Politician faces party expulsion LOLA SANCHEZ, a spokeswoman for the Ciudadanos party in Nerja, has been announced as the subject of an internal disciplinary investigation. The Ciudadanos disciplinary committee explained Ms Sanchez was investigated “for possibly breaching the guidelines issued by the party,” adding she had been replaced as spokeswoman. The party explained, “an investigation is currently being carried out by the disciplinary committee.” As reported in last week’s Euro Weekly News, the town’s governing team has been warned it faces losing a vote to approve its €31 million 2017 budget. A spokesperson for Ciudadanos said, “the government team has blocked major projects in Nerja, including Playazo (costing almost €900,000), Senda Litoral and the fire station… and the health centre.” They added, the council had not done enough to ensure the town’s cleanliness, “with tourists and residents complaining on a daily basis.” For her part, Nerja’s Mayor, Rosa Arrabal, said, “these are issues we are working on, but they do not only come down to the council.”

It’s party time! Countdown on to grand start The final countdown is on to Malaga Feria, the province’s greatest public party of the year. More than two million visitors are expected at the annual event which opens just before midnight tomorrow (Friday) with fireworks followed by an appearance by local singer and songwriter María del Mar Rodríguez Carnero. Known as La Mari, she will officially open the feria at 11.50pm and will appear with her band Chambao 30 minutes later. The feria origins date back to the 15th century when Malaga was recaptured from

the Moors, an event celebrated ever since. Hundreds of fairground attractions, pop-up bars, dance and music and a tremendous party atmosphere attract scores of thousands - both young and old, Spanish and foreign - nightly to the fair area at El Cortijo de Torres. And the visitors are not just from Malaga City and nearby surrounds. Spanish families en-masse from Madrid and many other cities travel south to attend the annual event as part of their holidays, and many from inland areas including resident expatriates as well as tourists

Dog census THOUSANDS of dog owners in Rincon de la Victoria face fines of up to €2,000 for not registering their pet’s DNA. The town’s council has revealed only 3 per cent of owners have so far complied with a new law which comes in to force on September 24. Council sources say only 300 of the more than 9,700 dogs in the area are registered.

Police protest over pay APPROXIMATELY 60 Local Police officers in Velez-Malaga have attended a council meeting wearing Pinocchio noses and protesting the council’s delay in appr ovi ng €200,000 worth of pay rises. Officers staged a second protest, demanding improvements to their headquarters, as well as asking for an increase in staff numbers, saying they believe at least another 50 officers are needed. The mayor says he is st i l l wi t hi n t he t i m ef r am e t o appr ove t he pay rises and is working to resolve complaints by t he Local Pol i ce, which have been “dragging on for years.”

Dead faint A MOTORCYCLIST, aged 54, has died in Velez-Malaga after apparently fainting at the handlebars. The man was driving along Avenida Juan Carlos I near the El Ingenio shopping centre when it happened.

Shoeless in Nerja THOUSANDS of shoes have been pulled from a river. Unknown to locals, the Rio Chillar was housing a staggering amount of footwear. The operative services of Nerja have pulled out so many shoes, that they have filled an entire skip. Blaze sweeps Almuñecar A TREMENDOUS forest blaze created a social media inferno. Facebook and Twitter feeds were engulfed with photographs of the flamestrewn countryside. The Almuñecar wildfire in Velilla centred around the area of Calle de La Romantica, located just above the local beach and behind the Casa Pico restaurant. There have been no reports of serious injuries but the fast-travelling sea of flames came within a very close proximity of houses and apartment blocks. A fire engine and total of nine firefighters and personnel of the environmental agency attended the scene, as well as a number Local Police officers.

Missing manhunt continues… THE Guardia Civil are continuing the hunt for a missing 68-year-old man who has Alzheimer’s, identified only as Antonio A G, who went missing from VelezMalaga on July 28. Police have appealed for information on his whereabouts using Twitter. According to the Guardia Civil, the man was wearing light coloured trousers and a shirt when he went missing.

Regional hospital overhaul WORKS have begun to improve the Axarquia Regional Hospital and is being carried out in two phases to ensure medical services are not interrupted. This project will see the number of operating theatres available increase by 25 per cent, from four to five, and the amount of beds in the post-surgery recovery centre double from six to 12.

Full of festivity ALMUNECAR’S Council has finished preparatory work for this year’s Feria, which will host patron saint festivities until Tuesday, August 15. The annual carnival, which began on Monday, sees booths and various attractions fill the area, requiring electrical works, as well as improvements to water supplies and gardening in order to ensure the exhibition ground ready.

Quality beaches ALMUNECAR’S beaches have been awarded the Q of Quality in recognition of their services, cleanliness and commitment to the environment. Puerta el Mar and Velilla received the flags, which were hoisted by Tourism Councillor, Rafael Caballero, and Beaches Councillor, Luis Aragon. In order to qualify, councils must submit the coastal spots to a maintenance audit every year, and “a more exhaustive renewal process every two years.”

