People power played an important part in the decision as residents frustrated excavators from destroying the rocks and organised protests. Unfortunately, the battle isnâ€™t over just yet, as the company seeking to expand the marina has two months to appeal the decision, but it remains a fine and heartening triumph for those who care about their community, and have worked tirelessly to protect it.

The N-332 at Calpe has remained unchanged for 30 years when traffic was lighter and the town had 2,000 residents. The main road is now one of the busiest and most dangerous in Spain and the Calpe turnoff has always been a notorious accident black spot. Solutions have been requested by a succession of town halls for decades and permission to improve access to the town centre from the main road was received last year from the national government. Controversial bike lane postponed PLANS to extend the controversial cycle lanes in the middle of the road have been postponed, pending consultation. Concerns over safety and security have led to the decision. It had been planned to extend the lanes along Avenida Jaime I and part of the junction with Alfonso Puchades. The design of the cycle lane has created controversy from day one. Opponents claim that having traffic passing on both sides leaves cyclists too exposed.

Blue Zone parking info TEULADA Town Hall reminded residents and visitors that the summer paid parking timetable has now begun. Posters, many of them in Spanish, English and German have now gone up throughout Teulada and Moraira. From now until October 31, Blue Zone parking regulations will apply on weekday mornings between 9am and 2pm, and from 5pm until 9pm in the evening. Saturday mornings should be paid for between 9am and 2pm but Saturday afternoons, Sundays and fiestas are free.

er with the Centro de Especialidades and the Foietes health centre. The street has heavy traffic at the best of times, explained Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, Councillor of Mobility, Traffic and Transport for

Benidorm. The traffic has increased additionally now that it is the only access to all three centres, while work continues on the new Foietes park, he said. The speed bumps incorporate zebra crossings, but are

lower than usual to ensure that they do not pose as obstacles to ambulances. They will still slow down traffic, making the area safer for children and the many elderly people attending the medical centres, De Zarate added.

In his eighth Budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne announced very few changes that are likely to affect expatriates on 16th March 2016. The Personal Allowance is increasing to £11,500 in 2017/2018 (it will be £11,000 per person in 2016/2017), and the higher rate band will apply to income in excess of £45,000 in 2017/2018. One of the biggest changes announced that will affect individuals is actually no change at all: the Capital Gains Tax rate is to decrease to 10% where gains fall into the basic rate band, and 20% where such gains fall into the higher rate band. However, this will not apply to non-residents of the UK, who do not generally pay UK Capital Gains Tax on such gains in any case (unless disposing of assets used in a trade in the UK). That said, if you leave the UK and dispose of UK assets you already own at departure and return to live in the UK within five complete and consecutive UK tax years, this will affect you, as such gains will become taxable in full in the UK tax year in which you return to the UK.

Budget 2016 By Robert Croizat, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks Non-UK residents are still subject to UK Capital Gains Tax on disposal of UK residential real estate, and the rates for such disposals have not changed – the gain is taxable at 18% where it falls into the basic rate band, and 28% where such gains fall into the higher rate band. The good news is that, where the property is held personally or in trust, tax only

applies on the gain accruing since 6th April 2015. For UK residential properties held within companies, the date from which the gain is taxable varies and advice should be sought if considering selling such a property. ISA contributions are increasing again, to £20,000 from 6th April 2017, although as non-UK residents can no longer contribute to an ISA, this should not be relevant to expatriates. From April 2018, Class 2 National Insurance Contributions will be abolished. These are usually paid by the self-employed in the UK, but in certain circumstances can be paid voluntarily by individuals working or selfemployed outside the UK, so that they can ‘top-up’ their contributions to the UK state pension. These are much cheaper than Class 3 voluntary

contributions which expatriates often pay, so that they can increase their entitlement to the UK state pension if they have not worked enough years before they have left the UK to entitle them to the maximum UK state pension. Most of the changes that will affect non-UK residents from 6th April 2016 were announced previously. These changes include: • Abolition of the tax credit on dividends. • Payment of UK bank interest gross of tax. • Abolition of ‘wear and tear’ allowances and mortgage interest relief in excess of the basic rate of tax on rental properties. • An additional levy of 3% of Stamp Duty Land Tax where a second property is being acquired. • Changes to the non-domicile rules.

