Denia destroys major drug ring BRITS arrested in record bust of dangerous narcotics

By Matthew Elliott A PAINSTAKING investigation saw a modest Denia courthouse join forces with the British National Crime Agency in a search and destroy mission to wipe out an elaborate international narcotic manufacturing syndicate operating in Marina Alta and Alicante. The sheer scale of the eventual bust hit global headlines as apt comparisons emerged with the cult American TV show â€˜Breaking Bad.â€™

More than 120 kilograms of Apaan were seized by National Police officers swooping on a rural home at an undisclosed location. The compound is an essential precursor to the manufacture of highly addictive amphetamines and was recently banned by a United Nations convention. It was the largest ever seizure of the drug on the European continent and has already had serious ramifications across the criminal underworld.

With a clandestine and modern laboratory unveiled as officers acted on secret intelligence, three Britons and a Dutch national were among the immediate arrests in Spain. Beginning in 2014 at the behest of the Court of Instruction Number Three Denia, the investigation has a long, tangled history as detectives pursued members of the organisation in the UK. It can only be hoped the discovery in Costa Blanca is not an omen of a similar scourge sweeping across Europe.

Bridge upgrade THE Ramellat bridge linking the centre of Campello with the Bonny district has a new lane for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge was extended to cross the AP7 ring road when it opened nine years ago, but no provision was made for those on foot or bicycles who had to share the road with traffic.

No stanchions for Montgo climbers SOME routes now impossible to scale By Linda Hall THE regional government plans to remove fixed stanchions from climbing routes on Montgo mountain. Climbing clubs from Gata, Pego, Calpe, Gandia and Valencia University as well as the Entorns associations have written and asked the Generalitat to reconsider. The decision was one-sided and taken without consulting the Femcv climbers’ federation, the letter claims. Lion King costume wins BENIDORM’S Carnaval Infantil (Children’s Carnival), attracted more than 2,500 people to the Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de Espana outside the town hall. The spectacular event, organised by the Association of Penyes in collaboration with the Department of Fiestas, attracted residents from all over the town, then treated them to fun and games.

A jury then voted on the best costumes. The winner was ‘The Lion King’. Second was ‘Pilo’, third ‘Cruella’ and fourth ‘Beehive’. In the groups category ‘The Searchers’ came first, with ‘Recycling’ second, ‘The Flintstones’ third and ‘Gumball Machine’ fourth. A total of 86 children entered the individual category, and 37 groups. There was also a very large group that marched but without registering for judging.

Occupancy up BENIDORM has recorded an average occupancy of 78 per cent during the second half of January, representing an increase of 6.2 points compared to 2015 and is the best figure recorded since 2001, according to Hosbec, the association for hoteliers. The average monthly occupancy was 74.8 per cent, which is 5.5 points higher than last year. Three-star hotels faired best (83.1 per cent), followed by two-star (81.5 per cent) and four-star (71.9 per cent). In terms of nationalities, 49.9 per cent were Spanish, 37.2 per cent British, 6.4 per cent from Belgium and 4.4 per cent from the Netherlands.

Benidorm Stats A TOTAL of 713 drivers were breathtested in 2015, compared to 617 in 2014. Night-time noise infringements were down from 24 to 16. The number of injuries in accidents was up from 364 to 402. Traffic violations were down from more than 22,000 to less than 21,000. The number of calls received by the police remained static at around 44,600.

Giving women free legal advice DENIA’S Municipal Legal Assistance for Women service (SAJ) assisted 552 women with free legal advice last year. Mostly they wanted information on their rights within the family, employment issues and civil and administrative law. The service assisted women of 49 nationalities, although the majority were Spanish and their general profile corresponded to married or divorced women aged between 31 and 60, with one or two children. The majority had primary education and were unemployed without benefits. Denia Town Hall’s Social Welfare department has been providing this service since December 2000. It is located in the Social Welfare building in Plaza Arxiduc Carles, 3 and is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am to 2pm. Prior appointments can be made on 965 784 680.

gust, not February. In a wet winter the Girona flows until the summer, but with no rain since early November it is already practically dry.

What little water there is has been dammed by a build-up of stones and seaweed deposited by the wind and waves. This occurs each summer and regular-

ly prompts protests from residents living or staying nearby in the Denia and Els Poblets urbanisations which are separated by the Girona.

Second supervised home A SECOND supervised home for people with mental disabilities has opened in Denia. The property, on Calle Montcada, has been provided by the town council and renovated and furnished thanks to a collaboration with ONCE, the Denia Sports Foundation, Maristas

school and donations from individuals. The refurbishment alone cost â‚Ź85,000. The sheltered housing will accommodate six men with mental disabilities, over 21 years, with a high degree of independence. Carers will be present 24 hours a day, every day.

MOTORCYCLING EVENT: Was watched by more than 1,000 people. By Keith Baker LA NUCIA has hosted the first round of the 2016 National Trial, organised by the Royal Motorcycling Federation of Spain, the Motorcycling Federation

of Valencia and Off Road Club La Nucia, in collaboration with the Department of Sports Town of La Nucia. A total of 120 bikers from across the country participated in the nine tests, which were watched by more

than 1,000 people. This is the eighth year La Nucia has hosted the event. The next round of the National Trial will be on February 28 in the Balearic town of Sant Joan, Mallorca.

