By Adele Land Once again Mojacar has excelled itself with the beautiful village recording the busiest Semana Santa holiday period for quite some time. Tourist industry insiders revealed that the trade had done spectacularly well courtesy of a variety of well publicised appearances of the pueblo across British television, Spanish guidebooks, and the sterling work of the provincial government at popular trade fairs across Europe. High temperatures and a four-day weekend also did their

part to bring visitors flocking to the town to soak up the sun and enjoy the first break of the year. In order to cater for the large number of visitors, the thoughtful Mojacar council added extra bus services along the beachfront and to the old village. A recent campaign also saw the council request that property owners in the pueblo paint their houses to ensure visitors have the best impression of the town. Mayor, Rosa Maria Cano, said the positive visitor numbers were largely due to the powerful conviction and dedi-

cated effort from officials in helping promote Mojacar throughout the continent as part of a hugely successful campaign. The independent tourism sector fared extremely well during the holiday. Wendy Lester, of rental agency, Blue Sea Villas, told Euro Weekly News: “It has been a really busy Easter with bookings from the UK and Spain, I have noticed a big improvement on previous years.” Lester attributed the success to the good weather and the raised profile of Mojacar with UK television programmes, in-

cluding A Place in the Sun, featuring the town frequently. Visitors from Spain and other parts of Europe made up the key visitor tally, with the average guest spending roughly five beautiful nights in the village. In the week running up to the Easter holiday, the large hotels reported 88 per cent occupancy booked with predictions for that to climb to 95 per cent with last-minute reservations. Mojacar hotels together have some 8,000 beds registered for the spring season with stock increasing as smaller hotels open for the summer months.

Respect for Brussels across the province TOWNS across the province joined in solidarity with the Belgian city of Brussels following the recent terrorist attacks. Moments of silence were held at various town halls and council

offices including Cuevas del Almanzora and Huercal-Overa. More than 30 people died and hundreds were injured during the attacks at an airport and metro station in the city.

Workplace injury A FACTORY worker in Cantoria was rushed to hospital following a serious accident at work. The man is said to have severely damaged his hand

while using machinery as part of his job. The 47-year-old was taken to La Inmaculada hospital in nearby HuercalOvera.

It’s a one way street MOJACAR Council has advised that some roads in the beach area of Mojacar have been restricted to one-way traffic. The affected roads are Calle Torre Bahia and Calle Romance. Both are located in a busy area of the resort and the changes were made to alleviate traffic congestion in the summer months.

Revving up their engines in Almeria COMPETITION consists of six races at different locations in the province By Sam Croft THE Second Motocross Championship of Almeria is set to kick off this week. The competition, MX Almeria, will consist of six races which will take place in different locations in the province, more specifically Zurgena, Berja, Roquetas de Mar, Gador, Tabernas and Nijar. The first leg will begin in Zurgena on April 3. In its first edition last year, MX Almeria had a high turnout, with almost 100 people participating in each of the different races, and organisers hope that this year they can take this interest even further to bring the sport one step closer to the general public. Juan Alvarez, President of the Andalucian Motorcycling Federation, emphasised that “this championship was a revelation in Andalucia last year. We hope that we manage to reach the level of those in Cordoba or Sevilla very soon.”

By Emily Chettle CERTAIN beaches in the Cabo de Gata will have restricted vehicle access over the summer, according to the new regulations set by the Junta de Andalucia regional government. On Monday March 28 new rules were published by the Territorial Delegation of Agriculture, Fishing and Environment of the Junta in Almeria, restricting access to the beaches inside the Cabo de Gata Natural Park located to the west of the district of San Jose, in Nijar, between the dates of June 18 and September 18. In order to preserve the area of ‘high ecological and natural value’, access will now be limited to the beaches located between Genoveses and Cala Carbon, including Monsul beach.

scape was being damaged and degraded. The Junta also points out that the vehicles could be a safety hazard, and that the area does

not have the proper medical, safety, or health services to the huge number of vehicles and people that are generated during the summer season.

Almeria’s export figures rocket ahead IMPORTS in the same period decreased By Emily Chettle ALMERIA is storming ahead in its exportation figures resisting the national trend and is the leading region in Andalucia in terms of trade. Figures from the Spanish Exterior Trade Institute (ICEX) confirm that the trade coverage rate of Almeria is 207.7 which means that Almeria sells abroad over double the amount it

buys from other countries. It is the best rate in Andalucia followed by Cordoba at 204 per cent. The new figures also prove encouraging reading in terms of capital being raised by sales to foreign countries with January alone seeing a whopping €381.4 million which is a 3.7 per cent raise on last year. Imports in the same period amounted to €183.7 million, a 1.7 per cent decrease

comparing to last year which holds Almeria in great financial stead when looking at the balance sheets. The only two regions in Andalucia with a negative commercial balance are Cadiz and Huelva. Almeria certainly bucks the trend when comparing the figures on a national level as Spain, in fact, has a huge negative balance of -€2.386.6 million.

Jail wanted for alleged sex offender THE Public Prosecutor has asked for 12 years in prison for an octogenarian accused of offering two minors money in exchange for sexual relations. The accused, 87, could also face probation and a restraining order if the prosecution is successful. The incident apparently occurred in a park

in the Levante area of Almeria. The man allegedly offered two 12-year-olds €20 each in exchange for a sexual practice. One of them apparently agreed while the other refused. The prosecutor has also demanded that the man pay compensation of €3,000 to the youth who accepted, and €1,500 to the other child for moral damages.

