Endless queues for foreigners

Getting an appointment for an NIE or residence permit is becoming a big problem for foreigners in the Denia and Marina Alta area. Only 180 appointments are given out per week and only on Fridays - meaning those who need the vital paperwork are forced to queue on the street from around 5am. Local businesses complain they

have foreign customers who wish to move here but are put off by the difficult process. Others already living and working in the area reportedly have to pay people to queue as they cannot miss work. Local businesses are reportedly willing to pay for an appointment system to be set up to remove this obstacle in the future.

Alicante court investigating electric car scam COMPANY is alleged to have manipulated vehicles that have been sold in 16 provinces By Buster Smith THE supreme court in Spain has ordered the court in Alicante to commence investigations into a corporate scam that affects businesses and individuals in at least 16 provinces. The investigation, which began in late 2013 on charges of fraud, forgery and against intel-

lectual property, focuses on an alleged fraud committed by a company based in Alicante, that has reportedly falsified information on about 300 electric vehicles, bicycles and motorcycles. The suspects are said to have altered brands, frame numbers and other characteristics of the vehicles to market and sell

them as if they were from a different manufacturer. The products were later sold in provinces throughout Spain including the Basque Country, Catalonia, Castilla-Leon, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and the Balearic Islands. The official distributor reported the incident and the alleged perpetrators, aged 34 and

First rosé wine from Teulada THE cooperative winery Sant Vicent Ferrer of Teulada is discovering the world of moscatel grapes. Not only are they producing excellent mistelas, they are now launching their first rosé wine. Despite this year ’s drought, Paqui Oller, President of the cooperative in the area, has stated that the harvest has been good, with good quality grapes and no sign of plaques. They have managed to collect 250,000 kilos of the moscatel grape, slightly higher than last year. The president has also commented that they will be launching their first rosé wine this year to add to the collection of award winning wines. The rosé will be produced using 90 per cent moscatel and 10 per cent of the black Grenache grape variety, which will give the wine its distinct rosé coloration. Although they have no name as of yet, Oller suggested it could be named after a local wind.

Campaign starts against tiger mosquito TOWN hall stresses it will take a joint effort from the town hall and residents to control the problem By Buster Smith

TEULADA Town Council, through the Department of Environment, has launched a campaign to prevent the proliferation of the tiger mosquito and help minimise the inconvenience caused by the insect. The campaign requests that residents ensure their outside areas are maintained and importantly free from stagnant pools of water, which aids the proliferation of the mosquitoes, providing them with breeding grounds. The town hall will also be conducting pest control throughout the municipality, in particular in areas susceptible to outbreaks and ideal breeding grounds such as humid areas. The town hall stresses that it will take a joint effort on behalf of the town hall and residents to effectively control the problem, which requires the proper maintenance of swimming pools, garden and outdoors spaces. The town hall recommends ensuring all possible containers of water are emptied and avoid water accumulating in drainage or gutters.

Drones used to capture beauty of the Marina Alta landscape INNOVATION to promote tourism in the region By Buster Smith LOCAL artist and photographer Luis Montolio and aeronautics company Sincratech have created an innovative video using drones in order to promote tourism in the Marina Alta. The radio-controlled unmanned miniature aircraft house video cameras and have been used to capture unseen perspectives of the region, using footage of the stunning Marina Alta region. The artist has teamed up with Sincratech, a company formed by students from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, to work on the project which he believes will help to capture the real potential of the beautiful landscape, providing unobscured views over the area. In their first attempts at taking footage they took to the area of Moraira and Benitachell, filming the impressive Cova dels Arcs, a natural sea cave located at Cala Moraig.

BIRD’S EYE VIEW: Drones capture unobscured panoramas. The footage gives the viewer a bird’s eye view of the journey out of the cave and up the impressive cliffs that lie just outside, a tricky and risky manoeuvre since the rocks block signals to the drone.

However, the skilled team, who also use drones for search and rescue operations at sea - which has earned them the Galileo Masters prize for best European satellite navigation initiative - managed to pull it off. Once completed the video sequences will be used by tourism boards, and interest is also being shown by estate agencies.

Javea U3A Wine Appreciation Day MEMBERS sampled fine wines from local vineyards and learned about production methods and regional variations FORTY-SEVEN members of Javea U3A’s Wine Appreciation Group tasted a variety of fine wines at their monthly get-together at La Cocina restaurant in the town’s port. The wines were presented by Jose Canto from Bodegas Sierra Norte and Thamar Kolsteren from La Casa del Vino in Javea. Canto served up four wines, starting with a Cava Rosado from Bohigas, a Pasion Banco and two Pasion Tintos. He explained how the wines had their own distinctive taste as a result of the different areas the grapevines were grown in and the different methods of production. Despite the problems faced by the hotel industry in Benidorm with national programmes at this time of year, international tourism, notably from the UK continues to perform well, bringing in much needed revenue in the low season months, with overall tourism during this season expected to rise 126 per cent this year.

