With all the ballots counted Nerja has officially won a nationwide vote to uncover the most charming coastal town in the country, a distinguished honour that will please residents and doubtlessly lure more visitors keen to discover just what makes the iconic Axarquia town so special. In the established competition organised by Hotel Info, Nerja made the final cut of 26 beautiful coastal towns on Tues-

day, before securing a glorious victory on Wednesday with more than 5,000 votes in favour. Indeed Nerja dominated the finals with a resounding 5,173 votes compared to 4,016 for second-placed Ortigueira in A Coruna, and Rota in Cadiz which won 2,119 ayes to secure third spot. The votes were cast by online users at the Hotel Info website, which is a prestigious accommodation reservation portal and highly representative of the broad spectrum of experienced travellers and residents across Spain. Each participating town simply had to lie on the coast and

have less than 35,000 residents and local Nerja figures were in a bolshie mood in predicting an easy victory for the pristine town which has deftly avoided the rampant commercialism accompanying Spain’s tourist boom. Commonwealth president Gregorio Campos was confident of success, reminding anyone still on the fence to “think of the Nerja Caves, which are a universal monument for their historical, artistic, biological, and geological values, or the Balcon de Europa which is full of tourists every day of the year,” before having a sly dig at the other leading contestants.

The result will be warmly welcomed by Nerja’s local authorities, and indeed by those of Malaga Province, who see its new status as Spain’s most charming coastal town as providing an excellent boon to the local economy, while ensuring that its heritage remains protected and intact.

Huge response TORROX Town Hall has received a staggering 2,300 applications from people interested in joining their new ‘Employment Exchange.’ Employment councillor, Paola Moreno, pledged that all requests will be assessed with the possibility of nego-

tiating the first contracts by the beginning of the summer season. Moreno believes that around 300 people could benefit from employment as tourist advisors, sports monitors, sea captains, and first aid or swimming instructors.

MAY CROSS: Floral crosses and displays are taken very seriously by participants. By Jill Pickering JUDGES made their final decision for the outright winner of the May Crosses (Cruces de Mayo) celebration in Almuñecar on Sunday (May 1) after having visited all 25 entries in the competition this year.

Points were given for the natural decoration of the cross, the variety of flowers used, the illumination and surroundings, the traditional gastronomy and its originality with a maximum of five points and a minimum of zero points if lacking any one of these components.

The judges also gave special value to the crosses displayed on patios, plazas or streets which enhanced the beauty of the district. The first winner went to La Cruz La Cueva followed by La Borriquita in second place and El Huerto in third. A secondary

award was given to the brotherhood of Los Dolores. The Cruces de Mayo is a traditional event in Andalucia and taken seriously by the participants, who work hard to plan and compose their floral crosses and accompanying items and take extreme pride in them.

By Matt Ford SPANISH language norms are to be modified in schools throughout Andalucia, the Junta de Andalucia regional government has announced, among a swathe of measures to be introduced under the recently approved ‘Plan for Gender Equality in Education.’ Among the policies included in the document, which is designed to combat domestic violence and sexist attitudes, is one which aims to ‘promote and encourage inclusive and equitable school practice, using inclusive and non-sexist language in oral, written and digital educational platforms.’ A manual produced by the Andalucian Women’s Institute, entitled: ‘Non-sexist Administrative Language,’ recommends avoiding masculine forms when referring to men and women in a collective sense. For example, instead of ‘chicos’ or ‘alumnos’ (children or students), a teacher should say ‘chicos y chicas’ or ‘alumnos y alumnas,’ in order to acknowledge both genders. The announcement has been met with widespread criticism, with the Real Academia Española, the official royal institution responsible for overseeing the

Campaign is successful THE final counts are in, and Nerja’s Foreign Residents Department has announced that the results of its campaign to encourage residents to register on the padron (residents register), or renew

their registration had a more than acceptable result, with 183 new names added to the list, and 251 renewals. After discovering that the number of people on the Nerja Padron was in danger

of being reduced by 1,600, the department launched an extensive campaign to raise awareness of the importance of being registered, and renewing registration periodically, to ensure the town’s

official population did not fall below the 20,000 level. The campaign was covered by English and Swedish Press, including the EWN, and had collaboration from the British consulate.

smoke was coming from a bus with engine problems inside the tunnel but there were no flames. While another bus was sent to collect the other passengers and a tow truck removed the bus, 11 of the passengers were taken to hospital, presumably due to having inhaled smoke.

Home training AN official course aimed at unemployed people interested in social care work will take place in Nerja from May 23. Job opportunities in this sector are currently booming, although many staff lack formal training. The course carries a certificate which is required to work in residential homes, day centres and home care

services, and comprises a total of 80 hours over a four week period. Classes will be given twice a week in the afternoon, covering 32 hours, with the remainder undertaken from home. The course will take place at the Social Services Centre on Calle Chillar, where applicants may also register.

Locals thanked for their understanding By Eleanor Hawkins AS a year has passed since work began in the historical centre of La Herradura to revamp the streets and try and put an end to longstanding damp problems suffered by local residents, the council has reported on the progress so far. Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, local deputy and head of Services for La Herradura, said: “Work started after Easter last year and these improvements mark the beginning of the end of the damp problems which have always plagued homes in the area due to the complete lack of drainage systems to deal with rainfall.” Not only that, the councillor continued, but the water and sewage pipes under the street, which had mostly been in place for more than 50 years, had become obsolete: too small to cope with current volumes and also leaky, “leading to non-stop damp problems.” So far Calles San Ramon, Blanquita, Las Flores, Canalejas, España and

LOCAL lace-makers are in for a busy day on Saturday (May 7) as the 13th Almuñecar Lace Meet will be held at El Majuelo park, with lace-making groups coming from as far afield as Murcia, Almeria, Jaen, Granada and Huelva to take part. There will be a number of activities organised in collaboration with the council’s Social Welfare and Equality department, including a breakfast reception from 9.30-10.30am, followed by workshops and demonstrations. More than 200 lace-makers are expected as many groups have confirmed their attendance, the local association leader has said.

