Dancing queens on stage in sold-out event By Adele Land More than 400 spectators packed out the multi-use artisan centre in Mojacar on Friday May 13 to enjoy a starstudded display of flamenco. People travelled from across the province and beyond to see the latest edition of the Mojacar flamenco gala, the second in the space of a few months. The sold-out evening proved to be so popular extra seats had to be brought in. The much anticipated event, co-hosted by Mojacar Council’s culture department and Francesca and Eduardo Girone saw four generations of dancers from the La Chanca district in Almeria perform for the enthusiastic crowd. Stars of the show included Mari Angeles Carillo, a teacher at the conservatorio in Almeria, her niece, Isa Ramirez, who dances with the Spanish flamenco ballet company, along with other members of the family, Ana Alonso and Mari Angeles Hernandez. The fast-paced steps, haunting music and colourful gowns had the audience waiting with

Zurgena gets facelift A NUMBER of works are underway in Zurgena this week. A new section of piping is being laid in Cañada Herrera to improve sewerage and drainage in that area. Green spaces and parks throughout the town are being beautified with new trees and shrubs being planted and the areas being generally cleaned up.

Mojacar floral display THIS weekend will see Mojacar village in full bloom. The eight squares throughout the village will be decorated with flowers and plants from May 20 to 22. This floral fiesta, known

as ‘Indalos de Mayo’, will be accompanied by music, sangria and tapas. The colourful event is organised by the Mojacar village business owners’ association.

A promenade date for the diary By Adele Land THE inauguration of the new section of Mojacar’s promenade is scheduled for next Wednesday May 25. Deputy Mayor and Tourism Councillor Emmanuel Aguero confirmed the date last week. The €990,000 project will extend the existing promenade by some 880 me tre s , from the C ue va de Lobo beach, along to the Red Cross building. The new phase will include a pedestrian walkway, cycle path, landscaping, beach access and a parking area. Initial works on the project began when the first ‘stone’ was laid by mayor, Rosa Maria Cano, at a special ceremony in March last year and construction began shortly afterwards. During the event, a ‘time-capsule’ was buried, the box contained a selection of the day’s newspapers, coins from the 2015 mint and a letter signed

THE Nazari watchtower in Huercal-Overa has b ee n en tere d in to t he Aga Khan architectural awards. The tower, which was recently reformed, is one of 3 4 8 c a n d id ate s fro m 69 countries. The tower joins the Adolfo Suarez library in Ceuta as one of the Spanish entries. The architect who oversaw the rehabilitation of the tower, Luis Castillo, said that the competition was a unique opportunity for the building to gain international recognition. Together with his partner, Mercedes Miras Varela, Castillo also worked on the project of the Hornos de Calcinacion in Lucainena de

las Torres, as well as the building which now houses the photography museum in Almeria. Tourism councillor, Monica Navarro, said that the competition was important for the tow n, a dding tha t pe ople from a ll ove r the w orld w ould ge t to know Huercal-Overa. The tower was built in the 13th century as a defensive look-out point and was declared a Building of Cultural Interest. The tow e r is unique in that it houses a ‘tree of life’, a symbol used by Muslims in ancient times to represent the universe. Returning to work A GROUP of unemployed people from Arboleas will have the opportunity to be fast-tracked into employment as part of a government scheme. Arboleas Council has joined up with the Empleo30+ programme which will offer work to 11 people over the age of 30. Types of work will include, gardening, bricklaying, construction and employment in the care service industry. The programme was set up in 2015 and aims to help people over the age of 30 into employment and to promote self-employment. Mayor, Cristobal Garcia, said the council was looking at different ways of creating job opportunities in the town and helping unemployed residents. Teen suffers horrific burns By Eleanor Hawkins ALMERIA City Hall is investigating a tragic accident which has left a 13-year-old girl with third degree burns covering 20 per cent of her body after falling into a puddle of acid outside her school. The acid was being used by a municipal street cleaner to remove paint from the pavement, and although the cleaner did warn the group of students leaving the school not to walk on the wet pavement, there were no signs or barriers to stop them doing so, the girlâ€™s grandfather Carlos GC told the press. The girl slipped and fell into a puddle and the acid quickly soaked through her clothes, burning her thighs, hands and forearms and the left side of her body. She was admitted to Torrecardenas

Hospital, where she had to remain sedated at all times and underwent five operations to attempt to repair the damage. Municipal Services Councillor Juan Jose Alonso said that the girlâ€™s recovery is the most important thing at this point and promised to do all he could to help the family, while explaining that an investigation will be carried out to avoid similar accidents happening again.

Changes to Galasa are postponed By Eleanor Hawkins FOLLOWING much toing and froing, decisions on the future of Galasa have been postponed until after the June 26 general elections, the public water company management has announced. Almeria’s PSOE socialist party has applauded the news, stressing that its members will continue to oppose any changes or measures regarding Galasa, which they believe are not in accordance with the law.

