Understandably, there is an element of self-interest in the Spanish comments as their economy is massively helped by the influx of British tourists, and there are an estimated 200,000 Spaniards living and working in Britain. It seems to some extent a rather strange situation when an acting government, which is likely to be either thrown out or will have to stand in new elections in June, is able to make such a farreaching decision, but as the Spanish acting government is making such positive noises there is no doubt the British will be happy with the position they are taking.

Clearly the next few days are going to be pivotal in the future of Britain and its membership of the EU, as if the Cameron proposals are rejected, there is no guarantee that the conservative party will even recommend a ‘remain’ vote when the referendum does takes place. Equally, it is possible that no final agreement or refusal of the Cameron plan will be the result of the meetings taking place over the next few days, but all UK passport holders who are entitled to vote in the referendum when it eventually comes should act as quickly as possible to at least ensure that they are registered.

They are there to fleece passersby and their favourite pitches are on the Levante Beach and the Avenida del Mediterraneo where British tourists predominate. Only the ‘trileros’ ever win because the pea supposedly hidden under a potato is usually tucked behind a long fingernail, and police campaigns have been insufficient to dissuade the ingenuous from playing. War on illegal blanket trips IN an effort to rid the town of illegal traders on the streets of Benidorm, Lorenzo Martinez, the Councillor for Citizen Security, has had a meeting with representatives of the Business Association of Travel Agencies of Benidorm, AVIBE, the Independent Dealers Association, AICO, and the Local Police. Martinez has made it clear the local government team is committed to eliminating the illegal trips. The council was pleased with the collaboration of trade associations and travel agencies at the meeting, and has proposed that Hosbec, the Hotel Business Association of Benidorm, is also included.

Hotel Selomar redevelopment moves a step closer THE granting of planning permission for Hotel Selomar, located on Levante beach, has moved a step closer following authorisation from the Provincial Coastal Service. The foreign investment group wanting to purchase it, which includes Axel Tabarot, son of the famous French businessman

Roch Tabarot, has submitted plans to city hall. These include changes to the front of the building to comply with the zoning demarcation, as well as modifications to the side passage. It is hoped that the latest developments will break the deadlock that has left this hotel closed for eight years. In the event that the sale is carried out, the investment group plans to start its reform as soon as possible. It expects the work to take between 12 and 16 months, meaning a potential completion date of 2017. The building currently belongs to the Almodobar family.

A campaign to replace stolen food LAST Saturday the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) organised ‘Operation Kilo’, a food collection campaign in several Benidorm supermarkets in an effort to replenish their stocks, following a robbery at their storage facility a few weeks ago. The collections took place in Carrefour Express on Avenida del Mediterraneo, Vidal, located on Avenida de Alfonso Puchades and at Mercadona on Calle Primavera. They also collected at the municipal market. They are always happy to accept donations of rice, crackers, beans, flour, pasta, sugar, canned tuna, smoothies and juices, tomato sauce, cocoa, whole milk and canned pate.

No plans for desalinated water to be bought in OTHER plans for the summer for Teulada and Benitachell By Linda Hall TEULADA and Benitachell do not intend to buy Javea’s desalinated water this summer. “They aren’t in a position to send us water, as we saw last summer, because it’s needed in Javea,” said Teulada mayor Carlos Llinares. His Benitachell counterpart Josep Antoni Femenia who is also president of the Teulada-Benitachell Water Consortium questioned the offer of two million cubic metres of desalinated water from Javea’s water company Amjasa. “Last year we bought 200,000 cubic metres of water and when we’d received 90,000 cubic metres, they cut off the supply,” said Femenia who likened selling water at €1.5 per cubic metre “to an auction.” No meeting has been arranged with Javea’s mayor and Amjasa officials, said Femenia and Linares although both in-

Neighbourhood president resigns THE president of a neighbourhood association in Alicante has resigned after being attacked. Francisco Sanchez Cristobal has been president of the Campoamor Plaza de America Alicante neighbourhood group for over 20 years and was a founding member, but has now resigned from his post after being attacked by another member. He said during a small argument he was grabbed by the neck and still has bruises. After asking the board to expel the member they “did not support me and I had no choice but to resign,” said Sanchez Cristobal. The veteran community leader said: “After 41 years as part of the network of citizen participation I did not expect this.” The vice-president will now take over until a new president is elected.

Sanchez Cristobal has now left the matter of the assault in the hands of the police.

AROUND 80 per cent of adolescents aged between 14 and 18 have tried alcohol and almost the same percentage have had a drink in the past year. That’s according to the findings from the latest survey on drug use in students of secondary schools (ESTUDES), prepared by the Ministry of Health. Minister for Health, Alfonso Alonso noted that these figures show consumption has declined in the past two years. However, experts in the field are still concerned at the findings: “We are talking about minors and therefore consumption should be zero and yet this survey shows that an overwhelming majority drinks, it is a resounding failure,” said Bartolome Perez Galvez, head

Fire in Calpe centre A GYM fire in a Calpe shopping centre forced several shops to close for business as a huge clean up operation was undertaken. An eagle-eyed neighbour called police after he spotted smoke coming from the gym in the Plaza Central de Calp on Sunday evening (February 14). Firemen were quickly on the scene but it took more than two hours to bring the blaze under control. A police spokesman said the area was a disaster zone and at this early stage the cause of the fire is not known. Investigations continue.

Life changing encounter with a good Samaritan JAMES and Kerrie are now living together in a house in Alfaz, something they didn’t think possible a few months ago

and Kerrie Lloyd in the run up to Christmas 2015, but after a brief encounter with a good Samaritan their lives have been completely transformed. They were sacked from their jobs in Gibraltar after their passports were stolen, which meant they were no longer able to cross the border to their place of employment. They weighed up the potential for employment in Spain and decided to head for Benidorm. But with no passports it wasn’t as easy as they

thought and the only work they could find was illegal street selling and they were quickly moved on by the Local Police. The young couple eventually resorted to begging. Kerrie said: “It was the most desperate of times and every night we feared for our lives.” James added: “Sometimes we were making no more than €20 a day, just enough to eat, but certainly no prospect of putting any money by for accommodation so at nights we slept on the beach.”