Murcia has not approved its 2016 budget yet, but the proposed income tax rates range from 19.5% to 46%. The above rates only apply to general income (employment, pension, rental income, etc). Savings income is taxed at different rates. The 2016 rates are –

Savings income covers interest, dividends, income derived from life assurance contracts, purchased annuity income and capital gains on the sale or transfer of assets. Wealth tax Wealth tax keeps being extended and remains in place for fiscal year 2016. Spanish residents pay wealth tax on the value of their worldwide assets as at 31st December. The general state rates rise progressively from 0.2% to 2.5% (0.25% to 3.12% in Comunidad Valenciana). There are however reductions available, ranging from €700,000 (reduced to €600,000 in Comunidad Valenciana from 1st January 2016) to €2m, depending on whether you own your home and if you are single or a married couple. In Murcia the rates and exemptions are

the same as the state ones. This is a tough tax for wealthy residents, but steps can be taken to limit it. Succession tax There have been no changes to succession tax this year. How damaging this tax is depends on whom your beneficiaries are (rates, allowances and exemptions vary according to how they are related to you), how much the inheritance is and how much they are worth. There is no blanket exemption between spouses in Spain. UK nationals need estate planning to cover both Spanish succession tax and UK inheritance tax. Form 720 Do not forget that Modelo 720 needs to be submitted by 31st March, reporting on the assets you owned in 2015 if you were resident in Spain. You need to declare all overseas assets worth over €50,000. If you have submitted this form before, you only need to report again if the value of an asset increased by more than €20,000, or you sold an asset or closed an

account, or you obtained a new asset. Although the European Commission is investigating whether Modelo 720 (the disproportionate penalties and lack of statute of limitations) infringes on EU law, you still need to file your form as usual, at least for the time being. Altea companies for pipe work, caused the town hall to issue a decree on cessation of work on natural gas pipe installation this week. This decision will remain “until the damage is repaired and the debt is paid to the companies of the people,” said the councillor for Infrastructure and

Works, Roque Ferrer. Wo r k h a s b e e n c a r r i e d out in different areas of the town, “although most of the time they have left a trail of damage in the streets and plazas of Altea that have not been repaired,” according to the councillor. They have also failed to repaint road markings.

CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL: A jury chose the best costume. LAST week 150 children enjoyed the ‘Carnaval Infantil,’ which was organised this year by the Penya Els Socarrats and the Department of Celebrations for the town of La Nucia.

The fun started in Placa Major, where the children posed in their costumes for photos. After some food and games a jury chose the best costume. The winner was Paula Llorens Carrion, dressed as the Queen of Hearts.

Woman assaults husband A SEVENTY-YEAR-OLD woman has been ordered to attend a psychological unit in San Juan after assaulting h e r 6 9 - y e a r- o l d h u s b a n d with scissors. The National Police received a call to the home in Calle Rigel de Alicante, warning that a man had suffered cuts to his face and hands, so they arrested the accused. Doctors who examined the woman found her to be suffering from a mental disorder.

Stair works WORK has begun on the exterior stairs of CEIP La Ermita school in Villajoyosa. The problem was highlighted during an inspection in November last year, when they were identified as being so deteriorated that an accident might occur.

Seven arrested SEVEN suspected members of a terrorist cell were arrested in the Valencian Community and Ceuta. The men were of Syrian, Jordanian and Moroccan origin although five had Spanish nationality. They were detained in Crevillente, L’Alqueria d’Asnar, Muro, Alcoy and Alicante as well as Onteniente (Valencia) and Ceuta. They are accused of sending container-loads of arms, cash, electrical equipment, transmitters and explosives’ precursors camouflaged as humanitarian aid to Iraq and Syria. The dismantled cell also laundered money to finance the jihadi cause, the Interior ministry revealed. The arrests came not long after a video warning that Daesh “has not forgotten Cordoba, Toledo and Xativa.” Asked if these threats should be taken seriously when he recently visited the Betera (Valencia) Nato base, acting Minister of Defence Pedro Morenes said he had no doubts about it.

Benefit to raise funds for Anemone THERE will be exhibitions of dance and gymnastics By Keith Baker A GALA is to be held this Sunday (February 14) in L’Alfas del Pi in aid of Anemone, the support group for women with breast cancer. There will be exhibitions of Taekwondo, Aikido, Dance and Gymnastics by local clubs. There will also be a raffle, with many attractive prizes including dinners, hotel stays, courses and spa circuits, all donated by local businesses. The gala is the initiative of sisters Noemi and Alba Marcos, and has the support of the council.

It will be held from 10.30am to 1pm at the Centre Court Pavilion Pau Gasol, L’Alfas del Pi. Tickets are €5 and can be purchased at the headquarters of Anemone, at the Casa de Cultura de l’Alfas del Pi, through the Club de Gimnasia Ritmica (Rhythmic Gymnastics Club) and by calling 667 300 972. “All the money raised from the sale of tickets will be donated to Anemone. We also plan to have collection tins at the event, in case anyone wants to expand their donation,” said Alba.

Rapist jailed for 24 years A SLOVAKIAN man has been jailed for 24and-a-half years for sexual assault, false imprisonment, burglary, and robbery. The attack took place over several hours in the home of a woman in San Juan de Alicante in August 2013. He had pleaded guilty to the charges. Several weeks before the attack the man

had been working in the victim’s home reforming the bathroom, having been contracted by a well-known company. The woman’s father became suspicious when he couldn’t reach his daughter by phone and went to the home. When he arrived there was a scuffle, but the assailant escaped.

February march will be a memorable event THE Cami del Peix march takes place on February 27 and 28, and promises to be a memorable event. The march is organised by the Asociacion Cultural Hispania Romana and the eight municipalities of the route, in conjunction with Club Esportiu Sendes i Muntanyes of Villajoyosa and the Camino de Santiago de Benidorm-Villajoyosa, and members of the public are welcome to tag along.

The Cami del Peix is one of the oldest preserved routes in Spain.

During the stops the marchers will be happy to interact with the public. Starting from Villajoyosa early on Saturday 27 at the military camp (castra) by

Cami del Peix, close to the Valor Chocolate factory, the march sets off towards the first stop at Ermita, where there will be a ceremony. The second stop will be at the church square in Orxeta, then on to Relleu (where the marchers will spend the night in the sports centre). In the afternoon, the march will visit Sella and Penaguila. On Sunday morning the march will continue towards Alcoy, through Benifallim and Torremanzanas. At 1pm the procession will make its entry via the Canalejas Viaduct to the town hall, accompanied by the participants of a tour organised by the Museu dâ€™Alcoi. Each of these stops will be half an hour long, during which time the marchers will be happy to interact with the public, and explain their equipment, clothing and footwear.

