by Matthew Elliott After months on the run a fugitive linked to a sophisticated weapons-trafficking gang has been arrested in Motril. The career criminal, with a lengthy police record, is accused of illegally possessing firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition. The story began in February when a narcotics and arms dealing organisation was busted by National Police officers in various localities across Granada province. They uncovered thousands of bullets, six handguns and even an AK-47 assault rifle. Bulletproof vests, mock police uniforms, flashing police lights, anabolic steroids and almost £50,000 were also seized.

The criminal group was chiefly involved in the shipment of cocaine to Israel through couriers, and in the selling of artwork and luxury vehicles on underground markets across Europe and Africa. Acting on intelligence, police raided two further properties and discovered 600 marihuana plants and more weaponry, arresting a dozen suspects in the process. One, however, managed to escape the net and eluded capture until

this week. It took a huge intelligence operation by police to eventually secure their man. Agents painstakingly put together a picture of the syndicate’s chain of command, safe houses and modus operandi. They eventually discovered a hidden cache in the air vents of a public car park in Malaga City, with 1,000 bullets, a revolver and six hand guns. Following several months of investigations regarding the

The Local Police chief has announced a ‘quantum leap’ in the operational capacity of his squadron as more troops are set to join the force in 2017. The force’s evolution won’t exactly smash the fabric of space-time but will make a difference to officers who will have

more resources than ever at their disposal. Staff numbers will leap from 38-45, with three of the new additions being full-blooded lawmen. They represent the first proper additions since 2011 and chief Miguel Angel Garcia is optimistic that the force will soon boast 50 policemen. Another key development will be in resources. The squad will have another four vehicles at their disposal, three of which are

new. They will also get two breathalysers, a dramatic improvement on sharing one with Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria. New computer and office equipment will spruce up the force’s headquarters, while officers walking the beat will have new uniforms. The Local Police has now even launched its own Facebook page, a quantum leap of its own kind, where they can share their crime-fighting exploits.

TWO more banks have been targeted by thieves using highly explosive gas in a bid to blast open cash machines in Estepona. Both attacks in the early hours of Saturday 19 November, on the ATMs of the Banco Popular and Banco Santander, were unsuccessful. But the incidents mean the arrests carried out by police earlier this month did not catch every member of the gang suspected of involvement or another outfit is operating. Police have warned people not to approach the scenes of such attacks and have been forced to bring in officers specialising in the deactivation of explosive substances before a thorough examination of the area can be carried out by forensic science teams. In the second of the two incidents in the Benamara neighbourhood, the raiders were forced to flee the scene when a passer-by alerted police. They left before the gas, which has on occasions been pumped into the cash dispenser, could be ignited. Police previously arrested four men in connection with around 15 attacks on the

In a news conference they revealed the robbers got away with more than €70,000 but in the raids which ended with the arrests, detectives managed to recover about €40,000. Among the items seized by police were two hand grenades, supplies of vacuum-packed marihuana and oxyacetylene bottles.

The raids started in July at a toy store cash machine in Malaga’s Avenida de Velazquez. Branches of the Santander and Banco Popular were then hit with attacks in La Cala del Moral, Alhaurin el Grande, Monda, Marbella, Guaro, Ojen, Algarrobo and Mijas. Civil Guard Lt Col Jesús Esteban revealed two of the men

are British and in their 20s, while one has previous convictions related to the possession of explosives. One of the Spaniards is alleged to have supplied the Britons with the materials needed to carry out the raids. The cash proceeds from the raids are thought to have been used to fund drug dealing.

Bogus bobbies busted

JOINT OPERATION: Guardia Civil and National Police arrested nine Iranians.

