By Linda Hall The sword of Damocles no longer hangs over five villas owned by Britons in Oria. Changes in national and regional legislation are already kicking in for homeowners who unwittingly purchased properties on non-development land. The decision to call off the criminal court prosecution was influenced by amendments to Spain’s Penal Code regarding illegal homes purchased in good faith. No home may now be demolished without prior compensation and the Public Prosecution Department has withdrawn the demolition order against the five villas built in Oria between 2003 and 2004. The Prosecution Department’s decision was described as ‘important’ by Gerardo Vazquez, the lawyer representing the elderly British couple who own one of the villas. All the owners had asked him to convey their gratitude for the administration’s ‘sensitivity’ prompted by the Penal Code changes.

Both took part in the different events organised in all of the member municipalities to mark the first edition of Loveliest Towns Day. “This is the first time that this event has been held,” explained Francisco

Mestre who is the director of the association. “It is committed to beauty as a unifying feature for the future of these small but idyllic locations.” Mayors in the association’s 35 member towns hoisted the association flag and read a statement encouraging national organisations like Turespaña to become more involved helping these localities. “The towns are completely authentic examples of what it is to be Spanish

from the point of view of heritage, food and customs,” Mestre said. The majority of the municipalities belonging to the association held open days with free entrance to museums and other tourist attractions. Towns belonging to the network are drawn from all parts of Spain from Asturias to Aragon, Castilla-Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria, Valencia and the Canary Islands.

Baited meat left out for man’s dogs ADRA resident, Ramon Manzano, believes someone wants to harm his dogs. Returning home after a walk with Sira, Mini and Rumbo, he saw around 60 pieces of

sausage on the pavement. The dogs made straight for them but Ramon suspected that something was not right and inspected the sausages, placed conveniently outside

his door. He found they contained nails and pieces of glass, guaranteeing an agonising and slow death for his three dogs. Two dogs owned by Ramon

have died after eating poisoned meat in the last 10 years, he revealed. “It’s obvious that someone wants to get rid of my pets,” he said.

New electricity tariffs introduced on October 1 DIFFERENT method of charging based on hourly usage By John Smith WITHOUT a great deal of publicity, a number of the larger electricity companies introduced a new method of charging for electricity based on hourly usage with each hour having a different tariff, which can also change depending upon the day of usage. In theory, there could be 168 different tariffs each week and even they could change depending on whether it’s a windy day, as if it is, more wind power comes into play and electricity could get cheaper. Organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau seem a little ambivalent as to whether there will be any real saving although they think on balance there may be. They do point out, however, that a high per-

With the new regulation in force, more companies can join if they meet certain requisites. There is some confusion as to the likely cost of changing the meter but according to information received, one of the ‘main players’ has indicated a €9 charge for changing the meter followed by an 81- cent monthly rental charge. Beware the unscrupulous who may try to take advantage of this change and always contact your electricity supplier as they are the ideal company to make any changes for you.

They were spending an ‘Integration Weekend’ there, organised by the international Erasmus Student Network and the Almeria Erasmus association. Nijar Mayor Esperanza Perez Felices and the town hall’s Youth Councillor Ainhoa Salmeron welcomed them in the Rodalquilar amphitheatre. “Right now you are in a national park and biosphere reserve that you will remember for years to come,” Perez said, adding that she hoped that they would all want to return one day in the future.

Mojacar beach is topped and tailed RUBBISH removed from seabed and sand By Linda hall A MOJACAR beach and the seabed have had a thorough clean-up. Mojacar Diving Centre, members of the public, town hall employees and Civil Defence members cleared away rubbish which in some cases needs 450 years to biodegrade. The event was organised to raise public awareness of sea pollution and the 30 volunteers were given an environmental talk on the Rumina beach near the mouth of the River Aguas. The diving team was composed of beginners and advanced divers while children and adults, who included Councillors Agustin Montoya and Emmanuel Aguera, removed litter from the beach. Possible solutions for El Algarrobico A RULING on the El Algarrobico hotel should arrive soon from the Supreme Court. The tribunal will rule whether the land where the hotel was constructed on the El Algarrobico beach near Carboneras was classified for development or if the building is situated too near the shoreline. It must also decide whether the land now belongs to the regional government.

In a rare interview Jose Rodriguez Losada, director general of the Algarrobico’s owners Azata del Sol, said the company was prepared to relocate the hotel “brick by brick” to prevent demolition and provide employment. Losada also suggested using the unoccupied building as an environmental centre, a hotel school or for activities linked to the sea.

Mallorca air route will continue TWICE-WEEKLY flights have been a success

They were expected to finish with the introduction of the winter schedule at the end of October but the route’s excellent results encouraged the Iberia subsidiary to continue throughout the off-season. The Thursday and Sunday flights proved popular with

Almeria residents working in Mallorca during the summer as well as tourists and the service will continue until at least March next year, sources said. Air Nostrum has flown from Almeria’s El Alquian airport to Madrid without interruption since 1997 and to Melilla Spain’s enclave in North Africa - since 2001. The Sevilla route started in 2010 and this summer saw the beginning of the Palma de Mallorca service, filling the

gap left by the discontinued Air Berlin connection. The Madrid route accounts for 43 per cent of Air Nostrum’s passengers while the Sevilla connection increased by 52 per cent in the first six months of this year compared with the same period in 2014. In what has been a mediocre year for El Alquian, the Iberia subsidiary now accounts for almost a third of the passengers using the airport.

A passion for getting things done Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Past experiences spur Jayne Fisher on to help mistreated and abandoned animals. JAYNE FISHER has always used her skills to help others who are less fortunate than most. She is a woman who sees the bigger picture, and is focused on how to achieve the desired results. She arrived in Spain in 2005, after working in Edinburgh as the Chief Executive of a home for the disabled. She was responsible for finding suitable homes for those who needed special physical requirements and she made sure that ongoing support was at hand. From this background, it is no surprise that Jayne still possessed the passion to get things done when she and her husband Bill bought their home here in Spain. She had witnessed terrible sights and many abandoned animals - two being left to starve in the mountains which rang alarm bells in her conscience that something had to be done. Being in a position to volunteer help, Jane contacted a small charity that had been operating, named ADANA, which was in desperate need of obtaining ongoing funds. She recalled: “I began to distribute tin money boxes all around the area just to get money coming in for the shelter. The problem was plain to see that you need ongoing funds, and not just the one-off influx from an event.” Jayne began to help organise events along with other volunteers, and being treasurer she has to make sure that that tap always flows.

