Kitchen fire AN apartment building in Altea’s Calle la Trompa was evacuated after a fire broke out on the third floor. The blaze, affecting only a kitchen, was soon extinguished but four Local Police officers were taken to Villajoyosa hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The Guardia Civil is now investigating the exact causes of the fire.

Palm felled A CALIFORNIAN fan palm, the largest of its type remaining in the centre of Sax, was cut down by a Valencia-based construction company to make way

for a supermarket on the site of an old shoe factory. More than 60 years old and 20 metres tall, it was felled and sawn up without warning.

LA CALA: Getting ready for the high season with the reopening of the tourist assistance service. By Linda Hall FINESTRAT’S Tourist Assistance Service (SATE) has recommenced for the summer season and continues until September 30. The SATE office is located in the Local Police headquarters in La Cala and opens

from 9am to 3pm from Monday to Friday. Thanks to an agreement with the national government’s Ministry of the Interior, this is the third year that Finestrat offers this service, specifically aimed at helping foreign tourists who are victims of crime. The service is available in several lan-

guages, and the staff are specialists in the required procedures when reporting a crime, said Finestrat’s Public Safety Councillor David Alarcon. “We want our foreign tourists to feel protected if anything should happen to them and they need help with the paperwork and formalities.”

Water upgrade A NEW hydraulic pump has been installed that will pump water from pumping station number one in Avenida del Mediterraneo to number two in Avenida Montecarlo. Beach drama A SEVENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD had to be rescued from the sea in Benidorm. The woman responded to resuscitation by medics on the beach and was taken to Hospital Marina Baixa in Villajoyosa where she was put on Basic Life Support (BLS).

Bus death DESPITE resuscitation attempts, a bus driver died behind the wheel of his bus on the CV-70 between Benidorm and La Nucia last week. He suffered a heart attack. There were no passengers on board at the time.

The closure of ‘El Otro Mundo de Jaime’ (The Other World of James) brings an end to a local chapter of history. The recreation room was opened on July 29, 1973, by businessman Jaime Perez Sales. “In its day it was the best local entertainment in Spain. There was something similar in Madrid, from where we copied the idea and it was a resounding success,” he recalled. In its heyday about 800 people would visit the 1,200 square metre location each evening for a game of pool, table football, bowling or to use some of the one hundred or so machines, as well as the restaurant. Aged 79, the entrepreneur acknowledges having had to make one of the toughest decision of his life. With the closing of ‘El Otro Mundo de Jaime’ the place that housed the childhood and youth of many generations is gone forever. The location will become a supermarket.

Roadwork woes

TRADERS in Calle Ruzafa have complained to the council about the roadworks that are having a negative effect on their businesses. The fences reduce the visibility of the establishments, the road is closed to traffic, and pedestrian access is restricted, meaning many people avoid the area.

Beach location for health staff By Simon Russell THE Ministry of Health has approved a request by Javea Council for an auxiliary health office close to the Arenal beach for the duration of the summer. This is not the first year this request has been made, as the Javea authorities see the office as essential due to the massive influx of tourists to the popular beach in July and August. The prefabricated building

will be specially constructed in the Javea Park area of the Arenal and will be open from July 1 to August 31, Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. The health office will consist of a reception/waiting room, a consultation area and a nurse’s room as well as toilets and a storage room. The total cost is calculated at €50,000. In addition, from June 15 to September 30 there will be an extra doctor and nurse at the

town’s main health centre to cover both the high and midseason tourism spike. Mayor Jose Chulvi, who is also in charge of tourism for the town, commented: “this is an example of change in the Generalitat and by granting this request they recognise the extra strain caused by the population nearly tripling during the summer. In recent years this has led to increasing waiting times and a near collapse of emergency services.”

Elite swimmer welcomed ELITE swimmer Carlos Ignacio was welcomed by Teulada-Moraira mayor Carlos Linares last week. Blanco is a citizen of Teulada-Moraira and participated in this year’s prestigious European Swimming Championships in

London back in May. Mayor Linares used this as an opportunity to confirm that the municipality will be sponsoring citizens who represent the region at the highest level in sport and in return TeuladaMoraira will receive international recognition.

Is Your UK Property Worth Its Weight In Tax? For British expatriates, it may seem like financial sense to keep your house in the UK. However, recent changes have generally increased the tax burden for owners of UK residential properties. Capital gains tax This April, UK capital gains tax decreased by 8%... with one exception. UK residents still pay 28% or 18% on gains from residential property. Since last year, nonresidents are also charged – they pay Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax (NRCGT) on gains accruing from 6th April 2015. Where a property is not held directly by an individual or trust, NRCGT rules are overridden by the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) regime. If a property fell into ATED before 6th April 2015, gains are calculated from the earlier date (April 2013 onwards). Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) If you hold a UK residential

This has affected properties worth over £2m since 2013, but from April 2016 it captures properties valued from £500,000. With the average London house costing £530,000, ATED could affect a large proportion of indirectly-owned properties in the capital. Rates range from £3,500 to £218,200 for properties worth over £20m. The ATED-related capital gains

tax threshold also dropped to £500,000 in April. Although aimed at companies, the 28% charge is higher than the usual corporation tax rate. ATED-related gains rules supersede the corporation tax regime as they do with NonResident Capital Gains Tax. Previously, keeping UK residential property within a corporate structure was attractive because of the UK inheritance tax benefits, but this is set to change. Inheritance tax From next April, the government intends to make all UK residential property held by a foreign domiciliary liable for inheritance tax. If this goes ahead, nonresidents owning UK property – directly or indirectly – will pay inheritance tax on the property in the same way a UK-domiciled individual would. This will apply to all UK residential property regardless of value, whether it is occupied or let.

Principal Private Residence relief (PPR) Now it is much harder for nonresidents with UK property and UK residents with property abroad to benefit from PPR tax relief. From 6th April 2015, your property generally only qualifies for PPR relief if it is in the territory where you are also tax resident. However, you may be eligible if you spend at least 90 days of the tax year in the property. If you cannot meet these conditions, no relief is available.

