No doubt it was quite a traumatic event for the boy, but some investigation shows that it isn’t on the same level as ‘Jaws’. Benidorm’s Poniente beach was closed for 45 minutes after a 10-year-boy was appar-

ently bitten by a fish. He was swimming off one of the platforms in front of the Parque de Elche when he saw the fish, which was greygreen and about 50 centimetres long. Turn to Page 2

Call for swimmers to take more care VALENCIA Community’s Lifeguards Federation has called for tougher action on careless swimmers. Thirty-two people died while in the water in the Va-

lencian Region last year compared with 30 on the roads, the federation pointed out. The public need safe swimming campaigns like those for road safety, a spokesman said.

Fortunately the bite - which left a large circle of teethmarks - turned out to be a superficial graze, and was attended to at the beach’s First Aid post. The red warning flag was removed from the flagpole three-quarters of an hour later and swimmers returned - cautiously at first - to the water. A 30-year-old woman swimming in roughly the same spot eight metres off the Poniente beach in August 2014 was less lucky. She needed medical treatment after being bitten on the leg by an unseen and unidentified fish. From the boy’s description, the fish was probably a barracuda, according to municipal sources. A photograph of his wound has been sent to the Institute of Maritime Ecology in Valencia to assist in identifying the attacker.

No holiday cover brings longer waits STAFF at health centres struggle to cope with workload By Linda Hall THE €1,074 per head allocated to Health in the Valencia Region last year was the secondlowest in Spain. Only Andalucia spent less, with an annual €907 allocation and both fall short of the €1,207 national average. Both economised this summer by not covering holidays and staff struggle to cope, as Euro Weekly News reader Katie Diez found out. With a 9.15am appointment it was 11am when she emerged as one locum dealt with patients with appointments and not-so-urgent emergencies without them. At one point he came out of his consulting room, calling for patience because his computer had crashed. “He was a sweetie, though,” Katie said, “and very competent.” She had to return next day at 9am and found the waiting area so empty that she took a photo. On emerging from the consulting room, she found a scene building up to the previous day’s chaos. “What a difference 10 minutes makes!” Katie exclaimed.

Gearing up for Gay Pride 2015 BENIDORM is preparing for a rainbow coloured festival of Gay Pride. This will be the fifth annual celebration of everything gay, lesbian, transsexual, bisexual and

transgender. The festival takes place over the weekend of September 12, 13, and14, but the fun starts from Monday 7. Benidorm has long cherished its reputation as being an open minded town where prejudice is cast aside and freedom to be yourself is applauded. Sun, fun, sea, sand and books for you to enjoy altogether BEACH libraries are now 15 years old and are used by more than 100,000 people a year By Linda Hall BENIDORM’S ‘biblioplaya’ beach libraries were pioneers for Europe and Spain. The first opened exactly 15 years ago and the three libraries are now used by more than 100,000 people a year. The Levante beach accounts for 70 per cent of readers, said Antonio Couto, director of the town’s central library and in charge of the municipal archive. Biblioplayas aim to bring readers and books together, independently of where they are at the time. They combine sun, sea, holidays and fun with reading, Couto explained, in unenclosed spaces without walls, allowing readers to re-

braries originated in 1992 but hopes were dashed when the authorities rejected the

idea: “They argued that the Coastal Laws considered it ‘illicit’ to promote reading

on the beach.” The initiative finally got off the ground in 2000 and

the libraries with their books and publications in several languages were open for six months, from Easter Week until mid-October. By the following year, demand was so great that this was extended by another two months and a third library, opened in La Cala for the months of July and August. Benidorm’s brainchild has now reached other resorts throughout Spain and abroad. A delegation from Norrtalje (Sweden) visited Benidorm in 2004 to see the libraries for themselves. Impressed, they installed a similar service on their own beaches and, in honour of Benidorm, called them Biblioplayas.

Brains as well as beauty for the best looking man ARCHITECTURE student and a sports fan By Linda Hall THE best-looking man in Spain lives in Oliva. His name is Daniel Barreres and he recently won the Mr España Internacional title. He will now go on to represent Spain in the Mr World competition in Manila (Philippines) next November. Daniel is 22 and is studying architecture at the Universidad Politecnica in Valencia City. He speaks Spanish and Valenciano and “defends himself” in English and Filipino as his mother comes from the Philippines. His hobbies include films and reading: “As I’m studying architecture I read quite a lot about it, as I find it so interesting,” he said. He is also a sports fan, and practises snowboarding in winter and kite-surf in the summer.