Taiwan visitors STUDENTS applauded as they entered the auditorium By Keith Baker A GROUP of 18 university students from Taiwan, accompanied by several teachers, went to see the Teulada Moraira Auditorium during a study visit in Spain. They visited architecturally interesting buildings in Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante and Valencia. The Teulada Moraira Auditorium was selected because of the unique location and the incredible integration of light.

Furthermore, the work of the designer of the Auditorium, Francisco Mangado, is well known to the students. The auditorium is also well known for the indirect light in the exhibition hall, the pristine structure and the fantastic sea view. Many of t he st udent s appl auded as they entered the auditorium in order to appreciate the acoustics, and all were impressed by the architecture and its project i on of t he Medi t er r anean Sea and i t s light.

Trial postponed THE trial of former mayor of Orxeta Vicente Llinares had to be postponed until May 12, as he has just undergone surgery. He is accused of corruption for allegedly allowing the installation and activity of an illegal concrete plant. The land for the plant consisted of two plots that were classified as undeveloped land for special protection of the mountain. The company did not have any licence for the activity, though it hoped to obtain one in the near future, “according to the mayor,” said the prosecutor, who is calling for one year in jail and a 10-year disqualification from public office for incidents dating back to late 1999. It is not the first postponement of this case. In November 2015 it was suspended due to the illness of a lawyer for the prosecution.

Officer saves life of British man CONCERNED neighbour called the emergency services By Keith Baker GUARDIA CIVIL officers were called to the home of a British man in Javea by a concerned neighbour. When they arrived they saw the man lying on the floor through a rear window. H a v i n g c a l l e d 11 2 they forced an entry and set about resuscitating the man until the medics arrived. It was later established that the victim had entered into a hypoglycaemic coma.

A new use for an old building OCCUPATIONAL Training Centre in Alfas del Pi will offer a range of training and employment programmes By Keith Baker SEPTEMBER will see the opening of an Occupational Training Centre in the old annexe No 3 CEIP Santisi-

Foreign residents’ meetings arranged MAYOR of Finestrat, Juan Francisco Perez Llorca, has arranged two meetings with local non-Spanish residents, in conjunction with Victoria Curtis, the Councillor for Residents of Other Nationalities (RON). The objective of these RON meetings is to open up the local administration to people from other countries who have chosen to live in Finestrat. A previous meeting was deemed successful. Victoria Curtis said: “We were able to establish a very personal and close relationship with our neighbours. And we believe that the time is right to repeat the call for local government to bring together our residents, regardless of where they were born.” In that first meeting, attended by more than 50 people, the residents had an opportunity to share concerns on matters including cleaning, waste collection, rehabilitation of building facades in the old town, security and dealing with animal droppings, whilst the council was able to explain their measures to facilitate integration. The two meetings will be held on Tuesday, February 16. The first at 9.30am at the Llar del Pensionista (Casa de Cultura), and the second at 6pm in the Centro Multiusos de la Cala (Avenida Marina Baixa). Going beyond taunting in the classroom or violence in the playgrounds, it is estimated that in the province of Alicante around 13,000 schoolchildren under the age of 17 are or have been victims of bullying at school. From the Valencian Association Against Bullying (Avalcae) it is considered that around 6 per cent of students are victims but have not reported the issue. The Ministry of Education has also confirmed that bullying is not just limited to

compared with 70 the previous year. Cases of violence in the classrooms have also

doubled, but many say the problem lies in the issue being recognised and dealt with and is not just attributed to children being children and it being a ‘child thing.’ The issue has been highlighted as the words of an 11-year-old boy touched and shocked a nation. In a note to his parents he said he could ‘not bear to go to school and there is no way out’ before jumping out of a fifth floor window where he lived in Leganes. The case is not the only one of bullying leading to suicide. According to the World Health Organisation and the United Nations, each year around the world approximately 600,000 young people aged between 14 and 28 kill themselves as a result of some form of bullying. In Spain bullying affects 4 per cent of children in primary and secondary schools. Alicante Province is taking note of the severity of cases which has meant that in just two months 50 pupils have been expelled from school.

Animal carnival THE Sant Rafel school in La Nucia celebrated ‘Carnestoltes dels Animals’ (Carnival of Animals) in grand style. For several weeks they have been preparing costumes and masks with the help of teachers and volunteers. Each school year had chosen a different animal to represent. The costumed children then marched around the playground in front of their delighted families. Three-year-olds represented rabbits, four-year-olds canaries and five-year-olds crabs. The first year primary pupils chose characters from the film Madagascar (hippo, zebra and giraffe), the second year Dalmatians, the third year tropical birds, the fourth year penguins and the fifth and sixth years jellyfish.

He had presented finds in the past but it was time to share all his discoveries with the public, said El Pegoli. He has accumulated an important number of amphorae, vessels and flagons, many corresponding to the period between the fifth and third centuries BC. All were discovered underwater and many were discov-

ered when El Pegoli was diving for sea urchins and octopus. Others were purchased from fishing boats that found them snared in their nets. A selection of El Pegoli’s donations were presented recently to the public at the Archaeological Museum in an event attended by Denia’s mayor Vicent Grimalt, Culture councillor Rafa Carrio, museum director Josep Antoni Gisbert, and El Pegoli himself. Attention centred on a white Carrara marble head, which El Pegoli found 28 years ago and whose exis-

tence he revealed only recently. Josep Antoni Gisbert identified the head as the work of a neo-classic French or Italian sculptor and dated it at between 1790 and 1820. Examining the part of the coast where El Pegoli found it would probably provide more clues to its history and origins, the museum director said. Vicent Grimalt and Rafa Carrio thanked El Pegoli for his generosity in wanting to share his treasures with the public, and urged other collectors to follow his lead.