Thong gave wrong impression By Linda Hall A 22-YEAR-OLD received a two-year sentence for breaking into a Campello home and sneaking into a woman’s bedroom.

Still asleep, she assumed that it was her cat on the bed but realised that she was mistaken when she felt a mobile phone and someone lifting her nightdress. She put on the bedside light and

saw a stranger trying to hide beneath the window before jumping out. The woman’s husband and son ran outside and found the intruder lying injured after falling from the first

floor. The intruder explained that someone had hit him on the head and stolen his mobile, although this was still on the woman’s bed. During the trial the Alicante court heard that he meant to visit a girlfriend who lived in the same street but went to the wrong house. Someone had hit his head at a party that night and he had forgotten what happened, he claimed. In his summing-up the judge said that the 22-yearold’s account lacked veracity. The supposed girlfriend denied being in a relation-

ship and he had left his shoes in the street, indicating that he did not want to wake the occupants, the judge added. But the clincher for the judge was the thong that the intruder wore beneath his underpants. This item of ‘intimate female clothing’ made his ‘libidinous intentions’ abundantly clear, the judge ruled. The young man must pay the woman €2,000 compensation and received two separate 12-month terms for sexual abuse and breaking and entering.

Prison officers avert disaster By Linda Hall

A PRISONER classed as ‘very dangerous’ started a fire in the infirmary at Alicante II prison in Villena. Already responsible for incidents in Villena and other prisons, he set fire to his mattress and at the same time attempted to self-harm, prison sources said. Although prison mattresses are non-inflammable and flame-proof, the fire caused so much smoke that the air was unbreathable and it was

impossible to see, the same sources revealed. Prison officers’ rapid reaction prevented the fire from spreading and stopped the prisoner from inflicting further injury on himself. After first aid at the infirmary for smoke inhalation and burns he was then taken to hospital. Prisoner officers’ union Acaip will ask the authorities to ensure that similar incidents cannot happen again, a representative said, and call for the immediate transfer of dangerous prisoners to centres with installations that are more appropriate for them.

Icelandic travel visitors A DELEGATION of Icelandic tour operators visited Denia last week, representing the Urval Utsyn, IT Tours and Vita Travel World companies who specialise in sun, beach and golfing holidays. Their visit coincided with Denia’s Non-Stop festival and

staff from the tourist office took them on activities such as a boat trip to the Cap de Sant Antoni and, to show the ecological side of the area, were given a tour of the marina nature reserve. They also took a Segway tour through the Baix la Mar and castle areas of Denia en-

compassing many of the most historic sights. Afterwards the group said they were surprised at the diversity available to tourists in what many consider just a beach resort. A workshop and presentation by local hotel companies outlined deals available for the summer season.

Film festival is round the corner SEVENTEEN short films are competing in the official section of the Alfaz del Pi film festival this year. They were chosen from the 820 submitted for the festival’s 28th edition that will be held from July 8 to July 17. “This year is outstanding for the high quality of the competing films,” said the festival’s director Javier Pascual. “There are all kinds of themes, from drama and science fiction to war, gender-based violence, homosexuality, gender-identity, death and loneliness.” The shorts include ‘Timecode’ by Juanjo Gimenez, winner of the Golden Palm at the last

Cannes Festival, and David Victori’s ‘Zero,’ a sci-fi film produced by Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender. Five of the 17 films competing for the Faro de Plata - a replica of the emblematic Albir lighthouse - are Spanish-US co-productions, Pascual said. The winner also receives €5,000 in cash and is automatically eligible to compete in the Premios Goya, which are Spain’s annual film awards that are held in Madrid. There will be €2,500 for the runner-up and €1,250 for third place, with a further €500 prize for the film that r e c e i v e s t h e p u b l i c ’s vote.

RELEASED: Schoolchildren avidly watching the turtle’s return to the sea.

Turtles return home By Simon Russell AROUND 1,200 schoolchildren were at Playa del Raset in Denia for the releasing back into the sea of two turtles. The release area was fenced off to prevent alarming the normally placid creatures although the turtles were carefully shown to the children in close up before being released. A talk was also given to the children about the danger to turtles of refuse such as plastic bags which they confuse with their usual food of jellyfish.

The event was organised and run by Valencia’s Oceanografic as part of the ARCA (Ark) project. These turtles were recovered by local fishermen who now ensure that any turtles they catch accidentally are handed in as part of the ARCA project. There they will be checked for injury and when they are well enough returned to the wild. One of the turtles was a rarer (for these waters) green turtle, and the other was the more common loggerhead turtle. The release went to plan and both animals seemed happy to return to their natural environment.

Think before you flush HYGIENIC toilet wipes are being blamed for blockage problems in the Denia sewage system mirroring a problem increasingly common around the world. These wipes fail to break down in the same way as conventional toilet paper and eventually blockages will ensue. Denia Council is asking people to dispose of

these in bins rather than flushing to protect the drains in the town. Other products that should not be flushed but often are include cotton buds, condoms, swabs and sanitary pads. You should also refrain from disposing of cooking oil in your toilet as this fails to break down. Special recycling containers are now available in most towns for cooking oil.

A new innovation on the beach this summer is the provision of a defibrillator for cardiac emergencies. Growers want tax break By Linda Hall THE national government has finally included Alicante cherries in tax breaks for crops affected by drought. Cherries, as well as nisperos and dessert grapes were excluded from last year ’s reductions, despite heavy losses owing to insufficient rain. These omissions have been put right and more concessions were recently announced, although it wasn’t good news for everyone. Planes and Benimarfull growers were satisfied to learn that they would be paying less tax on last year’s earnings, but Vall de Gallinera, one of Alicante Province’s principal cherrygrowing areas, was indignant at its ‘inexplicable’ exclusion from the concessions. Back in the Marina Baja there was more indignation in nispero town, Callosa d’en Sarria, which was excluded from Madrid’s tax

come tax for cherry growers. “The rectification falls short and provides no solution for all crops affected by drought and last year ’s series of heatwaves,” Saval said.