Living in fear of fire SPAIN’S southern residents view long dry periods as frequently a harbinger and sometimes killer, and all too often totally destructive, wild forest fires. The average total burnt area in the EU Mediterranean countries - Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal and France - has quadrupled since the 60’s, with about 1.5 per cent of woodlands lost annually. Research shows that rural depopulation leads to an increasing number of wild fires, and climate change - with more frequent droughts and rising temperatures - an added factor. Arsonists, cigarettes, out-of-control garden fires, barbecues, sun shining off a piece of glass: there are many causes of the terrifying annual wild fires that Spain suffers. Modern firefighting methods see yellow fire planes and helicopters swooping down to collect sea, lake and at times pool water to then drop on out-of-control blazes… but it is often a mammoth and always scary operation that puts lives and homes at risk, as well as valuable natural surrounds.

FOREST FIRES: Can be totally destructive.

THE most remembered wild fires in Spain this century include: 2003. A late August thunderstorm in Extremadura led to 35,844.19 acres being destroyed. 2004. In total 29,867 acres of forest burned for nine days from July 27 in Huelva with two elderly people killed trying to leave their properties. 2005. A Guadalajara fire caused by a hiker’s barbecue burned more than 13,000 acres and killed 11 firefighters. 2006. A total of 95,947.38 acres of forest burned in Galicia, with 281 fires recorded on August 10. 2009. A July forest fire in Tarragona destroyed 2,718 acres in Els Ports Park, with five firemen losing their lives.

The Brexit clock keeps ticking WITH the clock fast running down to Brexit, a former head of the diplomatic service has indicated that things are not going well. According to Sir Simon Fraser, there is no clear position and he feels that differences between cabinet ministers are causing delays in putting together a cohesive strategy. As the UK economy seems to be taking a bit of a knock with retail sales down three months running and the Bank of England adjusting forecasts to show a reduction in growth, the pound has also suffered against the euro. The Irish government isn’t happy about possible border options and MPs can’t even agree whether Britain should make a ‘divorce settlement’ to leave the European Union, let alone how it should be. Simon Manley, the British Ambassador in Madrid is doing his best to keep people informed but it’s certainly an uphill struggle for him as the reality is that there is plenty of speculation but nothing definite for him to confirm. In the meantime, the EU Brexit negotiator has also suggested that the British position falls far short of expectation and he feels that the British government doesn’t really know what it wants.

Failure to pay up SIXTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD lottery player, Antonio Diacono, has filed a complaint with the State Lottery after the company allegedly failed to pay his winnings for 10th prize. Diacono, resident of Almayate, has allegedly lost out on €12,000 after playing the lottery for more than a year. “I have religiously placed bets with the State Lottery for over a year, and now I have won an important prize, the lottery tells me the prize has been awarded to another,” he lamented. “I have filed a complaint against the Lotteries and State Betting and expect a quick resolution, I feel like I have been cheated after experiencing such luck,” he added. The lottery administration responded with a statement claiming: “This man has not paid for his subscription in over two months, and now he sees that his old numbers have come up, he wants to claim the ticket he sold on months ago.”

YASMIN: Enjoying the sun. TWENTY-THREE-YEAROLD TOWIE star, Yazmin Okhellou, has landed at Malaga Airport following her recent nose job in Turkey. The Only Way is Essex stunner showed off plenty of leg and an impressive tan in a black dress as she was greeted by costars Lauren Pope and Mario Falcone. Yazmin, who is going out with boyfriend, James Lock, jetted to Turkey last month for surgery to her nose and now plans to spend the next few weeks on the Costa del Sol, where she will be filming scenes for the reality TV show as well as soaking up the sun.

The Portuguese-born brunette showed off her stunning figure as she chatted with friends and dried herself off following a dip in the water. The only one of her friends to venture into the water, the model appeared to have been checking out the local marine life, holding a pair of goggles in one hand. The family were taking a

day trip to Palma’s Can Prunera Modern Museum when they were snapped by photographers. Queen Letizia, a former journalist, is known for her laid-back style, opting to walk to the cultural site rather than be driven. Golden Oldie NERJA’S Council has begun the process of organising its second annual senior citizens week, which brings together various groups and organisations from the town to provide activities and talks.

White night NERJA is hosting its 10th annual Fiesta Blanca celebration on Monday from 9pm to 3am where the Rio Chillar meets Playa el Chucho, with around 3,000 people expected to attend.

Ash stash TORRE DEL MAR’S Council has distributed 2,400 ash trays for use around the town’s beaches in an effort to raise awareness and prevent littering.

Budget fail RINCON DE LA VICTORIA’S Council has been revealed to have spent 70 and even 100 per cent of its entire annual budget on some items so far this year.

GPS help VELEZ MALAGA’S Council has announced it is launching GPS devices for Alzheimer ’s patients after two sufferers went missing in the last month alone. The devices are small, lightweight and can be worn by the patients around the neck.

Oscar Medina, the town’s mayor, said further signage and lighting has also been installed, in the hope of improving accessibility to the busy tourist destination over the peak season. Mayor Medina, alongside Paola Moreno, councillor for Infrastructure,

Free parking said the move would “ensure a quality stay for residents and visitors. We have created three parking areas, both public and private, at three points around our coast, which is currently very popular.” Councillor Moreno added, “spaces have been made available in Arroyo Manzano and next to Rio Torrox, as well

as in the Espinosa Venta area, all of them under municipal ownership, as well as several additional points in El Morche. Following talks with the current owners of Horto Malaga, there will also be access to this area which, like the others, will be properly marked and illuminated at night.”

