Happiness Race brings fun and colour to Torrox streets HUNDREDS of participants get plastered raising cash for charity TORROX was awash with colour as it celebrated the ‘Happiness Race’, an event in which the runners are pelted with powdered paint, all for a good cause. The non-competitive fivekilometre race took place across the old centre’s streets, having its departure and ending point at Plaza de la Constitucion, famous for the 1,100 colourful umbrellas suspended above the streets to shade the cheering crowds. This race is an international initiative, which has already taken place in more than 200 cities across the world, involving whole families and groups of friends who each make a donation to participate. It is estimated that more than €500 was collected during the day, from the more than 750 runners, with

promises of more funds to come. All proceeds will be donated to a social project, focused on sustainability and environmental respect, which will be chosen based on participants’ suggestions.

Migrants found A DINGHY with seven Moroccan migrants on board was found by Guardia Civil off Nerja coasts and taken to the Velez-Malaga port. Sources at the 112 emergency services informed the

Axarquia transport fair THIS event is establishing itself more and more in the region By Maria José Fernandez VELEZ-MALAGA is to be home to one of the most important events for the transport sector. Transport councillor, Marcelino Mendez-Trelles and Head of the Axarquia Transport Association (ATAX) Antonio Fernandez, presented the event which is scheduled to take place on October 2, 3 and 4 at the town’s fairgrounds. The sixth edition of the Axarquia Transport Fair in Velez-Malaga will gather close to 30 stands to represent several automobile brands including Mercedes, Scania, Opel, Renault, Nissan and Chevrolet as well as other products related to the engines’ world. “This is a fair which is establishing itself more and more in our region and becoming a must-attend event for the transport sector,” said Mr Mendez Trelles who explained that the event will be kicked off at 12pm. With a population of 5.5 million voters, the election held on September 27 could have far-reaching effects on Spain itself. The pro-independence parties have won 72 seats out of 135 and although they only received 1.9 million votes out of the four million cast, they consider that this gives them a mandate to declare independence from Spain. THE Junta de Andalucia regional government is currently working together with the Velez-Malaga Council to finalise the project that they hope will turn the Torre del Mar district into an Autonomous Local Entity (ELA). One of the biggest obstacles encountered is a national regulation, which would prevent Torre del Mar from acquiring judicial autonomy. However, authorities have said that the recognition of the town for historical reasons would solve this issue. “We have started working on the project and we are optimistic that Torre del Mar will be able to achieve the category of ELA,” Andalucian Regional Government Delegate in Malaga, Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, told Spanish newspaper, La Opinion de Malaga. “Achieving the decentralisation from the local administration is what we have been fighting for,” said the head of the independent group of Torre del Mar, Jesus Atencia,

Campaigning for animal adoption CHARITY event on October 4 By Maria José Fernandez RINCON de la Victoria Council is for the first time running an awareness and adoption campaign called ‘Rincon Animal Heart’ in conjuction with the APARAVI animal rights group. The event will put the spotlight on the efforts of the municipal animal shelter, which has been operational for 17 years, as well as support the work of the volunteers and members of the organisation, who currently look after more than 50 animals. A charity event will be held on October 4 on Rincon de la Victoria seafront

(near the town hall) from 11am to 3pm, coinciding with the International Animal Day. More than 5,000 leaflets have been printed for the occasion and visitors will be able to learn about the adoption process and other matters.

Dead man found in Almuñecar LOCAL POLICE and firefighters from Almuñecar have found a body in an apartment in the Abencerrajes residential complex (Marina del Este). The discovery was made after neighbours reported a strong odour coming from within the property, according to police sources. The dead man has been identified as JDSE; he was 49 years old and came from Pitres (Granada).

FLOODING ISSUES: Causing problems for the seafront.

Seafront flooding THE Almuñecar Council has requested that the Junta de Andalucia regional government s pe e d up the a uthoris a tion process and renovate the sewerage system in the La Herradura seafront. The news was announced by Deputy Mayor, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, who explained it has been more than six months since a request was sent to the Environment Regional Department to c a rry out a proje c t va lue d a t more than €2.1 million. causing the complete saturation of sewerage systems and preventing residents from enjoying one of the most important public spaces of the town.

