by Adele Land Voting is under way to name Andalucia’s prettiest town and Mojacar is in the race. An online competition has been launched to find the most attractive town in Andalucia, organised by travel website Viajestic. Some 20 towns and villages were put forward for the competition via a social media campaign and the winning town will be entered into the annual ‘prettiest village in Spain’ competition. Mojacar became a part of the association of the prettiest villages in Spain in 2013 during a ceremony at the town hall, and a plaque at the entrance of the village was erected. On the town’s official Facebook page, followers were urged to vote for Mojacar in this latest poll to ensure its place in the next stage. To qualify for entry, towns and villages must satisfy certain

Earlier in the week Mojacar was lagging behind in sixth place with some 7,000 votes.

In the lead was the town of Marchena in Sevilla. Keen for Mojacar to proceed to the next stage, proud residents took matters into their own hands this week by posting and sharing the website on popular, local social media forums. A LOCAL residents’ Facebook group came to the rescue when a young dog went missing in Mojacar. Little Osker was enjoying a walk on the promenade with his ‘foster mum’ Pat Weston, when he slipped the lead and ran away. A member of the ‘Mojacar Forum’ page, Ms Weston immediately posted a description and a photo in the hope people would help find the three-month old pup. Within minutes, plenty of people were out searching along the beach area and up side streets. Despite everyone’s efforts the dog was nowhere to be found. However, three days later, came a breakthrough. Osker had found himself stuck on the balcony of an unoccupied apartment. Fortunately the owner returned, recognised him from the Facebook posts and returned him to a delighted Pat.

THE socialist party in Mojacar has urged the town council to buy the old Moresco hotel in the village. The 300-room hotel closed its doors in 2009 and has since stood empty and fallen into disrepair. The Artuto Cantoblanco group, which owns the hotel, allegedly owes more than €200,000 in IBI (property tax) payments. Group chairman Arturo Fernandez received the Indalo de Oro (Golden Indalo) award in 2012, and there have been many calls from opposition groups to have him stripped of the award.

Built in 1970, in its heyday the landmark hotel accommodated more than 600 people at any one time in the summer, and was also a destination of the government-subsidised holidays for Spanish pensioners during the winter months. Socialist party leader, Manuel Zamora, lamented the lack of visitors to the village outside the main season, and said the closure of the hotel was a “blow to the town.” Zamora added that the general feeling among residents and business owners is that “the village is dead.” The socialist leader explained that due to

the insolvency of the hotel’s owner, the property could be bought at a low price. He went on to suggest that a hotel chain could take on the running of the establishment, creating much-needed employment in the town. Zamora concluded by saying the purchase of the hotel by the town council would also prevent a private investor turning the property into residential accommodation, as was the case with the old Mojacar Hotel, now a block of flats. Zamora will raise the suggestion at this week’s Mojacar council meeting.

GOING to insane lengths to implicate her partner, a Carboneras woman has been found guilty by an Almeria court of slashing her own face and accusing her ex of attacking her. The jury accepted the man’s defence, with officers finding no evidence to support her claim.

Over limit AN unsurprising turn of events saw a lorry driver crash at a roundabout while nine times over the permitted alcohol limit. Clocking in at a heavily saturated 1.41 milligrams of alcohol per litre, the man was immediately arrested by the Guardia Civil investigating the incident.

ALMERIA Cinema Office has signed up more than 100 companies related to the movie industry. From the beginning of 2015, the provincial cinema office called Filming Almeria, has registered a total amount of 115 companies and individuals that are directly related to cinema business in Almeria. The majority of people that have registered with this company are in the fields of film production, direction and camera operation. However, there are many other occupations represented such as photography, casting, design, construction, sound and art directors, as well as screenwriters. Filming Almeria has also carried out other activities related to the cinema sector, including production contests, technical advising and managing news and press releases of Almeria en Corto cinema festival.

Police dedicated to animal rights RESPONSIBILITY for protection and health is shared ALMERIA based marine rescue organisation, Equinac, has submitted a petition to the Spanish government calling for formation of a branch of the police dedicated to animal rights. The group, together with animal rights organisation

Anadel, gathered signatures on the website change.org after promoting the cause on social media. The responsibility for animal protection and health is currently shared by various public administrations including Seprona Guardia

Civil nature protection branch and the Local Police alongside their other duties. The groups believe that the formation of a dedicated, specially trained unit would ensure better legislation leading to better protection of animals.

Tourism is for everyone VERA Council took to the stage at the Fitur tourism-trade show in Madrid to launch its initiative for disabled visitors to the town. The council has linked-up with accessible sports company Natural Kayak to bring a range of activities to visitors with

physical and sensory disabilities. Tourism councillor Isabel de Haro said the town was aware of the difficulties faced by people with disabilities and that Vera will become the first town in the province to offer a range of accessible sports and cultural activities.