She explained, “the work was carried out over the last few weeks so that at the start of the high season, when occupancy is at 100 per cent, parking is not an inconvenience for anyone in Torrox.” Councillor Moreno also explained plans to “expand the parking area in the vicinity of El Morche.” She said, “works are currently underway so we can expand the blue zone parking and hope it will be operational soon.”

PRODUCCIONES INFANTILES: Teaches children about Peneque.

It’s all child’s play LA HERRADURA has celebrated its 19th annual puppet festival in an event offering free shows and performances for the town’s children. The event, which took place in Plaza Independencia, hosted “fun and informative” performances from puppeteers from Spain and further afield. The festival, which brought together four different puppet companies, was

held over three days from 10pm, starting with the company Owl Theatre, which performed a show teaching maths, music and diversity through the story of a cute camel which has four humps. On Friday, August 4, the company Pequeños Duendes, performed their show Pezciclaje about recycling and urban waste, teaching the importance of looking after the

sea and nature. While on Saturday August 5 Producciones Infantiles Miguel Pino occupied the stage with their work Peneque Fu Man Chi, about Peneque, a brave boy, who in this edition travels to the Far East. The final night saw The Carriage of the dreams of Andersen present a story about puppeteers and musicians, called Angels of Trapo.

By Linda Hall A CAMPELLO Town Hall pilot scheme is now providing free WiFi for the Carrer La Mar beach. Antennas angled towards the beach have been installed at the Biblioplaya open-air library on the promenade and will provide one mega of WiFi connectivity for between 1,000 and 1,500 users. No password is necessary. The technical installation was carried out by municipal personnel and is currently giving coverage between the Club Nautico to roughly halfway along the promenade. The town hall decided to provide the service in response to repeated requests from tourists and residents who want an internet connection while they are on the beach, explained Beaches councillor, Cintia Alaves. The project is still at the experimental stage, the councillor continued, but depending on the public reaction to the initiative this could eventually be extended to all of Campello’s beaches.

SECURITY STAFF STRIKE AT EL PRAT BARCELONA AIRPORT

€300,000 fine on the cards FOLLOWING the breakdown of talks between Eulen and staff, the company that manages security at Barcelona El Prat Airport could be fined €300,000. Security staff are in conflict with employers as they demand better working conditions and more staff, but this breakdown could cost Eulen dearly as it works under contract from AENA which has overall management of the airport. The existing agreement allows AENA to take direct action against Eulen and, as its staff are about to undertake a number of potentially crippling strikes during the airport’s busiest time, the courts have been asked to approve the levy of two fines, each of €150,000. Ironically, AENA had already approved an exceptional payment of €425,000 effective from Saturday July 1 in order to allow for the recruitment of additional staff, to ensure that passengers were able to proceed through the airport without unnecessary delay. AENA has also rejected a request from Eulen to assist in the mediation procedures with its employees, which would be a complete change of procedure, as it has never been involved in trying to settle a dispute between a contractor and their employees. With the bad publicity arising from passenger delays for passengers from non-Schengen countries, caused by new EU passport checking regulations and now possible long delays to leave, Barcelona could find itself losing a large number of visitors who could easily go elsewhere in the medium term. The local government has become involved and demanded that a minimum level of service is maintained over each 24-hour period, but as the workers’ representatives and the employer appear to be at loggerheads, long delays in very hot conditions will do nothing to sooth passenger

IMF SURPRISED BY ECONOMIC GROWTH THE International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the latest group to upgrade expectations for the Spanish economy by the end of 2017 by half of 1 per cent. It now forecasts that growth will rise to 3.1 per cent from its original forecast of 2.6 per cent and confirms that it is surprised how well a number of EU economies, namely, Spain, France, Germany and Italy are doing. Next year, it expects Spain to lead economic growth within the European Union with a slightly lower 2.4 per cent which will be well above the average, and even beat former ‘power house’ Germany. Despite the positive news, the IMF report warns that there are potential pitfalls ahead due to excess capacity, ageing populations and delays in investment, leading to little advance in productivity. Focusing on Spain, the organisation worries about the high public pension payments - the value of which is higher than the European average - and wants to see an increase in private pension schemes.

Otherwise, it believes that the age to receive the state pension will have to be increased. Clearly, this and the demand that pension rises should be capped and IVA be further increased are not popular with Spanish residents, and the National Government, ever-decreasing in popularity, will have to be very careful about its actions. As opposition parties complain that the new growth in the economy has not been reflected in the day-to-day affairs of those who are in work, one

group will be pleased with the government, as 252,000 women will see additional payments with their pensions. Those pensioners who had two children will receive at least a 5 per cent bonus and this will be increased for each additional child up to a maximum of four in order to recognise the importance of women who broke their years of social service contributions to increase the population. More female pensioners in Andalucia than any other province will benefit from this increase.

Higher costs for firms THE 2017 budget deadlock meant that new social security charges for self-employed had to be suspended, but they will now cost an average of €100 per annum. Many were taken by surprise when they discovered that their monthly payments had risen by 3 per cent after the increase was approved by Congress, although there was a corresponding uplift of the minimum income to be required to pay this contribution. The actual amount involved will vary depending upon declared income and, as with the UK, the more you earn, the more you pay and even the reduced rate for those aged over 48 has been increased in line with other rates.

