Magnificent Moors and Christians By Adele Land Mojacar’s Moors and Christians weekend was a great success, according to visitors, business owners and participants. Hundreds of people flocked to enjoy the three-day event, which loosely re-enacts the battle between two cultures in centuries gone by. Adults and children from all parts of the Mojacar community spent months planning for this much-anticipated weekend, which takes place on the beach and in the pueblo every June. Friday saw the grand ceremony when the Moorish and Christian kings greet each other with solemn speeches, and hand over the keys to the city. The young prince and princess from each side also addressed the crowd and exchanged gifts as part of the opening ceremony. The revelry continued until the early hours with live music and DJs cranking up the atmosphere, as visitors joined in the parties at the various ‘kabilas’ and ‘cuartels’ (camps) set up throughout the village. Time for a dip ALBOX Council has announced the dates that the municipal swimming pools will be opened to the public for the summer season. This year prices have not gone up and more activities will be offered. See page 63 fered an array of gifts, jewellery, handicrafts and tasty food and pastries, with bars and restaurants open until late. On Saturday, the beach was packed for the spectacular jousting performance, where experienced riders put on a fantastic equestrian display before joining the parade to the Parque Comercial. Visitors woke on Sunday morning to the sound of blunderbusses being fired into the sky before the early evening grand finale and main parade. The crowd was wowed by

the magnificent costumes and lively music of the parade, which began at the Plaza Nueva and continued down to the fountain. People were keen to ensure a good viewing spot with restau-

rants in the square fully booked since as early as February. Business owners reported an excellent weekend of trading and that the Friday night had been the busiest for the fiesta in a number of years.

Help needed AGE SUPPORT Almanzora recently hosted a stall at Arboleas market to offer advice on their services and recruit new volunteers. The charity supports older people living in Albox and the rest of the Almanzora valley area, and always needs more assistance. See page 65

ALMERIA’s debaters of the future have taken part in a school tournament held in Cuevas del Almanzora. The tournament was part of a scheme developed by Cuevas-Olula school and supported by Cuevas Council and the Almeria Parents’ Federation (FAPACE) and teams from Alto Almanzora secondary school in Tijola and Mar Serena secondary school in Pulpi competed, while teachers and students from other schools in Macael, Olula del Rio and Albox attended as spectators. The topic the students debated was ‘Social media: does it facilitate or obstruct communication?’ The winning team was Mar Serena’s first higher secondary team, consisting of Alba Navarro, Cristobal Luis Caceres, Samuel Perez and Angeles Rodriguez, and diplomas for best speakers

Big brother is watching By Eleanor Hawkins ALMOST 1,900 property owners in the Cuevas de Almanzora area have received letters recently informing them that there are constructions on their land which do not figure on the property register and advising them to visit the town hall for information. The letters, which sparked outrage amongst locals and caused the council to issue a statement explaining that the town hall is merely an information point and the measure has nothing to do with the local authorities, have been sent out by the taxman following helicopter surveillance last year. The flights were part of a nationwide scheme to track construction work such as extensions and swimming pools which have not been officially added to the Catastro (property registry), meaning that owners are p ay in g lo w e r tax es th a n

Local Economy and Treasury Councillor Maria Isabel Alarcon explained that it is possible that owners had in fact declared their extensions, etc. but the records had not been updated correctly.

Alarcon was asked how much extra the council was expecting to earn in taxes following the changes but replied that until the process is complete it is impossible to say.

Opposition slams council over paseo opening By Adele Land SOCIALIST opposition group, PSOE, in Mojacar has accused the town council of using the opening of the new section of the paseo for “electoral purposes.” Spokesman, Manuel Zamora, said the event “circumvented electoral law” which prevents all types of similar events during the run up to an election. Spanish general elections take place again on June 26 after parties failed to form a government after the original elections in December 2015. Zamora also referred to the ‘hypocrisy” of members of the provincial government including president, Gabriel Amat, for attending the event, lamenting the provincial council’s investment of €130,000 leaving the remaining €860,000 to be paid by the town council. The opposition councillor said that the new section of the

paseo was positive for the town but added it could have been better managed financially. He also echoed the voices of

a number of residents who complained the issue of parking problems in the area had not been properly addressed.

Boost via internet THE Almanzora area is receiving extra promotion on the internet following a recent event organised by Lucar’s Guadalinfo Centre. More than 50 people took part in a classic car rally with a difference, as they toured the area taking photos and videos which were uploaded onto the internet. It is hoped that this will attract more tourists to the area.

Football excuse for alleged thief By Eleanor Hawkins

A MAN arrested after allegedly breaking into an industrial warehouse in Olula del Rio told Guardia Civil officers he was just looking for a flagpole so he could celebrate his football team’s victory. The police force reported that a patrol was sent to the warehouse in the Las Entrenadas area after an alarm

went off , and spot t ed t he 45-year-old man coming out of the building. When asked, he claimed he was “just looking for something to fly a flag for because his team had won,” however upon inspection the officers found that the back door had been forced off its hinges and arrested him for suspected burglary. The case has been placed in the hands of the court in Purchena.

Promising summer prospects

By Eleanor Hawkins TEN streets in Albox are to have their looks and conditions improved for drivers thanks to an imminent new paving plan announced by the local council. The town hall revealed that various busy streets in the centra l a r e a o f t h e t o w n h a v e b e e n in clu d e d in the scheme, along with Terdiguera industrial estate and districts and that there is a budget of about €70,000 for the work. Local Mayor Sonia Cerdan said: “this scheme will fix and sort out 10 streets across Albox, meeting the requests of local residents’ and businesses, and we intend to continue with the work on other streets in the future.” The streets within the town due to receive new tarmac are Calles Alfarerias, Grenoble and Poeta Villaespesa and parts of the San Antonio, La Loma districts plus Camino de Bancalejo and Los Quiles. Various roads in Terdiguera industrial estate will also benefit from the scheme, as promised by the council at a meeting with representatives of the companies housed there in April. “Following improvements to street lighting, over the next few weeks improvements to road surfaces and cleaning services will arrive in the important industrial area a s we a g r e e d w ith th e b u s in es s e s , ” th e ma y o r promised.