THREE people were rescued off the Almuñecar coast as the boat they were travelling on broke down. A witness, using a telescope on Cantarrijan beach in Almuñecar alerted the 112 emergency services on Saturday, September 26 at around 8.15pm, claiming he had seen a small ‘zodiac’ boat throwing several red distress flares out at sea. All passengers were rescued and were in good health and the boat was taken to La Herradura beach.

You may be in with a chance to get some of your hard-earned cash back as the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has found 147 dealerships guilty of overcharging buyers. The dealerships, selling wellknown brands including Opel, Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Land Rover, Citroen, Mitsubishi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ford, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Volvo and Lexus vehicles, have been fined more than €170 million by the CNMC but have kept quiet about the fact that buyers may be eligible to claim damages. Free school supplies for pupils in poverty FINANCIALLY less fortunate children in Motril will be able to enjoy new school supplies, regardless of their personal situation. At least 250 students in Motril will receive a bag of supplies thanks to the campaign, ‘Your Star Supplies,’ launched by the bank, La Caixa, and managed by the council through the Social Services and Education Departments. The goal is to ease access to education for all children at risk of

poverty due to the situation of their families. Deputy Mayor, Alicia Crespo, and other council representatives, presented the edition and explained that the project will have a total budget of €150,000 for the whole of Andalucia. The workers at the Social Department of the town will choose the recipients according to their situation. and they will receive notepads, pencils, rubbers, glues and pencil cases.

Police closely watching fields after fruit thefts POLICE in Motril are carrying out a surveillance campaign in the countryside to reduce thefts from fields. “We know that, frequently, our field workers suffer the theft of their fruit,” said Citizens’ Safety Councillor Maria Angeles Escamez, who continued: “This is why the National and Local Police are performing surveillance with the goal of preventing thefts.”

Last week, three different operations were launched which are said to have prevented the theft of sub-tropical fruits in several fields. On Friday (September 25), police seized products from a man inside a vehicle, after he was unable to prove their origin and on Sunday four people were found with tools which may have been used to commit crimes.

Environmental awareness for Motril schoolchildren PROGRAMME aims to educate pupils of the nature around them

expected to participate. Deputy Mayor, Antonio Escamez, announced that, thanks to this initiative, the schoolchildren will be able to get to know the different natural spaces of Motril, its diversity and the ecological trace that each human leaves on the planet. “We hope that this programme, which is based on classroom ex-

planation and outdoor activities, will be useful for the education community to integrate environmental knowledge into the children’s syllabus,” said Mr Escamez. Children will also go on excursions to natural sites such as the Suarez wetlands, with guided routes to the new botanical garden facilities.

Former Queen meets charity FORMER Queen Sofia received representatives of the Disabled Association, Amirax, from Rincon de la Victoria, led by head, Mari Angeles Rodriguez, during her visit to Malaga for the third International Investigation and Innovation on Neurodegenerative Illnesses Conference. “During five years we have held fluid communications with the royal household and have been inviting her since 2010 to our centre, an invitation that became more important when we were finally able to inaugurate our very own Day-Care Centre last spring,” said the head of the association, who continued: “It was then that we were told that the former Queen would receive us on her next visit to Malaga.” She went on to say that, even though they would have liked the former Queen to have visited the centre, they were thrilled with the gesture, one that will boost the morale of all those members of staff and patients who fight every day for a more integrated life for people with disabilities. The former Queen is said to have received the representatives kindly and to have been touched by their work, especially when introduced to one of the users of the home, who suffers from Cerebral palsy.

Suspect arrested for religious hate crime STONES were allegedly thrown at alcove housing effigy By Maria Jose Fernandez A MOROCCAN man was arrested in Rincon de la Victoria after he allegedly threw stones at the alcove, which houses the Virgen del Carmen effigy. The man was identified as AB, a 27-year-old with no previous criminal record, who was caught red-handed at the scene after an off-duty police officer reported that he had witnessed the events at around 11am. Several police patrols attended the scene and took the man into custody for a religious hate crime. According to the witness, the man hit the protective glass several times with a large stone and then screamed; “Allah is great.” Damages have been valued at around €1,000 and the man is currently in custody and waiting to appear before a judge.