By John Smith ACTING jointly, officers from the Guardia Civil and National Police have arrested nine related Iranians (four women and five men) in Benidorm who have been stealing goods, mainly from tourists, whilst masquerading as police officers. Working in pairs, with blue LED lights placed in their cars, the highly-mobile bandits targeted tourists in a range of towns in Malaga, including the

Costa Tropical, Sevilla, Cordoba, Alicante, Murcia, Valencia, Ciudad Real, Madrid and Barcelona, stopping them, frisking them and then often beating them up before stealing their valuables. They only targeted any particular area for a few days and changed cars on a regular basis in order to escape detection, but in the end the combined police forces found them in two properties in Benidorm where they were arrested. Large amounts of cash and

other valuables including watches and jewellery were discovered during the raids as well as three vehicles and now officers are attempting to find the victims of at least 15 violent robberies. The gang will be charged with belonging to a criminal group, holding false documents, robbery with violence, money laundering and in at least four cases, illegal entry into Spain with at least four detained in prison under instruction from the court in Denia.

The festival in honour of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception will be held from December 8-10, and will see a host of sports and other activities taking place throughout the neighbourhood, concluding with the spectacular burning of a ‘fireworks castle’ on Saturday December 10. Medina expressed her satisfaction with the plans, because “we are returning to these unique holidays, and I want to congratulate the Residents’ Association for their efforts, determination and the quality of the events that they have organised.” Salinas explained that the

Following a reception at the tourist board’s offices, the group took in the Palacete de la Najarra, the salt factory located in the ‘El Majuelo’ botanic and archaeological park, the San Miguel castle, the ‘Cueva 7 Palacios’ museum and the section of Roman aqueduct in La Carrera. Mysteries unveiled during Science Week By Matthew Elliott HUNDREDS of people participated in a hugely successful Science Week held by the Nerja Cave Foundation. Stretching from November 11-18 the event saw students, ecologists, families and local residents come along for a feast of insight, knowledge and understanding. Lucky guests were offered a guided tour through the famous caves where they learned about their formation over millions of years. Guides went into great detail explaining the key events, including huge earthquakes, which contributed to the caves’ unique geological make-up. Visitors also learned about the scientific team unravelling the mysteries of the underground labyrinth. They were treated to tours of the laboratory, weather station and library, gaining a unique insight.

NERJA CAVES: Millions of years of mystery. The Nerja Caves are one of the most fascinating places to visit in Spain. Comprising a series of caverns formed millions of years ago, they were inhabited by prehis-

toric humans until about the Bronze Age around 3,000 BC. They contain the world’s largest stalagmite, a rock formation which rises up from the floor.

Based in Roquetas de Mar, Almeria, the members allegedly travelled to different destinations, always at night, and cut through fences or broke down gates to get into farms. In an attempt to reduce agricultural thefts, the National Police force has upped the human and material resources used for surveillance and investigation of cases and includes regular helicopter patrols of rural areas in its routine.

ON Saturday November 26 at 7pm, the College of Physicians of Malaga plan to pay tribute to all of the health professionals and emergency services of the province of Axarquia, especially those who were on duty and volunteered to assist following the gas explosion in a café in Velez-Malaga in October. With nearly 100 injured, the streets were particularly

busy as the explosion occurred during the San Miguel Fair and in many ways, the city was lucky that more people were not killed or injured. The event will take place at the María Zambrano Foundation, Palacio Marques De Beniel, 1 in the Centre for the Study of Exile Velez-Malaga with the help and involvement of the city council.

Spain faces EU fine over lack of water treatment By Matt Ford SPAIN faces astronomical European Union (EU) sanctions of ‘at least’ €46.5 million after failing to provide wastewater treatment for 17 towns and villages, several of which are located on the Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical. The threat comes five years after the EU Court of Justice slammed Spanish authorities because there remained 37 municipalities with more than

dumping it into local rivers or the sea. “The lack of an adequate level of collection and treatment of wastewater poses significant risks to human health, inland waters and the marine environment,” reads their official stance on the matter. The European Commission has now tired of waiting for Spain to fix the problem, since 17 of the towns still have no treatment facilities and continue to pollute the environment. It is now requesting that a fine of €46.5 million be issued, plus additional charges of €171,217 per day should the required infrastructure not be in place by the date set for the judges’ second resolution. Locally, San Pedro de Alcantara, Estepona, Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and Nerja are the guilty parties, with the latter in particular pouring untreated

