The long furry summer CALPE to spearhead plans for dog beaches By Linda Hall With summer just around the corner, the pining of dogs in Calpe has been heard in the corridors of power and the beautiful Costa Blanca North town may now be pioneering special dog beaches. Following numerous requests from local dog owners in Calpe, the Citizenâ€™s Participation Department, headed by Carole Saunders, has decided to organise a survey to gauge the level of neighbourly support. The local authorities, aware of the controversy surrounding allowing dogs on beaches,

have decided to allow citizens the final say. There will be a meeting especially for dog owners on April 18 at 7.30pm in the Salo Blau. All those interested and affected will be able to raise their ideas and concerns, while a follow up meeting will be held exclusively for residents living near the beach.

Airport arrests FIFTY PEOPLE, including one minor, were arrested at Alicante airport in the first three months of this year, 80 per cent more than during the same period in 2015. Thirty-eight people were stopped for attempting to travel on false papers but the remainder - principally from Albania and China - were wanted by police.

A WOMAN died in Benidorm on Tuesday (April 12) and her partner has been arrested as the main suspect, the National Police force has reported. Officers were sent to a home on Calle de Las Flores after the deceased’s daughter phoned the police station at 1pm and upon arrival they reported finding the woman dead on a bed and her partner next to her in a seemingly drugged state. After arresting him for allegedly stabbing the woman to death, the man was taken to Hospital Marina Baixa for treatment for a minor knife wound. However investigations will continue as the body presented just one knife wound. The Benidorm police have stated that the arrestee had been reported by the deceased for abuse in December 2014, but he was absolved and they continued to live together.

Look away now TERRA NATURA’S latest inhabitants won’t be welcomed by everyone, as they are amongst the largest species of tarantulas in the world. There are two new inhabitants – a birdeating tarantula (Asiodora parahybana), and a Goliath spider (Theraphosa blondi), which can reach 30 centimetres when it spreads its legs. They have been housed in the permanent exhibition of poisonous creatures, each in a different terrarium. Each can weigh about 150 grams and often live in dark, damp corners in

A total of 7.47 per cent more waste was generated than in the same period of 2015. The figures revealed that 1,687.82 tonnes were collected this year, against 1,570 last year. Alfaz girl dances her way to Dutch National Ballet ‘INSPIRATION to young people’, chosen from 2,000 young hopefuls

REBECA GARCIA, a nineyear-old Alfaz del Pi resident, is bound for Amsterdam’s Muziektheatre. She has been accepted by the Dutch National Ballet following a round of auditions attended by 2,000 young hopefuls. Rebeca is the first foreign pupil that the school has accepted, and she could eventually win a place amongst the Dutch National Ballet Company’s 80 dancers. Thankfully, Rebeca will not need to leave her two siblings, as they can spend the first year studying at the same centre, after which they will be able to enter the Dutch school system. Her parents must now find work and accommodation in the Netherlands so that the fam-

Convict hid in lorry to escape AN investigation into a prisoner â€™s escape from Fontcalent Prison suggests that he hid in a lorry delivering food to the kitchens. CCTV cameras showed him near one of these vehicles during the day, although his absence was not noticed until roll call that evening. The escapee was Mohamed Berhil, remanded for punching his wife and mistreating her in front of their two underage children. Berhilâ€™s four-and-a-half year sentence for this offence was confirmed on the same day that he disappeared, and he now faces two further court cases for ignoring a restraining order that prevents him from approaching his wife. The woman is now under police protection.

Safe walking routes for Javea schoolchildren

THIS year around 200,000 people made the pilgrimage By Linda Hall THE preceding day’s winds dropped and the following day’s rain held off for the Santa Faz pilgrimage on April 7. The strip of cloth said to bear the imprint of Christ’s face arrived at the monastery 536 years ago, and this was

the 527th time that pilgrims walked the six kilometres from the city. This year around 200,000 people, minimally fewer than in 2015, took part. As custom demands these included the president of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig, and Alicante City’s Mayor Gabriel

Echavarri, as well as other Generalitat and city hall dignitaries. For the first time in 21 years the regional government and town hall are controlled by socialist parties, but these had only one representative at the head of the procession, Carlos Gimenez who as Town Festivities councillor, was responsible for unlocking the chamber behind the altar where the relic is kept. He was accompanied by religious authorities and representatives from the Partido Popular, including the party’s regional secretary general Isabel Bonig and Cesar Sanchez, who heads the Alicante Provincial Council and is also Calpe mayor.