Concert cancellation By Linda Hall

THE Nicky Jam concert in Campello was cancelled 12 hours before the reggaeton performer was due to appear. The concert had already been postponed by one day owing to problems with a trailer that was central to the spectacle, the promoters claimed. As the town hall explained later, the postponement entailed considerable reorganisation of safety measures and the police presence at the concert. On the morning of the day when Nicky Jam was finally expected to perform, the promoters issued a communiqué announcing that “regretfully” they were cancelling altogether. Promoters revealed that although they had paid the artist’s entire fee in advance his representatives sent a request for additional pay-

ment. This “left no alternative” but to cancel and lodge a formal complaint with the courts. “We wish to explain that our company complied with all contractual obligations and used all possible means to avoid this lamentable situation,” the communiqué continued. “All those who bought tickets can request a refund through the channels they used to acquire them,” said the promoters who once again apologised for the inconvenience caused. Campello Town Hall meanwhile distanced itself from negotiations between the artist and the promoters declaring “We are as affected by this absurd situation as the thousands of fans who bought tickets for the concert.” Sources also revealed that the municipality’s lawyers are studying whether to take legal action against the promoters, Nicky Jam’s representatives or both.

Family excursions finish FOR the last nine Sundays’ Denia’s Department of Environment have organised various family outings to places of interest in the locality. A total of nearly 250 people went on the excursions which included Albarda’s Mediterranean gardens, the Montgo

national park, and part of the ‘raisin route’ through Jesus Pobre. One Sunday coincided with Valencia Day and participants helped to plant a new green area to commemorate this year’s event. The final trip on June 5 was to the Gerro Tower and then

on to Las Planas and Javea Port. To round a long day off nicely they returned by boat through the Cabo Marine Reserve. As summer nears it’s becoming too warm for the excursions so they will come to an end for this period.

Decision expected soon for crematorium By Linda Hall SAN JUAN residents now await a court ruling on closing the local crematorium. The order was given in January 2015 by the current council’s predecessors who voted to shut it down as a precautionary measure. The decision was based on reports by the regional government based on analyses of samples from an identical in-

stallation belonging to the same company in Elche. These pointed to health risks, as emissions exceeded carbon monoxide limits set by the national government as well as international levels for dioxins and furans. The Plataforma Contra el Crematorio pressure group has now written to San Juan Town Hall about requesting an appeal should the judge decide that the crematorium

be allowed to resume its activities once they have taken corrective measures to reduce pollution. Some Plataforma members have also admitted that they do not entirely trust the current four-party alliance now in charge of the town hall. The council would be willing for the crematorium to reopen if corrective measures were taken, they claimed.

Illegal tuna haul captured THE Guardia Civil continue to pursue illegal fishing with a recent 425-kilo haul of bluefin tuna. The five huge fish, which would have cost the buying public €10,000, were found at an Alicante fresh fishmonger’s, revealed the Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit, Seprona. There is great public demand for bluefin tuna and this has increased as international quotas have been exhausted, stated a Seprona commu-

niqué, which added that illicit catches of this type are generally carried out not by fishing boats but anglers in their own craft. Because of the need to protect stocks, each bluefin that is fished must be accompanied by specific documentation, which the Alicante trader could not produce. As is customary, the five tuna were donated for use by local charities.

Extra time needed for investigation By Linda Hall A JUDGE requested an 18month extension to investigate alleged spying and bullying in Muchamiel’s police force. The six months established in the new Criminal Procedures Law will soon expire and the Public Prosecutor had warned that more time was needed to follow up all leads,

explained the San Vicente examining judge in charge of the case. The case goes back to 2012 when 11 Local Police officers in Muchamiel complained that they were given extra shifts at the last moment and subjected to other bullying measures from their chief. These claims came to light when the National Police de-

tained a Muchamiel officer after learning by chance that he accessed computer records with personal information about five colleagues. Accused of discovering and disclosing secrets, he was later released but this investigation triggered the enquiry into allegations that Muchamiel officers were bullied in the workplace.

Help given for large families THE town council of Teulada-Moraira have confirmed their assistance plans for ‘familia numerosa’ or large families in the municipality. Relief for the families concerned includes exemption from ‘school taxes’ and a 50 per cent relief on fiscal rates. Familias numerosa, as well as pensioners, will have access to a Tarjeta Ciudada, a city card giving a 50 per cent discount on sports classes offered by the town at the sports centre.

All children under 16 will receive a 50 per cent discount on additional classes if they sign up for more than one sports class, the discount applies to the cheaper class. Familia numerosas are classified as having three dependent children. This is recognised across Spain although benefits received can vary locally. Any European Union family resident in Spain is entitled to apply for official familia numerosa status.

Results better than expected By Linda Hall DESPITE students’ complaints about the recent Level BI English exam, 80 per cent passed the first phase. Of the 7,397 students throughout Valencia who sat the first part of the exam, 5,916 passed and can now sit the oral.

The exam set by the regional government’s Education department for students taking English at Official Language Schools (EOLs) throughout the Valencian Community was “too complex” they said afterwards. A petition requesting a resit was signed by 2,000 students on its first day but EIO sources at the time advised students to

wait for their results. “It’s normal to feel worried after coming out of an exam,” they said. Meanwhile, the Valencia region’s Education department called for calm while the test papers were corrected. For the first time the 20 per cent who failed the first phase, will be able to resit in September.

Turron town lets factory go PLANS to demolish the former Antiu Xixona turron factory in Jijona on safety grounds will go ahead. It ceased manufacturing turron in 1960 when the company moved to the outskirts of town but continued producing confectionery and ice cream until the 90s. The facade and furnace of the 1920s building should at least be saved, the Seixona Ancestral cultural association maintained.

The 1986 town plan (PGOU) already contemplated constructing homes on the site to encourage factories to move out to the new industrial estate, pointed out Jijona’s Mayor Isabel Lopez. The building is not architecturally relevant, she continued, apart from the factory chimney which was listed for protection in 1962 although there was a possibility that the furnace would be retained.

