By Matt Ford A British man on holiday with his wife and two daughters on the Costa Tropical has died after going swimming when red warning flags were flying. It is not known if the man ignored them when he went into the water at around 2.30pm on El Peñoncillo beach, in the area known as Los Cuartos Catalanes or El Corral de las Vacas. Although westerly winds had whipped up choppy conditions and lifeguards had raised the red flag, signifying that it

was too dangerous to swim, the man and his 10-year-old daughter entered the water. An emergency call was dialled in when beachgoers noticed that the 40-year-old man and the young girl were in trouble. Witnesses described them being dragged out by a strong riptide. A number of people tried to help the stricken pair but one of them, a 50-year-old man who managed to reach the young girl, then had to be rescued himself. Two lifeguards braved the

treacherous conditions to pull the father from the water and initially his life did not appear to be in any danger as he was still conscious. But on the beach his condition deteriorated and he died after emergency services spent more than an hour attempting to revive him. Cause of death will be determined by an autopsy, but it appears he suffered a heart attack. Some onlookers have complained that an ambulance took too long to arrive while others maintain there are too few red

flags on the beach. The nearest was some 300 metres away from where the tragedy happened. Thirteen people have now died on Malaga’s beaches this summer, with more than 500 having to be rescued.

ID bracelets IDENTIFICATION bracelets are being distributed to children and the elderly on the beaches of Motril in an effort to try and reduce the number of lost and disorien-

tated people. The bracelets have name and address details and are also waterproof and heatproof. See page 13
