By Buster Smith THE day after the mass march against gender violence on Saturday November 7, two more victims were added to the list of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners. In Lliria, Alicante, a mother and daughter were shot dead in broad daylight by a man aged 40

years old, who was the ex-partner of the woman, killing them both in front of their three-year-old child. The man fled immediately after committing the murders in a green Renault Scenic, which was recovered shortly afterwards by police, and the accused later gave himself up at the headquarters of the Guardia Civil in Va-

lencia that evening, entering with a lawyer. According to sources in Lliria, the man accused of murdering the two women, had previous charges for abuse and a restraining order in place. Town halls throughout the province have given their condolences and shown their support for the fight against gender violence by holding a minute’s silence.

Fireworks light up the skies over Benidorm BENIDORM became a multicolored landscape during the fireworks’ display put on for its annual fiestas, the largest of the year and a special one which is celebrating the 275th anniversary of the Virgen del Sufragio. The show included over 90 kilos of fireworks, which were launched into the night sky in a frenzy of colour and light lasting five minutes. The spectacular display on Wednesday used an incredible 1,200 kilos of pyrotechnics, one of the largest displays ever in the town, and lasted 24 minutes.

LOCAL pub owners Winnie and Tommy Quantrell, who run the Hepburns pub in Albir, recently held a remembrance service, which was attended by over 100 people, including exservicemen and women and many local expatriates. The service included wreath-laying and hymns, auctions, raffles and live entertainment from ‘Vera Lynn’ and ‘The Andrews Sisters’, and was also attended by Drew, a bagpiper who is an ex-serviceman and performs at many local functions. The auction raised €1,322.60 which will be donated to the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes appeals.

Mayor tries to hide spending MAYOR reported to have spent €150,000 on office reforms

COUNCILLOR IGUAL: Accuses mayor of a lack of transparency. By Buster Smith VICENTE IGUAL, a Partido Popular (PP) councillor in Valencia, has reported that the mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribo, has spent €150,000 on furniture and reforming offices, claiming the head of the tripartite group has also attempted to hide the information, illustrating a lack of transparency. The mayor, whose coalition party gained power this year, were elected partly due to their insistence on transparency, claiming to end corruption,

so the claims made by the PP regarding their excessive spending and attempts to hide information will no doubt embarrass the government. According to the PP, the entire €150,000 has been spent on reforming the mayor’s offices, as well as offices belonging to others within the coalition party, although they had previously claimed no major changes were really necessary. When asked to clarify the expenditure it was stated that staff had too much work and there were not enough to collect the data.

Auditorium project changed PLAN to convert disused cinema would not be viable By Buster Smith THE Javea Town Hall has abandoned its plans to convert and rehabilitate an old cinema into a €2.3 million auditorium after experts warned that the building would not comply with rules and regulations as a theatre. The old cinema in the centre of the town has been closed for over 30 years, and although the local government has had big ideas on converting the disused building into a functional auditorium and architectural marvel, recent visits by technicians have discovered that the plans would not meet with legal requirements in order to be used for theatrical purposes, nor was it designed well enough to be adapted for such use.

The capacity would also not have been suitable, with space for just 285 spectators. Mayor Jose Chulvi has said that they will now rethink the idea and have presented plans to create a new auditorium instead with capacity up to 800 people, which will cost the municipality €2.3 million and is planned to be constructed next to the Music Conservatory, the institute Llidó Antoni. The t own has been gi ven a €580,000 grant from the Alicante Council and they will invest the remaining amount needed to complete the project. The building will be the second major cultural infrastructure of the Marina Alta, after the auditorium recently constructed in Teulada-Moraira, which was designed by architect Francisco Mangado.

Benissa shows its support against gender violence THE municipality of Benissa, Alicante has placed a banner on the facade with the slogan ‘Against Gender Violence’ with the intention of raising awareness of domestic and gender violence, to sensitise the public to the issue, one which occurs all too often in the province. The banner was placed on

November 7, a day of national awareness on the issue, which saw the participation of various local women’s groups including La Colectiva from Benissa. The banner will also be present for the November 25 International Day against gender violence and will be hung from the building each and

of the wooded area, eradication of invasive species and recovery of the banks. However, the second phase of

development has not happened, due to lack of finance, leaving the area starved of water.

Benidorm animal support THE Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, has signed a collaboration agreement with the local animal protection. The agreement has enabled the centre to purchase a new vehicle. The contribution adds to the monies already provided by the town hall, amounting to €30,000 and comes shortly after the mayor visited the facilities of the SPAP to inspect the improvements and maintenance work that has been carried out, and to find out what were the most urgent requirements of the centre. The mayor is committed to exploring new avenues and ensuring support is given to facilitate the collection, maintenance, custody and control of stray and abandoned animals in Benidorm.

Hospital highlights child malnutrition PHOTOS can be purchased for â‚Ź40 which goes towards combating the problem in Kenya By Buster Smith DENIA Hospital is hosting a photographic exhibition on the problem of child malnutrition in the area of Turkana, Kenya. An incentive from resident paediatrician Luis Santos, proceeds from the sale of the photographs, each of which have been given a symbolic price of â‚Ź40, go towards combating child malnutrition. The exhibition, named Turkana Child, includes scenes of the huge effort made by international volunteers to alleviate child malnutrition which plagues the area. The purpose is to raise funds to improve the nutritional status and health infrastructure of the Kenyan region of Turkana. Marina Salud, the company which runs the hospital, and the local Rotary Club have given their support to the projects from Horstmann and Aztivate,

which have been operating for 15 years. The project combines the work of several international organisations whose aim is to train and lead new generations in the region, providing eating plans and health checks at schools and sending volunteer paediatricians and nurses. Children who are diagnosed as suffering from severe malnutrition are taken to the local hospital in Lokitaung where the foundation has a number of volunteer nurses and paediatricians available to help treat the patients. Some of the more extreme cases are required to be transported to another hospital, some five hours away; unfortunately, for many the trip alone is too costly to be able to afford. Incentives such as the photographic exhibition at Denia Hospital are helping to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

Ski trips 2016 BENIDORM Youth Department has organised two ski trips for early next year. The first is to Grand Valira, from February 7-12, and the second from February 28 until March 4. The trip will cost €465 and includes transport, full board in a four-star hotel, ski pass for five days, equipment hire, insurance and two lessons per day.