Strike cancels trains RENFE cancelled eight AVE trains between Alicante and Madrid this week following strikes by engineers. The strikes coincide with Alicante’s Hogueras fiestas but RENFE said it was able to relocate most passengers to other trains. The company estimated 338,242 travellers had been affected by cancellations or delays of its trains in the first two days of strike of the four called by the engineers union Semaf. More strikes have been called for today (Thursday) and further strikes have not been ruled out. RENFE said they’re working on a new employment plan with measures agreed by unions, which will cost €32 million and generate the most employment in the company’s history.

A YOUTUBE vlogger arrested in Valencia for child sex offences has now been remanded. The 25-year-old was charged with sexually abusing a boy under the age of 13, and possessing and distributing child pornography. He has also been accused of a breach of privacy offence. Known as Juanri, he described himself as a student teacher and over the last two years visited at least 74 schools, of which nine were located in Alicante Province. Many were state-aided or private. Juanri visited 25 schools in the Valencian Community, as well as others in Madrid, Mallorca, Sevilla, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Galicia and Castilla-Leon. In his YouTube videos, Juanri appeared surrounded by children as he told stories or explained history, science and nature studies to them. The vlogs were not dedicated exclusively to children, as Juanri also interviewed education experts, teachers and headteachers. In one he is seen talking to the second-in-charge of the Generalitat’s Education department. Schools visited by Juanri hastened to reassure parents that teachers were always present and pupils were never left alone with him.

Revenge attack on noisy parrot By Linda Hall

MISTREATING a parrot could cost an Alicante man €1,900 and seven months in prison for allegedly sprayed the noisy bird, named Curro and belongs to a next-door neighbour, with a liquid containing caustic soda. Curro lost an eye and is now deaf in one ear, the court heard. The bird is continually stressed and has become aggressive,

even with its owner. The defence lawyer called for the case to be dismissed complaining that in the five years since the attack, nothing has been done to resolve the noise made by Curro. The alleged attacker admitted climbing on a chair and spraying water on the bird over a dividing wall but denied using caustic soda. This could have come from an upper storey or the other side

of the interior patio, his lawyer maintained. As the cage was under a roof, it would have been impossible to spray the bird from above, the owner said, and liquid found on the other side of the cage proved that this was a frontal attack. INCREASED PROFITS: Flybe is the largest independent regional airline in Europe.

UK local and regional airline Flybe has announced that following a poor 2014, when it made a loss of £35.6 million (€45 million), it has recovered in 2015 with pre-tax annual profits of £2.7 million (€3.4 million). Based in Exeter and with more than 60 destinations, it is the largest independent regional airline in Europe, serving mainly UK destinations, although i t a l so f l i e s t o A ms te rd am, Dublin and Paris, and by expanding its routes the airlines has managed to increase the number of passengers carried by more than 5 per cent.

As is to be expected and in common with many other airlines, Flybe has benefitted from the reduced oil prices, with considerable savings over anticipated costs, and income had increased to £624 million (€792 million) despite the fact that sales had been affected by the terrorist activity in Paris and competition over fares from other airlines. Chief Executive Saad Hammad, who is changing the business philosophy of the airline to increase the number of owned rather than leased aircraft is quoted as saying “As a result of all the action we have taken, Flybe is now a

much more resilient business and well positioned for profitable growth.” The underlying problem for all airlines nowadays is the cost of fuel, but the good news for them is that whilst OPEC and other oil producers are maintaining or increasing production, it appears unlikely that prices will shoot up in the foreseeable future, especially as Iran is desperate to sell its oil now that sanctions have been mainly removed. Fracking in the USA is also increasing the a mount of oil in the globa l market.

The arrogance of some of these politicians simply defies the imagination. This egotistical self-disillusioned individual has less right to advise us than even that pathetic idiot Eddie Izzard. Brown, in his role as Labour’s Chancellor of the Exchequer and short disastrous unelected stint as prime minister, plagued the whole of the UK with more problems than any

leader in recent history. He sold off all our gold reserves - when the bottom had actually fallen out of the market - costing the country billions. And now here he is giving us advice! ‘We don’t need to leave the EU’ he spouts (without that annoying jaw movement, he has undoubtedly worked extremely hard to correct!). ‘We need to lead it.’ What sort of a naïve pipe dream is that? If a Brexit was to occur, trade is very likely to be affected at least in the short term, as current UK membership with the EU means that it is much easier for SMEs to export to Europe If the UK was to leave the EU, businesses which export to the countries under the European Union could be subject to new tariffs, depending on what kind of deal could be negotiated. Whilst we remain in the EU, the lack of import taxes help businesses to compete on a more level playing field with companies across the continent. Global trade might also be affected, as the UK would likely need to renegotiate free-trade agreements with non-EU countries, which are currently covered as part of EU membership. As outlined by Growth Business, people moving over to the UK from other EU countries since the year 2000 have contributed 34 per cent more financially to the UK than they have cost us.

British jobs could also potentially be put at risk, as the European Institute estimates that around 3.4 million UK jobs depend on exports to EU countries. Overall, what does this mean for SMEs? Planning ahead and effective management of finances is always key to the success of any business, whether that is cutting back on purchases which are not necessary. Exploring international trading options might be beneficial for SMEs who want to expand overseas. In my 20’s I believed I had plenty of time to knuckle down.

WE all think that time passes more quickly with the passage of years, but I am convinced that time actually does accelerate as we get older. As kids, the summer holiday sauntered along and we filled our long days with fishing or getting on our bikes and disappearing until sundown, and my recollection is that almost every day of those six weeks really was warm and sunny. Likewise winter, when snow would come and then lay around for weeks on end, with the snowman in the back garden standing sentinel until his nose fell off and he wet his pants in anticipation of spring. Life stuck to its proper order and it was good. The only annoyance was listening to our parents

FAST FORWARD: Life’s too short so don’t waste a minute. telling us to make something of our lives, because, they assured us, our youth would soon be gone. They kept harping on about life being short and not wasting a minute of it.

