Lights, camera, action for Game of Thrones EXCITEMENT builds as the production team prepares for filming By Maria José Fernandez PREPARATIONS for the filming of Game of Thrones in Almeria are under way as the final countdown starts for October 10, when the film world, actors and production team will descend upon Almeria Costa and the Tabernas desert. Locations including the Chorrillo de Pechina will also feature, where the production team have announced that they will be using as many as 100 Almeria-born horses for the shooting of a single scene. Sources told Spanish daily Diario de Almeria that another scene will be filmed in the Rambla del Cautivo. Almeria City Council has allowed the film crew to use the municipal stadium Carboneras as a base for their equipment, as well as the 400 extras who will participate in filming in Paraje de Mesa Roldan in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar on October 18 and 19. Staff have been preparing scenery in the area of El Chorrilo de Sierra Alhamilla (Pechina). It is expected that they will create a town with huts around a church, which has been constructed with materials shipped from Belfast. The Almeria Citadel is also to feature as a palace. The selected extras - 1,800 men and 900 women - will be called upon from September 19 until October 17.

Fire in Huercal A FIRE started in a plot of land in Huercal was extinguished by Infoca fire prevention and extinguishing works team and the fire brigade. The blaze began at 1.40pm and the affected area was

mainly made up of bushes. The wind contributed to the spread of smoke, which could be seen even a few hours later from the area of Torrecardenas Hospital. The reasons behind the fire are still unknown.

Carriage overturns TWO people suffered injuries on Friday (August 29) at the Almeria fairgrounds after their horse carriage overturned. Sources at the 061 emergency services explained

that the victims, who were a 49-year-old man and a 48year-old woman, were taken to the Torrecardenas Hospital after receiving first aid treatment. Luckily, all injuries sustained were minor.

Bar and restaurant clients on the rise ALMERIA businesses, specifically bars and restaurants, all confirmed that they have had a much better summer than last year, with between 10 per cent

and 50 per cent more clientele. The reasons are unclear for this rise, but the national tourism has undoubtedly increased.

According to Ms Bañez, employment in Almeria is to increase at a high speed, even though, she said, August has traditionally not been a good month for employment as many tourism-related contracts are broken after the summer season. “The most important thing is the upturn we are experiencing, and that Spain is the leading country in recovery figures from across the eurozone, surpassing the average numbers by three, especially in terms of employment,” said the minister when asked by the journalists present, and continued: “The recovery is also being felt in Almeria, as currently it is the fourth province in the whole of Spain where unemployment has decreased the most since the beginning of our term in office. It is a province which generates employment and opportunities.”

By John Smith BASED on an etching published 500 years ago in 1515 by the German artist Albrecht Dürer, the statue ‘Rinoceronte vestido con puntillas’ (Rhinoceros dressed in lace) by the master of surrealism, Spain’s own Salvador Dali, is on permanent display at the entrance to Puerto Banus on the Costa del Sol. Donated to the town by a businessman to commemorate the centenary of Dali’s birth, the three-ton statue was created in the 1950s following completion of his film about a ‘lacemaker and the rhinoceros’.

€20m is the price at auction for Dali’s portrait of poet Paul Eluard. It is the highest price paid so far for a surrealist work of art, although many of the most famous Dali paintings are in museums and art galleries. Whilst a very impressive figure, it doesn’t come anywhere near two paintings by Pablo Picasso which have both sold for more than €100 million.

As is to be expected with any Dali creation, the sculpture has a number of meanings. However, apart from recognising the perfection of Dürer’s work, it refers to sex in the form of the rhino’s horn, femininity is represented by lace, and power signified by his favourite food, the sea urchin, which appears in many of Dali’s works as a symbol of perfect creation. According to Dali, the way to create perfect art was for the artist to eat 36 sea urchins one or two days before the full moon, then after a long siesta, he should sit before a blank canvas until it got too dark to see.

Chaos on the Almeria train line A NUMBER of train passengers arrived more than four hours late in Almeria after having boarded a high-speed TALGO train from Madrid. An initial incident occurred when a faulty rail, according to the company, caused one of the two Madrid to Almeria TALGO trains to arrive at its destination 46 minutes late. However, this delay was considered as ‘normal’ by the company, and does not allow passengers to receive compensation. But the second train, from Madrid-Chamartin at 2.34pm, could not even leave the station, and with the passengers already on board, the company informed them by loudspeaker that the 180 of them would have to get on board a replacement train. However, the new train did not have enough space, and 30 passengers had to be taken on a different train from Madrid to Antequera, and then by bus to their destinations. It was those who did get on the replacement train who experienced the worst luck, when it stopped 35 kilometres out of Madrid’s Atocha station. At approximately 8pm, the train was able to finally head to Almeria from Aranjuez, arriving in Almeria at 1.30am, after a four-hour delay. “All passengers were given a snack and they will have the whole cost of the ticket refunded due to a long delay,” said a company representative. The newer AVE highspeed trains were not affected by the delays, and several trade unions and opposition parties as well as other associations continue to push for an AVE line to Murcia, which would connect with Almeria afterwards.

Meteorite hits above Almeria BUT locals didn’t notice ball of fire entering atmosphere By Maria José Fernandez A METEORITE hit the atmosphere above the town of Senes (Almeria) creating a large ball of fire at a distance of around 97 kilometres on Friday (28 August). The rock, which is believed to come from a larger asteroid, entered the atmosphere at al-

most 74,000 kilometres per hour. The ball of fire could be seen in many areas of the south, centre and east of Spain, according to the Astronomical Complex in La Hita (Toledo), which registered the phenomenon. But surprisingly enough, no one in Senes seems to have witnessed the event.

From Senes, the rock headed north-east, above Granada and was extinguished at a height of around 51 kilometres above the Negratin water reservoir. Experts in La Hita reported they would now be able to extract data from the rock, including its chemical components and other extremely valuable information.

By Maria José Fernandez POLITICAL party Podemos have condemned an attack on a gay couple during the recent Almeria Fair and called for stiffer sentences for hate crimes of this nature. The group thanked the couple for having the courage to come forward and report the crime.

The attack, which happened in the early hours of Monday morning during the Fair, was not the first time an apparently homophobic crime has taken place in the province. In fact, Maria Sanchez, Secretary of the Almeria Podemos programme and in charge of the Citizen Equality Council, says this particular case is one of more than 300 or so that

is recorded every year in Andalucia and, “demonstrates that the path towards equality is a long one.” Sanchez adds “for the second year in a row, Almeria appears in the front pages of the national newspapers due to the cases of violence against gay couples” and asks governments to introduce regulations to protect this group.

