La Vuelta promotion reaches TV millions

By Buster Smith An innovative promotion by Teulada-Moraira has been seen by millions of people. The small Marina Alta resort had big ideas for the Vuelta Espa単a race when it passed through the town on Stage Nine of the

gruelling annual clash of cyclists. They had set off from Torrevieja, covering the 168.3 kilometres to Benitachell. A captive audience of millions in 190 countries saw a giant mosaic of 650 umbrellas that spelled out the name Teulada-Moraira. Below it was a large bicycle

whose wheels appeared to be turning in a stunt that was broadcast worldwide by the RTVE helicopter following the race. The world famous event began on Saturday August 22 in Marbella and will finish on Sunday September 13 in Alcala de Henares (Madrid).

North-south divide in diesel prices THE price of crude oil has fallen by 13 per cent since January and as a result 1,305 Spanish service stations are now selling diesel fuel at less than €1 per litre.

The majority are in northern Spain but the reduction is barely noticeable in Alicante Province, where only 20 petrol stations are selling at this price.

People power works for animal rights ATTITUDES in Spain are changing

PUBLIC pressure is the driving force behind positive change with regard to animal welfare in Spain. There was a public outcry regarding four dogs and a puppy, chained in cages and kept inside a storage container in the Valencia countryside, said an Animal Care Treatment International Network (ACTIN) spokesman. Conditions have been improved for the animals after the owners were reported and taken to court by the organisation. ACTIN lost the case and their appeal was turned down but the owners are now providing better care for the animals, ensuring that the container is ventilated and cleaned and the temperature regulated. They are providing sufficient food and drink for the animals, which

Activities for all the family DENIA has released details of its new schedule of events for the forthcoming year, which includes activities for the whole family. The town hall wants to make the municipality a family-friendly location and has added theatre, music, dance and cinema to its new edition of scheduled activities. In total there are 36 choices including theatre, film, music and outdoor excursions plus guided visits to prominent places of interest around the town and local area. It received 35 per cent more visitors in July than the same time in 2014, said the town’s mayor, Diana Morant. Statistics indicate that Gandia had almost 190,000 visitors in July alone, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).There was a significant increase in international tourism, particularly from France. Morant expressed satisfaction with these figures, but stressed that there was work still to be done. However opposition parties, in particular the Partido Popular (PP), are highly critical of the mayor’s claims and

Although more tourists visited the town they are spending and consuming less in bars, restaurants and related services. Cancelling fiestas during the peak summer months is

believed to be a contributing factor. Increased hotel occupancy does not necessarily mean increased tourism, said Soler and Asemthsa. The good July turnout was due to the fact that there were a number of national and international fairs, and problems will more than likely be seen and felt next summer, in a knock-on effect by current town hall policies.

In response to the criticism, the mayor stressed that due to the current economic situation they were unable to provide sufficient funding for the fiestas, and had instead turned to the private sector for co-operation and for possible solutions. She has also asked hotels in the area to conduct an internal analysis in an attempt to discover the reasons why tourists are spending less.

Benidorm reopens municipal pool after bug alert THE Palau d’Esports L’Illa de Benidorm has reopened its municipal swimming pool after it was closed due the detection of pathogenic microorganisms. The Department of Health closed the pool down last Monday, August 24, as a precautionary measure and in order for it to be cleaned and disinfected after tests confirmed the presence of the bug. The microorgansim is not known to cause any health issues but mandatory safety standards dictate that the pool be closed, emptied and thoroughly inspected before it can be reopened. The analytical results taken last Thursday have confirmed that the microbiological parameters are zero that there is no trace of the pathogens and that chlorine levels are also suitable. Hence, the Department of Health has instructed that the pool can reopen on Saturday and will continue with its normal schedule.

A toy from Denia’s past comes home DENIA Town Hall has retrieved a 1970s’ pedal car made by local manufacturer Juguetes Sauquillo. The car was the star of Spain’s 1970 Toy Fair and was spotted by Josep A Gisbert Santonja, Director of Denia’s Ethnology Museum, in a Lleida antiques shop. It came from a Verdu (Lleida) toy museum whose collection was sold to local antique dealers when it closed. The model called ‘Sport’ - a deliberately retro model even in the 70s - has now been acquired by the town hall and will be on display at the Ethnology Museum in December. Sauquillo was linked from the beginning of the 20th century with the Denia toy industry and started out making wooden seesaws and swings, explained Gisbert. It appeared on the 1914 register of local industries but was active at least 10 years earlier, he said. After the Civil War, the factory reopened, making top-of-the range toys, and was a presence at regional and national toy fairs until it ceased production, Gisbert added.

Too dry for safety RESIDENTS have criticised Alicante City’s dry Benacantil and Serra Grossa wooded areas. “If they were watered, it wasn’t enough,” said Mateo Pinheiro, spokesman for the Pla residents association, which warned the council more than two weeks ago that the tinderdry trees were a fire risk. “We are in permanent contact with the fire brigade precisely to deal with any threatened outbreak,” said Environment Councillor Victor Dominguez, who confirmed that both areas had indeed been watered.

