Nerja feud POLITICAL parties in Nerja have found themselves caught

By Joe Chivers and Matt Ford The oven-like summer heat and arid conditions throughout Axarquia this year may be bringing in the tourists and providing a welcome boost to the local economy, but the wildlife finds the going hard. A mountain goat turned up on a busy road in Torre de Bengalbon last week, while urban sightings of other creatures such as snakes, owls, vultures, eagles and wild boar are on the increase.

Experts believe there are a number of reasons the animals could be making their way to coastal areas, but the most likely is a scarcity of food and water in their normal habitats. This is leading the bewildered beasts to seek shelter and sustenance in municipal gardens. In recent weeks farmers’ leaders have expressed concerns about the lack of water and the reservoir at Viñuela is at its lowest level for several years. “There is a natural population increase, and the younger animals are expanding their te-

rritory,” said Jose Antonio Vilodres, owner of the Rincon de la Victoria Animal Health Centre ‘Don Animal.’ “They are also looking for water and food along with new areas they can colonise, but we are watching them,” he added. In July alone, the Animal Health Park picked up 23 wild birds, including a bonelli’s eagle in Victoria Park, six snakes, two mountain goats and three wild boar from private homes. The majority were returned to their natural habitats within 24 hours with the authorities in-

La Viñuela forest fire controlled A FOREST fire that began on Friday (August 12) at Casa de Puente Alba near La Viñuela was brought under control by firefighters at 5.30pm on Saturday (August 13). The fire,

which began in an area of scrubland, was extinguished by a plane, helicopter, 16 firefighters and a fire engine. The total area that was affected by the fire is currently unknown.

Setting the stage PLANS are once again being drawn up for the restoration of the Lope de Vega Theatre in Velez-Malaga. The town hall has submitted a plan budgeted at €2.4 million to the Provincial Council following a failed bid by the previous government. The last plan, budgeted at €3.6 million by the PP government, was rejected last year.

Three arrested in brawl THREE people were arrested Sunday morning (August 14) for their role in a violent brawl in Nerja that saw several people suffer minor stab wounds. The suspects were arrested on Avenida de

Pescia, after allegedly taking part in a fight in a nightclub in the Tutti-Frutti square. They are not currently in custody, but are awaiting trial at Torrox Court.

Another hiker rescued By Joe Chivers AS the high season continues, so too does the rescuing of hapless hikers, with yet another being saved from the Rio Chillar on Tuesday August 16. The walker, a 42year-old man from Malaga,

was recovered from the popular Las Cahorros area of the river, north of Nerja. It is understood that the man had fallen on the river bed, and was unable to move: an extremely dangerous situation, particularly in the height of summer.

Emergency Services were informed of the man’s injury at 3.20pm, and firefighters, Civil Protection and the Guardia Civil went to the scene. Once the man was rescued, he was treated by paramedics, before being moved to Nerja’s health centre.

The latest case has chilling echoes of Mary-Anne Goosens, a Dutch woman who, in 2011, became trapped in a ravine near the source of the Chillar for 19 days. At least a dozen hikers have been rescued from the area in recent months.

TORRE DEL MAR has opened its new dog beach on the El Morchero stretch of Playa Torre Del Mar. It measures 50 metres in length with swimming now prohibited on this area of the beach, which will be maintained by a specialist cleaning crew. The facility is the result of “two years fighting to get this new space for dogs on the coast,” said Jesus Perez Atencia, Deputy Mayor and councillor for Beaches. He added “we sought a solution for this beach which is now a reality and is at the service of pets and their owners.” The ‘City of the Animals’ scheme is part of an ongoing campaign in the town to promote animal rights. The new beach is the fourth of its kind in Malaga Province. The others can be found in Fuengirola, Rincon de la Victoria and Casares. The beaches are the result of a legal loophole, as laws prohibit access of pets to beaches in the summer months. To get around this, the towns declare the dog beaches unfit for bathing, hence the ban on swimming.

Old station out to tender THE refurbishment of the old railway station in Ve l e z - M a l a g a h a s b e e n put out to tender by the council. The budget for the works has been set at

€240,208, with businesses having until Sunday September 11 to apply. The councillor for Planning and Infrastructure, Cynthia Garcia, said the

project can now go ahead after a grant was approved by the Diputacion. The railway station, built in the early 1900s, served the line connecting

Malaga to the Axarquia until 1968. The town hall has agreed the first floor can be demolished to improve the building’s lighting.

More hash found by police on the beach By Joe Chivers THREE more bundles of hash have washed up on the beaches of Axarquia. Two were empty but one of them contained 30kgs of the product. The two empty packages came ashore on the beaches

of Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria. It is thought their fabric construction was ripped by rocks, spilling the drugs into the sea. The other package was found floating off Torre Del Mar when it was spotted. A National Police officer

Treatment plant delayed again CONSTRUCTION of Nerja’s new sewage treatment plant is still stalled, with local laws prohibiting its construction during the high tourist season. The law forbids disruptive work on streets and tourist areas during the summer, which unfortunately covers the Burriana area where the plant will be built. Alterations have

also been made to the original plan, with the Ministry of the Environment requesting seven new discharge points, at a cost of €2.2 million. Several parts of the project have been completed, having been started in January 2014. The original planned completion date was June 2016, but has now been pushed back to early 2017.

Boy hurt in Nerja fall AN 11-year-old British boy was rushed to hospital after falling five metres from the path down to Playa El Salon, in Nerja. The boy struck his head and was knocked unconscious just after midnight, in the early hours of Sunday August 14. Fortunately, his injuries were not severe, and he was able to return to Nerja four hours after being admitted to the Hospital Comarcal in Torre Del Mar.

