The European Commission said in a statement that Spain is “losing the battle” against the bug that is “officially out of control” after the number of cases in Mallorca rose to 156. The disease which has been dubbed olive Ebola was previ-

ously confined to Guadalest, where emergency action has been taken, but it has now spread to 26 almond orchards in Balls and Alcanali. It has had a devastating effect on almond trees and has wiped out more than a million olive trees in Italy and the Balearic Islands in recent years, but these new cases represent only the second record on mainland Spain. Insecticide will now be applied to everything within 100

metres of the newly-infected trees in the hope of destroying vectors carrying the disease, before the trees themselves are destroyed. Regional Environmental councillor Elena Cebrian met with the mayors of the affected villages in order to try and calm local growers, but she also confirmed that biologists have not as yet identified which insect species is carrying the deadly disease to new areas.

Girl lost and found SCARLETT, an eight-year-old British girl who disappeared in Albir was found unscathed the following morning. She vanished while she was having dinner late at night with her mother and brother. An hour later at 2.30am, when the mother was unable to find the girl, she contacted the Guardia Civil. Four patrols sent out from Altea’s Guardia Civil post and the force’s USECIC public safety unit scoured the area without success throughout the night. They finally located her at 8am in a pub next door to where the family had been eating. Guard Civil sources said that she had probably fallen asleep and remained there unseen when the restaurant had closed for night. On waking she put the television on and it was this that drew the officers’ attention as they went past the shuttered pub.

Ferreting around SAN VICENTE firemen rescued a ferret from drowning in a Muchamiel irrigation water deposit. They were alerted after a resident saw it fall into the deposit while chasing a duck. Firefighters found the ferret clinging to a floating container but after they removed it with a long-handled pool-cleaning net it fled and disappeared from sight.

Murder family shuts business down THE Sala family, whose matriarch Mari Carmen Martinez was murdered last December, have closed their Novocar car showroom. Mari Carmen was the widow of Vicente Sala, a former president of the now-defunct CAM bank. After his death she headed the family’s business interests, assisted by her son Vicente, but was allegedly at loggerheads with her daughters by the time she died. She was shot at point blank range while inside her vehicle at the Novocar salesroom and her son-in-law Miguel Lopez was arrested and charged with her murder. After

some months on remand, he was later released on bail. Lopez was in charge of both Novocar as well as the Solmar car-hire firm and despite falling profits, had increased his pay from an annual €45,000 to €99,999 in 2015. Both companies had run at a loss since 2013 and it was known that Mari Carmen had discussed winding up the companies before she was killed. The wealthy family, which also owns lucrative chemical firms, has sold its remaining vehicles to a leading Alicante Province dealer. Solmar, not yet extinguished, is practically inoperative.

Although the festival only officially started six years ago, the buzz around the weeklong celebration has grown year-on-year, making it the LGBT community’s fourth largest celebration in the country. This year, the city even announced its candidacy to be the host of Europride in 2020. Themed parties, concerts at sunset and high heel races are just some of the activities included in the official programme, which runs from September 4 - 10. Staff from the Mobility Council also changed several lenses in pedestrian traffic lights to depict two men or women kissing, with the intention of increasing the number of these samesex traffic lights in the future.

He claims he is the result of a night of passion and has a sample of the singer’s DNA, scavenged from rubbish left outside his Miami home, to prove it. Santos first went to court 25 years ago, claiming that Iglesias was his father. On this oc-

casion the crooner refused to undergo tests, prompting a Valencia judge to rule in 1992 that his reluctance was proof that he had fathered Santos. Clean-up for Roman baths LAND at Villajoyosa’s Roman baths was cleared of weeds and litter during routine cleaning of municipal plots. The work, which was carried out by specialised operatives, included the Barberes Sur Roman villa, said Pedro Alemany, La Vila’s Environment councillor. The baths in Calle Canalejas in the centre of Villajoyosa were discovered in 2006 and the extensive site points to the importance of the town, which was then called Allon and was the fourth-most important in Alicante Province. Excavations have revealed that the baths, built in the first century AD and in use until the fourth, possessed a swimming pool and what archaeologists believe was a bar. “The Environment department keeps La Vila’s land and