She added: “In five years from now, I would like to see the ADANA shelter with electricity and be up to a high standard without having to constantly battle on with short-term projects.” It is her rewards that drive her on, as she remarked: “When you see an animal that has been through the rough times and totally unwanted, to witness them in their new home is a feeling that money cannot buy. “It’s not just about animals, but it is also how animals can bring joy to children or an older person. It works for both parties and makes me happy to see comfort in others in that way.” Between organising and overseeing programmes including the ‘Sponsor a Dog’ programme, Jayne is also the president of her home community. She admits that she has a desire for team work, moving forward and making a change. She is always grateful for support from organisations, including Euro Weekly News, in sponsoring dog shows and the like. Her faith in the community and her need for giving things back is what is at the heart of her persona. She also finds strength in her local church and is always there to support others around her.

River Antas needs a solution VERA Town Hhall voted to take legal action against the central government for delays over controlling the River Antas. “The town hall is obliged to defend the interests of Vera residents and their personal and material safety,” said spokesman Francisco Vazquez. The Pueblo-Laguna de Vera area at the river mouth, where flooding occurs when the usually-dry watercourse overflows during periods of torrential rain, is officially recognised as a black spot by the regional government. The definitive solution for the problem is rechannelling the Antas which caused catastrophic floods in September 1989 and 2012, the town hall said. The regional ombudsman suggested that as the Junta de Andalucia and the central government in Madrid cannot decide who is responsible for the river, the problem should be referred to the Junta-State Bilateral Cooperation Committee. Once this is settled, the Antas can be channelled and its banks reinforced to prevent a repetition of past disasters.

and Maria Trinidad Perez, Chief Inspector of Adra’s Local Police force. Also present were Lieutenant Isacio Peinado, who heads the local Guardia Civil post and Cesar Arroniz, the councillor responsible for Public Safety. After the flag was hoisted and the national anthem

played, Manuel Cortes drew attention to the day-to-day work of the Local Police and its importance in guaranteeing citizen safety and wellbeing. He and the chief inspector also thanked the police for the vital part they played in the September 7 floods.

Mojacar Town Council offers free school materials for low income families AIM is to continue working for those in need with assistance and subsidies for activities such as sports and music CONTINUING on from the last legislature, Mojacar Town Council will continue its policy of helping families in need. In this regard, the council led by the popular Rosmari Cano, is aware of the great difficulty which many families in the municipality face at the beginning of each year to purchase school supplies. The administration has designed a scheme with the aim of collaborating with them and reducing this economic burden they face each year. The beneficiaries of these subsidies may be pursuing their studies at high school, junior

school, nursery and even in university. Councillor for Social Services, Raquel Belmonte said, “Unfortunately, many families are so poor and are awarded these grants to help their children have equal access to education, thereby contributing to a better future. “ We w i l l c o n t i n u e w o r k i n g f o r t h e poorest families with assistance and subsidies for activities such as sports and attending the music school. EL JUEVES: Court ruled they did not ridicule a Spanish Legion corporal.

Not for a laugh CARTOON was not an affront said court By Linda Hall THE Supreme Court ruled that El Jueves magazine did not ridicule a Spanish Legion corporal from the Viator base. The soldier claimed €30,000 damages, alleging that the satirical magazine breached “his honour, image and privacy” by using his photograph in October 2008. Only the corporal’s torso

was used in a photomontage, his face obscured with clown’s make-up and totally unrecognisable, the court decided. “Anything to keep Rajoy amused,” a speech balloon said. This referred to Mariano Rajoy - then leader of the Opposition - who was overheard complaining to party grandee Javier Arenas: “Tomorrow I’ve got the pain in the a**e

of a military parade.” He was due to attend the October 12 Dia de la Hispanidad march-past and the magazine was not criticising the corporal or the Legion, but Mariano Rajoy, the Supreme Court ruled. The photograph used for the montage was accessible to the public and the judges concluded that in this instance “freedom of speech took priority of the appellant’s image rights.”

Navy called in after bomb find EXPLOSIVE believed to date from the Civil WAR By Linda Hall SPECIALISTS from the La Algameca naval base (Cartagena) detonated a bomb discovered off Almeria’s El Zapillo beach. It was located two days previously by amateur divers one kilometre offshore at a depth of 15 metres. They immediately alerted the Guardia Civil who sent divers from the GEAS unit to photograph and assess the 80centimetre bomb that is believed to date from the 1936-1939 Civil War. The Maritime Action unit’s Operations and Observation centre was warned of the find and the area within a 500-metre radius of the bomb was cordoned-off. A navy bomb disposal unit arrived the following day to detonate the bomb in a controlled explosion and remove the resulting debris.

Accounts settled in La Chanca POLICE are investigating the circumstances of a stabbing in Almeria City’s La Chanca district. The victim was taken by ambulance to Torrecardenas hospital after he was found lying on the ground in Calle Miras Romera with a neck wound and a blow to the head. His injuries were sustained during an argument with another person who led the scene, according to witnesses.

Sources close to the case revealed that the injured man is a habitual delinquent who is well known to the police and has an extensive criminal record for drug dealing and robbery with violence. Police, who scoured the area immediately afterwards for the attacker without success, believe that the incident was likely to be a settling of accounts, the same sources said.

Nun sues for defamation COUSINS Ascension Lopez and Dolores Baena Lopez finally faced each other in court. The first is the Almeria president of SOS Bebes Robados, an association whose members were given in adoption as newborns and who suspect that they were taken without their birth mothers’ consent. Dolores Baena Lopez is a nun and mediated in Ascension’s adoption by her aunt and uncle who by then were in their 60s. Her cousin claims she organised the adoption which cost her adoptive parents 250,000 pesetas (€1,500) in 1964. Ascension Lopez, who was born in the Hospital de las Cinco Llagas in Sevilla, filed a formal complaint against Sister of Charity, Sor Dolores. She has not produced documents or witnesses to back up her suspicions and her cousin is now suing her for defamation. The accusations are damaging her reputation, that of the Sisters of Charity and Nuevo Rumbo, the rehabilitation programme for drug addicts that she founded in Almeria, Sor Dolores said. “What she’s saying is ridiculous,” the nun said during her Almeria high court appearance. “Nobody was behind the adoption, everything was legal and nobody was paid anything.” The newborn baby was abandoned at birth and no details existed of her biological parents. “She asked me who they were and I have always told her the truth: I don’t know,” Sor Dolores told the court.

Mines could bring back prosperity THE socialists on Gergal Council are urging the town hall to reopen the town’s iron ore mines. Over the last decades Gergal has suffered an important reduction in the number of people on the padron, the party will say in a motion it plans to present at the next plenary meeting.