There are 52 places per trip for young people between 14 and 35 years old. Those who are interested should visit the youth information centre. A deposit of €200 is required to reserve the place and the remaining €265 will need to be paid before January 22, for those going on the first trip, and February 12, for those on the second.

Alcoy cleans up THE bridge area of San Jorge in Alcoy has markedly improved in recent days due to the demolition of the former textile factories that were left in ruins after a fire broke out in the abandoned buildings in May 2014.

By Buster Smith LAS SALINAS in Calpe, known for its flamingoes is a fragile ecosystem affected by small changes which can cause a chain reaction and downward spiral. The wetland had suffered during the summer drought

this year, with water levels falling sharply resulting in many fish dying off due to the increased salinity. The 41-hectare natural salt marsh supports 173 species of birds, many of which are of great biological interest such as the flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) and others

like the stilt and Kentish plover. Although heavy rains can sometimes have a detrimental effect on the marsh, with rainwater run-off coming from the streets and hills bringing pollutants, the recent rains seem to have had a positive effect on the area, at least for now.

Police investigate death of Belgian woman in Benidorm BODY recovered from the rocks below Plaza de San Jaime lookout point By John Smith BENIDORM National Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 30-year-old Belgian woman. Her naked body was found on the rocks 20 metres beneath the lookout point at Plaza de San Jaime, in the area known as Punta Canfali. A 39-year-old Spanish man, who was also injured

in the incident, has been taken into custody in order to clarify whether the death was accidental or the result of gender violence. It is not clear if the man sustained his injuries falling with the woman or when he went to the place where she was found. Reports from witnesses suggest that the couple were seen arguing shortly before the fall. The couple own a catering estab-

lishment in the nearby area. A post-mortem examination has revealed that the cause of death was in fact drowning.The victim hit the rocks and ended up in the sea. Police are waiting to take a statement from the man, who is currently in the intensive care unit of Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa. His condition has not been released by the hospital

but reportedly he is under police guard as he was the only person at the scene and his previous statements were inconsistent. During the rescue it was noted that the man had a bruised and swollen right eye. The viewpoint is popular with tourists and accidents of this nature are difficult due to the metre-high balustrade which is in place to prevent such occurrences.

Swedish buyers boosting Costa property market

THE property market in the province continues to be one of the most active and buoyant in Spain; however, the success and recovery is mainly down to foreign investors. Britons still form the largest proportion of foreign investors, and account for practically 20 per cent of all residential properties purchased by foreigners. The importance of the Swedish market is now coming to the fore, however. Latest figures issued by the Ministry of Development and property registrars in Spain show that 9.9 per cent of foreign pur-

chases are in fact coming from Sweden, illustrating the increased demand from the Scandinavians for Spanish property. A leading Swedish estate agency operating on the Costa Blanca, Fastighetsbyran, a subsidiary of Swedbank, has sold almost 1,000 properties in 2015 with a total value of â‚Ź200 million, an increase of 48 per cent over 2014. Forty-nine per cent of their sales have been in the province of Alicante, a fact that has been attributed to the frequency of direct airline services between Alicante and Scandinavia.

Six years for rapist THE Court of Alicante has sentenced a man to six years in prison who was accused of raping a woman he had just given a massage to in Benidorm. The ruling has also specified a five-year restraining order be placed on the perpetrator after the sentence is completed and a fine of €19,440 be paid to the victim. The victim, on holiday in Benidorm, when the attack happened was in an apartment that she had rented with a friend. The man’s DNA was found after the woman was admitted to hospital, and she was said to have suffered anxiety because of the attack.

Reservoirs refilling THE storms that occurred at the beginning of November in the province are helping to refill reservoirs, adding 24 cubic hectometres during the recent gota fria, according to Confederation Jucar (CHJ).

By Buster Smith THE Marina Alta finished October with an increase of 488 more people unemployed, leaving a total of 13,936 people unemployed within the region, with the towns of Denia and Calpe experiencing the highest number of job losses for the month. The service sector, as usual, was the most affected with 521 people left without a job as

the season comes to a close and the winter period begins. In Denia, Servef recorded 210 more people unemployed. The only drop in unemployment was recorded in the construction industry with 83 people gaining work. Calpe and Denia experienced the highest rates of unemployment, while Javea recorded 74, Teulada Moraira 45 and in Ondara there were 24 more people left without jobs. There were a number of locations that did

not register any change, which included Benigembla, Gata de Gorgos and Vall d’Alcala while in a dozen more municipalities jobs were actually created, such as Pego which has 39 less people registered as unemployed and Orba, Pedreguer, Benidoleig and Jalon also registered a small increase in employment. Figures show that in October over 3,373 contracts were signed, 87.3 per cent were temporary and 52.5 per cent for part time work.

Posidonia on beaches protects sand erosion TOWN halls are working on awareness campaigns

POSIDONIA: This plant is in fact good for our beaches. By Buster Smith THE recent storms have seen heavy seas along the coast over the last few weeks, which will continue throughout the winter months in the province. However while many residents complain of the build up of posidonia on the beaches and some town halls continue to remove it, it should be made aware that the presence of this plant is in fact good for our beaches and is one of the last

lines of defence against sand erosion, an issue that costs the province millions of euros each year in replacing sand lost to the sea. There are many town halls, such as Calpe, that have been working hard on awareness campaigns over a number of years to inform residents as to what posidonia actually is and its benefits for our beaches. Contrary to what many people believe, the posidonia is not an algae, but has elements of great importance to the natural ecosystem, both when alive under the sea or dead on the shore.