Mojacar represented at world kiteboarding championship MOJACAR resident Osaïa Reding Commaille will be representing Spain in the World Kiteboarding Championship. Sponsored by Mojacar Town Council, Osaïa, at 12 years of age has an enviable track record and an undeniable talent. She shares her daily routine between the Mojacar Bartolome Flores School and the town’s beaches. As any other sixth grade student of her age, she has all the usual concerns of adolescents but remains cheerful and full of fun. But, when you see her on the kiteboard no one can remain indifferent, it is clearly her sport and she is well aware that only hard work and extensive practice will take her to the top. Kiteboarding is considered an extreme water sport where participants traverse the

At a very young age she has already achieved third place in the Cup of Spain and came fourth in the National Championship, despite being the youngest entrant of the two competitions. Osaïa has been chosen to participate in the exclusive camp ‘Next Generation International’ organised by Kitesurf World Champion, Etienne Lhote. Only 10 children from around the world are selected.

There she will meet with other promising youngsters from Brazil, France, the Netherlands and Denmark, although Osaïa will be the only Spanish representative and one of only two girls in the camp. For Osaïa Reding to participate in this camp, to be held in Tarifa in late February, represents another important step in her training and development. It will surely be of great help towards her preparations for the Junior World Championship in April.

Almond blossom trail in bloom A TOTAL of eight routes are available taking in Lubrin, Lucainena de las Torres and Sorbas By Adele Land ORGANISERS in the region of Filabres-Alhamilla have launched the third edition of the Almond Blossom and Gastronomy routes. The previous edition of the cultural event attracted more than a thousand visitors who hiked or cycled the route admiring the almond blossom and enjoying tapas at the various establishments. Tours will be held the last weekend in January and first three weekends in February.

A total of eight routes are available, taking in local villages including, Lubrin, Lucainena de las Torres and Sorbas. A number of restaurants are participating in the event and will offer a variety of dishes made with local ingredients. In addition to gastronomy, visitors can learn about the ethnographic heritage of the area and participate in a photo competition. The winning photos will be featured in promotional material for next year’s event.

Remember – There Is Now UK Capital Gains Tax On Property With all the noise around the UK pension reforms last year it is easy to forget that there was another big change affecting everyone here who owns property in the UK. British expatriates now have to pay capital gains tax in the UK when they sell UK property. Who is taxed? Until 6 April 2015, if you were nonUK resident for five consecutive UK tax years, you were not taxed in the UK on the gains made when you sold UK property. Now you will have to pay tax there if you sell it. This applies to nonUK resident individuals, non-resident partners in UK resident and UK nonresident partnerships, companies and trusts. What is taxed? The tax applies when you sell UKbased residential property, which is defined as ‘property used or suitable for use as a dwelling,’ regardless of whether

In most cases you can choose whether to rebase the value of your property to 5th April 2015, or time-apportion the gain. You also have the option of computing the gain over the whole period of your ownership.

What is the charge? The tax charge is the same as that paid by UK residents. The net gain on your UK property is added to your other UK-source income and taxed at 18% or 28%, depending on whether your UK income puts you in the basic or higher-rate tax bracket. Companies pay tax at 20%, or 28% if it falls within the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings. It is also 28% for trusts. What reliefs are there? Individuals and partnerships have an annual allowance of £11,100 and trustees £5,550 (for 2015/16). Over and above this, under UK law, if you meet the conditions for private residence relief (PRR), you do not have to pay capital gains tax on your main home. Non-residents selling UK residential property and UK residents selling property in Spain may be able to get this relief if they meet new

qualifying conditions. You can apply PRR to a property if you have lived in it for 90 days or more over the UK tax year. If you are UK resident, you can also apply the relief to a property you own here in Spain if you spend 90 days in it. Conversely, if you live in Spain and spend 90 days in a property you own in the UK, you can nominate this as your principal residence. Although this allows you to avoid capital gains tax, you may be seen as UK resident for tax purposes under the UK’s Statutory Residence Test. This means you would have to pay tax in the UK on your worldwide income. Seek specialist advice to consider your tax situation as a whole. The UK/Spain tax treaty Residents of Spain are subject to Spanish capital gains tax on their worldwide real estate gains. So a

Spanish resident selling a UK property would be liable to tax in both countries. You will not pay tax twice, but need to understand the interaction of the UK and Spanish tax regimes under the double taxation treaty. Tax involving two countries can be complicated so you should always seek professional advice to make sure you get the solution that works best for your situation and objectives. Brand new plans for forums A BRAND new development plan has been announced by the Cuevas del Almanzora Town Council, that will see a series of debates and forums tackle the town’s strengths, weaknesses, projects and problems. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate. Kicking off on January 26 the first session was tourism, the hotel industry and the commercial sector. Further forums will take place at dates to be announced. By developing economic plans, the municipality hopes to obtain some EU grants to give it an extra shot in the arm.