Former mayor of Mojacar dies GABRIEL FLORES has died after long illness By Adele Land RESIDENTS of Mojacar were saddened to hear over the weekend, of the death of Gabriel Flores Morales, former mayor and a long-time political figure in the town. Flores passed away aged 67, following a long illness which forced him to step down from local politics following the municipal elections last year. For many in the political world, he will be remembered for his tenure as number two of the opposition group Union Mojaquera, during which he worked with then party leader Diego Garcia and was passionately outspoken during plenary meetings, while maintaining a

calm and respectful demeanour. Flores, previously of the socialist PSOE party, famously refused to step down as Mojacar mayor in 2006 despite having made a pact after the 2003 municipal elections to share the leadership with the Partido Popular’s (PP’s) Rosa Maria Cano. In a complicated election, the PP gained the majority of votes and won four council seats, enough to take the leadership, but the formation of a coalition between a number of smaller parties forced the decision to share the leadership, two years each. Flores was also a much-respected school teacher in Mojacar and a number of former

students took to social media to pay tribute him. One former pupil wrote “I classed him as a friend and a guardian and always looked up to him”. Union Mojaquera’s current leader, Lucas Mayo, shared the political stage with Flores and told the Euro Weekly News: “Don Gabriel was a teacher both inside and outside of the classroom, he taught me lot and I cared for and respected him greatly.” Mayo added that Flores would be greatly missed, both as a friend and as an important figure in Mojacar. Family members, friends and colleagues turned out for the funeral which was held in Mojacar earlier this week.

Dames in Spain enjoy flamenco afternoon THE Dames in Spain ladies group, based in Mojacar, enjoyed an interesting afternoon this week, with a talk from Francesca Girone, a local British flamenco dancer. Francesca hosted a question and answer session which was very interesting and informative. The presentation explained the works and history of flamenco and how she became involved with this energetic dance. She captivated the Dames with the history of this art form, native to the Spanish region of Andalucia and everyone enjoyed her story. The ladies, whose group celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2015, commented that Francesca was both beautiful and passionate about her dancing.

Almeria student injured in Brussels terrorist attack A YOUNG woman from Almeria Province was one of the many people injured in the Brussels terrorist attacks of March 22. Silvia Molina, 25, is a student who is currently doing a Master’s Degree in Science and Technology of Information and Commu-

nication in the Belgian capital. The mayor of Roquetas de Mar, Gabriel Amat, has been in touch with the girl’s family, and reported that she is in a serious condition, with various burns and damage to her hearing.

More than 80 walk for MACS cancer charity WALKERS rewarded with hot food and great entertainment LAST week, more than 80 walkers met at bar Tasca in Lubrin, the pretty inland town on the eastern edge of the Sierra Filabres. The early morning chill in the wind did not dampen spirits as walkers from a variety of nationalities, set out on the 12 kilometre or five kilometre trek in aid of MACS cancer support charity. Following the challenge, hot food awaited the walkers, which was enjoyed while listening to a local group of musicians. Pete Thompson and members of the band, Pulse, ensured that the day went with a swing. Sincere thanks go to Amador for opening bar Tasca early for pre-walk refreshments, to Lubrin Mayor Domingo Ramos, for providing the necessary accesses and permissions, and to Ana from the tourist office for help and support throughout. Campaign to prevent drug use launched in schools FOR the fourth consecutive year, a campaign has been l aunched by t he Almeria Provincial Counci l wi t h t he ai m of deterring youths from slipping into the world of drugs. The initiative has been spearheaded by the Drug Dependencies and Addictions Service of the council, and will steadily drum up support for its cause over the next few months as a precursor for International Day Against Inappropriate Use and Illegal Trafficking of Drugs, which is observed on June 26. teenagers, and encourages educational centres from al l over t he pr ovi nce t o participate. Numerous workshops have been set up t o educate the youths about prevention and awareness of drug-related issues by t ouchi ng upon such i m por t ant t opi cs as dr ug dependenci es and addictions, types of substances, risk factors, and m yt hs and st er eotypes. Park looking pristine NEW play features have been set up By Sam Croft SOME much-needed maintenance and improvement work has taken place in the Los Guiraos neighbourhood of Cuevas del Almanzora. Specifically, the sports area and children’s park in this neighbourhood are looking fresh and up to date.

In regards to the sports area, the work has revolved around the fence surrounding the perimeter of a chunk of land containing a football pitch and a green space. Posts, nets, and an access gate have been installed. As for the children’s park, kerbs have been set up to demarcate the different sections,

and new concrete has been laid down. Also the new play features have been set up for the children. After the work was completed, Cuevas Mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria and Los Guiraos Mayor Antonia Perez stopped by the park to have a look at the new and improved facilities.

MORE than €2.6 million has been spent on development and the expansion of utilising natural gas as an energy supply in Almeria Province in 2015. Improvements to infrastructure, services and the networks were all part of the works. Natural Gas Andalucia incorporated almost 1,000 new supply points across its distribution networks in Almeria during the last year, meaning that close to 12,000 Almerian inhabitants now can enjoy the advantages of this resource which provides reliable and cost efficient energy to residents. Natural Gas Andalucia closed 2015 with a network of 170 kilometres of natural gas pipes.

Hospital channel Flights called off after terrorist attacks for sick children in Brussels cause chaos to travel plans PROGRAMMES designed to help By Emily Chettle A NEW channel aimed specifically at sick children is to be installed in rooms at the Hospital de La Inmaculada in HuercalOvera. Fan3 of Atresmedia is a TV channel specifically designed for hospitalised children to bring entertainment as well as information on the distressing procedures they are facing. The initiative, created by the Artesmedia Foundation, hopes that through cartoons, a TV series as

well as specially created pieces by the foundation it can help children understand and familiarise themselves with their illness and the hospital environment in a friendly and pleasant way. The channel is supervised by the Spanish Paediatrics Assocation and the Official School of Psychologists. Fan3 broadcasts from Monday to Sunday,is free for the users and has no advertising. It is currently in more than 100 hospitals throughout Spain.

Design competition winner announced THE winner of the logo design competition in Cuevas del Almanzora has been announced. The competition was held to find a logo for the new municipal women’s centre in the town. Victor Gomez, a young man resident in the town was revealed as the winner and received €100 in prize money. Mayor Antonio Liria presented the prize and congratulated Gomez on the win.

THE Almeria airport was one of many affected by the terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22. In the aftermath of the attacks, Za-

ventem airport in the Belgian capital was forced to shut down, causing various flights to be diverted or cancelled. Two such flights were scheduled to

take place on March 27 in Almeria. Ultimately one of them was able to make its way to another airport, and the second flight had to be cancelled.