This is due to the lack of employment opportunities which could provide a stable way of life, maintained party spokesman Antonio Ruano, but recovering Gergal’s mining industry could provide jobs and prosperity. “At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Gergal en-

Give pups a chance plea CITY HALL asked to modify bylaw By Linda Hall PUPPIES from dangerous breeds are routinely put down at the Almeria City animal shelter. In accordance with a city bylaw, they must be put down after 10 days if unclaimed by their owners. Following a meeting with the Pacma animal protection association, Ciudadanos (Cs) spokesman Miguel Cazorla asked the city council to think twice about this practice. The issue arose during a municipal debate on subsidies for local groups and associations. Pacma has explained to him that experts do not believe that any pup-

py is potentially dangerous, Cazorla said. Putting it down to prevent future danger is totally disproportionate because it ignores the importance of training, Pacma said. So long as the initiative receives favourable technical reports, Ciudadanos Almeria wants the council to examine the possibility of modifying the bylaw which allows the puppies only 10 days at the shelter before they are put down. According to the animal defence platform Liberacion Animal approximately 200 potentially dangerous dogs, crossbreeds and puppies are put down at the municipal shelter each year.

Council votes for return to public water SOLUTION sought for expat residents By Eleanor Hawkins ALBANCHEZ hopes to revert to Gestion de Aguas del Levante Almeriense (Galasa) for its domestic water. The town hall voted recently for a return to public sector Galasa two years after the previous council contracted its domestic supply elsewhere. Mayor Anabel Padilla recently met Galasa executives to discuss the changeover and the 180 homes in Los Llanos and Los Angeles whose water has been cut off. Through no fault of their own, they were using an unauthorised supply although, as reported in the Euro Weekly News, the town hall announced

that it would find a solution for the mainly British and Belgian expatriates who were sold irregularly-built homes. The Galasa meeting was satisfactory, Padilla revealed: “They explained that their engineers need to inspect the water pipes and send their findings to the Diputación. A favourable report would be the first step towards restoring the service for these residents.” Javier Aureliano Garcia, Vice-President of the Galasa board, took the same line. The water company was not responsible for the situation but would do everything legally possible to redress it and ensure that householders did not suffer, he said.

Politicians’ assets there to be seen THE Almeria City Hall website now details the financial assets of the corporation’s 27 councillors. Bank balances of 13 Partido Popular councillors, nine from the PSOE, three from Ciudadanos and two from Izquierda Unida-Los Verdes are listed, with properties owned outright or jointly and their values. There is also a record of the value, make and year of all cars worth more than €6,000 as well as any boats they may own. The information was filed when the councillors - some new and some who were returning to city hall - were sworn in last June. All other public posts they hold are listed, as are sources of income other than their councillors’ salaries, bank loans, pension schemes, insurance policies and the size of their mortgages.

SOONER or later, Greece will start to dominate Euro-related news again, now that Alexis Tsipras and his left-wing party have been sworn back into power. After the latest general elections, Mr Tsipras breezed back into the poisoned hotseat with even more power than before. The anti-austerity leader had managed to strike a last-minute deal with its creditors for a sum of €86bn, preventing Greece from defaulting on its debts and being forced out of the Eurozone. Investors are still pointing to Greece’s long-term issues as the key indicator for Euro deterioration against most major counterparts into the first quarter of 2016.

ANTICIPATION: It is believed that the pound to euro rate could head towards 1.40. There is an air of anticipation that GBPEUR could start to head back towards

1.40 once the US finally starts to move its own interest rates.

In other news, the EU Quantitative Easing Programme (QE) may be allowed to continue beyond its scheduled expiry date of September 2016. After its early success and signs of real economic improvement, questions are starting to surface again as to whether the bond-purchasing programme may need to be extended, due mainly to slow growth and weak inflation figures. The latest figures for September actually showed that the Eurozone had ‘deflated’ as prices fell by 0.1 per cent. This is the first time in six months that the numbers have fallen into negative territory. President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, had warned this could happen, so there were no sudden shocks for the market. There are expectations that Mr Draghi wants to keep the Euro relatively weak, especially against the greenback, as exports have been gaining from a frail currency pairing of EURUSD.

SEPTEMBER saw consumer prices in Spain fall at their fastest rate in seven months, according to early estimates from the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE), partly due to lower energy costs. While retail sales continue to grow on the back of increasing demand, the overall view from the EU is that Spain is currently enjoying a period of negative inflation. There are indications that, for the first time in eight months, Germany will also record negative inflation during September. While high inflation is considered to be bad for any economy, less prominence is given to negative inflation but this latest news may not be welcomed by the European Central Bank, which has a programme of quantitative easing aimed at an overall inflation rate of 2 per cent across Europe, which it considers will help economic growth within the Eurozone.

Precious metal prices are under scrutiny from Swiss Authorities FOR many years, it has always been a tradition that in times of financial disturbance, precious metals in general, and gold in particular, are an ideal home for investments rather than stocks and shares. The metal has been particularly volatile since the global market turndown and both gold and silver have hit record prices. Although they have retrenched to some extent, they still stand at much higher levels than before the turn-down; gold more so than silver. Like so many other areas of finance, however, the question now arises as to whether these prices have been orchestrated over the years as authorities in Switzerland have announced a probe into global banks over the suspected manipulation of the price of precious metals. The Swiss Competition Commission (Comco) has said it will investigate seven banks saying it had “indications” that the banks had “possibly concluded illegal competition-defying deals.” Comco said its investigation will include Barclays, Deutsche Bank, HS-

It seems rather disheartening to write out your company’s obituary before it is born. Running a business is akin to running a gauntlet. You set your hopes high, you invest, you set out your business plan and you work hard to make your business a success. Facing hard times, many businesses resort to dishonest practices to survive. I believe ‘sloppiness’ at the till to be institutionalised robbery. Overcharging or failure to record a discount happens far too often for it to be an oversight. I recall the Benidorm bar owner who advertised €1 pints. When the half-pint glasses were questioned, he replied: “These are Benidorm pints, señor.” In another Costa resort, a large beer and baguette was advertised for just €4. It would take only a couple of tourist office staff to invite complaints and patrol tourist areas looking out for evidence of sharp practice. Those businesses resorting to cheating should be shown a ‘red card’ and their trading licence removed if they are repeat offenders. This simple solution would help to launder a resort’s image and all legitimate businesses would benefit as a result. Who knows, it may well reduce the number of failed businesses.

