Man jailed for killing his wife A 48-YEAR-OLD man named as Oumar Fofana has admitted in court to killing his wife at their home in Paiporta, Valencia, tragically in front of their 11-year-old son and was subsequently sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for murder. Police intercepted the brutal aggressor as he attempted to flee the home after he had physically assaulted his wife by throwing a kitchen stool at her and then proceeded to stab her repeatedly with a kitchen knife. The man confessed to police in a statement and later in court, doing so in order to prevent his own son having to testify against him. He was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for murder. The victim had previously lodged complaints with the police about her husband for violent behavior towards her, but they were shelved. She had also recently consulted a lawyer to begin divorce proceedings.

Gas prices drop THE price of the butane gas cylinder has been set at 12.76 euros, including taxes, from Tuesday September 15, representing a decrease of 5 per cent compared to 13.42 euros set in the previous bimonthly review. This represents a 27 per cent reduction since the beginning of the year.

Cycle lanes double BENIDORM currently has about 10 kilometres of bike lanes for the estimated 10,000 cyclists that currently choose to cycle around the tourist capital, but now the regional town hall has decided it wants to double that. Mayor of Benidorm Toni Perez has announced plans to connect all of the main parts of the city, which will result in the construction of another nine kilometres of cycle lanes within a year. The move comes after demands from residents and businesses, and the rise in numbers of people preferring to opt for a green, eco-friendly form of transport. One of the main projects is to create a path that links the two main promenades of Poniente and Levante as well as create links from many of the campsites to the old town and centre, allowing tourists easy access as well as introducing a new path that will lead to the

Mountain bike circuit SEVEN cyclists from La Nucia Club participated in the Second Road Trail Race in Callosa d’en Sarria. The race was a qualifier for the National Circuit Mountain Bikes Marathon RFEC (Royal Spanish Cycling Federation). The tough 82-kilometre circuit, which took place on Sunday September 13, included over 2,650 metres of uphill cycling and plenty of technical descents, resulting in only 170 of the 250 participants making it to the finish line. The cyclists from La Nucia, Victor Nucierso Jumilla, François Leliveld, Miguel Olmedo, Javier and Jose Miguel Ivorra and Yamuza Miñana completed the race with Miguel Olmedo coming in at 86th position with a time of five hours 32 minutes and 49 seconds.

Illegal houses to be demolished THE Ministry of Territorial Structuring says it will proceed with the demolition of six townhouses on Tabarca Island, located just off the coast of Alicante. Their construction, they say, contravenes the Coastal Act as they have been built on a protected area and on maritime-terrestrial public domain. The houses were declared illegal in 2003 following a complaint from the Ministry of Environment for violations of the act. However, 11 years later they are still standing. While the tenants should have

left by January 15, 2013, the technical departments say that they have thus far been unable to access the properties. Many owners are also claiming compensation amounting to €1.2 million from the ministry as they claim that they had purchased the houses with municipal licences and have building permits and certificates of occupancy, as well as water and electricity connected. The conflict between Costas and the Generalitat is still ongoing but the judge has sided with Costas and ruled that the houses are illegal.

Arrests made for recent burglaries NATIONAL Police arrest five people for a number of burglaries in the town By Buster Smith NATIONAL Police in Denia, Alicante have arrested five people who are charged with up to three burglaries in the town and the subsequent sale of stolen belongings. The police investigations began in August when they received reports of a robbery at a home where the owner surprised a woman in her bedroom. Various jewellery items,

a laptop, mobile phones, a tablet, cash and other effects were stolen on that occasion. The police managed to identify and arrest a person who sold the stolen jewellery to a jewellery shop located in the city of Denia on September 2, along with the establishment owner who was charged with receiving stolen goods. The following day they detained another person who was accused of collaborating with

the criminals. Finally, two of the alleged perpetrators of the theft were also apprehended on September 9 and investigations are still ongoing. In total, the pair are accused of three robberies at separate residences and the police have been able to recover some of the stolen goods including jewellery, mobile phones, cameras and televisions The pair remain in custody awaiting sentencing.

Almond thieves held NINETEEN people suspected of stealing nearly 36,000 kilos of almonds and carob in the province have been arrested after an intense campaign by the Guardia Civil, resulting in the reduction of the number of reported crimes by 28 per cent.

Denia class sizes rise THE new school year began at the three institutes in Denia this September with a ratio of 33 students per teacher in ESO 1. Many are calling for extra classrooms to be created to cope with the increased demand, which in some institutes has increased by 46 per cent since last year, representing, in real numbers, 560 students, up from 382 students this time last year. The significant rise has been put down to the fact that it is the first year that students with mild mental or motor disabilities have been accepted into the institute and the education department has not adjusted its planning to take this into consideration. Calls are also being made for facilities to be upgraded since a number of prefabricated classrooms are currently being used to teach the greatly-increased number of students.

Footwear exports best since 2008 84M pairs sold during the first half of the year By Gemma Quinn FOOTWEAR exports during the first half of 2015 reached a total of €1.4 billion in sales amounting to 84 million pairs of shoes. The figures represent a growth of 17.6 per cent in value and 6.6 per cent in terms of the number of pairs over the same period of 2014. The Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries (FICE)

said this data ‘was very positive’ adding: “If we look at exports in the first half of the year since 1998, it becomes clear these are the best figures obtained since then.” The FICE noted: “This growth of 18 per cent in the footwear sector is almost four times that of the Spanish exports of goods.” The Valencia Region, which boasts most of the footwear factories in Elche

and Elda, exported the most pairs of shoes according to the FICE. Among the major EU economies, employers indicated that shoe exports increased to Germany (7 per cent), France (5 per cent) and Italy (5 per cent), while exports to the UK market fell by 2.2 per cent. Outside the EU, exports to the US fell by 5.2 per cent year on year, while Japan saw a 7.9 per cent increase.