Dead dolphin found on Mojacar beach WALKERS discovered the mammal in a cove

STRIPED DOLPHIN: Post-mortem revealed internal parasites. By Adele Land A GROUP of walkers reported finding a dead dolphin washed up on a beach in Mojacar last week. The animal was spotted in a cove near to Playa Macenas at the foot of the clifftop path near the Puerto Marina complex. Volunteers from marine-rescue group Equinac were dispatched to the scene where the animal was measured and photographed. The dolphin was found to be a striped dol-

phin measuring around two metres in length. A post-mortem examination was performed on the animal which revealed a high level of internal parasites. Equinac co-ordinators thanked the volunteers who attended the scene and the walkers who called 112, which is the action to take if a marine animal is found in distress or deceased. Equinac is a non-profit organisation with volunteers on call 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Pottery pamphlet AN edited guide to handiwork has been released in Nijar to help visitors discover the timetables of and directions to various points of interest in the province related to crafts. The pamphlet was issued by the Tourism, Historical Heritage and Beach Council which hopes to help readers relive the experience of traditional workers including potters and engravers. Nijar is intimately linked with craftsmanship, especially ceramics, which in contemporary times is a hobby and decorative art, but was previously an indispensable part of domestic life. Tourism officials have emphasised that they want guests to appreciate the intricate traditions that make Nijar distinct.

A year out is popular for Almeria students TAKING a year out is becoming a common tendency among university students and Almeria is not bucking the trend. The numbers of students opting for a further year to study abroad has almost doubled. Due to limited career and employment opportunities students feel that opting for a further year to study abroad can only be of benefit. Once thought of as exclusively for wealthy youths, it is becoming more accessible for large numbers of students as many work whilst away to fund their travels. It seems that English speaking countries are popular with Spanish students, including those in Almeria. Countries such as the UK, America and Australia are at the top of the charts and even Malta is proving popular. Manuel Fernandez, Secondary School English teacher, underlines the advantages of linguistic immersion. He says that “for students to be in a foreign country means a process in which the learning is permanent. 24 hours a day they are soaking up the language, even during more routine activities.”

Considered the first mass exodus in modern history, more than 100,000 people escaped from Malaga to Almeria during the Civil War, along the coastal road, but many of them were killed along the way. Norman Bethune was pivotal in helping the refugees, especially focusing on children and

transporting them in a rudimentary ambulance van where he created the first mobile blood transfusion service. The show can be seen from April 1 until April 29, and features a total of 44 photos divided into three parts: a biography about him, his time in Spain, and finally his time in China, where he died in 1939.

New York artist in Mojacar THE Mojacar art scene had a boost this week as wellknown artist Michel Koven opened his exhibition in the Mojacar Factory Art gallery. The New Yorker exhibited in Mojacar back in the 1970s and is back with his work, entitled, ‘Myths and Fotomitos.’ Koven recently exhibited in Madrid and his work is said to take the viewer on a ‘literary journey through art.’ Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano attended the inauguration of the exhibition which will be open until the end of this week.

Put up a parking lot for the tourist season AREA around the Pueblo Indalo has always been problematic By Adele Land MOJACAR Council said it is committed to resolving any parking issues during the busy tourist season. Some 200 new spaces were created during the run up to the Easter weekend to address the reduction in spaces caused by the ongoing work on the new paseo maritimo. Plots of land behind the Mojacar Beach aparthotel were cleared and marked for parking and signage erected to direct visitors to the new spaces. Following meetings between Mayor Rosa Maria Cano and the director of the Best Hotels group, some 130 spaces were made available at the Pueblo Indalo apartment complex, with a view, subject to licensing, for this to be increased to 350 by summer 2017. The area around the Pueblo Indalo has always been problematic and many nearby residents had expressed concern on how the construction of the paseo would

Elderly woman dies in Almeria house fire A FIRE that ripped through a private residence in Almeria City ended tragically with the death of an elderly lady according to a representative from Emergency services 112. At 2.57pm numerous residents contacted the emergency services number 112 alerting them to the presence of a fire in a two-storey house located at Number 5, Calle Almedina. Officers from the National and Local Police, firefighters and health workers went to the dwelling where sadly they discovered the body of an elderly lady. Investigations into the cause of the blaze are underway as the fire is reported to have been significant in size.

Alleged Access tunnel opens paint vandal MAN arrested By Adele Land A MAN has been arrested in Garrucha in connection with acts of vandalism against buildings, cars and homes of members of the religious brotherhood. The 33-year-old is accused of throwing paint over cars and against the walls of buildings belonging to the brethren. In addition to the above acts, the man allegedly sealed up the locks of doors at the buildings with silicone. The man was arrested following an investigation lasting a number of weeks, during which some â‚Ź4,000 of damage was caused. He will appear in court in Vera.

THE new access tunnel to Garrucha port finally opened this week. After some delays, traffic was able to utilise the underpass within hours of it being completed. It is hoped the tunnel will take the heavy traffic away from residential areas. Hundreds of lorries per day arrive and depart from the port carrying building products from the nearby Sorbas cement quarries.

A RECENT touristic evaluation of Almeria Province turned up some potentially

surprising results for an area often famed for its coastal beauty.

The touris tic s urve y, which was conducted throughout Andalucia, questioned tourists who visited the province during the last quarter of 2015. Somewhat unusually, the beaches were ranked lowest out of all criteria, scoring a rather paltry 7.1 out of a total score of 10. Fortunately, many other areas fared better. Overall the province scored high for its communications (8.7), cleanliness (8.5), natural pa rks (8.5), a nd ra tio of price to quality (8.5). O n the othe r e nd of the scale, along with the beaches, were train and taxi transport, with 7.3 and 7.5 respectively. O ve ra ll, the provinc e scored a fairly respectable 8.1 out of 10 when all of the ranking criteria was pooled together by the creators of the survey.

Nijar curbs the caravan total RESIDENTS frustrated by lack of parking By Emily Chettle LOVE them or loathe them campervans are increasing in popularity and across Almeria this certainly seems to be true. In a reaction to the spiralling numbers of portable holiday homes, numbers of caravans and campervans are to be controlled along the coastal regions by Nijar Town Council. This news follows a huge jam consisting of 200 caravans over the Easter period. The Tourism, Culture, Heritage and Beach Councillor of Nijar, Alexis Pineda, has indicated that the council has planned to set out measures to limit large touring vehicles along the coastal areas in spaces where they are not permitted, outside

campsites and reserved areas. Pineda explained that the presence of numerous caravans and campervans was noticeable all week but the number was especially high as of Thursday March 24. There were 60 caravans registered in Aguamarga, 40 in Isleta del Moro, another 60 in San Jose and 30 or 40 in the area of Las Negras. Pineda commented that the increase of this type of vehicle has been “considerable”, and that it has ended up frustrating many residents because of limited parking. He went on to say that the Local Police have issued a lot of fines to these vehicles. The council intends to revise the bylaw regulating roads and car parks of the beaches,and to create overnight service at local campsites.