Sold out debut YOUNG Velez-Malaga vocalist Adrian Martin, aged 11, who suffers from congenital hydrocephalus, who first came into the public eye when his family uploaded a recording of him singing a song with his sister to YouTube, has released his debut album entitled ‘Lleno de Vida’ (Full of Life). The video, which promptly went viral, received more than six million hits, leading Adrian to perform alongside a number of Spanish stars on the record, including Rosario Flores, India Martinez, Coti, Jose Merce, Estrella Morente, Niña Pastore and Jose Luis Perales. Friday April 29 saw the album hit the shops and sell out within just a few hours, especially in Axarquia.

Going green THE entrance to Calle Cipriano Maldonado in Torre del Mar is being spruced up with the planting of three-metre tall palm trees and a border of 60 centimetres. A small wall will be built in yellow coping stone, with a space allocated for a two metre high hedge around the drops in the street, which will be filled in and planted with seasonal flowers. At the same time, improvements will be made to the irrigation system by incorporating more efficient water sprinklers. The work is expected to be completed a month before the beginning of the summer season at a cost of €60,000.

IT is now possible to request permission for barbecues and nocturnal moragas on the beaches of Velez-Malaga from May 1 to September 30. The message will also be used as proof in the event that police verification is required.

Nigerian letters TEN people have been arrested by the National Police, one in Motril and the others in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, suspected of forming part of an organised group of scammers. The group, the police force reported, used the so-called Nigerian Letters scam to get money out of random victims in Europe, who they convinced that they were American soldiers based in Afghanistan and who had amassed small fortunes in dollars in the conflict-struck country and needed help getting it out and converting it to euros. Investigations began in July 2015 when a German man reported that somebody had tried to transfer €18,000 from his bank account using a false signature.

WINNERS of the ‘Crosses of May’ contest in Salobreña were announced on Saturday April 30, with the first prize of €400 bagged by the cross entitled ‘La Porta’ (The Bearer) from La Caleta. Runners-up included the crosses ‘Sunem Playa,’ ‘Nazari’ and ‘Villa de Salobreña,’ with prizes divided between open and enclosed space categories. The festivities attracted a significant number of visitors, taking advantage of the good weather to relax, disconnect and enjoy themselves over the bank holiday weekend. The mayoress of Salobreña, Maria Eugenia Rufino, thanked everyone who participated in the contest for their dedication.

ALMOST 25,000 people have visited tourist information offices in the Almuñecar area over the first four months of the year, the council has reported. Deputy Tourism councillor Rafael Caballero Jimenez provided details of the figures for the offices, explaining that the total number registered between the beginning of January and the end of April was 24,663, an average of 204 per day. Of the total, 14,332 (57.71 per cent) of visitors were Spanish and the other 10,431 (42.29 per cent) had come from abroad, the councillor explained. The largest groups of Spaniards were from Andalucia (25.96 per cent), Cataluña (23.78 per cent) and Madrid (11.93 per cent), while the main international groups were French (32.2 per cent), British (25.27 per cent) and Scandinavian (21.27 per cent). Most of the visitors went to the main tourist office at La Najarra (79.5 per cent of the total), followed by the El Altillo information point (15.7 per cent) and last but not least the one in La Herradura (4.8 per cent).

SPRING is in the air at ‘Loro Sexi’ in Almuñecar with the addition of newly-born animals extending their collection of tenants. Among the more charismatic species is the Malagasy native ring-tailed lemur, which many will recognise due to the character King Julien from the 2005 Dreamworks movie ‘Madagascar’.

A spokesperson from the ornithological park said: “These animals live in a matriarchal society which means that the female chooses the male. “She is on heat for just one day every year, normally in December or January, and the offspring arrive in March following a gestation period of 140 days.”

Bone sandwich? DOG lovers gathered outside Salobreña Town Hall on Thursday April 28 to participate in the ‘Day of Your Dog’ event. The aim was to promote pet adoption and the removal of dog excrement by owners. Around 200 people paraded in special green t-shirts, while there was also an exhibition of drawings by local schoolchildren plus a video showcase and prize-giving

for winners of the poster competition. Afterwards, a healthy breakfast featuring boneshaped sandwiches was provided followed by a series of workshops including a dog training display. Although the majority of participants were children, Mayor Maria Eugenia Rufino announced that a second event to attract all citizens will take place soon.

Wonderful works of art IT would not be considered unusual to see a woman sitting on a doorstep crocheting in the early evening after enduring a hot day, but in the old town of Velez-Malaga something quite unusual is hidden behind the old wooden door where Leopoldina Valdemoro sits making unique works of art. Leopoldina has a unique talent in craft work from paintings to sculptures which are modestly on view, tucked away in her small studio home where she dedicates herself to this fine art. After living in Madrid where she studied Fashion Design, Leopoldina decided to return to her family roots in Velez-Malaga to continue her work in peaceful surroundings. All her work is made from ‘pasta de papel,’ (papier mache) in a unique and laborious fashion with the result of presenting stunning sculptures, paintings and crochet work based on photographs or purely from her own imagination.