These days instead of leaving the bar because I have drunk the place dry, I leave because I am tired, and invitations out are often weighed up alongside the prospect of Midsomer Murders on TV. In my head I hear again my parent’s words of wisdom: ‘Life is short’ they say. But am I listening now? Yep, you can take that to the nearest branch of Santander!

AS far as expats are concerned, the closing date for registration for the referendum is now passed and we now await a decision concerning the final wishes of the British people as far as the European Union is concerned. Reports suggest that a significant percentage of the population has registered to vote and as many as 400,000 took advantage of the 48-hour extension in order to either check that they were registered or to actually register. Generally business and international observers are in favour of a remain vote whilst a large number of individuals are very much in favour of the exit. There is bound to be continued vocal ‘encouragement’ from both sides of the argument in the countdown to the actual vote, and there seems to be no clear leader, with finance motivating one

That being said, it is important to acknowledge that in 2016, there are still countless crimes which are motivated purely by intolerance, hatred, and prejudice. At the end of the day, this was a pointless massacre of a large number of innocents who deserved to be allowed to live their lives as they wanted and once again it raises the question of the easy availability of lethal weapons in the USA. Regardless of individual views the whole world has offered sympathy and comfort by demonstrations and vigils to ensure that the victims are remembered forever.

Put the ‘Great’ back in Britain THE doom and gloom stories that abound if we leave the EU are becoming quite preposterous. Collapse of the housing market, inflation at 7 per cent or more, jobs will dry up, factories will close. What a lot of nonsense. The latest block of apartments in London to go to the market, 50 per cent have been snapped up by overseas buyers. The Nissan factory at Sunderland turns out a Qashqai Mark II every 62 seconds, 52 days a week, 24 hours per day besides the other makes and models they produce in huge numbers. Does anyone really believe they will close the factory and set up elsewhere? Never. This government has made cutbacks on just about everything, including the fuel allowance for expats to try and balance the economy and it never will as long as we are giving £350 million per week to the EU. Hospitals are at breaking point, not enough doctors and nurses. Police numbers are down, yet crime is up. Prisons are short-staffed and bursting with foreign criminals we can’t deport. Macedonia, Montenegro Serbia and Albania have been promised acceptance to join and the UK has been asked (ordered) to pay in a further £2 billion per year to bring them up to standard. Turkey have been promised travel visas so we can expect a good size of the 75 million Muslims to swell the over 400 Mosques already in London. This is madness. We must vote to leave the EU now and start to govern ourselves. Put the ‘Great’ back in Britain and trade with all the world. We have the skills and diversity to do it, so let us all stick together and leave the EU. B Kendall from Benidorm

Your brother makes assumptions that they are claiming benefits, he does not know that for a fact, and, in any event, tens of thousands of people on low pay are entitled to claim benefits, at least this man works unlike many caucasian Brits who have never done a day’s work for years. Hateful hearsay I WAS appalled to read the letter from ‘James from Gran Alacant’ in last week’s edition dated June 9. First and foremost, all his “information,” by his own admission, is second-hand from his brother so he does not know the actual facts or the circumstances of this family who he says his brother says are “Arab” based on his brothers hearsay, who himself says he does not know as “they never speak or make contact.” Yet he seems to know that he is

a taxi driver with a “partner and four c hi l dr en and i s pr obabl y claiming benefits.” I would say that your brother seems to know a lot about people who “never speak or make contact,” none of which is his business anyway and he has no right to make such comments about people he knows nothing about and both of you could find yourself in serious trouble for doing so. And, if your brother is the sort of loc a l t hey have com e up against, no wonder they “don’t speak or make contact,” personally I w oul d t el l your br ot her t o mind his own business in no uncertain terms.

Being able to move around isn’t just good from a physical perspective, it’s also good for your emotional wellbeing. However, a senior lecturer in the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease at the University of Liverpool believes everyone must find their balance between a healthy lifestyle and the pleasures from indulging in the occasional unhealthy habits as being happy can ultimately help you live a longer and healthier life.

Bus it to lose weight DRIVING for more than an hour a day can make you larger than those who drive less than 15 minutes. Researchers from the Australian Catholic University found that more than an hour behind the wheel can lead to a weight gain of around 5lbs more than someone who spends less than 15 minutes in a car and add 1.5cm of fat to your waistline. Men are most at risk because they spend the most time behind the wheel. Elsewhere, scientists noted 64 per cent of people from the UK used a car as their main form of transport. For years governments have been promoting public transport for environmental reasons but it could be healthier for you too. A study of more than 150,000 British people aged 40 to 69, those who walk, cycle, or use public transport have less body fat and lower BMI than motorists.

Guidance on implants THE Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) under the Ministry of Health, has prepared a briefing paper with the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) for women who are considering undergoing surgery for breast implants. The guide warns of risks to this surgery and asks patients to be “emotionally mature” and have “realistic expectations” of the results. Placement of breast implants is a surgical procedure and has “some risks inherent in any surgery” which patients need to be aware of, and that they can deteriorate over time requiring further surgery. Women have to have maturity as the best results are obtained with full breast development. Leaflets will be available in health centres and specialist plastic surgery clinics.

Don’t worry though, there are things you can do to limit symptoms of hayfever and other allergies, so here’s our advice on how to get through hayfever season.

If none of this works, visit your chemist for one of the many hayfever remedies available which help reduce all the symptoms, including the issues with your eyes. If you find your usual brand has stopped working, try a few different ones as every year can be different. If your eyes are reacting quite badly you could also try an antihistamine eye drop.

How does hayfever affect the eyes? Hayfever can cause conjunctivitis underneath your eye lids which will cause your eyes to feel itchy. When you get conjunctivitis under your eyelids, less mucin is produced and your eyes will feel dry. On the other hand, hayfever can simply irritate the eyes and make them water.

Can I still wear contact lenses during hayfever season? Unfortunately hayfever is a real problem with contact lenses. If your eyes are affected badly, there is no option but to revert to wearing glasses so that you can use antihistamine eye drops, as unfortunately you cannot use these with contact lenses.