THE regional Education department skirted the courts’ suspension of its plurilingual teaching programme with a parliamentary decree. Pressure group comments on Brexit AS the third round of talks took place between British and European Union Brexit negotiators in Brussels, campaigning groups made their voices heard. British in Europe, an umbrella body lobbying for citizen’s rights includes Bremain in Spain which looks to try to protect British citizens living in Spain and as the name suggests is generally opposed to Brexit. The coalition has assessed the joint UK/EU technical note on citizens’ rights, which displays some agreement concerning recognition of professional qualifications and the right to set up businesses after Brexit. It has come to the conclusion in both cases that this right will probably only be valid in the country of residence and not across the EU 27, thereby affecting cross-border workers. Jugger players go on a charity jag THIRTY-SIX Alicante Province players raised â‚Ź230 for charity with a Jugger match in La Nucia. Although playing for the First Random Cup Benefica, competing was left aside, the organisers said. The players were there to enjoy themselves and raise money for the La Casita del Reposo childrenâ€™s centre in Elche, they explained. La Nucia Town Hall offered the use of the Camilo Cano sports ground for the event that was won by Samuel Martinez, Jesus Leal (Midnight Fighters)

and Alejandro Torregrosa (Titanes de La Nucia). There were also nine medals for players with the most points. The Spanish version of Jugger combines elements of ball games and fight sports and is played between two teams of five people who each try to accumulate as many points as possible while preventing their rivals from scoring. Although the game might appear violent, the ball and all weapons are padded or are made from foam.

ment of those with diverse abilities, Oltra said. She was accompanied on her visit to the Rober Palas by acting mayor Mayte Garcia and other councillors. Cliff fall A MAN was airlifted to hospital as he fell whilst walking along the coast of Cap Blanc. The man was walking along the steep cliff between Benissa and Moraira with a friend when he fell, hitting his head and injuring his lower back. THIS Monday September 4 marked a year since the beginning of the Benitachell and Javea fires. The fires destroyed 687 hectares of forest and 122 non-forest hectares. Across the eight days before the fires were pronounced extinguished, 400 personnel worked tirelessly and 1,400 people had to be evicted.

Finger-flicking good SUBBUTEO players old and young are invited to the Palau Municipal D’Esport on Saturday as the Subbuteo club’s new season starts. The newly-formed club welcomes novices along with seasoned Subbuteo players of all nationalities. Subbuteo is a classic finger-flicking foot-

ball-simulation action game. It is played on a large cloth playing field called a ‘pitch,’ with teams of miniature football players mounted on smooth round bases. The football players are made to kick the ball by flicking their bases, which causes them to slide around on the pitch, hitting the ball.

The rules simulate nearly all details of a soccer game including ball possession and passing, throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks. There are even rules on fouling. What makes the game different from most other table top sports games are the hundreds of team kits and accessories. While most games feature only two teams, Subbuteo has several hundred team designs, almost all representing real teams. There are also many additional accessories, such as new balls and goals, special figures for free kicks and throw-ins, stands and crowd, linesmen, ball-boys, streakers and policemen. APASA hold summer sale APASA will hold their much anticipated Summer Sale next week at their charity shop on Javea’s Avenida del Pla. Taking place all week from Monday September 11, shoppers are guaranteed a bargain with 50 per cent off all summer clothes and shoes. APASA was founded in 1999 by a group of various nationalities, Spanish, English, German and Swiss, with the aim of rescuing those animals that were evidently abandoned, ill-treated or lost. Initially there were just a dozen dogs, now there are over 250, needing full time staff. APASA rely greatly on volunteers, working in the shelter, walking dogs and of course at the charity shop and their many fundraising events. All proceeds raised at the Summer Sale will directly fund the goal of making the lives of the dogs better and provide essential care for them. JAVEA WALKERS: Take a water break during their latest trek. MEMBERS of the Javea U3A Healthy Walking Group took to the tracks and paths of Les Valls near Jesus Pobre on their latest expedition. The group, led by group leader Karen White, have continued to enjoy their Monday walks throughout the summer despite some extremely hot weather. Many of the U3A’s groups take a break during the summer - but not the walkers,

whose only concession is to start earlier to avoid the hottest part of the day! Karen’s husband and coleader of the group, Clive, is continuing to make slow but steady progress after suffering a stroke earlier this year and even manages to join members of the Gentle Walking Group on Wednesdays. Fellow walkers wish Clive well in his recovery and look

Appreciating the arts THE Costa Blanca Mountain Walkers enjoyed an evening visit to Gata de Gorgos to admire the exhibition of textiles known as ‘Art Al Vent,’ which decorate Calle La Bassa. The exhibition of textile art has its roots in the popular tradition of hanging bedspreads from balconies and displays the work of textile artists from many countries. The evening concluded with an excellent meal at the Ca Dora restaurant in the town. This was just one of the social events in the

Since 2004 it has prompted many to think about researching their own family history, but how many actually take the plunge? If you were interested, how could you even start? Here in the Costa Blanca, a small group of people determined to find out who they really are and where their families originated, came together 10 years ago as an informal group to learn how this could be done. By sharing personal knowledge on research techniques and information on source material, many members have been able to build up substantial family histories. Take, for example, the member who was convinced her family was from humble origins and not very interesting only to discover that she is descended from the Sergeant Surgeon to the Royal Household of Henry VIII. New electric cars for Madrid AN agreement between Spanish Service Company Ferrovial and Renault has been signed to launch a car sharing service in Madrid called Zity. It will operate from October with a fleet of 500 Zoe electric cars and will initially service the area within the M-30 beltway. The Zoe has a theoretical maximum coverage of 400 kilometres but is more likely to need recharging after 300 kilometres based on normal traffic conditions within the capital.