AENA to soundproof 459 more homes AENA, the company that manages Alicante-Elche Airport will fund soundproofing insulation works in 459 more homes in the vicinity of the airport. To date the company has already soundproofed

2,056 properties in the area, with 155 in the process. The project is part of the acoustic insulation plan required to meet with sonic quality objectives laid out by the environmental monitoring com-

mission that regulates airport facilities. A total of 2,055 homes have been soundproofed and one educational centre. There are 3,766 more properties that will require the work to be carried out.

Alicante opens new routes for winter TWO airlines increase their flight offer By Buster Smith ALICANTE-ELCHE Airport has opened new routes to operate over the winter season. New connections to Hamburg, Newcastle and Berlin are being operated by Ryanair, while Vueling will also open a new national route within Spain flying to Santiago de Compostela. The flights to Hamburg will run three times per week, on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while flights to Berlin will also fly three times per week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The new route to Newcastle will also fly frequently three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The Ryanair flights will use Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with a capacity of 189 passengers. The Vueling flight will operate twice per week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. The British and German markets have experienced an increase in flight frequency and number of seats available for the winter season, which is a promising indicator for the tourist industry on the Costa Blanca.

Improved safety at sea CALL for better sea rescue services in Alicante By Buster Smith ALICANTE has asked the regional government to provide the port of Alicante with a new 20-metre sea rescue boat, saying that the current situation does not provide adequate provision of marine rescue. There are only two boats for maritime rescue provided by the Ministry of Development, one in Javea and the other in Alicante, said to be inadequate to cover a large area of coastline from San Pedro to Pinatar in Murcia. The coastline is a hotspot for marine traffic, from pleasure and fishing boats and merchant marine activities to other water-based tourist activities. The argument is that the current provisions are insufficient to adequately pro-

Cartagena and Valencia the state administration has allocated superior performance boats, 20 metres long and with 1,100hp engines, resulting in a faster response time.

Energy efficient lighting THE town hall in San Vicente del Raspeig, has already installed over 500 lights throughout the city in a bid to conserve energy, and will now apply for a grant to improve street lighting and energy efficiency in various other areas of the municipality. The town hall has assessed the original implementation of the energy saving lighting systems and has seen a substantial saving in electricity bills. The

cost of renovation will be €240,000 of which it will request a grant of €187,000, the remainder to be funded by the town, allocating €52,500 to the project for 2016. The street light improvement scheme will include different areas of the town such as the industrial zone, and areas around San Vicente and San Juan and some of the parks including Plaza España.

DRIVING TEST: Backlog of 3,000 candidates.

Examiners call off driving test strike DRIVING test examiners have called off their strike which has lasted since September 14. However, the strike until now has left over 3,000 candidates throughout the province on a waiting list, who have been unable to take their driving test due to the strike. The department of traffic and examiners have reached a tentative agreement, enabling examiners to resume normal activity after 44 days of strike action. The driving examiners have been demanding better working conditions including wage reviews. The industry problems are not completely resolved as it will now take quite some time for the 3,000 candidates to be able to take their practical driving tests.

400 take part in scary fun HALLOWEEN was a complete success in La Nucia, with over 400 children participating in the activities and 10 th edition of the towns Halloween party organised by the town hall. A number of activities and games were run along with a parade through the streets. Children of all ages were able to participate in the fun and games and donned their best Halloween costumes for the occasion. Alicante needs â€˜to rethinkâ€™ its tourism strategy WINTER tourism in Alicante does not compare to success of Malaga By Buster Smith A RECENT report into the tourism industry in Alicante has noted that the decline in tourism in the winter months is in part caused by fewer cruise ships and the closing of hotels. It recommends that the city rethinks its tourism strategy and promotional efforts and improve its collaboration with the private sector. Tourism in Alicante is said to have run out of steam, operating below capacity and is unable to adapt to new trends. It is losing out as tourists choose to visit other areas such as Malaga, which is currently enjoying winter tourism figure increases of up to 20 per cent, which compares to a 17 per cent fall for Alicante. According to research carried out by the National Statistics Institute (INE),

Valencian agency of tourism and the department of economic analysis, and others, Alicante lacks prior planning for the low season. While the city has focused heavily on construction, its commitment to tourism has come in second place. Although the population in Andalucia surpasses that of Alicante by 200,000 inhabitants, there are only 68,000 more homes in the region than in Alicante. In summary the report suggests that Alicante devises an effective tourism plan and marketing strategy to make the city a more desirable destination for short breaks, creating new products and improve its cultural offering throughout the year, and importantly aim for more cruise passengers at the port.