Commerce: immaterial patrimony of humanity THE commerce sector in Rincon de la Victoria may soon receive a boost in the shape of a title bestowed by Unesco. The council announced on Friday (September 25) that the initiative presented by the Malaga Commerce Federation (FECOMA), to have the Traditional Mediterranean Commerce concept declared by UNESCO as Immaterial Cultural Patrimony of Humanity, will be supported by the local governing team. This way, Rincon de la Victoria will become the second town, after Malaga city, to approve the proposal, aimed at boosting local commerce activities and a making the local economy more dynamic. Head of FECOMA, Enrique Gil, thanked Rincon de la Victoria Council for their support and requested the same from other institutions, associations and private citizens, saying: “This is a feature which would add more cultural and touristic interest for the sector which provides more development to the town and will create the largest number of employment opportunities in the province.”

ARLIER this year, Chelsea Greene left home in Alhaurin El Grande, Malaga, and embarked on a journey to the UK to a nationwide audition for a new girlband. Office Girls UK was being promoted by Ellis Rich, OBE, the former boss of Simon Cowell, who previously owned the biggest music publisher company in Europe. His partner, Marvin Howell, had promoted the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Blondie, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, and Enrique Iglesias, so she knew this could be her big opportunity. The management stated that Chelsea was great but they could not

Chelsea was very disappointed; nevertheless, when she returned to Spain, she was offered a leading role in a musical revue with Medplaya Hotels in Spain, which she accepted. Fate soon took a hand, however, when Chelsea then received an email from Rich and Howell telling her that one of the girls had left and could she fly back immediately to the UK and replace her. She was released from her commitments in Spain and made her way back to the UK to await her destiny. Within two days of joining the Office Girls UK, they were performing at the YouTube Con-

President of the Port Authorities in Motril, Francisco Alvarez de la Chica, has denounced the poor conditions of the customs service at the port, which depends on central government, as he claims the opening hours are too short and its functioning is, in his words, “from the 19th century.” He went on to say that the functioning of this service is affect-

ing goods transport and creating a disadvantage for the Motril port in comparison to those in Malaga and Almeria. “We do not think they understand that this port is not what it used to be: Now there are regular routes from North Africa,” said Alvarez de la Chica, who explained that the customs service is only operational from Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm and that the service is not available on afternoons or weekends, while in Almeria they are open, even on Saturday mornings.

“We need the timetable to be extended,” he said and added that a larger number of staff members are also needed now due to the increased number of passengers. The Port Authority head explained that both transport lorries and normal vehicles must go through random visual checks, which are to be carried out at the customs area. If there is no inspector, these vehicles must remain immobilised inside the port facilities and they cannot be put on a boat or moved to any other ports once they are inside.

“Sometimes we have to make the person wait and bring an inspector from Malaga or Almeria,” said Alvarez de la Chica. In a survey, users of the port agreed that the customs service could be improved by facilitating paperwork, speaking other languages and making the entrance easier. He has also requested that central government provide medical inspectors. During the Ebola scare a few months ago, these inspectors had to be brought from other ports.

Raid nets cigarettes SMUGGLED goods allegedly found at town centre newsstand around 9.30am when officers approached the stand and found the smuggled goods, valued at around €2,280.

New access road finally approved GREEN LIGHT given for construction to begin By Maria Jose Fernandez MALAGA Provincial Council has awarded the tender for the construction works for the Parque Tecnoalimentario in El Trapiche (Velez-Malaga) new access road at a cost of €645,996. The project, which is expected to begin in a just a few weeks, will be carried out by local company Construcciones Maygar SL. Work is expected to be completed in around six months.

The project was given the green light after the Junta de Andalucia regional government unblocked it as a result of a positive report by the Regional Environment Department. Works will include the improvement and adaptation of the MA-3113 road that gives access to this industrial park. In addition, work will also be carried out to extend the bridge, which is currently located between the Carretera de Arco and the park.