This will be the third electric car sharing scheme operating within Madrid as both Citroen and Mercedes with their electric Smart car are using the city to demonstrate their ability to run non-polluting vehicles. With various countries promising to phase out ‘gas guzzlers’ in the future, this type of experiment could have important financial implications for manufacturers looking to win drivers over to their models.

Cracking down THE Spanish Tax Agency has created a new obligation for taxpayers to report on investments in excess of €100,000 held in any tax haven. A new law also insists that investments may not be split to try to evade declaration.

SINCE 2012 the National Government has given Catalonia €68.5 billion, saving it a colossal €18 billion in interest if it had borrowed at commercial rates. 1st private law suit THE first private law suit against Banco Popular has been taken to court in Madrid after losing €10,000. According to the plaintiff, he approached a branch of the bank asking to borrow €100,000 in order to purchase a lorry for his business and was instead persuaded to spend €10,000 in buying shares in the bank. He believed promises that this would be a sound financial investment but within less than a year his shares were worthless.

HIGH TECH HOLIDAYS RULE WHILST tourism to Spain continues to boom, the introduction of online booking of accommodation and even rides can cause problems. Two American concepts, represented by Airbnb and Cabify are thorns in the sides of councils and licensed taxi drivers. According to Mintel, the world’s largest market intelligence agency with global offices in Europe, the Far East and Asia, a growing number of Americans are using new technology to plan and book their holidays. Some 19 per cent of young American travellers have booked home share accommodation which is great for the websites, but possibly illegal if accommodation owners don’t bother to license their properties for short term letting. The importance of the licence is three-fold as it ensures that foreign visitors in particular are registered and recorded, property providers have to meet certain standards including air conditioning and the important WiFi connections and tax payments will generate income for the economy. As people get older, so they are less trusting in new high tech developments and whilst they want to have access to the internet, they worry more about being hacked whilst overseas and certainly don’t want to be advised on destinations by helpful Artificial Intelligence. It is no real surprise that those younger tech savvy Millennials (as they are known) are far more adventurous than their parents and welcome such innovations as self check-in areas at airports and check details of local restaurants online before travelling. Almost everyone wants to use their mobile phone to take photographs of their destinations but the younger the person is, the more likely they are to post selfies and pictures of food on their Facebook or other social media pages.

The older traveller appears to prefer to read advice online from peers as to destinations rather than travel company recommendations and they also tend to book flights via airlines or travel agencies, especially if travelling long distances to destinations they haven’t visited before. The bulk of people include modern technology in their packing but the younger they are, the more au fait they are with the options available.

Diesel loses out to petrol THE three largest oil refiners in Spain, Cepsa, Repsol and BP are preparing for a steady decline in demand for diesel within the country. At one time, diesel was the ‘in demand motor fuel’ and they invested heavily in refineries able to cope with the number of diesel cars being sold. Within the last five years however, diesel power has gone out of favour, even though it remains cheaper than unleaded petrol and the oil companies now recognise that car sales in Spain will continue to reflect the change. In the meantime, there is little need for them to cut down their diesel production as they are finding increased markets in Africa, France and Italy.

EU BANS ENERGY GOBBLING VACUUM CLEANERS

Making Europe greener AN important new European law banning the sale of vacuum cleaners using more than 900 watts of power and emitting more than 80 decibels is now in effect. Manufacturers and stores who still hold stock of these machines will be able to sell them until stocks are exhausted but may not produce or import additional machines into the European Union. With the number of bazaars in Spain that import electrical goods from China, it may be the banned cleaners have a longer shelf life here than in other parts of the EU. According to a consortium of environmental organisations, the European Environment Bureau, it is perfectly possible to produce a good quality vacuum cleaner without a large motor or making a loud noise. Former UKIP MEP Roger Helmer told the BBC “By all means let’s make pathetic under-powered vacuum cleaners for export to the EU. “But we must retain the right to make and use sensible full-powered appliances in the UK. This shows why we

must not agree to be bound by EU rules after Brexit.” A British government spokesperson confirmed that whilst the UK remains