Ancient sunken treasure found SITE now protected and activities regulated where ship sank 2,000 years ago By Buster Smith A SHIP that sank off the coast of Villajoyosa has received special protection for cultural interest as an archaeological site. The wreck of Bou Ferrer, a merchant vessel which sank in the first century AD, has been declared a site of cultural interest by the regional government. It lies off the beaches of La Vila and was discovered in 1999 by sport divers Viler and Antoine Joseph Bou Ferrer, whose surname was given to the site. The law decree was signed into the state official bulletin by regional Valencian president Ximo Puig and the Minister of Culture Vicent Marza. It aims to protect the site and ensure it is studied and scientifically documented. Activities have also been regulated in the area surrounding the site. These include restrictions on anchoring of boats, scuba diving and prohibition of under-

The ship was wrecked about 1,000 metres from the coast and is an exceptional discovery, since it was not documented and is at a depth that allows for easy scientific research.

Wild Halloween BIOPARC in Valencia celebrated Halloween with many of the animals taking part in the activities. Leopards, elephants, gorillas, meerkats, chimpanzees, and others found pumpkins and special treats in their enclosures, aimed at encouraging their natural behaviours. The Bioparc concept is to immerse visitors into the animalsâ€™ habitat so there are no cages; streams, ponds and rocks are used to separate visitors from the animals.

GUARDIA Civil have captured a sixmonth-old African lioness that had supposedly escaped from a travelling circus, and will be keeping the animal at a shelter for exotic animals. Agents from the Guardia Civil Nature Protection Service (SERPONA) located the animal, which was found in good health and subsequently captured it without incident. The unit has investigated the circus and made arrests for allegedly smuggling the animal and for irregularities on keeping animals under the CITES international convention, which protects wild species of flora and fauna by regulating trade. Customs in Alicante are now liaising with an African reserve to organise the animalâ€™s transfer and release. The species has suffered a rapid decline in recent decades, due to loss of habitat and constant poaching.

This is the third time in just 20 days that the thieves have stolen the cabling from the town in Orba, more than 3,000 metres were taken over two successive nights at the beginning of October. The town’s 1,000 residents have been left in a precarious situation, with older residents not able to call anyone if they need help and businesses, banks, pharmacies left without communications. Combating gender violence THERE are 43 cases in Javea and 22 restraining orders in force By Buster Smith TOWN HALL representatives, including Councillor for Public Safety Pepa Gisbert and Councillor for Equality Montse Villaverde have met with regional groups and security forces in Javea to discuss effective ways in which to combat gender violence in the municipality. The meeting focused on the study of alleged ill treatment of women in the population and how to respond to them with effective protocols, as well as how to provide victim sensitive, effective treatment. Gisbert reported that there are currently 43 cases in Javea, of which 28 have been classified as not significant, 14 as low risk and one medium risk. The town is also carrying out surveillance to ensure that 22 restraining orders are enforced. Of main concern to the town hall and security forces are cases that go unreported. “If they do not report the fact then we are unable to protect them,” said the head of the police force. Gisbert stressed the importance

Santander announce rise in profit SPAIN’S biggest bank posts an increase in its third quarter By Declan Scanlan SANTANDER, the Eurozone’s biggest bank, posted a 4.7 per cent rise in third quarter net profit on Thursday October 29. The bank’s net profit from July to September was €1.68 billion which was in line with expectations from analysts

who predicted a figure of €1.7 billion. The net interest income went up by 6.8 per cent to €7.98 billion. This reflects the difference between what clients are paid by lenders for deposits and what lenders charge for the loans. In the first nine months of 2015 profits went up to €5.1 billion which was a 17

Volkswagen losses GERMAN car manufacturer Volkswagen has reported its first quarterly loss for 15 years as it has added a large charge to its accounts to cover the costs of the much publicised emissions scandal.

Apple’s core business strong ELECTRONICS giant Apple has reported a jump in sales in the third quarter, thanks to sales of its iPhone, having sold 48 million iPhones in the period under review. Revenue was reported at $51.5 billion (€46.5 billion), up 22 per cent compared to the same period last year. It also stated that the net in-

come of $11.1 billion (€10 billion) for the period made it the company’s most successful year ever. In China, the biggest market for smartphones, Apple’s sales nearly doubled. It now has 25 stores and is opening a new one every month in a market that supplies about a quarter of its sales.

VW said it had set aside €6.7 billion to cover the expected cost, thus leaving it with a €2.52 billion pre-tax loss for the third quarter of the year.

More mortgages ACCORDING to the Spanish National Statistics Institute the number of new mortgages granted in August increased by 25.8 per cent with 19, 272 new loans agreed. Whilst this figure is far higher than the same time last year it represents a fall of 11.9 per cent from the July figure. Nevertheless, the actual amount granted was €2.01 billion.