Turning negatives into positives Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Maria Wilson is dedicated to helping cancer sufferers. MARIA WILSON is a force to be reckoned with. Having survived cancer on numerous occasions, she has turned what were some of the darkest days of her life in to a positive experience as she helps others with their own cancer battles and throws herself into her fundraising efforts as President of the AECC, (Asociation Espanola Contra el Cancer,) Orihuela Costa branch. It was in 2010 when Maria discovered she had another battle on her hands but she believes someone was watching over her the day she decided to go for a mammogram test. Being at Torrevieja Hospital in February 2010 for another appointment, she put her name down for a mammogram. “Something inside me said to do it and I filled in the form and thank God I did,” she recalled. Within days she was called for the test which found a lump and very quickly she was having a biopsy and being told lumps had been found in three places and that she had an aggressive form of cancer. The news was hard to digest for Maria, who said there was no history of breast cancer in her family, and had already battled cancer over 20 years before when she spent two years fighting the disease and learning to walk again as a tumour was removed from her buttock and uterus. She underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery to remove her breast. “It was a long process and I had to learn to live with it psychologically. I was having regular cat scans when my tumour of 20 years ago was found to be grow-

It was a secondary cancer which had lain dormant but had grown 16cm in a year.” Facing chemo once again, she admitted: “I was proud of my appearance and it was very hard facing losing my hair again.” Rather than dwelling on her condition after undergoing cancer treatment not once, but three times, Maria threw herself into fundraising. She founded Maria and The Pink Ladies, an army of hard-working ladies, who raise funds for the AECC cancer charity, of which Maria is now Orihuela Costa Branch President, which helps fund their research and early screening programmes. Since 2010, Maria and The Pink

Ladies have raised more than €220,000. Maria joked that she now worked harder than she did when she had a full-time job, but her dedication to the cause has also acted as a form of

therapy. “The charity work has helped me to not dwell on my own problems, but I am human and there are times when it does affect me emotionally and psychologically but ultimately it makes

me stronger and I get satisfaction in knowing I’m helping others. The best period of my life is now,” Maria said. She continued: “When you are younger, it is different; you want to enjoy life to the full but you are enjoying it for yourself, it’s more selfish. Now I feel different and get a wider satisfaction in helping others. Even if I’m in pain, this is how I see my life, helping others and one day I’d like to write a book to help and inspire other women with cancer.” In the next five years Maria is not going to rest on her laurels, she wants to see the charity get bigger and better as they work to raise funds and also awareness about early detection tests, including the mammogram screening that ultimately gave her an early diagnosis of breast cancer and saved her life. However, she would also like to see others come forward, leading the charity in her name perhaps as she finally gets round to writing the book that she dreams of whilst getting to travel more. Two men arrested for suspected theft ALL items have been seized and the men sent to prison By Maria José Fernandez TWO men from Malaga were arrested after allegedly stealing from eight different vehicles in different beaches of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park.

Investigators reported that the 36 and 47-year-old detainees hid in a secret compartment a large number of stolen items including luxury watches, phones and electronic devices which are believed to

have been stolen in the areas of Isleta del Moro, Algarrobico, Los Muertos and Cabo de Gata. All items have been seized and the men have been remanded to prison.

New animal ill treatment law

TWO drug-sale points located in Vera and Roquetas de Mar have been dismantled by Guardia Civil. According to a statement released by the authorities, several arrests have also taken place and eight doses of marihuana and 14 of methamphetamines ready to be sold have been seized. The 30 and 38-year-old detainees, from Anta and Roquetas respectively, were allegedly carrying out sales during the day in public places.

ADRA mayor, Manuel Cortés, announced that the local government has begun working to reinforce animal’s protection. The council has been very proactive in showing their contempt toward ill-treatment to animals, and have presented a new law (awaiting approval) to prosecute those who mistreat animals. The draft has been designed to increase protection, and bring those guilty of animal abuse to justice, this is to include people that abandon pets. These regulations are intended to serve as a role model for other areas.

Almeria to have its very own skyline NEW sculpture designed for airport roundabout By Maria José Fernandez

THE Almeria Council is about to take on a creative project to beautify the city’s roundabout accesses, and surprise visitors and locals alike while they are at it. The large roundabout in the

area of the airport is to be home to a new sculpture depicting the most unique buildings of the city, the Alcazaba, Almeria Cathedral, the old train station, Las Salinas church and the Cargadero del Mineral. The design aims at reflecting an urban skyline, display-

ing the most attractive, recognisable silhouettes of the city. The 138-metre roundabout is one of the biggest ones in the capital and this project has been presented by councillor Juan Jose Alonso. Mayor of Almeria Luis Rogelio Rodriguez has already given the green light to this initiative.

Fallen cable causes blackout A MASSIVE power cut was experienced on Thursday in the area of Nijar. The detachment of a high voltage tension cable in the Genoveses road in San Jose (Nijar), caused a blackout on August 27, for the whole area of Cabo de Gata and San Jose, which lasted for the entire night. According to the 112 emergency services, the incident took place at 9pm, when several

residents reported having seen a high-voltage tension cable which had fallen in the Genoveses road, in the area of the beach access. The area was cordoned off to prevent beach-goers from stepping on the cable. The faulty cable was finally fixed at 7.30am on Friday, after several hours of work.

Fake work contracts case results in 89 arrests THE National Police Force has uncovered a network of shell companies that it’s believed have cheated the state of over €1 million through fake work contracts. This large-scale police operation was spread through Almeria, Murcia and Alicante and has been ongoing for the last seven months. It’s alleged that the network used businesses that had no specific sector or work activity but curiously had 236 supposed workers, which in total has cost the Social Secu-

rity department and Hacienda more than €1.5 million. The objective of these fake contracts was to get access to work and residency permits for foreigners and to claim government benefits for most of its employees for maternity leave or unemployment. The investogators allege that there were two people at the top of the network of fake businesses and connections: the owner of a nightclub and its manager. On a second level were the managers of these shell com-

panies who it’s claimed received €150 a week to keep quiet and figure as owners of these businesses. And on the lowest level of the network were the supposed workers of these five trading companies. From November 2014 up until now, 89 arrests and 152 accusations have been made for Social Security fraud, falsifying documents, fraud and belonging to a criminal organisation, including all parties, regardless of the extent of their offence.

Almeria councils join forces FOUR Almeria Councils from the Bajo Andarax area have joined forces to request financial aid from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Development Councillor, Miguel Angel Castellon, held a meeting with mayors of Huercal, Pechina and Viator, as well as other municipal representatives of the Almeria Council, to create a

project to present to qualify for ERDF aid. The project draft is to analyse the social and economic situation of each population group, as well as create a forecast in terms of energy efficiency, sustainable development and social integration. In a second phase, the sectors in need of funding will be decided and presented before the European authorities to receive the aid.

since they last saw such prices, and this means that it costs buyers €10 less on average to fill their tanks than it did this time last year. According to the Ministry of Industry, Energy and

Tourism, there are 23 filling stations in the province selling diesel at less than €1 per litre and 14 more selling 95 octane unleaded petrol at less than €1.10. It is worth checking which

ALMERIA City is one of the Spanish locations with the lowest room rental prices. Interest in renting rooms throughout Spain has risen by 12 per cent in the first six months of this year, to 16,449,121, compared to the same period last year, according to website Idealista. Despite this, prices have only risen by 0.2 per cent to an average of €280. In Madrid and Barcelona, where interest has risen the most, prices have also increased, by three per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively. The prices have risen the most in

Burgos and Valencia, by 4.6 per cent and four per cent respectively. Meanwhile in Oviedo, it is now six per cent cheaper to get a room than it was last year. San Sebastian has the highest prices in Spain, at €346, followed by Barcelona and Madrid €344 and €339 respectively. Meanwhile, the cheapest are Albacete (€170 per month) and Almeria is amongst the cheapest at €178 on average. The tenants are mainly 30 years old on average, living in the centre of large cities, non-smokers and have no pets.