Later there were mutual reproaches between Ximo Puig and Bonig with respective accusations of fostering old-style ‘national Catholicism’ and curtailing religious freedom. Somewhat happier were the 40,000 young people who peeled off from the procession and made for Playa de San Juan for a maxi-botellon, twice last year’s number. Two hundred police keeping discreet watch were called on only five times to break up potential brawls. Medics treated two cases of alcohol poisoning, 45 cases of excessive drinking and 22 cases of sunstroke. Five people were admitted to hospital, one of them with a suspected heart attack.

These are safe routes that children can take to walk to school without the need to use public or private transport. Parents and volunteers will take turns to supervise the safety of the pupils walking to the Graull, Maria Inmaculada, Vicente Tena and Trenc d’Alba schools. Further routes to the L’Arenal and El Port schools are planned for the next school year.

The town hall has now invited tenders to provide life-savers, rescue services, first aid posts and assistance for the disabled on the town’s beaches from June 1 until September 30 and over Easter. The contract, once awarded, will be eligible for a two-year extension, the town said.

Unpopular Smokers’ Club makes an industrial move (Mark)

CONSENSUS is needed by pupils’ parents REGULATIONS have changed for introducing a continuous day at infants’ and primary schools. The STEPV teachers’ union proposed eliminating municipal approval, claiming that a town hall cannot set schools’ hours. Consequently town halls are now required only to issue a ‘reasoned’ pronouncement on the modification, the Generalitat’s Education department announced. In practice town halls

cannot veto a 9am to 2pm school day, although consensus amongst pupils’ parents is still needed and at least 55 per cent must back the change. The CCOO union, which is in favour of a continuous day warned that the Education department should justify the decision to adjust municipal approval. “Otherwise this opens the door to an appeal,” a CCOO spokesman said.

agement were arrested after 900 plants were found in industrial units in Xeresa and Miramar. The club treasurer was remanded and police impounded plants which were not only grown for use at the club, but also destined for sale. The Club de Fumadores was applauded by the PP opposition party although this pointed out that the club should exist ‘neither in the town centre nor the outskirts.’

Denia’s role as a war zone to be discussed HISTORICAL experts will meet to trace Denia’s history By Linda Hall A CYCLE of talks will trace the history of Denia at war, starting from the First Century BC until the 20th century. Subsidised with a €4,000 government grant, the talks will begin in June and continue until Novem-

ber. The list of speakers has not yet been finalised, although Denia’s municipal archaeologist Josep Antoni Gisbert said that they will include Spain’s principal historical experts. They will outline Denia’s role as Sertorius’s naval base during his rebellion against Rome between 80 BC and 70 BC, through to the 1936-1939 Civil War.

Better beach for the disabled INCREASED budget will improve services By Eleanor Hawkins VILLAJOYOSA’S Social Welfare department has increased the budget for its Accessible Beaches scheme this year, to improve services provided to people with disabilities over the summer period. The times assistance and services for the disabled provided on Centro beach will this year be extended to 10am to 2pm,

and 4-7pm seven days a week and they will be available from June 15 to September 15, with a break from July 24 to 30 for local festivities. Social Welfare Councillor Jose Ramon Ucles explained that the council considers the service to be a vital one which needed to be extended, as it was used by 3,700 people last year. He stressed there is also a transport service available for users

who are unable to get to the beach. The tender process to award a contract to run the services will be launched over the next few weeks, Ucles said, and the winning company will be in charge of maintaining equipment and providing all services. “We want it to be a real break for families and ensure users feel comfortable,” the councillor stressed.

Black month for Vinalopo jobs MARCH was a bad month for employment in Vinalopo, with most areas registering an increase in the number of people out of work. Elda saw 16 more people join the dole queue, bringing the total number of jobless people in town to 6,950. Petrer registered an extra 21, bringing the total to 4,782, while

Villena saw an even bigger increase to the lists with 70 extra meaning there are 3,962 people out of work. However, there was better news in Monforte del Cid and Novelda, which saw unemployment fall by 20 and 15 people respectively.

Clearing empty land plots reduces fire risk POLICE are now demanding owners of unused land clear them of overgrowth By Eleanor Hawkins FOLLOWING a year of gentle coaxing, the authorities in Javea have decided it is time to crack down on owners of empty plots of land who have failed to clear them of overgrowth, which is putting the area at extra risk of fire. Since the new citizen safety bylaw was put into effect, continual calls have been made for people to keep up maintenance of their land or clear it as quickly as possible, as overgrown land not only damages the image of the town but also increases the number of mosquitoes and rodents present, yet this has in many cases been ignored. Therefore it is now time for action, and the council has announced that as of now the Local Police force will be demanding that the owners of untidy grounds clear them, and those who fail to do so will be reported. The local agricultural association was informed of the crackdown at a meeting with Mayor Jose Chulvi, Agriculture