This could affect the constitutional separation of state and religion, Simon claimed. The Principal Board of Brotherhoods and Societies reminded Simon and the corporation that the city has 8,600 of

these associations, and the processions are not purely religious occasions, but are cultural events which attract tourism. The municipal band will also be present in other religious events like Corpus Christi, city hall has confirmed. In contrast the musicians will no longer participate in the formal announcement of the Hogueras fiestas’ bullfights.

Hunters’ meat could go to charity THE Valencian Community’s Hunting Federation hopes to donate meat and game to charity. Meat obtained during competitions and culls could be sent to social dining rooms and non-government organisations, said the federation’s president Vicente Segui. The Federation board has now made contact with the public administrations and

meetings will follow with representatives from the regional departments of Agriculture, Environment and Health. These will advise on the steps to be followed when donating the meat for public consumption, Segui explained. Private donations, especially of small game like rabbits, are already habitual, Segui said, and are given to family and friends.

Tax cuts for Callosa growers CALLOSA D’EN SARRIA has cut taxes affecting agricultural activity. “Agriculture is going through a tricky moment and we want to do all we can to protect it,” said Callosa’s Mayor Josep Saval. The tax on building work has been reduced from 4 to 0.5 per cent, and the building licence tax has been lowered from 1.2 per cent to 0.5 per cent, although there will be a minimum €10 charge. Both of these taxes apply to installing greenhousing, windbreaks, terracing and irrigation systems, earthworks and roadworks.

The findings, based on investigations carried out last year, were published in Science of the Total Environment magazines by Maria Jesus Andres-Costa, Ursula Escriva, Vicente Andreu and Yolanda Pico. It is possible to estimate alcohol consumption by measuring the amount of ethyl sulphate, a stable biomarker that is eliminated in urine.

Another hitch for Sidi San Juan hotel AUCTION held up again due to missing signature By Linda Hall PLANS to auction the Sidi San Juan hotel have been obstructed by another obstacle. The emblematic five-star hotel outside Alicante City where Princess Diana once stayed closed in 2011 after the owners began bankruptcy proceedings. Plans to sell the Sidi late that year came to nothing after the failure of Banco de Valencia, one of its principal creditors.

Prospective buyers have since come and gone and the hotel is in the hands of receivers. The hoped-for auction was delayed because of a signature missing from the paperwork. Sidi Española has a €31 million mortgage debt with the BBVA and Banco de Valencia, which was later absorbed by La Caixa. Investors who have expressed interest in the hotel include a housing cooperative backed by businessman Cristobal Navarro, a Yecla industrial group and a foreign investment fund.

Volunteers training to combat forest fires L’ORXA is forming a volunteer fire brigade. Forest fire is a constant threat in the heavily-wooded inland area and the nearest fire station is 32 kilometres away along winding mountain roads. “The volunteers will at least be able to

contain a fire until firefighters reach the scene,” said L’Orxa’s mayor Arnaldo Dueñas. They will receive basic training, he explained, and equipment would be provided by the Consorcio de Bomberos.

DUE to the amount of negative reaction coming from the general public in Spain, the ombudsman has decided to look at the actions being taken by banks to introduce charges for the use of ATM machines by non-customers. According to a royal decree which became law at the start of 2016, banks may pass on charges they receive from the bank holding the account of a noncustomer who uses one of their machines. Due to loose wording in the law, some banks appear to be profiting from the charges and this is what is to be investigated with the possibility of the law being amended.

Ofgem to investigate Age Uk’s gas and electricity promotions CHARITY appeared to be recommending a deal that was not the cheapest By John Smith A SHOCKING report by The Sun newspaper in the UK suggests that a charity specifically set up to support those who are elderly, has been benefitting by promoting expensive gas and electricity tariffs in return for payment by E.ON, and this is now to be investigated by official body Ofgem. It appears that on its website the charity recommends a particular tariff, but investigators suggest this was not the cheapest tariff offered by the company, and those who followed the charity’s advice could have been £245 (€343) worse off in 2015 than if they had taken E.ON’s cheapest rate. l i on ( €7.8 m i l l i on) f r om t he arrangement in commission. E.ON, whilst admitting there was a cheaper deal, explained that one was a two-year deal, whilst the other was a one-year deal only. The company also said some people preferred to fix the price for as long as possible and that consumers could always switch deals at no additional cost. The fact remains, however, that the charity did appear to be recomm endi ng a deal t hat was not t he cheapest to pensioners in return for a financial advantage, and this is why Ofgem will undertake an investigation into their activities.

Fall in oil prices continues to push economies closer to breaking point THERE is no question that oil is pushing economies almost to breaking point at the moment, with the massive fall in wholesale prices caused by the slowdown of the Chinese economy in particular. Fears that Iran will flood the market has meant that the mega rich economies, such as Saudi Arabia and global oil companies are losing income and shares continue to fall. Even though petrol pump prices in Spain haven’t really reflected the real fall in price, unlike the UK where prices have plummeted, the oil giants such as Repsol are writing off huge amounts on their accounts, and this is also reflected in the number of job losses being experienced within the industry. BP has suffered its worst losses in 20 years and is to cut 3,000 employees directly, plus a further 4,000 people in third party jobs, and with a negative result for 2015 of €6 billion, there is downturn of nearly €10 billion on the previous year. ROYAL DUTCH SHELL: Company has confirmed they will cut 10,000 jobs after a steep fall in profit. for 13 years, although it still managed to make a profit of €3.4 billion down from €17 billion the previous year.

It is still pushing forward with the takeover of the BG exploration group at a cost of €47 billion, which it intends to fund in part by the sale of

assets. However, investors are now questioning whether this is a prudent investment with the alltime low in oil prices.