Party member accused of attempted attack POLITICAL rivalry in Las Tres Villas has moved beyond the plenary session hall and into the streets. Mayor Virtudes Perez (PSOE) has reported a member of the party Ciudadanos to the police, alleging that he attempted to attack her with a baseball bat during the patron

saint festivities in Ocaña. Members of the PSOE party explained that as a preventive measure, a 50-metre restraining order against the alleged attacker had been issued and he would not be able to contact the mayor before the trial takes place,

scheduled for September 15. On August 20 at around 4pm, according to the mayor, she was going home with her mother after a concert, when she claims the suspect, Joaquin Lopez, emerged from a door brandishing what appeared to be a baseball bat

and uttered a threatening phrase. The alleged attacker, meanwhile, said that it was the mayor’s mother who started verbally insulting him. He said he did not have a baseball bat either, but pointed out that he uses a cane as he suffers from a physical disability.

FAIR goers said price cuts weren’t applied on Children’s Night By Staff Reporter ALMERIA residents have complained that some fairground rides did not have discounted prices on Children’s Night. The official schedule for the fair in Almeria City specified that on Children’s Night, like every year, mechanical fairground rides would cost 50 per

cent less. This should be followed by anyone who wants to have a spot at the fairground. However, according to comments on the local mayor’s Facebook page, this was not the case this year. Prices were lower, but many of the operators of the rides were not applying the 50 per cent discount. Local Police, in charge of enforcing rules at the fair, say that

they were not aware of the situation and received no complaints. The Culture and Festivities Department has said that they were unaware if anyone had made an official complaint with the regional consumer department. However, if enough proof is gathered, the council will fine the owners of rides who failed to offer a 50 per cent discount.

Water service resumes after repairs in Pechina WATER supply has come back to the Camino de las Palmeras area. Aqualia, the company in charge of the water supply system in the area of Bajo Andarax announced that the low volume of water fault registered in the Camino de las Palmeras (Pechina) has been fixed. According to a statement

released by the company, on Monday (August 24) they received complaints from six different cottages in the area claiming the water service had been interrupted. Addressing the fault was especially complicated as the workers could not find the broken pipe which was located in a private land plot. Repair works were the

reason for a low water flow in surrounding properties. “After a comprehensive series of works, on Thursday (August 27), we were able to resume the service,” read the statement. It continued: “The pipe has been diverted into a public space now, which will avoid further complications in the future.”

Dog needs treatment after nasty discovery on beach A DOG suffered a strong allergic reaction at the Almadrabillas beach in Almeria after touching what looked like a giant leech. According to the owner Francisco Rodriguez, at around 1pm on Thursday (August 27), the ‘creature’ was submerged in around 20cm of water near the shore. Mr Rodriguez noticed that his dog, Pan, received a kind of a shock after touching the

animal with his nose and decided to retrieve it from the water as there were children bathing, and it could have been be dangerous. The giant ‘leech,’ which was about 30cm long, did not react to touch, or move, so Mr Rodriguez believes it could have been the tentacle of a bigger sea creature. Pan was later taken to the vet to receive treatment for the allergic reaction.

This project is part of a campaign called ‘Andalucian Paradise.’ “Even the smallest gesture, such as handing out ashtrays, can contribute to maintaining our coastal areas as a key touristic point,” said a council representative.

Objects stolen TWO precious objects have gone missing from a church in Berja. The Virgen de la Amargura rosary and the reliquary of the Berja-born lay sister Josefa Ruano have been added to the list of missing items which have disappeared from La Anunciacion church in Berja. Even though these items were inexpensive, the emotional value was quite high for neighbours of the town. “I trust the items will be back in a few days,” said priest Juan Jose Martinez.

Postal crisis affects towns in Almeria COMPLAINTS about lack of personnel By Maria José Fernandez LETTERS and packets are arriving at their destination much later than usual in several towns of Almeria, according to Correos employees. The trade union representing Almeria postal services, has complained at the lack of staff currently faced in the delivery unit of Huercal-Overa which, according to them and several residents, can be observed in the delivery delay experienced in the municipalities belonging to this branch (Arboleas, Zurgena, Taberno and HuercalOvera). Since the beginning of the summer, this unit has been denouncing the lack of personnel, saying the workers are under an excessive level of stress, as they have packets and letters which are piling up as certain areas are not being covered.

members of the regional parliament. Head of the Andalucian Partido Popular (PP) Juanma Moreno said during a meeting he held with Mo-

jacar business-owners, that President of Spain Mariano Rajoy had a strong commitment to have the AVE high-speed train arrive as soon as possible in Almeria.

However, he stressed that the project will have to first arrive in Murcia, and it is expected that the high-speed railway will do so at some point in the current year.

Work on wall comes too late RESIDENTS’ association of Las Colinas de Aguadulce has claimed that the works on the Las Colinas wall and other projects have come too late. The group has pointed out that they have continually reported the problem in which rainwater on the slopes of the hill has nowhere run to and the wall collapsed in March when heavy rain helped wash it away.

Plan proposed to improve access to natural park NIJAR Council is currently drafting a measure to be approved later this month to provide the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar with a new car park and public transport service. The town council wants to have ownership of these rustic areas, which currently belong to

the regional government, so public services like transport and the car park, amongst others, can be offered at an affordable price. This project is also expected to reduce traffic jams and overcrowded beaches with free access.

Suspected motorbike thief held NATIONAL Police officers in Almeria have arrested a man after he allegedly stole three motorbikes in areas near the fairgrounds. A witness alerted the 091 service and authorities caught him red-handed attempting to steal another motorbike in Calle Arbol del Amor. According to police, the man attempted to run away when he caught sight of the officers. The 27-year-old man was taken into custody and remanded to prison.

UK Announces New Measures Against Offshore Tax Evasion The UK government is toughening its stance on offshore tax evasion, further strengthening the deterrents and penalties. It has warned that criminal investigation and sanctions will play an increasingly prominent role in HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC) response to such tax evasion. In July HMRC published four consultations proposing tough new measures. These cover: • A new simpler criminal offence to make it easier to prosecute offshore evaders. • Tougher financial penalties for offshore evaders, including the possibility of a penalty based on the value of the asset on which tax was evaded and wider public naming of offshore evaders. • A new penalty regime for those who enable tax evasion. • A new criminal offence for corporations that fail to take adequate steps to prevent the facilitation of tax evasion by their agents. David Gauke, financial secretary to the Treasury, warned: “These proposals

When you add the new sanctions, “there is nowhere left to hide for offshore tax evaders”, he said.

