Cycle carnage BRIT careering down wrong side of road mows down cyclists

by Linda Hall Six professional cyclists from the Giant-Alpecin team were injured in a head-on collision while training near Benigembla. The car was allegedly being driven by a British woman on the wrong side on the narrow and winding CV-720 road linking Benigembla and Parcent. She did not have time to brake, the cyclists said later. American rider Chad Haga suffered the worst injuries and

was airlifted by air ambulance to San Juan de Alicante hospital where he awaits surgery on a shattered eye socket. World-class German rider John Degenkolb, together with promising French rider Warren Barguil and three other team members, were taken to Denia hospital with fractures, cuts and bruises. All except Degenkolb were discharged after remaining in hospital for observation. Degenkolb was transferred to a Valencia hospital where prestigious surgeon Pedro Cavadas

will reconstruct the index finger on his left hand. Dutch team Giant is currently based in Calpe, preparing for the upcoming season. The resort is a favourite destination for professional cycling teams from northern Europe, who can train throughout the winter on all types of roads that include challenging mountain ascents.

TV jobs deal THE Generalitat and unions are negotiating to readmit Canal 9 ex-employees who took entrance exams to obtain their jobs. They started legal proceedings when the local broadcaster closed in

November 2013 and eliminating this court case would speed up the present regional government’s election promise to reverse the shutdown ordered by their predecessors.

Charity looted THIEVES took donated food worth €2,500 after forcing the door of the Red Cross storeroom at the Benidorm bullring. Police have found fingerprints and are confident of tracing the suspects and the Red Cross confirmed that the 437 families who depend on the food would not go without as the charity will replace the stolen goods.

Fast talking ALEXIS MARI, deputy spokesman for the Ciudadanos party in the Valencian parliament infuriated women’s groups by implying that many women tolerated abuse because this

Vets tackle zebu cow snoring VETS at Benidorm’s Terra Natura nature park have performed a bronchoscopy on a zebu cow who was suffering with a dry cough during the day, and snored at night. It was the first time the team have

performed such an operation at the park. A zebu (Bos taurus indicus) is a species of domestic cattle originating in South Asia. They are characterised by a fatty hump on their shoulders, a large longitudinal flap of skin that hangs beneath the neck and sometimes drooping ears. A bronchoscopy is an endoscopic technique used to inspect the inside of the airways for diagnostic purposes. An instrument is normally inserted either through the nose or mouth. The results of the procedure have not yet been revealed.

The British help camping statistics ACCORDING to Abectur, the group set up by hoteliers to defend the interests of their industry, the camping industry closed 2015 with an average occupancy of 76.6 per cent in Benidorm, representing an increase of five points over 2014 and the best figure since 2009, when they started recording the figures. More than 90 per cent of these tourists were foreign, with the British making up 71.9 per cent of that figure. The peak took place in the winter months, whilst in May and June occupation fell 70 per cent.

Free access to training INVESTMENT is for businessmen and entrepreneurs to improve their skills By Keith Baker BUSINESSMEN and entrepreneurs in Benissa are to have access to free training, thanks to a €150,000 investment.

The mayor of Benissa, Juan Bautista Rosello, has signed an agreement with the EOI (Escuela de Organizacion Industrial, or School of Industrial Organisation), to enable businessmen and entrepreneurs of the area to

have free access to training and resources, in order to improve their business skills, thereby increasing profits. The project is a joint venture between the municipality and the Ministry of Industry.

Remember – There Is Now UK Capital Gains Tax On Property With all the noise around the UK pension reforms last year it is easy to forget that there was another big change affecting everyone here who owns property in the UK. British expatriates now have to pay capital gains tax in the UK when they sell UK property. Who is taxed? Until 6 April 2015, if you were nonUK resident for five consecutive UK tax years, you were not taxed in the UK on the gains made when you sold UK property. Now you will have to pay tax there if you sell it. This applies to nonUK resident individuals, non-resident partners in UK resident and UK nonresident partnerships, companies and trusts. What is taxed? The tax applies when you sell UKbased residential property, which is defined as ‘property used or suitable for use as a dwelling,’ regardless of whether

In most cases you can choose whether to rebase the value of your property to 5th April 2015, or time-apportion the gain. You also have the option of computing the gain over the whole period of your ownership.

What is the charge? The tax charge is the same as that paid by UK residents. The net gain on your UK property is added to your other UK-source income and taxed at 18% or 28%, depending on whether your UK income puts you in the basic or higher-rate tax bracket. Companies pay tax at 20%, or 28% if it falls within the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings. It is also 28% for trusts. What reliefs are there? Individuals and partnerships have an annual allowance of £11,100 and trustees £5,550 (for 2015/16). Over and above this, under UK law, if you meet the conditions for private residence relief (PRR), you do not have to pay capital gains tax on your main home. Non-residents selling UK residential property and UK residents selling property in Spain may be able to get this relief if they meet new

qualifying conditions. You can apply PRR to a property if you have lived in it for 90 days or more over the UK tax year. If you are UK resident, you can also apply the relief to a property you own here in Spain if you spend 90 days in it. Conversely, if you live in Spain and spend 90 days in a property you own in the UK, you can nominate this as your principal residence. Although this allows you to avoid capital gains tax, you may be seen as UK resident for tax purposes under the UK’s Statutory Residence Test. This means you would have to pay tax in the UK on your worldwide income. Seek specialist advice to consider your tax situation as a whole. The UK/Spain tax treaty Residents of Spain are subject to Spanish capital gains tax on their worldwide real estate gains. So a

Spanish resident selling a UK property would be liable to tax in both countries. You will not pay tax twice, but need to understand the interaction of the UK and Spanish tax regimes under the double taxation treaty. Tax involving two countries can be complicated so you should always seek professional advice to make sure you get the solution that works best for your situation and objectives. Lesson against gender violence A WORKSHOP has been held at the Casa de Cultura in L’Alfas del Pi, aimed at identifying healthy and dangerous relationship patterns. Organised by the AMPAS (parents’ associations) of public schools with the cooperation of the Department of Education, the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policies, and the Valencian Institute for Women and Gender Equality, it was part of a campaign to educate against gender violence in adolescents.