Ibex backs Sierra Leone appeal for ebola orphans DIRECTOR to run fourth marathon to raise funds IBEX DIRECTOR, Philip Langley, is all set to participate in his fourth Sierra Leone Marathon and was presented with his race shirt by Ibex Marketing Executive, Mariana PiĂąero. The race will take place in Makeni, Sierra Leone, on October 24. Phil is raising money for the UK charity Street Child and specifically this year for their Ebola Orphan Appeal. Before the race, Phil will visit several Street Child projects across the country to see how the money raised is spent and meet some of its beneficiaries. Phil will cover all his own expenses for the

trip so that every penny raised goes to the charity. The ongoing ebola outbreak has claimed more than 4,000 lives in Sierra Leone and has left over 12,000 orphaned. More than 3,000 children have lost both parents. Their average age is just nine years old. Without help these orphans face a bleak future as they also face the stigma of being an ebola orphan and are often shunned by the wider community who themselves fear infection. The common practice of Africans welcoming orphans into their family has often not ap-

plied in the case of ebola orphans. Many are left facing a life on the streets, with no prospect of returning to school. Street Child has already supported over 10,000 orphans, giving them food, finding them safe shelter, providing school uniforms and getting them back to school. Sustainable mobility PUBLIC transport in Benidorm was in the spotlight during the recent Mobility Week with Mayor Toni Perez praising ‘the excellent possibilities of urban transport in our city, that provide another way of looking at mobility which is more respectful to the environment, considerate of the pedestrian and seeks to deliver a flexible and effective public service’. New initiatives were presented which included four new specially adapted buses to be used for transporting students to and from school that are adapted for people with disabilities. In addition, a new programme called Bicidorm, a bicycle taxi service, is set to take advantage of the new cycle paths that are being developed in the town. The new models run on a combination of petrol and gas and electric motors.

Spanish for foreign residents ALFAZ del Pi has received a grant of €1,200 for offering Spanish courses to foreign residents in an aim to facilitate integration. “Knowing the Spanish language and culture facilitates the full integration of residents of other nationalities who have chosen Alfaz del Pi as a place of residence,” said the mayor, Marisa Cortes. Elche sea turtles released PLAYA Carabassi beach hosts the first release of Spanish Mediterranean loggerheads By Buster Smith HUNDREDS of people experienced firsthand the first steps of 25 loggerhead hatchlings that have been released in Elche after a year in captivity. The turtles were kept in captivity in order to increase their chances of survival since the species is in threat of extinction. The Department of Environment and Oceanographic in Valencia chose the location and optimal time, waiting for perfect conditions before returning them to the nest. It is hoped that some of the 25 young will return within two or three decades as an adult to lay their eggs. The number of dangers and threats that await them in the wild environment make their chances of survival and reaching adulthood difficult, but their chances are significantly higher due to the intervention scheme. The eggs were originally discovered at a beach in San Juan, Alicante but were moved to a less crowded

turtle hatchlings will survive. Some of the newborns also have GPS transmitters attached to them to enable specialists from the University of Valencia to monitor them and

learn more about their movements and survival rates. Biologists are trying to understand why there has been a recent sporadic nesting of turtles on the Spanish

Mediterranean coast, including beaches in Catalonia, Ibiza and Andalucia, although it is believed it may be down to a rise in sea temperatures. Calls have been made by environmentalists and Biologists to raise awareness and they are asking for the public to report any sighting of turtles by calling 112 and importantly to not bother them should they see one on a beach. Nests are extremely fragile and can be easily destroyed by dogs or beachgoers unwittingly sticking an umbrella into a nest. Female loggerhead turtles will return up to 20 or 30 years later to nest at the same spot, so the locations where the turtles were released has been specifically chosen to take this into consideration. The Regional Minister for the Environment, Elena Cebriรก, said yesterday that if turtles do return it would be a good indicator that the Mediterranean is increasingly healthy.

Benidorm joins UN world clean-up drive ACTIVITIES held to clean up the natural environment By Buster Smith BENIDORM is promoting the Clean-up World campaign, driven by the Neighbourhood Council. It seeks to educate the public not to litter pine forests and wooded areas. An initiative created by the United Nations, the Departments of the Environment and Citizenship joined together with the Neighbourhood Council in organising a series of activities to clean the natural en-

vironment of Benidorm, which was held on September 19, 20 and 21. Councillor for the Environment, Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, stressed that Benidorm was ‘one of the few cities in Spain that has adhered to this initiative,’ a move that it intends to ‘keep active throughout the year’ and in which volunteers play a key role. Internationally, the Clean-up the World initiative counts on as many as 135 million volunteers in 130 countries, accord-

ing to data provided by Councillor for Citizen Participation, Maria Jesus Pinto. She emphasised the educational aspect of this campaign, which is to inform the public about of the importance of keeping the surrounding environment clean. skills and overall performances. In the category for best water-ski beginner the winner was Agnes Almaraz, followed by Alba and Maria Wardrobe in second and third positions. In total the local council has provided a total of 10,728 euros to the clubs that are based in the European town of sport, La Nucia. The grant will help different clubs to organise leagues, events and to participate in various federal championships. The clubs from La Nucia that will benefit

from the grants include Chess Club, Athletics Club, Radio Control Club, BMX Club, Cycling Club, Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, Paddle Club, Club Deportivo Finisher, Kick Boxing Club, Fitness Club, Muay Thai, Taekwondo Club, Spartans Football Club, Swimming Pool Camilo Cano, Off Road Club, Orientation Club, Petanque Club, Valencian Pilota Club, Squash Club, Tennis Club and a number of others. These revenues are very important to our

clubs because they can arrange for different competitions and participate in tournaments outside of La Nucia. Spanish pensioners are required to pay tax on annual income above €22,000 provided they have only one source for the revenue. The recent twist is that the tax office now considers a basic pension and any additional pension, even if they are paid from the same country, as quite separate incomes which results in a lowering of the tax threshold. The Spanish Federation of Returned Emigrants (FAER) estimates that as many as 800,000 people may be affected and they are often required to pay back-tax at very short notice with one man having to take a bank loan to cover a demand for several thousand euros which had to be paid within two weeks. With an election looming, the current government must be aware that this number of angry pensioners could be very damaging to their hopes.

