Woman kidnapped and killed by ex-partner Household name By Matthew Elliott A young woman was found murdered in a ditch, after her ex-boyfriend was discovered hanged in a greenhouse. All the evidence suggests that the man beat his former partner to death, drove her body out to the fields by Al Alquian, Almeria, and then killed himself. Farmers entering the greenhouse on Monday morning (April 10) found 29year-old Andrei, a man of Romanian descent, hanged from a rope tied to a metal beam among the tomatoes. He was shirtless, with blood covering his body and jeans. They alerted the National
Police, who conducted a search of the area during which they found the badly beaten body of Andra Violeta, 25. Her mother identified Andra’s body from her clothes and a tattoo on her leg. She had been reported missing by her father on Sunday after she failed to show up for a family dinner. Earlier that day they had heard her car speed off violently from
the family home and grew increasingly concerned. When they called her mobile, Andrei answered and said that their daughter was upset and didn’t want to speak with them before abruptly hanging up. Her family believe that Andrei kidnapped their daughter and may even have had an accomplice since he had no driving licence. Andra had broken up with
her partner two months previously after learning that he had spent time in prison for a violent robbery. There was no history of domestic violence but the jealous young man refused to accept the break up and began stalking her. She is the 21st woman to have been murdered by her partner in Spain this year alone as the country continues to combat machismo violence.

Dog cruelty POLICE rescued a dog found chained to the terrace of an abandoned Almeria house. The pit bull was apparently left to die by its owner but was spotted barking for help by a passerby.
Drag death A KITE SURFER drowned when his kite dragged him into dangerous currents at Almerimar beach in Almeria City, with a group of witnesses eventually pulling the 55-year-old’s lifeless body out of the water.

The one and only Raphael is in the middle of a spectacular world tour, performing songs from his acclaimed new album Infinitos Bailes (Infinite Dances). The iconic star, who has been serenading Spain and the world since the 1950s, has chosen Almeria to kick off the Spanish leg of his global tour. He will be performing at the Maestro Padilla auditorium on April 22 before travelling across the country. Raphael is the only Spanish singer to have sold more than 50 million records worldwide. Born in 1943 he is also an acclaimed theatre and television actor, married to an Italian aristocrat and even more popular in Latin America than he is in Spain. At the age of just nine, when he was already a five year veteran of the stage, Raphael was named the best child singer in Europe. He represented Spain twice at the Eurovision Song Contest and sings in Spanish, English and Italian. Tickets can be purchased for this very special show at Raphael’s website or on Ticketmaster. Highway help PLANS to dot the A-92 around Almeria with tourist friendly road signs have been given the green light. Local politicians have succeeded in convincing the powers that be that the highway is essential to help tourists find their way to some of the region’s most iconic destinations. The road is used by thousands of tourists each year travelling from Granada or the Costa del Sol to Almeria Province. With tourist friendly signposting, including helpful advice in English, scattered along the highway, Almerian officials believe they will attract even more guests. The A-92 is one of the busiest roads in Andalucia but has remained woefully under signposted despite heavy traffic and increasing tourist numbers.

Evil stepmother A WOMAN who burned her six-yearold stepson with hot knives has been sentenced to 21 months in prison. During a year of sadistic abuse she regularly beat, insulted and even bit the boy while his father was at work. An Almeria court heard how the child lived in a state of permanent terror, attacked without warning or reason by the 37-year-old. Her favourite technique was heating knives and branding the boy’s feet, a practice she began when he just four and she was newly wed to his father. It was only when a school teacher saw his wounds that the abuse became clear. She took the youngster to doctors who uncovered dozens of other injuries, including a burn blister that needed urgent medical intervention.

Millions have now viewed videos of the Full Monty protest strip which has gone viral on social media and even featured on national television. Demanding more investment in public schools, some 70 teachers from across the province, flung off their clothes in a city bar with Joe Cocker’s ‘You can leave your hat on’ blaring in the background. Now the late March spectacle is encouraging other stripteases across Spain as teachers throughout the country fight budget cuts and staff shortages. Public protests are already being planned for Almeria after the bravado courted plenty of public attention, but little political action.

A RECORD number of international visitors flew into Spain during 2016, and more than 80 per cent touched down at one of operator AENA’s 46 airports. Last year 75.6 million tourists visited the country, with 60.6 million travelling by plane. Spain remains among the world’s top holiday destinations for UK travellers, as more than 17.8 million holidaymakers arrived last year, with 11.4 million from France and 11.2 million from Germany comprising the three key markets. Spanish airports registered two million flights last year, a 7.5 per cent rise on 2015, and the total volume of passengers increased by 11 per cent compared to the previous 12 months. Madrid and Barcelona, historically Spain’s rival cities, remain the busiest airports and intercontinental hubs. Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat airports are ranked fifth and sixth in the EU in terms of passenger numbers, behind London’s Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Schipol in Amsterdam, and Germany’s Frankfurt Airport. Petty differences reported THE huge gulf between the average expat treatment of animals and pet owner behaviour across Spain has been exposed by an alarming report from the Veterinarian College of Almeria (COLVET). Vets have warned that in most municipalities in Almeria owners do not comply with important pet protection regulations. There are 103 municipalities in Almeria and only 26 have signed health and census agreements with COLVET. The agreements are crucial in identifying animals and providing them with the best veterinary care possible.

Once one of the main seats of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Toledo as the capital of Castile-La Mancha was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. ETA finally disarms for all WHILE Britain suffered the attacks of the IRA, around 800 deaths in Spain have been caused by Basque terrorist group ETA. Over a period of 40 years the organisation was also believed to have injured thousands of people and whilst it initially attacked politicians and police officers, it soon transferred its attacks to areas where tourists flocked. In the same way that Tunisia and Turkey have lost thousands of visitors due to recent Daesh activity, Spain saw similar losses when the ETA attacks were at their height. The past few years have seen a major softening of the position of ETA, brought about in part by the success that French and Spanish police have had in arresting militant members. In 2011, it declared a permanent truce with Spain, but the group still maintained its arms. However, the group has now publicly confirmed that it has ‘disarmed,’ so at least there is one piece of positive news in what continues to be a world still suffering from conflict between groups with differing ideals and aims.