Fuss over Vegan Fest adverts By Linda Hall THE ‘Vegan Fest’ due to take place in Alicante City on October 3 and 4 is stirring up controversy. Vegans erase all animal products from their lives, and publicity for the October event has succeeded in offending women’s groups, men and the Catalans into the bargain. “All women are foxes,” it proclaims in Spanish, substituting the word with a picture of a fox. Few English-speaking women would be upset to be described as ‘foxy’ but in Spanish it has always meant a woman who charges for her favours. “All Catalans are rats,” is illustrated with a rat - a symbol of stinginess to the Spanish - in an allusion to the Catalans’ proverbial meanness. Neither are males let off lightly and pigs are brought into their particular picture. Alicante’s mayor tweeted that he would demand the images’ removal although the provocative phrases are meant less to offend women, men or the Catalans than draw attention to the use of animals by humans. “The language is bad, but the

Work slows on blackspot bypass THE planned motorway stretch between Villena and Fuente de la Higuera is unlikely to be finished this year. Completing this 12.5-kilometre detour off the future A-33 Valencia-Murcia motorway was a Ministry of Public Works’ priority. Instead precedence was given to opening the Fuente de la Higuera ring-road to traffic, the ministry explained. The by-pass was, and still is, considered vital because of the number of accidents on the N-344 main road between Villena and Fuentre de la Higuera. It has only one lane in each direction, dangerous curves and numerous gradients but is used daily by hundreds of heavy lorries covering the Valencia-Murcia route.

The previous council’s plans did not comply with heritage laws, the Generalitat said. This news came as a blow to city hall because tenders for the €600,000 project were classified and the contract about to be awarded for €438,000, municipal sources revealed. Former Alicante mayor Miguel Valor committed city hall to a project that lacked an essential culture department report, the same sources said. This was essential before the contract could be put out to tender. Work due to start in October included repairing the dome that tops the baroque building as well as its balconies, façade and leaking roof.

A SAN VICENTE initiative would catalogue empty homes, generate social housing and increase town hall funds. Manuel Martinez, spokesman for the PSOE party on the local council, suggested that the town hall ask the banks to list all empty or repossessed homes in their possession. These would then be included amongst the properties paying IBI rates and other municipal taxes unless the properties were made available for social housing at affordable rentals for low-income families. At present, owing to a legal loophole the banks pay neither IBI rates nor other local taxes on such properties, Martinez pointed out. “We hope this proposal will be well-received by other parties on the council because we all share the common denominator of assisting people and families affected by the economic crisis,” he said.

Lost and found at Alicante-Elche airport PUSHCHAIRS, funeral ashes and false teeth... By Linda Hall APPROXIMATELY 6,400 mislaid items found at Alicante-Elche Airport last year are waiting to be reunited with their owners. Two Local Police officers deal with lost property, first checking each item to see if its owner can be identified. These are then labelled and entered on a computer so that they can be easily located if reclaimed. Probably only 20 per cent of the items in the airport’s four storerooms will be reclaimed, although cuddly toys are amongst the most frequently-retrieved objects, the police officers said. Hundreds of belts and pairs of spectacles forgotten after passing through the metal detectors reach the lost property office where the shelves are full of phones, tablets and laptops. Pushchairs, false teeth, hearing aids and an electric oven have also been found, together with an undertaker’s urn containing a loved one’s ashes.

AIRPORT: An easy place to lose things. The 2014 items will be kept for two years, after which those found by airport staff are sent to a charity. Anything handed in by the public becomes their property two years later.

This includes cash and it is only a couple of weeks since a delighted man walked out of the airport with €12,000 which he found and took to the lost property office two years ago.

Paramedics on Alicante Province beaches have been attending to an average of five people a day or 15 at most who sought help after they were stung. Then, just as the summer was coming to an end

The jellyfish warning flag had to be run up for the first time and 47 people were stung badly enough to need to go to the beach first-aid post for assistance. Reboot to develop project MORE than six years after work stopped, the 1,500home La Albufereta development is to restart. The promoter informed Alicante city hall that he has overcome the bankruptcy that halted the project. The three-party alliance controlling city hall is unlikely to raise objections and will give the project the go-ahead. City hall’s Urban Development councillor Miguel Angel Pavon is in favour of restarting the development and transforming the now desolate and unsightly area. There is a downside for city hall because a wall of buildings between 10 and12 storeys will separate the Serra Grossa and the sea. HEALTHY: Not all Elche palms have been attacked. By Linda Hall THE red weevil plague has destroyed approximately 50,000 palm trees each year in Elche since 2013. The city’s famous palm forest is a Unesco world heritage site but this status has not provided protection against the weevils. First detected in 1995 they arrived via imported palms and have attacked trees along the Mediterranean coast. It was necessary to fell 355 palms in the Palmeral Historico during the first six months of the year and another 66 were removed from the city’s streets.

These are worrying figues, said acting mayor and Parks and Gardens councillor Antonio Garcia who, assisted by specialists, is creating a system to detect and prevent the weevil infestations. This should be ready by October, Garcia revealed. “As well as compiling a census of the city’s palms we must ensure that it is kept up to date and pinpoints trouble spots where we can focus efforts to eradicate the weevils.” City hall will always opt to use biological methods, Garcia added, but would not hesitate to introduce aggressive measures when necessary.