sewage into the sea with no prior filtering. Construction of Nerja’s treatment plant began in January 2014, but there have been a raft of delays and other obstacles which suggest that the operational target of mid-2017 is speculative at best. In Estepona, work began in 2010 at a projected cost of €30.1 million but the project remains in limbo due to a lack of funds, while completion of the lower Guadalhorce plant, intended to serve Coin, Alhaurin el Grande, Alora and Pizarra is unresolved due to ‘discussions’ between the Junta de Andalucia and Malaga City Council. Other offending municipalities in Andalucia include Matalascañas, Isla Cristina, Tarifa and Barbate, with the remainder in Galicia, Asturias, Valencia and the Canary Islands.

Painful Christmas IT’S a month until Christmas and whilst for many it’s a time to relax and enjoy the festivities, we shouldn’t overlook the problems some people face. One obvious problem for many expats in Spain is loneliness which is amplified at a time that perhaps used to be enjoyed with a partner and children. Often, people feel particularly sad at this time and find it difficult to summon up the courage to carry on. Loneliness is a scourge, especially for the elderly. There are charities that cater for senior citizens and can put individuals in touch with each other to make life a little easier. Companionship often makes a difference. Without wishing to preach, if any of our readers

have an elderly neighbour, a Christmas card or mince pie could help cheer them up. Another problem is alcoholism as booze is cheap here in Spain. As we get older we become less able to cope with alcohol which can turn the most pleasant person violent even though they regret it afterwards. What happens behind closed doors shouldn’t be ignored. Anyone being abused by an alcoholic or fears they are becoming one should seek help from organisations, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, which exist throughout Spain. Brexit role for courts deepens BREXIT PAGE By Matthew Elliott and Simon Firth

THE Scottish and Welsh governments will be allowed to dispatch lawyers to put forward their cases during the legal battle over who has the right to invoke Article 50 and formally begin Brexit negotiations. The UK government is appealing against the high court ruling that parliament must be given a vote on the matter, with the case due to go before the supreme court next month. Now the 11 supreme court justices have decided an already complex case will also involve the chief legal officers from the devolved governments. Prime Minister Theresa May’s executive protested against the idea and the influence of the Scottish government will it seems be limited to any areas of Scots law not already encompassed by the case. The Welsh input

The veteran victims’ rights campaigner Raymond McCord, whose son was murdered by the UVF, successfully argued that Northern Ireland could not be removed from the EU against the will of its people, 56 per cent of whom voted to remain in the EU. Meanwhile 60 Tory MPs have called on the government to quit the single market and customs union when it does finally leave the EU. The customs union allows members to trade without tariffs but stipulates common duties on goods coming into the union from non-member states. MP Suella Fernandes, who represents Farnham in Surrey, told the Daily Telegraph the referendum result had been “an instruction to untie ourselves from EU shackles and freely embrace the rest of the world.” In her most recent statements, Theresa May told business leaders she was aware “a cliff edge” approach to negotiations and their aftermath would be bad for British trade. Confederation of British Industry president Paul Dreschler said his members did not want a hard or soft Brexit, but a “smooth Brexit.”

Whiplash under the microscope ONE of the least attractive imports into the UK from America has been the incredible growth of ‘ambulance chasing lawyers’ and unscrupulous individuals who take advantage of slight accidents (or even stage them) in order to claim compensation for whiplash! Although the number of accidents in the UK has dropped in the past few years, claims for whiplash have increased more than 50 per cent and the amount of money paid out to claimants is believed to be one of the main reasons for car insurance costs to be as high as they are. Now the British government is looking into ways of policing these claims and is also considering putting an upper limit on the value of any payment that can be made. Since the average payment is currently just under £2,000 (€2,300) there could be considerable savings to the insurance companies, which they have undertaken to pass on to

promise that the government intends to keep and the only matter for discussion appears to be whether whiplash ceases to be a recognised injury for which any compensation is payable or if

there is to be a cap to allow a modest payment to be made to those who have sustained genuine, if transient, injury. There is no suggestion at this stage that this will be the thin

end of the wedge, with compensation for other more serious injury being reduced, but there may well be a table produced with suggested tariffs dependent upon the injury sus-