Body found off the beach of Almuñecar THE body of a man has been found floating in the sea off Playa Perro by police in Almuñecar. The man is thought to be North African and was pulled from the water by the Guardia Civil. His body was then taken to Motril as part of the police investigation.

Mayor urges careful use of local water FACED with a potentially crippling drought (EWN 1623), the mayor of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrera, has called on citizens not to waste water, due to the possibility of drought and to show support for local farmers. In the statement, Herrera pleaded with “citizens to take all necessary measures aimed at the most efficient use of water” recommending that all users avoid any excessive consumption. She went on to say that water should be kept only for essential uses since climate change and drought conditions meant water was “an increasingly precious” resource.

The 56-year-old star, who hosted Lorraine and Da y B r e a k , a n d now hosts Good Morning B r i t a i n , p o st e d a snap of herself sporting a navy swimsuit, pink baseball cap and sunglasses, and a great tan from t h e An d a l u c i a n sun. A MOTORIST who fell asleep at the wheel while driving near Alcaucin has been seriously injured. A passenger was also hurt in the incident on Sunday, August 14. The pair are understood to be non-Spanish. The incident occurred at 5:30am on the A402 road, a winding mountain road. The driver’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Cervantes arts festival continues By Joe Chivers VELEZ-MALAGA is continuing its promotion of Miguel de Cervantes over its summer festival season, with 2016 marking the 500th anniversary of his death. Friday, August 26 will see an ‘Open Night’ with 15 different locations across

the municipality putting on events. Several of the locations are personally connected to the author who visited Velez while working as a tax collector. A free bus service will be available on the night. Places hosting events include La Plaza de Carmelitas,

the Convento de San Francisco, and La Casa De Cervantes, an old rest stop where the writer allegedly stayed during his visit. The Contemporary Art Centre will be holding several theatrical performances, named ‘Quijotadas’, or ‘Quixotic Acts’ after Cervantes’ most famous character.

Departures from Motril port fall MOTRIL port has recorded a drop in the number of passengers departing for North Africa as part of Operacion Paso del Estrecho (OPE). The operation organises travel for immigrant workers who go home during the summer. This year, the port has registered 115,300 passengers, 18,184 fewer than in 2015. The number of vehicles registered has also fallen by 12.2 per cent, despite the opening of a new Motril-Tangier ferry route. Nearly 180 trips have been made from Motril since the start of this year’s operation in June.

Botellon alive and well in Almuñecar By Joe Chivers BOTELLON, a tradition of evening public drinking among Spanish youths has proved it’s still alive and kicking in Almuñecar this year. The activity involves groups ranging in size from a handful of people to several hundred, gathering in a public place to drink and socialise. In Almuñecar, it’s the beach that’s given a home to this activity, with hundreds coming together each weekend at the Paseo de Las Gondolas on Playa Puerta del Mar after it was banned in other areas of town. With the gatherings happening on the beach, they are in the jurisdiction of the Costas rather than the town, rendering them unable to fine the groups. Faced with groups sometimes numbering up to a thousand, the handful of Local Police can have a difficult time keeping order.

“I cannot allow my police officers to mess with this crowd,” said Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, the mayor’s Lieutenant for Security. “In addition, we do not have the capacity to enter and fine on the beach, since it is governed by the powers of the Costas.” Instead, the town hall has adopted a strategy of prevention, with police patrolling the promenade attempting to deter more people from joining the crowds. Complaints about Botellon do not come from residents, who mostly only complain about cars blasting music for the revellers. Instead the complaints largely come from those who run bars and other venues. Botellon largely originated as a way to get around high drink prices, similar to pre-drinking in the UK. At least one bar manager said he would ban Botellon but the event looks set to continue for some time.

Nerja negotiates cash return By Joe Chivers NERJA allegedly found itself on the receiving end of an order from Andalucia’s High Court to return more than

€300,000 to the Junta. The order is the result of Nerja’s failure to build a new health centre, planned in 2003, which would have been co-financed with the Junta.

The location was decided: on the banks of the Rio Chillar in the west end of the town. A budget was set at €2.4 million. Come 2008, when construc-

tion of the centre was cancelled, the then mayor, Jose Alberto Armijo (PP) set about refunding the money to the Junta. The amount refunded only came to €1.082 million, with municipal services claiming €235,820 had been spent on various procedures. In November, the High Court ordered the municipality to return the full amount, plus interest at total of €306,824.39. The order allegedly came as a shock to new mayor Rosa Arrabal Tellez, who described

They ended the statement with a condemnation of Arrabal’s alleged “lack of management.”

Congestion relief SEVERAL projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Velez-Malaga’s centre have been completed at a cost of nearly €443,000. The works focused on the intersection of Avenida Vivar Tellez and Calle Barrero de Capuchinos, a location prone to problems. Kerbs have been realigned allowing two lanes of traffic access to the roundabout. Clearing roads has taken precedence with traffic islands being replaced and palm trees moved elsewhere.