It was just before Christmas when Kerrie was handed a few euros by a director of Easy Consulting, based in Alfaz del Pi, the largest employer of British expats in the Costa Blanca. They began talking and Kerrie found herself pouring her heart out. When the director found out the young couple were both homeless and unemployed he offered them immediate employment. He then organised a room for them in a local hotel and picked up the tab. Training started the very next day and James and Kerrie took to the jobs like ducks to water. “It wasn’t easy,” said James, “it’s not a job for everyone but the training was hands on, they were very patient and everyone was so very supportive.” Kerrie and James are now living together in a rented house in Alfaz, something they wouldn’t have thought possible just a few months ago. In February, James and Kerrie were joint winners of Easy Consulting ‘employees of the month’ and won flight vouchers which will enable them to bring James’s father to Spain in March. “It’s not exactly a rags to riches story,” said Kerrie with a smile, “but it’s something we are both working on.”

Team work saves the life of 70-year-old British man in Denia POLICE broke into the manâ€™s home to find him AMBULANCE men and Guardia Civil in Denia saved the life of an elderly British man with their prompt and professional action. A friend of the man had alerted the Guardia Civil when he had failed to turn up at a prearranged meeting and was not answering his phone. The friend explained that this was highly unusual and convinced the police to visit his home. When the police arrived they could get no answer at the manâ€™s door and

took the decision to break in. It was a decision that would ultimately save the manâ€™s life as they found him lifeless on the floor of the apartment. The first impressions of the police were that he had died, but on closer inspection they detected signs of life and performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived. The ambulance men managed to revive the man and he was taken to Denia hospital where he is now recovering.

Third school break in this month POLICE have confirmed that Ondara high school was broken into at the weekend and was the third school in the area to be burgled in February after two Denia schools were targeted earlier in the month.

Police believe that the burglars at the Denia and Ondara schools are the same people who use special technology to disable the school alarm system. They then damage doors and windows to gain access to the schools and re-

move anything of value. In Ondara they concentrated their efforts on removing a number of computers. Police say that the burglars appear to be very professional and leave no traces behind. They are yet to be caught.

Airport total up ALICANTE-ELCHE airport registered in January a total of 593,149 passengers, an increase of 19 per cent over the same month of 2015. Domestic passenger traffic grew 21 per cent, reaching 94,428 users, and international passengers increased 18.4 per cent. The countries with the most passengers last month were the UK (215,989 travellers), Germany (46,127), the Netherlands (40,676), Belgium (37,363) and Norway (32,739). The airport handled 4,617 flights in January, with most connecting with the UK (1,375 operations), Spain (1,110), Germany (324), Belgium (298), Netherlands (274), Norway (227) and Algeria (205).

Persimmons are the new orange BETTER-PAID than citrus fruit and prized for their sweet, delicious flesh By Linda Hall THE four-month persimmon season is practically over, but each year there are more around. In the past they were more likely to be found only in open-air fruit and vegetable markets where they would be sold as caquis. Although not yet hailed internationally as a New Age wonder-food they are now prized for their ‘sweet, delicious flesh packed with healthpromoting nutrients’ and demand has multiplied. With increased consumption, growers in the Valencian Community are more inclined to look on the largelyunloved caqui as a money-making persimmon because they fetch a better price than citrus fruit. They sell in Spain at around €2 a kilo

but although growers are receiving far less , between 40 and 50 cents a kilo , this is preferable to the 15 cents they can expect for navel oranges. Some Valencia Community growers are uprooting citrus fruit trees and planting persimmons and the La Ribera area (Valencia) produced 220 million kilos last year, 85 per cent of national production. The Valencia Region currently dominates Spain’s production, but Murcia and Andalucia are beginning to plant their own persimmons. Agricultural sources calculate that by 2020 production will top 650 million kilos and are beginning to query this amount as excessive. Is the persimmon bubble going to burst, they ask?

Cold spell concern for crops THE predicted cold snap has caused concern for farmers saying it could ruin their crops. Almond trees are already in bloom and citrus crops could also be affected. Farmers are taking action by burning straw bales at sunrise as the smoke can be used to prevent frost but without the heat of the fire that can open the flowers and lead to the loss of fruit. However the cold is not bad for all crops and can benefit vines which are in a dormant period and are not particularly affected. Freezing temperatures can also kill off bugs that can lead to disease and damage to the plant in spring and summer.

stopped at the German border and the men were told they would be marching to the Russian front just in time for winter. Most of the men from southern Spain had never even seen a snowflake and as the Russian winter took hold, Felipe and his comrades found themselves in temperatures of 40 below. It truly is a tale of survival and Felipe hopes it will also be published in Spanish by the end of the year.

Twitter course A COURSE designed to help people get the most out of Twitter is to be run in Finestrat next month. Arranged by the council’s Youth department, the course will run over three weeks, and will teach the students how to be more effective on Twitter, improve their visibility, and increase their number of followers. They will also learn tools that will make it easier to work with the network, and

synchronise content with other social networks for greater impact. The course takes place on Mondays in March (7, 14 and 21) from 5pm to 8pm. Craft and farmer’s market in La Nucia A NEW Craft and Farmer’s market is being held at the Plaza de la Ermita de Sant Vicent in La Nucia. Held from 9.30am on the second Saturday of each month between now and June, the market is organised by the Association of Small Farmers and Artisans of Marina Baixa. The market will be selling fruit, vegetables, organic honey, bread and pastries from small producers in the region, as well as handicrafts and cosmetics.

By Keith Baker IT’S not unusual to hear of people doing fun or challenging things (or both) to raise money for charity, as there are so many kind-hearted folk around looking for ways to raise money for an even greater number of good causes. Every now and then we hear of something that really catches the imagination, and so it is with the latest exploit of Rob

and Debbie Frost from Huddersfield. On Friday March 11 they plan to walk up Puig Campana, and before they come back down again they have planned to sit down, relax, and listen to a selection of songs chosen by various members of their family. They expect the trip to take around seven hours. The charity set to benefit from the generosity of their supporters is Cancer Research

UK, which is close to their hearts due to lost loved ones. It’s not the first time this charity has benefitted from their generous efforts. In 2011 they walked from Huddersfield to Benidorm, raising £1,700 in the process. They took seven weeks, and dubbed the adventure ‘Walking to Church’. After spending two weeks in Benidorm, they marked their Silver wedding anniversary by renewing their vows.