part of the Union, it will enforce this and other laws. In the meantime, Sir James Dyson has been to court arguing the EU vacuum standards test is flawed as it only requires manufacturers to undertake these tests in laboratory conditions and without paper bags. The court of appeal has agreed with him, recognising that use of a cleaner in the home, with a bag collecting dust will inevitably see the efficiency of the traditional cleaner drop and motor noise will be likely to get louder. Whilst this matter is being considered by the courts again, Dyson cleaners do at least qualify under the new rules. The driving force behind this new law is the need to reduce the amount of electricity used in the home and the European Commission states that by switching to one of the most energy efficient vacuum cleaners, consumers can save €70 over the lifetime of the product.

Car sales soar in August ONE sign of an economy in recovery is the number of cars sold and August has seen 72,470 new Spanish registrations. This is a 13 per cent increase over the same month last year and with 849,912 sold in the first eight months of 2017, there is an overall increase of 7 per cent. Despite all of the negative publicity received by the Volkswagen Group over the diesel scandal, its Spanish subsidiary SEAT actually took 17 per cent of the entire new registrations with Volkswagen also performing well. GAMBLING: The house usually wins. charity involved in helping the estimated two million British gamblers who may be addicted or be likely to face financial or social problems. Gibraltar has benefited considerably from the influx of offshore betting companies who have decided to make their base on the Rock and does have legisla-

tion in place to police their activities, but with the bulk of gambling revenue coming from the UK it is left to the British regulator to take action. There is something of a problem for the various betting companies as they need punters to lose as much as possible in order to boost their profits but have to be careful not to ‘kill the goose that lays the golden egg.’ Public opinion means a great deal to these companies and if they are considered to be responsible for the break-up of families and leaving individuals bankrupt they will face a significant backlash as well as further fines from the Gambling Commission. Although these are multi-million pound companies some have suggested they are still trying to develop policies which will identify and protect vulnerable customers but this is a slow process. Spain is believed to have a huge interest in sports betting but is regulated by the Spanish Gambling Act which prohibits all forms of online betting and bingo, but due to an anomaly in the law, certain provinces can licence this.

Richest man for hours

MAJOR FINE FOR ONLINE BETTING COMPANY

A GIBRALTAR-based online gambling firm is being fined a record £7.8 million (€8.5 million) by the UK Gambling Commission. The regulator insists that firms that take bets have an obligation to protect their more vulnerable clients from spending more than they can afford which 888 have allegedly not done. The most obvious example of this was 7,000 customers who had voluntarily recorded they had a problem and should not be allowed to bet any longer, but were still allowed to take part in the company’s bingo games. Another problem area highlighted was inability of the company to spot problem gamblers and in one case a customer lost £100,000 (€108,000) a month for 13 months before they recognised his vulnerability. Although the penalty is high, it won’t revert to the Gambling Commission as £3.5 million (€3.8 million) will be refunded to the 7,000 who had barred themselves from gambling but were still allowed to carry on. The balance will be passed to a

If they can no longer manage their affairs in the UK due to a loss of mental capacity, it can cause many difficulties.

You can choose a person or people, who you trust, to act for you when you are no longer able. The best way to avoid the legal and practical difficulties that can occur with the loss of mental capacity is to plan for it in advance by drawing up a document called a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ (‘LPA’).

An LPA must be made while you have full mental capacity.

What is an LPA? An LPA is a legal document that enables you to appoint one or more attor-

neys to act for you when you are no longer able to act for yourself. Your attorney can be a professional,

such as a solicitor or a family member or friend. There are two types of LPA: ‘Health and Welfare’ or ‘Property and Financial Affairs’ An LPA must be made while you have full mental capacity. It is therefore important to make one while you are in good health. Why should you get an LPA? You can choose a person or people, who you trust, to act for you when you are no longer able. If you lose your mental capacity and do not have an LPA, then your family (or the authorities) will have no choice but to make an application to the Court of Protection to appoint a ‘deputy’ to look after your affairs, which can be time consuming and costly. Will my LPA be recognised in Spain? Unfortunately there is no international type of LPA which is guaranteed to work in both the UK and Spain. The advice we give to our clients at Stone King, is that if you have assets in both Spain and the UK, your only safe option is to appoint attorneys in both jurisdictions.