How can I stop my eyes watering and being sore during hayfever season? Protect your eyes with sunglasses, keep windows closed in the house and shower and change when you get home to remove any pollen from your body or clothes. You should also wash hands frequently and try to avoid rubbing your eyes.

What should I do if I, or som eone wi t h m e, st art not i ci ng sym ptoms of heatstroke? The first thing to do is to stop any physical activity or exercise being carried out at the time. Then t he per son af fected should stay in a cool place and drink lots of liquids (water or isotonic drinks). If this doesn’t help al-

Benefits of green tea GREEN tea could benefit people with Down’s Syndrome according to researchers who carried out a year-long clinical trial Young adults were given green tea supplements and it was found that a chemical in green tea helped improve memory, speaking and behaviour and this remained for six months after the trial ended. Brain scans revealed the compound altered the way brain cells connect with one another. Scientists advised this is not a cure but that it could improve the lives of people with Down’s Syndrome.

Poor fitting footwear can lead to injuries RUNNING may not be as good for your health as you think. Research by the College of Podiatry found that running typically leaves people nursing injuries for around 26 days each year. Their study found that ignoring foot or leg pain meant 13 per cent were forced to give up sport or running completely because it got worse and half of people who take up a new sport or running get injured by wearing the wrong footwear.

Two thirds of those asked admitted they do not replace trainers or running shoes until they fall apart and 43 per cent confessed they’ve carried on using uncomfortable footwear, because they look good, despite the pain. Wearing the wrong shoes for running can lead to injuries such as shin splints, calf problems, lower back pain and hamstring strains. One in four had to get hospital treatment for their injury which also then puts people off

their good intentions to run and exercise. The average Brit has two pairs of trainers, but only 19 per cent had a proper fitting before buying and 33 per cent never tried them on having bought online. The College of Podiatry recommends shoes are professionally fitted, should be at least 1cm longer than the longest toe and should be fitted in the afternoon or evening when feet are at their longest.

Voices singing in the Valley choir ANOTHER successful concert was recently performed by local choir Valley Voices in the Multi Uso Hall in Alcalali. Directed by Aileen Lightfoot and accompanied on piano by Kirsty Glen, the choir sang a wide range of songs with the finale, a stirring rendition of excerpts from popular West End musical Les Miserables.

Guitarist, John Anthony played a selection of film themes on his guitar. A collection was held at the end of the concert where €200 was raised, which is to be used to buy food for local charity Caritas, which will then be distributed. This is a very happy choir, and as well as getting together to sing it is a great place to

Fishing insight IT is now possible to experience first-hand the life of a smallboat fisherman in the Bay of Altea, and immerse yourself in the culture and seafaring tradition of the area. The next Monthly General Meeting of the U3A MorairaTeulada group will take place on Monday, July 4 at the Salon SL, Avenida Mediterraneo, Teulada. The doors will open at 9.30am, and the formal meeting

will begin at 10:30am. Existing members who have not renewed their membership are invited to do so, but are advised that as technically late, they will have to pay the full fee of €10. New members who wish to join are welcome and can do so from 9:30am until 10:30am. Application forms can be downloaded from the website. The joining fee is €10. Stress-free holiday rentals, part one John Graham The property expert

FOR EWN readers on the Costas and Mallorca planning to rent out their property this summer, I would like to give you my ‘top 12 tips’ on preparing your property for holiday rentals. You may want to keep this article and use it as a check list, to help you enjoy a stress-free and successful summer, renting out your property. • The community rules: If you are planning to rent out an apartment for holiday rentals first check that the community rules allow you to do so. If the current rules do not allow rentals, you may want to get together with other likeminded owners and vote to change this community rule at your next AGM or request an extraordinary meeting.

CHECK IT OUT: Make sure your community rules allows rentals. If you are renting out a villa there should be no problems but it is always wise to first check your local community rules to be on the safe side. • Legally register your property: The first thing you will need to do is register your property for holiday rentals with the town hall, or ask your

lawyer to do this for you. • Holiday rental agreement: Draw up a standard holiday rental agreement or ask your lawyer to prepare one for you, if you intend to use an agent they will have their own standard rental agreement. • Handling rental bookings yourself: If you are going to

handle bookings, you will also need to arrange weekly cleaning, laundry, maintenance, repairs, meet and greet, take bookings, collect money, advertising, deal with problem renters, damage to your property issues, etc. • You are competing with other rental properties: Holi-

day rentals is a very competitive business so start by writing down a list of all the appealing points about your property that you or the agent can use in the advertisement of your property to help attract holiday rentals. The points could be simple things like: the views, location, new or refurbished property,

the fantastic kitchen, the property has a lift and ramps, private pool or garden, south facing, etc. Take a few interior and exterior photos and some of local attractions such as the beach or golf course for advertising. • Target the type of holiday makers you want for your property: Make sure that you are clear about the type of holiday rentals you want, if you want families or couples only, let them know that you are catering for them, such as baby cots, fold down sofa for children, board games, books in the property and list leisure facilities available. the furniture. Does that mean all the furniture or just some of it? If you change the rules, the dog will be confused. Don’t allow him to do something one time and forbid it the next. Basic training Obedience training can be very

helpful to the adult dog and to you. However, it is not the same as training a puppy with no prior training. Your dog may have learned commands other than the ones you use. Take time for him to adjust to your commands. You can train the dog yourself or take him to an obedience class with a qualified trainer. Wait until after the first week to start formal training. The training period can be a good way to create a strong bond between you and your dog. In addition, the dog can learn what you expect of him and how he can please you. Both of these things are very important to him. Member of the family Most dogs adjust quickly to their new families, within a week or two. Some take longer. Very few dogs are unable to adjust at all. In most cases the dog will be well-adjusted within a month. In fact, you may find it difficult to remember a time when he wasn’t part of the family.