“This is a great opportunity and I’m not going to let anyone down. I’m going to try my very best in all of the heats and every interview. I’m going to win over the jury and try to give it everything I’ve got,”

Daniel said during a reception by the Mr España Internacional organisation at Oliva town hall. He was accompanied by Alejandro Nieto Marroquin, the current Mr España Internacional, who cannot compete in

Manila because he is the father of a child. “Daniel has the qualities and capacity to win and to be an ambassador for Spain and Oliva,” said the local mayor David Gonzalez.

Rigorous state-church divide GANDIA Town Hall announced it will not subsidise religious events at Marxuquera district’s fiestas. The PSOE-Mes Gandia alliance took this decision in order to maintain the secular character of the fiestas, said Mes Gandia councillor Xavier Rodenas who also presides Marxuquera’s district council. This is the line the town hall will be adopting in similar situations, Rodenas added For the first time the fiestas organisers will meet half of the cost of events while the remainder, as on other occasions, will come from Marxuquera Council. In Ondara, the Compromis-PSOE alliance will not be officially represented at religious acts, said Mayor Zeus Serrano. This decision should not surprise anyone in a secular state like Spain, Serrano said. Councillors are free to attend on a personal basis, he explained, although they could not expect to occupy privileged positions reserved in the past for the Corporation. Denia and Altea town halls also announced they will not be officially represented at religious ceremonies.

Storm in a political teacup FEW takers for going it alone By Linda Hall A COUPLE of months in and the regional government’s PSOE-Compromis-Podemos alliance is having a tense moment. The culprit is Vicent Marza, who heads the Generalitat’s Education Department. Statements regarding Valencian nationalism and independence made almost a year ago have returned to haunt him as Opposition parties dig for dirt. Marza commented to an interviewer in September 2014 that many in the Valencia Region were convinced that the Catalan Nations – in the plural and encompassing Valencia – “are a reality not only culturally but politically.” They should be even more so in the future, Marza de-

clared: “We are national companions.” Questioned about Cataluña’s approaching referendum in November 2015, Marza predicted: “We’ll get there,” in a clear allusion to Valencian nationalism. Marza belongs to the Bloc which is the majority partner in the Compromis coalition, headed by the regional vicepresident Monica Oltra. She hastened to dissociate herself and Compromis from Marza’s views and ambitions for Valencian independence: “I do not share them and neither do Compromis or the Consell.” Oltra went on to say that everyone was free to hold their own opinions but Marza’s were not in line with those of her party or the regional government. Predictably the regional Par-

tido Popular (PP) and Ciudadanos opposition parties are calling for Marza’s head. Neither should the matter be dealt with by the PSOE’s Ximo Puig, President of the Valencia Region, they argued but should go all the way up to the party leadership and Secretary General Pedro Sanchez in Madrid. Ironically, the political storm has passed over the heads of most of the population of the region’s three provinces, particularly in Alicante. “Independence? What do they want that for? I’d need a passport to go to Murcia!” exclaimed 73-year-old Andreu Lloret in an Alfaz del Pi bar as he and others discussed Marza’s views before turning to Barcelona’s recent 0-4 defeat by Atletico de Bilbao.

Looking for just one more child

MUST be a minimum of five pupils By Linda Hall IT’S been said that more people visit Guadalest than the El Prado art museum in Madrid. There might be a relentless influx of tourists to the picturesque inland village but there are only 226 registered residents according to Spain’s National Statistics Office (INE). And Guadalest needs more

children: one child to be precise. If the state-run village school is to remain open it needs five pupils and so far only four have been registered for the next school year. Unless another child can be found, the other four will have a long drive each day either to Callosa d’en Sarria, Benimantell or even as far as La Nucia. “Five is the minimum allowed by the Valencian Com-

munity,” said Guadalest mayor Enrique Ponsoda. Six children were enrolled last year but four finished their primary education and will now go to secondary schools in neighbouring towns. Two remain and another two have been registered. The town hall has offered municipal tax breaks to encourage parents to enrol their children at the school.