Good crop expected for renowned Alicante apples

LA SARGA hopes to pick and market one million kilos of apples this year. This outlying district of Jijona, located in the mountains behind the Costa Blanca and a renowned apple-growing area, has had two years of disappointing harvests. This year promises to be different and growers are looking forward to good quality fruit and a €600,000 turnover. The ripening apples were damaged by a violent hailstorm in 2013 and despite drip irrigation, two years of drought produced small fruit and reduced production by 20 per cent in 2014. Although there has been no let-up in the drought, more rain fell in inland mountain areas and came at the right time for La Sarga, during the first six months of the year. One million kilos sounds like a great deal of fruit but this is a relatively small harvest and the La Sarga apples will go on sale mainly inside Alicante Province.

AGENCY captivated by six-year-old’s mischievous charm by Linda Hall ANITA and Jason Killick holidayed recently in Javea. They were there with their four children Hannah, 15, Nathan, 12, six-year-old Louis, and Hayden, who is 14 months old. Louis is no more special than his sister or brothers except in one respect. He recently took part in a catwalk show in London, his proud parents told the Euro Weekly News (EWN). The fact that he has Down’s Syndrome is important only because this prompted Anita to call on more modelling agencies to recruit more disabled children. “That extra chromosome means nothing,” she said.

Anita was put in touch with Models of Diversity agency who are pioneers in introducing a less restricted variety of models to the fashion industry. The agency’s founder Angel Sinclair was captivated by Louis’s mischievous charm and soon chose him for the runway, Anita explained. “This is our first visit to Javea,” Jason Killick told EWN. “In the past we have holidayed in Cyprus but when our youngest was born last year we decided it was time for a change.” With relatives in Javea and Moraira, the Marina Alta was a natural choice for the family, and they rented a villa near El Tosalet.

Josep Gisbert, Director of Denia’s Archaeological Museum, on a visit to the Moorish remains at El Forti. From there they went to the town hall where she was shown the first century AD inscription to Titus Junius Severus, a Denia-born Roman who was a prefect of the Dalmatae cohort and later tribune of the VII Gemina legion. This was of particular interest

to Torres, since the Gemina troops were stationed in Chester (England), although their base was in Leon. Gisbert also explained that a text by an Arab historian who lived between 1172 and 1248 related how the Holy Grail was taken from Jerusalem to Denia, with the intention of presenting it to King Fernando of Leon in the mid-11th century.

A BELGIAN-AMERICAN fugitive wanted in connection with the trafficking of blood diamonds was arrested at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport on Friday (August 28). He was picked up by National Police officers under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Belgian authorities. The 64-year-old businessman is the first person to be arrested on suspicion of trading blood diamonds - illegal gems used to finance the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s, in which more than 50,000 people died. He is accused of using slave labour to mine for diamonds in Sierra Leone, then of trafficking the stones to Liberia, where the former president Charles Taylor, now in jail for his role in war crimes in the conflict, used them to fund a rebel army back in Sierra Leone.

IT has been a game of two halves for the Great British Pound (GBP) versus the Euro in August. GBP started the month sitting nicely at 1.40 and on the back of positive UK inflation feedback GBP managed to squeeze higher to 1.43. At the time, the thought process was that higher inflation would shorten the time-span to a UK interest rate rise. The Pound rallied and the Euro was pushed lower. In addition there was expectation that the US would look to raise interest rates this year and that this could be as soon as September. This allowed USD strength against the Euro and in turn helped the Pound to maintain good levels against the Euro. Fast forward to the 26th August and the Pound was down 4 per cent from the highs of the month.

RALLY: Fallout in equities has supported the Euro in the latter half of August. So what happened? The move is directly related to the bloodbath in Chinese equity markets which has in turn tripped into global equity and FX markets. The People’s Bank of China has

responded to the sharp sell-off in equities and the weaker growth feedback by cutting interest rates and weakening the value of the CNY. Whether this sell-off will stabilise or catalyse is a key

question. For FX markets the response has been to buy the Euro and the Japanese Yen on any fallout in equities and this has supported the Euro rally in the latter half of August. Feedback from Germany was positive with GDP rising and the IFO survey posting a good reading. In particular the Euro has rallied against the USD and this is due to a much lower chance that the Federal Reserve will move on interest rates in the near term given the fallout from China. The Euro has rallied a massive six cents against the USD in the latter half of August. So what can we expect moving forward? Well, the situation in China is far from clear and all eyes will be on the People’s Bank and its ability to stabilise the markets. A further sell-off could help the Euro, whereas a recovery from the lows should see the Euro shed some of its gains. Looking outside of the stock market turmoil and focusing on the central banks we are likely to see the US delay a rate hike until next year and similarly the UK may also delay their lift-off. This should favour the Euro in the short term.

Strike call threat to airports IN an effort to ensure that the increase in passenger numbers to and from Spain is 2015 continues into next year, the government has announced that it will be giving airports a number of incentives with the hope and expectation of opening new routes to increase passenger footfall even more. However, it’s one step forward and one step back - just after the Malaga baggage handlers strike was called off - as three unions, CCCO, UGT and USO, have called for stoppages at Menzies Aviation Ibérica, which manages the check-in services at various airports. Many of the low-cost airlines including some from UK are likely to be affected with the first strike due to take place on September 4 at Madrid Barajas. If no agreement is reached, then the strikes will escalate and will include Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Mallorca.