UNIQUE WORKS: Made from papier mache. The most remarkable concept of her works of art is that every bit of paper used is either a letter, a drawing, a card or some other paper-based communication between loved ones. She explained that after her parents died, she has had to carry all their personal written belongings and photographs, kept from her great grandmother’s era, everywhere she went and in order not to throw them

away or destroy them, she decided to put them to use by recycling them in the form of papier mache. Not only that, her parents had a textile shop so she is using the materials left to her to make up her creations, each and every one with sentimental value. One of her projects is a sculpture of a portrait used entirely with family letters dating back to the 18th century and al-

though they cannot be seen in the finished project, the sentimental value will stay forever. Leopoldina also wants to honour all the women in her family dating back 300 years who did embroidery, crocheting, and other sewing techniques. An exhibition of her work is expected to be held within the next six months and depends on the venue and town where there may be more interest from the general public. It takes around a month to complete a portrait sculpture and Leopoldina already has orders in hand, but hopes her exhibition will attract more attention to the importance of an alternative way to conserve keepsakes. NERJA SEWAGE: Still uses outdated methods to dispose of its waste water. In the last few weeks, work has moreor-less come to a standstill, as the final decision is being made of precisely where the treatment plant will be situated between Nerja and neighbouring town Maro. An old well has been discovered near the Capistrano Playa urbanisation in

Maro, and prospection studies are underway. In addition, a landowner in the Bendito area, whose terrain was earmarked for a pumping station, has refused the proposals. Other problems surround transport of water from Avenida Fernadis ‘Chanquete’

and Calle Jaen to urbanisations in the west of the town, passing through Avenida Mediterraneo near Hotel Riu Monica, with no infrastructure in place at present. The project is expected to cost €23.4 million, and as things stand the contractor undertaking the work has not reported financial problems.

THE town of Nerja, arguably among the major assets to the province for tourism, and recently nominated for the ‘Most Charming Coastal Towns of Spain’ award, has a severe underlying problem with waste water and sewage treatment. As summer approaches once more, the town remains unable to shake off the stigma of being the only municipality on the Axarquia coastline that does not treat sewage water, which is instead being pumped directly into the sea at La Torrecilla and Burriana beaches via subterranean outlet pipes. Installation of a treatment plant close to the Balcon de Europa commenced in January 2014, but it has not been completed despite the signing of contracts pledging to have the project finalised within 30 months. Complications arose when it transpired that pipework would need to be placed beneath several of the town’s major thoroughfares, but after recent changes within the town council, it is hoped that the new trinity party group will resolve the situation following the announcement the project will receive an additional €1.8 million.

Tapas route battle THE fifth ‘Ruta de la Tapa’ will be celebrated in Torre del Mar from April 30 to May 31, with a record 26 establishments taking part. Not only can one enjoy a wonderful tapa plus drink for just €2, there are also cash prizes plus meals in local restaurants and passes for the Weekend Beach Festival to be won.

Over 500 posters and 10,000 ‘passports’ have been distributed around the region. Last year ’s event saw €50,000 of tapas consumed, and this year appears likely to exceed that figure owing to the number of participants in the event and the quality of their offerings.

The building, located in Plaza de la Constitucion, was built by the architect Gregorio de Siles in 1765 and comprises a total of 1,066 square metres divided between the basement, ground and first floors. Although an agreement was signed in 2008, renovation work did not commence until March 2014, and has only just been completed. The finished building will house a tourist information centre, exhibition and lecture rooms, a municipal archive and a part of the legacy of Maria Zambrano. Velez-Malaga Council declared it to be an important day since the old town can now boast a cultural centre relevant to both locals and visitors.

Group visit A GROUP of journalists from Germany and Austria were welcomed by the deputy mayor and councillor for tourism, Jesus Perez Atencia, during a visit to Torre del Mar. The visitors were part of a ‘Tour of Journalists’ organised by tour operator Olimar, which took place from April 26-29. The reporters visited Malaga, Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar, where they were accompanied by the official on a tour of local beaches, taking in the gastronomical delight of sardines on a spit. The group spent their final afternoon perusing the coast between Chilches and Lagos. Atencia acknowledged the meeting as being extremely positive, with the visit representing a unique opportunity for the journalists to see the town first hand.

Some fruity festivities SAYALONGA celebrated its 32nd Dia del Nispero (Loquat Day) on Saturday May 1. The fruit, similar to a plum, originates from China and was brought to Spain over 2,000 years ago. It became popular in Sayalonga during the 1970s as an alternative to traditional crops, and has become the most important producer in Andalucia. This year almost all the fruit has been gathered early due to the unseasonably high temperatures, whereas the festival normally signals the onset of the harvest. Despite the drought, the municipality still produced over 500,000 kilograms, a similar amount to last year, albeit a month earlier. In Spain, loquats are used for jam, jelly, chutney or are poached in light syrup.

Deal or no deal FOUR drug dens involved in the distribution and sale of narcotic substances have been smashed open by National Police forces in Velez-Malaga, in an operation code-named ‘Pilar’. The confiscated stash consisted of 84 grams of cocaine, 13 of hashish, 27 of hash oil, 180 of marijuana, 90 cannabis plants, 2,300 grams of substances to dilute the narcotics, utensils including weighing scales, €770 in cash and three vehicles. The investigation began when National Police received a tipoff concerning a house used as a point of sale for drugs.

British Embassy anxious to get expats to vote on referendum THE British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, made the train journey to Malaga on Friday, April 29, to speak to a collection of press and council representatives to promote the voter registration campaign. In some ways, whilst clearly anxious to ensure that as many British expatriates did take the trouble to register to vote as possible, the ambassador had a somewhat difficult position to defend. This was due to the fact that the current government had, as part of its election manifesto, stated that it wanted to see one person one vote, but it had called the referendum with insufficient time to pass legislation to allow those UK passport holders resident in Spain (or elsewhere), who had lived here for more than 15 years, to vote. This coupled with the fact that those who had lived in Northern Ireland could not apply to register to vote online, and that no obvious assistance was available for those without internet connection, rather dampened the excitement of

British potential voters still not registered for the referendum. No one actually knows the true number, but since the start of 2016, it appears that as many as 80,000 people from Spain have visited

the government website dedicated to voting: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and the majority of them have registered to vote. It is a very simple process and basically requires a passport number, national insurance number and postcode of your last UK address. Despite everything that appears on any website, it is highly recommended that anyone who possibly can should register no later than May 16. The reason is very simple, as whilst you can register online, ballot papers will be sent by post on May 23 which means that you have to receive the physical document, cast your vote and then post it back in time to be counted in the referendum. One thing that the ambassador made clear was that there is a great deal of misinformation with regards to what could or would happen in the event of an exit from the Union. The only things that he could really say with certainty is that in the event of leaving, British nationals would cease to be nationals of the European State and that everything else was effectively supposition, and possibly wishful thinking.