tained. It seems that apart from possibly a few lawyers, there is overall support for such a law which would be introduced by Justice Secretary Liz Truss. One additional option may be to increase, from £1,000 (€1,150) to £5,000 (€5,750), the amount that can be lodged in the small claims court for personal injury, thus speeding up the process as well as reducing overall costs. Another matter to be considered is the banning of cold calls and text messages from firms of lawyers and paralegals touting for accident business in the hope that it will also discourage what has been described as ‘crash for cash.’ These accidents often take place at roundabouts and are organised by gangs who cause the accidents with drivers of second cars acting as witnesses. The RAC supports the proposals in principle but warns that genuine claimants should not be disadvantaged by any changes.

PROSPECTS continue to look fairly black for the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) which is 73 per cent owned by the British government which is desperate to divest itself of its shareholding in order to raise funds for the economy. At the time, it paid a staggering £45 billion (€52 billion) to rescue billion to rescue the bank the ailing bank at and only £1.2 billion back the equivalent of from the bank in return. £5.02 (€5.77) per share and ever since it has been looking to bail out but the continued poor performance of the bank has stymied its plans. In 2015, the government sold part of its holding but only raised £2.1 billion (€2.4 billion) and shares sold for a disappointing £3.30 (€3.80) each, although that was a great figure compared to the current share price of a fraction over £2 (€2.30). Apart from the fact that it has been unable to comply with an EU directive to sell its Williams and Glyn branches (after a potential

RBS: Carved in stone. sale to Spanish bank Santander fell through), it is also expecting a very heavy fine for misselling toxic mortgage packages in the USA. This was confirmed by James Leigh-Pemberton, the executive chairman of UK Finan-

cial Investments, the organisation that manages the public’s stake in RBS when he appeared before a committee of MPs and explained that there was likely to be a fine, but it could range anywhere from $5 billion

(€4.7 billion) to $12 billion (€11.25 billion) because of the huge and unexpected fine levied on Deutsche Bank which operated in a similar manner. Clearly no sane investor would want to put any significant amount of money into RBS until it is known what the fine is likely to be and because of the proximity of the appointment of the new US President and his subsequent appointment of a new Attorney General, nothing is going to happen in the immediate future. Whilst it is clear that the government at the time had to take action to support this and other banks, it does seem that the current government not only has its hands tied but potentially, when it can eventually offer the shares for sale, there will be a very significant loss when compared to the original investment. This uncertainty won’t help the Chancellor Philip Hammond with his forward financial planning and so far the government has received just £1.2 billion (€1.38 billion) back from the Bank in return for its investment as dividends are not yet being paid.

Barometer for Global Corruption

GLOBAL CORRUPTION: Accepting an ‘encouragement’.

By John Smith AN organisation called Transparency International, which supposedly has affiliates in 100 different countries, exists to promote transparency and to fight corruption in business and government. It is unofficial and can theoretically do nothing other than act as a conduit for whistleblowers and publicise critical information when it comes to hand thus alerting governments and the media. It does however compile regular surveys when people in different countries are asked for their opinion on the level of corruption and backhanders received in business and government in their country and these are published under the title Global Corruption Barometer. Whilst the results are often illuminating, it must be stressed that these opinion polls are based solely on opinion from around 1,000 people in each of the countries surveyed but they do make for interesting reading. The latest Barometer looks at most of Europe (although there are a number of countries in Scandinavia and even

One of the questions covered was whether respondents considered that corruption was one of the three biggest problems in their country. Germany is perceived as being the country with the least problem with corruption with just a 2 per cent vote and the relatively tiny Republic of Moldova (Moldavia) is seen as the most corrupt country with a response of 67 per cent. Alarmingly, Spain came a very close second with a ‘vote’ of 66 per cent and when one considers the spate

of prosecutions of former politicians perhaps it isn’t that surprising that people should feel that way about Spanish corruption in particular. With the exception of Portugal at 51 per cent, the bulk of EU members came very low in the list and even Greece was only considered marginally more corrupt than France with Italy slightly higher and the UK near the bottom. In a slightly different question which asked for views of corruption by members of parliament, Spain dropped right down the list and was beaten hands down by Greece and Italy, but bounced back when Spaniards were asked how well the country was fighting corruption with 80 per cent believing that it was doing very badly. The best bit of news was that the Spanish considered that corruption was mainly in the hands of politicians and big businesses and there was very little corruption reported with the police and local government, although others whose opinions were not canvassed may have different views.