Go-ahead given for road repairs MUTXAMEL Council will be spending €93,000 on improving roads in the town this year, the Services and Maintenance Department has announced. The projects, included in this year’s urban improvement plan, include spending €50,000 on removing potholes and levelling road surfaces where most needed, €25,000 on repainting faded horizontal road signs, €6,000 on replacing vertical signs, and €12,000 on installing speed bumps. Another €3,000 has been allotted to replacing name plaques for various streets which have become deteriorated.

honorary status as adopted son of the town and a gold medal. The dictator was awarded the title in 1940 by then Mayor Jaime Perles Ferrer, while the medal was handed over by Joaquin Garcia at an audience at El Prado in 1972. Business creation concerns ALICANTE Province was the only one of the great Spanish engines which registered a fall in the number of new businesses created in the month of March, official figures have revealed. Although various voices have expressed concern over the fact that 100 days after the general elections a government had still not

been formed, this failed to affect creation of businesses in 36 Spanish provinces. The total number of businesses created in the province in March was reported to be 456, a 7 per cent drop, whereas in other areas increases ranging from 4.8 per cent in Madrid to 25 per cent in Barcelona were recorded.

For the record DIGITISING old documents SANT JOAN D’ALACANT is moving with the times, and has employed a specialist company to create digital copies of historical documents at the Municipal Archives. The project, Cultural and Municipal Archives Councillor Clara Rodriguez has reported, has so far included storing digital copies of books, which include minutes of plenary sessions dating from January 2 1870 up to 1940. Exceptions, Rodriguez explained, include the years 1871 and 1872, which are missing, and 1920 to 1922 due to the poor state of the book, which means it cannot be manipulated until it has been carefully restored. The final aim of this project is to allow better conservation of the original documents, while providing the general public and investigators with more access to the town’s historical records.

Road education NORWEGIAN youngsters on two day course to become street-smart By Eleanor Hawkins NORWEGIAN school Den Norske Skolen Costa Blanca is the latest on the list of Alfaz del Pi schools to receive a visit from the Local Road Education Programme, to get students street-smart in an aim to reduce accidents. The programme, which has been running for the last six years, will be teaching more than 1,000 local students at both public and private schools how to stay safe on the roads this year. It is coordinated by the council’s Education and Citizens Security Departments and travels from school to school to impart knowledge. The first day is somewhat monotonous for the youngsters, who this year are fourth to sixth year secondary students, as it involves explanations on how

Water at last RESIDENTS of Xalo can once again, after a 13 month wait, turn their taps on, fill a glass of water and drink it as analysis has confirmed that the water supply is now fit for human consumption. Although the drought continues, repairs to pipes, improvements to the water plant at Parcent and work by the Alicante Provincial Council, to tap into pipes running from Parcent to Benissa, have finally put an end to the lack of drinking water in the area, Water Councillor Gerard Fullana reported. Better management following years of neglect has also seen daily consumption fall from 2,250 cubic metres to 1,560, the councillor explained.

Two men apprehended for domestic violence ARRESTED within hours of each other By Eleanor Hawkins TWO men were arrested for separate domestic violence offences within hours of each other in Denia last week, the specialist Artemis Group has reported. The first, a Spanish man in his 60s, was sent to jail in Fontcalent by a judge after breaking a restraining order and approaching his ex-wife for the second time, ignoring warnings

issued by the authorities on what would happen if he continued to break the order. The second arrest was made after a young woman, in a state of shock, called 112 emergency services to report that her former partner had broken into her home, and tried to attack her before fleeing. Since its creation in 2005, the Artemis Group, one of the first municipal units created in Spain to fight gender and do-

mestic violence, has received a number of important awards for the work it carries out to protect victims. Yet the problem continues, with case numbers this year very similar to last year. The 10 officers in the unit have registered nine official reports, eight arrests and put six protection measures into place over the first three months of 2016, Citizen Security Councillor Javier Scotto reported.

Suspects identified ONE 54-year-old man has been arrested and another 40year-old is under investigation by the Guardia Civil over the theft of 13 tonnes of oranges in Calpe. Investigators reported that the men were suspected of having stolen the oranges, and creating 17 false documents to certify their origin, enabling them to be sold. Witness reports were vital to identify the suspects, the police force reported.

Selling drugs to the police AN 18-year-old man has been handed a year-and-a-half suspended jail sentence by an Alicante court for trying to sell drugs to plainclothes police officers in Benidorm. The youth was arrested in July 2014 after offering the officers ecstasy on Avenida del Mediterraneo.

