starts to lift his leg in the house and urinate on walls and furniture. He does this to scent-mark his territory and to affirm his domi-
nant status. This type of dog should be castrated. Owners of dominant dogs should spend time reinforcing their own dominance and insisting on absolute obedience. This can be achieved through a training club where you can learn how to control the dominant male when he meets another dominant male dog. Dogs that are confined and not al-
lowed to roam can develop sexual frustration and will mount the human leg and even mount children who crawl on the floor. This is intolerable and very dangerous to a child. The best way to deal with this is to discuss the problem in an honest way with the vet who might consider either using a female hormone to try to counteract the condition or to castrate the dog. I personally recommend castration for all dogs that are not to be used for breeding purposes. A castrated dog is happy and free from worry and frustration. He will be more pleasant to have around, less likely to fight other males and more submissive to the wishes of the human pack leader. By having a dog castrated in no way alters any other instincts. He will guard, hunt, work, and retrieve. The best time to castrate a male dog is around five to six months before he starts to lift his leg. Your vet will advise when your dog is suitable for this minor operation. Within 24 hours your dog will have fully recovered from the operation.

Lorry cartel smashed A VOLKSWAGEN-owned lorry firm was fined almost €1 billion for price fixing. Scania is on the verge of bankruptcy after being slapped with the €880 penalty by the European Commission. Judges found that Scania and five subsidiaries of Daimler, Iveco, Volvo, Renault and MAN, conspired for almost 20 years to fix lorry prices. They also worked together to avoid paying for expensive emissions-reducing technology. The five other companies admitted fault and settled with the commission. But Scania protested its innocence and was punished by judges. Fines totalling €3.8 billion have been imposed on the cartel, with Daimler alone being hit with a €1 billion penalty.

Classic Car Club of Andalucia
The CCCA: What next? Motoring correspondent Ian Giles reports on the latest news from the Andalucia Classic Car Club, the most successful such society in the area and probably in Spain with over 600 members. FTER a hugely busy September and numerous events and car runs to celebrate nine busy years, the club presses on unabated with its programme of events for the autumn and winter. Next on the agenda is the October Club night and dinner at El Chaparral. This will have just taken place by the time you read this but the October classic car run and lunch will be happening this Saturday, October 7. The Run will be organised by Club Presidente, Ian Giles, ably assisted by Richard Masters. An interesting route is promised but details will not, as usual, be released until participants collect their Roadbooks at the start and after a decent breakfast. I can tell you that the finish will be at Venta Los Almendros, just above San Pedro on the Ronda road. Cars will start arriving from around 2.30pm for a welcome drink and then crews will enjoy a good lunch while the cars recover, parked outside.

Non members are welcome to come along to see the cars and chat to members. Lunch for visitors will also be available at reduced rates for those that might like to stay on.
Christmas and the winter ALTHOUGH November events are yet to be planned, as is the special Christmas classic car run and lunch on December 9, I can tell you that there will be a fabulous Christmas Party at La Sala in Puerto Banus on Tuesday, December 12. Formula 1 NOT entirely classic cars, but nearly all classic car enthusiasts are most interested in motor racing, especially F1. If you are a fan or follower of the current F1 season you will know that Britain’s Lewis Hamilton now leads the World Championship ahead of Germany’s Sebastian Vettel. Holland’s young rising superstar, Max Verstappen, has just won the Malaysian GP for Red Bull as I write this. You might be interested to know that the CCCA has numerous luminaries from the world of motor-sport amongst it’s members and Honorary lifetime member, former McLaren F1 team boss, Jo Ramirez, is a regular participant in all forms of CCCA Club events and is a passionate classic car enthusiast himself. He has just returned from the Singapore GP and, later this month, heads off for the Mexican GP where he is an ambassador for the race. Not only that, he is a very fine, and much cherished, ambassador for the classic Car Club of Andalucia! You can always find information on what is happening with this vibrant and active classic car club by taking a look at the website, www.cccandalucia.com. Non-members are welcome to attend the Club’s monthly dinners at El Chaparral Golf Club which are held, without fail, on the first Tuesday of every month. However, to participate in the numerous four-wheel activities, full membership is required. That’s it from me for now, more in two weeks time.
The next long classic car event THE Club’s next bigger, and longer, event is the six-day Tour D’Extremadura starting later this month. A full entry of 30 cars, 60 people, has been received and the participants are in for a real treat! Some spectacular scenery, amazing, traffic free roads and beautiful, Parador hotels along with some superb dinners including one ‘Black-Tie’ gala night. This event is put on in the style of the longer European events of the 1950’s and early 1960’s before timing became everything. There is still some emphasis on the challenge of navigation but none of that is taken too seriously and there are no time pressures or Time Controls. More important to most crews is where they are staying the night, what is on the menu for dinner, particularly what is on the wine list, and where the route will take them. All great fun and always these events produce a marvellous entry of like-minded hedonists itching to get out and explore Andalucia in their fine motor cars. I can’t think of a better way of spending a week in Spain! Not only is there a full entry for this spectacular event, but two crews are joining in from the Jaguar Enthusiasts and a number of members are coming especially from the UK, Ireland, Holland and even from Texas in the good ole US of A. A splendid party is in the making!