So this Budget has not made many significant changes, but there are big changes applying to those who have moved or intend to move from 6th April 2016 onwards. It is always a good idea to take advice when moving country, but if you have concerns over how these changes will affect you, you should take advice sooner rather than later. MOORS AND CHRISTIANS: The fiestas are still a man’s world after the rejected proposal. By Linda Hall MOORS and Christians fiestas re-enact old battles, but a new one is being fought before Campello’s celebrations have even begun. Problems began when the town’s Moors

and Christians Fiestas Committee rejected a proposal from the Cavallers de Conquesta group. They wanted a woman to occupy the ceremonial post of Ambassador with a man as the equally ceremonial Standard-bearer next October. The proposal was not turned

through gender bias or discrimination, the committee emphasised afterwards. “The town hall has always maintained its distance,” said former mayor Juanjo Berenguer. “All decisions are run past the assembly and everything is voted on.”

Ondara Council limits terraces BUSINESSES must leave space on pavements By Sam Croft THE Ondara Council will only allow bars and restaurants to have a terrace if they leave a minimum pavement width of 1.2 metres in order to allow â€œfree circulation and pedestrian comfort.â€? Details are set out in the new regulatory tax ordinance rate

Rates rise for sports facilities THE Denia Council has voted to increase rates for municipal schools with sports facilities. The average increase is 21 per cent, with some sports including basketball and football rising to 30 per cent, and represented

one of the contentious issues in the session. Sports Councillor Marian Tamarit defended the necessity of the measure in order to cope with costs associated with regularisation of sports services, but the opposition was sharply critical of the increase.

The power of the online blog UTILISING social media and marketing in Valencia By Sam Croft THE Valencian Institute of Touristic Technologies has published a manual which aims to give destinations in the region the necessary tools to optimise their presence on social networks and social media. After tackling in previous manuals the management of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and

YouTube,Â as well as the appropriate etiquette that goes along with them, this new manual centres around one of the most powerful tools of online communication: blogs. The manual goes into detail about some of the many advantages of blogs for the tourism sector, including the ability to communicate with future visitors and the use of blogs for online marketing.

According to the manual, only 22 destinations in Valencia currently use blogs, in spite of them being one of the most useful online tools for drumming up interest in, and showcasing a given locale. The manual hopes to steer other Valencian municipalities into a more technologicallysavvy direction, creating an even bigger boom in an already flourishing region.

Concert to fight against cancer THE professional music conservatory of Xabia, in collaboration with the Health Council, has organised a benefit concert for April 9. The concert will take place at 7.30pm in the event room of the music conservatory, and will be headlined by the Grupo Innova, which has prepared an illustrious musical journey through the different soundtracks that have

marked the history of cinema. Tickets will cost â‚Ź5 and all proceeds will go towards the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). The course had a budget of €450,778, and was financed by the Generalitat Valenciana Regional Government, the European Social Fund, and the La Nucia Council. During the course the participants were able to learn about various duties and skills related to forests and

Lift repaired after giving 12-volt shocks MAINTENANCE workers were sent to repair a lift in Alicante that links Calle Juan Bautista Lafora with the walkway of Postiguet Beach, after some of the people using it apparently received a 12-volt shock when they pressed the outside button. Despite the incidents, the lift continued to function all afternoon, and maintenance workers were eventually able to repair the short-circuiting button.

Belarus does Costa Blanca REPRESENTATIVES filming a new TV programme By Sam Croft BENIDORM and the Costa Blanca have set their eyes on Belarusian television as a potential avenue for attracting new tourists. A few weeks ago a group of Russian journalists visited the area, and after that it was time for Belarus to get in on

the action, as representatives from Channel Belarus One came to explore various towns along the Costa Blanca in order to film a new TV programme. The visit has included a trip to the Las Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja National Park, a wander around Benidorm, and a visit to the Denia fish

market to see the fishermen in action. The show, Around the Planet, is expected to be broadcast in Belarus on Channel Belarus One to an audience of eight million, as well as on Channel Belarus 24, a satellite channel which is shown in Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and Canada.

Employment programme A LUCKY budding journalist recently finished her work placement in the La Nucia Town Hall, through the Salari Jove employment programme. She worked in the Press Department for the last eight months, and received an overall grant of â‚Ź10,945. During her time carrying out this placement, the beneficiary undertook various tasks and responsibilities to help her become well-versed in

different types of communication, both internal and external. The work experience had an equal focus on both theory and practice, and helped her to gain an increased understanding of the communication and public relations sectors. The Salari Jove Employment Project aims to help out unemployed citizens under the age of 30, by giving them work opportunities that might not be available through conventional channels.