363 swimmers participate in competition ON November 7, La Nuciaâ€™s municipal swimming pool hosted the 16th Swimming Trophy with 363 swimmers taking part representing 18 clubs from the province of Alicante. The event was organised by the Swimming federation of Valencia, the provincial council of Alicante and the Swimming Club of La Nucia in collaboration with the department of sports and marks the ninth successful competitive event held at the pool. Of the competitors there are three local swimmers representing La Nucia, and categories included infants, juvenile and child, with the youngest competing in 50 metres freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, while the juvenile and child categories raced 100 metres in the four strokes. There was also a relay competition, of a distance of six by 50 metres.

The Ciudadanos political group said the furniture giant could go on land in the area of Agua Amarga close to the Ciudad de la Luz, on the outskirts of the city, away from the current proposed Rabasa site, which is continually being debated.

Daughter awarded money SIXTY THOUSAND EUROS compensation is to be paid to the family of a woman who died in Alicante just hours after being discharged from hospital. The court has ordered the compensation after the 49 yearold went to the General Hospital of Alicante with severe abdominal pain and respiratory problems. She explained to doctors she had been constipated for 15 days but was released that same day. She died five hours later of a perforated colon. The daughter of the victim claimed medical malpractice saying her mother did not receive the necessary tests which ultimately could have diagnosed her condition and saved her life. The court agreed a CAT scan would have shown the problems and awarded the daughter compensation.

Restrictions for new bars and clubs LOCAL businesses agree that new bars can only open in areas not already saturated

ALICANTE CENTRE: Licences will still be considered in unsaturated areas. By Buster Smith BUSINESS owners in the centre of Alicante met with the town planning department, headed by Miguel Angel Pavon, to discuss the licensing laws with regard to hotels, restaurants and bars in the old town. Pavon confirmed the department will veto licences for new bars and clubs in areas already saturated, but has stressed that in unsaturat-

ed areas licences will still be considered. Traders have stressed their disapproval of the clubs and bars, which are creating a negative social impact. The president of the association of traders has asked that â€œareas are evaluated to ensure new establishments fit well within that area,â€? and the decision to allow large shops and supermarkets in the old town has also been criticised. The association has also asked for improved cleaning.

Health department hosts foreign students DENIA hospital provides formation training

ERASMUS PROGRAMME: Students spend three months training in specialist areas. By Buster Smith THE Health Department in Denia hosts a dozen students of medicine and nursing from the Erasmus programme each year, thanks to a collaboration agreement with the Catholic University of Valencia. This year the hospital is providing formation training for

five students including two from the UK, two from Columbia and one from France. The students are specialising in Dermatology, Emergency, Surgery, Pediatrics, Diagnostic Imaging and Gynaecology. The hospital has also taken on five nurses with the programme, three from Finland and two from Norway perform-

ing various services within the department and who will be practising until mid December. Erasmus students spend three months in Denia, practising in the hospital. The initiative to bring students to Denia, where there is no university infrastructure has been taken by Marina Salud, the company that manages the hospital.

Café theft THIEVES have robbed a cafe in the town centre of Javea. They forced the door and stole cash. The owners discovered the theft the next morning. The thieves acted discretely since no residents heard or saw anything unusual.

A new Vice-Consul is wanted for Alicante LLOYD Milen moves to new post as Consul-General By Gemma Quinn THE Vice Consul in Alicante, Lloyd Milen, has been appointed as Consul-General in Barcelona and the Consular Regional Manager for north-east Spain. Mr Milen, who will take up the position next month, replaces Andrew Gwatkin, who has left for a new role outside the Foreign Office. Recruitment for a new Vice Consul in Alicante now begins this week. Consul-General Mr Milen will represent UK interests and lead the teams of the British Consulates in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, as well as the British Honorary Consuls in Menorca, Tarragona, Gerona and Andorra. OCTOBER in Alicante was the warmest since 1967. According to the State Meteorology Agency, the month was a ‘tropical’ one with high temperatures but a lot of rain; 66 per cent more than the average for the month. October 5 was the hottest day when it reached 34.3 degrees, the hottest since 1967. The last time temperatures were nearly as warm was October 12, when 34.2 degrees was recorded in the province.

ALICANTE STADIUM: Will host a friendly football match between Spain and England. By Gemma Quinn JUST three hours after tickets went on sale at the Alicante football stadium that will host tomorrow’s (Friday) friendly between Spain and England, they were sold out.

Within hours of the box office opening, fans had snapped up all of the remaining 2,500 tickets that had been released for general public sale. This meant that around 500 people w ho w e re s till in the que ue ha d to leave disappointed.

Some had queued overnight to ensure they were there when the ticket booths opened. Police were also present to ensure order and, despite the ones who had to leave without a ticket, there were no reported incidents.

A plastic Christmas for Alicante ALICANTE’S ice rink this year may use a synthetic base. It will be the fifth year the city has a festive skating rink over the Christmas and New Year period, but it always received criticism for the cost of the installation and the levels of noise pollution generated by the generators to make the ice. Councillor for Urbanism, Miguel Angel Pavon, has proposed the ice be replaced with synthetic matter: “You can skate on it just as well as natural ice.” He is happy to keep the artificial rink in the town hall square by the Christmas tree; which should also be plastic. Pavon also wants fake snow for the slide on the children’s attraction La Montañeta: “We are against unnecessary energy consumption.”

MORE TEACHERS: Class sizes will be reduced as more teachers are trained for Valencia’s schools. By Gemma Quinn MORE teachers will gradually be returning to the classrooms in the Valencia Region. Around 5,000 teachers have been lost in recent years as a result of the cuts, but that trend will be reversed as the regional government announces the recruitment of over

a thousand new teachers. Minister for Education, Vicent Marza, said the plans will start with the increase in 174 primary teachers and an additional 900 teachers in secondary schools. The move aims to reduce the number of students per class from 30 to 25 in primary

schools and from 35 to 30 per class in secondary. A budget of €10 million is to be made available for teacher training and more will be invested in school infrastructure. Marza describes the budget as ‘honest, sincere and realistic.’