OTHERS THINK IT SOME years ago, a colleague of mine sought to foster a Muslim child. This was not specifically because of the child’s religious background, but merely because due to his circumstances, he appeared to be a lad that would benefit and indeed deserved a bit of TLC and stability in his life. The boy was a 13-year-old illegal immigrant, who had arrived in Dover, basically in the clothes he stood up in (not even a mobile phone!). My caring friend decided to do what he could to see the boy had all he needed for a fair start in life - and his offer was indeed a generous one. With a beautiful country home and three children, one already fostered, you would confidently assume that he and his spouse had all the requirements needed to see this young man happily on his way to a brighter future. Wrong! The lad, bearing a cap, a prayer mat and a Koran, (supplied by the local council adoption authority) duly moved in for a short trial period.

HOW SAD: In the end the boy had to move out and return to an institution. He was warmly welcomed in by a loving family and was obviously extremely happy in his new-found environment. My friend then set about completing the formalities that were required to foster the child on a more permanent basis. And that’s where the prob-

lems began. Before any negotiations could begin, there were a few unshakable ground rules. One. The boy had to be free to pray five times a day. Two. He had to have the facilities of a local Mosque on a Friday. Three. He could only be fed on Halal meat. And

four despite my friend wanting to pay for an extremely well-established and expensive local private college, had to ultimately be taken to a Muslim learning facility some miles away. Somewhat taken aback by this list of requirements my friend attempted to negotiate.

He had no problems with items one and two. However, although he would of course make sure the lad was never offered, or obliged to eat pork, preparing Halal food was far too disruptive to the family’s way of life and routine. As far as the Muslim school was concerned, it was miles away and would present insurmountable problems with school runs etc. His appeals fell on deaf ears. Compromises were out of the question. In the end the boy had to move out (forgetting to take his Koran I may add!) and return to whatever institution he had emerged from. Is that sad or what!? Not only is it sad, it is a positive disgrace when compared to the young white Western girl, who was moved in with a Muslim family, had her cross removed and was made to live with people with whose culture, faith and even language was alien to her. Yet another example of the West kowtowing to Muslim interests, with utter disregard of our own cultural priorities and sense of fair play. Well, all I can say is on our own heads be it. KING FELIPE and the president of the Spanish government Mariano Rajoy got the bird at the pro-peace, antiterrorist march in Barcelona. The placards and banners suggested that this was because Felipe cosied up to the Saudis - who doesn’t? - and sweet-talked them into arms deals while Rajoy’s government is responsible for Spain’s arms sales. Barcelona mayor Ada Colau and regional vice-president Oriol Junqueras said afterwards the recriminators were only exercising their right to freedom of speech. Maybe, but many spent so much time protesting about the Spanish they forgot why they there were there to begin with.

Standing a head taller THE Spanish population were never close to their monarchs and the

Felipe is almost two.metres tall and standing beside him at the Barcelona peace marches, Puigdemont barely reached his ear.

Double objective BY slaughtering tourists in Turkey and Egypt and compromising the industries that serve them, Daesh and its acolytes and successors achieved two goals. Much of their tourism has been diverted to formerly secure Spain which, after the Barcelona and Cambrils attacks, now begins to look less safe. Spain does not and, unhampered by ambivalence, it can do a more sincere job of protecting the population and tourists than Egypt or Turkey. Hoteliers’ most worrying problem right now is the puny, Brexitweakened pound sterling which is more likely to deter British tourists than jihadists.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man OK don’t take this first part literally but I think, after reading a bit, you will get the point I’m trying to make. The next time I go into a bank here I’m considering taking a weapon with me. Let me explain why. The other day I went into the bank with Mrs S, who is the President of our community, at about 12.30pm. A bank, by the way, that is a branch of where the account is held and President S is a signatory on the account. There was nobody else in the bank, not a soul, just the cashier and the staff sitting at their desks staring at computer screens. Mrs S goes up to the desk and says she would like to pay some money into the community account and was immediately told she couldn’t because it was after 10.30am and, anyway, it was the wrong day. ‘Are you kidding? There is nobody here, nobody waiting, you are not doing anything, and the account is at this bank, just not at this branch.’ And you are given that ‘look’ - that stone cold look, the little smug shake of the head and the dreaded shrug. This is where the

weapon would come out and you want to scream ‘Let me pay some money in and nobody will get hurt!’ What is it with these rules and regulations? Nobody can give me a valid reason why this crazy rule is in place that you can only pay in on certain days at certain times. It’s a bank and its job is to allow you to pay money in and maybe take some out if have any or it hasn’t been embargoed by some official department for not paying a bill or fine that you didn’t even know existed… but that’s another grump for another time. Why does there have to be specific times and days? Just take my money. Next day we go back and the bank is rammed with a queue nearly out into the street. The same girl behind the counter is totally unable to cope on her own with the amount of people trying to pay their bills and, of course, people trying to do other stuff. The other desk staff are, of course, still looking at their computer screens totally oblivious of the chaos going on around them. Finally it gets to our turn and she looks up at the clock. It’s 10.31am. I look at her, she looks at me, and I give her my ‘Don’t you dare to try and tell me it’s too late’ look and she takes the money. Me and Mrs S start whooping and hi-fiving fist pumps, the lot. Yay we just paid in money to the bank!!! Sound familiar? Email mikesenker@gmail.com