One of the proposals is to introduce a strict liability offence for offshore tax evasion. Currently, a taxpayer can only be found guilty of a criminal offence if HMRC can prove that their failure to declare income or gains was deliberate. In future, if the proposal goes ahead, HMRC will no longer have to prove that it was deliberate. The failure to declare will be sufficient in itself. The maximum penalty will be a six month prison sentence. It will be an offence if a taxpayer does not notify HMRC that they are chargeable to income tax or capital gains tax in respect of offshore income, assets or activities, or if they fail to submit a tax return or include such income and gains on their return. The proposal is for the offence to

apply to all offshore income and gains, and not just to underdeclared investment returns. However, it will only apply where the amount of unpaid tax exceeds £5,000. Previously, the strict liability offence was only going to apply to income and gains hidden in countries which have not signed up for Common Reporting Standard (CRS). It will now apply to all territories. Although the consultation document says that there will be “effective safeguards” to make sure that those who make every effort to pay taxes correctly are not caught by the offence, tax practitioners are concerned that people who make genuine mistakes could be charged. The consultation will run from 16th July to 8th October. HMRC wants to hear from individuals with

offshore income and assets, tax practitioners, representative bodies and other interested parties. No start date for new offence has been announced so far, though the consultation document does say it will not be retrospective. This is the latest in the UK’s crackdown on offshore tax evasion. Over recent years HMRC has netted over £2 billion from its efforts, and is aiming to increase this by £5 billion. It has reminded taxpayers that the existing disclosure facilities will close at the end of this year, to be replaced by a new final tougher worldwide facility in advance of CRS data exchanges from 2017. 2 arrested for drug trafficking GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a 19 and 21-yearold from Roquetas de Mar (Almeria) for a crime against public health. During a routine police control at a popular clubbing area of the town, officers noticed the driver of a vehicle carrying out suspicious manoeuvres which encouraged the police to stop the car. They then requested the driver to open the car and officers reported to have sensed a strong smell of marihuana. Authorities carried out a search and found three large plastic bags filled with cannabis sativa. A total of 1.3 kilos of marihuana was seized by Guardia Civil, as well as the car the two detainees were using to allegedly transport the drugs. Both men have been remanded to prison.

They have designed and developed a new type of solar panel that is completely transparent, hence it could be installed on the roofs of greenhouses without impeding the rays of sunlight from passing through and at the

same time generating immense quantities of electric energy that could cover the whole consumption of Andalucia. These new solar panels are composed of small organic molecules that are able to absorb rays of light of a specific wavelength that is invisible to the human eye. Once absorbed, these rays of light are

trapped and sent to the outeredge where photovoltaic cells transform them into electricity. On a final note, the yearly income of greenhouse-based businesses could go from its current 2.5 million euros to a total of 4.3 million euros thanks to all the energy these amazing solar panels would produce.

A 68-YEAR-OLD man died on Friday (August 28) after being run over by a tractor he was handling in Camino del Gato (Velez Rubio). Upon their arrival Guardia Civil and medical staff could only certify the man’s death as he had received serious chest injuries.

At around two in the morning, National Police were alerted by the security guards of the hospital to a fight involving three or four people, according to sources from the investigation. However, before the police arrived, the suspects had fled the scene. One of them had gone as far as using a fire extinguisher to break the glass door of the emergency room which shattered into pieces. Police are currently investigating the events and officers believe the men involved had gone to the medical facilities after a car accident.

Suspected molester faces jail NINE years in prison have been requested by the prosecutor’s office at Almeria’s Provincial Court for a man accused of molesting a 13-yearold girl. The events took place in February of 2014, when the man, of legal age, allegedly convinced the girl to have intercourse with him at her grandmother’s home, according to the version provided by the prosecution. It has also been alleged that the man requested sexual favours on several occasions. A €20,000 compensation for the minor has also been requested for psychological damage as well as a 200-metre restraining order which will also prevent the accused from communicating with the girl for a period of five years.

Born in 1819, just four short years after the Battle of Waterloo, Victoria was the only daughter of the Duke of Kent, fourth son of George III. She would have had no expectation of inheriting the monarchy, but for the fact that her

father died soon after she was born and his three older brothers had no legitimate children. Suddenly at the age of just 18, Victoria was Queen and Empress. Just like Victoria, the Princess Elizabeth had no expectation of becoming Queen as her Uncle Edward VIII was the oldest child of George V and was the heir apparent. With his abdication in 1936, however, her father George VI became King and she became next in line. Her father was only 56 when he died and Elizabeth II ascended to the throne at the relatively young age of 25. Similarly, as they reached such august ages, their sons and heirs had a very long wait to accede to the throne. King Edward VII was 59 before he be-

A BELGIAN-AMERICAN fugitive wanted in connection with the trafficking of blood diamonds was arrested at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport on Friday (August 28). He was picked up by National Police officers under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Belgian authorities. The 64-year-old businessman is the first person to be arrested on suspicion of trading blood diamonds - illegal gems used to finance the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s, in which more than 50,000 people died. He is accused of using slave labour to mine for diamonds in Sierra Leone, then of trafficking the stones to Liberia, where the former president Charles Taylor, now in jail for his role in war crimes in the conflict, used them to fund a rebel army back in Sierra Leone.

IT has been a game of two halves for the Great British Pound (GBP) versus the Euro in August. GBP started the month sitting nicely at 1.40 and on the back of positive UK inflation feedback GBP managed to squeeze higher to 1.43. At the time, the thought process was that higher inflation would shorten the time-span to a UK interest rate rise. The Pound rallied and the Euro was pushed lower. In addition there was expectation that the US would look to raise interest rates this year and that this could be as soon as September. This allowed USD strength against the Euro and in turn helped the Pound to maintain good levels against the Euro. Fast forward to the 26th August and the Pound was down 4 per cent from the highs of the month.

RALLY: Fallout in equities has supported the Euro in the latter half of August. So what happened? The move is directly related to the bloodbath in Chinese equity markets which has in turn tripped into global equity and FX markets. The People’s Bank of China has

responded to the sharp sell-off in equities and the weaker growth feedback by cutting interest rates and weakening the value of the CNY. Whether this sell-off will stabilise or catalyse is a key

question. For FX markets the response has been to buy the Euro and the Japanese Yen on any fallout in equities and this has supported the Euro rally in the latter half of August. Feedback from Germany was positive with GDP rising and the IFO survey posting a good reading. In particular the Euro has rallied against the USD and this is due to a much lower chance that the Federal Reserve will move on interest rates in the near term given the fallout from China. The Euro has rallied a massive six cents against the USD in the latter half of August. So what can we expect moving forward? Well, the situation in China is far from clear and all eyes will be on the People’s Bank and its ability to stabilise the markets. A further sell-off could help the Euro, whereas a recovery from the lows should see the Euro shed some of its gains. Looking outside of the stock market turmoil and focusing on the central banks we are likely to see the US delay a rate hike until next year and similarly the UK may also delay their lift-off. This should favour the Euro in the short term.