Beaches easier to reach LAND will be compulsorily purchased in Villajoyosa to provide access to the Varadero, Estudiantes and Tio Roig beaches. The notification appeared in the regional bulletin, Diari Oficial, and the town hall has embarked on the formalities to expro-

priate 577 square metres of land. The owner now has a month to appeal against the purchase. The town hall will then use this to widen the road that goes down to the beach and create a parking area.

Emergency ambulance cover for Elche is ‘inadequate’ CITY loses an ambulance to the coast every summer

By Gemma Quinn EMERGENCIES this year have highlighted the growing need for Elche City to have two SAMU ambulances all year round. Elche has lost one ambulance since July, which moved to Santa Pola to deal with the increase in the tourist population, but has

still spent half of its time in the city dealing with incidents as the other ambulance was occupied. Specifically, the ambulance, known as ‘Dama 2’ based in the coastal resort during the summer season, carried out 110 primary care services in July. Of these 46 per cent of

the services were in Elche, forcing the SAMU to travel the 15 kilometres between the two municipalities to provide assistance. These two vehicles must also serve and provide emergency care to Aspe, Hondon de las Nieves and Hondon de los Frailes, up to 30 kilometres away.

Rice blast fungus under control WATER shortage and high temperatures allowed fungus to grow By Linda Hall PEGO rice-growers are a little happier about their next harvest. A fungus commonly known as rice blast (pyricularia oryzae) has been practically eradicated now that the growing rice has been sprayed from the air. The product employed was an insecticide whose use is permitted by the regional government and the European Union. Scant rain combined with the consistently high temperatures of recent weeks produced ideal conditions for the fungus to proliferate. Lack of water forced growers to recycle the water used in the rice fields, explained Miguel Puchalt, who was in charge of fumigation. “That and the heat allowed the fungus to reproduce,” he said. He was satisfied with the results, Puchalt added: “We had to intervene because the fungus kills the plants and affects production.”

Forty-seven per cent of the 20.6 million Spaniards with an internet connection spend an average of two hours a day on these sites, found a study by the International University of Valencia (VIU). The average outside Spain was 29 per cent, the researchers said.

They also recognised Spain as the best-connected country - in the internet sense, that is, in Europe spending an average of 4.4 hours a day on the net. They used mobile phones for 2.7 hours of this period. What the survey has also established, researchers announced, is that Spain’s int e r n e t h a b i t v e rg e s o n addictive behaviour, especially in the under-26 age

Guinness designation controversy GUINNESS Book of Records had intended to include Villena’s Moors and Christians night parade in which 14,000 take part in the section for Multitudinous Dances and Sword Dances. But after the fiestas organisers objected to the Guinness officials’ proposal and insisted that it should be entered as a parade, negotiations have faltered. Guinness considers that this description applies exclusively to military parades and processions, explained Antonio Navajas. “They want to give Villena the record for the most-participated sword dance, something we strongly object to,” Navajas said. “We are currently holding talks to find a solution.”

Popular editor dies WELL respected journalist Roy Wickman sadly died in hospital in Valencia on August 16. He is survived by his wife and three children. The funertook place at Denia Crematorium. For many years he was the editor of Costa Brava News and more recently a regular contributor not only to that publication but he also supplied stories to the British press. Mr Wickman lived in Ondara and had been married for around 30 years. He will be sorely missed by his readers and friends.

By Linda Hall JULIA MINANA, a graduate from the Sports Sailing Section of Club Nautico Javea, won the Optimist class European Championships held in Pwllheli, Wales, last month. Julia beat 50 of her peers from an international field to win her class. Fifty friends, relations and well-wishers gathered in Javea to congratulate her on a wonderful achievement.

Jose Maria Bataller, Club Nautico’s sporting director, presented Julia with a plaque, applauded her success and noted the effort put in by her teammates. Bataller said: “Julia has sacrificed normal life to train for this. She has overcome adversity and shown that if you are focused you can achieve what seems impossible. I would also like to thank her team-mates who supported her and, of course, her parents who have been by her side all the

way. We are very proud of her and wish her well in the future.” Julia is not the first sailor from Club Nautico to win the Optimist class; Eilsa Borrego won the award in 2006. Javier Poole from Club Nautico closed the proceedings with a passionate speech that acknowledged the sacrifices that sportsmen and women made in their pursuit for success and said: “Sport helps us to be better people.”