ALMERIA Province has great expectations for this summer as it is already well on its way to breaking all its tourism records. So far this year, according to Junta de Andalucia regional government data, the number of tourists who have stayed in hotels in the province has increased by 21 per cent. This is not just the highest increase ever registered in Almeria, is it also almost double the increase registered for Andalucia, currently at 12 per cent. “We’ve improved in our fight a ga ins t s e a s ona l slumps and it shows,” said Tourism and Sports delegate Francisco Javier Fernandez, who did however say that there is always room for improvement.

Robotics fair attracts a crowd MORE than 500 people attended Huercal-Overa’s first Robotics, Drones and Technology fair held at the weekend at the local sports centre. The event was focused on all things to do with technology, robotics, drones and 3D printing and caught the attention of

many local youngsters who are developing their knowledge, creativity, logical thinking and ability to work in a team at workshops and courses at the Guadalinfo Centre. On Friday (June 10) fifth and sixth year pupils from local primary schools visited the

fair and were introduced to 3D printing, drones and robotics with flight simulators and games. On the Saturday the doors were open to the general public, with youngsters and their parents flocking to see a drone race and have their first experiences in virtual reality. The fair also hosted Huercal-Overa’s first educational robotics competition, which pupils from the Guadalinfo Centre’s robotics course took part in. The event was closed by local Mayor Domingo Fernandez who, accompanied by Education and Youth Councillor Belen Martinez, Citizens Participation Councillor Maribel Sanchez and Almeria Education delegate Francisca Lourdes Fernandez, presented the winners and other pupils with diplomas. The mayor explained that the robotics courses, which are now in their second year, have been well received in the town and more than 50 youngsters now attend.

Local residents concerned over animal cruelty By Eleanor Hawkins LOCAL residents and animal charities in Nijar have expressed fears that a group of people could be targeting animals following a number of recent incidents.

Over the last two months there has been a wave of violence against dogs and cats in the San Isidro district which locals are worried could be the work of a group who pick up strays and pets they find loose and torture them.

Pupekas animal charity posted on its Facebook page: “These are not isolated cases, locals are afraid, we have psychopaths loose amongst us and if something isn’t done to stop them who knows what they’ll do next.” The authorities have said they are aware of

the incidents and the Guardia Civil is investigating three cases, while the council reported that more Local Police patrols have been ordered to visit areas where pets are often abandoned in an attempt to have them collected before they can be targeted by cruel individuals.

Woman faces jail for attempted homicide THE Public Prosecutor is requesting a nine-year jail sentence for a 30-year-old woman who allegedly tried to kill a man outside a disco in Velez Rubio at 2am on March 3, 2012. The prosecution stated the accused was inside a car with a group of people when she yelled for the driver to stop outside the disco where she jumped out, attacking the victim, who was standing outside the door, with a sharp object. The victim required emergency surgery and spent four days in Torrecardenas hospital.

Clearing the fire risks TO keep the risk of forest fire to a minimum, Endesa electrical company has spent more than €536,000 this year on cutting back trees and clearing fire breaks in the areas surrounding its electrical cables in Almeria Province. The company has cleared areas around almost 300km of electricity lines and carries out a summer plan every year at the start of the hot season to keep the risk of cables causing fires as low as possible.

Is Your UK Property Worth Its Weight In Tax? For British expatriates, it may seem like financial sense to keep your house in the UK. However, recent changes have generally increased the tax burden for owners of UK residential properties. Capital gains tax This April, UK capital gains tax decreased by 8%... with one exception. UK residents still pay 28% or 18% on gains from residential property. Since last year, nonresidents are also charged – they pay Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax (NRCGT) on gains accruing from 6th April 2015. Where a property is not held directly by an individual or trust, NRCGT rules are overridden by the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) regime. If a property fell into ATED before 6th April 2015, gains are calculated from the earlier date (April 2013 onwards). Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) If you hold a UK residential

This has affected properties worth over £2m since 2013, but from April 2016 it captures properties valued from £500,000. With the average London house costing £530,000, ATED could affect a large proportion of indirectly-owned properties in the capital. Rates range from £3,500 to £218,200 for properties worth over £20m. The ATED-related capital gains

tax threshold also dropped to £500,000 in April. Although aimed at companies, the 28% charge is higher than the usual corporation tax rate. ATED-related gains rules supersede the corporation tax regime as they do with NonResident Capital Gains Tax. Previously, keeping UK residential property within a corporate structure was attractive because of the UK inheritance tax benefits, but this is set to change. Inheritance tax From next April, the government intends to make all UK residential property held by a foreign domiciliary liable for inheritance tax. If this goes ahead, nonresidents owning UK property – directly or indirectly – will pay inheritance tax on the property in the same way a UK-domiciled individual would. This will apply to all UK residential property regardless of value, whether it is occupied or let.

Principal Private Residence relief (PPR) Now it is much harder for nonresidents with UK property and UK residents with property abroad to benefit from PPR tax relief. From 6th April 2015, your property generally only qualifies for PPR relief if it is in the territory where you are also tax resident. However, you may be eligible if you spend at least 90 days of the tax year in the property. If you cannot meet these conditions, no relief is available.

A first stroll along the prom By Adele Land MORE than 200 people turned out last Wednesday (June 8) to mark the opening of the new phase two section of the paseo in Mojacar.