New plan introduced to prevent school violence VIOLENCE between students has increased in the classroom in the last five years, with a rise of up to 30 per cent.

As a result, education authorities are implementing the ‘Plan for the Prevention of School Violence’ (PREVI).

Seeking a new freshwater source TEULADA and Benitachell have signed an agreement with a group of cave divers who are exploring the Cova del Moraig in Benitatxell. The divers are mapping the undersea route also known as the Riu Blanc in an effort to obtain a new source of fresh water for the region.

“We have seen a lot of reports of violence at schools with the emergence of more fighting and assaults on girls,” said Councillor Carmen Fernandez, who explained that a new teaching responsibility is being introduced in the protocols for coexistence in the classroom, and to detect both child abuse and cases of domestic violence: “The school is an important reference in detecting child abuse, so that students can get out of those situations through initiating emergency procedures,” said Fernandez. The education department is also calling on teachers to help detect cases of gender violence, to talk about it and deal with it in classrooms through education to help eradicate the problem in society. Councillor Fernandez said: “Like bullying, gender violence is a social problem that is growing alarmingly.”

By Buster Smith THE health department in the province of Valencia continues to provide health cards for illegal immigrants, even though the constitutional court has temporarily suspended the Valencian law that guarantees health care to illegal aliens. In an act of blatant defiance to the government in Madrid,

the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig has instructed health care centres to attend to everyone, following the law, which was reintroduced by his government and councillor for health, Caren Monton, as one of the very first changes made when the coalition party formed of PSOE, Compromis and Podemos, took office this year.

Mariano Rajoy has stated that this decision is not one for a regional government to take, critising Puig’s government for over reaching its powers. When pressed by journalists on the issue Puig replied: “There are other ways to provide the service,” but gave no indication as to what they were. “No one can prevent us from internal solidarity,” he added.

The ministry of health has clarified the decision taken by the constitutional court, saying that it does not mean that illegal aliens will not be attended, but simply that they must apply though social service programmes. The court has declared that the issue of healthcare and other basic services is the responsibility of the state, not regional government.

Crime rate in the region has dropped this year ALTHOUGH general crime has fallen, the murder rate has increased By Buster Smith THE crime rate in the region has been declining in recent years, as shown by the figures provided by the Interior Ministry. Currently there are 80,000 fewer crimes recorded today than there were a decade ago, which means that citizens may feel increasingly confident in the region, which is thanks to the efficiency and the work of the state security forces, according to government delegate in the region, Juan Carlos Moragues. The date shows a decrease in the general crime rate of 5.4 per cent, which is good news for a region that already enjoys a low crime rate, especially when compared with other areas in Europe. However there is one noticeable and worrying increase in the region, which is that of homicide. The murder rate, some of which are still unresolved, has almost doubled in the first nine months of 2015, going from 12 in the first nine months of 2014 to 23 during the same period of time this year.

Although Moragues said: “One of the cases involved a man in Villajoyosa who killed his mother and two daughters before committing suicide, and another case involved four people being killed, tragedies that have slightly distorted the statistics.” In general though the region has achieved one of the largest declines in crime across the country, surpassed only by Navarra, which saw a 9.3 per cent reduction and Aragon and Asturias which saw a 6.3 per cent decrease. Crime has also declined throughout the nation as a whole, but less than half of that has been seen in the province. The crime rate, which is measured by crimes that occur per 1,000 inhabitants, has dwindled considerably over the years, and is better than the national average. In the last decade it has declined from 66.7 to 49.4, Moragues stated: “Right now we live far safer than in the past in the region and I am convinced that the rate will continue to fall in the coming years. Subjects including teaching, economics

and law are priced at €16.31 per credit. What is more, after the budget cuts of 2012-13, which saw the government rationalise public spending in education, students must now pay between 15 and 25 per cent of the official registration fee too. Masters degrees, mandatory for those wishing to practise a profession, have only decreased in cost in Madrid (by 6.7 per cent) and Andalucia (by 16.6 per cent) but have remained the same elsewhere. The statistics also illustrate that in the province, there has been a 33.3 per cent increase in course rates for courses since 2012-13. Although not the highest increase in Spain, which has been seen in Catalonia (66.7 per cent), it is significant enough to make the option of studying in the province less attractive compared to other regions.

Gender violence protests THOUSANDS marched through the streets of Madrid By Linda Hall NIJAR, Huercal de Almeria and Adra gave visible support to Madrid’s March against Gender Violence. The protest was backed by 450 groups, including 70 state organisations, and the march was headed by victims who survived gender violence. They were followed by thousands of women from all over Spain and representatives of the major political parties with the exception of the Partido Popular. In Almeria Province, Nijar displayed a banner with the purple awareness ribbon that called for an end to gender violence. Huercal de Almeria followed suit with another purple bow and banner while Adra hung out a white ribbon after a unanimous vote from all parties in favour of the march. Each will display the banners once more on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

HEALTH centres have been ordered to continue giving health cards to immigrants by the President of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig, to ensure all immigrants are able to have health cover.

THE crime rate in the Balearic Islands fell by 4.4 per cent between January and September this year, compared to the same period in 2014. There were 53,258 crimes, the Government Delegate, Teresa Palmer, reported.

HACIENDA, the Spanish Tr e a s u r y, h a s i d e n t i f i e d €40 billion of assets deposited overseas of which 45 per cent is said to be lodged in tax havens, according to recent reports. The largest amount estimated at €19.87 billion is unsurprisingly lodged in Switzerland, with €9.98 billion in Luxembourg and €4.07 billion in Andorra, which itself is jointly administered by Spain. The Treasury has found €15.04 billion in areas said t o b e d i ff i c u l t f o r a c c e s s and it was noted that Spanish taxpayers have more money in Swiss banks than G e r m a n y, F r a n c e a n d t h e United Kingdom put together.