“Changes to the managing of the company and to water tariffs must be made legally and we will not accept anything less,” stated PSOE Almeria spokeswoman Adela Segura. “Water has to cost what it really costs and any changes to Galasa must be done transparently,” she stressed. Although the socialists showed the most opposition, the PP party didn’t appear to support them that much either, Segura said, as only two coun-

Prostitution prevention measures By Sam Croft THE Almeria Provincial Council has strengthened its bonds with the Association for the Prevention, Reintegration and Attention to Women Involved in Prostitution (APRAMP).

Blue flag not flying MOJACAR will be flying one less European ‘Blue Flag’ this summer after one of the beaches failed to have the accolade renewed. The Blue Flag is a certification awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education and is awarded to beaches and marinas throughout the world based on some certain criteria. Points include water quality, cleanliness, accessibility and facilities for the disabled, sanitary facilities and safety features including lifeguard patrols. According to the president of the Spanish branch of the association, Jose Ramon Sanchez, the regulations were particularly strict this year, resulting in some beaches losing their flags. Mojacar ’s Playa las Ventanicas was the beach to lose its flag. This is one the the most popular beaches at the south end of the resort as well as the longest. The two beaches which retained the blue flags were Marina de La Torre and Piedra Villazar. Almeria Province has a total of 25 blue flag beaches for 2016. Spokesperson for social opposition group (PSOE), in Mojacar, Manuel Zamora, lamented the loss of the blue flag, taking to social media to point out that the town has gone from having four blue-flag beaches to two in the space of three years.

In a statement, the Provincial Council explained that the Delegate of Equality, Family, and Living, Dolores Martinez, has held a meeting with the coordinator of APRAMP to establish new lines of communication and cement existing ties between the two organisations. Provincial

experts also participated in the meeting. During the meeting the coordinator of APRAMP presented new documents and materials related to awareness and education about the situation of prostitution in Almeria and elsewhere. The objective of the collaboration

between the two entities is to help women who are the victims of illegal prostitution and violent situations related to prostitution in Almeria Province. The Provincial Council hopes that by drawing on the resources of APRAMP, it can continue to do battle against this issue

and help alleviate the suffering of women who are in unwanted situations of prostitution. Martinez expressed her gratitude for the hard work that APRAMP carries out and congratulated the organisation for all that it has achieved.

PEACEFUL PROTEST: Helen and Len Prior welcome people to show their support.

Euro Weekly News - We get it correct By John Smith THE story of the Priors and their terrible trials and tribulations will be well known to EWN readers, as we have covered the events that have blighted their lives and resulted in them being evicted from their home which was then demolished. Their fortitude and bravery in not letting the way in which they have been treated destroy them means they deserve both praise and support. The bad news is that having won a case whereby at least they are due to

receive part of the money they have lost, they now have to face an appeal against the ruling from the council. As reported in both our newspaper and website, the homeowner’s association, AUAN, has planned a peaceful demonstration in the Plaza Mayor outside Vera Town Hall on May 19 at 12pm in support of Helen and Len and their fight for justice. Mass attendance was expected from British and Spanish supporters who believe they have suffered enough, and they were looking forward to yet another round of publicity in order

to promote their claim for closure to this awful event. Imagine their horror when the RTN publication issued three different editions, including their brand new Almeria ‘paper’ which was launched as the only newspaper in the area and on their front page trumpeted a report on the protest, which they initially claimed took place on Thursday April 19 although that was later amended to May 12 which is also incorrect. The Priors and AUAN have worked hard to publicise this event and to have it treated with such contempt by fabricating a completely untrue story has understandably upset them. What they are most worried about is that people will actually believe what appeared in the three editions, although luckily they don’t seem to have a very wide circulation and the company has removed the story from their Facebook page, as well as all of the comments about the inaccuracy of their reporting. Mistakes can occur but to kick this couple in the teeth by printing a fictitious story under the dismissive headline ‘Prior Engagement’ is really the thin end of the journalistic wedge. The important thing is to know that the peaceful protest is due to proceed on May 19 at 12pm as originally planned and the couple would love to welcome as many people as possible to show their support at Vera Town Hall.

Rags can be riches By Eleanor Hawkins ALBOX residents are to be able to do a little more for those in need by donating their old clothes following a collaboration agreement between the local council and Caritas charity. The agreement, signed by Mayor Sonia Cerdan, allows for the charity to install two used clothing containers in the town where locals will be invited to give generously, as things they no

longer have use for can be a great help to the less fortunate. The Caritas initiative aims to not only provide those in need with much-needed clothing, but also create work for jobless people, who will be in charge of collecting donations and recycling them. Once the containers are in place, Cerdan said, residents will be informed of their location and encouraged to take part in the project.

Officers arrest teenage suspect A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy has been arrested in Huercal-Overa suspected of having burgled two computers, valued at €1,500 each, from a house in the town. A 26-year-old man was also arrested for allegedly receiving stolen goods as he was found in possession of one of the missing computers, which had been formatted. The Guardia Civil began investigations after the homeowner reported the burglary and identified the teenager as a suspect. After searching his home and finding the cover for one of the computers, he admitted he had been involved in the burglary and led the officers to an abandoned home nearby where one of the computers was hidden.