A British fantasy novel forged in Axarquia By Joe Chivers RHYS RITHENMERE, a British Axarquiabased author has written a new novel aimed at nine-12 year olds, titled Molly Chatsworth and the Skull of Belegnoth. The book tells the story of Molly Chatsworth, a 12-year-old girl who keeps encountering ‘lost spirits’ in her room at night. After a visit from her eccentric grandmother, she learns of her membership in a global network of Telepaths, Empaths and other gifted individuals, called the Gathering of Light. Rhys’ inspirations run the gamut of various artistic styles. Enid Blyton served as his introduction to writing, but he is also inspired by Tolkien and the highly cinematic films of the 1980s, by directors such as Stephen Spielberg. According to Rhys, it was during childhood that he first showed an interest in writing his own book. “I’ve always been one for myths, magic and fantasy,” says Rhys, who also cites the mysteries of childhood as helping to create

Molly Chatsworth. However, as many artists find they must, Rhys put his artistic ambitions to one side, going through a tumultuous adulthood of various jobs and financial troubles. In 2005, Rhys became homeless for a period of several months. It was during this time that the first concrete ideas of Molly Chatsworth came into being. “When I was made homeless, something had to change. [I] had to change my life, had to change where I lived, had to change everything,” he says. Adding that writing acts as a therapeutic measure. “It’s a very cathartic thing to do… when you get into that zone, it’s a bit like meditation.” A lot has happened to Rhys since then. He met his wife, Jean, and moved to Axarquia in October of last year, after living in Spain onand-off since 1997. He describes the region as deeply cultured, saying “we love the culture, we love the people, we love the area.” Molly Chatsworth and the Skull of Belegnoth was published by Amazon, and has now been

out for several months and has received an enthusiastic reception from both children and adults. Through contacts in the UK, it found its way to two schools in the Darlington area, who took it on as a project. The children’s parents are greatly enjoying the book too, according to Rhys, who said “I had an email just recently from a lady who bought it for her 12year-old daughter. Whilst the chain does not allow suppliers to use antibiotics in order to promote growth in the chicken they supply, it does not currently object to the use of these drugs to prevent illness. Competitors McDonald’s recently announced that it now uses antibioticfree chickens in the US and Canada.

A number of economies in decline By John Smith PUTTING to one side the pros and cons of the Brexit decision as the die is cast, whatever happens in the future, Britain needs to be in a position to export its goods and to trade with the powerhouse economies as well as those ex-colonies which Brexiteers said were queuing up to renew trading arrangements such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Even assuming that this is a fact rather than a wish, their economies are relatively small and do not offer the same opportunities as areas such as China and Germany but those two major markets are themselves not in a particularly strong position at the moment. The Hinkley Point hesitation has given the Chinese the opportunity to wave a big stick at Britain, implying that this sort of delay by the new Government could hurt future trading arrangements between the two countries, but this could be an example of face saving as China is without doubt continuing to experience financial difficulty with both industrial output and retail sales falling below expectation. China is not in a recession and many countries would be delighted to possess the financial strength that it does have, but by recent standards, things are definitely slowing down

and causing some concern for the authorities there and as the economy is streamlined so there have been a number of job losses which would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Germany is also seeing a slow-down in growth although it is in keeping with forecasts for the entire European Union which is a little worrying as Germany is normally the bellwether of Europe rather than one of the sheep. According to certain economists, Germany must not be diverted or affected by the Brexit vote but should continue to invest in industrial growth in order to ensure that the economy prospers rather than shrinks. These ‘wise men’ argue that whilst the Eurozone struggles with meeting financial targets which are being missed by countries such as Portugal and Spain and Italy is awash with bad debts, Germany needs to be alert to the fact that the British economy will suffer for a while which will mean that car exports as well as those in the pharmaceutical industry will slow down. Nowadays, so many economies are intertwined and depend on the health of other countries over which they have no direct influence that it has become increasingly more difficult to accurately forecast the future health of an individual country.

Facebook fights to continue free service By John Smith IT is undeniable that in today’s society, social media is king and huge numbers of people not only have Facebook accounts but spend hours on that particular site seeing what their friends are up to, swapping information, spotting the latest trends and watching amusing videos of family, pets and events. The good thing about Facebook and similar sites is that they are free, but they haven’t become multi-billion dollar operations without keeping a close eye on income streams and almost all of their money comes from paid for advertising, some of which is quite blatant, whilst others are more insidious. Only this week, a number of celebrities and businesses have been warned not to promote products that they have been paid to promote on social media without making it clear that that is the case and even with films and television paid product placement is recognised and accepted. One company, Adblock Plus has targeted Facebook and offers software that can block adverts from appearing on the pages of Facebook users and

there is almost a daily duel with Adblock Plus posting new software and Facebook countering it. The Facebook corporation argues that their current nemesis is not just blocking adverts but is also stopping genuine posts. “We’re disappointed that ad blocking companies are punishing people on Facebook as these new attempts don’t just block ads but also posts from friends and Pages,” the company said in a statement. “Adblockers are a blunt instrument, which is why we’ve instead focused on building tools like ad preferences to put control in people’s hands.” Whilst many will support the fact that a company is prepared to fight the mighty Facebook in order to assist members so that they don’t have to be pestered by adverts, it turns out that this is not an action done solely in the interest of the public at large in a ‘David v Goliath’ battle but it is part of a financial strategy as Adblock Plus will happily unblock advertisers provided that it is paid to do so. Facebook are understandably unhappy about this and would rather fight the newcomers than pay them to keep away.

EU Commission excuse fines

By John Smith ON August 9 the European Commission tweeted ‘Following our recommendations, EU finance ministers cancel fines for Spain and Portugal. We welcome this decision.’ It confirmed the two countries had escaped significant fines for the way in which their finances have been managed. Very simply, EU rules require that no member of the Union should run an annual deficit in excess of 3 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), although only those countries who are members of the Eurozone can be fined for breaching this. In the case of Spain, its excess was a whopping 5.1 per cent and Portugal was close behind at 4.4 per cent and the originally proposed fines would have been the first ever to be levied since the Eurozone was created but on this occasion, the EU quoted ‘exceptional circumstances’ for the decision to suspend the fines.