Periana rocker By John Smith PERHAPS now best-known for his support of animal charities in the area of Periana in Axarquia, local resident Robin George is actually something of a guitar hero who has worked with some of the top names in rock music. Having recorded his first single in 1980, the musician went on to work with such diverse talents as David Byron of Uriah Heep fame, Noddy Holder and Roger Plant, as well as a stint of touring with Roy Wood and Wizzard. Just prior to the death of Phil Lynott, he had been invited to join a reforming Thin Lizzy, although he also went on to work with Glenn Hughes formerly of Deep Purple and the very talented Pete Haycock of the Climax Blues Band. During all of that time he also managed to record and release a handful of solo albums, the most recent with his band Dangerous Music, Painful Kiss being due for release in mid-May on specialist British label Angel Air. The album itself consists of 12 numbers all of which he has either written or part written himself, and there is no doubt the album demonstrates the quality of his guitar work and the band’s musicianship. It’s more AOR than heavy rock but it does demonstrate an understanding of the recording process and how good rock music should be presented.

Inaction continues A BUILDING in Velez-Malaga intended to be used as a centre for Alzheimer’s sufferers, which was completed nine months ago, still remains inoperative. The Association of Families and Alzheimer Patients of La Axarquia (AFADAX) has complained to the Commissioner of the State, who is going to try and find out the true reason why the town hall has not yet handed the centre over to them.

By Linda Hall THE Generalitat will allow mini-wind farms. It means that property owners, small businesses, town halls and cooperatives can now install wind turbines producing up to 500 kilowatts. The regional government’s lawyers announced that individual wind farms are not subject to the strict regulations set out in Spain’s Plan Eolico. Neither are they tied by the need for public tendering or restricted to ‘appropriate zones’ established in the Plan. “We are convinced this is fundamental in the use of renewable energy and evolution towards a really sustainable model,” said an Economy department spokesman.

A ROAD traffic accident victim is to receive €6,200 in compensation by the man who ran him over. The victim was riding a bicycle when he was hit on the RM502 in the municipality of Totana. A court ruled that the van driver did not respect the right of way of the road and hit the cyclist causing numerous injuries which took 60 days to heal.

ACCORDING to ‘the newspaper for people of the sea’ Gaceta Nautica, one of the 124 underwater sewage pipes is causing a terrible stench and releasing an enormous cloud of grey water, plastics and other waste near Ciudad Jardin beach in Playa de Palma.

BENITACHELL’S Biomoscatell project has been selected to form part of the Erasmus+ Learning for Biodiversity project for increased biodiversity at vineyards. The initiative, co-financed by the European Union, aims to introduce pro-biodiversity measures into the wine sector and encourage ecological production methods.

A NEW retaining wall at the entrance of Zurgena will be finished shortly. This 50 metre long, two metre high wall is not only intended to stop the landslides which worry local residents - especially during heavy rains - but it will also embellish the entrance to the town.

Graffiti clean-up THE Municipal Water and Sewer Company (Emaya) has cleaned 92 offensive graffiti messages in the last month. The company removed the graffiti targeting tourists and has plans to clean another 15 areas on protected buildings in Palma.

Monastery revival WORKERS have been restoring the ancient La Trapa Monastery after centuries of deterioration. Parts of the complex are already taking shape.

Cruise tourists THE Palma City Council has proposed to ‘reorder’ and ‘redistribute’ tourist access to the city from cruise ships. One of the first measures to be taken is to have the coaches more accessible.

Bike stats CAR and motorcycle accidents have decreased nationwide but those involving cyclists have doubled since 2011. The Valencian Community, where cycling is increasingly popular, was responsible for 3,000 of 25,400 cycling accidents on Spanish roads during this period.

Murder suspect A MAN wanted for alleged murder in nearby Aguilas, Murcia, was arrested in Carboneras on Sunday (May 1) in a joint operation by the Guardia Civil and Local Police. The arrestee, with initials LY who sported a bandaged right arm and a number of wounds to the left arm, is believed to have stabbed another man to death in a fight, possibly over drugs.

AFTER a stormy start to 2016, Sterling is defying gravity and enjoying a spring bounce back as it is trading at its highest level against the dollar and the euro at the end of April. This is fairly surprising as the gains posted by the pound appear to completely disregard the economic fundamentals. As a matter of fact, investors seem happy to ignore a spate of bad economic news out of the UK, as concerns over Britain leaving the European Union have started to weigh on economic activity. As the FTSE surged on the back of a rebound in the price of oil, so did the pound in a very remarkable turnaround from the dark days in February. Investors turned positive on sterling after a very rocky start to the year. Weaker labour market numbers with unemployment nudging higher, slower wage growth and weaker consumption failed to stop the rebound in the pound, as investors are more concerned with the possibility of Brexit.

STERLING: Trading at its highest level against the dollar and euro so far this year. Sterling sold off aggressively until the beginning of the spring, and this was mainly due to the uncertainty that the EU referendum is causing among major investors. Many thought the pound depreciated too quickly and too fast but Brexit fears were enough to spook investors away. The majority of economists are unani-

mous to expect the pound to slump if the public do vote to leave the EU and therefore Obama’s visit to the UK indirectly provided a major boost to the ‘Remain campaign’. Late in April, the President of the Unites States Barack Obama made a dramatic intervention in the UK referendum debate as he threw

his weight behind the continued membership to the EU as he urged voters to remain in Europe. The US president delivered a killer press conference while in the UK, where he insisted that Britain would be at the “back of the queue” to arrange a trade deal with America in case of a Brexit, and urged the public to support the continued membership of the European Union. President Obama’s intervention drew harsh criticism from the ‘Leave’ campaign, which tried to silence his remarks, but this ended up backfiring after both Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage were criticised for referring to arguments that the President has an anti-UK outlook because of his ‘part-Kenyan’ heritage. Traders cheered Barack Obama, who has single-handedly offered a major boost to sterling, as traders are convinced the US President’s comments will sway many of the undecided voters to vote to remain in the EU, and his words will surely be used many times between now and the June 23. The situation can still unfold in the weeks to come and the pound might be under pressure again as the debate enters its final stage ahead of the referendum day, when British people will be called to decide their future within Europe. It reminds us how Brexit alone remains a pivotal moment for the United Kingdom and Europe.