High-priced living DESPITE prices falling by a solid 6 per cent the most expensive street in Spain has kept its mantle. Buying a property in Madrid’s Serrano Street will set you back an average of a whopping €10,246 per square metre. That makes an apartment of 100 square metres worth more than a million. Oddly enough the ‘most economical’ i.e. cheapest street in Madrid saw a price increase of 15 per cent and yet still sells for just €723. That makes a square metre on Serrano Street roughly 15 times more expensive. Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia is the country’s second most expensive at a luxurious €8,957 per square metre, while a plush intersection in San Sebastian comes third at €6,820. For those looking for a bargain there are four towns with prices under €400 per square metre, about as low as it goes in Spain. Talavera de la Reina in Toledo, Elche in Alicante, Castellon and Huesca are all remarkably cheap.

Housing market is on the up and up says BBVA By Sam Croft A RESEARCH report from banking entity B B VA h a s p r e d icte d th a t overall spending on housing will go up by about 3.1 per cent in 2016, and then by 3.5 per cent in 2017. The study’s authors expressed optimism over the findings, which indicate that the housing market is currently in a state of recovery and consolidation. BBVA has pointed out that the Spanish real estate market “has not shown significant changes in regards to what was seen in September.” However, it indicated that this is a positive sign, as the sector has recently been on a steady upswing, constantly either making progress or retaining a level of healthy stability. BBVA’s research department stated that the market is showing strong evidence of sustaining itself.

OPTIMISTIC FINDINGS: Indicate the housing market is in a state of recovery. Positive signs highlighted included an increase in the average gross income of homeowners, favourable

financial conditions which can benefit entrepreneurs and families, and the launch of new residential pro-

jects which will lead to employment opportunities and a wider range of options for homebuyers.

Property ownership SPAIN has one of the highest percentages of homeowners in Europe, while the UK lags behind. EU stats show that the rate of home ownership in Spain is 79 per cent, well above the UK at 65 per cent. Both are higher than the Germans, just over half of those eligible are homeowners, while the Poles come out top at 84 per cent. British privately owned homes are the smallest surveyed at a paltry 76 square metres, falling far short of their Portuguese counterparts who enjoy 112 square metres of room. In Germany people pay the lowest interest rates at just 2 per cent, while across the border the Dutch take out the longest mortgages at 30 years. The Dutch also pay less for their homes, while the Germans and Brits have seen prices jump by 30 per cent in just 10 years.

Removed rights and citizenship BREXITEERS seem to be very fond of using statistics to prove their argument. In the referendum 72.2 per cent of the electorate voted so 27.8 per cent of the electorate were too apathetic or were happy with the current status quo to bother to vote. If you include their number in those who voted to retain their European citizenship with all of its rights they would come to 29,056,683 Europeans, even if we extrapolate that figure of the referendum result into this figure it still comes to a large amount of people (22,482,712 people). Never in the history of human civilisation have so many people had their citizenship removed without their government being defeated in a military action. Should 22.5 million people have their rights and citizenship removed against their wishes what message will that be giving to the rest of the world? Gerard

Computer says no IN reply to your correspondence with regard to UK pensions being frozen as a result of Brexit, I am in the unfortunate position of having already suffered this for some years now. My only crime is that I spent half my working life in the UK and half here in Spain, having paid full contributions in both countries. Unfortunately, in Spain they will only make up my pension to the minimum state rate with no increases whatsoever. As a result, every time there is a rise in my UK pension rate, they decrease my Spanish one. Not only this if there is a rise in the value of the pound, they take this away from me at the same time.