Fibre optics on the way INSTALLATION of fibre optics in Finestrat was finally approved at a council meeting last week and work has started on phase one of the project, which will see cables placed initially on Avenida Pais Valencia and Calles Elx, Alacant, Calp, Catral, Gandia, El Campello, Alfas and Castello. Also included in the initial phase are Avenidas Federico Garcia Lorca, Enric Valor, Miguel Hernandez and Rafael Alberti plus the Balcon de Finestrat residential area. Local mayor Juan Francisco Perez said: “today is an important day for Finestrat because, finally, we can announce that the arrival of fibre optics is imminent. We’re going to give priority to the commercial area to allow the companies working there access to new technologies. “We’ll also give priority to the Balcon de Finestrat urbanisation where it’s vital to provide better phone and internet access to residents and also improve communications at the primary school there. Our intention is to get the cables in so everyone has access to the new technology as soon as possible.”

The airport, which registered a 21.2 per cent year-on-year increase in passengers in February and was beaten only by Malaga in the middle-sized terminal ranks, is expected to see almost 10 million people board or disembark from flights between now and October 29 when the summer season ends. Flight schedules provided to airport management company Aena by the airlines reveal that there will be 9.8 million seats on offer, a 17.4 per cent increase in numbers for summer 2015. The air traffic control tower at AlicanteElche is expecting to deal with 57,000 flights before the end of the season, and airlines are increasing the size of aircraft on their routes to and from the UK particularly as more tourists are attracted to the coast due to un-

TLC for busy street ONE of Denia’s busiest streets, Calle Marques del Campo, is undergoing extensive repairs which will affect traffic over the next few weeks, the council has announced. The street, considered the town’s main artery for tourists and commerce, was in desperate need of some TLC as apart from a few small jobs no work had been done there since it was last renovated in 1995 and the surface had sunk in many areas, Works and Services councillor Maria Josep Ripoll reported. Due to the size of the task and the street’s busy nature the job is to be done in stages, with the first currently underway and affecting the stretch between Calles Diana and Carlos Senti. This has meant that incoming traffic has been diverted to Calle Ramon y Cajal. Municipal workers are lifting the paving by hand, levelling the ground underneath and putting it back into place, replacing broken stones as they go, and although the work on this stretch is expected to take one week this all depends on what they find as they go along, Ripoll stressed.

Challenge met AIM was to increase the amounts of glass recycled in the towns which took part By Eleanor Hawkins L’ALFAS DEL PI stepped up and met the Pobles Envidriables glass recycling challenge, breaking the goal it had been set by more than 28 tonnes. The challenge, arranged by the Generalitat Valenciana regional government, Ecovidrio recycling company and 20 provincial town councils, ran between December 2015 and February 2016 with an aim of increasing the amounts of glass recycled in the towns. L’Alfas’ individual goal was to increase its average amount of glass by 10,800 kilos to a total of 146,707, yet thanks to individuals and businesses the town smashed its goal and reached the impressive total of 174,680 over the three month period. Of the 20 places which took part, just nine managed to reach their goals: l’Alfas del Pi, San Fulgencio, Segorbe, Villa-real, Sagunt, Torrent, Cullera, Ontinyent and Xativa. In accordance with the rules of the challenge these nine will be included in a draw for Mr Iglu children’s playground equipment which will be held on April 18.

Not to be missed ALICANTE’S Archaeological Museum (MARQ) has been added to National Geographic magazine’s list of must-see museums in Spain, an honour which just 30 of the more than 1,000 museums in the country have received. The list, which states that the museum ‘covers different ages from the prehistoric, the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages to the modern period,’ also includes prestigious centres including El Prado, Reina Sofia and the Pompidou Centre along with the Principe Felipe Science Museum in Valencia. MARQ is celebrating its 14th birthday this year and holds more than 81,000 pieces spread over an area of 9,000 m2.

CYCLING CHALLENGE: Youngsters took part in a total of eight races. By Eleanor Hawkins BENISSA recently saw its streets inundated with bicycles as the town hosted the first race on the competition calendar for the Alicante Province Cycling Schools challenge.

One hundred and twenty youngsters from Benissa, Altea, l’Alfas del Pi, Sax, Mar Alacant, Novelda, Elx, Castalla, Petra Club, Inca Club, Balaguer and Xabia took part in a total of eight races, which were made particularly interesting by a

final uphill stretch. After the final race ended Cycling Federation judges announced the results and trophies were awarded, with Raul Cabrera Ronda winning the prize for best local cyclist and coming fifth in his category.