M&S suspends website TO its great embarrassment, Marks & Spencer had to close down its website for two hours on October 27, after customers reported that they were able to partially view other people’s details when they accessed their accounts. The company said no one’s financial details were compromised by what it called an ‘internal

technical problem’ which was quickly corrected, but apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused. This follows on from the hacking of TalkTalk, in which it was suspected that bank account numbers and sort codes of customers may have been accessed although this proved not to be the case.

SEPTEMBER was a much less volatile month for both Sterling and Euro after fireworks in August. The pair has been range bound between 1.35 and 1.38 but we are now approaching the time where we will likely see movement higher and back towards 1.40. European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi used October’s meeting of the ECB (now every six weeks rather than each month) to suggest that further measures will be unleashed at December’s meeting. The announcement by itself is bearish for the Euro but Mr Draghi followed it up with the revelation that a cut in the deposit rate was discussed as one of the policy tools along with further Quantative Easing to try and push inflation back towards the ECB’s 2 per cent target. The double whammy pushed the Euro almost three cents low

STERLING TO EURO: The pair has been range bound between 1.35 and 1.38. against the Pound and downward momentum in the single currency is very likely to continue as we move towards the next meeting. As we stand we also still have a small risk of no action in December by the ECB, in which case we will see the Euro rebound.

We view this as unlikely due to the lengths the ECB went to to prepare the market that additional measures are coming and suggests that at least one of the two options, a deposit rate cut or further Quantative Easing or maybe both will be announced come December 2015.

Our forecast reflects our baseline scenario of further easing later this year along with the prospect of imminent rate increases in the UK driving the pair towards 1.45 by the middle of 2016, however there are some risks to this view. The pound since the ECB meeting has ridden higher on the coat tails of Euro weakness. However, a move towards a UK rate rise is not a foregone conclusion with Bank of England governor Mark Carney reflecting recently those interest rates may not necessarily need to go up. Growth in the UK for the third quarter was down from 0.7 per centon Quarter 2 to 0.5 per cent and this has been blamed on the slowdown in construction and manufacturing. In addition inflation remains subdued in the UK. Ongoing economic data will be very important in maintaining momentum for the pound and the move towards a rate increase. The next three months will be crucial for direction in GBP/EUR and as we stand the bias is to the upside.

EU roaming charges plummet AFTER several years of debate, the EU has finally declared that roaming charges on mobile phones within the EU are to be scrapped, although there will be some additional costs for consumers in the period of April 2016 to June 2017. The reason for this is that there will be a staged removal of charges so that on April 30 2016, the only additional charge allowed will be €0.05 per minute for calls, €0.02 for each SMS sent and €0.05 per megabyte of data used. On June 15, 2017 these extra charges will be abolished and users within the E U w i l l b e c h a rg e d t h e same as they would be in their home country. According to EU calculations, roaming costs from April 2016 will be up to 75 per cent cheaper than they are now.

New exchange of financial tax information AS residents of Spain are aware, in addition to implementation of the European Savings Directive, Spain has introduced the Modelo 720 declaration requiring all assets held outside of Spain over â‚Ź50,000 by value in various asset categories to be disclosed. While these measures now give the tax authorities a good picture of assets held outside the country by residents of Spain, the USA, OECD, EU and many other countries will be moving to a new higher transparency standard of cross-border financial disclosure starting in 2017. The Common Reporting Standards (CRS) as drafted by the OECD are now agreed and there is a group of early adopter countries including Spain, UK (Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Malta) which will be implementing this enhanced disclosure starting as early as September 2017. The financial information to be reported with respect to reportable accounts includes all types of invest-

The financial institutions that are required to report under the CRS do not only include banks and custodians but also other financial institutions such as brokers, certain collective investment vehicles and certain

insurance companies. Reportable accounts include accounts held by individuals and entities (which include trusts and foundations) and the standard includes a requirement to look through passive entities to report on the individuals that ultimately control these entities. In practical terms almost all financial assets wherever and however held, which can be attributable to an individual will become fully trans-

parent. Trusts, Swiss foundations and offshore companies will have assets fully reported. Many issues will need to be resolved and are likely to be dealt with by national laws as they are enacted. As this happens differences between common law countries including UK and civil code countries including Spain may result in unwanted outcomes for British expats here. As one possible example, tax laws already enacted in France (another civil code country) if adopted in Spain, would give Spanish settlors and potential beneficiaries of trusts cause for concern. The financial institutions will identify country of tax residence, and where dual residency is possible, report to both countries. The detail required includes name, address, date of birth, account number, balance/value, income and redemption proceeds if sales have been made. Your tax identification number will also be disclosed. In Spain the Modelo 720 declara-