But that said - it’s also important to have a healthy work-life balance and have the opportunity to do things you enjoy and spend time with family and friends. If your job dominates your life, it’s not a positive thing - no matter what you earn - because the whole point of work is to earn money so that you can have a life. Nowadays, however, many workers are spending too much time in front of a screen, jumping from meeting to meeting, eating lunch on the run, or just grabbing a coffee to keep energy levels up, and then, worrying about work at night when they arrive home. Such behaviour can be detrimental, so here are a few ideas to stay healthy at work.

CYCLE TO WORK: A little bit of exercise will do wonders for you.

On your bike: Try to introduce a little bit of extra exercise into your working day by cycling to work. Or, pack your office shoes in a backpack and put on your trainers and take a brisk walk to work each morning. The mixture of exercise and fresh air will do wonders for your overall wellbeing. Tune out: Many workplaces nowadays have somehow managed to convince their staff that being on call outside office hours is a normal state of affairs. However, the fact that you are only getting paid for 40 hours though probably working 50 never seems to enter the equation! Remember you’re an employee not a volunteer, so work as hard as you can during working hours and then step out of the office and turn off your work mobile and leave checking work emails until the following day. Give your eyes a break: Many jobs are computer dependent so employees spend hours on end glaring at computer screens. This is really bad for our eyes and induces tiredness. So remember to regularly look away from the screen and look into the distance to give your eyes a well-deserved rest.

This is the first year-onyear increase registered for hous ing pric e s s inc e the third quarter of 2008, the beginning of the financial crisis, and follows 26 consecutive quarters of declines, during which time prices have accumulated a reduction of 29.7 per cent. In real terms, discounting inflation, house prices rose

by 1.5 per cent, their third consecutive quarterly increase. In the second quarter, prices rose for both new and second-hand homes (those over five years old). The value of new homes rose by 1 per cent (to €1,732.9 per square metre) while second-hand housing prices went up by 1.3 per cent (to €1,467.5 per square metre). What is more, the most economical town to purchase property remains on the Costa Blanca - Elda in Alicante, a town with a population of a little over 25,000 - where the average price per square metre stands at €540.5.

Property price increases predicted WHILE recovery is expected to be slow but sure for the Spanish property market, certain areas including the Costa Blanca are likely to see significant property price increases next year, a new report has concluded. Acuña y Asociados real estate consulting firm’s Spanish Real Estate Market Annual Report has predicted that prices will now stabilise in most parts of the country yet popular areas including Valencia’s coasts, the Costa del Sol, Madrid and Barcelona are likely to see increases of between 3 and 5 per cent. Prime coastal areas, the firm predicts, may well see even bigger increases. Following seven consecutive years of price drops, 2014 saw an inflexion point in the cycle and this year and 2016 will register modestly positive results, Acuña’s report revealed. Although large international investors, the report said, are waiting to see what this year’s national elections bring before continuing with major projects, 2015 will certainly end with better results in the market.

In Teruel, for example, the Aldeas Abandonadas website was recently advertising a village complete with defensive tower, water and electrical supply for just €300,000. So if they’re likely to be deserted and falling down, who wants to buy them? In the past, Fafian explained, buyers from abroad with money to spare and a desire to start afresh or retired couples wanting to enjoy rural life tended to be the most interested, yet now more and more Spaniards and youngsters fresh out of university are showing an interest and in some cases payment in instalments over three or four years.

Buying a house is similar to buying a car HAVE a surveyor check your property as head mechanics do with cars John Graham The property expert

I HAD my car serviced the other day and while I was waiting for the service to be finished I decided to take a look at the car showroom. The new models took centre stage, with the second-hand cars in a separate area. The sales staff were very helpful and offered a test drive in any car I was interested in. All new cars include a minimum three-year manufacturer’s guarantee and even the secondhand cars had a one-year guarantee, and finance was available with a small deposit. The salesman confirmed that all the secondhand cars had been inspected by their head mechanic and any necessary repairs had been carried out, hence the one-year guarantee. I was even offered a discount or some free extras. As I drove home, I started to compare the car showroom experience with a typical experience of buying a property in Spain; there are some similarities and a few surprising differences.

CAR SHOWROOM: A recent visit led to property comparison. Let’s start by comparing buying a new car with buying a new property. You order a car to your personal specifications right down to the size of your wheels and included is an average three- to five-year manufacturer’s guarantee. When you buy a new property you have either had it built to your personal specifications or you have bought a new property which meets all or most of your requirements. And if the property is still under construction you may be able to personalise room designs or fittings

30,000 Britons may still be able to claim compensation FOLLOWING a 2014 ruling by the European Court of Justice that a Spanish law enacted in 2011 was discriminatory against non-residents, the government had to hastily rescind the law and offer compensation to those adversely affected. In essence, Spanish residents were exempted from paying significant inheritance tax on any property left to them, whilst non-residents were charged up to a third of the value of the property if they spent less than six months in each year in the country. This even affected those whose spouses died and left the property to the survivor. EU citizens are entitled to make a claim for the refund of inheritance tax paid between 2011 and 2014 and estimates suggest that this may affect as many as 30,000 people. Certain forms have to be completed and presented within five years. Once the claim has been lodged, the process can take as long as eight months to be finalised and approved. Whilst it is possible for an individual to complete the documentation themselves, there are also specialist companies who will undertake the work for a percentage of the value of the refund. To some extent this is old news, but time passes very quickly and readers of Euro Weekly News deserve to be reminded of the existence of this opportunity to reclaim tax paid.