Subsidised personal alarms SERVICE is available for holders of the Andalucia 65 card By Adele Land AGE Support Almanzora has reminded elderly and

v u ln era b le p e o p le in t he community of the benefits of the Andalucia 65 card. The group, based in Ar-

boleas is keen to ensure pensioners in the area are equipped with the knowledge they need to make life

easier. Volunteer Liz Carey has put together a number of useful fact sheets with information on handy hints and tips. The card gives access to services and discounts in many ways. The card, known as the ‘sesenta y cinco’ (65) card is available to residents over the age of 65 living in any town in Andalucia. This week, Carey provided information on the telecare personal alarm service.

There are a number of different types of telecare sensors and alarms provided by private companies, councils or charities including the Red Cross. One of the simplest types is a personal alarm consisting of a button on a pendant worn round the neck, with a base unit that works with a landline. In Andalucia the largest provider is the Andalucian Telecare Service with about 270,000 users.

This service is partially funded by the social welfare department with users paying monthly towards the cost. This telecare system is a personal monitoring system providing support in cases of need. The calls are received at one of two headquarters where the person requiring attention is identified. The cost for the service is a maximum of €10.80 per month for holders of the Andalucian 65 card and is free for those over 80 or with the Andalucian Gold card. The service is provided in Spanish but emergency calls can be diverted to English speakers. Telecare can be contacted on 902 506 565, by written application via your town hall or by downloading the application form on the Junta de Andalucia website. Failed country club finance row MAYOR has slammed the former council By Adele Land HUERCAL-OVERA Mayor, Domingo Fernandez, has slammed the former PSOE council for “costing the town and its residents more than half a million euros.” According to Fernandez, the town is responsible for paying back the monies to the compa-

ny of a failed golf and country club development dating back to 2004. The Ballabona Golf and Country Club was planned to be constructed in the area by the Ballabona Hotel near the A7 motorway, but the planning application never reached the final stages. The money, originally paid to the then PSOE

council, must be returned. The PSOE hit back at the accusations saying the PP council should have taken responsibility of negotiating with the Junta de Andalucia to get the project off the ground. The group added that the finished project could have been worth some six million euros to the town.

Moroccan tomatoes are on the increase ONE of the largest Spanish agricultural companies will move some of its production to Morocco to take advantage of lower labour costs. Murgiverde, which is based in Almeria, has argued that many vegetables are being harvested in inconsequential amounts and that, as tomato growing requires many workers, it makes economic sense to set sail for Africa. The question of new import entry prices has also increased Moroccan exports to Spain, meaning much greater competition for Spanish tomato growing companies. There is also the looming concern of drought with Almeria no longer displaying the tomato growing potential of yesteryear. Morocco now has far greater water stability and more arable land, despite being cushioned by the vast

Sahara desert. In fact the North-African nation is one of the world’s

largest tomato exporters, distributing more than 400,000 tonnes annually.

The €3 million project will include the construction of a new annexe and the redistribution of space in the existing building. The new space will house three new classrooms, a communal space, administration offices and three workshops. A new sports area will be included and the fence around the property replaced. The existing parts of the school will also undergo some cosmetic improvements. The enlargement of the school is expected to create up to 80 new jobs.

Almeria academy’s new app set to revolutionise teaching methods AN English academy in Almeria City has become the first educational centre in the province which com-

municates with the parents of its students through a pioneering application for mobile phones, called Flup.

With this app, family members of the students from the Oxford Indalica School of English can use their smartphones to find out when the student has missed a class, how they are progressing with the language, or which day they have an exam. Also, they receive the students’ final grades directly through the app, by means of a notification similar to a WhatsApp message. At the moment, 50 par-

ents, students, and teachers have already downloaded the app, and for months they have been using the new system as a pilot test. Until the end of this academic course, Flup will be installed progressively until it reaches approximately a thousand users in the 20162017 course. The Director of the academy, Daniel Ramos Bal, says that Flup has completely revolutionised the way of teaching in the centre.

New role for Mojacar police DUTIES transferred from Guardia Civil By Adele Land LOCAL POLICE in Mojacar took on a new role over the Easter period as part of a campaign for the use of seatbelts in vehicles. As part of a national campaign, the Mojacar team monitored vehicles throughout the

town over the long weekend. The task was formerly undertaken by the Guardia Civil but following changes overseen by the Director General of Traffic, this and other traffic-related responsibilities were transferred to the Local Police force. Tourism councillor Em-

manuel Aguero said he had great confidence in the ability of the Local Police to carry out this role. During the busy Easter period the police team was expanded in order to cope with the large influx of visitors, as is the case during the summer season.

SEMANA SANTA is one of, if not the most popular religious holidays in Spain, with huge crowds lining the streets to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. It also proved a busy time for Almeriaâ€™s emergency services with a total of 1,026 emergencies recorded. However when compared with the rest of Andalucia it paled in comparison to the number of call-outs with the third-least accumulated calls/notifications of the 13,912 that took place in all of Andalucia. The majority of the incidents took place on Saturday, March 26, when there were 127 co-ordinated occurrences. The busiest time of day was between 12pm and 1am where there were a total of 89 emergencies on average. Types of incident included 430 medical emergencies,

206 for citizen safety and 95 for traffic related offences. Almeria was sixth in terms of number of emergencies in

Andalucia. Sevilla had the most, with 3,913, followed by Malaga 2,601 and then Granada with 1,894.