Grant for Alfas to help families THE town of L’Alfas del Pi has received a grant of €18,200 from the Provincial Council of Alicante to help vulnerable families cope with basic and urgent needs. The aid is primarily intended to cover costs of electricity, water, food or housing. “This is designed to help meet the needs of the most vulnerable groups,” said Vicenta Baldo, councillor for Social Welfare. He added that the council had recently come to an agreement with several energy companies to avoid households at risk of being cut off.

SEA OF FRUITS: The event was attended by some 400 students. By Keith Baker USING the slogan ‘A sea of fruits,’ an event designed to impress on young people the importance of a healthy breakfast and a snack has been attended by some 400 students in Javea.

The Culinart Conference, organised by the Department of Education in Javea gave the children time in a cooking workshop, and included laboratory experiments with odours as well as waterpainting (an art form that mixes paint and water).

They were also introduced to Gyotaku, a traditional Japanese practice first used by fishermen in the mid1800s who wanted to have a record of their best catches. It involves using inks to make impressions on leaves or paper. It later became an art form.

FOURTEEN students have completed a Wine Tasting Course, organised by Seu University of La Nucia and University of Alicante. It included a visit to Gutierrez de la Vega winery, Parcent.

Alfas increases its sporting options VOLLEYBALL has been added to the range of courses By Keith Baker THE Department of Sports of L’Alfas del Pi has added volleyball practice to its range of sports courses. The activity has already taken the interest of a dozen young people between 14 and 15 years of age. They have been training on Thursday afternoons throughout the month of January. Attendance is free for all those interested.

“It is a course for children and young people of all ages, and we started from scratch,” said Ana Isabel Martinez, who is running the classes. Martinez has a degree in Science of Physical Activity and Sport and a Masters degree in Physical Education. She is also a former professional player and has been a volleyball coach at the Miguel Hernandez University, as well as the University

of Alicante and CV Playas de Benidorm. “As a professional I have played in teams across Spain, in both the Women’s Super League and the Liga FEV,” she said. Villajoyosa visit THE Regional Minister for Agriculture, Environment, Climate and Rural Development, Elena Cebrian Calvo, has visited the port of Villajoyosa. She was accompanied by the General Director of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Rogelio Llanes, the Regional Secretary for Agriculture, Francisco Rodriguez and Deputy Director General of Fisheries, Francisco Beltran. They met with the leader of the Association of Fishermen Jose Ignacio Llorca, First Deputy Mayor Joan Lloret, and several members of the association to discuss the issues the fishermen face. During the meeting the members of the association discussed with the visitors different projects to boost the fishing industry in the town, and have requested the support of the government to improve the marketing of the products of the Villajoyosa fleet. They stressed the importance of crayfish and discussed the possibility of creating a quality brand around them. After the meeting Cebrian stressed the importance of the fisheries sector in the community, and said they discussed the implementation of the Operational Programme of the European maritime and fisheries fund.

Hydrotherapy places in Finestrat RESIDENTS can register to take part in the new programme By Keith Baker ORGANISED by the Ministry of Health, some Finestrat residents will once again be able to take advantage of a Hydrotherapy programme in their town. This year the criteria has changed to include widows over 55 years of age. Those in receipt of unemployment benefit will also be eligible, as will those over 65 in receipt of social security payments, although not pensioners.

Statue donated A STATUE of Sant Vicent Ferrer has been donated to the Capilla de las Purisima de las Religiosas Franciscanas (Chapel of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate), of Teulada. The statue belonged to priest D Juan Bertomeu Julia, and has been donated by his family. The ‘Festa dels Xiquets de Sant Vicent’ commemorating the birth of San Vicente Ferrer, on January 23, 1350, ended on Sunday January 24.

Children with disabilities rated at 45 per cent or more are also included. The deadline for applications is May 11. Councillor for Social Services, Maria Llorca, encouraged those eligible to seize the opportunity to enjoy the programme. Vaccine coming A CHICKENPOX vaccine will once again be available in February, according to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), although the actual date has not been announced.

Phone lines THE telecommunications infrastructure demanded for years by residents of Avenida Finestrat in Villajoyosa is at last being installed, giving them access to fixed phone lines and internet services.

Water is on THE municipal water company of Javea, Amjasa, has approved works aimed at improving their networks and facilities. Six minor works have been approved, at a cost of €82,300.

Coup for town hall magazine WILL feature photos By Keith Baker BENISSA’S town hall magazine, al Corrent, will feature photographs taken in El Poble Nou de Benitachell by Valencian artist Luis Montolio. As a result of talks with Myra van ‘t Hoff of the council, the cover of the current bi-monthly newsletter will feature the first photo. Residents of the municipality will be able to enjoy more of the artist’s photographs, showing the landscape, natural and cultural beauty of the town in subsequent issues. Montolio is famous for his murals in several parts of the El Carmen district of Valencia.

Quarry conversion is now under way WORK to convert the quarry of Serra Gelada into a new recreational area and leisure space is providing work for 15 unemployed people. The project, which will include a picnic area, gazebo and climbing wall, will also provide an alternative route to the lighthouse. There will also be information boards detailing the history of the site. The project has been in progress since last November, and has a budget of €220,000. As well as the 15 people employed at the site, the town has hired another 15 people for six months to work on expanding the Roman Villa Museum in Albir.

Art classes for adults DRAWING and painting classes for adults have resumed in Finestrat following the Christmas break. The classes take place in the Casa de Cultura on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 5pm to 8pm. The price is €20 per month for two hours per week and €30 per month for three hours a week. Ministers visit Altea NO better way to find solutions or alternatives By Keith Baker THE mayor of Altea, Jaume LLinares, welcomed the Minister of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, Elena Cebrian, to the town last week. Accompanying the minister was Francisco Rodriguez, regional secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development; Roger Llanes, Director General of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Valencian

Community, and David Cerdan, regional deputy. The meeting was also attended by Beatriu Nomdedeu, councillor for Agriculture and Fisheries; Veronica Lopez, councillor for Social Welfare and Vicent Ripoll, councillor for Public Safety and Traffic. Talking of fish farms, Cebrian said that “this activity is an economic option for many ports and complements the fishing sector, and has potential that we have to

study and evaluate together. These activities can be compatible environments with tourism and environmentally protected”. LLinares thanked the group for visiting Altea and said that “there is no better way to find solutions or alternatives to improve fishing than a visit.” The mayor added that “we must find compatibility between traditional fishing and breeding farms, which is a complement to the market and a business opportunity.”