Reservoir blues A MASSIVE drop in the capacity of the Cuevas del Almanzora reservoir has been noted with a more than 10 per cent decrease on the 2014 volume registered at the end of the year. There were 17.65 cubic hectometres of water at the end of 2015, four less than the previous year. One cause may be the marked decrease in rainfall throughout the province with an enormous 13.4 per cent drop in 2015.

Urgent help needed CHARITY set to close following founder’s death By Adele Land DOG rescue centre, The Dog House Foundation, near Huercal-Overa is in dire straits following the death of its founder this week. Animal lover, Paul Tighe, was diagnosed with cancer and returned to the UK where he sadly died. Mr Tighe moved to Spain with his former partner in 2003. After taking in a few stray dogs, word spread and people would bring injured and abandoned dogs on a regular basis. At one time Mr Tighe was caring for more than 90 dogs. His policy was never to turn a dog away and thanks to a good relationship with a UK-based rescue centre he was successful in finding homes for many of the dogs. At the time of his diagnosis, the centre was home to some 54 dogs, many in need of veterinary care and vaccinations. Since Mr Tighe’s death, local

HOMELESS: Many more dogs like Harry urgently need a home. animal lovers have rallied round to help and homes have been found for almost half the dogs, but funds are needed to feed and care for those remaining. One of the concerns for the volunteers is the dogs diagnosed with Leishmaniasis, a canine disease transmitted by sand-flies.

Volunteer Christine Clement told Euro Weekly News: “People do not realise that dogs with the disease can live a long and healthy life with regular medication.” If anyone is able to offer a home to a dog or to help with a donation they should contact Shirley Crawford on 650 105 166.

A JEWEL thief has been arrested by the National Police in Almeria for allegedly stealing €1,000 worth of jewels from an elderly couple in Almeria. The 32-year-old woman was hired as a maid by the couple and was identified after officers found the items in a pawn shop.

A pig blood bath A HEINOUS crime is being investigated by the Guardia Civil which has accused two youths of killing 72 piglets by jumping on top of them. Working in a pig farm in HuercalOvera at the time, the two allegedly filmed the butchery as they attacked them. The pair, aged 19 and 22, showed little remorse for the slaughter which killed 19 piglets and left 53 seriously injured which later died from the trauma.

LORRY FIRE: Firefighters were called out twice to deal with the blaze. By Adele Land FIREFIGHTERS from Huercal-Overa were called out on two occasions to deal with a lorry fire on the motorway near the town. The lorry, carrying a large cargo of vegetables, caught fire while it was travelling on

the A7. The driver called the emergency services who attended the scene. Later in the day a second fire broke out under the vehicle as it was being towed away and the fire service was called out again. A section of the road was closed for most of the morning.

Two caught CAUGHT red-handed behind the reception counter of a commercial establishment in Arboleas, two men have been arrested by the Guardia Civil who recovered â‚Ź1,024 and a knife.

will transform it into an openair theatre during summer months. The project has a budget of €480,000.

Debt-free start A DEBT-FREE start to the year was hailed by the Huercal-Overa Town Council, as it approved the 2016 budget with its accounts fully in order. The forecast for the year sees an expected €10,202,945 in revenue, and maximum expenditure of €9,450,463. The council intends to use the additional revenue to invest in the areas which need it most, with the social expenses budget increasing by 28 per cent. Additional resources will be diverted to better services, youth and the environment.

TT-Racer is back on track ALMERIA-based motorcycle racer Antonio Maeso is to return to the racing track three years after a horrific accident, which looked to have ended his career. Maeso was competing at the world-famous Isle-ofMan TT r a c e s i n 2 0 1 3 , when he crashed while taking a corner and suffered numerous broken bones in his leg. He was treated at a nearby hos p i t a l b e f o r e b e in g transferred back to Spain,

where he has undergone a number of operations and extensive physiotherapy. Maeso, who described the last two years as the worst of his life, is the only Spanish rider to compete in the prestigious event, and will make his return riding in the lightweight class on a 650cc motorcycle. Maeso has a large following throughout Spain, and took to Twitter to thank his fans for their support during his recovery.