Lost girls found TWO teenage sisters who had been reported missing on Wednesday, April 6, after failing to arrive home from school in Novelda were found the following day by their parents in the Sierra de la Cruz mountains. The girls, aged 15 and 16,

were reportedly found in good health and a search operation ordered by local mayor Nelson Romero was called off and the volunteers and police officers involved were thanked for their assistance. No further information was released on their disappearance.

Battling beetles WORK consists of removing bark and dead pines By Eleanor Hawkins EL CAMPELLO’S Environmental Department has launched an attack on tomicus or pine shoot beetles in the Les Puntes de Gonsalvez forest. Work consists of removing bark and dead pines

from an area of dry pines which the beetles are attracted to and placing traps to catch the pests. Lokimica Company employees are doing the work under the supervision of the environmental authorities, and beetles caught will be kept for research purposes,

the council has reported. Les Puntes de Gonsalvez is a forest of young pines, the beetles’ favourite target, yet they are not the only attacker in the area, as pine processionary caterpillars have also been battled in the area over the last few weeks.

Freedom campaign for books in Finestrat BOOKS have newfound freedom in Finestrat this month as the council’s Culture Department has launched a Llibres Lliures (free books) campaign to mark the Day of the Book. The council has put 40 books in Spanish, Valencian and English into circulation at a number of exchange points across town which all members of the public will be able to swap for one of their own to share

the love and joys of literature. Exchange points are located at municipal offices in the historical centre and La Cala, the town hall, Casa de Cultura, municipal library, tourist offices, health centres and a number of private businesses. Culture councillor Maria Llorca explained: “The campaign is aimed at encouraging people to read. All they need to do to take a book is leave one of their own in its place.”

Good news for La Nucia event slow sector CONVENTION tourism is returning to Alicante City for the first time in years, according to statistics provided by the Alicante Convention Bureau. McDonald’s looks to expand its already existing empire By John Smith SEVERAL years ago, the McDonald’s Corporation spent a lot of time and money in trying to stop a restau r a n t i n Wi m b l e d o n fro m calling itself McChina, but it lost when the judge ruled that no one would be likely to confuse the two operations. Today, things are different and the McDonald’s group has announc e d t h a t i t p l a n s to o p e n 1,250 new restaurants in China, as well as a lesser number in Hong Kong and South Korea to add to the 2,200 outlets it already has in that area. In keeping with a long term policy, the bulk of these new outlet stores will be franchises, purchasing all of their products from McDonald’s and thus saving the US group significant set up costs. When these plans go through, China will become McDonald’s largest market after the US, although it has also seen its Russian

HIGH STREET: Santander branches in Britain and Spain are under threat. THE red and white of Banco Santander draping many a high street in both Britain and Spain is under threat, as the financial powerhouse elects to close more than 400 branches in Spain by the end of the year. Deemed a move towards a more at-

tractive digital banking platform, it has now been confirmed that the bank wants to cut 1,250 jobs, mainly through natural wastage as the bank attempts to streamline its services. In a lewd example of corporate jargon, country head Rami Aboukhair told

employees: “The current economic context, greater regulatory requirements and the evolution of client behaviour toward new technology make it necessary to accelerate our commercial transformation.” There are presently 3,467 Santander

branches in Spain, meaning around 13 per cent will be closed, with the smaller ones leading the way. It’s not an entirely surprising move given that Spain has long been one of the most overbanked countries in Europe, a situation dramatically curtailed by the financial crisis.

By John Smith WHEN billionaires start investing in any particular industry, wise money follows them and makes the market even stronger, and the triumvirate of George Soros, Bill Gates and Carlos Slim, whilst acting independently of each other, all seem to have invested in Spanish building and housing construction since the 2008 crash. Mexican Slim, said to be one o f t h e w o r l d ’s r i c h e s t m e n , made a bid for Barcelonabased Fomento de Construcciones & Contratas SA in March through one of his subsidiaries, Inversora Carso. This is the latest of his investments in Spain, which started in 2014 to help stabilise the business. As part of the deal, Carso also made an offer for Madrid-based developer Realia Business SA, in which FCC owns a 37 per cent stake, and Bill Gates also has shares according to Bloomberg. Although no longer a young man at the age of 76, he clearly continues to enjoy the excitement of predicting recovering markets, and is well-known for taking advan-

tage of depressed prices when investing in companies. Whilst Spain had a colossal surplus of properties, he has gambled on the fact that the underlying economy is strong enough when it adds overseas property purchases to expect a definite property boom in the long run, and current results seem to suggest this expectation is beginning to see a rise in prices and purchases. With sales of €5 billion, billion euros is Madrid was Europe’s fifth the real estate sales figure for strongest real estate market the market in during a recent 12-month Madrid period ending in October 2015, according to a PwC report. Things aren’t all rosy in the Spanish financial sector, but if the country can attract expatriates, purchasers and investors when it has no long-term government in place and is constantly criticised by the EU for its fiscal policy, rich investors must be confident of the potential for a decent return on their investments. Even if things don’t move too quickly in the future, these investments are bound to help stabilise the Spanish construction industry for as long as these investors are patient.