Lucky escape LEVANTE fire brigade staff had to free a man from his car, which overturned at kilometre 3.5 on the AL717 road from Villaricos to San Juan de los Terreros in the early hours of Sunday morning (May 15), trapping him inside. Luckily the driver, who was alone, didn’t suffer any serious injuries although he was taken to hospital for examination just in case. The Guardia Civil is investigating the causes of the accident.

Fighting Tax Evasion In Spain Alongside other European authorities, the Spanish government has been stepping up its crackdown on tax evasion over recent years. As part of its efforts to raise revenue to bring down budget deficits, it has implemented new measures to find those who are not declaring all their income and assets as required under Spanish tax law, and not paying all the tax they should be. The internet and technological developments also make it easier for the Spanish tax office (‘Hacienda’) to get information about taxpayers. It receives data from about 800 different sources, ranging from tax returns to mandatory data provided by employers, banks and utilities providers. The tax office analyses and cross-references this data to detect and prevent tax fraud. We produce a trail of data in our daily lives that can be used by the tax office for this purpose. Electricity companies are obliged to provide information to the

In a reform of the General Tax Law anyone convicted of tax offences has their identity published in the Spanish Official Gazette. The authorities have also created a new aggravated offence for more than €600,000 tax fraud. The prison term for this offence was increased to six years and statute of limitation lengthened to 10 years. The tax office also renewed the 2015 Tax Control Plan to improve results in the fight against tax fraud. In 2015, it collected €15,600mn – 27% more than expected – and similar results are expected in 2016. All these measures mean more revenue will be generated, as people realise it is now virtually

impossible to get away with tax evasion. With all the tools, locally and internationally, the government has to hand, it is only a matter of time before tax evasion and hidden assets are uncovered. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with all the Spanish tax regulations if you are resident here. Any tax planning you use needs to be fully legitimate. Dreambeach gets bigger and bigger THIS year’s Dreambeach music festival will be the biggest edition yet, according to organisers. The electronic music festival, scheduled to take place in Villaricos in August, is expected to attract some 50,000 revellers on each of the days. American rapper 50 Cent is headlining the event which features other well known artists including Carl Cox, Oscar Mulero, Deadmaus and Laurent Garnier. This year’s event will take place in a new location, closer to the camping area in a larger space of some 80,000 square metres and extra parking has been allocated. Artistic director Gonzalo Miranda said the show will be like no other and there will be plenty of surprises. Cuevas del Almanzora mayor, Antonio Fernandez, along with Tourism councillor, Indalecio Modesto, met with the organisers this week. Fernandez said: “People identify Dreambeach with Villaricos and the event attracts thousands of people from all over the world who come not only to enjoy the music but to experience the culture, gastronomy and beaches the town offers. Latest dead dolphin in Villaricos By Adele Land MEMBERS of marine rescue group, Equinac, attended a beach in Villaricos last week where a dead dolphin had been found. The 1.4 metre striped dolphin had apparently been dead for a number of hours and samples were taken for analysis. Although the results have not yet been returned, it appeared that the animal had been suffering from a virus which caused its death. A number of dolphins and sea turtles have been washed up on the province’s beaches in recent months and Equinac volunteers have attended all of them.

Pot plants seized GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized 654 marihuana plants from a residence in Pechina. They have additionally arrested three people, although for separate crimes. A 17-year-old and a 20-yearold were arrested for allegedly

breaking into the building with the intention of stealing the marihuana plants. Meanwhile, the other person arrested was accused of growing the plants with the intention of selling them, and will be charged with crimes against public health.

Broken fountains THE National Police have arrested a maintenance worker in Almeria City for allegedly breaking apart 17 fountains and selling the metal for scrap. The man, who is accused of damages up to €50,000, allegedly used various tools, his

vehicle and his uniform in order to carry out the crimes without drawing attention to himself. Investigations began in December after a maintenance worker reported that someone had been dismantling and damaging fountains in the city.

The two day excursion, organised by Filming Almeria, allowed the group of film buffs to take a trip through time and cinema as they witnessed first-hand some of the iconic landscapes which have now been immortalised in cinema history. No fighting By Sam Croft THE Junta de Andalucia regional government is going to open disciplinary proceedings against the organisers of the cock fights which were broken up at the beginning of March in Viator. If found guilty, organisers of the fights could be slammed with fines between €2,001 and €30,000, whereas those attending the fights could face fines of anywhere

between €75 and €500. At the moment, the Junta is still processing the paperwork. Seventeen people are accused of being involved in the organisation of the fights. When officers originally burst in on the fight a few months ago, there were 120 people in attendance, among them a dozen minors. Thirty of the roosters were rescued, with 11 of them severely injured. Many of the birds therefore had to be euthanised.