Towns sign up to promote an ancient route as a tourist attraction EIGHT towns linked by the Camino del Peix will promote it as a tourist route. The Cami del Peix, which begins in Villajoyosa, is the 19th century name for the road used by carters who took fish inland to Alcoy and returned with textiles, cigarette paper and other manufactured goods. Villajoyosa and Alcoy have agreed to promote Cami del Peix as a walking

and tourist route. Towns along the route, Orcheta, Relleu, Sella, Torremanzanas, Benifallim and Penaguila, have also signed up to the initiative. Alcoy’s Mayor Toni Frances said: “Today we have begun a mission to make Cami del Peix a sports, culture and tourism product and a reference throughout the Mediterranean. “The Cami del Peix has 2,000 years of history and there are some sections

of the road that existed in the Seventh Century BC. That makes it one of the oldest in the Iberian peninsula.” Frances went on to say that it was important to unite the interior of Alicante Province with coast. “We have so much to offer. Inland towns deserve visiting because they have character, incredible settings, important traditions, culture, history and quality products.”

Rural road improvements for residents THE access road to Partida Les Hortetes is being widened, according to the Department of Works and Technical Services of the Town of Finestrat. As part of the project a tree that hampered visibility for traffic has been removed. Also, a wall has had to be relocated to make more room. According to Thomas

Selles of the council, the project is being undertaken in response to requests from the residents. Other works include the asphalting of the road linking the Partida La Foia with Partida Cantereria and upgrading works on the Partida El Moli, which includes the installation of a fence to improve the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

Dogs being targeted A RESIDENT of Alcoy walking her dog in the La Sang area has discovered a sausage with a bag of rat poison inside. The dog was sniffing at something in the bushes when the discovery was made. The woman then reported the incident to the Local Police. The poison had clearly been deliberately stuffed inside the sausage. There have been reports of similar incidents aimed at dogs in recent months.

world of Scouting. During the two days, 50 youngsters participated in activities and local visits. On the Sunday they held their official ceremony, at which badges were awarded. One was for Joan Ripoll for completing 10 years as a scout.

TWENTY parents have successfully completed a course on cyberbullying at the Seu Universitaria de La Nucia. The objective was to provide the tools to enable family members to identify, confront and combat bullying. More courses will follow. Blood donations wanted today TODAY, Thursday February 18, you can give blood at the Consultorio Auxiliar de Salud de Pinar de Garaita in La Nucia. The transfusion service particularly need groups O+, Oand A+. To give blood, you need to be over 18 and under 65, and weigh more than 50 kilos. There is no need to fast beforehand, and having high cholesterol does not prevent you from donating. Men can donate blood four times a year and women three times. You do not need to book in advance. Simply turn up at the next session. However, there is an EU ruling which states that anyone, regardless of nationality, who has lived in the UK for six straight months between 1980 and 1996 cannot give blood due to mad cow’s disease. The session is from 5pm to 8.30pm.

More new businesses in town growth spurt THE town of Villajoyosa processed 133 licences for the creation of new businesses during 2015. The Department of Economic Promotion has also confirmed that no businesses closed during the year, confirming the growth trend. Every effort is being made by the council to speed up the application process for the licences, according to the councillor for Economic Development, Marta Selles.

Locals discovered various walls and façades had been sprayed with paint, as had some street furniture.

Similar vandalism at the football field located within the park has only recently been dealt with. Criticising the act, the mayor said it gives the town a bad image. He indicated that he will study with municipal officers ‘how to minimise such damage’ in the park and implement appropriate measures to prevent it from reoccurring.

A further man was arrested in Onteniente and another in Ceuta. Although of Syrian, Moroccan and Jordanian origin, five have Spanish nationality. A church with a history ARCHITECT Antoni Banyuls Perez was in Teulada recently, detailing the history and features of the town’s Santa Catalina church. The talk was organised by the Juan GilAlbert Cultural Institute and the Teulada’s Enric Valor Culture group. Banyuls outlined the history of the church which was built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier 14th century church. As well as attending to the local population’s religious needs it also served as a fortress to protect the town against the Barbary Pirates who repeatedly attacked the Valencian Region’s coast.

This year is the Year of the Fire Monkey, the Buddhists explained, which according to Tibetan tradition, invites action.

By Linda Hall ONE of inland Alicante’s most famous restaurants could close. Jeroni Moncho Pascual, better-known as Pinet, has run Casa Pinet in Tarbena for the last 42 years. It has been compared to a museum, or shrine, to Spain’s left wing because Pinet, now 78, made no secret of being a ‘Red’ even when this was an incriminating admission. Now he is threatened with a different kind of trouble because the restaurant is municipal property and the lease, which expired in November 2014, has not been renewed. Pinet and his son, Jeroni Moncho Ferrer, wanted a five-year extension, while the town hall has offered a two-year contract which the father and son distrust. It contains a clause which would allow the town hall to sell the property over their heads, they said. “We can’t do anything there without permission from the Generalitat and that won’t be possible unless the town hall

‘Big is beautiful, too’ says model PLUS-SIZE fashion show to help others By Linda Hall ALCOY will soon be treated to an anti-fatism fashion show. It is organised by Sonia Sanchez Vazquez, a plus-size model who is fighting discrimination against the overweight. Profits from the show will be donated to Alcoy’s Animals and Plants Protection Society. She was bullied at school, Sonia confessed, and still remembers her school days

with sadness although she bears no grudges, she told a Spanish interviewer. Things started to change when she was 14 and began a hairdressing and beauty course, but it was only last summer that she decided to go to a casting for plus-size models. In September she was named the Valencia Region’s Model of the Month and hopes to go on to the final in Barcelona where she will compete with 23 other plus-

size models for the Model XL title. Sonia has now decided to help other people who suffer discrimination because of their weight by organising the fashion show. It is to be held in Alcoy’s Sala Agora on Saturday (February 20) at 7.30pm and 10 young women, three girls and three boys, none of them professional models, will be taking part. “They are doing this in support of my antifatism protest,” Sonia said.

Poorer pupils will often underachieve BASED on study of maths, science and reading By Linda Hall SPANISH pupils from needy families often underachieve academically, a recent survey claimed. This verdict from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) was based on 2012 evaluations of 15-year-old Spanish pupils in maths, science and reading. The OECD found that pupils at ‘concertado’ or state-aided schools in prosperous neighbourhoods were 33 per cent less likely to underperform.