So buying a new property is similar to buying a new car; you’re well protected as both come nicely wrapped in long-term manufacturers’ or constructors’ guarantees. When buying a second-hand car compared to buying a second-hand property, it’s a bit different. The head mechanic checks the car over and if he finds any problems, repairs are carried out before you buy, and you have the comfort of a

one-year guarantee. That’s when it suddenly hit me that most buyers can get more guarantees on the condition of a second-hand car costing around €50,000 than on the condition of a €2 million second-hand property. When buying a second-hand or resale property you need to know you’re not buying trouble with a capital T, and if there are things that need fixing, the seller should do the work or deduct the cost from the sale price before you purchase. A ‘pre purchase property check’ carried out by a professional surveyor is the answer; he will check the fundamentals on the property and give you a report on its condition before you decide to purchase, so you should arrange for a surveyor to check the property before you buy, just like the head mechanic checking a second-hand car, you can easily avoid buying expensive trouble. The best places to invest for profitable buy to let THOSE considering investing in a home to rent out are in luck this year as it has been found to be a more profitable exercise in Spain than it was a year ago. A report by Fotocasa drawn up from August sales and rental prices across the country has revealed that on average buying to rent is this year giving an annual profit of 5.2 per cent compared to 5 per cent a year ago and 4.8 per cent in 2013. The money invested in the property, the report says, would now take 19.4 years to recover, a year less than was reported 12 months ago. The best places to invest for this purpose, the report reveals, are the Canary Islands, Cataluña, Madrid and the Balearic Islands while the worst are Galicia and the Basque Country.

Reducing unsold housing stock INVESTMENT could experience a slight delay due to the Spanish elections due to be held by December By Maria Jose Fernandez FORTY per cent of Spanish housing stock, which at the end of 2014 sat at 1.6 million properties, will take at least 10 years to be sold, according to property consultants RR de Acuña y Asociados. The firm highlighted the fact that around 657,000 units were considered ‘problematic stock’ due to features, which make their sale complicated, and may potentially never be sold. Specifically, the company has calculated that metropolitan areas hold at least 668,000 homes for sale, while coastal regions have 331,000 units. These figures will be reduced during the next few

spending power and other areas with a lower level of stock. Thus, these areas are expected to register an increase in prices of between 3 and 5 per cent between 2015 and 2016. The company explained that property investment could experience a slight delay due to the Spanish elections which are to be held by December. “The capital does not belong to the right or the left; however, investors do want to know what lines of action will be followed by the government which is to be in control of the country for the next four years, which means that a political change could delay property investments,” the consultants explained.

Cavemen and hobbits catered for in Andalucia and Granada in particular By Eleanor Hawkins ALTHOUGH wives and girlfriends can often upset their other halves by referring to them as ‘cavemen,’ in Spain that is actually quite a smart thing to be as, rather like hobbit holes, Spanish cave houses can be some of the most unique, comfortable and spacious places to live. One of the oldest forms of accommodation known to mankind, caves usually bring to mind a small, dark, dank area to hide out in temporarily rather than a home. Yet in Spain there are many permanent cave-dwellers, and their holes in the wall are not to be sniffed at. Andalucia, and Granada in particular, are known for their beautiful cave houses and in Granada city for example the Albayzin and Sacromonte district are liberally spread with caves which, along with the Alhambra Palace, make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountainous Guadix area is also popular for cave-hunters, with hundreds of chimneys hinting at the amount of underground hidden homes.

Built completely in stone, one of the main advantages of cave houses is the ease at which temperature can be maintained. While outdoors extreme heat (and cold) may be the norm depending on the time of year, inside caves the temperature generally hovers around a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius. Natural light is used as much as possible, with caves often facing south and ingenious drilling methods used to allow more light in. Builders and decorators also come up with unexpected ways to make artificial light feel natural. Another good reason to pick a cave is safety. They are unlikely to collapse, catch fire or suffer in the case of earthquakes, experts say. For those considering becoming cavemen and women, there are many rental agencies and hotels in Granada Region which will give the curious a chance to try before they buy. There are two options: either hunt for a cave for sale or employ specialist constructors who can create a brand new, unique cave, usually in less time than it would take to build a similar house.

Barcelona property market continues to recover A RECENT analysis undertaken by the Forcadell group reports an increased demand for Barcelona flats and apartments from both Spanish and foreign investors. It is also apparent that developers are beginning to show interest in buildable land in Barcelona, indicating that they see the possibility of profitability due to increased demand and rising prices. The Forcadell analysts consider this awakened interest is thanks to the improvement in the national economy, the relative ease of obtaining credit and the falling unemployment rate.

1st property purchase by crowdfunding in Spain

RAISING FINANCE: By asking a large number of people to contribute. ON Monday September 14, 49 investors raised €80,500 via crowdfunding to purchase an apartment in Madrid which is the first reported example of use of this internet phenomenon within the Spanish market. The property actually cost €62,000 but the balance will be used to pay taxes and general renovation to the apartment.

Housers, the platform through which the crowdfunding was organised for the small apartment estimates that over the next five years the yield will be around 68 per cent of investment and each of the investors will receive dividends based on the rental income expected to be in the region of €450 per month.

They suggest that next year the amount of money raised by crowdfunding in Spain will reach €250 million of which about 15 per cent could be property investment. Crowdfunding is a way of raising finance by asking a large number of people each for a small amount of money with no expectation of return.