Michelin to close Antrim factory THE Michelin tyre factory in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is due to close in 2018 with the loss of 860 jobs, although the company also announced that it will increase production at its Dundee plant and upgrade its production facility in Stoke-on-Trent. According to the BBC, Unite union’s Davy Thompson said in addition to workers employed directly by Michelin, “there are approximately 500 contractors and many more in the wider economy who now face the threat of redundancy as a result of this announcement.” Michelin said in a statement: “There is a strong need to reduce overcapacity and concentrate Michelin truck tyre production in larger, more competitive sites. Despite great efforts and progress being made in previous years, other European plants are still more competitive than Ballymena.”

A meeting of the Federal Reserve’s policy committee in December is the next and final opportunity for any increase to take place this year after US interest rates have been near zero since December 2008. Higher interest rates would make the dollar appear more attractive to investors so the heavily

THERE are considerable downsides to running a business, especially in Spain. Notorious for its impractical employment laws and anti-business ethos; anyone whose business survives 12 months should be awarded the commercial equivalent of the Victoria Cross. One of the biggest handicaps in business is the difficulty encountered when one is tempted to fire useless staff. Customer and staff incentives are an essential component of successful businesses. Some of you, likely retired by now, will recall the Co-op shopping chain’s dividends. Later on there were Green Shield stamps. These were ‘cash or kind’ incentives for showing shop or brand loyalty. Although the returns were ludicrously small, such inducements worked like a dream. Because the retailer could rely on customer loyalty there was little need for offering in-store discounts. Best of all, the costs and the management of the scheme were added to the customer’s shop-

OTHERS THINK IT THIS WEEK, flicking through the daily mish mash of rubbish that now passes for daytime TV, I happened upon an edition of ‘Loose Women.’ The title, a rather pathetic attempt at a double entendre, rather sums up the quality of this whole pontificating presentation. Basically it is a bunch of prattling females, pretending to adore each other, when it is painfully obvious that the only things they truly adore are their own egos. On this occasion, the panel was discussing a recent fire. Finger hovering above the remote, I hesitated before moving on. ‘And so,’ shrilled the one in the middle. ‘We have invited a proper fireman to come on the show and discuss the problem.’ We were then treated to the sight of the fireman. Stripped to the waist, clad in helmet, shorts and boots and looking for the entire world like a ‘Village People’ reject,

I’m afraid I’m one of the old school, who still thinks that the event of ‘the pill’ created a whole gender, totally confused and struggling to come to terms with a completely unnatural existence, that to my mind, nature certainly didn’t intend! SOME days are great and everything is perfect. Others... well, my fervent wish is that I had stayed in bed. We recently returned from a week on the lovely island of Mallorca, which, amongst other things, is synonymous with a certain brand of high quality pearl jewellery. My wife is a fan and naturally a trip to the factory shop in Manacor was high on the princess’s priority list. We wandered around the premises for some time admiring their comprehensive collection. The flexible friend in my wallet was exhausted, our companions had expressed interest in taking a coffee break, and I had a desire to attend the little boy’s room. For convenience I had attached my camera to the belt on my shorts

Weekend of contrasts IT has been a real weekend of contrasts with regards to gender violence in Spain, with a mixture of both encouraging and depressing news over just two days. An estimated 20,000 people marched through the streets of Madrid on Saturday November 7, against gender violence and to highlight the fact that almost 1,400 victims have been killed by their current or former partners since 1995. In actual fact, despite the figures showing that on average one woman is killed every four days in Spain by a member of the opposite sex and despite the so-called ‘macho’ image of many Spanish men, the country comes low on the list of gender violence across Europe. Perhaps surprisingly, the worst offenders are Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Having seen the massive support for the protection of women on Saturday, there was a complete reversal on Sunday with four women being murdered by partners or relatives across Spain. A mother and daughter were shot by the daughter’s estranged partner; a 28-yearold woman was shot by her partner who then turned the gun on himself, and another woman was reported to have been stabbed to death by her son. Violence is endemic but we have to hope that if enough people protest and youngsters are properly educated that it will eventually become a thing of the past.

Our leaders are responsible for taking the Great out of Britain Re: Why is Great Britain no longer great? LOVED what you had to say, Nora Johnson. My wife had to wait for six months for the treatment of her breast cancer here in Cornwall; it was a really horrendous time. Currently she is well and we are keeping our fingers crossed it stays that way. As for our so-called leaders/MPs who in the last 30 years or so have allowed what was once a truly great country to become what it is today, every one of them should in my mind be lined up against a wall and shot for treason. I would not trust one of them to put my dustbin out for collection let alone run our country. Only last week they were near on begging China to build us a power station. China? Are we unable to do anything on our own any more? Having in the past served in the Forces as a person who loved his country like no other, no way would I do such a thing now. Looking Good, Staying Trim

I DO not believe that there is anything more tedious than having to work out the calorie content of every single food item that you consume. However, I can relate to it, as I was guilty of doing just that through my teens. I knew absolutely nothing about how the body functioned. I can remember having a calorie counter book that was like a dictionary A-Z of every popular supermarket branded food in the country. What a bonus! Let’s say I am allowed 1,500 calories a day and I just have a hankering for Mars bars… there are around 260 calories in a Mars bar, I can eat four of them and still be under my calorie allowance, right? WRONG!

I didn’t really replace my meals with four Mars bars but you get the idea. However, I did adopt this way of thinking. Of course, I never lost weight, and with this method of eating I was never going to look good, and to top it all off I became obsessed with food. Now, I know better. I have studied both the physical and mental side of dieting and exercise, read many books and tried many different eating and exercise plans. One thing I will share with you is that once I stopped obsessing about how many calories I was allowed to have and how many I was eating, and focused on building a fit, lean body with my exercise sessions… BINGO!!! I started to get the results. There is also the obsession of calorie burn relating to how many calories you are burning depending on what exercise you are doing. The truth is any exercise is going to help you to

lose weight as long as you are eating healthily and cutting down on treats. However, the defining factor of your body type, current weight and gender will determine how many calories you are likely to use up in any one training session. Any exercise class that promises that you will burn 800 calories per 45minute session is, I will boldly say, lying to you! OK, maybe if you happen to look like film star The Rock, then you could burn that amount of calories in an intense training session, but I know I could do the same class and only expect to burn around 360, maybe more if I’m lucky. But why fret over that? If you eat healthy food, aim for a minimum of three meals a day, cut out the junk and alcohol, you won’t need to worry about how many calories you are burning in class, you will see the physical changes and you will lose weight.