WELL, I’ve just returned from a short break in Denmark and you know something? It is simply awash with Muslims. Oh no, I hear you groan, here he goes again. Same ol’ same ol’. Well, this time you couldn’t be more wrong. You see I truly believe that at long last Denmark is a Western community that is actually on the road to getting it right. And do you know the secret? It’s called give and take. The first thing you notice, is that apart from the occasional elderly female, there is hardly a Burka in sight. Even more importantly, nowhere at all did I observe one person clad in the antagonising full veil. Instead, the faith of most young women was merely defined by an often quite trendy headscarf and the occasional pair of leg-

gings (not a bad choice when you consider the climate!). Quite a number of these ladies were also employed at supermarket checkouts and nowhere did I observe a restriction on their handling of any alcohol or pork products. The men too were clad in more acceptable attire. After all the Thobe was designed to protect its wearer from sunlight, flies and mosquitos, none of which are actually too prevalent in those chilly northern climes. Because of this obvious desire to integrate into Western society, the whole atmosphere is different. As you walk through the shopping centres and street markets, gone are the feelings of distrust and discomfort that hang so heavily over the public places of other European countries. People are laughing together and polite to each other. On one afternoon my girlfriend’s sister took part in a public gospel singing event. Among the crowd of observers, I noticed quite a number of headscarf-covered young people clapping along with the rest of the audience. Because of this more open exis-

tence there is no need for Muslims to form the protective ghettos that blight our cities of the West. Consequently people in Denmark are more integrated in their home environments as well. Give and take. The true answer to peaceful integration. And the first major step in the right direction. Banning the Burka. LAST summer Iberswitch sent us a letter that enclosed a small plastic strip that displayed seven numbers. We were told these numbers were valid for six months, being our free entry for 26 weeks in the EuroMillions lottery. Have Euro Weekly readers gained by this? The lottery office will not take the plastic card, nor do they display lottery numbers for checking. No newspaper gives twice-a-week lottery results. We have no computer. A letter to its MD remains unanswered. Claims are to be made by the end of March. Since then we have received another similar lottery card, valid for one year. Claims are to be made within three months of draw, so it seems the first nine months of the draw cannot be claimed on. I would like to hear from anyone who has claimed money by this windfall. toll road, you refer to the cost of an 80 ki l om et r e j our ney f r om Malaga to Estepona costing €7.85 in low season and €12.40 in high season. Thi s paym ent does not cover the entire 80 kilometres and only relates to Fuengirola to Marbella and Marbella to Estepona. That is why tolls are only paid at Calahonda and San Pedro and why, upon entering these roads, it i s i m possi bl e t o l eave wi t hout payi ng. On t he ot her hand t he Malaga to Fuengirola section and the Marbella ring road, which belong to the State, can be left by any of the slip roads. Those people with a long memory will remember the controversy surrounding the expropriation of many properties prior to the building of the Fuengirola to Marbella section. Both toll roads were built by Agroman/Ferrovial for which, in return for the private investment, they were granted a concession to charge tolls for a period of some 50 or 75 years. I USED to be a confirmed Levi jeans man, but I have noticed in recent years how the quality seems to have diminished. But then that’s the way with most things. Whereas the life of these famous strides once seemed to go on forever, these days they wear out at the knees or hip pockets with depressing frequency, and at up to €70 a knock, that is simply not on. What people of this generation probably don’t know is that Levi’s were virtually unheard of in the UK before the music explosion of the 60s, and the advent of groups like The Who and Small Faces, and more crucially the Mod phenomenon that made them famous. It was the Mods in the early

The days of jumping in the bath wearing a new pair of Lee Cooper unshrunk jeans in order to sculpt them to the shape

of your body, were coming to an end. Levi’s up to this point were merely regarded as workmen’s gear. The official casual Mod ensemble in the early days was Levi’s, a Ben Sherman shirt, often gingham with a button down collar, and a pair of suede desert boots. Amazingly, the Levi’s and

desert boots could be purchased for £1.10 shillings, £1.50 pence in today’s money - and the only place that sold them in my town at the very start of that era was Millets. Ben Sherman was a new company in the early 60s, and became an overnight success almost entirely due to the Mod patronage.