tion requirement already covers many of the disclosure requirements but when implemented trustees and directors of offshore companies and financial institutions will automatically disclose the value of trust, foundation and company assets, insurance policy investments, dividends, interest and the value of non-interest earning cash deposits. The CRS agreement will plug obvious gaps in the existing EUSD provisions and it is hoped will much decrease tax evasion. OTHERS THINK IT A RECENT report states that over the next 12 months, Europe can expect some two million immigrants to cross over from the Middle East. Other reports have revealed that random searching has shown that a number of these people have been carrying ISIS and Jihadist propaganda (including pictures of beheadings). It would therefore be utterly naïve to deny that a percentage of these people may well be extremist or even terrorists. So let’s just have a look at these figures. If one in every 500 (a number I consider somewhat optimistic) were terrorist affiliated, that would mean that over the next few months, some 4,000 more potential killers will be let loose into Western society. I think it is also safe to assume that an even larger number have, or will soon have criminal intent, say one in every 200. This would result in a further 10,000

Do they not realise that if things continue as they are there will be bloodshed all across our hard won peaceful lands? When ordinary citizens realise that their elected representatives are doing nothing to stop them losing all they love and cherish, they will have no choice but to take matters into their own hands. It will only take a couple of attacks perpetrated by these so called refugees to ignite another war of the same ilk as the Crusades. Only this time it will be in our own back gardens. JUNTS PEL SI and CUP will totter hand-in-hand together along the road to independence. Junts pel Si was the cross-party proindependence candidature that fought – but didn’t quite win – Cataluña’s regional elections last October. They now need radical separatist party CUP to shore them up but the price now includes declaring unilateral independence. The Junts pel Si and CUP pact could herald the beginning of a split with the rest of Spain. But the September 27 results indicate that it would be the beginning of a split inside Cataluña, too.

SPAIN’S jaunty national anthem has no words and that’s the best thing about it. It is the old Marcha Real, first mentioned in 1761, adopted by Carlos III in 1770 and, apart from two 19th century interludes, has been used as the national anthem ever since. A Madrid composer-musician Victor Lago has got up a petition to add words and once he’s collected 500,000 signatures it can be presented as a Popular Legislative Initiative in the national parliament. The anthem’s wordlessness treads on no toes, offends no sensibilities and curses no foes. With luck Lago will fail to collect the signatures.

ONE doesn’t need a degree in economics to predict that the West cannot prevail. Anyone with the ability to run a whelk stall knows a business collapses when badly run and parasites plunder its assets. The streetwise have already started thinking banking sector. Well spotted. There are exceptions of course in which case Iceland comes to mind. There, the 26th banker has just received a lengthy prison sentence having been found guilty for his part in bringing about the 2008 economic collapse. Greed is often a far more powerful drug than the survival instinct. We often see a small time company embezzler nabbed because they couldn’t stop. Bankers are no different; they are simply more sophisticated when it comes to playing with high stakes. Believe me, the percentage of crooks in the City of

guilty men in prisons. In principle there is nothing

wrong with the economic potential of any Western nation. However, many such nations face tough times because politicians, in the pockets of the banking elite, are as bent as a dog’s back leg. The Ukraine, Europe’s largest country, has far more going for it than Iceland does. The oligarchs, today all of them Western rogues, are sucking the life out of that economy. The result is the Ukrainians are now among the most poverty stricken in the world. Iceland lacks such resources, yet is one of the world’s most successful economies. Iceland’s economy went awry in 2008 as did that of Britain, the US and the EU. I told you there is no need for a degree in economics to go figure. In much of the West, politicians use taxpayer’s money to reward mismanagement and blatant fraud in the banking sector. Iceland, on the other hand, detected the reason for their economic collapse. The arrest warrants were issued and banking executives arrested for fraud and market manipulation. The sentences range from four to five years. Get the picture? The bankers did and it can be seen on their mugshots.

WHEN I was knee high to a Roman Candle, bonfire night as we called it, was second only to Christmas as the most eagerly anticipated festivity of the year. We paraded him around before he gave the game away by breaking wind

Some are short with stripes, there are afros, blonde braids, and a variety of colours and shapes. It is an interesting comment on the way society has viewed its heroes over the past 50 years and to some extent, how the influx of immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and West Indies must have influenced appearances.

A warning to Britons in Spain if the UK votes to leave the EU I HAVE had a lovely long holiday out here but was very surprised at the level of serious discourse and informed discussion on the imminent UK EU In/Out vote. I write as my last chat with other Britons over a drink by the pool rather shocked me. A British woman who holidays here (52 weeks a year) is keen to leave the EU as ‘the EU costs too much’ but ‘the vote won’t affect me as I live here’. I had to explain that Britons are only here because we are part of the EU; that allows us to live here, work here, buy houses here and to enjoy free children’s education and pensioners’ healthcare. Just before I left, on News 24 BBC, I heard a round table discussion with a political economist who specialised in the EU. UK pensions paid in Spain may suffer the same fate as they did in Canada or Australia; there is no annual increase, the amount is frozen at the starting amount! The expert on the BBC suggested that as the Spanish government gain so much income from the British it would be unlikely that we would be expelled. However, just as David Cameron wants to impose a Foreigners Tax in the UK, so the Spanish government would impose a Foreigners Tax on British people in Spain of €2,000 or €3,000 or €5,000 per person per year. The effect of that would be that some 30 to 40 per cent of the British (only living on a state pension) would have to sell their houses as the tax would be too much to pay. The effect of that would be another 30 to 40 per cent decrease in Spanish house prices, which of course, as he said, helps the local Spanish who can-