HOW refreshing it was to tune into Sky news this week and be confronted by the two bubbly black presenters, Philip Butah and Gillian Joseph. These two young people, at the top of their chosen profession, are both articulate and entertaining. What a wonderful example to the hordes of other young blacks, who constantly blame the reason for their lack of success or failures in life on the colour of their skin. Well, I’m sorry, but ‘cause I’m black’ simply doesn’t hack it any more. Even when many black people actually are successful, they still complain about racist bias. Prime examples of this antiquated attitude were the actors involved in the recent Oscars. Whinging and moaning, these extremely wealthy and spoiled divas queued up to complain that there weren’t enough black actors included in the nominations this year. They

blamed the Academy and its members of ostracising black people on purpose. What a load of complete codswallop. For heaven’s sake the president of the Academy is himself black! The true problem this year was there were no black performers or movies that merited an award. You can’t base an award on the colour of someone’s skin. This is the type of reverse racism that stirs up all the trouble in the first place. If, as was suggested, there were not enough scripts available for black performers, for goodness sake get your heads down and write some. There are a whole multitude of talented black script writers and authors out there. It’s up to them to even up the balance, if indeed an unbalance even exists. For God’s sake grow up all of you. Just cast your mind over the black success rate of the past few generations. The finest athletes in the world. The world top racing driver. The highest paid TV personality in history. The finest female tennis players. A golfing number one. The list goes on and on, right up to the president of the USA himself. Talent, perseverance and luck are the differ-

Leapy, having just read your article I couldn’t agree more GOOD morning Leapy, Having just read your article on immigration I couldn’t agree more. I moved to Benalmadena Pueblo nearly a year ago to escape the constant barrage of immigration horror stories we are inundated with, murder, Daesh, and God knows what. It plays on your mind and is very unsettling. Our government have completely underestimated the huge influx of foreign migration and the breeding they also produce. Anarchy on the streets of the UK is coming, sooner rather than later tensions will break. I am more than happy to now be in my own world in Spain, I feel safe. As a former commuter to London from Brighton I certainly wouldn’t now, it’s terrible to feel that way. In some parts of London ‘sharia law’ signs adorn lamp posts. Why is that allowed??? I ran a Bentley garage in Kensington. We put an advertisement up and were written to and made to remove it by Kensington Council with an enforcement notice. Our idiotic government are too scared to oppose these people. And now it’s way too late to save it. I fear for the UK now, it is already a Muslim state. Little Arrows

MY partner and I often walk our dogs along the banks of the Guadalmansa River, a local beauty spot popular with hikers and cyclists near Cancelada, Estepona. On Saturday we were dismayed and horrified to discover that a large pile of rubbish and unwanted household items including a child’s pushchair and a sofa, had been dumped at the popular picnic and barbecue area. I searched the rubbish in vain to find anything that could identify the culprits. Fly-tipping is a problem in many local scenic spots and I hope the public will help identify and track down people who behave in such an anti-social way. There are many ways in which people can dispose of unwanted items within the law, and without spoiling peoples’ enjoyment of the countryside. They can contact their town hall for information. Fear for the future DEAR Leapy, I have read your articles many times and always enjoy them. You talk so much common sense and say what so many people feel. WHAT happens when you have been in a relationship for a long time, and the person that stole your heart 15 or 20 years ago no longer looks like the package you married? Sound harsh? Well not really, it’s one of those subjects that people don’t like to discuss. How do you feel when the person you married is no longer the slim, healthy fit person that you fell in love with? Whilst you on the other hand are consistently taking the effort and care to maintain your early 20’s weight. You could say I am being shallow and that love is not just about appearance, after all who cares about the love handles and few extra fat rolls right? However, the way I see it is this. When I met my partner, he was handsome, fit, healthy and generally in great shape. This of course was important to me on many levels. I loved him for many reasons, but being with someone that took

care of their health was of great importance. Some 15 years later, not much has changed. He likes to go out on his mountain bike and attend the gym regularly. He enjoys big meals, as do I. Sometimes honesty really is the best policy, tact of course is very important, but I have found that often people need to hear the harsh stuff, and this in turn, shunts them into action. At weekends he often likes to try a few of the different beers that the supermarkets have to offer. He knows when he has overindulged or packed on a few kilos, as do I. However, we have an unwritten agreement to maintain a healthy, attractive body for ourselves and for each other. So my question is, if your partner asked you one day, does my stomach look big in this? What would you say? Would you lie to them to avoid hurting their feelings, or would you be honest and tell it like it is? My next question to you is, how do you feel? SPECIALIST: Doctor Luis Perez Belmonte. This week we have asked the GP for more information about antibiotics, prescriptions and the possible side effects.

- I’ve been prescribed antibiotics for a throat infection but am a bit worried about taking them. It seems in Spain antibiotics are prescribed for just about everything, and I have heard that this is not good as excessive use causes immunity meaning they’re no good when really needed. Is this true? - Most infections of this type are caused by viruses, meaning antibiotics are not required and treatment consists of targeting the symptoms with medication for pain, fever, etc. Occasionally doctors will prescribe antibiotics to prevent a bacterial infection or because we believe the initial infection was caused by bacteria, which need antibiotic treatment. It is true that sometimes doctors prescribe more than are necessary. This can lead to bacteria devel-

oping resistance to certain antibiotics, but this occurs through repeated use over long periods of time, rather than occasional use. - I’m also worried about side effects. Last time I took them they upset my stomach. - Stomach upsets and nausea are the most common side effects. Generally symptoms are bearable and patients are advised to adapt their diet to avoid aggravating stomach problems. More serious side effects can sometimes lead to the medication having to be suspended. - Do I have to take them all or can I stop once the pain and fever go? - Once you start a course of antibiotics, unless you suffer very severe side effects you should complete it, even if symptoms disappear within 24 hours.