Transport app achievement THOUSANDS of people follow urban transport in Almeria each day using a mobile application. The tool reportedly receives 138,000 visits each day and has been downloaded roughly 50,000 times. New van in sight for Vera food bank GROUP currently helps around 1,400 families By Adele Land VERA food bank is closer to raising enough money for a new van thanks to the Vera and District Lions Club. Club secretary, Pam Mattioli, presented a representative from the Vera food bank, with donations totalling €2,050 from both the Lions and the Vera Playa ladies group. The original van broke down recently and seriously hindered the charity in performing its valuable service. The group currently helps around 1,400 families in Vera and the surrounding areas and its work includes distributing dried goods

which come from Almeria food bank and from local collections and also collecting and distributing fresh produce from local agricultural firms. Volunteers from the Vera and District Lions Club also help by collecting fresh produce and delivering it to the food bank on a weekly basis. A missed opportunity for Albox tourism in Madrid OPPOSITION party, Partido Popular (PP), in Albox has criticised the council for not representing the town at this

Dead seabirds increase NO specific weather conditions could be blamed By Adele Land MARINE rescue group, Equinac, has reported an increasing number of seabirds being found dead on Almeria’s beaches. The species found include razorbills, gulls, shearwaters and cormorants. In a statement, the group said it could not explain the increase and added that there had been no specific weather conditions which could be to blame. The aim of the project is to immerse young people in new innovative technology, giving them a good knowledge base to develop skills in robotics and home automation. The four-hour classes will be taught in the Guadalfaro room at the Mojacar multi-use centre. Youth councillor Raquel Belmonte said she hopes the knowledge will stand students in good stead if they plan to work in the technology field.

Cash boost for HuercalOvera entrepreneurs A GROUP of 15 new business owners have just received financial assistance from Huercal-Overa council. In the past year a total of 50 new entrepreneurs in the town have received start-up grants of €2,500 to help get

their businesses off the ground. The new businesses include catering, gardening, leisure activities and agriculture. The aim of the ongoing programme is to promote

self-employment and increase the economic activity of the town. Other measures to help new businesses included the scrapping of opening licence fees and assistance for warehouse rental.

Bitcoin problems MIKE HEARN, a Zurichbased developer and longtime supporter of the theoretical Bitcoin, surprised many when he published a blog calling Bitcoin a ‘failed’ project. He says that he has now sold all of his own bitcoins and will no longer take part in this internet-based currency’s development. Two of the biggest problems with the Bitcoin concept were that they were intangible and therefore needed to rely upon the honesty of all those dealing in them. In addition, they were considered a method of untraced money laundering, although Dutch police have just arrested 10 people for laundering €20 million through the system.

REAL MADRID: Earned the largest amount of revenue for the 11th year in a row. the previous year and in itself a record. Surprise entries included New-

castle United, Everton and West Ham, with both Manchester City and Arsenal earning more than cur-

rent underperformers Chelsea. The list only looks at revenues earned and does not take into ac-

count club debts or the fact that Real Madrid is banned from signing any new young players for two seasons.

EACH year, the giant accounting firm Deloitte publishes a list of the richest football clubs in the world, all of which are from Europe and nine of whom are English clubs. For the 11th year in a row, Real Madrid earned the largest amount of revenue in the 2014/2015 season pocketing a total of €577 million, whilst its biggest rival Barcelona nudged Manchester United into third place with revenues of €560.8 million. Thanks to their exit from the Champion’s League last season, Manchester United only managed to earn €519.5 million, but they are still the largest earning club from England and with a return to Champion’s League, expect a bumper financial return in this new season. The top 20 contains nine English teams, four Italian, three Spanish (including Atletico Madrid), three German and one French, which between them have earned a whopping €6.6 billion, 8 per cent up on

BARCLAYS BANK: Intends to sell its credit card operations in Spain and Portugal. FOLLOWING the sale of its Spanish banking operation to La Caixa which was completed in 2015, Barclays has now indicated its intention to sell its credit card operations in both Spain and Portugal. It is said that there is already interest from Spanish bank Santander, as well as an American private equity company. Although Barclays did not have to go ‘cap in hand’ to the British government during the

deepest of the recession unlike other banks such as Lloyds, it did have to accept foreign equity investment, and has been subject to intense scrutiny by both the British and American governments for a number of its activities. As part of its three-year plan to rationalise its business and concentrate on core operations in Britain and America, as well as parts of Africa, it has been divesting itself of businesses in

Europe, so this is the next stage of its retrenchment. The sale will naturally increase the volume of funds it has access to. None of the parties who may be involved in the transaction have made any comment, and there may be as many as four interested parties, but it is common knowledge that Barclays wishes to see a relatively speedy sale with a target for the end of March. Despite the difference in size

of the populations of the two countries, Barclaycard has a much larger share of the Portuguese market at 20 per cent, with 460,000 customers when compared to the 6 per cent and 250,000 customers it has in Spain. Although no firm figure has been announced, it has been suggested by the BBC that if a sale takes place, it is likely to raise between €300 million and €600 million.