Easter music round-up THE Easter weekend in the Levante was filled with music, as bands and singers from all genres took to the stages of bars around the area. Kicking off the weekend on Friday was a selection of live music outside in the square in Palomares and the Pedro Clemente Jazz Quartet at Dolce Vita in Mojacar. Saturday saw the popular Ashley and Danius play The Emerald Isle, Chris Pottle on guitar at El Keys in Turre and more music at Tito’s and Joe Beach. Residents and visitors of Camping Los Gallardos were treated to some good old rock and roll with the Day Trippers at bar Miraflores. Diners at the Hostal Rural in Turre took a trip down memory lane with singer Kay Frances and The Cops had everyone under arrest with a triple bill over the three days with a tribute to The Police. On Sunday a new band took to the stage at La Cava, as Stiff Upper Lip performed together for the first time with a great set of music from Bowie to Paul Weller and a whole lot more in between. Rounding off the weekend were The Streeters at Dolce Vita, one the area’s most popular bands, with tunes from U2, Coldplay and other well known artists. In a recent ceremony, Deputy Mayor Manuel Cabrera was pla c e d i n charge of unvei l i ng t he names of the different streets. The streets are named after important people who have contributed to the cultural and social identity of Calpe over the years, including the Parish Priest Francisco Bernabe, the writer Pablo Pineda, and the architect Ricardo Bofill. The Calpe Municipal Music Band also now has a street in their honour, and they were indeed present at the ceremony to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Since then the chain, which at one time was the largest retailer of light fittings in the UK, has continued to struggle and its investors have had to ask creditors to agree to reduce the rental costs of its 164 stores, which was agreed in principle for a number of them. YUM BRANDS: Owner of fast food chains to sell 20 per cent stake.

Group to sell large stake in its Chinese business AMERICAN owner of a range of fast food chains including KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, the appropriately named Yum Brands, is in talks with various financial institutions about selling a significant stake in its Chinese business. It was only six months ago that the company which had previously been part of PepsiCo, announced that it intended to incorporate its operation in China and to have it quoted on the Chinese stock exchange. The total company has a market value estimated at $32 billion (€29 billion), but

it is reported that it is in discussions to sell 20 per cent of the Chinese business, once devolved, for as much as $10 billion (€9 billion), even though sales have dipped recently due to the downturn in the Chinese economy and a scandal over some of the meat used by the group. Despite these problems, shares in the parent have gone up in value due to this speculation and a Yum spokesman is reported to have said: “We continue to make good progress since we announced the transaction separating Yum and Yum China.”

Brexit finances continue to confuse CONFLICTING opinions from so-called experts are hitting the news AS the war of words over the Brexit begins to hot up, conflicting opinions from so-called experts are hitting the news on an almost daily basis. Recent contributors include the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and credit agency Moody’s, with one saying that the Brexit would be a financial disaster and the other being of the opinion that it wouldn’t make a huge amount of difference to the economy. The CBI commissioned a report from hugely influential financial analysts PwC (Price Waterhouse Coopers), which says the Brexit will cost the United Kingdom €130 billion and up to one million jobs. General Director of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn endorsed the findings of the report which effectively saw no financial benefits to the UK, apart from the cancellation of its payments to Brussels, and this would be off-

CH2M will work with Spanish company SENER and Atkins to provide programme and construction management support, and engineering services. It is intended that the American firm will provide programme management services, SENER will provide expertise on high-speed rail, while Atkins will provide engineering services as part of the contract. The group hopes it will obtain additional work when future contracts are put out to tender as the overall cost of the project is expected to run into many billions of euros.

UK sugar tax IN theory the decision announced in the budget to add a tax onto soft drinks with high sugar contents was a brave one, but the government may find itself ‘holding a tiger by the tail’, as various groups consider whether they will take action to try and change this decision. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is overjoyed by the news, but others have criticised the chancellor for not making the tax cover a wider range of fast foods and chocolates which also contribute to childhood obesity. On the other hand, UK representatives of the beverage industry are considering their position, as although they have until 2018 to either reduce the sugar content of the drinks or see the tax imposed, they may decide to take the UK government to Brussels as they consider the imposition of this two tier tax to be unreasonable. With the weight of some of the biggest corporations in the world such as Coca Cola behind them, and having seen Finland being forced to reverse a tax on ice cream, financial interest may conquer the search for a healthy future.

My personal contribution was, ‘underrated.’ I am delighted that today, my observation is proven to be utterly correct. Why? Simply because we are on the brink of allout war! I have no idea how this man would handle the American economy, civil rights, or indeed most any other American malady. In fact he may be a disaster, but in a war, he’s the man I want on my side. Churchill was a useless peacetime prime minister, but as a combat leader he was ruthless, stubborn, and arrogantly dedicated to victory at almost any cost.

People with money to invest sit on the side lines, waiting until they feel confident that prices are back on an upward path. However, when markets are lowest, the point of ‘despondency’ is also the ‘point of maximum financial opportunity’. Although stockmarket volatility can be uncomfortable, it can bring value back to the markets and create opportunities. If you have capital to invest, share prices falling can be a good time to buy. You can potentially buy more shares with

your money; shares that will rise in price once the downturn ends. If you are still concerned the market may fall further - even though it could instead rise - you could apply the principle of ‘pound cost averaging’ (or euro or dollar), where spread out entering the market over time. The principle notes that if you invest, say, a third of your money on one date, a third two months later and the balance two months after that, the average of your investment will provide comfort that you are not unduly exposed to the risk of the market falling the day after you buy and a better opportunity having arisen. As history shows, markets always recover eventually. Declines over the last five decades have been followed by upturns, which on average have been longer lasting and with gains larger than the losses preceding them. What we cannot know in a downturn is when markets will hit the bottom. If you keep waiting you will probably miss the upswing, often

when price increases are sharpest. Do not risk waiting too long. Make your investment but be prepared for further short-term volatility and to hold your investment for the longer-term. We do not generally advocate ‘timing the markets’ - it is ‘time in the market’ that counts however this does not mean that those with capital to invest should ignore the opportunities presented by falling markets. If you are invested for the longterm your portfolio should ride out temporary market volatility. MOJACAR village can easily date its existence back some 3,000+ years yet the changes that are occurring now in the last three years are putting a glowing finishing and imaginative touch across the ancient veil. Yes, it’s an art form to have the vision to convert the ancient and acceptable from being a ruin and not giving it too much shine or glitter. From the top of the ancient castle in the village to the bottom of the beach where the sea laps at the sands, all is getting cleaned, new walk ways, parking and floral arrangements are sprouting up giving once dilapidated Mojacar a clean and fresh look. What once was forlorn adobe ruins has been spruced up, often with a bristling white glow full of charm and grace. The transformation is taking place right now before our eyes, in the pueblo and on the beach. Take plenty