Son calls police on father A 54-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in Motril after allegedly attacking his partner. The authorities were alerted by the couple’s son, who is of legal age. On arrival, police officers saw several broken objects on the floor and found the woman in a state of high anxiety, displaying signs that she

may have been attacked, according to police sources. The alleged attacker was showing signs of being intoxicated and continued to threaten his wife in front of officers. He was taken into custody and the victim remained under the protection of her son.

All working side by side THE Rincon de la Victoria Council held a meeting with several charitable associations from the town, with the goal of optimising the current resources available to them, according to Social Services councillor Yolanda Florido. This first meeting is included in the electoral commitments made by the governing team before the May elections.

“It is important to create a network amongst the different associations,” said Mayor Encarnación Anaya, who added: “After this meeting, we have agreed on the creation of a service database, with initiatives to coordinate lines of action, propose ideas, exchange impressions and establish a relation between all the entities to offer a better service to the population.”

Man on trial for attempted kidnap GRANADA Court’s prosecutor’s office has requested three years and three months in jail for a man who allegedly attempted to kidnap a four-yearold girl in Motril. The man is also said to have attacked the girl’s father when he tried to stop him. The events took place in October 2013 at around 8.45am, when the accused, Mohamed MC, waited at the entrance to a school in Avenida Juilo Moreno. He reportedly grabbed the girl by the arm and allegedly punched the girl’s father in the mouth, knocked him to the ground and then kicked him. According to the prosecutor’s office, the man could have been going through a schizophrenic episode, which may have compromised his cognitive skills and will.

Accident case to be appealed once more by family YOUNG motorcyclist died after incident in 2011 By Maria Jose Fernandez THE court of Velez-Malaga has ordered the dismissal of the case in which a prosecutor identified as GMA was being investigated in connection with a traffic accident where a young motorcyclist died in June 2011. In the document, the judge confirms that after the investigation it was not possible to attribute the death of the man to GMA. The judge’s decision was made after the defence demonstrated that the accused and his wife, who was also being investigated, were staying overnight in a hotel in Melilla between June 14 and 21. THE Guardia Civil arrested four men for defrauding elderly residents in Calpe, Alicante. The Guardia were informed of the four men who posed as gas technicians and wore official gas company uniforms after they had visited an elderly German couple in Calpe, who did not speak much Castellano, and convinced them that their gas installation should be checked. They then falsely told the couple they must change a number of components in order to comply with regulations and gave them a €660 bill which was paid in full by the couple. Police found although the installation was actually made correctly there was in fact no need for it. After providing police with a description of the men who were said to be aged between 40-56 and of Spanish nationality, the Guardia picked them up in the street, still wearing the gas company uniforms. The four have already appeared in court charged with fraud.

Town’s residents can check up on councillors online WEBSITE shows property and bank account details By Maria Jose Fernandez WITH the beginning of its new term in office, the Rincon de la Victoria Council has become one of the first which, on its official website, publishes a declaration of all the income and property owned by its 21 councillors. This fulfils one of the commitments, signed before a notary, of the governing team, which is made up of PSOE, Ahora Rincon, IU and PA. According to the information published in the Spanish daily SUR; through a new specially designed section entitled ‘Transparency,’ and which is accessible at: www.rincondelavictoria.es, it will now be possible to check how much money councillors currently have in their bank

accounts and what properties, cars and other belongings they own. The Urbanism Councillor, Antonio Sanchez, has the most noteworthy results, with €114,338, apart from three pension schemes and two life insurance plans, amongst others. On the other side of the spectrum, there is Elena Aguilar (Ciudadanos) with only €20 in her bank account and the €500 of Javier Lopez, who is in charge of the Tourism Department. The other 20 councillors together do not reach the amount declared by Antonio Sanchez. The website also allows users to check up on the councillors’ education history; it appears that only four of the 21 have been to university.