Although an ‘official’ inauguration could not take place due to rules relating to the upcoming Spanish general elections, mayor Rosa Maria Cano, invited visitors and residents to join her in the first

walk on the new facility. Workers spent the day removing construction fences, cleaning and planting the final shrubs just in time for the 8pm start. People of all nationalities participated in the much-anticipated event which began at the Cueva de Lobo section of the paseo. Over the past few months, social media was awash with chatter of people speculating when the new section would open. A number of dignitaries, including Partido Popular (PP) deputy, Rafael Hernando, and head of the Provincial Council, Gabriel Amat, also attended and walked the length of the promenade along with Cano and her team of councillors. During the visit, Hernando confirmed that the government would support plans for the third phase of the promenade, for which documents have already been submitted to the ministry of the environment.

PROMENADING: An evening stroll with Mojacar mayor. The new section, which cost some €990,000, extended the promenade by 880 metres and runs from Cueva de Lobo to the Red Cross roundabout. The pathway is approximately eight metres wide at its largest point and includes a

cycle lane, landscaping, access to showers and parking for 59 vehicles. During a ceremony in March 2015 to lay the first stone, a ‘time capsule’ was buried. The plastic sealed box, con-

tained a selection of the day’s newspapers, coins minted in 2015 and a letter signed by all the attending dignitaries. The new section took just over a year to complete with a break from construction during the busy summer months.

Pig killers jail time is suggested THE Public Prosecutor has requested 18 and 12 month jail sentences for two young men accused of squashing and killing 79 piglets at a farm in Huercal-Overa in January. Nineteen-year-old DAA has been accused of jumping and throwing himself on the seven-day old pigs in a corridor while 22-year-old MR is believed to have filmed the slaughter with a mobile phone, and done nothing to stop his co-worker ’s cruel act. Fines of €12 per day for 12 months have also been requested, along with €4,740 in compensation for financial losses for the farm owner.

Jail requested for fraudsters By Eleanor Hawkins THE Public Prosecutor intends to request seven-year jail sentences for JSG and JIMG, two administrators of a real estate business

The two, the prosecution has stated, agreed to take over the land in question from its owners in exchange for two flats and a garage space in the future building, and took deposits from four prospec-

sentences, the prosecution has requested fines of €12 per day for 18 months and compensation of €86,201 in total for the customers affected by the pairs fraudulent activities.

Children clean up beach A GROUP of 50 pupils from Nijar’s La Atalaya infant and primary school were taken for a day out at the beach last week, however they were not there to swim or sunbathe. The children were taking part in Colillas Special Edition, an environmental activity organised by the school to mark World Oceans Day. Upon arrival at Aguamarga, in Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, the children were given the challenge of collecting as many cigarette ends from the sand as they could using butterfly nets. The aim of the trip was to raise awareness of the impor-

Homeowners meet the Andalucian parliamentarians

MEETING: Representatives of the groups involved met to discuss the situation. REPRESENTATIVES of the associations SOHA (Save Our Homes in Axarquia), AUAN (Association of those affected Almeria) and the Confederation CALU (Confederation of those affected in Cordoba) met with representatives of the political groups in the Andalucian Parliament in Sevilla on June 8, in order to clarify their positions with respect to the amendments to the LOUA (urban planning law of Andalucia) concerning the parcellations on non-urbanisable land. Philip Smalley, President of SOHA, was optimistic after meeting with representatives of the political parties: Ciudadanos, PSOE, Podemos, Izquierda Unida and Partido Popular, who understood the situation, and have seemed willing to w ork o n t h e a m e n d men ts and discuss them in Committee next Tuesday, June 14. “It’s a job we have been doing for more than eight years, and on this amendment in particular, we have been working two years, and fin a l l y we se e t hat it will be voted on in Parlia-

ment in July.” he added. He went on to explain that the problem is that while buildings on non-urbanisable land can eventually be regularised, buildings on the same type of land which has been parcelled for building purposes can never ‘prescribe’ (they can at any time be denounced and subjected to demolition procedures.) “Therefore we call on Parliament for the adoption of this amendment,” he concluded. The associations SOHA, AUAN and CALU, representing thousands of homes in an irregular situation with respect to the regulations in Andalucia, submitted their amendments on March 9, 2016. Later, at the end of May,

the associations formed a working method to collaborate with the Junta de Andalucia regional government to facilitate the processing of these amendments. SOHA is a non-profit association, made up of mainly foreign residents, whose mission is to promote the protection of the rights of residents in the Axarquia Region, according to article eight of the European Convention on human rights, to help other residents to protect their homes through legal action or other actions, and conduct active campaigns to promote amnesty to homeowners of the Axarquia. SOHA was established in 2008 with the sole purpose of saving their homes through peaceful means.

Reduced waiting time THE wait for heart surgery through the Andalucian Public Health System (SAS) may not exceed 90 days following publication of a notice to that effect in the regional government’s Official Bulletin. The news that waiting times for heart surgery were to be reduced was announced by Health Department head Aquilino Alonso last October, however the measure has only kicked in now that the official publication has been made.

Elderly driver causes chaos By Eleanor Hawkins AN elderly driver unwittingly caused havoc on the A7 motorway on Thursday morning (June 9) when he ended up on the wrong side and continued for more than 30 kilometres before being stopped by the police. More than 80 calls were registered by 112 emergency services and the Guardia Civil just after 10.30am as witnesses and drivers rang in to report that a car was heading from Los Gallardos towards Murcia on the wrong

side of the road. Two Guardia Civil patrols were immediately dispatched, one to close off the motorway to avoid any more traffic meeting the car head on while another was sent to stop him, which it managed to do at kilometre 551 in the municipality of Huercal-Overa. Shifting storm sands GARRUCHA Council is preparing for summer by carrying out work to redistribute the sand on its beaches and get them ready for bathers. Diggers and lorries spent three days last week moving excess sand, which had been pushed onto Playa del Posito by

recent storms, back to the centre of Playa de las Escobetas. An estimated 4,000 cubic metres of sand have been moved, leaving the beaches almost ready to receive the expected influx of locals and tourists. “The good weather is already attracting people to the beach

and we have to ask for pacience, this work won’t take long and it will be worth it,” the council said. Although Garrucha has not been awarded any Q for Quality flags this year, the council has pledged to start working now to obtain them next year.