Early rising can make you slimmer A STUDY has found that people who went to bed earlier and got up earlier in the morning, tended to be thinner than those who go to bed later. The results came from a study that analysed the DNA of self-professed ‘night owls’ and ‘morning larks’. It also discovered that those who woke earlier were less prone to depression and less likely to suffer from insomnia. Almost 90,000 people were asked if they were naturally a morning or a night person, and had their DNA analysed, which revealed 15 genes that were linked to a person being a ‘lark’ or an ‘owl’. A preference for mornings increased the older someone was, with more than twice as many of the over-60s describing themselves as morning types compared to those aged under 30. Women were more likely to enjoy mornings than men. The study by a genetic testing company in California, USA, suggested that a gene involved in body weight also affects whether someone is at their best in the morning or at night.

Annual panto is a success DANCE school The Broadway Performance Academy presented their annual pantomime last week, to great acclaim. Held at the Casa de Cultura in L’Alfas del Pi, their performance of ‘Alice’s Wonderland’ captivated the audience with their blend of singing, dancing and acting. A particular ‘Ahhhh’ factor was the sight of the little ones some as young as three - gambolling across the stage. There was also a raffle, the proceeds from which were to be donated to MABS and EMAUS.

So much so that owner Kevin Noble took the decision to move to much larger premises just next door. Kevin comes from a brewery background, having been a European brand development manager for a brewery for eight years, based in the UK, but travelling throughout Europe Kevin discovered La Cala whilst making visits to his father, who moved there some 10 years ago. estrat Clearly with this much passion and enthusiasm Kevin isn’t going to rest on his laurels. He has plans for expansion, but he doesn’t intend to plant a carbon copy of Winnie’s elsewhere. With his strong family ties apparent it was no surprise to learn that he intends his next project to be in honour of his grandfather, who died recently. This will be completely different, though. On the basis of what his grandad was - a big man and the life and soul of the party - a rib steak shack will be appropriate and most likely located in Albir or Altea. Fresh, local produce will, of course, be compulsory. Talking of his patrons, Kevin stressed how supportive they have been. There’s a real mix of nationalities too, with Norwegian, Dutch, Belgian, German and Spanish regulars as well as British. Kevin has a love of languages, which no doubt helps all nationalities feel at home here. So, the many draws of La Cala Finestrat have been joined by another - Winnie’s Bar and Restaurant! SO far the early winter weather has been ideal, except for a couple of chilly hours some mornings, for not only progressing speedily with the annual winter cutback, but also to sit out in the garden for breakfast and lunch, to take an occasional rest with a refreshing beverage. So what can a good garden contribute to your enjoyment of your life in Spain? In view of the limits on size of article, I do this as a checklist. 1. All round interest from plants and features, and the presence of birdlife. 2. Sensible exercise, if you delegate the heaviest jobs to a

OUTDOORS: Re-establish contact with nature. gardener or odd-job man as you age. 3. Gets you outdoors to reestablish contact with nature after, in many cases, an office or car driven lifestyle. 4. Summer shade and shelter from scorching winds. 5. Winter sun and shelter from chilly winds. Recently it

has been possible to strip off and sunbathe in the garden to build up vitamin D reserves. 6. Natural aromatherapy from the leaves and flowers of a variety of plants. 7. Attractive colour all the year round, a kaleidoscope of greens being the predominant year-round colour effect.

8. Comfortable seats with good views, where it becomes natural to rest and switch off from the rush of modern lives. 9. Productive offering seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers and leaves throughout the year. Each being ecologically grown and providing a range of beneficial natural

vitamins, minerals and fibres. With respect to this, my book ‘Living well from the garden Mediterranean Style’, will help you decide what is best to plant, harvest and eat or drink, as healthy alternatives to imported tea or coffee and some so-called energy drinks. To maximise the benefit of eating and drinking anything that you grow in the garden, do ensure that you use no chemical products. Use either nothing or just natural sprays and dustings to solve any insecticide or fungal problems that occur. If you still have problems locally in obtaining eco products,

have a look at the websites of Trabe or Neudorf and buy by mail order. 11. By going or staying eco, educating neighbours if necessary, and having thick hedges one can enjoy clean unpolluted air, one of the important ingredients of a traditional pre-expat Mediterranean diet. 12. Antonio Candela Sanchis bought a run-down surgery and set about building it up into the state-of-the-art multi-disciplined facility now relied upon by so many locals for the well-being of their pets. The vision for the clinic is to provide the very best resources all in one place. They have all the technology required for any kind of surgery, and as a result have become very popular with the local international residents, particularly Scandinavians. The clinic covers all aspects of pet welfare, with a specialist in traumatology (operating on bones) and an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) on the team as well as a nurse, but any specialist that is required can be brought to the clinic. Such are their skills that they also assist other practices in the area. The treatments here aren’t confined to the physical. They have a behavioural specialist too, who attends the clinic once a week, but who can also visit the home of a client if necessary. Pets’ appearances haven’t been ignored, as there are two hairdressers available to ensure he or she remains well groomed. Another specialist at the practice is a physiotherapist,

Toni explains that post-operative care regimes can sometimes be difficult for the pet owners to follow, so the physiotherapist can help enormously. This is not an emergency clinic, but they will answer the phone 24 hours a day for emergencies, and can either advise over the phone, or if necessary meet at the surgery out of hours, thereby ensuring complete peace of mind for their

clients. If a client does need to call out of hours, they’re clearly going to be upset and keen to get their pet’s problem solved as quickly as possible. So it’s comforting to know they won’t just speak to a clerk, but to vet Toni himself, ensuring they get the help and advice they need straight away. These figures are also good news for those of you selling your property this year. The figures show that more and more banks are offering mortgages again after many years of non-availability, and this will help drive more property sales in Spain this year. Actually, foreign buyers looking for a mortgage have the additional option of taking out an extra mortgage on their property in their own