Humour is the best medicine THE name Charles Dodgson might not be familiar to everyone, but his pen name, Lewis Carroll is instantly recognisable. The Javea Players are presenting a whimsical and intimate show called ‘Crocodiles in Cream’ which is a one man show that explores the depth and breadth of Charles’ talents. Kevin Moore takes the role of Dodgson in his Lewis Carroll alter ego in the one man show. Charles was a polymath and excelled in

mathematics, photography and the written and spoken word, whether it was nonsense rhymes, charades, puzzles, jokes or elaborate songs. It was on the request of Alice Liddell, one of the children he photographed, he transcribed some of his stories and named them ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.’ The show is at the Javea Players’ Studio and runs from Monday September 7 until Friday September 11. Three cultural art exhibitions JAVEA is showcasing some of the works of Galacian artist Manuel Jorge. The exhibitions are on display at three venues, the Solar Blasco Museum, Casa de Tena, both in the historic centre and Casa de Cable which is in the port, where there will be over 200 works which feature his craft in textiles, paintings and drawings. Born in Galacia in 1929,

Manuel Jorge studied architecture and rose to the position of Doctor of Architecture. In 1960 whilst living in Menorca he started to paint and in 1961 he met Christina Snellman, the acclaimed Finnish artist, who he later married. They moved to Javea in 1963 where he embarked on his first architectural projects. The couple relocated to Paris in 1975 and lived in the

Cite Internationale des Arts which was set up by Christina’s father, Eero Snellman, in the 1950’s. They both travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Jose Chulvi, mayor of Javea, opened the exhibition and there was a musical interlude from Pere Tent and Carme Catala. The exhibitions run until Saturday October 3.

A Walk Aide will be purchased with part of the donation and will be presented to La Pedrera hospital where it will be installed in the Physiotherapy Department. The aide is designed to assist those who have suffered nerve damage through brain tumours. It is placed around a leg and sends signals to the patient who then raises and lifts a leg and from this will coach them to enable them to walk. The afternoon started at 15.00 hours and 15 tickets costing €15 were sold to members and friends of Albir Church of England. There were samples of 15 different tapas, a 15-question quiz with three prizes and 15 raffle prizes and €300 was raised for the Chaplaincy funds. Fundraising is constant as there is no income other than generosity of members and friends. Services are held every Sunday at the Norwegian Seamans Church premises on Carrer Mart in Albir. Tapas route gets taste for success MORE than 1,000 restaurants and bars participated By Staff Reporter THE seventh edition of Benissa’s Ruta de Tapas was the busiest yet. The event was a collaboration between 11 tourist establishments in the municipality. There were more than 22 different varieties of tapas available as well as salads and sweets and local wines and beers. Over 1,000 restaurants and bars participated

in the event and during the celebration of local tapas more than 1,800 portions were served. There was an increase of 16 per cent on 2014, and over 90 per cent of the participants were of a foreign nationality. There was a family feel to the event and Benissa said it welcomed the initiative and hoped it would encourage the people who attended to return and experience the environment, heritage and cuisine of Benissa.

Beach rugby 7s THE annual beach 7s rugby tournament at El Raset in Denia was a showcase of fast and physical action. Teams came from Gandia, Valencia, Alicante, Albacete and Denia. Kick off was at 10am and the teams did not waste any time in trying to outwit and outplay their opponents. The event was assisted by the presence of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross), who attended to two dislocated shoulders, twisted ankles and a myriad of other injuries. The audience watched the fast moving pace of ‘touch rugby’ and a similar junior event also proved very popular. The overall winners were Liceo Frances, and plans are already in place for next year’s tournament.

finish the Agora, a covered plaza for concerts and sports events. The final uncompleted section of the complex designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava has accumulated numerous defects over the last six years and it must close for two months.

Valencian architect Jose Maria Tomas Llavador found problems both inside and out in a survey commissioned by Avanqua, the company that won the tender to run the centre which, like the Oceanografic section, has also been contracted out.

She was injured in the bous al carrer bull-running although strictly speaking bulls were not involved, but young cows that do the rounds of local fiestas. The colourful display also provides a pleasant, shaded area which is appreciated by everyone walking across the old town centre in the hot temperatures. Mayor of the town, Oscar Medina, explained in a statement that this initiative launched by the council had been designed as an original, unique and innovative new feature of Torrox, which is also expected to become a tourist attraction. He pointed out that the installation was set up by a local company and will remain in place until the winter. Paola Moreno, Deputy Mayor of Torrox, said the project had coincided with the local fair in the district El Morche, which meant that a large number of tourists had already been able to enjoy this new umbrella extravaganza.