I AM taking a week’s holiday in the UK, which means that my BuddyFit group are being left to their own devices. I am interested to see what they will do with regards to their daily exercise over the next seven days. Amusingly, I have a WhatsApp BuddyFit Group chat set up and I am viewing the messages that they are sending to each other whilst I am away. I am not sure if they know I can see that they are going for runs together on the paseo and arranging to keep some kind of exercise going amongst them. I can also see who is ducking out!! I feel it is crucial to have this support when you are trying to commit to an exercise or diet routine. I have found that training people in a small group can have a major advantage over 1-1 personal training with individuals.

• People like to be around others aspiring to the same goals. • They are less likely to miss their class sessions. • They are less likely to sabotage themselves when they see others are doing well Whilst I am in the UK, I am catching up with past clients who have become friends. I left them over a year ago after training some of them for over six years. I did 1-1 training with them. The only support they had was ME as their trainer. Some of them have taken the bull by the horns and gone on to do half marathons and various fitness events. Other older clients have fallen back and found it harder to keep up the commitment to their fitness plans without the push from yours truly. I know that if I had these clients training together in a group they would be more likely to get back on track and succeed. Therefore I believe My Group Training Method is crucial and adds real value to people’s lives when they are more than aware that they should be maintaining their health.

Reduce these risks by keeping up treatments, diet and exercise to control your diabetes. You should also stop smoking and keep an eye on your cholesterol and blood pressure levels. A specialist in internal medicine can help you control all these factors. -I didn’t notice any symptoms before my diagnosis. Are there any warning signs? -There are often no initial symptoms . When they do appear they can range from a dry mouth, extreme tiredness, frequent urination and infections to those of complications such as a heart attack or stroke. hair and leave for a few minutes wrapped in a towel before rinsing. If short on time use it when you rinse the hair after shampooing or add lemon juice for similar effects. Baking soda can also improve the appearance of dandruff as the sodium bicarbonate acts directly on the pH of your skin and therefore is a good natural remedy to prevent dandruff. Add the baking soda to your shampoo and leave the hair for a few minutes before rinsing.

Annie meets Sandy THERE is an old theatrical saying, never work with children or animals. However, this has been a happy experience for the cast of Footlights Theatre Group’s forthcoming production of the Broadway musical Annie. Apart from little orphan Annie, played by Jade Gray and the other 6 young orphans, they also have a 3-year-old golden Labrador called Buster, to play her dog Sandy. Buster is owned by cast members Jackie and Laura Shearer, and has proved a big hit with the whole cast. Tickets are now on sale for the four performances of the show, which will be performed in Alfaz del Pi on Friday November 13, and in Rojales the following night, Saturday November 14. DECIDING what plant to plant where, next to what, is a key part of the process of what we call painting with plants in a chapter of the book ‘Your Garden in Spain.’ There are various benefits of close co-planting several plants of the same variety and colour. We discuss this issue in this week’s column. ‘Just three blocks of three varieties of sages give a colourful autumn display’. CREATING A MASS OF COLOUR Many annuals, perennials and shrubs look much better when several plants of the same variety and colour are grouped compared to mixing individual

CLOSE CO-PLANTING: There are several benefits of co-planting plants of the same variety and colour. plants of various varieties and colour. This is especially useful in large gardens where several adjacent large blocks of differently coloured plants can be seen from a distance. The idea also works in small gardens as illustrated in the photo. GROUND COVER Plant five versus one ground cover plant say 20 centimetres

apart and you will soon have a sizeable solid block of foliage preventing the growth of weeds and acting as a live mulch to shade the tops of root balls and reduce the evaporation of moisture even in the hottest summer months. SCENTED BEDS An area of several square metres of scented lavender will

create a much more noticeable aroma therapeutic effect than just an individual plant in a mixed bed. STIMULATING TALL PLANTS Many readers will have seen copses of tall straight growing trees with attractive flowers on top. These are Paulownia trees being grown for the wood pellet

industry. They are planted just four metres apart to stimulate straight fast growth. Side shoots are pruned off when they are young. Harvesting of the trunks is done every three to five years and the stumps grow rapidly again for the next harvest. These trees are becoming a profitable crop for many families. who had abandoned