Beware intelligent appliances THERE has been a great deal of discussion recently about the safety of intelligent household devices and possible hacking of information. Equally worrying for some, according to Mintel, the world’s largest market intelligence agency with g l o b a l o ff i c e s i n E u r o p e , the Far East and Asia, is the fact that different companies can purchase information from manufacturers. The report suggests that in Britain just 30 per cent of those interviewed believed that insurers could be trusted to manage the data, and more than 75 per cent are apprehensive about theft of the information or the fact that it could be sold on. As more of these sophisticated devices find their way to Spain, similar fears are likely to arise.

More foreign investment SPANISH energy distributor Gas Natural Fenosa is selling 20 per cent of its business to two overseas investors for €1.5 billion. The agreement with Allianz Capital Partners - a London based operation with offices across Europe - and Canadian pension fund CPPIB is likely to be finalised by early 2018 when approved by the different regulatory bodies. Currently the company has 5.3 million supply points across 1,100 different towns but wants to use the investment to expand its operation to take in many more locations. This is the third sale of significant percentages of Spanish energy companies to overseas investors so far this year with a total spend of more than €4.5 billion.

MANY UK expatriates living in Spain own properties in the UK and have pensions and investments in the UK. They rely on their UK assets to maintain their lifestyles (and those of their families) in Spain. If they can no longer manage their affairs in the UK due to a loss of mental capacity, it can cause many difficulties.

You can choose a person or people, who you trust, to act for you when you are no longer able. The best way to avoid the legal and practical difficulties that can occur with the loss of mental capacity is to plan for it in advance by drawing up a document called a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ (‘LPA’).

An LPA must be made while you have full mental capacity.

What is an LPA? An LPA is a legal document that enables you to appoint one or more attor-

neys to act for you when you are no longer able to act for yourself. Your attorney can be a professional,

such as a solicitor or a family member or friend. There are two types of LPA: ‘Health and Welfare’ or ‘Property and Financial Affairs’ An LPA must be made while you have full mental capacity. It is therefore important to make one while you are in good health. Why should you get an LPA? You can choose a person or people, who you trust, to act for you when you are no longer able. If you lose your mental capacity and do not have an LPA, then your family (or the authorities) will have no choice but to make an application to the Court of Protection to appoint a ‘deputy’ to look after your affairs, which can be time consuming and costly. Will my LPA be recognised in Spain? Unfortunately there is no international type of LPA which is guaranteed to work in both the UK and Spain. The advice we give to our clients at Stone King, is that if you have assets in both Spain and the UK, your only safe option is to appoint attorneys in both jurisdictions.

ONE thing that does surprise me (not really!) is why the media has carefully avoided mentioning the fact that the Grenfell Tower block was filled with 99 per cent of ethnic immigrants? As these apartments were presumably allocated by local council authorities, does this not seem in direct contradiction to thegovernment’s oft spouted ambition to do everything in their power to ‘integrate immigrant cultures into the British way of life?’ It seems to me that all they achieved in this instance was to create a towering ghetto of people who would, by the very nature of their environmental existence, have found it difficult to take on British culture and values, even if they had wanted to. At best, this biased selection process is a misdirected exercise in culture relationships and, at worse, blatant racism. I would be extremely interested to know how many of those in charge of tenant selection, were actually immigrants themselves? As time passes, and people of ethnic origins (often quite rightly) move into more and more decisiontaking positions, the emergence of reverse racism is subsequently ever-present and needs to be severely dealt with. I’ll cite you one example of what I’m alluding to. My nephew, aged 21, moved back to Northern Ireland after a year working in Spain. Having no immediate employment, he decided to sign on at the local Social Se-

OTHERS THINK IT curity offices. Waiting in the queue he found himself behind two black ladies, colourfully attired in the costumes of whatever country they originated from. He then patiently stood and waited for some 20 minutes, while the clerk behind the counter, also of ethnic origin, laboriously, and in great detail explained all the benefits that the two enquirers were entitled to. When they finally moved away, my nephew took up their place and politely explained to the man that he had been out of the country for a year and what was his position regarding any benefits? Curtly and rudely he was informed he had been out of the country too long and couldn’t be helped. Next! Er, just a minute. The aforementioned woman had never lived in the country.

How come they were entitled to 20 minutes of the clerk’s attention, while my nephew, who had been born, bred and previously worked in Northern Ireland, was rudely brushed aside with no explanation whatsoever! Now if that example doesn’t smell of reversed racism, I don’t know what does.

As more immigrant members of our society move into these higher authorative positions, they have to be monitored very carefully and deterred in the strongest possible way of practising the racism many of them may well have been have been accusing others of for years. However misdirected, some will be