RIGHT, let’s use this week’s blurb to get a few things straight. Particularly to the purveyors of all the hate mail I have been receiving of late. I’m referring of course to my position regarding the British ‘in/out’ fiasco. Frankly I was against the whole Common Market concept from the word go. With our trade deals and wide range of powerful partners in the Commonwealth, I truly believed we didn’t need to amalgamate with other European countries to enable us to move forward in the world of commerce, and subsequently enjoy the prosperity of our country and its citizens within the world of finance. Over the years many of my opinions have changed. Indeed I have taken full advantage of the freedom of movement and inte-

grated social services offered by the countries involved in the scheme. As I stated some time ago, if David Cameron had returned from Brussels with a renegotiated deal, I would vote to stay in. But he didn’t did he? On the one thing that I believe is the biggest danger, not only to the UK, but to the whole of Europe, he achieved just

about zilch. Namely the open border policy. This mind numbing exercise is either being perpetrated by bureaucrats of quite unbelievable naivety or traitors, pure and simple. We are in a war, and the enemy is being allowed to flood in like a veritable tsunami. If we don’t do something to prevent it, within a generation or two, we will either be under Sharia law, or have

been embroiled in an internal war which will have cost untold thousands of lives. Well, I am not prepared to succumb to these perpetrators of hatred and inhumanity purely for my own selfish ends. Contrary to the belief of many of my dissenters, I am not a rich individual who doesn’t need the protection of the Spanish medical and social infrastructure.

OPEN BORDER: Policy is one of the biggest dangers not only to the UK, but to the whole of Europe.

On the contrary, soon to be 77 years of age, with a small British and Spanish pension, and a singular responsibility for two teenage children who, although born in Spain, hold English passports, I am extremely worried about what fate should befall us should we opt to leave the EU. No, despite not living in the UK for some 40 years, I am extremely patriotic, proud of being British, and truly mortified to see it walking blindly into capitulation and servitude through the blind ignorance of its power hungry bureaucrats. My father and millions of other patriots risked and sacrificed their lives to preserve our nation, and I for one refuse to hand it all over to heathen, undeserving aliens, purely for my own selfish ends. For example, those transferring £500 (€633.50) a month could be set to lose up to £600 (€760.20) a year due to a weaker pound if Britain leaves the EU. With this in mind, it is concerning that although clients are worried about the financial implications of leaving the EU, few have taken steps to protect themselves against potential currency instabilities and therefore remain vulnerable to financial losses. The striking junior doctors need an injection of realism Nora Johnson

THE first all-out doctors’ strike in the NHS’s history recently took place in England, as thousands of junior doctors walked out of both routine and emergency care in protest at the imposition of new contracts this summer. Are you as fed up as me with pictures of mainly young junior doctors laughing on picket lines, holding banners claiming they’re ‘saving the NHS’? So hypocritical when strikes cause cancer treatment to be disrupted, operations cancelled, consultants drafted in and outpatient appointments postponed. Junior doctors should remember their primary concern is the care of their patients, and return to work. Spreading their work over seven days will, after all, enable more efficient scheduling, balancing the supply of doctors against the demand which varies over the week. Their maximum

hours are being reduced, not increased. They won’t be compelled to work longer hours. They can’t be compelled to work beyond the maximum legal limit. The current contract encourages some to do just that, by rewarding them with extra money. That’ll now be stopped.

The ‘compromise’ proposed by Labour was denounced as an ‘opportunistic’ political ploy. A valid trial is impractical - there are too many variables for any control to work, and one side has a vested interest in ensuring it fails. Would you want to be a patient in a trial where doctors

want to ensure that death rates aren’t improved? They need to stop hurting patients as a weapon against the government and the hypocritical pretence that they’re trying to ‘save the NHS’. The NHS is, as usual, being used by the left and the unions as a Trojan horse to attack (bring down?) the government and the junior doctors have been deluded into dragging it into their political agenda. And with talk of ambulance drivers possibly striking too, this ‘weaponisation’ of the NHS continues apace. Ironically, the strike helps Brexiteers who claim the pay dispute could be settled at a cost equivalent to just two weeks of Britain’s EU contributions. These doctors have taken the country back to the 1970s, operating a closed shop and holding the public to ransom. A right Royal rhapsody SOME of the comments by British expats on the relative values of their monarchy, and especially those that question the cost, leave me absolutely dumbfounded. I wonder where Britain would be without such an important and internationally admired Head of State, together with the family who in the main carry half the cross among them. I am equally amazed when those curious Costa know-it-alls (a minority of the residents), talk about costs when the figures show just how ridiculously cheap the British royals are. Where on earth would the presidency of any democratic or tin-pot state cost any less? Britain talks in billions when it comes to the cost of the real expenses of the bureaucratic armies and their generally unproductive machinations, which create no more than quirky services and increasing demands for new taxes. Does anybody really think a short term president with or without real social skills, can relate on a long term basis with the leaders of the world in the way the Royals can? Neither would they attract the sort of reverence and genuine affection that the Royals generate with their simplicity and lack of need to impress. Only heritage can do that as has been seen with so many exiled monarchs who have returned to restore their nations to former glory. It is only the diehard Willie Hamiltons of the past who make such a pastoral issue out of the royal, non-existent economic drain. This government without reins is a blessing which needs no prompting and gets on with it with an inflexible sense of duty that is awesome. Without them, Britain would be no more than a backwater which would fare even worse by the poor reflection cast by so many of its pompous emigrants. What I saw so closely, made me have sleepless nights many a time when I realised that an ageing woman could not only be kept up at banquets past midnight but be expected to make the unrelenting whole day agenda, whether or not she slept well or at all. The problem, as the Queen would say, is that she is averse to fuss and would rather just get on with the job, however intimidating, than be associated with groans and moans. Think what she does for the nation despite being stripped to basics (they do not even have a Royal yacht whilst minor foreign Princes have two or three