A possible answer to the many unsold properties throughout Spain By John Smith THE Spanish developer Espacio, which is part of the Villar Mir Group, has raised an interesting point concerning unsaleable new build property in its latest annual report. “A good part of this stock has no market, fundamentally thanks to its age, deterioration, and bad location,” explains the report, with regards to the number of unsold homes in Spain. “Part of the new housing inventory is in urban developments built in the heat of the real estate boom far from town centres and tourist attractions, which have been abandoned with the crisis, and now lack the services and infrastructure necessary for living there.” This may not be all bad news, because a lot of this property is now owned by banks who will already have written off the losses, so they can afford to either reduce prices even more or simply keep the properties on their books without trying to sell them at

More people are choosing to holiday in Spain’s luxury homes HOLIDAYMAKERS in this market sector are usually foreign, from Germany or the UK By Eleanor Hawkins

SPAIN’s luxury home rental market has shown a significant increase this summer compared to the last few years. Luxury rentals, which bring in between €3,000 and €8,000 per week, have been increasing since 2014 and tourists are mostly choosing between the Balearics, and the Costa Brava for their luxury holiday, according to the estate agency, Coldwell Banker España. Holidaymakers in this market are usually foreign, coming from countries like Germany or the UK, with French, Italian and Scandinavian tourists also enjoying

more sumptuous surroundings. In the Balearics, idealista.com says Mallorca is particularly popular for luxury holidays with visitors choosing destinations like Pollensa, Alucida, Soller, Puerto Andratx, Cala d’Or or Arta. While in Ibiza, San Jose, Cala Yundal, Talamaca, Cap Martinet and Roca Llisa are the top resorts with reservations up to 80 per cent occupation in July 2015, 10 per cent more than the same time last year, and 85 per cent

reservations in August. There is a similar story on the Costa Brava, with reservations showing 80 per cent occupancy in July, being 30 per cent higher than in 2014, and a staggering 100 per cent occupancy rate in August 2015. Particular destinations seem to attract particular nationalities. For example, Mallorca is the favourite luxury destination for Germans, Britons and Scandinavians while French, Italian and English prefer Ibiza. The Costa Brava is number one with Northern Europeans in general while the Girona coast has seen a drop in the number of Russian tourists.

Catching up on the last 10 years A FAST-GROWING economy, falling unemployment, an increase in bank lending and a re-adjustment of property prices have combined to create unique buying conditions for overseas investors in Spanish property. The end of the property crisis was confirmed recently by the Bank of Spain and the government has stated that the countryâ€™s economy is growing at its fastest rate since 2008 - close to 4 per cent in the first six months of 2015 compared with the same period last year. The Bank of Spain has predicted growth of 6.6 per cent in 2016. A 10 year report by property analyst Lucas Fox, illustrated the changes in the market since 2005, with prices rising to a peak in 2007, then falling until midway through 2013, stabilising throughout 2014 and now steadily beginning to rise again with a stronger focus on quality properties and a long-term view on both investment and lifestyle.

Construction companies rise THERE was an overall increase in the registration of new construction companies during 2015 with over 10,800 now recorded. According to a recent Dunn & Bradstreet report, 92 per cent more share capital has been invested in creating new construction companies than during the first eight months of 2014.

INTEREST RATE: Has dropped over the last year. By Eleanor Hawkins THE Euribor fell and fell, banks opened the gates and finally mortgages are becoming affordable again in Spain, although not as much as before the financial crisis.

The latest report from the Central European Bank revealed average interest on new Spanish mortgages was 2.12 per cent, while the European average was reported at 2.22 per cent. Yet just a year ago Spain was registering an average interest rate of 2.89 per cent compared to a European average of 2.78 per cent.

Rental prices continue to fall PRICES fell by 0.4 per cent in August, reports the latest Consumer Price Index by the Spanish National Statistics Institute, including property rental prices. The average price to rent a home in the country was 0.4 per cent lower than in August 2014, meaning year-on-year prices have been falling for 29 months in a row. Prices fell in all regions apart from CataluĂąa, the Balearic Islands, Galicia and Melilla, and the largest drops were in La Rioja, Valencia, Madrid, Murcia, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucia and Asturias.

OTHERS THINK IT OMG. If the Labour party thought they were up the proverbial creek with Ed Miliband, they are now most certainly right up the tsunami with Jeremy Corbyn. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to PMQ quite as eagerly as I did last week. At last the opportunity to see the new champion of lefty politics standing up and facing the opposition he has vilified so frequently in the past. Would we see a new Trotskyite giant emerge in full media glare, calling on the right wingers to explain their folly and mishandling of, well, just about everything, accompanied by the cheers and roars of his adoring benches? Ha! What we did see was a pathetic, wizened old ‘student lecturer’, neck poking up through the wrong size collar of an obviously new shirt (one of a number I may add!) looking for all the world like the last turkey in the shop, tremulously reading emails, selected apparently from over 40,000 received over the last few

weeks. What a waste of party funds, time and money that exercise alone must have cost! And it was of course a complete cop-out. Under the guise of trying to instigate ‘a new approach’ to Commons debate, he managed to avoid just about everything that an almost condescending David Cameron could have actually thrown at him. I couldn’t help but muse on the reaction of Comrade Corbyn should he find himself an elected PM attending a debate of world leaders: “Mr Corbyn, what are your views on sending in the troops to prevent us all being annihilated?” Corbyn: “Well, I do have a letter from Ada Pothwaite of Little Twittering, who would like me to ask you all when are you going to dismantle all your weapons, shake hands and live in peace with each other?” No, I’m sorry, comrade. Refusing to sing the National Anthem, electing an IRA sympathiser as a side kick, sticking prime egotist Diane Abbott beside you on the front bench and chorusing the Red Flag down the local pub? A drop in the ocean WE make no apologies for writing again about the refugees from Syria and their plight but this week will look at it from a different angle. Every day there are problems between Hungary and its neighbours with regards to the ‘hoards’ of refugees trying to move into the centre and west of Europe and the 120,000 required to be accepted by 23 member states. Let’s face it, this is a trickle compared to the number already accepted by other areas. According to the UNHCR - the UN Refugees Agency there are 2.1 million Syrians registered as refugees in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon and there are a further 1.9 million in Turkey, which makes over 4 million Syrian refugees over whom 56 per cent are under 18. Lebanon which has a population of just 4.8 million is trying to find the money to give a decent education to 400,000 refugee children. According to the government of Saudi Arabia it has 2.5 million Syrians within its border and the UAE has just accepted 100,000 to add to the 140,000 already resident. There are bound to be plenty of economic migrants wanting to find a better life in Europe rather than the Middle East with its own restrictions and prejudices but unless we take notice of where the bulk of refugees have ended up there is the frightening thought of further upheaval and civil war.