Bumper season is starting to warm up THE Almeria coast is expecting an extra 36,000 tourists from 11 European countries thanks to a campaign awarded to Sehrs Tourism to attract more visitors. The contract for the campaign stipulates that the tour operator must guarantee that visitors stay at least five nights each and lay on day trips to areas of interest, and Sehrs will be flying in 21 flights per week from places including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Portugal and Holland between June and November. Locals are tired of being in the dark THE village of Maria, in the Los Velez area, has had enough of faulty electrics and is seriously considering holding demonstrations and taking legal action against Endesa electrical company. “People have run out of patience over the dreadful service. On Thursday (June 9) there was no electricity for almost six hours, and one morning in February there were 50 cuts in one morning,” the town hall reported.

Local Mayor Francisco Martinez has stated that the situation is ludicrous and blamed it on a complete lack of spending on installations in the area on Endesa’s part. “We’re going to discuss whether we should hold demonstrations, take legal action and demand compensation,” Martinez said, insisting that not only are local residents affected but the situation is also holding back the village’s financial growth.

Jailed for violent attack A SENEGALESE man has been jailed for four years and

one month for attacking a Guardia Civil officer, who asked for his ID, with a knife and also injuring two more officers who tried to arrest him later the same day. The accused has also been fined six euros per day for two months and must pay €2,545 in compensation to the officer. The incident in question occurred at 10am on August 8, 2014, when patrolling offi-

cers asked to see the man’s ID on a Nijar street. Instead, he pulled a knife out of his pocket and waved it about trying to escape, injuring one of the officers. The second officer tried to restrain him, but the accused bit his hand and escaped. An hour later another patrol went to his home to arrest him and another officer was injured in the struggle.

Visit for street savvy youngsters By Eleanor Hawkins FIFTH year pupils from Huercal-Overa’s San Jose de Calasanz school are the latest to have visited the Local Police station to see how the place works and receive their diplomas after completing a road safety course. The programme, run by the local council’s Citizen’s Security and Education departments, aims to teach Huercal’s children how to

behave on the public street while on foot or bicycle and raise their awareness of the importance of following the rules and what those rules are. The children were accompanied on their visit by Deputy Mayor Maribel Sanchez and Education Councillor Belen Martinez, who awarded them with their diplomas to prove they have passed the course. The visit gave an insight into what goes on at the

police station and what an officer’s day-to-day work consists of, however the highlight of the day was as usual an introduction to the force’s canine unit, which the youngsters always look forward to. Sanchez thanked the police officers for their work on the programme and explained that the council is already planning next year’s courses with new activities in the pipeline.

Sneaky thief A THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD air conditioning engineer from Churriana de la Vega in Granada has been arrested in Sorbas by the Guardia Civil suspected of being behind thefts of €49,200 worth of copper and other items from 13 telecommunications stations in Almeria. After a theft from a station in Lubrin, the Guardia Civil began investigating and noted that thefts from other stations in Garrucha, Carboneras, Vicar, Cuevas del Almanzora, Huercal-Overa, Nijar, Laujar de Andarax, Adra and Tabernas all had the same modus operandi. It’s claimed the suspect knew the stations, what was kept there, had keys to some and even had a maintenance worker’s uniform.

LED cheaper, better, brighter By Eleanor Hawkins CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA’S public buildings will have cheaper, better, brighter lights thanks to a council scheme which will spend €12,832 on replacing all the lightbulbs in its municipal premises with LED ones. This, the council explained, will reduce the amount of electricity used by up to 70 per cent. The first buildings to receive attention have been the town hall, Casa Torcuato Soler Bolea and Convento de San Francisco, which houses the municipal music, dance and drama school. THE latest technology is set to arrive in Antas, as the council has agreed to join Telefonica España’s scheme to bring fibre optics to the people all over the country. The initiative, local mayor Isabel Belmonte explained, will bring a significant improvement to communications in the municipality and is a much awaited breakthrough for businesses in particular. Fibre optics will gradually replace the current copper cables in the area, including the two industrial estates (El Real and Aljoroque) allowing internet connections of up to 300 megabytes per second. The work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The first outing began at 7.30pm at the El Calvari chapel’s picnic area with a talk on locating the constellations that are visible throughout the year in the northern hemisphere as well as the Summer Triangle. From here the party climbed from the chapel up to the geodesic marker, learning more about the marker itself as well as the different types of twilight - civil, nautical and astronomical - and how to find the cardinal points. The final part of the Stargazers’ Route ended with authentic stargazing with telescopes before coming down to earth and returning home at 12.30am.

INCREASED PROFITS: Flybe is the largest independent regional airline in Europe.

UK local and regional airline Flybe has announced that following a poor 2014, when it made a loss of £35.6 million (€45 million), it has recovered in 2015 with pre-tax annual profits of £2.7 million (€3.4 million). Based in Exeter and with more than 60 destinations, it is the largest independent regional airline in Europe, serving mainly UK destinations, although i t a l so f l i e s t o A ms te rd am, Dublin and Paris, and by expanding its routes the airlines has managed to increase the number of passengers carried by more than 5 per cent.