their vegetable and fruit growing lands. WIND BREAKS Boundary and internal hedges can be wonderful windbreaks if plants are planted just 25 centimetres versus 50 centimetres apart. If planted further apart they leave gaps through which winds can accelerate and damage smaller plants inside the hedges. MAXIMISING PRODUCTIVITY OF SMALL SPACES In previous articles about growing vegetables in black builders buckets, I have emphasised that seeds are sown close to get the greatest yields and long harvesting seasons. This will involve new European powers replacing some national authority over border control, and probably a special EU-wide levy to fund the new policies. But up to 15 of 28 EU countries are bitterly opposed. (Britain’s not involved.) Nobody in Europe would have an issue with Angela Merkel doing this within Germany’s own borders, either for moral reasons, or to plug a potential population deficit in its active workforce over the next 25 years. Imposing this on other countries,

DGT to test new traffic drones

ALREADY ground-breaking in their method of policing the roads from the air, the DGT has contracted a Spanish company to create an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or ‘drone,’ to monitor traffic. With many of their helicopters already fitted with the pinpoint accurate Pegasus radar system, the DGT already use their eyes in the sky for speed detection as well as traffic flow and this latest development could revolutionise the skies once again. However, the current legislation does not allow for the use of drones to monitor traffic, as the pilot of the drone has to be able to maintain visual contact with the aircraft, and so monitoring could only be done on a local level. That said, it is intended that the first prototypes will take to the air in the

summer of 2016, equipped with a camera to go about monitoring the conventional road network. There are numerous benefits to using a drone; it is much cheaper to fly than a conventional aircraft and offers a faster response. In addition to monitoring traffic flow, it is hoped that they could be used in emergency and incident response, following exceptional loads, fault detection and (eventually) enforcement. Drones are already in use by numerous police forces around the globe, often for monitoring purposes, and in America there was a public outcry in 2013 when California’s highways suddenly saw warning signs about law enforcement by drones, although on this occasion it was part of an art project and not real.

OK this week there are a couple of random things that need sorting out. Let’s start with alteration charges. I go to buy a suit. I look in the window and there it is - the very item of apparel I’m looking for. I go in the store and try it on. Now it’s not a cheap suit. In fact it’s very expensive. Well I think it is anyway. The trousers and sleeves are too long but I say ‘OK I’ll take it’ and the salesman says fine that will be €xxx and €40 for the alteration. Woah pal what? I’m not paying €40 for the alterations! Why would I want to pay €xxx for a suit that doesn’t fit me? If you want me to buy that suit you have to make it fit me. It’s not my problem, it’s yours. Now I know that there is massive profit margin in the top end of menswear and it would be common sense to take into account that very few people are a perfect match for their suit sizes, so just work the alteration

price into the suit price. It is different if you are buying something that is in a sale and has 60 per cent discount, but at full price not a chance of me paying one penny more than the ticket price. Changing the subject – what on earth has happened to product labelling? Do they think we are all raving bonkers? Here are some I have seen: On a box of eggs: ‘Allergy advice: this product contains eggs.’ Err really? On a fancy dress superman outfit: ‘wearing this outfit does not enable you to fly.’ Honestly, I’m not making this up. On a packet of peanuts: ‘Warning: this product contains nuts’. Please don’t laugh! It drives me crazy! Why do they do it? How about this? Heinz Ketchup instructions: ‘Put on food.’ How could I have ever worked that out on my own? Shampoo bottle: ‘Do not shampoo your eyes.’ And this on a bottle of aspirin: ‘Do not take if you are allergic to aspirin.’ I would love to know why they put these most obvious warnings. Is there a government office for this? Or is it left to the legal department to cover themselves? Whoever it is you may all be idiots, but we aren’t.

Chinese money in the Med THE Chinese look willing to invest heavily in the UK, according to the latest business news from Britain, but there doesn’t seem to have been much interest in the Spanish property market of late… not since the recession, in fact. Or is there? Reports from the property portal Juwai.com tell a different story. Apparently this has all changed in the last year as the report published stated that Spain is now the second most attractive Mediterranean country for Chinese investors wanting to pour money into the country and purchase property in this area of the Mediterranean. It went on to say that interest in investing money into Spanish real estate has soared by a massive 392 per cent in less than a year. If this is true, it would mean that Spain is now the number two country within the Mediterranean region that Chinese investors are considering when buying property, second only to Cyprus. AT one time fish was thought to be a major cause of skin disease in cats. Now we have all come to realise that the flea is the main culprit when it comes to skin irritation in cats and dogs. However, not many pet owners are aware that our pets suffer food allergies which can cause dermatological discomfort. In fact, according to Nigel Taylor the Express vet, 1 per cent of all skin problems in cats and dogs are caused by dietary allergies. Allergen reactions may be triggered in minutes, hours or days. Once an allergy to a protein is established, sensitivity is often lifelong. Dogs are mostly sensitive to beef and milk, while cats often do not get on with beef, milk or fish. Some dogs can digest the lactose in cow’s milk. Give a pet dog or cat milk and the undigested lactose provokes an upset stomach in no time. This is not a true allergy but demonstrates how sensitive to certain food pets can be. Stop the milk and your pet’s life will look up immediately. Most pets will react in some way by incorrect feeding and apart from allergic reactions one can expect flatulence, inconsistent