I had taken up a sales post with the Australian-based Red Telephone Company, which was very much performance related. The basic concept was that during breakfast everyone at the table would be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed; fail. Of fresh mind, we sales personnel could bond, brainstorm, learn from others then hit the ground running. That was the idea. Sales seminars and such get-togethers do pay dividends. One of the failings of the business community is that business owners work in isolation. Winging it, there is no one to turn to for advice except gestors, solicitors, suppliers and, equally inept, the family. As a consequence the SME manager is going to get it wrong more often than is the company man. He has

Having spent some eight years in their country, I think I can attest to their arrogance and hypocrisy. It came as no surprise to me that they completely blanked refugees fleeing from persecution in neighbouring countries; heaven forbid they allow their privileged existence to be overrun by smelly peasants! It was also completely typical that they instead offered to pay for 200 new mosques to be erected in Germany. They also lie about or suppress anything that may be detrimental to their superior existence. When I was in the country, there was an attempted coup by one of the royal family. Not long after, they allegedly sent in fighter planes and bombed it out of existence. On another occasion there was an attempted takeover of Mecca by a rival religious group. This was put down to a handful of zealots. In fact, it took two weeks to quell, and a doctor friend of mine told me that his military hospital had treated at least 600 gunshot victims. Despite demanding mosques to be built everywhere, they would never allow anything even vaguely resembling a church to be built in their kingdom. If they say some 700 souls perished this week on the road to Medina, you can guarantee the figure was probably double. The madness of Safety campaign on scooter drivers wearing of seatbelts

BELT UP: The use of a seatbelt is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle. AS reported in last week’s the Euro Weekly News, the Guardia Civil traffic department was carrying out intensified checks on the wearing of seatbelts and child restraints in cars as part of a safety campaign. As a result, more than 3,000 people in vehicles were caught not wearing a seatbelt. During the seven-day campaign, there were 2,830 adults and 206 children under the age of 12 not wearing seatbelts. Of these adults, 1,766 were drivers with the remaining 1,064 being passengers in vehicles; 649 were sitting in the front and 415 in the rear seats. The campaign coincided with the re-

turn to school with the aim of reducing risk to children as well as adults by raising awareness of the need to wear safety belts. The use of a seatbelt is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle in both front and rear seats. There must be no more passengers in a vehicle than the number of seatbelts. Children less than 1.5m in height must use the appropriate restraints for their height and, in some cases, weight and children under the age of 12 cannot travel in the front seat, unless using properly fitted and approved restraints. The only exception is if the child is taller than 135cm, in which case they can use the normal seatbelt.

Can Spain collect IBI on illegal house? We have been in our property since 2005 on an urbanisation of 25 villas. At the time we were issued one common ‘catastral’ number so we all have the same number. None of us has ever paid IBI tax. I’VE been driving for about 50 years and think I’m a reasonable driver, but there is a collection of road users that are a lot more confident in my driving than I am! I am, of course, referring to the motor scooter driver. What is it with you lot? Driving through traffic like a winter Olympian in the down-hill slalom will only ensure the Paralympics may be the only thing you can enter... that is of course if they can locate your head after the accident. Pedestrians on zebra crossings are only there for target practice and what’s with the shopping piled between you and the handle bars, or the pets? I’ve unfortunately seen a few scooter v car accidents and the scooter driver never comes off better than the car driver or the car. It’s a totally lose-lose situation. Of course none of you reading this that ride scooters do any of this… so this article is only for all the others!

I HAVE just returned from a family holiday in Benidorm (we go there about twice a year and have been for the last six to seven years) and this time it was a family holiday to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary (God, the train robbers only got 30 years. Joking aside, I wouldn’t have changed a moment). Whilst there, I had the opportunity to read Leapy Lee’s article in the free Euro Weekly and just had to comment on it. To quote my wife it was the same views I am always ranting on about. We live in Sussex so we get a lot of migrant movement on the south coast. That is, when Operation Stack is not bringing the whole of Kent and Sussex to gridlock. Everything you highlighted like carrying on through Gandia to the nearest airport and on the plane to Syria is brilliant. At Calais and the Channel Tunnel the worst the migrants can expect is to be caught and returned to the port entrance to be released outside the gate so they can try again the next night, but the poor lorry drivers get fined £2,000 per stowaway. I feel so strongly I could carry on ranting all day. Numerous people I know feel the same, they are not refugees as such unless refugees can travel across Europe with wads of Euros in their back pockets. Terry Marchant, (By email)