The cost of everything school-related keeps going up, which makes trying to pay everything else in the household a struggle. A recent report from the UK revealed that 60 per cent of parents are struggling financially because of back-to-school expenses, which is causing great stress as a result. School costs nowadays range from books, uniforms, voluntary contributions, registration fees and after-school activities. But they can also incorporate the cost of expensive technology as some schools now require that parents pay for technological advances like iPads or

Likewise, making an inventory of your child’s wardrobe can also prevent overbuying. Parents can often save money too by shopping online, or remembering that items are priced highest at back-to-school time, so if it is possible to wait until the end of September sales, it would be worthwhile. And as always, make a list of everything you need to buy and stick to that list.

Spain expected to break record for car sales this year NEW vehicle deliveries in Spain are predicted to move past the one million vehicles threshold for the first time in five years, thanks to a strong economic rebound and the government’s subsidy programmes. According to ANFAC, the country’s industry association, the 2015 forecast finds passenger car registrations increasing by 23 per cent to 1.05 million vehicles. In 2014, a total of 855,308 cars were delivered in Spain, which was an 18 per cent rise on the previous year. The ANFAC guideline sees all registrations, including industrial and commercial vehicles, jumping 22.7 per cent to 1.21 million units. ANFAC President Jose Luis Lopez-Schuemmer said: “The economic forecast is good, we expect 3 per cent GDP growth this year, and the jobless rate will also fall.”

Arranging a logo is easy enough. If you are light-fingered, in a laptop keyboard sense, there are online logo designs to draw inspiration from. Once you find something that inspires you the next step is to find a graphic designer. These unique craftsmen and women tend to work from home; their fees, unfortunately, are buttons and they deserve bet-

Are You Affected By Changes To UK Bank Compensation Scheme? Do you keep large deposits in bank accounts? If so, you need to understand to what extent you will be protected in event of bank failure. For peace of mind you should establish what investor protection you have with each of your banks, and how it works. The same applies for capital you have held in other financial institutions like investment firms, insurance companies etc in the event of institutional failure. If you have any concerns about the level of protection you should establish if there are other institutions or investment structures which offer a higher level of protection, or if there are steps you can take to feel safer. Within the EU, banks deposits up to €100,000 are protected. So if a bank fails, any deposits you have up to this limit are refunded. In the UK, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme is based on the EU compensation scheme and is available to savers if a UK regulated bank or financial institution fails. At present, the limit per institution (i.e. across all accounts held with the

So Halifax and Bank of Scotland are one institution, for example. If you have more than £75,000 held with a single UK regulated institution, the excess over £75,000 will not be protected. You may wish to consider reducing balances

so that these are spread to provide more protection (the actual balance should be lower than this to give cover to any interest to be added). Those who have less than €100,000 with the same institution regulated elsewhere within the Eurozone are not affected, as the Euro amount has not changed. However if you have bank deposits over €100,000 you should consider ways to protect your savings from the risk of institutional failure. Note that since the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are not in the EU, banks which are regulated there are not covered by the EU scheme or the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme. These jurisdictions have their own compensation schemes, with a limit of £50,000. Besides spreading your deposits, you can move capital into

alternate investment arrangements that provide a higher level of protection. For example Luxembourg offers a state controlled investor protection regime which provides maximum security to investors without limit. You should also ensure that you have adequate diversification across different investment assets, because this decreases risk as well as increasing the potential for improved returns. This same media focused on trivia when damning evidence pointed to Washington and Kiev complicity. To this can be added the peculiar US, Ukraine and Dutch government ‘no comment’ response when asked to release vital evidence that would assist in getting to the cause of the tragedy. Mainstream media intention was clear: The most deceptive lie of all is the half lie with deliberate intention to deceive. It is common knowledge that Ukraine’s BUK missile systems are Russian made. In the same way NATO armaments are mostly American made.