percentage of the property’s costs, which is proving to be attractive to buyers who only need to pay a small deposit. On resale properties the seller can arrange for the owners existing mortgage to be taken over by the buyer, but normally the buyer finds their own new bank mortgage, which will base the mortgage amount on a bank valuation of the property. What is important is that mortgages in Spain are again readily available at very low interest rates, making 2016 the ideal time to buy, especially for buyers who have been saving their deposits. EXPERTS have identified Spain as a crucial country for British buyers to keep an eye on in 2016, with the country offering a surprising array of low cost properties without the defects usually associated with bottom of the barrel prices. Second-hand homes WEBSITE claims one can be bought for less than the average yearly salary of €22,697 By Sam Croft THE National Institute of Statistics calculates that the average yearly salary in Spain is €22,697. Having this data as a point of reference, the property website pisos.com claims that a second-hand home can be bought for less than that amount. That means that even though a recent study has indicated that it is currently necessary to devote six years worth of salary to the purchase of a residence, it can in fact be done in less than a year. If one isn’t too picky, that is. Of course in reality, flats this cheap are few and far between. Only 0.39 per cent of the offers on pisos.com are featured for less than this price, although the percentage is slightly higher in some provinces, with a hefty 2 per cent of the properties in Teruel falling into this range. It goes without saying that flats or residences on the market might require more than their fair share of fixing up. But for DIY lovers looking for a project or a bit of peace and quiet, some of these places could be just what the doctor ordered. General director of pisos.com, Miguel Angel Alemany said: “The buyer who opts for these residences, is usually looking for a second residence or a retirement residence in some rural area in the interior, with the aim of reforming it in his or her spare time.”

Taking the helm FORMER richest man in the world and frequent inhabitant of the Forbes’ top 10, Carlos Slim is set to launch a takeover bid for the massive Spanish infrastructures firm FCC. The Mexican billionaire owns the Inversora Carso group, which is currently the main shareholder with a 27.43 per cent stake. Shares at FCC, hit hard by the recession, have already jumped upon hearing the news, hoping that the gravitas of the telecommunications tycoon, combined with a recovering property market, will raise the company’s fortunes. Founded in Barcelona but based in Madrid, FCC is a major player in the Spanish property market in both the real estate and construction sectors, with a variety of renowned projects to their name, both domestically and internationally. The elusive billionaire philanthropist has been quietly conquering a variety of Spanish markets, but his recent

foray into real estate will send ripples through the sector. With news that construction permits across Spain are increasing, the sight of cranes and workers across the nation may soon again resume its pre-crisis commonality.

Rental prices up everywhere but Basque Country PROPERTY rental prices went up in all of the regions of Spain in 2015, except for Basque Country, where they fell by 0.3 per cent, according to an annual end of the year analysis carried out by real estate website Fotocasa. It is the first time that residential rental prices in 16 of the autonomous communities in Spain went up in the same year, since the website began to conduct the study nine years ago. The price of renting in Spain reached its all-time historical high in May of 2007, with an amount of €10.12 a month per square metre. Since then, with the crisis, it has accumulated a drop of 30.7 per cent.

I begrudge paying for a carrier bag Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man SAD news this week, my carrier bag for life has passed on after a very short but happy existence. It was partly my fault because I continually overloaded it. That’s because for some odd reason, I, like hundreds of others I have observed, totally begrudge paying for a carrier bag at the supermarket checkout. I have often witnessed people coming out like they are competing in that old TV show from the 50s/60s called Crackerjack. Did you know that not all shops have to charge for the carrier bags? For instance, all the little supermarkets don’t have to charge. It’s only places with 250 employees or more so there’s a few that are nicking a bit of profit. Here’s a good one. I decided to buy a new TV so I went and had a look at one in one of the very big electrical stores here. I found one I liked and did the deal and had to buy some extra cables and some other bits. I get to the checkout and pay for the TV and arrange de-

livery. Now this was a 55 inch curved screen, so it was a nice few quid, well euros actually. The girl on the checkout asks if I want a bag for the other items. Of course I do. How else am I going to get the stuff to the car as I explain that my juggling skills aren’t that good? She says, “That will be 5 cents.” “What?” I’ve just spent all this money on this TV and the cables and they want to charge me for a carrier bag! Surely it’s not only me. Well I know it’s not, because I observe nearly every person at the different tills are going out with unbagged goods. Just give me a bag, hide the cost any way you like but don’t tell me it’s an extra. I know it’s all about saving the planet and the money is meant to go to charities, but on both counts I’ve checked and neither is entirely true. There are some peculiar rules too. Did you know, for example, they are not required to charge for a bag containing an unwrapped blade and unwrapped loose seeds? But if you add a box of cornflakes then they would have to charge. Uncooked fish and fish products, uncooked meat, poultry and their products don’t get charged for. So next time I go shopping I’m going to buy a flick knife, a fish and some animal body parts… and get a free carrier bag!!

GPS while driving RULES and laws aim to make the roads a safer place AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

DRIVERS: Are not allowed to touch GPS while driving. Offence: Failing to maintain the proper position in the vehicle. This can refer to passengers with their feet on the dashboard, drivers with their arms out the window, or any other situation where proper posture is not maintained. This is because in the event of impact, the injuries sustained are considerably worse. Fine: €80. Offence: Using radar detectors. Some GPS devices have information which tells you where fixed radars and cameras are located, as this information is provided freely by the DGT with the intention of slowing traffic in these areas, and therefore devices which give this sort of fixed data information are permitted. Fine: €200 and the loss of three points.

ALL traffic rules and laws are aimed at making the roads a safer place. The penalties associated with infractions are mostly intended to be a deterrent, which is why repeat offenders may face harsher penalties. Here are a few of the most common traffic offences, and the fines and sanctions for committing them. Offence: Programming your GPS when driving. It is perfectly legal to use GPS navigation devices in your vehicle, but you are not allowed to touch them when you are driving because it distracts you. Set your journey before you leave. If you go wrong, most devices will recalculate the route, so leave it alone until you are stopped safely. Fine: €200 plus the loss of three points.