Figures suggest an upturn FOR the first time since the start of the financial crisis, the number of families in Alcoy asking for aid to meet basic needs is down. In 2015 the town council allocated €445,623 to a total of 919 beneficiaries, representing a reduction of approximately 8 per cent over the previous year.

Seventy three fewer families were in receipt of help. Commenting on the figures, the councillor for Social Policies, Aroa Look, said they were encouraging, but that it was important not to “lower our guard, since there are still many families who are in distress.”

POLICE TRAINING: Learning about self-defence techniques. A POLICE OFFICER based in La Nucia has attended a training course organised by the Command of the Civil Guard. The course - PATIO (Plan Anual de Técnicas de Intervención Operativa) - trains Local Police officers in protocols, self-defence

techniques, and police intervention where firearms are used. The second part of the plan involves that officer training his colleagues so that all the officers at the station eventually benefit from the course.

Self-defence classes for women ALTEA’S Department of Youth has announced an ongoing programme of free self-defence classes. They will be lead by Manuel Navarro, master of Hapkido at Club Los Dragones of Altea, and Montserrat Gomez who won a silver medal in Hanminjok Hapkido in Korea, in 2013. The courses have the cooperation of the Local Police in Altea. Classes are held each Monday from 11am until noon for women of Altea. Signs good for Finestrat FINESTRAT has raised the profile of its places of interest with new signage. These new signs have been put in strategic positions in order to maximise visibility and promote the town. From the commercial centre, a sign informs passers-by of the proximity of the old town (five km) and Puig Campana mountain, and the beach at La Cala (one km). A small island with a big history NUEVA TABARCA was settled by Genoese refugees

TABARCA ISLAND: Was the subject of a doctoral thesis. By Linda Hall TABARCA ISLAND was the subject of a doctoral thesis recently defended at Alicante University by Jose Manuel Perez Burgos. Perez Burgos is an archaeologist and director of Tabarca Museum, and his dissertation analysed all the fields that contribute to the island’s immensely valuable heritage. It acquired its official name of Nueva Tabarca in 1770 after it was settled by refugees after the Island of Tabarca off Tunisia, which then belonged to Genoa, was overrun by the Bey of Tunis.

Before that it was known as Isla de San Pablo as legend claimed that St Paul once disembarked there. The island was known to the Greeks as Planesia and to the Romans as Planaria. Tabarca (population 68) covers an area of 30 hectares and is 1,800 kilometres long, measuring 450 metres across at its widest point. Geologists believe that it once formed part of the Santa Pola promontory. It is the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, and although it is only nine kilometres from Santa Pola, it comes under the administration of Alicante City, which is 15 kilometres away.

Emergency plea Traffic for paediatricians held up THE regional government turned down San Vicente Town Hall’s call for 24-hour paediatric coverage. Last September all parties on the local council voted unanimously in favour of requesting a paediatrician at the town’s Centro de Salud two, where doctors are on duty day-round.

A roof to be raised in Pego REPAIRS to the glazed dome of the Ecc-homo chapel in Pego are a step nearer. The 18th century chapel was badly damaged during the torrential November rains and the Santisimo Ecchomo brotherhood are anxious for repairs to start without delay. The dome, protected with polyurethane where it began to collapse last year, is now surrounded by scaffolding. Carlos Company, president of the Ecce-homo brotherhood, explained that members are raising funds through donations, selling lottery tickets and putting on concerts. Most of the €100,000 cost of the repairs will come from Pego Town Hall and the Diputacion provincial council, but the brotherhood has advanced €7,500 for the scaffolding.

Formentera day trips BALEARIA will recommence its Denia-Formentera ferry link on April 29. The Denia-based shipping line runs the only direct link from the Spanish mainland and the Formentera ferry will operate until October. The fast Ramon Llull which can carry 477 passengers and 90 vehicles will sail each day from Denia at 9am, returning at 9pm, bringing day trips within everyone’s reach. Two journeys in each direction will be added to the service in July and August.

Passerby finds stun grenade By Linda Hall BOMB disposal experts were sent to La Albufereta after a hand grenade was found there recently. After spotting it in the early hours of the morning, a

shocked passerby advised the police who immediately cordoned-off the area. A TEDAX bomb disposal team was summoned, who identified the grenade as a stun or flashbang grenade. This is a non-lethal device

used to disorient an adversary’s sense with a blinding flash of light and an intensely loud noise exceeding 170 decibels. After its removal by the explosives’ experts the grenade was destroyed after an analysis to determine its origin.

It’s all go on Montgo THE Montgo National Park’s governing board has a new president, environmentally friendly Joan Sala. Denia-born Sala is Marina Alta’s spokesman for Accio-Ecologista-Agro, and has played a key role in protecting the national park that straddles both Denia and Javea. Sala has headed Agro since 1988, a year after Montgo was declared a protected area, and has represented the ecologists on the park’s board of governors. For the first time the president of this advisory

committee is not a politician and the revolving door, that in the past has propelled Marina Alta ex-mayors onto the Montgo board, has remained stationary on this occasion. Sala acquired fame, or notoriety, in the 90’s for battling with developers, who appropriated protected Montgo land after moving, and he is still determined to reclaim as much public land as possible, he said. He said he was thrilled by his new post and stressed that his objective was the preservation and protection of the park, which he described as “the apple of his eye.”

A nutty diet is not always good NO milk caused problems for young baby By Linda Hall A VALENCIA baby fed exclusively on almond milk and vegetable-based products developed scurvy, La Fe doctors found. Doctors at the Valencia City hospital who detected the case recently published their findings in Pediatrics magazine. The baby was initially fed on formula and vaccinated, but developed dermatitis soon afterwards. He was taken to a doctor who recommended al-

mond milk and almond flour supplemented with sesame powder, malt derived from wholegrain rice, millet and probiotics. Some months later, needing medical treatment for bone problems the baby was found to have scurvy caused by insufficient Vitamin C. At 11 months his diet was changed to include milk, meat, fruit, vegetables, cereal and vitamin supplements, wrote Isidro Vitoria, author of the Pediatrics article, who advised against replacing mother’s milk or formula with vegetable substitutes.

Now a time of reckoning UNPAID bills for dubious or fictitious outlays have turned up in inland Benilloba (population 789). “We’ve found two types,” said Mayor Ana Delia Gisbert who took over last year. “For some we have no record, but are being asked to settle bills going back to 2011. Others are on record, but we can’t pay them because they correspond to non-existent items.”