OTHERS THINK IT WATCHING ‘Comrade Corbyn’ address last week’s Labour Party Conference, I found myself experiencing odd twinges of deja vu. Then it dawned on me; his rhetoric was exactly like the conversations we had back in the 60s. The long ‘flower-power,’ ‘pot-inspired’ exchanges of young enthusiastic ideas on how we could change the world. Deep into the night we would discuss the dreams and ideals that would enable us all to live happily ever after in a conflict-free, loving environment; all with no idea at all how to turn our schemes into reality. Of course, we were hopelessly naive and, most important of all, extremely young and painfully ignorant of the ways of the world and its workings. However, in the main, we were completely harmless. And that’s where the similarity between Mr Corbyn and the flowerpower idealists of old falls down. This man is not some starry-eyed, naive youngster, hoping to turn the world into a

peace loving Shangri-La. In my opinion he is a deceit riddled, extremely experienced, highly dangerous far-left operator, using these ideals to snare as many (mainly young) people as possible into embracing him as a kind of 21stcentury saviour who will lead his people to some euphoric Utopia. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. I believe this man is fully aware that his policies will deliver us into Communism and the clutches of our enemies. Not his enemies of course; his record of embracing our adversaries has been well chronicled over the years. His are the politics of stealth. I shudder when I see the faces that gaze up at him. I saw the same look on the followers of David Koresh, Jim Jones and Charles Manson; all dangerous manipulators who also promised their followers they could lead them to the ‘Promised Land’ and who held far less influential positions than Jeremy Cobyn and his TUC cronies. SQUATTING between Poland and Latvia is insular malevolent Lithuania. After 10 blissful days in Latvia and Estonia we were warned against visiting this Baltic State but decided to go anyway. Speak English not Russian was the advice given. Problem; the Lithuanians dislike Russians but few speak English. At the border our documents were scrutinised by grim-faced border control officers. The Red Army departed in 1991 but left the Soviet mind-set behind. The following day our tetchy bus driver took us to Kaunas, parts of which resembles Berlin 1945. There, the clown hit the brakes so savagely an unfortunate lady passenger was catapulted against the bus windscreen shattering it. The ambulance and police arrived 20-minutes later; for all the use they were why did they bother? It doesn’t get any better in chip-on-its-shoulderland. It was now clear why a Lithuanian explained that commuters prefer the impersonality of the train as a travel alternative. WHAT the hell is wrong with people? Last week it was reported that a dog whose legs had been tied together had been rescued from a canal in Rojales. The week before, a disturbing picture of a number of dead cats was published in one of the local papers. They were subjects of a mass poisoning in Pilar de la Horadada and more are thought to have died the same way. In our own Los Dolses neighbourhood, two cats - both wearing collars and obviously somebody’s pets - have also been poisoned. On Saturday whilst enjoying our regular morning coffee, we observed a young girl struggling with a decrepit looking pet carry basket which she took into the nearby Little Pod charity shop. We could see her in conversation with one of the volunteers, gesturing toward the basket, after several minutes of

THERE has been something more than a little suggestive of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland about the run up to the Catalan elections. There were however a few jokers in the pack as Tweedledum was played by Artur Mas, president of the pro-secession party and Tweedledee was well portrayed by prime minister Mariano Rajoy. As the simple election became a referendum in the eyes of Mr Mas, so he became the Knave of Hearts in the eyes of Mr Rajoy. Rather than shout ‘Off with his head,’ the prime minister became the King of Hearts as first Mr Mas and his party were investigated for alleged fraud and then members were charged with conducting an illegal referendum in 2014. The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party saw Jean-Claude Juncker, assisted by March Hare Angela Merkel and Dormouse David Cameron all join in on the side of Spain warning Mr Mas of the dire consequences of declaring independence. The fact that less than 50 per cent of those who voted supported the secessionist parties didn’t really bother Mr Mas and he indicated that within 18 months the autonomous community of Catalonia would be ready to launch itself as the newest country in Europe. Then - they all woke up. Hopefully after the ritual clashing of horns, there will be a sensible solution.

Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

WHEN I first arrived to work in Spain, I got the job of supervising and paying the workers on the estate my brother had bought. This was really a cover-up for making sure they showed up for work and continued there all day. Worse yet, on payday Friday, if you did pay them all they were owed they wouldn’t come back for 10 days, or until their money ran out. In the meantime, you were left pandering to their complaining wives who had no money to feed the children. When I became depressed enough I would drive to other villages and look for the lost boys and threaten to tell their wives where they were. The most itinerant offenders came from the ‘gypsy village of Turre’. My brother returned two years ago to continue taking ‘oral histories’ of those characters only to discover that the same folk he had known 40 years earlier were no longer proud gypsies but just ordinary Spanish peasants. It wasn’t a heritage that they were arrogant about any longer.

On my work listings I had noted the two most frequent culprits constantly MIA (Missing in Action) were a Paco and Jose. To make sure they completed a full shift I had noted down their names and family names. That was of little use as no matter how I entered them in the ledger they always became Santiago Santiago Santiago. Both shared an identical wicked streak of constant and perpetual wandering. If a circus came to town they’d be automatically missing from work. I decided to award these two characters the additional moniker of ‘feo’ (ugly) and ‘muy feo’ (very ugly) to make sure when they were paid one didn’t get the other’s money. The elder was a very good brickie and earned much more than the common day labourer. My system worked well until another circus showed up in distant Vera. Friday came and went and early on Sunday morning their wives had made the journey to my house and were outside throwing stones at my dog. They needed money and quickly and weren’t leaving until they got something. I had the delicate task of trying to discern whose partner was the uglier. Questions were asked and finally I gave in to the mujer that swore the most. Both were paid but I got it wrong. And until this day, the wife of the day labourer has not returned the overpayment to the other.

and the only way either of them can go is along a one-way street leading to absolutely nowhere. The pro-independence faction, Junts pel Si and CUP, won more seats in the Cataluña parliament than the other parties together but only received 47.8 per cent of the total number of votes. Ironically, had the national government

athorised an independence referendum, the majority of Catalans would not have voted for it.