Strike call threat to airports IN an effort to ensure that the increase in passenger numbers to and from Spain is 2015 continues into next year, the government has announced that it will be giving airports a number of incentives with the hope and expectation of opening new routes to increase passenger footfall even more. However, it’s one step forward and one step back - just after the Malaga baggage handlers strike was called off - as three unions, CCCO, UGT and USO, have called for stoppages at Menzies Aviation Ibérica, which manages the check-in services at various airports. Many of the low-cost airlines including some from UK are likely to be affected with the first strike due to take place on September 4 at Madrid Barajas. If no agreement is reached, then the strikes will escalate and will include Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Mallorca.

In business, when dealing with clients, it is your alter ego that will do much of the work for you. In business for 25 years, I had little choice but to wing it. Every salesperson knows the feeling: exhausted, dispirited, it is late and you have one more appointment. You know you’re going to be on ‘stage’ for at least two hours, maybe longer. As the door opened my face lit up. Immediately filled with passion I warmly greeted my client. With boundless enthusiasm I learned all about his trade. To my credit I must say I did so with genuine interest. It was more important to me that he does well than I succeed. I think this came across and it paid dividends. Although I had pitched the benefits of my service more times than Phantom of the Opera runs, I presented my service with evangelistic enthusiasm. This paid well, too. My advice is, if you can sell, choose a product or service you genuinely believe in. If you don’t believe what your tongue says, then your client won’t either.

Have the confidence to say: “Show me the money because I’m worth it” Loose change Jane Plunkett A look at finance for females A LOT of news has been whirling around recently about the gender pay gap, highlighting how women often receive salaries that are not equal to those of men doing the same job. Female bosses work for free 100 minutes a day because they earn 22 per cent less than male managers, according to a new study from the UK. So if you tot this up, it adds up to 57 days of ‘free’ work a year. Many reasons have been quoted as to why women are not getting their fair share, and these reasons include old-fashioned sexism and a general sense that a woman’s work is not as worthy as a man’s. But sometimes a woman can be the instrument of her own downfall, too. For example,

research shows us that women in general are not as likely to put themselves forward for a promotion or ask for

a pay rise, for the simple reason that they’re more likely to work part-time, freelance or on flexible contracts,

which means asking for what they want often has to be balanced with job security. Because a woman might have secured a job that allows her to attend to her family at the same time, she often feels that she is not entitled to rock the boat and ask for better pay or a promotion. This type of thinking does not help to secure a bright future for any female in the workplace. It ultimately also has to do with confidence and a value of self-worth. For example, I have a professional friend who is frequently asked to speak at events. She often does so and when she is told there is no pay for speaking, just ‘exposure’, she still humbly agrees. But if the event is charging people to enter, the least they can do is pay a fee to their speakers for all the time and preparation needed to speak at the event. If you want other people to respect your time, remember you first have to respect it yourself.

OTHERS THINK IT MORE than three years ago, when ISIS was on the march, it struck me that such was the speed and success of their early onslaughts, their troops and armaments had to be seriously stretched and spread out. To me it was obvious that, at that point they were not only highly dangerous, but also at their most vulnerable. Subsequently I suggested that before they had time to organise and regroup they should immediately be hit with all the air power the allies could muster. Well the pussy cats in power did precisely nothing. ISIS is now so ‘dug in’ it will take two things to shift them. One is a vast international ground force, armed with the very latest in technology and equipment (including limited nuclear) along with an unrelenting bombardment from the air. Alternatively, engage them in a round-the-table IRA style ‘negotiation’. Which brings me to another piece I wrote at around the same time. In it I suggested we

withdraw all our forces from the Middle East and use them to strengthen our own borders. We then wait for the victors to emerge (not necessarily ISIS) and then open negotiations.

These people are not silly. Despite their Jihadist intentions they know that sooner or later they are going to have to deal with the West (someone has to buy their oil). Meanwhile, to accommodate the large numbers fleeing the war zones, we build large holding camps across Europe. These camps should offer fair accommodation, medical facilities and a department similar to a citizens’ advice bureau advising and issuing permits for refugees on how to work and reside legally in the countries allocated. Without our interference there would be no excuse for terrorist attacks on our home soil and sooner or later, without more loss of allied lives, peace should finally prevail. Dream on, Leapy. my and turn anything into gold. Juncker has a track record as a tax swindler. Forced to resign his 18-year long tenure as Prime Minister of the Lilliputian State of Luxemburg he was pursued on fraud charges. He milked national economies by creating offshore tax benefits for over 200 multinational conglomerates. His apparent accomplice, Jyrki Katainen, is Finland’s former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. An accomplished chef he is likely to be best remembered for cooking the books. After destroying Finland’s economy, he was driven out of town by the electorate. No problem, he was appointed EU Minister of Finance. Their formula for a successful economy works like this: €1goes in and €15 comes out. The EU investment plan is to create from thin air €8 billion guarantee which then becomes €21 billion in money. This is multiplied 15fold. Good, we are all rich. Don’t try this at home. Mr Juncker never denied that compromises and deals worked out in EU meetings need be protected from public scrutiny, by lies if necessary. “When it becomes serious, you have to lie,” he said.

FURTHER to the justifiable demand for expats to be given the vote on continued UK membership of the EU. We have heard from politicians of all persuasions, how advantageous it is for Britain and the British people to be a part of this great institution called the European Union. This has been drummed into us since those far off days of the Common Market, when we were told by that treacherous upstart Edward Heath - hand on heart that free and open trade was its only objective, and each nation would retain its sovereignty; make its own laws, and keep its national identity. Then via the EEC, we arrived at the present state of play and the all powerful European Union with its unelected Commission devising thousands of new laws and directives governing the way we eat, sleep, breathe, and soon I suspect, think. We all have our opinions about Europe and whilst there are people who will make a judgement based on sound logic and reason, I believe that the majority will make their decision based on the following criteria:

ESPE’S at it again. Esperanza Aguirre, Partido Popular spokeswoman at Madrid City Hall suggested an unholy alliance with Ciudadanos and Antonio Miguel Carmona, the PSOE’s socialist spokesman. They could then oust Madrid’s mayor Manuela Carmena from city hall, Aguirre suggested. A former Cabinet minister and ex-president of the Madrid autonomous region, she hankered after notching up city hall, too, but lost May’s municipal elections. She was defeated by Carmena who had the backing of, but does not belong to, groups close to Podemos and the PSOE. It wouldn’t require massive PSOE support and would only require Carmona to cooperate, Aguirre said. What’s more, Cs defeated candidate in the municipal elections Begoña Villacis would make a “magnificent” mayor, she predicted.