AS regular perusers of this blurb are aware, as much as I welcome your letters, I don’t normally enter into discussions concerning their often wide-ranging opinions. Basically, because it can lead to the column getting bogged down with a missive exchange that can become negative and somewhat insular. On this occasion however I do take advantage of my right of replying to the email published on this week’s letters page. To me this is typical of the ‘glass half full’ attitude that has created most of these problems in the first place. Firstly, I take umbrage as being portrayed as some kind of rebel rouser, stirring up unrest and provoking confrontation at every opportunity. I’m not a warmonger, I simply report the facts as I see them. I would love to state that all was well, and everyone at peace

Unfortunately, with the unrelenting expansion of organisations whose sole ambition is to obliterate all those who disagree with their doctrines, none of these Shangri

Whether those in denial choose to believe it or not, we are embroiled in a conflict that could, if we don’t at least recognise it, result in the end of our civilisation as we know it. Frankly, to say these acts of war are only happening in a few places, and there are hundreds of cities that are not being attacked, is pure unadulterated, dangerous bunkum. Try telling the New York victims of 9/11 that all of them dying was OK because it wasn’t happening in Chicago, or those who perished in the Paris atrocities that it wasn’t so bad, because Lyon was peaceful that day. Convince the maimed and slaughtered citizens of London they should be thankful that while they were being attacked, the streets of Manchester spent the day terrorist free! ON a recent visit to the mother country, we happened to drive past a house near our village that was once occupied by one of life’s great characters, a retired colonel of the Irish Guards, known to his friends and fellow ex-officers as Seamus. He was an aristocrat through and through, but treated everyone he came into contact with in exactly the same uncondescending way, be they royalty or street cleaners. His language when telling one of his famous stories to the boys, was barrack room vernacular at its bawdy best, but when engaging ladies in conversation, he was the epitome of charm and courteousness.

MANNERS: Due decorum and a stiff upper lip were required in all situations. Kissing hands or tipping his hat were as natural to him as eating peas off a knife is to me. His mother was of genteel birth he told me, and the emphasis in her day was to mar-

ry well and acquire a husband from the aristocracy or upper classes. But she had other rebellious thoughts and furthered her education at a school for young ladies, the establish-

ment being a stately home of some magnificence, and ruled by a principal of formidable demeanour. One evening over dessert, the elderly butler approached unhurriedly, and bending

down painfully to engage the principal’s ear, said: “Begging pardon Ma’am, no cause for alarm but the ‘ouse is on fire.” There was a sharp intake of breath around the table, and I suspect a hint of nervous flatulence, but no noticeable reaction from the principal who, ramrod straight, informed her ‘gels’ that they should finish the meal with due decorum. Nothing, not even a raging inferno, would interrupt their set routine and they were eventually led to the safety of the gardens in a dignified manner. It was an illustration of the now sadly defunct, British stiff upper lip. The colonel is no longer with us, but he was one of those rare examples from the upper classes who have no pretentions regarding status and treat everyone with the respect and courtesy they merit, regardless of background or upbringing.

The storm brought snow from the Gulf Coast to New England, with near-record snowfalls measured from Washington DC to New York City causing people to be cut off, and roads, train stations and airports to be closed, as well as mass purchasing of food, leaving shelves empty and some people hungry. A stalemate for Spanish Parliament WE make no apologies for returning to the matter of the Spanish election, and the fact that at the time of writing these observations there has been very little progress in the formation of a new government. This means that the old government continues to run the country, even though it no longer has a formal mandate and does not have a majority in the Cortes. King Felipe, having met with the leaders of every party, starting with the ‘minnows’ on January 18 and finishing with the main contenders on January 22, issued a formal invitation to Mariano Rajoy to form a minority government. The interim Prime Minister declined to do so, not on the basis that he would never agree to run the country, but on the basis that he couldn’t agree at the moment as he didn’t hold sufficient seats to allow him to be elected as Prime Minister, as those opposed to him were in the majority. To this end therefore, he has indicated that he will keep trying to find a compromise with the other parties to allow him to create a workable coalition. To some extent this is quite a clever ploy, because in theory, he could carry on like this until October 2016 before a new election can be called, but if he agreed to accept the call to form a government and was defeated then the election would have to take place within two months.