THE number of deaths of members of the public who have taken part in Spain’s bull running festivities has been shockingly high in 2015. During the weekend of August 16-18 alone, four participants were killed in bull running events and a total of 10 individuals have died taking part so far this summer. While bull running and bullfighting activities remain controversial, when so many spectators or participants are killed or injured through these celebrations, there surely has to be some serious attempt to prevent further fatalities. Different regions of Spain have different rules regarding these events, with some even allowing children to accompany their parents in the festivity, and while each municipality has their own regulations governing these events, incidents still occur. As debates about the cruelty of Spanish customs such as bullfighting and bull running continue, the first priority must be to address the issues regarding the safety of those taking part. It may be traditional to celebrate events like these but when so many people are dying for the sake of a festivity, isn’t it time organisers seriously consider the safety procedures of these celebrations and take measures that will stop more people being killed? The current complacent attitude that “these things happen” should be challenged, and formal regulations that ensure public safety should be established across Spain.

A genuine war hero who deserves every benefit going JUST a line to say how proud the family of Ernest Hall, former Far East prisoner of war, who was 100 years old, (as per your Costa del Sol edition front page story 30 July–5 August) should be, and how humble we his fellow countrymen and women should be. A real hero who failed to mention in the article that all those freed from the Japanese POW camps were made to pay for their ‘subsistence whilst in enemy hands’ by the British Government after the war!!! Absolutely shocking, but true! One would hope Mr Hall is receiving his winter fuel allowance, summer cooling benefit, and anything he requires in his old age. Festival rip-off MY granddaughter and her partner recently attended the Dreambeach festival at Villaricos. They had paid for tickets to get in but, to their amazement and disgust, they were charged €18 (eighteen) to leave!! Not only that but they were charged the same amount for just two drinks. As they were just visitors to Spain, and spoke no Spanish, what could they do but pay up? Needless to say, they will not return to a Spanish pop festival and will tell their friends to do likewise. MAY I through your Letters column express a big thank you to the lifeguards/socorristas at the Tropicana Beach, El Faro. Today when we were leaving the beach, my partner tried to climb on to a small ledge leading on to a pathway. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell backwards onto some small rocks. I was behind her and managed to prevent her head falling on to the rocks, which would have made things more serious. However, she landed on her left hip and was unable to get up. This incident took place approximately 20 metres from the lifeguard lookout post and they were on the scene immediately. They took my partner to the lookout post and treated the bruise on her hip. Throughout they were very professional and even offered to escort my partner across the main road to our car as I was laden with beach chairs, parasol, towels, etc. The downside of all this was despite the beach being very busy and a cry from my partner as she fell backwards, only a young Spanish couple came to see if they could assist. Disappointing to think it could have been something more serious yet no one bothered to come and see if they could help. Thank you again the lifeguards/socorristas.

More rubbish AFTER reading a recent letter on your page about the rubbish piling up in the street, I went to the local council to ask about ours. We have been looking at a smelly pile of waste overflowing for four bins and a skip for two weeks. Their answer was: “It gets cleared regularly.” I asked how regularly because it’s been there for two weeks. They said: “Regularly,” and then I was asked to leave. Load of bull WITH regard to Mike Walsh’s article in last week’s edition, I have no doubt that there may be 1,400,000 Ukrainian passport holders wanting to move to Russia; however, there is a very strong possibility that the vast majority of these are actually ethnic Russians. Wherever you go in the former soviet states you will find large numbers of ethnic Russians. To this day they gen-

erally remain loyal to Mother Russia and firmly believe that the country they are living in should remain part of the Russian Federation (Putin’s new Soviet Union) and it’s no surprise that with so many actual non-pro-Russian people in Ukraine many of whom are looking toward Europe, the ethnic Russians would be disenchanted There are 8,334,000 ethnic Russians in Ukraine making up 17.3 per cent of the population. In a snap poll last year, 73 per cent of Ukrainians said they favoured moving closer towards Europe. I believe in freedom of the press and freedom of expression (pity it is not actually the case in Mike Walsh’s beloved Russia as all media is government controlled in one way or another). Using headlights AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS: Since 2011 all new cars have them. A LOT of cars are seen with their lights on during the day but these lights are usually different to ones referred to as ‘headlights.’ Since 2011, all new cars and trucks sold in the EU were required to have Daytime Running Lights (DLR) which turn on automatically with the engine in accordance with a new directive designed to improve road safety. The rule then became mandatory for trucks and buses from August 2012. The DLR is a new method of illumination with low energy consumption, but it is not designed to provide additional lighting for the driver, but rather they work to improve the vehicle’s visibility to other road users. With regard to headlights, there are times when you must turn your lights on during