A tremendous response to a family medical emergency I HAVE had family over on holiday. A friend of my granddaughter was taken ill on August 25 after 11pm and because of her condition I had to call for an ambulance. The whole service from then was fantastic, within 10 minutes an ambulance arrived with three medical personnel. They stabilised the young girl and called for a second ambulance. This arrived again within minutes; she was taken to Torrevieja Hospital. There she was promptly seen by the hospital staff and she remained overnight for observation and then allowed home. I would like to thank all the personnel including the 112 operator, the ambulance crew, as well as all at the hospital for the tremendous service. BB, Torrevieja (Alicante)

Great concert LAST night, like many others, I went to a free concert at the Rosario Gardens in Casares to see Madeline Bell, and what an amazing night we had! She is just an incredible singer – her beautiful clothes, her constant interaction with the audience and most of all the fabulous voice. She is just full of life and gives out the ‘feel good’ factor. We all had a great evening. Her accompanying chap David on the keyboard was also great. She dedicated her evening to ‘all the people we have lost’ adding a tribute to Cilla. I was convinced when the animal charities got involved and it was printed in the Euro Weekly News on 13th September 2013 that something would at last be done for these two stressed and unhappy elephants. A man brings them out on market days only so the tourists can take pictures and entice them to the circus just for money. AMAZON have been in the news recently about their treatment of their staff but I’m afraid it does not stop there. I would like to warn the Englishspeaking Euro community ( who do not speak Spanish) in Spain of the

dangers of shopping at Amazon. es. I have spent many, many euros with Amazon in Spain but their latest treatment of me has put me off for life. I purchased an electronic machine from them which came with instructions in Spanish and I can appreciate that fact, but when I asked if the instructions could be supplied in English, I was harangued by a very rude, unrefined vendor. Since then Amazon have refused to take the item back and have washed their hands of the affair. MY immediate neighbours engaged a man to do some work on their roof. Thinking that perhaps it was a necessary repair after a high wind last week I checked three of my five roofs, which were easily accessible, and found all were in good condition. Two hours later, on completion of my neighbours’ job , the workman came to me and assured me that he had noticed that at least one of the roofs I had not been able to check was in need of urgent attention. He offered to go onto the roof, take photographs, and quote me a price for the repair. He brought a ladder, hauled his 100kg body onto one of the three checked roofs, and I then heard tiles being moved as he scrambled around. When I climbed his ladder, I found that a number of the tiles on the three roofs I had previously checked as being in good condition had been pulled away and some had even been inverted. I ordered him to leave immediately and, using my own ladder, I found a total of 21 tiles had been disturbed on the three roofs and a further 10 on the other two unchecked roofs. Battery problems AS part of this series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man EVERYONE who knows me will agree I have a great sense of humour and I’m pretty good with some witty one liners… but apart from that I am a serial complainer! I can make Victor Meldrew look like a total amateur when it comes to having a moan, so when I was asked to write a few words about some of the things that really tick me off I jumped at the opportunity. I am going to start with the selfish, lazy, inconsiderate, ignorant, very healthy, youngish toerags that park in disabled bays and do not have a blue badge. I am registered disabled and have to use a wheelchair to do any kind of shopping. The joke is if you say anything to these idiots, who only think of themselves and don’t realise how hard it is to get a wheelchair out of a car in a normal space, they all look at you like “so what?”. The best is “I’m only going to be five minutes.” I have also had “I’ve got a bad leg.” Ladies - having a baby is not a disability. Just

Flash gits having a big Merc, BMW or large four wheel drive - this is also not a disability and just because the space is bigger and it might stop someone touching your car door - DON’T PARK THERE!. In the street your car will be towed. In store car parks it’s just common sense. The reason the spaces are near the entrance is because disabled people need a bit of help. I hope that those of you that park there never ever have a real reason to do so, but until then please think before you park of the problems you are causing. By the way, if you still decide to park don’t be surprised if you find a very sticky note on your windscreen saying ‘BEING A SELFISH INCONSIDERATE IDIOT IS NOT A DISABILTY.’

FLAT BATTERY: Better to charge it slowly. FINDING out you have a flat battery as you turn the key in the ignition is one of the most inconvenient, yet common occurrence for drivers. The life expectancy of your car battery is typically four to six years. Several factors determine how long your battery will last such as weather conditions, vehicle type and driving habits. Why is my battery flat? Make sure to check all the electrical connections and ensure that the battery is kept clean and dry. If corrosion has built up over time, baking soda in a water solution and an old toothbrush is ideal to clean the battery terminals, just make sure to remove the negative terminal first and when reconnecting, put the positive terminal on first. Cold weather makes it more difficult for an already weakened battery to hold its charge. Storing your car in a garage during spells of cold weather will help make it easier to charge.

Charging your battery The type of charger you own is important in the safety of charging your vehicle’s battery. It is safer and better for your battery to opt for the slow charging method. A fast charge increases the potential of overcharging your battery and can create permanent damage. Replacement and recycling Your local garage or recycling centre will take your old car battery, usually for a small fee, as it is illegal to dispose of your car battery in the usual way with household waste due to its toxic nature. If it is still in reasonable condition, it may be reconditioned for use or its components melted down for use in the future. Keeping your car battery fully charged means your battery will have a longer lifespan and use energy more efficiency. Remember, the first time your car doesn’t start straight away, it is a warning that you will need to replace your battery.

Are dash-cams legal in Spain? I have been driving a UK registered car but they are clamping down, so I have decided to buy a new Spanish car. I have 30 years of no claims discount on my insurance. In order to keep my premiums low, I am considering buying a dash cam but I wonder if it is worth the investment. The U n f o r t u n a t e l y, the short answer is no. The magic of flamenco from home to Turre and back Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

IT’S a Spanish secret. Even to them. It concerns every single Spaniard ever born. For they are like onions formed of different layers that sit upon each other yet remain a singularity of a complex format of layers; some inconsequential and others of great importance and relativity. Generally you have to know that person well before some inkling of their uniqueness surfaces. A case in point: Across the valley lives the subject of last week’s ‘cuento.’ I don’t visit him often as he being a farmer I presume will have little in common other than our greetings and salutations to each other in coffee shops over the last 25 years. He greets me loudly and I respond to him as my favourite neighbour who I tried once to kill, which allows me to again tell the tale about Julia his once favourite javelin. Two weeks ago my friend Dominique suggested we get a group together and go to the Flamenco. Juan Grima, one of Turre’s sabios has kept the

As a personal trainer, I work this figure out during the client’s first assessment. To gain 1lb of muscle you need to take in an extra 2,500 calories per week or an extra 400 calories per day. This also depends on individual metabolism, therefore you may require more or less. You would need to monitor this and also make sure you are gaining muscle and not fat. BLOOD TEST: Scientists search the blood for DNA mutations. By Steve Walsh SCIENTISTS have come up with a blood test to detect the return of cancers which have grown again after treatment. The researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research in London carried out a trial on 55 female cancer patients who were are high risk of relapsing due to the size of their tumour and discovered 12 cancers out of the 15 women who had relapsed.