An emotional exhibition By Sam Croft THE Villa Theatre in HuercalOvera is now housing an art exhibition featuring the work of the painter Conchi Aguilar. The show, called ‘Emotion in Time,’ kicked off on May 12, and will be open to the public until June 7. It consists of a total of 52 works with varied themes, colours, and compositions. Aguilar said that the exhibition represents a collection of a little bit of all of her works, over the course of the many years that she has been painting. She stated that the title of the show was chosen because “emotion is truly what you feel when you paint.” Aguilar, originally from Os-

Invigorating the community By Sam Croft THE Almeria Provincial Council recently presented the Entrepreneurial Invigoration Plan to a group of business owners from the Levante area of the province. The plan is an initiative which aims to make businesses more competitive, and offer them resources that will make them better equipped to generate wealth and employment outside of the Levante

community, as well as abroad. The presentation took place on Friday, May 13 in the Plenary Session Room of the Huercal-Overa Town Hall. Huercal Mayor Domingo Fernandez was present, as well as the provincial delegate of economic promotion and employment, Carmen Belen Lopez. Lopez explained to the group of entrepreneurs the fundamental bases of the initiative, describing it as â€œa se-

ries of projects which have the objective of invigorating the entrepreneurial fabric of the community, and strengthening the growth and development of the businesses in the Levante area.â€? Lopez argued that small and medium businesses are the economic engine of the province, and said that the provincial council will continue to provide support to entrepreneurs in any way possible.

Performing animal ban ADRA has become the latest in a growing list of towns to ban circuses which use live performing animals. The ban was proposed by the Ciudadana Abdertitana group and supported by the Popular Party (PP) council, which approved the ban in a recent meeting. The new bylaw states that it is forbidden to host this type of activity on private or public land or to advertise events of this nature. Throughout Spain, some 200 municipalities now ban this type of event and an increasing number of countries across the world have followed suit.

Note the legal requirements for transfer of vehicle IF you have a UK or any other non-Spanish vehicle, whether it’s a car, motorbike, caravan, motor home or even a quad, then they should be transferred to Spanish plates. The plates are black lettering on a white background for both front and back. They show an ‘E’ for ‘España’ and then four numbers and three letters. EU regulations require that all vehicles must be registered, taxed and MOT inspected in the country where the vehicle is normally used. A non-Spanish vehicle can only remain in the country for a maximum of six months in any 12-month period. To avoid any penalties and inconvenience, here is some information to help you through the registration process and get you back to worry free motoring in Spain. THE REGISTRATION PROCESS EXPLAINED To complete the registration process you will need to have your ID documentation in order and get a Padron (proof of Spanish address) from your local town hall. The registration process normally takes about two weeks and is as follows: • Mechanical engineer’s report to ensure your vehicle is fit for Spanish roads. • MOT inspection at an approved ITV centre. Pre-book an appointment and save time. • Registration document or log book. • Payment of road taxes. • Spanish number plates. Once your vehicle has been approved for circulation and registration in Spain you will receive all the documentation; receipts for taxes, the Spanish number plates suitable for your vehicle and an ITV (MOT) sticker to be displayed on your windscreen. The sticker will also show the month and year of the vehicles next MOT due date.

WHAT IF MY VEHICLE FAILS THE SPANISH MOT? Before taking your vehicle to the local ITV (MOT) centre, take some time to check lights and indicators, tyre treads and pressures, that no dash warning lights are illuminated, and seat belts. If your vehicle fails the MOT, the centre will explain what is at fault in their report. You will need to remedy the fault before reapplying for a new MOT test. HOW LONG WILL MY VEHICLE BE OFF THE ROAD? You will only be without your vehicle for the duration of the MOT (ITV) test. If you pre-book, this normally takes about an hour. Once completed you will be given a document from the ITV that legally allows you to drive the car, as it states that you are in the process of re-registering your vehicle. Very convenient should you be stopped by the police. Walking for charity By Adele Land MEMBERS of the Mojacar walking group recently presented generous donations to two of its chosen charities. Asprodalba in Vera, received €1,550 and cancer support charity, MACS, received €500. The monies were raised from the €1 fee each walker pays to participate in the regular walks. The Mojacar Walking Group has more than 1,000 registered walkers and covers 85 differ-