Would you seriously ban them all? RE: “Can this alien bunch be an asset?” This obviously includes Syrian schoolchildren and babies whose homes have been reduced to rubble by years of bombing. Would you seriously ban them all, leaving them in roofless ruins with no water, sanitation, electricity, food or medical aid until they die? Oh, sorry, that’s Donald Trump’s answer, isn’t it? There’s been a lot in the news this week about the Zika virus, which many had never heard of before, so we asked Dr Perez Belmonte to answer a few questions about it. -What is zika? It is a virus which comes mainly from the equatorial areas of America, Asia and Africa. -How is it transmitted? It is transmitted via mosquitoes, which can also carry other viruses which cause more wellknown illnesses including yellow or dengue fever. -What are the symptoms? Zika usually starts with the appearance of skin lesions accompanied by fever, muscle and joint pain and headaches, although in more serious cases breathing problems or neurological issues can occur. Symptoms usually last between four and seven days. There are debates at the moment as to whether pregnant women affected by the virus can give birth to babies with microcephaly (smaller than average heads), although

there is no conclusive data to confirm this. -Is it dangerous? Generally it is a mild illness and patients tend to recover within a week. -How can we avoid catching it? This type of mosquito is not present in developed countries so catching it is virtually impossible. In countries where the mosquito is found the best way to avoid contagion is to use repellents, mosquito nets and long sleeved clothes etc to avoid being bitten. -Is there a cure or treatments? Currently treatments concentrate on alleviating symptoms, treating muscular pain with pain killers, skin eruptions with anti-histamines, etc. Rest is also recommended while symptoms last. Once the illness passes the patient is cured, and there are generally no after effects.

Independent Theatre Group helps Vera orphanage through donations GROUP decided to support the wonderful work that the home does for the children who are looked after there By Adele Land PRESIDENT of the Independen t T h e a t r e Gr o u p , Judy Morris, recently presented funds amounting to €400 to Sister Antonia at the Ho g a r Sa n Au g u s tin (Vera Orphanage). The f u n d s we r e r ais e d from raffles held and a percentage of the general proceeds of two of the group’s productions last year. The productions included Wife Begins at 40 and Educating Rita. Accompanying Judy were the group’s secretary, Ellie U nw in , wh o a l so st a rre d in Ed u c a t i n g R i t a an d Ian Jones the group’s trea-

surer, who directed the two plays. The Independent Theatre Group chooses a charity to support each year, but this year it has decided to continue supporting the orphanage and the wonderful work it does for the unfortunate children who are looked after there. Sister Antonia gave the visitors a guided tour of the orphanage and it is safe to say that the visitors were very impressed by the way the children are looked after there. Albox leads th in renewable e AIM is to reduce costs and contribute to fight ALBOX Town Hall is to be the first in the province to run 100 per cent on solar energy. Work is scheduled to begin in February during which time 38 solar panels will be installed. The work is expected to last three months and by June the building will be fully powered by solar energy. The town hall building will remain connected to the grid as a back-up in case of cloudy days or when additional power is required. Solar power usage currently has a cap of 100 kilowatts. The project has a budget of some €27,000 and was initiated by the town council, led by Mayor Rogelio Mena. The aim is to reduce energy costs and contribute to the fight against climate change. Mena said he hopes other businesses and private residents will

Rocky road ahead in Albox SOCIALIST opposition group, PSOE, in Almeria has accused the provincial government of “neglecting and abandoning” public roads. Spokesman, Juan Antonio Lorenzo, singled out the AL7100 between Albox and Oria as one of the worst roads. He stressed the importance of the road explaining that some 2,000 residents of the two towns use the road on a daily basis, adding that the road also connects the Almanzora valley to the Los Velez area and is the only access road to Saliente. According to the PSOE report, the road is in a poor state of repair, with broken crash barriers and crumbling hard shoulders. The report also laments the poor ongoing maintenance of the road surface stating the road has never been properly resurfaced, only patched in places.

Some uses of fallen avocados THERE are many healthy things you can do, so don’t compost them, eat them Dick Handscombe

THE other day I was asked after a day of strong winds, ‘Can fallen avocados be added to the compost heap?’ My reply was ‘Yes but why waste them?’ For

they normally don’t bruise and there are so many healthy things one can do with them. These include beneficial vitamins, minerals, omega three and

six fatty acids, and energy giving calories that combine to produce a good rich taste and enjoyable creamy texture. In groves of avocados most

trees are sheltered from windy weather, but individual plants in gardens are often unprotected so a few immature small fruits with weak stems fall daily in windy

weather once they weigh about 50 grams. The best thing is to collect them up and place in a bowl in the kitchen to use as soon as they dent slightly when pressed gently. So what can you do with them? 1. Eat the small ones raw like an apple. To make it easy eat the skin and soft unripe kernel. Fallens then become a useful impromptu snack when working in the garden. 2. When it’s time for breakfast make an omelette or scrambled egg using a soft, fried filling combining finely cut green and red peppers, one or two cut up avocados and pine nuts. 3. Make a mousse to serve on slices of apple or bread. Skin and stone a few small avocados