By analysing the mutated DNA of the tumour, they were able to search the blood for the same mutations, thereby finding cancers which they would not normally have been able to detect. Of the group, 15 patients relapsed and the blood test was able to advise 12 of them. The other three all had cancers which had already spread to the brain. While the trial detected traces of breast cancer eight

months earlier than doctors would normally have been able to discover it, it is likely to be a long time before such a test is readily available. While blood analysis is cheap to do, the expense of analysing the DNA of cancerous is significantly more and while early detection of cancer is crucial in improving the chances of survival of patients through early treatment, it is not an easy process.

Of course the most difficult adjustment is always sleep, especially for teenagers, since they often have a lot more late nights and lie-ins during the summer holidays. Researchers at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital have found that “a lack of sleep can cause poor academic performance due to poor concentration, behavioural issues due to irritability, physical symptoms like fatigue and headaches, or mental issues

suggest gradually adjusting bedtime and wake-up times

by 30 minutes every two to three days over a couple of

Teenagers need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep but often go to bed after 11pm so as a strategy try to schedule activities early enough for them to finish earlier and have some wind down time. As light from smartphones and other electronics can interfere with the body’s melatonin production during sleep, they should not be used in the hour before bedtime. That means ban them from the bedroom!

Young Kite Surf Champion up where she belongs OSAIA has been displaying her incredible talent in Kite Surfing since she was a toddler By Wendy Ann Cowham OSAIA REDING COMMAILLE is only 11-years-old and was born in Almeria. She is a student at Bartolome Flores School in Mojacar, but she has much more to offer outside the classroom, as her Kite Surfing talents have lifted Osaia right up there above the surf where she belongs. Osaia has been displaying her incredible talent in Kite Surfing since she was a mere toddler. She started to show interest in the sport when she was only two years old as she used to Kite fly with her father, Sebastien on his surf kite. She is a natural born surfer and as her parents run a beachside business, it was only natural Osaia took to the waves in no time and quickly mastered the art of surfing.

OSAI REDING COMMAILLE: Is now championship material. She was seven years of age when she surfed the waters in Ridregues Island, Mauritius and really began to feel her sea feet. The year after she

was surfing the waters in south Morocco and her skills were growing stronger by the years and the attention Osaia was receiving was an un-

derlying message that this was her future. Osaia spent three months in Brazil where she continued her training as she joined the kite and home schooling programme there. In 2014 she participated in her very first world championship and achieved third place. This year Osaia entered the Spanish Kite Surfing Championship. And she achieved third place in the Spanish Cup, and came in seventh in the World Championship (VKWC) in July. Through the support of her parents Debbie and Sebastien, Osaia has bloomed into champion material and has many more plans for the future. She has mastered the arts of Wakeboarding, Surfing, Skateboarding and also Taekwondo which assists her skills for Kite Surf.

Fluent in French, English, Spanish and Brazilian, this is the girl to see and hear as she has raised the eyebrows of Mojacar Town Hall. This museum is based in the city centre in a renovated historical building, a palace house from the end of the 19th century, which was opened as an olive oil museum in June 2001, exhibiting this tourist attraction to visitors. The building is divided on two floors. On the first floor, there are Tourism Office facilities as the interpretation area. A typical Spanish ‘tapas’ area can also be found on this first floor as well as a recently discovered passage from the 17th century. On the second floor is a restaurant area. For many centuries, olive oil was used for hair care and cosmetic purposes. In Greece, it was an oil that was added to massage ointments, but it was also used as a therapeutic oil for athletes of the time. On the other hand, Roman culture attributed olive oil to purely cosmetic pur-

This will be three days which are packed with activities, music and all sorts of games. Friday, September 11, marks the start of the event with the performance of Duo Vegasur and the best musical hits played by Ernesto DJ. On Saturday, September 12, there will be a mass held to honour the Virgin Mary with the assistance of a flamenco pilgrim’s choir in El Parque del Barrio. If you decide to stay and

see what is next, you will be marching through El Barrio starting at La Hermita in a procession. At the end of the night, and to end it on a high, the dance group Gines y sus Niñas will perform, as well as Duo Vegasur and Ernesto DJ repeating from the night before and not stopping until the sun comes up. Finally, on Sunday September 13, there will be fun and games for all the children present and a trophy presentation ceremony for the winners of the 3 x 3 football sala competition. Tips for new gardeners WHETHER you are new to Spain or have just moved to a new area and were wondering how to go about your garden, here are a few tips to help you. Try to use available natural material to build your flower beds. Local rock and stone will look much nicer than brick or other fabricated material. If your garden is on a mountainside, don’t make a path which goes straight from top to bottom. A winding path will be easier to build and negotiate. If you don’t want bare concrete but are on a budget, cement the odd flat stepping stone in place and fill the gaps with gravel - cheaper than paving. If you don’t want to spend your whole life with a hosepipe in your hand, then install a watering system. Prune Lantana, Oleander and Hibiscus any time from November until February. Wear gloves to prune Lantana, Oleander and to cut cacti as many people suffer allergic reactions to these. Lantana seeds and Oleander leaves are highly poisonous to animals. English bulbs will grow here, but plant them early as they’re likely to flower far ahead of when you might expect. For winter colour, use bedding plants in pots; you can buy petunias and other common bedding plants all year round.

A FTER y e t a n o t h e r h o t largely r a i n l e ss su mme r more and more house owners are turning to Xeriscaping, the art of designing and constructing gardens that require t h e m i n i m u m o f moisture other than the occas ion a l r a i n f a l l a n d th e dampening effects of low clouds, sea and river mists, and overnight dews. It can be done. Just look at the banks alongside the motorways, the verges of country roads, the sides of mounta i n s a n d m o u n ta in tops, cliff faces, and the inland si d e o f sa n d d u n e s along the coast. In your garden you will need to: a. replicate the soil structures of such places, b. plant trees, shrubs and plants that seem to survive and even thrive under such conditi o n s. Se e t h e p la n t lists in the book ‘HOW TO USE LESS WATER IN YOUR GARDEN’ which is mos t e a si l y o b t a i n e d v ia Amazon Books, c. plant roots so that they are under rocks where moisture is the last to dry out, d. create semi-shaded positions or areas that are only in full sun for part of the day, e. contour the garden so that any rain is channelled to where required and not lost into non-planted areas or to neighbouring properties, f. take out the thirstiest plants in the garden or replant them where they can be easily watered by gravity from tubs of rain water collected by installing guttering on at least one roof or by running washing up water and wa sh i n g m a c h in e water t o t h e g a r d e n v ia a

ANTHROPOMORPHISM is the word that is used when we believe dogs have the same feelings and emotions as humans and that they understand our language. A mistaken belief, of course. Dogs are not small, fur-clad human beings. They are canines. True, they are man’s best friend because their natural instincts and hierarchical society blend into our own, and they show loyalty and devotion to the hand that feeds them. This bonding between man and dog happened thousands of years ago when both man and wolf lived similar nomadic lives as hunters roaming the land. The dog’s adaptation to our way of life was accelerated by man using selective breeding to develop the most desirable features, first to work for us and then as pets. There remain, of course, fundamental differences between us and our dogs: dogs live totally in the present moment. They do not worry about the past nor dream about the

They do have a high sensory ability which is often mistaken for a kind of sixth sense. They will understand that certain words like sit, stay, down require the right reaction if they are to be rewarded with a tit-bit or praise. They will understand whether your tone of voice and facial expressions are good or bad when you are talking to them, but they will not understand longer phrases.