FANCY a career in acting but too hard to get into? Try going into business instead. It is much the same thing. In business, when dealing with clients, it is your alter ego that will do much of the work for you. In business for 25 years, I had little choice but to wing it. During that quarter of a century, I lived on my wits and I survived. Business, like many other careers, is a broad forum. My forte appeared to be in selling. However, I was never a one-man-band. I was also a retailer, publisher, door-knocker and business doctor. Common sense suggests that popular theatre artistes can’t always be full of sparkle. Like the rest of us they too have their bad hair days. An impending performance must be the last thing they need. The show must go on and so must selling when your income depends on it.

MUCH THE SAME: A career on stage or in business.

Every salesperson knows the feeling: exhausted, dispirited, it is late and you have one more appointment. You know you’re going to be on ‘stage’ for at least two hours, maybe longer. If you are the kind of person who wears his heart on his sleeve then selling is not for you. How often my shoulders sagged when, after knocking, I waited for the door to open. As the door opened my face lit up. Immediately filled with passion I warmly greeted my client. With boundless enthusiasm I learned all about his trade. To my credit I must say I did so with genuine interest. It was more important to me that he does well than I succeed. I think this came across and it paid dividends. Although I had pitched the benefits of my service more times than Phantom of the Opera runs, I presented my service with evangelistic enthusiasm. This paid well, too. My advice is, if you can sell, choose a product or service you genuinely believe in. If you don’t believe what your tongue says, then your client won’t either.

Have the confidence to say: “Show me the money because I’m worth it” Loose change Jane Plunkett A look at finance for females A LOT of news has been whirling around recently about the gender pay gap, highlighting how women often receive salaries that are not equal to those of men doing the same job. Female bosses work for free 100 minutes a day because they earn 22 per cent less than male managers, according to a new study from the UK. So if you tot this up, it adds up to 57 days of ‘free’ work a year. Many reasons have been quoted as to why women are not getting their fair share, and these reasons include old-fashioned sexism and a general sense that a woman’s work is not as worthy as a man’s. But sometimes a woman can be the instrument of her own downfall, too. For example,

research shows us that women in general are not as likely to put themselves forward for a promotion or ask for

a pay rise, for the simple reason that they’re more likely to work part-time, freelance or on flexible contracts,

which means asking for what they want often has to be balanced with job security. Because a woman might have secured a job that allows her to attend to her family at the same time, she often feels that she is not entitled to rock the boat and ask for better pay or a promotion. This type of thinking does not help to secure a bright future for any female in the workplace. It ultimately also has to do with confidence and a value of self-worth. For example, I have a professional friend who is frequently asked to speak at events. She often does so and when she is told there is no pay for speaking, just ‘exposure’, she still humbly agrees. But if the event is charging people to enter, the least they can do is pay a fee to their speakers for all the time and preparation needed to speak at the event. If you want other people to respect your time, remember you first have to respect it yourself.

OTHERS THINK IT MORE than three years ago, when ISIS was on the march, it struck me that such was the speed and success of their early onslaughts, their troops and armaments had to be seriously stretched and spread out. To me it was obvious that, at that point they were not only highly dangerous, but also at their most vulnerable. Subsequently I suggested that before they had time to organise and regroup they should immediately be hit with all the air power the allies could muster. Well the pussy cats in power did precisely nothing. ISIS is now so ‘dug in’ it will take two things to shift them. One is a vast international ground force, armed with the very latest in technology and equipment (including limited nuclear) along with an unrelenting bombardment from the air. Alternatively, engage them in a round-the-table IRA style ‘negotiation’. Which brings me to another piece I wrote at around the same time. In it I suggested we

withdraw all our forces from the Middle East and use them to strengthen our own borders. We then wait for the victors to emerge (not necessarily ISIS) and then open negotiations.

These people are not silly. Despite their Jihadist intentions they know that sooner or later they are going to have to deal with the West (someone has to buy their oil). Meanwhile, to accommodate the large numbers fleeing the war zones, we build large holding camps across Europe. These camps should offer fair accommodation, medical facilities and a department similar to a citizens’ advice bureau advising and issuing permits for refugees on how to work and reside legally in the countries allocated. Without our interference there would be no excuse for terrorist attacks on our home soil and sooner or later, without more loss of allied lives, peace should finally prevail. Dream on, Leapy. Forced to resign his 18-year-long tenure as Prime Minister of the Lilliputian State of Luxemburg he was pursued on fraud charges. He milked national economies by creating offshore tax benefits for over 200 multinational conglomerates. His apparent accomplice, Jyrki Katainen, is Finland’s former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. An accomplished chef he is likely to be best remembered for cooking the books. After destroying Finland’s economy, he was driven out of town by the electorate. No problem, he was appointed EU Minister of Finance. Their formula for a successful economy works like this: €1goes in and €15 comes out. The EU investment plan is to create from thin air an €8 billion guarantee which then becomes €21 billion in money. This is multiplied 15-fold. Good, we are all rich. Don’t try this at home. Mr Juncker never denied that compromises and deals worked out in EU meetings need be protected from public scrutiny, by lies if necessary. “When it becomes serious, you have to lie,” he said.

We all have our opinions about Europe and whilst there are people who will make a judgement based on sound logic and reason, I believe that the majority will make their decision based on the following criteria: 1) What the newspapers tell them.