Inquisitive and gentle creatures CHINCHILLAS are among the most suitable rodents to be considered as a family pet, despite being predominantly nocturnal. They are fairly low maintenance, quiet, and don’t produce offensive smells. They can also become quite tame if handled from a young age, even forming a bond with their owner. Native to South America, wild examples are rare having been hunted to near extinction. In Spain, temperature can be an issue as chinchillas require a constant range of 60-75°F, so are unsuitable for owners without a basement or unwilling to use air-conditioning in summer. They are extremely active so require a large cage, ideally with multiple levels, a solid base to avoid them trapping their feet and a solid exercise wheel can be added. If yout to play be aware that they can jump several feet in the air, squeeze through surprisingly small spaces, and are likely to gnaw on wires, furniture, etc. Feed only with hay and chinchilla pellets and avoid treats. Provide clean water regularly, change soiled hay or bedding daily and clean the entire cage ever week. A dust bath must be offered at least twice a week and a special block of wood or pumice stone provided to gnaw on, as their teeth can grow up to 30 cm per year.

I, LIKE an increasing number of e x p a t g a r d e n e r s in Spain, prefer to not use potent chemical weedkillers but at the same time want to avoid t h e b a c k b r e a k in g task of continually hoeing, mattocking, hand pulling, hand trowelling and forking out weeds. Fortunately there are several things one can do when planning a new garden or modifying an existing one as outlined below. Ground cover plants Plant flowering and evergreen plants that will soon grow sideways and create deep shade below the green growth which will make it difficult for most weeds to germinate and survive. Minimise planted areas Design the garden with smallish f l o we r b e d s a n d shrubberies surrounded by wide paths, terraces and areas of stone chippings laid over solid plastic sheeting over wh i c h p l a n t g r o w th can be allowed to overlap. Covering areas to block out light for a few weeks One can use pieces of old

For instance solarisation is ideal if you plan to develop a vegetable garden on an area of wild ground that is c urre ntly c ove re d w ith a dense mass of annual and perennial weeds and with many fallen but ungerminated seeds on and in the soil at the moment. A s outline d be low the method is inexpensive, not labour intensive and relatively fast during the hottest months of the year. cleared of weeds but a little larger. Then dig a 15 centimetre deep trench around the intended veggie plot. When this is done water the area and then immediately cover the damp weed covered soil with the plastic placing rocks on the plastic sheeting to prevent it being blown away. Then push the edges of the plastic into the trench and bury them. The area of soil will now be sealed and wind will not be able to get under the sheet of plastic. Maximising space in your bathroom By Simon Russell IF you have a small bathroom, utilising the space is particularly important. Experts have given some tips worth remembering. Start by removing all personal items from the bathroom eg towels, make-up, hair dryers, etc as this gives you a clear picture of the space you have. Then you can decide what really needs to be moved back and what can be stored elsewhere. Do occasionally used items need to be stored in the bathroom all the time? Storage boxes that stack together are another obvious move. Try and store similar items together e.g. hair care products in one box, unopened shampoos, toothpastes in another and so on. Small shelving units can also be useful as is a shower rack for soap and shampoo rather than having them on your sink or bath. Finally, battery operated shavers are usually smaller and safer.

Think inside the box By Matt Ford AS the natural habitats of many bird species continue to take a pummelling, nest boxes are the ideal way to help our feathered friends

flourish, and here are some tips on building your own. In terms of materials, wood is the most suitable since it allows the box to breathe and helps maintain an ambient temperature, thus avoiding overheating and excess condensation. For long-lasting boxes consider using hardwoods such as beech or oak, and avoid treated wood that may leach chemicals and harm birds. The wood used should be at least 15mm thick to provide good insulation, while nails and screws should be galvanized to prevent rusting. Drill a couple of drainage

holes in the base, and add a waterproof hinge to the roof to allow for an annual clean once the occupants have moved out, but donâ€™t add a perch as this may attract unwanted visitors. In terms of the access hole, the diameter depends on which species you want to attract, with 25 mm recommended for small tits, 28 mm for great tits and flycatchers, 32 mm for house sparrows and nuthatches, and 45 mm for spotless starlings. For extra security, a clasp can be added to prevent predators from opening the box.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man FOR you who think being grumpy and having a moan is easy, you should know that it has to be used in the right circumstances, because if used by the wrong person, to the wrong person, at the wrong time the outcome can be, to say the least, disastrous. To quote the late, great Max Bygraves, “I’m going to tell you a story.” It was told to me by the man that was allegedly there when it happened. He was in a line checking in for an international flight with one of the big American airlines. He was travelling Club Class and in front of him there was a business man on his phone talking particularly loudly and giving it large about some deal he had done. The line wasn’t moving too fast and although it was a fraction of the normal length the bloke was moaning to whoever he was talking to. He got to the front of the line, put his bag on the scales and then started having a go at the check in lady. It wasn’t just a moan - he was being seriously rude having a go at her at the top of his

voice about all the things he thought were wrong and why wasn’t he entitled to an upgrade? He was annoyed about so many things and the young lady just kept smiling and very politely saying sorry about this and sorry that he wasn’t happy about that and he just kept yelling. Anyway eventually he goes and my friend checks in and says to her that he couldn’t believe how she kept so cool and didn’t just refuse to deal with him. Her reply was amazing. She explained that she never got mad with this type of customer but she did get even. My friend asked, “What do you mean”? She said that although that man was travelling to London …...she had sent his bags to Tokyo!! See what I mean? There was a person that thinks that being grumpy and having a moan works all the time. But it doesn’t! Another tip is to be careful about having a moan in restaurants and be particularly careful about sending food back. Obviously sometimes it has to be done but you don’t want that pizza coming back with any extra toppings on it! That reminds me of the story about the pizza restaurant owner found dead on the floor covered with ham, cheese, pepperoni, peppers, chicken and pineapple …. the police said they don’t know how he died but think he topped himself.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Intelligent road signs AS part of the series, we answer some common driving questions and keep you updated on the latest driving and road news kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers. A NEW wave of road signs is being installed across much of the main road network in Spain, as part of a multimillion euro investment scheme to make the roads safer. Illuminated signs offering more protection at roundabouts have already been installed on the infamous N-332 around Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca which flash in the direction of movement and triangular signs that flash orange to warn us of the approaching hazard. These sign groups have two units, one is the detector, the other the receptor and warning sign. When traffic flows freely the signs look like nothing more than a black square. But, when traffic is detected, the square displays an electronic version of the triangular P-31 road sign, warning of congestion, with flashing orange lights to attract attention. These are not the only intelligent signs being installed on the road network. In other areas of Spain a number of junctions have already had warning systems installed which tell drivers on the main carriageway that there is a vehicle at a junction ahead on a minor road likely to join or cross the flow of traffic. Sensors built into the road, similar to those used to monitor traffic flow, become aware of the presence of a vehicle at the junction. They are able to identify the size and type of vehicle, if needed, and send the information to the warning sign located on the m a i n c a r riage-