USES: You can eat them raw, add them to a salad, make an omelette or even make a face mask.

and mix with a little yoghurt and lemon juice, a little salt, and plenty of pepper to taste using a pestle and mortar. 4. Make a variety of avocado based salads incorporating as many tasty fresh salad leaves as possible from the garden. 5. Add to stews as a taste enhancer and thickener. 6. Make an avocado and broccoli soup now young broccoli heads can be harvested. 7. Make a winter face mask. 8. Mash one and use to massage muscular pains away. 9. If some become overripe add

The entire cast of this sophisticated story takes it to the pinnacle of refined Surrealism, each player that struts their stuff on stage becomes instantly part of the ongoing drama and confusion. Meanwhile, their seemingly disjointed parts perfectly knit all loose ends into a pattern of constant confusion and mayhem. Alan Bennett played by Peter Hands, remains the steady anchor not allowing the di-

vergent cast of characters to fly off into outer space, nor lose the flow of his long suffering earthly diary. A particularly good cameo is notched up by Sally Miller, as the interloper appearing for just moments to make sure the confusion reigns supreme. She’s the blackmailer. Les Fletcher has done a truly ingenious set design concocting an entire neighbourhood of happenings to appear right in front of us in a small space. Behind the scenes is loaded with sound, lighting and stage details that make it all so good and West End. As always these productions are done for charity, this time for Asprodalba. This special event will be held in Vera at the Teatro Regio just metres from the Vera Town Hall and with very comfortable seats. It is an event that shouldn’t be missed. Tickets are just €10.

Whether you’re travelling under your own steam or on a package, the chances are, you’ll be paying upfront, with more at stake if anything goes wrong.

INSURANCE: Don’t wait until the last minute to book it, it’s asking to be caught out. Suppose you’re injured and have to cancel your trip because you’re unfit to travel. What if your flight from Spain is delayed, and you miss your connecting flight out of the UK? Or a relative back home falls seriously ill and you have to cut your holiday short to be there? It’s human nature to think ‘it won’t happen to me’ , but if it does, you’ll certainly be glad you

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHY is it when you take your car in to have something done, on the way home from picking it up some warning light comes on or a noise appears? You take it back to the garage and tell them you just had some work done and now this problem has appeared. You all know what’s next. It’s the shrug of the shoulders! “Let’s have a look”. The bonnet goes up. Then it happens, the sharp intake of breath. “What? What?” Then the explanation, the kafluferla valve has sprung a leak and the shlaygool seal needs replacing. “Hold on a minute, it was all fine before I brought it for the other little thing that needed doing. Absolutely no connection? Pure coincidence, even though the pipe going into the thingamajig is at the other end of the pipe you just replaced on the whatchamacallit. So how much is all this going to cost?” “Well even though it’s just this tiny seal that has gone, they don’t sell that bit on its

own. Yeah, you have to buy a whole new gangle valve which has to come from the main dealer in (fill in the place that is furthest away from your garage).” “The cost?” “Well it’s going to be about €500 with fitting!” “OK let me think about it and I’ll let you know tomorrow.” And off I go. Now here is a tip, never believe that every mechanic knows what he is talking about, because on the way home I pop into my local garage that has been there for years and ask him to have a quick look at my car. He lifts the bonnet up, has a look round, gets a screwdriver and another tool that makes a clicking noise when you move it in any direction. A few minutes later he comes out from under the bonnet and says he’s fixed it. “How much?” “Give me €10.” Sorry, what about the €500 bit of kit that was needed? He then informs me the only problem was that whoever did the original repair simply didn’t put the other end back properly! Naturally I went back to the original garage and told them in no uncertain terms what I thought of them. The moral of the story is it doesn’t matter how far a fish swims it never sweats… Or maybe always get a second opinion.

New speed radars CAN also detect if a driver is using a mobile phone AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

NEW DETECTORS: Can tell if a driver is on a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt. A NEW range of radar speed detectors installed by the DGT not only monitor for vehicles travelling in excess of the maximum permitted speed limit, but they are also able to tell if a driver is not wearing a seatbelt or is talking on a mobile phone. The cameras, which have been installed in 70 locations across the country already, look similar to the existing devices, but can capture images at 50 frames per second, which results in higher definition still images being captured, which result in more details being collected and then analysed, such as the driver’s current activities and recording the vehicle information.