Children at state schools in disadvantaged neighbourhoods were two-and-a-half times more likely to fail in their studies, the study concluded. Toni Gonzalez Picornel, spokesman for the Institutos de Secundaria (secondary schools) association in Alicante Province, questioned the OECD findings. He did not agree that family income was a deciding factor in academic achievement. Gonzalez Picornel said: “Lack of money should not prevent a young person who wants to study from doing so.”

It’s hard getting to work THEIR journey to work is “difficult and dangerous” staff at Francesc de Borja hospital in Gandia said. Nine months after the new hospital opened, no-one has taken into account that approximately 1,000 employees must get there each day, the

Gandia Health Department’s staff committee complained. Public transport routes into Gandia are limited and infrequent and the urban bus service is insufficient, a spokesperson said. Reaching the hospital on foot is hazardous and in-

volves crossing three busy roads, although there has been no increase in the number of pedestrian crossings. Street lighting was also inadequate which posed additional problems for staff on night duty, the committee added.

How best to negotiate roundabouts IF you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. • APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. Let us see some examples. • 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. • CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. • TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

Fears over UK interest rates GOOD for those who borrow money, but bad for those who have invested By John Smith AS the pound declines against the main currencies, money flows towards the USA, employment figures aren’t quite as healthy and rumours abound of either increased cuts in government spending or increase in taxation, the former city regulator Lord Turner has entered the discussion warning that without radical policies, the UK economy could be stuck with low interest rates “almost indefinitely.” Low interest rates are clearly good for those who need to borrow money but bad for those who need to see their investments grow, and as banks seem to pay very low rates of interest whilst charging much higher rates to those borrowers who they accept, the overall situation does not, according to Lord Turner, assist the economy. In an interview with the BBC after observing “interest rates in the UK may not go up beyond 2 per cent by 2020,” he also commented on peer-to-peer lending, which is one of the fastestgrowing areas of financial services. It appeals to borrowers who have been turned down by High Street banks and

FINANCIAL STAKE: The government has decided to postpone the sale of its shares in Lloyds Banking Group. CHANCELLOR George Osborne has decided to postpone the sale of the government’s final stake in Lloyds Banking Group, after admitting that the global turmoil in stock markets and slowing growth was the reason for the delay. With an expected ‘windfall’ of £2 billion (€2.6 billion), this was to be a useful addition

to the government’s finances, as well as confirmation that the banking sector had returned to normal, and the sale was part of the conservative party manifesto at the last election. There was some serious criticism of the sale of the first tranche of Lloyds shares in October last year, when the government was accused of

pitching the price to corporate investors too low, but since that time, the price of its shares has fallen and banks are not performing as well as expected. Prices then were in the region of 78p per share, which seemed to show a profit for the government which had invested large amounts to support

the bank, but they are currently trading around 65p, so there could be a considerable loss if the government allowed the sale to go ahead. If that wasn’t bad enough, the government’s other bank, the Royal Bank of Scotland, has had to make huge provisions to cover fines and expected legal actions.

By John Smith AFTER the EU announced that it was to review the need for a €500 bank note, former chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank, Peter Sands has authored a report, which suggests that all high value bank notes should be phased out in order to make it more difficult for criminals and terrorists to move funds around the world. His main targets are the €500 (said to have been introduced at the behest of Germany which previously had a 500 mark note), British £50 and US $100, although he has suggested that the world’s 20 largest economies should consider their own situation and review the proposal at the next G20 summit to be held in China in September. According to the report, each year the movement of ‘dirty’ money exceeds $2 trillion (€1.77 trillion), and rather than spend time catching the criminals, his report argues that governments

Massive fraud action in Madrid Court against Brazilian oil company A COMPLAINT will be filed as investors have lost billions of dollars, euros and Brazilian reals By John Smith MANY Spanish investors were attracted to purchase shares in Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, when shares were launched on the world’s stock exchanges in 2010 to raise $72.8 billion (€63.5 billion), which was the world’s largest ever share launch and made it the fourth largest company by capitalisation in the world. All appeared to be going well with the company, reported profits grew and it soon overtook Microsoft in value but by late 2013, Merrill Lynch reported that it was now the world’s most indebted company. By late 2014, its debts were estimated by Moodys as having reached $170 billion (€150 billion) and that effectively the company could only go from bad to worse. In response, an investigation under the code name Operation Car Wash was initiated, which suggested that contracts worth up to $22 billion (€19.4 billion) were issued ‘suspiciously’ and the fingers of corruption were observed throughout the company. Naturally, these problems had an adverse effect on share prices and a number of Spanish investors have lost quite large amounts of money because of the alleged activities of the company and its management. The company, which is now based in Germany, was originally formed by an amalgamation of a German and British company, and owns and operates six different airlines. Its Thomson Airways is the biggest airline in the group and largest charter airline in the world.

Petrobras et al. Petrobras is majorityowned by the Brazilian government. The complaint will allege that when years of complex fraud and bribery schemes orchestrated by management and officials of Petrobras were finally revealed to the public in 2014, investors lost billions of dollars, euros and Brazilian reals, resulting from significant asset write-downs and precipitous declines in Petrobras share prices. Their argument is that when inviting investors to purchase their shares, Petrobras undertook to comply with European stock market rules, and therefore provided that the shares were either purchased in Spain or were transmitted back to Spain then investors are entitled to take action under Spanish law. The first investor lawsuit was filed as a class action in the United States on behalf of investors there, but is only able to include those who invested in the USA. In Spain the laws are different and those who have lost money must ‘opt in’ to a joint lawsuit. It is suggested that investors (a) who purchased common and preferred shares of Petrobras anytime between 2004 and July 28, 2015 and (b) suffered and/or are in danger of suffering (further) damages as a consequence of the alleged fraud, contact ISAF Petrobras so that it can determine eligibility to pursue claims in the Spanish court system.

THE majority of people I meet in my profession seek my services because they have bodyweight issues or feel that they have lost control of their fitness, and are subsequently suffering structural

physical and medical problems. Our initial conversation is based on their background and lifestyle and includes aspects of their lives they feel they no longer have control over. Setting goals for them right at the beginning of their journey with me is purpose driven to give them a direction with a definite target to reach.