We often attribute human emotions to dogs when, in fact, they are reacting instinctively. We assume our dog is happy to see us when we return home and it looks pleased and wags its tail. All it is doing is reacting in the same way a wolf puppy reacts when the pack returns from a hunt. So please do not attribute dogs with human emotions. Try, instead, to understand their simple canine minds, which are untroubled by so many of our emotions.

The Andalucian Hound: known to us since ancient times THIS breed of dog is commonly known as a Podenco Andaluz and is very similar to the Ibizan Hound, and they have been seen in paintings within caves where people lived in ancient times. Spanish farmers are known to use them for hunting or guarding the land. The Podenco comes with three types of coat, wire- haired, longhaired, and smooth-haired. They have excellent sight, hearing and smell which make the larger ones ideal as watchdogs and the smaller breed for seeking out vermin. The Podenco also makes a good pet as they are intelligent and quick to learn.

If you care for your pet, always check with your vet on the correct diet for him as most conditions can be dealt with and keep the human treats where they belong, in the kitchen.

EXOTIC PETS: It can be challenging to look after them properly. THE more unusual of animals kept as pets are known as nondomestics or exotics. Examples include snakes, terrapins, lizards, scorpions and frogs. The RSPCA have concerns about the welfare of these animals when kept as pets, due to how difficult it can be to meet their needs. Exotic pet species, as wild animals in captivity, have the same needs as they do in the wild, linked to a specialist environment, diet or behaviour. It can be challenging to look after them properly. The RSPCA are opposed to the trade in wild-caught animals. Some exotic species, such as primates, should never be kept as pets as they have complex needs that can’t be met in a home environment. We would urge anyone considering an exotic pet to find

out as much as possible about the animal’s needs and whether it is a realistic pet for you. Consider: How long the animal will live and how large it will grow. What it eats and how much. What environment the animal needs. Many exotics require a carefully-controlled

environment, or they may become sick and even die. The environment must allow for natural behaviour like burrowing, climbing or basking. Size of enclosure - this is likely to increase as the animal grows! Should the animal be kept alone or with others? Will it be active at night or during the day?

NEWS that Greece’s PM, Alexis Tsipras, called snap elections in a bid to return to power is only the latest step in a drama more like a Carry On Up the Acropolis-type farce than a Shakespearean tragedy. Let’s leave aside the question of whether the euro was flawed from the start, or whether Greece should have been allowed to join (all agreed on that answer, right?), and consider what’s happened since the crisis erupted. The Greeks (individually and governmentally) ended up in this mess by stubbornly, for years, living beyond their means, supported by the

EU élite who, for political reasons, continued bankrolling them until (as usual) the bubble burst. The Greek electorate seemingly thought the overspending could continue ad in-

finitum. A view not shared by their creditors, given there’s no prospect of Greece ever eliminating their increasing debt (unless perhaps a huge gold mine’s discovered, and frantic

fracking begins, under the Acropolis). Tsipras promised them the earth, Marxist moon and stars (generous pensions, low levels of VAT, high levels of tax avoidance) and they bought it. At the time of writing (but, hey, this is Greece. Anything’s still possible!), he’s turned the poker game into a round of Russian roulette by calling a referendum on the bailout proposals. Interestingly, the British electorate faced a similar choice in May, but decided to stick with the party that had taken them out of fiscal bondage. The Greeks had a similar choice (their then government slowly turning things round), but they chose the easier path of false promises putting the lunatics in charge of the asylum. Now all must suffer for their reckless choice. And Mr Tsipras, how can he lose?

Unconstrained by past policies he advocated to oppose austerity and achieve debt write-downs, he’s still purring in front of the foreign cameras and striding the corridors of power like a Colossus, adored in Athens like a latter-day Achilles for taking on the Titans of Europe. So, what’s the betting Greece defaults yet again if Tsipras wins a new majority and we go through the whole we-want-EU-money-but-without-any-austerity process again - a saga increasingly like Groundhog Day or DFS summer sales? Looks as if this new bail-out could be derailed before it’s even begun. CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Two Wood Triples Competition between August 19 and 21. This competition really focuses the mind, as unlike singles and triple competitions you only have two woods so you have to be very accurate. The weather was again extremely hot and humid, but did not deter from some excellent bowling. One of the surprise results was the round between Sue and John Sephton with Peter Sands against Sue and Dave Jenkins with Arthur Lees. John, Sue and Peter’s team couldn’t put a foot wrong, and

ended up winning the round 249 with two ends to spare. The final was between John, Sue and Peter against Sandra and Peter Marriott with Tony Ashworth. represented. There are some names amongst them who will already be recognisable such as Charley Hull and Melissa Reid from England, Anna Nordquist from Sweden and Catriona Matthew from Scotland. Each

of these excellent golfers have competed at the EuroNations Cup when it was held at La Sella in the Costa Blanca. There are also two ladies who will be generating a lot of support from Spain, as the team includes Azahara Munoz from Malaga and Carlotta Ciganda from Pamplona. The pressure is ON! This year there is even more pressure on both teams for quite different reasons. Two years ago the European team defeated the US on American soil and two years previously they had won in Europe. So the hope is that they can defend their title and wrap up a third record-breaking win. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the argument, the US team will be desperate to ensure that this doesn’t happen. Adding to their own disappointment, the recent re-

sults for the US Ryder Cup teams have been dismal, to say the least, and especially the humiliating defeat referred to as the Miracle at Medinah in 2012. The US typically do not take defeat very well and there will be very strong support for the Solheim Ladies despite the fact that the location is Germany. Like the Ryder Cup the format involves pairs coming head-tohead in the first two days and then the full team in a one-to-one Grand Finale on the third day.

AGUILON: The latest competition saw nearly 40 players take part.

FORUM Golf Society’s latest competition saw nearly 40 players taking part in a team Irish Fourball at Aguilon, on August 28. Once people actually understood the slightly complicated format it proved to be extremely popular, and in particular with the winning team of Dave Vickers, Brian Gyer, John Mills and Jim Bridge whose score of 82 points was enough for victory by a narrow two point margin from both second placed Douglas Dickson, Keith Ryder, Roy Barker and Graham Spalding and third placed Peter Harrington, Andy Birch, Alan Crofts and Wendy Greaves after both teams scored 80 points.

Forum’s yearlong Claret Jug League is also nearing its end, and with just three qualifying events left the top players are: Wendy Greaves, 165 points Phil Elam, 155 points Dave Greaves, 154 points Fran Elam, 150 points Peter Tinsley, 118 points Douglas Dickson, 102 points Forum’s upcoming fixtures are: September 11, Stableford at Lorca, September 25, Society Championship first Round at Aguilon and October 9, Society Championship Final Round at Aguilon.