Portugal has been given until the end of 2016 to get its house in order and reduce its deficit to 2.5 per cent and Spain has been given a little longer with the expectation that it will reduce to 4.6 per cent by the end of 2016, 3.1 per cent by the end of 2017 and 2.2 per cent by the end of 2018, whilst both must give a detailed explanation of how they will achieve this by October of this year. There is a general dichotomy of opinion on the decision as some argue that it is pointless to fine a country thus worsening its financial situation whilst others argue that it completely devalues the rules of the organisation if they are not imposed. France was in a similar position last year when it also had a potential fine waived. One argument is that the Commission fears that with the British referendum result and general discontent with many of the activities of the Union, cancelling the fines means there will be less negative comment from the two nations, but as

they both receive more funds than they put into the EU, it hardly seems that their own exit would be imminent regardless of the decision. “The EU finance ministers decided to cancel financial fines for Spain and Portugal. They also confirmed the new budgetary adjustment paths for both countries. Effective action by Spain and Portugal will be a necessary condition to lift the suspension of commitments under the European Structural and Investment Funds,” said EU commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis. Economic financial affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici said: “I trust that Spain and Portugal will respond accordingly to the collective decisions by the Commission and the Council.” Whilst Spain still continues to search for a government, this is at least one less worry for the interim government for the time being, although the problem will not simply go away and will have to be addressed in the coming years.

OTHERS THINK IT THIS week I found myself in ‘heavy discussion’ with my Irish nearest and dearests. One of them asked if I liked the Mrs. Brown’s Boys TV comedy series. To their apparent surprise, I told them I didn’t. “Why not?” they enquired, somewhat incredulously. “He’s a wonderful comedian and is so generous with his work and donations to charities.” “I’m sure he is,” I replied. “It’s the constant tirade of swearing I can’t abide.” “Ah, don’t be ridiculous,” they chorused. “He does so much of it that you soon get used to it.” And that statement,

to me, summed up the whole problem. As standards in the media deteriorate, particularly on television, the more we accept. We do in fact ‘get used to it!’ Well I don’t want to ‘get used to it’. I don’t want my front room bombarded with depravity and obscenities. “You can always switch off,” I hear the modern ‘incrowd’ sneering derisively. Well I’ll tell you, with the depths to which television has now fallen, that can be increasingly difficult. These days it’s almost impossible to watch even the most innocuous of programmes without some, craw sticking expletive deletive. And this week, to top it all we had a leading member of the bench call the accused a c….! Admittedly the low life in the dock used the same insult to the judge immediately prior, but really… With monotonous predictability, a thousand tweeted and twittered how wonderful she was, having told this mo-

ron exactly what she thought of him. Ok, that’s all very well, but this is a high court judge; a member of our society who should be able to control their emotions impeccably yet still thousands praised her remarks. And do you know why? Because we’ve ‘gotten used to it’. Well I’ll tell you, the more decadent we become, the more power we hand to our Islamic enemies, whose support for an austere and Sharia Law existence will inevitably appear considerably more attractive to our disillusioned young people. A JERSEY headmaster cancelled his school’s annual day-trip to the beach this summer in case his students got skin cancer. This comes amid new health warnings that the Channel Island of Jersey is fast becoming the world’s top hotspot for malignant melanoma. Before the ‘elf ‘n’ safety’ mob start, wasn’t this surely an opportunity to teach students how to enjoy the sun and sea safely? What’s wrong with taking a few sensible precautions in case it’s a sunny day: like asking parents to send their kids to school with a hat, suncream and bottled water? Otherwise that’s like me saying: “I’m not sending my children to school, in case they get bullied, in case they do badly in their exams, or in case their teacher is a complete ****.” Banning children in Jersey from playing by the sea is a bit like banning children in Cornwall from eating pasties, although it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if this has already happened. No wonder we have Generation Snowflake when we teach kids to be so risk averse and paranoid about every-

THINGS change so quickly in the modern world that it is sometimes difficult to be absolutely certain as to where the loyalty of different countries lies and their positions can change dramatically, almost at the drop of a hat. For years the European Union has flirted with Turkey offering the promise of EU membership which would allow Turkish citizens free passage throughout Europe in return for it being a potential new market. It has a large land mass straddling two continents and for many, blocking the irresistible march of Islamic fundamentalism. As the number of refugees from Syria grew to flood proportions, with Turkey being not only a gigantic refugee camp but also a conduit for refugees smuggling themselves

and it may well be that the imagined threat of millions of Muslim Turks arriving in the UK swayed voters in the referendum, although there are of course a huge number of Turks living in the UK and across Europe already who managed to enter quite legally.

ALTHOUGH it appears, following the result of the referendum, a number of British passport holders (many of them long-time residents in Spain) have been looking at ways of retaining EU nationality - thanks to Irish ancestors, displaced German Jewish family and residency rights there is no question that many people still see a British passport as a valuable commodity. It’s for that reason, and the fact so many British holidaymakers are travelling the world, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued timely advice about safeguarding your passport. It’s being shared by the British Embassy in Madrid through newspapers such as Euro Weekly News which has a large readership amongst those living here and visitors. According to the FCO, more than 5,000 passports were lost in Spain in 2015 meaning potentially 5,000 people are travelling throughout Europe or further afield using one of those stolen British passports. Apart from the potential identity fraud and sheer inconvenience of visiting an Embassy or Consulate to prove your right to receive a temporary travel document, there’s also a significant cost involved as the British government ensures charges are in accordance with the cost of administering the activity. The travel document costs £100 (€120) and a new passport, only available from the passport office in the UK, can cost between £72.50 (€87) and £103 (€122) and may involve an interview at a passport office depending on how quickly you need it. So follow FCO advice to ensure you’re not caught out.