way, offering an extra set of eyes to the driver and the theoretical ability to see beyond bends and buildings ahead, reducing the surprise factor and, hopefully, reducing the risk. The ‘dynamic junction warning system’ uses low-cost technology to exchange information between the vehicle, infrastructure and back to the vehicle, aiming to warn of the proximity of vehicles at junctions. So far, four locations in Spain have these signs, chosen because of their high incident rate. Two are located in Madrid and León, the others in Navarra and A Coruña.

Hackers expose flaws A SERIOUS security breach has forced Mitsubishi to recall 100,000 Outlander hybrid cars after hackers managed to turn off the car’s alarm and drain its battery. The Outlander uses wifi to allow drivers to access and change certain features remotely but it is less secure than other methods such as the GSM web service. The hack was conducted by a security expert who works for consumer and driver interests in ensuring their cars and personal data is protected. He also found that hackers could locate a car they were interested in easily using the same technology. Cybersecurity is fast becoming of chief concern to engineers working on new generation interactive cars.

JAGUAR caught the attention of motoring enthusiasts last year when it announced plans to finish the legendary XKSS 1957 series. A huge fire at the company World War Two era assembly

plant had destroyed nine of the 25 original models, leaving just 16 in existence, one of which was bought by Steve McQueen. Rebuilding those nine is expected to be a mountainous challenge but the firm expects completion in around six months and has already sold

the vehicles, at €1.3 million each, to private buyers. Original drawings and two original cars have allowed the engineers to create a digital representation of the manufacturing process, while McQueen’s model can be found in a Los Angeles museum valued at €26 million.

Manx rally record smashed MARK HIGGINS broke his own Isle of Man record for cars by completing the 38 mile course in a speedy 17 minutes and 35 seconds, at an average speed of 128.73 mph. The time is a solid 80 seconds ahead of the previous official record Higgins set back in 2014. Driving a highly modified Subaru WRX STI with nearly 600 hp, Higgins had a massive advantage over his previous attempts in rustier vehicles. Higgins has won the British Rally Championship three times and is also a professional stunt driver but isn’t the fastest on the island with biker Michael Dunlop managing a lightning fast 16.58 on a BMW S1000 RR Superbike. A video of Higgin’s record breaking run will soon be released by Subaru.

Nordic niche ALL petrol and diesel based cars could be banned in Norway by 2025 if a green government blueprint comes into effect. The Scandinavian country is looking to gradually phase out any non-electric vehicles, including hybrids, and expects that in a decade only electric or hydrogen fuel cell cars will be available for purchase. Eco cars are incredibly popular in the oil rich country which is known for implementing progressive policies and is one of the world’s most bicycle friendly nations.

Susie wins the Burrow’s medal golf competition ON Friday, June 10, Montgo Golf Society played a medal competition at Oliva Nova, kindly sponsored by Arthur and Sally Burrows. Unfortunately Arthur and Sally were unable to attend, but they provided a splendid prize table for the day which was greatly appreciated by the members. Sun hats and copious amounts of water were the order of the day, however the hot and sultry conditions still took their toll on many of the players, with several complaining in the bar afterwards that it was

too warm to be playing golf. Get over it guys, it’s only June! The winner, with an excellent net 70 off 17.6 was a delighted Susie Snelling, closely followed home by a resurgent Gordon Gleeson with a net 71 off 17.1. Glenys Cuming took third place with a fine net 72 off 30, pushing Neil Carter in to fourth place with a net 73 off 11. There were four nearest the pins on offer, with all the prizes going to shots within three me-

tres of the flags. Shaun O’Gorman took the nearest the pin on the par-three third, and Penny Barden was closest on the 11th. Richard Fox was again in the prizes with a fine second shot on the par-four fifth, and Glenys Cuming completed a good day for the ladies by winning the prize for her second shot on the 18th. Benitachell Bowls Club THE BBC home match on Wednesday June 6 saw the club come up against a very strong and determined El Cid Team, with all the players needing to be in top form to continue the winning run. Christine Mawson played the ladies singles, and her opponent was Anita Randall. The ninth end saw Anita take a four, but, Chrissie dug in and won 10 of the remaining ends to win 21 – 12 for a great start. Dudley Davies competed in the men’s singles against Paul Trunchion. Dudley started his match in fine style, winning seven of the first 10 ends 17 – 5 shots up. However, his opponent fought hard and made an amazing comeback to lose by one shot, 21 – 20. Once again Tim Woodcock and Steve Grif-

fin took on the challenge of the pairs. Up against the experience of Derek Randall and Ros Dingle, the ‘Dynamic Duo’ pulled off a brilliant 22 – 18 victory. The triples team of Bert McLean, Clive Langan and Trevor Neal, despite losing a seven on the second end did not give up and finished their match with a very creditable score of 18 shots to 22. Each side won nine ends. Unfortunately our rinks team did not fare so well in this match. They struggled to get a foothold and Carol Davies, Peter Collins, Tony Lawley and Maggie Lawley just could not find the ‘magic’ skills required. The game ended with a score of 8 – 23. Markers for the singles were John Ranger and John Lapthorn, while Derek Mawson was umpire for the day.