Jeremy Corbyn was elected Labour leader by a majority of 60 per cent. He has held 100 meetings in the UK and his polices are very popular. Renationalise the railways and utilities. End austerity. Build decent housing for our young people. If your brand of journalism stopped calling names and started some thoughtful analysis, journalists might again become trusted in what they write. The country is torn apart by rival factions as NATO invaded Iraq, Afghanistan and possibly soon Syria. It is not a failure of understanding as some claim; it appears to be the base treachery of Europe for which there will doubtless be a high price to pay.

THE Rugby World Cup is under way and it is refreshing to see a game that still embodies the real meaning of sportsmanship. All of the paper that we purchase - and if you think of the amount needed to produce six editions every week of every year - is ecologically sound, coming from reclaimed sources which is the reason that the background is not pure white. That’s why we can say quite clearly that in the newspaper business, white isn’t right and if you see any publication printed on pure white paper, then you need to consider whether they are interested in the environment or if they just have money to burn (which also causes pollution). The fact is that the use of paper in all forms does cause an enormous strain on our dwindling resources and unless you are one of those companies that plants three trees for every one cut down, the logical and indeed obvious thing to do is to re-use pulped paper. It may not be quite as pretty to look at, but it certainly gives us a sense of doing our bit for the world and perhaps allows the rainforests to remain just a little longer.

One of the most common problems I encounter with new clients is that often they are misguided about food, confused about healthy food options, how much they should eat, and most importantly how often they should

eat. The truth of the matter is, if you are expecting your body to perform and function like a finely tuned machine, you have to treat it like one. How many meals in a day? You should be aiming for five/six,

broken down into three meals and two/three snacks. Do you skip breakfast? One of the biggest and most common mistakes, as breakfast is probably the most important meal of the day. Are you eating a heavy meal late in the evening? Where possible, you should aim to eat your main meal at lunchtime and have a lighter meal in the evening. You should avoid going to bed with a full stomach. Your metabolism naturally slows down as you rest. You need at least two to three hours to digest your food before sleep. It is never too late to improve your eating habits if you find you are not losing weight with your current routine, it is maybe time to look at other methods.

FOOD Secrets. Dog foods do vary in quality. So do the companies that make the foods. To some companies, quality is only a word. To others, it’s a way of life. Ultimately, the quality of a dog food is best measured by your dog; how your dog performs on the food, how he looks, feels and acts are the best measures of

the quality of any food. At least 80 per cent of my clients that report behavioural problems find that a change of food changes the unwanted behaviour. No matter what a food company claims, unless your dog has bright eyes, silky hair, supple skin and is not overweight, then the food is not right for him. Not all dogs do well on a particular brand of food; some dogs simply do better than others. Most foods are categorised as ‘Economy,’ ‘Regular,’ ‘Premium,’ ‘Super Premium’ and ‘Performance.’ Regular and Premium foods are not formulated like a Super Premium or Performance food. Dogs have simple stomachs and short digestive tracts for digesting meat. They also lack the saliva enzyme, amylase, which is necessary for pre-digesting

A new season AUTUMN is here and there are a variety of things to keep in mind to make your pet’s seasonal change process much easier. • Autumn is usually the season where rodents seek shelter from the colder temperatures. Keep rodenticides out of reach. • Fleas and ticks usually increase in this period of the year, so it is a good idea to use tick control and check pets frequently. • Some pets get less exercise during the colder months so it is important to adjust their food intake. • Seasonal allergies can come about during autumn. Some of the most common are rhinitis, with symptoms going from sneezing to loud snorting or snoring as well as discharge from your dog’s nose.