In the meantime, Turkey had fallen out with Russia following the shooting down of a Russian aircraft that was patrolling in Syria and it looked as if the two nations could themselves be in a state of potential armed aggression. Then, of course, came the attempted coup in Turkey which some believe was backed, if not inspired by the USA. With a new cold war and the Islamic concept of ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’, there has been a marked détente between Turkey and Russia which may bode ill for the future. It certainly looks as if the EU will attempt to act diplomatically against Turkey in the event that the government there brings back the death penalty for those who rebelled against it. Referendum: democratic deficit DOES Ron from Mallorca really believe that the referendum result was democratic? A democratic vote means that all people affected should be allowed a vote. I’m sure I don’t have to point out just how many people affected were not allowed a vote. It has been well publicised. And no, I won’t get over it, Ron, having paid into UK coffers for over 50 years as have a good many other expats including my husband. Christine, Mijas Costa

Dangerous minds

We had Muslim stokers working in the stoke hold, they would go into the galley after I’d cleaned up for the day and cook themselves something, leaving behind a terrible mess. I would have to get up extra early at 5am to clean up before I could start my day’s chores. The cook suggested I put bacon rashers over the door and on the door handle so I followed his advice, that soon stopped them and I got my full night’s sleep! Joseph Billet

HE is always complaining about the foreign immigrants into his own country, that they do not bother to speak the language, and many sponge off of the state and do not pay their fair share of tax. But he too is an immigrant and has lived in his adopted country for about 10 years, but apart from perhaps managing to say please and thank you, also doesn’t speak the language. But luckily he does not need to since he only mixes with other immigrants from his own country and culture and, anyway, his seven-year-old child can speak the language. He does get very upset at times and often complains that many of the businesses, services and organisations are not the same as the country from which he came. This, especially, when he has to go to see a doctor who cannot understand him and he cannot understand the doctor. Surely the doctor should speak his language? He certainly does not like to be called an immigrant, how distasteful. He is not an immigrant, he is an expat. That sounds much better. Still, he does like the sun and the sea of the Costa del Sol, so manages to put up with all the other annoying facets of Spain. David Petie

I AM puzzled and amazed by the words used in your article about the temporary medical centre in Javea... “half of the playground was taken to build the medical centre with the loss of the football pitch and table tennis area”...well, I pass this area twice a day and, no way has half the area been used, not even quarter and the children are still playing football, basketball and the two table tennis tables are still there, moved a little sideways but still available although seldom actually used. Personally, I was delighted to see this building and very much hope it could become permanent as there are many elderly people in the area who find the journey to the Port or the Pueblo quite difficult. Surely life is all about compromise and sharing and I feel this is a somewhat selfish attitude being expressed here by one group. I accept they painted the walls and arranged for provision of football nets, tennis tables, basketball hoops, etc. and tidied up the area...I am in no way diminishing the effort put in here and I applauded it at the time. Previously there was a temporary school building there and the surface was already concreted and even. We all have to live together and learn to share facilities and arrange things for the best interests of the whole community. Margaret F Carlin, Javea

Expatriate elections AS we have now read there will be no ‘vote for life’ for 15-year plus expatriates as promised by David Cameron in his 2015 manifesto, the same one in which he regretfully promised the Brexit referendum. The reason given that it would be too difficult to put into practice.

WHY are so many older people in Engla n d , the ve ry one s w ho w ould ha ve clearer memories of the war against N az i domina tion, s o be w itc he d by those who had sympathy with that ideology? Statistics show that their preferred newspaper is the Daily Mail, whose owners, the Rothermeres, were friends and supporters of Hitler in the 1930s. Also, plus 65s are more likely to support UKIP, whose leader Nigel Farage was known in his younger days to be a troublemaker and National Front supporter.

I suggest we lobby Mrs May and both Houses to create a constituency and MP purely for expats. This MP would then represent our interests. around the main square in Torremolinos, I feel the police and local council are missing a far louder problem that has been going on for years. I talk of the motorbike that rules the decibel charts and has been number one for ages. I live on the main road which runs through Benalmadena Costa which sometimes feels like I am sleeping next to the Isle of Man TT circuit, with unprecedented levels of noise created by motorbikes and larger scooters. It is not something that is confined to late night but a genuine very loud assault on people’s ears at anytime. Why do the police allow this noise to continue when the number of fines issued would probably clear the out-

standing debts to the EU? Naturally I am making the assumption that there are laws preventing this volume and can certainly see why Spanish people are voted one of the loudest races on Earth, as they have to speak up to be heard. Johnathan Robertson

Is the Pound starting to stabilise? ON the day after the UK’s EU Referendum, the Pound fell sharply against the Euro and other major currencies. There were more significant fluctuations in the following weeks, both down and up, as markets reacted to each new development in the rapidly changing political landscape. But it seems that, while the Pound is weaker than it has been previously, its value is starting to become less volatile. The new government is settling in, while the Bank of England has provided a consistent voice throughout the changes. The Bank of England has now announced some monetary stimulus plans and there is scope for the government to offer further support for the UK economy. Bank of England cuts interest rates As was widely expected, the Bank of England cut interest rates to 0.25 per cent. They also increased their quantitative easing programme by £60 billion, which was a surprise to markets and may explain why the Pound dropped 1 per cent against the Euro.

GOVERNMENT PROMISE: To support the economy and promote confidence. Despite this initial dip, there has been a generally positive reaction to the announcement, as Mark Carney and his colleagues have shown they are determined to protect the economy from the negative sentiment that is starting to be suggested in economic data.