Council suggest shops extend opening times AS a means of attracting greater crowds to the ailing town centre, Alcoyâ€™s Commerce Councillor Vanessa Molto has suggested that shopkeepers and business owners in the area should consider opening on Saturday afternoons. She explained that she has contacted the general director of commerce to â€œsee if it is possible to make the existing bylaws more flexible,â€? in regards to opening times. Molto stated her belief that the involvement of all residents is important.

Molto also proposed getting in contact with other cities to compare models and ideas. Other cities outside of Valencia have been put forward as potential examples to emulate including Cartagena, Oviedo, Gerona, Pamplona, and Toledo. The existing problem in the region is that town bylaws restrict the opening times of businesses and establishments, but Molto hopes that Alcoy can eventually get the ball rolling on the proposed extended opening times.

Chicken pox vaccine time WILL be administered to all infants under the age of 15 months By Sam Croft IT is officially chicken pox vaccine time in Valencia. The vaccine will be administered to all infants who are under the age of 15 months as of April 1, meaning those born on January 1, 2015 or after. Around 33,000 babies are expected to receive the vaccine. The Health Council has already sent the necessary instructions and information to all of the health departments and health centres in the region. A first dose of the vaccine will be administered to all of the children included in the aforementioned age bracket, and they will receive a second dose when they are between three and four years of age. Vaccines will also be given to 12-year-olds who have neither had chicken pox nor been vaccinated previously. For these children, the vac-

Father ordered to pay fine THE Valencia Criminal Court has ordered a man to pay a fine of â‚Ź720 due to his teenage daughter repeatedly failing to turn up for her school classes. The judge considered it proven that the man had failed to provide the appropriate example and leadership that his young daughter needed. The sentence determined that the father failed to adopt the required measures to encourage the girl to go to school, even though the girlâ€™s absences were well-documented and despite repeated warnings from social services.

Aerial Fair SECONDARY students from 50 centres in Valencia will have a chance to show off their homemade drones at an upcoming Aerial Fair in Elche. The students made the drones as part of a project in which they learned to construct drones that could have a social application, like fire detection. The unveiling of the drones will take place on April 15 at the fair, which has been organised by the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche and the research company El Caleidoscopio (The Kaleidoscope).

San San wraps up with success and controversy GANDIAâ€™S San San Music Festival was once again a huge hit this year. The popular musical festival racked up 36,000 visits over the course of four days, but was also slapped hard with six fines from the Local Police; two fines were for violating closing times, and the other four for exceeding permitted noise levels. Representatives from the police have stated that the festival stayed open later than it was legally allowed to on Thursday (March 24) and Saturday (March 26). Additionally, noise levels at the event exceeded the legal number of decibels on multiple occasions, forcing the police to impose

further fines. Town authorities also explained that during the festival, more than 200 people were fined for various offences, including 23 for urinating in public, 77 for participating in public drinking, 13 for selling food or drinks illegally, and 60 for screaming in the streets. Urban Planning Councillor Vicent Mascarell has indicated that over the next few weeks the council intends to organise a meeting with San San organisers, residents, and business owners in the tourism sector to analyse the impact of the festival. The meeting will also study possible changes that will improve the experience for future editions.

Bins upgraded on Benidorm streets NEW rubbish collection system to be unveiled

Urano, the bins are now side loading instead of back loading, and the individual bins of each building are being replaced by group containers, which will be located in key points on the streets.

Cleaning Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate has underlined the improvements as necessary, and pointed out that this change will allow the new containers to accommodate for a greater flow of rubbish.

a proposal which suggests that students in the town’s schools do not get expelled under any circumstances. The agreement argues that expulsion is “a widely used corrective measure” in the educational sphere, but that its

Valencia leads the pack in GDP growth SAW the biggest increase of all Spanish regions By Sam Croft OF all the Spanish regions, Valencia saw the biggest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increase in 2015 in terms of volume. The region demonstrated growth of 3.6 per cent. The findings, reported recently by the Spanish Regional Accountancy, also indicated that the overall Spanish GDP

grew by 3.2 per cent thanks to a push from all of the autonomous communities, with 11 of the 17 rising by more than 3 per cent in 2015. The Spanish Regional Accountancy has attributed the leadership of Valencia to the evolution of the manufacturing industry, as well as improvements in the construction sector.

However, experts advised that this data should not be an excuse for Valencia to let its guard down, keeping in mind that other parameters may come into play. For example, in regards to gross domestic product per capita, Valencia finished in eleventh place with â‚Ź20,586, below the national average of â‚Ź23,290.