The ECO foundation said malnutrition is higher in patients with tumours in the head, neck, pancreas and digestive system. In Spain, for every million inhabitants there are 4.5 cancer pat i ent s wi t h malnutrition, 14 patients per million population in the UK suff er i ng and 24 i n Italy. As a result of this worrying situation, the ECO foundation is calling for action to improve the detection of these cases. In addition, it wants better monitoring of the nutritional status of pat i ent s who ar e suff er i ng f r om cancer and goi ng through treatment.

I have had high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat for 10 years, which was perfectly controlled by medication until recently. A month ago I started feeling strange and found my blood pressure had jumped from 120/73 to 163/97. After a week it was still up so I went to the doctor and he upped my medication twice. Blood tests showed I had high cholesterol and my doctor decided it could be due to one of the medications I take and also suggested I might have hyperthyroidism. He has asked me to go on a no milk or dairy diet for three months to see if diet is my problem. I find this bewildering as for the last 20 years I have only eaten a healthy, low-fat diet with hardly any red meat and everything skimmed. He wants to see me again in two weeks to check my blood pressure. Although I trust him I would love a second opinion as I am worried that all these problems combined could be dangerous and I

might need extra medication now. I have been researching on the internet but end up going round in circles as all these things seem to be interconnected and complex. Dear patient, We have many things to take into account here. High blood pressure is a chronic problem which can sometimes, for various reasons, get out of control. It takes patience and gradual increases in medication to get it back under control. Diet is also important and salt should be avoided at all costs. You should be monitored by a doctor, preferably a specialist in Internal Medicine, and if in a few weeks your levels are not back under control further studies will be needed to rule out problems associated with high blood pressure. To determine whether you have thyroid problems we would need to do further tests and an ultrasound to decide whether you need medication now. Finally I would recommend that you do not trust anything you read on the internet as often information given is misleading.

HOPES have been raised for infertile men as 12 sterile men have become fathers thanks to a scientific breakthrough. The technique used is called spermatid injection and involved immature sperm being injected directly into a woman’s egg. It is designed to help men in which sperm production stops halfway through, when the cells are still round and before they take on their distinctive tadpole shape. The technique was used in the 1990s with a handful of babies being born, but it was later banned over concerns that sperm used at such an early stage could hold

genetic abnormalities. These new babies born have all been deemed healthy without any mental or genetic problems. Researchers from the Institute for ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) in Fukuoka, Japan, said one of the reasons for their success was that modern technology now allowed them to be able to use the right cells allowing men who could not produce sperm use their own genetic make-up to produce children. Seventy-six men were treated in Japan, so with the babies born the treatment had a success rate of 16 per cent.

A study has found that having a pet dog reduces a child’s risk of asthma by 15 per cent and regular contact with farm animals can halve it. A pint also has less sugar than a tall frappuccino, which has around 35 grams of sugar on average. A study by Italy’s Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura also found that a pint a day reduces the risk of heart disease or stroke by a third, compared to abstaining from drinking.

As last year’s referendum-that-wasn’t and September’s plebiscite-that-wasn’t demonstrated, the Catalans aren’t unanimously sold on independence. Politicians from outside the region won’t make a jot of difference. Only the 72 per cent of Catalans who would prefer to remain inside Spain rather than leave the European Union will do that.

AFTER the recent wet spell and with continuing temperatures in the 20s, now is a good time to take and plant cuttings of herbaceous plants and succulents. Cuttings can be easily taken and roots will soon grow whether replanted in the open ground or in pots. • Rose cuttings Roses are easily propagated from cuttings in Spain. Take a cutting of 40 to 70 centimetres long, trim off the base at a budding point, trim off any side shoots, trim the top at a bud or group of existing leaves, cut a tight slit in the base and slide in one or two dry sweetcorn seeds tying these in with raffia if they won’t stay in place. Then make

SHRUBS: A cutting from any side branch has a good chance of rooting and flowering even next year. a deep slit in good soil with a spade and fill it with water. Then when the water has drained away dip the end of the cutting in rooting powder and slide into the slit pushing it in so that 70 per cent is below the soil level. Finally fill in the slit with potting compost tapping it down as you do so with the end of a cane. You can grow new

bushes, standards and climbers/ ramblers in this way. • Succulents Just cut off branches from the base or stem and plant directly in the garden or in pots in a gritty compost/soil mix. It is preferable to let the open base dry out for a couple a days before planting to avoid the loss of sap and rotting.

• Bulbs Clumps of bulbs like Tulbaghia, Irises, Clivias, Crocosmias, Agapanthus, Hemerocallis, Canna Lillies and Fressias can all be split and replanted and should flower next year. • Shrubs If you wish to have additional plants of a favourite shrub, a cutting from any side branch

has a good chance of rooting and flowering even next year whether planted in deep pots or directly into the ground. My garden has Hibiscuses, a Buddleja, Neriums, Pittosporum, Callistemons, Cistus, Echiums and Hydrangeas started this way. • Climbing shrubs These can be propagated

from cuttings or by burying the end of hanging branches into the soil for six to 12 months. Indeed if you look you may find that rooted ends exist already. Bignonias, Jasmines, Honeysuckles, Ivies, Solandras, Solanums and Wisterias all propagate freely if you are lucky. • Herbaceous plants Rootballs split off from clumping and spreading perennials like Salvias, Gazanias, Heliopsis, Leonotis, Strelitzias soon produce new flowering clumps, and with all cuttings inexpensive new plants. • Ground cover plants Most ground cover plants spread by putting down roots from spreading branches. New plants are therefore easy to obtain by digging up a rooted end and cutting it off from the parent plant.