UK government promises further support The new chancellor Philip Hammond responded to the Bank of England’s announcement by saying that, “alongside the actions that the Bank is taking, I am prepared to take

any necessary steps to support the economy and promote confidence.” More details of these plans are expected to be released in the next Autumn Statement in November, and could include cuts to corporate tax, personal tax and VAT. What’s next for the Pound? While there is still plenty of uncertainty about the future, it appears the actions of the Bank of England and the government could help to stabilise the UK economy. As a result, the Pound is likely to stay reasonably stable at its current level for now, while everyone waits for more data to determine the long-term impact of Brexit. In the meantime, the market’s attention is likely to shift to other global events, particularly the upcoming US elections. CLOCKING UP CALORIES: Many alcoholic drinks are laden with ‘empty calories.’ MANY of us will sip a glass or two of wine during the long hot summer nights, but exactly what do those drinks equate to in terms of exercise and burning off the calories consumed? According to new evidence produced by an online doctor service and inspired by the Olympics, the workouts could be a lot more intense than you may think, leading you to second guess that second glass. Two glasses of wine con-

tain around 437 calories. A person weighing 11st (around 70kg) would need to do more than 30 minutes of Olympic running, boxing or kayaking in order to burn off those calories. A chocolate digestive biscuit with a cup of tea can easily turn into four which equates to around 343 calories. This is the same amount of energy burned by 30 minutes of Olympic swimming. Fitness experts often point to swimming as one of the most

comprehensive cardiovascular workouts around. Two pints of lager not only contains around four units of alcohol but also has around 360 calories. To burn these off you would have to undertake 30 minutes of taekwondo. Half an hour of Olympic level water polo would burn off a 350-calorie slice of chocolate fudge cake while two caffe lattes would rack up around 360 calories that could be burned off with half an hour of judo.

Fall in fertility FERTILITY rates in the USA are at their lowest ever rate according to a new report. In the first quarter of 2016, the birth rate was 59.8 babies born to every 1,000 women, with the statistics following the steady trend of decline since records began in 1909, when the birth rate was 126.8 babies per 1,000 women of childbearing age. Experts say women delaying motherhood is a key factor which can lead to fertility problems. However the report also showed a welcomed fall in the number of teenage births, but premature births are increasing, from 9.59 per cent to 9.86 per cent since the first quarter of 2015. Another report also shows a rise in maternal mortality rates with the US now seeing as many deaths during childbirth as medics do in Ukraine and Iran. Deaths do not seem to occur from delivery complications, but from underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

In case you don’t have one, salt water could also be a solution. For approximately 15 minutes, we should apply cold to the affected zone. If you use ice, don’t apply the ice directly to the sting, but rather cover it with a cloth or a towel. If any of the ten-

tacle is still stuck to the skin, remove it, but never with the hands. Use some kind of pincers. You should also use some kind of antihistamine, for the reaction, and a painkiller for the pain. Pregnant women must pay special attention when taking antihistamines. If the pain is very intense, or the victim’s condition worsens, they should seek medical attention immediately. It’s not necessary to rub yourself, either with towels or with sand; not with anything that could hurt you even more. How can I avoid being stung by a jellyfish? You should keep an eye out for the appearance of these animals on beaches or places where you regularly swim. You should never touch or handle jellyfish if you are not wearing appropriate protective gloves. Limit yourself to looking at them from far away. They may be curious creatures, but you shouldn’t forget that their stings can be dangerous.

Let’s start with the location of the land, I’m assuming that you have chosen your favorite location but that’s not enough, there are several points that you will need to check out before buying.

DREAM LOCATION: Make sure it stays that way by checking out local planning. Here are my top 10 tips for buying land on the Costas and Mallorca. 1. Check that the land can be built on legally; ask to see the current planning permission and how many m 2 you can build and how many floors 2. Check that your views will

not be blocked if other properties are built around you 3. Check if you can design your dream home facing South; if it’s not possible, position your pool to get afternoon sun 4. Now, take a good look at your land; you will need to clear the land before you can start building,

you need to keep the costs low, as it adds no value to your home The cost will be high if the land is covered in hard rocks, trees and existing buildings to demolish and remove 5. Building long and high retaining walls is expensive and adds no value to your home

6. Check that the land is not restricted or close to overhead high tension cables and telephone masts, noisy motorway or on the local airport’s flight path 7. Check the land is connected to the mains for all services and supplies 8. Check local planning; will a new motorway be built on or near your land? Two key international accommodation platforms, Airbnb and Homeaway, have been explicitly targeted by a new sanctioning regime which now has fines ranging from €60,000 to €600,000. Although reaching crisis point in Barcelona, the issue is not confined to there, authorities in Andalucia, the Balearics and Valencia are also establishing harsh new regimes to stamp out all the clandestine practices.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I HAVE noticed a lot of people, especially British males, who seem to be getting dressed in the dark. I know it’s August and I know it’s hot but you are hurting my eyes! Where do I start? Cor, the list is endless. Ok here we go! You can’t wear checked shorts and a checked or striped shirt. The rule is simple. If you’re wearing striped or checked shirts you may only wear plain shorts and vice versa. Unless your house is burning down and the only thing you can throw on are both checked, as soon as you and the family are safe ditch the shirt. Socks with sandals are an offence punishable by an on the spot fine. If you’re not built like an Olympic weightlifter you may not wear sleeveless vests, especially with a beer gut, just to show misspelt tattoos. On the subject of tattoos, ladies over a certain age should not have them full stop. And if you had them done when you were younger, don’t you wish you hadn’t? Gents, are you an Olympic diver? If you had to think about that then the answer is no. Therefore, under no circumstances, are you