DURING an appearance at the Radio Festival in London last week, the broadcaster told delegates that “Top Gear is not on until May, that’s seven months, three days and 18 hours [from now].” When the BBC ended its relationship with Evans’s predecessor Jeremy Clarkson, the corporation immediately confirmed plans to bring Top Gear back to screens in 2016. However, the BBC has since told Digital Spy that it won’t be confirming exact transmission dates for the show at the moment. Evans’s former Big Breakfast producer Lisa Clark has joined the all-new Top Gear crew, but

Acts will be asked to submit an original track, before an industry panel whittles the entrants down. Then, the British public will vote for who they want to represent the UK. Host Graham Norton thinks the new search for a song element is a great idea. When it comes to the Eurovision Song Contest, the UK’s been on the bad end of things in recent years. Jemini’s infamous 2003 ‘nul points’ result for ‘Cry Baby’ was

the first time the country came last in the contest, though it was repeated in 2008 with former X Factor finalist Andy Abraham, then in 2010 with Josh Dubovie. In this year’s competition, Electro Velvet just managed to stay off the bottom of the scoreboard but only scored five points, the country’s worst since 2003. Tourists are getting fed up with all animal abuse in Spain I REFER to your article about the Mijas donkeys in last week’s paper (1578). Like many other tourists we love the Mijas Pueblo and there is nothing against people trying to make a living with donkey carts. But there are rules to follow all the way. These are living creatures with the same feelings like humans, so if they need to work, they need to be taken GOOD care of. Meaning getting proper food and being able to drink in the extreme heat of Spain. Also standing and waiting for the next ride they should have shade. And of course they shouldn’t be beaten! If the owners fail on these points, their licence should be taken away and they shouldn’t be allowed to execute their profession any more. The video of the beating and dragging the donkey is not only harmful to the animal, but also to tourism! Fact is that tourists are getting fed up with all animal abuse in Spain, whether it is concerning the donkeys, the hunting, the bullfighting and abandoning domestic animals. Good for her! WHILE reading your newspaper I came across the article where Amina Axelsson jumped the bullring with a protest sign. All I can say is : GOOD FOR HER! Same as Peter Janssen from Holland and Victoria Ruiz from Spain. We have to get more attention for these atrocities that are still being done to these poor creatures. Let us not forget we are talking about mammals. They have the same feelings as human beings, like pain and fear. What is wrong with people that they can enjoy the torture, pain and death of an innocent animal? On top of that it is subsidised by the European Union. Also a lot of town halls support the bullfighting. In the meantime, thousands of people can’t get proper health care or education because of the lack of money. In other words: This cruel-

Tragic year for Spanish roads

Keep up the good work CONCERNING the article, ‘Mijas donkey taxi the next step’: I hope all this works out as it sounds as if this man is very sincere in this situation and it sounds a very good idea! There must be quite a few people that live up there who would volunteer a couple of hours a week to this scheme... wish I lived there, I know I would! Beautiful place and especially only children/light weight teenagers on the donkeys. I was there in June and they are lovely creatures. I have been and visited on a few occasions over the years and they are one of the attractions, but I always feel sorry for them with heavy adults sitting on them. Keep up the good work. THE main problem on Spanish roads are: Driving too close to the vehicle in front, talking while on the phone, cutting people up when exiting a road and not respecting the give way signs, but then if you don’t actually teach people how to drive properly then what do they expect! Tips for keeping your back healthy CENTRO PHYSIS offer some helpful advice... IN our day-to-day life we’re in constant motion and our backs bear the consequences of this movement. Sometimes we adopt incorrect postures, lift too much weight or carry out repetitive movements while standing in bad positions. Amongst daily tasks, for example, we sweep, mop floors, do gardening chores, iron, spend long periods sitting down or lying down and stay in the same position for a long time. These tips will help reduce the stress and damage to our backbones. Below we will explain how to correctly carry out certain tasks such as lifting objects and lying down.

1. Painting, stretching for high-up items What is the most backfriendly way to carry out movements that involve reaching overhead? Painting or stretching for high-up items, for example... In these cases, we often stretch our arms too much and put extra stress on our backs. Ideally, steps or a ladder should be used to avoid overstretching or holding difficult positions. Remember this tip: prevention is much easier than treatment; once the damage is done, it’s too late! 2. Tips and correct sleeping positions The best position to sleep in is on our backs or sides as

sleeping face-down can put stress on the waist and forces the neck to twist, a position which should not be kept for long periods of time. The trick for sleeping on your back is: Put a pillow under your knees. The trick for sleeping on your side is: Hugging a cushion or pillow is a comfortable position for your arms, which will also stop you turning onto your front in your sleep. It’s also a good idea to put a pillow between your knees. This will help you sleep comfortably. Sweet dreams!

Millions affected by lack of iron MOST people dismiss their tiredness and lack of energy due to running around and leading busy lives, but fatigue could hide a more serious underlying problem: iron deficiency. Millions of people are not getting enough iron and it is the most common nutritional gap in the UK with a survey showing almost one in four women has a low iron intake.

Common signs are tiredness and lethargy, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and a pale complexion, but less common symptoms can be headache, an altered sense of taste and hair loss. The scale alone is not an adequate tool to show an overall picture when it comes to the change process of body shape, imbalance correction and new muscle tone. Photographs are priceless, as the saying goes… ‘The camera never lies,’ and it is a great motivator for someone to see a true picture of the way they looked at the start of their journey and how they look three months later. I had a client recently that did a before and after bikini photo, and the changes in her body after three months were astounding. This in itself was a great motivator to keep her on the right track. Even after many years of training, I too am aware that it can be hard to maintain your discipline and motivation unless you can actually see for yourself the results of your effort and hard work. A leading cause of sick leave BACK pain is one of the main reasons workers are forced to take time off with three in 10 people in the UK now having to take sick days because of it, amounting to nearly 10 million days. In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS I have been retired now for some years I have a lot of time on my hand. This, of course, is something cold callers don’t know and although I don’t need someone to sort out my PPI I’m quite happy to wind them up! “Hi, is this a good time to talk to you about PPI?” Me: “Sure”. Fifteen minutes later I say, “Excuse me, can you start again as I have short term memory loss and I don’t remember why you called me or did I call you? Is that you? Mum/Dad?” Then they hang up and I’ve killed more time. But my favourite phone call is from the bank: “Hello is that Mr Senker? This is Mary from HSBC”. “Yes it’s me.” Mary: “OK I just need to ask you some

security questions”. Me: “What? You called me, you know it’s me!” Mary: “Yes but before I can continue I need you to answer a few questions.” Me: “How do I know you are Mary from HSBC? I need YOU to answer some questions. So what’s your mother’s maiden name? Your first car? The name of your first pet?” This goes on for a few minutes and we finally decide that we are both who we say we are, or in her case I am the person she phoned. On MY mobile phone! So what’s the problem? Apparently I went on holiday without telling them! “Sorry why do I have to tell you I’m going on holiday?” “Because we noticed your card was used in a hotel in Las Vegas.” “You mean the hotel I booked with this credit card six months ago and the same card I paid for the flight with?” “Err yes.” So another 20 minutes gone. What shall I do now? Maybe Movistar or Orange will phone me and I can listen to someone rattling off to me in Spanish for 10 minutes before I say “Lo siento no hablo Espanol.”