NEW software has been created by Bosch which aims to alert so called ‘kamikaze’ drivers, who either intentionally or accidentally drive the wrong way down the road. This software will be available through smart phones or integrated into the vehicle’s technology such as GPS systems. Once an alert has been activated to say the driver is going the wrong way and the driver fails to respond to the warning, the equipment is capable of forcing the vehicle to stop within a few seconds, simultaneously sending an alert to approaching vehicles of the potential hazard ahead. Bosch aims to put the technology into production in 2016, although the ability to actually stop the vehicle will only be available in those cars which have computerised assistance built in.

Police checks All drivers in Spain should be aware that the Guardia Civil traffic department will be carrying out intensified checks on the wearing of seatbelts and child restraints in cars. The use of a seatbelt is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle in both front and rear seats. There must be no more passengers in a vehicle than the number of seatbelts. Children less than 1.5m in height must use the appropriate restraints for their height and, in some cases, weight and children under the age of 12 cannot travel in the front seat, unless using a properly fitted and approved restraints. The only exception is if the child is tall than 135cm, in which case they can use the normal seatbelt. According to the DGT, 70 per cent of children are not properly protected with the correct form of restraint.

I LOVE DOGS. In fact, I like most animals but my preference for a household pet is a dog, but after today I might upgrade to a lion. I have this problem - you see my dog gets walked three times a day. He is a mutt, a soppy adorable mutt who wants to eat, sleep, have his belly rubbed (partial to that myself) and a nice walk. So why do people decide that it’s OK to let their, and I’ll use today as an example, dogs run about off the lead? Admittedly, if it’s a tiddly little thing or a soppy sausage like mine it’s usually manageable, but if it’s a pit bull, or like today a Rottweiler and a Doberman that are by nature hunting or attack dogs it’s a problem. I live up in the hills but it’s highly populated and lots of people walk their dogs.

It’s not some remote place where you don’t think you are going to run into people. Anyway I’m coming home and my neighbour is out walking his dog and I see this young Spanish lady let both her dogs off the lead. The Rottweiler does not do much but the Doberman flies across the road and starts going for his dog. She manages to get it under control and this is where the fun starts. The dog owner tells her what he thinks. Then I tell her that dogs of certain size and breed have to be muzzled and on the lead and she goes potty telling us that her dog wouldn’t hurt anyone. I’ve heard this from so many people that insist their ‘pets’ wouldn’t hurt anyone. She was not interested and didn’t even offer any kind of apology; she put her dogs on the lead and went off muttering. Owners - your dogs are not the problem - you are! If you own a dog that by law is classed as dangerous keep it on a lead or at least put a muzzle on it. Or I'm upgrading to a lion and they can sort it out themselves.

Hospital staff so insensitive at a time of great sadness I WOULD like to bring my recent experience to all the expatriates who live on the Costa del Sol. My husband was a patient at Hospital Clinio Malaga. On August 31, he sadly passed away. Within seconds of this happening I was approached by a member of staff asking if he had death insurance. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That was bad enough but then I was taken into a side room by a member of staff from Interfunerarias Malaga who wanted to know if I wanted my husband cremated or buried. I was in a state of shock and did not realise what was going on. Within about 20 minutes forms were filled in and the funeral was arranged. How insensitive can someone be? I wanted to warn others of what happened as it was obvious that one of the hospital staff was tipping off the funeral service. It shouldn’t be allowed. MT, Torrequebrada, Malaga

Car advice SO sad for the elderly victim of the runaway car in Calle Neptuno, Torrox, Malaga last week. This incident could so easily have been avoided by turning the steering wheel to full lock, with the front wheels pointing into the kerb. This simple manoeuvre works whether facing up or downhill no matter which side of the road you park on. If the handbrake lets go, the car cannot roll very far. It can still cause hurt or damage but much less severe. Even on a slight slope the kinetic energy of a ton or so of metal can rapidly build up to devastating proportions. It can also help to leave the car in gear when parking but it’s not foolproof, if the handbrake let’s go the torsion can pop the gear out of mesh, particularly in older vehicles. It was interesting to note today that the threat of further Russian intervention in Syria has given the Western imperialists pause for thought. Kerry wants to open negotiations which would leave Assad in control. The role for the UN would be to insert their presence into the region once factions agree to a cease-fire and to abide by the terms mutually agreed upon. EU chaos IN RESPONSE to Nora Johnson’s column in last week’s Euro Weekly News, Germany turned off the tap when it became obvious that only a relatively limited number of the surge were Syrians fleeing war while huge numbers were just Afghans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and other economic migrants. As for the UK, there’s already a housing crisis and a lack of wellpaid jobs that provide enough to live on. Homeless on the streets

with mental health problems plus the elderly are hardly treated as they should be. Robotics and automation in the coming years will mean many jobs will disappear overnight. So how can the UK can possibly cope with a large influx of economic migrants/refugees that want to stay there? The answer is that it can’t. In reality, this is just plain old violence against women, and children, as they are often used as weapons to threaten and keep women trapped in their nightmare relationships. This is not an issue unique to Spain, but I find that the frequency of the cases reported and the way in which they are dealt with by the authorities is in all honesty appalling. It is not about punishing after the damage is done. The difference has to be made before, through education, when men are boys who can be saved from the awful power of violent masculinity. Antibacterial soaps no better than normal soaps ANTI-BACTERIAL soaps are no more effective than plain soap at killing bacteria. Whilst many people choose anti-bacterial soap products expecting to be better protected from germs, a study has found them to be no more effective. The Korean scientists said there was “no significant difference” between the effects of plain soap and its anti-bacterial counterparts under normal ‘real-life’ conditions. They examined the effect of triclosan, the active antiseptic ingredient commonly used and tested 20 strains on how well it killed bacteria. They found triclosan had killed significantly more bacteria after nine hours or more, but not during the short time required for hand washing. Then, they compared the ability of antibacterial and non-antibacterial soap to remove bacteria from human hands using 16 healthy adult volunteers and found “no significant difference” between the two.