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WE all see, and some of us even have our favourite ‘Looky Looky’ men, especially in the coastal regions of Spain where we live. They sell all sorts of stuff and mostly copies of famous brands and when you buy your Rolex or Louis Vuitton bag you know full well that for 20 or 30 euros it’s not real. Is it correct? Maybe not. The big companies complain it’s damaging to their business. Some of us think that the person that buys a ‘moody’ Rolex for €20 is highly unlikely to buy a real one for €12,000, but it’s something that is pretty much accepted rightly or wrongly. But there is a darker side of the fake business and some of it is even life threatening and that is what is making me seriously grumpy. I’ve seen copies of famous brand toothpaste, shampoo, booze and cigarettes which all, when tested, contained poisons. Every brand of mobile phone and the accessories, game consoles and most electronic items are being sold, not in the back streets somewhere, but openly on ebay and other online sources. People are looking to buy items for

themselves or as gifts only to find that when it arrives, and sometimes after it blows up or shorts out, that what they have bought is fake and it seems the powers to be can do very little about it. One of the things to look out for is the price. If you see a brand new iPhone7 for €300 I can almost guarantee it’s a fake, even if it’s advertised as an unwanted gift. If something looks too good to be true then it most likely is. The other day I was looking for a new keyboard for a Microsoft tablet I have. It’s a model which has been superseded but which works perfectly well. I phoned Microsoft and they didn’t have them any more so I looked online and there were loads of them for sale... not one of them real but being advertised as genuine. They were all being shipped from China. I finally found one that actually said it wasn’t original but was made to work with the tablet I had, so I’ve had a punt at that via Amazon. I’ll let you know if it works. It also works the other way round. I put a watch on ebay to sell and the amount of people that tried to get me to deliver it saying payment had been sent was quite astonishing, So be careful when buying and selling. Vehicle transfers AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

CAR TRANSFERS: Not so complicated.

MANY companies and solicitors can arrange for all vehicle transfers to be done on your behalf when buying a new car. But for those wanting to save themselves a few euros, it is not as complicated or as difficult as you may think. Here we explain the process step by step so you can do it yourself... If you have bought a new car remember you have 15 days to transfer it into your name. To do this first you must have completed the sales contract and from this date you will be the provisional owner. You then have 15 days to complete the transfer process. During this time you need to collect the following documents: the sales contract signed by both parties; a photocopy of the seller’s ID; the original logbook (permiso de circulación) and the ITV paperwork; last year’s Suma tax and application to

change the ownership which is the ‘solicitud cambio de titularidad.’ This can be downloaded from the DGT website or obtained from the Traffico office. With these documents in place you can call the 060 number to make an appointment. Next go to the Tax Office (Hacienda) and pay the Transfer Tax (transmisiones patrimoniales) which is form 620. This form can be downloaded from the Ministry of Treasury website at www.agenciatributaria.es. After paying the tax, go to the Traffic Office where you will pay a fee, depending on the vehicle you are going to buy, and give them the receipt you got when you paid the 620 form, along with all your documents. In a few minutes the vehicle transfer will be made and you will then be the legal owner.

How can they fix the leak? I own an apartment in a Community in Mallorca. Last year we noticed a leak in our shower room. Our neighbour above has the same layout so the leak was obviously coming from his shower. Our neighbour said he would “deal with it.” I repaired my ceiling and I thought the problem was over. When we returned to Mallorca in January the shower room ceiling was leaking again. I informed our Administrator and she said she Owners in a Community are oblige d to allow e ntr ance into the ir prope r ty fo r necessary repairs of a problem affecting other owners.

TODAY I reached a new level of grumpiness. There were several reasons, ie our village of Los Pacos, Fuengirola, has had its one-way system reversed due to roadworks. This normally would just create a ‘grump,’ but after taking the longer route round I discovered the roadworks had led the normal delivery of the EWN to be affected at my two usual pick-up points. With my grumpiness level rising I was forced to head to Los Boliches in search of the paper on a very hot day and without a bottle of water to hand. Grumpier by the minute as I go to pick up an EWN I trip over the small entrance step and end up on my hands and knees. EWN in hand, I return home against a seemingly endless tide of ‘beach people’ dodging around families laden with chairs, rubber rings, parasols, cold boxes, children and all other paraphernalia people seem to find necessary. Eventually back home hot and sweaty, I pour a glass of cold water and open the EWN to my favourite section ‘Grumpy Old Man.’ But there is NO ‘Grumpy’ column to be seen!! My own grumpy level now reaches the RED zone! Is Mike Senker not grumpy this week? No, that’s not possible, but I need my own weekly Grumpy fix! Luckily I had some back issues of the EWN! Ageing with grace IS your man getting better with age under the Spanish sun? According to new research from leading market intelligence agency Mintel, as many as 75 per cent of men aged 65 and over feel confident about the way they look, compared to just over half (56 per cent) of men aged 16-24 and an average of 61 per cent of all men. While 67 per cent of all men say they look good for their age, this increases to a self-assured 71 per cent of those aged 65 and over. Proving Britain’s men are happy to accept ageing with grace, almost four in five (78 per cent) men questioned agreed that it is acceptable to have some wrinkles, while 68 per cent said that skin ageing is a natural process that can’t be stopped. The Spanish Society of Physicians Of Primary Care (SEMERGEN) reminds holidaymakers that flights longer than four hours can increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurring and in flights of more than 12 hours, the condition increases substantially with the risk higher in those with preexisting conditions that can increase the risk factor, such as those who have had recent surgery, cancer treatment, trauma, pregnancy or who have previously had DVT. The condition is a blood clot that forms in a vein when blood slows and thickens and clumps together and mostly occurs in the lower leg. To help reduce the risk remember to drink lots of water and stay hydrated, keep moving as much as possible, even if you are just doing feet and leg exercises whilst sitting. WHAT is halitosis? Halitosis, also known as bad breath, can be defined as the combination of unpleasant odours that are emitted by the mouth. It affects up to half the population. What causes it? There are two types of halitosis, oral halitosis and extra-oral halitosis. The first forms in the oral cavity itself, and is usually due to the accumulation of oral biofilm (bacterial plaque) on the tongue. However it can also be caused by other things such as: Periodontal issues, dental cavities, smoking and others. When halitosis originates from outside t h e o r a l c a v i t y, i t i s called extra-oral halitosis. It tends to be caused by systemic disorders of the upper or lower respiratory tract, the digestive system as well as hepatic or renal illnesses. C a n i t b e p re v e n t ed? Maintaining adequate oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth and