Gisbert gave as an example a €5,460 bill for Christmas fiestas in 2014. “We know that what was done cost nothing like this amount,” she said. There was another bill for painting the castle erected for the Moors and Christians fiestas, although this was never carried out, Gisbert maintained. “Disorganisation, personality cults and lack of vision are what we have found at the town hall,” she lamented.

3 looted dead woman’s account A NUN, an ex-councillor and a business administrator practically emptied the bank account of a deceased teacher. The teacher had spent the last years of her life at Las Angelicas, a residence for the elderly in Oliva that was run by Sisters of the Sacred Heart and Holy Angels. She died in November 2011 without heirs or leaving a will and the €44,563 in her bank account at the time of her death reverted to the Generalitat Valenciana. At this point, a Valencia City court heard, the Mother Superior of Las Angelicas put in a €6,272 bill against the deceased woman’s account for supposed repairs to her room. A former councillor who was the ‘gestor’ attending to Las Angelicas’ administration and paperwork decided to emulate the Mother Superior and successfully put through an invoice for €2,950. On five more occasions he and a local businessman succeeded in pocketing a total of €16,678 from the dead teacher’s account. They also paid other people to present non-existent bills, eventually taking €39,902. The Guardia Civil launched an investigation after receiving a complaint in 2015 and made a total of five arrests. The money has now been returned and as all pleaded guilty they received prison sentences totalling 27 months which they can avoid by paying a daily fine of €6.

The area was earmarked for development in 2001 when the contract was won by Alicante businessman Enrique Ortiz. Plans for 20 tower blocks and 3,970 homes on 667,000 square metres of land were drawn up in 2004 and

Benidorm’s last remaining parcel of rural land close to the centre area was cleared. Plans to eliminate the privately-owned open-air ‘mercadillo’ (street market) close to the Hotel Pueblo were never carried out and the pro-

posed development was dogged by objections, appeals and court cases from the outset. Ortiz has now renounced the project and the Cs spokesman complained that the town hall has not kept its promise to clear the area.

In addition, they were considered a method of untraced money laundering, although Dutch police have just arrested 10 people for laundering €20 million through the system.

World football’s richest clubs

REAL MADRID: Earned the largest amount of revenue for the 11th year in a row. the previous year and in itself a record. Surprise entries included New-

castle United, Everton and West Ham, with both Manchester City and Arsenal earning more than cur-

rent underperformers Chelsea. The list only looks at revenues earned and does not take into ac-

count club debts or the fact that Real Madrid is banned from signing any new young players for two seasons.

EACH year, the giant accounting firm Deloitte publishes a list of the richest football clubs in the world, all of which are from Europe and nine of whom are English clubs. For the 11th year in a row, Real Madrid earned the largest amount of revenue in the 2014/2015 season pocketing a total of €577 million, whilst its biggest rival Barcelona nudged Manchester United into third place with revenues of €560.8 million. Thanks to their exit from the Champion’s League last season, Manchester United only managed to earn €519.5 million, but they are still the largest earning club from England and with a return to Champion’s League, expect a bumper financial return in this new season. The top 20 contains nine English teams, four Italian, three Spanish (including Atletico Madrid), three German and one French, which between them have earned a whopping €6.6 billion, 8 per cent up on

BARCLAYS BANK: Intends to sell its credit card operations in Spain and Portugal. FOLLOWING the sale of its Spanish banking operation to La Caixa which was completed in 2015, Barclays has now indicated its intention to sell its credit card operations in both Spain and Portugal. It is said that there is already interest from Spanish bank Santander, as well as an American private equity company. Although Barclays did not have to go ‘cap in hand’ to the British government during the

deepest of the recession unlike other banks such as Lloyds, it did have to accept foreign equity investment, and has been subject to intense scrutiny by both the British and American governments for a number of its activities. As part of its three-year plan to rationalise its business and concentrate on core operations in Britain and America, as well as parts of Africa, it has been divesting itself of businesses in

Europe, so this is the next stage of its retrenchment. The sale will naturally increase the volume of funds it has access to. None of the parties who may be involved in the transaction have made any comment, and there may be as many as four interested parties, but it is common knowledge that Barclays wishes to see a relatively speedy sale with a target for the end of March. Despite the difference in size

of the populations of the two countries, Barclaycard has a much larger share of the Portuguese market at 20 per cent, with 460,000 customers when compared to the 6 per cent and 250,000 customers it has in Spain. Although no firm figure has been announced, it has been suggested by the BBC that if a sale takes place, it is likely to raise between €300 million and €600 million.

AS regular perusers of this blurb are aware, as much as I welcome your letters, I don’t normally enter into discussions concerning their often wide-ranging opinions. Basically, because it can lead to the column getting bogged down with a missive exchange that can become negative and somewhat insular. On this occasion however I do take advantage of my right of replying to the email published on this week’s letters page. To me this is typical of the ‘glass half full’ attitude that has created most of these problems in the first place. Firstly, I take umbrage as being portrayed as some kind of rebel rouser, stirring up unrest and provoking confrontation at every opportunity. I’m not a warmonger, I simply report the facts as I see them. I would love to state that all was well, and everyone at peace

with each other on this glorious planet of ours. I would be delighted to observe that loving thy neighbour was the ambition of every human being in existence.

Unfortunately, with the unrelenting expansion of organisations whose sole ambition is to obliterate all those who disagree with their doctrines, none of these Shangri