I’VE just received the exciting news that one of my clients is 13 weeks pregnant, so it seemed relevant for this week’s Fitness Topic. My priority for pre-natal clients is that they get safe and relevant exercises they can cope with working towards and beyond their third Trimester. First trimester is the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and providing your doctor has examined you and confirmed everything is fine, you can pretty much continue with the exercises you have been doing. Even running will do you no harm at this stage providing again

you have been running prior to pregnancy. Second trimester is 13-27 weeks. Now you may feel more comfortable to move to low impact choices of cardio exercise such as the bicycle, cross trainer or low impact aerobic style classes. She is able to use the cross trainer and the rower as long as I watch her technique and it is not uncomfortable for her. We did a class yesterday using light weights with low impact cardio. Third Trimester 28 weeks to birth. Your body will tell you how much it can cope with at this stage, I would not recommend that you train on your own especially with weights, as it is important you are able to adapt to the moves correctly and comfortably, and that you avoid flat lying exercises. No over stretching, however certain lower back exercises will help to relieve lower back pain.

IT is feared that antidepressants could make people violent. A study by Oxford University found that men and women in their late teens and early 20’s were almost 50 per cent more likely to be convicted of violent offences such as assault when taking drugs such as Prozac, Seroxat, Lustral, Cipralex and Ciprimil, known collectively as SSRIs. One in eight Britons take these commonly prescribed antidepressants, with the number of prescriptions doubling in the last decade. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, in the USA; around 11 per cent of people aged 12 and over take antidepressants.

The tablets already carry a warning that the drugs are linked to suicidal thoughts in young people and it was suspected they were also linked to violence, but researchers have now carried out more studies in this area and have found links between the drugs and violent crime. The scientists said youngsters are particularly at risk as the adolescent brain may be particularly sensitive to pharmacological interference. The young people studied were more likely to get drunk when on antidepressants and it could be the alcohol that drove them to violence. Scientists say more research is needed.

Child health education specialist, Dr Aric Sigman said parents need to act as good role models for youngsters which means leaving the phones behind when interacting with and being around their children as youngsters are also reporting they feel ‘ignored’ when their parents are on their phones. The fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, believes areas of family life need to be protected from ‘intrusions by entertainment screens’ and urges parents to reduce their child’s recreational screen time outside of school hours to just two hours a day; the level recommended by health bodies around the world.

STREET CARNIVAL: One of the major celebrations on the Costa Blanca. THE Moors and Christians Festival in Altea is one of the major celebrations for towns on the Costa Blanca, a mixture of religion, history and street carnival it features battle re-enactments, spectacular parades, impressive costumes and of course lots of noise with live bands parading through the streets and fireworks. On Tuesday September 29 it is Altea’s turn to celebrate this much loved annual fiesta in honour of the patron saints Santísimo Cristo del Sagrario and San Blas. On Friday September 25 at 1pm is the official announcement of the fiesta with

the traditional ringing of the church bells and firework rockets. That afternoon from 6.30pm the spectacular parades will start in Calle Benidorm and movr into Avenida de la Nucia, the Plaza de la Creu, Avenida Jaume I and ending in Plaza dels Sports. The music bands follow from 8.30pm starting from Plaça de la Creu to Pont de Moncau then onto the Plaça Jose Mª Planelles. The fiesta contiues on into the evening with the entrance of the Moors and Christians at just after midnight and following the route from Avenida La Nucía along Plaça de La Creu, Pont de

Moncau, Avda. Jaume I, finishing at C/ Garganes. There is an early morning parade on Saturday September 26 with more parades from 8.30pm, this time the turn of the Christians. FROM 2000 to 2007, Spain apparently built some 35 per cent of all the residential properties built in the entire European Union. So it is no wonder that many owners of those properties have found that they have only a shallow depth of soil and that the soil is of poor quality. If you are in this situation, it is futile to expect to develop a long-term sustainable garden by planting directly in the garden soil. It would be far better to build areas of raised beds with 30 to 50 centimetres of a rich water retentive soil mix from day one and cover the areas between with stone slab, tile or stone chipping terraces and paths.

The benefits will be eightfold: 1. Fewer plants will die within a few weeks, months or years. 2. Raised beds can be used for hedges, flowering plants, shrubs and trees, culinary and medicinal herb beds, a rockery, succulent or bulb collections, rose collections, vegetables and fruit plants, bushes and trees, an asparagus bed, etc, etc. 3. You can work them without walking on them and do so standing up or sitting on a seat or stool. 4. Since you don’t need to walk on the soil you can work raised beds immediately after heavy rains. 5. Watering needs will be less. 6. Easy to work if you fill with a good soil mix. 7. Provided the raised beds are on a good draining base or have low water

draining holes they will not become waterlogged even after heavy rains. 8. Less continuing frustration. Walls of raised beds can be brick, stone, aggregate blocks, wood, old doors, railway sleepers, welded or bolted sheet metal, and peat blocks, etc. They are easily built by a handyman or local odd-job man. Make the width no more than a metre. We suggest that you fill the raised beds with a mix of good top soil, homemade or purchased inexpensive natural compost from a local composting yard or ecopark, and well composted horse, sheep, goat or poultry manure. If you use all the topsoil from the areas that you are going to cover with chippings you may have sufficient soil. Since you will be starting off with fertile soil there will be little need to use addition-

al fertilizers in the first year even if growing vegetables. In subsequent years top up the surface of the soil with five to 10 centimetres of good compost and well rotted manures. To use the raised beds most productively plant trailing plants around the sides to hang down the walls as well as maximising the top of the beds. For watering we suggest you install a drip irrigation system on the raised beds controlled by a simple battery operated timer or install a water tank above the raised beds and water by gravity. If you are bothered by a neighbour’s pet cats or feral cats cover the top of vegetable beds especially at sowing and planting times with a removable wire mesh tunnel. This can be covered with clear plastic sheeting to protect overwintering and early spring crops.