tongue, as well as mouth should be enough to prevent halitosis. Should I seek medical help? Yo u s h o u l d a l w a y s see a specialist in order to determine the origin of the halitosis and how best to treat it. In most cases it is due to problems within the mouth however sometimes it can be the sign of a more serious illness. How can I tell if I have halitosis? In general, halitosis is difficult to diagnose, as it is highly unlikely that a person will notice their own bad breath. In some cases a person merely suspects they have bad breath. If in doubt, it is worth speaking to people you trust who would be able to notice bad breath. Help from an orthodontic specialist can also aid diagnosis. When diagnosing someone with halitosis, fundamental aspects of their life, such as their general health, their habits, and their oral hygiene are taken into account.

RENOWNED English musician and producer, Martin Glover, has announced the second edition of the Space Mountain Festival in Granada this October. The event, in which international and national artists, as well as musicians, come together, will see 30 live performances, jam sessions, interactive talks with artists, and audio-visual projections at the musician’s studio. The first immersive arts and music festival open to the public will run from October 6 to 8 in Glover’s ‘Space Mountain’studio, allowing festival-goers the opportunity to see ‘music created and mixed live in a professional recording studio with award winning producers.’ Artists The Egg, Alex Paterson, The Orb, Jaz Coleman, Nik Turner, Roger Eno, Solea Morente, Sonido Vegetal, Shpongle, James Monro, and XDream are among those invited. ALMUNECAR’S fifth Summer Jam Festival is coming to town, offering five hours of live music in El Majuelo Park on Friday, August 18. The event, which takes place in the park’s auditorium, will see hip-hop and reggae performances from Rapsusklei, Sharif, Ikki & Costa, Sho hai, Chuty BTA, Shabu & El Niño, in one of the biggest showcases of its kind in Andalucia. Olga Ruano, councillor for Culture, presented the festival alongside promoter and organiser, Enrique Jimenez, from company Boom Bap. Councillor Ruano explained the event has attracted almost a thousand young people in its four previous editions, adding, “This is one of the few

festivals where children can attend accompanied by relatives.” Artists from the Quilate collective explained, “is a unique festival for outdoor audiences in an unbeatable environment.” Adding, “this is the summer version of the well-known Boom Bap brand that has taken place throughout Andalucia.” One of the event’s main acts, Rapsusklei, is one of the best-known hip-hop artists in Spain and will present his latest work, sixth album, Sharif. The festival, which will offer five hours of music from 7pm, maintains the price of previous editions at €11. FEW weeks ago we featured an article about allergies. I mentioned there are many restaurants now who take the whole allergy thing very seriously. In fact there are laws that govern menus and menu content here in Spain. Staff has to be trained with regard to this. But it does get a bit silly at times. A young chef in Australia has got to the end of his tether having received three orders in one evening that proves that some people take the opportunity to use ‘allergies’ as a way to rewrite the menu! His post on Instagram got a huge response from fellow restaurateurs as well as food writers. As one contributor wrote, “There is nothing wrong with having a food preference or not liking certain foods. Please don’t call it an allergy though. True food allergies are rare, but for those who have them they are deadly.” Another said, “As a chef for over 30

NO ALLERGIES: If you don’t like something, then just say so. years I have had enough of fake allergies, it makes a chef’s life so hard and the life of allergy sufferers very hard.” Some of the requests that Chefs get are: ‘Shellfish allergy but love oyster sauce’ ‘Gluten free but love gluten as long as it’s not a piece of bread’ - ‘I’m Vegetarian but I love a chicken wing.’ How about Pescaterians that eat chicken? I used to have a delightful young lady client who was Vegan. She used to eat with us a lot because our chefs could always produce something interesting for her. But on some occasions she would order a Fillet

Steak. Her reason for the change of mind was because she claimed Vegan as her sort of detox and her steak an occasional guilty pleasure. That I understand. The classic of course is a couple on their first date. When ordering, it is not unusual to hear, “I’m allergic to onions” but invariably they just want to avoid onion breath! So, the moral of this story is if you have a genuine allergy then say so, If you don’t like or want a particular thing, just say so. But don’t lead the staff and kitchen into the fear there is an allergy - as that entails many different variants!