Pension payments SOME of your readers are expressing fear that their pensions paid in Spain may be affected by the UK leaving the EU. All UK pensions are payable anywhere in the world. However only future increases are paid to expats living in countries with which the UK has entered into a Reciprocal Agreement on Social Security (RA). The UK had RAs since the 1950s with all Western European countries, but not with the Eastern European ones (they were at the time in the Soviet Bloc). When the UK joined the EEC in 1973 the RAs were superceded by the EEC rules. At that time Spain was not in the EEC, so the Reciprocal Agreement on Social Security with Spain continued in operation. When Spain joined the EEC in 1986 that RA lapsed and EEC rules took over. When Article 50 is invoked, the UK will use the two year period before leaving to enter into RAs with those countries remaining which wish to enter

I HAVE only just read the article in Issue 1635 ‘Do you indicate?’ and yes I do. As do the many other expat and foreign drivers as they let other road users know when they are turning or changing lanes. But we all know that the use of indicators in Spain by our fellow Spanish drivers, is mainly to let others know that I am obstructing a carriageway so that is why I am using my hazard warning lights As to the mention of a €200 fine by the police for not using them, it then beggars belief that the policeman fining you is working on the principle ‘do as I as I say and not do as I do.’ For in all the years of driving in Spain to actually see a police patrol vehicle using their indicators to warn other drivers of their intentions is a rarity. So if the Guardia Civil, National Police and Local Police drivers all indicated to let other road users know their intentions, they could then fine drivers knowing that they were leading from the front and until that happens other drivers will say well the police don’t do it so why should I? More women are missing smear tests than ever before THE number of women going for a smear test is at an all time

low. In the UK, since the 1980’s

women aged between 25 and 65 are invited to a smear test every three to five years, but new figures show that particularly younger women are missing their screening. Figures from NHS Digital for this year showed that 31 per cent of women aged between 25 and 49 had missed their test, a rise from the 24 per cent in 2011. Their data also reported that almost a quarter of women had not had a test in the past five years which is the worst rate since records began in 1997. Smear tests are vital to detecting cervical cancer, which is often known as the ‘silent killer’ as there are so few symptoms. As the number of those going for tests falls, the number of diagnoses is increasing with around 3,200 new cases a year being reported in the UK and more than half occur in women under the age of 45. The fall comes after years of highlighted awareness of the disease, particularly following the death of TV reality star Jade Goody. The celebrity, who rose to fame following her appearance on Big Brother, made her diagnosis public in August 2008 and in February 2009 her diagnosis was terminal. Her openness in talking about cervi-

cal cancer brought it to the forefront of the minds of many young women and between 2008-2009, it is believed that more than 400,000 women in England went and got tested. Known as the ‘Jade Goody Effect’ it lasted some years but women are now ignoring their appointments and not going for screening.

As the number of those going for tests falls, the number of diagnoses is increasing with 3,200 new cases a year in the UK. Many are calling on doctors to make the smear tests more accessible for women with many reluctant to take time off work or book a day’s holiday as appointments only fall within working hours. Women in Spain are advised to contact their medical centre if they have not had a smear test for a number of years. The smear test is very quick and involves taking a sample of cells from the cervix which will be examined for any changes, allowing them to be detected before they become cancer cells.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE never realised before but there is snobbery in the world of flying. I’m not talking about your first class mob. I’m talking about your everyday Ryanair, easyJet, and Monarch brigade. I’ve grumped about flying before so this is a bit of an update. This week I flew with Monarch, which is a perfectly adequate airline, but some of the punters were acting as though they were too good to be standing around waiting for a flight at all. It was a bit weird really. They all seemed a bit up themselves and a few of them were kicking off because there was no sign up saying which side was the speedy boarding line. They came marching down to the front of this massive queue with their boarding pass in the air and asking the girls behind the desk, who, by the way, obviously didn’t give a monkeys and just said, ‘Stand or sit and we will make an announcement when it’s time to board.’ This caused lots of tutting and mumbling. I’ve not seen this before as I usually fly easyJet and they always get the two lines going. With Ryanair, well there is no point questioning them as they will just not let you on