Nevertheless, I still have a couple of pairs of my old faithfuls hanging up in the wardrobe, ones that I purchased in California years ago, and they are like old friends. Wearing them, I may look Homer Simpson dated to young whippersnappers, but I always feel Roger Daltrey cool.

This can result in a post-pregnancy belly which women tend to think means they are overweight or their muscles need a workout, yet sit-ups and other abdominal exercises can in fact worsen typical problems such as back pain, digestive problems and even incontinence caused by a weakened pelvic floor. New mums can check whether they

are still suffering diastasis, Vicetta advised, by lying face up on a bed, bending their knees and raising their heads. If a gap appears in the abdomen, it’s time to see a physiotherapist who specialises in the condition for help. “You need to know how to get out of bed, sit on a chair or pick something up from the floor. Physiotherapists teach all these things to help patients recover as quickly as possible,” the doctor explained.

New cells AN exciting discovery has been made by scientists at the TSRI Investigation Centre in La Jolla, California, which could see important developments in the battle against type one diabetes, a form which generally appears in children and young adults before the age of 30. The TSRI informed of the discovery last week of a new type of immune cell with the potential to stop immune system cells inhibiting insulin creation within the pancreas. Tests are under way to try and find a way to increase the number of these cells to help them reach the pancreas.

DEAR doctor, I’m a 45-year-old man and although I’ve never been to the gym or anything like that, I’ve always walked a lot and considered myself to be in a decent enough physical condition. In your case, the breathlessness could be a remainder of your cold, but it could also be a sign of another illness so you should be seen by a specialist to rule this out. - Should I see my doctor for him to carry out any tests just in case? - I would recommend you see your usual doctor and later, if the tests he runs do not bring the cause of your problem to light, you should see a specialist. - Can I do anything to improve my breathlessness myself at home? - It’s not an easy thing to improve at home, but taking things easy for a while and reincorporating physical activity into your routine gradually after the infection, following a healthy diet, not going out in the cold, trying to lose weight if you are overweight and stopping smoking could all help. However, the best thing you can do is see your doctor.

THE world famous Curtis Institute of Music of Philadelphia will be performing in Teulada once again in May. It will be their sixth visit. Their European Tour 2016 will start in Spain on May 15 with concerts in Alicante (May 18), Teulada-Moraira (May 19) and Lliria (May 20), before moving on to Dresden, Berlin, Bremen and Munich. Curtis on Tour is the global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. They will also offer a number of master classes in piano, violin, viola, cello and clarinet on the tour. Eight years for a home FOR anyone wondering just how much buying a property typically shaves off your life, new figures released might be of interest. The average resident in Spain would have to devote roughly eight years of their working life in order to be able to buy a home, a slight rise on last year, but a huge drop from the boom years. The average price of property per square metre stands at â‚Ź1,433 with vast regional differences. Combining median wages with average per square metre prices means that forecasters can predict how long people would have to work in order to make a purchase. In Murcia the average individual would have to work just 5.4 years, whereas in the Balearic Islands one would have to devote almost 16 years of working life to the cause. In 2007 the average amount of salary needed struck 13.7 years, meaning it has almost halved since the advent of the financial crisis.

Spainâ€™s two-tier housing market THERE is now a fully fledged two tier housing market in Spain which is seeing an escalating rise in regional variations and making it increasingly difficult to speak of the market as a whole without making constant disclaimers. In the first quarter of the year

average Spanish house prices rose by 1.4 per cent, a modest figure which suggests a steady and true course. However, property prices in Barcelona saw an almost double-digit rise with a huge 9.2 per cent increase in just one quarter. Madrid also saw a dramatic rise

at 7.5 per cent and both cities saw rises in all of their districts. Interior provinces including Jaen and Alava saw steep decreases while Alicante registered the biggest surprise by also posting a decrease. Figures for the Costa Blanca region showed a slight decline

and experts wonder whether Brexit and a weaker pound might have played a role. Malaga Province which includes the Costa del Sol performed strongly by posting a 6.7 per cent rise, while other expatriate hotspots also saw healthy increases.