ent graded walks. The group collect the €1 fee and this builds up over the months, and is donated to one or two chosen charities at the end of the walking season. The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September to March, and normally attracts between 40 and 60 walkers on each walk. The group welcomes guests , and the aim is to raise money for local charities. The AGM will be held on Monday, June 13, also at the Hostel Rural. By John Smith PERHAPS in a bid to divert interest from the Referendum vote and with a wish to establish his name as a Statesman rather than a rich boy politician, David Cameron has tried to organise a meeting of ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ in London to decry international money-laundering and corruption. There were plenty of worthies attending but not that many representatives of governments around the world and he couldn’t even ‘persuade’ the British Virgin Islands, an Overseas Territory inexorably linked with the Panama revelations to attend officially. At the end of the day, Britain is renowned for ‘playing with a straight bat’ and in fairness the government has been trying to stop British firms from gaining contracts through bribery, but unfortunately whilst other members of the European Union may pay lip service to these high ideals, it still goes on, often with State assistance although the ‘bribes’ are dressed up to look as if they are official aid. ed moment in which it was broadcast that both Afghanistan and Nigeria were two of the most corrupt countries in the world, it is interesting that both of their Presidents were invited speakers and both did of course agree that behind the scenes payments are wrong. The problem is that in many parts of Africa, the trickle down economy is incredibly important so whilst those at the top do become very wealthy, they also ensure money does get passed down the chain to a very large number of people. Much was made out of the fact that a large percentage of both bribe and money-laundered money has to be stored somewhere and it is suggested that much of it is helping European Banks and indeed European economies to survive. Those wanting to bid for British government contracts will have to register and supply certain financial information as will foreigners wishing to buy property in the UK. All very laudable, but will Britain which may or may not be a member of the EU in the future actually shoot itself in the foot financially by rejecting ‘dirty money’ whilst others suck it up?

HAVING been at the centre of a number of investigations concerning ‘creative tax accounting’ and having paid at least some of the taxes it is believed to have previously avoided paying, Google has now decided that it is time to move to the side of the angels. The giant search platform has decided that it will ban advertisements from lenders who appear to take advantage of those in desperate need of financial assistance and any company that appears to be a ‘pay day loan’ operator offering short term assistance (60 days or less) and charging more than 36 per cent interest may no longer advertise with the group. According to the BBC Google’s director of product policy David Graff said “Our hope is that fewer people will be exposed to misleading or harmful products. “This change is designed to protect our users from deceptive or harmful financial products and will not affect companies offering loans such as mortgages, car loans, student loans, commercial loans, revolving

lines of credit,” he added. It is interesting to note that he made no negative comment about mainstream credit card operators who can charge near to that upper percentage figure despite the fact that the Bank rate is 0.5 per cent and of course Google will continue to direct users to porn sites and other areas of questionable activity. In actual fact, whilst it is easy to be cynical about Google, it has in the past taken action to ban a wide range of dubious commercial sites including those selling counterfeit items and explosives and it is possible that this ban will actually have more effect than government legislation which is why the Online Lenders Association is not impressed by the decision. There is no doubt that many consider that the charges levied by the companies in question are only a step above a door to door loan shark and even with new restrictions on their activities due in July, they have certainly not been seen to have the best interests of the consumer at heart.

Now IMF joins Brexit debate

PRITI PATEL MP: Said it would appear the Chancellor was cashing in favours. By John Smith CHRISTINE LAGARDE, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund declared at a press conference held at the Treasury in London that a vote in favour of Brexit in the forthcoming referendum would have “pretty bad, to very, very bad” consequences. Confirming that her opinion is similar to that expressed by Mark Carney governor of the Bank of England the previous day, she went on to say that “she had not seen anything that’s positive” about Brexit and indicated that it could “lead to a technical recession” for the UK. Naturally, those in favour of the Brexit immediately came out against the observations of probably the world’s most powerful woman involved in finance indicating that the IMF had got things wrong before and according to Priti Patel MP “It appears the Chancellor is cashing in favours to Ms Lagarde in order to encourage the IMF to bully the British people.” Lord Lamont former Chancellor of the Exchequer who presided over ‘Black Wednesday’ and was forced to withdraw Britain from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism also condemned the statement by Ms Lagarde. Ms Lagarde however said the Fund had a duty to assess the risks of Brexit and to an-

nounce them saying “I don’t think that in the last six months I have visited a country anywhere in the world where I have not been asked ‘what will be the economic consequences of Brexit?’” In addition, she said that the research undertaken by the IMF indicated that in the event of

WHY are we all so frightened to speak the truth? These latest so-called ‘gaffs’ by Cameron, and even our dear old Queen (not Elton J, I hasten to add!) are cases in point. Let’s be quite clear. The Chinese are a rude jumped-up lot. They behaved abominably on their recent state visit. Even threatening to cut their visit short if, among other demands, their hotel wardrobes weren’t painted red! Furthermore, we do give aid to criminally corrupt and cruel countries, of which Nigeria and Afghanistan are two of the worst. It is also a proven fact that, although only 12 per cent of London’s men are black, 46 per cent of knife crimes and half of the gun crimes are committed by black males. There are also areas in British