allowed to wear speedos on the beach. Ok? I must say this applies mainly to older Scandinavian men. They look ridiculous and not only can people see what sex you are, we can also tell your religion! Not pretty! A phrase you’re never ever going to hear is “Wow don’t those three-quarter length trousers look amazing with those crocs? Has Vogue been onto you about doing next month’s cover?” Crocs may only be worn by hospital theatre staff in green scrubs and masks. And there’s a good reason for the masks, they don’t want to be recognised out in the street as croc wearers. And what’s the British obsession with wearing football shirts? If you’re going out for a family meal put a decent shirt on please and junior doesn’t need one either, unless, of course, you’re going to watch or play footy. Have a look at how the Spanish dress their kids. Amazing, and a lot to be learnt there. I’m not going to write anything about the ladies because I’m a gentleman but please just note; if you can see your undies every time you move your dress or skirt may just be too short and a shade tight. I mentioned tattoos before and that reminded me of a young lady on the beach. I noticed she had a big lettuce leaf tattoo coming out the back of her bikini bottoms. I had to ask her what it was and she said: “It’s just the tip of the iceberg!”

BY the month end late summer harvests will be bountiful and Spain’s ‘second spring’ just a month away. It’s time to decide what vegetables and herbs to plant for autumn, winter or spring consumption. New gardeners in Spain will be amazed by the possibilities for Christmas day: Broccoli/brussels sprouts: plant seeds early, plant plantlets in October or buy at that time. Potatoes: keep old potatoes in a warm dark place to stimulate growth before planting out. Non-storing onions: sow seeds in September, plant plantlets October/December. Garlic: plant corms in November/December. Carrots/parsnips: sow seeds from September. Beetroot: September to October. Radishes: sow seeds October to December. Broad Beans: October to December. Peas: November to December. Lettuces and cut-and-come-again seed mixes:

AUTUMN HARVEST: Bumper crop. sow seeds September to October, plant plantlets as soon as you see any. Agretti: sow seeds in September/October. Wondering what agretti is? Illustrated above right it came up in one of my builder’s buckets it tastes like a cross between young spinach and

samphire. I explored further and found: • It’s also known as land seaweed, friars beard, saltwort and Salsola soda. • It’s full of the energy of spring • Vast quantities were burned in Spain and Italy in glass and soap making until a modern alterna-

tive was found in the 19th century. • It became a niche peasant food in Italy. • It’s recently been rediscovered and used in restaurants in Italy and the UK and made popular in TV cooking programmes. • It’s tasty eaten drizzled with fine olive oil and lemon or in a tart. • Seed stocks are low in UK and Italy. When we wrote ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ we had successfully grown 110 types of vegetables here in Spain. Some we liked better than others and I have now add Agretti. Dogs have simple stomachs and short digestive tracts for digesting meat. They also lack the saliva enzyme amylase, which is necessary for pre-digesting starch. Checking the label of a Super Premium or Performance food an animal protein will be listed as the first or second major ingredient. These should include chicken, turkey meat, or poultry by products, meals, meat or pork meals

or other animal by products. A least two sources of fat or oil should be included for adequate energy and essential fatty acids. Fat is the dog’s source of energy. Animal fat contains essential and nonessential fatty acids and provides a highly digestible and easily metabolised energy source. Generally, poultry, turkey or chicken fat are higher in quality because they have more unsaturated fatty acids. Vegetable oils, such as soybean, lecithin corn, wheat germ, sesame seed or linseed all contain high levels of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for dogs and should be combined with animal fats for the best long-term results. Carbohydrates are the third most important nutrient and ingredient class in modern Super Premium and Performance foods. Simple carbohydrates in dog food come from quality sources like rice, oatmeal, corn or wheat. Fibre, a complex carbohydrate is essential for proper digestion and stool formation. Beet pulp and tomato promace are both high in fibre. Other sources include rice, soy hulls, oat

hulls, wheat bran and peanut hulls that come from the external portion of the seed coat. These sources, except peanut hulls, have microscopic sharp edges, which can cause small cuts in the intestine. Peanut hulls however, have the potential of being contaminated with aflatoxins and should never be used in a quality dog or cat food. Vitamin and mineral fortification is a necessity and provides some of the most crucial nutrients. Often the list of micro nutrients is much longer than the list of major ingredients. Expect this list in all dog foods. Super Premium usually feature more than one source for each vitamin and mineral. The ingredient list will be longer compared to non-premium foods. It’s not recommended you add anything by way of food supplement, or vitamin to Super Premium Foods. To sum it up lets compare Regular/ Economic foods to Regular Petrol, then a Premium food to a Premium petrol, and of course Super Premium food to a Super Premium petrol. That’s a simple example and indication. I wouldn’t put diesel in my car!

The clash of the titans By Matthew Elliott THIS weekend’s Mecum Monterey Auction in California will be one for the history books. There will be a 1973 Volkswagen Thing, a 1977 AMC Gremlin, vintage 1972 Oldsmobile, a 1965 Apollo 5000GT, a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria Skyliner, a classic 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, and a 1958 Studebaker Scotsman Wagon with a Cyclops Eye speedometer and Rocket Racing wheels. And that’s just the Thursday. With the eclectic array of old classics expected to fetch anywhere from €500€100,000, most of the media attention will doubtless be on the cast of big hitters destined to go for at least a cool million. From August 18 to 20 lucky spectators will be able to catch a glimpse of a Ford GT40 Mk1, the very first road car delivered to North America and replete with air con, leather trim, chassis and a special paint finish. Incidentally the model also won four consecutive LeMans. Expected

More practically minded oligarchs will edge closer towards a stunning Maserati MC12, which is at once vastly cheaper,

and also road-legal, an absolute necessity for those atavistic drivers looking to drive their car rather than simply fawn over it. Other contenders include a Bugatti Veyron 16.4, Ferrari 288 GTO, a naked Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach, and a Lamborghini Miura P400. All present owners expect at least €1 million for their treasures. Motorcycle-lovers often find themselves given short shrift at these petrol drenched spectaculars. Not so at Monterey where you’ll find a virgin 2014 Lotus C-01, a 1931 BMW R16, a 1966 Rickman Desert Racer, and even an unrestored 1952 Vincent Comet, twin of the fearsome Vincent Black Shadow.