Let us hope that if you breed your bitch, that it is for the right reasons and in the right way, with lots of love, thought, and care put into your decision. If you are new to Spain, or disappointed with your first few years gardening, our books will help you recognise that garden-

ing here in Spain is very different to northern Europe and enable you to avoid further problems and expensive mistakes. Although Easter was relatively early this year many plants and some trees were in flower and a good number of fresh spring vegetables were ready for harvesting, especially on the coast where peas and broad beans can be up to two months ahead of those inland and up a few hundred metres. Recently I suggested how you could grow them on a small scale and the books ‘Living well from our garden

Mediteranean style’ and ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean style’ explain more fully how to go about this. Growing your own makes sense from five points of view. • You can do so ecologically from day one. • There are difficulties of obtaining ecologically grown vegetables in many areas and if they are available they can be pricey and not fresh every day. • You can harvest produce daily, or even just before each meal, when at their best. • You can grow tastier and less tough varieties, including

heirloom and heritage variety no longer grown commercially. • You don’t need much space. Just 10 builder’s buckets can be very productive. • You can grow and eat not just by looks, taste, smell, and texture, but also by their health benefits. As explained in ‘Living well from our Mediterranean garden’ many fruits and vegetables contain beneficial vitamins, minerals, and fibres. A DESIGN studio in Los Angeles was the site where Tesla Motors unveiled its highly-anticipated Model 3 aimed at bringing electric driving to the mass market in 2017. At less than half the cost of Tesla’s previous Model S and X, the latest release will sell from $35,000 (€31,000) in the US, and manage 215 miles on a full charge.

BOWLING GREEN: Was still playable despite the overnight downpour. BENITACHELL Bowls Club Winter League squad were away this week at Greenlands.

Torrential rain on Tuesday and very black and overcast sky on Wednesday morning left everyone wondering whether the game would go ahead. Greenlands Winter League squad sit at the bottom half of the table, but at home they have only lost one of their last six games (four - eight) to this year’s champions. On arrival it was still very overcast and although the green was playable, the overnight

downpour had left a soaking wet carpet surface, which made the going very heavy. There were two contenders for top rink this week and Skip Jeff Richards, Tony Lawley, Derek Mawson and Linda Richards were the winners by one shot. A great six shots on the fifth end and winning the remaining five ends of the game saw them secure two valuable away points. Not to be outdone Maggie

Lawley and her team of Jacquie Roberts, Mary Cockell and Tim Woodcock took a further two points winning 18 - nine. The overall result was four points to BBC and eight to Greenlands. This is a venue where BBC has struggled to win and had managed only two points on their previous visit. The four points mean BBC has climbed into third position and with only one game left in this season it is all to play for.

Winter returns Javea to Oliva Nova success ON Friday April 8 Montgo Golf Society played a Bogey competition at Oliva Nova, kindly sponsored by Stella and Simon Fox who provided a lovely prize table for the day, including several jars of Stella’s famous home-made marmalade. Unfortunately winter decided to rear its ugly head and the members were welcomed to the course by a cold and blustery morning, which turned even bleaker as the first groups teed off and the heavens opened. This was enough to deter the more delicate members, who scuttled off to the warmth of the clubhouse. Chief amongst these was one of today’s sponsors, Simon Fox, who tried to justify his decision by standing on the clubhouse balcony and attempting to convince those players completing their first nine holes that they should also come in. All credit to Stella, who showed one of the Fox family has some moral fibre! The weather brightened up, however, the strong wind continued and the day’s scores reflected the difficult conditions with only one member managing to break par.

In first place, with an excellent score of plus one, was Feli Baybut, closely followed home by Geoff Willcock with a score of level par. Roy Jones was third with a commendable minus one, and John Snelling took the final prize with a score of minus two on countback. Shaun O’Gorman, David Fotheringham and Linda Coe were the unlucky players to miss out. There were four nearest the pins on offer, with Norman Howell taking the third and a thrilled Elizabeth Grin collecting her first prize with the society by winning the 11th. Nearest to pin with his second shot on the 18th was Geoff Willcock, and Dennis Hammond took the prize for nearest the pin on the fifth with, by his own admission, his only decent shot of the day. Of the four single matchplay games scheduled only one was completed, Ed Wallace and Gordon Gleeson halved their match and will need to replay. WITH 36 teams competing over three days in the Finca Guila Open, Javea Green BC were delighted to hear that the eventual winners were team players Dave Gardiner, Pat Pittaway and John Pittaway. They reached the final after winning all of their group matches and were confident, until they realised their opposition from El Cid, David Bluff, Hazel Brown and Ian Brown, had also won all of their matches! In the final Javea were 1-5 down but managed to pick up eight shots over the next two ends to secure a great victory. Earlier in the week the annual Chairman vs Management challenge was held and 56 players turned out. The event was sponsored by Infinity and lunch was provided by the club. Jenny Rich, Javea Club Captain, took the opportunity to present a cheque for €450 to Maggie Mackenzie and Yvonne Wright of Cancer Care Javea. The money was raised by Javea members and visiting bowlers during Jenny’s year as captain, and she thanked everyone for donating so generously.