By the time I have persuaded a client to sit down and chat with me about how they plan to change and improve their life, they often already have their aspirations and a fairly clear picture of what they want to look and feel like in six - 12 months time. There are other people that regardless of how many words of encouragement you offer them, will simply not buy into themselves and accept that they can achieve their goals. I have weighed clients and given them their medical statistics that are realistically set targets for them. Common responses: • There is no way I could ever be that weight again. • That’s far too hard for me I won’t be able to cope. I have found over time, that

if I was unable to help a client to see what they could achieve and how they had all of the capabilities to reach the goals they clearly wanted to reach, then we were fighting a losing battle from the beginning. Instead of looking ahead to the fit attractive person that they are slowly emerging into, they cling onto their picture of an unattractive overweight being that is continuously falling back and never able to climb upwards and on to the next positive level of their journey. There is truly nothing more self-gratifying than to see a client taking ownership of themselves. Their self-belief that they can achieve their goal and the cherry on the cake (that would be treat day!!) is when they turn up to my session in attractive new colourful gym kit and trainers, their hair is neat, with a confident triumphant glow. They have indeed taken the time to look in that mirror and say: I CAN do this, and I AM going to do this… I AM going to win! And all I have to say is… Be careful what you wish for… You may just get it.

Loss of hearing

SPECIALIST: Doctor Luis Perez Belmonte. This week one of our readers has asked the doctor about hearing loss. DEAR doctor, For some time now I seem to have been suffering from loss of hearing, my family say I turn the TV up far too loud and that I can’t hear them when they talk to me. My doctor says this is normal at my age (65) and that I shouldn’t worry about it, however my children tell me I can’t go on like this as it could be dangerous, for example they say I can’t hear properly when I’m driving. Who is right? Doctor responds: - One of the parts of our bodies which are most affected by the passing of time is our ears, causing loss of hearing which is often minor but in some cases can affect normal daily life. It can be quite dangerous under certain circumstances, such as while driving, as drivers must be able to hear properly to avoid causing harm to themselves and/or others. I think you should be evaluated by an ear, nose and throat specialist and

also get yourself checked out at a drivers’ medical centre to see whether you can continue driving or not. Reader continues: I also hear a ringing sound in my ears which comes and goes, why is this? Am I going to need a hearing aid? Doctor replies: - Ringing sounds are usually a consequence of an abnormal functioning of the inner ear, which is not always linked to a loss of hearing. There are certain exercises and training which, along with medication, can help reduce the intensity of these sounds. If your hearing loss is important and stops you leading a normal daily life, you should go to a specialist doctor who will consider whether a hearing aid would help you hear better. Occasionally, depending on the cause, it is impossible to recover lost hearing but only a specialist at a medical centre can ascertain this.

Ask the Optician - Can Cancer Affect the Eyes? Louise Stone, Store Director, Specsavers Opticas Javea WORLD Cancer Day is held each year on February 4 and unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer. It aims to save millions of lives each year by raising awareness about the disease, so we wanted to share some information about cancer and the eyes, what it is, how you can spot it, and what can happen. Can cancer affect the eyes? Yes it can, although it is rare. There are two main types of cancer which can be found inside the eye, Primary Intraocular Cancer which starts inside the eyeball and Metastic Cancer, which starts somewhere else in the body and then spreads to the eye. What are the symptoms of eye cancer? Unfortunately this is a disease which often comes with little or no symptoms, which makes it difficult to spot. Some of the symptoms of eye cancer can include, loss of vision, seeing flashing lights, a dark spot on the iris which gradually grows, a visible lump on your eyelid and pain in and around the eye. How can eye cancer be diagnosed? In many cases eye cancer can be spotted during a routine eye test. For example, Andrew Beckett went to Specsavers in Mallorca for an eye test after noticing his vision had become blurred and thought he needed some new glasses. During the sight test the optician immediately suspected that there was a prob-

lem with his eye and advised him to go straight to casualty to have it checked out in more detail. Within 15 minutes of arriving at the hospital, Andrew was seen by the doctor and then referred to an eye specialist for tests. The tests revealed cancer of the eye and he was quickly admitted to hospital for an operation to remove his eye. Mr Beckett has now fully recovered from his cancer and has been fitted with a prosthetic eye and is incredibly grateful the eye test spotted the problem before the cancer spread. There are many other conditions which can be picked up by a simple visit to the opticians, including diabetes, brain tumours and glaucoma. If necessary the optician will refer you directly for further medical examination to an Ophthalmologist or your GP for treatment. Spain’s use of sedatives rises THE Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) warns that Spain has one of the highest consumptions of anxiety medication and sleeping pills in Europe, as the country increased its use by 57 per cent between 2000 and 2012. The Ministry of Health said that the use of these pills “continues to grow unchecked,” and this high consumption involves an expenditure of about €750 million, which may even increase. There are around 35 different benzodiazepines (tranquillisers) that are pharmacologically very similar. The Ministry of Health warns that these drugs “should not be taken lightly,” and after about four weeks of treatment patients should begin to come off them as they can “quickly create dependency.” They also warned of the risks such as cognitive impairment and they may influence the ability to drive or encourage uninhibited impulsive behaviours similar to what happens with the consumption of alcohol.

BEFORE ebooks, if you didn’t fancy the book you were reading, you could quietly bin it and nobody would know. But ebook sellers can tell which books you finish and which you give up on. Surprisingly, Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning The Goldfinch was completed by only 44 per cent of British readers. The highest-rating categories for completion were romance and crime thrillers - the categories many feel embarrassed about admitting they prefer. Aren’t we supposed to say we can’t wait to get our hands on the Booker shortlist and anything else (so-called ‘airport fiction’) is a ‘guilty pleasure’? Well, it was precisely about my own crime thrillers that I was recently asked to give a talk by the Benahavis Decorative and Fine Arts Society (BDFAS). The inspiration for them, the writing