UK Announces New Measures Against Offshore Tax Evasion The UK government is toughening its stance on offshore tax evasion, further strengthening the deterrents and penalties. It has warned that criminal investigation and sanctions will play an increasingly prominent role in HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC) response to such tax evasion. In July HMRC published four consultations proposing tough new measures. These cover: • A new simpler criminal offence to make it easier to prosecute offshore evaders. • Tougher financial penalties for offshore evaders, including the possibility of a penalty based on the value of the asset on which tax was evaded and wider public naming of offshore evaders. • A new penalty regime for those who enable tax evasion. • A new criminal offence for corporations that fail to take adequate steps to prevent the facilitation of tax evasion by their agents. David Gauke, financial secretary to the Treasury, warned: “These proposals

When you add the new sanctions, “there is nowhere left to hide for offshore tax evaders”, he said.

One of the proposals is to introduce a strict liability offence for offshore tax evasion. Currently, a taxpayer can only be found guilty of a criminal offence if HMRC can prove that their failure to declare income or gains was deliberate. In future, if the proposal goes ahead, HMRC will no longer have to prove that it was deliberate. The failure to declare will be sufficient in itself. The maximum penalty will be a six month prison sentence. It will be an offence if a taxpayer does not notify HMRC that they are chargeable to income tax or capital gains tax in respect of offshore income, assets or activities, or if they fail to submit a tax return or include such income and gains on their return. The proposal is for the offence to

apply to all offshore income and gains, and not just to underdeclared investment returns. However, it will only apply where the amount of unpaid tax exceeds £5,000. Previously, the strict liability offence was only going to apply to income and gains hidden in countries which have not signed up for Common Reporting Standard (CRS). It will now apply to all territories. Although the consultation document says that there will be “effective safeguards” to make sure that those who make every effort to pay taxes correctly are not caught by the offence, tax practitioners are concerned that people who make genuine mistakes could be charged. The consultation will run from 16th July to 8th October. HMRC wants to hear from individuals with

offshore income and assets, tax practitioners, representative bodies and other interested parties. No start date for new offence has been announced so far, though the consultation document does say it will not be retrospective. This is the latest in the UK’s crackdown on offshore tax evasion. Over recent years HMRC has netted over £2 billion from its efforts, and is aiming to increase this by £5 billion. It has reminded taxpayers that the existing disclosure facilities will close at the end of this year, to be replaced by a new final tougher worldwide facility in advance of CRS data exchanges from 2017. FLAT BATTERY: Better to charge it slowly. FINDING out you have a flat battery as you turn the key in the ignition is one of the most inconvenient, yet common occurrence for drivers. The life expectancy of your car battery is typically four to six years. Several factors determine how long your battery will last such as weather conditions, vehicle type and driving habits. Why is my battery flat? Make sure to check all the electrical connections and ensure that the battery is kept clean and dry. If corrosion has built up over time, baking soda in a water solution and an old toothbrush is ideal to clean the battery terminals, just make sure to remove the negative terminal first and when reconnecting, put the positive terminal on first. Cold weather makes it more difficult for an already weakened battery to hold its charge. Storing your car in a garage during spells of cold weather will help make it easier to charge.

Charging your battery The type of charger you own is important in the safety of charging your vehicle’s battery. It is safer and better for your battery to opt for the slow charging method. A fast charge increases the potential of overcharging your battery and can create permanent damage. Replacement and recycling Your local garage or recycling centre will take your old car battery, usually for a small fee, as it is illegal to dispose of your car battery in the usual way with household waste due to its toxic nature. If it is still in reasonable condition, it may be reconditioned for use or its components melted down for use in the future. Keeping your car battery fully charged means your battery will have a longer lifespan and use energy more efficiency. Remember, the first time your car doesn’t start straight away, it is a warning that you will need to replace your battery.

Are dash-cams legal in Spain? I have been driving a UK registered car but they are clamping down, so I have decided to buy a new Spanish car. I have 30 years of no claims discount on my insurance. In order to keep my premiums low, I am considering buying a dash cam but I wonder if it is worth the investment. The U n f o r t u n a t e l y, the short answer is no. EVERYONE who knows me will agree I have a great sense of humour and I’m pretty good with some witty one liners… but apart from that I am a serial complainer! I can make Victor Meldrew look like a total amateur when it comes to having a moan, so when I was asked to write a few words about some of the things that really tick me off I jumped at the opportunity. I am going to start with the selfish, lazy, inconsiderate, ignorant, very healthy, youngish toerags that park in disabled bays and do not have a blue badge. I am registered disabled and have to use a wheelchair to do any kind of shopping. The joke is if you say anything to these idiots, who only think of themselves and don’t realise how hard it is to get a wheelchair out of a car in a normal space, they all look at you like “so what?”. The best is “I’m only going to be five minutes.” I have also had “I’ve got a bad leg.” Ladies - having a baby is not a disability. Just

Flash gits having a big Merc, BMW or large four wheel drive - this is also not a disability and just because the space is bigger and it might stop someone touching your car door - DON’T PARK THERE!. In the street your car will be towed. In store car parks it’s just common sense. The reason the spaces are near the entrance is because disabled people need a bit of help. I hope that those of you that park there never ever have a real reason to do so, but until then please think before you park of the problems you are causing. By the way, if you still decide to park don’t be surprised if you find a very sticky note on your windscreen saying ‘BEING A SELFISH INCONSIDERATE IDIOT IS NOT A DISABILTY.’