Bumpy ride I WILL be 75 in November and do a fair bit of cycling on my mountain bike. My favourite route is around Guadalmar near Malaga and I would like to send a message to the traffic chiefs to please put signs up advising motorists of cyclists in the area, who number hundreds at weekends. I am afraid that a lot of motorists also don’t know of the law that when passing bikes drivers should leave a gap of 1.5 metres. I have lost count of the times I have been nearly knocked off

DO the airport workers along with the taxi men who are threatening strike action really care about Spain’s tourists? While I enjoy visiting Spain on a frequent basis, I am not so in love with the place that I am not tempted to think of seeking a new destination where I will be welcomed properly, not by industrial action that can ruin visits. Visiting from Germany I have many options where to spend my money, and while sunshine will always be high on my priorities, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus all have plenty to offer, and without the threat of regular worker walkouts. Make an eye test part of your back to school routine AROUND 30 per cent of school-aged children in Spain suffer from an undiagnosed visual problem that can affect their studies in school. According to experts in paediatric ophthalmology, problems with the eyes can negatively impact a child’s success in school when we consider that much of the information received by the student is perceived through the sense of sight, particularly during their integral development of a child. Good vision is necessary to allow the child to first see and then correctly process the information allowing them to give it a meaning and understand it. Many parents do not carry out eye tests on their children, but experts say much of the visual impairment can occur before the age of six, having a considerable impact on their school work and development. Therefore, whilst new clothes, bags and books are often part of the staple ‘back to school’ purchases, it is recommended to make an eye examination for your child part of the routine.

You should also look out for any of these signs your child may be struggling with their vision: Trouble viewing the blackboard or television; getting close to paper when writing or reading; suffering from headaches and having concentration problems; complaining of double or blurred vision of objects and not understanding or forgetting what they have just read or having to read it several times.

With priority boarding the passenger is seated first towards the front of the plane meaning they are likely t o c o m e i n t o c o n ta c t w ith more people as other passengers go past them to find their seat, increasing their risk of coming into contact with an infected person. They r e c o m m e n d u s in g a tw o zone boarding process, which is used by some companies who still board planes via external stairs directly into the plane. This allows to seat half the plane from the front and ha l f f r o m t h e b a c k , w h ic h would lower passenger contact by around 27 per cent. But there are things you can do to protect yourself against infection on a plane:

UK women most likely to drink whilst pregnant PREGNANT women in the UK are among the world’s worst for drinking during pregnancy and harming their unborn child. A study found that four times more children in the UK suffer alcohol-related birth defects than the global average and ranked seventh out of 195 countries worldwide for the proportion of children born with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This is a series of developmental problems caused by being exposed to alcohol in the womb, being linked to autism and growth difficulties. The study was carried out by the Canadian Institute for Mental Health Policy Research with the lead author saying the issue should become a priority for public health to reinforce the dangers of drinking during pregnancy. The study found that 32 in every 1,000 Britons have FASD compared to the global average of eight per 1,000. It also concluded that one in every 13 women who drink during pregnancy will have a child with FASD. Previously, medical guidelines allowed one or two small glasses of wine once a week, but in 2016 the Department of Health changed the advice and recommended women abstain completely from drinking, however recent research revealed that 28.5 per cent of pregnant women in the UK drank alcohol.

THE Bancaja Foundation has brought the ‘Francis Bacon • Questions of Drawings’ exhibition to Valencia. It displays a selection of 58 drawings by the Irishborn British figurative painter, dating from 1977 to 1992. Francis Bacon (October 28, 1909 - April 28, 1992) was known for his bold, grotesque, emotionally charged, raw imagery. He was best-known for his depictions of popes, crucifixions and portraits of close friends. His abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cage like spaces, set against flat, nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images “in series” and his work typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods, often in triptych or diptych formats. The art critic Robert Hughes described him as