the flight. Then I remembered that Monarch was the last one to give in to the cheap flights and these people must be the remnants of the well looked after frequent flyers club. They were still living with the hope they were considered special. The old queuing lark doesn’t affect me as ‘I’m apparently the lucky one. Someone told me just that, that I didn’t have to stand in line because I’m in a wheelchair when I travel. ‘Sorry pal, did you just say I was lucky I didn’t have to queue because I’m in a wheelchair?’ I explained, in my usual friendly manner, that he was more than welcome to swap places with me if he really wanted to. All he had to do, to make it fair, is to be ‘lucky’ enough not to be able to stand still for more than a few seconds. Idiot! After all that the flight was fine. As I’m the last to get off the plane it still fascinates me to see everyone all get up and stand hunched up waiting for the doors to open as soon as the plane stops. You can’t go anywhere till people at the front start moving. Maybe someone can explain to me what that’s all about. So finally it’s the disabled crowd’s time to leave the aircraft and at Luton they use a separate vehicle to unload us. They never move us individually, it’s always together. So I’m sitting on the tail lift for about five minutes or so waiting to be unloaded and I said to the guy on the ground, ‘What happens if it was pouring with rain now?’ And his reply was, ‘You’d get wet wouldn’t you?’ Welcome to England!

It is time to plant out bulbs and other spring flowering plants and trees if you haven’t already. Bulbs are a great way to have strong healthy flowers with minimum effort and dependable results. All you need to do is enrich the soil and maintain moisture without saturating the soil. I prefer bulbs or bulb-like structures such as corms, rhizomes and tubers when planting perennial beds, borders or containers, as they can be left for a few years to bloom and divide giving the result of even more plants and flowers to expand the garden, fill gaps or share with friends. The sight of clumps of daffodils, jonquils, hyacinth, freesias, dahlias, anemones and lilies with their heavenly scents is enough to want to add them to any garden however large or small. Begonias and cyclamens are always an attractive choice for containers. Clevis in earthenware pots are a traditional Spanish favourite. Most bulbs,

How to blag yourself a bigger looking bedroom IF you wish your bedroom was bigger but a change of home isn’t on the books, there are various decorating tricks you can

use to make it look bigger and feel less claustrophobic. Colours and light play an important role in making rooms

visually larger, so go for light colours on the walls and if there isn’t much natural light choose your lights carefully to make it as bright as possible. Mirrors can be great make rooms look and feel bigger. Carefully placed decorative glass helps spread light around the room and reflect space, reducing the cramped feel. When choosing furniture try to choose items which incorporate storage space. Beds with storage underneath are great for keeping things tidy and uncluttered while wardrobes with sliding doors rather than hinges help make the most of space. Textiles can make a room feel overloaded if they are too thick or heavy. Stay away from heavy drapes or dark bedspreads and opt for cotton or linen which are lightweight and less visually stifling. As with the walls, go for light colours on your bed, using cushions to add a touch of bolder colours if you like.

I use them as a border on the eastern side of my rose garden to benefit from the afternoon shade and add more flowers around the base of the garden bed. It is best to lift the rhizomes every three years when the plants die back and replant 10cm deep with a spacing of 30cm between plants having removed the smaller weaker ones. Growing the seeds is interesting as they cross easily with other varieties of Daylilies to give new colours and forms. There are over 20,000 registered cultivars to choose from. Slugs and snails love Daylilies too, so it is good to ensure their protection by hunting them at night with a torch or spreading ground coffee from the pot around them to deter them after you have made your morning cafe con leche or cortado.