The aim of the investment in the devices is to improve road safety, with the latest data revealing that in the most recent campaign 1,349 drivers were reported for not using seatbelts, and another 1,113 for using a phone whilst driving. With the Pegasus radar already capable of capturing this detail, and recording the necessary evidential data, these latest ground-based cameras add to the arsenal of monitoring tools. Further data also reveals that 77 per cent of all people killed in vehicles are not wearing a seatbelt, and so by changing attitudes through enforcement, a significant number of lives can be saved.

The 19th Hole Golf Society PLENTY of excuses offered ON THURSDAY, January 21, a team Waltz was played by 32 members as well as an Individual Stableford competition. Again they were blessed with perfect weather conditions, however plenty of excuses were offered by the low scoring teams for their performance. Yet, the team of Mike and Karyn Esposito, Nekana Galindez and Paco Ocaña Grajal, needed no excuse scoring 83 stableford points, easily taking first place from Tony MacKay’s team of Geoff Smith, Ron (The Rocket) Curtis, and Jerry Edwards on 71 points. Nekana also had a Nearest the Pin on the 17th, which she converted to a Two, and great to see new member Terry Wilson, taking a Two on the 17th. In the Individual competitions; Doug Birrell, comfortably took the First Division with 34 points, whilst Geoff Smith with 32 points, captured first place in Division 2. The Brindle Bowl Hong Kong Pairs and the Mixed Pairs - Ladies Choice CABRERA LAWN BOWLING CLUB hosted two club competitions between January 8 and 17. The Brindle Bowls and the Mixed Pairs Ladies Choice. The Brindle Bowl, although a pairs competition is played on a slightly different format, with each of the two players of the team taking it in turns to lead and skip. The first player bowls two woods, the second player bowls all four woods and then the first player bowls their last two woods; a very interesting format. There were some very good rounds and closely contested matches, but the standout player throughout the competition was Sue Jenkins, who was partnered by her husband David. She had an excellent competition and got to the final with David where they met Flo and Alan Saunders. Sue and David got off to an excellent start and sadly for Flo and Alan they could not live with the excellent bowling especially from Sue. Flo and Alan only managed to win four ends with Sue and

The only difference is as the name states the lady has to choose a male partner. They were: Gill and Trevor Young, against Janet and Ian Jackson, with Janet and Ian winning the match on the 19th end, and also Joan and Tony Wells, against Jean Smallwood and Peter Sands, again Jean and Peter winning after the 19th end. Villaricos on a clear day VILLARICOS Golf Society held their second Stableford competition of 2016 on a cool but clear day on an Aguilon golf course in good condition on Tuesday January 19. Rik Bird enjoyed the conditions in winning Division 1, with a 33 point return from his handicap of 11. Other scores however must be considered average, with the runners up in Division 1 being: Chris Medlin, coming second with 29, and Fred Foster, third scoring 28. Division 2, returns showed a good day for the Ladies, with winner Penny Craig and her 29 points, pipping Angela Cherry on 27 in second on count back from John Boyle who takes third. Nearest the pin prizes went to Rosie Smith on the third, and John Winstanley at the 14th. A good, if rather long day was enjoyed by the 28 competitors, and the next event will also be at Aguilon on February 2.

Marina Phoenix Golf Society THURSDAY January 14, saw a team game at Marina Phoenix, played in a fourball better ball pairs format, with the pairs scores added together for a team total. A big turnout was headed with 85 points by winning team: Rod Ambrose, Derick Dale, Joanna Artemieff and Therese Le Tohic. Second place went to June Nicol, José Urroz, Mike Holland and Rosalie Fardon on 83, followed in third by Jim Budd, Marcos Caparros, Jackie Dale and Nadie Wass, with 81. There were nearest the pin prizes for Ali Mahmud (17), Jackie Dale (5), and Alf Taylor (5). The individual Stableford, on Monday 18, saw June Nicol win the ladies division on 37 points, clear of Isobel Jones, on 30 in second, and Jackie Dale, on 29 in third. The men’s division was a success for Tony Wells scoring 38, followed by the consistent Terry Oliver with 36, and Les Armfield on 35 in third.

The Badgers play away from home WEDNESDAY, January 20, saw Badgers Golf Society travel away to the other side of Almeria and visit La Envia. The clouds seemed to vanish when the shotgun start exploded in the surrounding mountains to clear the air, as the sun came out and the birds started chirping. Another shock for the Badgers came with the best individual Stableford for some time, with Greg Knight coming out on top on 39 points. This points out once again that in golf, and with the handicap system, it’s a level playing field for all players. However the computer will take great pleasure cutting his handicap.