A new six turbine wind farm to power the Outer Hebrides domestic electricity requirements was opened on October 9, and will be the mainstay of this project to deliver a totally electric driving solution to the town. Pego Golf Society COMMITTEE plate medal competition at Oliva Nova Golf Course THE members played one of their ‘Major’ competitions on Tuesday October 27, and that was the ‘Committee Plate.’ They have twelve ‘Majors’ per year, and this one was a medal competition over 18 holes. This type of round is loved by some, but loathed by others. There were five guests on the day, and they were Chris Andersen, Denise Cooper, Richard Morris, John Snelling and his wife Susie Snelling. The winner of the guest prize was Chris Andersen, with a net score of 79 playing off 7. The course at Oliva Nova was not in good condition, with still a lot of casual water, and the grass on the fairways (which is the new re-seeded grass) was long and limp, so it would not support a ball, so consequently balls on the fairway fell down to the roots of the new grass. Difficult! In the main competition, the results were as follows:1st Place: Terry Oram with 68 playing off 18.5 2nd Place: Brendan Young with 71 playing off 16.3 3rd Place: Shaun O’Gorman with 71 playing off 4.4 4th Place: Andrew Harrison with 72 playing off 12

Altea Golf Club ON Saturday 24 October, more than 60 players of all nationalities participated in a sponsored tournament at the beautiful Altea Golf Club (formerly Don Cayo). This was the 23rd annual tournament sponsored by Caixaltea and must be one of the oldest and most regular tournaments on the Costa Blanca. With the high temperatures experienced over the summer behind them and the much needed rain over the last few weeks, meant that the course condition was much improved. The tournament started with high expectations from the players but the Altea golf course is always a challenge (as well as being picturesque) and high scores were difficult to come by. Even so the winners achieved very respectable scores. Benitachell Bowls Club “BBC” V “EMERALD ISLE” We seem to have been waiting for ages to play this match, but as the saying goes, everything comes to those who wait, well it certainly came to BBC with a 14 point to 2 point win for the BBC. We tried to balance the home and away sides in order to give us our best chance, and on the day it worked out well. Both home and away games were hard fought, but sheer determination and a lot of skill saw us through. Overall we had a comprehensive victory; we now await the results from the other games. “Tigers” v “Javea Quartz”

A better week for the Tigers as we drew the main teams 4 points each. However, Javea Quartz had the better shot difference and therefore took the extra 2 points. An enjoyable game against a very strong Javea side, minus the rain this time! Congratulations to Clive Langan, Sheila Corner, skip Terry Corner, Linda Smith, Ernie Pope and skip Mike Smith. Our lionesses showed us how not to give up and after being down 12 shots to 4 they came back to win 17 shots to 13, Giving us our only points of the day, well done Annie Jones , Yvonne Browne and Lynda Warnes. Orba Warblers Golf Society WEDNESDAY October 28, at Alicante Golf Course THE WARBLERS travelled south this week in search of some much needed warm weather and were not disappointed to find Alicante Golf Course bathed in sunshine. The day saw them play for the Spectrum IFA trophy, now in its third year and fast becoming a very popular event on the calendar. Each player was presented with a sleeve of balls on the first tee from our sponsor, which was a great start to the day, the extra balls coming in handy for quite a few of our players! Only two golfers managed to break par, in what was a tight tussle for the overall title, which was decided on count back after rigorous checks of score cards. Victorious on the day with a great score of 38pts (of a now 9.4Hcp), continuing a terrific run of form with back-to-back trophy wins, was Glynn Braidley. Division one winner, with a very credible 36pts (Hcp 8.6), was Vice Captain David Knight, second place went to the defending champion and Captain Bob Edwards with 32pts (Hcp 8.3) and completing the podium in third place was Chris Williamson, also on 32pts (Hcp 10.0). Division two was won by Malcolm Robinson with 38pts (Hcp 23.5), another great score but just missing out on the overall title by the narrowest of

margins (unlucky Malcolm). Second spot went to Peter Gibson with another creditable 36pts (Hcp 21.4) and completing their podium, best lady was, Rosemary Edwards with 35pts (Hcp 21.3). They welcomed five guests: John Hayward the sponsor, David French, Jerry Fitchett, Richard Vass and Brian Russell, with Brian taking the guest prize on 29pts. Nearest the pin prizes were,