the day and in certain locations, as marked by road signs, such as when you enter a tunnel. During the winter months when the sun is lower and visibility becomes problematic as a result, the DGT recommend having headlights on during the day. Under normal circumstances there is no mandatory requirement to have your headlights on during the day and that also applies when driving through road works. However, they should be used in certain road conditions, such as when travelling on a reversible lane, which can at times, be used by traffic in either direction. These lanes are more common near to city centres where the flow of traffic can alter to give more space for vehicles in one direction.

THE University of Warwick has recently carried out a survey into the causes of separation anxiety to try to identify any common factors. The survey showed almost 75 per cent of vets reporte d se e i n g u p t o fiv e cases per month with the other 25 p e r c e n t se e i n g mo re than this. That comes to one case every single week for every vet in the country! Separation disorder is rarely t h e r e a so n t h a t a p e t d o g owner will take the dog to the vet, since most owners do not understand the problem. One of the worrying aspects of the survey is that 57 per cent of owners stated they could not keep their pets because of the barking or destruction. Male dogs between one and three years of age from the working or terrier breeds were most prone to these problems. This does not mean that you will never encounter barking or destruction if you have a female collie aged four. The survey has so far shown that in many cases, a change in family life or the home led to the onset of barking and destruction. Forty-three per cent were d u e t o a change in the owner ’s wo r k i n g hours, followed by 23 per cent from house moving, a new member of the family showed a 19 per cent change, and 13 per

Time out from the hutch PET rabbits need lots of attention, especially in Spain with its extremes of temperature, as well as interaction with their owners. But many owners abandon them or pay them little attention, according to the Scottish SPCA. There have been 550 rabbits taken into care since the start of 2015 and as many as 728 rabbits were rescued last year in their areas. While children often stop paying attention to

them as soon as the novelty of having a pet wears off, the rabbits become lonely and isolated and are left to languish in small hutches with only the occasional visit by owners. Mike Flynn, chief superintendent of the SPCA says: “These poor rabbits are literally left suffering in silence, living a miserable and lonely life.” In the UK, rabbits are the country’s third most popular pet but are, sadly, the most neglected, whereas in Spain they ranked seventh, but are typically more cared for. The RSPCA recommends rabbits are kept in pairs and that there should be at least an hour’s daily exercise either in a rabbit proofed room or garden, suggesting a run-exercise area that is permanently attached to the main shelter. Playtime should also be part of the daily routine.

More single women signing up for IVF FERTILITY starts to decline from the age of 31

By Gemma Quinn AN increasing number of single women are turning to IVF to have a baby. The number of women without a partner wanting fertility treatment has more than tripled in less than a decade with ex-

perts putting the rise down to women putting their career first and then choosing to have a child on their own before it’s too late. An increased acceptance of both single-parent families and IVF in general is also thought to have played a part.

In 2006, the number of single women with no partners registered at UK IVF clinics was 292. In 2013 it was 952. Fertility starts to decline in women from the age of 31 and by the age of 35 the decline is ‘significant’ prompting more women to have treatment.

THERE are so many fitness and health gurus, articles and products available in the health and fitness industry that quite often you can become extremely confused and rightly so. The diet industry in the UK alone is worth two billion. So there are a whole lot of companies out there making an absolute fortune from consistently bombarding us with all sorts of fitness and health solutions. There really is NO Quick Fix to getting slim, fit and healthy. Common Mistakes • Restricting your food I have done regular weigh-ins with clients for years; I can confirm that not one of them has ever had a basal metabolic rate under 1,150 kcal. This is the amount of energy in calorie value that their body needs to function if they were do nothing more than sleep on a sofa all day. So my question is, how on earth do you expect your poor body to function on a daily restricted intake of 600-800 calories? So your body goes into panic mode, thinks it is being starved and slows the metabolism right down to preserve fat stores. • Over training Training at the gym for hours to the point of exhaustion, is counter-produc-