Family of cancer boy Leo the Lion plan their return to Spain BRAVE cancer-fighter fouryear-old Leo Bermejo from Almeria is more than half way through his 31 sessions of proton beam therapy in Oklahoma. The proton treatment in the States follows Leo’s fourth brain tumour operation in the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in the UK. The sessions, which are given Monday to Friday, have gone to plan and mum, Karen, has announced the family has booked flights to leave Oklahoma on April 27. Speaking exclusively to the Euro Weekly News from the States, mum Karen said: “Leo finishes treatment on the April 21 but we need to go a few days later in case he has complications.” She also revealed that the family received a generous donation specifically to take the children on a holiday after Leo’s treatment has finished in Oklahoma.
The family has booked to go to Toronto where most of Karen’s family live for five days before returning to Spain in early May. Then Leo will begin oral chemotherapy before having a crucial MRI scan back at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital on Merseyside. Mocked in translation By Matthew Elliott DEMANDS to include Carboneras in the name of the Natural Park Cabo de Gata-Nijar have already invited ridicule. Socialist councillors support the move, reported in last week’s EWN, by the PP-led executive, but claim their proposal includes information on the natural park which was just copied and pasted from Wikipedia. The call centres on the fact that a substantial proportion of the world famous Cabo de Gata natural park is actually in Carboneras. Yet only Nijar, which contributes less space, is recognised in the official name and enjoys the resultant recognition. The PP presented their demand as a bold new move. But the Socialists pointed out that they’ve made the call in 2010, but have been ignored. They also evaluated the proposal and found it to be a word for word, graphic for graphic, literal copy of the national park’s Spanish Wikipedia page, which was last properly updated in 2008.

Red Cross hits breaking point By Matthew Elliott THE Spanish Red Cross has warned that it is being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of refugees arriving on the shores of Almeria. With just three months of 2017 gone by they have already attended to more than 1,000 people who have arrived on 40 different boats. By April last year the figure was just 183 people on 16 boats. This year has seen a 500 per cent increase and th e re are c o u n tles s th o usands relying on shelter and

The information centres can be found in Aguamarga, Las Negras and San Jose. The y a re ope n e a c h da y from 10a m to 3pm until Monday April 17. Helpful officials will direct people to beaches, museums, nature trails, hotels, cliffs and, of course, the volcanoes. They will provide a font of wisdom on local cafés, bars, tourist attractions and cultural expeditions. Nijar ha s s pe nt the pa s t fe w weeks frantically scrubbing and repairing its beaches in time for the Easter rush.
THE city flag waved at half mast as Almeria mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco declared two days of official mourning for the three youngsters burned alive in a horrific cave fire. Condolences have poured in from across the country as the city recovers from the April 3 blaze and police continue their investigation.

Manslaughter charges against some of the five teenage suspects remain a distinct possibility. One, aged 17, remains in custody. Another minor is also being questioned. Three have been allowed home. Their stories on how the fire, which killed a 21-year-old man and two young girls, 12 and 15,
came to start are ‘contradictory’ according to initial police reports. The trio were trapped in a La Molineta cave, unable to escape as a burning sofa blocked their path at around 8pm that evening. The only other exit was barricaded with a large rock at the popular teenage hang out spot. Police are taking a witness statement from one man who appears to have escaped the fire and run for help before the flames grew too large. They are working on the hypothesis that someone lit the sofa with a cigarette lighter and the situation quickly spun out of control. Other flammable materials around the area, also used as a dump, fanned the flames and produced toxic smoke. Police seem certain that none of the suspects acted maliciously, but their response to the fire will be crucial in determining what, if any, criminal charges they face.

The UK government’s Spring Budget introduced the ‘Overseas Transfer Charge’ – an immediate tax on certain transfers to offshore pension schemes. Previously, expatriates could move UK pension funds into a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) without paying UK tax. This applied regardless of residency or where your QROPS was based, unless your total funds exceeded the lifetime pension allowance (currently £1 million). Since 9th March, however, under certain circumstances the UK taxman can automatically claim 25% of funds being transferred – of any value. Who will this affect? The good news is that most expatriates in Spain will be unaffected. You will not be liable if both you and your QROPS are in the European Economic Area (EEA), or you are both based in the same country. Currently, the EEA includes all 28 EU member states (incorporating Gibraltar) plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. So generally only those moving UK pensions to excluded jurisdictions in which they are not resident – like Switzerland, Guernsey or Monaco – face liability. Don’t lose a quarter of your pension pot to the UK taxman
By Gerald Turner, Partner, Blevins Franks remain taxable by HMRC for five full tax years. So if your circumstances change to bring you in line for the transfer tax, you could still face a 25% tax bill on the transferred value. This could happen, for example, if you become tax resident in a non-EEA area within five tax years of transferring. It could also apply if you move funds from a QROPS to another scheme (an
‘onward transfer’) that does not meet the criteria for tax-free transfers. Other than being based outside the EEA, a pension scheme could invite tax penalties for allowing members to access their funds under the UK age limit of 55. Note that the five-year clock starts ticking from 5th April following the transfer date. This means that the liability period can actually be closer to six years for transfers made on or just after 6th April in any given year. Why consider a QROPS? Expatriates transferring to a QROPS can potentially enjoy significant tax advantages and flexibility over UK pensions. Funds in a QROPS are sheltered from UK taxation on income and gains. Also, they will no longer count towards your lifetime pension allowance (LTA), enabling unlimited growth without attracting
the 55% or 25% LTA tax penalties. Another advantage concerns estate planning. While many UK pensions are payable only to your spouse on death, QROPS offers flexibility to include other heirs and roll across generations. QROPS may also provide greater investment diversification compared to UK pension schemes, and more freedom to vary your income and hold savings in multiple currencies. This can potentially insulate pension income from volatility in the Pound and the Euro – especially important during current Brexit uncertainty. While your pension income may still be taxed in Spain, with good planning you can usually set up your QROPS to be highly tax-efficient. However, transferring a UK pension is not suitable for everyone and differences between QROPS providers and jurisdictions could affect the tax benefits. There may be alternative
investment structures offering expatriates the same, if not better, benefits to a QROPS. In any case, it is important to take regulated, personalised advice to protect your pension savings from scams and unsuitable investments. Carefully explore your options and consider acting now – before Brexit triggers further changes – to secure the retirement lifestyle of your choice in Spain. El Eyesore saga wraps up THE group behind the notorious EL Algarrobico hotel, named one of the ugliest in the world by The Telegraph, has no right to claim €70 million compensation for its demolition. That is the latest verdict from the Andalucian Consultative Council (CCA) which firmly backs the government in the bitter legal battle. Ruling that Azata del Sol, which built the infamous Carboneras eyesore, knew full well that construction breached strict coastal protection laws, the CCA claims the company doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on. Since demolition was finally achieved after almost a
decade of legal wrangling, Azata has demanded to be fully compensated for the expense of half building the 411-room blemish on the gorgeous Cabo de Gata landscape.
It is unlikely to be the final nail in the coffin for the saga.