As is to be expected and in common with many other airlines, Flybe has benefitted from the reduced oil prices, with considerable savings over anticipated costs, and income had increased to £624 million (€792 million) despite the fact that sales had been affected by the terrorist activity in Paris and competition over fares from other airlines. much more resilient business and well positioned for profitable growth.” The underlying problem for all airlines nowadays is the cost of fuel, but the good news for them is that whilst OPEC and other oil producers are maintaining or increasing production, it appears unlikely that prices will shoot up in the foreseeable future, especially as Iran is desperate to sell its oil now that sanctions have been mainly removed. WE all think that time passes more quickly with the passage of years, but I am convinced that time actually does accelerate as we get older. As kids, the summer holiday sauntered along and we filled our long days with fishing or getting on our bikes and disappearing until sundown, and my recollection is that almost every day of those six weeks really was warm and sunny. Likewise winter, when snow would come and then lay around for weeks on end, with the snowman in the back garden standing sentinel until his nose fell off and he wet his pants in anticipation of spring. Life stuck to its proper order and it was good. The only annoyance was listening to our parents

FAST FORWARD: Life’s too short so don’t waste a minute. telling us to make something of our lives, because, they assured us, our youth would soon be gone. They kept harping on about life being short and not wasting a minute of it.

‘Leave it out’ we thought. ‘We’ve got years and years.’ Then in my 20s my house mates and I believed that there was still plenty of time to knuckle down and become millionaires.

We didn’t own a telly because every night we were out partying and playing best-of-three on the bar ’s tennis machine for female American tourists; then squeezing in a few hours on

the beach at weekends. Then zzzzzip! We went to bed one night, and woke up in the future. Where had the years gone? Now I try to reassure myself that I am ageing well, but one look in the mirror every morning only to be greeted by a bug-eyed stranger, tells me otherwise. These days instead of leaving the bar because I have drunk the place dry, I leave because I am tired, and invitations out are often weighed up alongside the prospect of Midsomer Murders on TV. In my head I hear again my parent’s words of wisdom: ‘Life is short’ they say. But am I listening now? Yep, you can take that to the nearest branch of Santander!

There is strong evidence that the attack was motivated by homophobia. The gunman’s own father has stated in the media that his son consistently demonstrated a deeprooted hatred of homosexuals, even going so far as to cite a recent incident in which the shooter saw two men kissing and flew into a rage. A human life is a human life, regardless of skin colour, sexual orientation, gender, or any other factor, and massacres such as the one in Orlando should be treated as such: a devastating blow not only to the gay community, but to the whole city and the human race in general. That being said, it is important to acknowledge that in 2016, there are still countless crimes which are motivated purely by intolerance, hatred, and prejudice. At the end of the day, this was a pointless massacre of a large number of innocents who deserved to be allowed to live their lives as they wanted and once again it raises the question of the easy availability of lethal weapons in the USA. Regardless of individual views the whole world has offered sympathy and comfort by demonstrations and vigils to ensure that the victims are remembered forever.

Trading simple Spanish lunches for a taste of the finest English dinners! Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

IN the late 70’s I discovered that the visiting English were absolutely reluctant to buy property in Spain, especially from an English speaking overly casual American. Yet I surmised that possible buyers might be more open if I should re-meet them back in England sporting a coat and tie and toned down vernacular. It worked wonders. So, within a few months I had fine tuned the sales presentation and allowed Spain to sell itself. During that epoch one of the most interesting restaurants trading in our area was the Cortijo Suesa. You had to know someone quite well to be able to find the place. The food was simple and served in a rustic setting. Ironically the attraction of the place was the unlimited rivers of

ENGLISH CUISINE: A hearty and filling pie. wine that flowed unaccountably. Against the interior wall stood large wooden casks named: Son, Mother, Father, and Grandfather and each increasing its potency with age. The food flowed like a medieval banquet, dogs wandered in and cats

were chased out. Each participant, whether he knew it or not, would drink buckets without giving it a thought. Well, as I got to understand the times better Suesa became the Sunday watering hole and an integral

part of the authentic Mojacar experience (although located some 15 kms away near Alfaix). The owners soon became friends and were ecstatic at getting a guaranteed 15-40 visitors each weekend. I selected my guests carefully mixing in plenty local folk with the unsuspecting clients. Within a month I would be visiting each possible buyer in England and continue to press the gilded benefits of owning something in Spain. On the English behalf, being a Yank they presumed I had never enjoyed or understood full English hospitality. What a rush that was. Only the finest wines, Champagnes and cuisine would touch my lips. It was a subliminal patriotic act performed to equal that spectacular lunch that I had entertained them. If I hadn’t spoken with my American twang it might have been less of an effort, but it never was. I was punished in the most wonderful of ways, driven about and shown the local