The time of year the pruning will be done depends mostly on geography. SHOULD you ask your cat to live with a dog? If you have cats that are not used to dogs, you should think carefully before doing this. If you must, then make sure it is a puppy as young as possible. Chasing breeds like greyhounds, hounds, or terrier breeds, are more likely to go for small furry running things like cats than gundog breeds like labradors or spaniels. NEVER ever expect cats to live with a dog that hates cats or, worse still, has been trained to chase cats. In this case, either cat or dog must be re-homed. How to make the introduction. First start with the cat, and only when the cat is established in the family,

add the dog. Both should be young: under six months for cats and under one year in dogs (a dog should not be introduced if it has a known record of being hostile to cats). They need to learn each other’s body language. The cat must be able to go towards and retreat from the dog without being chased or needing to run. Borrow a dog crate, where you can put the puppy with his bedding and bowls. When he comes out for walks, make sure he is on a lead. Let the cat first see him when he is safely in the crate. Do not let the cat get scared. Speak to your vet and use a Feliway Diffuser plug-in in the main room to reduce stress to the cat. While he is in the crate, make a fuss of the cat so that he realises it is a valued family member. Take this process carefully over several days. The aim is NEVER to let a chase occur in the first place. If things are going well, let him out of the crate but with a houseline (made out of old rope) trailing from his collar, so that you can grab it if necessary. You can also mix their scents, by putting pieces of an old towel in each others beds and then swapping

them round. Introducing a new cat to existing dog. This should only happen, if the dog is already accustomed to and friendly to cats. This time, the cat should be in the pen/crate whenever the dog is let into the room. Only when the dog is out of the room, should the cat be let out. Let it get accustomed to one room first. This can take several days. The aim is for the dog to get used to it. It should settle down and not harass it. The aim is NEVER to let a chase occur. Swap dog and cat bedding so their scents get mixed. Use a Feliway Diffuser in the room. Put it on a week before the introduction. Once they are absolutely used to it, keep the dog on a lead and let the cat out of the crate in the same room. Make sure they are completely under control at all times. If the cat runs away just the one time, it may set off the dog’s chasing instinct so try to make sure they are at total ease before introductions without the pen. Chasing will set back the whole process and perhaps make a good relationship impossible. Take it incredibly slowly. If you go too fast it may not work.

Road test: Audi A4 Avant by Nick Fletcher THE popularity of MPVs and SUVs has dampened demand for traditional estate cars, but a strong core market still remains for fast, refined and well-built estate models such as the Audi A4 Avant. It has formidable rivals from Mercedes C Class and BMW 3 Series among others, but in my view the Audi has a distinct sporting edge and cooler street image. Avant models come with petrol or diesel engines, manual or auto gearboxes, and some with all wheel drive so there is plenty of choice, with prices starting at £27,880 (€31,387). However, many Audi owners like to tailor their cars with additional kit and my test model, a 3.0 litre diesel in an already highly-equipped S Line trim and priced at £39,535 (€44,537) had so many extras, the final price was £52,895 (€59,547). Added equipment included head-up display, advanced parking assist, adaptive sports suspension, panoramic glass roof, 19 inch

alloys, and Technology, Comfort and Sound and Light and Vision packs. The 3.0 litre 270 hp diesel engine was mated to a Tiptronic gearbox and had allwheel drive, with sensational results: 060 mph in just 5.4 seconds, top speed 155 mph and fuel economy of 53.3 mpg combined. Underway, the car produced effortless performance, a smooth ride and outstanding grip and composure, aided by adaptive dampers which allow the driver to adjust the set up depending whether you want firm, sporty or supple comfort. And in city use this model is equally at home, with light precise steering and agile responses. Visually, the A4 Avant is an eye-catcher, with elegant chiselled styling and a look of restrained potency which appeals to younger, more discerning buyers seek-

The dashboard is logically designed, dominated by a large central infotainment screen, and a cascading central console which runs down between the front seats. Jaguar’s XKSS green machine is reborn JAGUAR made a splash at the LA Motor Show by debuting a newly built edition of its legendary XKSS. Only nine of the new versions have been produced and they’ve already been sold to wealthy collectors at more than €1 million a pop. Originally produced in the mid-50’s the XKSS was a roadlegal double to the Le Mans-winning sports car. With a nod to the race’s 24-hour timeline, 24 cars were built but a fire at Jaguars’ Midlands factory destroyed nine. The remaining 16 were scattered around the earth, with one going to Bullitt star Steve McQueen, who had a fondness for fantastic cars. His now rests at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles and Jaguar have waited 60 years to rebuild the nine lost in that fateful fire.