Which windows do I choose? THE use of ultra Polyvinyl Chloride or uPVC has grown in popularity and is now one of the most recommended and most widely chosen materials used by the biggest double glazing companies. Below the advantages and disadvantages to using uPVC over its alternative of aluminium, are outlined and explained. Value for money uPVC is usually the cheapest material on offer after things like aluminium and timber. This is far from uPVC’s greatest attraction, but its relative cost effectiveness is certainly a bonus. Low maintenance Aluminium is resilient, but still needs attention every now and then; uPVC never rots, flakes, rusts or fades. Apart from a quick wipe with a cloth to keep it clean, uPVC requires virtually no maintenance making it very convenient and time-saving. Durability Aluminium can pick up rust whereas uPVC is strong, tough and resilient. It is highly unlikely uPVC will need to be changed and some companies even offer up to 10.year guarantees on uPVC double glazing. Security Due to its resilient and robustness, uPVC is very reliable and trustworthy when it comes to security. Their frames are constructed to the utmost

hardness making it extremely difficult to break through or damage. Aluminium is similarly if not more secure, however, and is considered to be almost totally burglar-proof due to its strength. But uPVC is not far behind. Insulation/sound Proofing Insulation is another feature of the uPVC material that surpasses aluminium. uPVC was created to be a very competent insulator and provides the best heat and energy insulation available. It is a very good insulator compared to the alternative of aluminium and this ability to keep heat in and sound out is largely responsible for its popularity. Visual appearance The major shortcoming of uPVC is undoubtedly its aesthetic value. In many people’s eyes, it’s simple, white plastic look is far from attractive and some consider uPVC frames to look unstylish or plain when compared to aluminium. With some larger companies, different colours of uPVC are now available, but when replacing windows whilst trying to keep the character of the home, uPVC may not be ideal. A REPORT has just come in concerning Annie a three- legged dog from Floral City Florida who escaped her owner, dug a hole under a shed and then promptly got stuck! Her owner called for assistance and local firefighters arrived with heavy machinery including the aptly named but somewhat intim-

idating ‘jaws of life’ with which they hoped to rescue Annie. Apparently, the poor dog was so scared that no matter how hard they tried to get her out, or how much the owner tried to encoura g e h e r, s h e s i m p l y wouldn’t or couldn’t budge from under the shed. The firefighters had a ‘light bulb moment’ and after re-equipping themselves returned with some bacon. Although the report doesn’t record whether it was smoked or unsmoked, cooked or raw, it seemed to do the trick as Annie, having sniffed at it, managed to wriggle out of the hole, ate the bacon and jumped into her owner ’s arms none the worse for the experience.

I met many wonderful trainers from around the world including Grant Teebone over 30 years a police dog handler and instructor from Australia and Dick Russell running Dog Training in Baton Rouge, LA who trained dogs professionally for over 50 years. It was his craft and his life. For more than 30 of his last years, Dick helped Baton Rouge Metro Area dog owners turn their animals into the pets they dreamed of. Dick was aware through my writings that I did not believe in anything other than teaching dogs to walk to heel, sit and stay and most important to come back when called. I was also letting dogs off leash to sniff and play and go on walks. Dick bless him used to call me the ‘Mad Dog Man’ until he received a video from me showing him my free socialisation. Recall of Toyota RAV4 RAV4 models, 423,500 of them, from 2009-2012 have been recalled in the USA due to a fault with their windscreen wipers. According to Toyota, water can corrode the link between the wiper and the motor crank arm over time which could cause the two parts to separate, meaning the wipers would stop. There have been no reports of injuries.

FIAT 500: An iconic car.

First update for Fiat 500 to keep it fresh IT was eight years ago that the Fiat 500 returned to the busy streets of Italy and then the world and there have been no significant changes to this iconic car since then, although there has been the launch of the raunchier 4x4 version. Now, however, even though they are not apparent at first glance, Fiat have announced a number of updates for the model, with some claims that there are 1,800 changes, even if some of them are difficult to see or are only available on the more expensive models. The interior sees an updated console with an

infotainment centre transplanted from the larger models within the group. The exterior sports changes to the layout of the lights and grille with some additional chrome fittings but the most important difference is that the engine has had an overhaul aimed at reducing both consumption and emissions. The car has always been highly popular but these tweaks are obviously aimed at keeping the model fresh and appealing to a younger market that needs to have all of the latest communication hard and software.

Warblers Golf Society CAPTAIN’S Charity Day held at La Sella FORTY-THREE players competed for the Charity Cup at La Sella which is now in its 15th year. Jenny and Nick Berry initiated this competition back in 2000 and continue to support this event, which is al-

ways a popular day out with the society. The day was governed by varying, sometimes strong, winds and glorious sunshine, with the whole group finishing in the early evening sun after a later than usual start. The Warblers welcomed five guests on the day: Ken Perkins, Richard Vass, Leslie Vine, David Finch and birthday boy Brian ‘Nobby’ Norbury, all from Levante Golf Society. Captain Bob Edwards scored a ‘hole-in-one’, which started a drinking frenzy creating what can only be de-

scribed as a carnival atmosphere in anticipation of their auction, raffle and presentation. The day was the peak of their campaign to raise funds for the Men’s Hospice at Fontilles, the captain’s chosen charity this year. The Warblers, as usual, dug deep into their pockets to provide not only many of the prizes but also to buy raffle tickets and bids to secure many of the auction items. With spirits still rising and the bar staff coping admirably, the place was buzzing as they moved on to

the presentation. In sixth place on her return to Spain was Vicki Loeber with 34 points (Handicap 16.6), in fifth place on countback also with 34 points (Handicap 17.2), was John Stent, with fourth place going to Deryck Williams on 35 points (Handicap 19.4). Captain Bob Edwards took third spot with 39 points (Handicap 8.8), losing out on countback to defending champion Glynn Braidley also on 39 points (Handicap 11.1). Turn to Page 111