Give any one to a quiet, self-effacing character and all the preconceptions predominate. And in your mind’s eye, all you’ll see is Trump/Clinton/Cameron as, in psychologists’ jargon, feelings of transference take over. Which brings me on to that old chestnut: writer’s block. Here I’m reminded of (Raymond) Chandler’s Law: “When in doubt, have a man come through a door with a gun in his hand.” Good grief! And, finally, what about the actual writing? Grammar and so on. Which reminds me. Once one of my readers graciously offered to proofread my manuscript and pinpoint any errors in punctuation, spelling and style. Of course i spel perffecttly and theres never no punktuation, erors! so her job was like, :- easy! Charity quiz raises funds A CHARITY quiz held by the Arenal Lodge of Freemasons has raised €320 for the El Preventorio children’s home in Gandia. Cancer Care in Javea CANCER Care was visited by the President of Anemona, the breast cancer support charity in the Benidorm/Villajoyosa area. Maria and her team explained the focus of Anemona (www.anemona.org) and the role of the many volunteers who support people affected by breast cancer. On Cancer Careâ€™s previous visit to meet the ladies from the team at Anemona, they spoke of trying to raise funds to purchase a machine which detects the early stages of Lymphoma, cancer of the lymph nodes. Cancer Care was able to donate â‚Ź20,000.

Free concert A CONCERT at the Auditorio Centro Social in Villajoyosa tomorrow (Friday February 19) will cover the history of music from ancient times until today. DEAR EWN, People really irritate me over the access and cost of entrance to the Caminito del Rey. First they complained that they couldn’t get tickets even though it was relatively easy to go online and book ahead, then they were up in arms over allocation to hotel and restaurant owners (which was admittedly a bit naughty), who then only handed them over if you had a meal. Now, because the whole thing is being h a n d e d o v e r t o a p riv a te company to release council workers for hopefully more important matters, they are all complaining about a €10 charge! It costs more or less the same to see a film and the walk cost a heck of a lot to get ready and now keep safe and open for visitors. Taxi strike DEAR EWN, With regards to the forthcoming Malaga taxi strike, I really have no sympathy left for local taxi drivers. DEAR All, I am impressed with the trouble that you all take to keep us up to date with all of the developments along the coast and it was particularly good news to hear about the extra service that BA are going to offer from Stansted to Malaga. Whilst flights are still pretty expensive compared to the halcyon days of the late 70s and early 80s when there was plenty of competition, the more options there are, the better it is for all passengers. It seems owner Johanna Helander took over the business two-and-a-half years ago at just the right time. Knitting is now very popular and cool, and there’s a growing number of young people taking it up as a hobby. It’s not just a pastime for

the ladies either. Johanna said she also has a small but dedicated number of men amongst her customers. So even if you’re unable to get to Albir you can still buy from her extensive range. ALTHOUGH it is still officially winter, there has been an almost seamless transition from a mild autumn to the beginning of spring, without a real winter, so the spring explosion of colour from trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs is coming early. The earliest flowering trees include deciduous trees such as pears, quince, cherry, apricots and evergreen citruses. Plant orange, mandarin and lemon trees in the garden and the spring air will be filled with the sweet scent of the profuse hatch of white flowers. Plant a ‘Luna’ lemon and you can achieve a similar effect every six to eight weeks of the year, but on a smaller scale. Then there are the more spectacular mid and late spring flowering trees such as the callistemon (bottle brush tree), oleander, jacaranda, magnolia, schinus (mock pepper tree), the spring flowering mimosa, philadelphus (mock orange), viburnum, the miniature and full size waxy red flowered pomegranate and showy tamarisks. Below and around the trees one can plant early flowering bushes and climbing shrubs, such as camellias, yellow brooms, low growing purple lantanas and plumbago. These will be closely followed by bougainvilleas, solanums, wisteria,

xplosion of our garden honeysuckle, hibiscus, the taller red, orange and yellow lantanas, rock roses, and of course roses if you have a suitable soil rich in humus and water retaining. Moving down to smaller plants, a dedicated bed of perennials or plants mixed in with shrubs can give a very colourful display. Try planting the elegant bird of paradise flower (strelitzia), echium with its impressive leaves and spires of blue or white flowers, purple, red and yellow margaritas, brilliant coloured rudbeckias and valerian with continuous pink flowerings. Traditionally spring was the time to plant geraniums already in flower, but the need to spray them weekly against the dreaded geranium moth from the day you purchase them, has led many gardeners to stop buying them. If your puppy defecates in the wrong place, stop him by saying NO in a loud and assertive tone. Apply deodoriser on places where he eliminated so he will not go there again. The potty place must be free of distractions,

your pup must not consider play a part of potty. Confinement When your puppy is left alone in your home it is recommended that he be placed in a crate or confined area. Confinement is a good way to keep your puppy safe and prevent housetraining accidents. However, it should not be used as a form of punishment, for isolating pets for a long time can be very detrimental to them. Confinement can be the source of behavioural problems like excessive barking, self-mutilation, digging and hyperactivity. Puppies also need the essentials like exercise, daily companionship and playtime.

Safety zone, grey zone and danger zone In a puppy’s daily life, there is a thing called temporary ‘safety zone’. It is the time that the owner can trust the puppy to hold his urine after he has defecated or was taken for a walk. To know your puppy’s safety zone, you should first record for several days your puppy’s urinating and defecating schedules. After that, deduct 15-30 minutes from the period of minimum interval between elimination. Do not let your puppy drink a lot of water during that time to make sure the safety zone works. Grey zones and danger zones are those outside the safety zone. Closely supervise your puppy when he is not in his crate.

FALLING in love is a very personal thing, you fall in love with someone because you find the person particularly attractive for one or several reasons and some reasons are more important than others. The majority of buyers buy a property because they literally fall in love with it! Will buyers fall in love with your property? If you’re selling your property you will want buyers to fall in love with your property, it’s not easy and for the buyer it’s the same as falling in love with a person, it’s very personal. Every buyer is different and will fall in love with a property if the property is attractive to them in one or several ways.

ROMEO, ROMEO: Falling in love is a very personal thing and that includes property. With many years of experience in selling and buying properties in Spain, my job is to make sure that I know as much as possible about what the buyer will want to buy and match the buyer’s requirements with a selection of properties which are close to what they want or love. Buyers could be looking for prop-

erty in the city close to schools, a holiday resort close to the beach, a golf location with a protected environment, or gated community for extra security, the choice is endless. Most people in the property industry would say people buy because location, location, location, is everything.