Muslim leaders denying that terrorist attacks are almost always preceded by screams of ‘Allah Akbar.’ Well of course they are. I’ve never heard of any of them calling out ‘Christ is risen!’ The police were perfectly correct in voicing this ‘battle cry’ before their recent terror exercise. This

perversion of a religious statement is often the first warning the public get of an impending attack and may just give them a chance to at least duck before the ensuing holocaust. We have to start calling a spade a spade. If we don’t, we may as well cave in now and turn the whole thing over to the luvvies and PC prats; the naïve do gooders who the militants will one day take a fiendish delight in beheading and raping in Trafalgar Square, en route to reducing Westminster to rubble. IF Britain’s membership of the EU is essential for world peace and the world’s financial security, why did Cameron return with such a poor deal? What is best? I WISH to comment on C V William s’s l e t t e r i n s u p p o rt o f Brexit, which focuses on the primary objective of the referendum, namely, what is best for the United Kingdom? As C V Williams quite rightly points out, this is about what is in the best interests of the country inhabited by our children and future generations. This is not a referendum on what is best for expatriates who left the UK for what they perceived to be a better life in Spain, however, that is not to say that British citizens living outside of the U K sh o u l d b e d e n ie d th eir right to vote. Many people will simply want to look after number one but this is, surely, a much bigger question than ‘what’s in it for me,’ here! At present, nobody knows what would be the effect on expatriates living in Spain or elsewhere in Europe if the UK votes to leave, and many questions will not be answered unless and until the UK does leave, but we should remember that it is a two-way street. We are being subjected to a climate of fear and foreboding, most of which is based on the unknown, with financial forecasts predicated on anything but fact and espoused by so-called experts who struggle to produce accurate forecasts from month to month. They speak all too freely about the cataclysmic effect that leaving the EU would have on Britain’s trade, but seem to make no reference t o t h e e c o n o mic co n s e quences of tit-for-tat tariffs/sanctions b e i n g i m p o se d o n g o o d s destined for the UK from Germany, France and the rest of the EU!

You also failed to point out as I said in the initial article that I don’t drink spirits, so chasing inferior spirits at inferior prices is so far from my intention. As I also said optics are fine for stock control and enhancing the bottom line but again we are in Spain! With regards to not knowing anything about bars, I have spent most of my life running catering houses, restaurants and public houses. I was also a member of UKBG (look it up) for many years. IT does my heart good when I see that some pontificating art snob has been taken to the cleaners with a clever fake, as happened recently in London. Many of the pictures that we personally own were painted by a late Bermudian friend and are therefore special to us. He made his living as an artist, but having sold most of his work to American tourists over many years, you won’t find any examples in a Sotheby’s auction - although according to eBay, prices are steadily rising. But they are colourful and evocative and have special meaning to us. We also have one that my Dad painted many years ago. It is of Dunster village in Somerset that he copied

UNDERSTANDING ART: No pretentious analysis is necessary. from a Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin (I bet Rembrandt never did that) and naturally it’s special to me. Another is a humorous pencil drawing of several dogs peeing up a wall human style. It hangs on the wall in

the downstairs loo, and if people don’t like it, they can look away. On second thoughts, they had better not, the walls are freshly painted. And yet another, a pastel drawing of my wife, executed by my closest friend,

has pride of place on our lounge wall. The point is, although the combined framing has probably cost more than our collection is worth, every piece represents a part of our lives. In the 60’s I was intro-

duced to the artist Terry Durham, whose work in those days was loosely termed as abstract. He could see that I was searching for words to comment on a particular striking piece that appealed to me. “Understanding it is not important,” he told me. “If it pleases you, then I have achieved something.” And that’s it in a nutshell. Whether it is art, music or literature, enjoyment is all, and no pretentious analysis is necessary. And if it floats your boat to have three ceramic flying ducks on your wall, a collection of Jeffrey Archer novels and a Paul Potts album playing, then go for it.

The Invictus Games lesson PRINCE HARRY recently opened the second International Invictus Games at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida, which sees wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and other associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing. The concept was first put together by Prince Harry as he saw the spirit and need to recover in many of those in the British Armed Forces who had been injured, often very severely, in times of ‘war’ in various trouble spots around the world. Named after the Latin word invictus meaning ‘unconquered or undefeated’, it accurately describes the dedication and incredible accomplishment that those who take part can achieve, thanks to the effort that they put into overcoming their individual disabilities. The Invictus Games are international and now attract participants from 15 countries, mainly those who have been involved in conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq, although any serviceman or woman who has been injured physically or mentally whilst in service of their country is welcome to participate. When you see the way in which these brave men and women have overcome such dreadful injuries to allow them to participate in the rough and tumble of competitive sport, it is quite incredible, and certainly brings home the fact that many of our day-to-day troubles are nothing compared to what these people have suffered and achieved.

Buying toros in Mojacar long before political correctness became popular Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

THERE were toros in those days and well before I arrived. No one knew who built the mini plaza which is still seen today as part of the Hotel Indalo on the beach. Back then everyone knew death too well. He was as much a part of their lives as the sun and his stealthy presence was to be respected when it showed up. Death was honoured by the wearing of black throughout the year. Most likely those local corridas were scheduled for the August Patron Saint’s Day in the village. Toros bravos were not caped but novilleros up to the age of two were as the old photos demonstrate. Bravery was often demonstrated by the locals as drunken foolery. In 1971 a man came into our Gaviota sales office (today an Indian restaurant) selling a package deal: a small bull, flagons of wine and cheap jamon. Wine and jamon was to be sold to the viewing public and fun was to be had by all with

My brother snapped at the deal, paid a deposit, a day was set, the ring cleaned and word sent out on the village rumour and gossip phone. The place was packed on the event’s day. About an hour before releasing the bull the Guardia Civil showed up and shut down the hap-

pening. The man that supplied the bull offered to buy it back for half price. It was all too slick and convenient for us to believe. Calls were made and it was discovered that the bull owner used this ruse often, and in fact had just done it in Adra, further down the coast. He was a known fraudster.