Whether those in denial choose to believe it or not, we are embroiled in a conflict that could, if we don’t at least recognise it, result in the end of our civilisation as we know it. Frankly, to say these acts of war are only happening in a few places, and there are hundreds of cities that are not being attacked, is pure unadulterated, dangerous bunkum. Try telling the New York victims of 9/11 that all of them dying was OK because it wasn’t happening in Chicago, or those who perished in the Paris atrocities that it wasn’t so bad, because Lyon was peaceful that day. Convince the maimed and slaughtered citizens of London they should be thankful that while they were being attacked, the streets of Manchester spent the day terrorist free! Would you seriously ban them all? RE: “Can this alien bunch be an asset?” This obviously includes Syrian schoolchildren and babies whose homes have been reduced to rubble by years of bombing. Would you seriously ban them all, leaving them in roofless ruins with no water, sanitation, electricity, food or medical aid until they die? Oh, sorry, that’s Donald Trump’s answer, isn’t it? Until recently, Syria was a modern, wealthy country with a welleducated and productive workforce. Now it’s been bombed to hell. Those who manage to flee are mostly fit young men precisely because they are more able to escape a war zone. Some fit women and children manage to escape too. There’s been a lot in the news this week about the Zika virus, which many had never heard of before, so we asked Dr Perez Belmonte to answer a few questions about it. -What is zika? It is a virus which comes mainly from the equatorial areas of America, Asia and Africa. -How is it transmitted? It is transmitted via mosquitoes, which can also carry other viruses which cause more wellknown illnesses including yellow or dengue fever. -What are the symptoms? Zika usually starts with the appearance of skin lesions accompanied by fever, muscle and joint pain and headaches, although in more serious cases breathing problems or neurological issues can occur. Symptoms usually last between four and seven days. There are debates at the moment as to whether pregnant women affected by the virus can give birth to babies with microcephaly (smaller than average heads), although

there is no conclusive data to confirm this. -Is it dangerous? Generally it is a mild illness and patients tend to recover within a week. -How can we avoid catching it? This type of mosquito is not present in developed countries so catching it is virtually impossible. In countries where the mosquito is found the best way to avoid contagion is to use repellents, mosquito nets and long sleeved clothes etc to avoid being bitten. -Is there a cure or treatments? Currently treatments concentrate on alleviating symptoms, treating muscular pain with pain killers, skin eruptions with anti-histamines, etc. Rest is also recommended while symptoms last. Once the illness passes the patient is cured, and there are generally no after effects.

Minor surgery is conducted on site, and fractures can be dealt with by the orthopaedic surgeon.

The clinic’s main goal is to keep patients out of hospital, and diagnostics represent a large part of the work undertaken by the clinic. X-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, cardiograms and laboratory tests (including blood tests and Warfarin tests) are amongst the many on offer. They have equipment available for 24 hour ECGs (or longer, if required), whereby the patient wears a small machine which measures the heart function over an extended period. Twenty-four hour blood pressure tests can be carried out too. Similarly, sleep tests to help deal with issues of snoring, where the patient wears the recorder overnight. This can also establish whether a patient has sleep apnoea. Maternal care is another service offered by the clinic. A 24-hour GP service with telephone support and home visits is available, covering the area from Villajoyosa to Altea. All their doctors speak English too.

The two in-house dentists are kept busy, as in addition to general d e n t i s t r y, t h e y o ff e r c r o w n s a n d bridges, dentures, root canal treatment, implants and cleaning. They also specialise in looking after children, special-needs patients and the dental phobic. For those averse to needles, gas is available. Same-day dental repairs can be carried out too. Home care is another service on offer, with trained nurses available to visit patients at home and deal with all sorts of issues – wound dressing, help with showering or bathing, helping diabetic patients, nutritional advice, care and control of medicinal administration, terminal care and even taking in meals. Phones can cause back pain MORE and more people are suffering from kyphosis, or hunchback and too much phone or tablet use could be to blame. Kyphosis is a curvature of the spine that causes the top of the back to appear rounded and a curve of over 45 degrees is considered excessive.

It can be caused by spinal injury, osteoporosis, spinal arthritis, poor posture and the aging process, but experts say modern technology is also bringing on more cases as people have a more sedentary lifestyle and spend too much time hunched over desks at work. Around 10

million adults spend more than seven hours a day on gadgets putting their health at risk. A survey of 2,000 people in the UK found that 27 per cent of those questioned had visited a healthcare professional such as a GP or physiotherapist due to back pain in the past year.

Our Plaice in the Sun - try out the only fish and chip shop in Albir THEIR traditional British menu is attractive to the Scandinavian community too By Keith Baker WHEN a new business opens in a town the locals like to go along and find out about it. That’s certainly what’s happened in Albir with Our Plaice in the Sun - the town’s only Fish and Chip shop. It is owned and run by two couples - Paul and Debbie, and Gary and Karen. Paul and Gary first met when they worked together in Calpe, and their friendships developed from there. Both couples came to Spain more than 10 years ago, and for various reasons returned to the UK for a period, but were drawn back here eventually. They found the perfect location for their dream venture, and did all the decorating before opening in September.

RUN TOGETHER: Gary and Karen, and Paul and Debbie. Paul is pleased at how quickly they have built up a solid customer base amongst the locals. They see a good number of tourists too. There have been Fish and Chip

shops in Gary’s family for years, and his grandfather and dad were fishmongers, so is a natural step for him. Gary has experience as a chef, but he shares the cooking with Paul, who

learned his skills in the Merchant Navy, then honed them when he and Debbie had a pub in the UK. Their customers are not all British. It transpires their traditional menu is attractive to the Scandinavian community too. Whilst chatting with Spanish customers, they often find they have previously experienced Fish and Chips in the UK, and come to Our Plaice in the Sun to remind themselves of what makes them so special. It’s not just amongst the locals that Our Plaice in the Sun has developed a good reputation though. They have had people come along on their mobility scooters all the way from Benidorm. Running a business as two couples is working well here. Each couple can get some time off, knowing that

the shop is in good hands, but they clearly all get along so well together that even before the first customer of the day walks in there is already an inviting atmosphere. Not all of their customers eat in, of course, and the take-away side of the business is doing well too. They have just introduced a new lunchtime special menu, available Mondays to Thursdays between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, which offers two courses - home-made starter and main, or main and home-made dessert - for €7.95, including a drink. New ambulance for Red Cross in Javea WILL be used to transport local people to day centres By Keith Baker JAVEA’S Red Cross has taken delivery of a new ambulance, thanks to three local charities. The Grand Lodge of Valencia and charity shops Roundabout and The Original have raised the €64,000 needed to make the purchase.

It has taken two years to raise the amazing sum. The ambulance has been specially adapted with a ramp, and can accommodate nine people or four wheelchairs. It will be used to transport people from Javea, Gata and Pedreguer to day centres, as well as collecting food for the food bank that is donated by various supermarkets.