The effect of rainwater on swimming pools HOW much does it influence pool chemistry?

pH LEVELS: Not significantly affected by rainfall. GIVEN that most swimming pools are, on average, 1.2 metres in depth, two centimetres of rain (which is quite a bit) would only change the make-up of the water by 1/48th. The other 47/48ths are still the original chemistry; therefore, should still be very near its original composition.

There are other factors to take into account: acid rain or excessive pool deck run-off, for example, may affect the pH levels to a degree. However, if the water had an original balance of 7.5 and given that acid rain would have a pH of around 5, 1/48th of the volume

would bring the total down to around 7.3/7.4. In almost all cases the only significant impact of rain is that it brings contaminates, caused more by the wind than the rain. More frequent vacuuming after a storm would help with this.

Blue lights for all priority vehicles AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

NEW LAW: Flashing blue lights. FROM February 2016, all priority vehicles on Spain’s roads will display flashing blue lights. Currently, fire vehicles, ambulances and tow trucks indicate that they are priority vehicles by use of flashing orange lights, only the police and Guardia Civil use blue. Spain was the only European country which had not adopted the standard but a change to the law has been published this week, which will come into force early next year. Are you allowed to exceed the speed limit while overtaking? This can be a confusing question as the answer is both yes, and no. But, mostly no. According to Article 51 of the Reglamento General de Circulación, “the maximum fixed speeds for conventional roads which do not pass through urban areas may only be exceeded by up to 20 kilometres per hour by saloon cars and motorcycles whilst overtak-

ing other vehicles travelling at lesser speeds.” This clause first came about to allow cars to pass a slower moving vehicle in the shortest time possible, allowing an increase in speed in order to execute the move quickly. The word ‘execute’ being a reminder that overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres. In the event of a head-on collision, speed is added to that of the oncoming vehicle, so a crash where two vehicles are travelling at 90 kph is the equivalent of crashing at 180 kph, when the two speeds are combined. The rule does exist, but only in certain circumstances and it can only ever apply to cars and motorcycles. The clause is not permitted on motorways, dual carriageways or in towns, or cities. This means it can only be used on so-called conventional roads, single carriageway, with no central reservation and outside of towns.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’M currently on a trip to the USA and as much as I like visiting the country some of their customs drive me nuts! Like all this, ‘You have a nice day’, business which is usually said to everybody and is so insincere. Tipping! I don’t mind tipping but in the US it’s a crazy 20 per cent. And God help you if you go into a restaurant and try and leave less for whatever reason, like maybe the service was no good. You will get abused by the same angel that informed you on arrival her ‘name is Mary and she will be your server today’ and who then proceeds to not be very good at her job at all and the food wasn’t all that. Be prepared to be chased out of the place. I stay at one particular hotel. On arrival a man opens the cab door and I tip him. Someone else then helps me with

my case and I tip him. I go to reception, check in and go to my room. My luggage arrives and I tip the porter. Every day when I go to breakfast the waitress says to me, “Good morning, how are you today?” “Fine thanks,” I reply. She then asks, “and where are you from?” “Spain,” I reply. Day two it’s the same questions and same replies. Days three, four and five go pretty m uch t he sam e. On day si x I ’ ve had enough so I decide to expand on my answers and before she finishes her sentences she gets senkered! “Good morning and how.....” “Well, to tell you the truth I’m not all that today. “My legs ache as I have a very rare neurological condition, my kidney failure is still at stage three, the scars on my chest and legs also ache a bit because in t he ni ght I t ook a dr i nk and st ar t ed coughing and think I might have done som et hi ng... Euribor hits another all-time low THE Euribor rate, used to calculate interest on most of the mortgages signed in Spain, still hasn’t found its base and ended October at a new historical low of 0.134 per cent. This new low means mortgage-holders due for revisions this month will save an average of €11 per month on their repayments. So far this year the rate has suffered almost 67 per cent drops as it started 2015 at 0.323 per cent. Is the rate heading for 0 per cent? XTB analyst Jaime Diez has said he believes it is. Following the latest meeting of the European Central Bank, he said, the fall has picked up speed. “The tendency is likely to continue over the coming months,” Diez predicted.

Meanwhile, metropolitan areas registered a 44.4 per cent drop and capitals and large cities fell by 44.5 per cent. The smallest falls since prices peaked were in the Balearic and Canary Islands (29.2 per cent) and small towns in general(-36.6 per cent).

New Intu investment FTSE-100 company Intu, which owns such British shopping malls as the Trafford Centre in Manchester, is planning a £500 million (€707.75 million) investment in Spain over the next five to seven years. One site for a new development in Malaga is already owned by the company and it also has options on another three in Spain. Chief Executive David Fischel said Intu plans to do more developments on new sites instead of taking over existing malls.

It is not time consuming and most training can be done whilst exercising the dog. If you do not have time to exercise your dog then you should not have one. Training classes undoubtedly contribute to better training of dogs. One great advantage is that they accustom the dog to meeting others. Many people are regarded as experts when they have trained a dog of one breed to a very high standard. Faced with a difficult dog they would not know where to start. Training methods vary just as much as dogs and their owners do. There are however, many accepted exercises that form a useful basis for most dogs and most owners. Many people do not fully realise their responsibilities and try very hard to comply and end up with a dog that will bite, cause a road accident, etc. Why? Because few owners understand canine mentality. Owners must not regard dogs as almost human as this is an insult to our canine

Intelligence is not an important factor in a dog’s make up. It is a fact that nearly all problem dogs are very intelligent and certainly a fact that few dog owners understand their instincts. Dogs and indeed all animals learn by association of ideas, they do not reason at all, but simply react to what is happening and do not think about what has happened or is about to happen. It is believed that some-

times they work out a problem for themselves. All training should be based on this. For training purpose we try to create associations we want and avoid those we do not want, by what is known as correction and reward. Correction means any act which forces the dog to obey, like pushing him into the sit position. A dog will accept a human substitute for a canine leader and this willingness to accept a human makes him easier to train than most other animals.