Markets put brakes on DESPITE still leading the pack, Volkswagen has recorded a worrisome collapse in European sales throughout July, with volume dropping down below 100,000 units for the first time in years. On average, all car sales declined by two per cent across the continent but Volkswagen dropped a hefty 13.9 per cent, seeing its market share of new cars slip from 13.2 per cent last year to 11.6 per cent in 2016. The Volkswagen Golf was still the continent’s best-selling car, outstripping the Ford Fiesta, but its volume has declined by roughly a quarter over a tumultuous year which has seen the German brand on the ropes over the emissions scandal. The European markets were varied with Britain and Italy registering solid growth, while Spain was down 2 per cent, France 10 per cent, and even Germany suffered a decline.

Back to basics: no nonsense manual transmission SOME might say the evolution of automatic transmission hotwired our current trajectory towards autonomous cars, a revolution replacing man with machine that’s set to take human skill, effort, and focus out of the equation entirely. Stubbornly resisting this trend are real motorheads who love the feel and power offered by a manual gearbox and fortunately there’s still a few

sports cars out there with that option available. McLaren, Lamborghini and Ferrari have all but disowned the humble stick but you can still get a Porsche 911 Carrera with a manual gearbox, or even a 911 R with a six-speed manual, although it’ll cost around €10,000 extra. The old-school Dodge Viper simply wouldn’t be the same with automatic and keeps true to its roots

with a six-speed manual gearbox and no-nonsense style. There are rumours though that next year could be the end of the line for the fiery Detroit legend in another victory for the automatons. Britain’s doing its bit with Leicestershire’s handbuilt Noble M600, which famously beat the Bugatti Veyron on Topgear and has a six-speed manual transmission. Priced considerably more than

€400,000 on the continent, it’s certainly a stretch but, with classic cars fetching astronomical sums at auction these days, likely a fine investment. You can even find a manual gearbox in the new Jaguar F-Type, though it’s an eye-wateringly expensive €60,000 adaptation. Even the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S went offered a seven-speed option with a difficult dog-leg shift pattern.

Miscellaneous motoring madness IT was another tragicomic week on the always entertaining American roads filled with different oddities, triumphs and catastrophic embarrassments. A Virginian woman wielding a red convertible Mercedes 380 SL became an internet phenomenon when she somehow managed to reverse right over the bonnet of a gleaming €270,000 Ferrari while parallel parking, despite having ample room. A bemused crowd gathered but the unfortunate Ferrari owner was nowhere to be seen. Both cars participated in a weekly car enthusiast get together around the corner. Meanwhile a McLaren MP4-12C driver won compensation for being ‘deprived of the enjoyment’ of driving his favourite car after it was damaged by a tractor. Despite having a BMW 5 Series, Range Rover, and a pair of Aston Martins, the furious driver convinced the court that the

IT was a beautiful summer’s day with a good crowd for August. Pete will be sorry he missed it! A strong contingent from Baviera was repulsed by Anoreta with all prizes going to the ‘home’ players. The overall winner was Barry Taylor with an excellent score of 40 points.

A select few played millionaire’s golf on a beautiful sunny day with gentle cooling breezes. The course is in really nice condition despite the long dry summer. Winners by less than two shots with a net score of 61.7 were Mike Elsey, Robert Durston, PJ Bentley-Ennis, and Ian Paterson each of whom won an interesting bottle of red wine from a boutique winery in the Sierra Nevada.

Who are Gins? GINS was founded when four keen golfers who played with the International Golf Society in Malaga felt the need to play nearer home. With only two nine hole courses then east of Malaga GINS opted to play mainly at Los Moriscos, Solebreña near Motril. The Nerja area was becoming popular for tourists with the ground breaking Capistrano Village putting it on the map and along with the new concept of expats, they saw potential for a golf society. A multinational group of between 100 and 200 members, friends and visitors from around Europe play weekly at Añoreta, Baviera and Los Moriscos and monthly during winter at one of the Granada courses, with further ad hoc ‘away days’ and an annual away trip and a multi-day outing further afield. Course reps provide emailed ‘T’ off times at each course, all you have to do is phone or email to put your name down and arrive ½ hour before your play on the day! Many games are sponsored by both commercial ventures and members. Membership is always open, providing discounted golf in eastern Costa del Sol, so visit El Puente or the website ginsgolf.com to join. Ken Hanks, the late Alan Hazlehurst, Dickie Williams and Tony Godfrey attracted 35 members at their first meeting, a number which in 2016 exceeds 300. The first rule of the Society is ‘it exists for the enjoyment of golf by anyone wishing to play it in and around the Nerja area of Spain.’ They play golf in a variety of formats and have a great social calendar for members and partners: traditional golfer’s Christmas dinner dance, captain’s dinner dance, treasure hunts, quizzes, pétanque, race nights, walks, etc on a regular basis. GINS is a fully constituted Spanish Society and a Federated Society of the La Real Federación Andaluza de Golf part of the National Federation. They play in accordance with the Rules of Golf and adhere to CONGU Handicapping System.