State budget slashed THE Spanish government has slashed its 2017 investment budget for Almeria by 80 per cent. Instant outrage accompanied Madrid’s decision, described as a huge slap in the face to the province. A new draft law presents a total infrastructure budget for Almeria of just €39.7 million. In 2016 it was €200 million. Even more shockingly, this year ’s purse is the lightest since the euro was introduced in 2002. The budget cut is so severe that it amounts to spending of just €56 for each Almeria resident, down from €291 last year, or €311 in 2015. Leader of Almeria’s business confederation Asempal, Jose Cano Garcia, said that not even in his worst nightmare could he have imagined such a scenario. PSOE Socialist Party leader in Almeria, Sonia Ferrer, called for mass protest arguing the budget paints a bleak picture of Almeria’s future and betrays Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s contempt for the province. Fury is widespread among all sectors. Agricultural unions have said it is shameful to treat the ‘orchard of Europe’ with such scant disregard, especially when there is dire need for improved irrigation infrastructure. Business leaders who have spent recent weeks vigorously campaigning for a new high speed railway from Almeria to Murcia were staggered by the news. Already reeling from the announcement that there will be no railway investment until 2019, they discovered there will be no likely work on high speed connections until 2025. Train lines aren’t the only victims. Also off the agenda is a much-needed project linking the A-7 to the A-92 in Viator. Investment in roads, desalination plants, tourism infrastructure, irrigation and prisons will also take a serious hit as Madrid tightens the purse strings.

Safer €50 banknote issued
Increase in tourist spending A REPORT issued by Spanish tourist organisation Exceltur confirms that tourism income has grown in the first quarter of 2017. The bulk of the growth is driven by visitors from overseas and the Brexit result doesn’t appear to have discouraged British visitors nor is it likely to this year. Numbers of foreign visitors have increased and hotel demand has also increased allowing for owners to increase prices and profits. Whilst the strength of the external market has grown, Spanish holidaymakers are flying internally less often and are also spending less in hotels whilst looking more to make bookings in rental properties. It is forecast however that the situation will improve in the second quarter as bookings for Holy Week (Semana Santa) were very strong and the most popular areas for the major increase in tourism generally are considered to be Andalucia, the Canaries and Madrid.

Spain facing costly EU fines THE Spanish government knows it has a very short time before it will be fined by the EU for not passing the ‘Stevedore law.’ Minister of Public Works, Íñigo de la Serna has now presented a new plan which whilst not totally in accordance with government expectation may save it from an immediate €23 million fine plus a daily penalty of €134,000. The European Union decreed that the stevedores were operating a ‘closed shop’ within Spanish ports and the government tried to agree new terms with the various unions and other political parties as it proposed major changes in employment status. It was over this draft law that the government lost its first major vote when opposition parties voted against it and political partner Ciudadanos decided to abstain. In a press conference held in Barcelona, the minister made it clear that the compromise law had to be pushed through parliament quickly or else these penalties would be enacted. Having escaped an even larger fine for missing budget targets, the government wants to ensure that it is complying with EU regulations over this particular matter which if allowed to continue unresolved could cost the nation €4 million each month.
And the acronym of the issuer, the ECB, appears in nine linguistic variants, instead of the initial five. The €50 is the most used bank note in the euro zone, where there are more than 8,000 million, which represents 45 per cent of the total bank notes in circulation.
This change is welcomed by many as the existing €50 note is the most regularly counterfeited and a regular miscreant in Girona has just been arrested with material from which fake notes with a face value of €450,000 could have been made.
Shopping centres proving to be attractive investments By John Smith IT is not only the Russians who are looking to invest in commercial property in Spain but shopping centres are now back to being big news. Malls and centres around the world are attracting big investors as well as major retailers and of course shoppers to facilities which are often out of town, but also in such prime areas as Barcelona and Madrid. One of the main attractions of a shopping centre is that it can often be built on ‘virgin’ land with plenty of easy access and parking and the very large players such as Inditex, Mango and El Corte Ingles can actually dictate the size and position of their favoured stores. THE European Central Bank (ECB) has released a new version of the €50 bank note with more security measures that will help prevent counterfeiting. The new bank note that came into circulation on April 4 is a slightl y d i ff e r e n t c o l o u r a n d h a s b e e n manufactured on a firmer and more resistant paper and incorporates a hologram. And when you turn it, the silver band on the right shows the value of the note and the euro symbol (€). It is very easy to check a real euro bank note by using the simple FEEL, LOOK and TILT method. A special printing process gives the banknotes their unique FEEL. LOOK at the banknote against the light. The portrait window and watermark as well as the security thread become visible. TILT the banknote. The silvery stripe reveals a portrait of Europa in a transparent window and the emerald number displays an effect of the light that moves up and down.