Which is true up to a point but it oversimplifies thinking behind why buyers fall in love with a property. In my experience, most buyers have a picture of what they are looking for, they normally have preconceived ideas of what they want and don’t want their dream home to be like and when they see something

that is close to their mental picture, it’s love at first sight and they buy it. Of course the buyers’ financial budget is an important factor and will be different for every buyer, but with a little compromise, the buyer can still fall in love with a property, even though it’s not 100 per cent perfect. One recent study asked buyers what they looked for when buying their dream home and the results show the location is first, followed by the price, the exterior and interior appearance, the living area, the kitchen, the master bedroom, natural light, design features, decoration and safety. They say that for every person looking to fall in love there is a perfect match somewhere, I think it’s the same with buying property, there is a property waiting, for a buyer to love. Home sales grow dramatically

STAMP DUTY: The amount varies across the provinces.

Allow for extra costs HOME SALES: Higher than expected performance in 2015. HOME sales in Spain grew by 11.1 per cent in 2015, marking the largest yearly rebound in the eight years since the beginning of the global recession. It was a much higher than anticipated performance following on from 2014 which had registered a more modest 2 per cent increase. A grand total of 354,132 homes changed hands over the course of the year. The figures are being received with moderate optimism from economists who point out that in 2007 more

than 775,000 homes were sold, and that the current figures are still much closer to a catastrophic 2013 which saw 312,593 sales. The market is considered to be in much better health and in more of a standardisation process than forming a new bubble. Used homes represented 78 per cent of all housing transactions and saw a 37.2 per cent increase, while new building sales actually dropped 33.7 per cent to just 77,865 purchases. Valencia and the Balearics registered the most sales per 100,000 in-

habitants. Andalucia saw the most overall with more than 70,000 sales executed, far exceeding both Catalonia and Madrid which clocked in just above 50,000 each.

PROPERTY experts in Spain estimate that when buying a property it is essential to add an extra rough amount of 8 per cent if buying outright, to 15 per cent if using a mortgage, to the purchasing price in order to account for the extra costs associated with closing the deal. There are a great deal of intangibles to consider which depend on the region and the nature of the property.

Whether the building is new or used will determine whether and what level of VAT you will have to pay and also whether stamp duty applies, the amount varying across provinces. New housing is classed in a complex fashion and will require VAT and stamp duty (AJD), while used housing is not taxed with either, but will incur the transfer tax (ITP). This also varies

according to region, from highs of 10 per cent of the value of the sale in Catalonia, to lows of four in the Basque Country. There are different schemes for special circumstances like large families. Land registry and notaries will create extra costs and will be significantly higher for those with mortgages, who will incur all kinds of agency fees and demands.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man BEFORE I start this, I have to say that I like children. Well, let me qualify this, I like wellbehaved children. The ones I’m not too fond of are the ones that are allowed to do what they like, when they like, where they like, with parents that do not give a monkeys what inconvenience it causes others. Come to think of it it’s not the children that tick me off; it’s the parents that let two-plusyear-olds run round a restaurant screaming at each other. The parents sit there totally oblivious of the noise. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be having fun. They should be, but not at the expense of the other punters. Then all of a sudden, they decide they have had enough and start yelling at the child which then starts the poor little so and so crying and screaming and then mum or dad start shouting even more. Then the idle threats start. “If you don’t stop I’m sending you on the next plane back to England!” You can almost see the child

thinking “No you aren’t! I’m five... you have to come up with something more believable than that... but in meantime I’ll just carry on screaming.” I was in a supermarket recently and there was a woman with a five or six-year-old child and he was kicking off like a thing possessed and she was totally ignoring him. Obviously she had read somewhere that this is the correct way to deal with this situation, but I have to tell you, even though I’m no expert it’s not! At that point a woman walked up to her and said, “Excuse me, can you control your child or at least stop and ask him what’s wrong.” Well, all of a sudden it became quite apparent where this small person developed his temper because his mum went berserk at this woman telling her, in no uncertain terms, to mind her own business. But what did happen was the child, all of a sudden, stopped screaming to watch his mum take over the tantrum. I walked off and left them all but having a full blown punch up. My last plea is to the passengers on aircraft. It is not acceptable to let your little precious constantly kick the back of my seat and yes I will turn round and I will ask you to get them to stop and no it’s not their fault or mine it’s YOURS!

The penalties associated with infractions are mostly intended to be a deterrent, which is why repeat offenders in some cases face harsher penalties. Following on from our article last week, here are some more of the most common traffic offences, and the fines and sanctions for committing them: Offence: Failing to respect the priority of pedestrians Pedestrians are the most vulnerable of all road users and so need the most protection. Failing to respect the priority of pedestrians and the fact they take precedence will result in a fine and, depending on the potential risk to those pedestrians, the loss of four points. Fine: €200 Offence: Failing to give way. Junctions are dangerous places. Vehicles

which have priority and are already moving mix with other vehicles which try to join the flow but at generally lower speeds. Forcing any vehicle to deviate from its course, speed or direction creates a hazard which is dangerous. Failing to give way to another vehicle when that vehicle has priority and forcing them to brake or manoeuvre sharply will result in a fine and the loss of points. Fine: €200 and the loss of four points Offence: Driving on a motorway in a prohibited vehicle. Vehicles which are unable to reach a minimum threshold of speed are banned because if a slower vehicle is in the path of one moving at high speed there is less time to deal with that hazard. Driving on a motorway in a prohibited vehicle, such as a horse or hand drawn vehicle, a cycle or moped for example, will result in a fine. Fine: €200

What exactly is ‘plus valia’ tax? I read your article in a recent edition of the Euro Weekly regarding Spanish Capital Gains Tax, with your explanation for exemption for the over 65s who sell their principal residence. Surely the ‘Plus Valia’ Tax is Your logic is impeccable. The ‘plus valia’ tax is indeed very similar to the capital gains tax. We must dig a little deeper however. The national capital gains tax is charged on the profit made when a person sells an asset. If there is no

WE have all experienced the power of music and its ability to take us back to special places and key moments in our lives. I was returning from Alicante airport, having dropped off old friends who, until my visit to the UK last year, I had not clapped eyes on for 30-odd years. Theirs was an obscenely early morning flight and I found myself on the deserted N332 at half past stupid with just some light mist, a chunky Kit Kat and an all night radio station for company. 1968 was a helter skelter year, with deep ravines of depression that slowly turned into a new and hap-

By the time I reached Guardamar via Gary Puckett, Marmalade and The Doors, I was belting out the lyrics like a good ‘un. And when the intro to Jesamine by The Casuals oozed silkily out of the speakers, the metamorphosis was complete and I was back in the bar of The Boars Head or on the dance floor at the Thingumajig Club, reborn and thankful to be alive.