being wiped clean in exchange for a ‘white village of Spain’ look. Foreign newspapers like England’s the Guardian have picked up on the trend and many more will soon follow. Many national surveys already rank Mojacar as one of the top 20 MUST places to visit if you want to return to wherever and say you’ve been to Spain. The bars too should be quieting down with the Local Police now on the nightly guard for those over indulging or nuisance makers. The whole territory is reverting back toward the fiefdom it once was. No longer can you blatantly throw off reckless words blaming the town hall for all problems that exist when in truth that very same town hall has made the charge forward. Shall it all be called the New Mojacar? In any case the village and beach have opened their arms inviting new travellers, tourists and passersby to inspect, stay and enjoy, our corner of enchantment. As the Indalo law always repeats itself, you’ll be back with many more friends and that’s what we like.

I HAVE just returned from two rather chilly but nevertheless satisfying weeks in the Mother Country. The focus of my visit was to meet up with my five grandsons who I had not seen for some considerable time and with my daughter who, on reflection, should carry the married name of Fry. This remark will only have significance for people of a certain vintage who remember a particular chocolate bar manufactured in Bristol. Each of the boys has a different work schedule, so our get-togethers were spread over more than a week, but at least this meant that instead of one large gathering, we could take our time to catch up and generally enjoy each

Two days later, the same gentleman was in attendance behind another glass of beer with the same unnerving stare levelled in my direction. But again, on the arrival of my second grandson, he was soon forgotten amid much hugging and joyful acknowledgements of each other ’s presence. It was with a certain amount of reluctance that I entered the establishment another two days on, but there he was again with the same unsmiling and, I now detected, more hostile stare. “He thinks you are a dirty old man,” my third grandson told me matter of factly. “And we are all rent boys.” I spluttered on my beer. Perhaps it was the mac I was wearing.

IF it’s in Europe it’s far more important than Africa as it is close to home John Smith Random thoughts... I SAW a cartoon on the internet this weekend which showed a map of the World, indicating the scale of interest and worry that we in Europe have with regards to suicide bombs and explosions caused by terrorists around the world and it does seem remarkably accurate. The basic idea is that the closer to home the bomb is then the more worried we are and the more coverage it receives in the international press. The map is entitled ‘Tragic World Map’ and divides the world into five differently coloured areas so that Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA and Western Europe are all the same colour and carry the punch line ‘Oh my God how terrible.’ Next come, India, Israel, Latin America, Mexico, South Africa and

with a swear word which translates as ‘So what.’ If American or European civilians are involved, then any one of the lower ranked areas will increase in prominence for a few days, but then things will quieten down again.

MOTORWAY: Charges rise.

Taking their toll WITH Spain so anxious to attract tourists to the country, it does seem rather strange that the toll roads should be allowed to increase prices during the high tourist season. This means that overseas visitors, as well as the thousands who descend on the Costas from Madrid, suddenly have to pay considerably extra for the privilege of driving on a decent road which was funded in the main by the European Union. A simple journey from Malaga to Estepona normally costs €7.85 but for Semana Santa and the four summer months this shoots up to €12.40, to cover just 80 kilometres at a cost of 15.5 cents per kilometre. If you are travelling further afield then the price goes up as well, and although on their website it is suggested that regular travellers can save up to 50 per cent on their journeys, the truth is that that saving only occurs after you have undertaken 36 journeys and paid by credit or debit card on each occasion. There is also a possibility for regular travellers to ‘freeze’ the price hike provided they undertake 15 journeys a month also paying by card, but not everyone wants to do that and many prefer to pay cash. They used to charge extra in the Christmas period as well but in an anti-scrooge measure, that seems to have been done away with. It does however, beg the question of what the justification is for increasing prices and placing more strain on the other free and often illmaintained roads.

In the same week that I saw this map, we had the dreadful bombing in Brussels which grabbed headlines for days on end, but within a week either side of that there were 65 killed in Lahore, Pakistan when a suicide bomber picked an area in a park near a playground where mainly women and children were killed. In Iraq, another bomb was exploded at a football ceremony with 17 footballers aged between 10 and 16 killed as were another 15 in the crowd. Favourite city for Boko Horan terrorists saw 20 killed by a mosque in Maiduguri which seems to be hit on almost a monthly basis whilst in neighbouring Cameroon, two girls, who may have been kidnapped by that group in Nigeria two years ago were discovered before they could blow themselves up. Cultural loss at Punta Prima

Better off outside HELLO Leapy, I have lived for about 30 years in Belgium and Holland and I understand why the people in the UK think they will be better off outside the EU. One of the reasons is that ever since the UK became members there has been constant criticism in the press and TV. Some of it valid but an awful lot of rubbish and scaremongering. For me the EU is a bit like communism. A good idea ruined by politicians. If they had stuck to being simply a trade organisation it would have been better, but politicians have to get involved which has led to some really stupid ideas, like how vegetables should look. What makes you think that things would be better if the UK leaves the

country for the sake of the expats living in the EU, and that’s including the pensioners in Spain. It would appear that Spain would be worse off

DEAR Editor, Another coastal landmark is to disappear this Friday. The beautiful tower beside the N332 at Punta Prima is to be demolished after standing there so majestically for more than 160 years. It was built from pieces of stone of various shapes and sizes all held together with lime and shingle, long before cement, concrete and blocks but that’s progress, to make way for a new commercial centre which will also take in Cala Mosca. There will be a centre with 180 shops, a bowling alley, a cinema, a medical centre and also stations for police, fire and ambulance – this should please the Orihuela Costa residents. Explosive specialists will place small charges at ground level so that the tower will collapse into a crumpled heap of rubble, which will be hauled away by a fleet of trucks and used for extending the harbour pier in order to accommodate larger ships for carrying salt. The police and proteccion civil will close one lane of the N332 dual carriageway for this work to be carried out. The tower is scheduled to collapse at 11am and the N332 is expected to be back to normal by 1pm. As this has been kept very low profile the police do not anticipate many sightseers.