Known unknowns I RECENTLY wrote to the Department of Work and Pensions asking the following questions in the event of a vote to leave the EU: 1. British pensioners living in Spain currently are entitled to healthcare funded by the UK. Will this arrangement continue? 2. British pensioners currently receive the annual pension increase the same as UK resident pensioners. Will this arrangement continue? 3. British nationals living in Spain do so as an entitlement as the UK is part of the EU. Will rights of residence be affected by a ‘Leave EU’ vote? Misplaced morals I CAN’T help but comment on a post in the Letters column (issue 1607), when Ian from Calpe wrote on his anger at the prospect of dogs being allowed on beaches.

There are too many foolish and egotistical views to comment on but have you ever compared what the human race is inconveniently making of our planet and societies? And the exaggeration about the bowl of water in a restaurant ‘which turns the WHOLE surrounding floor into a skating rink’... you poor soul… Moreover, yes I will correct you because the law in Spain asserts the proprietor of the establishment to determine whether pets are allowed indoors or not. Presently there are guides dedicated to larger cities in Spain listing where dogs are welcome in restaurants, with more also being permitted on public transport, such as in our neighbouring countries. I would rather see some excrement which will dry and blow away than all the plastic and tins discarded everywhere (by humans), which will never biodegrade. These end up in the guts

of animals in oceans or wash up on shorelines, where humans are most likely to come into direct contact with the toxins (relating to your ‘pristine’ beach comments). Every day in countries around the world, animals are fighting for their lives. They are enslaved, beaten, and kept in chains to make them perform for humans’ ‘entertainment’, they are mutilated and confined to tiny cages so that we can kill them and eat them, they are burned, blinded, poisoned, and cut up alive in the name of ‘science’, they are electrocuted, strangled, and skinned alive so that people can parade around in their coats, and worse. Healthcare woes I WOULD like to respond to Sue in your Letters page (issue 1607), who is worried about her healthcare here. Who told you your healthcare would come to a stop if we exit the EU? As pensioners living here you will probably be paying tax in Spain, if you are you should have a Spanish social security number which entitles you to healthcare if we are in or out of the EU. If you are living here and using your EHIC E111 you are breaking the law as this is intended for holiday and short stay. If you have healthcare after filling in an S1 form then the UK government still pay for your healthcare and there is no reason for this to stop upon leaving the EU. This is the information I have received after researching this. I will vote ‘Leave’ either way because I believe in Britain and in the long run all us Brits will be better off. Dario via email

Friendly help NEW research by Oxford University has found that having lots of friends could be ‘better than morphine.’ “Endorphins are part of our pain and pleasure circuitry - they are our body’s natural painkillers and also give us feelings of pleasure,” said Katerina Johnson from Oxford University. Adults aged between 18 and 34 were asked a variety of questions about their lives, and also took a noninvasive, physical pain test. Researchers discovered that people with larger social circles tended to have a higher pain tolerance. One theory is that social communications generate positive emotions when endorphins bind to opioid receptors in brain. Ms Johnson said: “These results are interesting as research suggests the endorphin system may be disrupted in psychological disorders such as depression.”

HITTING CHILDREN: Could have long-lasting effects.

Harmful smacking BEING smacked as a child could have long-lasting effects according to researchers. Professors from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan in the USA, analysed 50 years of research involving more than 160,000 children. They said their research found that children who were smacked as

five-year-olds were slightly more likely to be aggressive and break rules later at school and were more likely to misbehave and defy their parents; the opposite effect of what parents intended. Those who were hit were also more prone to act out and could be more distracted in the classroom, they found.

The researchers also investigated cases of adults who were hit as children and found the more they were smacked, the more likely they were to experience mental health problems later in life. The researchers classed smacking as hitting a child with an open hand without causing physical injury.

A smoother way to enjoy those smoothies MANY people are turning to smoothies as a healthy way to boost their intake of fruit and vegetables and to help lose weight, but they could be doing more harm than good. A leading nutritionist believed a lot of people put too many ingredients in their home-made versions and they should be 50 per cent liquid base, 25 per cent fruit and 25 per cent veg.

So how can you make the most from your smoothie? The base should be a low fat liquid such as coconut water or skimmed milk and not fruit juice and fruit should be limited to a single serving such as a cup of berries or a single piece such as apple or banana to limit sugar intake, then fill with vegetables. If your smoothie is replacing a meal such as breakfast you can include a few filling foods such as oats but if it’s a snack or after a workout, keep it lighter. Keep all of the pulp from fruit and veggies in your smoothie for much-needed fibre and make sure you have them as part of a healthy diet. Living off smoothies will leave you starting to lack essential nutrients such as iron and zinc.

by a specialist in allergies to determine whether or not his symptoms are allergic. Once they are confirmed to be allergic then it is the time to find out what is causing them. To this end, tests are needed which consist of small injections into the arm (Prick Test) which allow us to discover what the patient is allergic to. Sometimes blood tests are also needed but generally the skin test is sufficient. I would recommend that he stops taking antihistamines and steroids for a month as they can affect the results of allergy tests. One the cause of the allergy is determined, if antihistamines don’t help there are injections which can control symptoms very effectively. Regards

I’m getting old Category ‘B’ Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’M getting old. Well actually I am old. I don’t like the ageing process but of course it’s better than the alternative. All sorts of things start happening to the body and in some cases stop happening. On a recent visit to my doctor she told me that I should stop eating chocolate, stop smoking, stop drinking, stop eating red meat, stop having fried food, cut down on my dairy products, walk four miles a day and stop having sex… I asked if this would make me live longer and she said ‘No but it will definitely feel like it!!’ The other day I was trying to do something on the computer. By the time I’d logged on I’d completely forgotten what it was I was going to do. What’s that all about? I walk in to rooms, look round and walk out. Not a clue why I went in. I stand there like a doughnut looking around for some inspiration but nothing. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been driving somewhere then realised that I’ve gone past the turning because in my head