Speaking at the Bank’s Annual General Meeting held in Santander she explained that 2016 had brought new challenges for the economy and for the banking sector but the group had performed very well. It wants to ensure that its 190,000 staff, 125 million

customers and four million shareholders all benefit from the strength and the success of the bank which has reported a profit of €6.2 billion for 2016. Thanks to this performance achieved despite financial
problems in China, Brexit uncertainty in the UK, elections in Spain and the USA and political turmoil in Brazil, profits were up by 4 per cent and if it had not been for currency fluctuations the true profit would have been even greater. As a reward to shareholders therefore and with their approval, the 2017 dividend will be increased by 5 per cent per share to 22 cents and the board expects this positive financial situation to continue into 2018.
Spain tops world tourism report SPAIN tops a tourism competitiveness report ahead of its European neighbours. The recently published World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 shows that the top three destinations are Spain, France and Germany with Japan rising to fourth place. With tourism accounting for 10 per cent of both global GDP and global employment it is one of the most important growth areas in the world today and contributes huge amounts of money, directly and indirectly to almost all economies. The bulk of the most successful destinations are those with advanced economies, whilst Asia in general is becoming increasingly more important not just as a destination
but also as more of its inhabitants travel further afield and India has experienced a huge growth in popularity. Even though world trade has slowed down due to protectionism, this doesn’t appear to have had any negative affect on tourism and indeed the enjoyment people have from travelling to new countries and cultures has led to a continued and steady growth. The World Economic Forum produced the report in collaboration with its data partners Bloom Consulting, Deloitte, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the UNWTO and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) so findings are likely to be viewed as being accurate.

David Frost once asked this much maligned brilliant politician, why h e d i d n ’t l i k e b l a c k p e o p l e ? Powell then asked him to name one example or occasion he had made such a statement. Frost of course could not. Powell was merely anti immigrant, stating that our infrastructure, culture and resources would not be able to cope if vast numbers of immigrants were continually allowed to enter the UK unchecked. The fact that most
immigrants of the day happened to be black, was totally irrelevant. Frost was subsequently humiliated and his credibility sorely dented. Well far from me to compare myself with such a great exponent of prescience as Mr Powell, but I am of exactly the same ilk. I may have strong anti views to certain cults, attitudes or religious interpretations, but I don’t p e r s o n a l l y c a r e w h a t c o l o u r, creed or nationality anyone aspires to. In any event, as a Spiritualist, I believe we have to manifest in anything from five to eight hundred lifetimes, so we will have to experience all the lessons of the human spirit anyway, ie the next reincarnation could find me e m e rg i n g a s a d e p r i v e d b l a c k child during an African drought! So not only do I object to being regarded a racist, I consider it a personal affront of my beliefs to be even considered as

D JUAN RIBO was renting my brother’s large old house just up the road from me. He not only was a diplomat but also seemed to know anyone that walked on earth and had something worthwhile to say. He knew everything about everything and everybody too. So, when he asked me if I would like to ride along to Madrid with him I jumped at the chance. What better way to prove he didn’t know the whole world. During the long drive we had light conversation. It was there I hoped to spring the trap. Did he know the minister of agriculture, the one in the papers recently. “Of course” he replied; which I naturally expected. Then he disappointed me by blurting, “we drive right by his office to get to my house, I’ll stop and you can meet him and ask him
what you want.” I guess I was going to find out early just how much Don Juan really knew. Within an hour we were there and went directly into the ministry stopping only for the secretary to be informed of our presence. Naturally, she enquired about our appointment which Don Juan shrugged off nonchalantly saying, “just tell him Juan Ribo is here to see him.” Within seconds the man I had seen on TV all week long burst forth from his office bear hugging D Juan. My eyes fell from my head and I became speechless. I felt ill. This most gracious man did know everyone, seemingly. And I, an utter commoner wanted him to fail. We arrived at his house, he had a cook and maid. I was directed to a bedroom, told to deposit my things as we were off for beers and tapas. “Rickey,” D Juan pronounced, “I have a diplomatic dinner tonight so cannot be a gracious host, but I have asked my son Juan to take you to the theatre. Do you know him?” I had met his son back in Mojacar, he was a movie actor, in fact,

the heart throb of Mexico. Boy did I feel sorry for him, getting loaded with a country bumpkin from Iowa. The evening went according to plan until young Juan suggested we go to the favourite actors bar and participate in saving the world, rewriting the play and critiquing each actor’s role. It was near midnight and I had nothing else to do. Juan introduced me to the various actors that had performed and we formed a circle to chat. No one tried to be ‘on stage’ or grand. The egalitarian trust amongst those usually yearning for the spotlight was impressive. Drinks followed and the conversation was never dull. Then it happened, at well after 1am the main bar door swung open and there stood none other than the great poet Rafael Alberti. A hush fell over the room and the circle parted like the Red Sea did for Moses. He casually stepped in as if we had all been waiting for him. A large jar of Sangria appeared from the bar with ample glasses and a night to remember was to start.