Classic car and motorbike show returns THE ‘Big Heart of Javea’ classic car and motorbike show is coming to the town again on Sunday September 17. The event was a massive success last year and funds raised this year will again go to the local ‘bomberos’ and the Red Cross to show appreciation for all their bravery and hard work fighting the fires that swept through Javea and the surrounding areas. This will be followed by performances by different companies in the Agora at the Casa de Cultura (6pm) and the Pedro Vaello Auditorium (8pm). AS the school year starts, Costa Blanca town halls are recommencing Adult Education Classes. Many classes are aimed at enabling Spanish residents to catch up on compulsory schooling but there are usually Valenciano classes as well as Spanish for foreign residents. September 23 sees a fiesta beginning at 9.30pm at the Social Centre on the Terra Marina urbanisation with the Swag group, followed by a DJ. The traditional Ladies’ Dinner organised by the Associacio de Dones takes place in the Plaça del Poble on September 9. I work out a rough idea how long it will take. If it’s not very long I shop around that area keeping an eye on the counter or wait to hea r m y n u m b e r b ein g called. Spain choosing fixed rate deals for mortgages FIXED rate mortgages are in vogue. Caixabank has revealed that two out of every three of its new mortgages are now fixed

rate. It’s a 45 per cent rise on the number of fixed rate mortgages granted last year. They now account for €2.2 billion

worth of the bank’s current lending. Caixa CEO Gonzalo Gortazar said the refined new product “offers greater security to families, shielding them from possible rate hikes and allowing better management of the household budget.” Fixed rate mortgages have been on the rise nationally since Spain emerged from the financial crisis. Last summer they accounted for roughly 30 per cent of new mortgages. If Caixa’s findings are replicated across the board that proportion will have more than doubled in just a year. It’s an astronomical rise given that fixed rate products accounted for just 3 per cent of the total granted in 2009. Fixed rate mortgages see the banks set an interest rate which is higher than the euribor, thus raising their profit margins in the short term. Families are guaranteed fixed fees and no surprises during the loan period.

Sales soar as demand rockets SALES of second-hand homes have now reached the level seen just before the Sp a n i sh h o u sin g boom really took off in 2007. Figures from the second q u a r t e r o f 2 0 1 7 show a total of 119,408 res id e n t i a l p r o p e r ty transa c t i o n s. Of t h e m 99,34 3 we r e se c o n d hand properties, comparable t o t h e r o u g h ly 100,000 being sold from April to June 2007. The sale of newly construct e d h o m e s i s still well behind the heights of a d e c a d e a g o . With just over 20,000 sales in three m o n t h s, new homes remain slow sellers. In 2007 more than 110,000 sold in the second quarter. Including both secondhand a n d n e w h o m e s , sales sh o t u p b y 5 p e r cent in the second quarter. They are at their highest level since the first quarter of 2011 according to the Spanish Registrar’s College. The group’s quarterly report sa i d t h e r e su lts “show a strong market on the demand side” but notes that it is “linked to a sin g l e l e g o f t h e mark e t , t h a t o f u s e d homes.” Co-founder of the Idealista p r o p e r t y p o r tal, Fernando Encinar, said used homes are selling because that’s essentially all there is on the market. Community is first to take bank to court TYPICAL property finances have been flipped on their head in Spain, where it is the banks who now owe householders money. During the crisis the banks embargoed and took over thousands of Spanish properties from owners struggling with debt. By doing so they took on the responsibility of paying community charges for

lighting, cleaning, and the general maintenances of countless urbanisations. But they haven’t bothered paying the bills. A new report from Spain’s Council of Administrators (CGCAFE) estimates banks now owe more than €330m to housing communities across the country. Banks own embargoed properties in a quarter of a million communities, owing

each of them an average of €1,100. Salvador Diez, president of the CGCAFE, said payment of these debts could make a huge difference to millions of residential buildings with electricity, insurance or hygiene problems. “If we talk about the whole country, the collection of these debts would have a very positive effect on the economy since

communities of owners are an economic engine in their own right,” he said. The most dramatic example can be found in Madrid. A community of owners in Calle Toledo are owed €17,000 by Bankia in unpaid community expenses. Now they are set to become the first community in Spain to take the bank to court and demand payment of the fees.

DURING August the population of our now expanded and internationalised rural hamlet and urbanisation has more than doubled and a dry September might well follow the hot drought driven June to August summer to date. As the temperatures and multinational populations rose one could hear the multilingual mutterings about the inadequacies of summer gardens. ‘We live in what was a green rural active agricultural valley, but now it’s like a suburban urbanisation.’ ‘Oh isn’t it hot after the air conditioning. I’ve been indoors for three days without going out.’ ‘We don’t sit out much in the summer it’s boring. There is not much to see except the pool and its large terrace and the wooden decking is so hot to walk on. But some autumn colour should open up as temperatures fall.’ Fortunately any urban looking pool can be converted into a natural pool surrounded by oxygenating bog plants and some some exotic flowers. An interesting book ‘Converting your conventional pool’ can be obtained via www.ecodesignscape.co.uk. ‘Oh I wish we hadn’t cut down those trees and replaced them with Australian sails - the shade is not as natural or as deep as it used to be swinging in the hammock strung between two thick branches of the carob tree.’ ‘I spend all my time watering the plants but the garden is not as colourful as it was in northern Europe. Luckily they survive and are interesting and relaxing to visit in the oldest part of our mountain valley hamlet. To really enjoy Spain try developing a garden that is different than the general run of the mill.