Apologies and thanks I WAS a little disappointed, yet pleased, that someone had picked me up on my oyster article of last week. Perhaps the headline distorted the article. I was not saying that oysters were responsible for food poisoning, but that they did not contribute to the illness any more or less than mushrooms, chicken or shellfish in general. In fact I think the article showed that oysters were considerably less likely to cause food poisoning than other items. (include mayonnaise and eggs in general) But I thank Eddie Cheeseman (what a great name for a foodie!) for his contribution to the argument. A little knowledge can be a very dangerous thing indeed. I used to offer £1,000 to anyone who could find an oyster farmer who told you that you just swallow, and not chew, an oyster, As you stated oysters are now purified by law, an allergic reaction to them is rare in the extreme. The only thing that can interfere with the cleansing process

is unfortunately human intervention. As you failed to point out there are now many oysters for sale here in Javea in most supermarkets. French mostly but more recently from areas in Spain. Tortosa (just below Barcelona) and Pontevedra on the west coast, all delicious. However, they are often displayed in supermarkets standing on end (so all the water falls out) and still no oyster knives on sale with them? We like to think we had something to do with the increased sales locally following our oyster hut at a seafood festival here in Javea. Personally I have introduced hundreds if not thousands of people to the delights of oysters (even in schools) for the first time, explaining fully what they were used for, and are used for now, and to date no-one has ever spat one out. You can be assured that over 95 per cent of people who have a negative response such as ‘I don’t like them’ or say ‘Ugh!’ when you mention oysters have

My sister is unfortunately one of those that ‘spitting them out’ or not even attempting to try them - they fall in to the mussels, clams and snail varieties is her defence and she still insists in branding them as ‘bogies’!

WHEN it comes to Viña Tondonia, most people would not tell the difference. The quality of this wine from Bodega Lopez de Heredia ranks among the best for Rioja aficionados, but with a leaning to French Claret! In 1877, its founder Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially with the mythical area around the hilltop town of Haro. He recognised that there was a magical combination of soil and climate which would offer the perfect environment for producing a wine that would eventually become world famous The fermentation takes place in vast, impressive vats which are up to 140 years old. Beneath the winery is a complex network of underground galleries; hundreds of metres of slowly maturing, home-made barrels filled with ethereal liquid are kept for years before release. They take things to such a distinct level that their Reservas are aged for considerably longer than the minimal legal requirement for Gran Reservas - rather than 18 months + five years, they spend five to six years in barrel, then the same in bottle. As Luis Gutierrez - robertparker.com says, while awarding 93 points to the 2005 vintage explains : “The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70 per cent Tempranillo, 20 per cent Garnacho, 5 per cent Graciano and 5 per cent Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of the Ebro River, where they have some 100 hectares of vineyards. The wine fermented in the original oak vats that are now some 140 years of age. There is no temperature control and malolactic was also in the vat. The wine was transferred to oak barrels where it slowly matured in their deep, humid caves for no less than six years. After this, it was bottled unfiltered after being fined with egg whites. I think the quality gap between Reserva and Gran Reserva has been getting smaller since the 2001 vintage and this 2005 is nothing short of exceptional. It’s clean and complex, with more freshness. The wine is very spicy and with a palate that feels very balanced, livelier than in the past. It has a long finish where the flavours are clean. Easy to drink and very pleasurable.” Not one you pick up from the Supermarket on a daily basis, but available at good wine shops at around 20€ a bottle. Santé. TONDONIA: One of the best.

Five-star luxury housing SPAIN’S luxury housing market is now one of the most exciting on the planet. Political stability and a booming economy have seen long waiting lists develop for properties priced at more than €10,000 per square metre. Barcelona and Madrid are at the centre of the emerging luxury market according to real estate giant Lucas Fox, which manages an international portfolio of high-end homes. In the capital almost 1,000 properties valued at more than €1.5 million were sold last year. That represented an increase of 60 per cent on the previous year according to data from Engel & Volkers. 6. What climbers need to be trimmed back? 7. Do paths, terraces and flowerbeds need sweeping, vacuuming or blowing?

ANTHROPOMORPHISM. This is the word that is used when it is believed that dogs have the same feelings and emotions as humans and that they understand human language. A mistaken belief, of course. Dogs are not small, furclad human beings. They are canines. True, they are man’s best friend and companion because their natural instincts and hierarchical society blends into that of humans, and because they show loyalty and devotion

to the hand that feeds them. As we have seen in the chapter on wolves, this bonding between man and dog happened thousands of years ago when both man and wolf lived similar nomadic lives as hunters roaming the country to seek food. The dog’s adaptation to our way of life was assisted and accelerated by man using selective breeding to develop the most desirable features, first to work for humans and then to turn them into pets. Even so, there remain, of course, fundamental differences between humans and their dogs. To take just one example, dogs live totally in the present moment. They do not worry about the past. They do not dream about the future. They are not endowed with

imagination or feel grief, hate, jealousy or greed or other emotions that bedevil human society. They do have a high sensory ability which can be mistaken for a kind of sixth sense. They will understand certain words like sit, stay or down require the right reaction if they are to be rewarded with a tit-bit or praise. They will understand whether a tone of voice and facial expressions are good or bad when they are spoken to, in whatever language, but they will not understand longer phrases.

Human emotions are often attributed to dogs when, in fact, they are reacting instinctively. It is assumed that dogs are happy to see their owners when

they return home and it looks pleased and wags it tail. All it is doing is reacting in the same way a wolf puppy reacts when the pack returns with food from a hunt. It behaved in the same way when it was feeding from its mother along with the rest of the litter. It is true the dog is enjoying a pleasurable experience but it is not pleasure in human PACK HIERARCHY: Dogs have natural wolf instincts.

terms. Another example of anthropomorphism is when it is believed that a dog is ‘sulking’ when it returns home from a stay in kennels, or is grieving over the death of a member of the family. In the latter case, what it will be feeling is the loss of a higher member of the ‘pack’ and the anxiety caused by no longer knowing its position in the family hierarchy. It will also be confused by the vibrations of distress it picks up from the family. Once the ‘pack’ has settled again, the dog will make a quick recovery, as lives in the present and doesn’t mourn the past. So do not attribute dogs with human emotions. Try to understand their simple canine minds, which are untroubled by so many of our emotions.