A tremendous response to a family medical emergency I HAVE had family over on holiday. A friend of my granddaughter was taken ill on August 25 after 11pm and because of her condition I had to call for an ambulance. The whole service from then was fantastic, within 10 minutes an ambulance arrived with three medical personnel. They stabilised the young girl and called for a second ambulance. This arrived again within minutes; she was taken to Torrevieja Hospital. There she was promptly seen by the hospital staff and she remained overnight for observation and then allowed home. I would like to thank all the personnel including the 112 operator, the ambulance crew, as well as all at the hospital for the tremendous service. BB, Torrevieja (Alicante)

Great concert LAST night, like many others, I went to a free concert at the Rosario Gardens in Casares to see Madeline Bell, and what an amazing night we had! She is just an incredible singer – her beautiful clothes, her constant interaction with the audience and most of all the fabulous voice. She is just full of life and gives out the ‘feel good’ factor. We all had a great evening. Her accompanying chap David on the keyboard was also great. She dedicated her evening to ‘all the people we have lost’ adding a tribute to Cilla. Roof scam

I QUITE agree with Colin Bird on a lack of politeness nowadays. How much effort could it be to return a nod in exchange for a door held open? And why, oh why, do so many Spaniards insist on shoving their way on to trains before people have finished exiting? It’s worse than the London Underground for rudeness at times. I was convinced when the animal charities got involved and it was printed in the Euro Weekly News on 13th September 2013 that something would at last be done for these two stressed and unhappy elephants. A man brings them out on market days only so the tourists can take pictures and entice them to the circus just for money. dangers of shopping at Amazon. es. I have spent many, many euros with Amazon in Spain but their latest treatment of me has put me off for life. I purchased an electronic machine from them which came with instructions in Spanish and I can appreciate that fact, but when I asked if the instructions could be supplied in English, I was harangued by a very rude, unrefined vendor. Since then Amazon have refused to take the item back and have washed their hands of the affair. Thinking that perhaps it was a necessary repair after a high wind last week I checked three of my five roofs, which were easily accessible, and found all were in good condition. Two hours later, on completion of my neighbours’ job , the workman came to me and assured me that he had noticed that at least one of the roofs I had not been able to check was in need of urgent attention. He offered to go onto the roof, take photographs, and quote me a price for the repair. He brought a ladder, hauled his 100kg body onto one of the three checked roofs, and I then heard tiles being moved as he scrambled around. When I climbed his ladder, I found that a number of the tiles on the three roofs I had previously checked as being in good condition had been pulled away and some had even been inverted. I ordered him to leave immediately and, using my own ladder, I found a total of 21 tiles had been disturbed on the three roofs and a further 10 on the other two unchecked roofs. Back to school health tips for those sleepy children

SOME cancers grow again after treatment SCIENTISTS have come up with a blood test to detect the return of cancers which have grown again after treatment. The researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research in London carried out a trial on 55 female cancer patients who were are high risk of relapsing due to the size of their tumour and discovered 12 cancers out of the

15 women who had relapsed. By analysing the mutated DNA of the tumour, they were able to search the blood for the same mutations, thereby finding cancers which they would not normally have been able to detect. Of the group, 15 patients relapsed and the blood test was able to advise 12 of them. The

other three all had cancers which had spread to the brain. While the trial detected traces of breast cancer eight months earlier than doctors would normally have been able to discover it, it is likely to be a long time before such a test is readily available. While blood analysis is cheap to do, the expense of analysing the DNA of cancerous is significantly more and while early detection of cancer is crucial in improving the chances of survival of patients through early treatment, it is not an easy process. Dr Nick Peel from Cancer Research UK warns that “There is some way before this could be developed into a test that doctors could use routinely, and doing so is never simple.”

LACK OF SLEEP: Can cause poor academic performance. AS the children head off back to school after the long, hot summer, there are a number of tips to bear in mind to help them get back into the routine before they start back. Of course the most difficult adjustment is always sleep, especially for

teenagers, since they often have a lot more late nights and lie-ins during the summer holidays. Researchers at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital have found that “a lack of sleep can cause poor academic performance due to poor concentration, behavioural

issues due to irritability, physical symptoms like fatigue and headaches, or mental issues like depression.” To deal with this, doctors suggest gradually adjusting bedtime and wake-up times by 30 minutes every two to three days over a couple of weeks.

NEWS that Greece’s PM, Alexis Tsipras, called snap elections in a bid to return to power is only the latest step in a drama more like a Carry On Up the Acropolis-type farce than a Shakespearean tragedy. Let’s leave aside the question of whether the euro was flawed from the start, or whether Greece should have been allowed to join (all agreed on that answer, right?), and consider what’s happened since the crisis erupted. The Greeks (individually and governmentally) ended up in this mess by stubbornly, for years, living beyond their means, supported by the

EU élite who, for political reasons, continued bankrolling them until (as usual) the bubble burst. The Greek electorate seemingly thought the overspending could continue ad in-

finitum. A view not shared by their creditors, given there’s no prospect of Greece ever eliminating their increasing debt (unless perhaps a huge gold mine’s discovered, and frantic

fracking begins, under the Acropolis). Tsipras promised them the earth, Marxist moon and stars (generous pensions, low levels of VAT, high levels of tax avoidance) and they bought it. At the time of writing (but, hey, this is Greece. Anything’s still possible!), he’s turned the poker game into a round of Russian roulette by calling a referendum on the bailout proposals. Interestingly, the British electorate faced a similar choice in May, but decided to stick with the party that had taken them out of fiscal bondage. The Greeks had a similar choice (their then government slowly turning things round), but they chose the easier path of false promises putting the lunatics in charge of the asylum. Now all must suffer for their reckless choice. And Mr Tsipras, how can he lose?