Put the ‘Great’ back in Britain THE doom and gloom stories that abound if we leave the EU are becoming quite preposterous. Collapse of the housing market, inflation at 7 per cent or more, jobs will dry up, factories will close. What a lot of nonsense. The latest block of apartments in London to go to the market, 50 per cent have been snapped up by overseas buyers. The Nissan factory at Sunderland turns out a Qashqai Mark II every 62 seconds, 52 days a week, 24 hours per day besides the other makes and models they produce in huge numbers. Does anyone really believe they will close the factory and set up elsewhere? Never. This government has made cutbacks on just about everything, including the fuel allowance for expats to try and balance the economy and it never will as long as we are giving £350 million per week to the EU. Hospitals are at breaking point, not enough doctors and nurses. Police numbers are down, yet crime is up. Prisons are short-staffed and bursting with foreign criminals we can’t deport. Macedonia, Montenegro Serbia and Albania have been promised acceptance to join and the UK has been asked (ordered) to pay in a further £2 billion per year to bring them up to standard. Turkey have been promised travel visas so we can expect a good size of the 75 million Muslims to swell the over 400 Mosques already in London. This is madness. We must vote to leave the EU now and start to govern ourselves. Put the ‘Great’ back in Britain and trade with all the world. Work standing up Too many of us live very sedentary lifestyles and now a number of employers are introducing desks for workers to be able to stand up at. Being able to move around isn’t just good from a physical perspective, it’s also good for your emotional wellbeing. However, a senior lecturer in the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease at the University of Liverpool believes everyone must find their balance between a healthy lifestyle and the pleasures from indulging in the occasional unhealthy habits as being happy can ultimately help you live a longer and healthier life. This week, as the summer weather appears to be here to stay now, we decided to ask the doctor about heatstroke, a serious risk for children and the elderly particularly at this time of year in Spain. WHAT exactly is heatstroke? When doctors speak of heatstroke, we are referring to an overexposure to high temperatures which happens mostly at hot times of year during the central hours of the day. Generally, patients who suffer heatstroke were carrying out physical exercise which, combined with the high temperature, produced an increase in body temperature that can make many organs and systems within the human body fail. What should I do if I, or someone with me, start noticing symptoms of heatstroke? The first thing to do is to stop any physical activity or exercise being carried out at the time. Then the person affected should stay in a cool place and drink lots of liquids (water or isotonic drinks). If this doesn’t help alleviate the symptoms, med-

ical attention should be sought. How can I avoid it happening to me? You can reduce the risk of suffering from heatstroke by avoiding exposing yourself to high temperatures and refraining from carrying out intense physical activities during the hottest hours of the day. Are some people more likely to suffer heatstroke than others? Why? People in good physical condition and used to strenuous physical activity are less likely to suffer as their bodies are better prepared. Children and the elderly, on the other hand, have fewer defences against the heat and are more prone to suffering, therefore they should be monitored closely in extreme heat and encouraged to stay in the shade and drink lots of water.

Raising funds for the rescue dogs

NOW LOVED: Charlie found his forever home.

DOG charity, Maz’s canine rescue, ha s c ome up w ith a ne w w a y of raising much-needed funds. The c e ntre ha s ope ne d w ha t it calls a £2.80 or €3.60 club where members donate that amount each month. Maz has been rescuing dogs in the area for 15 years. The dogs she finds come to her with no hope in their eyes, and have shut down from the world. At the moment she has 93 dogs in her rescue kennels. Recently nine of her rescue dogs set off to their new homes in the UK. These were all dogs doomed to die and would have done so without the intervention of Maz. Maz has a wish list, to buy the kennels she currently rents at Tijola. This she feels would help secure the future of the dogs. Despite the hard work, there are

many happy stories to share of dogs in their forever homes.

A night of classical music under the stars A MUCH-ANTICIPATED classical music concert is scheduled to take place in Cabrera this month. In 2015, the Cabrera Social Committee decided to put on an evening concert of classical music, under the stars in the beautiful setting of Cabrera, high in the mountains. The event was called the Starlight Concert, and featured concert pianist Pedro Valero, tenor Antonio Magno, and a leading soprano. For the event, a concert grand piano was delivered all the way up the mountain, all the publicity was done, and everything was in place, then the rain started. Torrential rain was forecast for the whole weekend, so Los Pastores’ marquee was rapidly erected before the piano arrived, and the gaps in the roof were filled in with tape. Although many people got very wet, either just sitting in the audience or walking to Los Pastores for a drink, it was a huge success. Sadly, many people who had wanted to come were unable to get

Fishing report from local club ALBOX fishing club took to the beach again last week, seven members enjoyed a day’s fishing at the Repsol rocks on Monday June 6. The group reported a stiff south easterly breeze on a warm sunny day and a calm sea. Five members of the group caught fish. The best catch of the day went to Morris of M&M, with a 10-inch silema.

Taking a dip in Albox By Adele Land ALBOX Council has announced the summer opening dates of the town’s swimming pools. The sports centre pool and the pool in the Las Pocicas neighbourhood will open on June 24 and July 4 respectively. Prices will remain the same as last year with entrance for adults two euros

and for children one euro. Younger children can use the facility free of charge when accompanied by adults. Council workers are busy cleaning and preparing the swimming pools ready for opening and the sports centre pools will have the addition of a pergola to provide shade. Swimming classes will also be available in both pools, starting from July 18.

The opening of the pools forms part of the 2016 summer sports programme and coincides with the schools closing for the summer holidays. Sports councillor, Mario Torregrosa, said that this year’s sports programme will far exceed that of last year, while mayor, Sonia Cerdan, confirmed the council’s commitment to offering sports and activities in the town on a year-round basis.

It’s an industrial mess By Adele Land OPPOSITION group, Partido Popular (PP) in Albox has slammed the town council for what it calls “neglect” of the Terdiguera industrial estate. PP councillors and a group of business-

men toured the estate and complained that the streets are filled with weeds and dirt and that the lack of pavements is hazardous. The group also lamented the lack of adequate street lighting and pointed out that the drains were in a poor state of repair.

Spokesperson Pedro Quiles accused the governing council of wasting money in drafting a redevelopment plan in 2012 which never came to fruition. Quiles requested that mayor Sonia Cerdan take “urgent action” to rectify the situation.

Age Support needs new volunteers MEMBERS of the Age Support Almanzora welfare team hosted a stall at the Arboleas market, outside the Age Support shop, to offer advice on the services they offer and also to recruit new volunteers. The registered charity has been providing support services since 2013 for older people living in the Almanzora valley area. Those who use the service are people who need to borrow mobility aids such as wheelchairs, those recently bereaved, stroke-victims, people who are experiencing loneliness, people with serious health problems or who have been recently discharged from hospital, basically anyone who needs support. The volunteers also assist with advice and help with accessing UK benefits such as attendance allowance. The team is led by Steph who usually does the initial assessment to determine what help is needed, weekly visits may then follow. Weekly assistance can include, grocery shopping, collecting prescriptions, keeping someone company and generally providing emotional and practical support.