The Treaty of Rome CARSTEN THORBOLD says there is nothing to celebrate but there is. If we go back 50 years to the original treaty we would see a trading agreement between the countries ‘The Common Market.’ If that agreement was still going there would have been no Brexit. Good old Leapy LEAPY, it is the weekly anticipation of your column that gives me the energy to bend down each Thursday to pick up the paper. You haven’t said much about Brexit recently so I wanted to run this past you.
I think that TM is playing a very clever double game here. By going down the Brexit road she satisfies all the Brexiteers but in the end if she can’t get a good deal she will just say ‘sorry chaps I tried but in the end we had to stay,’ and everybody is happy ever after. Do you remember the EWN front page a couple of weeks ago about the damage fruit growing is creating to the water supply? I wrote to ‘have your say,’ I agree with your headline ‘Rivers at Risk.’ It is an absolute disgrace river water is to be diverted from tourist and expat swimming pools and wasted on farmers growing food.’ It did not get printed... a bit too sarky perhaps? Dodgy walk I HAVE just taken my first stroll along the beach board-
walk from Los Alamos towards Malaga with my son. On our way back, he chuckled as a bronzed naked man ran past us with a dog. Unfortunately we caught up with him by the beginning of the golf course and he was lying in the sand right next to the boardwalk, naked and very obviously masturbating for all to see. Next was an old man urinating whilst standing on the boardwalk but clearly wanting people to see his member as they passed him. There were lots of people, young and old and families on bikes to witness this. Perhaps your reporters should walk there some time and help put a stop to such lewd and obscene behaviour before more people are offended as I was this afternoon. Perhaps you should print a warning in your paper next week so people know what to expect. I most certainly will not be returning! Helen, Malaga
Fly tipping THIS may be a bit simplistic and I am probably stating the bleeding obvious, but, it seems to me, the reason ‘Mr Smith’ fly tips is because of the very high charges required in order to dispose of rubbish legally. If charges were dropped there would be no need to fly tip and ‘Mr Smith’ could sleep easy in his bed at night. Do the faceless ones who imposed these charges assume that if they discourage ‘Mr Smith’ from getting rid of his rubbish legally that a rubbish fairy will come along and magic it away? By scrapping these charges, councils would save money by not spending large amounts clearing the countryside of rubbish which still has to be disposed of. Ramble over, Keep the Faith. REGARDING Mr Fresham’s letter: You obviously do not or cannot read a Spanish newspaper nor listen to the Spanish radio. Spain’s OK... Not in my book regarding animal welfare. Literally thousands of Galgos/hunting dogs in Spain, when the hunting season ends, are either hanged in the woods, thrown down wells or taken into the wilderness to die of hunger. In Mallorca last year a man killed his horse - beating it over the head with an iron bar because it didn’t win its trotting trace. I’m a volunteer for the Centro Canino Refuge in Mallorca and have experienced the rescue of injured animals. Times have changed and attitudes too with education and the awareness that all creatures know pain, anxiety, fear, as well as joy and well-being. In the hospital grounds in Mallorca a dog was found living and sleeping there. They told me he’d followed the ambulance when his owner was brought in and then died. The dog would not leave. sleeping patterns. Whilst normally getting around the same amount of sleep as the others, they would often wake up regularly throughout the night. Meanwhile, a study has suggested that sleeping less than five hours a night makes you twice as likely to develop prostate cancer.

Budget increases for Spanish health THE Spanish Government is increasing its budget for health by 2.3 per cent. The multi-million euro budget was delivered to the President of the Congress of Deputies, Ana Pastor, relating to healthy policies for 2017 within the Ministries of Health, Social Services and Equality.

Within the plans, a series of actions and endowments have been announced such as an amount of €4 million, which is earmarked for actions to tackle rare diseases and health strategies and to finance health programmes. Budgets have been announced for the prevention and control of AIDS and other STIs; as well as the improvement of Health Information Systems and the development of digital public systems. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products has a budget of €46 million; €16 million for actions in food security within

Wine’s flavour is formed in the brain A REPORT suggests that wine could give your brain a work out. A leading neuroscientist believes that drinking a glass of wine sparks a reaction in the sensory and emotional parts of the brain and it is this brain activa-
tion that actually constructs the taste of the wine. The neuroscientist believes the flavour is constructed in the brain but is also impacted by the drinker’s emotional connection to the wine as it conjures up memories and emotions.
Factors such as gender, age and even the genetic make-up of saliva can impact how wine tastes, in a term called ‘neurogastronomy’ which describes how the brain creates the perception of flavour.
Diabetes is a chronic illness which overweight and obese people are more likely to develop, regardless of how many sweets or cakes they eat. Usually it can be kept under control with pills, daily exercise and diet and insulin is kept for the most severe cases. - So will I be on a diet for the rest of my life? Yes, in that you will have to learn to follow a correct, balanced diet as this is an important part of treating diabetes. - Will I have to stop drinking alcohol too? You can drink without overdoing it. Two glasses of beer or wine (preferably red) are fine but stronger drinks should be left for special occasions. - I’ve heard it’s hereditary. Will my children get it too? There is indeed an inherited genetic predisposition, yet weight is a more important factor. It’s very rare for people who aren’t overweight to develop this type of diabetes. - I’ve heard diabetes can lead to other health problems. What are they and
how can I avoid them? Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness which can cause inflammation of the arteries. This can lead to eyesight problems, kidney problems, affect nerves and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The best way to reduce these risks is to keep up treatments, diet and exercise to keep your diabetes under control. You should also stop smoking and keep an eye on your cholesterol and blood pressure levels. A specialist in internal medicine can help you control all these factors. - I didn’t notice any symptoms before my diagnosis. Are there any warning signs? Diabetes is tricky as there are often no symptoms initially. When they do appear they can range from a dry mouth, extreme tiredness, frequent urination and frequent infections to those of complications such as a heart attack or stroke. If you have any symptoms something is amiss you should consult your specialist in internal medicine.

CHILDREN’S PROCESSION: Doing themselves proud.
A mini Easter HUNDREDS of Nijar schoolchildren celebrated their very own traditional Easter procession. More than 180 little rascals aged between just three and five from San Isidro marched proudly past thousands of cheering family, friends and neighbours. Fully decked out in religious attire, singing songs and beating drums they carried a throne of the Virgin Mary that was handmade by a company of student grandmothers. The costumes were also homemade and the pupils did themselves proud.
Colours of passion exhibition A STUNNING photo exhibition has opened during Semana Santa in Albox. ‘Colores de Pasion’ showcases beautiful images taken by fine local photographers of the village’s Easter celebrations, widely considered among the most spectacular in Spain. The exhibition closes on Good Friday, April 14 so be sure to get there before it’s too late! Are you a Dirty Beer Drinker? GOOD FOOD, GOOD WINE AND GOOD FRIENDS WITH
GARRY WAITE ON’T GET ME WRONG! I’m not accusing beer drinkers of being ‘dirty’! We are actually talking about the beer itself. I am not a beer drinker as such, but admit in the summer to be able to sink a couple of draught Mahou or Alambra and watching the cooling effect of the condensation running down the side of the glass. On the few occasions that I have ventured back to the UK the first thing that my dear late father and I would do was to go to a local country pub where he would have a small ‘boy’s beer’ - obviously the least potent on offer, normally a pale ale type beverage!! - and I would go for one of the highly popular selections of real ales now in abundance especially in the South West of England. Two pints of that - in a mug not a sleever - and that would be my craving for ‘English Beer’ satisfied and would probably be my last visit to a pub that trip! But a recent report discovers the following little known facts that have further fuelled the ‘North-South’ divide!!
Pubs in the city of Bath serve the least clean beer in the UK, while the South West is the worst region for unclean beer lines (with 40 per cent of lines unclean).