I’m going somewhere else! Please tell me it’s not just me. Today I was looking to hire a car so I went on to a car rental company’s website and all I had to do was put in my username and password and I was all set. Was I heck? Could I remember my password? I thought I did. I tried it three times then got locked out. I got a message saying I now had to change my password. I spent the next hour trying to do that but it all got too complicated as they wanted my driving licence number and credit card details. Driving licence was fine but I couldn’t remember what credit card I had on their file. I tried three which were wrong and then I got locked out of that screen! I’ll call them tomorrow if I remember. I have so many pin numbers and passwords it’s impossible to remember them all and you are always told don’t write them down, so I hide them on my phone and code them. Then I forget the code! I have decided to change my password to ‘incorrectpassword’, so if I put it in wrong or forget it at least when that pops up I’ll have half a chance of remembering it. When you get old, I’ve decided, two things happen to you. One is that your memory starts to go and the second ….. err, err, mmm can’t think of it at the moment. I’ll get back to you on that one.

CATEGORY ‘B’: Holders can drive a normal passenger car and some other vehicles. THE majority of drivers in Spain have a category ‘B’ licence, which means they are certified as qualified to drive a normal passenger car, but being qualified in that category also allows you to drive some other vehicles. As a category ‘B’ licence holder you are permitted to drive specially-designed passenger cars, for private use, ranging from a small urban car, an SUV, minivan or sports car. There is no limitation to the type of vehicle, so long as it is a private car, but there are limitations to the physical characteristics. Namely, a private car must be equal to or less than 3,500kg in weight and can have a maximum of nine seats, including the driver. The vehicle can only be driven for private and leisure use and not for any commercial gain, whether that be for business or carrying passengers in exchange for cash or goods. In the case of vans, you can drive any van

in which either passengers, goods or both can be transported, whether that vehicle is approved as a private or commercial vehicle, so long as it has a maximum weight equal to or less than 3,500kg and no more than nine seats including the driver. For both cars and vans you can also attach a trailer with a category ‘B’ licence, provided the total combined weight of the vehicle and trailer do not exceed the maximum weight permitted. If the trailer exceeds 750kg and the joint weight between car and trailer is 3,5004,250kg it is necessary to take two specific practical tests, which covers vehicle manoeuvres and dealing with traffic. For combined weights of over 4,250kg, it is necessary to obtain a BE category certification. This requires both a theoretical test and two practical tests, one of manoeuvres and the other in traffic.

By Matthew Elliott THE interest of overseas companies in investing in the British property market has been steadily declining due to fears over the impending Brexit vote, according to a new report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. A survey of the respected group’s members found that 40 per cent had seen marked reductions in investment, while in London 80 per cent claimed that uncertainty over the result was hindering investment. Only 5 per cent said they had seen an increase in interest during the year’s first quarter, and others reported fears that major internationals are considering relocating to the likes of Dublin, Frankfurt and Paris. Even uncertainty over whether multinationals would leave is holding back further investment as they typically own huge chunks of the capital’s property market. The report added: “Brexit could see less demand for higher end properties as highly paid executives could follow their headquarters to mainland Europe.

We can, therefore, suggest house prices could decrease in the immediate to short term.” A further impact on property should a Brexit come to pass would be within the construction industry as an estimated 10-12 per cent of workers come

from overseas. Construction costs have already escalated sharply due to a lack of skilled workers. Summarising the report chief economist Simon Rubinsohn said: “There is no doubt that since the EU referendum became a certainty following the gen-

eral election last May we have seen a decline in interest from overseas investors in UK commercial property. At least in the short term, we know that international retailer and service providers are finding the UK market less attractive.”

BRITS, Germans, Scandinavians and Russians typically dominate the headlines of the expatriate property market in Spain, but when it comes to numbers a far smaller nation is punching well above its weight. Belgians are actually the fourth largest buyers in Spain at present and command a solid 6.26 per cent share of the foreign market. This puts them just behind their German and French neighbours (at 7.33 per cent and 8.72 per cent respectively). The continentals lie substantially behind Brit buyers who continue their dominance with a 21.34 per cent share. Second homes in Spain have proven a popular venture for many Belgians and in 2015 there were 2,907 purchases, a 1.3 per cent rise on the previous year and representing a dramatic eight purchases per day on average.

IN previous articles I’ve talked about the psychology of buyers’ first impressions when visiting your property for the first time, and the importance of controlling the good appearance of your neighbourhood or community and the good appearance of the exterior of your apartment or villa. Before we get into the buyer setting foot in to your property , I want to first cover one of the most important points of the sale and that is, the sales price! The sales price of your property will either sell your property fast or it will take a long time to sell, so getting this right is obviously very important and there are golden rules to follow. It’s common for sellers to overvalue their property due to the emotional attachment and the fact that sellers want the highest sales price possible.