Details even emerged that often he shared the excess wine and jamon with the Guardia he alerted. His bad luck was having dealt with us as foreigners; he lingered in the Gaviota bar having drinks just two minutes too long. When my brother finished talking with his lawyers he flew out of the office across the patio and burst through the unopen door to grab the culprit and bounce his head off the wall a few times. Then he stripped him to his underwear and left him standing, shivering and cowering at the end of the bar with no escape. The game was up and a more than vicious revenge was eminently demonstrated. Mr Bad Guy had miscalculated our foreign reaction. Worse yet, he was evidently in fear of his life and knew it. He cried as he slid to the floor and tried to cover his face. Swag that he was, he had in his pants our money and further money from other clients ripped off. He paid a high premium for his corruption. He got one more slap across the face for good riddance and was sent to walk semi-naked to retrieve his car, so he could escape without further physical damage. He never looked back, but shysters of that type haven’t been heard of since in our area.

In a note, the doctor explained that this is one of the most common complaints medical professionals hear from both younger and older patients and can have a variety of causes. Dear Doctor, I’m a 46-year-old man and for some time now I’ve often been feeling quite a lot of pain in my knees, especially when I exercise. I don’t remember having done anything to have sprained or over-exerted them and I’m not really overweight, I could maybe lose a couple of kilos at the most. Plus I’ve always tried to walk for a while every day to keep fit. I’m worried about this pain in case it is a sign of an illness or something, I don’t think I’m old enough for it to be arthritis or anything like that. What do you think it

could be, and what can I do about it? Dear patient, Joint pain, especially in the knees, is a very frequent reason people see their doctors. Reading your letter it sounds to me like it could be a condition caused by general wear and tear to the joints from continuous use. The first thing you should do is see a traumatologist who will examine you and probably have xrays done. If they do not find any injuries or other obvious causes, you should then see a specialist in internal medicine who will look for possible rheumatoid conditions such as arthritis. For the time being I would recommend you do your best to avoid overexerting the joints, only take moderate exercise, lose some weight, take a vitamin supplement and use pain-killers sparingly, only when they are really needed.

Charity date for all dogs CALLING all dog lovers! The date for the 2016 edition of the ‘Great Greyhound Walk’ has been announced. The Mojacar walk will take place on June 22, setting off from the car park opposite the Hotel Best Indalo at the south end of Mojacar Playa at 7pm. The walk will continue along the paseo to the Cowboy Cocina where drinks and tapas will be provided courtesy of New Wave Villas and kindly hosted by Kenny. Exhibitions start By Adele Land AN interactive bullfighting and flamenco exhibition is on display in Mojacar. The works of Jose Sarabia, Emilio Perez, Juan Oyonate, Juan Gallardo, Juan de la Rosa, Ana Sanchez and Manuel Sanchez will be displayed in the Mirador del Castillo until May 29. The works feature numerous painting techniques including oil, watercolour, engraving and drawing. Moonlight walk for MACS THE only thing more beautiful than walking along the promenade in Mojacar Playa under the light of a full moon, is doing so while raising money to support MACS cancer charity. June 19 brings an opportunity to do both. MACS is sponsoring both a 5 kilometre and 10 kilometre ‘moon walk’ to raise money to support its activities including hospice care. The 10k starts at Tito’s beach bar at 9pm and the 5k starts at Big Fat Momas at 9.45pm. The

Messag By Adele Land PUPILS from an Albox High School have left messages for future generations in a unique format. The students, from the IES Martin Garcia Ramos, planted a ‘peace pole’ and buried timecapsules containing messages of peace along with a list of names of the participating children. The idea came from a similar project called the Masahisa Goi in Japan, where peace poles were planted following the Second World War. Teacher and coordinator of the project, Isabel Caballero, explained that there were more than 200,000 peace poles planted in more than 200 countries around the world. Albox is in the red ALBOX is the third most indebted municipality in the province according to opposition party, Partido Popular (PP). According to the group, the town owes in excess of some €21 million including a debt of €1 million for rent of the conservatory and the school of music. Other debts listed in a statement by the PP include, amongst others, €7 million allegedly owed to the company Gestagua, outstanding compensation payments amounting to €300,000 owed to council workers in an unfair dismissal case and more than €3 million for works on the Avenida America. The PP accused the governing council of “frittering away” public funds on lavish ceremonies and events. The group urged Mayor Sonia Cerdan to clarify the situation adding that Albox residents should be aware of the economic situation of the town.