How to treat your little furry pets NOT all pets are dogs or cats, many of us have smaller furry friends such as hamsters, gerbils, mice or chinchillas, most of which have specific needs when it comes to looking after them. Over the next couple of weeks we will take a look at their basic needs and the little things that make their ‘little furry’ lives happy. Chinchillas: One of the larger of this group, and the furriest. They need quite a big indoor enclosure or large cage because they are very active. Needing lots of exercise, it’s a good idea to have different levels for them to climb and jump from. They also need an array of interesting toys so they don’t get bored, the toys don’t have to be elaborate, cardboard toilet rolls and boxes that they can hide in and chew on are ideal. Wooden seesaws, shelters, and ramps and hammocks are also favourites. Make feeding time a ‘fun time.’ Scatter some food around the cage and hide some in tubes, so they have an adventure hunting for treasure. Keep some toys stored aside for different weeks. Saving boredom, this helps keep the toys interesting. Some don’ts! Don’t let your chinchilla have

any plastic toys. Apart from the toxicity problems, these can splinter and be very harmful if eaten. If they like to, or rather insist on chewing wood, let them chew on branches made from softwoods, such as untreated apple or pear, not furniture. Ideally, give them a gnawing block to help wear their teeth down. Chinchillas love a daily dust bath. It keeps their coat in good condition. Without it, their fur becomes matted. Make sure the dust bath is large enough for them to roll in. Fill it with sand to a depth of at least 6cm. Don’t let them stay in the bath forever. Limit it to 10 minutes or so, once a day. If you leave it for longer, they may view it as a toilet and leave you a present. Excessive dust bathing can also cause eye problems.

Busters Alto Real November 2015 AS usual the monthly Stableford game is played on the first Friday of the month, for this month’s game they returned to Alto Real. The fairways have recovered very well from the last time they played there in September, and the greens although not up to the course’s past standards were good, but still had the odd patches that had not yet fully recovered. However Antonio the manager assures them that things will be back to normal after they have been hollow tined. There was a turnout of 26 players for this month’s competition with nine of the members scoring over 30 points, and some stiff competition amongst the players as November is the penultimate month for the player of the year competition. They also had five new members, of which three of them were single figure players. Nearest the pins were won

by: On hole 5, Dave Pretty. Hole 8, was taken by Jo Doyle. The 10th, was won by Roger Burton, George Holmes took the 17th. Larry Kinsella won the best front nine with 18 points, and Dave Pretty took the best back nine with 19 points. Match results were: In third place with 33 points, was Keith Smith, the runner up on the day with 34 points was one of the new members, Michael Curran, playing off a handicap of five. The winner on the day was Alan Gifford, also with 34 points, and only winning on a count back which went to the back six points. The mini golf’s crazy golf at Alto Real is open throughout the winter and the owners assure us that any bouts of frost will not affect their course, which is open to everyone, so bring the children along, food served during the winter months up to 3:30pm.

Imanyo Golf Society PRESENTATION was followed with the usual good food and drink THIS is the second time this cup has been played for, many thanks to Phil and Margaret Ward for sponsoring the day. The defending winner was Eamon Murphy, playing off a lower handicap than last year and just managing to retain it by winning on count back. Orba Warblers Golf Society THIRTY players made the short trip to La Sella this week for an early start. They were greeted by beautiful autumnal weather for the second running of the Autumn Cup. The winner on the day and the 2015 Autumn Trophy Champion, with an outstanding back nine holes, was Peter Gibson, with 34 points (Hcp 21.4 with a 0.8 cut in handicap). Top of division one was Chris Williamson with 33 points. Runner’s up spot went to Captain Bob Edwards with 31 points. And in third place, just losing out on count back, was Glynn Braidley, also 31 points. Division two winner was their best lady this week Barbara Pollitt with 31 points (Hcp 23.0), second place went to Glyn Walters with 30 points (Hcp 24.9), and making a welcome return to the podium in third place was Jurgen Mortensen, with 29 points (Hcp 19.9). Nearest the pin prizes on the par three’s went to Rosemary Edwards, Glynn Braidley, Mike Morley and Jurgen Mortensen. Nearest the pin in two on Hole 3 was won by Malcolm Robinson, and David French, who eagled this par five hole with an outrageous chip in from the rough. In the second semi-final of the singles knock out competition, Vice-Captain David Knight overcame Paddy Kenmore 3&2 in a very tight contest. In the

doubles knock out competition Sheila Dindar and Michael Taylor, edged out Rosemary Edwards and John Daniels, 2&1 and Michael Morley and Peter Gibson, beat David Edwards and Bob Edwards, one up. There was the usual twist in the tale from Steve when he presented two special prizes for hard luck stories on the day and these prizes went to two of our top players who both

had a couple of four putts on the greens. We considered keeping their identities a secret, however, David Knight and Glynn Braidley were both seen sheepishly accepting the prizes. Congratulations to the 2015 Autumn Cup Champion Peter Gibson. The next game for the Orba Warblers is Wednesday November 18, at Oliva Nova for the playing of the Oliva Nova Cup.

Pego Golf Society ‘Singles Stableford Competition’ THE course at Oliva Nova was just playable AFTER torrential rain on Monday, it was amazing that the course was open at all, as the 48

members all expected the course to be closed. Members who are more than 60, 70 and 80 years of age splashed their way round a very wet and sodden golf course. Some of the fairways were under water, but the greens were excellent. Well done to Oliva Nova for making the course just playable. In the main ‘Singles Stableford’ competition the winners were as follows:-

Division 1 Winners 1st Place Penny Barden, with 36 Points playing off 14.7. 2nd Place Martin Gates, with 35 Points playing off 6.0. 3rd Place Shaun O’Gorman, with 32 Points playing off 4.2. 4th Place Donna Green, with 31 Points playing off 11.2. Division 2 Winners 1st Brian Barden, with 39 Points playing off 18.4. 2nd Richard Fox, with 37 Points playing off 19.7.