England top the six-team Group F table, with 20 points from eight games going into the game against Slovenia, having been held to a goalless draw when the teams last met. Hart, on loan at West Ham from Manchester City, said of his club future: “I was in Italy all last season. I love being at West Ham and I’m grateful. “I’ve got until the end of May here - my concentration and focus is on doing my best.” Hart has been criticised for his errors in recent seasons for both club and country - but Southgate has stood by him. “When Joe is calm and composed he’s at his best - it’s something we’ve discussed,” said Southgate, who replaced sacked Sam Allardyce as national manager. Rooney, who rejoined Everton from Manchester United in the summer, was arrested by police for drink-driving after driving Laura Simpson home in her VW Beetle after a night out in a Cheshire bar. An incident that occurred while his wife Coleen, pregnant with their fourth
child, was on holiday in Mallorca. Rooney, reportedly earning £150,000-a-week, pleaded guilty to drink driving and was given a two year ban, and a 100 hours Community Service Order. Rooney was in the driving seat, so to speak, when looking at the tail-end of his career, in his decision to hang up his international boots after winning over 100 caps to concentrate on club games. Wales may rue Bale loss AFTER reporting to the Welsh training camp, prior to vital World Cup qualifying matches, Gareth Bale was declared unfit by the Welsh FA medical team. This is a major blow for the Welsh Squad and manager Chris Coleman as the next two matches are against Georgia (tomorrow) and more importantly the Republic of Ireland (next Monday) who sit just one point behind Wales. It appears that group leaders Serbia are most likely to secure the automatic qualification to the World Cup finals, but the runners up may
well get through to a second round play-off and Bales presence in the team could have made the difference between winning and losing. Having returned to the Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, the team doctors have checked Bale out and said that he has a swelling but no tear in his left leg which was caused by an injury picked up during the Champions League victory at Borussia Dortmund. Rather than a month or more, it is now believed that with careful monitoring, he will only be out of action for 10 to 15 days.

Fumbling start for the boquerones MALAGA CF hopes to grab their first victory of the season in their home fixture this weekend. The Andalucian side has struggled to get out of the starting blocks, gaining just one point out of seven games played and has been plagued with injuries. Five players, Borja Baston, Cifu, Cenk, Luis Hernandez and Diego Gonzalez are still injured and will miss out the Sunday fixture against Leganes. The Madrid side sits 13 places above Malaga, who are bottom of the table, with 11 points. However a win could see them leapfrog Alaves and could be the boost they need. Malaga’s signings have yet to perform, with
wingers Keko and Jony providing only two goals and four assists since joining the side in July 2016. Jony provided his only assist for the team on his debut and has not reached that level of performance in his other 26 games for the side. After Malaga’s 2-0 derby defeat against Sevilla, former captain Duda said it “hurt to see Malaga like this,” but believed the club had “been through worse and come out the other end.” For him things will look up “once all the players are available to play and the ball starts to go in the goal,” and believes it will only take one win to turn things around at La Rosaleda.