I DO not believe that the people who are against bull fighting and eat meat are hypocrites. I abhor factory farming and have not eaten meat in 30 years. But many people are ignorant of the horrors and misery suffered by farm animals and others cannot afford organic meat, eggs, etc. I do eat chicken but always try to buy organic. More and more small farmers are producing eggs from ‘happy hens’ - a lovely idea to advertise. Everything has to die and I believe that if farm animals have a good free life and have a quick humane death (and not kept in crates so that their meat is white to please the palate of some uncaring wimp, and geese also have space to walk about and not force fed, sometimes with their feet nailed to the ground so that it cannot move and the greedy farmer can get an ounce more of foie gras), is acceptable to some. Nothing is perfect in this life. We do what we can. As usual, it is all to do with money and power. The difference between the two is the ‘corrida’, bulls are tortured to death, in the name of ‘cultural interest’ and enormous amounts of money are moved around, including subsidies paid by the taxpayer each year, which I have just discovered, and the politician gets his votes while the farm animal is at least to feed people, most times after a short miserable life. EU? When I look at the state the UK is in now with the NHS on its knees, public service, units like firemen, police and nurses pay and conditions being far short of what they should be. These things are not due to the EU but to UK politicians, both parties are guilty. I don’t favour one party over another but I think two of the last lot should be in the tower for treason. Scaremongers HERE we go again scaremongering the expats living in Spain. All the measures George Peretz QC outlines that can be implemented by Spain on the British living in Spain, could be implemented by Britain in the opposite direction against the 900,000 Spaniards currently living in the UK. Let’s be honest the majority living in Spain are pensioners costing Spain nothing, spending their pensions and

paying taxes into the Spanish treasury. As for the health care we all know that unless a pensioner you get nothing out of the Spanish health system unless you have contributed, not so in Britain. According to your newspaper March 17-23, 2016 (issue 1602), Britain pays Spain a whopping €290 million so medical treatment is not given to pensioners free. Whereas the NHS is being constantly abused by millions of EU citizens to the point it is on the verge of collapse. How can we expect Britain to be forced to continue to sacrifice the

If the UK is trading outside of the EU trading zone then the UK government would place tax on all imports from the EU. The EU would in-turn place import tax on all imports from the UK. Import tax is only one of the problems that UK exporters would face. They would have to agree trading agreements with every one of the 27 countries in the EU and 20 countries outside of the EU, a massive job. Also with regard to your comments regarding people that have made their life in Spain. Expats who have made their lives legally in Europe do not need to worry they will be protected by the Vienna Convention of treaties 1969. Please do not take any notice of David Cameron’s comments trying to throw doubt on this treaty, it is just to try and influence your vote and is not true. 40 minutes sleep or more during the day increases risk of metabolic syndrome The findings, which were presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 65th annual scientific session, showed napping for 40 minutes or longer was tied to a steep increase in the risk of being diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. The researchers evaluated data from 21 studies involving 307,237 people. Those people who slept for less than 40 minutes during the day did not show any increased risk for the conditions, but beyond 40 minutes and the risk rose sharply. A siesta for 90 minutes increased metabolic syndrome risk by as much as 50 per cent, as did being excessively tired during the day.

Dear Dr Perez Belmont, After reading your piece on blood pressure I wonder if you can tell me the correct pulse rate, I read on the internet that it should be between 60 and 100. I had a pacemaker fitted in 2013 in England, we come to Spain every winter ‘snow birds’ and my pulse has gone up to 110 and 118. On the internet it said it could be a faulty pacemaker. Is it possible to get it checked out in Spain or do I have to get back to England? My local hospital is Los Arcos del Mar Menor. Any information would be a great help. Yours Sincerely R Bennett

Dear Mr Bennett, As you say, the normal pulse rate for a healthy adult should be between 60 and 100 beats per minute, although when some heart diseases are present, it should be maintained below 60. Although pacemakers do not tend to be faulty, it can sometimes happen and one of the signs of this is an increased pulse rate. If you notice this is happening often you should go to a hospital to have the pacemaker checked out. You do not need to return to England to have it checked. Most hospitals in Spain have specialists who are familiar with pacemakers and can check whether they are working correctly or not and even change them if necessary.

I KNOW I’m a grumpy old sod but the world around me doesn’t half make it easy. I have written about my car before and people spoke to me and said it was something that ticked them off too. But this one has given me the serious hump. I got in my car after being away for two weeks and two warning lights came on, one saying ‘code 82’ and the other was a filter light. So having three years warranty and three years free servicing, I wasn’t too worried. I looked up ‘code 82’ in the handbook and it just said ‘change oil soon’. I thought that was strange as I’ve only done 18,000 miles in two and a half years. I take it to my local garage where I purchased the car, who now don’t sell them as Chevrolet has pulled out of Europe. The mechanic then proceeds to tell me I’ve been driving the car wrongly and it’s all my fault and it’s not covered by god knows how many warranties I have on the car. What? How can I be driving it wrongly? It’s a fully-automatic turbo diesel and, for

your information young man, I’ve been driving for 50 years and never had an accident! What came next left me flabbergasted like never before. He says I can’t turn the engine off, I mustn’t drive it out of the garage because if I do and I quote ‘you will break the engine. We have to change the engine oil immediately!’ Wait - it gets better. He asks me if when I stop, the engine fan carries on after I turn the engine off? “Yes, it does sometimes.” “Oh. Well if it does, start it up again and take it for a run getting it up over 3,000 rpm.” “Are you loco?” “I’ve just got home why would I want to go out again?” “You have to take the car to Malaga once a week reaching 4000rpm. Don’t use the automatic gearbox.” “Whoa, whoa hombre, what are you talking about? Why on earth would I want to do that?” “Because these cars, and many others, have this problem with big diesel engines.” I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That just doesn’t make any sense that the car I paid extra for to have an automatic gearbox I have to drive manually, at speeds that break the law, to a place I don’t want to go to at least once a week! “Oh and it’s going to cost you €207 too.” I now have to phone GM Europe and find out exactly what’s going on because surely this can’t be right. I’ll let you know!