As a senior surveyor I have carried out hundreds of valuations over the years and there are a number of golden rules in pricing a property correctly. Get it right and the property will sell fast, get it wrong and the property could take years to sell or you will have no offers at all. Here are my 10 top tips for selling your property. 1. Getting the sales price right is vital, remember a surveyor is professionally qualified to do this work. 2. Psychologically the first number stays in the buyer’s mind, so for example the four in €487,500 will stick and seem cheaper than a price starting with a five as in €500,000. 3. Don’t overprice your property, it’s a common mistake. 4. If you have priced your property too high you may have to discount the price at some time in the future. 5. If you need to discount the price do so by at least by 15 to 20 per cent in one big discount. 6. Avoid discounting your price over a period of time by

small amounts, it doesn’t work and your property will be on the market for a long time. 7. After you have discounted your price, avoid buyers thinking there could be something wrong with your property and explain you are in a hurry to sell and moving away, hence the discount, even if not true. 8. Saying you’re eager to sell quickly is good, buyers will want to visit and make an offer. 9. Avoid telling buyers you’re in no hurry to sell, it puts buyers off. 10. Don’t lose a sale by haggling with the buyer over some items of furniture or fittings he wants included in the price, just agree and focus on selling your property. I HATE it when you wish someone good luck, and back comes the smug reply: “You make your own luck.” Sure, being really organised will help, but there are some people who are just born lucky and seem to have access to the Philosopher’s Stone and capable of turning base metal into gold. You know the ones. Whatever they do in life, they always seem to land on their feet, or as my old Dad used to say: “If they fell down the loo, they would come out with a box of Quality Street.” Then conversely there are those who always drop the bread butter side down.

GOOD LUCK: I will continue to touch wood and do the lottery. The ones who realise that the ITV on their car is overdue, and then get pulled over by the Guardia on their way to the test centre. There is good and bad luck - of course there is. Why some have far more than their fair share of either, however, is a mystery.

It’s the same with accident prone people. I have friends who are so butterfingered, that you would never dream of breaking out the best crystal. You just know that at some point something will get spilt, dropped or knocked over. It’s as inevitable as a politician say-

Give him a new Airbus A380 for Christmas, and he would break it by Boxing Day. So don’t give me that guff about making your own luck, it’s a contradiction in terms anyway. UNTIL a few years ago the first week of May was the traditional time when heavy rainfalls and some thunderstorms used to saturate the soils of agricultural fields, orchards and gardens deeply just in time for the late spring sowing and planting of plantlets for summer vegetable crops and the swelling of fruits that form from late spring blossoms. Checking the weather forecast for the first fortnight of May this year doesn’t look too promising in terms of urgently wanted rain, so taking steps to minimise the need for water in gardens makes good sense and the longer and not too hot days of May allow one to get much done along these lines before the heat of June. THE third part of the story of a woman with a rare skin disease and her beloved dog, Edward. One day on the bus home from art, laden with art books etc, Edward stopped the bus at the beach. As we passed the beach the bus stopped and the driver turned to me and said:”Do you want this stop love.” I said “no.” “Well your dog pressed the button.” You can see that Edward has a sense of humour. I am not allowed to cry as it closes my throat altogether and I have to go into hospital and be put on a drip until it opens again. Sometimes it is very hard not to get upset so I just bury my face in his fur and it all falls away. After all, nothing can be that bad as long as I have Edward. He even stays in hospital with me as it would make my throat close if I get upset at being parted from him. The nurses have

I used to dread going shopping and had to go when the shops were quiet or people would bang into me and take my skin off with their bags or trolleys. Now I can go anytime as they give Edward more room and it protects me. One day last November, Peter was in the garage and I started to choke. I gripped the sink and Edward let himself out into the

conservatory and into the garden, barking his head off till Peter came in from the garage to help me. I was terrified. In recognition of his valued work, Edward is paid £30 (€38.47) a week by the government. He saves them over £29,000 (€37,192) a year. I love Edward more than I ever thought I could. If Edward never worked again I could never part with him. I love him more than life itself. I hold his lead, he holds my heart.

Heroes in a half shell By Matt Ford TURTLES can often appeal as a family pet, not least because they are widely available and quite cheap to buy in Spain, with thousands traded each

year, although sadly they are almost always sold with insufficient information regarding their long-term care and eventual size. There is some history here, since Iberian lakes and rivers

are awash with now-prohibited red-eared and yellow-bellied sliders (Trachemys scripta), originally released by unwitting owners when they outgrew their containers, but now established and outcompeting native turtles and other species. The most common species available legally are map turtles and false maps (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohni and G. p. pseudogeographica), which are easily identified by the row of black points running along the centre of the shell. Males grow to around 15cm shell length, with females much larger, so adults need plenty of space.

Also increasingly common is the Florida red-bellied cooter (Pseudemys nelsoni), which also attains 15-30cm in shell length, although the common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) is perhaps the ideal starter species since it reaches a more manageable 12-14cm. Unless maintaining your turtle outdoors, housing should consist of a sufficiently-sized aquarium or plastic container. This small ‘tortugeras’, typically featuring a tiny island and often a tacky palm tree or two, are NOT SUITABLE FOR ANY TURTLE and are outlawed across much of Europe, though sadly not in Spain.

The party is still going on in the East Midlands city. • Meanwhile, last weekend Southampton kept alive their hopes of European football with a 4-2 win over Manchester City, West Ham won 3-0 at WBA, Everton defeated Bournemouth 2-1, Watford knocked over Aston Villa 3-2 and Swansea beat Liverpool 3-1. • At the bottom of the table, Newcastle, 1-0 winners over Crystal Palace; Norwich, who lost 1-0 at Arsenal in Arsene Wenger ’s 750th match as manager and Sunderland, who drew 1-1 at Stoke, are all battling for their lives to stay up. 19th Hole Golf Society The Tony Slinn Memorial team waltz. ON Thursday, April 28, 40 players took part in this team waltz in memory of Tony Slinn. Tony, as well as being a stalwart supporter of the society, was also a very able and dedicated treasurer for several years. With beautiful weather conditions and a Lorca circuit that is an absolute pleasure to play, it was a good day for some good scores. The winning team scoring a very impressive 95 points of Ralph Hunter, Doug Birrell, Karyn Esposito and Pete Dow, certainly had a day to remember, with Doug taking first spot in the Men’s Individual Competition with 44 points. Pete Dow came in second place with 41 points and Karyn took the Ladies’ prize with 36 points. Tony would have been overwhelmed by the turnout and atmosphere in which the competition was played. Results: First: Doug Birrell, Ralph Hunter, Karyn Esposito and Pete Dow. 95 points. Second: Stephen Puddephut, Ray Wicking, Nick Pogson and Ron Curtis. 89 points.