New home for Albox judicial office By Adele Land THE Justice of the Peace office in Albox is on the move. Work has begun on preparing the new offices, based in the municipal buildings in the Plaza Nueva. Painting and cleaning of the premises is already underway and users can expect a modern, renovated facility in which to resolve minor judicial matters, as handled by the department. Mayor, Sonia Cerdan, said there was a real need for improvement to the facility in order that the department can continue its important work in the town. The new premises will have access for disabled visitors to ensure all residents can make use of the services offered.

The town council recently formed a truancy committee involving schools, Local Police and health professionals. Zurgena is the first town in the Almanzora area to set up this type of system and the council hopes it will reduce the truancy figures which have risen over recent years. A list of repeat offenders will be analysed and decisions on how to deal with the pupils will be taken on an individual basis. Follow-ups will be carried out on each student to establish if the situation has been resolved and if not, how best to alleviate the problem. Mayor, Luis Diaz, also a committee member, said that absenteeism in Zurgena schools is rife and he welcomed any means necessary to reduce the figures. He added that the future of the town depended on the children and stressed the importance of education and class attendance.

Missing girls are found By Adele Land TWO teenagers who went missing from Olula de Rio have been found safe and sound in a town near Madrid. Mairena Bautista and Zaida Guanoluisa aged 17 and 15 disappeared after leaving the IES Rosa Navarro school on April 29. Bautista’s father, Gregorio, told Spanish press he had been “on tenterhooks” for two weeks and the family was very worried. He added he could think of no reason why his daughter would want to run away from home. During the search for the two girls a number of false alarms were raised via social media which proved unhelpful to the Guardia Civil which was involved in the search. The girls allegedly travelled using a vehicle from rental company BlaBlaCar and were thought to have stayed with Guanoluisa’s boyfriend near Madrid. Bautista’s father said he was relieved the girls had been found safe and thanked the Guardia Civil agents for their efforts.

tion of fibre-based material could be another sign that there is a craving for fibre to help the digestive process in some way. Many pet shops and vets are now selling artificial bones. Beware of anything coloured since this must have an additive. I would only buy one which had a label stating what chemicals had been added. These toys have been known to cause hyperactivity and low activity. Do not buy cheap food in a supermarket and you should see a change in behaviour in 48 hours.

TOP GEAR will return to the BBC on Sunday, May 29. The revamped show will be fronted by Chris Evans, after Jeremy Clarkson’s contract was not renewed following an altercation with a producer. Clarkson, together with his former Top Gear colleagues Richard Hammond and James May, only recently revealed the name of their new Amazon Prime car show The Grand Tour. Evans is joined on the show by his co-hosts Rory Reid, Sabine Schmitz, Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, Eddie Jordan and The Stig. Top Gear will also get its own spin-off show Extra Gear, which will air on BBC Three and be fronted by Reid. Evans signed a three-year deal to front the show, but will continue to host his breakfast show on BBC Radio 2. The BBC has repeatedly defended Evans and the show from reports of disharmony on set and other problems.

Pimped M4 is the rarest By Matt Ford BMW has unveiled the stunning new M4 Competition Sport (CS) at the Madrid International Auto Show, an exclusive edition for Spain limited to just 60 officially numbered units, making it even rarer than the 700-unit M4 GTS, which is available worldwide. The elite model combines the virtues of the M4 Coupe, as rear seats remain in place, with brash aesthetic and aerodynamic enhancements courtesy of a suite of M Performance parts. The exterior is thus super sharp, with bespoke kidney grille and side mirrors, carbonfibre front splitter, air curtains, rear diffuser, and a monster fixed rear wing, plus the same 20-inch light alloy wheels, high

performance low profile tyres, and carbon ceramic brakes as the GTS. Inside, new bodyhugging seats offer improved lateral support thanks to optimised grip fins, with other additions including full carbon fibre trim, an enhanced audio system, heads up display, and a numbered plaque, plus an exclusive key fob. 30 is not the magic number A RECENT Freedom of Information Request (FOI) has revealed that 30-year-old women are 19 times more likely to be caught drink-driving than 18year-old women. If that seems outrageous, men are worse, with 30-yearolds clocking up 95 per cent more offences compared to 18year-old drivers in the past five years. Although 30-year-olds are more likely to offend than their teenage counterparts, 27-yearold men and 26-year-old women were the most likely to drive having quaffed a few imbibes, with 8,886 and 1,620 infractions, respectively. Elderly drivers fared slightly better, with 511 80-year-olds committing transgressions, nearly twice as many as 17year-olds.

Not my fault CRASHING, denting, or scratching a hire car can result in high excess payments, but almost a quarter of holiday drivers who do say the damage wasn’t their fault. Specialist car hire insurance firm iCarhireinsurance has analysed more than 7,000 claims processed between 1 January 2014 and 30 September 2015, with the data revealing that 23 per cent of those pranging a hire care while on holiday said it wasn’t their fault. In fact, three quarters of the deniers said the damage was done while the car was parked, a familiar story here in Spain.