Crackdown on wearing seatbelts LAW states all occupants of a vehicle must wear one AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

STATISTICS: The wearing of a seatbelt can reduce the risk of death by 80 per cent. DURING the recent crackdown on the wearing of seatbelts and child restraint systems carried out by police, a total of 2,728 people were caught not wearing one. Irresponsible adults allowed 167 children under 12 years of age to travel without the appropriate safety device, 46 of them in the front seat. Of all of those people found to be not wearing a seatbelt, 74 per cent of them were driving on conventional roads. The law states that all occupants within a vehicle must wear a seatbelt or restraining device appropriate to their height and weight. The rule of one seatbelt, one passenger must also be adhered to. Many modern cars for example are only fitted with two seatbelts in the

back, and so, irrespective of the width, only two passengers can be carried on that seat. During this week-long campaign, a total of 379,246 vehicles were checked, some from the air and others from the roadside or at checkpoints. The Pegasus-equipped helicopters were out in force, with many road users now being aware of their power, as there was an increase in the number of vehicle occupants who decided to ‘buckle up’ having spotted the helicopters in the air. Statistically, the wearing of a seatbelt can reduce the risk of death in a vehicle collision by 80 per cent and although adults can make the decision for themselves, the importance of ensuring children comply is paramount.

Ibanovich, at 22, is the youngest serving council member having joined the ‘young socialist’ party two years ago and appearing as number 10 on the socialist electoral list during last year’s municipal elections. A student at the university of Almeria, Ibanovich said she was excited and proud to take on the role, adding that she wanted to “work for the people of her town.”

In their Easter Bonnets JUDGES had a difficult job ELEANOR and Gilly’s Monday Afternoon Line Dance Class at Maloan’s Bar in Albox held their 8th Annual Easter Bonnet Parade on Easter Monday afternoon. Although there have been seven previous parades, this was the first one to be held at Bar Maloan’s. Class organisers Eleanor Tolman and Gilly ElliottBinns were both pleased and surprised to find that so many class members had joined into the spirit of the event. The judges this year had a particularly difficult job to do, because of the astoundingly high standard of bonnets entered. The winning bonnets this year were Lyn Williams in

third, Ann Green in second, and Doreen Rose in first place. All winners received boxes of biscuits and wine plus complimentary tickets for future Line Dance Classes. However, everyone in the class was a winner this year, because all attendees received an Easter Egg from the organisers. Eleanor and Gilly’s Line Dance Class is held every Monday afternoon, between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, at Maloan’s Bar in Albox. The app, launched by the town council, can be used to report incidents, make suggestions and send photos directly to the council.

The app also features news pages, information on events and attractions and a list of important telephone numbers. Users can also use the app to make appointments at different council departments. The free app, Ayuntamiento de Albox, can be downloaded for Apple devices on the app store or for android

Amazing amateurs in contest THE Garcia Ramos Secondary School will be the site of the newest edition of the National Amateur Theatre Contest, the longest running competition of this kind in Spain. Eight groups will participate in the produc-

But this year weather forced us to delay our traditional Easter Monday Paella at the end of Lent to Sunday April 24. Fortunately, although still early, most of the ingredients will be from the garden, as we will substitute broad beans for butter

Desert destiny JEREMY CLARKSON and his former Top Gear co-presenter Richard Hammond are in the process of filming their very own motoring show, which will debut on Amazon Prime in the near future. The two have been pictured filming in desert near Marrakech at the same studio which filmed Game of Thrones. The title of the upcoming show is yet to be revealed but is certain to feature fast cars and mayhem. Clarkson is finally back on the motor circuit after his controversial dismissal from the BBC, and the natural question is whether his new show will do battle with a newly-revamped Top Gear for ratings.

A centenary for BMW MOTORING evolution By Matthew Elliott WITH more than a full century elapsing since the founding of luxury vehicles, engines and motorbikes manufacturer BMW in Munich, a dedicated exhibition will open in the German city showcasing a fascinating spread of 100 years of motoring evolution. From April 6 to 10 the Techno Classica 2016 will feature a BMW stand devoted to telling the awe-inspiring story of motoring milestones through a selection of historic vehicles, to celebrate the company’s impressive anniversary. The excellent choice of vehicles will include the 1930s BMW 326 convertible. A BMW 502 ‘Barockengell’ from the late 1940s, a BMW M1, and on-

wards into the 21st century with the fanstastic BMW i8 sports car. The very first product to be emblazoned with the BMW logo will hover over the exhibit as lucky spectators get the chance to see an original Kelmm L25 light aircraft, built in 1927 and the oldest licensed aircraft in the country. There will also be a heavy focus on the BMW 02 series which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, while a fitting

tribute will be paid to other brands MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad. The 02 series is widely regarded as representing the pinnacle of vehicle manufacturing for the firm and making its hugely successful foray into customer car design. It immediately became the ‘epitome of the ultimate driving machine’, and was lauded for its agile handling and pioneering engine and chassis technology.

Johan Cruyff One of the world’s greatest-ever footballers and coach, Johan Cruyff, died in Spain, last Thursday, aged 68. The Dutchman scored 405 goals in 711 senior appearances for club and country between 1964 and 1984, playing for Ajax, Barcelona, Levante, Feyenoord, in America and Holland. He won 48 international caps and helped his country reach the 1974 World Cup final. Then, as a coach/manager, he guided Ajax and Barcelona to European glory. An early exponent of ‘Total Football,’ Johan won the Ballon d’Or three times (1971-73-74) and was the recipient of 36 medals overall, 22 as a player. The weather and the course were perfect for the eager 19th Holers to battle for the extensive rewards. Sean Curtis, Pete Dow, Gary Grey and Mike Plamer romped home to take first place with nett 57 strokes from Pat O Dywers team of Steve Tucker, Brian Hunt and Dave Denyer completing the course with nett 60 strokes. The All Ladies team of Sharon Stevens, Chrissie Dow, Christine Edwards and Karyn Espisito had a really bad day taking a nett 64 to bash the little white ball around this very pretty course. Of course the fault for their poor performance was laid directly at the feet of Chris Gledhill for his ‘helpful coaching’ whilst accompanying them, being unable to participate due to nursing an injured arm.