They took gifts for each of the children, which had been personally chosen according to their personalities, and they laid on a feast and a party for all to enjoy. The y a ls o took a long a clown to entertain, and an artist to paint faces. Adjoined to the orphanage is a facility for adults with learning difficulties,

and t hey wer e al l i nvi t ed al ong t o shar e t he Happy Day with the children. They weren’t forgotten when it became time to give out the presents, as Corazon Expres had chosen per sonal i sed presents for each of them too. It is important to the charity that they don’t just give generic gifts, so they ask for information on the residents beforehand so that they can t ake an appr opr i at e gi f t along with them. It was a good day for the st aff t oo, as t he char i t y

takes over all responsibility so that they can have a wellearned break. At the moment Corazon Expres lays on Happy Days at f i ve i nst i t ut i ons i n t he ar ea. Uses of fallen avocados THERE are many healthy things you can do, so don’t compost them, eat them eathemthem Dick Handscombe

THE other day I was asked after a day of strong winds, ‘Can fallen avocados be added to the compost heap?’ My reply was ‘Yes but why waste them?’ For they normally don’t bruise and there are so many healthy things one can do with them. These include beneficial vitamins, minerals, omega three and six fatty acids, and energy giving calories that combine to produce a good rich taste and enjoyable creamy texture. In groves of avocados most trees are sheltered from windy weather, but individual plants in gardens are often unprotected so a few immature small fruits with weak stems fall daily in windy weather once they weigh about 50 grams. The best thing is to collect them up and place in a bowl in the kitchen to use as soon as they dent slightly when pressed gently. So what can you do with them? 1. Eat the small ones raw like an apple. To make it easy eat

USES: You can eat them raw, add them to a salad, make an omelette or even make a face mask. the skin and soft unripe kernel. Fallens then become a useful impromptu snack when working in the garden. 2. When it’s time for breakfast make an omelette or scrambled egg using a soft, fried filling combining finely cut green and red peppers, one or two cut up avocados and pine nuts. 3. Make a mousse to serve on slices of apple or bread. Skin and stone a few small avocados and mix with a little yoghurt and lemon juice, a little salt, and plenty of pepper to taste us-

ing a pestle and mortar. 4. Make a variety of avocado based salads incorporating as many tasty fresh salad leaves as possible from the garden. 5. Add to stews as a taste enhancer and thickener. 6. Make an avocado and broccoli soup now young broccoli heads can be harvested. 7. Make a winter face mask. 8. Mash one and use to massage muscular pains away. 9. If some become overripe add the flesh into the bottom half of compost when repotting

plants. The minerals, vitamins and source of moisture will help to stimulate root growth. 10. Then yes, those unused and uneatable can be added to your compost heap or fed to hens and cockerels. Other uses and dietary benefits found on the internet include bone strengthening, instant source of energy, mild cancer prevention, aids metabolism, appetite suppressant, rejuvenates skin and as an aphrodisiac. Apparently for this reason avocadoes were banned

from monastery diets in the middle ages. If you are tempted by the above ideas, but unfortunately rarely see an avocado on your tree in spite of having thousands, even millions of flowers, there are a number of things you can do. 1. Hang jars of honey in the tree to attract pollinating bees and other insects. 2. Plant avocado trees near trees that flower at the same time and are good bee attractors, such as a male carob tree.

3. If you have the popular Haas variety of avocado trees, plant another variety such as Zutano or Endranol which have a different timing of male and female flower openings. If there is no room in the ground the second tree could be grown in a large container. The problem is that avocado flowers are bisexual and on alternate days the male or female organs are in action for half the day. ON a recent visit to the mother country, we happened to drive past a house near our village that was once occupied by one of life’s great characters, a retired colonel of the Irish Guards, known to his friends and fellow ex-officers as Seamus. He was an aristocrat through and through, but treated everyone he came into contact with in exactly the same uncondescending way, be they royalty or street cleaners. His language when telling one of his famous stories to the boys, was barrack room vernacular at its bawdy best, but when engaging ladies in conversation, he was the epitome of charm and courteousness.

MANNERS: Due decorum and a stiff upper lip were required in all situations. Kissing hands or tipping his hat were as natural to him as eating peas off a knife is to me. His mother was of genteel birth he told me, and the emphasis in her day was to mar-

ry well and acquire a husband from the aristocracy or upper classes. But she had other rebellious thoughts and furthered her education at a school for young ladies, the establish-

ment being a stately home of some magnificence, and ruled by a principal of formidable demeanour. One evening over dessert, the elderly butler approached unhurriedly, and bending

down painfully to engage the principal’s ear, said: “Begging pardon Ma’am, no cause for alarm but the ‘ouse is on fire.” There was a sharp intake of breath around the table, and I suspect a hint of nervous flatulence, but no noticeable reaction from the principal who, ramrod straight, informed her ‘gels’ that they should finish the meal with due decorum. Nothing, not even a raging inferno, would interrupt their set routine and they were eventually led to the safety of the gardens in a dignified manner. It was an illustration of the now sadly defunct, British stiff upper lip. The colonel is no longer with us, but he was one of those rare examples from the upper classes who have no pretentions regarding status and treat everyone with the respect and courtesy they merit, regardless of background or upbringing.

THE east coast of America is normally pretty well-equipped to deal with snow, but the weather conditions in the last week have caused untold difficulties. It is estimated that at least 31 people have died due to car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning or heart attacks caused by shovelling snow. The storm brought snow from the Gulf Coast to New England, with near-record snowfalls measured from Washington DC to New York City causing people to be cut off, and roads, train stations and airports to be closed, as well as mass purchasing of food, leaving shelves empty and some people hungry. Central Park in New York, with just under 30 inches of snow, saw the second highest fall since records began in 1869, and all of the main freeways on Long Island were

Plenty of children appreciated the fact that schools were closed, and those with skis had an unexpected opportunity to enjoy their hobby, as many companies and government departments decided it was safer to close rather than face the risk of injury to their staff. Washington Zoo’s Giant Panda Tian Tian rolling around in the snow, and even a Maryland man in a panda costume managed to attract 500,000 viewers doing the same thing. Despite the fact that part of the largest economy in the western world was paralysed for a few days, it doesn’t appear to have had a major effect on the country, although once the thaw sets in, flooding could

become a major headache and hit the insurance industry particularly badly. With the storm heading across the Atlantic, both Britain and Ireland can look forward to an extended period of cold weather, and even Spain can anticipate a bit of a fall out with some chilly nights, although it is unlikely to be particularly uncomfortable. The storm caused people to be cut off, and roads, train stations and airports to be closed, as well as mass purchasing of food, leaving shelves empty