North meets the south TWO Norwegian university students recently finished up a rewarding three weeks in Alfaz del Pi, where they have been working side by side with children and adults with disabilities. Their visit has been made possible thanks to the Pilot Programme, a government initiative which allows youths from abroad to experience life in different parts of Spain, while also gaining valuable hands-on experience for their degrees.

The two youngsters spent the beginning of their time in Alfaz participating in sports activities with disabled children, and capped off their stay by getting fit and healthy with some adults with Down Syndrome. This is the second occasion that Norwegian students have completed some educational training in Alfaz del Pi thanks to the Pilot programme.

and different types of bream which was impounded along with the rest of their equipment. The men, both from Murcia, were reported to the regional government’s Environment department and the fish was sent to Asilo Hermanos Cholbi, Javea’s residence for the elderly.

The chapel located off the Teulada-Moraira road has been repainted and the paved area and children’s playground cleaned and tidied up.

San Vicente’s sister Constanza lived in Teulada and tradition claims they were out walking where the Font Santa (Holy Well) stands today when she became thirsty. San Vicente performed a miracle and water started to bubble from a rock as it still does today, even in the driest of years.

Books now balanced FINESTRAT Council approved the 2016 budget at its last plenary session with an income of €13.41 million and outgoings of €13.37 million. This is in line with the Adjustment Plan introduced during the last legislature with very good results that balanced the books, reduced spending while covering the population’s needs,” said Finestrat’s mayor Juan Francisco Perez. Pollution too high in Alcoy ALCOY’S ozone limits last year exceeded ozone limits set by the European Union (EU) and World Health Organisation (WHO). Memories of 77 years ago WELSH sea captainâ€™s name is still revered By Linda Hall ALICANTE was the last city to fall in the Spanish Civil War. This was remembered recently at the port where short speeches were made and flowers strewn on the water in a simple ceremony attended by representatives and councillors. This was the first time there was official presence at the yearly ceremony organised by Alicanteâ€™s Civic Committee for the Recovery of Historic Memory.

They were commemorating April 12 1939, when republican refugees waited at the port for ships to take them to safety. These never arrived thanks to a blockade by Italian navy destroyers although one ship, the SS Stanbrook, did get through. The British steamer with its cargo of oranges and saffron was captained by Archibald Dickson, whose name was never forgotten and is still revered in Alicante. He allowed 2,638 passengers to board the cargo ship and took them to safety.

Evaluating Xabia Council IN a plenary session, the Xabia Council has approved that it will voluntarily undergo an evaluation that analyses its level of transparency, access to public information, and good management. It is an exam which will be headed by the International Transparency Organisation, an NGO dedicated to combating corruption. They have created guidelines for measuring the level of transparency of public institutions, after which it publishes them online. The decision was made after a motion was presented by the Youth, New Technologies, and Transparency Councillor, Ximo Segarra. He noted the advances that the council has made recently in regards to transparency, and felt that the time had come to take things a step further.

The volunteers keep the children amused with games, reading to them or simply

keeping them company, but at the same time they also give their carers the chance to leave the room and take a break. The Red Cross contribution to the young patients’ well-being is very positive, the hospital staff commented. “This is very interesting and helpful as it makes the time go more quickly for them and boosts their state of mind, or at least during the moments when they are happiest,” said Amparo Exojo, who is in charge of the hospital’s Maternal-Infants’ section.

Put-up job didn’t foil police BENIDORM police made three arrests following a robbery at a Rincon de Loix restaurant. Their ages ranged from 18 to 27 and one of them, apparently a customer, was in the restaurant when two hooded men entered. Armed with knives and a pistol they threatened the clients before fleeing with €1,000 in a car that was parked nearby. Hours later a man reported the theft of a car, whose description coincided with the vehicle used by the two hooded men to make their getaway. National Police officers became suspicious when they found that this person knew one of the supposed victims. He finally admitted that the four had planned the robbery together and the supposed customer was there to advise the others when to strike. Both men, who were found to have police records for similar offences, were remanded after declaring before the judge. One of the men who actually carried out the robbery has since been detained in Valencia.

Gym thieves arrested NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested three people in Alicante as the presumed perpetrators of a theft committed inside a gym located on Avenida Ansaldo on the San Juan Beach. The men were allegedly caught red-handed carrying a box of tools which they were supposedly going to use to carry out the crime. The men were apparently surprised while they were in the process of dismantling some of the equipment in the gym. When they were apprehended, two of the three men were dressed as street cleaners in an apparent effort to justify their presence on the streets in the early morning when the crime took place.