Unconstrained by past policies he advocated to oppose austerity and achieve debt write-downs, he’s still purring in front of the foreign cameras and striding the corridors of power like a Colossus, adored in Athens like a latter-day Achilles for taking on the Titans of Europe. So, what’s the betting Greece defaults yet again if Tsipras wins a new majority and we go through the whole we-want-EU-money-but-without-any-austerity process again - a saga increasingly like Groundhog Day or DFS summer sales? Looks as if this new bail-out could be derailed before it’s even begun. Ladies luncheon club of Moraira for expats MEMBERSHIP is not restricted to ladies and non-members are always welcome THE LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB of Moraira meets on the first Thursday of the month from September to June mainly at Restaurante Los Leones, Solpark, Moraira and has speakers or demonstrators on topical interests. We organise coach trips in November and January to other areas of Spain. Twice a year, gentlemen are invited to join us - if they so wish - in September and February when we have a special St Valentine’s date, in the Jalon Valley when usually the almond blossom is at its best. The club was formed in 1986 by a small group of English-speaking expatriate ladies as a support group when there were very few ‘home comforts’ available and when

Nine acts confirmed for charity event EVENING in aid of Natalie and her family By Buster Smith AFTER SUFFERING a number of seizures in February 2015, 31-year-old Natalie Cash was diagnosed with a low grade glioma on the left frontal lobe. Over the next six weeks the seizures became more frequent so she was given another MIR scan which showed that the tumour had turned aggressive to a grade four (one of the highest grades) and needed to be removed. This was done at the beginning of April this year. They managed to remove about 90 per cent of the tumour. Since her operation she has gone through six weeks of intense radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which she has had to have every day. Although she cannot have more radiotherapy she is still undergoing chemotherapy for the next six months. Natalie and her husband Jimmy have two young boys, nineyear-old Jon James and seven-year old-Stephen. They are struggling financially since Natalie can no longer work, while Jimmy has gone part time to take her to hospital every day and help look

after the children. While the remainder of the tumour is treatable it is not curable due to the location of it in the brain. Natalie remains very positive as a naturally bubbly person. Although she has her down days, she still looks forward to enjoying good times with her boys while she is going through her treatment. The charity event is in aid of Natalie and her family and will be held on Thursday September 10 at the Why Not. There are nine different acts confirmed so far: Angela, Jo lynn as Bette Middler, Jolene, Lizzy G, Joanne Crowle, John-Paul (Olly Murs), Troy, Alisha (Kelly Clarkson) Stuart Farrell as Elvis. ANTHROPOMORPHISM is the word that is used when we believe dogs have the same feelings and emotions as humans and that they understand our language. A mistaken belief, of course. Dogs are not small, fur-clad human beings. They are canines. True, they are man’s best friend because their natural instincts and hierarchical society blend into our own, and they show loyalty and devotion to the hand that feeds them. This bonding between man and dog happened thousands of years ago when both man and wolf lived similar nomadic lives as hunters roaming the land. The dog’s adaptation to our way of life was accelerated by man using selective breeding to develop the most desirable features, first to work for us and then as pets. There remain, of course, fundamental differences between us and our dogs: dogs live totally in the present moment. They do not worry about the past nor dream about the

MAN’S BEST FRIEND: But a dog is not a fur-clad human being. future. They are not endowed with imagination or feel grief, hate, jealousy or greed. They do have a high sensory ability which is often mistaken for a kind of sixth sense. They will understand that certain words like sit, stay, down require the right reaction if they are to be rewarded with a tit-bit or praise. They will understand whether your tone of voice and facial expressions are good or bad when you are talking to them, but they will not understand longer phrases.

We often attribute human emotions to dogs when, in fact, they are reacting instinctively. We assume our dog is happy to see us when we return home and it looks pleased and wags its tail. All it is doing is reacting in the same way a wolf puppy reacts when the pack returns from a hunt. So please do not attribute dogs with human emotions. Try, instead, to understand their simple canine minds, which are untroubled by so many of our emotions.

Taking care of exotic pets THE more unusual of animals kept as pets are known as nondomestics or exotics. Examples include snakes, terrapins, lizards, scorpions and frogs. The RSPCA have concerns about the welfare of these animals when kept as pets, due to how difficult it can be to meet their needs. Exotic pet species, as wild animals in captivity, have the same needs as they do in the wild, linked to a specialist environment, diet or behaviour. It can be challenging to look after them properly. The RSPCA are opposed to the trade in wild-caught animals. Some exotic species, such as primates, should never be kept as pets as they have complex needs that can’t be met in a home environment. We would urge anyone considering an exotic pet to find

out as much as possible about the animal’s needs and whether it is a realistic pet for you. Consider: How long the animal will live and how large it will grow. What it eats and how much. What environment the animal needs. Many exotics require a carefully-controlled environment, or they may become sick and even die. The environment must allow for natural behaviour like burrowing, climbing or basking. Size of enclosure - this is likely to increase as the animal grows! Should the animal be kept alone or with others? Will it be active at night or during the day? Is there an exotics vet nearby who can treat the animal if it becomes sick?