New traffic laws for children in vehicles AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers. NEW traffic laws came into force last week in Spain with the main objective of protecting children in cars. Now, all children measuring 135cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age, and they must be in the correct seat and restraint according to their age and weight. There are a number of exceptions to the rules, for example, when the vehicle does not have rear seats, when all rear seats are already occupied by others under the same characteristics and where it is not possible to install approved child seat restraints in those rear seats. Children can then sit in the front seat but must still wear the appropriate restraint until they are taller than 150cm and then they can use the vehicle seat belt. This amendment of article 117 also stipulates that child restraints must be installed in the vehicle in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer. The modification of this law reflects the scientific evidence from numerous studies that demonstrate the benefit of children travelling in the rear seats of vehicles in order to strengthen their protection. A study in the USA looked at 5,751 vehicle occupants under the age of 15 who had suffered a serious car incident. The study showed that sitting in the back seat had a protective effect with respect to serious injury or death. A further study in Aus-

The risk of death was four times higher if the child was under the age of one. Not only is the risk of injury higher in the front seats, but also the severity of injuries sustained, according to the Crash Injury Research Engineering Network (CIREN). Spain’s DGT has also seen growing concerns for safety of children in vehicles. In 2014, two of the 14 children under 12 years of age who were killed whilst travelling in vehicles were not wearing any safety device at the time of the accident.

It’s no laughing matter in Vera! ESPECIALLY if you miss this astounding play The House Of Bernarda Alba being performed by the Indalo Players THIS classic Spanish play by Federico Garcia Lorca will be performed at Cine Teatro Municipal Regio, Calle Radio Nacional, Vera on October 15, 16 and 17 by the Indalo players. Director Janet Franklin aims to show the relevance of this often angst ridden play to modern day society and prove that the themes are timeless and manages to imbue the play with stunning subtleties of not only pain and control but also humour and pathos. Lorca was a homosexual poet and writer in the strictly Catholic Spain in the 1930s and he, more than many, knew and understood the themes of sexual oppression and the need for ‘keeping up appearances. He was murdered (allegedly by the authorities) before he saw his play performed. It is not an accident that the play features an all-female cast. The only males referred to are either dead, murderers, perverted priests, cheats

Not least of which, surprisingly given the plot, is humour. Found often in the recollections of Poncia (finely portrayed by Chrissie Cre-

more), the gossipy maid who has a heart full of bitterness and yet still retains some kindness. She has lived a hard life but in the telling of her ex-

ploits we find bawdy humour and an ability to laugh at life. So if you come away from this play thinking in the modern idiom ‘What the Heck Just Happened?’ their job is done. One thing is for sure you will have laughed and you will have cried, and lots in between. Isn’t that what the best of theatre is about? The Indalo Players are happy to announce they will be giving proceeds from the performances to Asprodalba and PAWS. Curtain up is at 8pm. Mojacar Cancer Support BBQ was well attended MANY people contributed to the culinary feast that was available THE annual MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support Charity) BBQ fundraiser was held on September 30 at the home of Maggi Lake in Bedar. Live music was provided by local luminaries Lady Ellen, Tony Justice, Dennis Danzelman, Clive Bowley and Moz Morris as the DJ. Many people contributed to the culinary feast. Talented chefs used their camp stoves to prepare the wonderful BBQ and expert bakers provided a tasty selection of desserts. Maggi Lake deserves special kudos for not only providing the venue, but also for orchestrating an event attended by more than 100 people. Many stayed past one in the morning to continue dancing to the music. The event raised €720 for MACS. MACS has charity shops in Mojácar, Turre, Albox and Huecal Overa. Mojacar: one of Spain’s beautiful villages

Fairy tales for the smallest

AT the last meeting of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of Spain Association’ an agreement was reached to celebrate the Most Beautiful Villages. The event took place in all the chosen municipalities on October 1 and consisted of an official event, a reading of a manifesto, and the raising of the association flag at the town hall. Participants in Mojacar were able to enjoy a free guided tour of the old town. In addition, as of November, ONCE (The Spanish equivalent of the RNIB) will begin a series of lottery tickets with images of ‘the most beautiful villages of Spain’ which will go on sale every Sunday. Through publicity in newspapers, exhibitions, workshops and via their website and social networks, the association hopes to promote the beauty of the most beautiful towns (with less than 15,000 inhabitants) in Spain and, thereby encourage more visitors. Mojacar has already been visited by hundreds of people who were motivated to travel by these campaigns. Also groups of people from other villages in the association such as Lastres or Morella, have visited or are planning to visit soon staying in Mojacar hotels.

The British pensioners who had house demolished have now been burgled WHOEVER undertook the burglary must have climbed over one of their fences and somehow pacified their three dogs By John Smith OVER the years, EWN has run a number of reports about the trials and tribulations encountered by Helen and Len Prior who, having lost their house eight years ago without any compensation, have tried to get on with their lives but have now been burgled and lost almost everything. Ironically, the couple had been attending a fundraiser for the AUAN (the charity that is struggling to have ‘illegal’ houses legalised) with former Bond girl Valerie Leon and when they returned to their home in the campo in Vera they discovered that they had been the victims of a well-planned burglary. It appeared that whoever undertook the burglary must have climbed over one of their fences and somehow pacified their three dogs, one of which is a very large and boisterous Alsatian/Husky cross who has been

traumatised since the events of that day. With three children and six grandchildren, Helen had received a lot of beautiful jewellery as presents over the years and anything of value was stolen, including a very unusual Victorian gold frog which had probably graced an Albert watch chain at one time. Luckily everything had been photographed and they still have access to the pictures which have been passed to the police. Len had just purchased a new laptop computer and that, together with their old laptop have gone as well as everything else that was portable and of value. The only things that hadn’t been touched were furniture. The thieves took the keys to Helen’s car which was in the driveway and although the keys are still missing, they obviously couldn’t start the car which was left with a television from the lounge in the back. Natural-

ly, they have now had to have the car towed away so that new locks and ignition can be fixed. Apart from the trauma of losing so much that was irreplaceable such as photographs on the computer, legal documents and heirloom jewellery, the couple was also quite shaken to find a hand rake in the kitchen and a kitchen knife in the garden which suggests that the thief or thieves were prepared to be violent if discovered. All in all a very unpleasant experience especially as when breaking out of the gates, the thieves allowed the dogs to just run off with the risk of accident. The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities but if anybody has information that might assist, especially if the gold frog is offered for sale, please do let us know at Euro Weekly News and we will be happy to pass the information on.