AS MUCH as you love your cat, it drives you mad when you spot it sharpening its claws on the settee. Sadly, this is normal behaviour for cats. Along with sharpening their claws, which they need to do, scratching is also a way of marking their territory. After all, they are animals! Telling them off is unlikely to help as they’ll probably just run away and come back when you’re not looking. Luckily, though, there are a few tricks you can try to stop the problem: • Cut their claws: Scratching and marking territory is a social act for young felines, especially on vertical surfaces, plus it fulfils their need to sharpen claws. If they are too long, take them to the vet to have them clipped. • Don’t tell them off: They’re not being naughty, they actually have a physical need to scratch things. Stopping them could even lead to psychological and behavioural problems. • Give them toys and scratching posts: Toys and scratching posts are not only fun, they will also eventually become their go-to place to sharpen their claws. Although every cat is different, this type of item is never amiss at home and is bound to distract your furry friend from the sofa. • Other solutions: Covering sofas with thick material, covers or plastic sheets is a good way to stop their claws getting through to the upholstery.

BIGNONIAS as a family come into their own in the autumn after the first rains have dampened the roots and temperatures have dropped five degrees or more. The exuberant pink flowered Podranea ricasoliana, pink Contesa Sara trumpet vine can be seen climbing over walls, through the upper growth of tall trees, covering dead trees and gazebos and even entire houses if let rip some years ago with no annual pruning except around doorways and windows. This bignonia can also be used for ground cover as an almost entirely pink carpet on a bank or flat ground. In general it will flower until the first frosts and is best given a heavy winter prune each year. Rental prices slowly on the up RENTAL prices in Spain have gone up 4.5 per cent over the last year according to new data from Fotocasa real estate website. Fotocasa reported that the average price per square metre for rentals has reached €7.07 per month. Since they reached their highest levels in May 2007 (€10.12 per square metre per month), rental prices have plummeted all over Spain. Aragon is the region where rental prices had fallen the most (41.7 per cent), followed by Valencia (35.5 per cent), Cantabria (35.4 per cent), Castilla-La Mancha (35.4 per cent), Murcia (30.9 per cent), Asturias (27.8 per cent) and Andalucia (27.6 per cent). Yet now prices are once again on the up, Fotocasa said, with Madrid, Extremadura and Cataluña registering small, steady, increases. The most expensive place to rent is currently the Basque Country (€10.15 per square metre per month) followed by Madrid (€9.69) and Cataluña (€9.39), while Extremadura (€4.64) and Castilla-La Mancha (€4.68) remain the cheapest. Regarding August prices, of a total of 322 towns studied by Fotocasa, 164 registered increases in rent, whereas in another 140 towns they were found to have dropped. Rent remained stable in just 18 of the towns.

In a recent European poll, the consultants found that 27 per cent of more than 150 investors questioned declared Spain to be their preferred investment target due, largely, to the strength of the current recovery balanced against prices which are still far from their previous peak. NEWS that MI5 and anti-terrorism police are monitoring more than 3,000 home-grown jihadists (including teenagers) plotting to attack the UK was met with the usual slagging off from the usual suspects. Shami Chakrabarti, Director of civil rights group, Liberty, said the security services mustn’t be given a blank cheque. Heck, that’s not unlike someone saying I shouldn’t be given a Mayfair mansion. No one’s ever suggested it, and I’ve never asked. Ms Chakrabarti and other doubters/appeasers/apologists have completely lost the plot. They see

Well, Chancellor Merkel, great timing; all those ‘Welcome Refugees’ flags welcoming thousands of young migrant males just as all this is happening and the US military strategy has all but collapsed! Maybe Ms Chakrabarti would feel more at home in somewhere like Saudi Arabia where a young man is facing crucifixion after beheading for attending an anti-government protest when he was just 17?

And finally, some positive news: British police are dropping part of their case involving alleged sex abuse against Sir Cliff Richard. In their pursuit of Cliff Richard, aren’t they simply over-compensating for their failure to bring Savile to justice? The aerial footage of the police raid on Cliff Richard’s home broadcast on BBC was nothing less than a modernday witch hunt. Hopefully, his anticipated comeback tour will help restore his good reputation. Then at least some goodwill may come from such unacceptable police (and media) harassment. Confidence in the British police is falling faster than global markets on one of their gut-churning down days.