Now the village (population 527) is in the news again, but for more commonplace reasons. After investigating the complaints of a resident about the noise produced by the local biomass plant, the regional ombudsman recommended that it should be soundproofed. The plant, which processes organic matter to produce fuel, exceeds the permitted number of decibels, the ombudsman confirmed. The noise is worse at night and prevented a neighbouring resident from sleeping at night.

finding that this was excessive, has contacted the biomass company, which is now soundproofing the plant.

MUNICIPAL employees had to demolish an end section of Denia’s Moorish town wall. This was not part of the original structure but was added when the wall was restored in 2007. The Urban Development Department acted on the advice of the municipal architect and town hall building technicians who agreed that the restored section was in such bad condition that repairs were not viable. Residents living nearby were relieved by the demolition, as they had feared that the entire structure would collapse, they said later. The demolished section was an addition and not part of the original town walls, stressed Urban Development Councillor Maria Josep Ripoll, who explained that it will be rebuilt to maintain the outline of the original structure.

Aldi health worries WHILST unlikely to trigger widespread illness, a number of biscuits and snacks sold through the UK branches of UK supermarket business Aldi are being withdrawn from sale due to a remote possibility that they may have been contaminated by what are described as pests. The snacks which include cheese thins, shortbread, chocolate chip cookies, ginger nuts, potato bakes and fudge brownies, were made

THE National Statistics Institute released figures on March 31 which showed that the Spanish deficit over GDP for 2015 was 5.16 per cent, nearly a full percentag e p o i n t o v e r th e targ e t agreed with Brussels and even greate r t h a n t h e d o w n b ea t E U forecast from a few weeks ago of 4.8 per cent.

The immediate response from the Spanish Finance Ministry was that these figures were not officially announced by the government, and therefore no comment would be made until the interim minister Cristobal Montoro appeared at a press conference,

where effectively he confirmed the figure s but bl am ed t he autonomous region for missing targets rather than the national government. This will be the eighth-year running th at t he t arget has been missed, and it is likely that the EU will call for further budget cuts in order to try to regularise the situation. This i s of cour se goi ng t o be very difficult when there is an interim government only and the policies from those on the left, who may be able to form a coalition, require greater rather than lesser public spending. Spain continues to float bonds and borrow money on an almost weekly basis, and despite some fears for the future, a 30-year bond was recently several times

oversubscribed, but the fact is that the economy is not that healthy, although in fairness, the majority of t he Eur opean and wor l d economies are struggling. The uncertainty of the Spanish government certainly doesn’t help and each day brings a different option. Pablo Iglesias offered to step aside to allow a coalition between the two left-wing parties and Ciudadanos, but then the leader of the centre right party has indicated t hat he woul d not ser ve i n any coalition that allowed Podemos any power at all. It does seem that a new election is the most likely option and perhaps if any party is able to form a stable government, even in coalition, the economy may look forward to a period of sustained gr owt h, al t hough i n t he background there is always the spectre of Catalonian independence and the removal of its income from the exchequer.

FOLLOWING the poor figures announced by Spain with regards to their deficit on the 2015 trading year, Britain has not only matched them but has gone even further into the red for the last quarter of that year, creating a record for the worst figures since records started to be kept in 1948. The annual deficit for 2015 was 5.2 per cent at £96 billion (€121 billion), much higher than Spain’s unexpectedly bad result but for the fourth quarter of the year, it shot up to 7 per cent which some pundits blame on fears of the Brexit. Basically, this means that the UK is importing more goods than it exports and there can be many reasons for this, not least being the value of the pound which has been slipping against other major currencies, and a lack of manufacturing capacity. On the plus side, there is a little good news in as much as the economy itself grew by 2.3 per cent during 2015 compared to an optimistic forecast of 2.2 per cent, which has surprised a number of analysts. The problem with trade deficits however is that if companies or governments need funds to pay for goods or services, in theory, there will not be enough cash ‘sloshing around’ in the UK to satisfy all of the borrowing needs and this means that foreign

This is why long-term investment bonds are issued and sell fairly well, but if overseas investors start to be unworried about any economy, then they may well try to offload these bonds even at a loss, and it makes it more difficult to sell future bonds. nor of the Bank of England, who warned a select committee that a Brexit could adversely affect the British economy, the Bank’s Financial Committee has recently indicated that uncertainty about the Brexit vote could itself cause instability and hurt the future of UK borrowing. In all of this uncertainty however, one thing

is certain and that is that following June 23 a decision will at least have been made, even though a vote to leave would still cause speculation and a possible financial backlash whilst exit negotiations take place. Perhaps with the furore over the collapse of the British steel industry, tariffs against cheap imports will be introduced.