Belgians love Spain - it’s official! BELGIAN NEWSPAPER La Libre Belgique (Free Belgium) has published an article stating that every day no less than nine Spanish properties are sold to Belgians. Their information is based on reports of property transactions recorded by Spanish notaries. Foreigners purchased 13 per cent of all properties sold in Spain in 2014 and Belgium came a creditable fourth in the list after Germany, France and number one Britain. Russia can be spotted at a rather lowly sixth position. For many years the distinctive bright red number plates of Belgian registered cars could be seen all over Spain, but at the end of 2010 and in line with EU requirements, the letters and numbers changed to a much deeper red on white. With the steady commitment of those from Belgium to the Spanish property market, the number of their cars on the roads can only continue to increase.

Watch out for housing scams CON MAN damages perfectly intact roofs By Community Reporter A REPORT concerning a roofing scam has been received from Benitachell which unfortunately falls into the same category as improper checking of gas connections and cheap asphalt. It appears that a person, thought to be of German origin and driving a Mercedes car, called on a couple in Valle de Portet advising that he was in the area working on roofs and had spotted that they had some loose tiles. It was agreed that he should return with a ladder and undertake what should have been simple repairs. But in the event it appears that the man actually damaged the perfectly intact roof and then tried to charge an exorbitant sum for his so-called work.

The angry couple were alert enough to refuse to pay and sent him on his way, but are now left facing a bill to repair the damage that he caused. It is clearly very important that great care is taken when approached by people who claim to be working in the area and offering to assist with a previous unknown problem. Always ask for a quote and if an offer seems too good to be true, then it probably is!

According to the latest data by the General Council of Notaries, the sale of homes in Spain jumped by 19.4 per cent in J u n e 2 0 1 5 , c o mp are d to th e s ame month the previous year, reaching a total of 37,641 sales transactions. The June 2015 data marks the fourth consecutive month of increases in home sales transactions, following those of March (+12.3 per cent), April (+1.9) and May (+8.5). Apartment sales increased by 20.8 per cent, driven by transactions on secondhand apartments, which rose by 25.2 per cent , wh i l e t h e t r an s ac tio n s o n n ew apartments increased by 2.2 per cent. In add i t i o n , sa l e s o f in d iv id u al family home s i n c r e a se d b y 1 4 . 5 p e r ce n t in June, compared with June 2014. The latest data, according to the no-

taries, shows an overall stabilisation of the Spanish real estate market, and mortgage loans for home purchases also increased in June, by 31.8 per cent, with 16,002 loans authorised. Benitachell Bowls Club Montgo at LOFTUS competition started in memory of early members THE Loftus competition was started in memory of Beryl and Terry Loftus who were early members of the club and whose family have donated the trophy. The competition is open to BBC members who have been bowling for less than two years. The competition is huge fun and this year there will be harmony in the Bouttell household with Angela and Dave Bouttell both winning a cup - however Angela was the overall winner!!! Oliva Nova MONTGO Golf Society played a stableford competition at Oliva Nova on Friday, August 28. The match was played in still very summery conditions with the temperature just over 30 degrees. The course continues to play pretty well considering the extreme temperatures this summer has brought and the ground staff seem to have control of the weed grass that had invaded parts of the course T h e w i n n e r o n t h e d a y, having his first good round for some time was Founder Member, Richard Morris, who scored 39 points from his 18.3 handicap.

Second and third places were decided on handicap with Brian Redfearn (12.3) in second and Russ Peters (12.7) third, both of them scoring 37 points. The nearest the pins were won by Colin Foster for the second shot on the fifth and new member, Peter Kneebone, taking the honours on the 16th. Coveted Montgo balls for two’s were won by Shaun O’Gorman and Neil Carter. The Society’s next game is at Oliva Nova on Friday September 11, for a Pairs Better Ball stableford competition, with a first tee at 8:56am.

Therefore the forthcoming Solheim Cup will be drawing a significant amount of interest from all quarters. And, just like the Ryder Cup, it pitches a European team against a US team. Each team member having qualified through

of these excellent golfers have competed at the EuroNations Cup when it was held at La Sella in the Costa Blanca. There are also two ladies who will be generating a lot of support from Spain, as the team includes Azahara Munoz from Malaga and Carlotta Ciganda from Pamplona. The pressure is ON! This year there is even more pressure on both teams for quite different reasons. Two years ago the European team defeated the US on American soil and two years previously they had won in Europe. So the hope is that they can defend their title and wrap up a third record-breaking win. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the argument, the US team will be desperate to ensure that this doesn’t happen. Adding to their own disappointment, the recent re-

sults for the US Ryder Cup teams have been dismal, to say the least, and especially the humiliating defeat referred to as the Miracle at Medinah in 2012. The US typically do not take defeat very well and there will be very strong support for the Solheim Ladies despite the fact that the location is Germany. Like the Ryder Cup the format involves pairs coming head-tohead in the first two days and then the full team in a one-to-one Grand Finale on the third day.