Can properties pay the same? OUR urbanisation was formed 12 years ago. At our first community meeting we agreed that every house or apartment would pay the same urbanisation fee regardless of the size of the property. For 10 years every dwelling continued to pay the same amount. Some have a basement garage with a separate entrance for cars. Let’s define our terms. Properly, when a community of property owners is constituted, each property is assigned a ‘cuota de participación’ according to its size. If they are not all the same size, some will pay

Renault Captur: Not just another crossover ITS non-pretentiousness is its appeal THE smart-looking Renault Captur, albeit built on the underpinnings of the popular Clio, has been given a macho makeover so it stands taller in the urban jungle. Its striking styling has gone down well with the suburban dweller, who needs a practical run-around but craves a touch of the wide outdoors, and yet, is far too sensible for a crazy looking Cactus. Is the Captur then not just another of the so-called ‘crossovers’ I hear you ask? Well apparently not. Cars like the Nissan Qashqai, which started the current craze of crossovers, meaning cars that have the looks and beefy stature of a 4x4 with the more economical running gear of a family hatch, (a pretend off-roader in other words) do just that, pretend. However the Captur makes no such claims, nor does it want to go off road. Its non-pretentiousness is its appeal, and it appears to have created a market for this type of car, where the sales are racing ahead. The Captur won’t venture far off the tarmac but it looks as though it might, and it has a practical spin-off in a higher than normal driving position, and easier entry for those of more mature years.

Bentley announce that sales topped 10,000 cars in 2015 FOLLOWS record sales in South Korea, Japan and the Middle East THE luxury car-maker Bentley Motors sold more than 10,000 cars in 2015, and not for the first time, this makes it three years in a row. Bentley announced this week that it totalled more than 10,100 vehicles last year, following record sales in South Korea, Japan and the Middle East. The company also said that sales in North America helped it reach targets after taking delivery of 2,864 cars, (28 per cent of global deliveries). Bentley’s chairman and chief executive, Wolfgang Durheimer, said: “The positive Bentley Motors performance was supported by increases across key sales regions, and was driven by our continued commitment to invest in our products, people and network. We have worked hard to build a sustainable platform to enable long-term growth, and this will help deliver a strong 2016, the all-new Bentayga

Bentley has more than 4,000 employees at its Pyms Lane site, and recently announced plans to transform a field into a parking area as part of ongoing expansion plans. The move is part of an £840 million investment, which has already seen the creation of more than 1,000 jobs.

The Jaguar F-type SVR confirmed for 2016 JAGUAR’S new flagship F-type SVR has been confirmed to make its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show on March 1, and will go on sale in the summer. Both coupe and convertible versions will be up for grabs with both versions benefitting from more power than a standard F-type, as well as SVR-specific suspension, a titanium ex-

haust system, and an aggressive aero kit. The SVR’s supercharged 5.0-litre V8 will produce 567bhp and 516lb, which will propel either of these big cats from 0-62mph in 3.7sec, and in coupe form, the F-type SVR will hit 200mph. The convertible won’t be far behind, though, topping out at 194mph.

DEBUT: At the Geneva Motor Show on March 1.

John Edwards, MD of Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations centre, said: “The new F-TYPE SVR is the first series production Jaguar to be developed by Special Vehicle Operations. Captain’s Drive In Sponsored by the Captain THIS week the Warblers made the trip to Alenda Golf, which was in excellent condition for a Stableford Competition, and the first game under our incoming Captain David Knight. We had 29 playing members and one non-playing member, a favourite with the players (Wendy). They were all there supporting their captain on his special Drive In Day. Derek Gray organised a guess the distance of his first drive, and under a loud ovation he smashed it straight down the middle to a huge distance of 177 yards into a gale force wind! There were three winners who got the distance correct and they were Jan Wilson, Sheila Dindar and Paddy Kenmore. Thank you Derek for making it a fun start. Division two had the top scorer this week with the in form David Edwards (Hcp 26) in first place with 37 points, runner up went to Derek Gray (Hcp 21.4) on 33 points and in third place was Glyn Walters (Hcp 25.1) with 32 points. Division one this week saw a three-way tie on 35 points, winning on count back and in first place was David French (Hcp 10.9), runner up was Fred

Benitachell Bowls Club GREAT winning run continues TIGER vs JAVEA QUARTZ The Tigers lost to Javea Quartz on three of the four main rinks, therefore losing the match eight points to two. At the halfway stage there was very little separating most of the sides, but the Quartz eventually came through with a 75 to 60 shots win. The challenger side were in front with two ends to go, but just failed to take the win. The two friendly sides both lost. However, a very new combination of Linda Coughlin, Sheila Fairburn and skip Frank Dunne, won 10 of the 18 ends to just miss out on a win. BENITACHELL vs VISTABELLA This week’s Winter League game saw the BBC making the trip south and hoping to maintain its great winning run and attempt to make it five straight away wins in a row. The congratulations went to the only winning rink of Skip Jeff Richards, Tony Lawley, Derek Mawson and Linda Richards. They played out an evenly contested first half, winning five of the first nine ends, to lead by seven – six at the half way stage. By the 15th end the score had grown to 16 – seven, and they kept the pressure up to be worthy winners 20 – nine.

Terry Corner, Iris Gardiner, Mike Smith and Bert McLean fought out a close and evenly balanced game, but were unable to close down the opposition and had a final score of 15 – 20. David Roberts, Bob Cockell, Richard Gardiner and Christine Mawson suffered the same. Closing to a deficit of 10 – 13 on the 14th end, but were unable to level out the game losing 11 – 17. Skip Maggie Lawley, Jacquie Roberts, Mary Cockell and Tim Woodcock started the game well, and had squared the game to eight – eight at the half way stage. The opposition fought back and the advantage went to them with a final score of 15 – 17. Dudley Davies, Clive Langan, Carol Davies and John Avey were 0 – 12 down by the fifth end but managed to pull back to trail by eight shots at the half way stage. They won six of the last nine ends but were unable to achieve the win having a final score of 12 – 20. The Berleen Game Skipped by Harry Chick with Vivian Erridge, Steve Griffin and Linda Smith put on a great show with a fantastic seven on the 10th end and going on to a deserved victory 19 – 15.