IT has been a rocky start to 2016 with the great British pound crashing lower from levels of 1.40 down to the mid 1.20s. Volatility is expected to remain very high in the coming months through an ongoing easing bias by the European Central Bank (ECB), and given the approaching Brexit vote which is the elephant in the room for the pound. In March the European Central Bank expanded their bond purchase programme in both size and scope. In addition the deposit rate was cut further into negative territory. However the aggressive action actually led to a stronger euro in the aftermath which on the face of it looked unusual. Previously the ECB have targeted a weaker currency through their easing policy and to some extent it was successful with the euro experiencing broad weakness through 2015. However it seems the ECB have now changed their tactics and for now at least they have laid down their weapons in the currency war. Weakening the euro further especially when other central banks were actively trying to devalue their currencies

at the same time was getting harder. Instead the ECB are targeting the credit channel and are trying to push and streamline lending to the private and business channels in an effort to stoke growth and inflation. Time will tell if this will work and all ears remain on the ECB for hints on future policy direction. It does seem that the ECB are running out of ideas and with inflation still low and falling their credibility could come under scrutiny. However for now at least the euro should be a little firmer given the change of tactics in the short term by the ECB and with the UK still a long way from a rate rise this leaves GBP/EUR consolidating between 1.25 to 1.30. Some have argued that the recent depreciation in the pound has been overdone. However as we get closer to the UK vote on Europe on the June 23 2016, the uncertainty could create huge volatility for the pound, especially if it looks like a Brexit is likely. The sheer uncertainty of a Brexit is hard to quantify and we have seen arguments both positive and negative for a Brexit event and the future health of the UK economy. For the pound the uncertainty alone, if a Brexit is looking likely, is almost certainly going to lead to a sizeable sell off. It is a huge risk event for the pound in the short term regardless of the actual longer-term impact. Fasten your seatbelts!

It is a sad fact, that the human race is simply not ready. One of the consequences of this manifestation is the quality and diversity of leaders they elect. Their choice of presidents has, over the years, been simply appalling. They’ve elected ignorant war mongers, bible punching peanut farmers, film stars, those with links to organised crime, actual criminals, those of questionable patriotism, and blatant liars. The quality of candidates for high office is a direct reflection of the electorate. It therefore comes as no surprise that they now

VERY few Spaniards go to church these days and those who do are usually very young or quite elderly. LET’S hope that Altea Mayor Llinares and his council use the opportunity to clamp down on arrogant, or ignorant, cyclists riding along pedestrian pavements at the seafront. While I am all in favour of encouraging cycling, this should not be done at the expense of pedestrians. Lycra louts and casual cyclists are putting children, pensioners and walkers in general in danger. Create cycle lanes, yes, but carve them out of roads, and reduce the traffic flow to discourage motorists. Altea’s previous attempts to accommodate bicycles included creating a bike lane by painting a blue path through the pedestrianised central and northern parts of the Paseo. The council then belatedly reversed track by creating a cycle bypass on the central part. The problem is that cyclists rarely use it, and instead prefer to cycle, often at high speed and/or in groups along the pavement, putting the safety of walkers at risk. Why is this loutish behaviour permitted? The council needs to put up ‘cycling forbidden’ signs, and raise money to build better facilities for bikers, by hitting them with on-the-spot fines. Nearby Alfas de Pi has managed to sharply reduce car traffic along its seafront and create paths to separate walkers and cyclists. Hopefully Altea can up its game and do the same! Raising awareness of diabetes MEDCARE are offering a test for €1 and a free meeting with a top diabetes nurse THE incidence of diabetes has reached epidemic proportions across the globe, causing the World Health Organisation (WHO) to name the disease as its focus for World Health Day on April 7. About 350 million people worldwide have diabetes, and according to WHO the figure is likely to double in the next 20 years. Through the World Health Day campaign, WHO is pushing for greater awareness of diabetes as well as better prevention and treatment. Health organisations around the world will join the campaign, and Medcare GP clinics on the Costa Blanca are doing their bit with diabetes tests for just €1 and a free diabetes information meeting with a top diabetes nurse. Medcare GP, Dr Najma Hussain said: “It is vital that people with diabetes get the correct healthcare and advice as the disease can lead to se-