It is not a large operation, it does not have the power to initiate investigations, cannot arrest anyone, is not affiliated to Interpol (which has a completely different role) but is vital to the protection of member states against organised crime, money laundering and terrorism. Europol is the European Union’s law enforcement agency whose main goal is to help achieve a safer Europe for the benefit of all EU citizens. They do this by assisting the European Union’s Member States in their fight against serious international crime and terrorism. With almost 800 staff at headquar-

Problems still being faced SEVENTY-FIVE years ago, parts of the world had been at war for more than two years and the USA was about to align itself with the Allies following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Britain was still holding out against the Axis forces and there was heavy fighting in North Africa with Montgomery managing to defeat both the Italians and Rommel’s panzers in Libya before Britain moved on to Iraq, Syria and Iran to take possession of the oil fields there. During the same period, Greece and Yugoslavia were being invaded but at least the Allies had some wind of this because of the code breakers at Bletchley Park. In the meantime, in what turned out to be a major error, Hitler invaded Russia which was a major reason for his defeat, but it also led to the arms race and the Cold War. Although the timelines are slightly askew, there is certainly a feeling of déjà vu as here we are now, watching an invasion of Greece and many of the former Yugoslavian states albeit from a different direction and there has been continued fighting not only in Libya and Iraq but all over the Middle East. Relationships between Russia and Europe are beginning to break down and economies are suffering albeit for slightly different reasons. There is an old saying that, the more things change, the more they stay the same and we have to hope the current situation is going to resolve itself so rather than continue to stagger into one crisis after the other, politicians decide to try to work together.

The last weekend was all set to end dramatically following a big win for Bring It On over previously undefeated Los Agentes Secretos on the penultimate weekend, to go top of the table by two points for the first time in the competition. Bring It On had finished their fixtures but had set Los Agentes Secretos the difficult task of winning their last match, by a daunting target of 13 points. After six ends Los Agentes Secretos were narrowly ahead 9-8,

Benitachell Bowls Club WINTER League Report LAST week saw Benitachell Bowls Club Winter League playing at home up against local team El Cid. El Cid is very familiar with BBC’s players and the green, so, heads down and concentrate was the instructions of the day. Top rink this week was Alex Fisher, Terry Corner, Iris Gardiner and Bert McLean. A brilliant six shots on the 10th end gave the team a 10 shot advantage. The last five ends of the game (including a five on the 16th end) saw them with a final score of 24 - 9. Next up with a 22 - 12 score were Maggie Lawley, Jacquie Roberts, Mary Cockell and Tim Woodcock. The fourth end saw them take a superb five giving them the lead. They held on to this until the end, a tough and hard fought game. Skip Dave Roberts with Bob Cockell, Richard Gardiner and Christine Mawson had a ding-dong battle with either side only scoring one or two for most of the game, but a superb score of four followed by two singles secured the game for the team with a win of 16 - 9. Jeff Richards, Tony Lawley, Derek Mawson and Linda Richards had a solid game and despite a determined fight back by their opponents were able to finish in style with an 18 - 11 victory. Skip Dudley Davies and his team of Clive Langan, Mike Smith and Carol Davies had to fight hard to secure a draw 16 - 16. They were 7 - 11 down half way through but put up a tremendous fight winning six of the next seven ends. Going into the last end, although up three shots, were unable to hold off the El Cid team who took three shots to gain the draw. BBC Berleen team with Skip Harry Chick and a team of Vivian Erridge, Steve Griffin and Linda Smith were 5 - 6 shots down on the fifth end but they won seven of the next eight ends and scored 15 shots along the way taking a commanding and unassailable 13 shots. The El Cid team against them bowled well but were unable to stop the determination of Harry and his team who had a final score of 21 - 12. The teams achieved a magnificent 11 points from the 12 on offer. Well done one and all. As always El Cid were tough opponents and great company but it was a pleasure to take the points.

BBC Lions vs Javea Opals The Lions faced a team with a large number of key players from Javea. It was going to be a tough day but even after 12 ends, when down on three rinks and up on one rink by two shots, the Lions were not to be frightened off. Rink 1 saw our Lionesses playing against a very strong team of Tony Lloyd, Chris Evans and Nick Cole. After nine ends were 10 - 2 down but managed to recover in the second half taking fours on the 16th and 18th ends to win 20-14. Rink 3 saw Annie Jones, Janet and Trevor Neale playing Wendy Symonds, Ken Varney and Clive English . After four ends Trevor’s team was 6-1 up but unfortunately the team from Javea were in great form and the final score was 22-16 to Javea. Rink 6 saw Ron Hawker, Dave Browne and Fely Croft playing Derek Shaw, Brian Walker and Greg Spearing. A tight game with every end being fiercely contested. Final score 21-20. Well done a great game and a well deserved two points. Rink 7 saw Jinty Chamberlain, Rod Warnes and Jeff Richards playing Alan Hall, Matt Taylor and Gail Chick. After seven ends Jeff’s team was 12 4 up but this wasn’t to last too long as after 11 ends it was 12 - 11, and after 17 ends it was 17 all. This was a tough and good quality game but Jeff Richards played a blinding wood on the last end to win the game. Final score 20-17. The final shots and score was 77 to 73 and eight points to two. The challengers saw John Lapthorn, Peter Collins and Richard Chamberlain playing Steve Upton, Steve Lillley and Dick Baron. After going four nil down in three ends Richard’s team got a five on the fourth, a two on the fifth and a four on the sixth and seventh ends and never looked back. BBC Tigers vs FG Swallows A narrow but well deserved 67 to 63 shots victory gave the Tigers a 6 - 4 points win against a strong FG Swallows side. Although the Challenger team lost narrowly by a single shot, they did take 10 of the 18 ends. The Tigers Friendly side of Eddie Ansell, Alan Guest and skip Ernie Pope had a resounding 28 / 12 win.