The volunteers who work with Steph are retired teachers, care workers, shop workers, all from different backgrounds, they offer a minimum of two to three hours per week and training is of course provided. More volunteers are always needed, if you think you can help in any way, please call into the office to find out more. The volunteers find their work rewarding and all have the support of Steph and her team. The welfare team’s future goal is to set up a hospital library service at Huercal-Overa hospital in order to reach people who may be nervous about how they are going to manage when they get home following a serious illness or surgery. The workshops, Almeria Provincial Council’s Equality delegate Dolores Martinez explained, are run all over the province with topics including drama, music, painting, photography and many more, with the most popular this year proving to be painting, choral music and drama. The artistic painting classes held in Oria, local Mayor Marcos Reche explained, aimed to help women learn how to express themselves on canvas and discover basic techniques which they will be able to enlarge upon in the future. Marble school prepares to return to norm WORKERS’ protests look to be a thing of the past as the regional government has announced that classes will begin again at the Andalucia Marble School in Fines in September. Provincial delegate for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment at the Junta de Andalucia regional government Miguel Angel Tortosa confirmed that normal classes would be resumed in September following an application period in July and August. The classes will restart in September, later than was originally hoped, due to various changes in the school’s programme, the delegate explained. Although not a part of its usual academic programme, the Fines Marble School facility also hosted a workshop on Shared Knowledge which was organised by the Open University of Cataluña during last week. In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man FOR you who think being grumpy and having a moan is easy, you should know that it has to be used in the right circumstances, because if used by the wrong person, to the wrong person, at the wrong time the outcome can be, to say the least, disastrous. To quote the late, great Max Bygraves, “I’m going to tell you a story.” It was told to me by the man that was allegedly there when it happened. He was in a line checking in for an international flight with one of the big American airlines. He was travelling Club Class and in front of him there was a business man on his phone talking particularly loudly and giving it large about some deal he had done. The line wasn’t moving too fast and although it was a fraction of the normal length the bloke was moaning to whoever he was talking to. He got to the front of the line, put his bag on the scales and then started having a go at the check in lady. It wasn’t just a moan - he was being seriously rude having a go at her at the top of his

voice about all the things he thought were wrong and why wasn’t he entitled to an upgrade? He was annoyed about so many things and the young lady just kept smiling and very politely saying sorry about this and sorry that he wasn’t happy about that and he just kept yelling. Anyway eventually he goes and my friend checks in and says to her that he couldn’t believe how she kept so cool and didn’t just refuse to deal with him. Her reply was amazing. She explained that she never got mad with this type of customer but she did get even. My friend asked, “What do you mean”? She said that although that man was travelling to London …...she had sent his bags to Tokyo!! See what I mean? There was a person that thinks that being grumpy and having a moan works all the time. But it doesn’t! Another tip is to be careful about having a moan in restaurants and be particularly careful about sending food back. Obviously sometimes it has to be done but you don’t want that pizza coming back with any extra toppings on it! That reminds me of the story about the pizza restaurant owner found dead on the floor covered with ham, cheese, pepperoni, peppers, chicken and pineapple …. the police said they don’t know how he died but think he topped himself.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Intelligent road signs AS part of the series, we answer some common driving questions and keep you updated on the latest driving and road news kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers. A NEW wave of road signs is being installed across much of the main road network in Spain, as part of a multimillion euro investment scheme to make the roads safer. Illuminated signs offering more protection at roundabouts have already been installed on the infamous N-332 around Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca which flash in the direction of movement and triangular signs that flash orange to warn us of the approaching hazard. These sign groups have two units, one is the detector, the other the receptor and warning sign. When traffic flows freely the signs look like nothing more than a black square. But, when traffic is detected, the square displays an electronic version of the triangular P-31 road sign, warning of congestion, with flashing orange lights to attract attention. These are not the only intelligent signs being installed on the road network. In other areas of Spain a number of junctions have already had warning systems installed which tell drivers on the main carriageway that there is a vehicle at a junction ahead on a minor road likely to join or cross the flow of traffic. Sensors built into the road, similar to those used to monitor traffic flow, become aware of the presence of a vehicle at the junction. They are able to identify the size and type of vehicle, if needed, and send the information to the warning sign located on the m a i n c a r riage-

way, offering an extra set of eyes to the driver and the theoretical ability to see beyond bends and buildings ahead, reducing the surprise factor and, hopefully, reducing the risk. The ‘dynamic junction warning system’ uses low-cost technology to exchange information between the vehicle, infrastructure and back to the vehicle, aiming to warn of the proximity of vehicles at junctions. So far, four locations in Spain have these signs, chosen because of their high incident rate. Two are located in Madrid and León, the others in Navarra and A Coruña.

Help our feathered friends, think inside the box By Matt Ford AS the natural habitats of many bird species continue to take a pummelling, nest boxes are the ideal way to help our feathered friends flourish, and here are some tips on building your own.

In terms of materials, wood is the most suitable since it allows the box to breathe, helps maintain an ambient temperature, thus avoiding overheating and excess condensation. For long lasting boxes consider using hardwoods like beech or oak and

avoid treated wood that may leach chemicals and harm birds. Use wood at least 15mm thick to provide good insulation, while nails or screws should be galvanized to prevent rusting. Drill a couple of drainage holes in the base, and add a waterproof hinge to

the roof to allow for an annual clean once the occupants have moved out, but don’t add a perch as this may attract unwanted visitors. In terms of the access hole, the diameter depends on which species you want to attract, with 25 mm recom-

mended for small tits, 28 mm for great tits and flycatchers, 32 mm for house sparrows and nuthatches, and 45 mm for spotless starlings. For extra security, a clasp can be added to prevent predators from opening the box.