I was on Captopril 50 mg twice a day and then my doctor at the Salud put me on Captopril 50 mg in the morning and Alodipino 5 mg at night, as he said the Captopril would not last 24 hours. The only upset I have is a slight dizziness in the morning but this could be unrelated. I would very much like your thoughts on my current medication as my doctor has now left the Salud and is working in the local hospital. which needs adequate daily control, not only by medication but also by following a correct saltfree, low fat and sugar diet. Captopril is a good medicine for controlling blood pressure but its effects only last a few hours, therefore I think you should be prescribed another, more modern and safer drug which acts for 24 hours. Regarding the Amlodipino, if you do not suffer side effects it can, in combination with another drug, work very well to control your blood pressure. Lastly I would remind you that before asking for a change to your treatment you should note down your blood pressure readings and show them to your doctor.

Support group visits Elche By Keith Baker THE HELP of Denia & Marina Alta Parkinson Support Group braved the wet and wind in Elche recently to visit the Salvador Artisana shoe factory. Despite the inclement weather it ended in smiles all round as the group left armed with boxes of new shoes and handbags at bargain prices. They then enjoyed a delightful lunch at a lovely restaurant in the middle of the Palm Gardens. Unfortunately, the rain scuppered the plans to visit a beautiful old church to watch preparations for Semana Santa and a visit to the wonderful interactive Archaeological & History Museum. Fresh new start for Javea U3A JAVEA U3A has a fresh new look to it with a new president and a new committee. Eric Atkins was voted in as the new president of the 1,021-strong organisation by members at its annual meeting. He succeeds Stephen Burke, who has been at the helm for the past two years. The new president gave a special vote of thanks to leaders of the 66 groups and promised to get round and meet as many of them as possible.

Our Plaice in the Sun open in Albir TRADITIONAL menu attractive to tourists and locals By Keith Baker SET up just last autumn, Our Plaice in the Sun has quickly become a popular place to eat in Albir. Owned and run by Paul and Debbie, Paul said he’s pleased at how quickly they have built up a solid customer base amongst the locals. They see a good number of tourists too. Paul, who learned his skills in the Merchant Navy, then honed them when he and Debbie had a pub in the UK. Their customers are not all British. It transpires that their traditional menu is attractive to the Scandinavian community too, and whilst chatting with Spanish customers they often find they have previously experienced Fish and Chips in the UK, and come to Our Plaice in the Sun to remind themselves of what makes them so special. Others come in with English friends or partners and are being introduced to the delights of Fish and Chips for the first time. Not all of their customers eat in, of course, and the takeaway side of the busi-

ness is doing well too. Many of their customers phone their order through before making their way along to collect them. Although they have a liquor licence and sell cans, they don’t do draught beer. This presents no problem though, as the bar next door is happy to oblige, or indeed let you eat your Fish and Chips at one of their tables if you wish. Maybe you’ll want to watch football in there too - no problem. Talking of drinks, their loyalty card scheme means that with every 10th meal you get a bottle of cava. They have recently introduced a new lunchtime special menu, available Mondays to Thursdays between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, which offers two courses - homemade starter and main, or main and homemade dessert - for €7.95, including a drink. The main course consists of cod, chips and peas. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 1pm to 10pm. Careline team effort CARELINE THEATRE’S latest production is a chance to show off the 3,000 costumes, hats and accessories managed by their talented wardrobe mistress, Janet Walker. Entitled ‘After A Fashion,’ this show provides a wide variety of entertainment through song, dance and laughter. There are pirates with cutlasses and pistols, an Egyptian mummy, new ver-

sions of classic songs, audience participation and even Elvis will be in the building! Understand your new plot of land before you start planting THIRTEEN things for you to look out for are listed in this week’s article Dick Handscombe

IF you have moved into a new property and had some preEaster rain, April is the time to

take steps to understand the plot before you plan. Thirteen things to look for are listed below. 1. Location of underground services Find out where electricity cables, water pipes and sewage pipes run and the location of the septic tank.