As a trainee in the UK we had to clean pipes after the weekend which was done on a Monday morning by the staff. Over here the cleaning is undertaken by the suppliers of which ever beer that the establishment uses. Obvious the light beer/ lager style that we serve in Spain does not create as much grime as a real ale, so greater care has to be given to the great British beer!!
Whichever way you like to drink it - you pays your money and makes your choice.
Meanwhile, Newcastle and Warrington are where the cleanest beer can be found, with the North East the cleanest region with only 27 per cent of beer lines adjudged to be unclean. These bombshell findings came into the public arena thanks to the findings of the Beer Quality Report 2017. Apparently, researched by that internet of things provider Vianet, that monitors the flow of beer through lines in pubs across the country, together with beer quality accreditation and training firm, Cask Marque. Any bar man/pub landlord should know that the cleaning of pipes and equipment should take place every seven days.
THERE’S PLENTY MORE FISH IN THE SEA, as the age old expression goes!! But I never wanted to go out with a fish!! But in reality there is ‘something fishy going on in the state of’... well in this case - Norway! Three fishing areas in the North Sea have seen haddock sustainability downgraded after a fall in stocks but the downgrading of haddock does not apply to any Norwegian fishing grounds. Norway is home to one of the largest haddock stocks in the world, but this is no coincidence. It takes a lot of hard work and a strict quota system to maintain. Haddock has been on the International Fisheries watch list for many years as it has been overfished from the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. With the expansion of fish farming things have taken an upward swing. Thanks to Norway’s scientifically managed fisheries, haddock stocks re-

Another fact that confirms what many visitors coming to the UK unaccustomed to Britain’s Real Ale Drinking Culture know, is in many cases the beer is served too warm. In other findings, one in four pubs were found to have major temperature issues with 6 per cent of all pints served too warm with the West Midlands most likely to keep their beer at the right temperature and Scotland was the region with the highest percentage of beer served too warm! CALVADOS IS ONE OF THOSE LIQUEURS, (or is it a brandy?) that is divisive. Similar to the age old quip about Marmite, you either drink it or avoid it. Although, I have never seen an accolade such that has been levelled at my featured drink this week. THE WORLD’S BEST CALVADOS 2017. The story of Drouin Calvados started around 1960. Apart from a love of good food and fine wine, there was nothing to suggest that Christian Drouin the elder, an industrialist from Rouen, was destined for a career in spirits. Despite this, he purchased a farm in Gonneville with one aim - to produce the very best spirit he could from the cider apple orchards. Fast forward almost 60 years and his Calvados’ are now some of the most sought after and awarded in the world with the 1989 being the pick of the bunch. For a Calvados to be classified as ‘Pays d’Auge,’ it must adhere to various rules, including being double distilled and being aged for a minimum of two years in oak barrels. It is also limited in the production area to the east end of the department of Calvados between Caen and Rouen. Due to this permitted delimited area, production and availability is always limited. However, that hasn’t stopped it picking up the award for ‘The World’s Best Calvados’ at the recent World Drinks Awards which is amongst the most coveted awards on the planet. To win this award is to be up there with the greatest achievements that any product can receive. The 1989 Pays d’Auge will now join an elite group of other Calvados’ to achieve such heights Tasting notes: “Restrained on the nose with baked apples and light vanilla notes. Almost lemon zest freshness. Lean and zesty with a sharpness of fruit. Well paired with pastry or crumble based desserts.” Oh well, I have always used Calvados to cook with. Hey Ho!

Only 30 per cent of the haddock we eat is caught from UK waters, therefore there is a constant need to source outside the UK to satisfy demand - 70 per cent comes from the Barents Sea (*) The Good Fish Guide, published by the Marine Conservation Society states: ‘Depending on how and where it’s caught, this species ranges from sustainable to unsustainable. Check individual options to make the best choice.’ Norway’s haddock stocks, all of which come from the North East Arctic, are classed as ‘good sustainable fish to eat’ by the Guide.

Town’s shock over death of Chacon A SENIOR Spanish politician with close ties to Olula del Rio tragically died at the age of just 46. Carmen Chacon, the former Defence Minister died from heart failure. She was the first female Defence Minister in history and seven months pregnant when she took on the job.
She was the first female Defence Minister in history. Though a native of Barcelona, Chacon regularly visited Olula del Rio where she had close family and friends. She attended her grandmother’s funeral in the town and chose it as the location to announce her candidacy for national office in 2012. Some violent memories NEWS that ETA, a Basque separatist group, has lain down its weapons has stirred violent memories in Albox and Oria. Two men from the Almanzora Valley were among eight Almerians killed by ETA during the guerilla war against the Spanish state. Tributes were paid to them as Spain woke to the news that the war with ETA was officially over. José Artero Quiles from Albox was executed by the
armed group in 1980, the only civilian from Almeria they killed. He ran a marble shop in the Basque Country selling material from Albox and refused to pay ETA’s revolutionary tax. He was shot eight times. Just two months earlier, 26year-old Guardia Civil officer Jose Castillo from Oria was assassinated during a bloody attack on a Basque police barracks involving hand grenades.
Into political exile FORMER mayor of Oria, Jose Perez Perez, has been found guilty of administrative malfeasance and banned from public office for 10 years. An Almeria court determined that the Socialist politician intervened to skew public contracts in the favour of acquaintances, knowing full well that he acted outside the law.