Line Dancers celebrate 7th THE group enjoyed a sumptuous buffet prepared by bar chefs By Richard B Tolman MEMBERS of Eleanor and Gilly’s Monday afternoon Line Dance class celebrated their 7th birthday recently at Oliver’s Bar, Albox. The theme for this year’s party was sports and pastimes. And participants did not disappoint: there were cyclists, footballers, wine addicts, rock ‘n’ roll dancers, walkers and more. The class members took part in a parade to dis-

play their creations. This was judged by bar owner Ryan Oliver. Three of the class members were awarded prizes. First was Sue Finchin, second was Margaret Tapp and third place went to Maureen Thompson. The winners received bottles of cava and wine. In addition, all dances throughout the afternoon were set to music that represented a sport or a pastime such as ‘Sailing By’ (the famous theme tune to the weather forecast on BBC Ra-

dio 4) and ‘Something in the Water’ (Fishing). In total 15 sports or pastimes were represented in the music performed to by class members. There was even a special egg and spoon competition which meant that a version of the Line Dance ‘Lemon Tree’ had to be performed to the music ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’! There was also a raffle as the group continues to support FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) for another year. As

British expatriates donate hundreds of kilos of food BOXES will be placed in several strategic areas for collection By Maria José Fernandez BRITISH expats from the Los Llanos del Peral church community have donated this week hundreds of kilos of non-perishable food collected during their ‘harvesting annual mass service.’ In keeping with tradition, the celebration of this event which is held every year registered a great level of participation. More than 50 people participated in the ‘harvesting’ donating all sorts of foods for the poorest families of the town which were then delivered at the Zurgena Town Council which was in charge of delivering the products through the Social Service Department. “This way, the food will be distributed according to the list of those who are at risk of poverty according to criteria established by Social Services Department,” said Jim Simpson, councillor at the Zurgena Town Hall. Together with Simpson, the British expats were received by the mayor, Luis Diaz who expressed his most sincere gratitude for the gesture and emphasised that these initiatives are a step forward in the integration of the

Sporting town improves facilities for residents LAS VENTAS sports complex has been given some muchneeded tender loving care by the Albox Council to improve facilities for local residents. Recent heavy storms and strong winds had badly damaged the roof of the indoor sports pavilion at the complex, meaning it could not be used during wet weather due to multiple leaks. A budget of more than €8,000 was provided by the council for the work, which is being closely supervised by Sports councillor Mario Torregrosa and Mayor Rogelio

After removing the layer of roofing felt and replacing it the roof will be resealed, meaning bad weather should not stop locals playing indoor football and basketball or joining exercise classes or other sports activities this winter. “The Las Ventas municipal sports pavilion is one of the sports facilities Albox residents use the most, meaning this urgent work couldn’t be left waiting with winter on the way. The Albox pavilion is once again in optimal condition for its hundreds of users,” Torregrosa ex-

plained. The complex’s outdoor football pitch is also in for more love thanks to a new improved maintenance contract. Whereas in the past the pitch only had thorough maintenance work done once a year, the new €1,300 per annum contract includes six-monthly work and regular care for the artificial grass. HAVING been woken by heavy rain in the middle of the night for the third night in a row, it made me think: ‘How many readers have ensured that as much of the rain as possible has been saved for future use by the plants in their gardens?’ I suspect not all, so I will cover this topic as, looking out of my window, low mists and drizzle block out the view of the mountains and suggest that there will be no gardening today.

BOOK: Many of the ideas outlined here, and more, are covered in this publication. In looking at the issues involved I will be highlighting some topics covered in more detail in my book ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise gardening.’ Absorbent soil This first issue is obvious but rarely worked at year-on-year. The challenge is to develop soil that will retain rainwater, and irrigated water, around and un-

der the roots of plants without becoming chronically waterlogged.

It is important to ensure that root balls can spread sideways and downwards in loosened soil that creates a growing space so the plant grows to maturity without becoming stunted by physical constraints in hard rock-like soil and limited moisture and nutrients. The easiest and cheapest soil additives are your home produced composts and well-rotted animal manures; especially goat, sheep, horse and naturally reared poultry. Mulching to prevent reevaporation Do all you can to prevent evaporation from the surface of the soil by covering with non-absorbent materials such

as stone chippings, ground volcanic ash, almond shells etc: Some 35 practical forms of mulching are described in the book. Ground cover and shade Mulching with materials can be enhanced by allowing evergreen and deciduous plants to spread and hug the ground so as to provide continuous shade. Storing rain water Install guttering and water barrels or a large storage tank like many houses had in Spain before the expat phenomenon and town water-systems. Preventing losses to surrounding properties Surround your property with at least a single building

block wall to prevent rain water running into adjacent properties. With well-prepared soil, any floods will drain away quickly. Moving it to where needed Design the network and slopes of paths and terraces so that rainwater is directed to where it is most required, including to underground storage tanks. Common DIY pitfalls and how to avoid them AS it starts to cool down at last, autumn is a good time to try to tackle niggling jobs about the house. Yet DIY can be full of pitfalls for the inexperienced, and mistakes can be both expensive and time consuming to solve. Here are the most common problems amateurs stumble across and how to avoid them.

1. Make sure you have a spirit level ready Simple tasks like putting a shelf up seem like a five minute job, yet time saved by skipping the levelling could later mean ornaments and books fall over or slide straight off. The extra minute it takes to establish a level edge and pencil a guideline to work by is definitely worth it. 2. Use primers Watermarks can be a nightmare to conceal, and no matter how many coats you use, painting over stains with water-based emulsions won’t help. First apply an oil-based primer to seal it, and then paint over the top as normal. 3. Think practically Sudden ideas are wonderful, but it’s always worth stopping to

consider whether the result will be practical in the future. Panelling bathroom walls round baths and toilets, for example, gives an attractive, clean finish but may well cause problems in the future when inevitable leaks occur and pipes need to be reached unless removable panels or concealed doors were included in the planning stage. 4. Quick fixes are not the answer After wet weather, wooden doors tend to swell and get stuck in their frames. The problem can be quickly fixed by planing the wood, but unless it is then painted over and sealed it will just swell again the next time it rains. 5. Don’t scrimp on essentials Buying expensive paintbrushes for just one job is pointless, but stay away from budget brushes as they have fewer bristles, leading to an untidy finish, and moult much more than mid-range brushes. 6. Protect edges Masking tape and old sheets are your friends and the five minutes it will take to put them

in place will save hours of cleaning up stains afterwards. 7. Don’t scrimp on materials It’s always better to have a little paint left over than to end up with patches that later show you had to stop halfway

through and rush to the shop for more. This goes the opposite way when cutting materials, be they wood, wallpaper or carpets. Check every measurement before making cuts and remember less is more, you can always cut off a little extra but if

you cut too short you will end up wasting time and money. 8. Prepare properly Always vacuum thoroughly before painting or any dust left floating about is bound to stick to the wet paint and ruin your efforts.