A stalemate for Spanish Parliament WE make no apologies for returning to the matter of the Spanish election, and the fact that at the time of writing these observations there has been very little progress in the formation of a new government. This means that the old government continues to run the country, even though it no longer has a formal mandate and does not have a majority in the Cortes. King Felipe, having met with the leaders of every party, starting with the ‘minnows’ on January 18 and finishing with the main contenders on January 22, issued a formal invitation to Mariano Rajoy to form a minority government. The interim Prime Minister declined to do so, not on the basis that he would never agree to run the country, but on the basis that he couldn’t agree at the moment as he didn’t hold sufficient seats to allow him to be elected as Prime Minister, as those opposed to him were in the majority. To this end therefore, he has indicated that he will keep trying to find a compromise with the other parties to allow him to create a workable coalition. To some extent this is quite a clever ploy, because in theory, he could carry on like this until October 2016 before a new election can be called, but if he agreed to accept the call to form a government and was defeated then the election would have to take place within two months.

When older cats behave this way, it’s a good sign that they’re happy and content.

SPANISH property enquiries in January 2016 have got off to a flying start, and it’s the UK buyers that are leading the way. All indicators confirm that UK property buyers will continue to dominate the property market in Spain, especially along the Spanish Costas and Balearics, and that there should be an increase in UK buyers compared to 2015. Recent data from major property portals in the UK confirm that Spain is the most searched destination for property buyers, well ahead of France, Spain’s nearest rival, and other destinations. Also, official data has recently

UK market will continue to be the number one buyer of property in Spain in 2016. There has been a lot of speculation with regards to property prices in Spain in recent years, and we can now safely say that prices have bottomed out in the majority of regions. Recent official data show an increase in Spain’s property prices at around 1 per cent to 2.9 per cent at the end of 2015, but if we take out Barcelona and Madrid price increases, the prices on the Costas and Mallorca haven’t increased in most areas, and only very slightly in prime locations. The important point to remember on pricing is that we have turned a corner, prices have stopped falling and 2016 should see more price increases in Spain, especially in prime locations, and as I stated last week 2016 will be a buyers’ market. Another positive sign the property

industry has got off to a flying start in January is the large number of investors buying properties from Spanish banks. We will see many more investor transactions in 2016, especially along the Costas. Investors and developers buying and refurbishing these developments that have lain dormant for so many years, are bringing them back to life again. This is good news for everyone selling a property, there’s nothing worse than trying to sell your home that is located close to an unfinished development, and once the developments are finished it will help increase the property prices in the area. Spanish property is undervalued NEW analysis from a world economic body highlights Spain By Matthew Elliott IN news that will come as little surprise to expatriates living in Spain, the Organisation for Economic Development (OECD) has declared that the Spanish property market is undervalued after conducting comprehensive analysis across the world. Spain, Portugal and Italy, all traditional markets for overseas British buyers, were named as the among the most undervalued, while Britain and Sweden in particular swung in the opposite direction. The OECD research pits local property prices against standardised wages, and set it against a long term average, with the analysis taking place over a decade.

Spain was marked as undervalued by 26 per cent, which is attributed to oversupply, a lack of infrastructure and no significant demand. Many Spanish banks are frantically trying to sell off properties still on their books at rock-bottom prices, having lent heavily to developers before the crash. In comparison, the UK is estimated to be 7 per cent overpriced, while in Sweden the figure is 114 per cent. Scandinavia is likely to see a massive housing boom in the near future, contributed to the shortage, while Eastern Europe and Turkey in particular are expected to see an influx of foreign buyers capitalising on favourable market conditions.

A NEW report has indicated that rental prices in Spain saw a marked increase in 2015 with an average rise of 3.3 per cent, leading to a median â‚Ź7 per square metre. Released by the Idealist website, the analysis also detailed the compelling regional differences across a fragmented national market. With Barcelona continuing its rise as a leading European capital, Catalonian land-

lords demanded a steep 13.3 per cent rise in their rents, while the Balearics saw an eyewatering 10.3 per cent rise. Both were significantly above the capital Madrid at a more reasonable 7.6 per cent, although it retains the highest price per square metre at â‚Ź10.5. When limiting the analysis to cities, Malaga posted an enormous increase of 13.5 per cent, in marked opposition to Jaen

which saw a 7.9 per cent decline. This two-speed nature of the market was highlighted by regional declines in Galicia of -3.7 per cent, and Extremadura of -3.4 per cent. The creation and distribution of employment is expected to be key to how the market develops in 2016, but the patterns outlined last year are expected to continue, showing little in the way of major surprises.

The bonnet goes up. Then it happens, the sharp intake of breath. “What? What?” Then the explanation, the kafluferla valve has sprung a leak and the shlaygool seal needs replacing. “Hold on a minute, it was all fine before I brought it for the other little thing that needed doing. Absolutely no connection? Pure coincidence, even though the pipe going into the thingamajig is at the other end of the pipe you just replaced on the whatchamacallit. So how much is all this going to cost?” “Well even though it’s just this tiny seal that has gone, they don’t sell that bit on its

own. Yeah, you have to buy a whole new gangle valve which has to come from the main dealer in (fill in the place that is furthest away from your garage).” “The cost?” “Well it’s going to be about €500 with fitting!” “OK let me think about it and I’ll let you know tomorrow.” And off I go. Now here is a tip, never believe that every mechanic knows what he is talking about, because on the way home I pop into my local garage that has been there for years and ask him to have a quick look at my car. He lifts the bonnet up, has a look round, gets a screwdriver and another tool that makes a clicking noise when you move it in any direction. A few minutes later he comes out from under the bonnet and says he’s fixed it. “How much?” “Give me €10.” Sorry, what about the €500 bit of kit that was needed? He then informs me the only problem was that whoever did the original repair simply didn’t put the other end back properly! Naturally I went back to the original garage and told them in no uncertain terms what I thought of them. The moral of the story is it doesn’t matter how far a fish swims it never sweats… Or maybe always get a second opinion.

New speed radars CAN also detect if a driver is using a mobile phone AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

NEW DETECTORS: Can tell if a driver is on a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt. A NEW range of radar speed detectors installed by the DGT not only monitor for vehicles travelling in excess of the maximum permitted speed limit, but they are also able to tell if a driver is not wearing a seatbelt or is talking on a mobile phone. The cameras, which have been installed in 70 locations across the country already, look similar to the existing devices, but can capture images at 50 frames per second, which results in higher definition still images being captured, which result in more details being collected and then analysed, such as the driver’s current activities and recording the vehicle information.