Round up of first quarter NEW data from the Spanish Real Estate Markets Index (IMIE) shows that house prices across Spain rose by 1.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2017, compared to the same period last year. The statistics were released by Tinsa which described them as hugely positive news for Spain’s continued progress. Director of research, Jorge Ripoll, did, however, point out that the market remains characterised by a selective recovery. He is referring to the extreme variation across regions which continues to dog the Spanish property market and make generalisations from average data of little relevance to particular areas. At opposite ends of the spectrum are Catalonia and Navarre which posted growth
of 7.5 per cent and decline of 5.6 per cent from January to March 2017. Madrid and the Canaries also saw strong increases, while Murcia and the Balearics posted substantial declines. The most expensive autonomous community in Spain is now the Basque Country which boasts avergage prices of €1,986 per square metre. Second is the Balearics at €1,870, while the cheapest region is Castilla-La-Mancha at just €786. Broken down to cities Barcelona and Alicante saw prices rise most, with respective increases of 12.1 and 11.7 per cent. In terms of affordability it takes a Balearic Islander 12.4 years earning an average salary to be able to buy an averagepriced home, and just 4.5 years for a Zaragoza resident.

DOG foods vary in quality and so do the companies that make them. For some companies quality is only a word, for others, it’s a way of life. Ultimately, the quality of a dog food is best measured by your dog. Evidence of this shows in how your dog performs on the food, and how he looks, feels and acts. At least 30 per cent of my clients, report an improvement in behaviour when they change their food. Not all dogs do well on a particular brand of food; some dogs simply do better than others.
Most foods are categorised as economy, regular, premium, super premium and performance. Regular and premium foods are not formulated like a super premium or performance food. Dogs have simple stomachs and short digestive tracts for digesting meat. They also lack the saliva enzyme amylase, which is necessary for pre-digesting starch. Dogs have adapted to foods with high vegetable protein levels, however they perform better when fed foods high in meat protein and animal fats. When checking the label of a super premium or performance food, an animal protein will be listed as the first or second major ingredient. These should include either chicken, or turkey meat, or poultry by-products. At least two sources of fat or oil should be included for adequate energy and essential fatty acids. Fat in food is the dog’s

source of energy. Animal fat contains essential and non-essential fatty acids as well as providing a highly digestible and easily metabolised energy source. Generally, poultry, turkey or chicken fat are higher in quality because they have more unsaturated fatty acids and are more digestible than animal tallow.
Vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, lecithin corn oil, wheat germ oil, sesame seed oil or linseed oil all contain high levels of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for dogs. These should be combined with animal fats for the best results for a glossy coat and soft pliable skin. Carbohydrates are the third
most important nutrient and ingredient class in modern super premium and performance foods. Simple carbohydrates in dog food come from quality sources like rice, oatmeal, corn or wheat. These are easily digested when properly cooked. Fibre, a complex carbohydrate is essential for proper digestion and stool formation.
Beet pulp and tomato promace are both high in fibre. Other sources of fibre include rice, soy hulls, oat hulls, wheat bran and peanut hulls. All these come from the external portion of the seed coat. These sources except peanut hulls have microscopic sharp edges, which can cause small cuts in the intestine. This reduces the intestine’s effectiveness in nutrient digestion. Peanut hulls on the other hand, have the potential of being contaminated with aflatoxins and should never be used in a quality dog or cat food. Vitamin and mineral fortification is an absolute necessity in nutritionally balancing any food for dogs. While the vitamins and minerals generally, make up less than 2 per cent of the total food by weight, they provide some of the most crucial nutrients. These include 12 to 16 vitamins and 15 to 25 minerals. Often there are more micro nutrients than major ingredients. Super premium usually features more than one source for each vitamin and mineral.

Record UK car sales CAR sale records were smashed in the UK as British drivers rushed to escape hefty new environmental taxes imposed on all new car purchases from April 1. Now only cars with absolutely zero emissions are exempt from the punitive tax that previously affected gas-guzzlers but not the average vehicle. The annual tax now stands at £140 (€164) for standard cars. Though surely not the sole reason, the increase precipitated a huge volume of sales in March as 562,337 new cars were registered more than in January and February combined. In 2016 a record 2.7 million cars were sold. March’s best seller was the evergreen Ford Fiesta which shifted 25,428 units, significantly more than the Focus at 17,119. Volkswagen, Vauxhall and Nissan are the nation’s three other favourite brands.

A force of nature THE world has a new fastest production car. The Bugatti Chiron has a theoretical maximum speed of almost 300mph. That monstrous figure is electronically limited to 261mph (420kph), a symbolic 3mph faster than its predecessor the Veyron. Just for kicks, the speedometer goes up to 500kph. Named after race driver Louis Chiron who, at 55 was the oldest man to ever race Formula One, the sleek £1.9 (€2.2) million package comes with an evolved 8.0 litre quad turbo W16 engine with a seven-speed twin clutch. It is not a hybrid. The Chiron can produce 1479bhp and 1180lb ft of torque. It can reach 186mph (300kph) from a standstill in 13.6 seconds, faster than a McLaren P1. Built largely from carbon fibre the Chiron weighs just 1,995kg and has five different dri-
ving modes - Auto, Autobahn for cruising, Handling for track works, Lift for speed bumps and Top Speed presumably for the Mojave desert. There are three turbos, four water pumps, 10 radiators, 16 cylinders, 32 fuel injectors and 60,000 litres of air pumping around each minute. There’s even a one carat diamond in the speakers. Only 500 Chirons are scheduled for production and 120 have already been snapped up despite the enormous asking price. Suzuki S-Cross SZ5 SUZUKI’S original S-Cross didn’t look as sharp or as classy as its main rival, the Nissan Qashqai. But now a new version of the S-Cross is available and Suzuki has addressed those styling issues. New S-Cross has a bigger, bolder and much more noticeable front end, giving the model greater road presence, and inside there is a softer feel and more classy look to the dashboard and upgraded fabrics for the seats. The revised styling comes together well and
widens the market for this type of car, which tends to appeal to more image-conscious buyers. Under the bonnet, the old 1.6 litre petrol engine has gone, replaced by turbocharged 1.0 or 1.4 litre units, with the smaller one offering less horsepower yet delivering better performance, and with reduced emissions and improved fuel consumption. The new 1.4 does better still in the pulling power stakes as well as offering 138 hp and a little more economy than the