2. The variations in the depth of soil By digging holes determine the depth of the top soil in various parts of the land. 3. The quality of the soil Is it sandy, rocky, full of builder’s rubble or rich fibrous agricultural soil? Is it free draining or was it waterlogged? Did the builder kindly leave you the original top soil? 4. Previous uses If not obvious ask around to find out what the land was used for and how long ago. 5. Location of large rocks under the surface of the soil If rocks are visible try and determine how large they are. Bash an iron rod into the soil to try and find others. 6. Location and dimensions of the builders rubble tip Maybe your land is free of rubble but if your house is at the end of a new street you may have rubble from other houses. 7. Pollution by painters Painters vary in how careful they are in tipping waste paints, and if concentrated in one or two places it is likely many plants will not thrive.

GARDEN: Understand your plot before you make a plan.

8. The spread of mature tree roots The roots may run for many metres sideways from the trunk and only shallowly under the surface of the soil. You may need to remove some or not build terraces over them as the growing roots could crack. 9. Location of rotting stumps and roots With luck the tops are still visible or under rocks placed on top of the stumps. Others may turn up when you dig holes or

bang steel rods into the ground. 10. Heavily consolidated areas If you have areas that were previously heavily-used paths you will notice they are bare. It is difficult to recover such areas so use as pathways or bury under terraces. 11. Where rainfall runs After recent heavy rain this is probably still visible. If not go out and have a look next time it rains heavily. 12. Where the rain water

causes floods Watch out for low points which have obviously flooded. 13. Where the cement mixer stood Is there an area of rough cement that will need to be terraced over? Making detergent NO need for store-bought brands SO you want your clothes to be smelling fresh and clean but you don’t want to waste money on store-bought detergent? Or perhaps you’re wary of the chemicals that come along with store-bought brands? Well you’re in luck, because making your own detergent is a piece of cake. First, grab a bar of soap. Using a cheese grater or food processor, grate the soap and then put it into a pan with a litre or two of water and heat it, stirring until the soap has dissolved in the water. Put 15-20 litres of piping hot water in a big bucket. Add one cup of borax and a cup of washing soda, and stir well. Then add the mixture from the pan and give it another whirl. Cover the bucket and let it sit for the night and then pry it open and have a look. It may need to be shaken or stirred until the consistency is correct. Then you’ll have detergent for weeks and months to come! Use half a cup to a cup depending on the size of the laundry load.

though there remain concerns over the expense of mass production. Needless to say now that the hydrogen wars have begun, scientists at respective manufacturers will be quickly fighting to improve efficiency and costs. Launched at the New York Motor Show, the Honda FCV Clarity will be available in the States and Japan this spring and grace European showrooms sometime over summer. It is expected to cost in the region of €50,000.

Stats don’t figure A MATHEMATICAL anomaly is causing a stir among Albir Vets fans and players alike, and it all stems from a rudimentary graph in the club’s very early days. As you would expect, the model was produced on the back of a cigarette packet in one of the town’s bars. The Y-axis related to the precise number of players who enjoyed a certain skill level while the X-axis recorded those skills themselves. The skills ranged from Complete Dud (CD), Aspiring Dud (AD), Trier (T), Has Potential (HP) and Useful (U). This original construct provided the expected bell curve that can be explained to the non-mathematical by a simple analogy. Imagine the famous cartoon character, Homer Simpson, lying flat on his back and use the line from his chest through the copious curve of his belly until the top of his legs. The resultant line more or less depicts the bell curve and the Vetnerds named their results

the Homer Belly Curve. The recent surprise resulted when those same bar room boffins produced an updated graph based on the same criteria, but after six games. The new data showed that the ‘belly’ part of the curve had moved towards the right hand/more skilful side. This phenomenon was explained through the increased gym attendance of the squad and also to the efforts of the club’s fitness guru, Steve Nash. Unfortunately, the graph was toppled on its side and revealed that the ‘belly’ had dropped and appeared more paunch like. The statisticians are working on an explanation. St Patrick’s Medal ON Friday April 1 a full house of 40 members played a medal competition at Oliva Nova for the St Patrick’s Day Trophy, kindly sponsored by John and Mary Feek. The course was in excellent condition, in particular the fairways which had been cut the day before and were like walking on carpets, all credit to the hard working green staff. On to the main prizes, and in first place with an excellent nett 69 off 20, and winner of the St Patrck’s day Trophy, was Brian Baybut. Ros Fletcher took second place with a nett 70 off 9.4, pushing John Day (12.6) in to third place on countback. Sponsor John Feek was forth with a nett 72 off 16.7, with a further three players all matching par. Mick Farmer (11.8) was fifth, Brian Redfearn (13.3) sixth, and Celia Cronin (12.4) seventh, all decided on countback. Next event is on Friday April 15.