Classic Car Club of Andalucia HE Classic Car Club of Andalucia has grown in stature and numbers considerably over the past nine years. There are a number of celebrity members and motor-sport luminaries as members and a first class number of life-time honorary members. These include former Jaguar works racing driver, Win Percy, former WEC champion and Porsche works racing driver, John Fitzpatrick. These two are still the only Brits ever to have taken on the famous Australian race, the Bathurst 1000 and won it! That was in 1976 and 1980. Retired McLaren F1 Team boss Jo Ramirez and also one time Ayrton Senna F1 teammate and now Sky TV F1 commentator, Mark Blundell, Dragon’s Den TV star and classic saloon racer, Theo Paphitis, and top classic saloon racing driver, Kerry Michael MBE, are also among the glittering list of honorary members. The Club is indeed blessed! At one recent Clubnight it was discovered that no less than five of the members dining together that night had competed on the 1979 International Welsh Rally together but possibly didn’t know each other then! From the world of rallying we have British Open champion and Ford World Championship co-driver Peter Davis. Jackie Ashby, former British Ladies Rally Champion is a member. So too Alison Evans, the only lady to finish the Monte Carlo Rally as a driver and a co-driver. Former British Open Champion and Audi works co-driver, Roger Evans too. Former BL works supported rally driver, Ian Giles, is the Club Presidente and there are many, many more………

CCCA racing along!

SPV Racing weekend AT the recent Clubnight there was a talk from the owner of the Le Mans LMP series SVP race team, Lars Lindberg, which was fascinating. SVP Racing are inviting CCCA members to their fun weekend and demonstrations of PitStops etc in Benalmadena Puerto on Saturday and Sunday August 12 and 13. The Ennstal Classic Rally, Austria WHILST mentioning some notable Club members they are not all retired! Two CCCA members were recently in Austria competing on the famous Enstall Classic Rally. These were Jo

Ramirez, driving a Porsche 911, and Clément Eijffinger in his very pretty Alfa Romeo. There will be photos from the event on this page. Both cars finished the event and this is what CCCA’s Jo Ramirez had to say about the Rally:“The Ennstal-Classic is without doubt one of the best, if not the best, Rally in Europe. Run in beautiful countryside around the river Ennstal, between the towns of Grobming and

the Schladming-Dachstein. A region crossing some of the greatest driving roads in the world. This year, on it’s 25th anniversary, they seem to have found the very best roads ever, with amazing scenery and almost no traffic at all, wherever you turn your head. It is like a post-card, and you want to stop and take a photo, waiting for Julie Andrews to come down the mountain singing ‘The Sound of Music’ ! “The Rally is run over three days

with around 450 km for each of the first two days, and a short run on the last day. Almost 270 cars were present from 1924 to 1972. There is a superb dinner party every night, in wonderful locations, and a gala dinner for the prize-giving night. Not only the cars are interesting, but also the people, and a wonderful atmosphere prevails at all times. For me, it is also very special because on this rally I met my partner, Ursula, who was, and still is, an unpaid worker for the Rally. “When someone enters the rally for the first time they will enjoy it so much they will want to keep going year after year. Stirling Moss has done them all, except this year due to poor health, I have done it for 15 years and counting and five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck, Alex Wurz, Rauno Aaltonen, Walter Rohl, Marc Surer and Dieter Quester are also regulars. Mark Webber and Neel Jani did it last year, and came back this year, and so many other personalities from different walks of life also enter and remain fascinated like Rowan Atkinson, Patrick Dempsey, Franz Klammer and many German and Austrian personalities from show business. Wolfgang Porsche, the owner of Porsche, and his son Ferdinand also have become regular participants since Porsche has become one of the Rally’s Sponsors. “As a competition, the Rally has a lot of special stages where you should keep to an average speed of about 50kph over the most twisty and ‘up and down’ road sections with photo cells hiding all along the stages. It is this which makes the Rally not only skilful but interesting, rather than boring timing controls like those on the Mille Miglia. “This year the Classic Car Club of Andalucia had two entries, myself and Clément Eijjfinger. I entered a Porsche 911 and Clément entered his beautiful Alfa Romeo. We finished almost together in the final classification! I hope we will both be back next year and maybe with others from the CCCA!” That’s it until next time! Next CCCA events are in September.

Luckily the forecast of 37 degrees was wrong and a pleasant breeze relieved the worst of the heat. They had a small field made up of teams of three with one four ball just to make scoring fun. With a scratch score of 72 for the game the winning team’s 73 was a magnificent effort. The second team had a creditable 69. Two teams vied for third with equal scores, but no amount of devious adjustments could get the four-man team into the frame. They just didn’t do enough with only one point on the 18th. Having bought eight bottles for two prizes for teams of four, they were able to add in a bottle left over from last week and make three prizes for the three balls, but still couldn’t win one. The two’s pot went to Ben Bliem for his ‘two‘ on the 5th.