previous 1.6 litre engine. There is also a 1.6 litre 118 hp diesel available, mildly modified from last time and with slightly improved emissions. It produces combined fuel economy of 24.3 kpl (68.8 mpg). Four wheel drive is available as an option with all the engines. S-Cross prices start at €17,583 (£14,999) for a 1.0 litre version that comes with Bluetooth, digital radio, air conditioning, alloy wheels, heated door mirrors and seven airbags. Mid-range models add satellite navigation, dual zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, rear privacy glass, bigger alloys and
LED headlights. The top-spec S-Cross SZ5 All Grip features extra kit including leather trim, heated front seats, large opening glass sunroof and alloy roof rails among an extensive standard features list. My SZ5 4x4 test model cost €26,786 (£22,849) and had the 1.4 litre engine and six-speed manual gearbox. The 0-100 kph time is a nippy 10.2 seconds and fuel economy is 17.8 kpl (50.4 mpg). The cabin is roomy front and rear and the 430 litre boot is a decent size and can be expanded to 875 litres by dropping the rear seats. I found the S-Cross very pleasant to drive - smooth, quiet and responsive, with composed cornering and a comfortable ride. What was especially impressive was its precise light-touch agility making it effortless to drive. Add that to its attractive new look and Suzuki’s excellent reliability record and it is clear the S-Cross is now a strong competitor in the expanding SUV sector.

New York, New York JUST one month after the 2017 Geneva Motor Show closed its gates, the motoring press is in New York City preparing for even more debuts and glimpses into what 2018 holds in store. The New York Motor Show runs from April 14-23 and is the 117th edition of the continent’s biggest motoring feast. A full preview is now available and shows that the show will keep true to its roots with a more American feel than its Swiss or French counterparts. There’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, the latest offroad beast to channel the advertising world’s inner Indian. It has a powerful 6.2 litre V8 engine with 707hp. If that’s not enough there’s the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, more lightweight than the Hellcat but with 800hp to satisfy power trippers. Another American classic in the mix is the Buick Regal TourX an estate car set to challenge Volvo and Audi for North American dominance and showing that SUVs aren’t always the best option for family drivers. The Range Rover Velar, a huge hit in Europe, will also make its play for the lucrative American big car market. Reasonably priced at around €40,000, it is already on sale in the States.

IT’S not often I’m left speechless, but that’s precisely what happened during a recent appointment with my gynaecologist in London. As soon as all the medical stuff was over, his next words were: “That novel of yours could have been about me!” As I said, I was speechless, having no idea he even knew about my first novel, The De Clerambault Code, let alone had read it or the others. (Every single one, as it turned out.) Anyway, just like the main character in it, he described how, over a period of several months, he too had been obsessively stalked by a patient who sent him aggressive emails ending up in blackmail.
Eventually, he referred himself to the General Medical Council - and was subsequently totally cleared by the medical tribunal. Phew, what a personal story, which hit the national headlines! Unfortunately, there wasn’t time to mention that I’d also been stalked in Los Angeles - an experience that resulted in the obsessive delusional relationship depicted in my novel. Nor that studying law there, specialising in criminal law, led to my growing interest in writing these psychological crime thrillers featuring investigative journalist Alice Myers (as you know, all profits to Costa del Sol Cudeca cancer charity), including the latest in the series scheduled for publication this summer. No time either to mention the colourful years I spent in LA. Apart from bit parts in movies (the English accent was wot dun it!) and, again through contacts, meeting famous actors - Paul Newman (those
eyes!), Harrison Ford and others there were also some dodgy moments. Like the morning when I rushed into Law School and a Tax Law Professor was shot dead right in front of me! This shortly after J D (Juris Doctor) Finals; I never did find out if he’d pissed off some former client or just a student with failing grades… Which reminds me, once one of my readers, a student, graciously offered to proofread my manuscript and pinpoint any errors in punctuation, spelling and style. Of course i spel perffecttly and theres never no punktuation, erors! so her job was like, :- easy! Hapy Easta! Badgers Bar Golf Society WEDNESDAY April 5 saw Badgers Bar Golf Society travel to Valle de Este resort, one of the society’s local courses. Always a tricky course players had to be at there best to come in with a good score. Jock Glynn blasted any theories out the water coming in with an unprecedented 43 points. Amigos Club de Bowling Cabrera Lawn championship event Bowls Club ON April 1 and 2 the fourth club championship of the Amigos Club de Bowling, based at the Almeria Tenpin Bowling Centre in Arboleas, took place. The event has been generously sponsored by Ibex Insurance since the club’s conception in 2013. This year proved to be the best yet with 34 entrants in the first round and the top 16 bowlers qualifying for the knockout stages. Bowlers were seeded on their scores in the first round. In order to qualify for the final 16 a score of 613 or over (including handicap) had to be achieved. This was 40 pins more than previous years. A wide range of ability from both sexes qualified from a 56 handicapper to a scratch bowler. The standard of bowling continued with some high scoring to qualify for the quarter-finals, semis and the final.
GREAT FINAL: Winner Malcolm (L) with Berni and Phil (R). Phil Taylor and Malcolm Rogers battled it out in the final with strike after strike throughout all three games. Culminating in Malcolm coming out on top with a scratch score of 678 (750 with handicap) and Phil shot 665 (713 with handicap). Spectators said afterwards it was by far the best final the bowling centre had seen since it
opened seven years ago. A contributory factor to such great bowing was the condition of the bowling lanes, so a big thank you must go to the centre’s manager Rafa and the mechanics that look after the lanes. Club chairman, Phil Taylor, thanks Berni Campbell of Ibex Insurance for again arranging sponsorship for 2017/18.
BETWEEN March 20 and 28 Cabrera Lawn Bowls Club held The Cyril Heath Handicap Singles Competition, the last competition in the calendar year. Matches were played throughout and culminated in the final which was held on March 28 between Paul Cartwright and Tony Wells. The winner was the first player to 21. Paul definitely started off the better and after 12 ends was 12-3 up. Tony however, being the competitive player he is, never gave up and clawed the score back to 17-10 in Paul’s favour after 19 ends. WORTHY WINNER: Paul Cartwright (L) and runner-up Tony Wells (R).
Paul had the bit between his teeth and wasn’t going to lose the final and eventually won 21-11 after 23 ends. Many congratulations to Paul and commiserations to Tony. A very good final enjoyed by the many spectators who watched.