The aim of the investment in the devices is to improve road safety, with the latest data revealing that in the most recent campaign 1,349 drivers were reported for not using seatbelts, and another 1,113 for using a phone whilst driving. With the Pegasus radar already capable of capturing this detail, and recording the necessary evidential data, these latest ground-based cameras add to the arsenal of monitoring tools. Further data also reveals that 77 per cent of all people killed in vehicles are not wearing a seatbelt, and so by changing attitudes through enforcement, a significant number of lives can be saved.

With the car group hiring a new executive to oversee connectivity and connected car services globally, the alliance plan to launch more than 10 vehicles with autonomous drive technology in the next four years. They confirmed the launch of a range of vehicles with autonomous capabilities in Europe, United States, Japan and China up to 2020, and that the technology will be installed on mainstream, mass-market cars at affordable prices.

In addition, Renault-Nissan will launch a suite of new connectivity applications that will make it easier for people to stay connected to work, entertainment and social networks. This year will mark the debut of vehicles with ‘single-lane control’, a feature that allows cars to drive autonomously on motorways, including in heavy, stop-andgo traffic. In 2018, they will launch vehicles with ‘multiple-lane control’, and 2020 will see the launch of ‘intersection autonomy’.

Benitachell Bowls Club ON Thursday, January 21, a BBC team travelled to Calpe for the return leg of the annual Friendship Cup. Although taking with them a 39 shot difference in their favour, the BBC team was not complacent, as they knew their opponents would put up a stern fight on their home rink. This proved to be so. Fortunately the rink skipped by Iris Gardiner, even after losing 11 shots in the closing ends, ran out comfortable winners 26 – 12. The rink, skipped by Peter Griffiths, saw the game standing eight all at nine ends and 13 all at 16 ends. However, with two singles on the final two ends they clinched the contest 15 – 13. Dudley Davies’ rink had a close game for the first third being six – six at six ends. But fighting bravely, it ended up 18 – 26. Richard Chamberlain, skipping the rink lead by wife Jinty, opened with a two but struggled to keep in touch with the opponents until they secured a four on the 11th end. Again, keeping the shot difference in hand, they finished 10 – 18 down. Totalling up the shots and whichever way you looked at it, it was 69 – 69 on the day with BBC scoring on two more ends. However, with their home score of 39 the cup was returned to BBC for another year. Tigers vs Calpe Fantastic weather, good company and good food. That is the good news, the bad news is

that the ‘Tigers’ were well beaten on all four rinks, with Calpe taking the full 10 points. BBC LIONS vs BBC JAGUARS From the start the Jaguars led overall, and after 14 ends BBC were drawing on two games, up on one game and down on one game. It could have gone either way but luckily for the Lions they won. On rink three Rob Hawker, David Browne, Feli Croft played Pam Coombes, Jack Chamberlian and Harry Chick. A tight game all the way ending 15 - 14 to the Jags. Rink four was the lionesses Linda Richards, Yvonne Browne and Lynda Warnes who fought to ultimately come out victorious, with a final score of 24-12 to the lionesses. Rink six saw Rod Warnes, Jacquie Roberts and Dave Roberts playing Mick Adams, Peter Griffiths and John Coates, Daves team scored a five to give them the lead, and with a four on the 16th end clinched the game 21-11. Rink seven saw Annie Jones, Jeff Richards and Trevor Neale playing Christine Mawson, Richard Gardiner and Derek Mawson, where victory was snatched from Derek and his team. The bowling on this very difficult rink was excellent and the match could have gone either way. Final score was 1813 to the lions. Lions 77 shots eight points Jaguars 51 shots and two points. Winter League Report Benitachell Bowls Winter League team was away to Emerald Isle this week. It was the first opportunity this season

to ‘do a double’, having already beaten Emerald Isle at home in the first game of the season. Dudley Davies, Clive Langan, Carol Davies and John Avey had a terrific game. The last end saw BBC 19 – 20, but Skip Dudley with his last perfect bowl, secured the shot to draw level at 20 all. Jeff Richards, Tony Lawley, Derek Mawson and Linda Richards commanded a 13 shot lead by the 12th end, and went on to win 19 – nine. Skip Maggie Lawley, Jacquie Roberts, Mary Cockell and Tim Woodcock had a score of 14 – eight on the 10th end. Emerald Isle staged a fight back but once again BBC fought back and secured the win 20 – 19. John Coates, Bob Cockell, Harry Chick and Christine Mawson dominated their game, going on to achieve an excellent win of 24 – 16 securing a further two points for BBC. Skip David Roberts, Iris Gardiner, Steve Griffin and Bert McLean fought out an evenly balanced encounter, but were eventually squeezed out with a final score of 11 – 14. The Berleen saw Richard Gardiner, Carole Nicholas, Rebecca Langan and Lynne Avey fight an evenly balanced game only losing by four shots with a final score of 14 – 18. This was an impressive away performance by the squad with an overall shot difference of 16 shots (94 – 78), and secured second place in the league for BBC. Orba Warblers Golf Society VISITED Alicante Golf on a very pleasant January day A GOOD turnout was seen last week for their visit to Alicante Golf. After a cool start the sun came out big time giving them a very pleasant January day. The course was in good condition with quicker than usual greens. This big and difficult

course gives little opportunity for birdies, scores of par are always at a premium and this day was no exception. Division two was a tightly fought contest with two players scoring 36 points, David Edwards (Hcp 26.5), just edging

out Barbara Pollitt (Hcp 23.1), for the top spot on count back. Jan Wilson completed the podium with 34 points (Hcp 18.5). Jan also made it a good day by picking up the nearest the pin prize on the very difficult par three, 17th. Division one

was secured by John Daniels (Hcp 17.0), with 36 points, just holding off vice captain David Knight (Hcp 8.6), with 35 points. Tim Harrison (Hcp 15.2), secured third spot with 34 points. Other nearest the pin winners

on the day were Glynn Braidley on hole three, the president Art Sullivan on hole six, and Jim Rogers on hole eight. Next game for the Warblers will be at Alenda on Wednesday February 3, for a Texas Scramble.