tive. Mix your sessions to include resistance training, cardio and High Intensity Training for around 45 minutes to an hour per session three to four times per week, this is plenty. • Alcohol Your biggest saboteur, it is laden with calories and has no nutritious value whatsoever. Your body cannot metabolise alcohol as it views it as poison, so as you are working off the alcohol calories, any food that is sitting in your stomach is busy being stored as fat. My Top 4 Tips: • Plan a long-term lifestyle change instead of following random fad diets. • Incorporate regular effective exercise into your life - minimum three hours per week. • Eat at least three well balanced nutritious meals per day. • Limit alcohol to a weekend treat. By Gemma Quinn ACCORDING to a recent survey, 24.2 per cent of Spaniards say they swim regularly and in the hot summer months there is no better way to stay fit. However, swimming can have a few adverse effects on your health, mainly chlorine. Allergies and asthma The chlorine in swimming pools can cause allergies and asthma, particularly in young children. Whilst the chlorine fights the germs and bacteria in the water, it can dry out skin. To help avoid the problem have a good shower after swimming and apply re-hydration creams at the end of the day. Allergies can be caused by chloramine, the result of the chemical reaction between

MANY herbs can withstand both extreme summer and winter temperatures. Many are used for cooking, infusions, and natural remedies for plants - and humans - as well as for their perfume, flowers and attraction for butterflies and other beneficial insects. No wonder herbs are an essential feature of Spanish gardens.

Herbs can be fitted into gardens of all sizes in various ways: • Planted in pots or larger containers, either in the garden or by the kitchen door. Or of course in a patio courtyard or the terrace of an apartment. • In a dedicated herb garden with a squared, wagon wheel or raised spiral, or medieval tied knot design. • Alongside the vegetable plot or paths. • Mixed in with alpines and succulents in a rockery. • Mixed into the front and mid depth of a mixed perennial/shrub bed.

• Creeping thyme and dichondra in shady areas. • As internal hedges. Rosemary, bay and lavender are especially useful. • Mints are best planted in large, sunken pots or barrels as the roots can spread evasively. • In the vegetable garden borage, cultivated and wild garlic, fennel and artichokes, tagetes menor not only brighten up a plot but are also useful companion plants that help protect vegetables from plagues like carrot fly, black and white fly and swarming beetles. So the moral of my article this week is that you do not need to lose €200,000 or any amount of money, all you need to do is follow my free advice and arrange for a professional surveyor to inspect your home and get the best professional advice on how to maintain and maximise the value of your home. third was won by Michael Morley. Three nearest the pins were played for, and on hole 3 it was won by Steve Head, and on holes 12 and 17, they were both won by the now very in form David Corcoran. Three players achieved two’s on Wednesday, David Corcoran on hole 3, Steve Head hole 8, and on the long 15th was that very very nice chap David Knight.

The Masters is always the first Major event and it is permanently located at Augusta National Park. The outstanding player of the Masters and of the year was Jordan Spieth, who opened the competition with nine birdies

in the first round and remained on top of the leaderboard throughout. In Campbell’s Major Wager our eventual winner placed large amounts on Rory and Jordan. Nobody risked anything on Hideki who was fifth. The US Open was once again the domain of young Jordan. Still only 21 and claiming his second Major. The also-rans from the remaining 155 players included Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace. The Major Wager punters skilfully avoided each of them. Fun, friendship and exercise at Benitachell Bowls Club THE image of bowls has changed over the last few years BENITACHELL BOWLS CLUB is unique. It is the only bowls club on the Costa Blanca wholly owned by the members. It is drawing a younger crowd and the membership of Benitachell Bowls Club pays testament to this. Brian said, “Our membership is varied. We have bowlers in their 40’s right through to their 80’s. Bowling is one of the few sports that you can enjoy whatever your age.” There is a free induction course run by Terry who is one of four qualified instructors so you can get a feel of the game and decide if it is for you. One of the other benefits of bowling is the exercise, both physical and mental, it provides. Games usually last around three hours and during that time there is plenty of walking, up and down the rinks, plenty of stretching and bending, as you deliver the bowls, and plenty of humour and mental calculations to see if you will emerge victorious. The bowling season starts in September and the four day Masters competition has a generous €1,000 prize. Alicante Golf. His victory extends his lead in Levante’s Player of the Year competition and also puts him top of the society’s annual Oliva Nova Challenge - an eclectic competition. Playing off 11, Michael finished ahead of Jeff Morrow, who had 37 points and Anne Edwards was third with 36 points.