Why you should branch out with an almond tree, or two IF you want to add a little more variety to your garden, then you might want to consider planting an almond tree. Although thought to have originated in China and the Middle East, these trees also flourish in a Mediterranean climate and have become a common feature in gardens across southern Europe. These elegant trees can reach heights of between four and 10 metres tall, and produce a pretty pink and white blossom in spring. Almond trees thrive in hot, arid summers and wet, temperate winters and tend not to set fruit when planted in regions outside these parameters. They are also averse to overly moist soil and frost in spring. The trees are deep rooted and require planting in well-draining sandy loam. They also have high nitrogen and phosphorus requirements so running organ-

cally takes around five years for them to start producing fruit, although this can be longer depending on the species. These trees can live for up to 40 years, however, so are definitely worth the investment.

Paper wasps SPAIN is home to numerous species of wasp. Though they have environmental benefits such as pollination and eating other pests, the general fear of their sting makes them unwelcome visitors to many homes. One of the most commonly found species in Spain are ‘paper wasps.’ Often seen as a terrace, patio and poolside plague, these critters often make their homes in close proximity to people and their nests and colonies are generally small.

One of the most commonly found species in Spain. Paper wasps are brown in colour with yellow stripes and are at their most active between July and August. They will visit pools and areas where outdoor dining takes place in search of food and water. Environmental experts advise that humans and paper wasps can live in coexistence and not to remove nests until they become a problem. It is important not to anger them, if they appear in large numbers the best option is to exit that area as batting them away will only cause problems. If they feel in danger they will sting and will release pheromones to call more wasps. They also release a similar pheromone upon death so bashing one with a rolled up magazine is not advised. If there are any dead in a swimming pool, do not flick them out as the sting is still effective after death and standing on one barefoot could prove painful. Nests are best removed at night when the wasps are generally not very active but care is advised and anyone unsure should seek the help of a professional.

DEAR David, It seems to me you are the perfect person to address this issue if you have not already. We Brits tend to be natural animal lovers, dogs in particular. But do some animal rescue organisations take advantage of this? There is a huge inconsistency within the animal rescue community in my opinion. Some will ask for a donation of whatever you can afford and you will get a dog that is neutered, inoculated with all legal papers in place, including a full pet passport and microchip. Others can place you in a position where you have to pay for a considerable part of this and stipulate what you are expected to pay as a donation to the charity. I recently heard of the situation of some friends in La Marina on the Costa Blanca whereby they fostered a dog to help a charity out in an emergency and paid all the costs for feeding it. They subsequently became very attached to it and decided to adopt. It was only then that they found themselves having to pay for injections, all documentation, a chip registration change and neutering at a considerable financial cost. What do you think about this? For my part, if someone decides to adopt a dog they should be sure to shop around and learn exactly what is in-

Citroen Berlingo Multispace THE car world is awash with trendy crossover and compact MPVs, some with more accent on image than practicality, but the Citroen Berlingo Multispace is a notable exception. The Multispace is van-based and while the designers have made the frontal profile sleek and smart, the rear retains the boxy look of a van, and to many potential buyers this is actually a plus point. For while rival models lose load space due to lower roof lines, sloping tailgates and intruding wheel arches, the taller Multispace offers an amazing 3,000 litres of space, making it attractive to families and business users. Available in petrol, diesel and even electric form, and with five or seven seats, the Multispace is priced from €18,847 (£17,510) and ne of the most popular versions features the 1.6 litre diesel unit which offers good fuel economy and low emissions. My mid-range Flair had this engine, which offers 98 hp and has a reasonable 0100 kph time of 12.4 seconds and top speed of 165 kph (103 mph). Fuel economy is very good at 23 kpl (65.7 mpg). The five-seat version costs €21,210

What will impress them is the amount of money they will save over a comparable crossover or compact MPV, and the amount of load capacity and versatility they will gain. Seating is very comfortable and there is excellent head and leg room for five occupants and a whopping 675 litres of boot space even with the rear seat in use. Folded, you get 3,000 litres. The Berlingo Multispace is certainly not the best-looker in the sector but it is still attractively styled and offers a blend of true practicality, decent equipment levels and pleasant driving feel at a price that rivals find very hard to match.