The dog has the instinct of the hunt, which means a chase and a kill. Sadly, often the dog is killed by a car. The first instinct is maternal and others cover such areas as survival, hunting, guarding, the pack and self-preservation. Self-preservation makes wild dogs furtive and afraid of the unfamiliar, which is of no use to man. This type of

nervousness in the domestic dog is one of the common causes of problems in present-day dogs. Nearly all cases where children have been attacked by dogs and owners have been bitten by their own dog arise from nervousness. The dog is afraid it is going to be hurt and attacks first; fear, fright and bite. The instinct of self-preservation has been weakened by breeding from bold dogs rather than nervous ones, but has never been entirely removed.

Animals in Spain to get a better life GOVERNMENT has agreed to adhere to European Union pet protection guidelines DOCKED tails and clipped ears are set to become a thing of the past for dogs in Spain as the Council of Ministers has agreed to adhere to European Union pet protection guidelines. The guidelines, put in place by the EU in 1987, forbid all surgical interventions with aesthetic intentions including tail docking, ear clipping, cutting of vocal chords and removal of claws or teeth, the Ministry for Agriculture and the Environment has explained. Having received the government’s approval, the

Environmental Ministry said last week that the text will now be sent to the General Courts for approval, which if given will make Spain the 18th EU member state to adopt the guidelines. Use of pets for publicity and entertainment is also limited amongst the measures to ensure their health and wellbeing are not endangered. The National Association for Animal Defence (ANDA) has expressed its satisfaction at the news, explaining it has been asking the government to

adopt the guidelines for more than 10 years. “The text acknowledges the fact that pets have a special relationship with humans. Also it underlines their contribution to quality of life and their value for society,” the animal rights group stated. Other measures contemplated in the guidelines include regulations on gifting pets to under 16s which will ensure parental approval is obtained beforehand, along with regulations on how councils deal with strays to ensure they do not suffer.

New builds on the rise NEW building licence applications have increased again this year, the Ministry of Public Works and Development has reported. Data released by the ministry has revealed that over the first seven months of this year a total of 28,870 applications were made for new building works, 70 per cent of them for blocks of flats. The upward trend, which began last year, therefore continues and if the average monthly figures continue to the end of the year an estimated 46,000 licences will have been issued.

A FRIEND of mine invited me to join him for a glass of wine at his place. Nothing unusual about that; it happens every day, but this was no ordinary wine or place. Oh, did I mention that my friend is seriously wealthy and when I arrived at his place he had a bottle of Vega Sicilia ready to serve in a crystal glass. He’s a true connoisseur of wine and of all high-quality things and he explained why we were having a bottle of Ribera del Duero’s finest; it was a ‘thank you’ for providing him with the luxury villa he wanted but didn’t think he could find.

Well, the villa was designed and built by one of my top architect friends and I had controlled the building process to ensure quality throughout and yes, it was a Jaw-Dropping Design in a Wow-Factor Location, with state of the art fittings. He explained that Vegas Sicilia, founded in 1864, rivals the best wines in the world such as the great Bordeaux and Burgundy wines. However, there’s a catch; due to low production and high demand the wine isn’t readily available to buy and that’s a problem. But that’s not the point; my friend is one of many wealthy foreign buyers who are having a property built or are buying existing villas. In fact, I was stunned when I read an article which confirmed that 75 per cent of all luxury property in Spain is

being bought by foreigners. That’s a massive percentage and great news for owners, developers, architects and everyone offering high-quality services and products in real estate, but there’s a catch. Similar to the shortage of Vegas Sicilia wine, there is a small supply of readily available wow-factor locations in Spain and that is a problem. With 75 per cent of all luxury properties being bought by foreigners, there is a concern that we could run out of suitable properties to meet the growing demand. However, unlike the lack of availability of one of Spain’s finest wines, the good news is that the construction industry can respond to the demand by building many more luxury properties in top locations throughout Spain.

UK MPs claim €5.8m in motoring expenses TAXPAYERS in the UK were shocked to discover that MPs’ expense claims for tolls, parking and the London Congestion Charge amount to over £4 million (€5.4m). The Auto Express website says UK MPs have claimed nearly £4.3m (€5.8m) in motoring expenses in three years. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), says that £1.4m (€1.9m) is claimed each year.

€33.5m worth of cars crashed THE James Bond franchise is renowned for the quality of cars featured and the numbers that are destroyed on a regular basis in thrilling chase scenes. According to a recent article in the Mail on Sunday, reports suggest that around £24 million (€33.5 million) out of a total budget of £200 million (€280 million) was spent on cars which appear in the new movie, ‘Spectre,’ which is due for release in Spain on November 6. As usual, Aston Martin have a very good presence in this film and no less than seven specially designed DB10 sports cars were destroyed in a series of high speed chases within Rome and Vatican City. Three more DB10s, all with the ejector seat seen in the DB5 in Goldfinger, were also used. Everyone understands the concept of product placement in modern films but this is the ultimate, with additional appearances from a Land Rover

Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club VERY friendly players with varied levels of experience and ability CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club started its life partway up the mountainside of the Sierra Cabrera. The first foundations were in place in 1982/83 and the bowls greens were ready by 1984, with the club being formally registered in 1986, when it became affiliated to the Spanish National Federation of Bowls. Many happy years were spent there but in 2000 it was time for a change and the club moved to where it is now; Al Andalus Gardens on the outskirts of Turre. The building work had to start all over again with the first green and clubhouse being built in 2001 followed by the second green in 2002. We are the only grass green bowling club in the south of Spain. We pride ourselves as being one of the best bowling clubs in the area as we not only bowl competitively but socially too. Some of our bowlers come to club mornings to meet friends, get gentle exercise and play a sport that they enjoy. Other members like to be a bit more competitive and use club mornings as practice sessions for competitions they may have entered. Whilst the course is still undergoing lots of cosmetic reworking it was, in the main, very playable. The team of Mike and Karyn Esposito, Richie Strachen and Zeta Denyer easily won the main event with 95 points, Mike also took the Mens Individual prize with a nett 39, whilst Zeta was runner-up in the Ladies competition, losing on countback to Chrissie Dow, both on nett 36.