Non-toxic methods of weed control Dick Handscombe

I, LIKE an increasing number of expat gardeners in Spain, prefer to not use potent chemical weedkillers but at the same time want to avoid the back breaking task of continually hoeing, mattocking, hand pulling, hand trowelling and forking out weeds. Fortunately there are several things one can do when planning a new garden or modifying an existing one as outlined below. Ground cover plants Plant flowering and evergreen plants that will soon grow sideways and create deep shade below the green growth which will make it difficult for most weeds to germinate and survive. Covering areas to block out light for a few weeks One can use pieces of old carpet, old rugs or pieces of heavy grade black plastic sheeting to achieve this. Minimise planted areas Design the garden with smallish flower beds and shrubberies surround-

garden there are many ways of mulching plants once weeded to reduce the growing of new weeds. Solarisation I first saw this method being used extensively in the vegetable growing areas surrounding the city of Valencia

As outlined below the method is inexpensive, not labour intensive and relatively fast during the hottest months of the year. Having selected a well located area of the garden mark it out with posts or rocks and then buy a sheet of clear heavy grade plastic, the shape of the area to be cleared of weeds but a little larger. Then dig a 15 centimetre deep trench around the intended veggie plot. When this is done water the area and then immediately cover the damp weed covered soil with the plastic placing rocks on the plastic sheeting to prevent it being blown away. Then push the edges of the plastic into the trench and bury them. The area of soil will now be sealed and wind will not be able to get under the sheet of plastic.

Solarisation is a method used extensively in vegetable growing areas surrounding Valencia to control and kill off weeds but this can easily be used in your garden before planting up new areas. Now watch and wait as existing weeds wither, die and turn to dust and any seeds germinate and soon die back as the temperature rises to over a hundred degrees centigrade. During the hottest months of June to September everything should be totally burnt and turned to dust in six to eight weeks. Naturally during the winter an extra month or two will be necessary. By starting to use solarisation in the next few weeks you will have with a weed free area by the end of August that can be rotovated and enriched with well rotted composts ready for planting plantlets or sowing seeds in the early autumn. ACCORDING to a recent poll across 10 EU countries, euroscepticism is increasing across Europe. It found the strongest supporters of the EU were in Poland (72 per cent) and Hungary (61 per cent) - arguably the biggest net recipients of the EU budget - compared with just 27 per cent in Greece, 38 per cent (France) and 44 per cent (the UK). Enough euroscepticism in the UK to lead to Brexit? According to Daniel Kahneman, the influential economics Nobel laureate, simply “irritation and anger” may just do it: “The major impression one gets observing the debate is that the reasons for exit are clearly emotional. The arguments look shortterm and based on irritation and anger.

Hackers expose flaws A SERIOUS security breach has forced Mitsubishi to recall 100,000 Outlander hybrid cars after hackers managed to turn off the car’s alarm and drain its battery. The Outlander uses wifi to allow drivers to access and change certain features remotely but it is less secure than other methods such as the GSM web service. The hack was conducted by a security expert who works for consumer and driver interests in ensuring their cars and personal data is protected. He also found that hackers could locate a car they were interested in easily using the same technology. Cybersecurity is fast becoming of chief concern to engineers working on new generation interactive cars.

Manx 38 mile rally course record smashed MARK HIGGINS broke his own Isle of Man record for cars by completing the 38 mile course in a speedy 17 minutes and 35 seconds, at an average speed of 128.73 mph.

The time is a solid 80 seconds ahead of the previous official record Higgins set back in 2014. Driving a highly modified Subaru WRX STI with nearly 600 hp, Higgins had a mas-

sive advantage over his previous attempts in rustier vehicles. Higgins has won the British Rally Championship three times and is also a professional stunt driver but isn’t the fastest on

Pink parking AN unusual new parking experiment is being explored in China, although it has received mixed feedback. Officials have decided to create ‘female only’ parking spaces in a service lot. They claim that since women drivers frequently require the assistance of male security guards when parking, they might as well have their own specially designed spots.

With the same symbol as that found on female toilets, a pink border and 50 per cent larger than the average parking space, the spots are a godsend for stereotype and the sardonically minded. The decision has sparked debate across Chinese social media, with many people questioning whether it would make more sense to simply improve teaching methods during lessons.

JAGUAR caught the attention of motoring enthusiasts last year when it announced plans to finish the legendary XKSS 1957 series. A huge fire at the company World War Two era assembly

plant had destroyed nine of the 25 original models, leaving just 16 in existence, one of which was bought by Steve McQueen. Rebuilding those nine is expected to be a mountainous challenge but the firm expects completion in around six months and has already sold

the vehicles, at €1.3 million each, to private buyers. Original drawings and two original cars have allowed the engineers to create a digital representation of the manufacturing process, while McQueen’s model can be found in a Los Angeles museum valued at €26 million.

Nordic niche ALL petrol and diesel based cars could be banned in Norway by 2025 if a green government blueprint comes into effect. The Scandinavian country is looking to gradually phase out any non-electric vehicles, including hybrids, and expects that in a decade only electric or hydrogen fuel cell cars will be available for purchase. Eco cars are incredibly popular in the oil rich country which is known for implementing progressive policies and is one of the world’s most bicycle friendly nations.

Many good scores were recorded, but Zeta Denyer and Geoff Smith, with 39 points each, certainly mastered the course best. Zeta, playing her first game for almost a month, pipped Geoff into first place in Division two on a card countback, while Paco Grayal Ocaña took first place in division one with 37 points, from Doug Birrell on 34 points.
